Hello, Eve… EVE, THE INIMITABLE ROOFTOP LOUNGE SERVING A DIVERSE BLEND OF CULTIVATED COCKTAILS AND COSMOPOLITAN BITES IS NOW OPEN AT THE HYATT REGENCY DUBAI CREEK HEIGHTS.

IN A SETTING WHERE CLASSIC opulence and contemporary elegance combine to offer unrivalled views of the city, Eve is ready to shake up the social scene in Dubai. Sitting atop the Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights hotel, on the 34th floor, is a vision of ostentatious vibrancy that combines contemporary lavishness with classic splendour. It is a world of imagination, myth, and magic where anything is possible. Up to 169 guests can revel in the enticing atmospheres of three remarkable areas, each possessing its own distinct aura, yet all blending seamlessly into one another. With indoor and outdoor options, and even a hidden playroom, there is somewhere to suit everyone. The décor is always elegant but never understated. A glamourous hostess ushers guests into a main lounge of emerald greens, deep purples, canary yellows, and the glittering golds of refined brass fittings. Magnificent palatial chandeliers hang like the diamond necklaces Eve drapes from her neck, while the main bar features a majestic handmade mosaic, composed of crushed fragments of wood, metal, and marble to form a mid-century Art Deco-inspired pattern. Luxury meets comfort in the living room where padded walls and a fireplace provide a soothing ambience. Mirrored ceilings and antique brass mirrors form the illusory effect that someone is always watching, and guests often claim to have caught Eve’s 8

fact magazine

eye in one of the reflections. Vivid prints and patterns depicting exotic serpents, fierce Siberian beasts, and creatures of the Orient reflect the imagery that paints the rich tapestry of Eve’s life. Now you need to ask yourself, are you ready to be captivated by the opulence, elegance, and enchantment of Eve? Eve’s lust for travel is matched only by her appetite for delicious cosmopolitan bites and exotic liquid treasures. Whether it’s a tapas recipe she coaxed from a fisherman in the village of Cadaqués, Catalonia, or a cocktail mixture she borrowed from a saxophone-touting mixologist in New Orleans, wherever Eve goes, she collects a keepsake. The carefully crafted menu, shaped by her globetrotting escapades, is the epitome of the flavours that fuel Eve’s playful and curious spirit. She’s not afraid to add a modern twist to a traditional taste. From classic Bloody Marys and vintage Martinis to her enviable grape collection, Eve’s drink selection reflects her personality – she’s an original shaped by the classics, a trendsetter who believes in honouring tradition. ✤

With contemporary chic interiors and holistic vibes, Maxzi’s new outlet serves organic, freshly brewed coffee, freshly baked breakfast treats, Real Wagyu beef sandwiches, nutritious soups and mains. Following a simple philosophy of only the best being good enough, all items are made fresh daily and are made with only the cleanest of ingredients. We see ourselves as educators, caretakers and match makers; through the sharing of our food knowledge and passion, sourcing ethical products to be made readily available and match to the liking of the taste of our community.” said Helene, conceptualiser and founder of Maxzi, The Good Food Shop. “ As a café and clean food grocer concept, we pride ourselves in our policy of using meats that are free from fillers, preservatives and food colorings. With the rise in food-on-the-go, preservatives and antibiotics being added to meats, in specific, is common. The idea is to spring free from these harmful ingredients that make it tough for most people to keep track of health, despite having home-made food. An idea tempting to all mothers looking for clean food to their kids, the fresh produce 14

With ethical animal welfare standards, artisanal charcuterie all chosen with deliciousness and nutrition, Maxzi is set to be the bridge for honest, good food and smart choices for health while fostering a strong bond with the community. Following their basic message of “Only the best being good enough”, with their 20+ years of experience in food, Maxzi is not a gourmet store but rather a local market with carefully selected produce of great food for a thriving community, giving piece of mind on what you are eating. ✤

IT’S JUST AN

ILLUSION

WE’VE PICKED ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING OPENINGS TO HAPPEN IN DUBAI, IN THE SAME MONTH AS FACT’S 1ST ANNIVERSARY. WELCOME TO THE MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS…

