Happy Holidays

Good grief how 2022 has flown! I don’t know if it’s just me getting older but the years seem to speed by in a blur, it seems just a couple of month’s ago that I was preparing the New Year issue and now here we are heading into 2023. But before we do, there’s the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 final to look forward to and lots of National Day and festive season gatherings to get through. To help you decide what to do over the coming holidays, we’ve rounded up some of the best deals around and we’ve also added in a handy gift guide, just in case you fancy treating someone special.

Speaking of time, see what I did there? We had the chance to chat to Oliver Ebstein, owner and CEO of watchmaker Chronoswiss. With just 1,500 to 2,000 timepieces created each year, we’re talking serious exclusivity – now that’s something I wouldn’t mind finding in my festive stocking!

We also met up with Laetitia Lumbroso, joint CEO of chic French brand Destree, who unveiled exciting plans for their presence in Printemps Doha. Yes, that is another hint! And, of course, we couldn’t neglect a certain football tournament. We’ve got a few of the quirkier stories associated with the World Cup as well as more info on where to watch the games and catch the big-name performances. Elsewhere we quizzed chefs, ate good stuff and got the lowdown on photography inspiration from Abdelaziz Al Safadi, otherwise known as @withazoz. Plus we’ve got your usual roundups of news from the worlds of motoring, tech and events happening around the city, so make sure you don’t leave home without your holiday copy.

Wishing you all a wonderful National Day and holiday season and we’ll see you all again in the New Year.

AN OSCAR ON THE CARDS?

Doha Film Institute has announced that Qatar’s first ever Oscarqualified film is in consideration for the Academy Award.

It’s a proud moment for Qatar to have the home-grown documentary short subject, And Then They Burn The Sea produced by Doha Film Institute and directed by Majid Al-Remaihi, as the country’s first ever Oscar-qualified film in consideration for the Academy Award. The production was also Qatar’s first at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival, where it was screened and shortlisted for the Concorso Internazionale competition. Additionally, it won Best Short at Vienna Shorts and the Silver Tanit Award at Carthage Film Festival. Further, it was shortlisted for the IDA Documentary Awards and screened as part of The Short Contenders programme at USC, in Los Angeles, with Al-Remaihi in presence.

The film is a poetic, visual essay of love and loss as experienced by the filmmaker, who had to leave his film studies at Middlebury College in his senior year to care for his mother. Majid Al-Remaihi said: “Seven years ago, I began to feel an endless sea drive a wedge between myself and my mother as her struggle with Alzheimer’s continued to chip away at her sense of being. At 19, there was no specific way for me to reconcile with this continuous and incremental loss, of what it had robbed,

and what it continues to rob of the futures and pasts that are suddenly irretrievable – but cinema, and this film, helped me piece together abstractions and unfinished conversations as a result of my need for gestures to mourn and heal. I am quite honoured to have this love letter to my mother receive this recognition as it marks a critical part of my life and honours the myriad contributions of mentors and collaborators that allowed for it to happen.”

This international qualification for an award such as the Oscars is a testament to Doha Film Institute’s commitment and mission to empower emerging filmmakers from the region. The documentary is represented by Wouter Jansen of Square Eyes for sales and distribution. ✤

FOOTBALL FEVER

Yes, we know it’s supposed to all be about the football but Qatar has been very creative in staging events and activations to bring the Beautiful Game to life in innovative ways. We take a look at just a few of the examples that have caught our eye as well as some big-name concerts coming this month.

Field Of Dreams

Or rather Tree Of Dreams. The CONMEBOL – Tree of Dreams, created by the South American Football Confederation in collaboration with Msheireb Properties, documents the history and achievements of football in the Latin continent. Open from 9am to 12am throughout the tournament, the Tree of Dreams at Sikkat Al-Wadi, Msheireb Downtown, features three experiences: Player Gallery, Player Experience, and Best Tournaments. It reflects the roots of South American football, from the Maracanã to the potrero pitches of the barrios and encapsulates a distinct South American spirit in football found nowhere else. Explore a tree inspired by the roots of soccer in the South American region, from the Maracanã stadium to the popular neighbourhood playgrounds, the tree provides life to the barrios that surround it, connecting South American football’s past, present and future.

Silly Season

He’s dressed in red and white, he’s hidden in the crowd, and he’s calling on football fans to find him. It might seem crazy but Heinz is becoming the most searched-for name of the season thanks to unlikely hero, Thomas Heinz, who’s attending the most sought-after matches and mingling with fans while wearing a jersey with his name on it.

In a stunt reminiscent of the classic ‘Where’s Waldo?’ series, the German fan is transforming Doha into a giant treasure hunt for visitors with the promise of exclusive merchandise along with a grand prize worth QR10,000 to those who manage to spot him. Thomas was approached by Heinz Arabia to attend football’s biggest event on behalf of the brand as a human billboard, getting the name out there in a fun way and even managing to highjack the footie conversation.

To find out more on his whereabouts, search his hashtag #FindHeinz and follow his account @thomas.heinz22 on Instagram for a chance to win a grand cash prize.

Jumpers For Goalposts

Well, not quite. Qatar Tourism has come up with a great live destination art experience featuring goalpost-shaped installations that frame some of the country’s most picturesque views The initiative sees a collaboration between acclaimed local and international artists, with designs representing the countries of Qatar, England, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.

Visitors can shoot their snaps and share their #PostsofQatar to prove they were really here.

The goalpost installations can be found at Lusail City Marina, West Bay Beach, Inland Sea, Katara Cultural Village, The Pearl-Qatar, MIA Park, Place Vendôme, Aspire Zone, Souq Waqif and Flag Plaza.

TRAVELLING IN STYLE

Thanks to a partnership spanning four tournaments, the World Cup Trophy travels in style with its own official trunk made by the master artisans at Louis Vuitton. And, for this year’s edition, the brand has launched a special capsule collection. Unveiled at the opening match, the custom-made travel case was specially crafted at Louis Vuitton’s Asnières workshop. It’s covered in a beautiful, lightweight yet hardwearing, laserengraved monogrammed titanium, a material that has been used in the maison’s menswear collection. Protected at each of the eight corners with natural leather, the trunk is fitted with a lock and six clasps made from ruthenium, a strong dark-grey metal. The case was meticulously designed to protect and transport the 6.175-kilogram, 18-carat gold and malachite FIFA World Cup Trophy.

Since its foundation in 1854, Louis Vuitton has crafted many custom-made travel objects, from a foldout trunk-bed for 19thcentury explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza to a portable teaservice trunk for the Maharajah of Baroda.

Since 2010, Louis Vuitton has provided the travel trunk for one of the world’s most sought-after, legendary trophies. Over the years following, Louis Vuitton’s relationship with the FIFA World Cup has grown, unveiling a new leather goods collection launched for the 2018 edition of the sporting tournament.

