e all know that in recent years Qatar has become a hotbed of cultural development, a proud destination boasting world-renowned

facilities

and venues

from Qatar Museum of Islamic Art to Katara Cultural Village and from amazing displays from international

creatives at Art 29 at W Doha Hotel and Residences to local cafés hosting up-and-coming artists allowing them public exposure. So, this month, we’ve taken an in-depth look at what’s available across the country and even we were surprised to find the huge variety of great places to visit, such as the Neolithic carvings at Al Jassasiya and an area that was a production site for dye in the Kassite Period. We’ve upped our gourmet game with more reviews than ever. Our lucky staff got to try a new venue, a brunch, a new menu and a meaty feast. They had a great time and I promise I wasn’t jealous at all. Asad also checked out a guys’ treat at The Barber Shop at Four Seasons Hotel Doha and he was very impressed. The Ritz-Carlton, Doha is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, so make sure to cast your eye over our 20 facts about the iconic property. And, for other interesting reading, we have our usual roundups of news from the worlds of music, books and films; a look at the latest men’s fashion; and beauty products for both guys and girls. I hope you enjoy reading this month’s issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

CREATING HISTORY WITH SUSTAINABILITY Qatar 2022 will be the first carbon-neutral FIFA World Cup in the history of the event. When Qatar was awarded the right to stage the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world, it not only committed to organising an amazing tournament – but also a mega-event delivered in a sustainable manner. In January 2020, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), FIFA and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22) published the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Sustainability Strategy. It was the first such strategy to be planned and delivered jointly by FIFA, the host country and local organisers. Part of the strategy includes the delivery of the first carbonneutral FIFA World Cup in the history of the event. To achieve this, all infrastructure projects – including the eight stadiums that will be used for Qatar 2022 – must meet stringent sustainability benchmarks. “From the beginning, our preparation efforts for Qatar 2022 have been undertaken with the goal of building a sustainable and lasting legacy,” said Engineer Abdulrahman al-Muftah, the SC's Sustainability and Environment Expert. “The sustainability initiatives we have implemented in our projects contribute to Qatar National Vision 2030 and will also have a positive impact on the way future world cups and other large-scale sporting events are organised around the world.” Many of the measures taken to reduce carbon emissions are centred around the compact nature of the tournament. Fans, players and officials will fly into one airport and stay in one set of accommodation during the tournament. With the longest distance between stadiums just 75km, fans will have the opportunity to attend at least two matches in a single day during 10

fact magazine

the group stage, thanks to five of the stadiums being connected to the Doha Metro and the other three accessible by connecting bus services. The SC has also worked with the hotel sector in Qatar to encourage green practices to reduce carbon emissions from accommodation. The compact nature of Qatar 2022 will not only provide convenience for fans and an optimal performance environment for participating teams, but will also eliminate the carbon footprint of domestic air travel that fans, players and officials were required to do to attend matches in previous world cups. Reducing carbon emissions was also factored into the building of Qatar 2022 venues. Careful consideration was given during the design and construction of the stadiums for lower energy and water consumption, the reusing and recycling of water and materials wherever possible, highly efficient cooling systems, the use of renewable energy for lighting in some stadiums, creating designs that allow for natural light, native trees and plants in stadium parklands, and efficient waste management strategies. Many of the stadiums have exceeded industry ratings by implementing non-mandated requirements for sustainability. Another key component to achieving carbon-neutrality will be the use of solar energy to help power Qatar during the tournament. ✤

DESIGNING TO INSPIRE Qatari architect Ibrahim M. Jaidah discusses the design journey for the sixth FIFA World Cup 2022 venue, Al Thumama Stadium, to be unveiled by the SC the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy. What started as a sketch for a design competition now stands as an architectural gem ready to host the world’s best footballers in 2022. The stunning Al Thumama Stadium will be inaugurated on October 22, ahead of the Amir Cup Final between Al Sadd and Al Rayyan. Ibrahim M. Jaidah, CEO and Chief Architect of Arab Engineering Bureau, the person behind the design of the stadium, explained that architects around the world were invited to submit designs inspired by the ‘gahfiya’ – a traditional headpiece worn by men across the Arab world – for a new stadium to be used during the FIFA World Cup 2022. He recalls heading to the Old Souq – a traditional marketplace in Qatar – for inspiration prior to putting his ideas on paper. “I remember that night, I got my hands on all types of gahfiyas in order to study the different patterns on each. I always wore it as a child, however I didn't expect to see all the different shapes and the depth of their designs,” he says. The creative process led to many sleepless nights. He adds: “I used to wake up in the middle of the night to examine the patterns on the different gahfiyas. I finally drew a rough sketch that I liked and told my engineers that this will be the design we are going with.” One of Jaidah’s main goals was to produce a design that resonated with people across the entire region. He says: “I had a feeling my competitors were going to take the original shape 16

fact magazine

and completely modernise it; removing its traditional essence and making it look nothing like a gahfiya. I wanted to ensure my design was modern but, at the same time, I didn’t want to strip from it its traditional identity. Preserving local identity and heritage was of paramount importance to me.” Al Thumama Stadium will host the 49th Amir Cup Final and become the latest FIFA World Cup 2022 venue to be unveiled, after Khalifa International, Al Janoub, Education City, Ahmad Bin Ali and Al Bayt. During Qatar 2022, Al Thumama will host eight matches up to the quarter-finals stage of the tournament. Ibrahim is confident that the venue will showcase local heritage and prove popular across Qatar and the region. “I still stand and try to take it all in. I am very proud to take part in my country’s success in hosting the biggest sporting event in the world,” he says. “My advice to young architects is to keep an eye an out for any opportunity that comes your way. This is a fulfilling field and nothing is more satisfying than seeing your design come to life.” ✤

W

ith everything opening up and 80% of the population of Qatar being vaccinated, there are festivals galore over the next few months. We take a look at some muchloved gems and put a spotlight on a few you may not be aware of. Whether you’re an aspiring designer, an entrepreneur or an artist — Qatar is the place to be, offering you a chance to showcase your talent and be a part of the creative industry and community. Write these down, pin them or keep them stored in your phone for when you need to revisit. So, which of the festivals, heritage spots or exhibitions are you visiting this season whilst sipping Qatar’s own karak on the go?

THE WONDERS OF ARCHITECTURE Civilizations leave behind everlasting resonances through their history via the mediums of art, knowledge or architecture. In an effort at immortality, culture allows us to assert our existence to the extent that we are not just ‘now’ but are – in essence – forever. As part of the cultural heritage, works of architecture speak to us, leaving a mark of existence and thought processes for the decades and people to come. It wouldn’t be erroneous to say that heritage is not just a collection of aged buildings encompassing ideas, conditions, customs or values of the society that created it in the past, but also comprehension of the people who use it now and recurrently modify it. There are several heritage sites in Qatar that offer a window into its past. From the Unesco site of Al Zubarah to the once-thriving dye industry at Jazirat Bin Ghannam Island. There are many interesting options to explore here. While Al Zubarah Fort, Unesco World Heritage Site, is a typical Arab fort with one-metre-thick walls housing residential palaces, mosques, courtyard houses, fishermen’s huts, streets, double defensive walls, a harbour, a canal, and cemeteries, Al Jassasiya, located in the north-east, is a rock carving site comprising a total of 874 carvings, known as ‘petroglyphs’, the earliest thought to date from Neolithic times. Jazirat Bin Ghannam is located inside Khor Al Shaqiq Bay and it’s believed that it was used as a production site for red-purple dye from shellfish during the Kassite Period.

