Making The Most Of Summer

“I love how summer just wraps its arms around you like a warm blanket.” Kellie Elmore “

Hands up who’s still here for the summer. Our office has been depleted somewhat but those of us left behind are battling through the scorching heat and, to help you do the same, we’ve rounded up a whole range of staycation offers from some of our favourite hotels. There are lots of options to stay and play, to make the summer sun more bearable.

We also took a couple of memorable staycations of our own, to the gorgeous Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som, which was seriously fab, and Alwadi Hotel Doha –MGallery, where we took full advantage of all that’s on offer in Msheireb.

Our second feature this month is also holiday focussed with a roundup of Summer Camps to keep the kids busy during the long school break. From arts and crafts to sports, gymnastics and tech, there’s something for everyone to make sure young minds and bodies stay occupied as they make new friends and lifelong memories.

As always, our Dining section has some of the best deals around for sumptuous summer feasts and we’ve been out and about across the city sampling what’s on offer – read our review pages to find out what we thought.

In the Arts & Crafts pages, I took the chance for a chat with Raelene Gibson, lead singer of the band Studio 974 – she’s a disco diva, so I felt I was in good company and can’t wait to see them playing live.

Elsewhere this month you’ll find news from the worlds of motoring, tech, fashion and entertainment, plus info on what’s coming up around town. Stay cool with us, summer’s nearly over.

CELEBRATING QATAR’S MARINE ENVIRONMENT

In the first event of its kind, the recently launched SkillFest celebrates local and sustainable crafts inspired by the country’s oceanic heritage.

Sponsored by Visit Qatar, events take place at four different locations across the country; Msheireb Galleria, Place Vendome, Mall of Qatar and West Walk, with visitors invited to indulge in local arts, crafts and culture. Activities and displays are led by local and resident artists and crafters. There are Arabic calligraphy, astronomy and sciences exhibitions, manuscripts and anecdotes, pavilions on local marine creatures, photography exhibitions by Qatari photographers, including Azzam Al-Mannai and Qatar Photography Center, as well as shows by artists including Khaled Al Jabri and Faisal Al Jarkas alongside artisan markets featuring products by 24 artists. In addition, there are competitions for visitors with valuable prizes for the winners. Artist and event co-founder, Bachir Mohamad, said: “The goal of the festival is to celebrate the rich fabric of Qatari life. Each location will host unique pavilions, offering visitors the opportunity to experience different aspects of Qatari heritage and contemporary culture. We are confident that the natural and environmental elements that inspired the event will have the same inspiring effect on visitors.”

Qatari artist Ahmed Al-Emadi, co-founder of Bluribbon Design Atelier, one of the co-organisers, added that the festival is an opportunity to develop skills for everyone, whether they are amateurs or professionals. “Our belief as organisers is that skills can be acquired. Even talented artists benefit from meeting professionals and learning from their

experiences to save them effort and time, which will place them on the fastest and most secure path to success,” he said. “We are delighted to collaborate with Visit Qatar and the partners of the SkillFest in designing and executing four temporary public art installations launched simultaneously in the four commercial complexes throughout the duration of this festival.”

Designed by Hassan Al Mutawaa and named by Faisal Al Naimi, the four mascots of SkillFest represent the diverse forms of life that are found in Qatar’s marine environment. Laffan, the whale shark, is inspired by the calm and gentle whale sharks found in Qatar’s waters. Barga is a calm and graceful dugong, while Safia, the turtle, is a symbol of agility and endurance. Rahhal is a stingray which embodies fast movement and successful camouflage. These mascots are the driving forces of the event, and their statues are found at the four different locations.

SkillFest is running till August 15 (Sunday to Thursday, and Saturday, from 11am to 10pm and from 2pm to 10pm on Fridays). Entry to both the events and workshops is free, though some workshops require prior registration. ✤

Since their founding in 1927, Volvo have gone on to become one of the most well-known and respected automotive brands in the world and they are highly regarded for their competence in safety, design (incorporating their Swedish heritage) and performance.

This month, thanks to the team at Volvo Cars Qatar, FACT got behind the wheel of the brand’s first fully electric small premium SUV, the 2025 Volvo EX30.

Dynamic Exterior

The first thing we noticed as the car came into our view was that despite it being the smallest SUV in Volvo’s lineup, the EX30 is a unique creation that exudes performance-inspired styling from every angle. Designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo to date, the EX30 efficiently uses renewable and recycled materials for around 25% of all aluminium and 17% of all steel and plastics components of the exterior. The car follows a Scandinavian design language with clean bold lines that’re complemented by a robust stance. At the front, the deftly sculpted bonnet flows neatly into the large blank grille that is strikingly punctuated with the Volvo emblem. While other familiar Volvo design elements, such as the Thor’s Hammer shaped LED headlights, help frame the confident face of the car. At the flanks, the athletic stance of the vehicle is underscored by bold lines and 19-inch wheels with a stylish glossy black finish. A wide panoramic glass sunroof interlocks with the compact SUV’s pillars contributing to the EX30’s eye-catching appearance. The well-balanced proportions continue at the back with C-shaped, stacked LED tail lights completing the rear look.

Progressive Interior

Shifting our collective attention to the interior, as we got inside the EX30, we were immediately struck by the elegant, minimal but very modern design of the cabin, which takes its inspiration from Scandinavian nature. Additionally, the model’s interior also uses recycled materials such as woven flax, upcycled denim, ground plastic and blended wool in various aspects like the doors, dashboard, seats, etc., for a greener footprint and a unique look. The front seats were uber comfortable, electrically adjustable sport seats with four-way lumbar support and a convenient memory function, the upholstery was in Nordico –a technically advanced material created from recycled textiles. There was sufficient head, shoulder and leg room for both front and rear seats. Once seated, we appreciated the ergonomic squared design of the steering wheel which had plenty of switches for driver controls and also housed the gear selector. Adding to the practical storage solutions and further using the cabin’s space effectively – the glovebox is relocated to the centre of the dashboard under the main screen, and the centre armrest now also houses the window controls and a sleek sliding cup holder. The large panoramic glass roof allowed for sunlight to stream into the cabin making the interior feel bright and spacious and the luggage compartment offers 318 litres of space, that’s large enough for a few carry-on suitcases, this can be increased when the split rear seats are folded.

Advanced Infotainment & Technology

For the first time in our experience and as a bold choice, the EX30 opts to forgo the instrument cluster from behind the steering wheel and instead combines it into the main central display. The single vertically oriented 12.3-inch screen serves as both the infotainment and gauge display. It manages to proficiently display at-a-glance driver information and all control features on one screen, which took some getting used to but eventually proved convenient. This intentional setup plays into the minimal and elegant aesthetic of the overall space, which is enhanced by the five wonderful ambient lighting and sound themes that evoke different moods from Scandinavian landscapes. Also, the touchscreen delivers high-definition visuals and, most importantly, has a highly customisable fuss-free interface. Adding another layer of convenience were the Google apps and services that were built-in for the EX30. We were able to download apps from Google Play and use them alongside various other functions hands-free thanks to Google Voice Assistant. The system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay. Additionally, Volvo installed a Harman Kardon premium soundbar across the base of the dashboard rather than individual speakers throughout the vehicle, which was a nice touch.

Power, Performance & Safety

As with every vehicle we inspect, getting out on the road was our favourite part of the experience. First off, the EX30 has a convenient keyless entry and was ready to go once seated without having to press any buttons. We were fortunate enough to drive the EX30

Single Motor Extended Range variant. Its capable rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup produces 200kW of power with 343Nm of torque, allowing us to surge from 0-100km/h in a quick 3.6 seconds, that translates into a top speed of around 180km/h. As we further tested the nuances of the vehicle, we were left impressed with its great handling, proficient cornering and the keenly responsive braking that complements the powerful acceleration. Volvo have also stated that this EX30 variant, when fully charged, delivers a range of around 476km. The fast-charging public stations can charge 10% to 80% in a little over 25 minutes.

Designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any Volvo to date, the EX30 efficiently uses renewable and recycled materials.”

Like every Volvo, the EX30 is big on safety and in turn is properly fashioned with a full suite of safety and driver assistance features. It’s equipped with a door opening alert – one of several features of the Safe Space Technology – a new advanced driver alert system and much more.

