Electronic Music Goes Next Level If you’re a fan of quality electronic music and cool party vibes, you might want to take note of Next Level,a new movement that’s making electro sounds more accessible for crowds in Doha.FACT talks to one of the organisers, Marijana Maki to learn more… For anyone who doesn’t know, what is Next Level? Next Level is a movement born from a vision to promote all forms of quality electronic music: Deep house, Tech-house, Deep techno, Techno, Minimal techno and Drum ‘n’ Bass. By organising events in clubs and private parties, promoting DJs to other venues and sharing this music online, we are actively bringing this music closer to people. Our motto is spreading the good vibes! How is Next Level different from its competitors? There is no known competition for what we do. So far the DJs were the only ones who promoted this type of music, playing at various venues. You had to follow each DJ to be able to listen to this music, which means going from one venue to another and for a majority of people that is not an easy task; we are already preoccupied with our daily lives for personal things, so doing a schedule for our free time would just take the fun out of it. But by making one venue, which will be known for underground music, we are providing a home for all of us electronic music fans. If there was competition, we would be known for our constant striving towards quality in sound and good flow of the music. There is no room for anything commercial. We believe in working together, not against each other. Where did the idea for Next Level come from? It started purely from our mutual passion for music. We’re a team of friends - DJs, producers, promoters, visual artists and sound engineers who have lived in Doha long enough to experience everything the city has to offer. We are constantly hanging out together and exchanging ideas and knowledge. It started by organising private parties and soon became a profession. We wanted to provide a place for DJs where they will be respected and a place for the guests where they can truly enjoy underground 16

music through quality sound systems. Where can people find out more on Next Level? We have a Facebook Page “Next Level” which is easily recognisable by our unique “one way sign” logo, there you can find updates about the events and podcasts from our DJs. Our website www. gotonextlvl.com is currently under maintenance. Also, first Thursday of every month you can find us in completely renovated club Fabric at the Grand Regal Hotel. By subscribing to our events on the Facebook Page you will be getting updates about all our future events. What services does Next Level offer? Entertainment events, social events, private functions and turnkey event project management. Where can people listen to your music? You can find our music on the Next Level Facebook page. On the first of every month we release a podcast which is linked on the YouTube channel, Mixcloud and Soundcloud. On August 1, we released a podcast with 2Legit (YouTube: 2Legit NextLevel podcast 001). On September 1, we are releasing ChrisPen NextLevel podcast 002. What does Next Level hope to achieve? Bringing international DJs to Doha and sending our DJs outside of Qatar. Our aim is to contribute to the ever-growing musical scene and we’re reaching out to all of you who truly appreciate good music and good vibes. In short, the plan is to bring Doha to the next level. ✤

exclusive Interview

He’s known everywhere as the world’s fastest man, and his charming persona, as well as the signature thunderbolt move, has gained him millions of fans from all around the globe! Now, Jamaica’s finest, Usain Bolt is helping sport’s brand PUMA launch its second major Forever Faster campaign for AW15, with a dedicated focus on Training. Offering up the question “What are you training for?” the renowned sports brand challenges individuals and teams to put more energy into training and more positivity back into sport. FACT caught up with the Olympic champion to talk training routine, eating habits and inspirations… PUMA’s take on training is that it’s not an end goal but rather a means to a more positive self and a stronger game. The more energy you put in, the more you get back. PUMA Training swaps excuses for endorphins and aims to be faster, stronger, and fiercer. No matter what. Bringing PUMA’s second major Forever Faster campaign to life are the unique training stories documented on film of PUMA’s elite ambassadors – World’s Fastest Man Usain Bolt, multi-platinum recording artist Rihanna, star striker Sergio Agüero, Arsenal Football Club, the Cuban National Boxing team, and more. Shot over the course of four weeks, the film series offers a sneak peak into the training regimen these individuals undergo to make sure they are on top of their game. It intimately captures their motivations and tactics to constantly improve and elevate every game they play with energy, excellence, and enthusiasm. Supporting them is PUMA’s latest in its IGNITE franchise: the IGNITE XT. This high intensity training shoe’s responsive design maximises energy and movement throughout the campaign. We got a glimpse of the campaign in an exclusive chat with Usain Bolt…

How often do you train in a year? UB: I train for 11 months of the year, six days a week. Normally in the morning and then again in the afternoon. It’s a lot of work. What does training do for you other than the physical abilities? UB: Training gives you confidence and this helps your state of mind. I know if I’m in good shape, it’s going to be very hard to beat me, this confidence is very important in performing well. What kind of obstacles have you faced and overcome to achieve your goals? UB: In elite sport injury is always the thing that can slow you down. We push our bodies to the max and sometimes we get a sore or injured muscle or joints. I had several injuries in my career but fortunately I have a good coach and team to help me get back to the top. ➻

How do you train for speed? Any specific tips for training to become faster? UB: There are many things that help someone run faster – conditioning, strength, speed, power, technique etc. It is not just one factor. You have to train in a variety of ways and cover all the aspects. What’s a typical training session for you? UB: There isn’t really a typical session – training for me is either on the track or in the gym. It depends on the time of year and what we are working on. On the track it can be working on everything from endurance to any technical aspect of my race – the start, the drive phase, the transition for both the 100m and 200m. In the gym it’s general conditioning, strength and power.

