Summer Daze

The summer night is like a perfection of thought.” - Wallace Stevens

M

aking a summer playlist is one of life’s simple highlights for me. Picking out the songs that are essentially going to be the anthems that you make new memories to whilst having fun in the sun, this is the most exciting part of getting ready for summer travel, visits home, lazy pool days with friends and leisurely gatherings. But, in Dubai, summer can also mean other things - like trying to survive the scorching heat, running from one A/C spot to another and, most of all, choosing to do things that will stop you from melting in the sun. Not to mention the burning hot steering wheel and sauna-like car conditions. Fear not. As usual, the FACT team is on-hand to bring you the only Summer Survival guide you need for 2018. We’ve packed it with the city’s top brunches, lunches, dinners, spa offers and more so you know exactly where to go to beat the heat with your loved ones. Turn to p25 and start jotting down all your favourite spots to check out over the next few months. Highly recommended is one of the many fabulous staycays as well as the indoor activities like chilling (literally) at the Ice Lounge or getting some fitness in at Adventure HQ - there’s plenty to while away the sluggish summer days. Talking of staycations, if you’re not jetting away for a quick summer escape, then you might want to check out our recommendations for home-away-from-home hotels that will make you feel like you went on a mini holiday. This month we shine the spotlight on the boutique wonder of Manzil Downtown (p39) and the British hospitality at Dukes Dubai (p45) - where will you choose? If you pick up FACT’s monthly issue for a fashion, beauty and interior’s fix, you’ll be happy to see that the summer survival edition has more for your wardrobe and makeup/grooming kits. To top this off, our tech pages have something for everyone to envy and we took the motoring beast, the brand new Jaguar E-PACE out for a spin in City Rides (p61). I think this summer I’m going old-school. It’s time for a throwback playlist of all the 90’s and early 00’s - and there’s too many good tunes waiting to be turned up! Wishing you all a bright and beautiful season ahead (and happy survival). Until next month, keep calm and get your summer on. ☺

A TRANQUIL SANCTUARY For those of you looking to escape the city chaos, there’s a new property on The Palm that bridges traditional and modern, organic and manmade, and relaxation and revelry, just perfectly. Enter W Dubai, The Palm… POSITIONED ATOP A CRESCENT-SHAPED oasis in the sparkling Persian Gulf, the highly anticipated W Dubai – The Palm, a serene seaside retreat sits at the doorstep of an international business hub—serving as a utopian intersection of contrasting views and intriguing opposites. From the paradisiacal, palm-lined beaches, guests take in an otherworldly view of geometric skyscrapers bordered by a sinuous coastline and arid desert. Traditional is juxtaposed with modern, organic meets manmade and order challenges chaos. By day, W Dubai— The Palm stands apart, a tranquil sanctuary from the frenzied streets. By night, it bridges the opposing worlds, a place in between the city and the sea, drawing business people, revelers and in-the-know locals who come to leave the day’s dealings behind, mixing and mingling in a vibrant escape. W Dubai – The Palm’s design tells a story through subtle details, striking accents and meaningful, interconnecting details that narrate a conceptual story, offering thoughtful insights across physical, historical and social. From arrival to departure, all touch points display W’s modern interpretations on local influences. The iconic W Monument, synonymous with your arrival to the hotel, depicts the pattern of a dried-up riverbed in the desert. From here, the Escape’s porte cochere appears as a falage (a cavernous river bed), with a lighting feature depicting palm fronds. Upon entering, a bold five-storey citadel arises, reminiscent of fortresses that were used to protect the area and feature windows where guests can get a sneak peek into Welcome area from the guest hallways. The W Lounge, the place to mix and mingle boasts a Fire Pit – a nod to the Bedouin tribes that would travel through the desert and use the bonfire as a gathering place to share stories. 10

fact magazine

All 350 rooms and suites within W Dubai – The Palm have views of the Arabian Gulf or the Dubai skyline, each housing the signature W Bed and MixBar. Each room features sinuous glass-tiled walls, with unique variations reflective of the colours of light glistening on water at different times of the day. Against the opposing wall, modern urban graffiti tattooed in every room, depicting lyrics from an iconic Arabic song. Internationally recognised names including Massimo Bottura and Akira Back will launch their first Middle Eastern restaurants at W Dubai – The Palm – echoing the natural reflections of the desert, the sea and everything in between. The AWAY Spa welcomes guests to an underwater perspective, highlighting the UAE’s heritage of pearl diving, with iridescent shells reflecting the sunlight coming through the ocean – and the Beauty Bar within is reflective of a drop of water dropping off an oyster shell, where guests can nourish themselves both inside and out. ✤

SUMMER SURVIVAL •

DON’T SWEAT IT HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN BE DOING TO KEEP COOL IN THE SCORCHING SUN...

