“
“Always have a willing hand to help someone, you might be the only one that does.” ―- Roy T. Bennett,
I
can hardly believe that it’s already time for Ramadan. May will mark the start of the Holy Month when Muslims all over the world observe fast from surise to sunset. As I try and get ready for my own Ramadan journey with changing my sleeping pattern, eating consciously and general mental prep for the 30 days of fasting, I’m learning more and more that this special time is one of celebration, reflection and, most of all, sharing and giving. With that said, I’m constantly appreciative for calling the Gulf home, where Ramadan is the most spiritual and beautiful occasion of coming together with family, friends and neighbours to be thankful for all the great things we have in life. And if you keep up with me on instagram, you’ll see that food is absolutely on top of my list of things to be grateful for, so isn’t it a coincidence that some of the best dining experiences, whether at home or in a restaurant, are served up in Ramadan. The delicious spread at the end of the day is really the most humbling part for someone who fasts - and a feast for all the senses for those who are joining in the festivities for a taste of what it’s all about. Turn to p23 and check out Ramadan 101, our extensive round up of Doha’s top tents, iftars, and sohours to check out from mid-May onwards. Tag us (@factmagazine) on instagram when you’re posting from any of the gorgeous offerings - we’d love to see where our recommendations have taken you! Last month, we held the ceremony for the 4th annual FACT Dining Awards Doha at the stunning Secret Garden in Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl Doha. Over 65 winners were announced in what was a lively affair attended by the who’s who of the hospitality and food and beverage industry. A full list of the winners and pictures from the event can be found starting p47 - did your favourites walk away with a plaque? Though I’ll do my best to behave with bad eating habits before (and during) Ramadan, I can’t promise that I won’t be on the hunt for the best Kunafa in town. If you think you’ve found it, just holler. Wishing all of our readers who are celebrating, Ramadan Kareem. See you next month to talk Eid escapes, World Cup and more...☺

OXYGEN RICH RESTAURANT Forget shisha and cigarettes, there’s a new healthier way of relaxing after a great meal; combining restaurant with Oxygen Bar, and bringing this to life for diners. HIGH STRESS AND THE every day grind as well as pollution; traffic and even the dust can leave you feeling sluggish and worn out. To combat this, a unique idea of offering something different and new in Doha’s F&B scene has opened its doors. Qavanna bistro with its Oxygen Bar is a healthy and memorable green oasis where you can take a break while eating Croatian food or sipping natural tea during their After Work sweet retreat happy hour. Food on the menu is best described as Mediterranean/Adriatic cuisine that is strictly controlled by famous Croatian Master Chef Andrei Barbieri. Food is completely homemade; even mayonnaise is made in house. Olive oils used are the highest of quality as is the meat, fish and other ingredients. Healthy is often mistaken for diet and in Qavanna they are showing us that this is not necessarily the case, food can still be tasty and amazing yet healthy at the same time. This is why an Oxygen Bar fits in perfectly with the whole concept but to explain the idea in more detail, let’s take a journey back to where it all started. Early reference to the recreational use of oxygen is found in Jules Verne’s 1870 novel Around the Moon: “… and I know more than one state in old Europe which ought to put itself under the regime of oxygen for the sake of its health!” Modelled after the “air stations” in polluted downtown Tokyo and Beijing, the first official oxygen bar (the O2 Spa Bar) opened in 18
fact magazine
Toronto, Canada, in 1996. The trend continued in North America and by the late 1990s bars were in use in New York, California, Florida, Las Vegas and the Rocky Mountain region. Customers in these bars breathe oxygen through a plastic hose. Followers claim that this practice is not only safe, but enhances health and well-being, including strengthening the immune system, enhancing concentration, reducing stress, increasing energy and alertness, lessening the effects of hangovers, headaches, and sinus problems, and generally relaxing the body. It has also been alleged to help with altitude sickness. It’s important to highlight that in Qavanna, no medical statements are proclaimed as concentration of the O2 is low and it is not in any way a medical treatment but purely entertainment. Definitely healthier than smoking after lunch or coffee, our team tried it and loved it. Excited to have this new F&B outlet in Doha, we are sure Qavanna will become your new serene place where absolutely everyone can find something for themselves with a rich menu and unique additional offers. ✤

