Modesty as Remedy

T

Endless effort, endless humility, endless modesty.” - Rain

his issue has been a long time coming. The conversation surrounding the rise of modest living has been at the forefront of society, in the Gulf and beyond, for the past few years. Now, in 2018, we can firmly say that aspects like modest fashion and modern representations of Muslim women in the mainstream media are slowly starting to change for the better – and proving to be more than just a “trend” thanks to social media and other content-sharing tools. In a September special, we take a look at the rise of the modest lifestyle and how everything from the birth of bloggers and influencers to the hiring of more hijab-wearing models has contributed to the growth of all things modest. Turn to p29 and let our thought-provoking feature take you on the journey of modest to mainstream. When you’ve finished reading about how modest living has taken over the world, turn over and check out some of the most incredible women who have helped to propel it forward in our 16 Style Setters to follow on the gram (p37). Right here in Doha, we met up with a young expat who is all about the modest fashion life and celebrating this on her insta profile. Meet Dila Covered for an insight into her colourful attire and aesthetically stunning embrace of faith and style (p42). Of course, a special issue deserves a beautiful cover – and we found just the right lady to give us one. Digital Artist Hala AlAbbasi talks to us on p49 and shares her work, creative skills and modest lifestyle choices. Our luxury staycation spotlight showcases one of our favourite 5-star hotspots, the Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas (p57), whilst our globetrotter takes flight all the way to the African shores of Zanzibar (p62) – there’s plenty of wanderlust inspo, home and away! It’s all about quality in our dining pages as we visit Ocean Basket at the Mall of Qatar in our Culinary Spotlight (p83); Fuego at Shangri-La Hotel Doha makes our On the Menu (p87); and the Foodie Corner takes a pit-stop for Friday Brunch at the Mövenpick Hotel West Bay Doha (p91) – all of this and plenty more news on restaurant openings and September eating-out deals will keep your bellies full throughout the month! Welcome back to the sandpit and the humidity – whatever you say, there’s no place like the Gulf – and we’re going to spend September enjoying (trying to) make the most of all that Doha life and culture has to offer. ☺

STUDIO 209 NY Under the patronage of its Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums (QM) announced the opening of Studio 209 NY, a new partnership for an international art residency which will commence in 2019. THANKS TO A NEW CREATIVE venture, Qatari artists will have the opportunity to apply for a residency at the prestigious International Studio & Curatorial Programme (ISCP) in New York, USA. The ISCP is a laboratory for the world’s most promising artists and curators. It supports the creative advancement of its participants and promotes cultural exchange through residencies, exhibitions and public programmes. Housed in East Williamsburg, with 35 work studios and two gallery spaces, the ISCP is New York’s most comprehensive international visual arts residency programme, and the fourth largest worldwide. With over 1,350 alumni from more than 80 countries, it hosts more than 100 residents each year. Participating Qatari artists will have access to a diverse global network of colleagues which will enable them to forge life-long connections, engage in inspiring conversations with their peers, and nurture their artistic skills. Programme benefits include, among others: a private, furnished studio space; monthly access to cultural institutions in and outside New York; monthly private studio visits with professionals from other museums, galleries and alternative spaces; the opportunity to meet with one of the two visiting critics to ISCP each month; as well as the opportunity to realize public projects in several offsite venues in New York. Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director at the Fire Station, said: “After the success of the Paris Residency Programme, we are pleased to announce a new international partnership which will allow Qatari artists to find new inspirations, challenge themselves and refine their skills. “The ISCP is also the fourth largest residency in the world, which will give our emerging artists an international platform to tell their stories and showcase their work,” he continued. “We look forward to starting a new chapter in Qatar Museums’ ambitious journey of creating a strong and sustainable cultural infrastructure for Qatar through investing in our country’s creative talents.” 10