WHAT TO EAT IN THE HEAT?

POPSICLE PARTY Though you might be tempted, stop yourself from reaching for that super-cold tub of ice cream in the freezer. A healthy and more delicious alternative is fruit popsicles – they’re just as cooling and contain half the calories.

TWO EASY & YUMMY POPSICLE RECIPES

Virgin Piña Colada Pops (Serves 8) Ingredients: 1/2 large pineapple, chopped (about 4 cups), One 15-ounce can cream of coconut Three tablespoons fresh lime juice, Pinch fine salt Method: Puree the pineapple, cream of coconut, lime juice, and salt in a blender until smooth. - Pour the mixture into 10 3-ounce or eight 4-ounce ice-pop molds, dividing evenly. Insert ice-pop sticks and freeze until firm, at least four hours and up to four days.

Fruit with Yogurt – As fruit has high water content, it will help maintain your body fluid, by making you sweat – this is the body’s method for cooling down in the heat. Yogurts contain friendly bacteria which can help protect against food poisoning – something that is more of a frequent occurrence in hot temperatures. Rice, Baked Potato & Pasta Salad – Eat regular, small, starch carbohydrate snacks or enjoy a weekend roast with ample potatoes or a pasta dinner, and how about a yummy risotto? Why? Well, carb-rich foods keep the body’s blood sugar and energy levels even, helping to combat heat exhaustion. Onions – Really? Especially red ones! Red onions contain a chemical called quercetin which is believed to have an antihistamine effect. So for those people who suffer from irritants like heat rash or bad reactions to insect bites and stings, eating onions daily could be the answer to these summer complaints. Eat Spicy Food – A vindaloo in the summer might sound crazy, but chillies and spicy curries can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, all of which cools the body down. Eat Small, Eat Often – The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates breaking down the food. Eat small portions but eat regularly!

HOT TIPS FOR COOLING DOWN ◆ Run your wrists under a cold tap for five seconds each every

couple of hours. A main vein passes through this area, and it helps cool the blood. ◆ Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Light colours reflect the sun’s radiation and heat is trapped by synthetic fibres, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation causes you to feel cooler. ◆ Replace your usual body moisturiser with a cooling aloe vera aftersun product to use morning and night. This will help lower your skin temperature. ◆ While you’re out, keep the house blinds or curtains drawn to stop it heating up like a greenhouse. ✤

Banana Nutella Fudgesicles (Serves 10) Ingredients: Six large overripe bananas, peeled 1/2 cup nutella Method: Blend the overripe bananas until completely pureed. - Add nutella, and blend until completely mixed in. - Pour into popsicle molds with sticks and freeze for three to four hours. fact magazine

T

he Downtown area of Dubai with its bustling tourist trails taking in the delights of the Burj Khalifa, the transfixing display of the dancing fountains, sophistication of the Opera District scene and the array of luxury products on offer at Dubai Mall is also home to one of the most unique lodgings in the fast-paced Emirate. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT Manzil Downtown is confident and charismatic. It blends tradition with crisp clean lines and contemporary styling. Upon arrival I had to take a moment to muse whether the beautifully crafted soaring cylinders of glass were a lighting feature or indeed a piece of modern sculpture. I settled on a bit of both! In addition, starburst style chandeliers make the lobby area very memorable and a space in which guests want to linger as opposed to pass through. When selecting your room you will be torn between gazing at the elegant Burj Khalifa or perhaps overlooking the inviting St Tropez-style pool area. Unlike many hotels in and around Downtown, views seemed equally impressive in all directions. When Stella McCartney mused “Everyone can do simple things to make a difference and every little bit really does count” she could have easily been referring to Manzil Downtown. Each tiny element has been carefully styled and thought through to enhance guest experiences. ATTENTION TO DETAIL My key card embellished with a charming selection of Arabic phrases and handy greetings delighted me. Had I been a first time visitor to the UAE then I dare say the effect would have been even greater. So, smiling down at my key card, I headed off to my room passing further Arabic wall etchings as I glided through the hotel. Despite the property firmly saluting Arabic tradition and culture, much of Manzil, particularly the rooms, will remind you of an array of art deco spaces. Flawlessly white walls, grey and black accents and furnishings complementing enviably pristine bed linen really set the rooms apart. The accommodation is both functional and homely, high-spec yet not clinical. Businessmen, couples and families will find themselves equally at home here. I gazed down at the pool area with its curtained, candystriped loungers and felt an overwhelming sense of both relaxation and contentment. ALL ABOUT THE FOOD Dining, refuelling and recharging are tantamount at the hotel. The most exquisite space has to be the sumptuous Courtyard with Shisha Lounge and the best of Mediterranean morsels to tempt you. Reservations are a must as this touch of tranquillity amidst the heart

