Happy Holidays

“Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie.”—Jim Davis

T

his month we’re all about the festive season. From Qatar National Day to Christmas and the New Year, you’ll find details of the best dining and dancing deals for all three in our comprehensive listings pages. We know that this is the time of year for gifting and, if you’re

struggling on what to get that special someone or are stumped for ideas for the office Secret Santa, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with something fun for everyone from your significant other to the family pet. Woof! Of course, we haven’t neglected our readers to who don’t celebrate. Looking for a new motor? Check out our test drive and news pages, the new Ferrari looks just up our street. The December dining section has gone into overdrive with words of wisdom from two exceptional chefs as well as five, count them, five food reviews! At this rate we’ll hardly have room for all the special feasts to come throughout the month but, truly, how could we say no? I think it’s safe to say that Team Fact Qatar is more than satiated at the moment. We also took in some much-needed spa relaxation and watched with envy as our colleagues jetted off to the Maldives to bring you a taste of paradise. The fashion section features a festive photoshoot from one of our favourite designers and, as always, we have our roundups of books and music (you might be a little surprised by this one) and lots of new beauty and grooming products for you to try. Festive, shmestive – to be honest I’d like to ignore it now until the big days arrive. But, of course, I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a Happy National Day, Merry Christmas and all the very best for 2022. Bring it on!

F

rom new restaurants opening on every corner to hangouts dedicated to particular cuisines, Instagrammable food spots and new pop-ups, it seems that flavour and food has never been so important to Qatar. Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) is proof, a not-to-be-missed, high-flying culinary event that is paving the way for a new wave of pop-ups and restaurants. The best of the best on the Qatar culinary scene have come together under the stars at Al Bidda Park. Vendors from Doha, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and international markets are also taking part. QIFF, organised and delivered by Qatar Tourism, is ongoing till December 17 and the number of participants has increased considerably with thousands of attendees, food enthusiasts and professionals. The festival is split across five themed zones at Al Bidda Park and one at the Corniche. QIFF is staging a daily cooking theatre with at least two demonstrations, events and competitions every day. The cooking theatres will feature celebrity chefs from the region and beyond including Dani García, Aisha Al Tamimi, Shams Al-Qassabi, William Dissen and Saif Rahman, Hervé Courtot, Hassan Al Ibrahim, Grenal Godinho, Aleksandre Ugrekhelidze, Arturo Mendez, Roberto Reatini, Aaj Fernando, Sergio Galaz, Hari Wahyudin and Santiago Guerrero. 8

The festival is also featuring Chefs’ Tables giving diners the opportunity to sit and eat with the chef who has cooked their meal. Restaurants, including Hakkasan, Scalini, Riyasat and Isaan are joining in. The presence of a diverse selection of cuisines is promising enough to bring the people of Qatar together savouring the flavours of East and West. This year QIFF is not only centred on food lovers but is also shining a spotlight on locally owned coffee shops, adding the aroma and rich flavour of the beans throughout the festival. Qatar Tourism has also announced the launch of a ‘World Class Chefs’ project, a two-year initiative whereby renowned chefs from around the world will be hosted in Qatar. This aims to take the country's world-class dining experiences to the next level, supporting the hospitality sector and facilitating investment opportunities in the food and beverage sector. QIFF is open on weekdays from 3pm to 11pm and on weekends from 3pm to 1am. ✤

JEFF KOONS NOW IN QATAR The exhibition Jeff Koons: Lost in America is the renowned American artist’s first in the Gulf region and is presented as part of the Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture programme. Qatar Museums recently launched Jeff Koons: Lost in America at the QM Gallery Al Riwaq, the expansive exhibition space located in the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park. On view until March 31, 2022, and organised by renowned curator Massimiliano Gioni, Koons’ first exhibition in the region provides a unique view into his exceptional career as one of the best-known contemporary artists, whose work bridges pop, minimalism and the readymade. Jeff Koons: Lost in America is part of #QatarCreates 2021, two weeks of cultural exchange, dialogue and collaboration at the forefront of art, architecture, fashion, design, and digital culture, as well as the Qatar-United States 2021 Year of Culture, an international cultural exchange designed to deepen understanding between the nations and their people. Lost in America presents a portrait of American culture as seen through Koons’ autobiography, beginning with his childhood in suburban Pennsylvania. The exhibition features more than 60 artworks drawn from his four-decade-long career and is divided into 16 galleries, each introduced by an autobiographical text by the artist, emphasising his memories, influences and fascination with American visual culture. Conceived as an expansive selfportrait, the exhibition also includes sculptures and paintings with mesmerising, mirrored surfaces that reflect the viewer and call attention to notions of self-transformation and becoming. Sheikha Reem al-Thani, Acting Deputy CEO of Exhibitions and Marketing, Qatar Museums, said: “Qatar Museums is pleased to organise and present Jeff Koons: Lost in America, providing our community and visitors to Doha with access to Koons' first exhibition in the Gulf region. Part of Qatar Museums' mission is to encourage cultural exchange and dialogue through the presentations of many of the world’s most influential artists. This exhibition—a highlight of Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture—offers a unique view of Koons' artworks that are an often-playful reflection of his observations and commentary on American culture.” 10

fact magazine

“I am honoured as an American artist to represent my country during the Year of Culture between Qatar and the United States,” said Koons. “I have had amazing opportunities over the last two decades to visit Qatar, seeing its sites and cultural institutions and meeting some of its people. For me, it’s a dream come true for this exhibition to be part of the cultural exchange between Qatar and the United States. I am very grateful to Qatar Museums for inviting me to participate.” Some of Koons’ best-known works are represented from series such as The New (1980–1987), Banality (1988), Celebration (1994–), Popeye (2002–2013) and Antiquity (2008–), alongside more recent works shown for the first time during this special exhibition. In Koons’ paintings and sculptures, including some of the artist’s most iconic pieces such as Rabbit (1986), Balloon Dog (Orange) (1994–2000) and Play-Doh (1994–2014), everyday objects and industrial materials are transformed into engaging artworks that pose questions about desire and hope, the self and transcendence, individuality, and the masses. ✤

LEARNING ABOUT FIFA’S WORLD CUP LEGACY SC’s educational platform Tamreen is building excitement among students ahead of Qatar 2022. The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) has announced new updates to Tamreen, an online educational platform it launched in partnership with the Ministry of Education & Higher Education (MOEHE) to help students develop core skills while learning about the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Tamreen is an interactive platform which offers toolkits to help students aged eight to 18 develop skills in core curriculum areas while gaining an understanding of the SC’s development goals and the legacy of Qatar 2022. Students, educators and parents can benefit from a range of educational resources, including games, videos, quizzes and infographics, designed specifically with young people in mind. Khalid al-Mawlawi, the SC’s Chief of Tournament Experience, said Tamreen carries forward the SC’s commitment to include youth in plans and preparations for the mega-event. “Part of our mission at the SC is to inspire Qatar's future leaders using the power of the World Cup,” said Khalid “Through Tamreen, we have been able to involve youth in our plans and help them understand the important legacy Qatar 2022 will leave for the country, the region and the world. Tamreen also helps to boost excitement for the tournament, which is now only one year away.” 12

fact magazine

Fawzia Abdulaziz al-Khater, Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs at MOEHE, said: “Tamreen has played an active role in igniting young people’s passion and enthusiasm for the World Cup. Most importantly, we’ve been able to communicate important features of the tournament and the SC’s legacy programmes, all the while meeting the educational goals that schools, teachers and parents in Qatar aspire to achieve.” The 25 toolkits, which are available through Tamreen’s new website, cover a range of topics about the FIFA World Cup, including legacy, sustainability and accessibility. The refreshed platform will offer opportunities for schools to get special recognition based on their online activity and provide students a chance to showcase their skills and creativity through various competitions. Since its launch in March 2019, Tamreen has registered more than 200 governmental and 20 private schools in its programme. Aligned with the national curriculum, the toolkits cover core subject areas, including mathematics, science, Arabic, English, social studies and art. ✤

