Black Mass What’s it about:

This is the biopic of Boston gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, the brother of a state senator, who became an FBI informant and used this status, as well as that of being the area’s most infamous criminal, to eliminate his competition – a mafia family trying to invade his turf – from the 1970s to early 90s. Director: Scott Cooper cast: Johnny Depp, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard Why it’s worth watching? “It’s not what you do, it’s when and where you do it. And who you do it to or with,” says Whitey Bulger to his six-year-old son in the Black Mass trailer. “If nobody sees it… it didn’t happen.” But we all know that much of what we’ll see in this film did actually happen. Boston’s Whitey Bulger, played by Johnny Depp, was, at one time (hell, probably still to this day), the most feared, most wanted, and most notorious gangster in U.S. history. And the film’s trailer certainly confirms this. Johnny Depp is ruthless and cunning, and his portrayal of Bulger is all about intimidation, domination and brutal violence – it’s simply terrifying and we love it. Critics are already saying that this is the best performance from Johnny Depp that we’ve seen in a very long time, as he captures Bulger’s split personality – charming and loved by his neighbours, and deeply feared and merciless towards his opponents – incredibly well. If it’s straight up, intense, cold-blooded drama that you’re after, Black Mass will deliver this, and then some! We hear award season calling out for this one!

THRILLER

After the Storm: A Kate Burkholder Novel By Linda Castillo

ALTERNATIVE R&B/SOUL

Beauty Behind the Madness By The Weeknd

Now, how do we describe a predominantly R&B artist who is breaking all the musical barriers with his addictive beats and throwback sound? One word: The Weeknd. Though we don’t know much about Abel Tesfaye himself (he does have a social media presence, but much of this man’s personal life is shrouded in mystery), what we do know is that since he dropped the nine-track mixtape, House of Balloons, back in 2009, he has been unstoppable. His sound is radio-ready and there are clear traces of contemporary R&B à la Trey Songz, Jeremih, and Drake (who happens to be a huge supporter and fellow Torontonian of Abel), but there is something about the production and song craft that gives The Weeknd a little more of an edge and appeal to listeners. Beauty Behind the Madness is a gorgeous collection of electrifying melodies, featuring the Michael Jackson-style, disco-funk-sounding Can’t Feel My Face, the booming and hypnotic The Hills, and the psychedelic serenading Often (we had this one on repeat for a long time). Fans who have been with Abel since the start will appreciate how much he’s grown and his fan base is sure to sky rocket. 58

Kate finds herself plunged into a thirty year old case that takes her deep into the Amish community to which she once belonged. Secrets are revealed, her personal life gets complicated, her focus is distracted. Zahraa discovered her talent for drawing at the age of nine whilst working on a school project. After thoroughly searching for, and failing to find, pictures to match her project, Zahraa decided to pick up a pencil and draw the images that she had envisioned, herself. This, was the start of an artistic love affair that has lasted more than two decades now. What I really like about Zahraa’s work is the simple beauty behind each picture; sometimes it’s the vibrant colours she uses, or the subject of the drawing, and even the diversity of skills and techniques, all of which is illustrated through attractive works of art. “I work with pencil, pencil colour, water colour and acrylic so far,” Zahraa says. “I’m very eager to use oil paints in the future.” Zahraa is very comfortable around art. Creating it, talking about it, and wanting to learn more, she has a passion for the field that is evident in her approach to art. “I am a self taught artist, however, YouTube and the internet has been a good guide to improve my skills,” she tells us. “I am also a big fan of tattoo art so I, very much, get inspired by the work of international tattoo artists.” Tattoo artists? I’d never have guessed it! But Zahraa’s talent has allowed her to see the beauty in everything around her and translate this on to a paper or canvas. You’ll see from her instagram account (@zaminiart) that there are a number of great pieces that any creative connoisseur would be happy to display on their wall. So, does she have a favourite?

“I am also a big fan of tattoo art so I, very much, get inspired by the work of international tattoo artists.” “I don’t have a favourite piece of art,” Zahraa admits. “I spend my time and energy differently on each of them, so, in their own unique way, all of them are my favourite. However, I try to focus on pencil drawings more, as I’ve noticed that it is an artistic practice that has been neglected, and it also gives me the opportunity to challenge myself and create a piece of art using minimal tools,” she adds. ➻

“I spend my time and energy differently on each of them, so, in their own unique way, all of them are my favourite.”