of a metropolis is much sought after. The expansive tiled area is furnished with inviting wicker chairs which ergonomically hug the contours of the patrons. You may wish to sit within the vast Ottoman-esque arches draped in scarlet velveteen. Whichever it is, ensure you are seen in THE place to be seen at in Downtown Dubai! I both breakfasted and dined in the evening in Boulevard Kitchen. It was once said that ‘All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast’ which must certainly make Boulevard the font of all happiness! The selection of fresh produce and freshly made dishes left me in awe. Warm, crusty, artisanal breads nestled alongside sweet pastries and brioche, whilst traditional dishes such as cheese or zaatar saj were replenished readily. In addition, the ‘egg menu’ allows guests to

create bespoke dishes such as poached eggs with smashed avocado on freshly baked bread. Certainly a mouthful to devour not just to explain these mouth-watering delights. What a way to start your day! By night, Boulevard seems to be transformed by subtle lighting which draws your gaze upwards to the incredible industrial-inspired panelling and huge colourful canvasses. Boulevard is impeccably presented with stylists blending tradition, nostalgia and Arabia with art deco, cosmopolitan, and western nuances. Once again, the brilliance lay in the detail at Boulevard. Quirky grocery store bags brimming with fresh bread were delivered to the table whilst luscious, seared steak sat in a resplendent fashion in the centre of a large black platter surrounded with an exquisite elixir and tiny roasted tomatoes, ready to explode in the mouth. I feared for Boulevard as I ventured down to dinner – how could it possibly surpass breakfast? I need not have worried! HEART OF HOSPITALITY Perhaps the most striking thing is that I felt a strong sense of identity within Manzil Downtown. All too often modernity strips hotels and resorts of any sense of whereabouts or locale and as you look around you could literally be anywhere in the world. Not so at the Manzil Downtown. When visiting Dubai you will enjoy the best of Arabic tradition and hospitality whilst admiring the stylish contemporary décor and cutting-edge service. There will be no doubt where you are and where you will return many times. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder and we’re about ready for another Manzil staycay! ✤

QUEEN OF CROTCHET

EXHIBITION: I Will Build A Tall City Interconnected By Cul-De-Sacs ARTIST: Nargess Hashemi VENUE: Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde DATE: Until July 26

n a futuristic geometrical urban space filled with soft colourful crochet interiors, Nargess Hashemi feels her way through our living spaces for her third solo show at the gallery. Two collections of work come together in this exhibition, encompassing two distanced angles on the same subject of space; large-scale urban plans and small-scale delicate interiors. In the diamond, square and triangle-shaped urban plans and unsymmetrically organised spaces, Hashemi reimagines our homes, offices and cultural centres. Domes become social and medical services, and places are no longer connected by roads, but by interconnected diamond shaped cul-de-sacs, that allow for bodies to gather but not cars. Colours become representative of different functions such as solar energy facilities, green spaces and waterways, being some of them. There are big black spaces scattered across all drawings; large voids amongst buildings, only bridged and connected in limited places. In the midst of all this there are squares filled with hearts, cross hatches and stars, representing lively homes with different inhabitants. These homes - much like the interior of the gallery - are sectioned by communally made crochet pieces, hanging like curtains from the ceiling and spreading out of walls or rising from the floor. 52

They become delicate partitions that separate two spaces without fully concealing them from one another; embracing one without suffocating the other and shielding without hiding anything from it. These works are handmade by a community of women and bring a colourful and protective feel to these future homes. Her pieces invite us to unfold these ides into a connected realm of imagination that shows us how we could live in a more integral, sustainable, community-oriented society. ✤

VENUE: Ayyam Gallery DATE: Until September 20

ver five hundred years ago, Sir Thomas More wrote ‘Utopia’; a novel proposing an ideal form of human organisation. The word ‘utopia’ translates as ‘no place’, existing only as an unreachable state of perfection. Yet ‘no place’ is exactly how this generation feels about the idea of belonging. Instead, we live in a world where the majority of citizens have lost their hope in the existence of a system able to accommodate all of its inhabitants. you + topia touches on cultural, social, and geo-political problems of contemporary Middle- Eastern artists. These artists use art as a battleground to reflect on anxiety and optimism, while offering a place of resistance in a climate where we co-exist between war and terror. In order to maintain identity within the ever-changing landscape between real and ideal, the artists depict their true tones through images of collapsing worlds and places of tension. In the meanwhile, the desire and expectations of a true ‘utopia’ reside on the borderline; a place of obstruction. ✤