And this year, once again, Louis Vuitton unveiled an exclusive capsule collection specially designed for the 22nd edition of the event. Five collectible pieces in black Taurillon leather channel

the game’s energy by revisiting one of the maison’s most emblematic signatures, the Damier motif, embossed to recall the movement of the net as a goal is scored. The range captures the excitement of football in sophisticated shapes, sporty treatments and discreetly elegant details. Timeless icons such as the Keepall 50 and City Keepall bags, as well as the Discovery backpack return, offering ample central compartments, practical inner pockets that keep essentials to hand and adjustable straps accented with black metallic hardware; on Keepall styles, shoulder straps are removable. The Keepall 50 also features five protective bottom studs shaped like football [boot] cleats. Small leather goods include a dopp kit and a handy pocket organiser. The collection is available at selected Louis Vuitton stores and online. ✤

FACT magazine spent the day in the new HONGQI HS5, a vehicle that delivers a level of luxury and refinement usually reserved for cars with a much higher price tag. INTRODUCING THE HONGQI HS5 DELUXE 4WD

This month, we were privileged enough to get behind the wheel of the 2022 HONGQI HS5 Deluxe compact luxury SUV, thanks to the team at Al Mana Motors. Having already experienced the opulent HONGQI H9 saloon earlier this year, we had high expectations for the brand’s latest lavish offering.

HONGQI is a Chinese luxury car marque, established in over a dozen foreign countries, and is becoming more popular by the day. Its determination to change the public perception of Chinese luxury, as well as to take on prestigious brands like Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW is showcased through every new model. One or two of their premium creations are even vying for a place at the table with the prestigious Rolls-Royce and Bentley brands.

Exterior

The moment we laid eyes on the new HONGQI HS5 we remembered why we were so impressed with HONGQI during our last encounter with the brand. The front end of the 2022 model displays a prominent chrome front grille, along with sculptured LED headlights, daytime running lights, and front fog lamps. The chrome red stripe, that is HONGQI’s emblem, runs from the front and centre of the bonnet all the way down to the grille. The flanks feature body-coloured, power folding and movable side mirrors, with integrated turn signals, along with stylish 20inch wheels. Bold exterior lines and subtle chrome elements are located all around the body, adding further touches of class to an already grand appearance. At the back end, LED rear lights, a rear licence plate light, a roof spoiler with brake light, along with the dual exhaust system, all work together to create truly handsome hind quarters.

Interior

The HONGQI HS5 comes in three trim levels, namely the Comfortable 2WD, the Deluxe 2WD, and the Deluxe 4WD. We were fortunate enough to experience the top-of-the-range 4WD version. Greeted by 12-way adjustable front seats with memory function, we had the perfect position from which to take in the upmarket interior. These seats are upholstered in the very finest of materials, complete with diamond stitching. The multifunctional steering wheel felt just right in hand and is equipped with a speaker, Bluetooth, a Trip-Computer System control, and shift paddles.

The ambient interior lighting offers 253 Indoor Mood Lighting options and, when combined with the dual zone automatic climate control and the panoramic sunroof, ensured we experienced a relaxing and comfortable interior environment, whatever the time of day or night.

With ample leg, shoulder, and head room throughout the SUV, every occupant is assured supreme comfort. This is further enhanced by a rear seat air conditioning vent, along with rear door and back windshield dark privacy glass. A 12V backup power supply is also located in the rear. A generous luggage compartment adds to the practical nature of this premium SUV.

Infotainment & Technology

The infotainment system of the new HONGQI HS5 is clean and minimalistic in nature, and features a double 12.3-inch, high-

quality LCD screen, along with a driver information display, all of which are beautifully integrated into the car’s cockpit. We found this system to be intuitive and easy to navigate, providing us with a sense of complete control over the vehicle’s extensive range of functions. A 12-speaker Bose sound system is also included in the setup, amongst several other entertainment amenities. Further fancy features of our Deluxe model included an impressive head-up display, satellite navigation, wireless charging and an air purifier system.

Performance & Safety

Despite being highly impressed by all aspects of this luxury SUV’s exterior and interior designs, it was its on-road performance that really grabbed our attention. Housing a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo charged, direct injection engine, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, the new HONGQI HS5 has plenty of energy on offer.

Delivering 224hp, along with 340Nm of torque, this 2022 model can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 8.7 seconds, and produces a top speed of 210km/h. Furthermore, the fourwheel drive system coupled with the five selectable driving modes, ensures the best possible performance in all conditions. A vast array of safety and driver assistance features have been fitted in the new model to ensure the wellbeing of all occupants. These include but are not limited to, ABS Braking Assist, Electronic Brake Distribution, an Electronic Stability Program, a Traction Control System, a Tyre Pressure Monitoring

System, several cameras, ISOFIX points and airbags located throughout the vehicle.

Our Verdict

HONGQI are improving every year with their premium car offerings and, if they keep up their current trajectory, could soon establish themselves a global reputation of being amongst the very finest cars on the roads today. ✤

ICONIC COUNTRY, ICONIC CAR

Qatar is the first country in the Middle East to launch the Bentayga EWB and in celebration will showcase an exclusive Qatar edition – created by the Mulliner team which excels in the creation of unique and one-off commissions that are handcrafted and personalised.

For the arrival of the Bentley flagship in Qatar, a suite of 17 special vehicles has been created. Each model in the collection has a unique specification to celebrate the country.

With a bright bespoke paint finish called Fuchsia Pearlescent, inspired by the Qatari flag, the seemingly white cars reflect a fuchsia hue upon catching the light. This is the most timeconsuming paint finish ever created for a Bentley, combining the fuchsia pearl effect with a special glass flake to create deep sparkle. To complement the Qatar flag theme, the wheels feature a threetone design with Fuchsia Pearlescent paint on the pockets, bright machined faces and fuchsia accents, in addition to the Fuchsia Pearlescent paint on the exterior to enhance the overall look with the 'Qatar Edition' logo placed around the car, including the key fob, badge, and fascia overlay.

Throughout the cabin, Linen, Damson and magenta colours are accented by geometric quilts on the seatbacks, doors and backboards. Additionally, bespoke geometric overlays inspired by arabesque mosaics were applied to the fascias, waistrails and picnic tables.

The official market launch of the Bentayga EWB alongside the unveiling of the ‘Qatar Editions by Mulliner’ took place at an exclusive event hosted by Bentley Motors and Bentley Qatar at a newly created luxury venue, The Bentley Lounge, at The Pearl. The pop-up venue will be welcoming guests throughout the World Cup and will remain open until the end of Ramadan 2023.

The Bentayga EWB offers features such as Bentley Diamond Illumination, which emits light through perforations in the softfeel door trim to illuminate the interior. The optional Airline Seat Specification elevates the rear cabin experience to enable maximum relaxation in the back, while the NAIM for Bentley offers the world’s best in-car sound system.