To Zahraa’s credit, she is probably the only creative person I’ve spoken to who doesn’t have a sole artist role model, but, instead, appreciates the practice and industry as a whole. “I don’t focus on a particular artist or style,” Zahraa says. “I observe as much artwork, as I can, from different artists; local or international, classic or abstract, professional or beginner, each of them has their own unique style which is interesting and inspiring.” I’ve always been curious to know how and when an artist knows that a piece is finished. For Zahraa, many factors apply. “It depends on a lot of things; the size of the piece, the details, the time, and, specifically, my mood,” she says. “I don’t paint unless I’m sure that I’m in the mood for painting. And, by that, I don’t mean happy or sad, but a mood that allows me to paint peacefully and joyfully. When I draw or paint I don’t care about the time,” Zahraa continues. “I might spend eight hours straight on one piece and sometimes I stop in the middle of the artwork for months, before continuing again.” One thing Zahraa is certain about, and something that really shows her humble nature as an artist, is that she has no pretentious goals when it comes to the way she wants people to perceive her work. “Some artists have a message in their art that they want to deliver, and mine is simple,” she says. “My goal is to deliver beauty. When someone sees my artwork, I don’t expect them to analyse or figure out any feelings or puzzles in it, I just want them to pause, look at it, enjoy the beauty, and forget about life pressures for that one moment.” On a more personal note, Zahraa is hoping to improve her fitness talent of becoming a yoga instructor in Bahrain, after being certified from an Indian yoga institution. “You might not get the returns and the appreciation that you deserve, and it can get frustrating, but this is totally fine,” Zahraa says. “Keep practicing and improving your talent because as the saying goes, ‘your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God’ so make sure that you give the best and the most beautiful gift back to God. This is what keeps me motivated.” ✤

If you were sent to live on a deserted island with a canvas – what three other artistic tools would you take with you? Oil colours and brushes. I would spend my time experimenting and painting with oil colors.

Driving Dodge Muscle

CITY RIDES

A day out with Dodge’s fleet of muscle cars is always going to be a good experience… So there we were, on a steamy afternoon at the Yas Marina Circuit, with Dodge’s entire range of American muscle lined up waiting, from the V6 Challenger right up to the mighty 700hp Charger Hellcat and SRT Viper V10. Saving the best for last, we were first let loose on the standard passenger range of SXT and R/T models. The car I went for first was the Charger SXT, with the 3.6l Pentastar V6. I recall having a go in the very first of the modern day Charger LX platforms with its 250hp 3.5l V6 way back in 2007, and being distinctly unimpressed. It felt unwieldy, overweight and sluggish, and completely uninspiring. 74

fact magazine

I’m very happy to say that the latest V6 Charger is in an entirely different world. The 3.6l Pentastar puts out 292hp and 350Nm of torque, but the improvement is far greater than the 42hp difference suggests, thanks to how the power is put out through the TorqueFlite eight-speed auto, as well as a vastly improved chassis that makes

the new Charger feel more taught and agile. Despite being a V6, the SXT still feels beefy and enjoyable to drive, making it worthy of the Dodge muscle brand. Inside things are also vastly improved – even this low-spec SXT is well appointed, with keyless entry and start, a stylish interior, and a sporty looking dash layout with a seven-inch reconfigurable digital cluster display. Now it was time to move on to the goodies, namely the R/T Charger and Challenger. Both feature Dodge’s meaty 5.7l HEMI, though in the sportier Challenger coupe the powerplant puts out slightly more horses, namely 375hp to the Charger’s

370, and 555Nm of torque to the Charger’s 536. The difference isn’t noticeable when you put your foot down in both cars, although the shorter and lighter Challenger definitely feels more athletic than the sedan. However, both of them are true muscle cars, with big power, and huge fun. As for the Charger SRT, it definitely looks the part, with a big airscoop on the bonnet to help cool that 485hp 6.4l HEMI V8, and the Dodge ‘crosshair’ grille has been done away with in favour of a more sporty looking mesh grille. And then there are those lovely SRT alloys. The driving experience is similar to the R/T, though you do feel the big increase in power from the 392 HEMI, and there’s a much meatier note to the engine. ➻ fact magazine

75

CITY RIDES

The interior is also more snazzy, with very nice leather and Alcantara combination sports seats, and more features like Launch Control and the various SRT driving modes in the dash.As the day wore on time quickly began to run out, and as a result we were all given an agonizing choice - we had to choose between a drive in the Charger Hellcat, or a drive in the SRT Viper. In the end, the V10 supercar won out! Track time in the Viper was unfortunately limited to a few laps, and therefore recollection is scant. I recall a very stylish but snug leather cockpit, and that monstrous V10 rumbling and roaring as I wrestled it around the corners, though I also recall finding it a lot less scary than anticipated, with the 640hp and 813Nm of torque being contained and laid down on the track very well by a superb chassis and the Dynamic Traction control. It was a far cry from its ancestor, the original Dodge Viper, or widowmaker as it was 76