icky Nodjoumi’s first solo exhibition at The Third Line has been curated by Media Farzin for Bidoun. The show features Nicky’s work from the past two years, including large and small-scale oils on canvas, ink drawings, and a collection of archival source imagery

and collages. Nicky Nodjoumi is a figurative painter with an abstract sensibility. His paintings explore the emotional dynamics of contemporary politics. The brushwork is quick, loose, and expressive, though the compositions are carefully worked out well in advance. His protagonists are often men in suits — the uniform of contemporary authority — painted against spare backgrounds. Nicky’s recent body of work focuses on breaks, ruptures, and the layering of objects and bodies. He uses found photographs to make collages that repeat the same image with small shifts in scale. A selection of his working sketches and collages, drawn from his archive of source material, is also on view. In the final work, bodies are crisscrossed by sometimes violent slicing and fractures — vivid traces of the social violence that has caught up with them. The artist captures the spectacular hypocrisy of political rituals and gestures in a sensory rather than narrative way. The space of the 54

D I S LO C AT E D DESIRES

EXHIBITION: What Satisfaction Could You Possibly Have ARTIST: Monika Grabuschnigg VENUE: Carbon 12 Dubai DATE: Until September 2

C

ombining large-scale clay reliefs and drawings, Monika Grabuschnigg’s first solo exhibition, What satisfaction could you possibly have, explores the dislocated intimacies and disembodied desires of humans living in highly digitised societies. How we search for and connect with others, how we long for, flirt and fantasise together is changing dramatically. The apps and websites we turn to seem to offer direct portals to other lives – immediate and intimate interactions that can lead to in-the-flesh satisfactions. But there is no unmediated exchange: we are subject to, and encouraged to enact, self-censorship, self-exploitation. Our loves and loneliness mined for profit. Each of us put to work as blister-thumbed miner. Both the reliefs and drawings in the show reference the everpresent screens through which this happens. We see fractured and repaired bodies morphing into one another; cropped and cracked identities exaggerated and engorged by algorithmic bias; characterlimited emotions congealing into searching limbs, messy embraces and visceral gazes. Materially vulnerable, tonally fleshy, the inch-thick, flat-to-the-wall reliefs feel like substantial moments captured through a haze of distortion: the analog and digital worlds clashing head-on. The forms in the drawings are more of-this-worldly, but more deeply mired in dream-states. Created after (rather than as sketches for) the reliefs they feel like moments of surveillance: evidence gathered from tapping the data flows between the babbling ceramic.

The works are also intensely human – or human-ish. An ish that makes them all the more engaging. There is no easy, singular narrative on offer. Instead we are confronted with an insistent, information-rich polyphony: a polyamory of meaning. We see you, these works say, because you see us. We know you, because you know us. We surround you, because we are you. ✤

ach Day an Artist is an exhibition conceived for the holy month of Ramadan. We propose a new way of viewing art during a month when, for 30 days, daily life takes on a new rhythm. Ramadan, as well as being a month of fasting, is a period where we are encouraged to slow down, reflect and reconnect with family, friends and the greater community. It is also a month when the relationship to time becomes overriding: there are strict eating and fasting times, late evening prayers and reduced working hours. The exhibition opened on May 12 with the work of one artist, and every day a new artist was added. Over the run of the exhibition, a total of 30 artists are being showcased. The list of invited artists will reflect the gallery’s personal interests – the directors and other members of the gallery. The exhibition includes artists from the gallery’s roster as well as artists working with other galleries in Dubai. Many have never exhibited in the gallery or alongside the other artists being shown. E V E R Y D AY CHAOS

EXHIBITION: Inner and Outer Space ARTIST: Kenny Scharf VENUE: Leila Heller Gallery DATE: Until August 31

T

he first solo exhibition in the UAE by Kenny Scharf (b. 1958), muralist, painter, sculptor, and installation artist, best known for his fantastical, large-scale paintings of anthropomorphic animals and imagined creatures. The exhibition features a selection of large-scale works on canvas as well as relief sculptures comprised of oil painted televisions and small assemblages of found objects. His new body of work is a reaction to what he perceives as our ‘increasingly out-of-control situation’, depicted by the melting faces in his paintings. Scharf’s work continues to reflect his inexhaustible optimism and his sense of fun but has always been engaged with profound issues beneath the facade. Ecology, the environment, and capitalist excess have long been central themes. More recently, his paintings reflect his environmental concerns over the petroleum industry. Large-scale, bright, colorful paintings, murals, drawings, sculptures,