QATAR’S AMAZING EIGHT Every tournament venue – including Lusail Stadium – has been completed as the country marks less than a year to go until the big kick-off of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. With exactly one year to go until the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world, Qatar has proudly completed construction work at all eight tournament venues. The finishing touches were recently applied to Lusail Stadium – the 80,000-capacity venue that will host next year’s final on December 18. To celebrate the one-year-to-go milestone, we take a closer look at the eight amazing stadiums that will host the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Qatar 2022: Al Janoub will stage seven matches up to the round of 16 stage. Education City Stadium Located in Education City, home of Qatar Foundation, the stadium’s façade features triangles that form complex, diamondlike geometrical patterns which appear to change colour with the sun’s movement across the sky. Qatar 2022: Education City will stage eight matches up to the quarter-finals stage.

Khalifa International Stadium The first tournament-ready venue for Qatar 2022, Khalifa International has a long history of hosting major sporting events since 1976. Serving as Qatar’s national stadium, the venue underwent extensive redevelopment in order to prepare it for the FIFA World Cup. Qatar 2022: The stadium will host eight matches up to and including the third-place play-off.

Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium Located in the city of Al Rayyan, the stadium was built on the site of the old venue – also named Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium – with many of the materials from the deconstructed venue being used in the new project. Qatar 2022: Ahmad Bin Ali will host seven matches up to the round of 16 stage.

Al Janoub Stadium Located in Al Wakrah, Al Janoub Stadium was the first Qatar 2022 venue to be built from scratch. The stadium’s design is inspired by the sails of traditional dhow boats, in tribute to Al Wakrah’s seafaring past. Built with an innovative cooling system and retractable roof, the venue can be used all year round.

Al Thumama Stadium Qatari architect Ibrahim M. Jaidah’s inspiration for the design of Al Thumama Stadium was the ‘gahfiya’ – a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East. Qatar 2022: Al Thumama will stage eight matches up to the quarter-finals.

Al Bayt Stadium Located in Al Khor, the spectacular Al Bayt Stadium takes its inspiration from ‘bayt al sha’ar’ – which were tents historically used by nomadic peoples in Qatar and the Gulf region. Qatar 2022: Al Bayt will stage nine matches up to the semi-finals stage. This includes the opening match of the tournament.

Lusail Stadium Located in Lusail City, the stadium is Qatar’s largest tournament venue. The design is inspired by the interplay of light and shadow that characterises the 'fanar' lantern. Progress: The stadium has been completed and will be inaugurated in 2022. Qatar 2022: Lusail will host 10 matches during every stage of Qatar 2022, including the final. ✤

Board Not Bored Cards Against Humanity Cardsagainsthumanity.com OK, we looked at lots of new games for this one but, to be honest, we couldn’t find anything to beat Cards Against Humanity – which describes itself as ‘a party game for horrible people’. Having played it (possibly more than once) we can attest that this is true and would highly recommend it. It used to be adults only but there’s now a Family Edition which makes us quite scared but sounds like great fun.

Budding Chefs AMT Cookware qatar.desertcart.com The family who cooks together will love these top-of-the-range pans by AMT, said by numerous chefs and professional culinary associations to be the best in the world. Each pan and piece of cookware is created using a hand-casting method and is subject to strict quality control. Thus a relaxed structure without pores is created. This structure provides the foundation for a distortion-free base, which makes for energy-efficient cooking.

Good Gaming Yard Dice by Jeremy Exley uncommongoods.com We love these oversized dice that are ideal for bringing family and friends together, specially since the weather is perfect for getting outdoors. Each die is handmade from solid pine, so every one is different. And they come in a handy drawstring bag with rules for four different games. We’ll see you on the beach. 24

THE NEW

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE L

The world’s most celebrated SUV delivers a new level of performance with its latest revamp. 38

fact magazine

CITY RIDES •

J

eep is celebrating 80 years of 4x4 leadership and innovation with the launch of the all-new Grand Cherokee L. This reimagining of the most awarded SUV of all time is sure to put a smile on the faces of SUV lovers and off-road enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the outstanding team at United Cars Al-Mana, FACT magazine received the opportunity to carefully inspect and test-drive this latest model, an experience we won’t soon forget. First up, the exterior. Jeep have taken inspiration from their first full-sized luxury SUV, the original Wagoneer. Despite the 3,091mm wheelbase of this vehicle, the L’s profile is slender in nature, emphasised by its elongated hood and cab. The forward tipping grille further highlights the length of the bonnet and is complemented by a full suite of LED lighting. This lighting setup is fitted as standard on all trim levels and includes ultra slim headlamps, slim horizontal fog lamps with unique signature lighting, as well as ultra slim tail lamps. The roof has been both lowered and tapered to ensure maximum aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency, without sacrificing any important cargo space. Upon entering the vehicle, we were greeted by a next-generation interior, boasting opulent colours, handcrafted materials and

modern amenities. We found all features in the cabin to be most impressive including the 16-way adjustable seating with lumbar support and the multifunction steering wheel that feels just right in hand. All control features have been perfectly placed for optimum performance and convenience, whilst the design and quality of the dashboard is truly outstanding. The centre stack has been realigned to ensure accessibility for the driver, with an illuminated element framing the 10.1-inch display for the Unconnect 5 system. Additionally, a 10.25-inch frameless digital gauge cluster has also been included in the setup, allowing the user easy access to driver-assist technologies and other vehicle information. Despite this system including nearly two dozen different menus, we found it easy to navigate, intuitive and most informative. The system has a fully customisable home screen and is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Grand Cherokee L is the first three-row vehicle produced by Jeep. This spacious SUV is a genuine seven-seater, able to comfortably fit up to seven adults. The second-row door openings are larger than previous models, with the doors themselves able to open to 64-degrees. An ingress/egress exterior side step has also been fitted for your convenience. The third row features a 50/50 split and can be folded via an electronic remote release in fact magazine

39

• CITY RIDES the rear cargo area. The volume of the boot is 1,328 litres, which can be increased up to 2,396 litres with all seating folded flat. Although both the exterior and interior design of the L are impressive, its performance capabilities are what truly set this car apart from the rest of the pack. Upon first inspection one may think this SUV is a little on the large side, a factor that could affect performance. This, however, could not be further from the truth. This all-new model is equipped with the all-aluminium, 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine. With 293 horsepower and 353Nm of torque, this engine produces more than enough power for all terrain, whilst continuously aiding fuel consumption. The powertrain combined with a class-exclusive Quadra-Lift Air Suspension, a highly effective braking system and advanced traction control, ensures this model is an absolute joy to drive and we always felt in complete control of the experience. Upon venturing off-road, we found the Grand Cherokee L’s class-leading Selec-Terrain traction management system to be extremely useful, allowing us to smoothly switch between five terrain modes including Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow and Mud/ Sand. No matter the terrain, the L made short work of any and all geographical challenges we put in its way. Jeep have incorporated more than 110 safety and security features in the all-new L. These include innovative applications of technologies that refine the connection between the driver, the vehicle and the road. These features include Full-Speed Collision Warning, Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist, Night Vision Camera, Rear Cross Path detection, Active Lane Management, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning, Advanced Brake Assist, Blind-spot Monitoring, ParkSense rear park assist sensors, tyrepressure monitoring, a Drowsy Driver Detection system as well as Traffic Sign Recognition amongst many others. So, what else can we say? If you are looking to purchase a superior 4x4 seven-seater SUV that not only looks great and drives well, but keeps you and your loved ones safe, you should definitely give this a try. ✤

NEW MATE ON THE MARKET Huawei take centre stage in the mid-sized laptop segment with the new MateBook 14.

