How Deep is Your Love? “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” - Charles M. Schulz
W
hat’s up lovebirds? Is that still something people say? It turns out that, after an entire month of typing the word Valentine’s hundreds of times, I’m still no closer to figuring out how I really feel about this annual and very “official” celebration of love. On one hand, February 14 in all its candy, card and flowers glory is a commercially-driven, pressure-imposing day, and on the other it’s when love-budding wild hearts, both young and old, get to do something special for one another. Who wants to get bitter about that? Not me. For all the right reasons, Valentine’s Day in Doha can be your most memorable yet. Turn to p25 and check out For The Love of… where we bring you everything from dinner dates, sweet afternoon treats, spa indulgence, romantic getaways, beautiful gifts and so many more ideas to celebrate love! If you’re really looking to impress, head straight to p37 and check out this month’s special Weekend Spotlight at the instagramworthy Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara, Abu Dhabi. A few days here and you’ll be in the good books for a very long time! My very own love affair, with the one thing that never lets me down in Doha, continues into this month. You’ve guessed it: F.O.O.D. For all the palate-pleasing goodness in the city, we’ve been tasting some of the most incredible cuisines in the capital. In the Culinary Spotlight, we meet the owners of Nişantaşı Başköşe, Doha’s newest Turkish food offering (p79); the Chef ’s Table takes us to palatial heights in Al Sufra at Marsa Malaz Kempinski; whilst On The Menu gets cheerful, casual and super delish at Ocean Basket (p88) and we visit the new outlet of an old favourite in Foodie Corner - Nando’s at the Mall of Qatar - for that crazy-good PERi-PERi chicken. That’s what I call love. Your favourite Netflix episode on the TV and a table full of great food to share with family friends. Of course, a shiny gift or a plane ticket to Paris wouldn’t hurt too... a girl can dream.☺

Eataly Opens in the Mall of Qatar The Azadea Group has opened the first ever Eataly in Qatar, at the new Mall of Qatar. The opening, one of several planned for the brand in the Middle East, comes after three incredibly successful years for Eataly in the UAE, and a recent expansion into KSA.
Italian food fans, get ready for another dose of excellent cuisine. Eataly is a bustling Italian marketplace-style venue offering quality products from Italy’s many regions, alongside artisan creations from local producers, all available at sustainable prices. The main goal is to increase the percentage of those who eat with awareness, choosing high-quality Italian products and paying special attention to the source and processing of raw materials. Founded by Oscar Farinetti, Eataly opened its first location in Torino, Italy in 2007 and now it has 29 shops worldwide. The philosophy adopted by Eataly is twofold: on the one hand it offers products, both for sale and used as ingredients in restaurants; on the other hand, it offers education, including cooking classes, tastings, encounters with great chefs, producers or craftsmen, free education for children and adults. The latter aspect summarises the true originality of Eataly. Luca Baffigo Filangieri, Eataly CEO, said: “Eataly, with its unique approach to celebrating and educating consumers about Italian food, is the ideal fit for the Qatari market and its consumers, who 8

are becoming ever-more sophisticated and nuanced with their food choices. “Eataly’s emphasis on providing consumers with the true taste of Italy, has resulted in worldwide success and recognition. Since its inception in 2007 in Torino Italy, the brand is now a global powerhouse, with outlets in major cities across four continents, including New York, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Dubai and Munich.” Setting it apart from competitors is Eataly’s unique in-restaurant market, where customers can purchase signature products from across every region of Italy such as Afeltra pasta, Antonella tomato sauce, pesto from Niasca Portofino, gluten-free pasta and an exceptional assortment of sweets, biscuits, torrone and chocolate. The new Mall of Qatar store is designed to encourage consumers to explore and discover new dishes and tastes. Eight stand-alone food stations are manned by expert chefs in their fields, each of whom are well versed in the traditional methods of creating authentic Italian fare. ✤ GO: Visit Eataly at The Mall of Qatar.

