Annual 10% Hike in Rent With real estate booming in Qatar, rent is expected to rise at skyscraper speed, at an average of 10 per cent per year until 2022. Both commercial spaces and residential rentals will be affected. The rents will be decided based on the money spent on constructing the building and land value. New constructions have already gone up by 25 to 50 per cent in some sought-after locations.

Can’t Believe it

70% kids eat unhealthy food

According to Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), a huge majority of children in Qatar have unhealthy eating patterns. One third of school children skip breakfast and around 90 per cent were recorded as having unhealthy snacks between meals. As a result of these munching habits, obesity amongst children has increased. Come on parents, let’s get eating healthy and a little bit of physical exercise too. After all healthy kids are happy kids!

CULTURE CELEBRATED

A Palestinian-Jordanian artist, who studied in Qatar, and now living in Abu Dhabi; Sara is a mother-of-two with a deep and genuine passion for art – particularly art that showcases the beauty and diversity of Arabian women and Middle Eastern culture. Shabana Adam caught up with the artist behind ‘The Burqa Lady’ to talk about her creative work, family life and future goals… Promising to bring you the best local talent, this month FACT wanted to give a Gulf-based artist the chance to showcase their work and takeover the magazine cover. And where better to find the ideal candidate than everybody’s favourite picture-perfect social network? Instagram, of course. It took a simple #arabartist search to find The Burqa Lady and, immediately, we were mesmerised by bright colours and vivid images of subjects specific to Middle Eastern culture. There were canvas paintings of women in traditional burqa, silhouettes of picturesque mosque buildings, and even vibrant cushion

“I always want to capture the beauty of the art piece I am working on, using colours that are vibrant.”

covers and scarves displaying intricate Arabic patterns and writing. It wasn’t only the art that caught our attention. Sara’s bio reads “Arabian woman, Art lover, wife & best of all a Mom of two beautiful children.” It quickly occurred to us that this instagram account belonged to a woman who simply wants to share her love of art, and, more importantly, her love of Arabic culture. “Getting my work out to the public used to be a challenge before but, now, because of social media it has become easier and much more fun,” Sara explains. “My husband is the one who encouraged me to post my work on social media. He is very supportive,” she says. fact magazine .23

From talking to Sara, it’s evident that she truly appreciates the diversity of Middle Eastern culture, and it’s from this, that the 32-year-old gets her artistic vision. “My inspiration comes mostly from women; Emirati, Omani, Qatari, and Jordanian and Iraqi women in particular,” Sara says. “Arabian beauty; I am obsessed with the burqa, the gold head pieces, and the henna. “However, my true inspiration comes from my mother. I have paintings in her name Ameera. She truly is my inspiration as she was the one who pushed me to do more paintings - she even has a few of mine on her wall back home.” With such a rich, varied and exciting cultural muse, we wonder what Sara’s thought process is when creating her paintings? “Well, I always want to capture the beauty of the art piece I am working on, using colours that are vibrant, and also different textures,” Sara tells us. “I want people to see the beauty of Arabia through my work.” As far as techniques go, Sara usually sketches first then uses oil and acrylic paint to develop the colours that she wants in the painting. Her artistic skills and knowledge date back to her teens: “I studied Arts in high school and college,” she says. “I have been drawing and sketching from a very young age and I feel that art is who I am.” She’s been married for a decade now, and it’s heartwarming to learn that Sara’s family life and background has really helped to influence her artistic journey (it seems she’s not the only one with a creative flair and interest in the arts!). “My father collects art pieces from around the world,” she says. “My sister is a freelance photographer 24. fact magazine

and graphic designer, and she sketches. My brother is an assistant director and is working on a television series in Lebanon.” “My Mother is where I get all my confidence - she has been a great support. She actually bought my first painting and has it up in our home in Jordan,” Sara recalls. So, who or what does she look up to for artistic guidance. “There are a lot of artists who have amazing work,” Sara says. “For instance, Nouf Al Himiary from Saudi Arabia - I love her style. Also, the traditions and culture of the Gulf inspires me.” And, the question on everyone’s mind – why The Burqa Lady? – it’s definitely the most intriguing pseudonym we’ve ever come across! “The Burqa lady evolved when I started painting the veiled women of Arabia and the Middle East,” Sarah explains. “I am fascinated with the Burqa and the traditional women in the Gulf.” Sara has one particular piece that she admires most. She tells us: “It’s named Zeynab; the woman in blue. I love this piece, as it was my first official painting. Her modesty, the gold burqa and the blue abaya; she’s shy and sometimes I see myself in her.” Though Sara has only taken part in exhibitions in Jordan, where she sold a few paintings, she says that the next step would be to take part in local expos in Abu Dhabi – a city she happily calls home.