Our Verdict

The Volvo EX30 is a superb compact electric SUV with impressive range and strong cutting-edge tech features combined with Volvo quality, safety and design, that’s provided at an accessible price. ✤

ELECTRIC EXPANSION

Premium manufacturer Porsche has doubled the size of the model range for its all-electric Macan.

While the focus for the rear-wheel-drive Macan, the company’s first all-electric SUV, was primarily on high efficiency and range, the new Macan 4S, which is equipped with the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (ePTM) system, will fill the gap between the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo.

The new Macan all-electric entry model gets its energy from a high-voltage battery with a gross energy content of 100kWh. Propulsion is provided exclusively by the rear-axle motor that is used in the Macan 4. The electric motor has a 480-amp pulse inverter (PWR) in which the highly efficient semiconductor material silicon carbide (SiC) is used to provide higher efficiency. In combination with Launch Control, the Macan produces up to 265kW of overboost power and the maximum torque is 563Nm.

From a standing start, the car reaches 100km/h in 5.7 seconds and has a top speed of 220km/h.

By forgoing all-wheel drive, the Macan is 110kg lighter than the Macan 4 and therefore requires less electricity for propulsion. This results in a range of up to 641km.

The Macan 4S has a new rear-axle motor and a powerful 600amp SiC pulse inverter. Together with the front-axle motor also used in the Macan 4 and the Turbo, this results in a system output of 330kW with a short power overboost to up to 380kW. With Launch Control, the maximum torque is 820Nm.

The performance figures are correspondingly impressive: with Launch Control, the Macan 4S makes the standard sprint from 0 – 100km/h in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 240km/h. It has a combined WLTP range of up to 606km. The Macan 4S is equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damping control as standard allowing the chassis to be further optimised for increased performance and comfort.

The two new models have all the qualities of the second generation of the Macan, including the progressive, timeless design with range-optimised aerodynamics. The 800-volt architecture of the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) enables a DC charging capacity of up to 270kW and the high-voltage battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 21 minutes at a fast-charging station.

A new exterior colour, Slate Grey Neo, is now available for all Macan models. A 20-inch Macan S wheel has been added to the wheel portfolio and a new off-road design package is also optionally available for all models.

With the electrification of the Macan, Porsche has introduced a completely new display and control system, the Porsche Driver Experience offers a mix of digital and analogue elements. These include an instrument cluster with a 12.6-inch curved display, a 10.9inch passenger display, a head-up display with augmented reality technology and ambient lighting with a communication light. ✤ GO: CALL 4459 9666

WELCOMING A NEW ICON

Kemal Curic, Global Design Director at Lincoln, gives insight into the marque’s new Nautilus model.

Offering a refreshed digital environment using colour, scent and touch, the all-new Lincoln Nautilus seamlessly blends nature and technology.

“Sanctuary was our guiding principle for the creation of the Nautilus,” said Kemal. “Particularly on the interior, we wanted to create a true third space on wheels that is connected and allows you to explore your journey in a most relaxed environment.”

The vehicle features a reimagined interior that aims to maximise the sense of open space for every passenger. The design team studied how Lincoln clients interact with their living spaces but Kemal revealed: “Among the [other] inspirations we used were Zaha Hadid’s architecture and the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi.”

The use of human-centric technology has long been a mainstay in Lincoln’s overall design vision and the Nautilus’ 48-inch panoramic display – the largest in its class – embodies this ethos thanks to its integrated flowing, horizontal instrument panel that offers new levels of personalisation.

Lincoln has always looked to nature as a source of inspiration, and the all-new Nautilus takes this up a notch. A reimagined cabin incorporates new ambient lighting along with crystal-inspired details that capture the essence of seeing sun reflected on water.

A flat-top steering wheel allows drivers to see over rather than through the wheel, giving an increased feeling of openness and freedom. And, in keeping with the nature-inspired cabin experience, the vehicle offers a specially curated range of digital scents for the cabin.

“We consciously chose the specific colours that pair with each digital scent and on-screen environment, which sets the stage for a range of moods and experiences,” explained Kemal. Three aromas were purposefully selected to evoke memorable moments and, alongside the award-winning available Revel

Ultima 3D Audio System, with 28 speakers to envelop occupants in rich sound, they aim to activate every sense.

Designed, according to Kemal, to invoke ‘calmness, comfort and reverence’, the model features a dynamic, new exterior including LED headlamps, available H2 Pixel Headlamps as well as all-new LED taillamps with animation. Additionally, the 2024 Nautilus introduces four new exterior colours – Black Onyx and Medium Light Space Gray, Smoked Truffle and calm Black Onyx and Allura Blue.

The Jet Appearance Package, which is available on two trims, includes two-tone paint, high-gloss black 22-inch wheels, an exclusive interior environment and anodized black exterior elements, while the exclusive Black Onyx Sport interior features a Copper Code aluminium applique, enhanced by Dusted Copper accent stitching throughout.

For the ultimate in Lincoln luxury, the all-new Nautilus will offer a new, exclusive Lincoln Presidential theme – Redwood – in addition to the popular Chalet theme. Redwood mimics the warmth and beauty of the redwood forest, with a tree-inspired motif. ✤

STAY FRESH

Extend the shelf life of fruit and vegetables in the fridge with this handy device.

Shelfy by Vitesy is an innovative fridge purifier that combines a compact design with practical utility.

The device uses an innovative and sustainable nanomaterialbased photocatalytic technology which eliminates pollutants within the filter. Photocatalysis is a safe chemical reaction that absorbs air pollutants and turns them into harmless elements. By removing ethylene molecules (the main offender responsible for the ripening of fruits and vegetables) from the air, Shelfy promotes the slowing of the ripening process minimising the spoilage of fruit and vegetables by removing bacteria, microorganisms and odours from the fridge. This in turn extends the shelf life of food by up to around 12 days. Moreover, Shelfy doesn’t work continuously while inside the refrigerator, it instead operates by maintaining purification cycles that alternate between periods when it is active and periods when it is inactive on an hourly basis. This functionality allows Shelfy to efficiently conserve battery power without compromising its effectiveness.

The device can switch between three efficient energy modes comprising: Eco – which optimises battery consumption for as long as possible; Crisper – specifically used when placing the device in the crisper drawer; and Performance – when using Shelfy’s purifying power to its fullest capabilities. The gadget is crafted from high-quality materials and, more

importantly, it includes a washable and reusable filter. Also, the Vitesy Hub app offers additional Shelfy features such as monitoring the status of the refrigerator through various parameters; toggling between modes; receiving useful information on Shelfy's filter and refrigerator maintenance; and more. ✤

MEET THE AQUATIC ADVENTURER

FACT chatted to Bill Lentz, General Manager of Meryal Waterpark, about pre-opening, amazing rides and world record attempts.

You were involved in the pre-opening for the park, what did this entail?

Joining Meryal Waterpark as a consultant in July 2023 and transitioning to the role of General Manager in December 2023 has been an incredible journey. Meryal is an impressive project and today, it stands as Qatar's largest waterpark, which is a testament to our team's dedication and hard work.

The pre-opening phase involved overseeing the final stages of construction to ensure all elements of the park were completed to the highest standards. Given the scale and ambition of Meryal, this was no small feat.

Staffing was another significant aspect. We needed to recruit a large, diverse team and ensure they were thoroughly trained to deliver a world-class experience to our guests. This involved developing comprehensive training programmes to maintain high standards of safety, customer service and operational efficiency. Overall, the pre-opening phase was about bringing together various components – from construction to staffing to cultural elements – to create a unique and memorable experience for our visitors. With over 35 years in the industry, I've had the privilege of managing some of the largest parks in America and around the world. Meryal stands as a testament to innovation and ambition in the waterpark industry, boasting world-class attractions and setting new standards in guest experience.

Please tell us about the water park, how many staff, rides and other facilities are there?

Meryal Waterpark is spread over six acres (281,769sq/m) and designed to accommodate up to 7,500 guests. We are working towards a full staffing level of 750 team members.

The park boasts a total of 69 attractions, including 53 slides, a wave pool, two rivers, three splash pads and play structures for kids, and five dry attractions. One of our unique features is the Alghazal family roller coaster, which is not common in waterparks. Among the highlights at Meryal Waterpark is the Rapid Refinery, a one-of-a-kind attraction where riders experience an added dimension of fun as the slide rotates while they navigate through it. As the first rotating water slide in the Middle East, this unique feature sets Rapid Refinery apart.