Qatar Museums Restores Early 20th Century Mosques Qatar Museums (QM) has successfully completed the conservation and restoration of two mosques in Qatar, located in Old Salata and Fuwairit. The project, run under the patronage of its Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, is part of a larger initiative by QM’s Architectural Conservation Department in the Division of Cultural Heritage to restore historical and archaeological sites throughout Qatar, helping to preserve the country’s architectural identity and heritage whilst also balancing progress and embracing the future. Located in Al Old Salata, the Bin Obaid mosque was built in 1935. The original structure of the mosque was built from palm tree trucks, with the ceiling made from palm tree branches. The conservation consisted of replacing damaged materials with traditional, internationally recognised materials, whilst also carefully preserving the authenticity and style of the original building. Following the success of the restoration, which took ten months to complete, the mosque is now ready to 18

welcome Muslims for prayers. The second mosque is located in Fuwairit, an important coastal village in Qatar, approximately 80 km north of the capital Doha. It is an important site for Qatar’s oil industry and rose to regional prominence as the home of the Al Thani family during the early 19th century. The mosque was first built in the 1920’s and was later rebuilt in the early 20th century (late 1960’s)
over the traditional design and the ruins of first structure. The latest conservation and rehabilitation of the Fuwairit mosque included removing damaged plaster layers and waterproof layers off the ceiling, resetting the wall stone structure, treating wooden areas against termites and applying plaster using traditional and waterproof materials. Ali Al Kubaisi, Chief Archaeology Officer at Qatar Museums, said: “At QM, we are very proud to successfully restore these significant and historical mosques. Qatar is a country with a proud and rich heritage, stretching back over thousands of years, and preserving this history for our future generations is vital. “This is not the first time that we have restored an important element of our heritage and it will most certainly not be the last. We will continue our commitment to put local communities, young and old, in touch with their past, reminding them of their ancestors skills, wisdom, and heritage,” he added. ✤ GO: Visit www.qm.org.qa for more information.

Top 3 : Cheap Dates Showing how much your Valentine means to you needn’t break the bank. Here are three things to impress your other half and your wallet… Picnic in the Park: Sometimes, the sweetest gestures are the simplest and most thoughtful. A fool proof plan to impress without causing any distress to yourself and your wallet is to get a quick homemade hamper of food goodies together and head out to one of Doha’s many beautiful green parks; lay down a blanket under the late afternoon sun and have a romantic picnic at sunset. Head to MIA Park for a beautiful spot where you can stroll, participate in activities or just gaze at the Doha skyline from one of the best vantage points in the city. Who needs fancy cutlery when you can eat with your hands and lay on the cool grass? Cycle at Aspire Zone: Get your partner and hire a couple of bikes to cycle around the awesome Aspire Zone track. Part of its commitment
to encourage active lifestyles in the community, Aspire Zone has a circuit which can be used by those who have their own cycles or people can hire a cycle from Aspire Zone. Take it slow and ride side by side whilst enjoying some quality me-time and great conversation or have some competitive fun and race each other en-route. Whatever your cycling style, it’s a great way to get away from the bustle and your gadgets to work up a sweat and keep fit with your special someone. Katara Cultural Village: There’s absolutely no doubt that this is one of the first few places that you’ll have visited in Qatar – and rightly so. Katara is not only a lively hub for meeting up with friends, it’s a fantastic location to walk and people watch as well as visit many free cultural activities like art exhibitions and festivals. Stop
by the Roman amphitheatre with your Valentine and test the amplifying acoustics by standing in the middle of the stage and speaking in a normal voice – what better opportunity to say I love you? A hot cup of karak or a stop for dessert is the perfect way to round off your evening and won’t set your wallet back too much either! ✤ fact magazine

t’s often difficult to find a calm and quiet waterfront resort that also happens to be in an urban location, but this is exactly what the Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara does. It brings together the contemporary touches from metropolitan Emirati life with the natural charm of the mangroves and marina – we can confidently say that there’s no other hotel setting like it in the entire Gulf region. From its light and airy halls and corridors highlighted with mesmerising Arabian design like arched ceilings and neutral tones, you could easily forget that just a few minutes outside the hotel there’s a lively capital city. Lavish local touches are all around. From the immaculately-dressed and helpful staff to the architecture, the gorgeous Anantara Spa and elegant rooms and suites, never have the terms Thai hospitality or Middle Eastern welcome been more fitting than they are for this breathtaking property. On top of this, Anantara Spa uses specialist spa products including the award winning British skincare brand Elemis, Arabian inspired Shiffa products, the signature Anantara Spa product range made from highly prized natural ingredients and the leading advance skin care line QMS Medicosmetics. The key here is to go all out! We opted for the Clinical Skincare Facial and the 100-minute Anantara Signature Hammam experience. The first was a much-needed refreshing boost for our face – treating our pores and getting rid of uneven skin tone – we saw and felt a visibly brighter and tighter complexion, respectively, which lasted for days afterwards. For the ultimate in side-by-side indulgence, the hammam experience will leave you in awe. This six-step ritual combines 40