T

hese days, laptops come in a wide variety of options, often making it confusing for those looking to buy a new device. FACT magazine is on a mission to review and reveal the very best laptops available on the market today in order to take some of the headache out of your selection process. This month we got our hands on the new MateBook 14, the latest laptop offering from tech giants HUAWEI. The first thing we have to mention about the sleek and stylish MateBook 14 is its superb 2K eye-comfort, 14-inch FullView HD display with a 2160x1440 resolution. This combined with a 90% screen-to-body ratio ensures a laptop experience that is very easy on the eye in more ways than one. We found the performance of the MateBook 14 to be very smooth and solid, thanks to the 11th Generation Intel Core processor and other Super Device Features. Backing up this performance is an 8GB dual-channel RAM and 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD, meaning users have plenty of storage space. A 56Wh high-capacity battery with supercharge support works together with Huawei’s smart power management system allowing you to enjoy up to 11 hours of battery life on a single full charge. The new and improved Shark Fin cooling system ensures your device always stays at the optimum temperature, whilst a 65W USB Type-C power adapter with support for multiple power output is included as standard. We love the way in which the new MateBook 14 is compatible with many other Huawei devices. For example, you can wirelessly project the 12.6-inch HUAWEI MatePad Pro to the MateBook 14 to form a Tablet-PC Multiscreen Collaboration that offers three different modes namely Mirror, Extend and Collaborate. This helps to bridge the gap between Windows and Android operating systems, enabling seamless cross-device collaboration, file sharing 44

and multi-screen control. Other devices compatible with this process are the HUAWEI Nova 8 that can be connected to the MateBook 14 to form a powerful Super Device, and the HUAWEI MateView that can be connected to the MateBook 14 via cable to provide an extra screen. This trio setup allows for the easy swapping of wireless and wired connections, allowing you to easily switch between work and personal modes. All-in-all we have to sing the MateBook 14’s praises as we found the entire experience to be both an enjoyable and informative one. Huawei have definitely produced a top contender in the midsized range segment. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.HUAWEI.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

SEEING STARS Huawei’s trendy new flagship model and camera king is set to take the market by storm.

W

hen it comes to purchasing a new smartphone, the process can be a little daunting. With so many brands and models available in the market, where do you even begin searching for the perfect device to suit your needs, especially if you are not particularly tech-savvy? At FACT magazine we have made it our mission to try out some of the latest and greatest smartphones and to deliver our findings to you, our readers. This month we set our eyes on the Huawei Nova 9, a new device that is already drawing a lot of attention. The Nova 9, housing the EMUI 12 smart operating system and a powerful camera setup with all-new videography features, is the latest flagship device from Huawei. Design wise, it is only 7.77mm thick with a weight of 175g. The phone comes in two colour options namely black and the new Colour No.9 colourway, a lowsaturation bluish purple finish, created especially for this phone through an all-new Starry Flash AG Glass process. The Nova 9 features a Nebula-inspired Star Orbit Ring, along with a crystal clear, 16.68cm, 120Hz curved display with tapered surface. This stunning screen can display 1.07 billion colours and features a refresh rate of up to 120Hz as well as a 300Hz touch sampling rate, ensuring a super smooth experience for all, including ardent mobile gamers. In short, we found this new Huawei smartphone to be stylish, lightweight, responsive and an absolute pleasure to operate. 46

fact magazine

The camera setup, however, is where this smartphone really begins to shine. The rear camera system includes a 50MP Ultra Vision Camera, an 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera, a 2MP Depth Camera and a Macro Camera, allowing you to capture as close as 4cm. Geared for vlogging, both front and rear cameras support 4K shooting at 30fps making it easy to shoot short videos for social media. This combined with the Nova 9’s XD Fusion Engine ensures high quality capturing each and every time. We found the 32MP front camera great for taking selfies as well as for video shooting. There are also loads of AI effects and filters available for use that we found to be very functional and entertaining. The most novel feature of the camera setup is in fact, a world first. Continuous Front/Rear Recording allows you to switch between the front and rear cameras within a single video file, meaning you don’t have to stop recording to change cameras. Dual-View Video recording enables users to capture highdefinition footage whilst talking to the camera, as well as to capture a close-up shot and a wide angle shot at the same time with no editing required. With loads of other impressive features associated with this smartphone, including the excellent battery life that takes only 38 minutes to fully charge, we believe you simply can’t go wrong with the outstanding new Huawei Nova 9. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.HUAWEI.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

A pet is part of the family and it’s really important to keep track of your dog. DogLog is an easy-touse app that contributes to making pet ownership a lot less worrisome. The app also includes a ton of features, advice, step-by-step tutorials, videos, interactive quizzes and more. And it allows you to form a group with fellow dog caretakers and set up reminders and alerts to help take care of your pet, including medication timings if needed. DogLog uses statistics and AI to get insights on the dog’s lifestyle and provides an option to export data directly to the vet. The app is also great for dog walkers and pet sitting. The daily activity log, includes timings for food, treats, walk, pee, teeth brushing, grooming, training and medicine along with an option of custom reminders. If you have more than one pet at home, you can create multiple profiles and store all your vet records with vet appointments and reminders.

With so many photography and photo editing apps available, it is quite difficult to select one. But to shoot and edit with a single app can be a plus, instead of shooting the footage and then exporting it to the app separately. ViewBug provides the option of taking footage in the app and then editing it with video editing tools. It also connects the user with other worldwide photographers and videographers giving a platform to view and share the work. Others can also comment and give you a positive feedback. Also, when you’re on the discover page, looking at other people’s photography and work, the app gives an option to learn all the important things of the photograph you’re viewing such as equipment used, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, tags and location.

In Conversation with… Julien Gonzalvez The General Manager of Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha opens up about hospitality and culture.

5 OVER 5 •

Please share your experience of travelling around the world in the hospitality industry. My career has taken me around the world, including comprehensive experience in upper-upscale and luxury Hyatt properties in the UK, Australia, Asia and finally the Middle East. Among some of my achievements was being part of the opening team of the iconic Park Hyatt Saigon and I most recently opened the luxury Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi and Residences Emirates Pearl. Where do you draw your inspiration? Were there any mentors who influenced the way you work and think? I grew up in a hotel, it was my playground during my younger years which is where I grew passion for this industry. I have always wanted to travel and start my career overseas. Being able to work with different people has taught me to learn a lot of things. My mentors were my superiors in Hyatt Hotels. I have been with the company for 25 years and many great and creative people have influenced me today with the way I think and work. Tell us about your cultural background and what’s it like being a host at home? Are there any traditions you follow when welcoming guests into your own house? I have been away from my home country for so long and have spent most of my years in Asia. I can say that Asians are hospitable by default, very welcoming and gracious in manners. Rich in culture too!

