Take our local spotlight at the brand new Souq Al Wakra Hotel (p43); a weekend break with a difference at Crowne Plaza Doha – The Business Park (p49); a trip to the exotic shores of magical Marrakech and a stay at the even more mesmerising Mandarin Oriental (p55); and an out-of-this-world escape in Puglia at the picturesque Don Totu Storica (p60). Now, if that’s not spoilt for choice, I don’t know what is. October is set to be a turning point in weather (fingers crossed) and the month when the first of our almost winter clothes start to make an appearance. So make sure to check out our fashion, beauty and home pages for a new season means new style, new beauty and grooming regimes, and new vibes for your interiors. NEW ESCAPE FROM THE CITY Nestled amongst the newly established Souq on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, Souq Al Wakra Hotel opened its doors last month in the up-and-coming district of Al Wakra HAVING ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS a prominent coastal settlement for pearl divers, sailors and fishermen, Al Wakra has flourished as a trading post since the 17th century, but growth slowed down when supplies ran out. Recent investment has resulted in efforts to preserve and revive heritage sites, including the development of Souq Al Wakra Hotel. Blending artful Qatari tradition and contemporary leisure, the new hotel comprises of two buildings with a total of 101 guest rooms. Both buildings are former heritage houses where original character has been splendidly preserved with the architecture mirroring a Qatari house or fortress. In keeping with the local heritage, each of the guest rooms and suites features classic thatched roofs, reflecting traditional basket weaving elements. The guest rooms have been thoughtfully designed with colourful motifs reflecting the jubilant blues of the sea and the sandy tones of the desert, inspired by Al Wakra’s history as a pearl diving and fishing village. Open walkways and maze-like paths lead to courtyards where multiple guest rooms can be blocked off to create private areas for groups. Offering ultimate privacy, large parties will be able to stay together in guest rooms grouped around shaded majlis, perfect for celebrations or family gatherings. Souq Al Wakra Hotel Qatar by Tivoli has created dining delights 10

in five restaurants and lounges. Jarnen offers Mediterranean allday dining; Markhan is an Arabic fusion lounge; Emshoot invites guests to discover the culinary delights of Asia’s diverse flavours; Mahaadeg’s terrace offers lighter dishes; and the Lobby Lounge tempts palates with a range of quick bites. To complement the water front location, Tivoli Spa will provide an absolute state of relaxation and well-being with separate treatment rooms for men and women as well as a hydro pool, steam room, Vichy Shower and jacuzzi. High-end spa products effectively target the physical signs of stress and fatigue. A multifunctional gym in each building is also available for all guests. Souq Al Wakra is quickly becoming a local meeting point with vendors and merchants selling their native goods from traditional garments to dates and spices, as well as souvenirs. The Souq comes to life at night with locals and tourists who dine and drink tea along the promenade. The regeneration of the area also includes historical landmarks such as Al Wakra Fort, a short walk from the property, which will soon reopen after refurbishment. ✤

• MUSIC Let’s take it back… do you remember your first experience of listening to music and how it made you feel? To explain how my first experience was with music will be a bit hard because I don’t remember, but I do remember my older brothers listening to a Venezuelan ska band (Desorden Publico) and now no matter which part of the world I am in, if I listen to it, it makes me feel like home. What inspired you to take to the decks and become a DJ? I decided to become a DJ because I LOVE music, and all types of music. Also, I really enjoy witnessing something I did, or something I am doing, and how it has or is having a positive effect on others. For me, there is no better feeling than when I am doing something I love and enjoy, and seeing people having an absolute blast, dancing and sharing this special moment with me. DJ’ing is all about skill and practice, how many years have you dedicated to perfecting this talent – and what have been some of the most challenging aspects? I’ve been dj’ing for six years and every year there are new challenges, new techniques, new beats to play with and one of the most challenging things for me is the scratching technique, but I will not give up until I can master it! What kind of music are you personally into – what’s on your playlist at the moment? This is a tough question, as previously stated, I love music and I think there is a perfect song for each moment that depends on the vibe and the place, maybe the mood also. But what I personally have on my

36

iTunes playlist that I listen to when I’m getting ready for work, doing my makeup, is R&B/Soul, Future Soul, TrapHouse/Jazz, Alternative/Indie, downtempo and some of my favourites like; FKJ , Masego, Tom Mish, The Weeknd and also I have to confess that I listen to a lot of reggaeton too. Being a DJ can often mean late nights and irregular hours – how do you cope with the lifestyle? Well to be honest, I’ve been a vampire my whole life! I remember all the fights I had with my mom every morning for waking me up to go to school until she decided to change me to afternoon shifts. You’re now at the Shangri-La Doha – tell us what guests can expect from your set when they visit the hotel? My sets depend on the crowd and the mood but definitely I can guarantee that I would drop some latino songs and we will have a lot of fun. What’s your DJ’ing style – do you interact with the crowd and take a lot of requests or do you like to play by ear and already know what you’ll put on before you start the set? I never prepare a set because I play music for the people so my ¨playlist¨ depends on who is in the bar that night, the idea is that everyone has a good time, shakes their body and especially to make them smile. Yes, I do take requests, if I have song I will find the right moment to play it. fact magazine

