I— Mary Anne Radmacher “
“May your walls know joy, may every room hold laughter and every window open to great possibility.”
t’s the last issue of the year and, as always, I’m asking myself ‘where have the last 12 months gone?’ It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating Ramadan and now, here we are, getting ready for the festivities of Qatar National Day and the festive season.
If you’re still planning what to do over the holidays, we’ve got plenty of ideas for the patriotic celebrations with fireworks, activities and more. There’s also loads of info on festive dining and the very best ways to see in 2025.
I’ve been busy this month, checking out great food, from a cosy Italian to some regional favourites, while my colleagues dined on Chinese and burgers and enjoyed an exceptional garden experience.
I also visited Mina Hotel, nestled in the picture-perfect surroundings of Old Doha Port, and took a fairy tale journey into the design stories of Mondrian Doha – what an extraordinary destination it is.
Renowned Peruvian culinary master Chef Gastón Acurio was in town and we took the opportunity to chat to him about representing his country on the international culinary stage. We also chatted with Radek Cais, Multi-Property GM of Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme, Agora Autograph Collection and the coming Palais Vendôme, Doha, a Luxury Collection Hotel,
Alongside news from Qatar’s motoring sector, we’ve got our usual roundups of titbits from the worlds of tech and fashion and loads of events coming up around the city.
As the year ends, I wish you Happy Holidays and all the best for 2025.

Get ready to touch the sky in a colourful balloon.
It’s that time of the year when you get to soar over Qatar’s skies and savour bird's-eye views of the city. Yes, we’re talking about the annual Qatar Balloon Festival. In its fifth edition, the festival will run from December 12 to 21. It aims to top its successful past editions.
You can enjoy sunrise balloon launches, which offer great views of the sun rising over the Qatari landscape. More than 50 balloons will take off during these sessions. So, you'll want to rise early and be in one of them, rather than being the one looking up.
The event also demonstrates the professional tethering of the balloon. It then hovers over the ground as a static marvel for you to admire at any time. After sundown, the colourful balloons will be lit up from within, creating a vibrant atmosphere and a splendid light show.
The excitement doesn’t end once the balloons descend to the ground post-sunset. Laser and flame shows will light up the sky in a dazzling display, creating astounding patterns that dance to the rhythm of foottapping music.
A playground awaits those looking for fun games, where a variety of options is available for little ones and adults alike. Themed jumping houses and slides and games like football, darts, VR and carnival games can be equally
enjoyed by people of all ages.
And it’s not just balloons heading skywards, as colourful, eye-catching kites will also vie for space. Children can take part in kite-building workshops, which will give them a chance to explore their creativity. These are hands-on sessions where kids can create their kites from scratch, colouring and decorating them in lively hues. Once ready, they also get the chance to fly their creations.
You can also take the exclusive opportunity to observe the building of a hot air balloon, as seamsters stitch the giant globes right before your eyes. You can watch the entire process the balloon goes through – right from the stitching of the fabrics to taking flight upon completion.
Amid all the fun and entertainment, you can take care of your hunger pangs at the kiosks and food trucks that will dish out some of the yummiest fare. Overall, it’s a fun day out for the whole family. From bright balloons to games and music, there's something for everyone at the Qatar Balloon Festival. ✤

An exciting series of bustling activities is lined up to celebrate the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
The Katara Cultural Village Foundation has partnered with the British Council and the British Embassy to create a vibrant cultural programme to celebrate the ninth edition of the Qatar-UK Cultural Festival, which runs until December 6. The event highlights themes of community, cultural exchanges and people-to-people connection. The occasion also marks the British Council’s 90th anniversary in the country.
A series of events is taking place across various venues, including Katara Cultural Village and Doha Design District at Msheireb Downtown Doha. Key events include ‘Up to Us’ – an abaya exhibition. This is a project that delves into identity through clothing and involves an exhibition, school workshops and a film, followed by a panel discussion on people from different communities living in Qatar. ‘See Things Differently’ presents a photography contest called ‘Great Stories’, to celebrate creativity and connection. Also, there’s a series of podcast interviews with 90 influential stakeholders to honour the contributions that have shaped the success of the British Council over the past nine decades. Apart from these, an array of musical events ensures the audience is entertained throughout the festival. The lively events include the European Jazz Festival, which has performances by leading Qatari and UK artists. Pianist and composer Huw Warren, one of Wales’ best-known jazz musicians, in collaboration with the European Union
National Institute for Culture, Katara Cultural Village Foundation and the Welsh Government, is one to look out for. He will be performing with his band Cowbois and Shepherds. And there’ll be a DJ set by Mo Ayoub of the Selector Radio Show to ensure that visitors have a gala time letting their hair down.
The exhibition is open to everyone for free. It affords a perfect opportunity for locals and expats to explore different cultures. His Excellency, the British Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Neerav Patel, said: “This is a festival for everyone. It showcases the power of art, music, photography and shared stories to link people of all ages and backgrounds.”
Dr Waseem Kotoub, Country Director for British Council Qatar, added: “Through our partnership with Katara Cultural Village Foundation, we are creating meaningful opportunities for cultural exchange and artistic innovation that resonate with both our communities. This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to deepening the ties between Qatar and the UK.”
With entertaining options from art to music, there’s something for everyone at this cultural gala. ✤
Tired of the insane traffic on the roads? Get ready to ride the waves!
In a move to ease transportation in Qatar, the Ministry of Tourism (MOT) announced its plans to introduce a water taxi to the public. With the goal of decongesting road traffic by giving people the option to travel over water, it only makes sense considering the country's long coastline. Models of the water taxis were displayed at the Ministry’s booth at the inaugural Qatar Boat Show in November.
Headquartered at the 2,200sq/m Lusail Ferry Terminal, a state-of-the-art facility will be the hub of the ferry service. It will have ticketing, customer service offices and retail facilities. Comfortable waiting areas and advanced amenities for travellers will ensure passengers experience hassle-free transit. The Water Taxi project will work with the Sila public transit system. It aims to provide travellers with a seamless travel experience to various destinations. The project’s first phase includes the Pearl Ferry Stop and the Corniche Ferry Stop, and the team has completed the infrastructure work for it. The services will later extend to Katara, Old Doha Port, Hamad International Airport and Al Wakra. Long-term plans include a comprehensive network
connecting Old Doha Port to Al Khor, crossing Lusail City and the upcoming Simaisma area. The Lusail terminal will contain four 24m-long ferries and a pontoon equipped with electric chargers for ferry recharging. As of now, MOT is in the process of selecting the types of ferries and a project operator to run the service.
Travellers can expect the most advanced water taxis that make the journey easy and comfortable. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, they are designed with sustainability in mind to minimise environmental impact, in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030. What’s more, whether you’re a resident or a tourist, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views to make your journey more picturesque. Undoubtedly, water taxis will present the ideal mode of transportation to hop around the waterfront destinations in the country.
Are you ready for the final race of the F1 season that’s taking place in Abu Dhabi on December 8?
With the Drivers’ Championship already decided, after Max Verstappen came home in fifth place at Las Vegas to clinch his fourth title, it’s still all to drive for in the Constructors’ battle, with Bahrain owned McLaren in the lead with 608 points and Ferrari coming a close second with 584. The Red Bulls could still come up from third place but, as we went to press, just before the Qatar race, it was looking increasingly unlikely. So, we could still be in for a good old, Gulf-style celebration in Abu Dhabi.
Taking place over 58 laps at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, the big race kicks off at 4pm local time on Sunday, December 8, with qualifying on December 7 and three practice sessions running over December 6 and 7. It’s reasonable to expect another good performance from Max Verstappen, who holds the track’s race lap record at 1:26.103, set during the very contentious 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, during which the Dutchman pipped Lewis Hamilton to that year’s Championship title, which would have been a record-breaking eighth championship for the Brit.
However, Britain’s Lando Norris, who has been chasing Max in the latter part of the season, also has a good record at Yas, having taken the second fastest lap at 1:28.391 in the 2022 race. And this year’s cars are averaging around a second
faster, so it’s possible the track record could be broken. The Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend will also include the season finales of the Formula 2 and F1 Academy series, which both promise exciting on-track action. And, for fans of two-wheeled racing, Thursday December 5 will see the Etihad Arena hosting the adrenaline-fuelled season finale of the FIM World Supercross Championship. If that wasn’t enough, there’s some seriously impressive off-track entertainment in store with Teddy Swims and South Korean DJ Peggy Gou taking to the stage in the Yasalam After-Race Concert at Etihad Park on December 5, Maroon 5 on December 6, Eminem on December 7 and Muse on December 8.
Elsewhere the Yasalam Official After-Party – Afterlife is making its Abu Dhabi debut on December 6 at Yas Gateway Park, promising a unique show with Tale Of Us featuring Layla Benitez, Rebūke and Cassian, as well as special performances.
And you can expect a spectacular fireworks display to round out the race weekend.✤

FACT spent the day in MG’s all-new RX9 Premium, a luxurious full-sized SUV that proved as capable off-road as it is on the tarmac.
MG Motors is celebrating its 100th anniversary this December.
This popular British-born, Chinese-owned brand has developed an almost cult-like following among many sports car enthusiasts, experiencing a broader revival of interest in recent years.