exclusive Interview

Any particular food and drink that help you when you’re training? UB: I have a good diet now; I have a chef who helps me eat well. A lot of chicken, rice, vegetables. Good Jamaican food. It is also important to be well hydrated. What’s your advice for someone who’s struggling to find motivation to reach their goals? UB: You have to find that one thing that you know is going to motivate you. You might not enjoy training for example but you have to love competing and winning. If you want these things you have to be determined and train hard. Has training changed a lot for you in the past few years? UB: When I started running as a kid, it was fun – I was good at it so I just did it. I didn’t really have to train that much to win races. As I got older I realised that I have to take better care of my body. Now diet, rest, recovery etc is more important than a few years ago. What’s your single-most greatest goal ever? UB: Well, my single greatest goal is to become the greatest, pretty much. That’s what I work towards. I 22

fact magazine

want to be remembered as a great sportsman, to have a place in history. Which other athlete inspires you to become better? UB: I have always admired Kevin Garnett as he is a player that whether winning or losing he gives his all and inspires those around him to raise their game. Also my mentor and coach Glen Mills. He used to tell me, “Everybody on the circuit, everybody at the Championships are talented athletes already. It’s the work you put in that makes you a champion, or better that the other talented person.” ✤

Part of this integrated training campaign is the new PUMA PACT, a consumer engagement platform available through the PUMATRAC running app and puma.com/training, shareable through social media. It drives the brand’s rally cry, #NoMatterWhat, and guides consumers with the tools and motivation they would need in their commitment to make themselves faster, stronger and fiercer. The PACT will see PUMA’s elite ambassadors leading and inspiring consumers to train harder like them, #NoMatterWhat. From the magical mosques of Istanbul to the pseudo-moonscapes of Cappadocia, and from the vibrant cityscapes of Doha to the shifting sands of the Qatari desert; four photographers from two different Muslim nations documented their journeys as moments captured in time, engaging in an inspiring exchange of artistic discovery and cultural dialogue. Their aim was to capture real people in their natural environments. The photography exhibition Artistic Journeys: New Angles; New Perspectives, is a unique visual interpretation of this year’s Qatar Turkey 2015: Year of Culture. In collaboration with the Qatar Photographic Society (QPS), the Qatari and Turkish Ministries of Culture and See My Culture, and sponsored by Exxonmobil, Qatar Airways and W Doha, Qatar Turkey 2015: sent two Qatari photographers, Sara Al Obaidly and Saleh Al Marri, on an expedition in Turkey to snap its landscapes, people, food, culture, and touristic highlights. The aim was to capture the essence of Turkey through Qatari eyes. Immersed in the day-to-day lives of families and artisans, the photographers enjoyed a rare opportunity to photograph Turkey, among its ethnic and geographic diversity. From the vibrant quarters of Istanbul to the cave houses of Cappadocia, from bustling bazaars to peaceful mosques and sumptuous palaces, they went behind the scenes to interpret, in images, Turkey’s rich culture and history as it is in the heart of its people. This photography exhibition will also showcase the best works of the two Turkish photographers - Ali Muhammet Bayraktariglu and Hasan Yelken – who were invited to journey across the Arabian Peninsula to experience Qatar through Turkish eyes. The results were spectacular and this exhibition showcases the best photographs taken during both trips. Reflecting on the exchange programme, Safiya al Hajari, Director of the Qatar Museums’ Office of Strategic Cultural Relations, says: “Both countries are home to rich and diverse cultural practices. The aim for such a cultural exchange is to capture both Turkish and Qatari cultural identities through the artistic expression of photographers. Such an exchange is at the heart of Qatar Turkey 2015: Year of Culture mission,” she adds.

Sara Al Obaidly

Sara is a portrait and documentary photographer from Doha, Qatar. She completed her education in England, where she received her BA and MA at The University of Brighton. Confronting contemporary political, philosophical and social issues, with a clear and incisive vision, Sara presents the intimate moments of human emotion through portraiture and a wider view of the region and its intricacies in her landscape compositions. Recently commissioned by Qatar Museums, Sara’s work Qatar: Old Hearts, New World was showcased in an exhibition of Qatari and Brazilian artists Huna Hunak (Here There) as part of the Qatar Brazil 2014: Year of Culture. Sara has been shortlisted for the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Award in 2014 and her piece, Together We Stand, was an exhibit at The National Portrait Gallery, London until February 2015. Her works were also shortlisted for the Association of Photographers (AOP) Award and The Al Thani Award. ➻

From the rule of the Central Asian Saljuq Dynasty in the 11th century until the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century, Turkey was the cradle as well as the crossroads of a rich variety of Islamic Art, made for sultans and viziers as well as ordinary patrons. A self-guided tour at MIA will reveal some of the most beautiful and important works of Turkish art, all you have to do is get down to the museum, pick up a pamphlet and get started! Turkish art shows a distinctive cosmopolitanism, influenced and shaped not only by its Islamic heritage but also its pre-Islamic Byzantine and Armenian Christian roots and by neighbouring Persian and Mesopotamian cultures. With so much influence, Turkish art has taken many impressive forms over the years. Here are some of the prominent pieces to look out for. 40

01. Three Star ‘Holbein’ Carpet Ottoman, 15th century
| Wool, pile weaving This early Ottoman carpet acquired its
name from art historians who identified the presence of carpets bearing a similar design in the paintings of Hans Holbein the Younger. Wool carpets from Anatolia were exported
to Europe in the 15th century and feature in a number of Renaissance-era paintings as luxurious decorations for altars and thrones. See it: CA.78 in Islamic Art Gallery, Floor 2.

