A Beautiful Game Indeed

It’s finally here. Twelve years in the making, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 gets underway this month with much fanfare. It’s the first time the tournament has been held in winter and also a first for the Arab world. So, not surprisingly, Qatar is going all out in terms not only of the sporting element but also with the huge amount of entertainment running alongside.

To be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed trying to work out what’s happening where but thanks to our cover story, I’m now well versed in the best places to catch all the matches and some pretty fab appearances by international celeb entertainers too.

The footie theme carries on in our dining section with a review of Shehrazad Lounge Bar & Terrace, which promises to be one of the hot spots for watching the matches. We also checked out the reopened Toshi and the delightful Twisted Olive and we’ve got a sneak peek at some of the eateries that are coming when Printemps Doha opens its doors this month.

Elsewhere, make sure you check out the Arts & Culture section to learn the story of the refugee who’s become a sought-after artist, it’s really touching and a true inspiration. And take a look at Motoring News for details of the sumptuous new all-electric Rolls-Royce.

There’s also the usual roundups from the worlds of fashion, gadgets, entertainment and more as well as plenty of happenings around the country in the Listen Up section.

We’ll be back with more footie news next month but, for now, let the games begin!

BOLLYWOOD CALLING

Film and drama enthusiasts, get ready! A musical based on Golden Globenominated film Monsoon Wedding is set to take the stage.

Amusical

production of the popular Indian comedy-drama will showcase at the Abdul Azizi Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif, Doha, from November 15 to 26. It comes as part of Qatar Creates’ cultural programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and is presented by Qatar Creates Events and Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture.

The musical is based on the movie of the same name by prolific filmmaker Mira Nair. Monsoon Wedding has continued to enchant global audiences since its release more than two decades ago. Featuring the powerful juxtaposition of tradition and modernity against the backdrop of a globalising India, it won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and garnered nominations for the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards, becoming one of the highest grossing foreign films of all time.

Commenting on the upcoming global premiere, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, the leading force behind Qatar Creates, says: “ Monsoon Wedding is a story that inspires debate about the nature of life, identity and our place within an ever-changing world. It will be a pleasure to

welcome director Mira Nair and the talented cast to Doha to inspire a sense of joy and unity among young and old as part of our Qatar Creates programme.”

Conceived by a top team of collaborators, the Monsoon Wedding musical features a stellar Indian cast that took five years to assemble. It’s supported by popular Indian musician Vishal Bhardwaj’s compositions, along with three hit songs from the film by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna. Orchestration will be led by Tony Award-winner, Jamshied Sharifi of The Band’s Visit fame.

Qatar Creates’ One Pass holders can access the musical as part of their benefits package. Launched as a gateway to arts and culture for all residents and visitors, the One Pass offers access to over 300 events and experiences, including art and cultural exhibitions, museums, live events, festivals, theatre and musicals, throughout November and December 2022. ✤

QATAR SET FOR HOTEL EXPLOSION

Qatar could see its hospitality market grow by 89% to over 56,000 hotel keys by 2025.

The figures are according to research carried out by global property consultancy firm, Knight Frank, with the delivery of the planned hotel room supply forecast to cost approximately USD7 billion.

Adam Stewart, the company’s Partner - Head of Qatar, said: “Officially, around 30,000 keys had been delivered by the end of 2021, and we estimate that another 3,800 keys will have been delivered by the time the World Cup commences.

“Looking beyond the World Cup, however, reveals some incredible ambitions. The tourism and hospitality sectors are expected to contribute 12% of GDP by 2030, making them worth about USD55 billion, by which time tourist arrivals are forecast to be closing in on 7 million.”

Faisal Durrani, Partner – Head of Middle East Research, Knight Frank, added: “While there is palpable excitement in Doha as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 draws near, for the country’s hospitality sector the best is yet to come. Indeed, with nearly 27,000 hotel keys expected to be delivered in the next three years, there will be a phenomenal change in Qatar’s hotel offering by the end of 2025. The near doubling in capacity to over 56,000 rooms will be in a post-World Cup environment and comes as the country prepares for an anticipated visitor influx following heightened interest in Qatar once the excitement of the World Cup subsides.

“Indeed, with new theme park attractions planned in Lusail such as the new Winter Wonderland and Aquatar on Qetaifan Island, which promises to deliver the world’s tallest waterslide, the seeds of a vibrant tourism and

hospitality market are starting to take shape.”

The research also revealed that a change in the peninsula's top hotel operators is expected by 2025, with IHG, for instance, dropping out of the top three by number of rooms under management.

Faisal Durrani explained: “The Marriott Group will continue to fortify its position as Qatar’s leading hotel operator, with about 8,800 rooms under management by 2025, up 152% on today. Accor and Hilton Hotels & Resorts will round off the top three, together controlling nearly 10,000 rooms, or a third of total hotel keys. The big change however will be in the form of IHG slipping to fourth place, with about 3,500 rooms, from second place today.”

International operators will also claim a larger market share by 2025 up to at least 62% compared with the current 59% and that is without the 17% of new rooms as yet unallocated to an operator.

Knight Frank’s analysis shows that 76% of planned rooms will be classed as either four or five stars, up from the current 69%, and only 14% will be graded at three star or lower. However, Faisal Durrani said this could lead to operators targeting budget travellers with options such as all inclusive.

SUSTAINABLE SPORT

Renowned artists from World Cup qualifying countries are to create designs for reusable water bottles as part of an initiative to reduce plastic waste.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 gets a sustainable angle as part of the myriad of activities bringing together culture, art and sport. Twenty-two talented Qatari and international artists from the countries qualifying for the tournament have been commissioned to create designs for reusable water bottles.

This initiative, which is spearheaded by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums (QM), showcases the significance of sports and the arts in Qatar and is a fine example of how the two can converge to encourage sustainable practices. The project falls in the domain of IN-Q Enterprises, the commercial arm of Qatar Museums, and comes under the umbrella of Qatar Creates, a yearround national cultural movement that curates, promotes and celebrates the diversity of cultural activities in Qatar.

HE Sheikha Al Mayassa said: “Having participated in beach clean-up efforts in Qatar for many years, I have witnessed first-hand the effect of pollution on our natural environment. For that reason, I am pleased that the global artistic community have joined us in advocating for a more sustainable future through the creation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 reusable water bottles. Whether they become a treasured memento or are refilled and reused regularly, my hope is that these art water bottles are a small reminder for us all to play our part to help create a greener world.”

Many of the designs take inspiration from the FIFA World Cup; Switzerland’s Urs Fischer’s design features an illustration of his iconic Lamp Bear sculpture, which is on view at Hamad International Airport, holding a football. Qatar’s Abdulaziz Yousef’s design depicts the Doha skyline foregrounded by a football player. The Art Water Bottles are available at FIFA Official Merchandise Outlets, Qatar Museums Gift Shops, the IN-Q website, Qatar Duty Free and Qatar Creates One Pass kiosks. In the lead-up to the tournament, Qatar Museums will also open 10 exhibitions across its institutions and gallery spaces. Currently, the nation is being transformed into a vast outdoor art museum, with more than 50 new major public artworks, including pieces by some of the world’s most celebrated artists, being installed throughout the country’s public spaces. ✤

AN ICON RETURNS

Qatar Museums has reopened the iconic Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), following a year-long facilities enhancement project and the reimagination and reinstallation of its permanent collection galleries.

On the occasion, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani – accompanied by numerous VIPs and dignitaries – also inaugurated Flag Plaza, a new community space initiated by the Years of Culture programme, an international cultural exchange that deepens understanding between nations and their people, first unveiled when Qatar won the bid to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Flag Plaza, located near the MIA Park, will serve as a community gathering space and a location for festivals, celebrations and other events for the people of Qatar.

“It is with immense pride that we reintroduce the Museum of Islamic Art, inviting the community to discover the reimagined museum and newcomers, including the many visitors who are coming to attend the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, to experience it for the first time. We look forward to the institution’s next chapter, which comes on the heels of Qatar Creates, a wide-ranging initiative which showcases and promotes the very best cultural experiences Qatar has to offer to help enhance the lives of all who reside in or visit the country. So many people came together to make today a reality, I thank them for their support and commitment to bringing our culture and history to the heart of our society,” said Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums. The reimagining of MIA’s collection galleries introduces a comprehensive visitor trail, creates expanded interpretive

materials to help contextualise the masterworks, and provides new mobile and child-friendly resources to make the museum more accessible for families and younger guests. The galleries are organised according to broad historical and cultural themes, periods and geography, and explore the great traditions of Islamic craftsmanship. MIA also introduces a new section on Islam in Southeast Asia with a focus on the connection between different cultures through exhibits on the trade of commodities and the exchange of ideas across the Islamic world and beyond. The enhanced and expanded experience eases visitor flow to serve a larger audience with a reframed entrance and upgraded cafés and retail locations. All improvements to the building are in keeping with the vision of the late I.M. Pei, the original architect. MIA once again collaborated with the French interior design and architecture firm first retained by I.M. Pei, Wilmotte & Associés, throughout the reinstallation process. MIA Director, Dr Julia Gonnella said: “I am honoured to lead this extraordinary institution into its next chapter. The extensive enhancement introduces an entirely new storyline that takes visitors on a comprehensive journey that provides a meaningful and enriching experience for children and families to explore the vast, rich history of the Islamic world through our unparalleled collection.” ✤

Take a poll about which new art installation is creating the most community buzz in Qatar, and chances are Flag Plaza on the Corniche will emerge with flying colours. Adjacent to the Museum of Islamic Art, Flag Plaza is a visually spectacular celebration of diversity, with 119 national flags proudly waving about a dozen or so metres into the Doha sky. From Germany to Guinea Bissau, the Philippines to Pakistan, Kuwait to Kyrgyzstan, Somalia to Switzerland, the flags represent all of the nations with diplomatic missions accredited by the State of Qatar. Over and above the high-flying icons, or right below them, to be precise, you’ll find infographic poster boards displaying interesting facts about the represented countries.