I have no traditions when welcoming guests, everyone has their own way of doing so and my way is to welcome them with great food and company. Can you share with us a day in the life of one of your hotels? What makes an international hotel like yours tick? Being the General Manager means I am the first salesperson of the hotel. Normal days for me are meeting the guests, ensuring that their stay with us is smooth-sailing and every requirement is met. I also check that the property is in good shape and operations are working well. As much as I take care of our guests, I also make sure that our purpose of care for associates is taken care of, so they can be their best. Through listening, noticing their needs and extending meaningful gestures. Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha is an iconic landmark in the vibrant and bustling city of Doha. We have been operating for a year now and I know the hotel will be a shining star among the Hyatt properties in the country. With the planned hotel renovation in the pipeline, where I will be leading combined with a truly dynamic team, I am confident that we are going to deliver guest experiences that will make Hyatt and the city of Doha very proud. What advice would you give for someone aspiring to a career in the hospitality sector? Hospitality is a fantastic industry to meet different cultures, be ready to challenge yourself. Every day is a new day. Be passionate. ✤ fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

Do you remember the first time you prepared something in the kitchen and knew this was your calling? It was an absolute joy when I first started in the kitchen, blending many flavours to make a dish, and presenting it in so many versatile ways. The cooking technique and process was always the challenging part of my career, but I loved the creativity of flavours from day one. These challenges have significantly contributed to developing my passion for food every day, since I had to highly focus on my skills in the kitchen while being guided by the chef, to craft beautiful creations, perfecting each recipe, every step of the way. With Asian-inspired cuisine becoming more prevalent throughout the industry, where do you find flavour inspiration to elevate your dishes and make them stand out amongst the crowd? I first learnt from my mother the art of Asian cuisine and its distinguished flavours, as well as the very specific cooking techniques particular to this cuisine. It was amazing to watch her prepare food after I came home from school. In my home country, we have so many cultural celebrations that are centred around food, spanning the variety of Asian flavours including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Singaporean and Malaysian. Throughout my journey, and from my extensive travels to different countries, I developed a particular interest in local Asian street food, which was an inspiration for me to develop my palate and to recreate traditional recipes with a modern twist.

I aligned my concepts with the market trends, I visited some of the most popular Asian restaurants in town and developed my own style and creations. Asia and the Middle East are exciting destinations for me to work in as I still have a lot of potential to unleash. It is also easy for me to source refined and quality ingredients from these destinations, while I focus on creating unique dishes and offering our guests exceptional flavours with every dining experience. I am excited to see what comes next! Can you share with us your signature dish or style and what makes it special to you? Black Cod with Miso has been my favourite dish for a long time, as I really enjoy the texture of the subtle yet salty flavour of the cod contrasted by the sweetness of the miso. When prepared with mastery, this dish really is an all-time classic that guests can enjoy in Morimoto Doha. What’s that one ingredient that makes Asian an outstanding cuisine and devises the entire flavour? The majority of Asian countries strongly use garlic and onions as the base of their dishes, in addition to herbs and spices such as lemon grass, kaffir lime leaf, shisho leaf, wasabi, galangal, turmeric, nutmeg, coriander and even curry leaf. But, in my opinion, the best ingredient is the passion that comes from people who make the dish from their hearts. ✤ fact magazine

AN EXTRAORDINARY CULINARY AFFAIR On her whistle-stop visit to Doha, FACT spoke to Dominican Chef María Marte, the only woman in Spain and Latin America to date to achieve two Michelin stars. We chatted about her achievements, Dominican cuisine and what she aspires to explore in the culinary world. 54

W

ith expertise in Spanish cuisine, personal Dominican heritage and a penchant for cooking and gastronomy, Chef María Marte’s food is unique and creative, bursting with exquisite flavours. On one hand, it is contemporary and cutting edge and on the other, deeply inspired by her roots — giving you the best of both worlds. Born in 1976 in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, to a pastry-chef mother and a restaurant-owner father, María was destined to develop a love for cooking.. We caught up with her as she was here at Alwadi Doha MGallery Hotel Collection for an exclusive pop-up menu, featuring her acclaimed dishes, including Yucca Cupcake; Crispy Langoustines with avocado and coriander gazpacho; Seasonal Fish in coconut sauce as well as chocolate cream. After the dishes were cleared, María sat down for a chat with FACT.

What is the process like in developing a menu? Can you share with us your signature dish or style and what makes it special to you? When creating a tasting menu we must first focus on the main ingredient, inspiration can be found in many ways, but I still think that the kitchen is a magical place to create. My signature dish is the famous hibiscus flavours, it was my first creation in haute cuisine. Is there something in the food world you are looking to explore or learn about? We never stop exploring and learning, especially when we are talking about avant-garde cuisine, we are always looking, researching about new flavours and products to continue creating. ✤

You’re the only female chef in Madrid with two Michelin stars, what do you make of this unique distinction? Did this apply pressure on you moving forward? Being the only woman in Madrid with Michelin stars is a big commitment, more than a pride for me, I feel more committed to what I do every day. I achieved a lot in a very short time, this is still a great challenge for my career. What’s that one ingredient that makes Spanish/Mediterranean cuisine outstanding and affects the entire flavour? I always think that the main ingredient in Spanish gastronomy is olive oil, the green gold as they call it.

It’s quite rare to find something new in Doha as we have most everything here now in terms of food and taste. This contemporary take on fine dining and Japanese flavours combined with local palate-pleasing preferences, leaves diners with a lasting impression that wonderfully synchorises the art of fashionable gastronomy with an interior perfect for a day or a night out. The large glass windows provide a perfect picturesque background exposing the place to the warm sunlight and the feeling of open space. The menu is unconventional, showcasing progressive fusion – sushi rolls with just enough cooked fish or baked mussels with cheese We took our table on the first floor of the restaurant. You’ll forget you’re in Qatar as you embrace the techno ambience of the place. Everything is on trend, from the marble table-tops to metallic lamps and lighting. Our hosts took our order. We knew this gastronomic journey was bound to exquisite, as Timeless pretty much promises, as the table was swathed with our starters: Crab Salad, Sashimi Platter, Hot and Spicy Spider Rolls and Shredded Crab Rolls. • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT you. A perfect hint of spice that gives you a hit but keeps your palate undisturbed. The Sashimi Platter and Hot And Spicy Spider rolls are already famous and for good reason. The little lamb dumplings that arrived at our table may have looked small but were absolutely packed with juicy meaty flavours and enhanced with absolute deliciousness. I’d call it ‘meat with love!’ Before we headed on to our mains, we also indulged in Baked Mussels that I can truly say were some of the best I’ve ever had in Doha. The mussels were baked with cheese gratin and topped off with spicy lime mayonnaise. Perfectly crisp on the outside, due to the cheese, and quite creamy on the inside. You take a bite and you’re transported somewhere between Japan and Chile. Strong flavours are meshed together for a bang of savoury zest and potions of seafood bliss. Diving right into the mains: we opted for Oriental Barbecue Short Ribs — meat eaters will enjoy this dish. The flesh was tender on the inside and glazed with soy, honey, ginger and sweet potato puree. It was an incredible revelation and a rare combination of flair and substance. Each cut and bite was followed by a moment of silence. I strongly believe that a perfect taste makes you speechless enough to process the food and take in and feel each flavour — a sure sign of pure perfection and satisfaction. We ended this lunch with a stunning dessert — Blossom Tree featuring cotton candy, chocolate caramel mousse, brownie and rose water ice cream and a red velvet cake with caramel ice cream. The texture and sweetness of these desserts is enough to convince you to keep some space, because they’re all worth it!