Record Breaking P e r f o r ma n c e f o r I n f i n i t i Infiniti in the Middle East has continued to build on its Q1 success, registering an impressive first half performance for 2015. As one of the fastest growing premium automotive brands in the region, Infiniti delivered 4,200 vehicles to customers at a growth rate of 24.6% - which is four times the pace of the premium automotive market. “Our numbers are testament to the premium motoring experience that our vehicles continue to deliver to customers across the Middle East,” said Juergen Schmitz, Managing Director, Infiniti Middle East. Numbers for the month of June were of particular note as Infiniti delivered 825 vehicles to customers at a comparative growth rate to the previous year of 63% - making it the best June in the history of Infiniti in the Middle East.

J a g u a r F - Pa c e T e s t e d in Dubai Jaguar’s all-new performance crossover – the first SUV in the marque’s history – recently completed extensive testing in some of the most inhospitable environments on earth, which included a stint in the searing summer heat of the Dubai desert. In Dubai, ambient temperatures can exceed 50°C in the shade. When vehicles are left out in direct sunlight, cabin temperatures can soar to 70°C – exactly what’s needed to ensure that everything from climate control systems to infotainment touchscreens function perfectly in extremes of heat and humidity. This part of the test cycle is also designed to place the cooling systems under very high load through a combination of high ambient temperatures and low airflow. To the other extreme, the F-Pace was also tested in Arjaplog, Northern Sweden, where winter temperatures can drop to -40°C! fact magazine

The GoPro HERO4 Session The latest version of the quintessential action capture camera is the smallest and lightest ever offered by GoPro to date.

Offering many of the same features as the bestselling HERO4 Black and Silver cameras, the Session is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than its predecessors, making it even more portable and convenient to use when taking part in your sports activity of choice. The HERO4 Session captures GoPro-quality 1080p60, 720p100 and 1440p30 video along with eight megapixel photos in Single, Burst and Time Lapse modes, in addition to SuperView, Protune and Auto Low Light recording modes. The difference with the HERO4 Session is the very minimal one-button design that both simplifies operation and reduces size. A short press of the shutter button quickly powers the camera on and video recording begins automatically. A long press of the shutter button powers the camera on and triggers Time Lapse photo capture. Then, when you’re done with your session, press the shutter button again to save video or photo content and power the camera off. An expanded set of controls and 80

settings can be accessed when using the GoPro App or Smart Remote. The HERO4 Session is built to GoPro’s famous rugged standards and is waterproof to 33ft (10m) without the need for a separate waterproof housing. It features a sleek frame mounting system that is compatible with GoPro’s expansive array of mounts. What’s more, an innovative dual microphone system dynamically switches sound recording between microphones to reduce wind noise during activities, and audio performance during water-based activities has been dramatically improved thanks to a waterproof design that eliminates the need for a separate water housing, which can often muffle sounds. ✤ VERDICT: Smaller, tougher, and simpler to use. Just superb!

Beats 1 Radio The new worldwide radio streaming app from Apple Music has now been launched. Part of the Apple Music service, you’ll have to have an account to play it, which will cost you $4.99 a month (single membership). The disadvantage right now is that the Beats 1 app is only available to iOS, OSX and Windows users, and won’t be available on Android until later in the year. The good news is that they’ve brought in some heavy talent to run the show, namely Zane Lowe of former BBC Radio 1 fame, Julie Adenuga and urban DJ Ebro. The bad news is that the station is already getting complaints of being repetitive, and overly heavy on urban music above all else. We’re going to keep an eye on this one, but we’re not excited yet.

CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD

Periscope The new video streaming app from Twitter is rapidly gaining in popularity since it was launched in a direct challenge to Meerkat in March of this year. It’s extremely simple to use. You just hit the camera icon, and you start streaming. People can follow you, and see if you’re live. You can see which of your followed accounts is live and tune in, and you can share what you’re watching on Twitter as well. And it now saves the video online for you as well, although in very basic form at the moment. For example, you can’t skip forward or backward in the video, you just have to watch it through. Overall though, a really cool app!