As part of our upcoming projects, Meryal will offer an educational experience through the Edutainment Cave. This immersive attraction will allow guests to learn about Qatar's history of oil and gas discovery in a fun and interactive way, guided by the animated character ‘Oily’. Visitors will be able to embark on a journey through time, exploring the nation’s rich heritage and modern achievements. Additionally, guests will soon be able to embark on a Virtual Reality adventure, experiencing the rush of sliding through vivid landscapes with twists and turns, immersing themselves in an aquatic journey.

For those seeking relaxation, our four pools and beaches, along with two rivers, offer a diverse range of aquatic fun and exploration. Our eight dining venues serve a diverse array of cuisines, including Italian and Asian, as well as a dedicated kids' restaurant and an international food court. Poolside and beach bars provide additional options for refreshments. For shopping enthusiasts, Meryal offers retail areas and shops throughout the park. The Village marketplace offers traditional Qatari handicrafts, while the Photo Shop and The Refinery provide photographic mementos and contemporary merchandise. The Future gift shop presents captivating items that blend imagination with reality.

There have been two world record attempts since opening, are you planning more?

We currently have two Guinness World Record attempts for The Rig 1938: the world's tallest waterslide tower at 85 metres and the tower with the most slides. We are still in the process of finalising these records with Guinness World Records. Additionally, we are considering pursuing another record for the longest total slide lengths on one slide tower, measuring more than 3.5 kilometres.

Do you get to try all the rides and which is your personal favourite?

I've had the privilege of trying all the rides at Meryal Waterpark, often being among the first to experience them before they open to the public. If I have to choose a favourite, it would definitely be The Rig 1938. It's not only an iconic part of the park but also a symbol of innovation and ambition.

When you’re not busy at work, how do you like to spend your downtime in Qatar?

I've been living in Doha for a year now, and it has been a remarkable experience discovering Qatar for the first time. It’s a

fascinating country with a rich culture and a lot to offer. In my downtime, I enjoy visiting Souq Waqif, strolling through the alleys and immersing myself in the vibrant local culture. I also enjoy playing golf, which is a great way to unwind and take in the beautiful surroundings of the city. ✤

PERSONALISED DINING

Ian Minnis, Executive Chef at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, talks culinary memories and crafting guest experiences.

What is your earliest kitchen memory and did this impact your decision to become a chef?

My earliest kitchen memory dates back to my childhood in the countryside, where convenience stores were non-existent. Raised in a large family, I was surrounded by the culinary prowess of my mother and grandmother. They were extraordinary cooks and bakers, crafting everything from fresh breads and homemade desserts to jams, marmalades and preserved meats and fish sourced from our own land. Our kitchen was the heart of our home, permeating every corner with incredible aromas that still resonate deeply with me today. Whether I'm exploring a bustling market or dining in a restaurant, these scents transport me back to those cherished days. This early exposure to the art of cooking is woven into the fabric of my being – it's part of my soul.

Since arriving at Banana Island, you have introduced personalised culinary experiences for guests as well as a sustainable Chef’s Garden. Please tell us about these initiatives. Since arriving at Banana Island Resort Doha, my focus has been on elevating culinary concepts and realising our vision for exceptional guest experiences. A key initiative has been the establishment of a sustainable Chef’s Garden, which holds a personal connection for me reminiscent of my childhood. Inspired by my parents’ practice, the garden cultivates vegetables using nutrient-rich water from our in-house compost system. Here, food waste undergoes composting to produce fertilising water, nurturing our vegetables with a natural touch and ensuring sustainability in our culinary practices.

You have also achieved unprecedented, measurable guest satisfaction. To what do you attribute this?

Our unprecedented guest satisfaction stems from a comprehensive approach rooted in understanding our guests deeply. We begin by delving into their origins and understanding their unique preferences. This insight guides us in crafting menus and culinary concepts that resonate with their personal tastes and experiences. By engaging directly with our guests and listening attentively to their interests, we create a welcoming atmosphere into our own home. At Banana Island, we strive to extend the warmest hospitality, ensuring each guest feels completely relaxed, delighted and satisfied. This dedication transforms Banana Island into more than just a destination – it becomes their home away from home, where our doors are always open.

What is your signature dish introduced at Banana Island Resort, how was it developed and what, in your opinion, makes it popular?

At Banana Island Resort Doha, our signature dish is the Bamboo Biryani, a creation born from a blend of innovation and culinary passion. Developed uniquely for our guests, this dish is not only cooked but also presented tableside in a bamboo cylinder, making it a distinctive experience available exclusively at the island. Its popularity lies in its novelty and the immersive dining experience it offers, embodying the heart and soul of our culinary philosophy – creating something exceptional and memorable that resonates with our guests. ✤

AN INDIAN CUISINE MASTERCLASS

SD discovers homely flavours and culinary excellence on a visit to Rasa.

Rasa at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha is such a pleasant fusion of Indian flavours with modern, and occasionally healthy twists. Located on the ground level of this popular all-inclusive fivestar property, the restaurant leaves a very good first impression.

As soon as we enter, we're greeted by a smiling hostess and a large, colourful elephant statue made of metal. It’s a playful take on the Indian people's love for this beautiful creature, and it really livens up the mood.

The dining area, further down on the left, is welcoming and warm, with contemporary décor and vibrant colours, that somehow manage to uplift the atmosphere without being overbearing. An eye-catching mix of teal and orange upholstery blends wonderfully against grey textured walls and a grand orange highlight wall, with white leaf-themed line art. The light bulbs above in circular glass holders add to the ambience. As we run through the menu, the staff bring us refreshing grapefruit mocktails. Not very typical of India – but still very good. The menu is a mix of north and south Indian delights. Spiced papad are served at our table alongside some aromatic chutney. It's almost unthinkable these days to start an Indian meal at a restaurant without this staple and Rasa doesn't disappoint. Shortly after, a visual treat arrives. Little puri shells perched over a tiny jug of tamarind water – the famous Indian street food Pani Puri – with potato and sprouts inside. Eat it whole, or you'll have that green water dribbling down your chin.

We patiently wait for the appetisers, with not even an inkling of what’s to come. The grandest presentation of aromatic tandoori bites rolls up to our table. We're not joking – this trolley is enormous and decorated with a majestic Jaipuri umbrella. Three large plates containing a mix of meat and seafood appetisers sit in front of us, ready to be devoured. The lobster grilled with spices steals the show – every spice is distinct in this silky soft crustacean. The Fish Tikka doesn't fall far behind – beautifully marinated in turmeric and other Indian flavours, it falls apart like a slab of melting butter. The milk-marinated Malai Chicken is a favourite – don't mistake it's subtle taste for weakness. The lamb chops are rich and tender, our knives slide right through. If you're a true-blue street food lover, you're no stranger to the classic Mumbai vada pav. This deep-fried potato patty is stuffed into a soft bun with spices and Rasa does it perfectly. What an experience. A properly grand Indian feast. And we are just getting started. The mains arrive next. We're stuffed from the appetisers, but who says no to Butter Chicken? And multiple servings of Chicken Biryani. Pro tip – spoon a little of the Butter Chicken gravy onto your Biryani for the ultimate trip to flavour town. The Paneer Kadhai is a masterpiece of North Indian classic cooking. A creamy, rich gravy with decadent, tender cubes of cottage cheese – it's familiar but unique, with the perfect level of spice. Every bit of this meal feels authentic and homely. And even though every last compartment of our stomach pouches is laden with garlic and garam masala, we impatiently wait to see what's on the dessert menu.

We ask our lovely hostess for recommendations. She brings us a pretty bowl of Rasmalai. This dish is not for the weak – it's heavy on dairy and even heavier on sugar. But Rasa's chefs manage

to make this acquired-taste-dessert into something of a crowd pleaser. Rich with fruits, cashews and chia seeds, this milk-based sweet is almost addictive. We only pause out of curiosity, to try a healthier version of one of India's sweetest desserts. We're a little apprehensive about this Wheat Gulab Jamun but what could go wrong? Absolutely nothing is the right answer. The pillowy balls are doused in a rose and cardamom sweet syrup. What a surprise – it tastes exactly like the regular white flour version of this popular sweet dish. We wrap up with smiles having discovered a little taste of traditional India right here in Doha. There's nothing more comforting than Indian food, and it's better with a side of Indian hospitality. ✤

FLUENT IN ITALIAN COMFORT FOOD

SD headed to Le Royal Méridien Doha to discover a stylish eatery with sumptuous Italian flavours.