“My mother is where I get all my confidence… She actually bought my first painting and has it up in our home in Jordan.”

Saadiyat Beach

“The most beautiful beach I have seen in the Gulf ” One of Abu Dhabi’s world-class leisure and cultural hubs with a fantastic, pristine beach for locals, holidaymakers and visitors to enjoy.

“I love the culture in Abu Dhabi,” Sara says. “I love the people here, and I hope that one day my art work gets showcased in a well-known exhibition, and that people from around the world can see my work through my eyes.” For young artists, Sara’s advice is: “If you have passion for what you do then go for it and don’t let anyone bring you down. We need to show the world how beautiful the Arab world is, so why not show them through our artwork?” If, like us, you were curious to know more about the woman behind The Burqa Lady, you need not wonder any longer. She’s a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend, and, in our humble opinion, a wonderful artist, proud of her culture and heritage, and ready to let the world see the Middle East through her eyes. For this reason, we’re convinced that The Burqa Lady will be making a lasting mark in the Arab art world very soon. Good Luck Sara! 26. fact magazine

GO: Qatar Summer Festival fun runs until September 27 at the Doha Exhibition Center.

QATAR SUM M ER FESTIVAL As part of the Qatar Summer Festival 2014, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has converted the Doha Exhibition Center (DEC) into an indoor 10,000sqm entertainment city featuring activities and programmes that cater to all ages; from extreme sports for adults, to soft play areas for kids. Going to the entertainment city not only means endless fun, but it also provides a chance for visitors to get away from the late summer heat. The DEC is split up into zones, with dedicated games areas – ranging from professional skateboarding ramps to bouncy castles, a food court area, and a retail area. QTA has carved out a “Summer Freeze” zone, the

biggest zone, mainly featuring a ski slope for both skiing and also snow tubing, ice hockey and a snow globe for children to dive into the artificial snow. In addition, there’s an “Interactive Sports” zone featuring a remote-controlled car, an interactive simulator area with two F1 racing simulators, and a Zorb obstacle course, where children can get into a large clear plastic sphere and steer their way around a track of slopes. The “Extreme Adventure” zone caters to both beginners and professionals in skateboarding, bike riding, and rollerblading. Think you’ve had fun this summer? Well, you haven’t seen anything yet!

PROJECT SPACE 4: DOHA ART MAP

GO: Project Space 4: Doha Art Map is ongoing throughout September at Mathaf: Arab Museum.

Project Space 4 presents a collaborative mapping experiment to locate spaces of art in Doha. A map of Doha is projected on the wall in Mathaf’s Project Space onto which places we experience art will be pinned by the public and the project’s curators. The project was conceived by local curators and educators from Katara Art Center, QMA Public Arts, and Mathaf in a recent curatorial workshop at the museum on the subject of critical practice. Identify where we see and experience art in Doha and discuss how these could become more generous to our needs, that’s what Doha Map asks us! If art is your passion or interest, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

Big Screen

The Maze Runner What’s it about: After his memory is erased, Thomas wakes up trapped in a massive maze, in a community of boys. He’s no memory of the outside world except from strange dreams about a mysterious organisation called W.C.K.D, and he soon begins to discover fragments of his past with clues in the maze. He must join forces with his fellow “runners” to uncover his true purpose and for a real shot at escaping! Director: Wes Ball Cast: Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Patricia Clarkson, Dave Batista, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan Why it’s worth watching? This is nothing like your typical literary adaptation. Oh no! The Maze Runner (based on the best-selling novel by James Dashner) is somewhat of a pinnacle as far as book to big screen productions go; the casting is near perfect, the special effects are spectacular, and, more importantly, all the favourite book moments are there. We must applaud the young cast for bringing honesty, heart and ferocity to the character they play. If you’ve read the book you’ll know that bringing the general horror of the maze to life, and to do the grandeur of it justice, would have been a mammoth task. But, Wes Ball and his team have far surpassed expectations to create an awesome backdrop for all the exciting moments. Fans of Dylan O’Brien’s work on Teen Wolf *swoon* and those looking for a world of escapism, rest assured that you won’t be burned by this one. For Twentieth century Fox this may well be one of the year’s biggest breakout hits.