Music Maker Jam Available for Windows, iOS and Android, it does exactly what it says on the tin – you can make your own music with this very easy to use app that has quite a lot of creative power. It is free to download, and with it comes three musical ‘styles’, which are kind of like templates for genres of music. If you want additional styles, you’ll have to pay for them as DLC, which is where these guys will be making their money! You can mix and arrange loops, and there are thousands of samples to choose from. The latest edition also records sound, so you can do your own vocals and add them. Professional musicians and producers might not be impressed, but dedicated amateurs will love it.

Boho Beauty

Code Red

Geek Chic

We love a good 70s comeback and you’ll be pleased to know that the bohemian vibe is very much alive for the AW15 fashion season. There’s a folksy touch with patchwork, print and texture overload on scarves, shawls, ponchos, and all sorts of amazing knits. Whether you’re into comfy and casual or hipster quirky, the boho look can be achieved with everything from a flowing prairie dress, to cool corduroy dungarees, and chic suede outerwear or shoes.

Call it crimson, cherry, ruby, rosy or scarlet, there’s no doubt that the one-colour trend this season is dominated by bold and bright shades of red. At FW15 fashion weeks we saw head-to-toe ensembles in the form of trouser suits, skirt and top pieces, long dresses and even killer-hot red boots. Red is perfect for cutting a confident figure for the Autumn season, and we love that you can spice up the look with black accessories, chunky jewellery and trendy hairstyles.

From glamorous bookworms to ladies who lunch, this is a look that will let every woman express her style. There’s a little of Margot Tenenbaum, a little of the varsity girl, the afternoon tea type and the office crush – with this trend, the kookier you get, the better. Tweed skirt suits, pleated cinched waist dresses, timeless coats, demure polo necks, and elegant handbags, as well as detailed elbow patches and outfits rocking team colours, all classify you for the geek chic trend.

Victorian noir saw a mournful moody calling for a number of fashion collection themes for AW15. The use of frills, lace, ruffle necklines, and deep berry lips helped numerous designers to showcase stunning, costume-worthy silhouettes. It’s all about vamped-up glamorous drama when it comes to nailing this trend. Sheer fabrics and intricate embellishments are perfect for getting that dark and decadent 19th century vibe. Add a beehive-style up do, or slicked-back hair to bring out your inner goth goddess.

This is by far a fashion favourite when it comes to seasonal style. Now, the checked trend has been given an AW15 update. At fashion week we saw fluffy knits with distorted and stretched checked ponchos, the idea here was BIG checks in contrasting colours. Then there’s the quilted 3D forms which do their best to jump off the clothes and add dimension to your everyday look. Find yourself a sweet and sour colour combo with chunky sweaters, pretty skirts and cool coats.

Hands down, one of the most vivid trends of the AW15 fashion season; this trend is splashed with graphic-art inspired swirls, shapes, monochromatic checkerboard patterns, and optical illusions that will have you in a style daze. If you really want to rock out these bold prints, go top-to-toe with an ankle-length dress, a midi coat or a skirt-suit piece. Zig-zags, cubes, geometry and even retro colour blocking, will bring your Op-Pop style to life. fact magazine

Blackout

Head to Toe

Stripe Story

A colour that never really leaves the runway, and needs no introduction, black is making big fashion waves for the season ahead. The lack of colour in many designer collections for AW15 will bring delight to many fashion folk who love their wardrobe to be more on the dark side. Serious, moody, businesslike, with a whole host of fabrics, like wool, leather, mohair, shearling and more, taking a dark direction has never been so fun. There were monochromatic clothes, like black tie blazers and oversized coats being paired with crisp white shirt.

The statement here is that if you’re going to go with a print – go all the way! From funky florals to Aztec patterns and even pop culture-influenced pieces, the full look isn’t one to shy away from this AW15 season. This style works best as a suit, with sharp tailored lines adding to the drama of a topto-bottom print. In some cases, accessories emblazoned with the same print also add a little zest to the look. With this one it’s go big or go home!

A perennial style that held its own on the AW15 fashion runways – the stripe was blown up, coloured in different hues, made to stand out in metallic, or on cosy knitwear, making any clothing items streaked with this style a bonafide fashion staple for the upcoming season. Coats, jackets, sweaters, chunky jumpers, pinstripe suits, however you want to get your stripe on, there are plenty of ways you can do it.

Static Sound

Animal Instinct

Colour Pop

Think broken television and white noise – this was one texture trend on the AW15 runways that men everywhere should be rocking out in. Style wise, go for grey pieces or bright colours and layers. Cool jackets, casual suits and all sorts of knitwear will have this grainy texture on point for an eye-jarring yet playful everyday look. Personally, we love the static pattern in bold clasing colours, worn as outerwear.