22

fact magazine

Another heritage site, so well preserved, and right in the heart of the city near Souq Waqif, is Al Koot Fort — an imposing, white-stone square fort that was originally built in 1880 and then rebuilt in 1927 by Sheikh Abdulla bin Qassim al-Thani after the original fort was abandoned by the Ottomans. The fort features artefacts and artworks and houses authentic Qatari handicrafts, ornaments, original fishing equipment and boats, historic photos, and oil paintings. Apart from the heritage archeological sites, other architectural marvels worth visiting in Qatar include, Radwani House, Film City, the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha Fire Station, Katara Cultural Village, Souq Al Wakra, Qatar National Convention Centre, the National Museum of Qatar, Msheireb Museums and Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art. These places not only mesh contemporary and cultural heritage but also give a perspective to where culture is heading to.

VISUAL ARTS Today, more than ever, arts, painting and colours cannot be considered as a short-lived aesthetic expression. With the rise of social media, they have been transformed into some of the most dominant visual languages of our times. However, Qatar has long been the guardian of historical, artistic, archaeological and landscaping heritage, which is quite unique in the world and attracts more than two million tourists every year (pre-pandemic). There exist territories, knowledge, cultural attractions and creativity that make Qatar an extraordinarily extended circuit of beauty. In Qatar, it’s not just about classical painting, although the annual Qatar International Art Festival, now in its third year, attracts the interest of artists from across the world and featured 200 artists from 60 countries in its second edition; and Katara - The Cultural Village is one of the places to look out for when it comes to exhibitions and art space. But no, there is certainly more to the art scene here. Galleries abound, probably the most well-known is Art 29, located at W Doha Hotel and Residences, which usually hosts huge names. The exclusive testimonial videos of celebrities who attended Fashion Trust Arabia 2019 were also shot here. At the other end of the scale are an emerging band of thriving creatives who have set up their work in various studios across Doha and showcase their pieces in group exhibitions. Not least among these are the likes of Lina al-Ali, who decided to venture full time into showcasing her own work after teaching art for nearly two decades. There is also a wealth of new-breed artists coming out and exploring different mediums thanks to the Doha Fire Station, which offers an Artist in Residence programme (which runs from September to June every year) and a chance to be seen 24

and interact with visiting creatives whilst attending different workshops. The residency applications for this year closed long ago, but, for the next season, they’ll be open by December most likely and will close by mid next year. Many restaurants and cafes in Qatar are also shifting their focus towards art and now provide spaces for collaboration and exhibitions alike. Even Doha Festival City recently hosted an interactive exhibition where artists were selected and called to paint live on the first floor West South hallway before the final finished pieces were exhibited across the mall. And, let’s not forget the installations of public art by Qatar Museums across town. The works often attract international recognition, projecting a message about the diversity and spirit of our emerging cultural landscape. They help art lovers form connections across continents. The pieces include The Miraculous Journey by Damien Hirst, Smoke by Tony Smith, Perceval by Sarah Lucas, 7 by Richard Serra, Calligraffiti by El Seed, and Lusail Handball Installation amongst others.

KARAK Cuisine, a symbol of ethnicity, is a very important part of culture and is usually passed down from one generation to the next. It is also an expression of cultural identity. In a country like Qatar where many expatriates come together, they bring the food of their countries with them. Karak is one such beverage that has now been adopted into the roots of Qatari culture becoming a part of who we are. It has taken on iconic prestige as one of the Middle East’s most preferred beverages. But, as you sip your hot cup of tea, have you ever thought about how karak came to Qatar and the GCC? Masala chai or karak (for those who don’t know karak means hard or strong in Urdu and Hindi) is a South Asian speciality made from a mixture of dark tea, milk, sugar and cardamom — boiled together on a low flame. It is believed that karak came to Qatar with the Indian and South Asian diaspora who travelled to help build the infrastructure for the rapidly developing country in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, following the discovery of oil. They brought with them the recipe for the sweet, rich tea which provided a simple and familiar taste of home. After locals in Qatar got a taste of it, small changes were made and a new version was adopted across Qatari society. The regionally popular tea advanced into a drink that reflected local tastes by combining a spice common to both cultures, cardamom, and a mutual love for solid black tea. Today, a cup of karak tea in Qatar is available at the beep of a car horn. Karak is found at every café and restaurant, but for your perfect takeaway you should head to Chapati and Karak, Tea Time, Al Naimi Cafeteria, Karak Mudeer, Poori & Karak and Karak Maqnes.

FESTIVALS Over the past few years, Qatar has focussed on organising cultural events and festivals that attract tourists and people from different countries. Qatar National Convention Centre, Doha Exhibition & Convention Center along with Katara – the Cultural Village serve the purpose of hosting various events — from art exhibitions to musical concerts, fashion weeks and theatrical plays. Later this month Qatar National Tourism Council is set to organise Heya Fashion Week, with Shop Qatar concluding on October 10. The Ministry of Culture and Sports is bringing Qatari Songs Night Festival 2021 from October 10 to 11. Featuring Qatari musicians and songs, the festival aims to embody the artists’ connection with the national identity and culture. So, one can expect lots of oud, nay and qanun during the two-day event. Apart from that, next month we’ll also see the Ajyal Film Festival, Doha Art 2021 and the 11th edition of Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF) taking place. Last year, because of Covid, QIFF was held online with restaurants and hotels taking part in the festival via delivery app Talabat. This time, the festival will return to its physical format. The details will soon be unveiled and as soon as they are, we’ll be bringing you the news. But, as usual, the festival will include planned activities like workshops and musical performances, as well as open forums to encourage public discussions. Qatar International Art Festival is also round the corner at the end of this month from October 24 to 28. If you’re a sports enthusiast, which almost everyone in Qatar is, the Men’s ITF World Tennis is scheduled to take place from October 4 to 24 at the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex. 28

FASHION & DESIGN Nothing quite puts a spotlight on culture and heritage more than fashion itself. According to Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf, it shows the world who we are and who we’d like to be. It is the most powerful art there is. It’s movement; design and architecture all in one. Qatar has long been known as one of the biggest consumers of luxury fashion. However, now initiatives have been put forward to help its own local fashion industry to thrive. Qatar brought together the best designers of the region with a jury of notable personalities from the creative industry worldwide in 2018 for Fashion Trust Arabia, (FTA) a prize to support-up-andcoming and established designers. Now in its fourth installment, FTA is also offering mentoring sessions with industry leaders. The finalists in 2018 found themselves presenting to a panel of judges, including Diane von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang, Haider Ackermann and others. Apart from FTA, Qatar also has M7, a new incubation hub for start-ups in Qatar’s growing fashion and design industry located in Msheireb Downtown. The place encompasses a public showplace for entrepreneurship and innovation. Spread over an impressive five-story building, M7 envisions a space for everyone who is interested in the creative industry, be it as a hobbyist or well-established business. With the Covid-19 pandemic, M7 was also offering online entrepreneurship workshops and webinars for aspiring creatives. Industry leaders and experienced designers were given an opportunity to speak to the young aspiring designers, sharing their journeys and helping devise a roadmap for successful launches and sustainability.

Under the direction of chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, M7 also promotes sustainable fashion, and showcases exhibitions every now and then focussed on pollution and how it can be reduced with the fashion industry. Apart from M7, and FTA, Shop Qatar and Heya Fashion Week are also platforms that bring local artisans and designers into the spotlight by providing them a space and platform to reach out to a greater audience and more buyers. The young designers are looking out for communities, sustainability, supporting artisans and sending out a strong message as part of their showcase. If you’re a design enthusiast or aspiring to be one, these are the places to look out for and take the best from. ✤ fact magazine

