I

t’s my sixth summer here in the Gulf and, let me get straight to the facts: it doesn’t get easier to handle the heat. There’s nothing like the scorchin’ sun and dry heat of a UAE summer, where the a/c is your best friend and you could easily consume a year’s worth of your favourite Baskin Robbins flavoured ice cream in a matter of days (side confession: I’ve never been to Baskin Robbins so it’s probably a Pinkberry summer for me). Regardless, if you’re not travelling during the summer months, the Gulf can become a challenging place to be.

That is, of course, until we tell you why summer in Dubai could actually be a blessing in disguise. Aside from the fact that school’s out and traffic is mild (yay), there are so many amazing deals to take advantage of courtesy of the local hospitality scene.

MORE OF THE PHANTOM Broadway Entertainment Group and Dubai Opera have announced that eight more shows have been added to the autumn run of The Phantom of the Opera.

THEATRE FANS AND AFICIONADOS will now have one more week to see the world’s most popular musical when it makes its Middle East debut. Launching on October 16 and running until November 6, The Phantom of the Opera will now run for a total of three weeks, with tickets for the extended dates on sale to the general public now.

ashkeel, one of Dubai’s leading centre for homegrown art and design, will celebrate the 10th edition of its annual summer exhibition with a display of diverse works that represent the breadth and depth of the current artistic practice in the UAE. The 10th anniversary edition of Made in Tashkeel will showcase more than 100 works by 58 UAE-based artists from 29 different countries. The individual pieces and series of artworks on display have been created by members, workshop participants, instructors and staff in the last 12 months. They explore myriad themes, such as the human condition, evolving UAE society, a satirical take on modern food culture, and spiritual liberation.

Lisa Ball-Lechgar, Deputy Director of Tashkeel, said: “Made in Tashkeel plays a pivotal role in opening avenues for our growing community of promising artists and designers. The format of the exhibition enables practitioners from various artistic disciplines to present their distinct and novel works, many of which were created in our multidisciplinary studios and workspaces.

“We are particularly proud of this year’s edition as we have the highest number of artists from more than 29 countries participating, making this our most diverse summer showcase yet,” she added.

Spanning a wide range of disciplines, the works take many forms, including photography (analogue and digital), mixed media, textiles, screen printing, sculpture, installation, calligraphy, painting, jewellery, and woodcuts. Each individual has been part of the Tashkeel journey, whether as a member, instructor, artist-inresidence or participant in a solo or group show. Selected works will be available for sale, starting from AED350.

Exhibits this year include architect and illustrator Ruba Al Araji’s ‘Temporary Memory’, screen-printed using fluorescent inks on the vacuum bed; fashion designer Kay Li’s ‘Shadow’, a textile art piece combining textile smocking and metallic foiling techniques on translucent fabrics using the heat press; multi-disciplinary artist Gosia Van Unen’s ‘Back to Square One’ made with cotton thread on perforated acrylic panel in the Fine Art Studio; Analog Photography in the UAE group member Anna Shtraus’s ‘Driving in the Rain’ photograph, shot in Sharjah and printed on Tashkeel’s Epson digital printers using museum-grade paper and inks. Tashkeel’s range of initiatives includes: Tanween, which takes a selected cohort of emerging UAE-based designers through a nine-month development programme to take a product inspired by the surroundings of the UAE from concept to completion; critical practice, which invites visual artists to embark on a one-year development programme of studio practice, mentorship and training that culminates in a major solo presentation; MakeWorks UAE, an online platform connecting creatives and fabricators to enable designers and artists accurate and efficient access to the UAE manufacturing sector; exhibitions and workshops to challenge artistic practice, enable capacity building and grow audience for the arts in the UAE; and the heart of Tashkeel, its membership, a community of creatives with access to facilities and studio spaces to refine their skills, undertake collaborations and pursue professional careers.

An album entrenched in the concept of urban nihilism; Bastille’s newest offering is worlds apart from their previous fulllengths. Displaying an array of characters and recurrent themes, the album offers a breathtaking mixture of emotion and energy.

An opening scene-setter, Quarter Past Midnight is all about escapism and carries a very distinct sound. A further step away from their debut album, the track offers a more electronic vibe, while heavy use of guitar gives the single a rock feel. While the band is aiming to achieve a complete 180 on their politically aware predecessor, reality does seem to make its existence known every now and then. Joy featuring great vocals and an awesome production, talks about the little things that bring us joy when no one is looking. Far more uplifting and hopeful than most of their work, the British alt band has a winner on their hands. A vivid illustration of humanity, adventure and imagination, Bastille’s Doom Days has turned out to be a treat that was definitely more than worth the wait. The band is truly leveling up!