ADRIFT Anda by celebrity chef David Myers, located at Le Royal Méridien Doha, is a cosy and characterful Italian diner. A concept brought to life by David Myers' insatiable desire for travel, which has resulted in him being dubbed the Gypsy Chef, ADRIFT Anda is the perfect spot to get some muchneeded Italian-style TLC. As Chef David set out to discover iconic new destinations and open restaurants around the world, his Italian adventure highlighted three key things for his restaurants –pizza, pasta and meat – and all of these are brilliantly represented at this venue.

The décor is a fusion between rustic tones and modern motifs, with cute nods to classic Italian icons, such as a yellow Vespa at the entrance. With ambient lighting and a large brick oven, right beside an open kitchen with square-paned glass encased in a black iron frame, it feels as if we're sitting in the home of an important Italian family, letting them spoil all our senses.

A live singer belts out soulful, melodic tunes and we simultaneously dive into the menu that is a superb mix of classic comfort foods with contemporary touches and flavours. The selection of appetisers is very tempting, the type that makes us want to order one of everything. But the Pasta Fritta most piques our interest, with a smoked aubergine mayo (something we've never seen before). So, we start with that. It's quite addictive. The dough, which is the same dough they use for their pizzas, is fermented for 72 hours and goes perfectly alongside the wood-fire roasted aubergine mayo. Two dips in

and the smoky flavour really takes over, in the most delicious way, with a nice, earthy aftertaste.

The restaurant is a true Italy lover’s fusion of a Roman trattoria, a Neapolitan pizzeria and a Florentine steakhouse. Which can only mean the pizza is a must-try. It's a tough choice between the Mushroom, Provolone and Beef Pepperoni versus the Ricotta, Black Truffle and Farm Egg. The latter wins and is brought fresh out of the oven shortly after. Little puddles of ricotta surround a farm egg in the centre, with a generous amount of black truffle that really brings it together. We take it to the next level and order some chilli oil to kick up the spice a notch and it's absolutely winning.

The next course is obvious – pasta. We order the Truffle Girasoli with Lamb Ragu and Rosemary. The girasoli has the right bite, drowning in the most flavourful juices of the lamb ragu that clings on to the al dente pasta. It's comfortingly familiar and it properly represents the humble yet brave menu that David Myers coined on a napkin, aboard a train headed for Tuscany.

We're too stuffed to try Anda's signature Veal Milanese, though it’s highly recommended by the staff and Restaurant Manager Vanessa.

This is undeniably honest Italian food and Head Chef Christian drives the point home. He's an eclectic mix of Brazilian and Italian – so it's no surprise that every dish has a special flair, even though each one focuses on simple, fresh ingredients.

The finale is obvious – an epic tiramisu. A big bowl of perfectly constructed tiramisu arrives. The mascarpone cheese is fresh

and mixes very well with the coffee, negating any sour flavour that may sometimes overpower this popular dessert.

The live singer continues to serenade us as we spoon up the last morsel of that delightful tiramisu and realise joyfully that dessert isn't over – the best is yet to come. The Lemon Sorbet with Basil Oil takes the trophy tonight. The simplest of tastes create an exquisite and elevated dessert with the sweetness of the basil perfectly balancing the tartness of the lemon – we can't recommend this enough.

Our meal finally finished, we leave with the sensation we've left something behind (it's most likely the Veal Milanese) and can't wait for a repeat visit to this restaurant that speaks fluent Italian comfort food. ✤

A JOURNEY OF SOPHISTICATION AND FLAVOUR

AMS experienced a day of culinary indulgence at the Atrium Lounge.

During a recent visit to the Atrium Lounge at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Conventional Hotel, I had the pleasure of experiencing their Moroccan Breakfast. On entering the property, I was greeted by the sight of the magnificent interior – a grand dome structure at the centre, intricately designed to reflect an aura of sophistication. The space was adorned with plush seating in a palette of soft creams and golds, complemented by rich red accents. The elegant table lamps created a warm and welcoming atmosphere. After being shown to my seat by Fatma, the breakfast was served up on a beautifully ornate copper tray. The presentation was visually appealing, with vibrant colours from the fresh vegetables, olives and juices contrasting against the warm tones of the tray and tableware.

Baked Treats And Savoury Delights

The assortment of breads and pastries was impressive. It included croissants, sesame-seed rolls and traditional Moroccan pancakes (baghrir), all of which were fresh and delicious. The croissants were buttery and flaky, while the baghrir had a delightful spongy texture, perfect for soaking up honey or jam. Accompanying the bread was a variety of savoury items, including spring rolls and samosas. These had crispy exteriors and flavourful fillings that added a nice contrast to the sweeter elements of the breakfast. A bowl of mixed olives provided a tangy and slightly salty counterpoint to the other dishes.

Fresh vegetables, including carrots and leafy greens, added a refreshing crunch and balanced the meal nicely.

Shakshuka

One of the highlights of the breakfast was the shakshuka, a traditional North African dish of poached eggs in a rich, spiced tomato sauce. It was served in a small, colourful tagine, keeping it warm and adding to the authenticity of the experience. The eggs were perfectly cooked, with runny yolks that mixed beautifully with the robust and flavourful sauce. The combination of spices, including cumin and paprika, gave the dish a delightful depth that paired wonderfully with the fresh bread.

Kaab al-Ghazal

Another delightful addition was the Kaab al-Ghazal, also known as ‘gazelle horns’. These crescent-shaped pastries were filled with a fragrant almond paste and delicately flavoured with orange blossom water. The Kaab al-Ghazal was a blend of sweetness and nuttiness, with a tender, flaky pastry that melted in the mouth. This traditional Moroccan treat added an exquisite touch to the breakfast, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Morocco.

Beverages

The breakfast was complemented by freshly squeezed orange juice, which was vibrant and refreshing. Additionally, traditional Moroccan tea was served in ornate glasses. Aromatic and perfectly sweetened, it was a delightful accompaniment to the meal.

Afternoon Tea

Later that day, I was also fortunate enough to also sample their exquisite afternoon tea. I was greeted with a refreshing welcome drink of sparkling apple juice as the food was presented on elegant platters. The savoury selection was a delightful array of flavours. The slow-cooked beef with asparagus, cucumber and saffron aioli on pumpernickel bread was a standout, with tender beef complemented by the fresh crunch of the asparagus and cucumber, and the saffron aioli adding a rich, aromatic touch. The Scottish salmon with honeyglazed brie cheese and raspberry crispy wrap was another highlight, the fish perfectly smoked and pairing wonderfully with the creamy brie and sweet-tart raspberry. The light turkey and cheddar cheese with pistachio, spinach and strawberry long sponge was a unique and flavourful offering, balancing the savoury turkey and cheddar with the sweetness of the strawberry and the nutty crunch of the pistachio, making for a well-rounded bite.

Sumptuous Sweets

The sweet treats were equally impressive. The Luscious Berry Indulge featured a rich berry filling encased in a delicate pastry, with perfectly balanced sweet and tart flavours. The Lamington, a classic Australian treat, was soft and moist, coated in chocolate and coconut, adding a nostalgic and comforting touch. The Berry Bliss Tart was a visual and culinary delight, filled with a luscious berry compote and topped with fresh berries, providing a burst of

freshness and sweetness in every bite. The Eton Mess was a playful dessert with layers of meringue, cream and fresh berries – light, airy and perfectly sweetened. The Floral Elegance pastry was a beautiful creation, with floral notes that added a sophisticated touch to the dessert selection.

The Arabic sweets selection included a variety of traditional treats such as Flower Baklava, Luqaimat Tart, Pistachio Borma and Saffron Pistachio. Each sweet was rich in flavour and texture, showcasing the intricate and delightful world of Middle Eastern desserts.

Overall experience

The Atrium Lounge at the Sheraton Grand Doha offered an exceptional dining experience, whether for breakfast or afternoon tea. The Moroccan breakfast was a delightful culinary journey, with traditional flavours presented in a luxurious setting. Similarly, the afternoon tea combined traditional and innovative elements. The attention to detail in both the presentation and the quality of the food was evident and the service was impeccable, making the Atrium Lounge highly recommended for anyone seeking a sophisticated dining experience. ✤

SELF-DISCOVERY THROUGH MINDFULNESS

In today's fast-paced world, taking a break is essential for your well-being. Fernanda Langhammer embarked on a journey of body, mind and soul at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som.