• MUSIC What are the three best elements about being a DJ? Making people happy, changing a bad day or getting over a breakup through the music. Creating memories that last forever. Having the opportunity of travelling, meeting people, experiencing different cultures, and trying new food. Tell us more about your DJ’ing background – where else have you played and what has been your most memorable moment in this profession? My most memorable moment was doing the opening show for Major Lazer in Venezuela and have had the opportunity to talk to my idol Diplo, that was definitely the best moment of my life because Diplo was the artist that inspired me to became a DJ. Listening to his voice and his advice was like being in heaven. Do you have any advice or tips for young, budding DJs? Believe in yourself, always be grateful and never stop dreaming because dreams do come true, you just have to go for it! What are some of your future goals within the DJ’ing industry? My main goal is to become a music producer, learn a few more tricks and get better on my scratching technique. ✤

BIG SCREEN First Man WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

A riveting look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, the film follows the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon. Focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969, the film delves deeper into the event that changed the world.

DIRECTOR: Damien Chazelle CAST: Ryan Gosling, Jason Clarke, Claire Fox

WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING?

First Man offers a brand new take on the most defining moment for America. Damien Chazelle’s spectacular and enthralling drama offers an intelligent treatment of the revolutionary event. For a story that’s been told so many times before, Chazelle’s narrative is as gritty as ever and is entrenched in realism. Based on the book by James R. Hansen, the film explores the sacrifices and the cost on Armstrong and the nation of one of the most dangerous missions in history. The visceral, first-person account restricts the action almost entirely to the point of view of the astronauts, giving you a never before seen glimpse into everything the men experience. From the volatile opening sequence to the shards of glass looming up out of cramped windows, this is as real as it gets. Redefining what space travel is, First Man takes your imagination for a ride while capturing what the stakes were. And they were pretty high.

ROCK

Trench

By Twenty One Pilots

Veering in opposite directions, the band’s upcoming fifth LP is a concept album that aims to tell a number of stories. Following their Grammy-winning 2015 album, Blurryface, this newest release takes their musical genius to a whole new level. Featuring a distorted bass guitar, crisp drumming and dark washes of synth, Jumpsuit is a surprising departure from their usual upbeat pop sound. But as the atmospheric single goes into the bridge, there is a change of pace followed by a softer sound, which might be more familiar to long-time fans. A mesmerising combination of different kinds of mediums, the album brings together various characters, themes and stories like never before. Featuring a lighter, more upbeat vibe, Nico and the Niners alternates between rapping and singing along with rippling synths, programmed kick-drums and down-pitched vocals. The track continues the reggae theme of some of their previous songs with clear and expressive vocals, making it another compelling single from the band. Following a brand new theme and concept, Trench showcases Twenty One Pilots in a whole new light - and we’re enjoying it.

Wax

By KT Tunstall Evoking the elements of spirit, body and mind, KT Tunstall’s second offering of her KIN trilogy is finally here and we have a lot of feelings! Focusing on the body and our complex relationship with physicality, Wax is all about human-ness, which we often dismiss as flaws. Wanting to escape the madness of the world, bad relationships and wanting to start over, River talks about emancipation through nature. Putting KT’s stunning vocals centre stage, the inspirational, emotionally charged song builds with rocking, rhythmic guitar textures and an infectious chorus. Powerfully delivering on the concept of the album, the subject matter beautifully touches on salvation, sin and being saved. Written by KT herself and Martin Terefe, the song represents the grit, dirt and physicality of the overall album. An electric guitar record about the physical and the obstacles of that, the record is heartfelt and relatable and is packed with uplifting energy.

The land of glamour and style, New York City is the fashion haven Bill Cunningham had always dreamt of. Growing up in an Irish suburb of Boston, spending his evenings after school in the city’s chicest boutiques and secretly dressing up in his sister’s clothes. Without any support from his family, he decided to drop out of Harvard and fight tooth-and-nail to pursue his one true love - fashion. A true original, the book is great inspiration for following your dreams and passion.