With this in mind, we could not think of a better time to be invited by the team at MG Motor Qatar to test drive the marque’s latest offering, the RX9 Premium.
Renowned for its zippy sports cars, we were fascinated to uncover what this well-established brand could accomplish in the premium SUV segment.
Our first impression was that it exuded a powerful yet elegant presence. From head-on, the car’s 1,967mm width was apparent, emphasised by the vehicle’s prominent Starburst Wing Grille. We were highly impressed by how smoothly the sleek headlights have been integrated into the design, along with the 245 laserengraved LED light units, further enhancing the SUV’s eyecatching front profile.
Following the RX9’s sleek lines to the flanks, we appreciated the car’s contours, taking note of the stylish 21-inch, dual-tone alloy wheels that not only amplify the vehicle's visual appeal but also ensure stability and top performance both on and off the tarmac. Pop-out flush door handles add yet another touch of class to an already impressive exterior.
Once at the rear, we took in the sturdy-looking diffuser, the modish dual exhaust décor and the tastefully designed rear headlight display running the full width of the vehicle.
The RX9 is offered in six exterior colours, all of which are inspired by nature.
The all-new RX9 Premium is available in three trim levels that include the entry-level STD 2.0 Turbo and the mid-tier COM 2.0 Turbo. Fortunate enough to be experiencing the top-of-therange LUX 2.0 Turbo trim, we were greeted by a lavish interior.
On inspection of the thoughtfully designed cockpit, we noticed the high-quality wood grain trim of the dashboard, bestowing the vehicle with an air of elegance. We also admired the overall tasteful design of the layout, complete with perfectly positioned controls for maximum functionality.
We were pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of space on offer. The three-row, seven-seater layout provides ample leg, shoulder, knee and foot room for all occupants, with the third row boasting the largest seating space in its class.
Adding to the practical and roomy nature of the RX9 is the large luggage compartment, an area that can be expanded to 1,026 litres of storage space in the five-seat configuration. A power tailgate accentuates the car’s practical personality.
The designers at MG have ensured the interior of this highend vehicle is extremely comfortable, with the eight-way, electronically adjustable driver’s seat, with memory function,
providing a commanding view of the terrain ahead. The front passenger need not be too jealous, however, as they also get the royal treatment with a four-way electronically adjustable seat offering personalised comfort.
Hopping into the back seating, we discovered the 140° reclining second-row seats to offer flight-like comfort, with the third row providing up to 35° of reclining relief.
All seats in the LUX trim mode feature premium leather and are available in black or two-tone beige and brown.
After our thorough inspection of the luxurious interior, we concluded that the RX9’s cabin maintains a sophisticated yet practical design for both day-to-day use and longer journeys.
Having experienced a multitude of infotainment setups over the years, we always save our highest praise for those we find to be fast and user-friendly. With the RX9 Premium, MG has delivered on both counts.
Dual, high-quality 12.3-inch touch screens have been installed in the brand’s latest creation, ensuring entertainment was always at our fingertips. We were able to effortlessly navigate through the system’s information, locating whatever we needed within a few seconds. Adding to the convenient and high-end feel of the SUV were features including the hidden intelligent air-conditioning controls. MG has ensured that no matter how hot the weather conditions become outside, all those inside the vehicle remain as cool and comfortable as can be.
Amplifying our experience and providing the soundtrack to our day was the advanced 12-speaker premium Bose audio setup, with its cinema-quality sound. We listened to several of our favourite albums throughout the day, as we could not get enough of this superb stereo system. Further must-mentions include wireless phone charging and smartphone integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
As is always the case, our favourite part of the day was heading out onto the roads.
What must be said is the all-new MG RX9 Premium has been designed to deliver exceptional performance across all terrains. With five adaptive driving modes – Auto, Eco, Sport, Snow and Off-road, negotiating the busy city streets of Doha during rush hour, flying along the highway or taking a sharp turn off the tarmac onto the sands was a pleasure. We found this rugged, yet refined vehicle fully equipped to tackle any terrain we directed under it with relative ease.
Powered by a new Net Blue 2.0 Turbo super-efficient engine, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, we had all the power and control we needed at hand. At higher speeds we felt the vehicle to be stable and responsive, providing the desired acceleration, speed, handling and braking capacity to always feel in complete control of the driving experience.
MG has placed the safety of you and your loved ones at the forefront of the RX9’s design.
Fortunate enough to be experiencing the top-of-the-range LUX 2.0 Turbo trim, we were greeted by a lavish interior.” “
The vehicle’s robust structure incorporates over 81% high-strength steel, with ultra-high strength thermoformed steel used in key areas of the passenger compartment for enhanced protection. This premium SUV also meets the latest C-NCAP crash safety standards, ensuring the highest level of occupant safety.
Equipped with Bosch’s third generation Intelligent Front View Camera and fifth generation Millimetre Wave Radar, the RX9 offers advanced driver-assistance systems for all-around protection. With side and curtain airbags and advanced driver assistance systems that include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Lane Keeping, Intelligent High Beam Control, Adaptive Cruise Control and a Blind Spot Monitoring System, this SUV provides peace of mind whenever and wherever you choose to travel.
MG has shown itself to be more than a one-trick pony, delivering a classy, capable and well-equipped SUV, superbly designed to deliver both on and off the roads. ✤

With car manufacturers jumping onto the EV bandwagon, the Countryman distinguishes itself from the herd, both inside and out.

External attractions
The new all-electric MINI Countryman is bigger than its predecessors, being 13cm longer and 8cm taller. It stays true to MINI’s signature sporty style, displaying rounded headlights, minimalistic clean and sleek lines, short overhangs and a long wheelbase contrasted with large wheels. But the new SUV has amped up its looks with bolder alloy wheels and a sleeker and more aerodynamic body.
The minimalistic circular design flows into the interior as well. In a world-first design concept, the instrument cluster is a rounded 240mm diameter OLED screen. The MINI Operating System 9 enables all vehicle functions to be accessed via touch or voice command.
The battery-powered Countryman is flexible on the inside. A five-seater, it can be compressed into three- and two-seater configurations. Adding to its sustainability factor, the upholstery is made of recycled polyester and comes in a range of three colours – with tan adding a touch of class. A choice of three ambient modes levels up the driving experience. Core mode for a sophisticated vibe, Go-Kart mode for an adrenaline rush and Green Mode ensures an optimum drive to make the battery last longer. ✤

Never mind the guy on the shelf, this Elfster is much better behaved and is all about the gifting. Founded by software engineer Peter Imburg on discovering the difficulty his wife and sister were having trying to organise a Secret Santa for their family, it provides social networking features related to gift exchanges. Options include a universal wish-list, personalised gift recommendations, activity updates, an anonymous Q&A section (for when it’s all getting a bit crazy) and even forum discussions. Users can manage gift exchanges by creating a group, inviting friends and family, setting spending limits and swapping ideas. The curated gift guides by budget will ensure your presents always have presence. And, a bit like dogs, it’s not just for the festive season – though, it’s certainly very useful at this time of the year.
Elfster is available free of charge, as software as a service, via a website and via mobile apps for iOS and Android.
This one’s great for the kids as the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) gets into the spirit of the season with its Santa tracking app. Follow along as the big guy in red leaves the North Pole on his mission to deliver presents to children around the world.
In a community initiative from NORAD, that’s been running since 1955, the programme launches each year on December 1, but the actual Santa-tracking simulation starts at midnight annually on December 24. Apparently, the idea originated in December 1948 when the United States Air Force claimed an early warning radar had detected an unidentified sleigh and eight reindeer in the skies of the far north. And, ever since then, various arms of the US establishment have been involved in continuing the tradition. So, if your kids (or you) are looking for something fun to do in the lead up to the big day, this could be just the ticket.
JBL has launched its latest True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds boasting convenience and top acoustic performance.
At the heart of the second-generation JBL Tour Pro 3 is the newly redesigned Smart Charging Case. A major step up from traditional charging cases, this innovation not only keeps the earbuds powered but also acts as a wireless audio transmitter that enables ‘Everywhere Entertainment’ through which, by simply plugging the case into a USB or analogue source, users can get instantly connected to their earbuds (for example, for use with the inflight entertainment system on a plane).
This direct connection feature offers lower latency and more stable audio than traditional Bluetooth connections, making it perfect for gaming, calls, movies and music.
The case now also sports a 30% larger screen, providing seamless control over music playback, call management, media file information, caller ID and more without users needing to access their phone.
Additionally, the Smart Charging Case features Auracast functionality (designed to transmit audio content wirelessly), allowing users to easily share audio files with any Auracastenabled device.
The brand steps up its sound performance game with the JBL Spatial 360 and Head Tracking technology. These features transform users’ stereo sound into a fully immersive, 360° experience and also make sounds appear to stay fixed in space, no matter users’ head movements.
Using a new proprietary JBL Crystal AI call algorithm, the Tour Pro 3 also ensures clear and undistorted voice transmission during phone calls, thanks to its six microphones and a hydrodynamic windproof design. ✤

The Multi-Property General Manager of Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme, Agora Autograph Collection and the coming Palais Vendôme, Doha, a Luxury Collection Hotel, talks gratitude and a big ambition.
You began your hospitality career as a chef, what made you decide to transfer into hotel management and how did you go about making that move?