The exhibition will showcase a model of the Bentayga Speed, which follows the same spirit as the Qatar edition, as well as a Bentley Bentayga V8 painted in Frosty Flakes, another unique paint colour from Mulliner. The V8 will feature a 22-inch Mulliner Paragon wheel with Frosty Flakes pockets and a silver face accented by magenta accents.

The Bentayga S will also be displayed with exteriors painted in Cambrian Grey; body colour painted bright ware and two-tone black and Cambrian grey S wheels. ✤

A special black coating has been applied extensively throughout the exterior, including the blacked-out grille, bumpers, exterior mirrors, door handles and spare tyre cover. FILTERED PERFECTION

Staying hydrated is essential to our health, therefore making our daily water consumption choices important. How we go about this is up to us!

Having a cool pitcher of water always at hand is one way to go, but traditional pitchers can collect unwanted pollutants in filters where they can then quickly multiply, and reverse contaminate your water. This is where the LARQ Pitcher PureVis steps in and goes beyond basic filtration with a unique two-step filtration and purification process for pure-tasting water sip after sip.

The LARQ Pitcher PureVis eliminates a range of contaminants such as lead, mercury, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) / perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS), pharmaceuticals, VOCs and prevents the growth of other bio-contaminants. This superior filtration process is possible through their innovative plant-based filters that use ‘Nano Zero’ technology to effectively remove chemicals like chlorine and other particulates, while their proprietary PureVis (a short-wavelength ultraviolet light) technology prevents the growth of bio-contaminants and improves the taste of water.

The filters used on the LARQ Pitcher can last up to 50% longer

WATCHES PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

• BRAND IN FOCUS
Oliver Ebstein, owner and CEO of Chronoswiss, talks techniques, exclusivity and modern mechanics.

Your background is in finance and management. What made you decide to take over Chronoswiss 10 years ago?

It was a coincidence! I have a small watch collection and I’ve always been a fan of Chronoswiss. Then I met with the owner who was trying to sell his company. He grilled me and said, ‘I see you like watches. Why don’t you buy my company?’ And that’s how it started.

What makes your timepieces stand out?

Our timepieces are out of the ordinary. We try not to go with the masses. We are a small family company, so we have the beauty and the possibility of creating pieces that we, as a family, like. And I think we are very provocative in terms of colours.

How many watches do you make a year?

All of our watches are handmade and that takes time. If we look at the Open Gear ReSec Kingfisher, the dial itself consists of about 50 different parts, all assembled by hand. We only have time to make 1,500 to 2,000 pieces a year. So, we’ve decided to limit each edition to just 50 pieces. If I buy something and not everybody has it, it’s a piece of luxury. It’s nice to know you’re one of 50 and not one of 10,000!

Your company tagline is ‘modern mechanical’. What does this mean?

We chose this tagline because I like old handicrafts. We work with a 100-year-old guilloche machine to create Chronoswiss’s distinctive watch faces. We also try to preserve this old art.

fact magazine 57 BRAND IN FOCUS •

With guilloche machines, you carve out the material and when you look at it in the light, it’s reflective. The same technology was used to make Fabergé eggs. We’ve also approached modern tech companies to see if they can help us in providing exactly the right colours in terms of enamel coating. So, we use new technologies and new ways of design, while at the same time mixing them with the old world. It’s also about not losing the DNA of where we’ve come from. The onion crown is very typical of Chronoswiss – it goes on all of the watches and the casing. If you go back 40 years, it’s almost the same. So modern mechanical is not just a mix. It’s also preserving history. Even if you work with old techniques, you can be innovative in doing it differently.

Chronoswiss is famous for its ‘firsts’. You were the first watch brand to introduce a regulator on a wristwatch. You invented the skeletonised chronograph. You became the first watch brand to accept crypto currency and even opened a boutique in the Metaverse. What drives you to take these great leaps? I think as a small company, we need to try out things. And the beauty of being your own boss is that you can do this. I think the crypto – four or five years ago – was a risk but we took it because we’d met new acquaintances who were trying to pay in crypto. I can’t tell you where we’ll be in two years, but it’s been very nice to be in the Metaverse and create our own boutique, just to see how things go. We’re not afraid to take risks.

Now you are expanding into the Middle East. How will you compete in this very demanding environment?

Well, first of all, I think the Middle East is a very interesting environment. There are a lot of collectors, with a lot of watch knowledge, which you don’t find in a lot of other places. And I think it always depends on the partner to make a good entrance. We’re very happy to be here in Qatar with Al Majed Group

Holding, because if you work with family companies, they know your needs – talking with them is different to talking in big groups. And I think making an entrance in a new market for us as a family company is also about finding the right family partner. So, I think this is a big advantage for us.

What’s next for Chronoswiss? We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary in a couple of months and we’re going to create a watch that’s very innovative in terms of guilloché and of enamelling. When we talk about the future, these are the two techniques that we want to be known for. We want to use them to be one of a kind. ✤

The General Manager of The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa talks about his love for Qatar and joy in learning about new cultures.

fact magazine 60 • 5 OVER 5

What prompted you to make the move from a regional position to GM of a single property?

I have been so attracted by the wonderful development of Qatar; in my opinion, it is an amazing destination. Also, it will be the first Arab country that will be holding one of the biggest events in the world [FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022], a lot of visitors are expected and it is a one-of-a-kind experience to be part of. We are expecting a lot of visitors next year and many ongoing activities.

What would be a typical day in your current role?

If I want to describe my day, I would say it is more or less the same as any GM, we focus on all the hotel areas and departments. I personally love to spend more time in hotel operations with my team, I also like to be engaged and wellconnected with guests and business partners. Family is also very important to me and I like to have a work-life balance and spend quality time with my family here.

What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your position and how do you deal with them?

Well, I think every position has its own challenges, but I love challenges and this is what keeps me active and going. That is the beauty of any job in order not to become stale and boring.

Is The Westin your first experience in Doha and the Middle East and, if yes, how are you finding it so far?

When I was in the corporate role I had Middle East experience as I was looking after the MEA region for a year. I love it here because it is a dynamic and competitive market.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work and what would you recommend to others in Qatar?

I am always fascinated by learning about the local cultures and, within the last three months, I have been to a few amazing places. I can definitely recommend visiting the National Museum, Katara and Souq Wakif. ✤

FROM THE LEVANT TO THE GULF

Antonios Souss, the new Executive Chef at voco Doha West Bay Suites, talks about his culinary journey.

fact magazine 62 • CHEF IN FOCUS

Your career spans more than two decades, how did it all begin?

My first job was at a pizza restaurant in my hometown when I was 14 years old. I began working after school as a teenager. It was a personal decision that I made, to start supporting myself and help my parents. I will never forget the moment I tried to give my mother my first salary and she said: “You have earned this money through your hard work, so it is yours.” I have never forgotten how I felt when she said that and I carry those words with me even today.