Experience Al Jazeera at Doha Fire Station shows the enormous growth of the state-owned Al Jazeera Media Network over the past 25 years, going from a single TV channel to a global media phenomenon. Alongside exploring its founding values, creative processes and technologies used, there will also be a number of interactive exhibits, including a studio experience and an immersive section making use of virtual and augmented reality. Other top spots to visit during your stay include the Museum of Islamic Art where you will be treated to a massive collection of Islamic art in various forms such as ceramics, books, and Arabic calligraphy.

Souq Waqif is also a must-see for any self-respecting tourist, here you will find souvenirs, handicrafts, spices and traditional garments. There is also an array of wonderful restaurants to choose from.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Al Zubarah, a former pearl fishing town that dates back to the 1700s is also worth seeing. You can visit the remains of this archaeological site, including the Al Zubarah Fort. Compared to the modern skylines of Doha, this famous attraction truly shows you a different side of the city. And, last but not least, you have to also visit the Al Thakira Mangroves . Many have fallen in love with the lush greenery that surrounds a lake, and the views of the desert on the horizon. If you want a truly unique experience, you can go kayaking through the belt. You may even spot certain birds like flamingos and herons!

PURE ESCAPISM

If you want a quick getaway during November, Virtuocity has a brand-new escape room experience called The Final Match that will take you just over an hour, keep you and your friends working as a team and provide a truckload of fun while you’re doing it.

I headed north on the Al Shamal highway searching for escapist adventure, and found it in spades at Virtuocity, Qatar’s Gaming Capital, located in Doha Festival City. I took along Mohanad and Saahil, combining what we hoped was the best of British, Lebanese and Indian intellect, in a quest to get out in time. Time would prove how clueless we actually were. Don’t know how escape rooms work? You and a group of friends (maximum seven) are locked inside a themed room, from which you must find a way out within 60 minutes.

The room is populated with myriad clues, which you are prompted to find through occasional interventions from your Big Brother-esque gamemaster via video screens. In our experience, a referee’s whistle gave shrill blasts whenever we needed cues and clues. The aim was to solve the sequential puzzles and secure the codes to open the main exit door and ‘escape’. We started our visit with a briefing session where host Marc mansplained how locks and code systems work. We then watched an orientation video and were asked to leave our phones in a secure safe before heading into the lion’s den. It’s a google-free zone where only teamwork will save you. During the live experience, our game-coach Ali was on hand to help out whenever brainpower and logic failed us, which was often. I’m

reluctant to reveal any game mechanics. Mystery is paramount. Suffice to say, you will find yourself unlocking clues in a locker room that evolves to something else. That’s all I’m giving you. You and your mates will need to work cohesively, communicate effectively and abandon your egos at the door. The clues are tough but not unsolvable. Work well, and you will get out. Take along a good mix of minds – you’ll be surprised who might shine in this environment. You don’t need to know any football facts. This is a game of lateral thinking and practical problem-solving. The Final Match escape room is the perfect football-related excursion, ideal for a fans’ night out, a corporate team-building exercise or a fun adventure for the entire family (from age seven upwards). Find it at the Enigma sector of Virtuocity, among their multiple escape room experiences. Virtuocity also hosts immersive experiences such as ‘virtual football’ where motion sensor boots and headsets take you onto a virtual pitch for six minutes of cyber soccer. They’ll also be screening all the big football matches in their massive multipurpose eSports Arena.

INTRODUCING THE GENESIS

Genesis reveal their intentions to challenge the top brands in the exclusive sedan segment with the G90.
G90

As the luxury vehicle division of South Korean vehicle manufacturer, Hyundai Motor Group, Genesis is fast becoming world-renowned for its premium offerings, having produced a range of deluxe models over the last two decades.

This month, FACT got the chance to thoroughly inspect and test drive Genesis’ flagship luxury sedan the G90, compliments of the team at Skyline Automotive, Qatar. Being our first Genesis experience, we were excited to discover what this prestigious label has to offer.

Exterior

Our first impression of the Genesis G90 was that it exudes an effortless sense of luxury and refinement, one that is said to offer the most elegant interpretation of the brand’s design identity. At the front end sits the newly designed Crest Grille, flanked by sleek, ultra-thin, Two-Line headlamps – the combination of which has been expertly crafted to resemble the brand’s winged emblem. The grille features a layered architecture design comprising of two G-Matrix patterns sitting on top of one another creating a three-dimensional effect.

The striking, Guilloché patterned emblem itself has a premium feel to it and sits like a jewel at the front and centre of the car’s clamshell bonnet. The bonnet design features a single panel that integrates it with the fenders – eliminating the panel gaps –creating a smooth and seamless effect.

The side view of the G90 reveals the Parabolic Line design that flows seamlessly from the bonnet, along the bottom of the windows to the boot. Adding to the exterior’s capacious and polished nature are Athletic Power Lines on the fenders around the wheels, that hint at the car’s on-road intentions.

The back end Two-Line combination lamps are elongated with the boot and help to give a strong and well-balanced image. The silver Genesis lettering emblem sits between the lamps and the boot, further accentuating the premium nature of this handsome sedan. Additionally, many of the vehicle’s functional elements, such as the licence plate, reverse lights and various sensors, have been lowered to ensure the clean look is complete.

Interior

Shifting our attention to the interior, we were welcomed by a beautifully constructed environment complete with uber-comfy

seating. The well-balanced nature of the interior design is sure to satisfy both those who wish to drive the G90, as well as those who desire to be chafferer driven.

We found every element of the 2023 model to radiate pure opulence and superior design quality, with premium materials being used throughout the vehicle. The two panoramic sunroofs can be controlled separately and illuminate the cabin with warm, natural light. Mood lamps installed on both the left and right of the sunroofs are amongst others located in the vehicle and add further to the sense of luxury. Top-of-the-line glass and aluminium materials have been used to create the unique centre console, where the electric dial-type Shift-By-Wire renders the G-Matrix patterns into real glass. This console features the brand’s Fingerprint Authentication System that enables users to setup and select their customised user profile, amongst other settings.

Additionally, the centre fascia, door trimmings and backs of the front seats feature Newspaper Crown and Stripe Wood garnishes. The elegant quilting designs of the rear seats, along with the forged carbon metal G-MATRIX patterns on the door trims made us feel like we were in a first-class, private aeroplane. Both the left and right seats in the back can be reclined separately, ensuring optimum comfort for each individual.

Further noteworthy internal features of the G90 include a Mood Curator, an Armrest Touch System, an on-board fragrance diffuser, an antimicrobial sanitation system, power-operated rear sunshades, active noise cancellation and almost unbelievably good massage functions.

Infotainment & Connectivity

A 12.3-inch infotainment display provides access to Genesis’ latest infotainment system, and features sat nav and SiriusXM satellite radio. A second 12.3-inch screen has been included to serve as a digital gauge display. Both displays feature crystal clear graphics and text and are user-friendly and super responsive. The G90’s infotainment system includes full smartphone connectivity with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Wireless phone charging and a head-up display are also fitted as standard. Two 10.2-inch electric rear-seat touch screen monitors with automatic angle adjustment are located on the back of the front seats and allow passengers to use media independently by connecting Bluetooth headsets to either the left or the right monitor. Also included in the G90 is an eight-inch touch screen located in the centre armrest in the back row of seating. This allows passengers to adjust rear comfort settings with ease. Genesis have also included a fantastic 3D-surround sound function that recreates audio characteristics of superior sound venues like ‘Boston Symphony Hall’ and delivers it through a Bang & Olufsen 23-speaker system. The result is an audio experience second to none.

Power & Performance

The Genesis G90 now houses a twin-turbocharged, V6 engine coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and

all-wheel-drive. The standard engine of our test drive model produces 374hp. We found this setup to be very responsive, with plenty of acceleration and power on offer.

The multi-chamber air suspension and braking systems helped us to maintain traction, to absorb the bumps, as well as to always keep full control of the powerful sedan. In fact, we found the 2023 G90 to be one of our most relaxing, comfortable and responsive driving experiences to date.

We must mention the Preview-Electronic Control Suspension (Preview-ECS). This system optimises control of the suspension using a camera at the front of the car along with data from the navigation system, to identify road conditions and to provide a smooth riding experience in any driving environment. A bump in the road will be detected 100 metres in advance, prompting the car to raise the front wheels by 10mm as well as to optimise the Preview-ECS system. This will reduce the shock of the contact and lessen the jolt on the passengers.

Safety & Assistance

Not surprisingly, the new G90 comes fully equipped with advanced driver assistance and safety technologies, including Hands on Detection (HOD) that accurately detects when the driver is holding the steering wheel and issues a warning when necessary – a first for any Genesis model.