Our favourite part was the Kese mitt exfoliation which tackled dead skin cells and the coffee body polish which will leave your skin feeling baby-soft and glowing, too. The range of treatments, the attentive and professional service and the Anantara Spa itself will definitely make for one of the biggest highlights of any couple’s visit together. Upon gaining their trust, William and Tovar help fight off mythical beasts that are known to attack the Great Wall of China every 60 years. Fist Fight
“Shot entirely in China, the movie is peppered with Chinese symbolism and certainly evokes a range of emotions.”
What’s it about: Two polar opposite high school teachers battle it out in the most epic fist fight their school has ever seen. What follows are some big time preparations for the off-the-playground fight and its hilarious consequences.
– The Great Wall
Why it’s worth watching? Matt Damon teams up with Chinese bigwigs for the most expensive Chinese movie ever made! An epic culturalcrossover featuring Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal (GoT fans, you know who we mean!), The Great Wall is both historic and futuristic in its cinematic feats and storytelling. Directed by Zhang Yimou, known for his love of out-ofthis-world visuals, the movie has no lack of grandeur and colour. Mercenary soldiers William and Tovar unknowingly decapitate an unidentified creature while trying to save themselves and valiantly fight off these same creatures along with an elite army led by General Shao. Despite the claims of ‘Hollywood Whitewashing’ by Damon’s character, William can be seen being educated and disciplined by the Chinese all throughout the film. Shot entirely in China, the movie is peppered with Chinese symbolism and certainly evokes a range of emotions. If visual effects and CGI float your boat, you’re certainly going to see bang for your buck. It also features a little snippet of romance for all you love buffs out there. Go and watch it for its gripping plot and magical retelling of a legend!

Remnants By LeAnn Rimes
By Train
What better way to kick-start the season of love than immersing yourself in the soulful vocals of Train? The San Fran band returns with their eighth studio album, A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat after the release of their cover album last year. The new record features their unique sound with an amalgamation of old and new musical styles. While it’s their first studio album without lead guitarist and founding member, Jimmy Stafford, they still sound as fresh as ever! Patrick Monahan fuses influences from the past 100 years of music into the band’s latest offering. The band avoids dabbling in something totally modern and out of their depth, sticking to their original music making. Play that song, is an upbeat, feel-good anthem with its chorus borrowed from the 1938 hit, Heart and Soul. The track deviates from their usual peppy beat but is just as contagious. While Lottery is a catchy dance number, perfect for Summer 2K17! The soundtrack gives us vintage Train vibes - if old-timey Train was your jam, you’ll be belting out this tune for days to come. The band creates lyrics that are genuine and personal to them – something that gets a big thumbs up from us. Here’s hoping they cease to go mainstream and embrace their much loved pop-rock roots!
If you can’t stop singing along to LeAnn Rimes’ How to kiss a boy, we don’t blame you! The country crooner returns with her 13th studio record release, Remnants. Country-esque guitar sequences and some brisk mid-tempo drumming are a staple all throughout the album. Long live love reminds us of a contemporary neo-gospel, whereas Do it wrong with me transports us to a magical evening of Jazz. The single How to kiss a boy ranges from restrained to powerful and emotive while telling a story in a way everyone can relate to. The album is a far cry from Rimes’ ‘one genre’ sounding records. It showcases diverse sounds while keeping her exquisite vocals intact. She’s moving past her personal troubles and is reminding everyone that she’s here to stay! The album is a work of optimism and also includes her cover of The story by Brad Carlile. She not just lends her voice to the mesmerising track but truly makes it her own. Remnants is certainly the best Rimes has delivered in years and is a welcome return to form. It deserves a listen!
If you have always viewed rest and relaxation as a sign of weakness and a waste of time, Alex Pang is here to debunk all your theories. Pang presents a fascinating argument for why rest is not just a way to unwind but it can also help you be more productive and creative. In a world where being busy is the norm, Pang makes you view rest in a whole new light. This New Year, rest more and work better. Perfect for the workaholic in your life!

FACT CAUGHT UP WITH Katie Smiles TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HER PASSION FOR classic HOUSE MUSIC, WHAT KEEPS HER MOTIVATED ON THE DECKS AND TO FIND OUT WHAT DOHA’S PARTY CROWD CAN EXPECT... Hi Katie! Tell us more about your involvement as the new DJ at Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas… After almost two years DJing in Abu Dhabi, I felt that the time was right for a change, and luckily the opportunity arose for me to join the team at Grand Hyatt Doha. I am very excited to be in Qatar, working in unison with the hotel’s longstanding resident DJ, Santiago Vittorelli. What is it about DJing that keeps you excited and motivated? My love and passion for music is paramount to what I do. I am constantly on the lookout for new tunes that will entertain the people I play for. Keeping people musically happy is the underlying and motivating factor for me. Describe your DJing style – what type of music do you prefer playing and is there a particular genre/sound that you cater for? I have always been an avid lover of house music and this is the style I predominantly play. There are so many sub-genres nowadays, but classic house music is my passion. Regardless of the label, I just love good music. Modern remixes of older well-known tracks work especially well within my DJ sets. 46