Half a century after everyone’s favourite Mexican American rockers mesmerised us with their interpretation of a song by a Nigerian percussionist, the band’s latest album is their very own love letter to Africa. Infused with African rhythms and a unique freedom that in inherent in all Santana songs, Africa Speaks manages to stay close to their roots while still venturing into uncharted territory. Featuring fiery guitar work by Carlos Santana, Breaking Down the Doors has an upbeat sound that distracts from its dark lyrics. Interspersed with Carlos playing guitar and Buika singing, it makes for a danceable tune. Unfolding more Jazz tunes and finding their way as they go, Yo Me Lo Merezco conjures up early band sounds and melodies. A tribute to Carlos’ overriding humility, the track features electric guitar chords that melt in and out. RELAXATION REFINED Just when we thought we’d experienced it all, we venture to the beachfront of Mandarin Oriental Jumeira. It’s a beautiful breezy day and the team equips us with our very own little round beach bags filled with cold towels and water. They also give you a round buzzer which is handy for getting a waiter’s attention if you want to order food and drinks. The beach is one of the best stretches of sand in Dubai and we’re surprised with numerous little treats like fruit punch shots (non alcoholic) and watermelon bites which come round as complimentary snacks for hotel guests. The pool area is also one of the nicest we’ve been to in Dubai with plenty of loungers and cabanas – the vibe is very summertime fine with everyone in a chilled out mood, enjoying a good book, chatting with friends or taking lazy swims.

We also try out the spa and we’re mesmerised from the moment we walk through the doors. At the Spa at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, there is a clear passion for wellness, placing your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing at the centre of everything they do. Guided by the oriental heritage and influenced by the local cultural diversity of the UAE, the Spa offers a host of treatments and therapies unique to Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai. What’s nice is that the therapies doesn't rush us to get up and leave once finished, she encourages naturally waking up and having a stretch to bring your senses back to the real world. Hot tea with a selection of nuts and dates is served in the relaxation lounge as we take deep breaths and come back to centre, ready to tackle the Dubai bustle outside this sanctuary.

What pleases us the most about Tasca is the atmosphere. The restaurant is abuzz with diners when we visit – somebody celebrating a birthday, colleagues grabbing drinks after work, couples enjoying an intimate meal and families letting their taste buds explore new dishes for the evening.

Served tapas style, the portions at Tasca are brilliant for sharing, and as they’re not fully-loaded, it allows the diner to order a variety of menu items, meaning you can actually try everything you like the sound of.

We’d highly recommend the Braised and Marinated Tuna, the Garlic Prawns and the Pan Fried Wagyu – all standout with flavours. Service is at the level of what’s to be expected at a venue that belongs to a Michelin-Starred chef – everyone is clued up on the food and eager to make recommendations too. An excellent dining option for when you’re staying here!

To top that off, the hotel also houses Japanese Steakhouse, Netsu; international eatery, The Bay; the very elegant Noor Lounge where afternoon tea seems to be a hit with Dubai’s elite; pool bar Sun Vibe, The Mandarin Cake Shop and the very bespoke Beluga caviar bar round off the dining options.

e arrive at Sofitel The Palm and are automatically greeted with a warm welcome and a very swift check-in. We take a moment to appreciate the stunning lobby with bursts of tropical landscaping – a feature wall filled with 170 types of plants from France and beautifully arranged blooms – providing us with plenty of photo opportunities.

Culture and architecture of the South Pacific flows beautifully at every angle of the hotel, we are in awe. The 5-star hotel features 361 luxury rooms, including 124 suites. We’re staying in the Luxury Suite which is 44 sqm of absolute comfort. As we enter the room, we automatically feel at home.

Overlooking the front of the property to the Arabian sea, the spacious terrace is a perfect place to read a book over a cup of tea or coffee. Accents of onyx, stone and exotic dark wood, with a colour palette that evokes the Polynesian seaside and landscape are all present in this sprawling accommodation.

The contemporary rooms and suites at the hotel feature free Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs, Bose Wave audio system, mini bar and all the usual amenities for a comfortable and convenient stay. We love the open plan bathroom with its huge tub and rain shower too.

The resort has 12 restaurants, bars and lounges, with something for everyone – casual dining, familyfriendly or upscale. We dine at Porter House, which offers succulent steaks and grills. The kitchen is open plan, and the restaurant has understated tones, with low lighting and subtle Jazz playing in the background – which we really appreciated. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and personable, talking us through the menu options. Be prepared for some serious food envy! Our steak is perfectly cooked with delicious mash and vegetable sides.

when it came to the meat. It was carved right at the table whilst the waiter explained more about the ingredients that were used. A lovely interactive touch. This place is a steak lover’s dream, importing prime cuts of meat from celebrated sources around the world. Highly recommended!