We at FACT have always been huge fans of the brand and this month, thanks to the friendly and professional team at NBK Automobiles, we were given the opportunity to experience the new MercedesBenz S-Class and, yet again, we were more than impressed. As soon as Mercedes-Benz’s new flagship vehicle came into view, we could see that the exterior design of the new S-Class is that of a classic sedan, one that boasts perfect proportions. At the front end, a bigger-than-ever, high-status radiator grille draws the eye, complemented by front headlights that house a unique LED signature. With a short overhang, long wheelbase and a balanced rear overhang, the new S-Class looks as powerful as it does graceful. With 20-inch AMG, multi-spoke alloy wheels and

optional flush fitted doorhandles that pop out as you approach the car, the flanks are no less than stunning with a single crease running across the length of an otherwise smooth surface. The rear lights have intricate LED detailing with chrome accents, whilst real exhaust pipes are present in the dual exhaust setup. As we entered the vehicle we felt as if we were slipping into a firstclass lounge. Firstly, the soft seats are extremely comfortable, supportive and situated higher than we expected, giving us a commanding view of the roads. The cabin seats can be adjusted in a multitude of ways, all via sensitive capacitors on the door. With no less than 19 individual motors used to adjust your seat, no matter your size or shape, you are sure to have one comfy ride. Four of these motors are dedicated to providing a range of massages, accessible through the Comfort Menu on the infotainment system. These include massage options such as Hot Relaxing Back, Hot Relaxing Shoulders, Mobilising Massage, Activated Massage, Classic Massage and many more. The steering wheel is beautifully designed, feels great in hand and is full of capacitor buttons, allowing the driver to have complete control over the functions and systems of the vehicle without taking their hands off the wheel. • CITY RIDES while staying fit. At the touch of a button or by voice command, the holistic ‘Fit & Healthy’ approach of ENERGIZING Comfort provides a tangible experience of the different comfort systems in the S-Class, and features programmes that bundle them into worlds of experience. Mercedes-Benz has fundamentally improved ENERGIZING comfort control in the new S-Class. Innovations such as a massage, based on vibrating motors in the seat cushion, and resonance transmission, by the Burmester high-end 4D surround sound system, are integrated. This makes bass tones feelable. Direct reproduction of the sound resonance in the seats adds another level to the three-dimensional listening experience – 4D sound inspired by the acoustic massage. The perceived intensity of the sound can be individually adjusted for each seat. The music becomes even more emotional thanks to this feelable component. Two exciters are integrated into the backrest of each seat for this purpose. In the rear, the almost hidden controls on the doors operate the side and rear windows. The seats are multi-adjustable and very comfortable with massage functionality and microfibre headrests. As in the front, ambient lighting features on the doors glow red or blue depending on whether you are turning the temperature up or down. An Android tablet fitted in the central console can be removed and used to surf the internet or watch movies. Built-in rear seat entertainment is present on both sides, as well as an optional fridge behind the centre consol. There are plenty of USB ports and cup holders throughout the car, as well as wireless charging options and even a set of wireless, noisecancelling headphones. Once out on the road, we got to play with the second generation MBUX learn-capable system. This system is more digital and intelligent than its predecessor, with brilliant displays on up to five large screens, in part with OLED technology. The 3D driver display allows for spatial view at the touch of a button for the very first time and a real three-dimensional effect is achieved without the need for 3D glasses. The head up display shows details such as current speed, the speed limit, road markings and more. It warns you when you are straying out of your lane and, when you select augmented reality, actual arrows appear on the road in front of you, directing you where to turn. We have never experienced technology like this in any car we have test driven before. This is one classy and capable vehicle to drive. In truth an entire article could easily be written on each and every feature of this vehicle and you would still have to experience it for yourself to truly understand what this magical creation is capable of. ✤

SUPERIOR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY OPPO have set themselves apart from the competition with the new Reno6 Z.

W

ith so many smartphones on the market, selecting a new device can be challenging and even a tad stressful. These mobile devices don’t come cheap, so making a well-informed choice is important to avoid any regrets later on. This month, FACT magazine got the opportunity to test the new OPPO Reno6 Z 5G, a device we feel is well-worth your consideration. OPPO have opted to keep the lightweight and thin structure that has worked so well for previous models. Both the Aurora and Steller Black versions incorporate the unique Reno Glow Design, ensuring the Reno6 Z exudes a superior style that many other smartphone manufacturers will be eying jealously. Inspired by the northern lights, the phone’s back cover creates a subtle shimmering effect, adding to the class and elegance of these phones. What really makes the OPPO Reno6 Z special and raises it above the competition is its camera setup. This device is basically a portable studio, offering a multitude of options to take photographs and videos to the next level. With a 64MP triple-camera setup and OPPO’s ultimate AI algorithm, we were able to capture stunning, crystal clear images and videos. In brief, it uses AI algorithms to pinpoint real light sources in the background and to create bokeh light spots at varying depths, thereby imitating professional cameras. It also uses natural beautification effects, removing skin imperfections on the face whilst preserving natural features. It can also match the skin tone of your face with your neck and brighten your eyes. With superior focus tracking, dual-view video and Flash Snapshot that enables the phone to instantly focus, you won’t find any dull or blurry pics in your gallery. Once you’ve captured the desired moments, you can apply some 36

post-production magic through the AI Palette. This allows you to copy the style of an image you have found online with just one click. Deep learning algorithms are used to study the colour distribution of the target image style, which is then applied adaptively to the original image, whilst maintaining the quality and texture of the original image. Truly impressive stuff! The designers of the OPPO Reno6 Z 5G didn’t forget about the gamers out there. We found gaming on this device to be super smooth and without any lagging. The reason being, despite its size, this device is equipped with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage as well as innovative RAM Expansion technology. Combine this with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 and an SGS Eye Care Display and you have one incredible gaming experience. All-in-all, the OPPO Reno6 Z 5G is a beautifully designed, technologically superior device that should be considered by anyone searching for a new smartphone. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.OPPO.COM FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

APP-LICIOUS What’s on the smartphone agenda for October?

InShot For social media video editing, no fancy collages or slicing, InShot is a very handy app that lets you trim, speed up, or add music and filters. It’s pretty basic, but with that comes a user-friendly experience. Apart from that, for the perfect Insta square you can also add background and select the canvas according to your requirements. InShot also has some options for background scores that are both licensed and unlicensed. This means you can upload a video with a background score without any hesitation or fear of content getting blocked due to copyright infringements. This app has evolved over a period of time and now is mostly focussed for social media apps, mainly Instagram IGTV, reels and TikTok. It also makes it smooth and easy to import, trim and edit your clips together, then add filters, stickers, subtitles, captions and emojis. On top of all that, Apple users who usually struggle with importing music have the option to use iTunes and import music already downloaded. The app is free, but comes with ads, and your videos will be watermarked if using some features. However, both can be removed with a small monthly subscription.

5 OVER 5 •

Do you recall your first foray into the hospitality industry? It was a leap of faith. As a youngster, I was clueless of what my calling was; then there was this hospitality school close to where I live in France, and I said, “Maybe it’s worth the try”. While doing my studies, I had a great opportunity to work in the George V Paris, one of the most prestigious hotels in Paris at the time, as a part-time room service waiter. The turning point is still fresh in my memory: my first town hall meeting. The general manager (GM) was addressing all of us, a gentleman so wise and humble, talking about looking after us, his people, and as I listened attentively to him, I told myself, “This is what I want to do”. From that moment on, I pushed myself every day and worked my way up — pursued my degrees, started out in finance and purchasing, then back in food and beverage (F&B) in Canada, moved to London until I got to manage hotel operations, then moved to Dubai. It was in 2014 in Bahrain when I had my first GM role. Where do you draw your inspiration? Were there any mentors who influenced the way you work and think? Two main people had a massive impact on how I work and how I lead people. First, as I mentioned, the very first GM that I had who inspired me so much with his vision, humility and empathy for his people, turned my perspective around and made me realise what exactly I wanted to do. Secondly is Nick Campbell, my GM during my time at Holiday Inn London - Regent's Park, who became my role model. He challenged me, mentored me, gave me the opportunity to grow and develop myself, and moulded me into the leader that I am today. As an expat in Doha, what, for you, are the most interesting and unique aspects of Qatar, or your favourite things to do here as a domestic tourist? Qatar is a very dynamic, fast-progressing country. It is quite

exciting to be part of all the happenings and projects which are underway. Moreover, I quite like the lifestyle and there are just so many nice places to go to around Qatar. For instance, on my typical weekend, I wake up early and go cycling down to Al Khor and back in the morning, spend time by the beach in the afternoon, and find a place to dine in at night. Can you share with us a day in the life of one of your hotels? What makes an international hotel like yours tick? Both of our hotels — Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn at The Business Park — are business hotels, and with the location and the facilities of our hotels, along with Doha being currently quite busy with projects, we have many business travellers coming and staying with us. We are very fortunate to be in Qatar, where a lot of things are happening and continuing to progress, and so, right now, we are focussed on managing the high level of business that we have despite the global pandemic. Both our brands are centred on business travel; we aim to make business travel as easy and as comfortable as possible, and people around the world are aware of both our brands’ reputations. Every day we make it our mission to exceed expectations and deliver on our promise. What advice would you give for someone considering a career in the hospitality industry? Hospitality is not an easy industry, it is 24/7, and it never stops. My advice is to try it, give it a go. It is an industry of endless opportunities, but expect to work hard. For someone starting out in hospitality, it is of key importance to understand that we are in the service industry; whether you are wait staff or a GM, you will serve people. If you like walking with people, helping and serving others, the industry can offer an infinite amount of possibilities for growth and development.✤ fact magazine