T

he Museum of Illusions, the world’s fastest growing museum chain, has officially opened its doors at the heart of the emirate’s signature Al Seef by Meraas development near the iconic Dubai Creek. Boasting the largest collection of optical illusions in any of the Museum of Illusions’ worldwide portfolio, the Dubai location is set to become a flagship attraction in the heritage and cultural Al Seef development. Dr Mohammed Al Wahaibi, Owner, Museum of Illusions Dubai, said: “Museum of Illusions Dubai brings together the respective fields of science, mathematics, biology and psychology to create a truly sensory experience that defies logic. “Visitors can learn a lot about vision, perception, the human brain and science through bespoke exhibits that highlight how and why our eyes see things that our brain does not understand,” he continued. “Our exhibits are mostly reinvented classical illusions that have been carefully selected to ensure the widest possible appeal to the city’s uniquely cosmopolitan residents and international tourists. In that sense, our exhibits rekindle childhood memories among adults and bestow a sense of wonder in children,” he said. “The museum is an interactive and visual concept unlike anything else in Dubai that is perfect for all ages to enjoy.” Counting 80-plus exhibits of all shapes and sizes, Museum of Illusions Dubai has classified its unique visual and sensory experiences into three categories: Master Illusions, Grand Illusions and Optical Illusions. A key highlight, and one, which has captured the imagination of visitors to its existing museums, will be the Clone, which allows you to sit at the table beneath a chandelier with five clones of yourself. The Infinity Room will have you walking in circles as you try and navigate through infinite corridors around an endless space. The Dubai venue will also feature The Vortex Tunnel, a rotating cylinder that tricks the brain into thinking the ground under their feet is shifting, as well as the Ames Room, where guests shrink or grow depending on their position in the exhibit. Other exhibits include a collage of indented Albert Einstein heads, called Hollow Faces, that stalks visitors with their strangely moving gazes; the Chair Illusion, which explores perception and size using the most common of everyday objects; captivating holograms; and Head on a Platter. With a dedicated playroom full of didactic games and puzzles for younger visitors, Museum of Illusions’ also features a number of fullsize illusions in dedicated spaces, including The Infinity Room, The Tilted Room, The Rotated Room and The Colour Room. 36

This 18th century palazzo boasts some of the most secluded grounds and gardens in the region. It comes as no surprise that this boutique hotel hosts many repeat guests with its super elegant yet understated vibe and you can see how it feels like a home away from home - totally private and relaxing. The hotel is decorated in muted tones with thoughtful accents such as antique mirrors, Puglian ceramics and large art deco chandeliers. There is a beautiful sitting room where guests can play chess or enjoy a drink. We are shown the large kitchen where you are welcome to help yourself to homemade snacks that are changed up daily as well as juices and soft drinks. Off the kitchen is the beautiful courtyard where breakfast is served daily surrounded by olive trees, and stone staircases. We continue the tour off the side of the courtyard to find a huge garden with a swimming pool. You’ll find everything from pine trees to white roses and loads of cactus, which Puglia is known for. How this space is even possible is a total surprise and it’s not what you’d expect after entering the small street front entrance. The garden leads onto the pool area which is simply stunning with a pergola at the end that is decorated in art deco furniture in bold colours. Don Tuto has only six rooms which adds to the boutique feel of the property and makes it feel exclusive and peaceful. It’s been so thoughtfully decorated and the building itself adds so much to the ambience with its stone ceilings, quiet corners, tranquil garden areas, small alcoves and rooftop terraces. URBAN POETRY

Graffiti inspired art pieces by London Pride and Ron English Come to the DIFC’s Opera Gallery in a beautiful new exhibition… fact magazine