Let go of your stress! A staycation wouldn’t be complete without some spa time. We arrived early for our treatment at Sofitel Spa and made good use of the 2,500 sqm sanctuary. We were welcomed with a refreshing tea followed by a tour by the highly trained therapists. The Sofitel Spa offers 28 treatment rooms, six pools, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, and before indulging in a 50-minute signature massage, we indulged in the facilities to really unwind. Feeling extremely relaxed, we end our spa afternoon in the outdoor infinity pool.

For those wanting to work out, Sofitel Fitness is open to both resort guests and residents. Certified fitness instructors are on hand to offer assistance and advice. FloatFit HIIT, personal fitness training, tennis lessons, swim lessons and group classes are all available upon request. Great for those who want to stay on their fitness regime during their stay. Sofitel The Palm has a magnificent 500-meter private beach, we spend the day relaxing and soaking up the summer sun. A real treat as the beach is not crowded and has an exclusive feel.

The hospitality and friendliness of the staff in all areas of the hotel was one of the highlights for us. Nothing was too much, and to be greeted so sincerely throughout the resort, from the moment of getting out of the car until leaving – made our stay all the more special. We were even greeted by the General Manager to ask how our stay was – this was a lovely surprise.

It was great to see a varied mix of families and residents making use of the facilities. Our stay was pure bliss – just what the doctor ordered. We left feeling like we were on vacation even though we were still in Dubai – and THAT is exactly the feeling you deserve on your next summer staycation! ✤

o, this is what it feels like to actually drive one of those nice cars you pass in a Careem on the way to meetings? Ok, we’re game. Let’s go.

If you’re accustomed to driving SUVs, this is going to take some adjusting. Inside, the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe is as impressive as it is overwhelming. There is a control for literally everything you could think of; headrest, backrest, phonebook, driving mode, full seat regulators and two displays under one shared glass cover that blend into a Widescreen Cockpit – to name but a few of the functions.

Once you’ve figured out all the different controllers (it’s not as intimidating as it looks), the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe quickly starts to become a car with not only class, but also tons of convenience.

The interior of the new AMG 53 model welcomes passengers with model-specific, exclusive appointments, luxurious materials and significantly extended options.

The innovative control and display concept with bright, high-resolution displays optionally with 12.3-inch screen diagonal in each case are a central element that emphasises the horizontal orientation of the interior design. We imagine that this is what a DJ feels like on the decks; comfortable and familiar with their trusted tools and everything they need for a smooth-riding gig.

• CITY RIDES On one of the days that we had this beautiful machine, the weather took an incredibly humid turn and we found that the windscreen was constantly rocking a stubborn spell of mist.

The cause of your car windscreen misting up is actually down to water vapour in the atmosphere that occurs when your body heats the air inside the cabin – as does your breath – increasing the amount of moisture it can hold. This means that when it comes into contact with your windscreen it cools and condenses, forming a 'mist'. Usually not an issue as you can play around with the climate and a/c controls, however, the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe presented a trial and error situation that took numerous adjustments to get it right and mist be gone.

On the plus side, we were still able to control the playlist and that helped to keep our cool. Also, by way of instrument cluster, the optional Widescreen Cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver, as well as a central display above the centre console. Because the cockpit is fully digital, drivers can choose the look from the three different display styles "Classic", "Sporty" and "Progressive" and also configure the information and views relevant to them at will. We particularly enjoyed “Classic” and really took advantage of the touch-sensitive Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel which respond to swiping movements. They enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel.

Bonus!

Via the AMG menu, it is possible to display the engine and transmission, oil temperature, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, engine output and torque, boost (charge pressure), tyre temperatures and pressures as well as the current vehicle set-up. This is a really helpful feature for anyone who drives constant long distances between the Emirates and needs a reminder to give your car some TLC and keep it in the safest shape possible.

One of the coolest features that all you tech-savvy drivers will appreciate is that the infotainment system can also be operated

by Linguatronic voice control which has been extended to include vehicle functions. Now, the air conditioning and seat heating/ventilation, interior lights and the optional head-up display can also be controlled by voice commands. It’s all in the details and Mercedes have got it just right.

Let’s talk performance because it’s definitely powerful. With a sporty style and high efficiency, the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe is definitely made for a sophisticated drive. At the heart lies a new, electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twinturbocharging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm. It is characterised by top-of-the-range performance and intelligent electrification. The engine's EQ Boost starteralternator combines a starter motor and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is fitted between the engine and transmission.