THE FOOD GALLI With so many restaurants in town, FACT’s Asad Khan goes down the route of a familiar cuisine. He heads to Jamavar, at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, for the Friday Brunch.

60

fact magazine

DINING DELIGHT •

I

f you know me, you know I love everything South Asian. The Indian ambience of Jamavar can be felt as soon as you enter the doorway of the restaurant. The Mughal-inspired illustrations and carvings adorn the interior, very fine dining with the touch of a royal era: large golden lampshades casting an ethereal glow on the surroundings and the cosy tables that give the venue a feeling of space. Jamavar recently introduced a new Friday brunch, Khau Galli, and I couldn’t but head there to try it out myself after hearing rave reviews from friends and acquaintances alike. As we started with melting soya kebabs and stuffed chilli pakodas, which were deliciously mouth melting, we were served with some tamarind juice which was absolutely revitalising. A tamarind juice paired with pakodas and samosas is a very street food thing in India and no wonder Jamavar named it’s Friday brunch as Khau Galli: Khau means treat and Galli means ‘small lane’. With small portions of all the appetisers, we got right into the chutneys and famous papads. The sizzling Tandoori Lobster (smoked lobster with tandoori spices, ginger and overnight hung yogurt) set us in the mood for mains, which were not even close to being served yet, with a dash of chaat masala, and a sprinkle of coriander — leaving a whiff of perfection. Now I went to my next target, the famous chaats of India! If you ask my mother, she’ll testify I had never been a street food kinda guy — but over the years in Doha, my love for Indian chaats fact magazine

61

• DINING DELIGHT

has grown to the extent that my work-side cravings have led to flavourful hunts and food deliveries. The paani puri infused chaat was crispy on the outside and introduced me to the everpleasing palatable yoghurt and chutney on the inside. What followed chaats was the Lagan ki Raan (slow cooked Indian kid goat with Kashmiri chilli and Nawabi spices). With the chutneys at my disposal and the lamb in front, I could easily call it a meatilicious affair. The lamb was tender with bursting flavours. Knowing how vegetarian food is a big part of Indian cuisine, I was also introduced to barbecued broccoli in melted cheese and butter. I’m not much into vegetables but if they were to be included in my diet, this was it! My foray into the mains included Kacche Gosht Ki Biryani and Butter Chicken. The tender lamb in well-done basmati rice was incredible, sealing the deal for me with the tenderness of the meat and finger-licking tanginess. Although Jamavar is a finedining restaurant, since Khau Galli is a street-food experience, I’d advise you to roll up your sleeves and put those hands to use. The good thing: biryani was not very spicy and relies on subtle flavours to make its mark on the taste buds. For butter chicken, it was very creamy and understated in taste and the crisp and warm roti complemented and gave the meal a home-cooked feel, simply a taste that I have known forever. The dessert at Jamavar took all the points! The Baked Gulab Jamun, Jalebi Rabdi and Carrot Halwa were bang on! Pro tip: Although the appetisers and mains are too good to be missed, keep some space for desserts, they are definitely worth it and you do not want to miss them! ✤

DISCOVERING THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN FACT’s Emille Artigas discovers that the Mediterranean-themed buffet at Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha’s well-known all-day dining restaurant, Choices, lets you explore and discover the many aspects of the region’s cuisine, from the history to the flavours.

ON THE MENU •

U

nlike other types of cuisine, which are generally based on ethnicity or culture, Mediterranean fare is a product of the culinary trends followed by the people who live in the geographic region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. This area encompasses many countries. As a result, some differences can be found in the methods of food preparation. In fact, Mediterranean cuisine can be divided into other sub-cuisines such as Egyptian, Maghrebi, Greek, Levantine, Spanish, Ottoman (Turkish), Provencal (French) and Italian. The walk towards the Choices all-day dining restaurant takes you through the vibrant, bright and airy lobby of the Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha to the mezzanine where the spacious and lively restaurant is found. You are immediately welcomed into a warm and inviting setting. Choices has recently introduced a fresh concept to the hotel’s pulsating food scene, with the Mediterranean Themed Buffet every Tuesday, which is starting to attract an avid crowd. The service team is friendly and truly gracious with each and every one enthusiastic to provide you with a remarkable dining experience, from proudly explaining the items in the buffet to serving drinks and food to the table. The aroma coming from the live stations was so tempting, we did not wait long to head towards the food. The first station has the freshly made breads, cold buffet section and the cheese station, and there are countless selections from different regions, from French baguettes, either white or with malted cereals and onion focaccia bread to poached mushrooms, fava dip of mashed broad beans with dill, fresh figs and salads such as fresh spinach salad with walnut yoghurt and garlic. I particularly went for seconds of the cheeses: brie, camembert, taleggio, comte, and the cold cuts: smoked turkey, beef pastrami, salami picante, spicy salami with red peppers and salami tipo Milano, all of them were so tasty I couldn't get enough. Little did I know that the divine Mediterranean gastronomic journey was just starting. We followed that flavourful aroma which led as to the Pide station and the fresh Turkish flat bread was served to our table. From the perfectly cooked dough, to the richness of the filling, this Turkish pride is one amazing touch to the buffet. We took another tour of the sections and our eyes were feasting on so many delectable selections from all over the Mediterranean region. We filled our plates with flavours from Paella de Mariscos, from Spain, a delicious ensemble of safron rice, mussels, prawn, squid, olives and pepper to creamy French baby chicken tarragon, Greek eggplant mousakka and salted crust sea bass on the carving station. My favourites however were, first, the Veal Ossobuco, which I have been craving for so long. It was served in such a generous portion that I did not think I would finish it. But the bites got better every time, the veal shank meat was so tender, rich and juicy, I just could not stop until the last mouthful. My second favourite of the mains was the Döner Kebab, freshly made from the grill station, savoury shavings of lamb meat could not be any better a finish to our spectacular Mediterranean journey. We barely had space for desserts but when we headed to the dessert station, we were again overwhelmed by the lineup of fact magazine

sweets and tempting items on display. The selection included: Turkish Delights, baklava, Greek semolina cake with orange, Greek honey loukoumades, Spanish almond cake, date makrouds, fruits and much more. We went for the tiramisu and the coffee creme brulee which perfected the already immaculate Mediterranean dining experience. Mediterranean cuisine is an amalgamation of different cultures. Throughout history, the region has been a major trading hub due to being at the intersection between Europe, Asia and Africa. The ingredients have changed over the course of history and, with a multitude of variations, the Mediterranean-themed buffet experience at Choices earned a number of repeat visits from me and I am certain that each time I go back will feel like the first time. ✤

