Out And About
"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." “
As we head into summer, it’s time to enjoy the last balmy days before the weather becomes truly scorching. And, for us, that means getting outside, while we still can. Our Cover Story this month takes a look at outdoor activities, from the sublime, such as visiting Arabian horses, to the slight bonkers – parachuting anyone? I have to say, I had great fun putting this feature together and finding out just how much Qatar has to offer. Hope you enjoy reading it.
In our Dining section, we’ve not only got our regular reviews and roundup of great deals for you to try but also coverage from the much-anticipated Fact Dining Awards Qatar 2024. It was a wonderful evening in which we paid tribute to all the stars of the country’s hospitality industry. I want to say thank you to each and every one of you that voted –check out the pictures in our special feature.
Speaking of the awards, on the night, we also got to meet the lovely Waleed Maisery, who not only looks after the career of our MC but also produces films, all while practising as a lawyer. You can find out more about him in the Arts & Culture section. In the Motoring section, look out for my our report from Seoul, South Korea, where my colleague got to attend the launch of some new Genesis models. And, in Travel, we’ve stuck with the outdoor activities theme to bring you destinations for active adventurers.
We also have our usual roundups of news from the worlds of sport, tech, entertainment and fashion plus some great snippets from around the country in the Listen Up section. Happy reading everyone.

A NEW TASTE OF MOROCCO
New Moroccan eatery Salama promises diners an Oriental journey of higher taste coupled with vibrant entertainment.
Taking inspiration from the rich culinary heritage of Morocco, glammed up on the French Riviera and now broadening its horizons, Salama has opened its first GCC restaurant at the heart of the fashionable Al Maha Island.
Originally created in 1999 by a French couple, Frédérique and Fabrice Dorel, in buzzing Saint-Tropez and Cannes, in 2024, Mohamed Hedi Mardassi acquired the brand and developed a partnership with Aura Group International to bring Salama to the thriving Qatari market.
“With Salama, we [have the] ambition to create the GCC’s premiere destination for Moroccan gastronomy, with its unique blend of Riviera chic and warm Oriental hospitality,” he said.
Imagined by Chef Ramdane Djebarri, who was part of the glory days of Momo and Mamounia Lounge in London, the 1,001 flavours of Salama will unfold as a modern-day tale of Moroccan cuisine. The menu runs the gamut from reinvented fresh salads, briouates, pastillas, couscous and tagines to delicious main courses and Josper-grilled meats. And desserts provide a sublime conclusion, with such signatures as the Mar’rakshi Millefeuille, Oriental Crème
Brûlée and Orange Blossom Ile Flottante to name a few.
To complement the remarkable culinary creations, the bar menu will take guests to the legendary Spice Route, infusing timeless classics with arabesque spices, herbs, fragrances and flavours, as a prelude to nights of elegant music and entertainment.
Finally, Salama unveils an exclusive gateway to the breathtaking allure of the French Riviera. Nestled amidst pristine sands and shimmering azure waters, it boasts a private beach that embodies an atmosphere of refined sophistication and carefree indulgence.
Aura Group CEO, Yasser Zein, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to introduce Salama to the blooming culinary landscape of Doha. The concept is a welcome addition to our own exciting portfolio of high-end brands, perfectly suited to the taste of the market and delightfully disruptive all at once.” ✤

AI CULTURAL COLLABORATION
Qatar’s Msheireb has partnered with Metahug to launch a cultural exploration experience on Roblox.
The pioneer in cultural preservation and innovation collaborated with the visionary gaming studio, to launch an immersive Roblox experience that allows players to explore the richness of Qatari culture.
Blending education with interactive gaming, it showcases Qatar’s sustainable innovations, creative chops and deeprooted traditions with the Roblox platform hosting a series of mini-games, each crafted to highlight a different facet of Qatari life and history.
At launch, players will be able to participate in six unique games, starting with Pearl Hunt, which pays homage to Qatar’s pearl diving heritage. And the experience will include activities inspired by Msheireb Properties' vision for human-led design with activities including designing sustainable fashion inspired by traditional Qatari attire and creating furniture that reflects the region’s architectural elegance. Additional mini-games will educate players about Arabic typography and the history of Bedouin lifestyles, celebrating Qatar’s commitment to sustainability and design.
Msheireb Properties' ethos was instrumental in creating the project, combining the ingenuity of the world’s first sustainably regenerated downtown with the Doha Design District’s ambitions as a creative lab for global design talent.
This partnership not only highlights Msheireb’s dedication to cultural preservation but also aligns with Metahug’s mission of educating through engagement. Working closely with Lian Pham, co-founder of Metahug, the collaboration leaned into Metahug’s education in gaming expertise through its flagship Play2Learn educational initiative that teaches kids to learn without knowing they’re learning.
"By integrating educational elements with the fun and excitement of gaming, we aim to create a more enriching experience that teaches players about the significant cultural heritage of Qatar," said Shaikha Al Sulaiti, Senior Manager of the Doha Design District, Msheireb Downtown Doha. ✤

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
The stifling heat of summer is not quite upon us, so it’s the ideal time to make the most of the balmy weather and one thing Qatar is certainly not short of is fun outdoor activities. From sailing to kite surfing and from rock climbing to water parks there’s something for everyone to enjoy over sea, land and even in the air!
ALL AT SEA
As the old song goes ‘we do like to be beside the seaside’ and, while lounging on the beach is lovely, there’s so much more to experience on and even under the waves.
Bubbles Up – Warm crystal-clear water and calm weather conditions make a perfect scenario for scuba diving in Qatar. Explore a fabulous underwater world of marine animals, shipwrecks, limestone formations and shoals of colourful fish in the tropical waters of the Arabian Gulf. There are plenty of options around such as Discover Qatar’s Discover Scuba Diving sessions for beginners or check out Doha Sub Aqua Club on Facebook, which hosts diving every weekend as well as activities such as barbecues and seabed cleans.
Find out more at discoverqatar.qa/discover-scubadiving/overview
Enter The Dragon – No, we don’t mean the Bruce Lee film (are we showing our age there?) but rather the popular sport of Dragon Boating. For the uninitiated, you’ve probably seen these on TV in the opening credits of the original Hawaii Five-0 (OK, officially ancient), they look like giant canoes with dragon heads on the bow, crewed by teams of several eager paddlers. Racing is great fun and Qatar has an active scene. Around 11 groups paddle Friday mornings at sunrise from Katara Beach and meet during the week for fitness training. There’s also the Wireless Warriors group, which is a paddle session for breast cancer survivors.
Find out more by visiting Qatar Dragon Boat Alliance on Facebook.
Fly A Kite – Kite surfing has rapidly gained local popularity in recent years with the country even hosting the Qatar Airways GKA Freestyle Kite World Cup earlier this year at Fuwairit Kite Beach. Wearing a special harness, participants take to the water on a board behind a large, specially constructed kite which catches the wind pulling them across the waves and allowing them to ‘fly’ sometimes several metres into the air. It requires significant upper body strength but is great fun once you get the hang of it. Head to Fuwairit Kite Beach, Tapestry Collection by Hilton for the ideal stopping off point before you hit the waves.

PRESENTS:
Have a fabulous Peruvian celebration with us every Friday for a fun ‘Yunza’ themed brunch! Dine on Peruvian specialties and vibrant dishes and enjoy live Latin music from our popular live band and performers. Perfect for a lively Friday afternoon that echoes the festive fun of the La Yunza festival in Peru.
Every Friday, 1pm – 4pm La Mar Doha Beachfront, InterContinental® Doha Beach & Spa +974 4484 4919 3391 2820
Jet Set – Jet skis or aqua bikes are hugely popular here in Qatar. Head to pretty much any stretch of water and you’ll spot them charging through the waves – it’s probably the closest thing to riding a high-powered motorbike on water and the feeling of the wind in your face is exhilarating and gives an amazing sense of freedom, plus it’s a great way to cool off. There are numerous spots to rent the craft from Katara to Lusail and, for the serious enthusiast, Doha Marine Sports Club, at Katara, recently attracted a host of international entrants to the Qatar Aquabike Championship.