Leopard, zebra, cheetah, whatever your print of preference, bring out the beast in your wardrobe with your choice of AW15 fashion. Statement overcoats are a strong look, along with a nappy boulce, a fuzzy mohair, or oversized blazer – anything splashed with animal print will add a taste of street to a tailored silhouette, leaving you looking fashion forward in fall.

Bright shades are not completely off limits, but it’s all about how you incorporate them that matters. Put on a red ombre jacket with a black ensemble, or go 1950s western with dashes of yellow and orange. Accessories are one way to play up the colour pop style, but, also, embellishments, neutral and warm shades, and understated patterns can help to break up the different hues to make sure your look isn’t too overpowering.

There’s no denying that when it comes to Italian cuisine, Cucina Italiana, located alongside Benningan’s in Juffair, has gained a loyal following of diners who just can’t resist the homely atmosphere and traditional Italian offerings. The venue and the team have an unshakable passion for the Italian lifestyle from the cuisine to the décor; this is casual dining with high quality food, prepared with only the freshest and finest hand-picked ingredients, maintaining traditional Italian cooking techniques. Chef De Partie, Julie Liles Villaruel tells us: “The menu at Cucina Italiana is classical and rustic. Dishes are made from premium quality ingredients that are imported from Italy.

“Our signature dishes are fresh homemade pasta and thin-crust, wood-fired oven pizza,” she adds. To our delight, we were to sample both, and more, during this chef ’s table visit. First out to the table are two very different starters. We begin with Arancini – golden fried rice balls filled with melted mozzarella and with a light spicy tomato dip. For us, it was the cheese that had the team going back for more – simply delicious. The dip was perfect for balancing out the dominant tastes of the cheese and risotto rice. Next came the Melanzane Alla Parmigiana. Now, we’ve tried this dish abroad at many fine Italian restaurants, and it’s definitely one

Italian cuisine staple that is difficult to perfect, but Chef Julie does a good job. We like that ingeedients – aubergines, melted mozzarella and cherry tomatoes – are actually cooked and served atop a delectable and lightly baked aubergine that has been cut in half. This is definitely the most innovative take on the dish that we’ve seen in Bahrain. We’ll admit, though it could have done with a little more seasoning of salt, overall, it was a tasty and filling menu option. At Cucina Italiana, all dishes are made from fresh vegetables, succulent meat, handtossed dough and good-quality tomato sauces. Chef Julie is a pro at working with the ingredients and knowing which flavours

go together, so we’re pleasantly surprised, and impressed, that she’s not had formal culinary training, but instead has learned everything she knows about cooking from working in various kitchen, alongside different chefs. It was Cucina Italiana’s very own Sous Chef who recognised and helped nurture Chef Julie’s culinary skills, which led to a well-deserved promotion for her, to Chef De Partie. For Chef Julie it’s the fact that at Cucina Italiana they make their own pasta from scratch, and that the restaurant has a spectacular wood-fired oven, which makes it stand out from its competitors. As we tuck into the two glorious mains in front of us, we couldn’t agree more. There’s the Fettuccine Al Nero Di Sepia – a new addition to the menu – which is Fettuccine black pasta sautéed with tomato concase, prawns, calamari, mussels and clams, simmered with seafood sauce. If you love seafood, this dish will be right up your foodie street. The main attraction for us, however, was the

Pizza Bandera – with milk cow bocconcini mozzarella, rocket leaves, tomato sauce, cherry tomatoes and parmesan shavings – wow! The pizza is large enough to feed at least a group of three to satisfaction and it has the wonderful smoky flavour that can only come from the depths of a wood-fired oven. We polished it off in minutes! So, what’s more important for Chef Julie, presentation or taste? “For me, both,” she says. “Presentation because people eat, first, through their eyes and that is why a dish should look appetising. Also, a dish that looks good but

Menu Arancini Melanzane Alla Parmigiana Fettuccine Al Nero Di Sepia Pizza Bandera Tiramisu Pannacotta