What’s the most challenging thing about being a DJ in 2017? Listening to all the new music that’s out there, laboriously filtering through it and finding the gems to play in public. How would you describe Doha’s party scene and what do you enjoy most about sharing music with the crowd in here? Eclectic, fun and drama free. Making people dance, watching them enjoy the music and having a great time!? What are you hoping to bring, and to achieve, at the Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas? I bring to Grand Hyatt Doha 15 years of global DJing experience, and my goal is to give every guest a memorable experience while I’m on the decks. Finally, what are some of your top tracks for a Valentine’s playlist… There are way too many to mention here. Any great love-themed tracks, particularly if they have a house music beat! ✤ fact magazine

CITY RIDES
FACT travelLED to Dresden to visit VW’s famous ‘glass factory’, and try out the impressive new Volkswagen Tiguan while we’re at it!
52
fact magazine
N
o, the new Tiguan won’t be produced at the glass factory. It was just something impressive to see! Looking more like a posh design studio than an automotive production facility, with its glass and steel structure and polished wooden floors, it previously produced the luxury flagship VW Phaeton, but is now preparing to produce a new model from VW that they were very secretive about! So, back to the new Tiguan, the latest generation of VW ’s highly popular compact CUV. In the GCC, the models with come with three engine options: The 150hp turbocharged four-cylinder 1.4l TSI in the S and SE models, and the 180hp turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0l TSI which will be available in the SE and SEL variants. The 2.0l engine has also been uprated to 220hp for the

Sport model. All come with VW’s dualclutch DSG automatic gearboxes that offer smooth and rapid shifting. On the trip, we tried out the 2.0l TSI options in the SE and SEL models, which are mated to the 7-speed DSG gearbox. Of course, you can’t expect Golf-like levels of performance with the Tiguan, but having said that, for a CUV it certainly isn’t boring. It’s got great pickup, and you can throw it into corners with a confidence you just wouldn’t get with most other crossovers. What also always impresses with a VW, and very much so with the Tiguan, is the attention to detail when it comes to interior comfort and practicality.
The interior styling is supremely clean, modern and stylish, and it’s just a very comfortable place to be. There are plenty of pockets and cubbyholes to store that unavoidable junk that always seems to appear in a car (despite the extinction of CDs and roadmaps thanks to the smartphone!). It’s also hugely practical too, with back seats and front passenger seat that fold almost completely flat, and a big rear hatch for very easy access. The Tiguan’s crossover dimensions almost mean that the rear hatch is lower, making it much easier to load than the Touareg for the school run-mum with pushchair, schoolbags and shopping, etc. fact magazine
53
CITY RIDES
The boot space, rear legroom and headroom have all been improved over the outgoing Tiguan, which already boasted impressive comfort for a crossover. Despite all this, the new Tiguan still feels lighter, sportier and more agile, thanks to the new TSI engines and the 4MOTION all-wheeldrive system. It feels incredibly stable and safe on the road, and can even hold its own on many unpaved surfaces as well, although dune-bashing is obviously not what the Tiguan is built for! In terms of safety and driver assistance, the Tiguan now comes with Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, which assists if it recognises you’re about to have a collision with either a car in front or a wayward pedestrian. There’s also Lane Assist in case your concentration wanders and you’re drifting across the lines. And finally, Adaptive Cruise Control is always a firm favourite of ours, with the Tiguan matching the speed of the car in front in traffic, keeping a safe distance for you at all times. The Tiguan will be available in the Gulf starting at around AED90,000 for the base-spec S model, with the top-spec Sport ringing up at QR132,000. ✤ 54

MOTORING EXCLUSIVE
Motorsport Mayhem Season 8 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East has seen 16 drivers from 12 different countries, including nine newcomers take part in this competitive racing series - this has proved the perfect recipe for action-packed racing and the most exciting season yet. Four races into the 12-race season and there’s nothing to split the top two drivers, both of whom sit on 90 points each. FACT caught up with one of the potential winners, Charlie Frijns ahead of the last few races… Hi Charlie! Take us back to when you first got into racing - what’s your earliest memory of the sport? For as long as I could remember, I was always eager and excited to turn 16, pass my test and get my license. I was also very excited to start racing fast cars and get on the track with my father as he was a racing driver on the side of being a businessman. When I turned 17, I entered my first race alongside him and it was an incredible moment for us to be racing together. We raced in Porsche cars in Europe and took part in different championships where you can change drivers. I took on these opportunities to push hard and learn as much as I can. Also, the more my father was occupied with business, the more I was able to practice and gain experience behind the wheel. What is your preparation like for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East and have you made any modifications to your racing car? This is one of the very unique things that make the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East a rare racing series. It is a one-make series where all drivers are racing the same car – nothing on the engines can be changed and the only modification allowed is on the breaks, tyre pressure and the car’s balance. In preparation for a race, we get a load of track time to test our car and look at the data for areas 56