prints and installations define Kenny Scharf’s oeuvre, often depicting animated cartoons or imagined creatures. With a child-like appeal, his work is often described as playful, optimistic, bubbly and full of joy. Beneath the colorful and idyllic surface of his paintings and collages, Scharf references the darker issues of the modern world. He categorises his art as ‘pop surrealism’, drawing inspiration from the realm of the unconscious, explaining that his own unconscious is full of pop imagery. He cites surrealism and abstract expressionism as his major influences. The use of cartoon faces allows Scharf to express emotion with abstract power. Since his childhood, Scharf has been fascinated by outer space. Space travel and the portrayal of infinite space have long been central themes. In his life and in his work, he tries to eliminate boundaries and borders. He is increasingly preoccupied with the inner space of painting, his exploration of which creates a dynamic tension with his passion for outer space. With his characteristic exuberance and moral voice, Scharf reformulates his unique combination of Pollock and Pop to create a vibrant new body of work. ✤

MODERN LUXURY:

THE NEW JAGUAR E-PACE

fact magazine

61

• CITY RIDES

It might only be a cub in the SUV club but this Jaguar is still ready to lead the pack as FACT finds out in our latest test drive...

T

he Jaguar story is not a new one, but rather an evolving journey. Once upon a time, Jaguar made only classic luxury saloons and the odd coupe and convertible aimed at wellheeled older drivers. But, it’s 2018 and the manufacturer wants to be seen as a brand that keeps up with the Joneses – and, rightly so. It’s been less than two years since Jaguar launched its first SUV, the outstanding F-Pace, and now it returns in the booming mid-size premium SUV segment with its smaller – and very impressive – E-PACE. The Jaguar E-PACE is a five-seat, compact SUV that packs the design and performance of a Jaguar sports car into a spacious, practical and connected all-wheel-drive vehicle. If you love the look of a slick, sporty machine but you’re looking for sensible and reliable features and performance, this is the car for you. Trademark Jaguar driving dynamics and design put the brand’s sports car DNA in a neatly packed segment with advanced technologies to keep you connected. The exterior design is inspired by the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car and characterised by the distinctive Jaguar grille, muscular proportions, short overhangs and powerful haunches that give the E-PACE a bold and purposeful stance, instantly communicating dynamic agility. Jaguar’s nod to its sports car genes is also evident in the fast sweep of the roofline and the distinctive side window graphic. The E-PACE is also packing under the hood. It’s available with a powerful 300PS Ingenium petrol turbo engine powering the sporting SUV from 0-100km/h in just 6.4 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 243km/h. Call it a baby crossover now. We dare you. This machine is ready to roll with the big boys. Configurable Dynamics gives the driver even more control with individual settings for the throttle, automatic transmission, steering, and, where fitted, the Adaptive Dynamics suspension system. Adaptive Dynamics senses driver input, body and wheel movements and pre-emptively loads the suspension and chassis and adjusts the damping for improved roll control and agility in all conditions. E-PACE’s Active Driveline all-wheel-drive system is a technological first for Jaguar. The intelligent set-up combines phenomenal traction with Jaguar’s unmistakable rearwheel-drive character. The system’s torque-biasing capability 62

delivers optimal stability, dynamics and fuel efficiency in all conditions and all weathers. On the UAE roads, this is a Godsend as driving environments can really vary throughout the year. The strong chassis also allows owners to tow up to 1,800kg (braked), ideal for customers who use their E-PACE for both business and pleasure. It seems that, so far, the E-PACE ticks all the boxes. But, does Jaguar’s smallest SUV have the potential to steal buyers from both small and mid-size prestige SUVs from the established brands? We’re talking everything from Audi’s Q2, Q3 and Q5, to the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLC, BMW’s X1, X2 and X3, the Volvo XC40 and XC60 and even top-end versions of the Volkswagen Tiguan and top-selling Mazda CX-5. The appeal of the Jaguar E-PACE comes not only from straddling the small and medium luxury SUV segments – two of the biggest and fastest growing market sectors in the Middle East, but also for its seductive design, superior performance, competitive pricing and dynamic handling. Take another feature which is the very first for Jaguar; the company’s next-generation Head-Up Display technology. The advanced display can project up to 66 per cent more information onto the windscreen using large, full-colour graphics with enhanced clarity. Essential information including vehicle speed and navigation directions are in full view at all times, with alerts and updates for the infotainment, safety and convenience features all projected directly into the driver’s eyeline – reducing the need to look away from the road – and we all know just how important that is in this country, where driving can be a daunting task. Talking of staying alert, the E-PACE features the very latest safety and driver assistance technologies. A stereo camera which supports Lane Keep Assist and also combines with the electric power assisted steering system and rear radars to deliver a Blind Spot Assist function, to help reduce the risk of sideswipe collisions on multi-lane roads. A new Forward Traffic Detection system also warns drivers of approaching vehicles at junctions where visibility is restricted.