I spent many years behind the kitchen counters and those times were filled with what seems to me like millions of magnificent experiences and memories. The most important transformations in my journey have come through mentorships and love. I have been very fortunate to have had, and continue to have, mentors that brought forward opportunities I did not dream of. These mentors also generously set the path for me. When new opportunities present themselves, it is in my nature to capture them. Part of that comes from my hardworking parents, who did everything they could to create an extraordinary life through travel and great family meals. The decision to transfer to hotel management came through a journey of love and support. I am deeply grateful for all these wonderful people in my life.
You have worked across Europe, China and the Middle East. What do you find unique about Qatar?
I love the uniqueness of all the countries I have had the privilege to reside and work in. Qatar is a great nation because it values its citizens, culture and its nation. It is also very safe. I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of Qatar’s great development. Culture and safety are the bedrock of any successful nation. I am proud to play a very small role in that.
What are your future plans for Le Royal Méridien and what can you tell us about the coming Palais Vendôme, Doha, a Luxury Collection Hotel?
Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme is well on its way in a journey to be positioned as ‘The Very Best of The Very Best’ of Qatar’s five-star hotels. With the hotel’s beauty combined with the memorable stories created by our team of exquisite associates, we aim to bring the world to Lusail to ‘Savour the Good Life’. Palais Vendôme, A Luxury Collection Hotel will open in the future as a seven-star property. This matches exquisitely with Place Vendôme Qatar a true seven-star shopping and experience destination.
On a more personal note, of the many places you have been involved in hospitality, which is your favorite and why?
First of all, I love the friendliness of the people of Qatar. Every location and country I have lived and worked in has been a wonderful journey and each has a special place in my heart. Every day I savour the magnificence and beauty of the iconic Place Vendôme Qatar, Le Royal Méridien and Lusail. With Marriott International, I have had the privilege to lead three Ritz-Carlton hotels in three different countries, a St. Regis and now Le Royal Méridien. Each has become an inseparable part of who I am.
What three things would you tell visitors to Qatar they must see?
Qatar Museum of Islamic Art; the changing of the guards on camelback at the Amiri Diwan; and the street food cars in Lusail. ✤
Emmanouil Adam, Culinary Director at Doha Oasis, shares his experience of cooking for the Middle Eastern audience and the importance of fusing culture with innovation.
With your extensive international experience, what is your take on the dining sensibilities in Qatar, and how have you adapted your style to it?
Qatar’s dining culture is influenced by both its deep-rooted traditions and its cosmopolitan environment. Hospitality plays a central role here and mealtimes are often seen as an occasion for connection and celebration. There is a strong emphasis on generosity, shared meals and the importance of offering guests a variety of dishes. Traditional Qatari cuisine is rich in spices, rice, lamb and seafood; but there is a growing appreciation for contemporary interpretations of these flavours.
In adapting my style to this environment, I’ve focussed on respecting the local ingredients and traditional techniques while incorporating global trends that appeal to both locals and expatriates. It's been important to balance innovation with respect for tradition. For example, when presenting international dishes, I aim to incorporate local ingredients or adapt them to reflect regional tastes.
Attention to service, understanding local preferences and respecting cultural norms — such as the importance of hospitality and the social nature of meals — has been key to successfully adapting my approach. •
In a dynamic and fast-changing environment like the Middle East, how challenging is it to develop menus for a population with a diverse palate?
Developing menus can be both exciting and complex. The variety of tastes, dietary preferences and cultural influences creates a dynamic culinary landscape. You’re not just catering to local traditions but also to a global audience with diverse backgrounds, ranging from expatriates to tourists, each bringing their own expectations and food experiences.
The challenge lies in balancing innovation with respect for tradition. In the Middle East, people hold their local dishes and flavours close to their hearts. The key is to find that sweet spot where tradition meets contemporary culinary trends, while also accommodating dietary restrictions and preferences, such as halal, vegetarian or gluten-free options. What works in one country within the region may not resonate the same way in another, so it’s essential to tailor the menu to local tastes and expectations.
Ultimately, developing menus in such a diverse environment is all about flexibility and creativity, while ensuring that each dish respects both the heritage and the forward-looking aspirations of the Middle East’s diverse population.
What is your favourite comfort food that you make for yourself at home?
At home, one of the things that brings me the most comfort is recreating traditional Greek dishes that transport me back to my
country. In Greece, mealtimes were never rushed. Gatherings around the table weren’t just about food — they were a space to share stories and relax in each other's company. Now, when I cook at home, there’s a similar sense of timelessness. Cooking Greek dishes gives me more than just the satisfaction of a meal; it offers a bridge between who I was, who I am and who I am becoming. It’s a simple, yet profound way to honour my roots while embracing life abroad.
As an expert in combining international ingredients with traditional techniques, what is your signature dish and what makes it special?
As a chef, many dishes could be considered part of my signature style, each with its own unique story and identity. But if I had to choose one dish that truly represents my approach, it would be Grilled Mediterranean Octopus with Yuzu Ponzu Sauce and Cauliflower in Textures.
It perfectly captures the essence of what I love about food — melding the aromatic flavours of the Mediterranean with the bold, complex notes of Asian cuisine. The Mediterranean Octopus is tender and smoky, bringing a deep umami flavour. The Yuzu Ponzu sauce adds a citrusy, tangy punch, while bringing an Asian elegance. And the Cauliflower in Textures introduces a contrast with its roasted, pureed and crispy elements.
Together, these elements tell a story of culinary fusion — a harmonious blend of Mediterranean warmth and the sophisticated depth of Asian flavours. ✤
Chef Gastón Acurio, on a visit to La Mar Doha, told us about taking his Peruvian food culture to the world.
What inspired you to become a chef and what shaped your culinary philosophy?
I wanted to be a chef since I was five years old. I used to be in the kitchen with my grandmother, observing her cook for the family. While my friends wanted to play football, I wanted to cook. Instead of going to the park or the toy store, I desired to go to a restaurant. My culinary philosophy comes from my Peruvian heritage. I am part of a generation of Peruvian chefs who are wellversed in our traditional cuisine. But it is not widely recognised around the world. So, we planned to make people fall in love with our cuisine. And we started that mission 20 years ago. We never dreamed at that moment that we would be in the Middle East.
And that's what I've been doing for the last 20 years, representing my food culture, trying to bring the most authentic flavours.
In your opinion, what makes Peruvian cuisine unique compared to others?
Peruvian cuisine has evolved over the last 500 years. Communities from around the world brought their cultures with them and adapted their recipes with Peruvian ingredients. We were inspired by the pesto from Italy and we're eating fried rice as a regular Peruvian dish. It's completely different from other cuisines. So, it's unique because it's a process of hundreds of years.
At your restaurant, La Mar Doha by Gastón Acurio, how do you incorporate cultural elements and traditions into your menu?
We build our menu in three parts. In the first part, we create some of the most iconic Peruvian dishes. We create them exactly the way we do in Peru by bringing the ingredients from there. In the second part, we recreate our cuisine with local ingredients. In the third part, we let our chefs create their own dishes suited to the local Qatari tastes but with a Peruvian soul.
What role do you believe chefs and restaurants play in promoting sustainability in the food industry?
Chefs are important messengers of what's happening on the farms and in the ocean. We play a role in nourishment, education and cultivating our cultural heritage. We promote the exchange of food cultures, showing that food can foster peaceful coexistence among us. We may be working in fancy restaurants, but we’ve learned to be part of the whole chain of the community. It's about connecting with local production, sustainability and the environment. The future of cuisine is in good hands with the next generation. They are aware and concerned about sustainability. They know that cooking is not just about taste; it’s also about doing good.
What do you think about the fact that social media has helped many chefs become popular faster?
It’s great. When I started 20-30 years ago, it took longer. So, a good chef can be recognised faster nowadays through social media. Now, with information available to everyone, a young chef can open a fine-dining restaurant on a small budget. These young chefs are changing everything because of access to information and social media. It creates awareness not only for chefs but also for the young generation of diners.
When I was a student, my first lesson was roasted chicken. I wanted to find a new recipe for it. I had to wait to go to a library and find a book to find another recipe. Now, a 10-year-old kid interested in cooking can find countless recipes and videos for roast chicken on a phone. A young chef doesn't need millions of dollars to run a big restaurant. He can do it in a food truck, and people will go there. But along with it comes the stress that it could bring you with the fame that accompanies it. That's something to be handled because it could be very stressful if you're young.
What is this one dish at La Mar that everyone should try?
It would be the Cebiche. It is zingy and fresh, with the perfect acidity and a nice kick of chilli. ✤
AMS discovered a delightful sensory experience on a visit to Naama’s Garden by Twisted Olive
Naama’s Garden by Twisted Olive is the embodiment of a personal vision, a labour of love. The venue once stood on a barren stretch of land, nothing but dust and potential. Today, it has blossomed into a premier food destination.
As we entered, the transition from the bustling city to a serene garden was almost magical. Surrounded by lush greenery, the space felt like an escape, with every corner thoughtfully adorned with handpicked Balinese furniture, adding a personal touch. Large clay vases stood proudly alongside pathways of bright foliage, while the steps leading up the terrace blended harmoniously into the landscape. The gentle rustle of leaves and vibrant bursts of colour invited us to relax, making the venue a sensory haven that felt alive. The air was fragrant with a mix of garden blooms and rich, smoky aromas from the kitchen.