I was served with classic and innovative dishes, brought to the table fresh and piping hot! From the moment you set foot in Majlis, it’s clear to see that the restaurant is a labour of love. Considering the fact that it was a weekend, the venue was super busy. The aroma of the food coming from the kitchen, which is located at the right of the entrance, leads you to want more and you can see the maître d' exporting dishes from the kitchen to the tables. Wow! The plates looked mouthwatering and smelled delicious. We started with appetisers, which included traditional stuffed vine leaves with herbs and cooked rice, crispy falafel, fattoush, Jibney We Jarjir (rocca leaves, cherry tomato, white onion and feta cheese drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil), as well as flavourful hummus with avocado — everything outstanding. What struck me first was the exquisitely fresh flavours of Jibney We Jarjir; each layer had an element of surprisingly bursting flavours, whether the sweetness of the cherry tomatoes, the fact magazine

• FOODIE CORNER creaminess of the cheese or the light texture of the olive oil. One of the restaurant’s most popular salads and perhaps one of the healthiest. What really makes this dish distinct is the lemon dressing, strong enough to taste on every mouthful yet subtle enough to let other flavours take over the taste buds — exactly how a salad should be. Where I always stick to my trusted hummus and fattoush, I kept coming back to rocca leaves this time around. I must add that the hummus had a very nice creamy flair to it and, with avocado, the texture is even more viscous. I would recommend you to for sure try it. It definitely will be a very different variation on the hummus you may have tried somewhere else. The chef at Majlis takes quite a pride in this one, and rightfully so! Now onto the mains! There is a huge selection of meat, fish and rice dishes on the menu but it was the Lamb Mansaf for me. It gets full marks for the tenderness of the lamb and subtlety of the taste in terms of spices. Because the lamb is served with spicy rice on the side, the gravy of the meat, cooked in a milky sauce, is very balanced in terms of saltiness and the sourness of fermented yoghurt. Next up is Chargrilled King Prawn — juicy, perfectly cooked and rich in taste, followed by a platter of mixed grill featuring lamb chops, lamb kofta, chicken shish and beef kofta. With non-existent expectations, because I personally prefer chicken grills, I dug in. I truly wasn’t expecting the chops and kofta to be that good. My knife smoothly sliced into the meat and as I took the first bite and experienced the juicy, tender lamb, bathed with the most delicious spices that excite your taste buds, I couldn’t but utter ‘Oh My Gosh!' Even though I was offered grilled tomatoes and chilis to go with it, I didn't even consider mixing my palate with anything but meat at that moment. As for desserts, the chef recommended pistachio baklava with ice-cream and Umm Ali and oh my they did not disappoint! Any restaurant that can surprise me, even after a couple of visits, comes highly recommended from my end and I can firmly say that whatever and however you choose to indulge, you’ll enjoy every single bite at Majlis. ✤

ITALIAN BITES

FACT’s Asad Khan heads to Di Capri at La Cigale Hotel, Doha for a themed night ‘Apericena’ to savour Italian delicacies in small bites of flavour and warmth. 72

BEST BITES •

I

n 2021, you don’t really need to go to Napoli for authentic Italian food, the best Italian restaurants in Doha serve every conceivable variety of pasta and risotto, often made in-house, while Doha diners are very familiar with everything from panzerotti to rocca salad, ravioli and paccheri pasta. And then there’s Di Capri at La Cigale Hotel, a warm, cosy place with pleasingly old-style décor, credited with transforming Doha’s gastronomy offering of Italian delicacies from its out-ofthe way but central spot in the city, where the oven is lit almost all the time due to the brimming customers, even on a weekday. On the menu? Fettuccine Boscaiola, penne with eggplant, cleverly prepared risotto, polpette in salsa (meatballs in tomato sauce) and Arancini with stuffed cheese. It also wouldn’t be erroneous to say that the restaurant seduces guests with its menu of selected beverages. As I enter I spot the new offering by Di Capri scrawled on a chalkboard. A themed night Apericena: the many tastes of Italy, every Saturday featuring a set menu with small bites served one by one. I am escorted towards the exclusive dining area that is minimalistic in décor but speaks volumes of the Italian heritage. Amidst the warm, dim lighting I see a mural behind the bar featuring an Italian landscape with a Vespa in the centre of it all. There’s also live music — a violinist — complementing the pan crackling in the open kitchen.

• BEST BITES It’s sparkling water with ice and lemon for me to start before the chef asks to take the liberty of surprising me with the best he has to offer. Oh my, that’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss because a chef knows his kitchen and he knows it well! Rocca salad with bresaola rolls, tomatoes and parmesan cheese arrives accompanied by burrata cheese salad with rocca and tomatoes in olive oil with a surfeit of sea salt and a vibrant thwack of chilli. The appetisers are truly great. I’m not really a fan of greens and more a person who loves calamari in starters. But here, the salads are so minimalistic yet bursting with flavours that my well-crusted calamari with vegetables tempura and tartar sauce takes a back seat. The calamari is of course well-done and good, but I’m more interested in the burrata and mini panzerottis on the other plate. Now the second round of appetisers: ravioli stuffed with ricotta, spinach and tomato basil sauce, paccheri pasta with seafood, fettuccini with chicken and spring vegetables risotto. Ravioli with tomato sauce is an Italian staple; you cannot visit an Italian restaurant and not savour this. It would be an absolute shame! The fettuccine is al dente with the subtleness of mushrooms, the sauce is velvety and delicious. They are right to offer some additional bread for the sauce because this is pasta at its best. The mains started with chicken breast marinated in Dijon mustard sauce with vegetables. I know it’s just chicken but it really goes above and beyond, almost tender in its butteriness. The dish manages to be all things to all people: rich but light, healthy while almost brazenly luxe and practically categorised as comfort food. At the heart of the menu is meatballs in tomato sauce. I can taste

the squashed tomatoes and the meat so well cut and formed in terms of the fat content that it can pass as Wagyu. So earthy in taste and even more delicious once you take time to analyse the flavours. It’s the perfect combination; it’s like a friend — a savoury, thick and flavourful friend. That’s all for the food, which is beautifully presented and hard to fault. There are no gimmicks here, just a perfect take on classic dishes — it’s wholesome and filling enough to skip breakfast next day but don’t leave without ordering the assorted Italian ice cream to end your day. Arrivederci! ✤

hen there’s a new place becoming the talk of the town, you can’t but sit up and take notice. Over the past few weeks, I had been hearing about the Spa at Park Hyatt Doha from several people and no matter how much I like that hotel, obviously for its location and other services, I had to try it to believe it! And so, I headed over to experience the De-Stress Body Massage and I cannot truly remember why I never considered going there before. As the name suggests, this massage is used to relax muscles and dissolve contractures caused by stress, poor posture, lack of rest or a sedentary lifestyle. This is a stronger massage, rather than relaxing, although it is not more painful than necessary, only natural in working the tense area. The soothing light and calm background music calms you instantly from the moment you enter the spa. My journey started as I was welcomed by the receptionist who ushered me towards the male section on the second floor of the facility with minimalistically appointed treatment rooms. The massage rooms looked like mini hotel suites with an attached washroom and shower and changing rooms. I got into the luxurious robe and slippers and was seated for an instant foot massage along with some chamomile tea and date energy balls — imagine, the best is yet to come! As I slipped into the cotton sheets, I was instructed to breathe slowly ‘in order to better improve’ circulation as my masseur kneaded my back and leg muscles with such strength — like a pizzaiola knocking a doughball — that it took my breath away. It instantly loosened up muscles that were in a knot due my recent work schedule of attending events and being on the go. To say fact magazine