BEAUTY AND BUSTLE IN BAKU
MODERN ARCHITECTURE, OLD CITY WALLS AND THE WARMEST PEOPLE ARE WHAT YOU’LL FIND IN AZERBAIJAN’S CAPITAL, BAKU. FACT CHECKS INTO THE CITY’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER ADDRESS, THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL BAKU TO EXPLORE A DESTINATION THAT STILL REMAINS LITTLE-VISITED BUT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON EVERY TRAVELLER’S BUCKET LIST…
fact magazine

F
or GCC residents, Baku is an east-meets-west destination that offers the best of both worlds. Its historical core firmly keeps a foothold in the orient whilst its beautifully refreshing promenades and sky-high Flame Towers take one step towards picturesque European life. With a visa on arrival for Gulf nationals, and a brand new ASAN e-visa system for citizens of 81 countries, including the UK, Australia, and US (making it quick to apply and receive a visa via email), visitors can now take full advantage of a place that blends cosmopolitan living with old-world charm. As with every trip we embark on for the first time, location is key to getting the most out of your break. And so, the Beaux-Arts style luxury hotel that we chose was everything – and more – than what we’d hoped for (and seen online). Enter, Four Seasons Hotel Baku…
ALL THE CHARACTER
There’s a reason why we love the Four Seasons as a hospitality brand. They go above and beyond to embrace the essence of every destination in which they open a hotel. Here, there couldn’t be a more picture-perfect property to showcase the distinct sides to Baku. Its exterior is classic, reminiscent of luxury neighbourhoods in cities like London and Paris, with a white-washed stone front that quickly adds a palatial elegance to the façade. Inside, we’re greeted by marble everything with sophisticated flower arrangements, cosy sofas, and stylish chandeliers – and that’s just the lobby. We’re soon 66
fact magazine
taking note of the décor because it’s every interior maven’s dream, and all the things that we’d want in our own home. The feeling is one of being in a large living room with all your friends from all over the world gathered in one place, for the staff and guests that we came across had at the very least a friendly smile to share, if not, great conversation about Baku and their visit. If the hotel’s goal is to make your surroundings comfortable on a homely level, they’re doing things just right!
PREMIER LIVING
You have to pinch yourself when the hotel room you’re staying in is bigger than your entire apartment. Not only is the Premier Room a huge space, it has THREE balconies; one looking directly into the Old City, the second with an instagram-worthy shot of the famous Flame Towers and the third boasting far-reaching views of the promenade along the shores of the Caspian Sea. Yes, it was hard to tear ourselves away to go out and explore the city every morning when seeing all its different sides from our room was a beautiful cultural experience in itself. With the option of either a king-sized or twin beds, our accommodation is filled with light. It’s airy, neutral tones and indulgent décor reminds us that Four Seasons is truly a tasteful brand. The beds can only be described as what we imagine it would be like to sleep on a fluffy cloud, and the ottoman-style furniture means there’s a place to do everything.
Large arm chaired seating is perfect to sink into after a day of walking, the work desk with executive leather office chair is a laid-back space to catch up on emails without compromising on relaxation, and the huge bedside table means that aside from the very large walk-in closet, you’ve also got plenty of room to store things in the bedroom. The highlight of the room, however, had to be the mind-blowing bathroom which extends to reveal a set up that wouldn’t go out of place in a 5-star spa. We’re talking one very BIG marble bathroom that includes double vanities; mirror embedded television, a deep soaking tub, separate rain shower room and a separate toilet with bidet. When you’re ready for full-on luxury downtime, slip into a sumptuous terry cloth bathrobe and enjoy the high-speed internet access for multiple devices, fully stocked private bar, in-room movies on the 42-inch LCD television with a Blu-ray player, iHome for your iPod and iPhone, and a room service menu of the most delicious food. Do you even need to leave?
ELEGANT EVERYTHING
It’s often the case when you stay at a hotel that at least one area is in need of improvement or attention. Not here. Down we go to Zafferano, the signature all-day dining restaurant, which is named from the Italian word for “saffron,” the spice that grows abundantly in Azerbaijan. The Italian-themed menu highlights delicacies from Central Italy (we find that Italian cuisine has a stronghold in the city’s food scene). fact magazine