We were promptly seated by Zoe, the General Manager, who would be our guide for the evening. Our indulgence began with Korean fried wings, golden and glistening, each one coated in a sticky glaze of Sriracha and sesame seeds. The buttermilk ranch on the side provided a creamy contrast to the spice of the wings, cooling the palate while enhancing the deep-fried crunch. As I took the first bite, the skin crackled, giving way to juicy, tender meat, marinated to perfection. Each mouthful was a dance of heat, crunch and tang.
Presented like a work of art, the dynamite shrimp was perched atop a rainbow quinoa base, glistening under a spicy mayo and Sriracha drizzle. Each mouthful delivered a crispy shell, which revealed the succulent shrimp beneath. The quinoa added texture and depth, soaking up the slightly sweet, lightly fiery sauce, while the black sesame seeds sprinkled on top brought a delicate nutty flavour. Every element played its part in creating a dish that was both light and indulgent.
Head Chef Matthew, from South Africa, greeted us warmly and shared his excitement about the new additions to the menu. He proudly explained that pizzas had only recently been introduced, showcasing the restaurant’s diverse culinary influences. With a keen eye for detail, he ensured that each pizza was crafted with highquality ingredients and a perfect balance of flavours. His passion for innovation was clear and he was eager for us to try the new dishes.
Thankfully, we didn't have to wait long. The truffle short rib pizza that arrived next was a symphony of flavours, each bite a delicate balance between the earthy richness of truffle and the tender, succulent short rib. The honey chilli oil, drizzled with a light hand, provided just enough sweetness and heat to elevate the pizza to another level. The crust was thin and crisp, a perfect canvas for the toppings, while the cheese pulled in perfect strings as we sliced through.
The Wagyu beef pizza was equally impressive, with slices of melt-in-your-mouth beef laid generously over a bed of cheese. The beef, cooked to a perfect medium-rare, exuded a deep
umami flavour that mingled beautifully with the crisp, slightly charred dough. There was a subtle smokiness to the pizza, a hint that perhaps it had been finished off in a wood-fired oven, adding complexity to every bite.
Before our desserts arrived, Zoe took a moment to explain how Naama’s Garden was thoughtfully zoned to cater to different groups. Families were seated in areas with more space and a relaxed atmosphere, while couples could enjoy a more intimate setting away from the bustling main area. There were also sections for larger gatherings, ensuring that each guest, no matter their group size or occasion, could feel comfortable and experience a tailored dining experience. It was clear that every detail had been considered to make the restaurant feel both inclusive and personalised.
Soon, however, we were served up more delights. The Strawberry Tiramisu was a delicious twist on a classic dessert combining layers of mascarpone with a refreshing strawberry basil and lemon infusion. The delicate ladyfingers were dusted with berry powder, giving the dish a visually striking finish. The basil brought a subtle herbaceous note, balancing the richness of the mascarpone while still offering the familiar creamy texture
of traditional tiramisu.
Croissant Bread & Butter Pudding with ice cream was a comforting blend of flaky croissant pieces soaked in a rich custard, spiced with cinnamon and filled with dates and chocolate. Topped with vanilla bean ice cream and served with a velvety pouring custard, this dessert was a warm, indulgent finish to our meal. The dates added a caramel-like sweetness, while the ice cream provided a cool contrast to the warm pudding.
Naama's Garden by Twisted Olive was a sensory journey from start to finish, with every detail – from the décor to the food – reflecting the personal touch of its founder. It was not just a restaurant; it was a story, a transformation and a space that invited you to experience something truly unique. From the moment we stepped over its threshold, we were immersed in a setting that felt curated for both the eyes and the palate. Beyond the meal, it was a place that encouraged us to linger, to savour not only the food but the atmosphere that effortlessly blended luxury with warmth. ✤
Ihave to say, I love the concept of this place. It’s not just a rooftop restaurant where you walk out of the elevator and all is laid before you. Instead, they’ve actually constructed a proper little Italian-style trattoria, complete with sunburnt yellow walls, turquoise shutters, cute ironwork signage and an abundance of greenery, right there on the deck overlooking the blue waters of the pool.
The brainchild of Mario Haddad, Jr. the name is a dedication to his father, Mario, Sr. The walls of this Doha restaurant are adorned with family photographs and press clippings telling the story of how the younger Haddad launched his burgeoning culinary empire in Beirut, Lebanon, after a childhood spent adoring (and later emulating) the aromas of his father’s Italian cooking.
As a young man, he entered the family’s film distribution business but soon felt the need for more creativity and his first eatery, a sushi diner, was born. He’d always wanted to open a restaurant with his father and, within a few years, that dream became a reality. Now, Mario e Mario has claimed its place on the Doha dining scene bringing a relaxed, family feel with its white, garden-style seating, tile-topped tables featuring lemon patterns reminiscent, for me, of lunches eaten on Italy’s famed Amalfi coast, and a bright, clean open kitchen.
The staff are friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu – but I must say, I was a bit disappointed to have missed Mario Jr. himself, who visited just a couple of days before my trip. I’ll be sure to catch you next time, Mr. Haddad.
We were quickly served with homemade focaccia, lightly seasoned and dotted with juicy black olives. Perfect for mopping up a liberal drizzle of excellent olive oil and balsamic.
I must admit that, in any Italian eatery, if bruschetta is on the menu, that’s my definite ‘go to’, I can’t resist the combination of sweet tomatoes coupled with the sweet/savoury tang of basil, a hearty sprinkling of salt and a good coating of top-class olive oil. But, while the bruschetta was, indeed, tasty, I think it may have some competition for a new favourite. At our server’s insistence, we also ordered a bowl of Zucchine Fritte and were very glad we did. How could something so simple bring such joy?
The zucchini batons are soaked in milk, to release the slight bitterness, before being doused in semolina flour and fried to a delicate, crisp perfection. All they needed was a light sprinkling of salt to add contrast to the sweetness of the flesh and I could quite happily have eaten the whole bowl!
For my Primi course – yes, the Italians eat a second course, usually pasta, between the appetiser and the main – I chose Linguine Gamberi e Bisque, it’s wonderful aroma exciting my taste buds before it ever arrived at our table.
The bisque, a made-with-love process of preparing a fish or seafood sauce or soup with the heads and tails of the shellfish gently cooked alongside onions, garlic, herbs and plenty of olive oil, is the defining characteristic of this dish. With the addition of sweet tomatoes, it coated the chunky, al dente pasta without being overpowering allowing the sweetness of the juicy prawns
to shine through. The very slight spice of a basil sprinkling brought the divergent flavours together, the whole forming an homage to the delight of fresh, simple ingredients.
My dining companion chose Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare and the enjoyment at our table was easily evidenced by the silence as we tucked in.
For my main course, I chose Petto di Pollo Ripieno con Formaggio di Capra – chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes served with sauteed peppers and baked tomatoes. In truth, the generous size of the serving was a little daunting after the pasta, maybe next time I won’t try to eat like an Italian and will forego the Primi. But the dish was truly beautiful in its presentation, the lightly salty cheese oozing from the gently browned breast atop its bed of colourful seared peppers. And, once I cut into the tender, succulent meat, all thoughts of being already replete disappeared and I was determined to show my appreciation for the chef’s craft.
After that feast, I took some time to explore the small outside deck where those same lemon-decked tables and white chairs with their cheerful yellow and white striped cushions offer an interesting view over the surrounding area.
Then, it was time for dessert. I was keen to try the classic Tiramisu and homemade Panna Cotta topped with fresh berry sauce that a friend – who has spent many years in Italy – had told me are amazing and not to be missed. But, I must confess, that, on this occasion, the much vaunted dessert stomach (you know, where there’s always space for a spoonful or two of something sweet?) totally deserted me. Alas, I could only look with longing.
With its authentic décor, friendly staff who bring a distinct family atmosphere and versatile menu, in which classic favourites sit alongside lesser-known Italian dishes, Mario e Mario offers the ideal spot for a casual lunch or romantic evening among the rooftop’s twinkling lights. And, as for me, well, I’ll definitely be back for that Panna Cotta. Mr. Haddad, you have stolen a little piece of my heart! ✤
Crossing the threshold of Electric Diner was like stepping back in time. The crimson leather booths, offset by dark wood panelling and marble accents, glowed under the warm amber light of brass sconces. A neon-red ‘Electric Diner’ sign set the tone, its retro charm harmonising with the clink of cutlery and the hum of conversation. The tiled floors, dotted with monochrome patterns, added a sense of understated elegance, while large mirrors reflected the vibrant atmosphere. Hafid, our waiter for the evening, welcomed us at the entrance with effortless professionalism, making us feel like his most important guests. He thoughtfully seated us beside the window so we could enjoy the view and swiftly offered us water, juices, milkshakes or a range of soft drinks.
After settling into our seats, taking in our surroundings and scanning the menu, we opted for the Padron peppers with a spicy dip. Their blistered skins offered a smoky bitterness, balanced by the heat of the sauce, which lingered pleasantly on the palate. It was a promising start, teasing us with bold flavours, and, most importantly, not too filling.