he unassuming entrance and the traditional heritage style architecture brilliantly conceals the delights which lie within. Just as the original Qatari residences would have, Souq Al Wakra Hotel hides an abundance of luxuriant, tranquil, ornate spaces waiting to be discovered. The most unique and thoroughly overwhelming aspect of the hotel would have to be the abundance of lobby areas which are all individual and exquisitely styled. The North Lobby with marble floors and elegant illumination is accessed through huge carved wooden doors. This creates such a sense of grandeur and pays homage to the original use of the space. The exposed beamed ceilings with dark, irregular poles is a stark contrast to the contemporary circular leather seating, vivid colour scheme and opulent choice of fabrics. To the south the lobby area is more traditional with tessellated patterns running through all elements. The highlight is the tessellated lighting around the archways and the subdued glow created throughout. Chandeliers and orbs crafted from glass provide a fusion of ancient and modern. The skylight lobby is worth visiting the hotel alone. The ceiling is designed to look completely exposed to the elements revealing a midnight blue sky. Traditional lanterns hang, in abundance, from the mock canopy above and irregular beams protrude from the walls as they would have originally. Columns are kissed with delicate light which streams from up and down lighters. The whole space, every element gives the illusion of being open to the elements. Souq Al Wakra prides itself upon its diverse dining concepts both in terms of the menu choices and the staging within each restaurant area. Jarnen and its vast terrace area affords diners the opportunity to take in the stunning gulf sunsets with the tones and colours of this spectacle reflected in the colour scheme. Vivid corals, blues and sandy tones along with traditional woodwork combine to make both an elegant and relaxed setting. The restaurant specialises in International Cuisine. In addition Markhan offers an Arabic fusion lounge with panoramic views of the sea and also the stunning sunsets. The setting is more contemporary with azure blues providing a contrast against dark woods. Elegant 44

crockery and crisply folded napkins illustrate the high end vibe here at Markhan. The majalis area offers a Bedouin experience on breath taking levels. Sunken seating accessed by an illuminated staircase inside a tented canopy. The choice of bold colours and patterns is an absolute triumph. Statement pieces such as copper, silver and pewter coffee pots and stunted tables brimming in a bounteous selection of fresh fruit make this area a feast for the senses. My dining experience was a combination of locally sourced produce, all from nearby markets, the highlight being an assiette of seafood and grilled to order barbecue meats all seasoned delicately and charred expertly. The setting and ambience was thoroughly Qatari but the bountiful variety of Mediterranean flavours highlighted the fact that the hotel embraces the best of everything from around the globe. The hotel is a network of interconnected buildings punctuated with walkways and maze like paths which merge into secluded courtyards. The guest rooms and suites either open out onto these courtyards or have impressive sea views.

fact magazine

45

Both are equally impressive and unique in their own way. The Superior room has facilities and décor which are second to none, yet the layout is distinctly homely with interconnecting rooms as would have been the case in the heritage homes. The colour scheme of crisp white sheets with turquoise accents injects modernity into a traditional setting. The Sea View Rooms are drenched in light with three picture windows affording guests views of the gulf from all angles. To take the Al Wakra experience up a notch then choosing to base your stay in one of the Suites with their fresh, clean sophisticated vibrance is a must. The layout is, as expected, ingrained with Arabic charm but on-trend furniture, bold use of fabrics, shades and tones infuses extant urbanity. An absolute triumph of modish design. Although the hotel is already a haven of tranquillity and calm guests may wish to take relaxation to a hedonistic level in the hotel spa. The courtyard boasts a star shaped water feature and shade giving pagoda perfect for post treatment requiescence. The tantalising facial treatment and tranquilizing back and foot massages were fabulous however the additional features such as the hydro pool and Jacuzzi Spa lift the experience beyond that of a standard hotel Spa. Whether you choose to relax on the terrace with it’s loungers and sofas hugging the contours of the expanse of water, peppered with fountains or indulge in both the delectable cuisine and views from one of the restaurants you can not fail to fall in love with this hidden gem. Unassuming luxury that suits every mode and manner of guest. It’s so good in fact that preferably we would be keeping it to ourselves as opposed to sharing it with the world! ✤ GO: CALL 4428 7888 FOR RESERVATIONS AND MORE INFORMATION. 46

T

he staff at Crowne Plaza Doha – The Business Park are warm, dedicated and friendly. From the moment I arrived, my expectations of customer service were exceeded as staff clambered to take my bags and the front of house crew checked me in smoothly and swiftly. I was shown to a spacious room and found chocolate encased dates - quite possibly the best dates I’ve ever had. My room was modern and spacious, clean and homely. All amenities are provided from tea and coffee making facilities to bathrobe, slippers and ironing board. The rooms have bath tubs which is a big plus for me and big wide windows looking out onto the local neighbourhood. The spa and gym facilities are hidden away on the top floor. You can be forgiven for feeling like you’re on a roundabout in this hotel. Walking around the floors can involve, well, quite literally going around in circles! The gym is modestly sized and well equipped with a range of the latest TechnoGym equipment and some pretty impressive units for abs, quad and strength workout. We were there at the weekend, and even then, it did not feel full. My impression was that this hotel manages to quite successfully appeal to both business travellers, leisure tourists and families on staycation. This was evident from who we saw in the international all-day dining venue, Aramede, which offered a big breakfast buffet in the base of the building, allowing you to wander around the roundabout buffet of options that included fresh fruit, low calorie pastries, hot Arabic, Indian