• GLOBETROTTER
In warmer weather, the restaurant opens to an outdoor terrace at the edge of the new Philharmonic Park. What convinces us almost immediately about the restaurant is our first foray down to breakfast. Having just ordered our beverages, a gentlemen on the table next to us bids good morning and proceeds to say “this is the best hotel breakfast in Baku” and with lots of nodding and smiles, we get up to explore. Think pastries galore, an Azeri breakfast station, eggs cooked to order, healthy juices, an extensive cereal counter, hot foods like sausages, sautéed mushrooms, beans and more, plus all the beverages you need for a wake up call or morning boost. The hotel’s version of the local egg with tomatoes breakfast main is definitely worth a try – you might even go for seconds like us! On our last day, we enjoy a leisurely breakfast followed by a quick nap and then a visit to what I can only describe as the most sophisticated spa of any city hotel we’ve every visited. It’s the only spa in Baku with a view of the sea and for that alone it’s worth a visit. The luxurious Jaleh Spa and Health club has treatments dedicated to advanced skin care and body therapies with ancient traditions of Turkey and Persia. There are nine relaxing treatment rooms as well as the sensual bathing retreats known as hammams. Separate changing rooms for men and women offer showers, saunas, steam rooms, ice fountains and heated loungers. The indoor pool is unlike anything we’ve seen before and it takes we can’t stop taking pictures of it – though no phone screen can do this grand space justice. Most of all, it was the small touches by the staff who replenished our water and offered complimentary tea and dry fruits and nuts as relaxation snacks, regardless of not having a treatment booked – and this is just some of the finer benefits you get to experience as an hotel guest.
SEND ME YOUR LOCATION
You’ll be that annoying person on your insta and Facebook feeds who spams everyone with all their checkins because the Four Seasons Hotel Baku is the most ideally-located hotel you’ll find. It’s just seconds from the Old City where trinket treasures, local vendors, quaint homes, and the most incredible authentic Azeri food await (highly recommend lunch at Tandir – a small tavern with the best Azeri bread, ever). This means that souvenir shopping is right on your doorstep. On the other side, you can cross the road and tackle the stairs up to the Flame Towers and Marty’s Lane where the best views of the entire city will give you real hashtag travel goals. Turn left out of the hotel and cross over to the promenade or keep going until you reach the bustling Nizami Street where a more modern approach to shopping, cafés and monuments is evident. Also, just across the road is the stunning Carpet Museum. 68

We’d recommend taking a food break at the Cookshop Baku where our request for a non-menu item (the local kuku – eggs with herbs) was fulfilled by a friendly waiter and a happy chef! In simple terms – we couldn’t have picked a better hotel as the base for our very first trip to this mesmerising city! There are very few traits left of the country’s soviet past, bar the odd old-school car – which actually adds a sense of nostalgia and realness to the place. Azerbaijan makes most of its money from oil and gas, though grains, grapes, cotton and livestock are also a good contribution to its economy. You will learn more about the country’s many different revenue streams as well as its familyoriented culture just by talking to locals around the city. They are a gracious people – men carry a gallant attitude, holding doors open and addressing passers-by politely, whilst the women will stop to have conversations about everything from your outfit to your beauty regime and, as we encountered, to offer you fresh baked local desserts straight out of their grocery bags. As Baku is in the early stages of becoming a tourist hotspot, we found that the local people welcomed us with genuine intrigue and an eagerness to learn and share stories. With a cup of Azeri black tea soaking in the lemon slice flavours, which is served at every seated spot, we happily obliged and made new friends and memories of our own! ✤