• SPA & WELLNESS that this was an extravagant moment would be a word too small for what I was feeling. She started then with some stretching and smooth movements to relax me for the day, using a hefty amount of VITAMAN oil, 100% Sydney-Australian made with no synthetic chemicals or artificial fragrance. The rhythmic movements instantly put me in a state of contentment as I endured the pain of my muscles loosening — I felt like a masochist enjoying the pain of relief! During my one-hour session I didn’t need to explain myself — all I had to do was breathe. The synchronicity between the exhale of my breath and each knead into my muscles became its very own language. While my dominant right palm was pressed, I could picture all the nerves under my skin connecting and sparking. While a massage may seem like something you have to struggle through schedules to make time for, it’s one that’s worth the effort. The spa here focuses on well-being and energy renewal and a post massage highlight has to be the sauna and mood showers. The mood shower was literally a one-of-a-kind water experience that featured multiple shower heads with contrasting temperatures and timings. It would pep up even the most tired and battered body. I can happily report that the massage was a perfect balance between deep and just over the skin, it left me feeling considerably more relaxed than when I went in — so now I’ve come to the belief that no month should go by without a massage treatment. It helps you gain a perspective, quite literally. ✤

nly 15 minutes away from Velana International Airport, Male, by speedboat, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa will have you in awe from the moment it comes into view. We arrived at the resort’s jetty to the sound of beautiful beating drums mixed with serene ocean melodies. Handmade shell necklaces were placed around our necks as we received the warmest welcome ever. We hopped onto the hotel’s buggy and the food and beverage (F&B) manager escorted us to our room, giving us a quick tour of the island on the way. Yes, it is such a small narrow island – but in the best private way possible! An appealing old tree, inhabited by green and purple orchids, marks the starting point. The spacious reception on one side; 24 Degrees, the all-day dining restaurant, on the other. A shop and a library are nearby and a long, slim path under a surreal canapé of local trees, travels among beach villas and over-water villas. Just as we reached the lagoon where our Deluxe Lagoon Pool Villa was located, we peeked at the infinity pool. A sign said Deep End Restaurant and we instantly admired the intelligent name! The villa was snug with a warm atmosphere, and well laid out to accommodate all your vacation needs. Our favourite part was the private infinity pool, surrounded by a chaise longue with a table and two arm chairs. We also loved how the TV stand doubled as the mini bar where the coffee machine and kettle were placed thoughtfully. The bed was just the right size and a ‘Welcome to Taj’ message was prettily laid across it using carefully cut coconut leaves… this takes serious time – and we really appreciated the gesture.

Adi, our friendly butler, went through the itinerary with us then swiftly left us to ourselves telling us he would be back at 7pm to take us for dinner. We were hungry, we unpacked quickly, slipped into our swimwear and headed to 24 Degrees to order the mixed seafood grill. A huge plate filled our table; shrimps, calamari, mussels, three different kinds of fish steaks including salmon, and the local tuna, plus the king of all seafood, the local reef lobster. With green salad and fries, this plate was enough for more than two people. Afterwards, we headed back to our own pool for a much-needed chill. At 7pm sharp, Adi was at the door. We were ready to experience Deep End. In the Maldives, and in Taj Exotica, you are always surrounded by wood, from the furniture and villas to the green environs. Such a privilege not to be trapped in concrete. Deep End is the only restaurant built on top of the water, in a ring shape. Tables are arranged around an opening in the middle that allows you to look down to the crystal-clear sea water and watch baby sharks swimming… incredible! The restaurant serves a regular and a vegetarian set menu. The latter offers a light tomato soup and delicious garlicky asparagus risotto. Whilst the seafood soup and reef lobster grill are just as delightful! We followed up with the rich and creamy chocolate mousse with olive oil-based ice cream – one tasty culinary surprise! Sleep cannot be more comfortable than in the bed of a fivestar resort. We woke up the next day all fresh and energised. The extravagant floating breakfast arrived perfectly on time. We jumped in the water and took great Insta pictures. The breakfast options range from porridge to omelette and eggs Benedict, 88

Maldivian Massuni and tuna curry, to masala dosa, Korean rice and beef bowl, bread, waffles, and a great jam selection as well as fresh fruits. To enjoy this amazing selection to the max, we had to reschedule our first activity of the day. Snorkelling is a must. Using the snorkelling kit provided to all guests by the resort’s diving centre, we took the fixed ladder down to the lagoon. The water was crystal clear, and the fins made swimming easy. The lagoon is home to a rainbow of fish, it was amazing! Our next lunch took a massive luxurious twist when the F&B manager suggested trying the ‘200-dollar Pizza’. At the pool restaurant, with million-dollar views, the executive chef personally laid it down at our table. A colony of the world’s most premium ingredients. A quattro of duck and foie gras from France, Wagyu beef carpaccio and black olives from Australia, prosciutto and black truffle from Parma, Italy, and finally homegrown reef lobster, are laid on a crispy base covered with a generous layer of cream cheese and garnished with Iranian caviar and edible gold leaves with a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar. A complimentary sparkling beverage accompanied the incredible meal to leave us in total awe! Another extraordinary food feat we tried was the jaw-dropping Lobster Burger. On a huge wooden board, the burger comes with fries, onion rings, and both green and coleslaw salads. This burger is bursting with tender flavourful lobster meat, and is one gigantic meal for two (or more). What an experience! Other activities to put on your list include the discovery drive to watch baby black tip sharks feed on tuna chunks, as well as the guided snorkel trip which is a truly indescribable experience one glance under the water is enough to capture your emotions. We also witnessed the stingray feeding on the resort’s beach before we headed back to the speedboat docked at the jetty for the perfect Sunset Cruise and dolphin watching. At Taj Exotica Resort & Spa many of our dreams came true; seeing a pod of wild dolphins was the most soul-elevating gift. With a sunset worth a thousand words – this is one place that will always hold a special place in our hearts. ✤

BIG SCREEN Love Hard Need to Know:

Love Hard is your typical Christmas romantic comedy with a twist. In this story, we follow a journalist from Los Angeles (LA) who hopes to find her one true love through online dating. However, things don’t turn out as expected as she finds herself falling for a guy she has never met! A perfect light-hearted and amusing movie to get in the holiday spirit.

Creators: Hernan Jimenez Cast: Nina Dobrev, Jimmy O. Yang, Darren Barnet

Why Is It Worth Watching?

“A great show with a gripping storyline and cinematography, with each scene being a single puzzle piece in the complex storyline.”

On My Block Need to Know:

On My Block is a compelling and engaging teen drama, with the fourth and final season having been recently released. We see four friends attempting to navigate high school and trying to stay alive as they get involved in the dangerous and dark underbelly of their neighbourhood.