of improvement. We enjoy a full day of testing and free practice sessions to get things in place before going on the track for a race. This racing series purely focuses on the skill of the driver more than anything else – we’re all driving the same car which pushes us all to develop our racing skills. If you take the Formula One as an example, drivers are each representing a different brand or in different cars and generally, the more powerful engines always take home the checkered flag only because they’re faster. I think this is where the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge can be more interesting for motorsport heads. How would you describe your experience so far in Season 8 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East? To start with, I would say there is no better place than to be sitting at the top of the championship. Competition is very high this season which makes winning two races even more special to me. Especially after a three year wait!

57
Although I am pleased with my performance, it definitely hasn’t been easy but I’m determined to stay at the front and to push harder and build on what I’ve started. What do you like most about being a race car driver? Porsche is a well-established brand and to be building my racing career as part of their racing series is something I’m very proud of. I work hard and to be able to break out of business and get into an activity I enjoy and I’m passionate about, racing on weekends is an opportunity I wholeheartedly look forward to. The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East is a professional series and allows us to compete on some of the best tracks in the world – being in this part of the world to race is an experience I like to make the most of as a car racer. ✤ GO: The final race of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East will take place at the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix in April. Lenovo Smart Assistant

f you have Alexa to thank for making your daily life much more fun and efficient, this one’s for you! Lenovo introduced us to its new smart home appliance at the Consumer Electronics Show, adding to the host of devices that incorporate Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa. While a new Alexa powered device comes as no surprise to us, the Lenovo Smart Assistant claims to provide you with better sound enabling Alexa to understand you more clearly than ever before. The smart assistant has eight microphones for heightened understanding of user voice commands, allowing the device to hear I f v irtual assista n ce you from all angles at long h as bee n your distances. You know what most e x citi n g tec h that means? No more disco v ery, get ready random switching off lights when all you wanted was for more of w h ere some music by Beyonce! t h at came from wit h The device models a t h e i n n o vati v e L e n o v o warmer design compared to Amazon’s speaker. It comes S mart A ssista n t. in a number of colours including grey and green, so, you know it looks as good as it works! Powered with an Intel Celeron N3060 processor, one 5-watt tweeter and one 10-watt woofer, it aims to eliminate the audio issue faced with other smart assistants in the market. Lenovo surely takes its sound seriously as the device also comes in a premium Harman Kardon edition with superior sound, along with the standard model. Amazon Echo and Google Home have been ruling the smart assistant domain, but when it comes to audio, Lenovo’s smart assistant certainly bites the bullet to astounding aesthetic and technical delivery. By coupling the best in software technology and audio in the market, Lenovo is truly on to something big! Though its concept doesn’t do much to completely excite us, its design along with noise suppression and echo cancellation is certainly an improvement. Otherwise, the Lenovo Smart Assistant isn’t all that different from the Amazon Echo. Considering they both share a digital assistant, there’s no wonder that the appliances mirror each other so closely. One bonus is that the Lenovo Smart Assistant is priced cheaper than the Amazon Echo, making it the more pocket-friendly choice. Also, when paired with Alexa, the smart assistant will work across Lenovo’s ecosystem of products as well. The Lenovo device will be connected with a Lenovo app and will work both on iOS and Android. Its new tech elements make the Lenovo Smart Assistant an appealing device, but can it match up to the existing gadgets in the virtual assistance world? That remains to be seen. ✤ 62

WOMEN
The focus is all on the clothes, which mix powerful tailoring with Swedish heritage and handicraft. There’s a fresh interest in a feminine silhouette created by the shoulders and waist, with added drama and posture from gaucho hats and cowboy boots. This collection is about the strength and beauty of women, and how ladies express that power through their style. There’s a strong contrast of tailoring with neat handicraft touches of Swedish folklore, giving the collection’s attire for women a whole new perspective on comfort, embellishment and structure.
MEN
Elevating classic looks, the men’s collection interprets fashion through the quality of the fabrics presented in each carefully designed piece. Using quality garments, timeless style is given a new lease of life; the typical bomber jacket is elongated for a modern twist, and traditional fabrics like wintery corduroy take on utilitarian shapes, and knitwear comes in innovative patterns like irregular ribbing or deconstructed cableknits. T-shirts and tops are presented in silk and fine pima cottons, while accessories like mohair beanies, wool scarves and leather shoes make for excellent wardrobe accompaniments. ✤