doesn’t taste as good will be unacceptable for the guest – so both are equally important,” Chef Julie adds. We now move onto the sweet treats. To top off the meal we indulged in the most Italian of Italian desserts – Tiramisu. It was as delicious as can be. The layers of mascarpone were a delight for the taste buds, especially mixed in a spoonful with yummy savoiardi biscuits soaked in espresso. Then there was a traditional vanilla Pannacotta with berry compote – a must if you’re craving a more fruitier and refreshing end to a great meal. Chef Julie hopes that within a year Cucina Italiana could well have a brand new branch in Bahrain. With an excellent atmosphere, good service and mouthwatering Italian cuisine, we don’t see why not! as The Meat Co. still got it? By ‘it’ we mean the excellent service and the incredible food that it’s renowned for. It had been a while since we dined out at The Meat Co. but we’ve never stopped hearing all the rave reviews and positive comments from friends and colleagues, about their great experiences. Even the FACT team in Abu Dhabi has given The Meat Co. a huge thumbs up after dining at one of the UAE outlets. The Bahrain venue is located in the bustling Block 338 area; a place that is already packed with many great restaurants. To our pleasant surprise, The Meat Co. had a steady crowd of diners when we visited on a Monday evening. Downstairs, the venue is dim-lit with large tables and comfy chairs, booths for those who may want a more intimate dining experience, an openkitchen-style set up (so you can see all that juicy meat being cooked!) and, of course, an impressive wine wall. Upstairs there’s a trendy bar area and more seating options – ideal for those who want to start off with a casual drink before taking their seats for a leisurely meal. On our previous visits we’ve always skipped starters and gone straight to the steak. But, today, two appetisers caught our eye. We went for the Red Chilli Prawns and the Scallops. The hardest part of both was having to share them because each dish was SO good! The succulent prawns had a tasty ginger-lemongrass punch and the scallops sat on a bed of mouthwatering truffle risotto with asparagus and mushroom. They were also the thickest scallops we’ve ever had 98

the pleasure of eating, infused with a Cajun kick – wow! If you’re familiar with The Meat Co. you’ll know that for the mains you order your protein, of which there is an extensive selection, and then your choice of starch. Our choices were a perfectly mediumcooked and delectably tender 300g Gold Long-Fed Australian Angus Beef Fillet and an amazingly tasty 700g T-bone (USA), flame-grilled to our desired preference. Those who don’t particularly favour meat, but don’t want to miss out on a fantastic evening out, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of good seafood options. We ordered the grilled salmon which comes with sautéed vegetables - an absolute must if you’re in the mood for something different. For sides it had to be the deliciously smooth and buttery mashed potato, the creamy spinach, the steak cut chips, sautéed mushrooms and side salad. For sauces, we’d highly recommend the Béarnaise to go with

your steak – just exquisite. Dessert was another crowd pleaser at our table, and we soon realised that even though The Meat Co. is famous for its steaks, there’s a lot more on the menu that it does, really well. Try the taste bud-satisfying Malva pudding with caramel sauce, or if you can’t make up your mind, go for the trio of five scrumptious sweet treats to sample a little bit of everything – you won’t be disappointed! The Meat Co. once again, proved that it’s consistently good. Service was friendly, fast and attentive. Price wise, it’s not the cheapest in town, but by no means is it the most expensive. The Meat Co. has quality food, knowledgeable staff, and a contemporary yet cosy venue that will deliver on all fronts, every time. Believe us, it’s worth every last dinar you’ll spend. ✤ GO: Visit The Meat Co. in Block 338. Open Sat to Tue, 12.30pm to 11.30pm; and Wed to Fri from 12.30pm to midnight. …you’re at our home, our table – let us take care of you”, that’s what the Brunch menu at Masso reads. True to it’s saying, Masso welcomes guests with a smile and warmth that instantly makes you feel comfortable. The large spread of breakfast and lunch options isn’t the only draw at this charming spot, the elegant décor and the casual, cosy ambiance also attracts diners to visit again and again. Masso stands out in all aspects when it comes to a unique brunch concept in Bahrain. Whether it’s the omelette filled with organic market vegetable or the fresh catch of the day, the team of talented chefs prepare tasty, fresh and delicious fare, a la carte style. There’s something for every palate. Each dish was brought to the table, served tapas style, giving us room to taste more from the menu. Only the desserts are served in a buffet spread. The idea is that you start with a selection of breakfast foods, like eggs benedict, French toast, sausages and more, followed by a simple yet extensive lunch menu with fresh salads and veggies, and seafood, meat and chicken options. You’ll have the perfect wine and dine experience as Masso’s brunch also offers a full bar service with a wide selection of beverages. The brunch menu at Masso alternates every week. Though a few signature dishes like the pumpkin ravioli (it’s spectacular!) make an appearance every week. Now, this is what we tried… Our Recommendations Let’s start with breakfast. The mouthwatering eggs Benedict with salmon dipped in beetroot sauce and a drizzle of hollandaise sauce is an absolute must. The English muffin was soft, the poached egg was perfectly cooked and the salmon was tasty and fresh (we had to have seconds!). The very fluffy French toast with berry compote and whipped cream is a delight for sweet tooths. The puffy sunny yellow omelette with spinach, cherry tomatoes, mushroom, peppers and cheese is also scrumptious. A few more winners from the breaky menu include the veal sausage, the breakfast potato casserole and the basket of fresh bread and pastries. After a short break we continue with lunch. For vegetarians who want a filling salad, go for the roasted butternut squash with red onion, scallion and buckwheat with mint capers