49

• ARTS SPOTLIGHT

T

o help the Opera Gallery Dubai continue to celebrate their major 10year milestone, the art hub brings to Dubai another standout exhibition merging culture and the arts into a single sight of unique and quirky pieces. Expect a hint of the city’s graffiti-inspired artwork in the four walls of the gallery, for Urban Poetry Exhibition. Street art has seen a tremendous growth in the region, with works from Blek le Rat, London Police and Ron English, to name but a few, scattered around the walls of City Walk, La Mer and Satwa, which has helped generate attention and positive opinions at the thought of graffitiinspired artwork in the region. The oldest known drawing to mankind was executed about 40,000 years ago. It depicts an animal, and was painted inside a cave, arguably the first ever piece of art and street art created. Sylvain Gaillard, Director of Opera Gallery Dubai, explains: “The desire to paint in public locations has never faded… deeply embedded within our soul and genetic heritage. The 80s was the decade that established street art, particularly in New York City,” he continues. “Back then, a young generation of artists found that the best way to get their voices heard was to take their message to the streets or the subway. At the very core, the goal of these artists was to create something that will receive a reaction from as many people as possible, rather than what is often wrongfully perceived as a desire to degrade or appropriate a public location.” Some of the first famous faces of street-art are back and better than ever in this revamped exhibition which heroes the free-spirited voice. With Dubai ranking amongst the top countries in the world when it comes to sanctioning street art, Opera Gallery’s exhibition Urban Poetry, helps bring back the need for personal opinion and allows expression to become rediscovered in the region. The pieces on display merge abstract thinking, simplistic stereotypes and dark, disturbing styles to create unique and individual ways of thinking; all coming together in a single exhibition of individuality. With displaying artists inspired by the likes of Banksy and Jean-Michel Basquiat, each piece represents a unique way of thinking about the world and the society that was lived through. Whether the mockery of Ronald McDonald and the demanding fast-food centered society that we live in, by Ron ENGLISH; the mingling of travel and art from the work of The London Police, international sensations; or the typical graffiti style brought to the exhibition from Speedy 50

Graphito; each piece is modern, unique and up-to-date with today’s trends. This exhibition, more so than ever, focuses on the community feeling of the art culture. Without the generation of public opinion, street-art and graffiti would have died out years ago. The pivotal moment came for this art culture when pioneers were called into galleries and asked to produce studio work. With the movement formally referred to by definition as “unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues,” the 21st century has transformed this way of thinking into clean works on canvas, growing to become loved by collectors and institutions alike. ✤

BIG SCREEN First Man WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

A riveting look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, the film follows the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon. Focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969, the film delves deeper into the event that changed the world.

DIRECTOR: Damien Chazelle CAST: Ryan Gosling, Jason Clarke, Claire Fox

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

First Man offers a brand new take on the most defining moment for America. Damien Chazelle’s spectacular and enthralling drama offers an intelligent treatment of the revolutionary event. For a story that’s been told so many times before, Chazelle’s narrative is as gritty as ever and is entrenched in realism. Based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film explores the sacrifices and the cost on Armstrong and the nation of one of the most dangerous missions in history. The visceral, first-person account restricts the action almost entirely to the point of view of the astronauts, giving you a never before seen glimpse into everything the men experience. From the volatile opening sequence to the shards of glass looming up out of cramped windows, this is as real as it gets. Redefining what space travel is, First Man takes your imagination for a ride while capturing what the stakes were. And they were pretty high.

ROCK

Trench

By Twenty One Pilots

Veering in opposite directions, the band’s upcoming fifth LP is a concept album that aims to tell a number of stories. Following their Grammy-winning 2015 album, Blurryface, this newest release takes their musical genius to a whole new level. Featuring a distorted bass guitar, crisp drumming and dark washes of synth, Jumpsuit is a surprising departure from their usual upbeat pop sound. But as the atmospheric single goes into the bridge, there is a change of pace followed by a softer sound, which might be more familiar to long-time fans. A mesmerising combination of different kinds of mediums, the album brings together various characters, themes and stories like never before. Featuring a lighter, more upbeat vibe, Nico and the Niners alternates between rapping and singing along with rippling synths, programmed kick-drums and down-pitched vocals. The track continues the reggae theme of some of their previous songs with clear and expressive vocals, making it another compelling single from the band. Following a brand new theme and concept, Trench showcases Twenty One Pilots in a whole new light - and we’re enjoying it.

Wax

By KT Tunstall Evoking the elements of spirit, body and mind, KT Tunstall’s second offering of her KIN trilogy is finally here and we have a lot of feelings! Focusing on the body and our complex relationship with physicality, Wax is all about human-ness, which we often dismiss as flaws. Wanting to escape the madness of the world, bad relationships and wanting to start over, River talks about emancipation through nature. Putting KT’s stunning vocals centre stage, the inspirational, emotionally charged song builds with rocking, rhythmic guitar textures and an infectious chorus. Powerfully delivering on the concept of the album, the subject matter beautifully touches on salvation, sin and being saved. Written by KT herself and Martin Terefe, the song represents the grit, dirt and physicality of the overall album. An electric guitar record about the physical and the obstacles of that, the record is heartfelt and relatable and is packed with uplifting energy.