Find out more at Doha Marine Sports Club on Facebook or @dmsc_official
Look Below – Not quite ready for the full under water experience? Fair enough, but anyone and everyone can enjoy snorkelling and all you need is a mask and snorkel, which are not expensive. Head to Al Aaliya Island, an uninhabited spot surrounded by a coral reef that’s home to a variety of marine life. It’s one of the finest destinations for snorkelling, fishing and kitesurfing. Uninhabited, tranquil and scenic, it’s the ideal spot to get back to nature.
Set Sail – At this time of year, particularly with the glorious windy weather we are currently enjoying, there really is no better place to be than on the open water in a sailboat. But, don’t be fooled, despite this sport’s glamorous image – think sleek yachts moored in the harbour at Cannes – if you’re actually doing the sailing, it can be pretty hard work. So, look forward to a workout as well as a great day out. Doha Marine Sports Club offers lessons for both adults and kids as well as race sailing and even traditional dhow sailing, which looks awesome.
Find out more at Doha Marine Sports Club on Facebook or @dmsc_official
Wing It – Yep, it’s a new one on us too. Described a cross between kiteboarding, windsurfing, surfing and paddleboarding, wing surfing is when you stand on a board and hold onto a wing which generates upward force and sideways propulsion. Pretty much flying across the water, this sounds like great fun. It’s only available in Qatar at Blue Pearl Experience, where you can also try kite surfing (they offer lessons), stand-up paddle boarding, regular and kayaking. Midweek Massage
Embark on a 60 minutes transformative massage to revitalize your body, mind & soul
LAND LUBBERS
While much outdoor activity takes place in or on the water, there’s still plenty to do if you prefer to keep your feet firmly on solid ground.
Dune Daredevils – Almost a national sport in Qatar, you can’t live here or even visit without giving dune bashing a try. Either take your own (well maintained) four-wheel-drive vehicle out into the desert and let loose or book a tour where you can take part in activities such as dune bashing and sand boarding during a desert safari. Find out more at viator.com
Hop On A Bus – Yes, even those who were born in Qatar or have lived here for years will find something new to discover in a day’s sightseeing. You could, of course, just take to the streets. After all, from a range of museums to Souq Waqif and lots of parks, you’ll certainly not be short of things to see. But, we like the idea of the hop-on-hop off bus. Multi-language audio guides are available and a 24-hour ticket allows you to take as many rides as you like. Plus, it gets you a free onehour night tour, a relaxing drive around the city. Find out more at dohabus.com
Horsing Around – We have to admit we haven’t tried this one but we really want to. If you fancy the chance to meet some stunning equines, Al Shaqab stands as an enduring tribute to the Arabian horse and the tradition of equestrian excellence that has co-evolved with this breed in Qatar. And, even better, its open for visitors. You can arrange a guided tour, where you can watch the animals exercise, swim, train or get groomed. Find out more at visitqatar.com
One of India’s dining landmarks is now in Doha. Located at Dusit Hotel & Suites – Doha in West Bay.
On Your Bike – When you live in a place that holds the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous cycle track, at 33km, it almost seems rude not to take to two wheels. The Olympic Cycling Track at Al Khor Coastal Road covers 29 bridges and five underpasses to encourage continuous safe riding away from the road. It also has plenty of cycle parking and links up with various other tracks. For something a bit less taxing, try the track around Lusail International Circuit. It’s 5.3km and they have bikes for hire. Find out more at visitqatar.com
Pick Up A Padel – We can almost guarantee that you’ve heard of this relatively new sport by now. But, if not, it’s described as a blend of both tennis and squash; the perfect combination of action filled with fun that keeps you fit. Age doesn’t matter padel’s a fantastic activity all. With an easy-tohold stringless racket and a low compression tennis ball, the game is highly addictive and it’s usually played in doubles, so there’s someone to blame if it all goes horribly wrong! Courts have sprung up all over the county and Qatar Padel Open Tournament took place in April. Find out more at qatarpadel.com
Rocking It – To be honest, we’re not really sure that this shouldn’t be in the sky section, but either way, we love the idea of rock climbing. For the adventurous and experienced there are some great rock formations at Zekreet National Park with more than a dozen routes to try. However, if you’re a beginner or don’t want to travel so far, EsQalar has outdoor climbing walls and offers day passes and lessons Find out more by calling 5553 7177.

UP IN THE AIR
Among The Clouds – Sensible people might ask why anyone would choose to throw themselves out of a perfectly serviceable plane. Then there are sky divers! You might think they’re mad but, trust us, if you can muster the courage, parachuting is an absolutely amazing experience. Jumping out among the clouds and then floating soundlessly to Earth as you take in the magnificent scenery all around. And, if you’re not up for a solo ascent, you could always get a taste for it with a tandem dive, where you’re strapped to an experienced skydiver.
Find out more at skydiveqatar.com
Flying High – A hot air balloon ride is a bucket list item for lots of people and where better to take to the skies than above the landscape of Qatar’s open desert and the capital’s iconic buildings. Flights take off in the early morning as close to sunrise as possible – how cool is that? Can you imagine just floating silently through the air as the sun rises over the horizon? But, they are subject to prevailing weather conditions, though in summer this is not usually a problem. There are various places to book tours but we’ve definitely heard good things about Asfary whose branded ballons are a common sight in our skies.

Paratrike Adventures - If you’re looking for a uniquely fascinating experience that’s a heady mix of calmness and adrenaline, your might want to consider a paratrike. It’s a tricycle connected, via a large paraglider, to a motorised propeller that lets you fly. The seats carry two people, so you’ll be accompanied by a professional, allowing you to sit back, relax and take in the spectacular bird’s eye view. There’s also the option for four people to fly together. Sky Masters Sports Club are the leading providers of aerial adventures in Qatar and they can provide everything you need to get airborne..

AN IMPRESSIVE DUAL LAUNCH
FACT spent five days in the captivating Korean city of Seoul to witness the unveiling of two exceptional Genesis luxury SUVs.
In recent years, we have been keeping a close eye on the rise of the highly impressive Genesis brand, a car manufacturer seeming to improve with every new offering produced. As the luxury vehicle brand of the Hyundai Motor Company, they have firmly established themselves as global contenders in the upmarket segment, having produced some of the finest high-end saloons, coupes, convertibles and SUVs on the roads today.
FACT recently travelled as guests to the home of Genesis in Seoul, South Korea, to attend the global launch of the GV80 Coupe and the unveiling of the new redesigned GV80, We want to take this opportunity to give a big thank you to Genesis Qatar for making this first-class adventure a reality.
Seoul, South Korea
From the moment we touched down, we found South Korea to be a beautiful and efficient country filled with friendly and respectful people, including our gracious hosts at Genesis, who ensured we felt welcome and comfortable throughout our stay. Immediately apparent was the huge number of Genesis vehicles driving on the city streets. There is no doubt that locals and visitors alike have warmly embraced this homegrown brand.
Launch Night
After a quick unpack at the magnificent Grand Walkerhill Hotel, Seoul, we were chauffeured around the city, enjoying activities such as the fascinating Genesis Experience Centre Suji Tour. On our first evening in South Korea, we attended the highly anticipated launch of the GV80 Coupe and the reveal of the new redesigned GV80, held at the prestigious Seoul Wave Art Centre in the city’s famed Hangang Park.
Redesigned GV80
As fans of the original GV80, we were intrigued to discover what the manufacturers had accomplished with the redesign.