fact magazine

ISCP residents are generally 5-10 years into their professional practice and would be described as emerging to mid-career. The programme hosts artists working with a wide range of media including, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, installation, illustration, drawing, video, socially-engaged art and research-based work. Much like its Paris counterpart, the ISCP includes an Open Studio programme. The two-day event will provide the opportunity for all ISCP residents to present their work to the public, giving them an unmatched opportunity to showcase the results of their residency in one of the world’s most iconic cities. The Fire Station will sponsor one Qatari artist for three months, as well as provide them with a monthly stipend for their stay and art materials. Studio 209 NY is the latest addition to QM’s comprehensive portfolio of programmes which aim to nurture a new generation of creators and help Qatar originate sources for art and creativity from within. ✤

ICONIC WIN FOR MONDRIAN DOHA Mondrian Doha, the hotel managed by the global lifestyle hospitality company sbe, announced the prestigious win for Our Time is Now brand feature film at the 2018 Berlin Fashion Film Awards. SCOOPING UP THE COVETED PRIZE for Best Film from the Middle East and Africa region, the winning title beat a prestigious calibre of international films from brands such as Prada, Tom Ford and Gucci. Mikel Ibrahim, Director of Sales and Marketing at Mondrian Doha, said: “We are elated at the news of Our Time is Now winning Best Film at the Berlin Fashion Film Awards. This is not only a win for us as a hotel, but for Doha as a creative hub for innovation, art and design. We are proud of our creative film partners, The Film House, who worked tirelessly to capture the spirit of sbe, Marcel Wanders’ design and the essence of Mondrian Doha in this film.” The video, which captures the epitome of sbe’s dna of creating extraordinary experiences throughout its proprietary brands with a commitment to authenticity, sophistication, mastery and innovation, pays homage to this lifestyle brand by capturing Mondrian Doha which has become synonymous throughout the world for its embodiment of high fashion, design, architecture and art. “Mondrian Doha is about setting new trends, raising the bar in design, service as well as experiences, and we believe we were able to deliver this to Qatar with this film, truly encapsulating the inspirational vision of this unique property,” Mikel added. The Our Time is Now film is a tribute to the design of internationally acclaimed Dutch designer Marcel Wanders’ masterpiece, Mondrian Doha, inspired by the iconic Middle Eastern folk tale, One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, from the beauty of local patterns, ornate Arabic writing and historic souks. This visual masterpiece was the backdrop to the conceptualization of Our Time is Now film, capturing the essence of what sbe represents. Explaining the concept behind this dream sequence video, Justin Kramer, Chief Operating Officer at The Film House, said: “The film was born from the inspiration of the interior of the 12

hotel, influenced by each space which are beyond anyone’s expectations. The film compositions were drawn to compliment and or juxtapose the space. “The hotel has 1001 Arabian Nights influences, Alice in Wonderland, and surrealist elements that really helped The Film House go to places that weren’t ever explored before. We wanted this film to blow people away. Leave them asking ‘How?’ and ‘Was that for real?’ and, of course, ‘When does this place open?’,” he explained. The Berlin Fashion Film Awards (BFFF) was founded in 2012, to highlight the most creative work produced for fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands. Since its first edition BFFF showcases the best films for multinational brands side by side the most exciting content produced by upcoming directors. Entrants to this year’s competition included Salvatore Ferragamo, Tom Ford and Burberry to name but a few. ✤

AN AUTUMN OF ARTS A wide ranging programme of exhibitions and displays will be held this autumn at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. REVOLUTION GENERATIONS A ground-breaking exhibition curated by Abdellah Karroum, Director of Mathaf, will present artists from the Arab World, Turkey, Iran and diaspora, looking at important moments of change in the history of modern and contemporary art; specifically the 1950s - 1960s Post-Independence(s) era; a period between 1970s - 1990s, and the 2000s Pre-revolutions decades, when underground artistic movements developed in the region in response to the absence of freedom of expression. Offering a historical narrative, Revolution Generations introduces artists as vital actors of social and cultural change in each of these periods of modern and contemporary history. The exhibition is staged in three parts. Chapter one looks at the fight for independence in North Africa, the Middle East countries and beyond in the 1950s, the beginning of new languages in art and literature. Chapter two presents works by artists who are part of the Pan-Arab cultural movement in the 1970s. Chapter three looks at the generation of artists who prefigured the Arab Spring in the 2000s inventing new vocabularies that look at societies undergoing change.