The land of glamour and style, New York City is the fashion haven Bill Cunningham had always dreamt of. Growing up in an Irish suburb of Boston, spending his evenings after school in the city’s chicest boutiques and secretly dressing up in his sister’s clothes. Without any support from his family, he decided to drop out of Harvard and fight tooth-and-nail to pursue his one true love - fashion. A true original, the book is great inspiration for following your dreams and passion.

CITY RIDES •

t’s not everyday that you get to experience the thrill of a sports car, and especially one that is created by automotive heavyweight Jaguar. The Jaguar F-Type Coupé is effortless performance and agile handling all in one. If there’s one thing we learned from test driving the Jaguar F-Type Coupé, it’s that even for those who aren’t major car enthusiasts, this vehicle was pure temptation. A stunner in every sense, pulling up in the Jaguar F-Type Coupé is the same feeling as turning towards the business class cabin on a flight – excitement in the knowledge that you’re about to be treated to an exclusive experience that very few have access to. The striking ultra blue bodywork is slick enough to awe passers-by, but does the dynamic package underneath all the sleek match up to entice a purchase? The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine shows off some real power by hitting 0-100 km/h in a mere 5.7 seconds. We’re talking an easy breezy drive down from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, our record time was 1 hour and 10 minutes – that’s from the heart of Business Bay all the way to Al Reem Island (all within speed limit, of course) – pretty impressive, right? The exhaust makes the sports car far more audible than other vehicles in the same range, yet a little bit more restrained, as you’d expect from the four-pot. So, if you have early starts and easily irritated neighbours then this is definitely the F-Type version for you. A single tailpipe, rather than several, visually marks the 2.0 and the F-Type is good to go. It drives the rear wheels only, and through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. While a light, strippedout, manual variant sounds like the kind of car that people would love, it also sounds like one nobody would fork out for and buy. F-Type’s technical excellence gives it a breadth of capabilities to suit the demands of every driver and every road. The car’s dynamism feels effortless thanks to the advanced driving technologies. To give tighter turning and reduce understeer, Torque Vectoring provides controlled independent braking of the inside front and rear wheels during cornering. The Electronic Active Differential can take this one step further, working with the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics system to precisely manage torque delivery to each of the rear wheels. And to deliver optimum comfort and control, Adaptive Dynamics analyses the road and your driving style then modifies F-Type’s response – this comes in handy especially when changing lanes. On the other hand, the electric power steering remains smooth and slick, accurate and responsive. The car is agile and makes for precision handling thanks to the finely tuned double wishbone suspension system, even in the most unpredictable conditions. Hitting the highways in the UAE is an absolute pleasure – you’ll feel in complete control and your driving experience is further enhanced in sport mode. The Rear Wheel Drive is great fun in the dry heat, as the roads are ready to handle the fourfact magazine

• CITY RIDES cylinder roar output. Passive Suspension means that movement of the car is determined entirely by the road surface and this is where the sporty elements of the Jaguar F-Type Coupé really shine. We’re lucky to have (albeit constant lane works) even roads here in the UAE, so it never becomes uncomfortable driving this vehicle even though you’re always aware of the undulations as the wheels pass over them. Put the car in sports mode and the pedal to the metal – you’ve got yourself a smooth surfer. The F-Type is sculpted by the wind itself, formed by Jaguar’s state of the art Computational Fluid Dynamics design methods. Aerodynamic performance is seamlessly integrated into the body for low levels of lift and excellent stability at high speed. And whatever speed you’re moving, F Type’s new adaptive LED headlights will adjust their beam to guarantee the best possible illumination. Even at night, F Type stands out. Its new LED headlights featuring LED ‘J’ blade Daytime Running Lights are as powerful as they look. These elegant headlights adapt the width and depth of their beam to your speed and offer a quality of light closer to daylight. You always have the best possible illumination whatever your surroundings, helping your eyes distinguish objects more easily and reducing fatigue. F-Type’s interior conveys a combination of functional ergonomics with sporting style through its precisely considered cockpit design, simple controls and clear instrumentation. Instruments are simple, clear and easy to read featuring two large analogue dials – essential in a sports car. The 3 spoke design of the steering wheel incorporates key functions for ease of control. On Automatic models, paddles mounted behind the steering wheel allow you to select gears sequentially with your fingertips without taking your hands from the wheel. And if you’re one for syncing contacts and playlists, the F-Type’s driver-oriented controls are an opportunity for individual expression. The Touch Pro infotainment system gives you direct control over navigation, music, phone, climate and many additional driver support systems including parking aids and Configurable Dynamic Mode. If we had to be direct, this car is MADE for the CEO playboy, the bachelor out having fun, and anyone who wants a weekend ride to impress. Everyday errands and trips to the grocery store are probably not on the agenda. However, cruising across long distances is definitely a joy. When all is said and done, the Jaguar F-Type Coupé is a sophisticated choice for a sports car with power and precision – and if you can afford it, it’s yours for the taking. ✤ 68