A SWEET STORY Jean-Luc Vasseur, Executive Pastry Chef, La Cigale Hotel, Doha, tells us about his journey into patisserie and paying homage to Doha.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What is your background in food and how did you become a chef? My culinary career began at a young age. I started in a traditional patisserie boulangerie shop in the South of France close to St Tropez, then moved to restaurants and the luxury hotel industry which took me to the UK, New Zealand, the Seychelles, Singapore, Cambodia, China and now Qatar. During my time in Asia, I took part in a few international competitions and won awards in sugar display and chocolate. I became a pastry chef because of my grandmother. I used to see her cooking all these cakes and tarts for the family for our weekly Sunday lunch. I knew by 10 years old that I would do that as a profession, so I joined a culinary school when I was just a kid. When did you first step into a kitchen and start baking professionally and what are your recollections of your training? My first step into a pastry kitchen was at the young age of 14, so I could buy myself my dream motorbike. I started around 10pm in the evening and, most of the time, didn’t finish until around 5am in the morning. I did feel very tired and ended up falling asleep inside the storage room where they pile up the flour bags. At that time the training process was different; you started by doing simple tasks and cleaning. I loved the joy of baking and fell in love with the fresh smell of croissants at 3am in the morning.

What do you like in pastry that you cannot find in other culinary fields? And what’s the most challenging part? The diversity in pastry, you need to know about every part like chocolates, sugar display, breads, cakes, ice cream and so on, and also, it’s like a chemistry, there is always a reason behind why a cake has failed to rise or a mousse is too soft. Also, you need to constantly keep up with the trends and latest products, that’s why every year I go to Japan or France to train in the best French chocolate school, Valrhona. The most challenging part is to source the right and perfect ingredients at the right time of year. For example, nowadays people want fresh strawberries in the middle of winter and, from my point of view, that’s wrong because you will never get the perfect flavours of the fruit. Our best sellers are the Frasier, but I wish to explain that a strawberry cake is only delicious and at its best when the fruit is in season and ripe to perfection. Can you share with us your signature dish or style and explain what makes it special to you? I have crafted my latest creation specially for La Cigale Traiteur at La Cigale Hotel managed by Accor, and it is called DOHA. After spending most of my career in Asia, it’s my first time in the Middle East, so the flavours are different and the palate prefers more sweetness. After tasting and trying different ingredients, I finally found the key things to combine and then I created the DOHA cake, it’s made of saffron, pistachios, orange blossom water and, of course, the nice ivory chocolate from France. ✤ fact magazine

t was one early Tuesday evening, and we could feel the thrilling ambiance that awaited us as we approached the exceptionally designed and intricately lit main entrance of the newly launched Shirvan Métisse. The legendary brand has been brought to Qatar by Michelin-starred Chef Akrame Benallal and offers an expedition of culinary flavours and an entirely new fusion concept at the vivacious Porto Arabia, The Pearl-Qatar. The space flaunts a meticulously decorated interior featuring a relaxed Oriental feel with décor influenced by tradtions, such as oversized wooden doors, lanterns and intricately embossed metal serving plates, and Arab-Andalusian design, complemented by the open kitchen at the heart of the restaurant. The outdoors is enhanced by an air-conditioned terrace overlooking the picturesque backdrop of the marina. For some of us, the Old Silk Road food and culture evoke a rather mysterious and adventurous image and our journey was nothing but mesmerising from here on. Chic but subtle music filled the air, with new and regular guests arriving to perfect the vibe. At Shirvan Métisse, mocktails are part of the journey and are best enjoyed paired with the food. The drinks are infused with homemade syrups and fresh fruits and focus on spices. Whilst our food selection was being recommended, the mocktails arrived, and our favourite was the Frozen Bay, a minty and quenching concoction of apple juice lemon sorbet, garam masala and lemon confit that is served bubbled in a glass and gives out dancing smoke when popped. A sharing concept is the soul of Shirvan Métisse cuisine. It reflects the inspiration in every dish of adventure that draws emotions closer together. First to arrive was an enticing set of sharing platters. The Black Hummus, which is the charcoal-smoked and 46

flavorsome eggplant and chick peas, served with Lebanese bread, is the best way to start; followed by a soft and juicy duo of oysters served with succulent chermoulah sauce with salmon roe. The Red Tuna tartare was a feast of sumptuous flavours mixed together, immaculately accompanied with truly tangy, crispy winter asparagus plated with tahini sauce. Azerbaijani wraps came next. The Et Qutab, the fresh Azeri grilled bread stuffed with impeccable shavings of lamb, onions and sumac, as well as the Goy Qutab, a scrumptious mix of fresh herbs and onions both perfected with the combination of pomegranate and lemon juice, were dishes we couldn’t get enough of, but then came heavenly cheese naan topped with truffles and the delicious Beetroot Tikki, with a remarkably crispy shell-covered beetroot with cashew nuts. The mains were hearty delights. The picture-perfect lamb, called The Unmissable Slow Braised Lamb, that serves two to three people (looked more like four to six to me), was so appetizing to the eyes. Marinated in fermented milk and slow cooked for 24 hours, the meat is also flawlessly grilled, exceptionally tender on the inside and lusciously crispy on the inside. It is divinely tasty with or without the reduced lamb jus that is served with it. The Lobster Pastilla was the masterpiece of the evening. The slowcooked lobster is an indulgence to remember. Soft and juicy, it melts divinely, marvellously served with angel hair noodles and crispy filo pastries, it’s the dish we will return for. The sides are a revelation, the Spices Silk Road is a delicious combination of chilli and spices, while Tedec Style is a crispy rice conception from Iran, flavoured with almonds, baked then pan fried to perfection. At Shirvan Métisse, the recipes are beautifully prepared and presented with a level of care that is dazzling to complement

the delicate flavours. So, we couldn’t have been more excited when our desserts started with The Unconditional Millefeuille, made out of orange and cream with white chocolate and, my personal favourite, the Frozen Baklava, a celestial creation of rose water, pistachios, nuts, nougatine and almond milk, provided the ultimate amazing end to our feast. One thing noteworthy to mention and the most important thing that made the experience even more memorable was the spotless and amazing service. The team, from the management to kitchen and serving staff, are the most hospitable, without trying too hard, smart, friendly and passionate team I have ever encountered. This leaves a mark and makes a lot of difference; I will easily return because of them. Shirvan Métisse lets you discover the world of the Silk Road through a culinary journey, by mirroring the destination, Chef Akrame Benallal has created a menu that combines an abundance of colourful wonders, adding depth to the dishes. Shirvan Métisse Doha seems to be the outcome of the entangled alleys of the magnificent bazaar giving life and soul to the dishes and projecting images of a rich nourishing East, bringing it together into one Silk Road. It was an experience to remember and it is evident that, barely one day after the launch, Shirvan Métisse is already a force to be reckoned with, not just as a restaurant but as a destination on the Doha scene. ✤