This innovation as well as the intelligent charging via an electric auxiliary compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger all have the same goal: to enhance the hallmark AMG performance and driving dynamics, while at the same time reducing fuel 60

consumption and emissions. Again, you might experience a few jolts until you’ve really sunk in and got your grip on the vehicle.

We also found that when moving off, high charge pressure built up slower than expected and there was a little delay in torque for acceleration. Mercedes has stated that the 3.0-litre engine reacts extremely spontaneously and provides a highly dynamic response without turbo lag. Though this may be true, it feels like when you buy a new pair of shoes and really have to break them in. The same goes for this car, once you’ve found your groove, it’s smooth sailing from then on.

Aesthetically, this car is a ten – both exterior and interior. The sense of exclusivity and sportiness is also underscored by the sports seats with AMG-specific seat upholstery layout and AMG badge, red seat belts plus trim elements in carbon fibre or glass fibre in matt silver. When you’re driving in the Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Coupe down Sheikh Zayed Road, it’s the equivalent of a supermodel walking a fashion week runway. This car is a definite head turner.

A history-making moment for Coca-Cola Arena as Maroon 5 take the title of first musical act to perform at the new venue, as part of their worldwide Red Pill Blues Tour. For many attending the concert, it was their first look at the arena, and it didn’t fail to impress. e’ve visited Chival on a number of occasions and it has always been impressive.

On our latest midday rendezvous was a breath of fresh air. Light floods the interior dining area which is made up of chic but comfortable seating. There’s enough space between tables to give you privacy, yet there’s a true social vibe that feels creative and productive (many people are clearly there to work with laptops out and their choice of liquid concoction on the side). There’s a nice inviting feel, everyone seems to be on the same page and there’s a sense of unspoken camaraderie between the guests. We were happy to join them. The feminine décor also boasts a grand outdoor seating area, with an extensive range of menus available throughout the day.

Chival is also a hub for healthy food. Here, they believe in Global Social, a new cosmopolitan and social setting where menus focus on healthy and carefully sourced produce and every visit is a social experience. The culinary team works with carefully selected farmers and manufacturers to source the very best ingredients from the region. Their goal is to showcase the quality and diversity of these foods, and the wonderful people who raise, grow and produce them.

For a stylish dining destination like Chival to take such pride in what they’re plating up is definitely a plus. For those looking to fuel up on nutritional feasts full of goodness, this place has it all.

Bright and breezy by day, Chival’s design lends itself to casual social gathering. Mornings are easy with the deep aroma of freshly ground coffee beans and baked pastries filling the air. A relaxing place to enjoy a late breakfast, light snack and lunch, we take a seat around 1pm when there’s a nice, steady crowd filling up the venue.

There’s a special lunch menu that is available from 12pm to 4pm. What do we love about it the most?

Well, it includes ALL the best breakfast items like Gluten Free Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Acai Bowl and others. So, if you’re anything like us and prefer your breakfast meal at a more convenient hour of the day, Chival understands and has got your back on this one. For those looking to devour something a little heartier, there’s everything from pizza to pasta, sharing plates, sandwiches, and a very delicious “From The Grill” section too.

Although there are about fourteen things that we would love to order and eat all at once, we take a minute and, for once, don’t eat with our eyes.

The Tuna Poke Salad grabs our attention; sushi rice, tuna, sesame, soy, spring onions, avocado, cucumber, edamame and wasabi – it sounds like

just the healthy pick-me-up we need. Firstly, the portion size is SUPER generous. A bright large bowl packed with all the ingredients neatly divided up is presented and we can’t wait to get stuck in. It’s the freshness of the tuna chunks and the perfect combination of flavours that makes us fall head over heels for this dish. Pro Tip: mix all of it up and enjoy the varied textures in one bite. Definitely our new favourite salad on the menu!

Being amateur Burrata fiends, we’re always on the prowl for the best of the cheese in town. At Chival, the Burrata Verde is a complete show-stealer.

Presented with a subtle mint and peas puree, avocado, edamame, and lime dressing, it’s a literal explosion of tangy meets creamy. We practically inhale it in minutes and make a mental note to order it on our next visit too.

The famous Kunafa Cheesecake with apricot, cream cheese, and vanilla is a game changer. For anyone who isn’t a huge kunafa fan on a normal day, this is definitely a lovely and light twist on the popular dessert. If you want to shake things up, there’s a range of fresh juices and smoothies to quench your thirst and cravings (we’re talking Peanuts & Banana).