and Western breakfast items as well as a live eggs station. A delicious way to start your day! The best place to spend the day is on the highest level where you’ll find the pool deck. The pool is slim but long allowing for the choice of doing lengths or lazy lounging. The pool bar, Liquidity, offers all day snacks and refreshments. There is also a large jacuzzi tub letting you lie in the sun while your back is pummelled by jets of hot water. The spa is worth a mention too. I tried out the one-hour full body massage but there are a range of treatments and the facilities are clean, modern and very comfortable. My therapist, Arun, was thorough in a pre-treatment briefing, assessing my pressure points and preferences before commencing a very relaxing and de-stressing massage with oils in a calm environment with chilled-out music and soft scents. There are plenty of recreation spaces and multiple dining options. They are all generally pretty relaxed in vibe too. Misturado is a sports bar showing all the main games and serve some tasty light bites like spicy chicken wings, salmon tacos and chicken quesadillas. Live music is sometimes performed there and the place is very popular in the early evening. If you’re hungry and keen to really eat, then the place to go is Rodizio which is a Brazilian churrascaria. Tender cuts of steak are carved off skewers with unlimited serving. You actually get a traffic light style card with red on one side and green on the other so the waiters know to keep on shaving off meat for you if your card has the green side faced up but will leave you alone and let you breathe if it is red side up! fact magazine

On my last day, I tried out the business lunch in the Arabic lounge, Arguelina. It is described as a contemporary Arabic lounge with a wide array of shisha flavours. It is an excellent social space for groups, families or couples. There is a sliding roof that was on when I was there on a particularly hot and humid day but during cooler spells, it slides back to let customers relax with food and shisha al fresco. The business lunch that I tried was actually a very affordable, delicious and not cumbersome proposition. A mixed mezze is served comprising hummus, Baba ghanoush, kibbeh and fatayeh. This is followed by a choice of the chargrilled chicken wrap or the house burger. A choice of desserts is available too. Our stay at Crowne Plaza Doha – The Business Park was a pleasant surprise. For couples, families and even solo travellers, this hotel has something for everyone! ✤ 52

nitial impressions are key. Passing through the old city area and past palace gardens filled with orange trees, we arrive at the sweeping driveway leading up to the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech just 15 minutes after leaving the airport. The hotel entrance is marked by a large pool of water, in the middle of which stands a lone gracious tree. This theme of water continues into the monochromatic lobby, where striking black and white portraits of Berber women stare down from above, while curtains billow and the scent of oud makes for a sensuous first impression. This being Mandarin Oriental, there is no wait to check-in. Instead we’re invited out onto the terrace to sip on traditional Moroccan mint tea which is poured with such showmanship, as the check-in formalities are completed. Once refreshed we board a buggy to transport us to our Mandarin Oriental Pool Villa. Despite seeing images of the property online before visiting, nothing could’ve prepared us for one of Mandarin Oriental Marrakech’s 54 private villas. For what lies behind a pair of large double doors, leaves us holding our breath as we await the big reveal. THE VILLA Behind the intricately carved doors lies the Mandarin Pool Villa, an easy contender for the most luxurious of hotel villas. Fully enclosed by a flower strewn stone wall that encompasses the space for total privacy, we enter into a courtyard that surrounds a private pool complete with jacuzzi. Resulting in an outside space that is both functional and relaxing. Aside from the plethora of seating options (dining table, daybeds and cushioned majlis) guests will discover a small garden dotted with fruit trees that contains an outdoor shower, alongside a fireplace and charming outside kitchen where you can prepare your own Moroccan mint tea, or have the culinary team prepare something for you. The villa takes on a horseshoe shape that loops around the private pool and with much of the structure constructed from glass; the space is flooded in natural light. Designed as mini riads, at the back lies the bedroom where the exceptionally comfortable king bed sits upon a raised podium and the entire room can be controlled at the touch of a button lights, curtains and even a television that pops out from the footboard of the bed! A marble-clad bathroom helps to promote a sense of serenity and features a walk-in dressing room, double vanities, a freestanding tub and your very own steam room. Embracing local culture is part of the Mandarin Oriental concept and we truly appreciated the attention to detail, with black soap, local Nectarome products and scouring mitts provided in the steam room, for guests to partake in their own private hammam. Soft furnishings abound in the living area, home to a mini bar, writing desk and Apple television. The open plan nature of the villa (which can be separated via doors) adds appeal and a sense of freedom to the beautifully decorated space which takes on a romantic feel once the evening turn down service is complete and the villa is lit by candlelight.