There’s nothing better than planning an escape from time to time and going to Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som is a getaway done right.

The 60-minute drive from Doha set the tone, a road trip before reaching paradise. Spread over more than 280,000sq/m, the resort makes a stunning first impression, and the architecture blends harmoniously with the desert scenery at a private coastal location on the northernmost tip of Qatar.

I arrived at lunchtime and went straight to Al Sidr restaurant. My check-in was done smoothly by Elm, from my restaurant chair. The resort is composed of two areas, Serenity (adults-only) and Discovery (family-friendly); the sides are connected, but Al Sidr and other facilities can only be used by those aged 16 and above. I chose a table near the lagoon that separates Serenity and Discovery, and the view of the blue water with lush greenery put me straight into restful mode. A sign on the table saying ‘disconnect to reconnect’ reminded me that it’s encouraged not to use your mobile or electronic devices in public areas; this was just the message I needed to fully embrace this wellness journey.

The décor at Al Sidr is minimalistic, with some seats painted in mustard yellow and pairing beautifully with the wooden tables. On the walls, Islamic arabesque patterns give a local touch. I ordered the Detox Vegetables Curry, which I later learned to prepare in a special cooking class with Chef Ekasit. It’s made with kohlrabi, a vegetable that can improve metabolism and aid with weight loss,

pumpkin, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, broccoli, mushroom and sweet basil served in a coconut and red curry paste that, despite having only four ingredients, was super flavoursome. It was accompanied by wild rice, which is rich in B vitamins, manganese and magnesium. I also had a spectacular breakfast at Al Sidr with a beautiful selection of gluten-free bread and a vegan cheese spread made with macadamia and cashew nuts, French thyme, black truffle and black pepper, which was absolutely delicious with a creamy consistency.

It's important to mention that all four restaurants, Al Sidr, Aizoon, Acacia and Malbu (seasonal), had their menus prepared with the goal of helping guests achieve their ultimate well-being through nutrition – a mix of nutritional science and culinary artistry. The mix and match of ingredients has a deeper purpose, offering nutrient-rich meals that are anti-inflammatory, high in fibre, low in fat, support digestion and provide a source of high energy. It could present a challenge for the chefs to deliver tasty food but it’s one that they accomplished successfully in all outlets I tried. The portion sizes are half those of a regular restaurant, yet they satiate the appetite.

It was time to head to my room; I stayed in the Serenity Junior Suite, basically a small villa all to myself. The space is divided into two parts: turning left on entry, you head to the bedroom and living area, and to the right, you have the massive washroom and dressing space with a private outside terrace complete with a plunge pool – what more

does a girl need to be happy? The bedroom features a comfortable king-sized bed and a pillow menu to help you find the best option. The fridge is stocked daily with juices, fruits and nuts for healthy snacks. Bliss!

Body, Mind and Soul

But a wellness resort is also (and mainly) about your health, and my consultation with my advisor, Orranat Thanamteun, a Holistic Health Practitioner, was essential to planning all my treatments during my visit. Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som offers an array of therapies, so many that I won't be able to cover them all – the holistic approach runs from a vast spa menu and medical specialists to aesthetic consultations to enhance your beauty.

After booking your stay at Zulal, you will receive a questionnaire via email, with an array of questions regarding your health, that needs to be filled out and sent back. With that in hand, Orranat knew which points to discuss with me. She then booked a few other consultations and the treatments she thought would benefit me. My encounter with Nimra, the physiotherapist, was to assess my posture and discuss any physical pain. As an amateur runner, I wanted to highlight a few points and, after the assessment, she decided to book a specific therapy and a fitness consultancy. The treatment with Yokky was absolutely fantastic; she used radio frequency and light machines but also worked on some stretching

and pressure point massage that made me feel incredible afterwards, even though it was quite painful when she was at it. The fitness was all about stretching techniques and tips on improving my performance. The Physiotherapy Pavilion offers some of the latest treatments in the field, including Neurac and Gyrotonic equipment.

I haven't been the best sleeper lately, so Orranat recommended a few spa therapies. I had the Qatari Hamiz, a deeply relaxing full-body massage using circular strokes with tadleek oil, which is infused with medicinal herbs, and performed with hot stones. The benefit of this treatment is to re-energise the body and stimulate circulation and energy flow. I also had a comprehensive scalp massage. Head massages are known for enhancing the quality of sleep – the relaxing effect and improved blood circulation promote balance in the autonomic nervous system. I also checked the impressive facilities available, such as the gorgeous Hammam area, a Watsu (a form of aquatic therapy) room, a beautiful indoor pool with jets and two plunge pools, one with hot water and the other with cold for contrast bath therapy, a salt room and much, much more. But one of the most incredible features is the ice cave covered in snow to let you cool down rapidly.

However, the high point was my consultation with Mubaris Ahamed, a TAIM (Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine) Specialist. TAIM is rooted in the Arab world and influenced by Islamic traditions and ancient practices. It's a holistic

system of healing that combines medicinal herbs, dietary practices and mind-body-spirit therapies. It considers the balance of the body's four humours: blood (dam - air), phlegm (balgham - water), yellow bile (safra - fire) and black bile (souda - earth). After a series of analyses, the specialist identifies which humour is prevalent in you to create a framework of lifestyle recommendations. It was my first time learning about this type of healing method and I found it fascinating. I left with a list of suggested foods to consume and avoid, herbal formulations to help with my lack of sleep and unbalanced hormones (which can be found in Zulal's Apothecary pharmacy), types of exercise and breathing techniques.

Unique Features

I have to say I was extremely impressed with the incredible facilities. There is something to please, provide care and heal in every aspect, but some things caught my attention the most.

The fine dining experience at Acacia is one of them. The restaurant is spectacular! I would come from Doha just to eat there again in a heartbeat. The sophisticated ambience and fantastic food make it a gem in the entire resort. The Seafood Cream, made with lobster pieces bathed in a creamy oceanic soup and the Stuffed Grape Leaves with Lentils are must-tries. A MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION OF TAIM

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som is marking August as its first dedicated month delving into the practices of Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine (TAIM).

August is the birth month of renowned physician and philosopher, Ibn Sina – author of the influential 11th century Canon of Medicine – and the resort will offer a full programme of immersive well-being activities designed to blend an ancient indigenous healing philosophy with modern therapies. The initiative will support guests in their wellness journey at the same time as highlighting the enduring relevance of TAIM.

TAIM forms the foundation of Zulal’s core offerings, which promote and sustain well-being through a focus on diet and nutrition, physical movement and recovery, adequate rest and sleep, optimal digestive function and mindfulness practices. Throughout August, guests will be able to engage in a variety of interactive workshops, enlightening talks, personalised consultations and exceptional culinary experiences – all rooted in the principles of TAIM.

Taking place at the resort’s House of Wisdom – which houses more than 4,000 books and is inspired by the historic Grand Library of Baghdad (7th – 13th century AD) –guests can start their journey by sampling a wide selection of TAIM teas and herbal infusions at the resort’s Tea House and explore a range of herbal well-being remedies at the on-site apothecary.

One of the six modalities of Zulal Wellness Resort is helping guests achieve a state of optimal well-being through the power of nutrition, using purposeful ingredients which are

anti-inflammatory, high in fibre and antioxidants, promote heart health, support digestion and offer a source of high energy. During August, specially crafted TAIM shots, packed with healing ingredients, will augment the nutrient-rich menu served at the resort’s signature restaurants, Aizoon, Al Sidra and Acacia before and after meals. A special set menu inspired by TAIM ingredients will also be served in Aizoon. Alongside nutrition, the Zulal Wellness Resort experience is also built upon fitness, spa, physiotherapy, holistic health and aesthetics. Celebrating the boundless potential of Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine as a unique and holistic path to wellness, the resort’s approach also encompasses mindbody therapies, traditional herbal medicine and physical therapies practised by resident specialists.