Chival seems to have nailed something that a lot of international eateries in hotels struggle with – it has created a harmonious environment where work, play, leisure and pleasure can all come together for different reasons and leave equally satisfied, because the food and the service remains consistently trustworthy. The brainchild of self-proclaimed gypsy chef, David Myers, Bleu Blanc is a restaurant where concept and execution meets in the middle, seamlessly. Serving up food inspired by Southern France, through his eyes and palate, Chef David Myers has clearly thought of it all – all the way from the restaurant’s very welcoming and now iconic blue-door entrance, to the dining room-style seating that you could easily find in a traditional French countryside home. Of course, the food is the real showstopper.

We arrive at the blue doors and enter to find a small cove with a table and two chairs against the backdrop of a tall wall adorned in plants and cradled by a ladder – it resembles an old-school pantry and we’re already impressed by the quaint touch. Up in the elevator you go and the doors open to the restaurant floor.

Wow. Charming is an understatement; mood lighting gives this venue warmth with candles and elegant chandeliers cleverly placed to set an intimate feel, whilst mirrors and other kitsch meets bohemian décor really elevates Bleu Blanc from your average 5-star eatery to one that is more sophisticated yet laid back. It’s obvious from the crowd that many are couples, groups of friends or business colleagues catching up after work.

Everyone is comfortable and the casual, lounge-esque vibes help us sink into our cushy chairs.

We came hungry and we were ready. Having perused the menu online before we arrived, there were a few dishes that had caught our eye. To begin with, we go for a couple of starters: Buttermilk Snap Pea Salad and Basil Pesto Ravioli alongside some vegetables: Roasted Cauliflower and the Sweet Potato.

Presentation is lovely – not too intricate, which gives the dishes their hearty allure, but definitely pretty enough for the ‘gram!

Though we’re literally blown away by how each item retains its own punchy flavours, it’s the ricotta in the snap pea salad that gives it a crisp, fresh kick whilst the salted plum crème fraiche complements the soft sweet potato very elegantly on the taste buds.

The focal point of the restaurant and its menu is the wood-fired grill, representing the fire that often is reminiscent of the heart of a French farmhouse - a source of warmth that brings loved ones together. The staff raved about it and so we went for the Charred King Prawns, the Sea Bass and the one meat dish that we just can’t keep away from: Boneless Short Rib. All were generous but not copious portion sizes – just perfect for two people to share.

This allowed us to order a few varied items and satisfy all our different cravings!

The prawns were gorgeously smoked yet still kept a nice juiciness, especially with the chilli herb oil adding flavour. Highly recommended! The Sea Bass is everything we wanted it to be – a

reliably tasty white fish accompanied by garlic chives, dashi butter and jalapenos – exquisite – especially for any pescatarians out there. Carnivorous guests, take a breath, because the short ribs are some of the best we’ve had in the entire country. Majestically tender with a charring that tastes smoky and crisp on the outside but leaves the meat fall-off-the-fork delicious on the inside. Add to all of this a side of Mac & Cheese and Asparagus, and you have yourself a filling meal made up of the best, quality-sourced ingredients.

There are also a host of steaks, raw dishes and snacks like foie gras and wagyu tartare on the a la carte menu. The refined bar is a meeting point that invites guests to socialise and enjoy an aperitif, accompanied by eclectic beats. The cocktail menu showcases elegantly handcrafted cocktails conceived by renowned mixologist Sam Ross. With a heavy focus on their liquid blends, anyone with a thirst for a decent glass of grape is well catered for.

Dessert is quite literally the icing on the cake, and as we mentioned before, we didn’t come to play so we ordered everything we liked the sound of. Out came Vanilla Pot De Crème (salted caramel fans will love this), Chocolate Baked Ganache (the macadamia ice cream is off the chain), and the Pit Roasted Pineapple (think plantain but made with pineapple – it’s a little too sweet and smoky for our liking but the savarin cake is a redeemer).

Finishing off with a cup of green tea seems like a fitting end to a meal that aims to be recreated in the style of being served at a French country home. One particular waiter by the name of Alfonso made our evening extra special by showing dedicated attention to our culinary and social requests – he showed the same level of care to the tables around us as well.

This was, hands down, one of the best dinners we’ve had in Dubai – not just recently, but ever. It’s time for your initiation into the Bleu Blanc fan club – go and begin your journey at those rustic blue doors and who knows, you might just find your new favourite restaurant in Dubai. ✤

ead over to Miss Lily’s on a Tuesday night and take a seat for a trip down memory lane.