THE GROUNDS Escape and relaxation form the core of the Mandarin Oriental experience and although the villas all feature private swimming pools, the resort has an impressive communal pool set against the external facade of the hotel building and flanked with water filled lagoons. Beneath the trees guests are invited to fine seclusion in hammocks or daybeds or to indulge in a cocktail or light snack at the Pool Garden. The ethos behind the Mandarin Oriental brand is the belief that their properties are more than just hotels. Each stay offers an experience where guests are invited to embrace the local culture and become immersed in the unique qualities of each destination. The kids’ club is a perfect example, representing a technology free zone (you won’t find movies or video games present) where children are instead taught Berber techniques for carpet weaving, jewellery making, and Moroccan cookery lessons, alongside the likes of yoga and creative play. The kids’ club is nestled deep within the grounds of the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech, surrounded by olive trees and the on site farm. From which many of the organic ingredients used in the preparation of dishes at traditional Moroccan restaurant Mes’Lalla derive from. THE SPA Presenting signature treatments for which the Mandarin Oriental brand is renowned in addition to Moroccan specialties such as hammam, the spa at Mandarin Oriental Marrakech spans an impressive 1,800sqm. Designed by French duo Gilles & Boissier in Andalusian style, the terracotta archways and high ceilings of the spa are an Instagrammer’s dream and with an indoor pool, hammam and six spa suites (including one for couples). Each of the spa suites is named after one of the elements and the names are etched into the walls using traditional Berber fonts. The spacious spa suites include heated massage beds and a small garden for post-treatment relaxation. The spa team actively encourages visitors to disconnect from technology and embrace mindfulness via the use of adult colouring books. A 70sqm indoor pool, yoga studio and state of the art gymnasium can also be found to the rear of the spa. Featuring the latest technology, business travellers in particular will appreciate the option of connecting their devices to the cardiovascular equipment, meaning that they never miss an email, even when working out. FINE FOOD The dining options at Mandarin Oriental Marrakech are particularly strong, sitting well within the luxury confines of the property. Mes’Lalla represents an alternative take on the all day dining with its breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The pleasant dining room decked out in Berber textiles is surpassed by the outside terrace overlooking the water gardens and swimming pool. This is where Executive Chef Salim Ait Ezzine utilises seasonal produce grown at the on site farm to bring life to his menu of Mediterranean and Moroccan classics, via exquisite plating and bold flavours. Situated in the West Wing, Ling Ling is a nightlife concept from the Hakkasan group offering Cantonese-inspired small plates in combination with the finest mixology. The trendy environment promotes a party atmosphere that is creating quite a stir in the Moroccan capital. Celebrating the beauty of Moroccan Berber heritage, the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech is a remarkable property ideal for those is search of exquisite luxury and seclusion while still being close to the city. Marking the Mandarin Oriental group’s debut on the African continent, this specific

property has set the bar particularly high as a resort at the forefront of Morocco’s luxury market. Nothing is too much for the Mandarin Oriental team. Want to dine at Ling Ling but don’t want to leave the villa? Fear not, for the chef will come to you! Guests’ needs are constantly anticipated and then exceeded. This is the place to really get away from it all.

rriving at Don Totu Storica in the tiny town of San Cassiano, Puglia you’ll find a large door of an old stone building. The entry is small and unassuming and what lies behind is a total surprise. This 18th century palazzo boasts some of the most secluded grounds and gardens in the region. It comes as no surprise that this boutique hotel hosts many repeat guests with its super elegant yet understated vibe and you can see how it feels like a home away from home - totally private and relaxing. The hotel is decorated in muted tones with thoughtful accents such as antique mirrors, Puglian ceramics and large art deco chandeliers. There is a beautiful sitting room where guests can play chess or enjoy a drink. We are shown the large kitchen where you are welcome to help yourself to homemade snacks that are changed up daily as well as juices and soft drinks. Off the kitchen is the beautiful courtyard where breakfast is served daily surrounded by olive trees, and stone staircases. We continue the tour off the side of the courtyard to find a huge garden with a swimming pool. You’ll find everything from pine trees to white roses and loads of cactus, which Puglia is known for. How this space is even possible is a total surprise and it’s not what you’d expect after entering the small street front entrance. The garden leads onto the pool area which is simply stunning with a pergola at the end that is decorated in art deco furniture in bold colours. Don Tuto has only six rooms which adds to the boutique feel of the property and makes it feel exclusive and peaceful. It’s been so thoughtfully decorated and the building itself adds so much to the ambience with its stone ceilings, quiet corners, tranquil garden areas, small alcoves and rooftop terraces. There are gorgeous touches to the furniture and decoration with shells, lamps, more Puglian ceramics and lots of stone accents. fact magazine