ALTERNATIVE INDIE/ROCK

This is All Yours By ALT-J

One of the music industry’s true sleeper

successes, Alt-J return this month with their sophomore album This is All Yours. With fans in high places, this record even got the stamp of approval from Miley Cyrus who the English alt-rockers have given a shout out to on the album’s hypnotic lead track, Hunger of the Pine, which sampling Cyrus’ 4x4. Even with being involved in such celebrity circles, This is All Yours doesn’t take a wrecking ball to Alt-J’s indie credibility; the 14-track album still carries the familiar psychedelic sound that fans of the indie rockers know and love them for. Take Warm Foothills with its dense rhythms and a whistled refrain; the electric edge on The Gospel of John Hurt; and even the diverse, soul-rocker sounding Left Hand Free, all of these build on the distinctive dub-folk, alt-rock, indie-infused sound established on the band’s best-selling debut, An Awesome Wave. The humble exit of Guitarist-bassist Gwil Sainsbury, hasn’t thrown the remaining trio off their music game, and as they recently said in an interview, this album is “smart enough to be cool, but accessible enough that people like it.” We agree, completely! 34. fact magazine

Pop/R’N’B

My Everything By Ariana Grande Ok, so she dresses a little too grown for her age and has that same high pony hair going on, but credit to the Nickelodeon star, she has a decent voice and the knack to produce some really catchy tunes (we’ve had Problem in our heads all summer!). One thing’s for sure, in comparison to a lot of teen-pop singers, the Victorious actress has evolved massively. On My Everything there’s collabos with the likes of Zedd, Big Sean, The Weekend, and Childish Gambino to name but a few. Not one that we’d tell you to rush out and buy, but nonetheless, seriously good modern-day pop.

It’s no secret anymore that Robert Galbraith is indeed the pen name of best-selling Harry Potter author JK Rowling, and if you enjoyed her first attempt at writing a crime novel, The Cuckoo’s Calling, then you’ll most definitely enjoy The Silkworm. Returning to the pages is private detective Cormoran Strike and his young assistant Robin Ellacott. Together they are investigating the disappearance of novelist Owen Quine, a hunt that quickly takes a nasty and mysterious turn. If you love the adrenalin feeling of a race against time then you’ll love The Silkworm – a well-written, fast-paced, and compulsively entertaining read. It sure is a unique spin on the traditional British crime novel.

Junto

By Basement Jaxx The Jaxx duo are back and it’s about frickin’ time. Producers Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe had a chart-destroying run of hits in the 90s and 00s, and with the likes of Disclosure, Rudimental and Alunageorge taking influence, it’s only fitting that the two-piece returned to show the newbies how it’s done. We’re loving the club-ready Unicorn; the carnival beat on Power to the People; and the stomping piano chords on Never Say Never. With upbeat sounds, layering and looping, Junto is somewhat of a nod to the 90s, demonstrating the duo’s signature style and production prowess.

This is a collection of the journals, fiction, letters, and sketches of the late Esther Grace Earl, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 16 after battling cancer. Award-winning author John Green dedicated his bestselling novel The Fault in Our Stars to Esther as well. Sometimes it’s the books about real people that are wonderful to read. The 2014 Infiniti Q50 A super-stylish luxury sedan with a sublime interior and masses of power makes the Infiniti Q50 one of my favourites on the market today!

fact magazine .43

CITY RIDES

“The Q50 is a vast improvement. I love the front end, which has a much more aggressive and powerful look to it with those ‘frowning’ front lights and that large spoiler.”

The Infiniti Q50 is the replacement for the outgoing G Sedan, under Infiniti’s new model designation scheme where everything is Q-something. Whilst the G Sedan was a nice car, the exterior, in my humble opinion, was a little bland for a premium brand, which is supposed to appeal to the heart as well as the mind. The Q50 is a vast improvement. I love the front end, which has a much more aggressive and powerful look to it with those ‘frowning’ front lights and that large spoiler. In fact, it looks much sportier all round, with muscular contours and a sleek profile making it a very handsome car. Inside the good news continues, with a very stylish and luxurious interior boasting ample space front and back. A feature I particularly loved was the centre console. Instead of one touchscreen doing everything, Infiniti have decided to provide two. One is just a display for the Sat-Nav and general information, and the other is a smooth touchscreen panel integrated into the audio and AC controls that controls all the features of the car. It’s a really clean and eye-catching design, and one of my favourites in the market! And then there are the additional features, such as the adaptive cruise control, reverse parking cameras and excellent navigation system, which are really the icing on the cake. And now we come to the best part – the driving experience. I have driven the 44. fact magazine