Kicking it all the way back to the early 90s when the Wayans brothers reigned supreme with their funky fresh comedy sketch In Living Colour, Miss Lily’s triggers all the nostalgic feels and reminders of a time before mobile phones and social media when music brought people together for a good time. In Living Colour reminisces back to when cross colours and starter jackets were fashion; we’re talking about the era of Janet Jackson, Shabba Ranks, and TLC to name but a few of the music icons that dominated every house party playlist.

As we get comfy, ready to order the Rundown Menu (more on that in a second), resident DJ Mehdi Le Hash gets straight down to business with old-school tracks by every throwback artist we wish would make a comeback, including the likes of Cameo, Ashanti, Busta Rhymes, and some we’d completely forgotten about – Naughty by Nature, Kriss Kross, Ja Rule, Lloyd and so many more that had us revisit old memories and create a new playlist in our “notes” as the night unfolded.

Returning to the era of colour also comes with true Caribbean flavour. As Tuesday evening begins to rewind into the dusty and dreamy back catalogue of some of our music faves, the kitchen also steps up with their Rundown Menu, highlighting an array of indulgent traditional Caribbean plates and showcasing the fiery tastes of all things Jerk. Treat yourself for just AED180 to classic recipes from the yard and unmatched grill techniques in the city throughout this extensive dinner. Start with Callaloo and Cheese Stuffed Charred Baby Peppers and Jerk Honey coated Chicken Wings. The latter will require you to break all the rules and really get stuck in – is there even another way to eat those good, tasty chicken wings? Nope.

Mains offers five courses and the standouts come in the form of the juicy Jerk Lamb Chop with a side of steamed cabbage – the flavours are p.o.p.p.i.n.g and everyone at the table agrees that it’s acceptable to lick your fingers after this top-notch carnivorous delight. The Jerk Prawn is also a showstopper with its tangy kick from the lime and cilantro while the Jerk Scotch Bonnet Charred Rib Eye is a palate awakening thanks to a beautiful mix of chilli and mango chutney – genius. The Jerk Barbeque Lamb Ribs are a little more difficult to tackle with more fat than meat making an appearance – after a few tries to tear away, the majority of us give up. The Pineapple Honey Grilled King Fish redeems with its subtle yet memorable flavours. A chef’s selection of 84

dessert follows for those who still have room. We would highly recommend ordering a side of the famous plantain for Miss Lily’s still remains the best place in Dubai for this much-loved Jamaican delicacy – in our humble and hungry opinion.

Drinks are as always at the ready with so much great choice to quench your thirst. Staff are the friendliest and most welcoming group of individuals who work in perfect cohesion to make sure that it’s nothing but good vibes only throughout the venue.

Taking the party into the main area, we recall Miss Lily’s ethos: to remind the city why they fell in love with hip hop, R&B and dancehall and of course – good food – by taking it back to where it all began. Tuesday night is the best example of this; it pays homage to the catalyst of a culture that started in the streets and adapted into today’s creative-centric lifestyle.

f it wasn’t for La Mer, there wouldn’t be much reason to trek to this particular side of Jumeirah – a side that pretty much feels like you’re on the outer layers of Port Rashid. But with the addition of Kulture House, a compartmentalised café, florist and boutique (with conscious, fair trade fashion) the incentive to set up camp for several hours is strong.

If we were to characterise the look of Kulture House (which is in fact a sprawling bungalow) we would define it as Morocco and Sweden’s firstborn child. There’s a slew of mosaic tiling, bags of colour and clean lines in the furniture. Between cosy tables for two and railway sleeper tables, it’s an accommodating space for intimate catch ups or bigger rendezvous’.

The café menu is in keeping with the eclectic space, in that there are items that satisfy your everyday cravings (Avocado on Toast) and items that stir curiosity (Beetroot Falafel).

We started off with the Herb Omelette which isn’t as provincial as its title suggests. In fact, it’s got a sophisticated brie filling with (yes) herbs and potato chips tucked into the medium-cooked eggs –that’s how we like it. Obviously, the best bites are where the brie is fully loaded and the potato chips are an endearing touch texture wise. The Summer Burrata salad saw a long plate of fried corn, pumpkin puree with balsamic glaze hugging a perfect sphere of burrata cheese. We wouldn’t have paired any of these ingredients together ourselves but a forkful of all the layers proved deliciously unexpected.

Moving onto the mains, we smashed the Kulture Burger and Crispy Chicken Burger like we were at a drive through. We’d rate the angus beef patty so much so, that it needs to be on a top burger destination in Dubai list – while the chicken was so pure white, it resembled Crest toothpaste. And like with any memorable eatery, both burgers were doused in special sauce. We don’t even want to know what it is, we’ll just keep coming back for it. All the while we dunked our herby French fries in the blue cheese sauce and nibbled on sticks of Fried Corn Sticks (spicy aioli and feta cheese) which were so moreish we wanted the whole cob.