The Don Totu Suite off the library has a beautiful bathroom with a free-standing bath and double vanity, and it also has a gorgeous terrace accessed by a tiny stone staircase. The other rooms are all equally beautiful and there is also a family room with two single beds. The rooms were built in keeping with the original structure and materials. They are all different and show great taste in the choice of decor, with canopy beds, ceramics and unique mirrors and chandeliers. Breakfast here is a real delight eaten under the stunning courtyard. There is a sensational spread of fresh fruit, local cakes and brioches, sliced cold cuts of meat, and freshly baked bread and eggs made to order. The coffee is excellent as it should be in Italy and they’ll whip you up a freshly squeezed juice of your choice. If you order lunch in the morning they will serve it to you in the courtyard or better yet, by the pool. The staff will also serve you a homemade gelato at the pool round 3pm to satisfy any sweet cravings. Aperitivo hour is a highlight, with Aperol Spritz served up with a twist of orange, or an Italian style Gin & Tonic should that take your fancy. You can also sign up for a cooking class which is fabulous and shows you how to make pasta from scratch and you can learn more about the local wines that are well worth a try. Dinner is best eaten at the surrounding towns and the excellent staff will make any bookings for you. Horse riding and vespa tours can also be arranged and are an absolute must out. You can also start your morning with a yoga class. This hotel is truly something unique and certainly magical. It manages to hit the mark with outstanding hospitality paired with luxury. ✤

A CONTEMPORARY VISION FOR FERRARI The GTC4Lusso and The GTC4Lusso T are beautiful, illustrious four-seater vehicles, celebrating the heritage of Ferrari…

T

he new Ferrari GTC4Lusso is Maranello’s latest interpretation of the four-seater concept, which combines extraordinary performance in all driving conditions with sporty elegance and luxurious comfort for both driver and passengers alike. The GTC4Lusso’s name references several illustrious predecessors, not least the 330 GTC or its 2+2 sister model, the 330 GT, as well as the 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, which married extreme performance with stylish design and sophisticated materials and craftsmanship. It follows in the footsteps of the FF, the first ever Ferrari you could drive on rough terrain or take up mountains for a ski trip thanks to its predictive all-wheel drive system, and continues the lineage of Ferrari’s spacious 2+2 models that began with the 1948 166 Inter. Ferrari has updated the grand touring FF with a stunning new interior, sharper exterior styling, improved engine and handling and a brand new name that reflects the luxury that epitomises Ferraris’ flagship models. Here we take a moment to reflect on the most significant models that have shaped the history of Ferrari’s V12 and V8 engined four-seaters. Along with a new name, Ferrari has given the GTC4Lusso updated lines, a new interior, and a touch more horsepower from its V12 engine. The performance displays the thrilling Ferrari soundtrack, with an increased power output from 651 horsepower to 680 ponies. This Italian horsepower allows the GTC4Lusso to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds on the way to its 333 km/h top speed. Importantly, the all-wheel drive Ferrari now has fourwheel steering similar to that found in the F12 TDF. Allowing all four wheels to steer and propel the car forward makes the car turn as fast as it can accelerate. The GTC4Lusso sports the latest evolution of the naturallyaspirated Ferrari GT V12 that melds incredible power with 68

efficiency and provides a soundtrack which is thrilling in performance driving, yet discreet and harmonious in normal touring conditions, whether city, mountain or desert. The Ferrari GTC4Lusso T; the first four-seater in Prancing Horse history to sport a V8 turbo engine, hailing a whole new Ferrari GT concept. The model is aimed at owners seeking a car that is sporty and versatile but also perfect for frequent driving. Ferrari has given the GTC4Lusso T a 3.9-litre V8 turbo; the latest evolution to emerge from the engine family named overall “2016 International Engine of the Year”. The car’s maximum power output is 610 cv at 7,500 rpm while maximum torque of 760 Nm is available at between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm. This Italian horsepower allows the GTC4Lusso T to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds on the way to its 320 km/h top speed. The V8 turbo’s signature characteristics suit day-to-day driving in urban contexts: a rich powerful soundtrack at high speeds that becomes more muted at lower speeds, nimbleness and responsiveness courtesy of versatile, modular torque delivery and, last but not least, an excellent range. The GTC4Lusso and The GTC4Lusso T. This is the Ferrari DNA. ✤

et’s talk food. There are hot and cold starters to choose from at Astor Grill. From the cold options, I tried the heirloom tomatoes. This sounds rather basic perhaps and I wouldn’t normally think to pick it but when the waiter brought it out and I tucked in, I realised that this chef knows how to kick in a delicate but rich key ingredient that provides a rather refreshing and stunning start. That special something in this surprising dish was aged goats cheese and then throw in some basil oil and walnut grassini and we are off and running with excited taste buds. Also, we tried the dry cecina beef, excellently paired with manchego cheese and good old-fashioned pickled onions. Another fabulous dish. All warm appetisers that we try are seafood. You will not be disappointed by the sea scallops which are seared with salted butter and celeriac. The same can be said for the charred octopus with smoked paprika and aioli – a divine and elegant dish that gourmands will appreciate. There are a selection of main courses including lobster, sea bass and lamb but one treat that Astor Grill is proud of that will appeal to vegetarians too, is the barbecued cauliflower cooked with spiced tahini, lemon, chive and garlic. Head Chef James was telling us that the kitchen has a giant Josper grill and they have taken to using it for all sorts of things rather than just meats – and why not? If it produces a dish of this calibre then it’s a powerful thing. The menu has a small section called ‘low and slow’ and you can easily guess why. We had the pleasure of tasting the waygu beef ribs which had been slow cooked for 48 hours, smoked, and served with artichoke and truffle potato. If you only have appetite for one dish on a visit to Astor Grill, please make it this one. Incredible flavours that will blow you away! A steak lover does not go to a steak house and not eat steak so let me say something about that. Maturity is a key watchword here as far as the meat is concerned. All beef is stored in a maturation refrigerator for 21 days 84