outgoing G Sedan, and it was a lovely car – fast, powerful and smooth. But then, all premium cars are fast, powerful and smooth, and so there needs to be a little something extra, like sophisticated gadgetry, which is where the G Sedan felt like it was lacking a little. The Q50 addresses all of that. When you change the chassis setting to sport mode, you literally feel the entire car tighten up, as if it’s tensing itself ready to pounce. The suspension gets a little stiffer, to improve grip, although it doesn’t become hard to the point of jarring. The steering also tightens up and the response improves, so that you get more of a result from a little input of the wheel making for a much sportier feel, although it could do with a little more feedback from the front wheels. And, the throttle response noticeably improves too, so that when you put your foot down, the reaction is instant and brutal. It’s huge amounts of fun! This reaction is entirely down to the Q50’s immensely powerful 3.7l V6, which puts out 328hp and 365Nm of torque through the all-wheel-drive system of the model we drove. The acceleration is ferocious, and being naturally-aspirated there’s an instant power delivery at whatever speed you’re travelling when you hit the gas. What I love about the Q50 is that, in a world where turbos are increasingly being used on smaller engines as the eco-friendly efficient option for power, the Q50 still

“The new 2014 Q50 keeps the power and the comfort, but adds a heady dose of technology, refinement and style...”

feels like a muscle car. As they say, there’s no replacement for displacement! The G Sedan was fast, powerful and smooth, but was overshadowed by its German rivals. The new 2014 Q50 keeps the power and the comfort, but adds a heady dose of technology, refinement and style to make it a dangerous competitor in a tough segment. I was truly impressed!

The Audi A3 Sedan fact magazine .47

L CITY RIDES

The A3 Sedan succeeds where the A1 failed – it provides a compact offering from the premium German automaker that people in this region are willing to buy!

48. fact magazine

W

e should start by saying that the A1 failed through no fault of its own. Having driven it, we can tell you that it is a superb little car – nippy, agile and hugely fun to drive. However, it just has one major problem: it’s a hatchback! And hatchbacks, as we all know, are an extremely tough sell in the Gulf. Enter the Audi A3 Sedan, unveiled last year at the New York Motor Show. Traditionally, the A3 was always a hatch too, with some cabrio offerings, but now Audi have launched the sedan to tempt the US and Middle Eastern markets. And tempting the A3 Sedan truly is, especially with the S-Line package with S-Tronic automatic transmission as featured on our demo. Compact, and yet extremely sporty, its squat stance with short overhangs, large front air scoops and ‘duck tail’ contoured rear spoiler, all give the impression of a touring car rather than a compact family sedan. And inside the good news continues. Audi haven’t made the mistake of making the A3 look like a ‘budget’ Audi – it’s just as stylish and luxurious as an A4 or A6, with leather seats, the excellent Audi infotainment system with retractable screen,

and so on. And the magic of the A3 is that it feels as spacious as an A4 or A6 inside too – you don’t feel cramped at all, even in the back seat, although things might get tight if four adults over 6ft occupied the car, and the front seats had to be further back. There are even little bonuses that make the A3 stand out, like the rather cool AC vents that you see pictured. Our demo boasted the 1.8-litre 40 TFSI turbocharged inline-four engine, which puts out 180km/h, reached 100km/h in 6.8 seconds, and maxed out at a respectable 232km/h. It works with the Audi valvelift system and intelligent thermal management, so that more torque is generated at low engine speed by switching between two exhaust cam contours. The effects are impressive – the A3 Sedan 40 TFSI is very quick off the mark, with a real boost kicking in from that turbo.

This is combined with an excellent chassis that grips the road like a limpet, while still managing to soak up potholes and rough surfaces, making the car a huge amount of fun to drive. However, it’s far from a GT, as the power does taper off when you get to higher speeds, which makes acceleration over 140km/h a little lethargic. However, given that in Qatar you’re not ever supposed to be travelling at those speeds, this doesn’t matter, does it? Of course not… So, what you have is a car that is compact and easy to park, and yet spacious and comfortable inside; fuel-efficient, and yet very fun to drive; great acceleration from standstill, but not at speeds above 140km/h; highly agile and manoeuvrable, but still smooth over bumps; stylish and luxurious, with that premium German badge, and yet affordable; practical, with four seats and decent boot space, though not enough to carry holiday luggage for a whole family. So there you have it – the perfect car for someone living in Qatar!