Hi Ahmet and Funda! Tell us more about the concept behind Nişantaşı Başköşe – what is the food and hospitality philosophy that it aims to achieve? Our original branch, Nişantaşı Başköşe has been an Istanbul favourite since its opening in 2002, located in one of the most prestigious areas in Istanbul. We pride ourselves in always maintaining the highest quality of classic Turkish meat and kebap dishes that we prepare with a contemporary flair. We use the freshest and purest ingredients available in Turkey in all our recipes. We guarantee only pure bred spring lamb from our own farm in Turkey; which we import regularly to our Doha branch and use for all of our meat dishes. We aim to provide a purely authentic Turkish experience from A to Z, so we flew over our professional Turkish chefs straight from our Istanbul branch, bringing with them years of experience. To sum up, the top quality we ensure in our hospitality philosophy is 100% pure Authenticity. How much of the Istanbul venue has influenced the new Nişantaşı Başköşe venue in Doha – and is there anything you’ve changed up? Our Doha venue is completely influenced by our Istanbul venue, in all its aspects: our colour scheme, contemporary interior design with a traditional Turkish touch, as well as all our chefs who were flown over from Istanbul. We have expanded our original menu in Istanbul for the Doha Branch. Items such as Veal Carpaccio, Lokum, Lamb Shank, Rack of Lamb, Iskender Kebab and of course the Imperial Kebab which is our signature kebab covered with edible 24 carat gold, added sophistication to our original Istanbul branch menu for the customers with a passion for luxury dining in Qatar. What are some of the signature dishes at the restaurant and why do you think they’re so popular? We offer plenty of distinct dishes including our Lamb Chops and Ribs, Çöp şiş; Döner, şiş Kebab and Başköşe Kebab served in a variety of different styles. 80

However I would say that the Veal Lokum and şaşlık are our signature dishes here in Doha. They’re favoured due to their unique taste and juicy tenderness. Tell us a little bit about the ingredients used at Nişantaşı Başköşe Doha – where are they sourced and what inspired the restaurant’s recipes? As briefly touched upon, our Spring lamb is imported directly from our farm in Kırklareli, Turkey. We have been breeding a special type of lamb for eight years now and have just been awarded with the “Elite Farm” certificate by the Turkish Government’s Ministry of Agriculture. This lamb is only being used in our original Istanbul branch and, now, here in our new Doha branch at the Meliá Hotel, Doha. Our home-grown spring lamb is the major component of the unique flavour we’re confident we can offer our customers. As for our veal dishes, only the highestgrade milk fed veal is used, and they are all served with freshly prepared side dishes; made from imported fresh Turkish ingredients of course! fact magazine

Finally, all our spices, pickles, pomegranate molasses, mung beans, tomato paste, pepper paste and even our flour are imported from Turkey to maintain the authenticity and Turkish flavour. What made you expand to Qatar specifically – did you face any challenges in the process of setting up and how did you overcome them? We had been receiving increasing numbers of guests from the GCC to our branch in Istanbul. The vast majority of these visitors have been encouraging us and personally requesting that we open branches in the GCC region, as they were very impressed with the quality of our food and service. Their remarks were that our top notch contemporary yet authentic restaurant would be highly valued in the region as standards of modern Turkish Cuisine like ours, were not being offered. We faced plenty of challenges in importing our products, but we never gave up. After many trials and errors, we’re finally able to supply all our ingredients from A to Z on a regular basis to our Doha branch. What do you believe is the key to running a successful Turkish restaurant? I’ll sum it up with the three most important points: experienced Turkish staff, highest quality of Turkish ingredients, and a top quality location What are your goals for Nişantaşı Başköşe Doha – tell us why diners are going to love the restaurant? We aim to be one of the top five restaurants in Qatar. And we definitely aim to be the best Turkish restaurant! ;) Diners won’t be able to get enough! In addition to the highest quality of food and service, we’ll also be hosting events with distinct packages that include specially tailored cocktails; such as Friday Brunches, Ladies Nights and more! We hope to make our restaurant a place where Qatar’s residents can gather to be offered the best quality of food, service, music, and a modern yet authentically Turkish atmosphere. ✤ GO: Visit Nişantaşı Başköşe at the Meliá Doha Hotel. Levantine Flavours With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we went to check out the romantic ambience at Al Sufra restaurant, located in the majestic Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl-Doha, for the ultimate lowdown on what this Levant-inspired dinner hotspot has to offer, for couples looking for good food and an intimate setting.