THE INDIAN ADAA

FACT’s Muhammad Asad Ullah made his way to Qalamkarri at Banyan Tree Doha to try out the new menu, curated perfectly the Indian way (adaa), bringing together contemporary flavours from India’s multifaceted cuisines. fact magazine 48

I

walked into Qalamkarri right after they had introduced their new menu. I settled on one of the plush fuchsia tables lining the walls and, facing the skyline of Doha, offering a spectacular view from the 25th floor of the hotel. Named and inspired by Kalamkari Art (a traditional Indian art form that involves block or hand printing) the restaurant brings together contemporary flavours and cooking techniques. Qalamkarri explores some of the finest flavour-packed regional dishes of India. Amid colourful chairs in the art deco-inspired interior — with lots of bird and peacock patterns in sight. We kicked things off with Chicken Samosa Ragda (an Indian street food recipe where crispy warm chicken samosa is topped with spicy cholle, chilled yogurt and mint chutney), Paan Patha Aloo Chaat (a traditional North Indian favourite made with Betel leaves, pan fried potatoes, and ground spices), Amchur Makai Ka Salad (a simple sweet corn salad), Paneer Pasanda (shallowfried, stuffed cheese in a smooth, creamy onion-tomato based gravy with a twist of spinach gravy on the side), Fish Koliwada Chips (a recipe that hails from the Maharashtra region in India and includes simple fish marinated and fried in thick batter and masala), Chettinad Prawn Mini Dosa (a taco-styled burrito with flavoursome prawns), Chicken 65 (the immensely popular South Indian-style boneless chicken with yogurt-based curry), Bhatti ka Lobster (a lobster marinated in Indian spices, grilled and smoked... a delight!) and Kache Nimbu Ka Jhinga (prawns marinated in lemon). My favourite has to be the Chicken Samosa Ragda, so fact magazine

crispy, crunchy, deep in the flavour of tamarind sauce and dangerously moreish. Food was the ultimate cultural melting pot here at Qalamkarri. With every dish it seemed that the chefs had combined the flavours of Mumbai, Goa, Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata and Kerala all in one menu. It was fascinating how the variety stemmed from heritage influences. Each dish had its own story to tell and the chef’s Indian tadka elevated the flavours with creativity. Take for instance the Chicken 65, although it’s a South Indian dish, the yogurt gravy was so Punjabi in style that it reminded me of kurri-pakoda. These appetisers and starters left me belly-full and yet yearning for more, so, I was happy to see the mains. The best food stops conversation. It grinds to a pause even the juiciest news: one must stop, swallow and savour. And such was the case here. The constant winner throughout the meal was the texture and rich spicy flavours. Our Achari Baigan Chops (lamb chops marinated with pickling spices) were wonderfully tender in the middle and gloriously charred on the outside (especially around the bone). The chops were so rich in chaat masala that as the meat melted in the mouth one could witness the fragrance and kicking taste of Indian spices. The other standout main was Konkan Punjab Tawa Fish, in which two types of grilled fish (one in green sauce, which is traditional to Maharashtra, and the other in traditional masala, a very Punjabi style) were served. This has to be the most beautifully presented dish on the menu. An affair of two states, together on one plate, all piled into gorgeously grilled fish — a nod to the head chef’s traditional Indian cuisine speciality. And the Naan! Ah! Tandoori Kulcha, Garlic and Coriander Naan and Zattar Naan were so juicy yet tender that you could easily pair them with any of the starters/mains served or even just nibble them on their own — some of the thinnest and crispiest breads we’ve seen around in Doha. Oh, where the fish dishes were seriously excellent here, we paid special attention to the Tandoori Murgh Tikka Biryani. It’s a hell of a feast, spiked with swish Indian ingredients bursting with aroma and flavour. Before we move on to the desserts, the innovation of drinks here needs to be said out loud. They were based on exotic flavours and we tried the signature mocktail which was creamy, coconutty with a punch of apricot. So divine! For dessert, the Gulab Jamun Cream Brulee was to die for. Traditional Gulab Jamun paired with cherries and raspberries on 50

a bed of cream brulee. Who knew the contemporary take on such a dessert would be so, so delicate? Delicate enough for me that, even after trying all the appetisers, starters and mains, I got halfway through the big bowl of this which was followed by Trio Kulfi Ice Cream in flavours of saffron, pistachio and traditional rabbri. Like all things truly Indian, you will also enjoy the Bollywood music in the background. It’s usually instrumental but, if you’ve been a Bollywood fan, there’s no way you won’t recognise the songs. In the elegant dining room, high in the sky, Qalamkarri brings together Qatar and India in a magical cohesion. From the beginning of October Qalamkarri will be serving lunch daily, as well as dinner and will also introduce a Friday brunch. ✤

tepping into Rodizio you realise Doha can really outdo itself with the international flavours on offer and the picture opportunities are instant. A magnificent stained-glass window graces the entrance and, at the other end, you can see the chef grilling the meat live, while lofty ceilings and dim lighting set the scene for the evening. Entering Rodizio, the atmosphere is warm. Small chandeliers dangle from the ceiling with shades of maroon giving an elegant feel. Immediately on entry, your eyes connect with the large cooking station rooted in the centre of the restaurant. Floor-to-ceiling windows and deep red décor with lots of photo frames in black make an incredible backdrop for those much-needed IG pictures. The restaurant staff are dressed immaculately, complementing the place's ambiance, and know the menu very well (they managed to answer my many questions effortlessly), making the whole experience that much more exclusive. Myself and my friend were seated at a corner table, perfect for all our candid conversations and laughter. We were there for churrascaria — to experience it all. A set menu featuring starters, desserts and, for the mains, meat cuts of 12 different types. This is a haven for meat lovers! From chicken to lamb to beef, everything was grilled to perfection. We knew that meat was a must-have, well that’s what we were there for, but the starters looked too delicious to miss. cheese bun), plantain fritto (fried ripe plantains with cinnamon), crispy fried cassava and beef empanada (savoury pasties made of dough with beef filling). We usually eat bananas as a fruit and imagining them in any other way is really hard. But, to our surprise, plantain fritto was really delicious. It was perfectly crunchy with the sweet taste of banana and a strong aroma of cinnamon. It is something that I’d definitely order again just like the cheese bun; served hot, pan de queijo is a Brazilian version of cheese fatayer served locally, but with more cheese and crispy. The salads that followed included chicken Caesar, Aguachile Verde and arugula salad. Aguachile has to be my favourite. Lime, coriander, jalapeno, avocado, cucumber and onion — a very basic combination but it’s the marination of lime that gave the taste a lift. For the mains: the serving started with chicken yoghurt, followed by a Maminha cut, flap steak, beef rib-eye and tenderloin with mustard and cheese, lamb chop, lamb leg, and ‘smoky’ veal topside, all medium rare and incredibly flavoursome. It was as if the meat melted in our mouths with every bite. My personal favourite had to be the beef tenderloin. Paired with truffle aioli, the cut was executed perfectly and filled with unimaginable flavours. The best thing about the tenderloin was that the beef was surrounded by a crispy layer of fat making it so convenient to separate the two if you have certain food preferences. To continue our meat-fest we also turned our attention to the beef rib-eye, accompanied by Brazilian garlic rice and a 54