By utilising higher quality materials, the cabin shows a notable improvement over previous generation models.

CITY RIDES

2014 Toyota Yaris Sedan The third generation of Toyota’s hugely popular subcompact economy sedan gets a complete overhaul, with a new exterior, interior and engine.

50. fact magazine

Y

ou’ve got to admire the Yaris for its simplicity. It doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. It doesn’t have all kinds of expensive and complicated gadgetry like rear parking cameras, quad-zone air-conditioning and satellite navigation, because that isn’t what this car is all about. What this car is about is affordability, and all those gadgets would simply make it too costly. When you climb into a Yaris, you know exactly what to expect, and that is easy-to-use driver functions, and very inexpensive maintenance costs. However, in today’s extremely competitive market, where there are many affordable compact cars to choose from, just being inexpensive isn’t enough. It also has to be comfortable, stylish, and offer a few surprises to get people to sign on the dotted line.

And this is where the new Yaris Sedan has been successful. The exterior styling is instantly more appealing that the predecessor, and it definitely looks bigger, taking design cues from its older brother, the Corolla. And on the inside, while the standard features are pretty much the same – CD/stereo, air-conditioning and so on – there are little bonuses like steering-wheel mounted volume controls, auxiliary jack and USB port for your MP3 player, and faux-leather stitching on the dashboard and doors as well as chrome accents that give the interior a slightly more upmarket feel as a whole. It’s also comfortable and surprisingly spacious in both the front and the rear, and you get a centre armrest with storage underneath as standard, which is always a bonus for me. You’ve gotta have somewhere to rest that elbow, after all! As for engine options, you get to choose between a 1.3l and a 1.5l inlinefour cylinder engine. Both are extremely economical, as you’d expect. The 1.3l we drove barely touched the fuel in the several hours we had it. However, it also seriously lacked in grunt, so we’d recommend the 1.5l, which will pack a little more punch whilst still going easy on the fuel. Ride quality is good, and they’ve also introduced added sound proofing to reduce engine and road noise in the passenger cabin, which all combines to make the Yaris surprisingly comfortable for a car in this class. They say in this life that you get what you pay for, but I don’t think that’s always the case. Yes, it’s true that if you pay for an economy car you get low-frills motoring, but I think in the case of the new Yaris you actually get a bit more than that!

Canon G1 X Mark II It’s been described as the beast of the compact cameras boasting pro features for amateur photographers. To find out how true that is, Shabana Adam went to the UAE’s stunning Sir Bani Yas Island, to test Canon’s new line of products including this flagship model… Working on editorial for a magazine amounts to a fair bit of pressure when it comes to finding excellent hi-res images; from food to travel, arts and motoring, my monthly challenge is to make sure that the pictures, passed onto our talented design team, are nothing short of pixel perfect. That’s what spurred my interest in the Canon Summer Arabia media trip to Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island, Al Sahel Villa Resort, just off the shores of Abu Dhabi (a night in a beautiful villa was, of course, an added bonus!). Canon Middle East’s exclusive media trip involved a group of around 20 bloggers and writers from the region’s top print and online publications, invited for a one-night stay including various workshop type activities. The tech giant used this opportunity to introduce a whole new range of hero products; the EOS 1200D, the PowerShot SX700 HS, the IXUS 155, the Legria Mini X, and what we found to be the standout of them all, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II. Testing the PowerShot G1 X Mark II was a blast to say the least. Following the creative theme of ‘Perfect Pictures this Summer, Whatever Happens’ we embarked on a wildlife and nature safari drive

followed by a cookery class, to put this group of cameras through its paces. Immediately, the PowerShot GI X Mark II, made a great impact on everyone who handled the camera. Its DSLR-standard performance packed in a compact body helped to deliver pristine image quality. The ease of form and functions, for even an amateur photographer like myself, was hugely appealing – a result of features engineered using feedback from professional photographers. Taking pictures of giraffes on the move, cheetahs lazing in the wadi, and gazelles gliding through the trees, is a challenging task in itself. However, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II made it possible to capture a variety of images from a range of perspectives. Portraits appear with a professional touch and macro photography is made easier with a large 1.5-type Canon CMOS sensor, which delivers shallow depth of field, comparable to an APS-C size DSLR sensor. Aside from this, it features a new super-bright f/2.03.9 lens, which maintains a wide f/3.9 aperture even when fully zoomed, delivering excellent low-light performance and the ability to control depth of field.