For our main course, we couldn’t resist Electric Diner’s famed
double cheeseburger, a dish that has rightly earned its stellar reputation. The patties, a bespoke blend of premium meat, were perfectly seared to create a caramelised crust, locking in a juicy, flavour-packed interior. Each bite revealed layers of creamy, melted cheddar, tangy pickles and a subtly toasted bun that soaked up the burger’s rich juices without losing its structure. The fries, crisp on the outside and fluffy within, provided the perfect crunchy contrast, generously salted for a satisfying finish.
We also indulged in a trio of wings, exploring the full range of bold flavours on offer. The buffalo wings were a classic done right, coated in a tangy, spicy sauce that delivered just the right amount of heat, offset by the cool crunch of pickled celery and carrots. The BBQ wings offered a smokier, sweeter profile, complemented by crispy onions and a hint of sharpness from pickled chillies. Finally, the garlic parmesan wings were decadently rich, their creamy aioli glaze punctuated by golden flecks of fried garlic that added a satisfying crunch. It was a messy, hands-on feast that had us reaching for extra napkins but left us utterly delighted.
As we savoured our mains, the floor-to-ceiling windows provided a stunning view of Doha's Corniche and cityscape. Diners outside on the veranda enjoyed the same picturesque scene, their laughter mingling with the soft melodies of a live singer and pianist performing on the bandstand in the hotel’s centre. The music drifted into the diner, creating an atmosphere that was equal parts vibrant and intimate.
When it came time for dessert, Electric Diner truly showcased its creativity. The strawberry mango hotdog was a delightful surprise – a pillowy brioche bun filled with luscious mango curd and sweet strawberries, topped with whipped cream. The playful churros fries on the side added a delightful crunch and a hint of cinnamon warmth.
The pecan cheesecake was equally impressive. Its velvety filling was whipped to perfection, light yet decadent, with a rich salted caramel glaze draped over the toasted pecans. It was an elegant take on a classic dessert, leaving us utterly satisfied. Nevertheless, we simply couldn’t pass up the chance to try their Oreo milkshake – a showstopper in its own right. Rich, creamy vanilla ice cream was blended with just the right amount of salted caramel, topped with a mountain of whipped cream and generously dusted with crunchy Oreo crumbs. Each sip was a satisfying blend of sweet and salty, with the crunch of the Oreo adding a delightful textural surprise.
Electric Diner strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation. From the retro décor to the artful reimagining of classic dishes, every detail has been thoughtfully crafted. With stunning views, live music drifting through the air and an array of indulgent delights, it’s a place you’ll return to over and over again. ✤
Tonight, I make my way into Msheireb under a waning crescent moon, where the beam of light reflected by this moon, or ‘Liang’ in Chinese, rests over the Plaza. Appropriate then, that we are setting our sights on Liang at Mandarin Oriental, Doha, where Chef Thomas Fong is waiting for us with the best of his menu.
Our wonderful server is an absolute fountain of knowledge for every item and ingredient lucky enough to find its way onto Liang’s menu. The gentle hum of voices and unobtrusive music are the backdrop to the convivial atmosphere. This elegant restaurant feels both intimate and homely.
Our dinks arrive, and we are treated to Asian twists on some of the classics, where ingredients such as pandan (the fragrant leaf),
aloe vera, coconut, matcha and lemongrass are firm features. Our server insists we try as many dishes as humanly possible, so we buckle up (or perhaps that should be unbuckle?!) as dish after dish appears. First up are the soups – we try Hot and Sour and Sweetcorn Soup with Scallops and Shrimps. The former contains white and black pepper for the hot and black vinegar for the sour – the heat rises and falls with each mouthful and the silklike ribbons of tofu, egg whites, chicken and shitake mushrooms make it a broth that packs a hearty punch. For the less spicily inclined, the sweetcorn soup is mild and reminiscent of warming meals by a fire, with the added decadence of scallops and shrimps melded in.
We move onto dim sum, via a whistle-stop tour of Liang StirFried Wagyu Beef Rib-Eye (A5-grade Australian Wagyu with flavoursome garlic chips on every bite) and Baked Creamy King Crab and Scallop (Alaskan king crab and Japanese scallops with a melt-in-your-mouth cheesy bechamel and crispy topping). We try both fried and steamed dim sum, and neither disappoints. We love the Taro Puffs (gently purple, taro root vegetable, combined with water chestnuts, carrots and soy, and encased in a crispy, wispy coating of cornstarch and water) and Baked Wagyu Puffs.
The Wagyu puffs are an especial delight, with their layers upon layers of spinach puff pastry sheets, encrusted at either end with black sesame seeds, holding nuggets of wagyu beef, onion, spring onion and oyster sauce. The craftsmanship that has gone into creating them is fine and delicate and the flavours are perfectly balanced.
Steamed dim sum is up next and, oh my. If you are a dumpling fan, then this is the place for you. We try Har Gau – light and al dente crystal shrimp and bamboo dumplings, served with Liang’s signature XO sauce (dried scallops, shrimps, mushrooms, garlic and chilli, mixed with a delicate chilli oil, for a warming, extra bite), and then we try Liang Xiao Long Bao, a signature dish. For the uninitiated, there is a technique to consumption – use your chopsticks to ease the dumpling onto your spoon (not too near the bottom of the dumpling or the soup within will soon be without!), pop a little sauce of your choice (we choose XO), make a small hole in the dumpling to let the soup run out and then enjoy. The chicken and umami are a winning combination, and we think that dumplings cannot get any better than this.
Arguably no Chinese meal is complete without Peking Duck – a mainstay of this wonderful cuisine. We opt for the Half Duck, and it is well worth the 60 minutes required for Chef Thomas and his team to produce this tender, mildly pink, glorious bird. The duck is imported from Bangkok, carved at the table with an impressive Chinese knife, and comes with 10 pancakes, home-made hoisin sauce, cucumber and leek. The leek is a wonderful amendment to the traditional spring onion, as the bite of the flavour is there, but none of that lasting oniony taste, and the hoisin sauce has secret elements of sweet potato, soy beans and chilli pepper to lift the traditional sweetness. And it is a two-course extravaganza. Once we’ve eaten our fill of pancakes, the duck extras are stripped, diced and cooked with mushrooms, pine nuts, carrots celery and green onion, and then served with ‘lettuce leaf wraps’. Not only delicious, but a way of making absolutely certain that no part of this delectable duck goes to waste.
We are further treated to Kung Pao Tiger Prawns, where the sweet chilli sauce contains osmanthus syrup (a flower native to China that gently floral flavours with notes of apricot, orange and peach). These prawns are to die for – they are succulent, al dente and really rather marvellous. Our mains are rounded off with Sichuan Wok-Fried Spicy Chicken, Sizzling Mushrooms, Stir-Fried Shanghai Pak Choy and Liang Fried Rice. All house wonderful ingredients such as flavoursome chicken thigh (Sichuan Chicken), apricot chilli (Sizzling Mushrooms), smooth ginger (Pak Choy), and scallops and freshly steamed asparagus (Fried Rice), and all showcase the immense thought and skill that has gone into such a beautifully curated menu.
We have the smallest corner into which we squeeze dessert –Chilled Mango Sago and Liang Coconut Tropical Paradise. Both refreshing and delicious. The pomelo and tapioca pearls are the balancing ends of the sweet mango ice cream in the Mango Sago, and we have truly entered a tropical paradise with Liang Coconut Tropical Paradise. Its taro adds an intenseness to the pandan ice cream and the coconut combines with the black tapioca pearls, transporting us to the jungle and the beach simultaneously. Sipping an Osmanthus tea to aid our digestion, we feel like we may have peaked. Chinese food culture is steeped in rituals and traditions, where eating is not just about nourishment of the body, but also of the soul. Attention to intricate details ensures ingredients, aesthetics and taste come together in a profusion of colour and explosions of flavour. Liang at Mandarin Oriental, Doha not only lives these values, they are the drumbeat that pulses through its core. ✤
Arriving at Silk Road, you’re immediately aware of the spaciousness of the open dining area. Goldrimmed, stone-clad wall arches call to mind Qatar’s traditional architecture while verdant greenery and a gentle blue and white colour scheme give a welcoming yet sophisticated feel to the space.
A partially open kitchen gives a great view of the chefs weaving their magic and they have their work cut out for them, the menu offers an impressive range of dishes from across the region and further afield.
While waiting for my dining companion, I chose a selection of appetisers – baba ghanoush, hummus, Fattoush, sambousek and lamb kibbeh. The eggplant dip is usually my favourite but, on this occasion, I was thoroughly impressed with the Fattoush with its thin ribbons of crispy fried bread and a great contrast of olive oil and pomegranate molasses drawing out the piquancy of the onions and crunchy vegetables. The presentation was also delightful, the fresh, bright colours presenting a real invitation to enjoy.
The smooth, creamy hummus drizzled with olive oil and a glowing dusting of paprika was superbly satisfying and the perfect foil to warm, fluffy bread. It also proved a hit with my friend, who arrived just in time to join me in the hot mezzes and pronounced them every bit as good as the ones she savours at home in Lebanon. For me, the star was the crunchy kibbeh, the crisp shell gorgeously yielding to reveal the enticingly seasoned
meat within – perfect when dipped in the hummus, though I’m not sure that’s how it’s intended.
As we took a short break to digest, I was served a signature drink, Apricot Sunrise. A delicious concoction of apricot syrup, orange and lemon juice, grenadine and soda water, which not only looked beautiful but proved both sweet and refreshing with the light bite from the lemon cutting through the sweetness of the syrups.