I STRONGLY BELIEVE IN OUR RIGHT TO BE FRIVOLOUS Curated by Hendrik Folkerts (Dittmer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Art Institute of Chicago) and Laura Barlow (Curator, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha), in this series of work, Mounira Al Solh (born 1978, Beirut) collects personal histories and experiences that emerge from the humanitarian and political crises in Syria and the Middle East. The more than 150 drawings and embroideries presented at Mathaf document deeply personal encounters and conversations between Al Solh and Syrian refugees as well as other people from the Middle East 16

fact magazine

who were forcibly displaced to Lebanon, Europe, and the United States, chronicling individual accounts of departure, arrival, and grave uncertainty. Just as these works emerge from spaces of conversation and exile around the world, this exhibition, now presented in Doha, becomes a stage for conversation—inspiring us to reflect on and discuss how migration and displacement, conflict and resistance, continue to shape our world today.

FATEH AL-MOUDARRES: COLOUR, EXTENSITY AND SENSE Guest curated by Sara Raza (Independent Curator), this exhibition presents a posthumous view into the oeuvre of this modernist artist’s studio practice. Deliberately organized as a thematic slice, as opposed to a retrospective, this exhibition provides a revisionist lens, which examines al-Moudaress’s works within the context of his engagements with Surrealism and Sufism.

JASSIM ZAINI: REPRESENTATION AND ABSTRACTION Curated by Fatma Mostafawi (Curator, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha), the exhibition will present a focused view of the works of a pioneering Qatari modernist. The exhibition explores Zaini’s artistic vision and examines two formal artistic directions adopted by the artist during different and overlapping periods of his artistic career. The works on show are important reflections of a fundamental era in the history of Qatar as they capture the social, cultural and economic transformations brought about by the exploitation of oil and the formation of nation state. ✤

WE HAVE YET TO MEET someone who doesn’t love the fiery taste of Nando’s chicken! With its fresh salads, mouthwatering mains, flavour-packed pittas, and so much more, getting the right texture and grill time for each piece of chicken is a vital part of the cooking process at Nando’s. And so, it gives us great pleasure to see that the technique of staff at Nando’s is rewarded through a fun worldwide competition. Every year the best grillers from 23 countries compete to show off their skills and are judged on the characteristics that make Nando’s PERi-PERi Chicken unique. Points are awarded for the perfect flame grill marks, consistent skin colouring, cutting technique as well as tenderness, juiciness, and temperature. Fork skills and brand fitness are just some of the factors amongst a few more, that matter when it comes to winning the battle. Qatar 2018 started with 29 Grillers, out of which nine successful contenders grilled their way through the finals at Doha Rugby Club. Showing off the top-notch, tastiest flame-grilled skills to cook the perfect Chicken, 31-year-old Sean Kent from the Philippines, who 24

He will now travel to Australia and compete in the Master Grillers Challenge in October, representing Qatar on the world stage to compete with finalists from other Nando’s markets from across the globe. M IS FOR MODESTY Like any other device, modesty has become a tool for many women all over the world. It shows character and confidence where the heart and mind rule the body. In a time where traditional and modern meet in the middle, more and more women are accomplishing extraordinary things without compromising their style or their faith. FACT’s Shabana Adam explores the rise of the modest lifestyle in the Gulf and beyond, and why it has taken so long for a generations-aged concept to finally break into the mainstream‌