A variety of services at the resort are TAIM-inspired, from signature treatments such as Massage Al Batin (abdominal massage), Hijama (cupping therapy), Massage Al-Ra's (head massage) and traditional Qatari Hamiz (deep tissue massage) to other offerings including reflexology and lymphatic practices using a variety of TAIM-based herbal products, ensuring a genuine, singular and profound wellness experience.

Open to the public, selected TAIM Month events and experiences will also be available for non-retreat guests during August, including talks with wellness and medical experts every Saturday and at 3pm every Thursday at House of Wisdom; a TAIM-inspired set-menu lunch at flagship restaurant Aizoon; TAIM team activities at the House of Wisdom; and TAIM consultations and temperament evaluations.

Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine is a system of wellbeing originally practised in the Arab world and is based on the body of knowledge best formalised in the Canon of Medicine, written by physician-philosopher Ibn Sina, also known as Avicenna, in AD1025. Celebrating 1,000 years in 2025, the Canon of Medicine emphasises restoration and life balance through the pillars of physical movement and recovery, mindfulness, dietary, optimal digestive function and adequate rest. In its contemporary interpretation, TAIM is distilled into a range of treatments and programmes aimed at supporting health in the 21st century, with an emphasis on restoring life balance through herbal medicines, spiritual therapies, dietary and mind-body practices.

Guests of Zulal Wellness Resort enjoy complimentary access to the TAIM events, while options for non-guests are available to book online. . ✤

CRAFTED WITH CARE

AMS experienced a luxurious stay in the heart of Msheireb at Alwadi Hotel Doha - MGallery.

As we drove up to the grand entrance of the Alwadi Hotel Doha - MGallery, we were immediately greeted by the attentive valet who swiftly took care of our vehicle and luggage. Ushered inside to the elegant lobby, we approached the dark wood counter where impeccably dressed team members welcomed us with warm smiles. Salma, one of the front office crew, made sure our check in process was smooth and efficient, and a friendly staffer kindly showed us to our room.

We were fortunate to experience the Souq Suite. The décor reflected the rich cultural heritage of Doha, with traditional motifs and contemporary elegance seamlessly blended together. The spacious living area, adorned with luxurious furnishings, offered a perfect space to unwind. Large windows framed beautiful views of the bustling Souq Waqif and the tranquil waters beyond. The suite was equipped with every modern amenity we could wish for, from a well-stocked minifridge to high-speed internet access, ensuring the utmost comfort. Alwadi Hotel offers a range of luxurious accommodations designed to cater to the needs of every traveller. Options include deluxe rooms, superior rooms, executive suites and the exclusive Souq Suite. Each is thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and convenience, with plush bedding, spacious bathrooms and state-of-the-art technology.

A Stylish Start

We began our mini staycation in style with a delightful lunch at Cila. The meal was a culinary triumph, starting with succulent chicken shish and perfectly grilled sea bass. We savoured the flavours of tabbouleh and creamy hummus, ending on a sweet note with vanilla ice cream. The ambience of Cila was warm and inviting, with attentive service that made our lunch experience truly memorable.

After lunch, we retired to our room to unpack and relax, with stunning views of Souq Waqif. Later in the evening, we were invited to Infinity Rooftop for light snacks and mocktails. The panoramic views of the city skyline provided a breathtaking backdrop as we sipped our mocktails. The sophisticated ambience, with soft lighting and comfortable seating, invited lingering moments. We enjoyed boneless chicken wings and a beautiful plate of crudités with refreshing dips, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of our stay.

Friday Morning: Breakfast In Bed

The following morning, we indulged in an in-room breakfast service that epitomised luxury. The English breakfast was a hearty affair, with perfectly cooked eggs, crispy bacon, succulent sausages, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms. Each bite was a reminder of home.

The muesli, with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey, was a refreshing start to the day. Its crunchy texture and natural sweetness provided a perfect balance to the richer elements of our breakfast. The avocado toast was another highlight, featuring creamy, ripe avocados spread generously over crusty, artisanal bread, garnished with a sprinkle of sea salt and a hint of chilli flakes for a subtle kick.

Relaxation And Rejuvenation

After our sumptuous breakfast, we decided to explore the hotel's health facilities. I opted for a more tranquil experience – a relaxing massage at M|SPA. On arrival at the spa, I filled out a consultation form and Mia, my therapist, began with an oud foot scrub to set the tone for the treatment. I then experienced the 'Soul Revival Massage', a moment in time to remember, using my choice of expertly mixed Calm, Purity or Happiness aromatherapy body oils. The specifically blended ancient essential oils enlightened my mind, body and spirit, while the massage techniques helped me unwind completely. The staff were exceptionally welcoming, and the spa facilities were beautiful, providing a serene escape. I emerged feeling thoroughly relaxed and pampered. Meanwhile, my husband headed to the sauna, enjoying the soothing heat and the adjacent steam room with hints of eucalyptus. The gym, well-equipped with state-of-the-art machines, catered to all fitness levels. Later, we enjoyed the tranquil setting of the third floor swimming pool, basking in the natural sunlight and the peaceful atmosphere.

Friday Brunch: A Global Culinary Journey

After a relaxed morning, we headed to Le Colonial for brunch. The food showcased a mix of Asian, Indian, Latin American and traditional Arabic cuisines. The Spanish influence was evident with a colourful seafood paella, while the Latin offerings included zesty ceviche. The Indian section featured rich curries and aromatic biryanis. There was also a live rice and noodle

station that provided fragrant and comforting dishes.

Traditional Arabic dishes added local flair with mezze platters and succulent kebabs. The dessert selection was equally impressive, with a decadent chocolate fountain surrounded by fruits, marshmallows and pastries for dipping. Whipped ice cream in various flavours provided a refreshing end to the meal, leaving us utterly satisfied and content.

Friday Evening: La Cantina And Football Fever

That evening, we returned to Le Colonial for a different experience: La Cantina. This Latin food concept, predominantly Mexican, brought a lively and energetic atmosphere to the restaurant. The evening coincided with a football match between Germany and Spain, which added an electric charge to the air. Fans cheered and groaned with each play, creating a sense of camaraderie and excitement that was contagious.

The food mirrored the vibrant atmosphere, with dishes that were bold in flavour and generous in portion. The chicken wings were crispy and succulent, coated in a tangy sauce that left us licking our fingers in delight. Loaded nachos were a riot of textures and tastes, piled high with cheese, jalapenos, beans and a dollop of sour cream. The guacamole was fresh and creamy, perfectly seasoned and served with crunchy tortilla chips.

The combination of great food, an exhilarating match and the lively crowd made for an unforgettable evening. We left La Cantina feeling exhilarated, our spirits lifted by the joyous ambiance and the delectable dishes we had savoured.

Saturday Afternoon: Delightful Afternoon Tea At AtTEAtude

Our final treat was a perfect blend of sweet and savoury, featuring an assortment of dainty sandwiches, delicate cakes and traditional Arabic sweets. We indulged in classic scones, served with clotted cream and jam, alongside a selection of elegant pastries that satisfied our sweet tooth.

The beautifully arranged treats and the charming ambience provided the perfect way to conclude our visit.

A Memorable Stay

Indeed, the weekend could only be described as a seamless blend of luxury, comfort and culinary excellence. From the refined elegance of the Infinity Rooftop to the diverse and flavourful offerings at Le Colonial and Cila, each dining experience was a journey in itself. The health facilities also provided much-needed relaxation and rejuvenation, while the well-appointed rooms and attentive service ensured we continually felt pampered.

Whether it's the serene poolside moments, the indulgent inroom breakfast or the lively La Cantina evenings, each aspect of our stay was crafted with care and a keen eye for detail. We look forward to our next visit, knowing that Alwadi Hotel will once again welcome us to a perfect downtown haven. ✤

IN THE CLUB

Membership of an exclusive club, defined by the excellence of the yarns and the mastery of the workmanship, is the inspiration for Malo Cashmere’s SS24 collection

Seaside notes and holiday horizons are rendered with timeless elegance and effortlessly chic style invoking places where the evening breezes refresh tanned skin, calling for a light stole or sweater.

Born in Portofino, Italy, in the 1970s, Malo’s light, elegant, colourful cashmere remains the blend of choice for cooler summer evenings by the coast.

With notes of dusty blues and light sands, the collection’s nuances recall waves and endless skies coupled with warm browns, fresh whites, the green of Mediterranean scrub and the lilac of summer flowers.