f you’re a food aficionado and always on the hunt for traditional cuisine, then Al Sufra is definitely where you should be heading for the perfect infusion of tasty flavours and a stylish setting. Located at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The PearlDoha, this vibrant venue delivers exquisite Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian, Palestinian and Cyprian delicacies. Having become an in-demand culinary joint in Doha, this magical place is known for its grandeur, regal location, and its many gastronomic offerings with an impeccable coffee lounge, open terrace, and its satisfying a la carte dining menu. For our epicurean journey through the Levant, we met up with the man behind the scenes; Executive Sous Chef Julien Al Khal, who looks after the hotel’s Arabic cuisine creations. Ready to savour Al Sufra’s amazing dishes, Chef Julien guided us through every plate. First up was a selection of Cold Mezze; a myriad of options to choose from. We opted for a range that would put the thrill factor on our taste buds. The tasty ride begins with a rich-in-flavour fattoush salad packed with pomegranate, crunchy bites, and fresh greens. Alongside a trio of hummous, this was the just the right start to our meal. Another win was the super fresh bread, made in-house – all the happy carbs! The smoky moutabal will definitely put your palate in a state of nirvana; with a thick texture and tangy bite, it later warms up to a charred finish, leaving you with a pleasantly distinctive taste. But hold on, if cold mezze is not your thing, then fire it up with the tasty Hot Mezze. The chicken liver is a HUGE standout. It’s somewhat of an aphrodisiac and will send your sense of taste into overdrive – highly recommended. Another unusual but beautifully-surprising dish was the Palestinian pie as well as the shrimp mutaffa and the Al Sufra bibbeh baladiyeh kibbeh. Think the best possible dishes for an Arabic feast and you’ve got appetiser heaven. Before the mains arrive, we spend our time admiring the palatial décor of this gorgeous venue with its vivid hues and equally cheerful and professional staff. The popular Seafood Clay Pot, where ingredients are cooked in a pot for roughly seven minutes, is placed on the table. With a mixture of seafood delicacies ready to enrich

your food cravings, you’ll find it hard to fault this delicious main. Next, the Kharouf Michwi, a tender lamb (cooked for 48 hours – wow!) perfectly paired with rice – this is the mighty meat dish that will happily fill you up. To complete this truly Levant dining experience we sealed the deal with a hot and incredibly scrumptious Kunafah – the cheesy-creamy texture had us in awe! Al Sufra isn’t always the first food destination you think of at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski but that should change right now; it’s classy yet casual, the food will blow you away with its innovative flavours and presentation, and the staff will assure that you’re enjoying five-star service from start to finish. What more could you ask for? ✤ GO: Visit Al Sufra restaurant at Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl-Doha. Open daily from 12.30pm to midnight. Call 4035 5011 for reservations and more information.

odyssey Dining: Inspiring seafood When you walk into Ocean Basket in the Mall of Qatar, you’re met with a genuine seaside charm. In real South African style, the FACT team was greeted by friendly faces to enjoy an oceanic feast unlike anything we’ve ever seen (or tasted) before. Let’s go…

very now and then, we get a major craving for seafood but don’t want to go into a 5-star hotel or luxury neighbourhood to find appetising cuisine. Instead, a casual atmosphere with a chilled-out vibe, where the staff will make you feel like family and the food is both quality-made and incredibly delicious – that’s all we’re asking for. It’s not too much, right? Not for one of the newest culinary players in town; enter Ocean Basket. 88

The story behind this much-loved South African restaurant chain is as inspiring as its menu. When the first Ocean Basket restaurant opened its doors in 1995, South Africa had just held its first democratic elections. The air was charged with optimism and apprehension. And now, the delicious smell of seafood too. Founder Fats Lazarides saw an opportunity to create something that customers were calling a restaurant that served delicious affordable seafood. In those days the restaurant included a fresh fish deli. Seafood restaurants were reserved for the upper crust, and a portion of prawns was a real extravagance. But Fats had always been one to swim against the current. The first Ocean Basket in Menlyn Park Centre, Pretoria was a measly 60 square meters, with just six tables. The menu offered only a handful of dishes, including prawns, hake, calamari and Kingklip. That was it. Plus, the landlord imposed restrictions on what could be sold, only one wine and a small selection of soft drinks could be served. In true Ocean Basket spirit, Fats invited customers to bring their own drinks and even their own salads. It was only a matter of time before Pretoria had fallen in love with this loud, crazy, Mediterranean deli and restaurant. 90