02. Brocaded Velvet Textile Ottoman, 16th century
| Velvet, silk, metal thread This brocaded velvet is decorated with the same motif as the cintamani tile (TI.2.1997) also displayed in this gallery. The cintamani motif was considered to bring good luck and was often embroidered into luxury textiles, such as this one. Such textiles were worn by members of the Ottoman court and other

04

wealthy elites of the Ottoman Empire. See it: TE.29.1998 in Pattern Gallery, Floor 2.

03. Iznik Border Tile Ottoman, 16th century | Fritware, pigments The so-called cintamani design on this tile, comprising three circles and two wavy lines,
is a common Ottoman motif. Cintamani means “auspicious jewel” in Sanskrit and in Buddhist iconography the motif represented auspicious flaming pearls. In the Ottoman context it became symbolic of strength and power
from an association with tiger stripes and leopard spots. See it: T1.2.1997 in Pattern Gallery, Floor 2.

04. Dragons in Saz leaves Ottoman, 16th century | Ink on coloured paper This Ottoman illustration features dragons confronting a simurgh emerging from saz leaves with two seal impressions. The representation in “saz-style” is quite common at the Ottoman court

in the 16th century. The saz-style compositions combine in a drawing two symbols: the stylised leaf and the dragon. The most important artist and pioneer of this style is Shah Quli (d. 15551556) who was the head of the atelier of Suleyman the Magnificent and was well known for his drawings of dragons. See it: MIA.2013.155 in The Figure in Art Gallery, Floor 2.

05. Eskenazi Four-Animal Carpet Ottoman, 14th-15th century | Pile weaving, wool This carpet belongs to a small group of carpets which are said to be found in Central Asia. Their common features are images of stylised quadruped animals placed against
a red background and borders decorated with pseudo-Kufic ornaments. The schematic images do not allow a firm identification
of the depicted creatures. According to carbon dating, these carpets were produced in the 14th century - at a time when the huge territory from China to the Danube River was unified

07

under Mongol rule. See it: CA.77 in the Iran and Central Asia Gallery, Floor 3.

06. Maqta’ Ottoman, 18th or 19th century | Ivory
Made of delicately carved ivory, this object was used as a cutting board for calligraphy pens. The pens, which were made of hardened reeds, had to be cut with a great deal of precision, and this required a firm surface for cutting. The Ottomans excelled in the art of calligraphy, and the many objects that accompanied the calligraphic process, such as ink stands, pen cases, and slabs of ivory for cutting pens, were often elaborately decorated. See it: IV.56.2000 in Writing in Art Gallery, Floor 2.

07. Iznik Dish Ottoman, Early 17th century | Fritware, pigment The motif of a chained leopard on this Iznik dish, set in a garden of roses and carnations, may

be traced to Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. It appropriates an earlier Yuan dynasty (14th century) bowl bearing the image of a mythical creature known as a qilin, set against a mountain backdrop. See it: PO.124.1999 in The Figure in Art Gallery, Floor 2.

08. Door Saljuq Sultanate, 13th century | Walnut wood This set of intricately carved wooden doors were produced in Konya during the Saljuqs of Rum dynasty, which ruled in Anatolia
from 1077– 1307 CE, and this object most probably dates from around 1298 CE. The inscription in the upper panels reads: “al-aqil man waazatihu altajarib wa al-jahil man la yufakir fil-awaqib” In English translation: “The wise one is he who has learnt a lesson from experience. And the ignorant one is he who does not think of the consequences.” See it: WW.56.2003 in the Iran and Central Asia Gallery, Floor 3. ✤ fact magazine

hen I think of abstract art, I think of art in its purest form – beautiful and raw. It’s more than just a painting; it’s the artist’s representation of what they see. An expressive message is brought onto the canvas, making the piece of art personal and with endless possibilities. The lovely artist we’re bringing you this month is Natasha Kowalski, who produces brilliant abstract pieces. Natasha paints abstract using liquid acrylic inks to create multiple layers in combination with intricate patterns. “It’s a sensory experience and a visual journey,” she says. Natasha loves to travel and finds her source of inspiration while she explores new places. “Recently I visited New York and stayed in Chelsea, an art-centric neighbourhood packed with inspiration,” she recalls. “I was lucky to have a local music producer introduce me to the underground jazz scene, where I spent a week exploring jazz clubs.” Natasha learned a lot about the music industry and left New York with a notepad of sketches and new project ideas. Strongly inspired by music and literature, you’ll see traces of Rachmaninov and Debussy in her paintings, fuelled by emotion and orchestral colour. “At the moment I’m obsessed with Rachmaninov’s Prelude in G Minor, Op.23, No.5, it helps me tune out from the noise in the world and focus on my creative process,” she explains. Natasha is originally from Australia and has been living in Abu Dhabi for the past six months. Her aunt, who is also an artist, had a great influence on Natasha