You've worked in luxury hotels in Lebanon and India, including working as a private chef for royalty in Saudi Arabia, what was that experience like for you?

It was a great experience for sure – living in different cultures and with different traditions. Meeting various people, learning their way of life and their mentality helped me gain a lot of experience. I have a thirst for knowledge, so it was incredible to learn about different types of cuisines that helped in improving my culinary skills. In fact, being a chef, you are constantly learning something new.

You've been creating new menus at voco Doha West Bay Suites, what can guests expect in the new lineup?

At voco, guests can expect a warm welcome and a very comfortable stay. With regard to the menus, they will experience a lot of exciting offers. The dishes give a comfort food vibe, just like home-cooked meals, making them memorable. We cater to all kinds of palates: Italian, Asian, Indian, European and many more.

What are your favourite dishes on the menu and do you have a signature dish?

As a chef, every dish is a signature dish! The kitchen is a big, wide, open door for creativity and as I create numerous types of cuisine, my favourite dishes are the ones where diners can feel my passion and the love that I put into cooking. I highly recommend you all to come and try the experience, and we’ll do our best to make it a memorable and unforgettable one. See you all at voco Doha West Bay Suites! ✤

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN
Ali Gharib, Executive Chef at AlRayyan Hotel Doha, Curio Collection by Hilton talks culinary passion and home cooking.

You have more than 20 years of culinary experience, what inspired you to go into this unique profession?

It's something I've always wanted to do, I studied IT at university but I've always loved food, in fact I am in love with food! I adore identifying spices and herbs. I am also very fussy when it comes to food. I had too many bad experiences in restaurants, I found too many mistakes. I didn't enjoy eating out. So, I began working in a hotel kitchen and then a pastry shop in Lebanon.

Since joining AlRayyan Hotel Doha, you've been redesigning menus for Mezzo Restaurant, Moda Lounge, in-room dining, events and outside catering. What new changes can we look forward to?

We recently launched a new Mezzo menu, which is a preview of our new à la carte menu. There's a new brunch menu too, which will feature live-cooking stations and a fresh pasta station, which we put in a Parmigiano cheese wheel. We're also expanding our breakfast menu to include some international crowd pleasers. There will also be some local specialities like Balaleet, which is saffron-scented vermicelli topped with cardamom-scented eggs!

Is there a dish that is a personal favourite of yours and what is your signature dish?

I love seafood, so the Octopus Capaccio is my favourite dish on the menu. It has a very distinctive texture and great flavours of the sea, without being too overpowering.

I introduced it on the menu because it's my favourite and it's a distinguished addition. My signature dish is the Lamb Freekeh, because I love lamb. This is a popular meal that is still made in my home town, so it's very special to me. I have a personal connection to this dish as my mum used to make this for me when I was growing up.

When you're not busy in the kitchens, how do you like to relax in Qatar?

I've only been in Qatar for a few months, so I am still discovering the country and local flavours. But I love the beautiful beach scenery. After a long day I also like to talk to my daughters in Lebanon and make time for my family.

I also enjoy listening to classical French music to unwind on my days off. ✤

LIVING UP TO THE HYPE

Bianca Apps headed to Banana Island Resort Doha to discover a dining experience in delightful surroundings.

After a wonderfully relaxing and quite blissful spa treatment, we were rejuvenated and excited to try the famous and celebrated Arabic restaurant, Al Nahham.

One of my favourite things about this resort is that even the transportation from one venue to another is an adventure, with each journey offering a new perspective of this gorgeous, azure coastal gem. On leaving the tranquil spa haven, we eagerly boarded the waiting golf cart and were on our way to the north of the island to enjoy an Arabic feast!

As we pulled up to the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by Al Nahham's smiling staff, chef and manager, and we immediately felt so welcomed and comfortable. Moving inside, we noticed right away the elegant design and decor with authentic Arabic art and products throughout, adding a subtle and sophisticated cultural vibe. With its high ceilings, sweeping views of the ocean and soothing ambience, we were tempted to sit inside, but with the sun beginning to set, we were ultimately drawn to the large sun-drenched terrace overhanging the sea. After choosing our spot, we took a minute to take in the pure serenity and natural beauty of the vast waters and bright blue sky. The gentle burble of the waves lapping against the rocks below and the breathtaking vistas combine to make the setting a stunning lunch location. We were thrilled to check out the menu and, with a wide array of options to choose from, we enlisted the help of our friendly waiter for recommendations. He was very knowledgeable about all the dishes and made some interesting suggestions. As we

fact magazine 67 CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

considered our options, we were served an exquisite hibiscus and rose water-based mocktail (karkade special). Each sip was packed with flavour and the fresh and fragrant hibiscus aroma delighted the senses. We decided to try some of our favourites and a few of the restaurant’s unique variations. To start, we had avocado hummus, lamb pide, batata harra and stuffed vine leaves (warak enab bil zaite). While all of them were delicious, the avocado hummus was the star of this quartet with a velvety texture, vibrant green colour and the avocado really punctuating the taste! I would never usually think to combine these flavours, but it was a mouthwatering mix that we will undoubtedly be ordering every time! The lamb pide was also very well done; minced lamb served hot on thin Arabic bread with a side of yoghurt that perfectly enhanced the bold flavours. The batata harra – potato cubes with garlic, coriander, lemon and chilli – was a delicious dish in its own right and the perfect accompaniment for the other starters. Last but not least, the stuffed vine leaves filled with seasoned rice, tomato, mint and parsley were also some of the best we've had in Qatar. For our main course, we chose the seafood platter and the mixed grill, which allowed us to sample a great variety of superb specialities, complemented with bursts of flavour from an assortment of sauces and dips. The seafood platter was particularly impressive, with a generous serving of grilled king prawns, lobster, hammour fillet and calamari. In my previous experience, the smokiness of a barbecue can sometimes overpower some white fish and delicate shellfish; however, each offering on the Al Nahham seafood platter maintained its fresh and scrumptious flavour while still guaranteeing the rich smokiness. The exceptional lobster and king prawns stole the show, with melt-in-the-mouth decadence and sizable portions boasting a smooth and delectable barbecue taste! The hammour and calamari were also perfectly seasoned and cooked. The savoury seafood treats were juxtaposed with the bold, equally appetising charcoal mixed grill. This was also a winner, arriving on an actual barbecue grill, with coals still smouldering beneath and warming the lamb chops, kebab, kofta and chicken shish taouk with grilled vegetables. Of course, we took the opportunity to add some side dishes and the staff gladly proposed familiar favourite Arabic salads. Altogether, this tabletop of colourful and fresh

flavours created a truly spectacular lunch treat that captivated our taste buds and senses. Although we were already ecstatic and very satisfied after this feast, when our charming waiter excitedly suggested different speciality beverage options, we couldn't turn down their signature pina colada mocktail. With the sun slowly dipping closer to the horizon, we sipped on the smooth yet zesty, sweet pineapple drink and enjoyed the peaceful ambience, reflecting on what was the perfect day on Banana Island Resort Doha. We had heard so many amazing things about Al Nahham’s chef and his team, along with their extensive selection of unique dishes, that I had found myself wondering how Al Nahham could match our extremely high expectations. Happily, the hype surrounding the fan-favourite culinary destination is very well deserved and their customer service, presentation and overall quality were top notch. ✤

AL FRESCO

MEDITERRANEAN VIBES

Luke Bennett found good food and a great atmosphere at The Mondrian’s latest venue.