Updated Exterior Design
The improved GV80 features numerous exterior upgrades, including a freshly designed Two-Line Crest Grille complemented by the signature Two-Line headlamps. We appreciated how the master crafters at Genesis have refined the overall elegance of this luxury SUV through the now smoother corner lines of the Crest Grille, along with the sleek look of the headlamps – made possible with MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology.
Striking design elements, like the larger air intakes and a wide skid plate on the front bumper, enhance the refined and robust persona of the updated GV80. One of our favourite external features has to be the guilloché-patterned emblem that adds a graceful finishing touch to an already alluring SUV.
We took in the new chrome trim that extends seamlessly through the sides, helping the car exude a powerful presence from bumper to bumper. Noise-absorbing 22-inch, multi-spoke dark grey matte wheels contribute to the SUV’s solid stance and ensure best-in-class ride tranquillity.
The impressive nature of the vehicle continues at the back end, where muffler tips integrated into the bumper further elevate the car’s sophisticated design. A distinctive V-shaped chrome trim adds to the futuristic look of the model, while the lower part of the bumper makes a statement with its bold body-coloured line.
Enhanced Interior Design
The beauty of the GV80’s exterior flows effortlessly into the firstclass cabin, where we were welcomed by comfortable seating,
an impressive array of modern features, quality materials and various design enhancements. It became obvious the GV80 has been designed to elevate the daily lives of owners through an all-encompassing, in-car luxury experience.
The two-tone-coloured steering wheel has been immaculately designed and feels faultless in hand. We also admired the new elevated pedal design, the improved crash pads and the wellcrafted centre console featuring Nappa leather and genuine wood. Standing out amongst the extensive list of advanced tech features are the 14.6-inch rear seat smart entertainment system, the Bang & Olufsen sound system and the impressive 27-inchwide OLED display that smoothly integrates the cluster and the Audio, Video, Navigation (AVN) screen.
Other must-mention internal features include the seamless design of the centre facia, the wide-angle digital centre mirror, the redesigned crystal-like Shift By Wire (SBW), the improved wireless smartphone charging tray and the touch-based Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system that gifts the driver with extreme ease of control.
Improved Performance
On our second day in South Korea, we took the upgraded GV80 out for a spin.
Our model was equipped with the potent 3.5-litre turbo engine, complemented by near-perfect suspension, handling and braking capabilities. This enables the new GV80 to deliver 380hp and 54.0kgf·m of torque.
To us, however, the most impressive performance upgrade was the overall smoothness of the ride, made possible by the Preview Electronic Control Suspension System (Preview ECS), which optimises control of the suspension by anticipating road conditions and the Engine Mounting Control Unit (EMCU), which detects road surfaces to reduce driving vibrations.
In our opinion, these inclusions, complemented by the vehicle’s numerous advanced safety and assistance features, ensure the
It became obvious the GV80 has been designed to elevate the daily lives of owners through an all-encompassing, in-car luxury experience.”
GV80 is now in contention for the best mid-sized luxury SUV in the market today.
GV80 Coupe Launch
For this special launch, one luxury SUV reveal was not enough. We also had the absolute pleasure of witnessing the unveiling of the ultra-stylish, new GV80 Coupe.
Eye-Catching Exterior
We have to say that Genesis have outdone themselves with these two new editions – the coupe adding a new facet to the Genesis brand.
As with the GV80, we became absorbed by the doublelayered G-Matrix Grille and MLA-powered LED headlamps that announced the arrival of this coupe in style.
At the front end, we also admired the expanded air intake, Active Air Flap, and four air vents that improve engine cooling while contributing to the vehicle’s bold demeanour.
Shifting to the flanks, we found the arch-shaped parabolic line spanning the body and the low, sloping roofline to achieve a perfect balance, providing an excellent finish to the dynamic and powerful look of the exterior. Further enhancing this bold presence are the coupe-exclusive 22-inch dark grey matte wheels with distinctive spokes.
We also recognised the unique design of the back end, complete with LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps, along with a wide integrated auxiliary brake light on the tailgate. A centrally descending rear spoiler adds a sporty touch, finishing the exterior design with a flourish.
Sporty Interior
Our first impression of the roomy GV80 Coupe’s interior was that it exudes a sporty sensibility.
The two-tone D-cut steering wheel reinforces this feeling while maintaining an essence of elegance. We loved the unique carbon garnish patterns and seats with the coupe-exclusive patterns and stitching, accentuating the refined nature of the design.
We noted the practical metal accents on the brake and accelerator pedals, included to minimise the risk of foot slippage during operation.
Furthermore, thanks to the optimisation of the engine room layout and chassis, along with the incorporation of rear seat reclining functionality, the interior of the GV80 Coupe proved to be very spacious. An optimised trunk package and a foldable luggage shelf ensure plenty of storage room.
As in the GV80, the coupe model houses an array of advanced technical features, including the 27-inch-wide OLED display, the 14.6-inch rear seat smart entertainment system, the wide-angle digital centre mirror and the before mentioned Bang & Olufsen sound system. These and numerous other convenient features ensure an efficient and leisurely driving experience.
Exhilarating Performance
During the second day of our stay in Seoul, we were also privileged to get behind the wheel of the GV80 Coupe. Powered by a 3.5-litre turbo 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C) that delivers 415hp and 56.0kgf·m of torque, we soon realised the coupe model is as impressive on the tarmac as the GV80.
This model’s potent and innovative engine compresses air twice to maximise torque and improve acceleration, ensuring a performance that had us smiling from ear to ear throughout. As with the GV80, Genesis have ensured the smoothest of rides by including Pre-view ECS and EMCU.
The coupe is also jam-packed with the latest advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and safety features, including 10 airbags and powerful mono-block brake calipers, to ensure the well-being of all occupants.
Our Generous Hosts
Not content with spoiling us for two days, our gracious hosts from Genesis ensured we enjoyed many other fascinating experiences over the following days. Our highlights included a tour of the Hyundai Motor Studio, the breathtaking Seoul Sky Tour and scrumptious meals at several high-end restaurants.
Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow
All too soon, we were packing up with heavy hearts before being driven to Seoul Incheon International Airport. Despite our sadness at departing from this delightful city, we left feeling grateful for having such a magnificent experience.
We want to thank Genesis and the city of Seoul for making us feel so welcome and for sharing the launch of two exceptional vehicles. We know they will prove hugely successful in the mid-sized luxury SUV segment. ✤

The new General Manager of Delta Hotels by Marriott City Center Doha talks property enhancements and work-life balance.
Congratulations on your new position. What was it about the hospitality industry that first attracted you and, after 25 years, is that attraction still strong?
The hospitality industry is attractive because it offers me and other hoteliers the chance to create unforgettable experiences, by building a professional relationship with travellers from all over the planet – these guests sometimes become friends. The vibrant environment in hospitality always keeps me feeling excited by my job. I Love what I Do!
Why did you decide to join Delta and what are your plans for the property?
Delta Hotels' commitment to simplicity and elegance aligns perfectly with my vision for hospitality. I was drawn to Delta by its reputation for providing a seamless guest experience, where every detail is thoughtfully curated to enhance comfort and convenience. For the property, I plan to further elevate our service standards, focussing on personalised experiences that exceed guest expectations. This includes enhancing and refreshing our accommodations and introducing new leisure amenities.
Can guests and visitors expect any new developments at Delta over the coming months – for example new restaurants/ menus, room or leisure upgrades?
The changes can already be seen; from the minute you step into the hotel entrance up to the 32nd floor. We have already worked on and finalised various different projects, we elevated our feel and look, we have rebranded two restaurants and there are more projects in the pipeline, all geared toward increasing both comfort and functionality. We're excited about these developments and
can't wait to share them with our guests soon!
You’ve previously mentioned the challenges faced as a working mum, how do you combine your professional and personal lives given the famously difficult work-life balance aspect of the hospitality industry?