Additional standard technologies include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control with lane-centring, forward collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, Highway Driving Assist and more.

Our Verdict

In truth, a day was far too little time for us to fully appreciate the vast array of high-end features that Genesis have included in their new G90. What we can say with absolute surety, however, is that the 2023 G90 is amongst the very finest of motor vehicles we have ever had the pleasure of experiencing in all our years of test driving. ✤

THE EPITOME OF ELECTRIC EXCLUSIVITY

In 1900, Rolls-Royce co-founder, Charles Rolls, prophesised an electric future for the motor car. This prophecy could not have been fulfilled without a more recent promise, when Rolls-Royce CEO, Torsten Müller-Ötvös, made a public commitment to bring a fully electric Rolls-Royce to market within the current decade. In September 2021, the marque confirmed that it had commenced testing of Spectre, the first Rolls-Royce to be conceived and engineered from the very beginning as an electric car.

On its completion in 2023, Spectre will represent a prophecy fulfilled, a promise kept, and an undertaking completed. Spectre is not only a historic moment for Rolls-Royce, but also a historic moment for electrification. To that end, Rolls-Royce has additionally confirmed that by the end of 2030 its entire product portfolio will be fully electric.

Rolls-Royce’s commitment to an all-electric powertrain will only enhance the Rolls-Royce experience – instant torque, silent running and the sense of one imperceptible gear.

With Spectre, Rolls-Royce has harnessed a revolutionary ‘Decentralised Intelligence’ system, allowing for the free and direct exchange of information between more than 1,000 vehicle functions. Its designers have captured a contemporary, yet timeless, aesthetic that significantly progresses the brand’s iconography as it embarks on its electric age. In unveiling Spectre, Rolls-Royce sets a new precedent in the creation of an entirely original class of motor cars, the Ultra-Luxury Electric Super Coupé.

From the front, Spectre’s split headlight treatment is intersected by the widest grille ever bestowed on a RollsRoyce. The relaxed angle and polished stainless-steel finish of

the grille enhances Spectre’s presence and unprecedented drag coefficient, which at just 0.25cd makes Spectre Rolls-Royce’s most aerodynamic motor car, ever.

In profile, the sharp, vertical bow line at the front of Spectre draws the eye rearward to its monolithic flanks. The lower line – known as the ‘waft line’ – borrows directly from yacht design. This ‘waft line’ is the visual representation of the Rolls-Royce ‘magic carpet ride’ and its upwards sweep toward the front is inspired by the gently lifting bow of an accelerating power boat.

Spectre is the first production two-door coupé to be equipped with 23-inch wheels in almost 100 years. Additionally, for the first time on a series production Rolls-Royce, Spectre is available with Starlight Doors, which incorporate 4,796 softly illuminated ‘stars’. The ethereal night-time theme continues with Spectre’s Illuminated Fascia, incorporating the Spectre nameplate surrounded by a cluster of over 5,500 stars.

Spectre is equipped with a completely redesigned digital architecture of luxury named SPIRIT, which manages the car’s functions and coordinates with the Whispers application, allowing clients to interact with their car remotely and receive live information.

Preliminary data shows that Spectre is expected to have an allelectric range of 320 miles/520 kilometres WLTP and offer 900Nm of torque from its 430kW powertrain. It is anticipated to achieve 0 - 60mph in 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds).

BRINGING THE MAGIC

This month, FACT magazine set its sights on the brand-new HUAWEI Mate Xs 2, the latest generation smartphone in the HUAWEI Mate Series.

HUAWEI’s brand-new flagship foldable smartphone has hit the market and is making serious waves with its novel design and high-performance capabilities.

Exterior Design

The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is a beautifully designed, compact, foldable smartphone that is ultra-flat, ultra-thin and ultra-light. It’s constructed from durable materials including glass fibres for the backplane along with aerospace-grade titanium alloys used in the screen structure. The phone’s Composite Screen comprises four layers which act as a shock barrier improving resistance to drops and impacts. Furthermore, it feels great in hand, and fits easily into a pocket or purse.

The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 showcases the industry’s first Doublerotating Falcon Wing Hinge design – a feature we found to be most impressive. This means the phone has an ultra-flat, foldable screen with no fold line running through the middle.

Hardware and Performance

When unfolded, the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 has a 7.8-inch TrueChrome Foldable Display with an 8:7.1 ratio. When folded, the screen measures 6.5 inches with a 19:9 display ratio. Additionally, it boasts a resolution of 2,480x2,200 and a pixel density of 424ppi. The Ultra HD True-Chroma Foldable Display provided an excellent visual experience with its clear text and refined images. The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz along with a touch sampling rate of 240Hz, providing the smartphone with a far faster screen response and an overall smoother display. We were able to effortlessly stream movies without any stalling or decrease in the resolution. Thanks to the fact it’s also an HDR screen that reproduces 1.07 billion colours, the quality of the movies was outstanding.

Functionality

A fantastic feature of the new HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is its split-screen

function, that enables both interaction and collaboration between different applications. It also allows for the use of two applications in parallel. This means we were, for example, able to construct emails whilst reading product reviews. We could also chat on a videocall and read social media comments at the same time. Swipe Gesture meant we were able to easily access and control the floating windows. This practical approach allows for silky-smooth and efficient operations that save both time and energy.

Camera

Another outstanding quality of the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is the True-Chrome Camera System. This setup consists of a 50MP True-Chroma Camera, a 13MP Ultra-Wide-Angle Camera and an 8MP Telephoto Camera. Featuring improved HUAWEI XD Optics, with brand-new information recovery technology, photo clarity has been improved by 10%.

The HUAWEI XD Fusion Pro True-Chroma Image Engine, coupled with the 10-channel Multi-Spectrum Sensor and colour calibration with more than 2,000 colours, meant we were able to capture accurate and truly vibrant images.

Battery

The excellent standby battery life of the HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is due to its high capacity 4,600mAh battery. Additionally, this battery supports 66W HUAWEI SuperCharge, which means we were able to charge the smartphone from flat to 90% in just half an hour.

Our Verdict

The HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 has surpassed previous generations in all areas of appearance and performance, and now offers a truly unique, smooth, responsive and rewarding user experience. In fact, HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 is our pick for best smartphone currently on the market. ✤

LEVELLING IT UP

FACT got its hands on vivo’s new high-performance, colour changing V25 Pro, a smartphone with enhanced photography features that encourages artistic expression.

vivo have just unveiled their latest smartphone offering, the vivo V25 Pro, which we wasted no time in trying out.

We all know it’s what’s on the inside that counts and the vivo V25 Pro provides a solid performance along with high-power efficiency that supports the daily needs of the smartphone’s users.

The new V25 Pro is equipped with an octa-core CPU, MediaTek Dimensity 1300 with 12GB RAM and 8GB extended RAM that power its 5G capabilities.

This setup also delivers greater AI imaging capacity that allows for the capture of outstanding 4K videos along with a smooth gaming experience. We found movie watching and game playing to be polished and uninterrupted. Performance is vastly improved thanks to the new Bionic Cooling System. Design wise the new model is pretty to look at. The slim body is just 8.62mm thick and features an elegant 3D Curved Screen with a punch hole at the top of the front camera. Our favourite design feature is the revolutionary Colour Changing Fluorite AG Glass enabling the rear panel to display various vivid hues, at different angles, when exposed to UV light. The V25 Pro comes in Surfing Blue and Starlight Black. The Surfing Blue edition, for example, changes from light sky blue to a deep ocean blue, depending on the angle it’s held at in the sunlight.

The Pro delivers an excellent imaging experience with its 64MP OIS ultra-sensing rear camera that features upgraded OIS and EIS capabilities, along with an 8MP wide-angle camera. This setup allowed us to effortlessly capture highquality selfies and super-wide landscape shots without having

to change a single setting.

The 50MP and 32MP HD front cameras contain autofocus and eye focus capabilities, respectively. This enables users to capture crystal clear images any time of the day or night. The front camera is also equipped with an AI HD Algorithm that optimises sharpness. Additionally, the Pro’s AI Skin Retouching Algorithm provides an airbrushed look when required.

The upgraded Super Night Mode feature accurately restored all colours and brightness levels of any highly saturated images we took. This feature is coupled with the new Real-Time Extreme Night Vision feature that allows users to manually adjust the exposure intensity when previewing an image.

As well as great still images, we found filming videos with the V25 Pro to be a rewarding and fun-filled experience. The SuperNight feature is brilliant at brightening videos shot in darker settings, as well as at noise reduction.

Natural Portrait video mode enhances overall skin texture and clarity and Hybrid Image Stabilization (OIS+EIS) ensures videos are clear and more stable.

vivo have included a new Vlog Movie feature designed to improve the filming experience. It comes with video tutorials and templates to guide users on how best to shoot in various scenarios.

The vivo V25 Pro houses a 4830mAh large battery along with a 66W FlashCharge capability which can be charged from flat to 71% in as little as half an hour. ✤

The General Manager of Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach discusses leadership and family.

fact magazine50 • 5 OVER 5

You studied Hospitality Management, so it was clearly something you were very passionate about, what appealed to you about the industry?