For both collections, Kenzo aims to capture the duality of the two figures. It looks to the era when they both ruled on two distant continents; to Ryuichi’s personal flair when questioning the norm, and to Sayoko’s ability to mix patterns, prints, silhouettes, and colours. For the women’s collection, Kenzo worked with clashing stripes and florals. Paisley skirts meet racing tees. Ruffled dresses in crepe appear with floral jacquard coats. Men’s tailored elements contrast with boldly-feminine metallic silks or memory satin in dusty pinks. Reversible raincoats offer the option of a classic trench or high gloss. Trouser shapes are the meeting of ski pants and bikers. Baby blue, vivid yellow and fuchsia transparent organzas are worn over graphic skirts and tops. Women’s accessories pack a floral punch with especially conceived flower appliqués on belts, chokers and materially mélanged sandals. The new ‘gyoza’ tote with a ball clasp fastening makes its debut in vivid neon, stripes or patent leather. The men’s collection’s style is reminiscent of Ryuichi’s individualism. A collage of British tailoring and Japanese baseball, shapes are strong shouldered and highwaisted. 50’s baseball trousers are matched with graphic album cover tees. Prints exclusively supplied by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself are worn alongside paisley and striped trousers and tops. Men’s trench belts are worn affixed to trousers or extralong. The micro gym bags come in a leather nylon mix. Flat soled boots or sandals complement the cropped finish trousers. ✤

TROPICAL FIESTA

The top of the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai’s Business Bay has recently become home to Hotel Cartagena, a frivolous and fun concept that takes over the space to bring rainforest vibes and Latin American fare to your dining experience. FACT’s David Tapley checks it out… fact magazine

H

otel Cartagena makes quite the first impression, replacing the cruise-ship stylings of the venue’s previous guise with an eclectic jungle theme. Starting with a red neon sign indicating the entrance to the fictitious hotel of the restaurants namesake and guiding the way into an elevator emblazoned with the image of a black jaguar. Once inside, the split-level restaurant is full of quirky artefacts such as plastic flamingoes, parrots and an abundance of foliage, quite literally hanging from the ceiling. It’s a dazzling display of interior design that reminds us of London’s Rainforest Cafe. Hotel Cartagena feels less gimmicky, with the decor working to complement rather than detract from the impressive Burj Khalifa views, which only become heightened in the 360-degree circular space as the city transforms from day to night. Hotel Cartagena utilises a fictional character to anchor the concept. The hotel themed restaurant provides diners with an enchanting and bohemian space inhabited by protagonist Mrs. Buendia who has collected trinkets and letters (the menus) left behind by guests since she inherited the property in the 1950s. The approach is certainly a novel one and the idea of making the restaurant space part of the interplay with diners is a clever move that pays dividends for this jungle paradise situated 72 floors above Dubai. Named after the coastal city of Cartagena in Columbia, the menu is expectedly South American, drawing inspiration from the continent and beyond. Hints of the Caribbean islands are evident, alongside an interesting Korean slant from Chef Peppe whose passion for Latin American food has brought him to Hotel Cartagena from Abu Dhabi’s Asia De Cuba. The menu which is still undergoing refinement is described as ‘Latin America without borders’ which adds a fusion element and playfulness to the cuisine. We bypass tacos in favour of Ropa Vieja, a generously stuffed beef cheek empanada in which the meat is rich and tender and contains a hint of chipotle. Yet it’s the flaky golden pastry of the empanada ‘shell’ that works wonders and brings an additional texture to the street food favourite. Street food makes up a large portion of the appetisers and it’s the chicharones which account for our favourite dish of the day. While chicharones are normally made from the cooking of pork within its own fat, Hotel Cartagena have

spun the idea to encompass shrimp, octopus, chicken and corn. We enjoy the latter option with the corn utilising smoked paprika, manchego cheese and an addictive lime cream. There’s no easy way to eat the dish, other than with hands, but the sweet and spicy reward is worth the mess! We can’t dine Latin American style without ceviche and the Picanteria Ceviche makes for another generous portion. Blending together shrimp, seabass, scallops, rocoto peppers and Asian pears, it’s a beguiling choice served amongst smoky theatrics that’s representative of the dishes Peruvian namesake and packs quite the fiery punch. While Hotel Cartagena offers diners an impressive selection of seafood (coconut lobster curry, grilled scallops and seafood paella) we’re immediately drawn to the octopus a la papilla served with purple Andean potatoes. We will always order the grilled mollusk if it appears on the menu, and despite the tentacle we’re served being seductivley tender, the flavours on the plate are lacking and it’s the only dish we leave mostly untouched. With little room for desserts we’re swayed into trying some of the signatures. The concise menu of just four dishes is presented inside an envelope sealed by a kiss from Mrs. Buendia herself. While the churros are served with a duo of glorious dipping sauces — a passionfruit curd and South American Guanjana chocolate — and the dough is a crisp delight! The cocoloco however, makes for a 100% vegan alternative. A light and refreshing end to the meal, presenting a chocolate husk filled with coconut snow and adorned with a tropical fruit salsa that encapsulates the very essence of Hotel Cartagena in one final dish. Dining at Hotel Cartagena makes for a satisfying experience that rewards the adventurous diner (we tried Yucca for the first time). Featuring bold flavours, generous portions and a sharing concept that finally presents the selections in even numbers (meaning two people can actually share), Hotel Cartagena is the embodiment of impressive from the moment you step in. ✤