It is a challenge to balance my demanding career in hospitality with family life, but it is a challenge that I embrace with open arms. It is in setting clear priorities and open lines of communication with the team and family and the practice of mindfulness that I have found success in balancing the two. I also try to set an example with my team, showing them that balance can be achieved and success in professional and personal spheres is possible.
Can you tell us three things on your bucket list?
My ambition is to grow within the reputable Marriott International brand and rise to the esteemed position of Market Vice President.
By leveraging my skills and experiences, I aim to make impactful contributions to the company's growth while serving as a role model for aspiring female leaders.
One of the most cherished moments on my bucket list was witnessing the proud culmination of my children's educational journey as they graduated from university. This milestone represents not only their hard work and dedication but also the fulfilment of my commitment to nurturing their growth and success. As I advance in my career and personal development, I aspire to explore diverse cities and cultures across the globe. Whether for business or leisure, each destination offers invaluable opportunities for learning and self-discovery, enriching my perspective as a hotelier, leader and individual. ✤
A SWEET LOVE AFFAIR
What first attracted you to the sweeter side of kitchen life?
From an early age, I was captivated by the precision and creativity involved in pastry making. The ability to transform simple ingredients into intricate, beautiful and delicious creations fascinated me. The artistic aspect of pastry, combined with the joy it brings to people, drew me to the sweeter side of kitchen life. There's something magical about creating desserts that can evoke memories and emotions.
Your bio mentions that you combine French classics with a touch of fun nostalgia. How do you inject a retro feel and can you give some examples?
Injecting a retro feel into my creations involves reimagining classic French desserts with a playful twist that evokes a sense of nostalgia. For instance, I take inspiration from traditional French pastries like éclairs and macarons but introduce flavours and presentations reminiscent of childhood favorites and, of course, add the local touch.
After 30 years in the kitchen, what is the achievement you’re most proud of?
As for achievements, I am most proud of the mentorship and internal training programmes I’ve developed for aspiring pastry chefs. Seeing my protégés grow and succeed in their careers brings me immense satisfaction.
What is your signature dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular?
My signature dish is the Mille-Feuille. This classic French dessert, also known as the Napoleon, was developed through a meticulous process of perfecting each layer to achieve the ideal balance of texture and flavour. It features delicate, crispy layers of puff pastry, alternating with smooth and rich pastry cream, topped with a thin layer of fondant or powdered sugar.
The development of this dish involved countless trials to ensure that the puff pastry achieved its perfect flaky consistency and that the pastry cream was luxuriously creamy yet light. I experimented with various flavours and techniques, eventually settling on a combination that includes a hint of vanilla and a secret touch to elevate the traditional recipe.
What makes the Mille-Feuille popular is its timeless elegance and the contrast of textures – the crunch of the pastry against the smoothness of the cream. It’s visually stunning, with its intricate layers and polished presentation, making it a showstopper on any dessert table. Guests appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into creating each Mille-Feuille, making it a beloved and memorable dessert.
That having said, though the Mille-Feuille has a piece of my heart, I also very much enjoy creating bespoke cakes for special occasions such as the celebration of love or birthdays, when it is a great joy to see our visitors' faces when they are presented with something unique and beautiful. ✤
A SLICE OF MILAN IN DOHA
AMS discovered a traditional taste of Italian history on a visit to SPONTINI.
As we stepped into Pizzeria SPONTINI at The Pearl, we were immediately embraced by a vibrant, bustling atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Italian pizzeria. The tantalising aroma of freshly baked dough wafted through the air, inviting us to explore the rich culinary offerings of this charming eatery. The interior was an inviting blend of rustic charm and modern flair.
The open kitchen, dominated by a traditional wood-fired oven, exuded warmth and authenticity. Sleek black tiles and industrial elements contrasted beautifully with the stacked logs and wellarranged shelves, evoking a cosy, artisanal feel.
We chose to sit outside in a lively area, where lovely fairy lights twinkled overhead, casting a magical glow over our table. The outdoor seating provided a perfect vantage point to enjoy the bustling atmosphere of the Pearl, adding an extra layer of charm to our dining experience.
A Fresh Start
Our meal began with a refreshing note as we indulged in a fresh salad. The crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and tangy vinaigrette awakened our palates, setting the stage for the hearty fare that was to follow. Complementing the salad were perfectly golden French fries, each bite delivering a satisfying crunch.
Pasta Perfection
The pesto pasta, which followed, was a revelation, with its al
dente texture and rich, aromatic sauce. The basil pesto, vibrant and fragrant, coated the pasta in a creamy embrace, while hints of garlic and parmesan elevated each forkful to a new level of indulgence.
Pizza Extravaganza
The highlight of our visit was, undoubtedly, the pizza. We sampled an array of slices, each one a masterpiece of flavour and craftsmanship. The veal salami slice was a standout, featuring delicately sliced salami with a slight spice that perfectly complemented the rich, tangy tomato sauce. The gooey mozzarella added a creamy layer, while the crispy crust provided the perfect base. Each bite offered a delightful contrast of textures and flavours, making it extremely satisfying.
The arrabbiata pizza slice delivered a fiery kick, with its bold flavours enhanced by a robust tomato sauce infused with chilli and garlic. The spicy heat was beautifully tempered by the creamy mozzarella, which melted into the crispy, perfectly baked crust, creating a harmonious balance of heat and creaminess that lingered delightfully on the palate.
The primavera pizza slice was a delightful contrast, showcasing the freshness of seasonal vegetables atop a bed of molten cheese. Each bite was a celebration of colour and texture, the vegetables maintaining their crunch while blending harmoniously with the other ingredients. The gustosa pizza was a true indulgence, its luxurious toppings creating a symphony of flavours that danced on our tongues.
A Proud History
After we enjoyed our delicious array of pizzas, Outlet Manager, Mariana, shared the fascinating history of SPONTINI, dating back to 1953 in Milan, where a small family-run business began offering pizza by the slice. This simple yet brilliant idea quickly caught on, making their pizza famous for its distinctive texture – a soft, airy top with a perfectly crispy base. Their secret lies in their unwavering dedication to using high-quality ingredients sourced from Italy, including their special mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and fine flour. This commitment to excellence ensures that their pizza remains a favourite, even among Italians who are connoisseurs of their national dish.
Ambience And Service
Throughout our meal, the atmosphere at Pizzeria SPONTINI was lively and inviting. The warm, rustic decor, combined with the friendly and attentive service, made for a relaxed dining experience. Each dish was presented with care, reflecting the passion and dedication of the kitchen team.
Sweet Finale
To round off our meal, we savoured the tiramisu. This classic Italian dessert was executed to perfection, with layers of coffeesoaked sponge and mascarpone cheese melting together in a harmonious blend. The dusting of cocoa added a final touch of elegance, leaving us with a lingering sweetness that perfectly concluded our culinary journey.
In summary, Pizzeria SPONTINI offers a relaxed setting with comfort food that brings the authentic taste of Italy to your table. With its roots still firmly planted in Milan, SPONTINI provides a genuine Italian experience. Situated on a bustling street in The Pearl, the restaurant's outdoor seating area is perfect for peoplewatching amidst plenty of footfall. The inviting ambience, combined with expertly crafted dishes and friendly service, ensures a memorable meal that will have you coming back time and time again. ✤

A FUSION OF CULTURES ON YOUR PLATE
AMS
As we entered Silk Road, at DoubleTree Hilton
Al Sadd, we were met by a spacious, open dining area with beautiful arches reminiscent of traditional architecture. The calming palette of blue and white added to the serene yet sophisticated atmosphere. Lush greenery complemented the neutral stone walls, creating a fresh and inviting space.
Anna, our hostess and the Marketing Director of the hotel, greeted us with a radiant smile. She passionately explained how the restaurant's new team had been meticulously assembled, bringing together some of the most talented individuals in the region. The chef, who had recently won prestigious awards from Qatar Culinary Professionals for his culinary excellence, was particularly highlighted.