Arts interview

“Each morning when I wake up, I add a huge dose of creativity, rebellion, and determination to my agenda. I also delete the words ‘fear’ and ‘self doubt’ from my personal dictionary. Fear will only inhibit you.” from a very young age. They would visit art galleries together and study the different techniques of influential artists. We’re not surprised to learn then, that Natasha has a traditional Fine Arts degree and Masters of Design Science from Sydney University, Australia. With immense knowledge of, and experience in, the field of art, was it tough for Natsaha to decide which creative style to choose? Her background in Fine Arts sharpened her skills at creating representational art as the years passed. “Representational Art is an essential tool for all abstract artists,” Natasha says. “After mastering those skills, I decided to explore alternate methods for interpreting the world, beyond literal representation.” Colours play a major role in abstract art, as much of the time they represent the emotions in a piece. Each colour has its own meaning and is used differently by

each artist. And colour is one thing that is so vividly eye-catching in Natasha’s work, who reveals that she majored in colour theory during her Masters, and was always fascinated by the psychology of colour. She says: “Colour is integral to my compositions. My paintings explore the influence of colour on the human psyche. Colour greatly influences human emotions, especially when used in certain combinations, the viewer gains a personal experience and has a unique connection with the work,” she says. Having a portfolio of such strong and characterful pieces, I ask Natasha if she has a favourite, and to my surprise, yes she does! “Inkscapes, my latest collection is a visual expression of my experiences in the Middle East,” she says. “Inkscape #1 is close to my heart.” It was the first large scale painting she produced, and the first piece she sold. “It was a beautiful moment when the client sent me a picture of it in her living room,” she adds. Natasha is an artist who adds a great personal touch to her artwork, with a note on the back of every painting, in the form of a puzzle. She writes it in a poetic manner which strongly shows her love for writing and literature, too. “In a recent painting of mine I wrote: ‘I wasn’t sure what I thought of you so I thought I should paint it.’ It’s a secret puzzle for the owner of the piece,” she reveals. This is definitely an endearing gesture by an artist. So, what would Natasha advise young, budding artists? “Determination is essential because you will get a lot of rejections,” she admits. “Giving up is only a missed opportunity. Ignore anyone who tells you to get a ‘real’ job. This is your real job! Many people don’t believe it’s possible to follow your life’s passion and make a success. Don’t let their insecurities inhibit your dreams,” she says. As far as abstract art goes, Natasha is one mega-talented woman with bucket loads of determination and love for what she does, and I love how she keeps her love for literature and poetry alive in her colourful creations – way to go! ➻ fact magazine

Black Mass What’s it about:

This is the biopic of Boston gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger, the brother of a state senator, who became an FBI informant and used this status, as well as that of being the area’s most infamous criminal, to eliminate his competition – a mafia family trying to invade his turf – from the 1970s to early 90s. Director: Scott Cooper cast: Johnny Depp, Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard Why it’s worth watching? “It’s not what you do, it’s when and where you do it. And who you do it to or with,” says Whitey Bulger to his six-year-old son in the Black Mass trailer. “If nobody sees it… it didn’t happen.” But we all know that much of what we’ll see in this film did actually happen. Boston’s Whitey Bulger, played by Johnny Depp, was, at one time (hell, probably still to this day), the most feared, most wanted, and most notorious gangster in U.S. history. And the film’s trailer certainly confirms this. Johnny Depp is ruthless and cunning, and his portrayal of Bulger is all about intimidation, domination and brutal violence – it’s simply terrifying and we love it. Critics are already saying that this is the best performance from Johnny Depp that we’ve seen in a very long time, as he captures Bulger’s split personality – charming and loved by his neighbours, and deeply feared and merciless towards his opponents – incredibly well. If it’s straight up, intense, cold-blooded drama that you’re after, Black Mass will deliver this, and then some! We hear award season calling out for this one!

THRILLER

After the Storm: A Kate Burkholder Novel By Linda Castillo

ALTERNATIVE R&B/SOUL

Beauty Behind the Madness By The Weeknd

Now, how do we describe a predominantly R&B artist who is breaking all the musical barriers with his addictive beats and throwback sound? One word: The Weeknd. Though we don’t know much about Abel Tesfaye himself (he does have a social media presence, but much of this man’s personal life is shrouded in mystery), what we do know is that since he dropped the nine-track mixtape, House of Balloons, back in 2009, he has been unstoppable. His sound is radio-ready and there are clear traces of contemporary R&B à la Trey Songz, Jeremih, and Drake (who happens to be a huge supporter and fellow Torontonian of Abel), but there is something about the production and song craft that gives The Weeknd a little more of an edge and appeal to listeners. Beauty Behind the Madness is a gorgeous collection of electrifying melodies, featuring the Michael Jackson-style, disco-funk-sounding Can’t Feel My Face, the booming and hypnotic The Hills, and the psychedelic serenading Often (we had this one on repeat for a long time). Fans who have been with Abel since the start will appreciate how much he’s grown and his fan base is sure to sky rocket.

Kate finds herself plunged into a thirty year old case that takes her deep into the Amish community to which she once belonged. Secrets are revealed, her personal life gets complicated, her focus is distracted. Highly recommended for mainstream mystery lovers, however, not for the faint-hearted as this book goes in-depth with some explicit violent scenes.

Theorems consists of 12 very strong and personal compositions created during an exceptionally intense period for him. It bounces between rock and pop, accessible and innovative yet open and defiant. While Theorems marks his second solo release, Halatchev’s team spirit has closely tied him together with Florida based poet Joel Jenkins who wrote lyrics for some of the songs. The merging of the cultural and expressive styles has brought forward a work that

CITY RIDES

A day out with Dodge’s fleet of muscle cars is always going to be a good experience… So there we were, on a steamy afternoon at the Yas Marina Circuit, with Dodge’s entire range of American muscle lined up waiting, from the V6 Challenger right up to the mighty 700hp Charger Hellcat and SRT Viper V10. Saving the best for last, we were first let loose on the standard passenger range of SXT and R/T models. The car I went for first was the Charger SXT, with the 3.6l Pentastar V6. I recall having a go in the very first of the modern day Charger LX platforms with its 250hp 3.5l V6 way back in 2007, and being distinctly unimpressed. It felt unwieldy, overweight and sluggish, and completely uninspiring. 56