GOT BEEF? Calling all carnivores! There’s a DIFC restaurant just for you in the form of newly opened premium steakhouse BeefBar. FACT’s David Tapley was one of the first diners to get his meat fix on…

O

n first impression BeefBar appears to be all about marbling, whether that be in the form of the meat it serves or the black stone that makes up much of the decor of this upmarket spot. A premium butchers shop greets diners at the entrance with fridges backed with black marble and hung with a selection of beef. Appearing more like haute couture gowns, we cannot help but be reminded of the infamous ‘meat dress’ worn by Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV VMAs. An in house butcher is on hand to advise on the best charcuterie and premium cuts, which are available to take home too. A sense of luxury may be the feeling that BeefBar is trying to evoke, but within the confines of the restaurant space (previously home to contemporary Middle Eastern spot Cle) the vibe is altogether more casual. The restaurant space is split into three sections — butchery, lounge, and dining room. The detailing is impeccable throughout, with wicker walls, leather upholstery and hints of gold giving the impression of a colonial safari lodge, except instead of elephants you’re waiting on a different kind of omnivore (the beef!). Our meal begins with cured bresaola upon crisp bread, before literally lighting up the room with a blowtorched carpaccio topped with a light truffle creme. Theatrics that certainly create quite the first impression. The starters labelled as ‘street food’ include the popular taste of Kobe selection which brings international flare to the sought after beef in the form of sliders and tartare. Then there’s the tacos which blend sweet and spicy together well but are not representative of the most memorable of appetisers. The 86

gyoza fares much better, impeccably seasoned, the meat takes on a subtle char and the texture is almost pulled in nature. With such a masterful interior, it’s a real shame the gyoza wrapper itself is a touch too thick to make this a perfect dish. The trio of bite sized Kobe sliders are an absolute delight. Sweet brioche buns filled with succulent beef patties that are bursting with flavour via a combination of jalapeño, truffle and habanero fillings. The latter would be our choice and the quality of the meat is clearly evident. Though typical of sharing style portions with their uneven numbers, we’re left fighting over the third slider. From the raw section the crispy fillet carpaccio with rocket and parmesan is quite the revelation, presented upon a crisp filo base and slathered in a sweet maple glaze this particular steakhouse classic is anything but traditional. Likewise, the

raspberry ceviche is better than any of the raw dishes we sampled at neighbouring Crazy Fish (with which BeefBar shares a bathroom), there’s an exceptional sweetness from the raspberry which complements the sea bass and avocado admirably. For the main course we put our trust in our friendly waiter, dressed in a leather butchers apron to further enhance the butcher-shop theme. With an Emperor cut of Prime Kobe at almost AED1000 for 200g, an Iberia lamb, one fish choice and a couple of pasta options - we’re unsure of what to order. We’re confidently steered towards the 360 day grain fed Australian F1 Wagyu Cross ribeye and the filet mignon of the same breed. All meats are sliced tableside, meaning there’s absolutely no work for diners, aside from enjoying the meal. BeefBar offers ELEVEN varieties of mashed potato ranging from classic to caviar adorned (though the AED220 dirham price tag may be a little too much for some) and zero sauces. The potato is creamy and feels like a direct hug to the heart, comforting and hearty. The decision to let the premium beef speak for itself is a wise one and with ample seasoning is transpires that sauces aren’t required. BeefBar’s dessert menu is a concise offering featuring the likes of French Toast and cheesecake. Again placing ourselves in the hands of the staff we’re recommended the chocolate soufflé. Expecting it to be a lighter way to end the meal, we couldn’t have been more wrong! A glorious soufflé rising out of a large copper vat that is more than enough for two diners. BeefBar situated in Al Fattan Currency House is without a doubt a meat lovers’ paradise. In a market rife with steakhouses, BeefBar does well to assert itself and stand out from the crowd. As the only restaurant in Dubai currently serving certified Japanese Kobe (with a 10+ marbling score) amongst it’s countless beef options, this is likely to be enough of a draw. ✤