Creators: Lauren Lungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, Jeremy Haft

Cast: Diego Tinoco, Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray

Apart from being a funny and laid-back film to watch during the festive season, this story is surprisingly heartfelt as it explores the modern difficulties of dating. We accompany Natalie Bauer (Nina Dobrev), a journalist who documents her various dating disasters online. Just as she starts losing hope, she meets the perfect guy: attractive, charming and sweet. The only problem is she has never seen him face-to-face! As a romantic gesture, she flies to the east coast of the US to surprise him for Christmas, only to discover she has been cat-fished by Josh Lin (Jimmy O. Yang). To make it up to her, he agrees to set her up with the real man in the photos, Tag (Darren Barnet), as long as she pretends to be his girlfriend to impress his family. As the complicated charade of dishonesty starts, there are some surprises in store. This endearing and cute movie is the perfect Christmas romcom to relax with during the holidays.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This is an interesting show. It stands out amongst so many teen dramas as it tackles the reality of many teens in America – living in dangerous and underfunded areas. In it, we encounter four best friends, Monsé Finnie (Sierra Capri), Ruby Martinez (Jason Genao), Jamal Turner (Brett Gray) and Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco), as they start high school and deal with adolescent drama and romance. However, the show also portrays the difficulties of being part of one of the minority groups in the United States. A great show with a gripping storyline and cinematography, with each scene being a single puzzle piece in the complex storyline. The development of the characters and relationships throughout the series makes the show worth the time. 90

Win Me Something By Kyle Lucia Wu

POP/SOUL/JAZZ

R&B/SOUL

30 By Adele

An Evening With Silk Sonic By Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak

With all the hype around the first music from Adele in several years, we felt it would be remiss not to give this a spin. After all, it became the year’s biggest seller in the US after just three days. The music press has, for the most part, been kind, recognising the rawness of emotion from beginning to end. The singer herself has acknowledged that this album is about “divorce baby, divorce” and, taken in that context, it could be argued that it is both strong and, probably, cathartic. But easy listening, it surely is not. We quite liked Strangers by Nature which sounds a bit like a classic movie track from the 1950s or ‘60s. Even the big sort of chorus harks back to that era. Cry Your Heart Out comes off as probably one of the most upbeat tunes but, as the name suggests, has some pretty miserable lyrics. My Little Love talks about taking the blame [for her child’s unhappiness] and sounds like an homage to her son with sweet conversational snippets between the two thrown in. Maybe we’ve become too accustomed to music-lite and this definitely requires a certain level of listener maturity. We could imagine sobbing along to this post-breakup, surrounded by tissues and wailing at the injustice of the world. Maybe it would be more palatable one song at a time but with five of the 13 tracks coming in at six minutes plus, getting through the whole thing in a single sitting is not something we’ll try again in a hurry. Final verdict, very glad that 30 is only the title and there weren’t actually 30 songs to endure.

Motown was described by Time magazine as ‘joyous, sad, romantic, mad, groovin', movin' music’. And, if you’re down for the 2021 version of just that vibe, then this is for you. With a track list of just eight songs and an intro, this is like a whole party squeezed into just over half an hour! And, with just one exception, every one of these will have you on your feet and groovin’ to the beat (yes, we are officially old!), Fly As Me is seriously funky with a little bit of rap early on. What’s not to love about a line like ‘You deserve to be seen with somebody as fly as me’? After Last Night is funny and we can’t make up our minds if it’s tongue in cheek cliché of some of the 1970s’ best, think a response to the ‘Walrus of Lurve’. Smokin’ Out The Window – They’re even suited and booted and holding cigs. It’s a little bit bitter but funny as heck. It’s Motown 21 with all that was great about bands such as The Four Tops and The Temptations brought bang up to date. And, for that one exception, no album would be complete without a little bit of heartbreak and Put A Smile On is it with lyrics that will resonate with guys and girls alike. On 777 Bruno Mars is back to his Energizer Bunny best, tunefully rapping over a cracking percussion-heavy background. This just sounds like fun. And Blast Off is the perfect finale to an album that is an homage to a kinder time.

The novel follows Willa Chen, a 24-year-old girl from Brooklyn who finds a gig as a nanny for a wealthy Manhattan couple, although she doesn’t even like children herself. Although the novel is packed with big emotional punch, readers find Willa in a foreign land trying to find herself whilst experiencing a sense of family, something she never had growing up. Wu wonderfully interweaves Willa’s adulthood with a series of flashbacks including her childhood traumas and haunting experiences. Through the novel one can figure that Willa’s preconceptions about children disappear as she fully submerses herself in the job and its responsibilities. This novel is full of well-structured, seemingly small moments.

Burntcoat

by Sara Hall The covid novels are coming up and this one is quite a winner! Set against the backdrop of the pandemic, Burntcoat explores art, love and grief experienced during this time. This powerful, well-constructed novel is set in a near-future England and narrates the story of a 59-yearold artist, Edith Harkness, as she embarks on a journey of making a sculpture to memorialise the deaths of close ones. It sensitively narrates Edith’s seminal moments. In the scenario of a ‘disaster’ with Edith in her warehouse, the shortage of groceries and basic household goods, curfews and looting take centre stage. There’s the angle of love in Burntcoat, a crucial element, resonating with the existential threat. A powerful story, rich in description setting a benchmark for pandemic fiction! fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About NASA And The Asteroid

Psycho Killers

Tragedy

Sounds like the title for a bad space movie, doesn’t it? In fact, Armageddon already went there back in 1998. But this time, it’s for real! Well, not the space rock bit but the bit about NASA launching a spacecraft in an attempt to knock an, allegedly, harmless asteroid off its path. In late November NASA launched the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket which carries, in its nose, a DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) which, in about 10 months’ time, will plough into the asteroid Dimorphos. Its mission is to knock the space rock off track, proving

We were much amused recently to see social media and even some of the mainstream rags reporting that teams at the UK’s Liverpool University and Liverpool John Moores University have come up with a test called the CATTri+ that owners can use to discover whether their beloved moggy is, in fact, a feline psycho. At first, we wondered why. After all, most cat owners we know would readily admit that their pets can sometimes be a little ‘challenging’. But, it seems there is a laudable cause behind what, at first, seemed like a frivolous study.

The world watched and listened in horror as it was revealed that up to 27 would-be migrants had died in the English Channel in a bid to cross from France to the UK. Taking to the water in flimsy dinghies as cold, wet and windy weather made the journey more perilous than usual. There has been much commentary on the fact that many of these unfortunate people are coming from countries such as Iraq and Syria and are well aware that international law requires them to claim asylum in the first ‘safe’ country they reach. Some have even been interviewed saying they cannot get legal visas for the

such technology is capable of the job should it be necessary in the future. There is much mention in the mainstream media of the fact that Dimorphos is simply a relatively small chunk of rock, harmlessly meandering its way through space, though rather close to Earth. But, if you’ve ever watched the 1998 movie Deep Impact, you, like us, might just be wondering if all is as innocent as it seems.

Researchers hope it will improve humanfeline interactions and, eventually, lead to a reduction in the number of cats landing in shelters. However, it is no surprise to us that lead researcher Rebecca Evans told the Daily Mail that: “It is likely that all cats have an element of psychopathy as it would have once been helpful for their ancestors in terms of acquiring resources.” Who’d have thought it?!

UK, so this is their only way in. Many will condemn them and ask what drives people to risk their lives in such attempts. But, in truth, it is only necessary to look at the conditions in their home countries to, at least partly, understand. Whatever your view, the pointless and avoidable loss of 27 lives, some of them children, is nothing short of a tragedy. And there’s no doubt governments across the world need to act.