FRESH AND FABULOUS There are few trendy spots in town that live up to their reputation of providing a casual atmosphere with the fresh, healthy food to match. afé culture has become synonymous with good coffee and cool surroundings, but nowadays, a venue needs to really up its food game if it wants to strike a chord with avid epicureans and even food novices looking to excite their palate. One such place that really stood out for us this month is market 24 at in Hyatt Regency Dubai Creek Heights. More than just a casual café, you’ll get wholesome ingredients and Asian comfort food with a rustic touch. Its fun surroundings are elevated through warm wooden furnishings, natural daylight, a fullon food truck-style van at the entrance, and an all-round good vibes feel from the honest-to-earth food and the personable service by the staff. On our lunch visit, the venue is bursting with energy. We see groups of friends chilliong out with their choice of beverage, creatives pondering over their laptops and sharing ideas, and more business-clad individuals enjoying a dynamic lunch meeting. We perch on a communal-style table where the light pours in through large windows, and a menu appears immediately before us – three, in fact – drinks, sushi and international favourites. There’s plenty of variety to satiate every palate, and to accommodate a wide range of dietary needs. We’re tempted to order from the “Slurp Away” which boasts Miso Soup and Chicken Won ton Soup. Alas, our newly found healthy lifestyle steers us towards the hearty-sounding salads. The Market 24 Salad catches our attention; with kale, orange, quinoa, peanuts, avocado, radish and papaya dressing, it’s all the flavours we’re craving. The slight zest of orange adds a beautiful taste to the generously-portioned salad, and for our intake of protein we opt for some grilled shrimp which is added in abundance – winner. The Avocado Salad is also another gift from the green Gods. We particulary enjoy the addition of beetroot confit and pomegranate, really taking the innovative taste test up a notch, all slathered in honey dressing. It was a burst of crisp, fresh ingredients meets “mmmh” inducing flavours – highly recommended. Market24 prides itself on the nutritious and enriching variety of food it offers and we’re happy to see this philosophy live up to the hype. From the “Sandwiches” if you’re after a filling but notso-naughty choice, go for the Short Ribs Cuban Sandwich. Made up of chipotle braised ribs, cheddar, pickled gherkin and mustard, it’s a reliably tasty pick with a dash of exotic deliciousness. After taking a good look around and examining the menu, we learn that some of the favourites here 86

include the likes of Nasi Goreng, Pad Thai, Indian curries, freshly baked pizzas and, more surprisingly, the Korean dish of Beef Bulgogi. We couldn’t pass up the chance to try the sushi and ordered a round of Spicy Tuna Rolls, stuffed with siracha, cucumber, scallions, avocado and frying fish roe. Dipped in soy sauce, every bite was exquisite. To follow, the Spider Rolls were just as impressive and will please anyone who is partial to tempura soft shell crab. Market24 is the place where you can decide to feast on sinful milkshakes and desserts or carry the baton of healthy eating with indulgent salads and goodfor-you mains – there’s room for every diner. Next to the trendy interiors that blend café, restaurant, and bakery in one, you’ve got yourself an unparalleled dining spot in the Healthcare City area. And the fact that we’re located all the way near JLT, makes craving Market24 food a real challenge! ✤