After having stayed in hundreds of hotels, it takes a lot to make us feel at our most comfortable. Especially when it comes to city hotels, creating that balance of comfort with convenience is a task that can be difficult. However, we found just the place that manages to tick both of these boxes… and so many more. Walking into the City Centre Rotana Doha we find a beautiful lobby that, at the time of our visit, had an influx of international sports teams checking in for tournaments in Doha. Well, if it’s good enough for them – it’ll do us just fine! Check in is fast and efficient, and we whizz up to our King Premium Room to find a very large, neutrally decorated room that has sun light pouring in through its floor to ceiling windows and pretty much every amenity you could ask for from a 5-star hotel – we’re off to a good start!
LET’S TALK PREMIUM It’s clear to see the upscale surroundings of City Centre Rotana Doha in every essence of the property. The elegant 381 guest rooms, suites and apartments are spread over 47 floors, all offering snapchat-worthy views of either the stunning Arabian Gulf sea and/or the city skyline. A fresh palette of colours reveals a room that immediately calls to our relaxation needs. It’s the perfect blend of creams, subtle beige and browns, and perfectly placed lamps for mood lighting which accompany the airy vibe. fact magazine

Each 50sqm premium room offers picturesque views of the city. You’ll find all your usual amenities like a well-stocked mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, and Wireless Internet connection. On top this, a stateof-the-art, multi-channel 42” LCD television, bedside guest digital assistants, bathrobes and hairdryer, iron and ironing board and plenty of fresh towels will add to making you stay as comfortable as possible. Distinct design features include a recessed closet system that conceals shelving, drawers, mini bar, and personal in-room safe – we like the practicality of the design, which leaves the guest with more space to enjoy. The bathrooms were also a practical solution with good space and amenities to make sure your warm soak or hot shower is the best it can be! During our stay, we went to check out the 24th floor Club Rotana Lounge, which offers everything from welcome drinks upon check-in, elcome amenities in the room, complimentary breakfast served in the comfort of the lounge or at Olive Oil - All Day Dining, complimentary afternoon tea, complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the day, evening canapés and more, to anyone staying in Club Rotana category accommodation. If you want that added touch of luxury and convenience – this is definitely a good choice!
DINING DELIGHTS City Centre Rotana Doha offers a feast of culinary options in a variety of exquisite settings. Each restaurant shines with its own character and cuisine, and all are defined by signature bespoke service. Firstly, breakfast is a lovely affair of hot and cold dishes to satisfy your morning cravings and make sure that you get off to a great start! The hotel’s newest restaurant; Zeituna Lebanese Restaurant, is an oriental celebration of cuisine. Think delicious authentic flavours with mouthwatering ingredients and instagram-ready dishes, providing guests with a unique Lebanese dining experience. The venue is designed to represent a relaxed atmosphere where guests are offered an exceptional choice of mezze, delicacies, beverages and desserts. It is distinguished by its refined service, elegant decoration and the live music you can enjoy while dining along with a great choice of shisha flavours. Our favourite dishes, and ones we’d highly recommend include: Sawda Djej (pan-fried chicken liver with pomegranate and lemon sauce), Fish Sayadia (aked fish with spiced rice & caramelized onions, topped with nuts and served with tahina sauce) and the Halawat El Jiben Mouchallaleh (sweet cheese dough, pistachios topped with Ashta cream and rose petal jam). fact magazine
77
The restaurant represents an amalgamation of regional dishes, serving lunch and diner with recipes inspired by Lebanon and the Arab region. If you’re looking for that taste of homely comfort cuisine, here’s where you’ll find it! On the other hand, there’s the ever-pleasing Teatro with its Eastern Cooking Meets Western Cuisine – there’s a sushi bar as well as a comprehensive à la carte menu creatively blending dishes from Chinese, Indian, Italian, Japanese and Thai cuisines. The award-winning Boston’s Bar & Restaurant is every sports bar-lovers dream with a variety of sumptuous dishes off a delicious American style-menu to relax and unwind. A lobby-level gourmet coffee shop and two poolside dining options round up City Centre Rotana’s excellent food offerings – there’s a good chance that you won’t need to leave the premises for any meals.
RECREATION REVELRY Surprisingly, we ended up spending a lot of time at Bodylines Fitness & Wellness Club. Their fully-equipped gymnasium, cardiovascular and weight training, steam, sauna, and jacuzzi are the cherry on top of the cake when it comes to staycation choices. If you don’t want to compromise on your fitness and wellbeing throughout the stay, you don’t have to! This place offers it all; personal trainers and fitness instructors are at hand to guide you through workout, temperature controlled outdoor swimming pool and kids’ pool (sun bathing is amazing here!), and a spa that offers an array of time-tested massages and treatments. In fact, the deep tissue massage we opted for was complete bliss as the therapist used the best techniques to work out our knots and decrease stress levels – which meant that we had a wonderful night’s sleep. In a nutshell, the hotel has enough to please both the children and the big kids of the family!
STAYCATION GOALS City Centre Rotana’s location in the heart of Doha keeps it connected to City Centre Mall and mere steps from the new Doha Exhibition and Conference Centre. The hotel is nestled in the key business and commercial district of West Bay and just 30 minutes’ drive from the new Hamad International Airport. This makes it a great choice for both leisure travellers looking for downtime, and a business traveller in need of a relaxing place to stay that has all the mod cons required. For couples or families in Doha who wish to get away from home life for a few nights and let someone else take care of them, City Centre Rotana Doha’s big, spacious rooms, yummy dining options and recreation facilities will keep every guest occupied throughout their stay. Final verdict: we will be back! ✤ 78