Of course, we had to try the Batata Hara, spicy potatoes, which is always one of my ‘go to’ dishes and a great indication of the quality of the kitchen. Golden fried and mildly spiced, their heat was tempered with hints of coriander to provide a comforting bite without being overpowering. They were accompanied by my absolute favourite dish of the day, Shrimp Moutaffa. Plump, juicy seafood embraced in a fragrant garlic and lemon sauce with highquality olive oil and surrounded by creamy mashed potatoes. They were so, so good, each mouthful a little burst of sensory heaven. The mixed grill that came next was enormous, certainly generous enough for two to share, consisting of shish tawook, shish kebab, kofta and lamb chop. A veritable carnivore's dream, the grilled kebabs were juicy and charred, each bite infused with aromatic spices that lingered on the palate. My favourite was the chicken – succulent and tender with not a hint of dryness and a light piquancy from the flavourful marinade. The grill was served with Biwaz salad – parsley and onion with sumac and lemon – to add a tangy brightness alongside a pungent garlic dip.
Though more than replete, if there is kunefeh on the dessert menu, I can never say no and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. Crispy vermicelli and melting creamy cheese with an earthy nutty topping and sweet, sticky syrup, it performed a little dance on my tongue and left me smiling widely.
And since the dessert stomach had been engaged, we also tried the Umm Ali, the much-loved Arabic-style bread pudding. Pretty much a hug in a bowl, the warm, milky mix, glistening with nuts and raisins, boasted subtle hints of cardamom – the ultimate in comfort food.
Throughout our lunch, the observant restaurant team were never far away, happy to give information on the dishes and make suggestions. They made sure we were well served and happy without being obtrusive, which is always a blessing.
The kitchen delivered an impressive array of dishes, showcasing both creativity and quality across each option we tried and the convenience of the city centre location made Silk Road a great option for a lazy weekday lunch with friends – good conversation mixed with great food is always a winner.
As an added bonus, you can even pick up a cake for a special occasion and a coffee to go in the lobby on the way out. I’m told they’re rather fabulous, so a return trip is in order. ✤
GO:
The first thing to know about Mondrian Doha is that it’s definitely not your average hotel, more the imaginative playground of designer Marcel Wanders, a lifestyle property where his vision comes to life in abundant spaces and cosy nooks, all with a storybook feel.
Even the exterior, by SWA architects, tells a story. The entrance resembles the beak of a falcon with the sides of the building forming sweeping wings, ready to take flight. And the sense of playfulness is immediately evident as soon as you step through the door where a large golden bell, complete with dazzling crystal chandelier in place of the clapper, hangs overhead signalling that school’s out and now it’s time for fun!
Blinding white pillars are adorned with golden eggs and a black and white floor bedecked with floral and piano key patterns leads the way to the all-day-dining restaurant, Mondrian Bistro.
On the way you’ll encounter the hotel’s famous fantastical staircase. Gleaming black against the sparkling white surroundings, and adorned with arabesque patterns, it soars four floors above the lobby and goes… nowhere. Or does it? It was described to me as ‘the staircase to your dreams’. You climb it and take from it whatever you will. I can certainly say, it’s a wonderful spot to observe the goings on below and, perhaps, take a moment to reflect a little. After a seamless check in, I was shown to my suite on the 12th floor and what a space it was. More lustrous white with a huge living room area complete with dining table and two comfortable, chunky sofas. More whimsy came in the shape of golden statues resembling a dog and an elephant – two of my favourite creatures, they made me feel totally at home.
Situated around a corner was a white desk in a private area where one could work away from distractions and numerous other spaces, such as a walk-in closet with tea- and coffeemaking facilities, boasted sliding doors and quirkily placed mirrors adding a sense of surprise at every turn.
The living room console proved to be my undoing with jars of nuts and sweeties – I tried hard to ignore them but the temptation of the jellybeans was just too much. So, I grabbed a handful and headed to the bedroom to explore further. The king-size bed was extremely comfortable with its bank of fluffy pillows, but it was the wall opposite that really caught my eye and my imagination. Decked out in wallpaper portraying scenes that could easily have come from the 1001 Nights, classical Arabic characters coupled with storybook illustrations. Throughout my stay, I never tired of looking at it, each glance revealing a new element. Soon, it was time to head to ESPA because, what’s a city break without a little pampering? Another extraordinary space, I was soon engulfed in shimmering mosaiced walls while other areas featured bright floral-patterned tiled floors and walls – a sense of wonderment filled me, the designs literally calling out an invitation to relax and surrender my senses to the exquisite surroundings.
After a refreshing welcome drink and an in-depth consultation, my therapist, Yousra, explained that all products used are from the premium ESPA brand and my tired face was about to get some serious (much-needed) attention.
After a thorough but gentle cleansing, Yousra examined my skin under white light and said she would apply non-comedogenic products, containing collagen and hyaluronic acid, that would not block my pores, combined with kobido, a Japanese facial massage technique aimed at encouraging facial regeneration with lifting and lymphatic drainage to flush and detox.
She chose a gentle facial scrub with pumpkin and jojoba enzymes followed by rich replenishing oil before applying a brightening surface mask. It was cool going on and I had not realised how parched my skin was until I felt the moisture seeping into my pores. A probiome eye cleaner came next with a hydrating floral spa fresh toner to finish before my lips were brushed with pink pomelo balm. I can honestly say the whole experience left me looking and feeling like a new woman, ready for my evening’s date at the wonderful Morimoto.
The first restaurant in the Middle East from the legendary Japanese Master Chef Masaharu Morimoto feels right at home in the fantastical setting of Mondrian Doha. You enter through a golden hued, mirrored corridor and the first sight is of a buzzing open kitchen fronted by a sushi bar. The numerous chefs required to produce the exceptionally high-quality menu is evident from the kitchen activity and, though the restaurant’s décor is very much classic
Morimoto, the addition of a stunning, large chandelier constructed of glittering Arabic-style lanterns gives a sense of place and a nod to local heritage.
There are special nights throughout the week, such as Sushi & Steak Sundays and Rolls & Ramen Tuesdays, but we chose to go for a tasting selection from the à la carte menu, suggested by Restaurant Manager Paulo Bastos, which proved to be an excellent decision.
We started with the salmon poke tacos – crunchy mini taco shells bursting with flavour from the perfectly seasoned fish which was offset beautifully by the cool creaminess of avocado. Next up was Wagyu Carpaccio; melting, buttery, well-marbled meat topped with citrussy yuzu zest that literally danced across the taste buds with its echoes of cilantro, daikon and chives.
A selection of sushi followed with the standout being aburi salmon with truffle, oh be still my beating heart as I remember that superbly satisfying flavour as the deep richness of the fungi combined with the salty tartness of the fish. The sushi was accompanied by an equally impressive lobster tempura with yuzu koshu dip. Spicy and flavourful, it was utterly delicious.
We finished our savouries with thinly sliced A5 Waygu cooked on a hot stone at our table. The meat was so tender it hardly required chewing, the juices flowing abundantly, a testament to the generous marbling.
After such a feast, I must confess I was ready to sleep and I nodded off immediately as soon as I reached my uber comfortable bed.
Morning brought the breakfast experience at Mondrian Bistro, where I was faced with charming attentive staff and possibly the largest breakfast spread I have come across in my wanderings so far. All beautifully laid out, there was everything a girl could want, from fresh bread and pastries to fruits and vegetables. Cold cuts sat alongside honeycomb and cheeses, sausages and bacon with hash browns and sautéed mushrooms. I was honestly spoilt for choice and decided to go for the Halloumi Avocado Toast from the special breakfast menu. Served on sourdough with smashed avocado, grilled halloumi and microgreens topped with a perfectly poached egg, it was a little taste of happiness to start the day.
Afterwards, I was lucky enough to take a hotel tour visiting the gorgeous Deluxe Loft Suite – even grander than my own, if that’s possible – and the famed pool. The Mondrian pool is really something else, a space that completely reflects the design elements throughout the property.
Black and white floors in checkered and piano key patterns sit beneath a stained-glass dome complete with crystal chandeliers that glitter on the blue waters below. It’s an area in which the hotel organises events and I could just imagine designer-clad guests in this fairytale setting.
We also visited Smoke & Mirrors – a secret, hidden entertainment spot, like an old fashioned speakeasy. The
challenge, should you accept it, is simply to find it.
My second evening was spent at Hudson Tavern, where myself and my dining companion were given an early taste of the festive menu. We began with a delicious pumpkin salad, to which we returned throughout the meal. Roast turkey with all the trimmings followed, accompanied by peas with bacon bits, crunchy broccoli, creamy mashed potatoes and a deliciously flavoursome gravy.
I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of traditional festive fare, but the turkey was moist and moreish and the veggies were spot on. And, even better, the whole thing can be ordered to go, so you can be the host or hostess with the moistest at your holiday table without the long hours in the kitchen – you should also check out the brisket, I’m told it’s amazing and the whole meal is great value.
The final stop of my visit was for afternoon tea in the enchanted forest of EllaMia. An expansive seating area neighbouring the lobby, the space is dotted with sculptural white trees and other whimsical elements.