Anna kindly provided us with the evening's menu, sharing insights into the inspiration behind each dish and the team's dedication to authenticity and creativity. She elaborated that the concept of Silk Road is inspired by the diverse cuisines that were once found along the historic trade route, offering a unique culinary journey through time and cultures.
A Refreshing Introduction
The cold mezze platter arrived promptly, a vibrant medley of colours and textures. The hummus was a creamy delight, its smooth texture enhanced by a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of paprika. Muhammara, with its rich, nutty flavour and hint of
pomegranate molasses, offered a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. The moutabel, smoky and velvety, was a testament to the beauty of simplicity in Middle Eastern cuisine.
Salad Symphony
Next, the salads brought a burst of freshness. The tabbouleh was a symphony of parsley, mint and bulgur, each bite bursting with lemony zest and the crunch of fresh vegetables. The fattoush, with its crisp pieces of pita and tangy sumac dressing, was a delightful contrast, adding a satisfying crunch and a citrusy kick to our meal.
A Warm Embrace
The hot mezze selections soon followed, each dish a warm embrace of tastes. The batata harra, spiced potatoes sautéed to perfection, were a comforting bite, their heat balanced by a hint of coriander. However, the standout was undoubtedly the shrimp Provençal. Cooked in a fragrant garlic and herb sauce, the seafood was succulent and tender, each bite melting in the mouth. The rich, buttery sauce, infused with the freshness of parsley and a hint of lemon, elevated the dish to new heights, transporting us straight to the Mediterranean coast. This dish was a testament to the chef's ability to transform simple ingredients into a sublime culinary experience, making it a memorable highlight. Sagar, our waiter, was an exceptionally friendly and welcoming presence throughout our evening. He was never more than a few steps away from our table, always ready to top up our water or
clear away dishes with a warm smile. It was Sagar who told us all about the buffet dining that was also taking place, taking the time to show us all the dishes inside the cloches. His attentiveness and genuine hospitality made us feel truly cared for.
Main Course Marvels
The main courses were the evening's pièce de résistance. The mixed grill platter, a carnivore's dream, featured perfectly grilled kebabs, juicy and charred, each bite infused with aromatic spices that lingered on the palate. The lamb biryani was a fragrant delight, with tender lamb pieces nestled in saffron-infused basmati rice, each grain perfectly cooked and bursting with flavour, complemented by the subtle heat of spices and the sweetness of caramelised onions. The butter chicken, rich and creamy, was a comforting hug in a bowl, its sauce a harmonious blend of tomatoes, butter and aromatic spices, with tender chunks of chicken that melted in the mouth.
The highlight of the main courses was the Mansaf, Chef Mohammed's signature dish. The lamb, slow cooked to perfection, was incredibly tender, falling off the bone with the slightest touch. It was served on a bed of creamy, saffron-infused rice, topped with a tangy yoghurt sauce and garnished with pine nuts and fresh herbs. This dish, a true testament to Chef Mohammed's Jordanian heritage and culinary expertise, was a spectacular addition to our meal.
Sweet Finale
The meal concluded with Um Ali, a traditional dessert that was a revelation in every bite. This warm, milky bread pudding, studded with nuts and raisins, was a comforting, sweet ending to our culinary journey. The subtle hints of cardamom and rose water added an
exotic touch, leaving us with a lingering sense of satisfaction. The talented team at Silk Road truly outdid themselves, delivering an array of spectacular dishes that showcased their culinary prowess. Each plate was a testament to the exceptional quality and creativity that defined their cuisine. The convenience of the restaurant being part of the hotel added to its appeal, offering valet parking and access to all the hotel's other facilities. You can pick up a cake for a special occasion or relax in the lobby café, making it a perfect choice for convenient city centre dining. Silk Road promises an unforgettable dining experience, perfect for anyone seeking an evening out in the heart of the city. ✤

A PAN-ASIAN ODYSSEY
SD satisfies her Asian cravings with a culinary trip in the heart of Doha.
It's a Tuesday night and we're craving some Asian, but we just can't narrow it down (a common dilemma, we're sure). So, we decide to hit up the pan-Asian eatery, The Asian Kitchen at InterContinental Doha The City. We head up to the second floor, it's been a while since we last dined here. We are pleasantly surprised with The Square's swanky new upgrade. From what was a very casual diner to a stylish, sophisticated and more upscale restaurant, The Square's transformation is noteworthy.
The Square has four mini venues, and tonight we are dining at The Asian Kitchen or TAK. The interiors are sleek with rose gold sections on the wall partitions. Dark toned light fixtures with metal casings hang from above the dining tables adding a luxurious feel. An open kitchen dominates the space (in a good way) and makes it clear that this venue is all about the food. Perfect, because we're famished!
The menu features a full page of Southeast Asian classics on one side and a drinks menu on the other. Bubble tea lovers will appreciate the dedicated section with options such as Thai Milky Tea and Matcha Green Tea.
A delightful touch is the presence of little flags next to every dish, making its origins known to the reader. So, we're definitely going on a little trip around the region.
We start off with a passionfruit iced tea while the chef greets us. We go with his recommendations - beginning with a selection of his best-selling salads. The Crispy Duck Salad from China grabs our attention and we're rather impressed with the freshness of the dish. We'd generally expect a bit of a gamey taste when there's so much duck, but this has been through a 48-hour fermentation process. The chilli plum dressing further enhances the flavours. We try the Yam Neua Yang, or the traditional Thai Beef Salad, next, and admire how the chef has pulled everything together. The dish has fresh lychee, adding a light and subtle sweetness, with some crunch from the cucumbers and bell peppers.
The Tom Yum Goong soup features our favourite lemongrass and spicy prawns. This soup is warm and comforting and we now realise that when in doubt, nothing satisfies more than a delicious bowl of Thai soup. We eye a Vietnamese Pho on the menu and it's very tempting, but we haven't even dusted the surface yet, so we'll keep this one for our next visit.
TAK have sushi nights every Monday and their best sellers include the Dragon Roll which the chef kindly prepares specially for us. A platter of maki rolls sits beautifully with so many colourful options and after tasting all, we understand why the Dragon Roll is the most popular. It’s got the right hit of umami, crunch and everything you'd want in an indulgent helping of sushi.
On to the mains, and we start with a delicious Sweet and Sour Chicken, followed by a bowl of Massaman Curry with Rice.
The chef informs us that even though Mi Goreng is Indonesian, he's prepared a Japanese style Mi Goreng for us today with sweet and salty notes. We're satisfied with everything so far. The Pad Thai that follows is authentic and a Kung Pao Chicken cuts all that sweetness with a touch of spice.
We've really taken a long train through flavour town and from sweet and salty to spicy and sour, we've pretty much covered all the stops. We sip on some of that delicious passion fruit iced tea
as we take a digestion break and prepare for the last leg of our pan-Asian adventure – dessert.
The Korean Bingsu is the clear winner – and we proudly smirk with our excellent choice of dessert as two smoking bowls arrive. Mango chunks are generously distributed over shaved ice and coconut flakes and this is easily our favourite. The Chocolate Bingsu is richer with brownie bites over shaved ice and the combination of both is winning.
The service is attentive, and that attention extends to the meticulousness with which the food is prepared and presented as well.
For an excellent midweek dinner or a lively evening out at the weekend, TAK is a top choice. ✤

A VOYAGE OF SPANISH GASTRONOMY
Emille Loyola-Artigas visited The Cellar, the authentic Spanish haven at the Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha, where the essence of Spain’s culinary traditions is captured on a fascinating expedition through its charming regions.