FERRARI
KEEPS IT FIERCE There are sports cars and then there’s the Ferrari 488 Spider.
A
s avid car enthusiasts and seasoned test drivers, the FACT team have the privilege of spending quality time behind some of the finest wheels on offer. Every once and a while however, we get to experience something truly magnificent, something a cut above the rest. Although our intentions are not to instil jealousy into the hearts’ of our readers, the following statement may achieve just that. This month, we experienced the Ferrari 488 Spider and it was even better than we could have imagined. The Ferrari 488 Spider marks a return to the classic Ferrari model and she looks fantastic! It would be a daunting challenge for any sports car manufacturer to produce such a flawless work of automobile art. It is obvious the exterior design is completely performance orientated, with highly efficient aerodynamics that still manage to retain the pure lines synonymous with the Ferrari brand. The sculptural flanks are key to its character with the large signature air intake scallop divided into two sections by a splitter, paying homage to the original 308 GTS. A dual grille opening characterises the front of the vehicle which directs air into the two radiators. A double front spoiler is also present for aerodynamic reasons. The bonnet itself has a pronounced, raised central section and two side channels. These channels have two functions. The first is to make the car’s appearance sportier in nature and the second is to direct air from the two hidden vents in the bumper. A blown spoiler dominates the rear of the vehicle, along with the large air vents present to further improve aerodynamics. The new exhaust tailpipes add to the sense of power and performance exuded from this masterful creation. All in all, it would be extremely difficult to build a better looking vehicle. Carefully sliding into the cockpit styled interior, one immediately feels as if they are on the starting grid at a Formula One event. This motor vehicle offers nothing less than the perfect balance of style, quality, functionality and sportiness. The entire layout is driver oriented, ensuring every function of the vehicle is easily at hand and ready to be implemented. A new Sport infotainment system ensures the simple navigation of available features. Only the very finest of materials and craftsmanship can be seen 80

in this sports car. After careful inspection we could not find one feature we would have altered or added. In truth, several articles could be written on the interior of this vehicle alone, but there is no substitute for the real experience. The performance of this car was however the most impressive aspect of all. Our first drive entailed a trip around Qatar. This long and wide highway stretches for miles and we took advantage of the space to put her through her paces. The all-new 3902 cc V8 turbo engine is a scary beast. There is far too much power available to test on any road and we were hesitant to push her to even half of her capabilities. This speed machine goes from 0 – 100km/h in just three seconds and has a top speed of 330km/h! Fortunately, the carbon ceramic brakes are more than up to the task and the impeccable grip on offer ensures one is in control of the experience. Our next excursion was around The Pearl. Considered one of the finest locations in Doha, it was the perfect location to test the Spider’s handling abilities. If we were to provide one word to describe the experience, it would have to be, smooth. Every curve and feature of this car has been designed to ensure a perfect ride. This Ferrari is incredibly responsive and carves through the roads like a slalom skier carves through the snow. She feels light, powerful and capable. It was only once we exited the vehicle that we realised our cheeks ached from the permanent ear-to-ear smile this experience had provided. This car screams success and wealth. If you are someone looking for the ultimate sports car experience, you need not look any further than the Ferrari 488 Spider. ✤