“Each dish was brought to the table, served tapas style, giving us room to taste more from the menu.” dressing – yum! If you like salmon, don’t miss the thinly sliced beetroot cured salmon with rocket leaves – it’s a burst of fresh, light flavours. We love the tender lamb with frekkah stew and root vegetables – the perfect autumnal dish. The grilled US Black Angus beef patties have a spicy kick; if you love beef, you’ll definitely want to give these a bite. The catch of the day was sherry fish with capers parsley tartar. It was crispy and delicious. Finally, we were blown away by the pumpkin stuffed ravioli drenched in butter sage sauce and truffle oil – just wow – you’ve got to try it to believe it. The softest ravioli we’ve ever tasted, and the truffle taste is exquisite. At the dessert buffet there’s only one thing that catches our eye – the tiramisu! It’s as good as can be, and we also give the mango and vanilla mousse, and the chocolate brownie a whirl too. Polished off with a fresh mint green tea, we sat back and went over all the amazing food that had crossed our lips and we agreed that this was definitely the most unique and exciting brunch we’ve experienced in a long time. ✤

T

halassa Sea & Spa is probably Bahrain’s best-kept secret when it comes to wellbeing, and I was about to discover them all on a voyage of total serenity. This spa is a unique Thalassotherapy institute and luxury spa resort. Massages and treatments from oxygen bubbles to seaweed wraps use Aqua science products, with seawater being the main ingredient. The minute you step into Thalassa Sea & Spa, welcoming smiles and a warm homeaway-from-home atmosphere will greet you. A quick tour of this luxurious spa was always on the cards. My therapist Charlene takes me around starting with the locker room, then to the massive pools with ocean views and finally the treatment rooms. It feels like a different planet all together, with amenities and packages that will leave you wanting to shout from the rooftops about it but at the same time not say a word, because this is a haven, one that you’ll want to experience

I was prepared for the Thalassa Escape Package, feeling ready to be detoxified and revitalised... and keep all for yourself! This spa can surely make you forget about the outside world! I was prepared for the Thalassa Escape Package, feeling ready to by detoxified and revitalised from head to toe. We begin with the Affusion Body Scrub, a 30-minute massage with marine salt crystals under the fine shower of warm seawater. It’s a calming treatment that releases stress, softens the skin and exfoliates; opening the pores for the next round. After this, staying awake feels like a task.

Spa review

After the three thalassotherapy treatments, a relaxing body massage with aroma oil was just the perfect way to end this impressive spa journey.

Next up is the Seawater Hyrdromassage Bath, also for 30 minutes. As I step into the tub and lay down floating in the water, Charlene sprinkles some concentrated seaweed powder into the tub. The seawater jets open, with multiple heated and filtered jets rushing on the entire body, all set at varied temperatures and pressure – though it sounds vigorous, it was absolutely soothing. The jets work from neck down to the soles of

the feet, which releases pressure and muscle tension, and also helps to reduce joint pains. Still, the best part of the treatment was yet to come – the Marine Body Wrap (my personal favourite). I lay on an airbed, wrapped first in a warm cocoon of seaweed, foil and then a hot blanket, for 30 minutes. Of course, I fell asleep. This treatment gives the body a massive makeover, on both the skin, and in relieving pain. My

muscles feel looser straight afterwards (highly recommended for anyone with a bad back). After the three thalassotherapy treatments, a relaxing body massage with aroma oil was just the perfect way to end this impressive spa journey. It’s peaceful, and I’m left in a state of bliss. I was a happy customer, who walked out of Thalassa Sea & Spa feeling the most calm and relaxed than I have in a long time. I would definitely recommend each one of you to try the Thalassa Escape Package, because stress and tension is a part of everyday life and your body deserves this pamper session. PEP TALK

Is it really healthy?

Saying Goodbye to the Summer

Yvonne Cole, Personal Trainer, believes that when you eat clean, train hard and trust the process, your consistency and patience pays off…

Christal Dennis, Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist, is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping into their deepest potential...