hen you enter Rüya Dubai, prepare for all your senses to be hit at once; your eyes won’t know where to look, your ears will dance at the sound of the DJ’s chilled, upbeat brunch rhythms, and you’ll smell everything from freshly-baked pide to beautiful presentations of hot and cold appetisers. And, your taste buds will be well and truly on drool mode as staff carry plates of intricatelyprepared food to lively tables packed with diners. Now, we’ve dined for brunch at Rüya Dubai before, and the food and ambience have been on point. Sadly, the service has lacked the same attention to detail so we’re hoping that it’s going to be third time’s the charm – after all, the venue prides itself on “warm Anatolian hospitality” – so we expect to experience We’re off to a good start as a friendly member of the team shows us to our table. This particular Friday is VERY busy. The venue is swarming with weekend revelers enjoying the casual yet upscale setting of the venue. The décor is a blend of modern Turkey meets elegant fairytale with a sophisticated, iconic 360-degree bar, The Mekan, which serves an enticing selection of creative signature cocktails to compliment the luscious cuisine. Cocktails include the classy Ottoman old fashion and Anatolian Fizz. A vast dining room that houses contemporary furniture and lighting elements is influenced by Turkish traditions. The concept of sharing and being sociable is perfectly fitting here. It takes a while for a waiter to come around and we’re disappointed to learn that the soft drinks package doesn’t include any mocktails – something that is a norm at other brunches. At AED299 for the soft drinks option, it’s baffling that a venue of this calibre wouldn’t offer a choice of even basic mocktails like a virgin mojito for guests who wish to opt for this deal. Still, the atmosphere around us is electric for a Friday afternoon so we won’t let this oversight get us down. On with an orange juice! The Grand Bazaar Brunch journey begins with delicious olives, mouthwatering muhammara – roasted red pepper tomato walnut dip (it might just be better than hummus!), and Isli Patlican – eggplant puree with walnuts and a plate of coated eggplant chips – they’re so good, we’re tempted to ask for more! Appetisers entail multiple dishes that showcase the start of an interactive menu, designed by Executive Chef, Colin Clague. Our dish of the day is Levrek – seabass sashimi with mustard, apple and shaved radish. The flavours are innovative and super fresh, simple with a slight zest, and we polish it off with gusto. Finn Pancar – roasted baby beetroots with goat’s cheese and corn bread – is another standout that we eagerly finish. The warm appetisers are just as appealing, and it’s the Two Cheese Pide from black sea with slow cooked egg that leaves a lasting impression. Like the meaning of 90

the restaurant name in Turkish, this pide is an absolute dream. We’re gutted that the portion is quite small with just two pieces to tear – so we plucked up the courage to ask for a second helping which was seen as a surprise and questioned by several waiters – truth is, we just loved it – slowly but surely it turned up at the table a half hour later. You have a choice of mains from five dishes. We opt for the Keskek; barley risotto with pulled lamb and spices, and the Grain Fed Rib Eye with Turkish coffee and isot rub and crispy za’atar potatoes. Both are cooked to indulgent perfection. The first is a sure fire winner for those looking to blend their love of risotto with meat – the pulled lamb is tender and melts in the mouth – not leaving you heavy afterwards. The second is a gorgeous steak that is seasoned brilliantly with the most lip-licking smoky charred taste – we’re drooling just thinking about it. Decadent desserts offer a sweet ending to the meal. It was the creamy rice pudding with berries and vanilla ice cream that stole the show. Just divine! Rüya Dubai’s vibrancy and quality of food are really the heart and soul of this unique dining experience which brings the essence of a Turkish Mayhane to Dubai. Let’s hope that as the season goes on, the service can also improve to complete what could potentially be everything you want from a Friday Brunch package. ✤

tep into Natural Elements Spa at the Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, and be prepared for the wow factor. For a hotel that has a bustling location close to the airport, the spa area is complete bliss. Sprawling out from the reception area are separate male and female changing areas as well as beautiful treatment rooms for you to unwind in. There’s a focus on earthy, natural tones and large spaces – you’ll feel enveloped in a bright and airy space, even though you’re safely tucked inside a sanctuary of complete privacy and rest. We were ushered through the lovely relaxation lounge to a changing area that is bigger than even some resort spas – we’re impressed. A friendly member of staff talks us through the consultation form after which we slip into our robe and take some time to relax in the Heat Room (ideal for getting your body prepped for your treatment) before heading to a lovely treatment room to begin a 60-minute Ayurvedic Massage. The spa is also going to introduce new Ayurvedic spa beds to enhance future therapies. Before we begin, our wonderful therapist Nana tells us that Natural Elements Spa is all about discovering holistic sensations that invigorate your body, mind and spirit. There’s an extensive menu of signature treatments for both male and female