Dirty Computer
By Janelle Monae
A scintillating amalgamation of synthladen soul, rubbery funk and sugary R&B, Janelle Monae is a true musical treasure. Adding a distinct festive Southern bounce to the music scene, Monae has successfully secured her position as a true icon in music, fashion and film. Her fourth album and first “emotion picture”, Dirty Computer is an artistic progression we have been so excited to witness. Deep, personal and straight from the heart, the album sheds light on Monae’s story like never before. Evoking the style and flair of Kiss, Make Me Feel might be the strongest Prince tribute we’ve heard since his death. Packing a ton of 1980s nostalgia, the liberated jam carries a feeling of raw sensual energy all throughout the song. With personal liberation as the key theme of the album, it is all about the celebration of one’s self as well as strength and unity. A diss record aimed at haters, Django Jane is a bold step away from her previous work. The perfect balance of grace and reverence, Dirty Computer is definitely one of our favourite records of the year! 86

Playing with different styles of production of delivery, James Bay offers a new and improved sound while still sticking close to his roots. We can hardly wait for what’s next!

he Torch Doha is situated in the Aspire Zone which may as well be code for the capital city of health and fitness or sport central. Visiting athletes of numerous disciplines fly to Doha to use the world-class facilities and many of them stay in The Torch. It should be little wonder then, that the food on offer at this 5-star venue is health conscious in everything it serves across all its outlets. The Englishman in me had images of scones, jam and clotted cream but that is not quite the idea they were going for. The Torch Tea Garden has the feel of a tropical paradise in the Far East or South East Asia and the menu had a decent selection of choices to accompany the excellent list of teas they served in this tranquil indoor space. There were as many savoury items as there were sweet treats to choose from. We started with the beetroot carpaccio with some arugula, feta cheese and olives. The balsamic and lemongrass dressing gave it a tangy and delicious quality that makes this a very tasty and popular option. The quinoa cakes go down a treat – something very unique that pleases our palates with every bite. Similarly, the prawn tempura was lovely and crisp whilst the bruschetta board was a camera-worthy surprise. There are delicious and healthy sandwiches and burgers to choose from which are balanced and not calorie high or saturated in relishes, sauces and fatty chemicals. The ‘Boss’ burger comprised good quality beef, sautéed onions, a little herb mayonnaise, lettuce, sun dried tomato and blue cheese. The signature burger was just as impressive, if not more so, with Angus and chorizo patty stuffed with cheese, avocado, a tomato jam and onion rings. We could get used to eating one of these for lunch every day! The desserts are delicious but not excessively rich. The signature chocolate fudge is an absolute must. I’d go so far as to say that you must go for this even if you try nothing else. It’s a cool chocolate cake served with hot chocolate sauce that provides contrasting temperatures melting the middle of the cake and a salted caramel ice cream sits just on the side blending perfectly with the spongy texture of the cake. Their kunafa was a little drier than I’d have 104 fact magazine

expected but it was really the only area I could fault the food – maybe I’ll ask for extra syrup on the next visit! The teas to choose from are varied and wide-ranging. They include an exclusive selection of Japanese and Chinese tea, oolong tea and white tea. We tried the white needle tea and it accompanied our food choices beautifully. Their mocktails and smoothies were also very good. It was obvious that their berry delight was freshly made from fruit on the premises and we finished it with gusto. The views from this indoor garden, 20 floors up the tallest tower in Qatar, give you an excellent vantage point of various landmarks like the Khalifa stadium, Hamad Aquatic Centre and Aspire Park with its vast greenery. It’s a whole different part of the city and the perfect instagrammable hangout. When I’m craving a good burger or need to impress visitors and friends with a special treat – this will be the number one foodie spot. ✤