01. Oryx take rest on the desert plains of Bani Yas island; 02. The colourful wadi landscape that makes the perfect path for a nature and wildlife drive

The camera enabled a great, sharp focus on both the wildlife and its background, and its ability to lock onto subjects more accurately, when creating images with shallow depth of field, is further enhanced by an improved AiAF System with 31 AF points, compared to the PowerShot G1X’s nine. Basically, a compact camera with all the added benefits of a DSLR – what more can you ask for? The capabilities of the PowerShot GI X Mark II are unparalleled, offering outstanding performance and easy-to-use functions. You don’t have to be a seasoned pro to get to grips with this camera, a beautiful setting and a passion for photography is all you need! Available to buy at all major electronic stores.

TIPS Jason Rego, Retail Marketing Manager, Canon Middle East

KNOW your gear

Know what the minimum shutter speed is at which you can obtain a sharp image. The really great action-packed moments in wildlife photography last on average between 5 and 20 seconds.

WORK the light

03

02

Since photography is all about painting with light, you need to know how to use the light to your best advantage. If you adhere to tip #1 (Know your Gear) you can get some pretty interesting images from a less-than-ideal light position.

04

SHOOT WIDER shoot closer

03. Grazing gazelles look into the camera; 04. Giraffes take shade from the afternoon heat.

Challenge yourself to shoot at a wider angle to give a better idea of where you took the image and where your subject has to carve out a living in the wild. This applies to any species photographed. fact magazine .55

CHEF SHAUN DEJEET

Known for its juicy cuts of prime beef and super-fresh seafood, The Grill has seen a recent revamp with its popular menu and we went to meet the man behind the delicious food‌

he capital’s food scene has become a scurry of culinary hybrids, abundant with flashy restaurants and tempting offers left and right; if not careful one will definitely end up caught in a battle of the dishes between the different kitchens. Surprisingly though, those who win seem not to be the snobby new kids on the block, but the old and sturdy favourites that have been around for some time. And that’s exactly what the Grand Hyatt Doha offers with The Grill. A Doha institution famous for its stupendous brunches, reserved for months on end, this city hotspot is proving there’s more to its food with the help of their Canadian Chef de Cuisine. Although he’s only been here for the past six months, Chef Shaun Dejeet has already left his mark on the kitchen working his culinary magic behind the scenes. “It all started for me back when I was twelve years old and I started making cheesecakes,” he tells us, “The art of creating on a plate is what got me into cooking.” Starting at the bottom as all great chefs do, Dejeet worked his way up from washing dishes to working in a family

restaurant before joining the Culinary Institute of Canada. Bouncing between the United States and Canada, he worked under numerous well-known chefs with stints in hotels such as Fairmont Chateau Whistler to Relais & Chateaux. “I met my wife on the job and a few years after we moved to Australia,” he grins at us, “I loved it there, working on the beach with fresh ingredients. It was the best.” And now, with Doha as his base for the moment, the lucky people in town can get a piece of the much sought after chef. And what better place for him to spread his culinary muscles than at The Grill! “Here at the restaurant we are trying to incorporate any local produce. Whatever I can get my hands on, I try and put on the menu,” Chef Dejeet explains, “From Qatari duck to regional dates, the less carbon footprint the better.” A chef with a conscious is definitely a limited commodity to find these days, one that in this time and age of pollution and food waste is heart warming and nice to see. An avid gardener, he takes inspiration from whatever he can find, “I like to pick what I have and cook it.” A quick tour

around his working station and a few hellos to his team, he treats us to what we have been waiting for; a taste of his skills and a peak at the new additions to what has become a tantalizing menu for the senses here at The Grill. Although the restaurant is known around town for its steak tartare, wagyu tenderloin and signature short ribs, Chef Dejeet is proving that they are a tough competitor when it comes to non-meat options too. He starts us off with a local kingfish ceviche, a South American staple of fresh raw fish cured in citrus juices.