Arriving at The Cellar, we were warmly welcomed by our host, Polina, who showed us options in various seating areas. Once inside, it was easy to appreciate how the restaurant vivaciously keeps its solid place on the Doha dining scene. Adorned with intriguing ornaments, the cosy interiors boast dark wooden tables, accent walls and the main bar looks through the open kitchen. The seating areas are thoughtfully placed and warm lighting gives an ambiance that is truly entrancing and serene.
We took our seats by the window and within moments Sakhila, our waiter, served up some warm grilled bread with freshly roasted garlic and tomato salsa, which was light and simple yet flavourful, different from the salsa I have tasted before.
Polina expertly described the menu with enthusiasm, and we chose some dishes from the Tapas selection to start. A tantalising fusion of inventive combinations and traditional flavours arrived at our table. We opted for Patatas Bravas to start, as our experience could not be complete without Spain’s most popular tapa made of crispy fried potatoes tossed with bravas sauce. Originating from Madrid, it’s the sauce that gives this dish the delicious slightly spicy, smoky flavour.
Our expedition then took us to the region of Galicia, for our next tapa dish, Pulpo a la Gallega, or Galician-style octopus, an enticing dish made of boiled octopus and potatoes, garnished with a heavy drizzle of olive oil, salt and paprika. The Cellar’s version is mixed with creamy and rich octopus mayonnaise. These unique yet uncomplicated toppings brought abundant flavour to the dish and this immediately hit my favourites’ list.
Of course, I had to try my all-time favorite tapa, Gambas Al Ajlio or garlic shrimp, a popular dish often found in the Andalusia region and the capital, Madrid. Shrimps intricately cloaked in garlic-infused olive oil with smoky hints of paprika and just the right touch of sweetness from fortified grape. They certainly surpassed my expectations.
Chef Ivan, the driving force behind the menu and the restaurant brand, spoke to us about the concept of each dish and his passion for Spanish cooking and traditions. He urged us to sample beef cheek, a dish that was part of a Guest Spanish Chef menu and which he plans to include in an upcoming food festival, and we thoroughly enjoyed its rich, smoked and beefy flavour with savoury sauce.
We had reached the main courses and, with steak in mind, we went for the ribeye, Filete Chuletón a la Parrilla, cooked mediumrare. Cut thinly, the striking presentation was so captivating that I wanted to indulge straight away. Every bite delivered a rich, robust, buttery flavour and wonderfully juicy tender texture.
The Paella de Marisco was a personal favourite! Undeniably the best I have tasted so far (and I have tasted a lot!). Said to have originated in the region of Valencia, paella is the most popular Spanish speciality but not easy to master, especially the juiciness of the rice and the seafood. The visual appearance was stunning with a combination of perfectly sized squid, prawns, mussels, rice and vegetables. The taste was heavenly as it was so lusciously moist and the blend of flavours from the saffron rice, peppers and tomatoes infused with a delicate smoky aroma was simply magical.
We were more than full by this point but could not resist the desserts. We chose the Tarta de Santiago, or Galician almond cake, one of Spain’s most iconic cakes, served with raspberry sorbet. Loaded with almond flavour, balanced with lemon zest, not too sweet, it was exactly the dessert I desired. But the best taste to complete the evening was Tarta de Queso con Aguacate y Mie – unbaked avocado and honey cheesecake. Delightfully served in blocks, the smooth creamy texture of avocado forms a stiff custardy base mixed with cheese and topped with honey. It is definitely a taste that will stay in my memory for a long time. The Cellar has been an icon of Doha’s restaurant scene for longer than many others, and it’s no wonder it continues to pride itself on being the destination synonymous with crafting authentic and delicious Spanish dishes. Even with its formidable and consistent reputation, The Cellar keeps evolving and there’s always something enticing and exciting to look forward to. I cannot wait to experience more – we have made our reservation for next week. ✤

CHEF OF THE YEAR
Frank Ponce – La Mar Doha –InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa
Whether travelling for business or pleasure, Liz O’Reilly discovered that Pullman Doha
covered.
My first impression of Pullman Doha West Bay was of the sheer size of the place. The lobby is expansive, its pale marble tiled floors increasingly the sense of space, and the accommodations are even more impressive.
We arrived as the hotel played host to registration for a major national sporting event and the atmosphere was buzzing. But even with so many people coming and going, the staff were welcoming and efficient and my check in was quick and easy.
I was soon on my way to the 30th floor and my Executive Suite and I think I can honestly say, I have rarely stayed in such generously proportioned accommodation. The large, comfortable living area housed a full lounge suite as well as a good-sized dining table and TV, plus mini bar and facilities for making tea and coffee – all without feeling in the least crowded. Pale walls and light wood panelling enhanced the feeling of space while thick carpeting underfoot gave the impression of luxury and the amazing view from expansive windows was mesmerising.
Just inside the door, a guest washroom meant visitors did not have to enter the bedroom which was separated from the living area by generously sized wardrobes – complete with iron and ironing board, safe and hairdryer and a separate area for luggage storage.
The bedroom itself was, once again, huge with a wellplaced desk to work at, a large TV and, of course, a super comfortable king-size bed. Special mention must go to the pillows, oh the pillows. Sink-in soft, yet at the same time supportive, they put me in mind of resting on clouds and sent me shopping for similar at the end of my stay. I was impressed to see a series of fun sign cards on the desk offering the use of a Pilates ring, free weights and more –each with mini-workout instructions on the back. You simply call the gym and they will bring you your chosen piece of equipment if you opt to workout in your room – a really great idea if you don’t have time to get to the fitness centre. I particularly loved the bathroom with its deep tub and walk-in rain shower. The provision of refillable toiletries from C.O. Bigelow, the oldest apothecary in America, was another luxurious touch, of which I took full advantage. And a box bearing a range of travel essentials such as cotton buds, a shower cap and a toothbrush, each in sustainable packaging, illustrated the amount of thought that’s gone into making guests feel comfortable.
On the 31st floor, I encountered the Executive Lounge – open to those in certain room categories – a cosy, yet sophisticated space offering tea, coffee, drinks and snacks available throughout the day. And then it was back down to Avenue, the all-day dining restaurant on the ground floor, for a very welcome lunch.
After several hours of travelling, the bright, airy space with its plum and light green seating was both comforting and refreshing and I was soon tucking into a plate of braised chicken in spinach sauce with fresh, crunchy steamed
veggies. The chicken was tender and moist and the sauce rich and moreish – so, I went back for seconds.
A range of other choices was available, from baked fish and beef stroganoff to salads and a tempting dessert counter but, mindful of an afternoon’s activity ahead, I decided the chicken was plenty for me.
From Avenue I set out to explore the hotel, starting at the top with the Penthouse Suites – four suites over the highest floors that are both spacious, at up to 350sq/m, and luxurious. Pullman Penthouses offer Stunning views, expansive master bedrooms with en-suite Jacuzzi, and a vibrant coloured Majlis for up to 13 guests. With two master bedrooms, a studio room and two bathrooms as well as vast dressing areas, fully equipped kitchens and living and dining areas, these indulgent suites really are something special. Back downstairs, I discovered the meeting rooms, from the standard business spaces with all the latest in audio and visual tech to the Al Thuraya Ballroom with its stunning Swarovski crystal ceiling ornaments and mashrabiya screens giving a nod to local heritage.
On the third floor, I made a pitstop at Echo Pool Café which sits beside the gorgeous outdoor pool where families socialised in the sunshine and children played. The space feels protected as if in a canyon amongst the high-rise buildings of West Bay and I came back later to sample the Jacuzzi with an iced lemon water from the bar as the sun set – for sure the perfect way to round off the first day of a business trip. One thing to mention is that I noticed a lifeguard on duty throughout my many return trips during my stay, always a good sign that the hotel is taking its guests’ safety seriously. The neighbouring gyms, both male and female, again boast floor-to-ceiling windows giving users a bird's eye view of the pool. And there’s a variety of top-of-the-range equipment, including Technogym, Concept2 and Kinesis One, ideal for those who don’t want travel to interrupt their fitness routine. Close by, the Pullman Spa, which has separate areas for men and ladies, offers impressive wellness experiences with treatments from premium brand Sothys, a Moroccan Hamam and the beauty boudoir. Cream walls and pale wood invoke a sense of calm and relaxation, while the reflective tiles in the sauna and wet areas were sparkling clean and inviting.