The storytelling continues even in the food with sandwiches on brightly coloured breads – red, white and green – and picture-perfect cakes presented on delicate, floral bone china. My favourite was the blueberry pie in shortcrust pastry on a bed of crème patisserie topped with flecks of gold foil.
The whole thing was almost too pretty to eat, but only almost, it was actually too delicious not to.
And so, with tummy full and tales of wonderment to tell, I headed home with a vow to return, as I suspect I have only scratched the surface of Mondrian Doha’s stories. ✤

MONDRIANHOTELS.COM/DOHA FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A BOOKING.
From sunwashed, pastel buildings to authentic local flavours, Liz O’Reily discovered a taste of old Qatar during a stay at Mina Hotel and Residences By The Torch.
Situated on a promontory in the heart of the Old Port, this property introduces a really unique concept. The boutique hotel itself boasts just 30 rooms, while the surrounding streets accommodate 119 stylish apartments, each situated above heritage-style shops, such as antiques or arts outlets, or funky restaurants.
Painted in a rainbow of pastel shades, the whole area is abundant with street art murals and, of course, everywhere you look there are amazing sea views. The hotel even abuts a boardwalk where boats – including a couple that resemble vintage Porsche car models – are tied up just waiting for passengers to board.
On arrival, I was impressed by the unfussy but welcoming reception desk where shades of creamy marble are offset by a dark wooden wall with gold accents. Pebble-shaped seating sat below an array of lamps and the neighbouring lounge area with its comfortable cream seating, traditional floor rugs and model dhows beckoned.
However, with a lunch reservation waiting, I headed straight up to my room to freshen up. And my first impression was a definite ‘wow’ as, through arched glass doors adorned with traditional heavy ironmongery, I was faced with a fabulous view out over the water where wooden dhows bobbed at anchor in front of a visiting naval ship.
The bedroom itself was spacious with plenty of room for a small comfortable sofa and chairs in a conversation seating area just inside the expansive double doors. A firm but comfortable bed with super soft pillows guaranteed a good night’s sleep and it was faced by a wide-screen TV to wake up with. A well-placed desk with plenty of power points made working easy – though with these views all around, you probably won’t want to. I speak from experience here ladies and gentlemen.
Ample wardrobe space meant my clothes didn’t get crushed and crumpled and there was a kettle plus a Nespresso coffee machine as well as a small fridge holding complimentary soft drinks.
The bathroom boasted a wet-room style walk-in shower and I was particularly impressed by the pretty, colourful floor tiles and the brass-effect fittings – very much in keeping with the heritage feel of the place.
Amenities from the Parisian Bienvenue brand mean you don’t have to bring your own and these are accompanied by a thoughtful range of accessories for guests to use, from a comb to a toothbrush and even a loofah. So, no worries if you forget to pack something, it’s all available on hand. There are also fluffy robes and slippers to complete the feeling of indulgence.
Tearing myself away from that magnificent view, I headed down to the all-day dining restaurant to check out the business lunch. On the way, I noticed the thoughtful maritime touches such as the rope rails at each incline, emphasising both location and seafaring history, and the artworks depicting Qatari icons such as the oryx, Qatar’s national symbol, the falcon and old painted doors.
Once seated on the charming outdoor terrace, which sits right next to the boardwalk, I was treated to a yummy Greek salad with chunks of salty feta perfectly offset by crispy vegetables. And lots of black olives, for which I have discovered a recent weakness. Dining overlooking the water was blissful and I took my time as the welcoming staff checked regularly to make sure I had all I needed. I then enjoyed the steak sandwich, which was one of the best I’ve had in a while. The crunchy bread was absolutely brimming with well-seasoned steak in bite-sized chunks with a very, very light BBQ sauce – I’m not usually a fan of this sauce, probably because many places slather it on, so to enjoy the gentle piquancy without it overpowering the rich flavour of the meat was quite a treat. The sandwich came with a side of amazingly crispy wedges. Piping hot with their outsides crispy and inners of deliciously fluffy potato all topped off with a light dusting of seasoning containing paprika, salt and something special I couldn’t quite put my finger on. They were delicious.
The hotel also does a rather wonderful afternoon tea that’s pretty as a picture and includes all the classics from finger sandwiches to indulgent cakes and pastries. With the current balmy weather, I’d suggest you try it on that gorgeous terrace, it’s the perfect way to while away a couple of hours with great food in picture perfect surroundings. When visiting Mina Hotel, you simply must take a walk around the area. In the daytime and evening, it is buzzy with people going about their work and others taking in
the sights. I chose to explore in the early morning, when all is quiet. The buildings with their gentle pastel colours are so very pretty and keep an eye out for eye-catching murals, from birds to fantastic creatures. The artworks really do bring the area to life and illustrate Qatar’s creative credentials.
And, as you leave the hotel, don’t forget to cross the road and take a picture on the Friends sign on the other side, it’s been designed so a group of buddies can sit in between the letters for that perfect pic for the Gram.
I also spotted some building work where a rooftop pool for hotel guests is expected to open within the coming months. This will be fantastic spot from which to take in the surrounding sights and sounds.
On my last day, an early wakeup revealed the beauty of the same scene rising from a slight mist which made it all the more beautiful, muting the minimal traffic noise and giving the sense of an enchanted space just for me.
I headed back to the restaurant for breakfast, to be greeted by the staff inquiring why I had not made it the day before and checking, once again, that all was well. The breakfast is, unusually, served at the table, rather than the usual buffet – which somehow adds to the feeling of indulgence.
I chose Shakshuka served in the traditional way, with scrambled eggs and a rich tomatoey sauce, accompanied by a small salad and fluffy fresh bread. It was utterly delicious washed down with fresh orange juice and I felt myself being thoroughly spoilt.
Too soon, it was time to return to the reality of work and meetings but I thoroughly enjoyed my mini-Mina break and I look forward to returning soon… those pastel buildings have won a little piece of my heart. ✤
Explore some of the world's best festive markets, from London to Germany, where Noel traditions, seasonal treats and holiday cheer come to life.
As the festive season unfolds, there’s nothing quite like the charm of a traditional seasonal market to ignite the holiday spirit. Strolling through these twinkling, snow-dusted havens, you’re transported into a world of handmade crafts, indulgent treats and heartwarming traditions. From the bustling streets of New York to the historic alleys of Prague, here’s a guide to some of the most enchanting festive markets to visit this season.
Renowned worldwide, Germany’s holiday market tradition began in the late Middle Ages. Bathed in history and charm, each town and city has its own unique take on festive celebrations.
The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, one of Germany’s oldest and most famous markets, is a bucket-list destination. Located in the city’s Hauptmarkt Square, it features traditional wooden stalls with red-andwhite striped awnings, handcrafted gifts, decorations and sweets. Visitors can sample authentic Nuremberg lebkuchen (gingerbread), Spekulatius almond cookies and mulled grape. Don’t forget to pick up a handmade Rauschgoldengel (gold-foil angel) as a keepsake. It runs until December 24 and opens daily from 10am to 9pm, closing at 8pm on the final day.
Frankfurt festive market is another popular favourite, celebrated for its festive decorations and live musical performances. Set against the backdrop of Römerberg and St. Paul's Square, it offers a variety of handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys and seasonal treats like Bethmännchen marzipan cookies. A towering Yuletide tree and performances by local choirs and orchestras add to the magical holiday atmosphere. The market runs until December 22, from 10am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 10pm on weekends.
For a more intimate experience, visit the Reiterlesmarkt set in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in northern Bavaria. Take a stroll through the winding cobblestoned streets of this mediaeval town, which transforms into a fairytale illuminated with festive lights. Enjoy traditional performances, storytelling and candle-lit walking tours. This market has been celebrated for over 500 years, making it a timeless favourite. It runs until December 23, from 11am to 7pm daily.
Prague’s festive markets are among the most picturesque in Europe, where Gothic architecture meets the sparkle of holiday lights. The market at Old Town Square transports you into a fairytale setting with the Church of Our Lady before Týn as its backdrop. At its centre stands a huge decorated tree, adorned with thousands of lights, attracting crowds for a festive atmosphere of carols, music and dance. The stalls here are a treasure trove of Bohemian glass, ceramics, lace embroidery, wooden toys and hand-painted ornaments.
Foodies can also savour traditional Czech treats, such as rybí polévka (festive fish soup), trdelník (sweet chimney cakes) and perníčky (spicy gingerbread). Wash these down with a cup of delicious horká čokoláda (hot chocolate) or svařák, the local mulled grape.
Another must-visit is the Wenceslas Square market, a short walk from Old Town Square. While smaller, it offers a cosier atmosphere and a wide array of locally crafted goods. The market’s proximity to luxury boutiques makes it a convenient stop for those looking to mix traditional holiday shopping with high-end finds.
For a quieter yet equally magical experience, head to the Castle Hill near Prague Castle. This market not only offers stunning views over the city but also provides a peaceful retreat from the main tourist spots, with a selection of unique festive items and artisan crafts. The markets run until January 6, 2025.