Seasoned with salt, he marries it beautifully with sweet watermelon, house-pickled chili and fresh coriander. Continuing with the seafood theme, he preps a beautiful appetiser of seared scallops, that come gently nestled on a bed of deep red Spanish pepper puree topped with cherry vinegar and a side of shaved zucchini in butter sauce. Sweet, rich and delicate this dish disappears off the plate in no time. Thinking to ourselves that he cannot possibly top the prior two, we wonder what Dejeet has up his sleeve for the main. And once again we are happily surprised to see he’s gone for something other than steak, treating us with the all time classic French favourite, duck. Succulent, tender and cooked to perfection, medium rare of course, every bite melted away like it was butter. The squash puree and pickled onions that come with it are no joke either, acting as the perfect tools, light and airy, to take away from the fat and richness of the meat. Onto dessert, and to finish off a tasting menu like no other, we’re 68. fact magazine

treated to a traditional favourite, chocolate fondant. A decadent way to end a meal, thee warm miniature cake lightly opens up to a flowing river of chocolate goodness that, once combined, with the Dolce Dulce crumbles and vanilla ice cream, had us finishing every last drop. Needless to say we left the place with full bellies and another trip scheduled! GO: For more information and reservations call +974 4448 1240.

n Paris, the bistro is an institution; the cosy, modest atmosphere, chance for people watching and French fare is what has diners coming back for more. You can say a lot of it is based on the nostalgia for a certain type of glamour, one that can be easily attained, yet, at the same time, remain friendly on today’s ever-burdened wallet. Enter La Varenne, a French-style brasserie that has grown to be a cult favourite on the Doha food scene. Traditional yet contemporary, sophisticated yet edgy and with a penchant for easy-to-navigate menus that are printed daily, La Varenne combines the clever hallmarks of a eatery that knows what it’s doing, rather than another venue that’s trying too hard to get noticed. With hearty dishes, an impressive clientele and easy contemporary styling it offers the perfect setting for a quick delicious meal and catchup. No wonder the city’s businessmen and

women can be found here come lunchtime, where the place is packed with a vibrant bustling atmosphere, making reservations a must if you want to get a table! But forget about lunch, the true star and what only regulars know is that you can also come here for breakfast from 7am to 10:30am. Call it our favourite spot for an early morning rendezvous; La Varenne has certainly made sure that it’s first in line once the word breakfast is spoken. With warm aromas of coffee beans gently brewing in the kitchen, the French eatery promises a dejeuner worthy of any Parisian. Make sure you arrive early to grab one of the tables at the fantastic wall-to-wall windows – the views over West Bay are criminally beautiful.

Once you’re settled in, you can make your own breakfast menu by starting off with your choice of morning beverage; be it a fresh juice or your preferred caffeine drink alongside a mixed basket of the house’s special just-baked French breads, pastries and Viennoiserie. And that’s just the start; you can then choose between several menus including Healthy (the least expensive), Baked (think fluffy French toast topped with blueberry compote) and Hot (poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and English muffins). Not one to be tied down by à la carte options? There’s also the alternative of ordering from the entire menu. We highly recommend the Arabic Breakfast, oriental yet light with grilled aubergines stuffed with ricotta and zaatar, or for those who’ve woken up with an appetite, then the House Special is definitely worth tackling; veal sausage, beef bacon, home fries, beans and eggs make up this hefty breakfast dish. Although the preparation and presentation of food at La Varenne is simple, the products are high quality (think organic eggs, fresh fruit juices and breads that have just come out of the oven baked by the in house pastry chef ). One word: YUMMY!

IN THE KITCHEN

Cucina de BAdir

For the next chapter of La Cucina De Badir, we embarked on a journey to Sardinia, Italy right here in the heart of Doha at the Ritz Carlton’s Porcini restaurant. Greeted by a smiling Chef Danielle, we didn’t waste any time and went straight up to the kitchen, forgoing the apron this month for a super cool chef ’s jacket, ready for a great session of Sunday cooking. This is how it went down...

P

repping our workstation before we got started, Chef Danielle surprised me with details of our first dish; we were going to be making Octopus Carpaccio. Over excited, I chopped up some carrots, celery, onions, laurel leaf and black pepper corns, we emptied the bunch into a hot pot of water and dunked in our beautiful octopus as well. Leaving it to cook for the next hour, we moved on to preparing culurgiones with lobster and shallots. A famous traditional Sardinian stuffed dough pocket, culurgiones are a little tricky to make as the stitching process requires a little practice. We started by kneading our dough, then cleaning up our shallots and lobster, chopped up some garlic cloves and parsley, then added a bit of lemon, olive oil, salt and pepper for our stuffing. Now that we had our pasta and filling for the culurgiones, we proceeded with shaping and prepping the lovely dumplings, making sure both ends were sealed properly. We decided to make a batch of fresh pasta to go along our dish, so we hit the pasta machine and used the left over dough to make some beautiful sheets of fettuccine. A simple tomato sauce, with garlic, basil and our second dish is done. Checking up on our octopus, we let it cool off for a while so as not to lose all the yummy flavours we had built. To finish this dish we wrapped it up in plastic paper, and then froze it over night; a little trick to keep the flavours in and