Stepping into Walima at The Mondrian, you’d be forgiven for thinking not a lot has changed. However, continue your journey out onto the newly refurbished terrace and you’ll instantly understand the excitement building around this venue. Welcome to The Patio by Walima, the uber stylish outdoor lounge area that is sure to be a hit on Doha’s social circuit. Here you’ll find a selection of high-top stools and tables, perfect for sipping long drinks and listening to the latest tunes, along with a mixture of cushioned, lounging chairs in which to fully appreciate the perfect weather and al fresco vibes. If you are seeking a stylish bar or a relaxed, chilled experience, The Patio by Walima has your desires covered in an elegant and surprisingly spacious outdoor setting. As you select your seating preference, your eyes will instantly be drawn to the striking views across Doha’s skyline, and three imposing digital screens that flicker dazzling images to the beat of the music. The Patio has been revamped with an elevated DJ area centred between two open-air bars serving up a wealth of beverages for you to enjoy. Rotating strobe lighting adds to the club-like ambience.

The setting isn’t the only aspect that has been overhauled; now encompassing a wider variety of cuisines from across the globe, the new menu focuses mainly on an exciting assortment of hot and cold appetisers, designed to share. While I rejoiced in the trendy atmosphere, an eclectic mix of dishes arrived at our table. A trio of smooth hummus dips complemented with cruditѐs and shards of crispy zaatar bread was my first port of call. The squash hummus delivered the sweetness; the chipotle hummus offered the spice. Next up was a plentiful portion of moreish, smoky Potatoes Bravas that

fact magazine 71 DINING DELIGHT •

were lighted brushed with a punchy, Peruvian cheese sauce and topped with fresh chilli and shavings of Manchego cheese. The other appetisers truly showcased the newly enhanced culinary options on offer. Firstly, the Tomatino salad was simplicity at its finest – a perfect blend of fresh, juicy cherry tomatoes and the saltness of feta cheese made for a mouthful of flavoursome food. If that wasn’t enough, generous wedges of perfectly toasted focaccia bread made for wonderful dipping agents. The final sharing dish that I sampled was Tiradito Nikkei. ‘Tiradito’ refers to delicate tranches of seabass bathed in a zesty, ponzu sauce and ‘Nikkei’ indicates the South American-Japanese fusion with which this delectable dish was prepared. It was, quite simply, a pleasure. If you are a reluctant sharer of food like me, do not fear! There is a considered selection of main courses that mostly pay homage to Arabic cuisine: a traditional Mixed Grill and Lamb Chops to name a few. I opted for a dish that I frequently enjoy – Shish Taouk. It’s no secret that the basis of a delicious Shish Taouk lies within the marinading and cooking of the meat. Pleasingly, the plentiful chunks of chicken breast were perfectly grilled – lightly charred yet still moist and tender with a subtle, smoky flavouring. For a more international flavour, the second main I sampled was the Seafood Creamy Paella. The chef utilises saffron and piquillo peppers to develop a sweeter flavour and lessens the undertones of fish that you’d normally associate with Spanish Paella. Despite the soft, creamy nature of the sauce, the rice was by no means sticky and retained the ‘bite’ you’d expect from this well-known dish. Scattered generously across the bed of rice was an assortment of voluptuous shrimp, rings of tender squid and tasty mussels.

Just like the main options, the desserts offered up many Middle

Eastern classics. I was extremely tempted by my personal favourite, Umm Ali. However, feeling adventurous, I ordered Olive Oil Cake whose sponge mixture of Greek yoghurt and olive oil was surprisingly light and soft. Wrapped around the sponge was a pistachio glace that added a ‘snap’, and a mixture of velvety cream and zesty lemon peaks adorned the cake. If you were to order just one dessert, you must try the Dark Equatorial Chocolate Tart. Wow! Three layers of utter indulgence. At the base you’ll find a crumbly chocolate sponge; the middle layer provides a rich, dark chocolate ganache; and the top layer is a perfectly piped, sweet Jivara ganache. Wait, there’s more… a light quenelle of vanilla ice cream brings some freshness and crushed chocolate soil adds a welcomed textural element of crunch. A truly ‘must-try’ dish even for those diners who do not possess an overly sweet tooth. The vision behind the recent renovation was to provide Doha with an establishment that exudes the sophistication of an international rooftop bar minus any unnecessary pretention. Without extravagant or elaborate decor, The Mondrian has achieved a perfect blend of chic, downtown Beirut and chilled Ibiza bar vibes. Now that the cooler months have arrived, The Patio by Walima provides an ideal location to enjoy ‘the golden hour’ with a beverage of your choosing; share and snack on a variety of appetising dishes from around the world; rejoice with a selection of hubbly bubbly; or bust out some dance moves as the music ramps up. ✤

A MEATY AFFAIR

Carnivores alert! Ailsa Whyatt spends a delightful evening at Hunters Room & Grill at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa and shares her dining experience with us.

Ido love steak. It’s one of life’s great pleasures, especially when this pleasure involves a trip to Hunters Room & Grill at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa. New on the Doha food scene, Hunters’ Chef de Cuisine Roberto Guerrero has wasted no time in launching a set menu grounded in his Venezuelan roots. Hot lemongrass towels refresh us whilst Roberto proudly brings forth the steak trolley, talking us through the cuts.

A great steak is a trademark of Hunters. The Black Onyx Collection hails from a single farm in Australia and is crucially 100% Angus beef throughout, which means you can have your favourite steak time and again, knowing that it will always be good. High-grade cuts are paraded in front of us and we marvel at the marble. The fat melts into the meat as it is cooked, producing the fullest of flavours and softest of textures. There’s also a range of à la carte offerings and the all-important set menu, with which we are about to be on first-name terms.

Hot on Roberto’s heels is Silvanus, a proud purveyor and producer of drinks. His trolley is laden with an array of glasses, botanicals, garnishes, spritzers and Silvanus’ new ‘flavour blaster’ , which produces a perfectly formed bubble of smoke that pops as it hits the contents of your glass. It’s such fun and his concoctions are delicious.