I’m very happy to say that the latest V6 Charger is in an entirely different world. The 3.6l Pentastar puts out 292hp and 350Nm of torque, but the improvement is far greater than the 42hp difference suggests, thanks to how the power is put out through the TorqueFlite eight-speed auto, as well as a vastly improved chassis that makes

the new Charger feel more taught and agile. Despite being a V6, the SXT still feels beefy and enjoyable to drive, making it worthy of the Dodge muscle brand. Inside things are also vastly improved – even this low-spec SXT is well appointed, with keyless entry and start, a stylish interior, and a sporty looking dash layout with a seven-inch reconfigurable digital cluster display. Now it was time to move on to the goodies, namely the R/T Charger and Challenger. Both feature Dodge’s meaty 5.7l HEMI, though in the sportier Challenger coupe the powerplant puts out slightly more horses, namely 375hp to the Charger’s

370, and 555Nm of torque to the Charger’s 536. The difference isn’t noticeable when you put your foot down in both cars, although the shorter and lighter Challenger definitely feels more athletic than the sedan. However, both of them are true muscle cars, with big power, and huge fun. As for the Charger SRT, it definitely looks the part, with a big airscoop on the bonnet to help cool that 485hp 6.4l HEMI V8, and the Dodge ‘crosshair’ grille has been done away with in favour of a more sporty looking mesh grille. And then there are those lovely SRT alloys. The driving experience is similar to the R/T, though you do feel the big increase in power from the 392 HEMI, and there’s a much meatier note to the engine. ➻ fact magazine

The interior is also more snazzy, with very nice leather and Alcantara combination sports seats, and more features like Launch Control and the various SRT driving modes in the dash.As the day wore on time quickly began to run out, and as a result we were all given an agonizing choice - we had to choose between a drive in the Charger Hellcat, or a drive in the SRT Viper. In the end, the V10 supercar won out! Track time in the Viper was unfortunately limited to a few laps, and therefore recollection is scant. I recall a very stylish but snug leather cockpit, and that monstrous V10 rumbling and roaring as I wrestled it around the corners, though I also recall finding it a lot less scary than anticipated, with the 640hp and 813Nm of torque being contained and laid down on the track very well by a superb chassis and the Dynamic Traction control. It was a far cry from its ancestor, the original Dodge Viper, or widowmaker as it was 58

The GoPro HERO4 Session The latest version of the quintessential action capture camera is the smallest and lightest ever offered by GoPro to date.

Offering many of the same features as the bestselling HERO4 Black and Silver cameras, the Session is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than its predecessors, making it even more portable and convenient to use when taking part in your sports activity of choice. The HERO4 Session captures GoPro-quality 1080p60, 720p100 and 1440p30 video along with eight megapixel photos in Single, Burst and Time Lapse modes, in addition to SuperView, Protune and Auto Low Light recording modes. The difference with the HERO4 Session is the very minimal one-button design that both simplifies operation and reduces size. A short press of the shutter button quickly powers the camera on and video recording begins automatically. A long press of the shutter button powers the camera on and triggers Time Lapse photo capture. Then, when you’re done with your session, press the shutter button again to save video or photo content and power the camera off. An expanded set of controls and 60

settings can be accessed when using the GoPro App or Smart Remote. The HERO4 Session is built to GoPro’s famous rugged standards and is waterproof to 33ft (10m) without the need for a separate waterproof housing. It features a sleek frame mounting system that is compatible with GoPro’s expansive array of mounts. What’s more, an innovative dual microphone system dynamically switches sound recording between microphones to reduce wind noise during activities, and audio performance during water-based activities has been dramatically improved thanks to a waterproof design that eliminates the need for a separate water housing, which can often muffle sounds. ✤ VERDICT: Smaller, tougher, and simpler to use. Just superb!

App-licious Today’s tech-savvy generation of smartphones and tablets means the world is at your fingertips, literally! FACT has three great apps to download for your device, keeping you plugged-in to all the best techie help for every area of life...

Beats 1 Radio The new worldwide radio streaming app from Apple Music has now been launched. Part of the Apple Music service, you’ll have to have an account to play it, which will cost you $4.99 a month (single membership). The disadvantage right now is that the Beats 1 app is only available to iOS, OSX and Windows users, and won’t be available on Android until later in the year. The good news is that they’ve brought in some heavy talent to run the show, namely Zane Lowe of former BBC Radio 1 fame, Julie Adenuga and urban DJ Ebro. The bad news is that the station is already getting complaints of being repetitive, and overly heavy on urban music above all else. We’re going to keep an eye on this one, but we’re not excited yet.

Periscope The new video streaming app from Twitter is rapidly gaining in popularity since it was launched in a direct challenge to Meerkat in March of this year. It’s extremely simple to use. You just hit the camera icon, and you start streaming. People can follow you, and see if you’re live. You can see which of your followed accounts is live and tune in, and you can share what you’re watching on Twitter as well. And it now saves the video online for you as well, although in very basic form at the moment. For example, you can’t skip forward or backward in the video, you just have to watch it through. Overall though, a really cool app!