On my second day, I headed to BiCE, the hotel’s Italian restaurant for both breakfast and lunch. My morning meal was deliciously creamy scrambled eggs topped with cold cuts and fragrant fresh bread. And at lunchtime, I was eager to try the Italian menu, going for Marluzzo al Cartoccio con Frutti di Mare. A mouthful indeed, but my excruciating Italian pronunciation was worth it when a paper-cooked, or papilotte, parcel of black cod, resplendent with a very generous topping of seafood, all in a delightful tomato-based sauce with a head of baked garlic on the side, arrived at my table. The cod was perfection, flaky and moist, while the seafood was superbly tasty, the different flavours and textures melding together in an oceanic symphony. And I’m a sucker for roasted garlic, so that went down an absolute treat, it’s pungency perfectly complementing the subtlety of the seafood.
Later, I ventured to The Junction, the lobby café for a light evening bite of refreshing Caesar Salad – a portion so large it could easily have satisfied two people – and was impressed by the creamy tanginess of the dressing amply coating the crisp salad.
On leaving The Junction, I spotted the Artist Playground by Pullman, a vibrant corner of the lobby where a mini gallery displays works from photography to paintings. Eye-catching and fun, it’s a great space to spend some time and there’s the promise that the display will be different each time you come.
All too soon it was time to bid farewell to Pullman Doha West Bay, leaving behind those amazing pillows and the pool café, which had become my de facto base. But I look forward to a return visit. This really is a hotel that’s great for business or pleasure and ideally situated in the heart of everything. ✤

HIGHLIGHTING DESIGN AND
The latest Atelier collection from COS is a study in refinement alongside exceptional tailoring.
The London-based brand is known for its commitment to craftsmanship and contemporary tailoring and this latest collection demonstrates both in a series of versatile pieces that are distinguished by fine fabrics and impeccable attention to detail.
Ruched seams and internal corsetry form sculpted silhouettes and, reinvented for the season, day-to-evening pieces and elevated modular essentials feature signature details and finishes, from functional grosgrain hanger loops to adjustable waists. Refined suit jackets feature inward folding lapels, while elongated sleeve lengths in shirting explore new opportunities for wearing the pieces your way.
The summer palette balances soft, neutral tones with bold red and vibrant acid-yellow, complementing varying surface textures and transparent details. Through meticulous material selection, each garment illustrates COS’ unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, highlighting the brand’s devotion to quality and longevity.
A hand-pleated technique using bespoke paper moulds, forms a pair of wide-leg trousers and a coordinating scarf – with handpainted edges creating depth and movement. Artfully crinkled fabrics enhance modern set dressing; an ethereal yarn made from paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council creates soft knitwear, while lightweight leather jackets, ballet flats and loafers are perforated with precision using a laser-cut technique. Drawing inspiration from the 1990s, womenswear embraces elongated silhouettes; dramatic maxi-length skirts and an elegant fishtail dress with a structured hem take centre stage. Menswear echoes the fluidity of the womenswear collection,
championing relaxed cuts through loose-fitting overcoats and refined silk shirts. Completing each look, COS introduces sunglasses to its Atelier offering for the first time alongside elevated leather goods, unisex jewellery, broaches and belt clips, which form a contemporary yet timeless aesthetic. LIFE IN THE FAST LANE
We quizzed lawyer, film producer, talent manager and all-round busy guy, Waleed Maisery, to find out what he’s currently working on and learn the secret of balancing several successful careers – a hint, it’s not just coffee.
You’re Yemeni-British, with much of your creative work being in London, what’s the Qatar connection and what brought you to the country?
I am indeed. Born in Aden and moved to London when I was eight due to the civil war that happened in 1994. What made me come here [to Qatar] was totally unrelated to the creative industry but rather securing a legal position in one of the biggest energy companies in the world. I was previously working in Yemen from 2008 to 2013 and when the security situation got worse, I decided to make a choice to leave till things got better. Eleven years later, and I am still here!
You have been a lawyer for 15 years, how did you go from this to film production? Are you still working as a lawyer and, if yes, how do you find the time for your multiple roles?
It's actually just over 16 years and writing that down on paper makes me feel old. I still work as a senior legal counsel and will probably do so for a while. My early retirement plan before getting to 40 may just have to be extended. The interest in the film industry actually came from me watching the film Boiling Point on a flight. That film kept my attention from start to finish, which made me curious to know who produced it. I sat and watched all the credits and actually reached out to the team and congratulated them on such an amazing film.
The question of time is a great one and if anyone knows me well enough, they will say that I am always doing a thousand
things at once. Not sure if it's ADHD or the inability to sit back and do nothing. I truly believe that time (and health) are the most precious things in this world which cannot be bought or compensated for. We are all living on this earth for a limited time only and I want to make the most of mine. I always used to say I will sleep enough once I’m dead.
Your film Gassed Up took the Best Audience Award at the prestigious London Film Festival. How did you become involved with this project and what does the role of producer entail?
My involvement in Gassed Up was not planned. As I mentioned earlier, the same producers for Boiling Point were producing Gassed Up. We had remained in touch after my initial contact and the opportunity was given to me to be an executive producer. A few weeks earlier, I had invested in an old friend of mine in his music career and became his independent label as well as his manager. So, when I read the treatment for Gassed Up and saw the cast and crew attached, I couldn't say no. Plus my gut felt that this would open up doors in the entertainment industry and allow for other opportunities in both the music and film industry. Producing I would say is trying to make the impossible possible. Nothing ever goes to plan on a set and that's exactly how I got Kier his first acting role on the film Gassed Up. We needed a rap artist for a battle scene on the day of the shoot otherwise we would have had to delay it. I
got him in an uber, sent him photos of the actors he would be battling and he literally wrote his bars in the taxi on his way to the set.
You currently have several other projects in various stages of production – what can you tell us about those?
I'll try to summarise each one in a few sentences without giving away too much.
Edgware Road – A feature film about gentrification where the local people fight against a system that wants them out. We are currently at the end of pre-production and we have everything set and ready to start filming. Script, locations, filming schedule, crew attached including actors and the final step needed now is full financing.
Naz – This is a biopic feature of the boxing legend Prince Naseem and is currently at the stage of attaching a director to the film. The script is complete.
Hiddaya – Based on the true story of an Imam who was addicted to opiods without even knowing till he ran out of his medicine. It's a story of faith and how he manages to get his life back together by going to the most extreme measures. The Ride – A short film about three Yemeni boys on a mission to watch a football match but who get side tracked with one disappointment after another.
What’s been your favourite thing to work on so far and why?
That’s a hard question. Not sure I can actually choose one thing only. Producing music videos and trying new things like AI was an experience and fun at the same time. Attending major events with my MCs really takes me out of my comfort
zone and has actually been somewhat refreshing. As a film producer, I would say Edgware Road, only because I have been involved on this project from day one and seeing how much we have accomplished and how far we’ve come only pushes me more. The more challenging the better!
As well as law and film production, you also engage in artist management. How do you juggle all your different roles to ensure everything gets your full attention?
Lots of coffee! I think people always say that time is short but if you actually manage to have a system in place, you can do a lot in 24 hours. I work on all my projects throughout the day juggling from one thing to the next without even realising. I have most of my meetings while driving and even during a haircut. There is no real excuse and time is plenty if managed right. I have however sacrificed my health a little and that’s something I am aware of and trying to fix. Hiring a PA is definitely something I am considering.
And, on a more personal note, what do you do in your spare time, if you ever get any?