The meat was succulent and packed with intense flavour, the flesh fell apart on my plate as soon as it landed – Rodizio knows how to cook a medium-rare steak to perfection. It’s about getting the perfect mouthful, the mouthful that hits every single note. Even if you’re really paying attention, there’s no one single taste. It’s many tastes. What followed this meaty event was roast pineapple with cinnamon, another surprising dish that shook us with its distinct taste. We discovered that pineapple, once roasted, is even more delicate and sweet. The cinnamon kicked up the sweetness of the fruit and balanced it to the core. Rodizio is generous with the desserts. We were served with Coupe Caraibe, Chocolate Tart, Coconut Tres Leches, and Classic Crème Brûlée. Our favourite: Coconut Tres Leches. The moist cake with coconut milk formed a perfect base for the assortment of fruits and passion fruit ice-cream. So divine! If you get a chance to try Rodizio’s churrascaria menu, do, it’s worth experiencing what is, genuinely, just butter on your tongue. This restaurant has one vision, and it’s clear – to be one of best meat places in Doha. With an opulent setting, exquisite food and switched-on staff, Rodizio is the restaurant to watch. ✤

reakfast might be the most important meal of the day according to the nutritionists but, on a weekend, it’s the brunch for us that’s the big deal. A good brunch hits all the right notes to kick off a power-packed weekend. It’s late enough to allow for a lie-in but early enough that the entire day still stretches ahead of you. And when it’s at a place like Al Hubara at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel, what’s not to love? Almost nothing! It's grand, sumptuous, everything delicious and very family-friendly. I was welcomed to the Sheraton with a huge floral installation of hydrangeas in the centre of the lobby. Since I love hydrangeas, that was the moment I knew it was going to be a wholesome Friday afternoon, even before looking at the large spread laid out on the left side of the main lobby. Well, it was a large spread in every form, from salads, breads, meats and cheeses to seafood, sushi, shawarma, a pasta station and a sugary dessert corner — so elaborate. The space was bright, with lots of pale wood and pops of vibrant colours. The light made it a very relaxed place for a Friday morning. The family-fun brunch here is a perfect place for family bonding time, not only because it offers many entertainment activities but also a space for kids to have fun. There’s a magic show for the little ones along with mascots dressed as their favourite cartoon characters to keep them entertained. At the exclusive kids’ counter there are several healthy, toasty options, including different flavours of jam and toast, milk and cereal with nuts, and lots of granolas and special themed cakes. If it’s time for kids to play, you can leave them at the designated space and they’ll be immersed in face painting, games, balloons, colouring, and other wholesome activities. In terms of food, the brunch offers relaxed kid-friendly options like mini burgers, candy floss, fruit yogurts and waffles. Something for everyone. I started my Friday brunch with a wholesome wheat bun and goat cheese paired with assorted salads including fattoush, beetroot salad, baba ghanoush and seafood couscous with mint, lemon, olive oil and vine leaves on the side. Think citrus-cured. Where the bread was right out of the oven, fresh and puffy — the cheese was tart and earthy. It was a healthy start. Likewise, for the drinks I ordered sparkling water with lemon and ice and a passion fruit mojito. This mojito was one of the best I’ve tried in Doha. Not too sweet, not too lime or sour. A perfect balance of mint, lime and salt — fizzy and bursting with fruity flavour. Now moving onto the mains. I went for a meaty affair: oven roasted ribeye, beef steak with peppercorns, and grilled chicken paired with Cajun roasted potatoes and sautéed vegetables. The meat, both ribeye and the steak, were flavoursome and tender. It was as if the firm flesh melted in my mouth with every bite. The chicken was so well marinated that I could virtually identify the individual flavours. I also ordered some mixed grill that featured lamb kebabs, grilled chicken and prawns. The sweet chilli sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the prawns. When I say sweet chilli, I really don’t mean the retail bottled stuff, rather that there were pieces of sliced chilli in mine. It’s the attention to detail at Al Hubara that makes it stand out. To continue my culinary tour — I then opted for a small chicken fact magazine

shawarma with lots of garlic sauce and French fries with arrabiata pasta that was prepared right in front of me. Sautéed garlic and mushrooms, a spoonful of sauce, a simmer of olive oil, chilli flakes and voila! A taste for days to remember! The pasta had something of a cult following and there was also an assortment of options in vegetables and sauces. The brunch menu was packed with Mediterranean-meetsMiddle Eastern flavours, especially the vast array of options for seafood. Fish available included Faskar, Safi, Kufar, Blue Crab, Green Mussels, Razor Clams, Langoustine, Lobster, and Prawn Majboush, everything a counter away and grilled/fried fresh on site. The display window was filled with exotic sauces and vegetables to go with. Coming to the four different types of sushi: they began with pale pink slices of tuna and ended with small pieces of avocado. The tuna was seared and there was a puddle of sesame and a shower of cucumber. My favourite had to be the Philly and veggie rolls. A must to try! Now the dessert station. The first things that captured my attention were the hot waffles coming right out of the waffle maker, next were the jalebis from Jamavar. Would you even be South Asian if you see jalebis and don’t get hyped up about them? No! not possible. They were crispy on the outside and dripping with sugary syrup on the inside. The best thing: they were small bites. Apart from that, the menu also featured flavoured Greek yogurt, different cake slices, Umm Ali, Cheese Kunaffeh and candy floss amongst others. At the brunch at Al Hubara the best thing was that I didn’t feel rushed but waiters were checking in regularly enough to make me feel looked after. I left feeling smug for having eaten so well and been somewhere so wholesome, early on a weekend. And yes! I’m going back next week. Bisou Bisou! ✤

e’ve been locked up for a long time and it’s my first time for a salon overhaul since Covid hit us in March 2020. So, I head to the best in town, The Barber Shop at Four Seasons Hotel Doha, for a completely luxurious pampering session. I feel I’ve never deserved it more. Nestled in this extravagant and leisurely structure, this place has the solutions to all your hair, skin, and nail problems. The luxe atelier features a modern take on comfort, uniqueness, boldness and innovation. The mostly leather interior has an unflinchingly masculine feel to it — like an exclusive gentlemen’s club. First up, it’s all about mani and pedi. No longer just for the girls, these days, the health and tidiness of a man’s nails, on both hands and feet, has become just as important as the crease-free Fendi shoes he wears. And The Barber Shop understands that very well. I am seated at the mani-pedi section and it’s time to give my overworked digits some proper care with express treatments. Both are quick yet effective enough to energise, revive, deeply nurture and restore the skin. And not only my hands and feet but also wrists and ankles are smoothed and soothed. The nail technician starts with nail filing and shaping before cutting and tidying the cuticles. Using cuticle remover, a sterilised pusher and cuticle nipper to soften and remove the dead skin, my nails are then buffed for a consistent shiny look. I have never had such a nice, smooth surface before. After a gentle soak, we start the pedicure process with extensive scrubbing to remove dead skin before getting to the nails. It’s really hard to cut nails neatly and safely, without risking in-growns. The nail technician trims back all the excess skin and gives my nails a good clean and cuts back the cuticles carefully. Calluses are ground down and, after all the exfoliation, I get a soothing, tingling lotion application that restores the moisture. The best part of getting a manicure and pedicure? The massage. Now, there’s some debate as to its purpose – some say the massage considerably improves circulation and vascular health in the foot and palm, while others aren’t so sure it’s that effective – but one thing is certain, it worked for me. It’s really nice to stop for a moment and have your hands and feet rubbed. Next, it’s time for the fun part – the express facial. This lasts for about 30 minutes and ticks all the boxes, especially if you’re on the go. Quite an all-

66

fact magazine

rounder, it offers deep cleansing as well as toning and stimulating the skin. The 10-minute tension-release massage part is supremely relaxing while a galvanic mask is left on your face leaving the skin looking plump, smooth and radiant. The before-and-after is particularly mesmerising: nasolabial folds are lifted, undereye bags are gone, and jowls are smoothed. Call it the era of the au naturel nip-tuck. I’m so ready for my next Instagram selfie. Hair is, of course, The Barber Shop’s forte. We begin, as every good salon visit should, with a careful consultation. The barber listens and identifies that my length needs to be equalised to achieve that enviable volume I require. He has the perfect rescue package for me that includes a hair trim with slightly faded sides and a nice blow-dry. There are few things more comforting than having someone wash your hair as they massage in shampoo and conditioner to rinse away product build-up and stress. The chair at the washing station reclines horizontally allowing me to lie flat and relax as the barber cleans and caresses my locks. After cleansing, my still slightly damp hair is chopped from left, right and centre — leaving just enough for them to spike it up with an expert blow-dry, hairspray and strong wax. Along with the immaculately shaped sideburns, it’s a haircut that creates a show-stopping profile and is ultra-directional, making it perfect for those who really want to make a statement with their postlockdown do. The reference is drawn from a ‘90s boy band classic guitar hero, a mussed-up texture or a strategically placed hair tuck or parting. The back and sides are not shaven, but short enough to softly frame the face. And everything is now sprayed in place, guaranteeing this haute style can withstand any strong winds or humidity that make an unwelcome appearance. Thankfully, the stylist gives me a tutorial on how to achieve this look at home. With really good barbers at the helm, The Barber Shop is the place to be for men looking for a luxurious grooming space for a haircut, blow-dry or styling at an achievable price that doesn’t scrimp on luxury. Booking is advised as space is reduced due to social distancing requirements. ✤

ANOTHER SIDE OF SPAIN From Unesco World Heritage sites to tanning on the beaches and exploring gothic architecture on your way, FACT recommends three unconventional cities in Spain for you to visit that are not Madrid or Barcelona.