My passion came from my father who was in the same industry. However, I had opted to go into commerce initially but realised I wasn't looking forward to sitting behind a desk for the next 40 years. As my father was in hospitality too, I was exposed to the idea of hospitality from an early age. I started working as a waiter paying for my studies, but with the right encouragement from friends, who were in hotel management, I finally decided to do it and now here we are. It was one of the best decisions I have made.

You've recently had the official opening of the Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach, what makes it unique from other new hotels here?

Every hotel has rooms, restaurants, pools, etc, what makes a hotel unique is the people, the service culture and the blend of talent. I am really proud of the amazing team we have here who, with their real appetite for making a difference, bring a unique culture. When guests step into Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach, they will find a welcoming face, someone who is keen to show the hospitality we pride ourselves on.

You have an impeccable history as an experienced General Manager, what do you enjoy about your role? Being a General Manager allows me to make a difference and

create memories for our guests as well as the team members.

My job comes with huge responsibilities, one of the major ones is to showcase the right leadership skills to all staff, as they are all future leaders and need someone in their career path who they can trust and grow with. Every time I see a team member of mine make any kind of progress, that is a win for me and I swell with pride.

You have worked in Dubai, Thailand, and Tanzania, why did you choose to work in Qatar?

I am not new to the Middle East and choosing to work in Qatar during this iconic year was a no-brainer. It was an excellent opportunity to move to Qatar at such an exciting time when the eyes of the world are set on us. Being involved in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is a one-of-a-kind experience. Let's say I ticked one off from my bucket list.

When you're not busy running a new hotel, how do you spend your spare time?

Working in the hospitality industry, you struggle to find the balance but it's important to have those moments of recharge, physically and mentally. I'm a family man with a stunning and supportive wife and two young boys, so I like to be with them when I'm not working. I also try to find some time for myself to practice my golf skills, I'm an avid golfer. ✤

A WOMEN-FRIENDLY LUXURY OASIS

A unique new boutique hotel is opening its doors this year. Set on a beautiful beach, Sealine, Ramlah Qatar promises to offer guests an exquisite getaway with a particular emphasis on several special days each week just for women, as the resort’s owner Zamzam Ibrahim Al Assmakh, from Regency Group Holding, explains.

Qatar has seen a plethora of new hotels open this year, what is unique about Ramlah Qatar?

Located in one of Qatar’s most exclusive nature reserves, Sealine, Ramlah Qatar is a place of beautiful contrasts. Inspired by Qatar’s heritage and representing luxury, it creates a perfect alchemy of beauty in a rich atmosphere. The resort is located on one of the most pristine beaches in the country and uniquely brings together both the sea and sands, conjuring a magical experience of nature and beauty.

Several days a week will be allocated as ladies-only and the staff will be all female, we want to empower women and this is something that is very important to us. One of the key goals in developing this resort was to cater for the needs of the community of Qatar something that everyone can enjoy, particularly as the location is extremely private.

Also, there will be plenty of entertainment – events, musical nights, sports programmes that will be specifically curated for the venue, some public and some for ladies only. That is something that we believe is going to differentiate us.

How did the concept for this new beachfront hotel come together?

The exclusive boutique concept was curated for guests seeking a luxury getaway to one of the most breathtaking exclusive locations in the country, which is challenging for most people to access unless they have an off-road vehicle. Therefore, the idea was to provide guests with world-class hospitality where they can experience gourmet cuisine, rooms of a contemporary and luxury design and safe access to the heart of where the sea and desert meet in Qatar.

What is your background and how did you become involved in this project?

With a background in real estate, hotels and resort development, my drive was to contribute to filling a gap in the hospitality market in a location which has been part of the country’s heritage for decades. Creating access to the dunes for families and individuals seeking high-end, comfortable, luxury accommodation in the safest way was also part of our vision and my driving focus.

How would you describe the Ramlah Qatar experience?

Ramlah Qatar plays on the beautiful contrasts that guests can enjoy here. One moment they’re out in the desert and the next

fact magazine52 • HOTEL SPOTLIGHT

they’re on the beach. Our guests want playful and purposeful stays where they can engage their senses, whether that’s with breathtaking views, dining under the desert stars, musical experiences or adventure. Guests can be active both day and night. They have choice and freedom.

What are some of your favourite features about Ramlah Qatar?

It’s a desert oasis of luxury and fun representing the finest qualities of the Middle East. The resort blends the calm environment of the Arabian desert with serenity and relaxation. The design inspiration comes from the local environment of sandy dunes and limestone mountains. The colour theory is inspired from the surrounding landscape. The design creates a harmonious narrative between guests and the resort. The neutral tones reflect the sand, sunset, cliffs and the sea. From soft linen to raw limestone, a subtle blend of tones is used to re-create the same comfort found in the calmness of the desert. Textures are also an important part of the overall tone of the hotel. For example, we’ve used rattan and bamboo wood throughout the resort, which was inspired by East Asian culture. Apart from this, the outdoor areas were curated by international designers to extend the experience of the guest stay beyond the room and into the outdoors. The resort was created to appeal to guests all year round whether summer or winter.

It's also worth repeating that Ramlah Qatar will be one of the only resorts that will offer exclusive ladies-only days where female guest can experience the resort. That is something that is very important to me. ✤

SOUTH AMERICAN FUSION CUISINE

Chef Luigi Goytizolo talks about his Peruvian roots and showcasing his new culinary creations at IKA.

fact magazine54 • CHEF IN FOCUS

You started your career as a teenager at 17, what inspired you to become a chef?

My grandma, she was a fantastic cook, in fact she was the best! She supported my dream of becoming a chef and she literally inspired me. I remember on the weekends, we would wake up at 5am to go to the local farm and seafood market, bake tarts and make handmade anchovy pizza, lasagne and octopus with pesto. So, I owe her everything, and it’s thanks to her I am where I am today.

IKA is renowned for showcasing some of the best South American cuisines, what can diners expect next on the menu?

We are working on the new menu right now. Our focus is on creating a sensory experience for our guests and to take them to unknown corners of South America. I want them to taste original flavours and experience what it’s like to be there. When they try my food, I want to transport guests to the small towns in Peru, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil. I will keep delivering the best of South America but with my personal touch.

What is your signature must-try dish?

I will say Ceviche because it’s in my Peruvian blood. However,

árroz con pato (Duck with coriander rice) will be the signature dish on this new menu. It’s a slow-cooked duck, with coriander rice, huancaina (a chili cheese sauce) foam and baby vegetables. This is going to be our ‘must-try’ dish at IKA.

This is your first time in the Middle East. How have you found it, and how have you been exploring Qatar?

To be honest, it was not what I was expecting. I’m quite impressed with everything here! I’m pretty happy with the food quality, the level of the restaurants, the local gastronomy and the quality of life, I feel really safe here. Of course, there is an entirely different culture and reality here, but I adjusted pretty fast and I’m happy with my new life. I feel that Qatar has given me a lot, and it’s my time to give something back with all the passion I can put into IKA. I explore a lot in Doha, I’m a beach and pool person, and the beaches here are stunning. The malls are insane, I love the Corniche and Souq Waqif is a beautiful place to get lost and smoke hubbly bubbly. I tend to eat out a lot and I’m impressed with the local food. It’s a fantastic city and I wish I had a little more time to get to know it all. I am sure after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 I will have more time to discover it properly. ✤

AUTHENTIC THAI DINING

Natthapong Manothitikul, or Chef Torr as he’s fondly known at Thai Kitchen, discusses classical cooking techniques and his favourite beauty spot in Doha.

fact magazine56
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

Chef Torr, you began your career more than a decade ago in Dubai, why did you decide that this was the profession you wanted to go into?

Because I love cooking and creating new recipes and it makes me happy to see guests enjoying my food. While I was working in Dubai, I was introduced to a wide range of foods, spices and flavours that I wasn’t familiar with. As a result, different cuisines and ingredients have now become alternatives in my style of cooking. Classical techniques are still the basis for my cooking but I enjoy a continuous journey of self-improvement.

You've created a new menu at Thai Kitchen at Centara West Bay, what can diners look forward to?

Guests can expect the authentic taste of Thai street foods at Thai Kitchen, using fresh and premium quality ingredients that are available locally. Each dish has been lovingly made and has unique characteristics. Exploring the Thai Kitchen menu will take you on a culinary journey across Thailand's four regions with distinct flavours beautifully served at your table.

What is your signature dish and what makes it unique?

There are numbers of signature dishes at Thai Kitchen ranging from classic Pad Thai noodle to Tom Yum Soup. However, I would recommend trying one of our famous local Thai speciality dishes like Khao Soi, which is a curried noodle soup. It’s a deliciously rich, creamy, slightly spicy yellow curry dish originating from Northern Thailand. This dish is cooked with tender braised meat (chicken or beef) in a coconut curry broth with boiled and fried noodles. You can have it with various vegetable and spices including coriander, lime and pickled vegetables. Using cooking techniques and fresh ingredients, this dish is perfect to taste, smell, and touch.

When you're not creating exquisite Thai feasts, how do you enjoy your time off in Doha?

I like to go to different cafes in Doha and explore various dishes from street food to fine dining. I also like to search for new products which inspire me to create new items for our menu. Sometimes, I walk along the Doha Corniche in the morning, onto the pier where groups of fishermen sit on the boardwalk, offering fresh seafood. This waterfront space is one of my favourite spots for watching the sunset and the city skyline in the evenings. ✤

LORD OF THE WINGS

Kalvin Ng found nothing ‘off-side’ with Shehrazad Lounge Bar & Terrace as it prepares to welcome World Cup fans from around the globe.