When our waiter, Ravinder, cleared our plates, he suggested we have his “best seller” for dessert: Cardamom Spice Cake with cream cheese sauce (…we know) and then, because we’re gluttons, we also got the Persian Nights Rice Pudding, consisting of saffron infused rice topped with pistachio brittle and date sauce. The former is the ultimate cheat day cake, thanks in large part to the cream cheese sauce which is as indulgent as it sounds, while the latter will sit perfectly for anyone who loves exotic and powered up ingredients. In all, the menu packs

And finally, if there’s one thing that will get us back to Kulture House besides the high-quality comfort food, it’s the free valet parking. It will mean everything to you on a hot summer’s day… ✤

GREEK CHIC

Situated along the meandering waterways at Madinat Jumeriah is a new Greek restaurant from the team behind The Meat Co and Bentley’s Kitchen. With the demand for Greek cuisine showing absolutely no signs of slowing down in Dubai, it was only a matter of time before the arrival of a restaurant such as Taverna Greek Kitchen. FACT’s David Tapley dines at the new venue where keeping things authentic and true their roots is at the core of the food philosophy. fact magazine

assing the turquoise waters dotted with traditional wooden abra boats, we soon find ourselves at the restaurant inside a building topped with traditional Islamic wind towers and marked by a small and unassuming entranceway. Leaving behind the Arabic architecture of the exterior, we enter into a wholly traditional taverna, as if crossing the threshold of the restaurant had teleported us to a mountainous village overlooking the Aegean coast. The feeling is immediately homely thanks to a combination of whitewashed walls, tiled floors, simple wooden furnishings and hospitable staff.

We firstly notice the crockery which has been cleverly branded with the Taverna logo. Across the room, fresh fish lie on a bed of ice and in an elemental contrast, flames dart in the warm fires of the large open kitchen. Much like the atmosphere of the dining room, Taverna’s menu boasts a rustic charm that is only heightened by the team on the restaurant floor, with many of the staff hailing from Greece these are guys you should consult for recommendations on the best dishes.

Any meal at Taverna begins with a tray of cold appetisers that are presented to the table upon a glittering silver tray. Each dish is thoroughly explained before guests are invited to make a selection. We cannot resist the tzatziki (AED25) a cool mixture of Greek yoghurt, cucumber and garlic that works so well slathered upon a piece of warm pita bread. The taramasalata (AED25), a fish paste mixed with cold pressed olive oil and salmon roe is also enjoyable but it’s the ksidato octopus (AED35) that has us scraping the plate clean, thanks to the preparation technique which sees the mollusk slowly braised before being pickled in vinegar.

The appetisers bring an unexpected modernity to proceedings as we see traditional dishes re-interpreted to varying degrees of success. A traditional spinach pie, aka Spanakopita, is transformed into an interesting salad, while the squid ink soup makes for a visual treat. Textures come into play with the tuna carpaccio (AED60) which presents the thinly sliced fish with rosemary croutons and dollops of lemon marmalade, before Greek coffee is grated on top as if it were pepper. The resulting plate has a lot going on but somehow the ingredients harmonise and work in unison to create something special.

The kadaifi prawns (AED60) pose an interesting plate to diners with the filo wrapped seafood served alongside almonds, sesame and a fresh seaweed salad, which is unfortunately overpowered by a strawberry sauce that is a touch too sweet.

Despite being a Greek restaurant you won’t find any plate smashing or Zorba dancing at Greek Taverna although theatrics certainly come into play with the flaming cheese saganaki (AED58). A dish where pan-fried Greek Kefaltyri cheese is soaked in ouzo and set alight at the table to infuse the aniseed flavours into the dairy which is then served with a sweet tomato jam that brings a nice sense of balance to the plate.

Being of Greek heritage we cannot resist the moussaka (AED110) which is one of Greece’s most recognisable (and popular) dishes.

Presented in a large ramekin, the simplicity of the presentation contradicts the true nature of the dish which boasts a wellseasoned beef mince, layers of thinly sliced aubergine and a

béchamel sauce that is soufflé light and shows how well the classic dishes are treated at this particular Greek Taverna. A range of wood fired grills and a seafood selection round out the main course options.