ne of the many highlights of a recent trip to Jordan was 24 hours mudding up and buoyant floating in the Dead Sea. So when the team at JW Marriott Marquis Dubai’s Saray Spa offered me the chance to sample their Signature Dead Sea Journey treatment, I was there before you could say, “mud

me”. Part of the spa’s Arabian Body Rituals, each treatment aims to take visitors on a journey through the heart of Arabia along various trade roads frequented by Bedouin travels. Through these journeys the merchants had access to the most precious commodities in the region from Frankincense to exotic Jasmine to the healing salts of the Dead Sea. This Saray Signature Journey focuses on the latter, taking inspiration from legends that say Queen of Sheba and Cleopatra set up their own spas along the Dead Sea’s highly salted shores. After a brief consultation I’m lead to the treatment room, which is lit by the azure glow of a giant floatation pool (more on that later). The treatment starts with an energising scrub made up of Dead Sea salts, before my friendly therapist coats me in Dead Sea mud and wraps me in layers of plastic and towels. At this point I should note that, while the real deal is un-missable, the mud at Saray Spa smells far more delicious than the sulphuric black stuff we smeared ourselves in while visiting Jordan. While the mud does it’s healing thing, I’m given a quick facial treatment and an incredible head massage. One quick shower later and I’m weightlessly skimming the service of my very own Dead Sea floatation pool. Again, while the actual Dead Sea is an

experience of a lifetime, I can’t help but compare the bracing November seawater with this soothing, salty bath. It’s beyond relaxing and (with the therapeutic salt minerals containing high levels of calcium, magnesium, bromide, potassium and sulphate) aiding various skin, muscle and joint issues while I float. I’m reluctantly called from the pool for the final part of the 120-minute treatment, a 45-minute body oil massage. While my therapist works away any final tension knots with a stimulating blend of black seed and citrus oil, I will the seconds to count down more slowly so I can stay in this room forever (or at least another hour). When I finally emerge, exhilarated and tranquilised in equal measures, I feel like I have been on a journey of sorts. From slightly-stressed city dweller cramming in a treatment on a busy weekend, to blissed-out Queen who would happily have hung around in that floatation pool all day. Next time I find myself fancying a Dead Sea experience but with no time to jump on a plane to Jordan, I’ll head to the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai – and so should you. ✤

or those of you who aren’t familiar with Starvac (it’s new to us as well) this innovative, anti-cellulite vacuum treatment was born in France and has since been developed, with over 45 years’ experience as a non-aggressive alternative to fight off cellulite, stretch marks and the signs of aging without going under the knife. Their advanced patented technology, Stretching Cellulaire, allows for the therapy to work its magic by boosting the skin’s elasticity which aids in minimising cellulite, making the process perfectly safe and effective for the face and body. Sound too good to be true? Let us take you through the experience. Before arriving at NStyle Dubai Mall, we didn’t really know what to expect. So, a little bit of research and a few YouTube videos later, we came to understand that Starvac can be incredibly beneficial to anyone whose skin needs some serious TLC. Not only does it tackle cellulite and stretch marks, it works to leave the skin firmer, smoother and healthier. But, much like a number of therapies, regular treatments equals better, long-lasting results. Walk into NStyle Dubai Mall and you’ll find seclusion away from the chaos outside. Welcomed by friendly staff, we’re told a little bit more about the treatment and fill in some health and safety forms. After being led into the room where the Starvac machine stands tall and proud. Surprisingly the treatment also includes a lymphatic drainage that brings all the benefits of a manual massage into the mix, promoting toxin removal and improving oxygen supply to tissues, which increases the feeling of wellbeing. It’s the perfect balance of pleasantly vigorous with bizarrely relaxing. By the end of the treatment, we can’t stop admiring the handiwork of a machine. Skin is silkier and appears looking beach ready. Although the therapist recommends you have 10-12 treatments for REALLY amazing results, we can already notice a difference after just one. This is an effective, and essentially, a body-modelling treatment that dislodges the fat pockets, boosts the skin’s elasticity, improves appearance and removes cellulite at the same time – is there anything else that a millennial could ask for right now. If you’ve had enough of the juicing and don’t want to pay crazy bucks or take the risk of a surgical treatment, this is the ultimate gift from the beauty Gods for slimming, detoxing and shaping the body. To top that off, it’s completely painless. We’re usually quite skeptical when it comes to “fad” treatments but after trying Starvac, we’re slowly coming around to the newage innovation that seems to be prevailing in the 2018 wellness industry. ✤