Roberto is back in a flash with our starters. So recent was its conception that the Surf & Turf appetiser hasn’t even made it onto the menu yet. Never fear, dear reader, it will be there by the time you visit, and I implore you to try this dish. A showstopping, live cooking dish in which Wagyu tenderloin, seasoned and marinated in olive oil, is blow-torched in front of our very eyes, topped with some delicately grilled scallops. The dish comes sizzling to the table on its own grill, with a confit of roasted cherry tomatoes and a beef sauce. It is crowned with a black squid-ink tuile in the shape of a doily, delicately decorated with beads of tomato emulsion and micro-herbs. The tomatoes burst with flavour and the Wagyu beef is tender and meaty. The tuile has a gentle crunch, giving it a wonderful complementary texture, and the scallops, well frankly, I’ll do anything for scallops, so I’m quietly wondering if I should leave now as surely this meal cannot get any better. But there is more. Much more.

The Tomato Tartare appears, heirloom tomatoes full of smoky flavours and accompanied by a very creamy mozzarella di bufala mousse, surrounded by more tomatoey goodness. Miniscule curls of courgette are lifted by shreds of pickled onions and a zesty lime dressing. We also try the Salmon Acevichado, a dish that is ‘eaten outside on benches in Venezuela’ according to Roberto. The salmon is cured with beetroot and orange for 12 hours and is served with a special tiger milk sauce made from the cooked juices of a grouper fish, green droplets of dill-infused olive oil, smoked chilli oil and crumbled tapioca crackers. The salmon is meltingly soft, the tiger milk has hints of lemon and the herbs and crackers produce not only fresh and new flavours but add colour to this beautiful dish.

It’s time to indulge in our mains, the Black Asado & Mango and Churrasco. Black Asado is a Tajima Wagyu short rib, slowly cooked in sous vide (a method of cooking in which the meat is vacuum-sealed and immersed in warm water) for 15 hours. There’s no burning or smoking involved; it’s purely cooked to

reabsorb colour and flavour, giving the meat its black exterior. It is served in a monochrome presentation on a black plate with a creamy black squid-ink mash and a rather intriguing napkin-shaped, smoked eggplant. It’s like an edible black paper serviette, along with a mango confit and pickled caramelised onions for sweetness. This dish is striking, soft and one of a kind. Our mains crescendo with the Churrasco, a perfect medium rare piece of Angus flank steak. This sweet and nutty delight provides an anchor for the wonderfully rich gravy. The grilled broccoli melts like a crisp in the mouth with confit leek and a fresh yet unimposing broccoli chimichurri. The spectacular flavours of blue cheese and truffle warm the dish and complement the cashew purée; yes, you heard right! For me, it stole the show. I would eat this again and again and then some more if I could. We close our meal with an Apple Crumble with vanilla ice cream whilst enjoying a Rusty Nail drink from Silvanus. Granny Smith apples and cinnamon are the trademark of this crunchy-topped crumble, served with a quenelle of vanilla ice cream, atop which rests a gorgeously crafted hexagonal honeycomb tuile. Hunters is undeniably a premium and delicious offering for steak lovers, which is reason enough to visit. However, I urge you to go there not just for steak, because there is so much more to enjoy. Its warming comfort food straight from Venezuela and the perfect ‘something sweet’ on which we end the finest of dining sums up the experience. Chef Roberto has an eye for detail, a flare for ingenuity and a hearty welcome that leaves me feeling as if I were visiting him at his home in Venezuela. I shall return! ✤

THE LITTLE BIG BRAND

Parisian celeb favourite Destree will grace the new Printemps Doha bringing French savoir faire to the Qatari capital.

Founded in 2016 by designer Geraldine Guyot and Laetitia Lumbroso, who are joint CEOs, the brand is characterised by structured, almost architectural designs.

Destree first launched online and wholesale selling hats, later moving into bags – which provide arm candy for the likes of Beyoncé – jewellery and clothing. These days, there are points of sale across the globe, a flagship store in Paris and major expansion plans, including the Middle East.

This comes on the back of a round of funding earlier this year that saw the company, which at the time had just eight employees, gain investment from an all-female group of businesswomen including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Alba and Gisele Bundchen. Co-founder Laetitia ( pictured right ) explained: “In the team the first salaries [staff] were women, it’s not because we don’t want men, we were looking for someone and it so happened that it was women.” However, when it came to securing future funding, she added: “Some men wanted to invest but we said no, we only wanted women.” Destree’s instantly recognisable pieces weave a story of colourful passion interlaced with a distinct Parisian style that will grace the shelves of a shop-in-shop at Printemps Doha where visitors can expect elements of the flagship store in the French capital, such as jewellery displayed on sculptures. Asked what prompted the brand to choose Printemps and the Qatari capital, Laetitia said: “Printemps has been a partner since the beginning of the brand in Paris, so we’ve worked with them on all our accessories. As soon as they mentioned that they were coming to Qatar, we wanted to be part of it. Qatar is a country where art is important, you have those amazing museums, you have the link between all that Shaikha Al-Mayassa is doing for art, for design and for fashion and for art in general. For Destree, as art is the heart of the brand, that was a link and a connection that was pretty immediate. So, Qatar and Printemps were both reasons for us to come here.”

Perhaps the house’s most recognisable pieces are the bags which are said to be at the heart of the collections ‘rooted in mineral and tangy tones, worn like jewels, objects of the heart’. And these will, of course, be part of the Qatar offering but there’s more excitement to come in-store. Laetitia explained: “So, our iconic bags and jewellery will be presented in Printemps, we also have some exclusive products just for Qatar for Printemps which you won’t find anywhere else. We also are planning to do a ready-towear pop-up in February for the global launch, to have something very exclusive for Qatar for ready-to-wear.” ✤

The first edition of ‘The Collective’ programme put the spotlight on exceptional new talents and I look forward to seeing them showcase their collections in Printemps Doha.”

“We are thrilled to announce the seven local designers as part of the inaugural edition of ‘The Collective’ programme. We recognised their incredible talents, personal storytelling and strong brand DNA and we are excited to provide support and one-on-one mentorship sessions to the designers as they embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey,” added Maha AlSulaiti, M7 Director. “Together with Printemps Doha, we work to ensure that emerging designers have the right tools and guidance to prepare themselves to enter the retail market. HOLIDAY MAGIC MEETS ‘70S DISCO

Brasserie Hennes, the H&M café concept, introduced earlier in the year to take fashionistas on a peoplewatching journey to the streets of Paris, has been reimagined for the festive season with a distinctly party vibe.