Music Maker Jam Available for Windows, iOS and Android, it does exactly what it says on the tin – you can make your own music with this very easy to use app that has quite a lot of creative power. It is free to download, and with it comes three musical ‘styles’, which are kind of like templates for genres of music. If you want additional styles, you’ll have to pay for them as DLC, which is where these guys will be making their money! You can mix and arrange loops, and there are thousands of samples to choose from. The latest edition also records sound, so you can do your own vocals and add them. Professional musicians and producers might not be impressed, but dedicated amateurs will love it. fact magazine

Record Breaking P e r f o r ma n c e f o r I n f i n i t i Infiniti in the Middle East has continued to build on its Q1 success, registering an impressive first half performance for 2015. As one of the fastest growing premium automotive brands in the region, Infiniti delivered 4,200 vehicles to customers at a growth rate of 24.6% - which is four times the pace of the premium automotive market. “Our numbers are testament to the premium motoring experience that our vehicles continue to deliver to customers across the Middle East,” said Juergen Schmitz, Managing Director, Infiniti Middle East. Numbers for the month of June were of particular note as Infiniti delivered 825 vehicles to customers at a comparative growth rate to the previous year of 63% - making it the best June in the history of Infiniti in the Middle East.

J a g u a r F - Pa c e T e s t e d in Dubai Jaguar’s all-new performance crossover – the first SUV in the marque’s history – recently completed extensive testing in some of the most inhospitable environments on earth, which included a stint in the searing summer heat of the Dubai desert. In Dubai, ambient temperatures can exceed 50°C in the shade. When vehicles are left out in direct sunlight, cabin temperatures can soar to 70°C – exactly what’s needed to ensure that everything from climate control systems to infotainment touchscreens function perfectly in extremes of heat and humidity. This part of the test cycle is also designed to place the cooling systems under very high load through a combination of high ambient temperatures and low airflow. To the other extreme, the F-Pace was also tested in Arjaplog, Northern Sweden, where winter temperatures can drop to -40°C! fact magazine

Boho Beauty

Code Red

Geek Chic

We love a good 70s comeback and you’ll be pleased to know that the bohemian vibe is very much alive for the AW15 fashion season. There’s a folksy touch with patchwork, print and texture overload on scarves, shawls, ponchos, and all sorts of amazing knits. Whether you’re into comfy and casual or hipster quirky, the boho look can be achieved with everything from a flowing prairie dress, to cool corduroy dungarees, and chic suede outerwear or shoes.

Call it crimson, cherry, ruby, rosy or scarlet, there’s no doubt that the one-colour trend this season is dominated by bold and bright shades of red. At FW15 fashion weeks we saw head-to-toe ensembles in the form of trouser suits, skirt and top pieces, long dresses and even killer-hot red boots. Red is perfect for cutting a confident figure for the Autumn season, and we love that you can spice up the look with black accessories, chunky jewellery and trendy hairstyles.

From glamorous bookworms to ladies who lunch, this is a look that will let every woman express her style. There’s a little of Margot Tenenbaum, a little of the varsity girl, the afternoon tea type and the office crush – with this trend, the kookier you get, the better. Tweed skirt suits, pleated cinched waist dresses, timeless coats, demure polo necks, and elegant handbags, as well as detailed elbow patches and outfits rocking team colours, all classify you for the geek chic trend.

Gothic Romance

Print Play

Victorian noir saw a mournful moody calling for a number of fashion collection themes for AW15. The use of frills, lace, ruffle necklines, and deep berry lips helped numerous designers to showcase stunning, costume-worthy silhouettes. It’s all about vamped-up glamorous drama when it comes to nailing this trend. Sheer fabrics and intricate embellishments are perfect for getting that dark and decadent 19th century vibe. Add a beehive-style up do, or slicked-back hair to bring out your inner goth goddess.

This is by far a fashion favourite when it comes to seasonal style. Now, the checked trend has been given an AW15 update. At fashion week we saw fluffy knits with distorted and stretched checked ponchos, the idea here was BIG checks in contrasting colours. Then there’s the quilted 3D forms which do their best to jump off the clothes and add dimension to your everyday look. Find yourself a sweet and sour colour combo with chunky sweaters, pretty skirts and cool coats.

Hands down, one of the most vivid trends of the AW15 fashion season; this trend is splashed with graphic-art inspired swirls, shapes, monochromatic checkerboard patterns, and optical illusions that will have you in a style daze. If you really want to rock out these bold prints, go top-to-toe with an ankle-length dress, a midi coat or a skirt-suit piece. Zig-zags, cubes, geometry and even retro colour blocking, will bring your Op-Pop style to life. fact magazine

Blackout

Head to Toe

Stripe Story

A colour that never really leaves the runway, and needs no introduction, black is making big fashion waves for the season ahead. The lack of colour in many designer collections for AW15 will bring delight to many fashion folk who love their wardrobe to be more on the dark side. Serious, moody, businesslike, with a whole host of fabrics, like wool, leather, mohair, shearling and more, taking a dark direction has never been so fun. There were monochromatic clothes, like black tie blazers and oversized coats being paired with crisp white shirt.

The statement here is that if you’re going to go with a print – go all the way! From funky florals to Aztec patterns and even pop culture-influenced pieces, the full look isn’t one to shy away from this AW15 season. This style works best as a suit, with sharp tailored lines adding to the drama of a topto-bottom print. In some cases, accessories emblazoned with the same print also add a little zest to the look. With this one it’s go big or go home!

A perennial style that held its own on the AW15 fashion runways – the stripe was blown up, coloured in different hues, made to stand out in metallic, or on cosy knitwear, making any clothing items streaked with this style a bonafide fashion staple for the upcoming season. Coats, jackets, sweaters, chunky jumpers, pinstripe suits, however you want to get your stripe on, there are plenty of ways you can do it.