With the FIFA Football World Cup Qatar 2022 taking place this month, excitement is hitting fever pitch. The Shehrazad Lounge Bar & Terrace at the Radisson Blu Hotel Doha is hoping to score a few winning goals as the premier sports eatery during the world’s biggest sporting event. The exhilaration grew as we made our way towards the lounge on the first floor of the hotel. Like a captain leading his team into a packed stadium, we walked in anticipation, down a corridor lined with black-and-white photos and quotes of sporting champions from the past. Once inside, signed shirts by England football legends Paul Scholes and Paul Gascoigne adorned the walls, along with 10 – yes 10 – large TVs showing a variety of live sports. I have no doubt the screens will exclusively show ‘the beautiful game’ once the World Cup begins in earnest on November 20. The venue had a friendly feel, was well-lit, spacious and had plenty of tables and seats inside. There was also a large outdoor area with four television screens – perfect for those who want to take advantage of the cooler weather during this time of the year.

The affable bar manager Armando and server Karla took us to a table by the window, which was quiet but still in full view of all the action on the TVs. We visited on ‘Combo Wednesday’, where diners can choose from a selection of four dishes with a speciality beverage included. We decided to go for the Bangers and Mash. Delicious sausages were paired with a thick, flavourful gravy and fluffy yet creamy mashed potatoes. It’s hard to go wrong with the bar food equivalent of comfort food.

fact magazine 59 CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Next came the Combo Sharing Platter with a generous selection of chicken sliders, fried seafood, onion rings and chicken wings. The pieces were bite-sized; perfect to pick up and devour while you turn your attention to the sports action. The fried fish and calamari pieces were perfectly crispy on the outside while soft on the inside, as were the lightly-battered onion rings. The golden, deep-fried prawns had a nice crunch from the breadcrumbs. The chicken sliders were tender and succulent. However, the fried chicken wings were, for me, the most valuable players on the platter. Wonderfully seasoned with light and crispy skins, I could understand why the other tables nearby had made the same choice! The platter paired perfectly with two refreshing mocktails Armando selected for us: a Ginger Peach, with just the right amount of zing from the ginger, and a deliciously fruity Cranberry Punch. Both were beautifully presented with mint and fresh fruit. With just minutes to go to the final whistle, the Classic Quesadilla arrived with diced tomatoes, green onions and creamy cheese sandwiched between lightly grilled tortillas, served with freshlymade guacamole and salsa. The combination was divine without being too greasy.

Shehrazad’s manager Armando explained that the lounge and terrace will introduce a focused menu made especially for the World Cup. He couldn’t give away too many details but promised a small selection of new dishes along with favourites such as pizza, steaks and burgers at reasonable prices. The idea, he said, was to provide easy, unpretentious and wholesome food. In fact, many of the food and beverage outlets at the Radisson Blu Hotel Doha have spent the past year creating dedicated menus to showcase their variety during the World Cup.

If you weren’t lucky enough to score tickets to watch a football match in person at a stadium, Shehrazad Lounge Bar & Terrace could well become the next best place to be. With a lively, fun and friendly atmosphere, it welcomes patrons from all over the world, whether you’re fanatic about sports or just want a relaxing place for a casual catch-up with friends. ✤

COMFORT FOOD MEETS CULINARY ART

Toby Hart discovered why Twisted Olive is the talk of the town.

Where West Bay’s pulsing metropolis overlooks the tranquil Arabian Gulf, you’ll find a sophisticated semi-circle of serenity. Twisted Olive, a bistro-style eatery nestled around the ground floor front perimeter of Doha Tower, revealed its chic style to me over a lunch-time encounter. The unexpectedly verdant surroundings provided solace amid the October heat, as natural green shade covered the terraced exterior. Arriving around noon, my guest and I were greeted by warm smiles and immediately escorted to an indoor table. Fellow diners were professionals on business lunches. From Qataris to Brits, the clientele all carried a similar sensibility; understated elegance. Parquet floors, walls of white and olive-green, offset by terrazzo tables and comfortable seating, set the tone. The earthy elegance translated to service staff, uniformly attired in crisp khaki and white ensembles.

We were guided by Head Chef Matthew Jansen van Vuuren. The mastermind behind Twisted Olive’s dishes, Matthew is a man on a mission in Qatar. Committed to creative exploration in cuisine, but never at the expense of value, he has earned his stripes in the industry and has made a point of putting together a team who share this work ethic.

From kitchen staff to front of house, the energy was consistent and the approach authentic, offering home-cooked homages, while embracing superior ingredients and premium presentation. This proved to be a case of trial and pleasure as we undertook a dish-sampling odyssey that included breakfast specialities, main course substance and dessert splendour. Never pushy but always present when needed, our main server

fact magazine 63 DINING DELIGHT •

Francis conveyed a genuine desire to showcase the cuisine at each stage. He was ably supported by Jema, with a calm demeanour, and the ever-polite Norlyn.

Our breakfast ‘guest’ Benedict, or Bennie as Twisted Olive nicknamed him, would be our poached egg companion, gracing three dishes. His first iteration was as Avo-licious Bennie, a fresh persona made wholesome by generous slices of perfectly ripened avocado, dressed with an irresistible relish, and reclining on a chaise longue of toasted brioche. We both agreed that the dish merited a return-visit.

The Porto-Bennie was the fun guy option, blending absolutely scrumptious parmesan spinach with oven roasted portobello mushrooms. I found myself coming back to this dish repeatedly to enjoy the fresh creaminess. It was a wonderful veggie option that satisfied without compromise. The Hashbrown-Bennie with caramelised onion, a new addition to the menu, was also very tasty and generously seasoned.

I favour savoury over sweet for breakfast, but the Banoffee French Toast demanded a try. Caramelised banana sunbathing on honey-soaked bread, with Häagen-Dazs ice cream on the side, it was a righteously decadent salute to the sunrise. Amid a mouth-watering maelstrom, the Buttermilk Fried Chicken on French toast came out tops. The crumbed fillet pieces fulfilled the melt-in-my-mouth cliché. This tender fried chicken is southern comfort, Middle-Eastern style.

After a hugely satisfying start, our main-course mania began with the Rigatoni Bolognaise, with truffle sauce adding a decadent twist that didn’t deviate from tradition. The Travelling Chickpea vegan option was an aesthetic delight with its vivid beetroot hummus accoutrement. It was absolutely sumptuous from the very first bite

A plate of Wagyu Sliders served with crispy fries delivered an unpretentious gourmet burger experience, where smoked provolone and veal bacon played upon a brioche base.

First among equals were the refreshing, tender cubes of Saku Tuna, accompanied by zesty mango salsa and a mayonnaise that added real zip. Resistance was futile.

If you’re intending to get your guns out this beach season, then The Forty-Four is your kind of dish. This Schwarzenegger of salads boasted an army of healthy protein-packed ingredients that had me wanting to run the streets of Philadelphia to the Rocky theme after a few forkfuls of grilled chicken breast, baby spinach, broccoli, quinoa and ubiquitous boiled eggs. Don’t, however, be fooled into thinking this is an ensemble of all brawn and absolutely no taste.

On the contrary, the salad dressing was intoxicatingly fragrant, and it was a delicious muscle-car of a meal.

With mains done and dusted, we prepared to finish in style with some diet-wrecking desserts.

I couldn’t fault a decadent hybrid of a baked blackberry cheesecake and traditional brownie, as the delicious, whipped mascarpone and blackberry compote tangoed mercilessly with my taste buds. My guest tried the espresso version of the Crème Brulee with its pistachio biscotti. He found it to have a wonderful balance, with the right amount of sweetness.

Sampling the Bread and Butter Pudding took me back to my childhood. Chef Matthew revealed the secret behind the yumfactor; buttery croissants as the bread base. Twisted Olive made it just like my grandmother used to. I found the sense of home comfort in each spoonful endearing.

The latest addition to the dessert menu, the Cup of Happiness, integrated ethically sourced ingredients with cool, calming chia. The Strawberry Tiramisu though took the cake for me, as I finished every delectable morsel of it.

We ended our odyssey with fresh ginger tea and a farewell, but for me, certainly not a goodbye. I shall return.

For the uninitiated, I suggest parking in the tower basement, saving time and perspiration. I’m also told that Fridays are jampacked with the trendy set, so it’s best to book in advance to avoid disappointment ✤

EAST MEETS BEST

Toby Hart discovered that Toshi is ready to turn heads again in Doha.

Chinese. Japanese. Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai. If Qatar was hosting an Asian Cuisine Summit, you would want to hold it at Millennium Plaza Doha, in their suave signature eatery, Toshi. This is where you’ll find a cross-pollination of culinary creativity, a pantheon of Pan-Asian fare. This is where East meets best. Toshi is a premium experience with a commitment to individuality. The restaurant has undergone some transformative steps since hibernating during lockdown, but now Toshi is back with a bang, and I was there to savour a soft-launch soiree that rendered seismic numbers on the taste scale.