Food manufactures don’t have your best interest at heart, there are some foods that are thought of as healthy but are making it harder for you to lose weight and keep the weight off. Food manufactures will put any label on their products to try and make you buy it. Like, for example, ‘organic’, ‘all natural’ or ‘healthy,’ as they know these words, and more, will attract your interest. But, often, this doesn’t mean they will help you with your health and fitness goals. Real healthy foods come with NO labels such as apples, bananas, oranges and vegetables; so if you’re buying products in a packet make sure you read the ingredients and labels carefully. Whenever you see any of these words, run for the hills: sugar, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, ethyl malitol, fruit juice concentrate and anything else that is remotely linked to sugar. Labels can be confusing, so you should know that ingredients are listed in the order of quantity in the product. Let’s take two breakfast cereals I have in my kitchen at the moment; product number one is a high fibre wholegrain cereal which lists the first ingredient as wholegrain wheat, the second as wholegrain rolled oats and the third as raisins. Product number two is a Pumpkin Flax Granola cereal which lists the first ingredient as rolled oats, the second as evaporated cane juice and the third as soy oil. You get the drift. So, you can see from product number two that the manufactures really just want to sell their products. The lesson here: read the food labels very carefully.

To those of you who had the summer off, who travelled and are now returning to Bahrain. Welcome back and I hope you all had a wonderful summer holiday. I can say that I had a wonderful adventurous summer in South Africa. Awe inspiring nature, sumptuous food and friendly loved people. I return to Bahrain with a bitter sweetness. Some sadness for leaving my family behind again, and some happiness to see Bahrain with other family and friends. It is quite possible that many of us have these kinds of mixed feelings when we return to Bahrain. Just allowing yourself to feel whatever you are feeling with the knowing that it will eventually pass can help. Getting in touch with friends in Bahrain can help you feel supported as you settle back into life in here. You can allow yourself to say goodbye to the summer, knowing that you can always revisit the fond memories when you want to in the future. Just being fully present in what you can do now so that you are no longer split between still wanting to be on holiday and the responsibilities of life now. Goodbye Summer! I’ll see you next year. If you’re wondering what the word on the street is, the country’s own Blonde in Bahrain, Georgina Jennsen, has her finger on the pulse. This month she’s discussing art in public spaces… My goodness, I was so glad to get back to Bahrain after a recent trip abroad. Or to be more specific, my tummy was. Granted, I chose to stay in an historic area overrun by tourists. Still, no excuse in my book for poorly prepared restaurant food that resulted in an unfortunate case of food poisoning. And the lack of fresh fruit and veges? Don’t even get me started! But you know, in order to appreciate all of the wonderful food we have on this tiny island, sometimes you really need to spend some time in a place where it ’s just not available. So what did I miss the most? Crispy fresh summer salads packed full of flavour, like those served at the oh-so-pretty, Cafe Lilou. The kind that make you feel virtuous, but still satisfied. I also craved a good quality steak. I could have killed for some Meat Co meat - cooked to perfection and paired with a fullbodied red. And although I don’t normally do dessert, I found myself distracted by thoughts of fresh fruit salad. Maybe some melon, definitely a few finely sliced dates, drizzled with honey...mmmmmm... Bon appetit Bahrain!

Tell us your three favorite dining spots in Bahrain... In the morning, I love going to Saffron for a local traditional Bahraini breakfast. The venue is cosy, minimalist, and offers a comprehensive spread of food and great value. For lunch, when the weather allows, I am very keen on dining outdoors. I believe Monsoon creates a unique atmosphere where both its decor and food will take you back to Siam. While choosing a dinner venue, I look for the right ambience, with a comfort food concept. Needless to say, I truly enjoy Primavera, because it combines the warm service of a truly Italian team, and the Solimene plates (on which each dish is served) transport 114 fact magazine

me to Italy. The cuisine is truly authentic, and you feel as comfortable as if you would when visiting a friend’s house. Plus, their homemade pasta is to die for.

Recommend some hidden gems to visit in Bahrain and why... As an art lover, I truly enjoy the National Theatre of Bahrain. The building is modern and offers the best acoustics. Whenever there is a classical show there, I would queue for hours to get a ticket! In Muharraq there is a paved area where you can only walk through, for the streets are very narrow. There you will find old houses, cafes, galleries and a lot of art

on the walls and streets. In the evenings, I like to park my car next to Adliya and just walk along the streets to find the perfect dinner venue.

What do you hope to achieve at the hotel over the next year? While very eager to keep our offerings real, the team is working on creating great experiences in each outlet, where food is authentic, service is friendly and warm, and the ambience transports you to another world. Hence, we are working restlessly to ensure every guest that comes to The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain feels at home, and rediscovers that each restaurant has a very distinctive and authentic concept.