Static Sound

Animal Instinct

Colour Pop

Think broken television and white noise – this was one texture trend on the AW15 runways that men everywhere should be rocking out in. Style wise, go for grey pieces or bright colours and layers. Cool jackets, casual suits and all sorts of knitwear will have this grainy texture on point for an eye-jarring yet playful everyday look. Personally, we love the static pattern in bold clasing colours, worn as outerwear.

Leopard, zebra, cheetah, whatever your print of preference, bring out the beast in your wardrobe with your choice of AW15 fashion. Statement overcoats are a strong look, along with a nappy boulce, a fuzzy mohair, or oversized blazer – anything splashed with animal print will add a taste of street to a tailored silhouette, leaving you looking fashion forward in fall.

Bright shades are not completely off limits, but it’s all about how you incorporate them that matters. Put on a red ombre jacket with a black ensemble, or go 1950s western with dashes of yellow and orange. Accessories are one way to play up the colour pop style, but, also, embellishments, neutral and warm shades, and understated patterns can help to break up the different hues to make sure your look isn’t too overpowering.

The St. Regis Doha welcomed a new Executive Chef, Jean-Luc Morcellet to its culinary team, recently, and we were excited to meet the new man in charge of all the amazing dishes served at the hotel’s excellent fine-dining venues. He’s only been in Doha for around six weeks now, after living in Dubai for 10 years, and already Chef Jean-Luc knows exactly what he wants to implement at The St. Regis Doha. “I think the most important thing, for me, is to find a system – to have everything at a certain standard and maintain that,” he says. “And after, find a way to get better, evaluate and improve.” 84

Today, Chef Jean-Luc was going to do something very special for us and cook up some of his favourite dishes. First up was Goat Cheese Millefiori, delicious layers of Goat cheese between pastry and a refreshing side salad – this was a textured treat for the taste buds. We ask Chef Jean-Luc to tell us a little bit about his culinary journey. “I’m from a farm, I come from the countryside in France where we would own cows, and other animals, but our main business was wine,” he tells us. “Because I’m from the countryside, restaurants and going out to eat was very rare, done once a year maybe.

People wouldn’t go out much. We used to have parties at home and make it very warm with family. “But I think what pushed me to really become a chef was to travel, to go, leave France, and see the world and meet people,” he adds. Next out on the table was a beautiful Beef Brisket. Tender morsels of meaty goodness were plated with an assortment of delicious vegetables. We loved how filling yet simple the dish was, and as everyone at the table was a meat lover, this main went down brilliantly. Chef Jean-Luc has a broad knowledge

of food and professional cooking, so we’re surprised to learn that he hasn’t always worked in hotels. “I used to be part of several restaurants, here and there throughout my career, but it was in London that I decided to make that transition from restaurants to hotels,” he recalls. “I knew that hotels would expand my knowledge, and would give me the opportunity to travel – the independent restaurant business is limited as to what I wanted from my career,” he says. Talking of London, this is one of Chef Jean-Luc’s favourite places, and the destination where he first moved to from France, when he was just 19. “Travel – that has always been my number one goal,” he says. “I love London. It’s a city that I always go back to. I’ve worked in Africa, the Middle East and other parts of the world, but I just love the ambience there. “I think being in London opened my eyes to different things; different cultures and it pushed me to learn,” Chef Jean-Luc

admits. “I arrived there 26 years ago when everything was moving at a fast pace, and getting supplies was a challenge. I think that evolution was my favourite thing about it,” he adds. We’re curious to know how much Chef Jean-Luc has had to adapt his culinary style to meet Middle-Eastern demands. “I love everything,” he says. “I love food. As long as the product smells as it should be, I’m content. I knew that Dubai was a very fast-paced industry; everything is growing at such a fast rate and I knew what I was getting myself into. “I follow culinary trends; it’s part of my job to be on top of what’s going on. Everything is a fast moving trend. At the end of the day, it’s all about the buzz. Everyone wants to be on top and work his or her way up, as quickly as possible. The competition is big,” he admits. To finish off our exclusive tasting, we indulge in Caramel Fiore with Pistachio Ice Cream. First off, just like the other dishes,

the presentation is spectacular. Bright with colour popping off the plate, aesthetically, Chef Jean-Luc’s dishes tick all the right boxes. When we take a bite, it’s very clear that taste also exceeds expectations. The dessert is delectably sweet with each component complementing the other, very well. When it comes to choosing between sweet and savoury, Chef JeanLuc prefers a mix of the two, and recalls that as a young boy, he would tuck into popcorn smothered with hot chocolate, just to savour that perfect balance of sweet and salty! With over 25 years of experience in the culinary world, we’re convinced that Chef Jean-Luc’s expertise and guidance will be a positive addition to The St. Regis Doha’s foodie offerings. We’ll be back for more very soon! ✤ GO: Call The St. Regis Doha on 4446 0000 for reservations and more information about all dining outlets. fact magazine

“If your nights are, let’s say, a bit dull, and rhythm and fiesta is exactly what you need, Habanos’ resident band Leyenda Cubana will put your hips to the ultimate dancing test.”