CULINARY TRIP TO TURKEY

aking place every Tuesday, the Turkish Night is a delicious one. If I’m honest, my gut was telling me that this might not be the greatest Turkish food. I say that because I have a theory about restaurants that try to be good at lots of things, surely they can’t be master of all, right? Well, I went with an open mind and just as well because my theory was quickly proved wrong and the food was very impressive. The restaurant itself is very large to cater for the mass dining of morning breakfast or the flagship brunch. We chose to sit outside while the temperature is still bearable in the evening and greatly enjoyed the chilled vibe with tranquil water features in the background adding to the relaxed feel. Staff were highly attentive and friendly too keeping the table cleared so we could come back with freshly filled plates. The fresh salads were plentiful and filled one buffet counter. The Turkish doner kebab was notable for its juicy flavour and we had been craving it all day – so all the tastebuds were satisfied! The chef was very keen to point out that this is not a shawarma! The shawarma is a much drier affair but this was softer with sauce and Turkish accompaniments like yoghurt. DIVINE! The cheese borek was definitely a hit. It’s a particularly Turkish food stapke made with filo pastry and a thin flaky dough. It’s layered with spinach and feta cheese and tastes just like the traditional pockets of delight we’ve had on our many visits to Turkey. The restaurant has nailed it. The lamb wrapped in aubergine was also a stand out success – succulent and light yet packed with flavours. I also gorged on their fine selection of barbecued meat; lamb, chicken and beef all beautifully done. 108 fact magazine
The sweets counter was enormous and seemed to go on forever! For those who perhaps peculiarly lack a sweet tooth like me, all is not lost, because the selection of Turkish cheeses to choose from was almost equally as large and you don’t often get to tuck in to so many different specialist cheeses so I thoroughly enjoyed trying out those. There was shaklish, comlek, tulum, and feta as I recall and more besides them to get your cheese fix. This is a family-friendly restaurant and it encourages people to eat together and try new things. There were quite a few families there when we arrived early on and they were made to feel extremely welcome by the staff. Plus, how could they not be happy when the food is THIS GOOD? ✤

ore and more people are telling me that they’re embracing quality time in the many stunning hotels and resorts here in Qatar rather than shelling out a fortune for expensive air fares for all the family to somewhere fairly expensive in Asia, Africa or elsewhere. Qatar offers a 98 per cent no-rain guarantee, food from across the globe and truly 5-star service. The Intercontinental Doha manages to encapsulate all of that and proves that point in spades. I spent a ‘wellness’ day there and started with a worthy workout in the gym. The surrounding corridors, locker room and changing facilities looked fresh, clean and recently renovated. The gym covered a vast expanse and boasts an enormous range of equipment both in terms of machines and weights. I had zero trouble managing to mount a bike or jump on a free treadmill. It looks out over the pool letting in bright sunlight in an airy and ventilated workout space. Looking out at the pool inspired me to cool off after a full-blown workout. Viewed from the air, the pool is basically a giant V-shape with a cool bridge across the middle that leads residents directly to the beach. I tried swimming from one end of the V shape to the other but was distracted part way by a bar in the pool replete with built in stools so I could hydrate with a freshly pressed orange juice or naturally-made smoothie without even leaving the pool. 112 fact magazine