to shed liquid and dry for what they describe as the perfect balance of taste and tenderness. There are two options; U.S. Angus or a Waygu marble. I tried both and all I can say is WOW! Rich in flavour and as tender as butter, this is what people dream about when they think of the perfect steak! I really didn’t expect a chef who can nail a steak that well to also be so on point with desserts – but I was wrong! The sweets were exceptionally good. He can do a mean New York cheesecake with berries. Chocolate freaks will go wild for the lava cake with hazelnut ice

cream and I also tried something without knowing its name and said: this tastes like a pina colada! And that’s actually what it was called; coconut ice cream with a maple glaze. Divine! The whole vibe of the place is mood lit, and ultra edgy and modern in design. There is even a party room for birthdays and special occasions that can hold about a dozen people. The Astor Grill has been closed through the summer, tweaking and redesigning the menu. I’m happy to say that its comeback has been strong – fantastic food results team! ✤

Three Sixty at The Torch Doha is a firm favourite for a true fine dining experience. It’s also situated at the top of the country’s tallest tower providing panoramic views across the city. I

t really doesn’t matter where you sit in Three Sixty on The Torch’s 47th floor because the venue rotates around 360 degrees over the course of 90 minutes so you’ll be able to take in everything. As it revolves around 360 degrees we were able to take in incredible birds eye views of Hamad Aquatic Centre, Aspire Park, Khalifa stadium and Villagio Mall as well as the vast rowing lake and far off views of the Doha skyline. The chef and his team have been busily refreshing the menu over the summer and they have produced some interesting and innovative results. We started our visit with a baked block of feta cheese with cherry tomatoes and peppers, topped with oregano and olive oil. An unusual way of prepping a cheese dish but it was exquisite – we’re on board with this method. Another excellent appetiser addition on offer is the pan seared shrimps salad which is a mixed green salad with asparagus, artichokes, cherry tomatoes and shallots, dressed in a ginger lemon sauce. It is a cold starter but a very refreshing option. I’m not usually one to choose soup but I must commend the roasted plum tomato soup. The plums are slowly roasted and the flavour is complimented beautifully by a tomato jam and basil caviar. Ribs were a great forte in the Torch kitchen. The new barbecue back ribs are slow cooked on the bone with grilled pineapple, steak cut potatoes and homemade barbecue sauce – it’s a meat feast fit for royalty. An Arabic influence has arrived with their Mediterranean grill. Delicious skewers of shish tawook and Turkish kebab are presented with fat homemade fries or saffron rice and garlic sauce. The meat is succulent and the meal is homely - perfect! Innovative and very delicate desserts have passed the taste test and are being served up now. The apple is a white chocolate parfait with apple compote, topped with vanilla crumble and forest berries. The chocolate entremet is a creamy delicacy with soft chocolate and fresh berries, served with mint ice cream. A perfect mouth cleanser at the end of a wonderful dining experience! One of the things that I love about eating at Three Sixty is the attention to detail, the delicate flavours and the fact that you leave without feeling full or heavy in the stomach. The dishes are carefully calibrated to leave you 88

izzling meats, live sporting events, arcade games and huge diner style booths greet you as you walk into Claw BBQ for an all around friendly American dining experience. As soon as I sat down I was distracted by the retro style arcade gaming machines! The bar is huge and I could instantly tell that it was the kind of place that took their mixology very seriously! My visit took me back to the days when I lived in New York where I tried hot buffalo wings for the first time and all star American burgers; extremely meaty, huge portions and packed with a lot of flavour! If you are looking for something to please the whole family which is fun and interactive from the venue to the menu then look no further than Claw! For our appetisers we had the ‘Nacho Libre’ which is best described as a mountain of loaded nachos topped with ‘lone star beef chilli’, salsa, jalapenos, and the most delicious guacamole! I think I would have been pretty full from eating that dish alone, but, it’s a perfect sharer! My friend and I had the most delicious drinks to start with I had their piña colada which was sweet and fruity whereas my friend (with opposing taste buds) enjoyed the virgin mojito that was addictively sour from the bountiful dose of lime! A bucket of the ‘Baja King Crab’ was served at our table and its grandeur certainly allowed it to be a feast for the eyes, accompanied by some seasoned corn on the cob and spicy french fries. It is truly a unique experience where you are provided with an apron, gloves and tools to crack open your own crab, providing an interactive yet entertaining dinner for your whole group to enjoy. It got pretty messy but it was totally worth it when we were able to indulge in the delicious crab meat! I also savoured more from their mixologist sampling their delicious Bacardi and passion fruit infused Zombie cocktail which came in an oh-so-instagrammable tiki style glass! We also filled our boots with the BBQ beef short ribs which were cooked so slowly, the meat was glazed in the sauce and came off the bone effortlessly. The garlic mashed potatoes which the ribs were served with was so moreish that I would definitely select it as my side dish the next time that I visit - I’m still pining after it! We were served the Claw speciality drink - the XXrita which was served in a giant margarita glass with an upside down DOS slowly mixing itself into the margarita! This is a really fun cocktail to try out and I recommend it with a large group of friends! By now we were feeling pretty full but we just had to try the desserts so of course we ordered two, but, when they arrived we were so shocked to see how big the portions were. In true American style we were served a deep filled American apple crumble with a huge dollop of vanilla ice cream, accompanied with an iron skillet baked giant chocolate chip cookie served in the pan with an additional three scoops of ice cream!