Arriving at the main entrance to the Millennium Plaza Doha, it was a short walk from the ground floor lobby to Toshi’s entrance. As I left the hotel’s bright illumination and entered the low-lit elegance of Toshi, the lounge music conveyed a cool Latin undercurrent. It was subtle and unobtrusive. The glow of the tables, well-spaced apart, offered an intimacy that makes it the perfect place for romantic first dates and anniversary meals. It’s also ideal for hosting business dinners over multiple courses.

The evening was guided by Kishan Belwal, the Restaurant Manager. A cosmopolitan, sartorial host, Kishan has brought his regional experience and some serious poise and polish, to Doha. He took me on an insightful tour of the Toshi menu, revealed some tried-and tested favourites and dished up a few fresh surprises. I began my evening with a signature Toshi mocktail of lemongrass, lemon ginger, Thai chilli and basil leaves, with lime wedges, amplified by a generous dash of lemonade. They call it the Spicy Thai and I can tell you why; the drink has a wicked bite to it that is both refreshingly sharp and exactingly tart. This was my sensory wake-up call between each course, as it cleansed the palate and stimulated the taste buds.

The Tom Yum soup was my appetiser kick-off. An authentic, richlyspiced broth, with prawns procured from the Gulf, and infused with fresh Thai chilli that was hand-ground, in-house, I used it as a conduit dish, readying my appetite for the forthcoming fusion journey.

Before the starters, I was introduced to maestro Numeriano, the Head Chef at Toshi. With years of experience in presenting Pan-Asian perfection to Middle Eastern and expatriate palates, Chef Numeriano has been given the freedom to experiment, producing some exhilarating new options for the menu.

The Japanese sun rose on the classic battered Ebi Tempura prawns, served with soya sauce and a chilli dip. Chef Numeriano told me that this is a popular signature starter, and I soon realised why.

The prawns were light and crispy with a tender and juicy texture that eschewed all chewiness and went straight for the tastiness plaudits. I found them delectably crunchy and without any oiliness. It was a clean way to indulge my decadent deep-fry cravings.

The standout starter was the Crab Salad with avocado and mango. The angel-hair pasta-style presentation of the crab component - delicately shaved slices that dissolved in my mouth - combined with the freshness of the fruit, formed a formidable appetiser.

Small confession. My kryptonite is Thai peanut sauce. Serve me that and you’ve already won half the battle for the taste buds. Such was the case with the Beef Satay appetiser – tender skewers of grilled beef, with no trace of chewiness at all. Served with a bean-

fact magazine 67 ON THE MENU •

sprout salad and the aforementioned knee-weakening sauce, it was very easy to like.

Sushi is a key attraction at Toshi. I tried three different iterations among many options. The Garden Roll, with its seasonal vegetables, salsa verde and Thai peanut sauce, was the runnerup. I really enjoyed its fresh, wholesome quality. My handsdown favourite among the sushi dishes though, was the Toshi Special Roll. It’s a signature dish, and a singularly delicious one at that. Combining spicy tuna and asparagus, glazed with crunchy tempura and a delightfully spicy mayonnaise, it embodied the best of decadent Western desires and nuanced Asian style. The dichotomy between the crunchy exterior and the tender filling was irresistible.

For mains, I sampled two fresh additions to the menu. First up was Grilled Tenderloin beef. I asked for mine medium-rare and the kitchen prepared it precisely to my requirements, placing it atop a base of mixed mushrooms and noodles. The base had a texture and taste reminiscent of Swiss potato rösti, with an Asian twist. It was crispy and crunchy, creating a complementary contrast to the tender, succulent fillets of beef.

Tops among the twin-threat mains was the Pan-Seared Salmon. Chef Numeriano had me at salmon, so the crispness and crunchiness of the dish, with its ginger and sweet teriyaki glazing, completed me. What sealed the deal for me , was the soy sauce foundation. Once the tender salmon had melted into the sauce, the combined tastes played a gastronomic symphony.

For dessert, I tried the Banana Spring Roll, a light and oil-free pastry with a honeyed-banana filling, accompanied by exquisite ice cream. While I had little room left, I couldn’t resist finishing the entire serving. It was that good.

After a refreshing pot of Earl Grey tea and a chat with Kishan, I headed home contemplating my stylish evening. With their action cooking ethos, supported by a show kitchen, a Teppanyaki Table, a Sushi and Sashimi Counter, and ambiance in spades, I suspect that you may find your Pan-Asian muse by following your heart to Toshi. ✤

ESCAPE TO ANOTHER WORLD

Float away from it all at the award-winning spa Bioskinspa where Kay Woodward spent a morning being alternately wowed and relaxed.

• SPA & WELLNESS

The moment I arrived at Bioskinspa, I knew it was going to be fabulous. But – spoiler alert – I didn’t know quite how out-of-this-world fabulous it was going to be.

The first clue was the spa entrance. The towering bamboo amid trickling water and the wall of teal and purple flowers heralded a gateway to another world. The traffic noise faded behind me as I walked away from frantic city life and into an oasis of pure calm. Reception was light and airy, the staff uber welcoming. Within minutes, I was sipping a glass of refreshing detox water, infused with grapefruit, orange and mint. I immediately relaxed.

Certified by the International Organisation for Standardisation in Qatar way back in 2005, Bioskinspa is a shining star of the Doha spa scene. The secret to its success is undoubtedly its fusion of Swiss and Italian products and technologically advanced machines. PR Manager Khouloud explained why clients won’t receive the same incredible treatments anywhere else in Doha – both the wide range of Biosphere Swiss Cosmetics and ORA products and futuristic technology are exclusive to Bioskinspa. Its talented, knowledgeable and friendly therapists are the icing on the cake. No wonder clients go back time and time again for their bespoke courses of treatment.

My trio of treats began with the Glass Skin Facial with Mylene. As the name implies, this was anything but an everyday facial, but I could never have foreseen the magic that was about to take place.

Imagine, if you will, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody – a masterpiece comprised of wildly different musical styles that surprise and delight at every turn. The Glass Skin Facial is the facial equivalent. Mylene cleansed, exfoliated and then proceeded to treat my skin to a succession of luxurious products, while applying truly remarkable rollers that smoothed, invigorated, warmed and cooled my skin until it glowed. Wow!

My mood sky high, we headed in that direction, whizzing upstairs. Bioskinspa is way bigger than I’d imagined. There’s a special VIP section too. But after experiencing just one of the glorious treatments on offer and seeing so many clients coming and going, it’s clear to see why they need the space.

SPA & WELLNESS •

On the next floor, Rosemary awaited, along with the realisation that the surprises weren’t over yet. O2 Hair Therapy is something else. Designed to promote growth and stop hair loss, my scalp was treated to blasts of oxygen. That’s the technical description, of course. What the treatment actually felt like was funnels of chilled air. O2 Hair Therapy is a breezy Alpine walk of a treatment. It was, quite literally, cool. But, as before, this was only the first step. Firm, experienced fingers massaged my head so well that I had to remind myself to stay awake. An unctuous mixture of ORA hair mask and oil coated the ends of my hair. Then followed a neck and shoulder massage of champions.

Here, I have to pause and pay homage to truly the king of hairwashing chairs. It whirred into motion, lifted me until I was horizontal and then continued to massage me gently while my hair was shampooed. It’s quite possibly the best hair wash I’ve ever had and shows how Bioskinspa’s machines are designed to make everything better. Finally, it was time for my Aromatic Massage with Melanie, who expertly smoothed away knots and banished tension. I’d love to spend more time describing it, but the truth is that it was so first-rate, I somewhat drifted off. I would happily go every week just to experience the sense of utter calm and relaxation I felt afterwards. Though I’m rather tempted by the exceedingly popular Slimming Massage too.

I floated out of Bioskinspa on a cloud of head-to-toe happiness and two days later, I’m still experiencing a postsalon glow. My complexion is clear and bright, my hair soft and revitalised. I feel fabulous. There are two branches of Bioskinspa in Doha. I visited the Duhail branch, which is close to the Duhail flyover and therefore incredibly easy to reach from pretty much anywhere in the city. But if that’s too far, don’t worry, because there’s a branch nestled in Salata too. No matter where you live, you’re just minutes away from an experience that you will never forget. ✤

FROM REFUGEE TO RENOWNED ARTIST

fact magazine82 • ARTS & CULTURE
Diyar Al Asadi discusses fleeing the war in Iraq, his big break at 13 and how his painting of the country’s Emir led him to becoming a resident in Doha with FACT’s Homara Choudhary.

THE JOURNEY:

Diyar’s love for art began when he was still in primary school at the age of seven. Born in Baghdad, he and his family were forced to leave Iraq during the war in 2004 and flee to Egypt where they lived for five years. Diyar described the moment he first began painting:

“I was at school and we were asked to volunteer to paint a mural, I immediately put my hand up. It really started from there. When the war began, we escaped to Egypt, but we soon ran out of money. My dad wasn’t well and my mum has a heart condition so she couldn’t work.”

Realising his family had no income or any means to support themselves Diyar, the eldest of three, began selling his art to take care of his family. He was 12 years old.

“I have two younger sisters and one brother so I decided to do art for a living,” he explained. “My mum would help me to sell my work. People would ask her who the painter was? They wanted to help Iraqi artists.”