A

true aficionado of cigar knows what a fine cigar is, and when they get the opportunity to have the ultimate cigar experience; they tend to savour it till the very last puff. Habanos at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha has just what a cigar fan would long for, and anyone who’s not their for the smoking can indulge in a glass of fine vintage vino or signature cocktails. The FACT team was up for an evening out to discover what more this elegant venue has to offer. The intimate and classic lounge is located at the hotel’s lobby. The warm ambience of Habanos along with the rich mahogany furnishing, and low oversized sofas brings out the everlasting quality of the venue, which offers premium cigars and a superb menu. If your nights are, let’s say, a bit dull, and rhythm and fiesta is exactly what you need, Habanos’ resident band Leyenda Cubana will put your hips to the ultimate dancing test. We became curious as to who these brilliant musicians were and we got them to spill some beans on what it takes to be a resident band at the stellar hotel: “ We’ve been with the hotel for about four years now and it’s been going pretty well,” they tell us. Alejandro, Barbara and Daymara make up the dynamite trio that will get you grooving. Alejandro recommends the FACT team and readers to attend their sensational Cuban nights, every Thursday from 7.30pm until 1am. “The night gets filled with Cubans, Latinos, and many other nationalities, that come together to create a great atmosphere,” he adds.

VENUE REVIEW

At this point, we were excited to see what this night has in store for us. Mark your calendars because this one is a must, and our team will be attending again, for sure. Now, to kick-start a delightful foodie journey, we try some Southern BBQ Chicken Croquettes with carrot shavings and blue cheese dip – simply scrumptious. For those whose appetite screams for fish, try the Ceviche, a hammour with tortilla chips, avocado and cilantro – the perfect appetiser for sharing. We couldn’t resist

trying the Habanos’ Mini Chipotle Short Ribs Sliders with cabbage slaw and BBQ sauce – it was so yummy and we highly recommend that true meat lovers out there should order this! With music in the background, and a superb atmosphere, we dig in for our last and mouthwatering dish, Chicken Quesadilla with guacamole (of course!) We have to say, this was a winner. Not only could we appreciate the richness of the chicken being perfectly cooked, but also, its

three crucial accompaniments cream cheese, avocado and chimichurri, complemented the quesadilla extremely well. After a wonderful night of indulging in great dishes, good music and excellent service, we were ready to hit the road. FACT is surely coming back for the Thursday night fiesta and we hope you’ll also jump on the Cuban/Latino bandwagon of fun, only at Habanos. ✤ GO: Habanos opens daily from 5pm until 1am. A night at el faro September came with a tantalising treat for our big appetites. This month’s Cucina de Badir led us to the beautiful Marsa Malaz Kempinski for an experience of Spanish flavours at El Faro‌

Cucina de badir

Known for its grandeur and amazing dining outlets, Marsa Malaz Kempinski was waiting for our resident amateur chef as he made his way to the Spanish eatery El Faro, to discover new and exciting recipes. Over to you Badir…

E

l Faro is a stunning Spanish restaurant located at Marsa Malaz Kempinski The Pearl Doha. I’m greeted by warm and welcoming staff and a true Spanish chef, Raúl Cob Ferrer. With such palatial surroundings and a cool venue, I was ready to set new standards for Cucina de Badir. We started off with the famous, and incredibly delicious, Spanish Paella. Chef Raúl has a great energy about him; his character is truly friendly, and his passion and dedication to showcase food from his own culture and heritage, is beyond genuine and impressive. We head to the kitchen ready to cook up some paella. This is one of the most famous and exquisite dishes in Spanish gastronomy. Seafood paella, especially, is characteristic of the culture. By adding shellfish and seafood with fish stock, we begin. We heat up the paella pan, adding olive oil, followed by the various seafood like fish cubes and whole prawns, and let the ingredients 92

fry for around seven minutes. The prawns and mussels are set aside to use for presentation topping at the end. By this time, I can smell the mouthwatering aromas in the air. We then add tomato paste, chopped garlic and saffron to the paella dish with the seafood contents in it – and we let it all cook together. Next, we add rice to the sofrito (a popular sauce used as a base in Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American cooking) and let everything cook for a few minutes, mixing all the ingredients together. We proceed by covering our mix with our fish stock for a few minutes

Chef Raúl has a g r e at e n e r g y a b o u t him; his character i s t r u ly f r i e n d ly, a n d h i s pa s s i o n a n d d e d i c at i o n t o showcase food from h i s o w n c u lt u r e a n d h e r i ta g e , i s b e yo n d g e n u i n e a n d impressive.

Cucina de badir

as Chef Raúl gives me some cooking advice. He says that for paella it’s important to add twice the amount of stock in ratio to the rice. This, he says, will help the rice cook to perfection. The dish is left to cook on medium heat until the broth has completely evaporated. To finish off, we add our already cooked mussels and prawns, along with a strip of red pepper and a slice of lemon, as visual garnish. Just wow! It looks irresistible, and tastes just as delicious as you can imagine. Before sitting down to devour the paella, we had one more dish to cook – another Spanish favourite – patatas

bravas. This dish is a foodie dream on a plate. We started by chopping our potatoes into cubes then fried them in a pan on low temperature, for around 10 minutes. Then for a quick two to three minutes, the heat is turned up a little to make the potato nice and crispy. After, put the potato cubes in a bowl and mix with a little olive oil, and garnish with salt and Spanish paprika (called pimento). Serve on a plate with the magic ingredient – garlic mayo – that is homemade at El Faro. Patatas Bravas usually tastes amazing with a sauce that is a little spicy and tangy. We ended this lovely Spanish cooking experience by tucking into two culinary delights – both bringing real Spanish taste to Doha’s shores. The service at El Faro is great, the chef is a fantastic guy, and the food is to-die-for – what more could you ask for? Nos vemos en la próxima Cucina de Badir. ✤ GO: Visit El Faro at Marsa Malaz Kempinski The Pearl Doha.