TRAVEL •

ARCHITECTURE GALORE People go to the Andalusian city of Granada, in southern Spain, from across the nation and beyond, for two things mainly: The Alhambra and the tapas. The Alhambra is a walled fortress housing magnificent 13th- to 15th-century Moorish palaces and gardens, the design pays homage to natural emblems and cosmic movements. However, a visit to the Alhambra can be split in two with an evening visit to either the splendid Nasrid Palaces or the lush gardens, preceding or following a daytime visit to the ramparts, museum and gardens. With more than two million visitors yearly heading to The Alhambra, a Unesco World Heritage site, the city’s tourism industry had settled into a routine of shuttling visitors in and out of the city in about 24 hours. But recently some other ancient structures have been restored, and the region’s individual cuisine has come into its own. The Alhambra is to Spain what the Taj Mahal is to India, a site so popular on its own that people actually visit the city just to have a look at the magnificent architecture. Apart from The Alhambra there’s the Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation that’s nestled into the same hill and spreads over five levels on the steeply pitched slope with a stepped garden. The foundation houses the collection of the art historian Manuel Gómez-Moreno and of Rodríguez-Acosta (1878-1941), an accomplished painter of vibrant and moody Andalusian subjects. This is a treat for art and history lovers since the works on display range from pre-Roman Iberian tribes to early 20thcentury masters like Joaquín Sorolla. If you are really intent not just on sight-seeing but also want to enjoy the local experience, go for a breakfast at Café Fútbol. It’s very mid-city and opened its doors in 1903. Do not forget to try their Spanish hot chocolate. Now that you’ve seen The Alhambra garden by garden and terrace by terrace, end your Granada experience with a latenight flamenco performance in the caves of Sacromonte before moving on to your next destination.

TANNING IN MALLORCA Known for its scenic coastline, world-renowned beaches, and majestic mountains in the north, it’s not hard to understand why the Spanish Balearic Island Mallorca is a beloved destination during the summer. For the past few years, the island has been silently revamping itself with a number of luxe hotel openings, restoration of old artisan crafts by an influx of next-generation creatives and a growing number of restaurants awarded Michelin stars. And nowhere is this gentle growth more apparent than in the low-key capital, Palma. Here, the distinctive old town boasts a grand cathedral and pretty cobbled streets, while chic boutiques, contemporary art galleries and the super-smart waterfront attract an ever-more cosmopolitan crowd. This is a place to be if you’re a beach and sun lover. The Ca’n Pere Antoni, backed up by lush steep cliffs and terraced mountains, is a favourite city beach among locals who flock there only to stretch out and tan on the fine white sand. From there it’s only a cycle ride east along the palm tree-lined promenade towards the former fishing village of Portixol, which hosts a handful of excellent seafood restaurants. For a day away from the ocean waters, go to the outskirts of the city to visit the Pilar I Joan Miró Foundation that opened its doors in 1981. With a collection of more than 6,000 artworks donated by artist Joan including sketches, drawings, paintings and sculptures you can discover the mastery of this modern art icon. Another place to visit for literary and art lovers is the Biblioteca de Babel — a classic library that has pieces of art, history and books that give an insight to the heritage of the city 72

and its modern art. The place also offers terrace seating where guests can enjoy a refreshing drink alongside an array of tapas. Next, move on to something even more cultural and head to the city’s large landmark Cathedral Santa Maria of Palma. The Gothic church, also referred to as La Seu, was first built in the early 1200s and took more than 400 years to finish, and is today open to the public to visit.

TRAVEL •

ANCIENT AND MODERN Known as part of the Basque Country, Guernica and San Sebastian, in the coastal region of northern Spain can be considered some of the most popular destinations. Hiding slightly inland is a city of contrasts there, Bilbao. A place that has the unexpected duality of things to do, see and eat in an urban landscape. There is a futuristic tram gliding along the streets bordering the city’s ancient quarter, a river lined with muted cracking buildings, architecture that speaks heritage, and a museum with a modern landscape backed by lush green mountains. Every corner in this city yields a highly visual and oddly surprising twist. There are old-school fish markets that meld and lead to high-end boutiques and contemporary architecture that at once disappears into cobbled streets. Here you rarely hear English or even Spanish. The natives speak Basque and even the most touristy hotspots of the city are rarely as crowded as those in, say London, during the peak holiday season. You can easily spend a few weeks exploring the enchanting nooks of the city. The market, Mercado de la Ribera, that spreads at 2.47 acres and is located right on the bank of the river, is bliss for someone who prefers vegetables, fresh fruits, fish, mushrooms, cheese and game, in season. It’s a very Instagrammable hotspot, a place full of colours — depicting the locals and their expression of love for the tourists. If you’re an art or design enthusiast, the Guggenheim is definitely a place to visit. The museum is home to world-class pieces.

Puppy, a massive, flowering Jeff Koons dog sculpture sitting outside the building generates many photo ops. Now move over to Santiago Cathedral, Plaza de Santiago. Located in the centre of the city and constructed during the 15th century encapsulating chic gothic architecture with arched ceiling and doorways, it is considered one Bilbao’s oldest building.

BIG SCREEN The Chair Need to Know:

The Chair is a comedy-drama that follows the life of JiYoon as she becomes the Chair of the English department at an important university. We follow her as she tries to navigate between difficult co-workers, reviving the English department and dealing with personal matters.

Creators: Amanda Peet, Annie Julia Wyman Cast: Sandra Oh, Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Nana Mensah, Bob Balaban

The show deals with issues such as institutional racism and sexism as well as cancel culture and how it affects people.

How to Become a Tyrant Need to Know:

Have you ever wondered how some of the world's worst tyrants came to power? In this six-episode documentary, you look at six different dictators and what they did right and wrong. And how you can learn from them to avoid becoming a tyrant yourself.