Diyar’s talent didn’t go unnoticed. He got his big break at 13, when he was sponsored by Townhouse Gallery in Cairo. It was then that he began to study art full-time. A Russian teacher taught him how to use acrylic and water colours: “She saw me, in her words, as a ‘shining star.’ She was really tough on me and even now I am still a pupil of art and continue to study it, to grow and help with my ideas. I don’t have one style of painting.” The 29-year-old describes his work as modern Islamic art. After leaving Egypt, Diyar spent three years in Jordan where his teacher and mentor taught him everything he

fact magazine 83 ARTS & CULTURE •

knows about Islamic art: “I was in high school during the day and, in the evenings, I would go to art school, where I learned a lot about Islamic art and decorative Islamic art. My Iranian teacher taught me everything about Islamic art.”

From Amman, Diyar and his family were moved by the United Nations to the US, where he won not one but two scholarships. One was to the prestigious New York University and the other was to the Art League of New York: “I decided to go to the Art League, where I studied for three years. I learned so much there about different styles, techniques, mixing colours and balance. It was an invaluable experience,” he says.

Diyar said that was when he decided he wanted to paint more about modern day life and less about the pain of war: “I wanted to paint about healing and love. Initially my work had been more abstract. I wanted to make Islamic art more relatable, not just something you see in museums. When I moved to the US, I decided I wanted it to be more modern and for it to relate to Arabs and to where Islam originated from.”

THE SHEIKH TAMIM PAINTING

I asked Diyar about his painting of the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the inspiration behind it: “There was a UN lecture in New York in 2016 and Sheikh Tamim was in attendance. It was there that I heard him discuss Qatar’s environment and sustainability goals and how the country was getting ready to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. I felt so inspired with everything he said. I thought it was beautiful that he was standing up for his country and he wanted to make it a better place to live, not just for him, but for the entire nation.”

fact magazine84
• ARTS & CULTURE

In 2020 Diyar sold some of his paintings in Qatar, it was then that he decided to also paint the Emir and the story of the World Cup: “My art isn’t about a portrait or an emotion. It doesn’t need a series of paintings to understand what it is about. You only need one painting, one masterpiece to look at and get lost in it. I want my work to be mesmerising.”

His stunning painting of the Emir took him four months to complete, working 14-hour days. The young artist said he wanted his work to mark the historic moment of the World Cup coming to Qatar: “The idea was to merge the theme of the World Cup and the Emir. So you see him standing in front of it, with an abaya wrapped around the trophy. You also see the famous Finar mosque and a falcon holding the Asian Cup which they [Qatar] won in 2019.” Diyar said since he hadn’t been to Qatar at that point, he did a lot of reading and research to transcribe Qatar’s rich history onto canvas. A lot of his own feelings of what the Gulf state means to him are present in the painting: “You’ll see lots of orchids, they represent the Qatari women, to me they are the guardians of the water in the painting but also the guardians of life. There’s also a cherry blossom tree. I know they don’t grow here, but to me it represents beauty. You also see the sun and the solar system. To me that represents the world and how the entire world is coming to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup,” he explains.

The piece has since been sold for an undisclosed amount in America and allowed Diyar to help his family set up a trucking business and buy a house in Phoenix, Arizona. The painting has also led to more than 140 prints of the original being sold.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT:

Diyar visited Qatar for the first time in August to deliver a painting to a client. He said it was cheaper than shipping and he was curious to visit Qatar, the country that had inspired his recent work. “I am turning 30 next year and I wanted to travel. I also wanted to explore the Middle East and, of course, visit Qatar. So, I decided to hand-deliver my painting and see Qatar at the same time.”

He smiles as he tells me he came for a two-week holiday but hasn’t been able to leave as he’s been inundated with requests: “I got a commission as soon as I arrived, in fact five paintings have already been ordered from five different clients. Each one takes about a month. People tell me what they want and I use my vision and creativity to tell their story. After all, I am a storyteller.”

Diyar is modest when it comes to his success despite there now being a year-long waiting list for his work. But it’s not just private collectors that were impressed with his talents. He’s been asked to work with a local firm to create cover books for them – which means he’s now been granted permanent residency to live in Qatar. Diyar’s artistic journey is a heroic one and the refugee who began painting to help his family is now an acclaimed citizen of the world. ✤

MAGICAL MOROCCO

Characterised by an exotic culture and offering a multitude of experiences, the Kingdom of Morocco, as it’s officially known, is a wonderful place to visit during the winter.

Morocco is a popular tourist destination and, yes, it can get quite crowded during the summer. However, if you visit this time of the year, you can enjoy the best of the country from skiing, desert camping and hiking to sightseeing, cultural activities and more without having to wade through a sea of eager travellers. Additionally, the climate is pleasant with temperatures never exceeding 17 degrees Celsius. In this feature, we will explore three major cities in Morocco, each offering different things to see and do.

RABAT

The capital city, Rabat is steeped in history and home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Kasbah des Oudaias is a popular attraction. Bab Oudaia, the gateway to this walled citadel, is a fine piece of Moroccan architecture and features arabesque designs and inscriptions in Kufic script, a decorative style. Some of the remains of the fortress date as far back as the 12th century. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean from here. The Bou Regreg river empties into the ocean at this location.

In the same premises, you can visit Jama' al-'Atiqa or the Old Mosque. A medieval Moroccan mosque, it was largely restored in the 18th century. However, only Muslims are allowed to enter. There’s an Andalusian Garden here as well, which features a variety of trees and plants such as bougainvillea and citrus trees and is a hit with locals and tourists alike. If you want to catch a glimpse of the locals going about their daily lives, head to the souq or marketplace in the old town of Rabat. ‘Blue Town’ is also located here. Dotted with white and blue-walled houses, it offers a beautiful backdrop for photographs.

Hassan Tower minaret invokes strong emotions. Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur, an Almohad Caliphate ruler, set out to build the largest mosque in the world with the tallest minaret. Sadly, he died before the completion of the work. Today, the unfinished minaret stands at 44m tall alongside remains of partially built walls and columns. Across from Hassan Tower is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. It exhibits traditional Moroccan craftsmanship and holds the tombs of the King and his two late sons.

Explore Chellah, the location of an ancient Roman city. As you walk across the site, you will see broken columns and stones with inscriptions among the remains. This site also served as a necropolis, which was destroyed due to earthquakes and looting. You can find parts of mosques and tombs among the remains.

Art lovers must visit Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, one among the 14 museums of the National Foundation of Museums of Morocco. In addition to housing the work of popular Moroccan artists of the likes of Hassan Hajjaj and Ahmed Yacoubi, it also showcases pieces by contemporary artists.

MARRAKESH

Visually, Marrakesh is a flaming coral sea of structures sculpted out of a variety of native clay. That’s what gives the city its name – red city. Marrakesh gained further mainstream popularity with the Netflix series Inventing Anna, which featured Jardin Majorelle, a complex of gardens and buildings. In the garden, which sprawls across two acres, you can find a notable collection of cacti, sculptures and fountains. Additionally, it’s home to local birds. The complex also houses a museum, which has the original owner Jacques Majorelle’s paintings and artefacts from the Berber culture – an ethnic group indigenous to North Africa including Morocco. Jardin Majorelle is presently owned by renowned fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent. Musée Yves Saint Laurent, a museum dedicated to the fashion brand, is located a stone's throw away. Kutubiyya Mosque, the largest in Marrakesh, is so named because of the book-selling trade that was practised in the nearby souq; the word Kutubiyya is derived from the Arabic word meaning booksellers. The mosque’s minaret, a popular symbol of Marrakesh, is the source of a well-known legend: it’s said that the trio of copper spheres on the spire were originally made of gold. Either way, the mosque exhibits beautiful Moroccan architecture, which is admirable. Close to Kutubiyya Mosque are the Menara Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend some peaceful hours immersed in nature. You can find olive, fruit and cypress

fact magazine88 • TRAVEL

trees here. Walk around, inhaling the fresh air and then, head to a nearby cafe.

Jemaa-el-Fna, a marketplace and square at the entrance of the old city or medina, is protected as a ‘cultural space’ and recognised for its ‘intangible heritage’. It used to be the gathering place of local vendors, from traditional dentists and snake charmers to story-tellers. Today, it’s a buzzing hub of henna tattoo artists and potion sellers – you can buy a range of herbal products here; argan and other herbal oils, face masks, Moroccan teas… At night, the space transforms into a cultural extravaganza of performers and musicians. Souq Semmarine, right next to Jemaa-el-Fna, is a bustling market offering a variety of products such as textiles, carpets, leather goods, spices and handicrafts – the perfect pit stop for some souvenir shopping – don’t forget to buy yourself a pair of the popular babouche slippers – colourful, embroidered closed flats.

Pay a visit to Musée de la Musique in Mouassine to discover the musical heritage of Morocco. Located in a 16th- to 17th-century house, the space hosts many permanent and temporary exhibitions. The main attraction, however, is the musical evenings, where you can enjoy a live performance, followed by traditional Moroccan tea and biscuits.

If you’re planning an extended vacation later this year, don’t miss skiing at Oukaïmeden. It’s less than a two-hour drive from Marrakesh and one the premier ski areas in all of Morocco. Standing at over 3,000m, it’s the highest ski resort in Africa. There are slopes for all abilities. While the main ski months are from mid-December until around the end of March, January and February are said to be most ideal. You can rent a chalet in the area to rest after your adrenaline-pumping adventure.