Kids love this pool and their parents do too because the kids have far too much fun to keep them amused but they’re in close proximity and parents can just lie back on the loungers knowing they are never too far away. A lifeguard is on duty, the staff are vigilant and the fresh open air breathes life into their young souls. There is even a play area for the little ones too. After the pool, you only have to walk a few steps to be on the private beach that only Intercontinental residents have access too. It’s in a prime spot. Look to your left and you can see the majesty of the Pearl, look to your right and there is the splendour of the skyline. Adventurous types can rent jet skis and get stuck into water sports. I preferred to lie back in the sea and bask in the sunshine. After working up an appetite, I only walked a few steps and found myself in Coral, the main all-day dining outlet that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. It particularly impressed me that the lunch was healthy and fresh with a tremendous breadth of salads, fruit and enticing hot dishes on the buffet like a Greek souvlaki, Indian curry and English roast beef. The restaurant is large but it has a grand dining terrace that faces onto the pool area meaning you can keep an eye on the kids, and or your sun lounger, without venturing too far away. The Bay Club which is the name for the health and gym facilities offer a great many classes from boxing to yoga, crossfit to weight
training and spinning too. I did a one-hour indoor cycling class with my instructor, Tarek, and got an immense endorphins rush, feeling all the better for it. The new wing of the hotel is now home to the incredible spa. It occupies an enormous space and is an oasis of serenity and quiet calm. I tried out their 90-minute signature massage with the exceptionally professional and highly-skilled masseur, Yestini. It was a unique deep pressure massage combining therapeutic techniques including the signature golf ball instrument which presses into the sore spots in muscles and leaves you feeling totally de-stressed. Though ideal for athletes, the spa therapists can alter the level of pressure to suit the client. I was highly stressed in the back and shoulder areas but it was all ironed out by the time I left. I subsequently relaxed in the wet area, followed by tea in the relaxation lounge followed by the use of their steam room, Jacuzzi and sauna which I basically had to myself. The whole day was truly 5-star and I didn’t have to go far or pay a fortune for it. Just the ticket you need! ✤

DOHA INSIDER
John S Louie General Manager, Doha Marriott Hotel Tell us three things about the Doha Marriott Hotel that make it stand out from its competitors... The three things are my incredible team, the history of the hotel and our location. The Doha Marriott Hotel is a very unique property, having originally opened in 1972 as the Gulf Hotel, it was the first international 5-star hotel in Doha. We still have many associates that have been working in this hotel for more than 20 years and a few that have over 30 years of service. It is incredible to see the loyalty of the team to the hotel and to Marriott as a brand. Having worked for so many years in the hospitality industry, they have perfected the art of hosting brilliantly. I can confidently say that Doha Marriott associates are among the friendliest and most talented hosts in Qatar. We are very lucky to have such a unique location. Just seven minutes from Hamad International airport, we are at the gateway to Doha with Souq Waqif, the Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Arts, West Bay and many commercial areas just around the corner. Our hotel not only appeals to business travellers but also to families, who can enjoy our recreation area such as the swimming pool, private beach, tennis courts for their weekend staycations. 114 fact magazine
What are some of your favourite cultural hotspots in Doha and why? I have been in and out of Qatar for almost 20 years, having first arrived in 1999. At that time, the main attractions were the old Souq, the Mall and the Centre for shopping, Al Bidda Park, the Corniche, a few local restaurants and only four international hotels. It has been fantastic to see Qatar develop so fast in such a short period of time. As every hotelier, my hours tend to be quite irregular and so it is hard to plan ahead, but this also gives us the opportunity to do a lot of “spur of the moment” activities, especially with my family and the many close friends we have here in Doha. I would say that my favourite cultural places are the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Cultural Village and Souq Waqif, for these unique places leave me inspired, motivated and ready to start a week with positive energy. Additionally, for me a simple morning stroll on the Corniche is a perfect way to walk through Qatar’s cultural heritage and have a glance at its bright future ahead.
For the rest of 2018, what are your most important professional goals to achieve with the Doha Marriott Hotel? We are constantly working on improving our services and offerings for our guests but 2018 will be very special for our hotel, our spa and our restaurants. Our spa team is working on bringing in new exciting treatments and products as well as improving our beach, swimming pool and gym facilities. When it comes to restaurants, they all have an impeccable reputation and we have won many local and international awards including the 2018 FACT Awards for the best Indian restaurant with Taj Rasoi. However, we do understand that in order to continue our legacy we need to keep introducing new promotions and exciting collaborations. At the moment we are working on an exciting new project that will be introduced just after Ramadan and it will be a new outlet in our beach area. My team and I will share more details with you later and I promise it will definitely become the new go-to place to have a memorable weekend in Doha but ssshh… so far it is a secret and my PR team would probably not be happy to know if I share it with you already!