Narrator and Producer: Peter Dinklage

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The series begins with us being introduced to the first woman chair, Ji-Yoon (Sandra Oh) of the English department at Pembroke University. She is handed a crumbling department, which is outdated and seen as irrelevant to students due to the old-fashioned methods of the teachers. And as she tries to keep the department afloat, she must also deal with problematic co-workers such as Bill (Jay Duplass), who is struggling with the loss of his wife, and being a single mother to a troubled child. The show deals with issues such as institutional racism and sexism as well as cancel culture and how it affects people. It truly encapsulates how it feels to be a working mother trying to also build a career in such a tumultuous time, where you can lose your job over a joke. It's definitely worth your time, and it's a great show to binge over the weekend as it only has six episodes.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

In this documentary narrated by Peter Dinklage, we learn from the 'playbook' the ultimate guide to becoming a tyrant. In each episode, we follow one of the worst tyrants of the 20th century. We learn about their achievements, faults and the actions they took to be remembered as a tyrant. From Adolf Hitler in 1933 to Kim Il-sung in 1948, and many others. In this fascinating documentary, everything is analysed including the personality and mentality needed to be a dictator and the lengths one goes to stay in power, such as manipulating the truth, crushing your rivals and keeping control with violence and fear. We also get to hear from various historians and professors as they comment on the brutal actions taken by these insecure, selfcentered and power-hungry men in their attempts at conquest. The documentary also clarifies why the 20th century was one of the bloodiest in human history. This is an absolute must-watch, with excellent narration and interesting delivery. 74

ON THE RECORD

FULLY BOOKED

LITERARY FICTION

Are You Enjoying? By Mira Sethi

ALTERNATIVE / INDIE Skin By Joy Crookes

This debut album is not due out until October 15 but several of the songs are already available online and, if they’re anything to go by, it will be a corker. Of the title track, Skin, Joy has said: “Out of all the songs I have ever written, I think Skin is the most important to me. It is simple musically and lyrically, the lyrics are literal and self-explanatory: 'The skin that you're given, was made to be lived in. You've got a life, you've got a life worth living'.” The song appears to be about calling someone back from suicide. Tragic, tearful but also hopeful, made all the more poignant by Joy’s soulful, bluesy voice and perfect delivery. If you listen to this on YouTube, make sure you read the comments, some of them are heartbreaking. Another standout is When You Were Mine. Absolutely awesome intro, horns and old 1950s/60s style tied together with a unique voice that sounds a bit like early Any Winehouse. This is a girly anthem that we promise will be a chart hit and a superb singalong. And we love that the Bangladeshi-Irish singer is still referencing her London roots with a nod to Brick Lane. She will also re-record 2017’s Power for addition to the album showcasing the development of her voice from then to now. If you can’t wait for the official release, we recommend a YouTube binge in preparation. We did and didn’t regret it.

ELECTRONIC / POP / DANCE Loving in Stereo By Jungle Having first heard Jungle, the British electronic duo of Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland, at a bar in Sri Lanka a few years ago, we’ve been waiting eagerly for new music from the pair and Loving In Stereo does not disappoint. Opening track Dry Your Tears introduces an almost cinematic theme with a short tuneful choral interlude. It makes a reappearance later on Keep Moving leading into a floor filler that put us in mind of the Scissor Sisters with some great falsetto disco that gets cutely trippy at the end. Lifting You and Bonnie Hill are two real feel-good tunes with great lyrics. One of the YouTube comments on the latter is that ‘this is a total eargasm’. We couldn’t agree more. In a departure from the poppy theme, Romeo Ft Bas is reggae sounding with a bit of rap – it’s a collab that really, really works. It keeps up the summertime sound and the smooth voice of Bas suits the Jungle style perfectly. Truth is unashamedly retro, think back to the early days of groups like the Thompson Twins and others who managed to include lots of voices. And No Rules, defies description. It’s electronic with a decidedly psychedelic feel. From disco to reggae via a touch of psychedelia, this album truly doesn’t have one duff track.

Mira Sethi's debut book Are you Enjoying? is a collection of short stories, a comprehensive critical reflection on South Asian society, set in the bustle of life in contemporary Pakistan. Her characters hop out from the pages – their voices, their opinions. Their world is an infusion of modernism reinforced by customs and traditions. There is a colourful cast of characters, including a naive actress who has a rude awakening when witnessing the sleazy world of showbiz and a news anchor grappling with the aftermath of his divorce and newfound obsession with his white, American neighbour. All in all, this book highlights aspects of Pakistani liberal culture that not many people are aware of.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The Face: Strangers On A Pier By Tash Aw

Tash Aw’s latest offering takes us on a journey of introspection into his own history, as he reflects on his heritage as an ethnic Chinese, a child of Malaysia, and a citizen of the world. His beautifully drafted personal essay Strangers on a Pier examines the rich diversity of a slice of contemporary Asia via his own family’s immigration and an educational experience. The essay also covers his relationship with his family. He does not argue against migration but rather explores the process and how he navigates through differences in culture and language. This is an intimate exploration as the writer muses on the lives of his ancestors and contemplates the trials and tribulations that have cropped up in his own experiences and the effects of the past on the current generation. fact magazine

T

his autumn winter 2021 offering develops the fruit of years of research into the creation of a simple and long-lasting style, capable of capturing emotion. A man’s wardrobe evolves with the taste of the season, striking the perfect balance between the inspirations that gave shape to today’s look and a creativity orientated towards timeless elegance. The study of the classics and of the elements that emerged above the trends has shed light on the fundamental values, qualities and harmonies that the modern eye has updated whilst keeping their spirit intact. The consistent and essential style, the soft silhouettes and the refined details make elegance a daily and dynamic occurrence. The collection also brings a focus on elegance focusing on the blend of formal attire and versatility that the suit conveys. Sartorial patterns and contemporary fits are reinterpreted in pure Brunello Cucinelli style. The suit embraces the concept of balance: it embodies a style that is poised between classic and modern, tends to tone down its formal attitude thanks to casual lines and gives character to looks, all whilst staying true to versatility. Elegance dresses up in patterns that explore the seasonal fabrics: from the iconic pinstriped motif that stands out on wool flannel, to the classic Prince of Wales design that is enriched with the slubbed appearance of linen; and from the exuberant flair of cotton corduroy to the streaked effect of flecked fabrics featuring a slightly degradé colour. ✤ fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About Who’s Next?

Can You Believe It?

Fur Kindness Sake

Daniel Craig is about to end his run as the world’s best known and most loved civil servant, AKA 007 James Bond. The actor will make his last appearance in the iconic role in No Time To Die, which was due to have its worldwide premier as we went to press. Though some argue Bond’s bullish, chauvinistic ways are outdated, there’s no doubt the seemingly indestructible secret agent remains popular. The Guardian even reported that Kate Arthurs, the British Council’s former director of arts, cited Bond as being among the reasons the UK pipped France to the top of the Soft Power 30

A UK newspaper just reported that kids and parents are queueing for hours to see Santa Clause at a British garden centre. They’re worried that a lack of lorry drivers will scupper Christmas this year thanks to food and fuel shortages. Now, don’t get us started on Brexit. But, does anyone really think kids will associate a trip to see Father Christmas in September with the festive spirit? We’ve long been the kind of grinches who believe seasonal decorations should go up no more than a couple of weeks before the big day and come down shortly afterwards. This, supposedly, Christian festival has been taken over

We’ve always been big fans of Jennifer Lopez and have watched her romantic liaisons and adventures with an almost parental indulgence. We rejoiced with her characters in Maid In Manhattan and Monster-In-Law. We were congratulatory on the birth of her uber-cute twins and we simply couldn’t get enough of her astonishing agedefying physique and complexion. In short, added to her talents as singer, dancer and actress, she was, pretty much, everything we wanted to be. Her reunion with Ben Affleck seemed to be the icing on the cake. These two always seemed as if they should

Index in 2018! So, of course, now the game is afoot to guess who will take over. There are an awful lot of hats in the ring and Barbara Broccoli, who runs the franchise, has said two things for sure – it won’t be a woman and it won’t be announced any time soon. Just for a laugh, here’re our top three: Tom Hardy, Regé-Jean Page and Dev Patel. Tell us who you think should next get their hands on that famous Walther PPK.

by commercialism and that’s not any big surprise. But really, Santa visits in September. You must be ‘aving a laugh. And, while we’re on the subject, we saw a Facebook post the other day from a friend in America showing off their Halloween display. A whole month in advance! We must say it makes us glad to live in the Middle East where, though nonMuslim festivals are welcomed and celebrated, we’re not subjected to almost year-round nonsense of this sort!

be together. But then, disaster struck. As the pair paraded their love at The Met Gala, Ms. Lopez was pictured dragging a fur wrap behind her. We didn’t want to believe our eyes but a quick Google search revealed that, yes, J.Lo is a confirmed fan of the real thing, seemingly immune to the suffering caused on fur farms. Oh well, we won’t be watching or listening to her in future. Cancel culture anyone?