London comes alive during the holiday season, with markets scattered across the city. The Southbank Centre Winter Market is a must-visit, offering a stunning riverside setting by the Thames. Wooden chalets brim with handmade gifts, festive food and steaming mulled beverages. The aroma of roasted chestnuts fills the air, as you stroll past vendors selling cosy woollen scarves and quirky holiday ornaments. It runs until December 26. Another sprawling spectacle that draws visitors from near and far is Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Beyond the market, enjoy a festive extravaganza with live performances, a giant Ferris wheel and the UK's largest outdoor ice-skating rink. From Bavarian Fun House and Magical Ice Kingdom to Santaland Express Train, there’s something for everyone – it’s the perfect spot to have some fun and soak in the holiday cheer. It runs until January 5. If you’re seeking something off the beaten path, the Greenwich festive market offers a charming, historic ambience. With its cobblestone streets and maritime backdrop, this market is perfect for finding one-of-a-kind gifts from local artisans. It runs daily from 10.30am to 5.30pm and you can enjoy carolling throughout December.
New York City may be famous for its towering Rockefeller holiday tree but its festive markets are just as iconic. At the heart of Manhattan, the Union Square Holiday Market is a quintessential stop for locals and tourists alike. With over 180 vendors, the market offers everything from handcrafted jewellery and artisanal candles to speciality food items and holiday decorations. Each stall bursts with festive cheer and live performances add a musical touch to the crisp winter air. The market runs until December 24. For a more European-inspired market, head to Bryant Park’s Winter Village, set under the shadow of the New York Public Library. This market runs until January 5 and offers over 170 boutique-style stalls situated around a
picturesque ice-skating rink. Warm up with festive mulled drinks or indulge in international bites like Swiss raclette or Argentine empanadas. As evening falls, the illuminated skyline adds a magical backdrop to your shopping spree. And don’t miss the Grand Central Holiday Fair, a smaller but equally charming market located inside the iconic Grand Central Terminal. Running until December 24, it’s an ideal option for avoiding the biting winter wind while perusing luxury gifts, artisan foods and unique souvenirs. ✤
Swiss-French watchmaker Reservoir’s latest limited-edition watch is an audacious surprise for fans of Popeye.
An embodiment of passion and energy, Reservoir watches are renowned for their vivacious collaborations. The Franco-Swiss brand’s latest offering is an exclusive limited edition, incorporating Qatar’s natural heritage, a legendary comic and the luxury watchmaker's technical finesse.
The new Reservoir x Popeye Qatar Limited Edition watch takes inspiration from the country’s natural bounty and infuses a comic dose with the famous sailorman, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The watch features Popeye in the centre of the dial, wearing the Ghutrah, standing before the golden sand dunes of Qatar. He is flanked by the nation’s wildlife: the falcon and the oryx. Instead of the classic sprig of spinach, his arm sports the falconry glove and serves as the minute-hand, operating with a self-winding movement.
Cased in 41.5mm brushed steel, the watch is water-resistant to 50m. The back features an open case with a painting of Popeye’s face. Arabic numerals constitute the retrograde minute display
– characteristic of all of Reservoir’s collections, where the hand moves from 0-60 on a 240° arc. The hour marker at six is a jumping hour feature, marking the instant transition of each time period. A dark blue leather strap with blue stitching and a stainless-steel pin buckle provide the sophisticated finishing touches.
Combining Qatar’s natural heritage with Popeye’s spirit of resilience, the watch is a bold statement of amalgamating tradition with modern Swiss craftsmanship. The timepiece epitomises the comic character’s ready-for-anything attitude, reflecting the country’s spirit. The collaboration translates the iconic character’s vigour into a stylish and novel wristwear piece. The limited-edition selection is available only in 30 pieces and is made exclusively for Qatar’s Al Majed Jewellery. ✤
Spanish brand Mango has come up with a festive season collection that will see you into the new year and beyond.
For the girls, it’s all about turning heads in classic ‘70s-style silhouettes – think cropped pants and boob tubes – in a bold palette of black, silver and gold. Velvet, sequins and sheer fabrics add to the luxe feel and faux-fur coats make a bold statement.
Accessories too are eye-catching, with oversized bags and sparkle taking centre stage and the beauty of this collection is that, with its classic colours and fabrics, it’s party style at its best that also looks great as daywear. We particularly love the silver jeans that are just crying out for a posh lunch date.
For guys, Mango Man has gone for autumnal colours in a refined collection of versatile pieces that combine simplicity and elegance. Each look features elevated basics and tailoring with clean lines, balancing style and comfort.
Think padded jackets and cosy sweaters topping tailored pants and well-fitting jeans for looks that are classic and timeless in a palette of browns and creams. ✤

In a much-awaited resurrection, the British rock band The Cure marked their comeback with the release of their latest studio album, Songs of A Lost World. This 14th album comes after a palpable gap of 16 years and has eight tracks, totalling just over 49 minutes.
It seems to pick up where the band left off almost two decades ago. The songs evoke the same music and emotions that fans connect with, giving them a seamless experience and taking them back to the good ol’ days. Co-founder, lead vocalist and guitarist, Robert Smith, has written all the songs, which infuse the band's themes of melancholy, existentialism and mortality, but in a more lived and experienced form. The first track, Alone, is a perfect example of how rock music can age well and stands out as the model of quality some music is lacking today. Warsong and All I Ever Am are pensive and sober, exemplifying the band’s preoccupation with life’s realities without ever sounding weary. This is shown to the hilt with And Nothing Is Forever, A Fragile Thing and I Can Never Say Goodbye, which grapple with ageing and death, especially about Smith's personal experiences.
Smith’s vocals and guitar strumming have remained steady, a testament to the singer’s true talent. The album is a moody ode that stands true to the band’s musical style and essence. Its songs, while being realistically morose, could also be seen as a harbinger of the band’s impending retirement.
That's So True is the latest single from Gracie Abrams' second album, The Secret of Us . The song debuted when she performed it live with Audrey Hobert during her album tour.
The track, which has become an unexpected hit, much to the surprise of the singer herself, is an exploration of heartbreak and all the feels that come with it. It goes through all the motions of grief, jealousy at seeing the new girl, vengeance towards her ex, a brief moment of sympathy, selfrealisation and finally acceptance. That’s So True is an acoustic melody that is easy to vibe with and is relatable with its lyrics and rough guitar strumming. Gracie wears her heart on her sleeve with her lyrics as she makes no effort to hide her agony. With lyrics like: “Made it out alive, but I think I lost it. Said that I was fine, said it from the coffin. Remember how I died when you started walking? That's my life, that's my life,” the song brims with raw emotion. It has been praised for its bridge, which has powerful imagery.
The album's first single, That's So True , gives a positive sneak peek, making fans hopeful for the rest of the tracks.

Here at FACT, we love our canine pals just as much as the next person. Some of us, even more so. But, we’ve spotted a couple of news bites (pun totally intended) this month that have had us wondering if we’re actually neglectful dog parents. First, there was the fashion PR from one of our favourite luxe brands, Malo, the Italian cashmere people, telling us that their line of ultrasoft sweaters and blankets for our four-legged friends has added a range of new colours, such as aqua green and sunny yellow – with a donation going to Animal Park – the shelter of the Municipality
of Florence, the brand’s home. Then we spotted another doggy treat (sorry). Coming in November 2025, the ship Margaritaville at Sea Islander will play host to a sailing, organised by Cruise Tails and Expedia Cruises of West Orlando, on which an expected 250 pooches and their humans will set sail from Tampa on, what’s thought to be, the world’s first dog-friendly cruise. There’ll be gifts and samples from top vendors, dog shows and training, guest speakers, costume contests and parades and pet butlers (read poop scoopers) for each cabin.
Now, our dogs want to know what they’re doing wrong!
So, apparently, the word ‘demure’ has been announced as the 2024 Word of the Year, having topped dictionary.com’s annual list, courtesy of TiKToker Jools Lebron, who went viral after she posted a video using the phrase ‘very demure, very mindful’ when describing suitable looks for the office. Her vid clocked up more than 54 million views leading to a 1,002% increase in the use of the word online. Reading this made us feel a little out of touch. Could we possibly be the only people alive who didn’t know this video even existed? Cue extensive
investigation, AKA a Google search, to discover other Words of the Year. 2016 was ‘dumpster fire’ and 2017 ‘fake news’ – no big surprise there and no further explanation needed. And there have been some other crackers that definitely evoke a particular historical moment, such as World Wide Web, in 1995, and weapons of mass destruction, in 2002.
But our favourite has to be last year’s offering coined by writer Cory Doctorow –it’s a wee bit rude, so if you want to know, you’ll have to do your own research.
We could hardly write a column that highlights the ridiculous without mentioning Comedian, the ‘artwork’ by Italian, Maurizio Cattelan. A simple banana duct taped to a wall, it excited much discussion and controversy when it was first revealed in 2019. And it hit the headlines again this month with the news that a collector has paid almost USD6 million for the piece! Yes, you read that right. Now, that got us to thinking ‘what really constitutes art?’ Many discussion pieces on this work have suggested it’s the artist’s way of poking fun at the high-brow
art establishment and making people question just what they’re looking at. We like that idea, since it makes the display seem a bit fun and a little less totally bonkers.
However, the USD6 million price tag did make us think that perhaps the ‘artist’ is having the last laugh, particularly with a certificate of authenticity that includes instructions for changing both banana and duct tape, after all, the original fiveyear-old versions would surely not be pleasant by now. We can’t help asking if that doesn’t mean the ‘owner’ will actually be creating a new artwork themselves as each fruit, unavoidably, goes rotten?