Unfortunately we never had a chance to play on the arcade games on account of having too much fun on our table, but, we will do on our next visit. The retro games ramped up the nostalgic levels and the staff made sure that every sports fan was accommodated for with the latest sports being displayed on their multitude of TV screens around the bar. A

fter a hectic month with busy social schedules and work appointments, I was looking forward to a relaxation day to recharge and reenergise, so I checked myself in at The Ritz-Carlton Doha for a day of pampering. I started a day of leisure with a BODYPUMP class held in the studio room. BODYPUMP is a barbell workout for anyone looking to get lean, toned and fit, fast. Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BODYPUMP gives you a total body workout. The Instructor coached me through the moves and techniques pumping out encouragement, motivation and great music. I left the class feeling challenged and motivated, ready to enjoy some chilled out me-time by the pool. The pool area is stunning, it’s like an oasis. You can find private spaces in the pool garden with sun lounges, the perfect set up to enjoy a good book. The aqua facilities are superb; aside from the outdoor pool with swim-up bar, there is an indoor Olympic pool if you want to do some laps, there are also two whirlpools (hot and cold), sauna and steam room, and changing rooms with showers adjacent to the indoor pool. The hotel has recently opened the Ritz-Carlton Beach, so I venture onto this little haven, the beach is set on its own private island adjacent to the hotel. It offers the perfect escape, with sun loungers overlooking the turquoise blue waters of the Arabian Gulf. The restaurant and menu offers light bites while the drink list

features refreshing classics. You can explore the beauty of the area with an afternoon of fishing, a diving trip on the coast, sunset yoga classes, a game of volleyball or simply by relaxing on a lounger (that was my personal choice). After a soothing morning, I went to recharge and replenish at the Ritz-Carlton Spa. Attention to detail here is first class – from the choices of luxury skincare products like ESPA to the perfectly designed treatment rooms. I discover the art of facial and more at the ultra-serene Spa with a unique therapy that will have you putting your best face forward: the Ultimate Radiance & Renewal Facial. My therapist Aom guides me to a private spa room, where a sliding wooded door opens to a lush little retreat. For the uninitiated, ESPA products focus on creating natural skincare that could deliver both instant benefits and also work beneath the skins surface to protect the long-term health and beauty of the skin. My therapist begins with a deep cleanse using a nourishing cleansing balm followed by a refining skin polish exfoliator, and a refreshing hydrating toner. Then she gently applies the skin radiance mask. While the masks set, she treats me to an arm, neck, shoulder and décolletage massage. Bliss! Afterwards, she cleanses my face with a hot towel and gives me an utterly divine age-defying crystal massage. She then applies another lift and firm mask that leaves my skin dewy and quenched. While the second mask sets, Aom gives me a lulling scalp massage that quickly leaves me napping. The facial treatment ends with a final round of moisturising cream and oil for my eyelids and lips. Afterwards my skin is glowing and feels radiant and the result lasts well into the week, minimising my need for foundation or concealer. Next time you’re on the hunt for a dose of youthfulness for your skin, look no further that the Spa at Ritz-Carlton Doha. ✤

service, attention to detail and thoughtful guest experiences, and we attribute these to our culture. I think our success in creating an exceptional service culture, which sees our guests coming back to our hotel, extends from the empowerment of our teams. As a company, we remain focused on the guest experience and our employees are ambassadors for that vision. Share with us some of your favourite hotspots in Doha and why... I’m a sport enthusiast, I love outdoor activities and I think sport is a big part of local culture. I love exploring Qatar’s alluring desert, sand boarding or kite

surfing at in-Land Sea. On my day off, I like to go to Aspire sport complex, either to run or play basketball in their stadium. What are some of your future goals with the hotel? Our hotel will undergo an extensive renovation. From redefining our rooms and suites, to new restaurant concepts, I am very excited about it. We are also constantly updating our food and beverage offerings in an effort to continue to be a leader in innovation, keeping our guests highly engaged and exceeding their expectations.