Now, much of the menu is inspired by the freshness of Mediterranean cooking and the love of good food in South Africa. We started with a taste of the MediterrAsian Sushi. This delicious fusion of Ocean Basket’s traditional Mediterranean flavours combined with classic Asian tastes result in a very unique spin on a popular dish. Our favourites were the Lemon Salmon Roll and the Wasabi Prawns. Both extremely well prepared with a slight kick that leaves you wanting more. Even a non-sushi lover would be converted by these beauties. Next we had the Village Salad with both Fried and Grilled Halloumi Cheese. JUST. WOW! The ingredients were fresh, tastefully presented and served family-style. At Ocean Basket it’s all about coming together and sharing an amazing dining experience. This was proven to us by the delectably-decadent platter of seafood that followed. We shared the Platter for Two which had a variety of mouthwatering seafood including fried Calamari, Mussels soaked in the most heavenly Lemon Butter Sauce (it was so good that some of the team ordered a separate bowl of sauce which was then used for dipping and drizzling at will – yum!), and grilled prawns, to name but a few of the choices. All of this was served on a bed of rice. To say that we ate like kings
on the menu is an understatement - and we’d highly recommend this platter for groups of friends and families. The final part of the seafood madness and perhaps, the most important as this is where Ocean Basket’s roots lie – Fish and Chips. Served in a stainless steel pan, with a golden batter that is deep fried to perfection, and your choice of rice or french fries. The fish - Hake - is imported from South Africa and this only adds to the authenticity of the experience. Needless to say that by the time the dessert was served we were almost incapable of enjoying the Baklava that we were served. ALMOST. With golden flaky layers of filo pastry stuffed with nuts and topped with syrup, this was the most incredible way to end what proved to be a magnificent meal. During the entire evening we had an endless supply of truly delicious Mint Lemonade served in a Carafe, again adding to the family atmosphere. This was an experience that we won’t stop bragging about anytime soon! ✤ GO: Visit Ocean Basket at the Mall of Qatar. Call 4490 2944 for reservations and more information.

he new Nando’s venue to open in the Mall of Qatar is the restaurant chain’s eighth branch in Doha. It doesn’t come as a surprise that the love and demand for tasty chicken hasn’t died out (and isn’t going to anytime soon) in Doha. After stepping into the new Nando’s, we were further convinced about why this chicken franchise has gained the reputation is has – and why it continues to grow; IT’S THE FOOD. Firstly, we’re impressed by this venue in particular. Its décor is noticeably different from other Nando’s restaurants in Qatar. It features 35 art pieces from South Africa, on display as part of the Nando’s Art Initiative. This is a programme designed to showcase South African talent across the world and tells us just how proud and passionate Nando’s is about its South African roots. Currently, over 17,000 art pieces are being showcased in 24 countries worldwide with the Nando’s Art Initiative nurturing Southern African talent, with

towards when sitting down to eat at Nando’s, but ones that you definitely shouldn’t rule out! Out came the Veg Espetada from the very innovative Veggie Peri-Dise menu. Made up of tender grilled paneer, mushroom, broccoli and bell peppers with your choice of PERi-PERi, served on a skewer – this dish is veggie magic. Eat it with rice or fries (or both) and get ready to surprise your taste buds with a main course that speaks just as loudly in flavour than any of the chicken menu items. The vegetables are juicy and taste even better with the Nando’s signature PERi-PERi sauces. Following this tantalising plate was the Quinoa Salad – the first thing we notice is the generous portion size – it’s PERFECT for sharing! With sweet potato and avocado chunks, piccolo tomatoes, cucumber, mixed salad leaves and a good sprinkling of feta cheese, sesame and roasted seeds, all we had to do is drizzle some medium PERi-PERi sauce on top and voila – you’ve got yourself a delicious and healthy main. For those of you who can’t resist, you have the option to add chicken to this salad – it’s a win-win situation! Next came Something Exotic - grilled paneer and fresh watermelon with PERi-PERi of your choice, served on a skewer. This was a surprisingly excellent dish because the mix of sweetness from the watermelon combined with the salty, smoky halloumi cheese, we finished it off with real gusto. Again, ideal for sharing as an appetiser or eating for one as a main – the choice is yours! The Mango and Lime flavour is the latest addition to the PERi-Ometer. Made for those who want a kick of vibrant taste but prefer it without the chilli heat. If you’re like us, then you go for the hot EVERY.SINGLE.TIME!