Spare Time? I don’t even know what that is! When time permits, and travelling isn't an option, I try to fit in spa days from time to time as that helps me reset and start the next day fresh. Although film production and managing artists take up most of my spare time, I still manage to do other things. I am actually writing a book about my life which I intend to release and then turn into a limited series one day. Other than that, I really enjoy spending time with the family and my two girls. ✤
“BIG SCREEN Fallout Ripley
Need to Know:
Fallout is an American futuristic drama series based on the highly successful role-playing video game franchise created by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky. Set in a postapocalyptic Los Angeles after a horrendous nuclear event, some citizens now live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants, bandits and whatever else now roams the surface above.
Creators: Graham Wagner, Geneva Robertson-Dworet Cast: Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Xelia Mendes-Jones
Why Is It Worth Watching?
The creators of the highly appreciated TV show Westworld are working together once again to present the ingenious story of the sprawling video game franchise – Fallout. The series opens in 1950s’ America, at the height of the cold war and other events. But before you know it, the story fast-forwards and places viewers in the aftermath of an apocalyptic nuclear war far into the future. In this present-day, many survivors take refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults, which are retro-futuristic societies that came about as a result of major resource wars.
In Vault 33, a young woman named Lucy (Ella Purnell) is set to marry a resident of Vault 32. But her big day is completely ruined when the wedding party is brutally raided by surface dwellers led by a woman called Moldaver. Things get worse, when she finds her father Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan) has been kidnapped by the invaders. Desperate for answers, Lucy (who has spent her whole life in the safety of the Vaults) decides to venture out into the dangerously unforgiving wasteland of Los Angeles and find her father with only the name Moldaver as a clue.
Shot entirely in black and white, this shrewd and violent slow-burn is impressively elevated by Scott’s stunning performance.”

ON THE RECORD
ROCK
All Born Screaming
By St. Vincent
Annie Clark – better known as the shapeshifting triple-Grammy winning artrock experimentalist St. Vincent – finds herself stepping away from alter egos and getting personal as she digs deeper searching for her own sonic vocabulary on the self-produced seventh studio album, All Born Screaming
Consistently defying expectations and never known to run the same play twice, St. Vincent’s vocals and guitar playing (she is regularly listed among the top guitarists of the 21st century by multiple publications) are at their most expressive and distorted best throughout on what’s her heaviest sounding record yet.
On opener Hell Is Near and follow up Reckless, both sound raw and essential with sections that smoothly show off ethereally sparse and then decadently lavish production.
Her vocals are bold, self-assured but with a restless urgency on the sleazy and groove-heavy Broken Man and Flea, that sound effectually weighty thanks to Dave Grohl pummelling the drums on both tracks.
It’s hard not to imagine Violent Times scoring the background of an upcoming Bond movie with its orchestral grandness. While the dazed apocalyptic ballad The Power’s Out (a personal favourite) sounds like a spiritual successor to Bowie’s stunningly incandescent Five Years
ROCK
Can We Please Have Fun
By Kings Of Leon
Kings of Leon are back and most definitely having fun again! Its discernibly heard all over their ninth studio album fittingly titled Can We Please Have Fun Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, the Followill brothers (cousin Matt included) have been on the rock scene for over two decades. Helping breathe new life on their latest showing is pop-leaning producer Kid Harpoon, a frequent collaborator with Harry Styles, Florence & The Machine and others.
Wind chimes ring softly in the distance on opener Ballerina Radio ; it's accompanied with synths and a propulsive bassline laid down by nifty bassist Jared. This smoothly transitions into next track – Rainbow Ball, where frontman Caleb sounds his ‘honey over gravel’ best while singing “only good vibrations at the rainbow ball, sweet vibration!” on the chorus.
On the groovy bop Nowhere to Run the entire band sound great over a bouncy funk bassline. They then switch gears into their classic garagerock finest for Mustang
The mellow country-tinged Ease Me
On oozes a tranquil and joyous feeling. While the outstanding closer Seen evokes feelings reminiscent to the end credits rolling post a really good movie.
ORAL HISTORY
When The Sea Came Alive
By Garrett M. GraffWith the 80th anniversary of D-Day coming up, it seems a particularly poignant moment to highlight the latest release from the New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist which offers the most complete account of D-Day – the largest seaborne invasion in history.
The surprise landing of over 150,000 Allied troops on Normandy’s beaches on the morning of June 6, 1944, turned the tide of history in WWII and this book explores the full impact of this world-changing event. When the Sea Came Alive captures a human drama like no other and pays a fitting tribute to the men and women of the ‘Greatest Generation’.
MYSTERY THRILLER
Middle Of The Night
By Riley SagerAnother New York Times bestselling author, but this time it’s a thriller. The action, aptly, takes place in Hemlock Circle – now there’s a name to conjure spooky goings on – the former home of main character, Ethan Marsh, whose childhood best friend, Billy, disappeared during a back garden sleepover 30 years ago. On his reluctant return decades later, insomniac Ethan begins to notice strange things happening in the night and signs of Billy’s presence. What We’re (Still) Talking About
Playing Chicken
As we go to press, a battle is raging in India’s courts over who invented the muchloved dish Butter Chicken. The dish’s history is not in doubt, it came to India from Pakistan via Partition. According to the BBC: “A man named Mokha Singh ran a restaurant in the city of Peshawar (now in Pakistan). After partition, Singh moved to Delhi, founding a restaurant with three employees he'd worked with in Peshawar: Kundan Lal Gujral, Kundan Lal Gujral's cousin Kundan Lal Jaggi and Thakur Das Mago. It was here, that they started serving a dish first thrown together
at their restaurant in Peshawar – one created by adding a tomato-based gravy, dollops of butter and spices common in Pakistan to leftover tandoori chicken.” So far, so good. But fast forward to the present day and the descendants of Gurjal and Jaggi, each of whom are restaurateurs and each claim their forefather was the original inventor. The disagreement has become so bitter that the rivals have taken it to court. Seems a bit mad to us but then, have you ever asked a Middle Easterner where hummus comes from?
Putting The Fun In F1
Monégasque Charles Leclerc had a very good Monaco Grand Prix chalking up his first ever win on home turf and garnering plenty of praise for keeping Max Verstappen well away from the podium – a result that delighted lots of F1 fans who had become weary of the Belgian-Dutchman’s somewhat boring track domination. However, Leclerc wasn’t just in winning form on the track, he and others were showing an admirable sense of humour. In the days leading up to the big race, Australian McLaren driver Oscar Piastri
mentioned that he too would like to be a citizen of the small French principality, prompting Leclerc to offer adoption which led to multiple jokes about their one-two podium placing ‘keeping it in the family’ – not to mention Oscar’s mum, Nicole, offering to adopt RB driver Yuki Tsunoda since she seemingly has a son vacancy.
If that wasn’t enough, the Ferrari team, including Principal Fred Vasseur, having managed a double podium with Carlos Sainz coming in third, decided to celebrate by diving into Monte Carlo Harbour. Now, that’s what we call fun!
Where’s Wally?
Now, we’ve heard it all. So, we all know emotional support animals are a thing, right? But we bet you’re thinking something cuddly like a dog, cat or rabbit – though we have heard of an emotional support cow and a chicken (though they’re generally not actually real animals).
But, Joie Henney, of Pennsylvania, USA, is the proud owner of an emotional support alligator – Wally, who even has a TikTok account with 143,000 followers – or at least he was. Mr Henney was visiting his holiday home in Georgia
when Wally went missing from his pen outside the property.
It seems pranksters grabbed Wally and authorities, unaware of his registered emotional support animal status, called a trapper who captured the tame reptile and released him into a remote swamp near others of his kind.
Now Joie is desperate to learn the location in the hope of being reunited with the animal who he says has helped alleviate his depression for the last 10 years.
All he wants to know is where’s Wally?