make them more concentrated. The next day, we opened it up and sliced it super thin using a slicing machine, then we laid it out gently onto our plate, garnishing it with some beautiful plump cherry tomatoes, wild peppery Italian rocket and a hint of balsamic vinegar reduction with some salt and pepper to taste. For our 3rd dish, we decided to carry on with some more fish, going for an Italian favourite Salmone In Crosta. Starting off with the crust, we toasted some ciabatta bread, thyme, parsley, garlic, almonds, olive oil, salt and pepper, putting the mix in a food processor to blend. We then cut our salmon and started making our crust by covering the top of our fish with our mix, then it was off to the oven. Last but not least, was our dessert, not my forte but I was willing and ready for the challenge. Chef Danielle chose to make their bestselling Semifreddo Al Caffee, which he started whipping in a frenzy. A few minutes of sugar, mascarpone cheese, coffee, gelatine sheets, cinnamon biscuits and egg yolks later we had us a fluffy mouth-watering sweet dish that was devoured by the entire team. A cooking success!

GOING NUTS at the Four Seasons Doha

Jumping at the chance to get a whiff of her favourite as well as get some essential R’n’R, Dina Kabbani checked herself into the luxury haven to f ind out if this could really be the best-smelling release of the summer! Read on to f ind out what happens when you send a coconutobsessed editor for a 2hour tropical spa treatment…

G

oing back to work after the summer break is never easy; after all, who wants to bid adieu to sun-kissed beaches, carefree days and al fresco dinners? So you can only imagine the grin on my face when word got around the office that there was a spa review up for grabs, one that revolved purely and solely around coconuts. People went loco, but alas, after much squabbling and a few heated words exchanged here and there, I came out victorious; being the coconut queen herself, I wouldn’t have had it any other way! You might not know this about me, but I have some what an obsession with the tropical fruit; pay a visit to my beauty case and bathroom shelves and every product has coconut listed in it’s ingredients. Now fast forward to the day off, and I’m bouncing towards what

promises to be an exotic escape at city favourite spa, the Four Seasons Doha. Pat, my pretty Thai masseuse, checked me into the beautiful treatment suite, complete with a bubbling Jacuzzi, rainfall shower and meditative music. As I sit down to begin with a warm foot wash, I already feel my woes being left behind at the door; the zen like atmosphere and Pat’s soothing voice as she explains that coconut will be the main ingredient of this luxurious treatment, are already helping me unwind. It’s off to the day bed, where I get a gentle full body scrub with a coconut infused concoction, followed by a warm shower inside the gorgeous bathroom, leaving me softer than I’ve ever been. A relaxing body coconut massage using warm coconut butter with a range of relaxing, calming movements follows, then Pat moves on to my scalp, which she treats to a gentle relaxing massage. I’m awakened after 2hours of pure bliss to be led to the relaxation room for yes, you guessed it, some delicious coconut-infused treats. My conclusion? Cocolicious is every bit as pampering, tropical and simply irresistible as the brochure says it is; highly recommended if you’re missing those summer hols already! fact magazine .87

Doha Insider

Describe your ideal day off in the city…

your three favourite dining spots in Doha and why…

What’s your one secret spot to visit in Doha?

I’d go to the spa with my sister and spend quality time together. Then play with my lovely niece and go out for a walk (when the weather allows it!).

The first one will be Caminito Restaurant at Zubarah Boutique Hotel. The food is just AMAZING, the service is lovely since the staff is actually from Argentina, so for me, being a Latino, it makes a lot of difference. Also, you can find Peruvian ceviche and causa limenha - two of my favourites dishes from my country. The second dining spot will be Al Saha, Lebanese restaurant. It has very tasty food and they have some of the best hummus in town as well as shawarma. Third will be Le Spagetto for nice Italian food.

Café ceramic, I just love that place, since I find it very relaxing and entertaining to do your own ceramics.