Transformed into a disco-inspired snowscape for the holidays – it's cosy, inviting and buzzing with festive excitement with actress Chloë Sevigny and musician Anderson Paak shining like stars wearing the sparkling new collection. For girls, key pieces include a soft pink suit, a pink, longsleeved, sparkle dress, a black fringe dress with elements of sequins and a high-necked, silver sequined dress. While the guys’ collection has a distinctly ‘70s feel with animal print shirts, a resurgence of the decade’s ubiquitous brown colour and a classic tux jacket. Described as ‘a banquet of style, encouraging confidence with its irresistible colours and textures’, the selection sure lives up to the hype and has a definite party-ready focus. Statement accessories such as dazzling rhinestone sunnies, bold pink rhinestone earrings and a diamanté draping bra, all crave the spotlight. Shimmering platform heels, over-the-knee black heeled boots and candy pink pumps are ideal for the dance floor.

Speaking about the shoot, Anderson Paak said: “I had a great time working with H&M and the amazing cast in the magical world within Brasserie Hennes. It’s all about living in the moment and truly celebrating life with those around you, especially around this time of year. It really got me in the holiday spirit.” ✤ GO: VISIT QA.HM.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

FROM PHOTOGRAPHER TO MODEL

Self-taught photographer and videographer Abdelaziz Al Safadi, otherwise known as Instagrammer @withazoz, has been a busy guy both travelling and with high-level collabs that have seen him strutting his stuff for Prada. He talks to FACT about how he got started and his journey on the social media platform.

A little bit of background first – how old are you and, if not from Qatar, where are you from? And is photography (IG) your full-time job?

I was born in Doha with Palestinian roots. Creating digital content started off as a hobby and over the last two years has become a part-time job.

When did you first start taking pictures and what inspired you to do so?

I started taking pictures when I was around 12 years old, I have loved photography since I was a kid and I always believe that there’s a beauty in everything. You just need to find the right way to show it.

How did you go about learning the craft and moving into videography?

Technology is amazing, most of what I’ve learned about photography came from watching others shoot, coupled with teaching myself with Youtube videos too.

What led you to setting up WithAzoz? How long has your blog been running and how have you grown your following?

I’ve been working on WithAzoz throughout the last four years, it’s been a beautiful journey and progress with a lot of planning and I’m very happy that now I’m reaching all of my audience locally and internationally.

You’ve had some pretty high-profile collaborations with the likes of Visit Oman and The Ritz-Carlton, Doha. How did these come about? How did you feel about working with such iconic names?

Visit Oman was my most recent project and what an amazing experience it’s been. Working with the RitzCarlton, Doha marketing team was one of the highlights of the season.

And, with Prada, you are on the other side of the camera. Did you ever see yourself in the role of model? How does it feel to be the one in the pictures for a change? Being selected to be dressed by Prada was really special, it’s something different yet exciting and I’m ready to do more.

Do you have any other big collabs coming up and what else can your followers expect from you in the future? I will be working on several exciting projects over the next few months and really look forward to sharing them with everyone. Recently, I was one of the first to be invited and did full coverage of MSC World Europa [the huge cruise ship that is currently operating as a hotel in Qatar for the World Cup]. It was a great opportunity and experience as well, I was surprised by the high level of standards and luxury, and the coverage went viral, all over Doha especially. The reel was super successful and gained so many views and great feedback. ✤

SPLENDID SOUTH AFRICA

Culturally diverse and offering a wide range of experiences, South Africa, also known as the Rainbow Nation, is a great winter destination.

• TRAVEL
Cape Town

Having a rich history and multicultural environment, the Republic of South Africa has so much to offer the discerning traveller, from museums and vibrant neighbourhoods to bustling streets and markets. Further, it’s biodiversity is truly worth exploring on a safari. December marks the start of summer in the Southern Hemisphere, ushering in toasty, pleasant climes – the ideal winter escape. We explore three well-known cities, offering a mix of touristy and off-beat activities and attractions.

CAPE TOWN

South Africa’s fight against apartheid is intricately woven into its rich history. Visit Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is located about four hours from Cape Town. It’s where Nelson Mandela, the country’s most iconic and inspirational leader, spent many of his prison days. You can easily get a ferry from Nelson Mandela Gateway at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. While you’re there, tour the prison and visit the island’s museum. You can also enjoy stunning views of Table Mountain and the surrounding ocean from here.

Table Mountain is a major tourist landmark and natural haven, with thousands of plant species. Enjoy breathtaking views of Cape Town while riding a cable car. There are many hiking routes here as well. Make a pit stop at the popular Table Mountain Café before heading to the Cape of Good Hope, which lies within the Table Mountain National Park. It’s known for Boulder Penguin Beach, where you can see the birds flocking together. Cape Point is popular for its beaches. Nestled at the base of Table Mountain is Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a must-visit for nature lovers. Home to a variety of plants, it’s also a haven for birds. You can spend at least half a day here, leisurely strolling, taking in the mesmerising views from the Tree Canopy Walkway or bridge, stopping by the Tea Room to unwind for a bit… the gardens also host art exhibitions and other events. Walk the cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap, said to be the oldest surviving residential area of Cape Town, which used to be a slave colony. Today, however, is a vibrant cityscape with brightly coloured houses, which are said to be an expression of freedom.

Located just 3km away from Bo-Kaap is the V&A Waterfront. It offers an urban, touristy experience, replete with shopping, dining and more. However, it’s also a good place to get a taste of the local culture. While attractions such as the Two Oceans Aquarium are more commercial, there are off-beat activities to enjoy such as shopping at Greenmarket Square. It’s dotted with stalls selling souvenirs and crafts – don’t forget to haggle!

JOHANNESBURG

You can’t leave South Africa without experiencing a Big Five safari. Big Five refers to the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo, large mammals that were difficult to stalk and hence, considered a feat by trophy hunters.

Thankfully, these days, we’re more about just seeing rather than killing them and Pilanesberg National Park, which is about three hours from Johannesburg, offers one-day right up to five-day safaris. It’s surreal to watch the animals in their natural habitat and if you’re lucky, you may spot one or more of the Big Five! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure where you can cut off from the hustle bustle and connect with the scenic wonder that is South Africa. If you plan to stay overnight, you can use the lodge facilities at the park. Spend a day walking around Joburg inner city, admiring the street art, visiting the art galleries and unwinding at the many cafes. Striking murals by both international and local artists adorn buildings, creating a vibrant atmosphere around metropolitan areas such as the Maboneng precinct, Jeppestown and Newtown. Johannesburg Art Gallery, the largest on the continent, houses international and local exhibits, including art from as far back as the 17th century. Apartheid Museum, the first-of-its-kind, is home to carefully curated film footage, photographs, text panels and artefacts. They illustrate the horrific stories from this unfortunate period in history. In addition to the main exhibition, there are temporary displays, as well as one dedicated to Nelson Mandela, a central figure in the fight against apartheid. A tour of Mandela House or Nelson Mandela National Museum will offer insights into the life of this revered South African leader. Managed by the Apartheid Museum on behalf of Soweto Heritage Trust, it’s a single-story, redbrick building, a testament to Mandela’s humble life during the struggle. A 20-minute tour will take you around the home’s original furnishings, memorabilia and photographs.