Sweaters boast inlays, net wefts and sailor ropes creating interwoven effects and pieces in light cashmere and incredibly soft cotton are made with open and grainy weaves like beach mats. Pullovers are designed with irregular yacht stripes that recall the rippling of the waves on the horizon.

For him, the sea wolf jacket in double cashmere carries the button with the “à la marinière” theme which also enriches the deconstructed double-breasted women's jacket. Also, for men, the pea coat in superfine suede, lined with cotton, becomes the comfortable go-to for any occasion.

A slightly oversized, light cashmere garment and cotton trousers with cuffs at the ankle to protect from the sea are ideal whilst travelling. But once you've reached your destination, an unstructured jacket or a cashmere-silk sweater worn around the neck complete the more formal day look. Polo shirts with vertical stripes recall the deckchairs of the iconic ‘Le Club 55’ in

Saint Tropez. And there’s lots of linen, from jackets to trousers, from Bermuda shorts and garment dyed pieces, to shirts with cold dyeing for an aged effect.

For her, garments boast a holiday allure but with an everyday comfort, totally Made in Italy artisanal quality and a timeless style, with an Italian-French flavour. The collection offers a dressing gown coat in superfine double cashmere, in marine colours. A very light suede constructs a shirt-jacket and palazzo trousers. A sarong dress and large kaftans in garment-dyed habotai silk offer a super chic look. And knitwear develops as cashmere garments with a relaxed fit or a more feminine fit that follows the silhouette.

The sweaters and dresses feature side or shoulder openings, boat necklines on feminine and multifunctional fits, details that reveal the shoulders to the sun's rays. Super feminine polo shirts, dresses and bomber jackets with contrasting cuffs have been created in cablè cotton and there’s an abundance of linen and mulberry silk too. ✤

DISCO DIVA

The disco era is alive and well in Qatar with the arrival of a new group, Studio 974 (yes, it is inspired by that famous nightclub). We caught up with lead singer Raelene Gibson, to get the lowdown on the band.

Studio 974 is described as a disco band. Can you explain the concept and where the idea and name came from?

Disco is experiencing a resurgence in popularity with tunes all over social media, and its steady four-on-thefloor beat makes it impossible to sit still to. Our band leader and bass player, Tom Kirkwood, wanted to start a band that filled a niche and guaranteed people to get on the dance floor and have a good time. Disco was the obvious choice! And so was the name Studio 974, which gives a nod to both Studio 54, the famous and exclusive disco club from 1970s’ New York City, and our home here in Doha, by using the Qatar country code.

Is this a genre that you’re particular fans of?

Absolutely, we love disco! It’s great fun to play and we love rehearsing as much as we do playing live … almost! In this first year of Studio 974, we have focused on the ‘70s and ‘80s disco classics, the ones you know all the words to as well as those whose title you can’t place but that get you on your feet before the bass finishes its first riff. We have a few funk and modern disco songs in the current set list and, in the future, you can expect us to explore dance music from other eras.

Who else is in the band and what do they do/play?

Our six-piece band spans five continents. Our bass riffmaster Tom is from Scotland. On funky guitar is Jess Justo from the Philippines. Our piano and keyboard player, David Praiseworth, covering everything from horns to strings, is from Nigeria. Nathan ‘Mambo Diablo’ Townsend hails from Australia and plays the congas, bongos and trumpet. John Drury is the glue; he comes from the United States and is our drummer. And I am from Canada, on lead vocals and all things sequins. Everyone joins in on backing vocals – even the audience: Sunshine, moonlight, good times, blame it on the boogie!

How has Studio 974 been received so far?

It has been truly amazing! The band, concept, name and music have been so well received. It’s incredible to see so many smiling, singing, dancing and happy people at gigs. What more could you ask for? We have played in a variety of venues so far in our short time, but the most iconic is our trademark ‘Disco Dhow’, which is already taking bookings for November.

Tell us about Doha’s live music scene.

Doha’s live music scene has exploded from its early grassroots of a handful of bands to the thriving scene we have today. Studio 974 love being a part of this community and plan to keep entertaining Doha over the next few years. If you need an excuse to get out the platform shoes, sequins and mirror ball, message us on IG @studio974.qa to discuss bookings. Lastly, we send a big thanks to you, FACT, for showcasing the amazing talent in Doha and to the music fans who support live music.

Where can readers see you next?

You can find us right now on Instagram. As for live gigs, we’re currently on summer break and will be back in late August. You’ll find us playing at the Shamrock and other venues around town. Follow us on IG to get updates about gigs and other Studio 974 news. ✤

The Boys The Bear

Need to Know:

Dark days are ahead as Victoria Neuman finds herself edging closer to reaching the Oval Office. And Homelander continues to build influence among the general public appealing to their worst instincts. The stakes are higher than ever for Butcher and the crew to save the world before it’s too late.

Creators: Eric Kripke

Cast: Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The Boys are well and truly back in town! As the fourth season of the show continues the absolute rollercoaster of a plot picks right back up where it left us at the end of last season. Having begrudgingly worked together to handle the greater threat that was Soldier Boy, archenemies Butcher (Karl Urban) and Homelander (Antony Starr) are back to bitterly hating each other. But this time, the drama gets even more shocking with Homelander realising that his current team, The Seven, aren’t half as good as they used to be. That’s when he unexpectedly recruits Sister Sage (known for being the smartest person on the planet) to join them. Things then start to take a sinister turn as her nefarious ideas are put into action.

Meanwhile, despite being on the verge of his demise due to abusing Compound V, Butcher finds himself even more determined to permanently take down Homelander and the rest of the Supes even if it’s the last thing he does. Buckle up as things are about to get even more weird!

The Bear Season 3 serves up another heaping plate of kitchen drama with a generous side of family dysfunction and several splashes of intensely joyful and distressing moments.”

Need to Know:

The Bear is a multiple Emmy-award winning American comedy-drama series. Carmen ‘Carmy’ Anthony Berzatto along with chef Sydney Adamu and the accidentality talented crew at The Beef have somehow managed to transform their hole-in-the-wall restaurant into a fine-dining establishment. But things are far from staying on track as they find themselves facing numerous new challenges.

Creator: Christopher Storer

Cast : Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza ColónZayas, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Returning after the outstanding Season 2 (which I personally consider among the best seasons of a TV show I’ve had the pleasure of viewing), The Bear Season 3 serves up another heaping plate of kitchen drama with a generous side of family dysfunction and several splashes of intensely joyful and distressing moments.

Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is doing his best to keep his fancy new joint afloat but seems to be slowly unravelling under the immense pressure to keep things running smoothly. Then, on the other hand, his scruffy crew attempt to do their best while fumbling through fine dining like a bunch of bulls in a china shop.

On the surface the show does quite well building up the anxiety with the exceedingly tense scenes that do their best to portray the insanity that occurs behind the doors of a tightly run Michelin-star level restaurant.

But where the show truly shines is its nuance and the raw authentic feel with which it portrays the humanity of its characters, while handling topics like past traumas, personal demons, regrets, hope, love and more.

ON THE RECORD

RAP R&B ROCK

Bando Stone and the New World

POP

THRILLER, SUSPENSE

Worst Case Scenario

The latest offering from this relatively new author, and former flight attendant, who has taken the publishing world by storm in recent years.

A full-scale crisis ensues after a commercial airline pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet and his plane, filled with passengers, crashes into a nuclear power plant in small-town USA.

In this heart-stopping thriller, ordinary people – power plant employees, firefighters, teachers, families, neighbours and friends – are thrust into an extraordinary situation as they face the ultimate test of their lives.

The multifaceted talents of Donald Glover range from standup to acting and writing (30 Rock, Community, Atlanta and the recent Mr. & Mrs. Smith series) and then prominent music projects (most notably 2013’s Because the Internet and 2016’s Awaken, My Love!). All of which make his contributions in the art and entertainment realms nothing short of remarkable! And now with Bando Stone and the New World, he releases his fifth and final studio album under his Childish Gambino moniker.

The album opens with a maddening Yeezus-style industrial hip-hop number on H3@RT$ W3RE M3@NT T0 F7¥. He then steps outside his comfort zone and tries his hand at a mini rock opera on the strikingly theatrical Lithonia Survive is equal parts electro and smooth jazz in the best ways and fades out with a pleasing saxophone outro. While Steps Beach exemplifies a calm dreaminess with Donald’s swooning falsetto. Real Love and Yoshinoya are two other favourites but sound nothing alike in any way.