While we have struggled with desserts at some of the other Greek spots around town, Taverna appears to have turned the tide when it comes to the traditional doughnuts known as loukoumades (AED38). Sixteen sweet dough balls sit in a deep dish, slathered in thyme, honey and a delightful walnut crumble that are nowhere near as heavy as they appear. Additionally, a Greek yoghurt pavlova (AED38) is undeniably light and the use of yoghurt to balance a notoriously sweet dish is a smart move. You could easily imagine this is what eating a cloud would be like.

With the likes of Gaia, Ena, Opa, Opsu and Ammos all opening their doors in the past 12 months, it would appear that Dubai’s appetite is well and truly enamoured with all things Greek chic.

This trend shows no signs of subsiding, yet Taverna Greek has proved a successful entry into the Mediterranean marketplace and one that has managed to stand out from the crowd in the relatively short time since opening. The Taverna experience is casual, rustic and a whole lot of fun and with Greek language tapes playing in the bathrooms, it’s highly likely you’ll pick up a phrase or two to try out on your next Aegean adventure. ✤

With venues located at The Address Montgomerie Dubai, and The Address Boulevard, Downtown, the luxury ladies and gents’ salon has garnered quite the following from socialites to young professionals, housewives and business people, all wanting that bespoke and personalised attention that you so often crave when visiting a beauty salon. Thankfully, for the Dubai’s “it” crowd, José Eber Laloge has added one more location for you to enjoy their services – the super stylish Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai.

Not only is the venue a sprawling definition of elegance and comfort, the staff are also incredibly attentive and friendly. With no expense spared at what is now the brand’s largest venue to date, the generously spaced 1,800 sq ft. beauty and grooming zone mixes uber-modern décor with sleek wooden finishes, giving an updated twist on its trademark opulent interior. An architects’ dream, the super chic Mani/Pedi stations, complete with soft white leather high-back seats are cocooned within a private cabin, more in-line with a first-class flying experience than a traditional salon setting.

As now expected from Laloge’s high-profile clientele, the menu boasts the crème de la crème of beauty services, including the Caviar Hair Treatment, 24k Gold and Diamond Facials and Luxury Spa Mani/Pedi’s, so you can enjoy the A-list treatment at an affordable price. Customers are given the full celebrity treatment, with a private VIP ladies room available for clients who enjoy some extra privacy with their pampering.

Of course, with exceptional haircare at its core, all stylists are expertly trained in the latest styling techniques and upcoming trends, with regular visiting celebrity stylists. Trusted by the who’s who of Dubai’s elite, Laloge has built a highly praised reputation for offering unparalleled service with all the five-star trimmings.

And now, after what I can only describe as the most expert haircut of my adult life (no exaggeration), I can vouch for this.

I’m met with warm smiles on arrival. Making it clear that time is of the essence, both my hairdresser Kal and the lovely lady washing my hair are on high alert – they line up all the tools needed for their craft and they do it in perfect synergy. I have 45 minutes (mostly down to my own lack of planning) but I’m determined to see if a wash, cut and blow dry is possible. Kal reassures me that being meticulous is essential and that he’s ready for the challenge. My hair is washed with beautiful products and a little massage is thrown in for good measure too – regardless of the time constraints, I’m very relaxed.

Next, over to the chair and I explain to Kal that I’d like a couple of inches off the length, some fresh layers in the front and a nice trim of the side fringe. No pressure, but I’d also like a bouncy blow dry with loose curls. It seems a little ambitious for half an hour

• BEAUTY FOCUS but Kal is like a machine – comfortable with his tools, thorough with his technique (he asks me to stand a couple of times to check that the length and style of the cut is up to scratch) and he’s very accommodating too. Small talk here and there with utter concentration on the task in front of him – a.k.a. my lackluster hair that he was adamant to revive.

In no time, literally 15 minutes, the cut is done. The hair is swept away and the hair dryer is on. At this moment in time, I’m already impressed. My hair feels lighter, like I can carry myself around more gracefully. Kal is a master with wand/styling brush, dropping in tight curls exactly where I wanted them. Later, he opens up the curls with a smooth serum to give a natural bouncy effect and wavy curls. A little bit of volume is added and voila – 45 minutes and I’m so fresh, so clean!

For someone who hasn’t had a haircut in over a year, Laloge was a revelation. Kal made me believe in good hairdressers again – and especially that there are those in beauty salons who actually listen to what you want, putting the customer’s needs first. The entire experience was professional, calm and very, very sophisticated.

There was no pretentious vibe as I had expected, instead the staff are sincere and the best at their craft. You’re made to feel like the only person there – I expect this is the celebrity factor. It works.

Anyone looking to up their haircare game should definitely give Laloge a chance to do what it does best and blow you away! ✤