Durban

You can buy souvenirs such as books, CDs and other items from the shop here.

Those with a penchant for archeology must visit Maropeng Visitors Centre and the Sterkfontein Cave, located an hour from Johannesburg. The former is an exhibition that takes you on an interesting journey about human evolution. The caves contain fossils, including those of Mrs. Ples – our biped ancestor – and Little Foot – an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton dating back more than three million years.

DURBAN

Durban is home to numerous coastal areas where you can swim and enjoy a range of water activities. Golden Mile, a beachfront promenade, is a major attraction. In addition to a long stretch of beaches, you also have many high-rise hotels, restaurants and shopping centres here. New Pier Beach is a popular spot for surfers. A shortish drive from Durban will take you to Umhlanga Rocks, which is also dotted with beautiful beaches. You have plenty of things to do here, including surfing, scuba diving and kiteboarding. There are many restaurants, premium bed-and-breakfast venues and hotels too.

Get your retail therapy at the Indian Quarter – Durban has a thriving South Asian community. You will find the best bargains at Victoria Street Market including spices, incense and trinkets. Florida Road is another must-visit, especially after sunset. Lined with numerous cafes, eateries, boutiques and art galleries, the street comes alive at night. You can also spot preserved Edwardian structures that are more than 100 years old. Don’t forget to try Bunny Chow, a simple yet flavour-packed local dish with Indian influences. It’s basically curry in a bowl, only the bowl is a loaf of bread that’s been hollowed out.

Extend your tryst with nature at Durban Botanic Gardens. Said to be the oldest surviving botanical garden in Africa, it is home to numerous indigenous plant species, some of

which are more than 100 years old. Don’t miss the Trail of Lights event, a charitable happening with food, shopping and festive lights, which will run through to January 2, 2023. In addition to flora, you can also find many bird species residing here.

Umgeni River Bird Park is another attraction. The park is spread across eight acres of lush tropical landscaping, with several natural waterfalls. You will find more than 800 birds from as many as 200 species here. The park works toward conserving many endangered species; there’s a nursery where you can see how birds are hatched and raised. There are aviaries and open exhibits too, as well as a free-flight bird show that you must not miss. ✤

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE, POP

The Loneliest Time

Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Former Canadian Idol second runner-up, she shot to fame with her hit single Call Me Maybe in 2012. She has released six studio albums including T he Loneliest Time. The LP opens with Surrender My Heart , which gives ‘70s disco vibes, with up-tempo music, drums and synthesisers, in keeping with Jepsen’s pop influences and musical style. But there are also some very thoughtful lyrics. “So, I've been tryin' hard to open up. When I lost someone, it hit me rough I paid to toughen up in therapy. She said to me, “Soften Up””. The lyrics, seemingly inspired by experience, are easy to relate to, not unlike other songs by Jepsen, who’s known for her catchy lyrics.

Lead single Western Wind has a soulful melody and is a reminiscent love song asking, “Do you remember a conversation With our heads against the pillow?” It’s different from the opening song, a trend that continues throughout the LP; each song has a distinct personality, a major case in point being Beach House , a bouncy number but with resentful undertones. “Boys around the world I want to believe that when you chase a girl It's not just hunting season.”

Love and unrequited love seem to be major themes throughout; bittersweet longing, heartbreak, cynicism, the excitement of falling in love again… This love anthem will take you through all of it and more.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

Inner World Peace

Greta Kline is an American musician, singer and songwriter. Formerly known as Frankie Cosmos, which is now the name of her band, she released Inner World Peace via Sub Pop. There are 15 songs on the LP, which features strings, drums and the piano. The music is easy going, the ideal backdrop for a long drive to nowhere.

The album opens with Abigail and right away you know this is going to be one of those personal account kinds of albums. Heavy with emotion, it leaves room for interpretation. “If I die right now, I need you to see Abigail, I want you to be alive with me” points to loss and subsequent loneliness. You begin to understand the reasoning behind the catchy album title – Inner World Peace. Aftershock comes next, offering the same pace and melody only to reveal a plot twist midway; the song’s sound changes, a creative touch by Kline, which makes you want to know what more is in store. Fruit Stand continues with the loss or left-lonely-behind theme, which seems to be a major inspiration. Magnetic Personality ups the tempo of the album, which eventually closes with Heed The Call , again a slow number. This one will make a place in the hearts of Indie music lovers.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Magic Moments Expensive Footwear Presents Or Presence

As with every major sporting event, the FIFA World Cup has not been without its controversies but there have been some truly heartwarming moments and stories too. The Japanese fans cleaning up the stadiums after their matches prompting others to follow suit. The absolute joy of the Japanese at their unlikely win over Germany. But, for us, and we suspect for many around the world, the one stand-out moment of the tournament so far has to be Saudi Arabia beating the giants of Argentina. The sheer jubilation (and, almost, disbelief) of the players, the absolute ecstasy of the fans and the team’s adoption by pretty much the whole of the Middle East has been amazing to see. And then there was that half-time speech with coach Hervé Renard, loudly exhorting his team to play the football of their lives (and the equally animated delivery from the translator). As we go to press, we don’t know if Saudi will go any further in the competition but we’re sure we’re not the only ones wishing them the very best of luck!

When we think of highly priced shoes, the mind generally runs to those red-soled confections from Christian Louboutin or the Manolos much loved by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City . To be honest, we’d be thinking of pretty much anything other than a tatty pair of 50-yearold Birkenstocks. Wouldn’t you? So, it came as a bit of a shock that just such a pair of ‘well-used brown suede

A million-dollar-earning UK mum, who also happens to be a newsworthy CEO of a large supermarket chain, has said she’ll only be buying one present each for her twin six-year-old daughters this year. Shirine Khoury-Haq told The Guardian that she couldn’t ‘in good conscience’ give them more while millions of families are struggling. Meanwhile mum-of-four Courtney Tillia, from Los Angeles, will be splashing out after quitting her teaching job and joining OnlyFans to make ends meet. And Sarah

Birkenstocks’ had sold for a record of nearly USD220,000 at a recent sale by Julien’s Auctions in the USA. OK, so the Birks in question belonged to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and, dating from the 1970s, he was quite possibly wearing them as he paced the floor during the creation and early days of the computer giant. But, really, USD220,000 for a pair or worn sandals, that’s bonkers. Though it might convince the boss to lift the office Birks ban.

Moore, from the UK, got some online flack after sharing a TikTok video of the huge pile of toys she’s bought for 18-month-old daughter, Alya – though the trolls did take a bit of a back seat when Sarah explained that she has congenital heart disease and doesn’t know how many Christmases she will get to spend with the tot. So, what is it about the festive season that makes some of us go a bit shopping crazy? And do our kids really need mountains of gifts? In truth, wouldn’t they really rather have our time?