guests including purifying body wraps, facials and full body massages. We’re comfy on the massage bed and the treatment begins. Nana starts with loosening out the head and neck area, simply with some gentle movements. Then she rubs oil directly onto the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet – it already feels like a more connective body massage and different from any other we’ve experienced before. She later tells us that the beauty of Ayurveda is that it not only treats the physical ailments like muscle tension, it also enriches the nervous system, bringing deep nourishment to all the cells and tissues as well as the mind. We feel that Nana’s movements are really helping us to connect with our own energy channels which is forcing us to let go of stress and enter a deeper realm of calmness. One thing we absolutely loved is that unlike other massages, here, the oil was poured onto different parts of the body before being thoroughly kneaded into the skin – there’s a good chance that you’ll fall asleep within the first few minutes – we did! What we did appreciate is that Nana really gave due diligence to

every main area of the body that could possibly benefit from the healing strokes of Ayurveda – the back, arms, hands, neck, head, legs, feet, and hips. One hour later and we’re in such a sinking into bliss state-of-mind that Nana lets us rest for a little longer before waking us for a cup of hot ginger tea and more chill-out time in the relaxation lounge. This Ayurvedic Massage was not only one of the best treatments we’ve had this entire year, it was also a learning process and a time for us to remember to slow down and appreciate our ohysical health and mental wellbeing. It’s a deeply healing therapy that is beneficial for the nervous system and immune system – something we felt almost instantly. We took our time enjoying the facilities at Natural Elements Spa before heading out into the crazy hustle of Dubai life. Aah, just what we needed! ✤

Alp Fest Dubai 2018 In a celebration of all things embracing the French Alps, FACT caught up with Laurent Rigaud to learn more about the upcoming event from October 15 to 21 and his experience in Dubai’s hospitality scene… Hi Laurent! You are heavily involved in the creation of Alp Fest – tell us more about the week-long event and what visitors can expect to experience? Absolutely, I initiated the Savoie week four years ago with the Hilton Jumeirah. For the first edition, we brought two chefs from Savoie and a ski champion. Since then we have grown into a multi-activity festival. This year, visitors will discover the cuisine of Jeremy Trincaz of Les Cornettes, meet two cheese masters Best Craftsmen of France (MOF), discover the chocolates of the 150-year-old Maison Bonnat, and taste the beverages from Maison Dolin and Jean Perrier et fils. Discover the Alp’s folk music with les Tradisons, experience our ski simulator, meet the representatives of the Chatel-Portes du soleil ski resort and discover the savoir-faire of some of our exhibitors. What are some of the other organisations that you are a part of in celebrating French culture and heritage here in the UAE? I am the president of the French Community Club in Dubai, an association that organises various social and cultural activities for the French community and francophone. Why is it important to you to share your French roots with the wider UAE community? In this particular case, bringing the Alps to Dubai is natural. There are quite a number of UAE nationals and residents that own properties in Savoie, especially in and around Evian where I was born. In the summer, you can meet UAE friends who visit our beautiful mountains and lakes. In the winter you can see them on the ski slopes of Courchevel, Valloire, Val Thorens or Chatel, we are getting more and 98

more people discovering the snow of our Alps. Working in hospitality, what are three key elements that you believe are important to fulfill guest requirements? - Consistency in quality and service - Guest focus and recognition - Value for money You bring a wealth of experience to the UAE hospitality industry. What has kept you so loyal and dedicated to this sector for so long? My grandmothers and my mother who have raised me were hard working women and fabulous cooks. I was raised in the kitchen. I went through the traditional French hospitality education system and held various positions over the years with great mentors. My loyalty to our industry is based on the passion that I have developed for restaurants and hotels, people, our guests, our team members and the envy to always deliver the best. Working in this industry has given me lots of opportunities, to travel the world, develop myself and meet great people. What are some of your professional goals over the next year? My key goal for next year is to open our three new hotel properties on The Palm. ✤