Agafay is a popular camping site, located about an hour from Marrakesh. It’s more luxury camping or ‘glamping’

as it’s commonly known. Explore the dunes on a buggy or quad bike, relax in a tent or around a campfire and swim in an outdoor pool – a tranquil oasis in the middle of a desert!

CHEFCHAOUEN

Nestled in the foothills of the Rif mountain range, Chefchaouen is most known for its expanse of blue and white buildings. There are many theories behind this colour choice. Some attribute the trend to Jewish immigrants, others say it’s to keep mosquitos away. Regardless, it lends a certain aesthetic to the cityscape, making it a photographer’s paradise. It’s not uncommon for tourists to pose in front of blue-hued houses and decorative doors.

Nature buffs will enjoy exploring this natural haven. Many hiking trails start from Chefchaouen. You could explore these on your own or hire a guide. Once you reach the top, the view is astounding. Sunrises and sunsets are mesmerising here. The hike to Jebel El-Kalaa summit is popular.

Adrenaline junkies don’t forget to hike up to Cascades d'Akchour or Akchour Waterfalls. It’s a beautiful sight to behold and the journey, surrounded by foliage and rock formations, birds chirping and the sound of the river is surreal too. The hike to the grand cascade, or taller waterfall, will take longer. There’s a shorter route that leads to the lower stream and there are other mid-level streams too. Once you’re there, dip your feet in the water and refresh yourself before you head back.

If you have more time, or another day to spare, hike to Pont de Dieu or God’s Bridge. It’s a rock formation that forms a bridge between two mountains, which looks like an archway when you see it from down below where the hike ends; there’s a river and waterfall here too. In fact, the starting point of the trail is a dam, which branches out into two paths – one leading to God’s Bridge and the other to Akchour Waterfalls.

Spelunkers in the house can explore Kef Toghobeit, the deepest cave in Morocco and third deepest in Africa. It’s a formation in the Riff Mountains, located in Bab Taz, which is about an hour from Akchour village.

Ras el-Maa is a popular natural spring that flows through the city. It’s surrounded by restaurants where you can enjoy a local meal with the sound of babbling brooks to serenade you. The tagine is a must-try; named after the uniquely shaped clay vessel in which the food – typically vegetables with lamb, chicken or fish – is cooked. It’s a slow cooking process with evenly distributed heat, which seals in the flavours and nutrients.

End your trip with an authentic Moroccan hammam experience. Ensure you go to a local place as that’s where you will enjoy an unfiltered version. When we say unfiltered, we mean it quite literally because a hammam is basically a public bath. Traditionally, bathers take their time, chatting sat in a large steam room, so to speak, scrubbing each other’s backs using a special perfumed soap-like object. You could even buy these at the local flea market for an extended hammam long after you’ve returned home. ✤

Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey DahmerStory

Need to Know:

Based on the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, the biographical crime drama series portrays the making of the ‘monster’. It showcases both sides to the story – the childhood trauma that may have caused Dahmer to transform into the nightmare we know, while at the same time asking the important question – does his trauma justify his actions – killing at least 17 young men, including minors?

Director: Ryan Murphy

Cast : Evan Peters, Richard Jenkins, Molly Ringwald, Niecy Nash, Michael Learned

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The 10-part Netflix series follows the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, from his childhood right up to his murder in prison. An inconsistent childhood, with parents fighting and finally their divorce, seems to have deeply influenced the protagonist, whose father, observing his keenness for science, teaches him to dissect roadkill, only for the former to realise his deep obsession with organs. Dahmer seems to be your American boy next-door, working odd jobs and living in a humble apartment in a primarily African-American neighbourhood – there’s a race angle to the story. However, he brings home victims – predominantly black – on the pretext of being a photographer looking for models. He then kills them violently, after which he dismembers their bodies and even resorts to cannibalism – gory. The scenes are pretty graphic, inducing a gag reflex, especially the one where Dahmer is shown tucking into what looks like a cooked steak but…

Despite repeated complaints by his neighbour, the police exhibit a careless attitude until one of Dahmer’s victims manages to run away. Victims’ corpses decomposing in acid, a freezer stocked with vital organs and skulls and bones stashed away are some of the items the police later discover.

Brilliant cinematography, compelling acting and clever direction come together to create this must-watch true-crime series.

Luckiest Girl Alive

Need to Know:

A mystery thriller, the film is based on the screenplay by Jessica Knoll who is also the author of the novel with the same title. Ani, the protagonist, seems to have it all. A successful career as senior editor of a reputed New York women’s magazine, the perfect relationship… However, she seems to be harbouring a dark past.

Director: Mike Barker

Cast : Mila Kunis, Finn Wittrock, Scoot McNairy, Thomas Barbusca, Jennifer Beals, Connie Britton

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Horrors from Ani’s past resurface when she is approached by a documentary director, working on a film about a school shooting. The plot goes on to reveal that the shooting took place at Ani’s school. She clearly hasn’t gotten over it yet but there’s more than what meets the eye.

In a series of flashbacks, we see Ani joining a prestigious school. While there, she befriends some popular kids, particularly three boys. It’s interesting to watch how starkly different the personalities of teenaged Ani and present-day Ani are. Characteristic traits that she seems to have locked up inside her over the years. Mila Kunis plays this complex character quite convincingly.

The plot goes on to reveal that young Ani was accused as an accomplice in the shooting, which killed two of the boys and handicapped the third –Dean Barton – who is also part of the documentary. Director Mike Barker has created a tension between characters that stems from human emotion – its fragility and volatility. The plot twist comes when we learn who the shooters are.

Dealing with these skeletons from her past forces Ani to take a hard look at who she really is and what she really wants. Will she stay true to herself? Will she finally redeem herself? It’s refreshing to see a female lead. Further, intense drama woven around important social issues will keep you going on this one.

ON THE RECORD

God Save The Animals

Alex G is an American musician, producer and singer-songwriter who started his career with DIY self-releases. God Save The Animals is his ninth album released by Domino Recording Company. The songs on this one feel like they’ve been produced from the bedroom or garage. They’re easygoing with simple lyrics and music. However, neither is simplistic.

One wonders why the album is so named but when you listen to the words, you sense a tension that’s commonly experienced in relationships with people, with oneself even – is that why? There’s a wide range of musical elements, which showcase the artist’s creativity, from simple, stringy guitars and clear, crisp drumbeats to voice distortions and background whispers for added effect.

The opening After All starts with a guitar piece that gives off country music vibes. It then transitions into a trance-like sound, setting the mood for the rest of the album. When you’re halfway through, the sound changes in Cross The Sea, which is completely different from the tracks right up to that point; almost seeming to have Eastern-influenced music and beats. Following it is Blessing, which is heavily characterised by indie-rock elements.

The LP has foot-tapping numbers, such as Runner, Early Morning Waiting and Headroom Piano, that keep the spirits high and slower ones, such as Immunity, Miracles and Forgive, which balance things out. All in all, this album is the perfect background score to an evening indoors, by the fireside or even outdoors around a campfire, offering intense emotional themes to mull over.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE, POP Moss

Maya Ray Thurman Hawke is an American actress, model and singersongwriter. Earlier this year, she released the single Thérèse and announced the release of Moss by record label Mom + Pop Music. She has been quoted as saying “music is the best way to communicate poetry” and those are exactly the vibes Moss gives off. The music is soothing, simple with the acoustic guitar standing out.

It makes you picture Hawke sitting on her bed, strumming away and pouring out her innermost thoughts. These thoughts are deep, we realise when we try to study the lyrics of the songs that cover diverse themes.

The album starts with Backup Plan where Hawke declares: “I wanna be anything you've lost that you might be lookin' for”.

There are undertones of friendship here, love even. Bloomed Into Blue suggests a struggle to be yourself against a world that’s trying to change you, fit you into a standard mould, leaving you with no other choice but to disappear. The tambourine in the background adds a certain light-hearted element, in keeping with the tone of the LP.

The music picks up pace in Sweet Tooth , an ode to Hawke’s mother, you’d think. However, the song is so relatable, it could be about mothers around the world: “I'm grateful for everything you put me through. It's the only reason I'm any good to talk to. When I'm sick or suffering, I'll still call you. About my big, sore sweet tooth.”

Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story

Bono, the frontman of U2 and one of the world’s most celebrated artists and activists, has released an autobiography. The book goes from his younger days growing up in Dublin and the sudden loss of his mother at the tender age of 14, to U2’s unexpected journey and success as one of the world’s most dominant rock bands, as well as his activism against AIDS and poverty. Nostalgic and self-reflective qualities offer an intimate glimpse into his character and inner life and reveal the family, friends and experiences that have challenged and shaped him throughout the years. He says: “Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress...With a fair amount of fun along the way."

The American novelist and playwright Cormac McCarthy has released his first novel in a 15 years. The Pullitzer Prize winner for his 2007 novel The Road has been named one of the four major American novelists of his time by critic Harold Bloom. The Passenger tells the tale of a deep-sea crash site which mysteriously lacks the pilot’s flight bag, the plane’s black box and the 10th passenger. Bobby Western, the protagonist of the story and discoverer of the site, tries to unravel the puzzle as he travels across the American South. Throughout his journey, he is constantly shadowed by men with badges and haunted by the ghost of his father, the inventor of the bomb that fell on Hiroshima during World War II, and his sister, who is both his greatest love and downfall.