Also, the album doubles as the soundtrack to an upcoming dystopian survival movie of the same name, that’s written and acted in by Donald.

Charm is the captivating third studio album by Clairo. It marks her debut as an independent artist following her previous releases with Fader and Republic. She teams up with Leon Michels on production for this project, crafting a collection of sincere and heartfelt songs.

The journey begins with Nomad, a contemplative track that reflects on the complexities of relationships. Next, Sexy To Some dives into the allure of new encounters, exploring the dynamics of desire and being desired with a mix of mystery and longing.

In Slow Dance, Clairo's ethereal vocals float effortlessly, creating a dreamy, carefree atmosphere. On Juna, a personal favourite, Clario is at her best, her delivery here is intimate and soft as if whispering right into your ear. Her recent live rendition on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, is worth watching if only to just see her imitate a trumpet on that beautiful outro!

Echo offers a psychedelic twist with its spacey synths and Clairo’s hypnotic, droning vocals. The album concludes with Glory Of The Snow, a wintry homage to the support and love she’s received, rounding out the album with a touch of warmth and gratitude.

MURDER MYSTERY

I Need You To Read This

The perfect summer whodunnit from the New York Times bestselling author of The Golden Spoon sees coprwriter Alex Marks unexpectedly grab her dream job, replacing her murdered childhood hero, agony aunt Francis Keen.

Soon, Alex is receiving threatening notes at the office and delving far deeper into the, thus far, unsolved murder than is, perhaps, sensible. Drawn into the details surrounding her predecessor’s murder, Alex’s own dark secrets begin to rise to the surface and she finds herself trapped in a dangerous and potentially deadly game of cat and mouse.

Charm

VINTAGE VIBES

SD stepped back in time for a luxurious massage experience at Ned’s Club Spa.

Ned’s Club Spa at The Ned Doha is nothing short of extraordinary. Located on the fourth floor, as soon as I step out of the wooden-walled elevator, I feel as if I've entered a time warp. The spa entrance throws me into a cosy, vintage and welcoming space with artwork that immediately catches my eye. Masterpieces of different eras – there are abstract pieces with local flair and classic paintings with contemporary touches. The mosaic floors are captivating, reflecting the warm glow from a massive chandelier that gently clinks producing a mesmerising hum, as I walk past to make myself known to the receptionist.

This is not your classic spa entrance, there's a gorgeous wooden console with books and table lamps on either side. There’s plenty to keep your eyes busy and for a few moments, I forget I'm here for a massage. The interiors really take you back in time. This almost reminds me of those clubs in the 1970s and ‘80s, at which only select members of society were allowed to enrol. The menthol scent in the air is what gives it away. I'm not in the ‘70s, I'm very much in an exquisitely constructed space, in 2024. The receptionist introduces me to Nidya, my therapist for the evening. She is all smiles and escorts me through a long corridor, straight into a vanity room. This wellness area is almost a hidden gem. Decked in 1970s’ glam and oozing retro charm, the vanity area is perfect for a little self-loving. Arrive a bit early to spend some time here.

I explore the venue more before heading to my treatment room. The space feels indulgent and exclusive. With three treatment

rooms, steam, sauna and a traditional Moroccan Hammam that's as warm as it is aesthetic, Ned's Club Spa is easily the best way to get in an entire afternoon of relaxation.

I decide to try the 60-minute Signature Massage (there is a 90-minute option too), a treatment using aromatherapy oils from high-quality brand Cowshed. The therapy is perfect for me, as it focuses on specific problem areas. With tense shoulders and painful feet, I ask my therapist to give those spots a little extra TLC. She presents me with an extensive selection of oils – and encourages me to inhale each one before making my final choice. Should I go for an invigorating combination of lemongrass, ginger and rosemary? Or pick something more subtle but effective like the Bracing Body Oil with hemp, sweet orange and clove. I must have

discovered around six or seven incredible scents before settling on a calming mixture of lavender, eucalyptus and camomile.

I lie face down as she adjusts the head rest and elevates it as I comfortably place my face into it. The bed is cosy and warm, and I'm ready to let Nidya take me on an aromatic journey of relaxation. She starts by wrapping a hot towel around my feet, finding the pressure points and firmly pressing against them. She moves to my shoulders next, the troubled area, starting with gentle strokes and then kneading firmly into my muscles. I feel a slight discomfort at first, but the relaxation slowly starts to set in. And then every painful push feels delightful.

The medium pressure massage continues over the rest of my body and she finally concludes with a dry scalp massage. The scent of the amazing aromatherapy oil from Cowshed fills the room, as light music plays in the background and with dim lighting, I enter a complete state of relaxation. My muscles feel renewed and my entire body feels as though it's sinking into the softness of the massage bed. It's an incredible feeling, and I have

Nidya to thank for this. She's experienced in alleviating stress by really manipulating those muscles and pressure points. She lets me know the treatment has concluded after an hour and leaves the room for me to get changed. There's a shower and changing room right here, and the bathroom is so well set up –with mosaic floors that really feel like home.

I get changed and spend some time in the relaxation area. I highly recommend always taking some time to sit back after your treatment to just take it all in. Nidya prepares a lemongrass tea for me, while I look at some amazing panoramic views of Doha from here.

This is the perfect end to an evening of full body rejuvenation –The Ned Doha really does it better. ✤

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Feline Frenzy

We really didn’t want to do it. We promised ourselves, no commenting on the US election – it’s too painful! And we figured the social media post declaring ‘The rest of the world is watching America like America watched Tiger King’, pretty much said it all as we looked on in dumbfounded horror. But then came JD Vance and his tonedeaf, derogatory comments about childless cat ladies running (and ruining) America. The presumptive Republican Vice Presidential candidate had been named only a matter of hours when his comments from a 2021 interview resurfaced and boy has he put the cat

among the pigeons.

A study by The Boston Globe calculated that America currently has 46 million, single-person, cat-owning households. And the memes, oh the social media memes over recent days have been absolutely joyous. Many of them feature the ultimate cat lady herself, Taylor Swift – single, childless cat owner with 283 million Instagram followers, along with another 32.8 million on TikTok and 95 million on X (formerly Twitter).

Sheesh, is that the sound of back pedalling we hear?

A Doggy Tale Pound of Flesh

We’re big fans of Marvel here in the FACT office. Particularly Deadpool and Wolverine – the characters, not the movie. Shockingly, we weren’t invited to the premiere, so we haven’t seen it yet. But what’s not to love about Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman ribbing each other mercilessly at every opportunity? And now we have even more reason to love this pair – enter stage left, Dogpool, AKA Mary Puppins. The new film is set to make a star (or should that be an even bigger star?) of a tiny, mixed-breed mutt who capture’s Deadpool’s heart and joins him on a journey through the multiverse.

Aside from Reynolds and Jackman, we’re also big fans of all things canine and have long been a little disturbed at the idea of Britain’s Ugliest Dog contest. But, it seems Dogpool, or Peggy as she is otherwise known, came to director Shwan Levy’s attention having triumphed in the competition and, after a little on-set training, proved to be a natural. The little pooch has really taken to the star treatment and even walked the red carpet like a pro at the film’s world premiere in New York. Seems it’s a dog’s life.

Like many others around the region, the FACT team is made up of relentless F1 enthusiasts. We all have our favourite drivers and race days bring a certain frisson to the office. But, we have to admit, the sport has lost some of its sparkle in recent years with young Verstappen seemingly having it all his own way – nice for him but somewhat boring for the rest of us. So, this season’s cut and thrust has been refreshing with Mercedes AMG Petronas, McLaren, Ferrari and others piling on the pressure – and somewhat exposing the Red Bull champion’s temper tantrums along the way.

There was jubilation last weekend as

Mercedes seemingly took the one-two spots at Spa with George Russell in first and Sir Lewis Hamilton in second (though there were some who wondered if Lewis might be regretting his decision to don the iconic red suit of Ferrari next year).

That quickly turned to heartbreak for young Englishman Russell with news of his disqualification. It turned out his car was underweight at the conclusion of the race. It was only 1.5kg but, of course, in a high-stakes, big-money sport like F1, rules are rules. But, we couldn’t help thinking, we could gain that with just one good old English breakfast!