W

hat do Nura Afia, Amena Khan, and Ibtihaj Muhammad have in common? Clue: it’s not just their very evident Muslim names. These three women did what some would have believed unimaginable even a decade ago. They broke into the mainstream to become the first hijab-wearing representatives in industries that are traditionally targeted towards western aesthetics and features. Nura wowed makeup experts and became an official ambassador for CoverGirl in 2017, while Amena was cast in a major haircare campaign for L’Oréal Paris Elvive – though short-lived – earlier this year, and Ibtihaj is not only a bad-ass sabre fencer, she’s the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the United States in the 2016 Olympics. All women, all Muslim, all wearing the hijab. And all of these achievements were made just over the past couple of years. My question is, what took so long for the world to stand up and notice these strong, capable, beautiful women and the thousands more who embrace their passions and talents without compromising their creative wardrobes and their faith? The answer could very well lie in the rapid rise of the modest lifestyle. In order to appreciate the impact and growth of modesty into the mainstream, we need to understand who it effects, benefits, and whether we’re witnessing an evolution or a revolution. So, what is modest fashion? Interpretations can differ depending on who you ask, but a widely accepted definition would be: a sense of personal style while remaining relatively covered. That means, high collars, long sleeves and hemlines, or looser clothing, for example – formerly “uncool” wardrobe attire that has gone from drab to fab. Generally speaking, modest fashion is a personal choice which simply means wearing more conventional clothing inspired by everything from your cultural norms to the latest runway collections. “When I hear the words modest fashion, I think of my hijab and to me it means dressing while adhering to my faith,” says Yasmine, a British-Lebanese modest lifestyle blogger who goes by the instagram name @undercoverstyling. “I think it has taken time for modest fashion to break into the mainstream because there are examples that are set from fashion hubs like New York, Paris and London where modesty was not considered when designing,” Yasmine explains. “Now with the rise of social media as well as the rise of modest bloggers and celebrities, modest fashion is making headlines.” She’s right. In fact, it is estimated that the international Muslim clothing market is forecast to be worth $373 billion by 2022, according to the latest Global Islamic Economy report, produced by Reuters. We’re also seeing the likes of London and Dubai; two of the most stylish cities in the world, now host an annual Modest Fashion Week. Nike has launched the Pro Hijab for modest sportswear, whilst Japanese fashion chain Uniqlo introduced its Uniqlo x Hana Tajima Collection with a line of hijabs, and H&M has featured a Muslim model, Mariah Idrissi, wearing a headdress in one of their major campaigns. Plus, we all remember the time a 15-year-old Saudi teenager demanded a hijab-clad emoji – of course, WhatsApp made it happen. It is rare for a multi-billion dollar industry to fly under the radar for so long, as the modest fashion sector has. But, it sleeps no more.

For Yasmine, who loves combining fabrics, colours, prints and textures to make a bold statement, sharing the beauty of dressing modestly was one of the many reasons she decided to start @undercoverstyling on the gram. “I wanted to encourage other young women who don’t feel represented and they can be inspired by the colours, designs, and fabrics,” she says. “The use of social media has given Muslim women a voice and exposure that they never had before. We are able to communicate around the world and show people what the life of a modern, Muslim woman is really like,” Yasmine tells us. “It is the same for many communities around the world but especially for Muslim women because of the stereotypes that have been so prevalent previously. It means we can take back some control and show people a glimpse into our world.” As the western hemisphere takes note of how modest choices are, simply, a normal part of life for millions of Muslim women, it still remains a misconception in many parts of the world, that women who wear the hijab or more traditional clothing, are oppressed. “Many people in the west still lack knowledge and understanding of the history and the privilege of wearing a hijab,” says UAE-based British-Pakistani teacher Suneela Aslam. “Despite immigrants being an integral part of western life, some communities in places like America or the UK simply don’t invest enough time in learning about our differences.” Leading us to question whether the modest lifestyle is just another passing trend – one that blings cha-ching for profitmaking more so than a movement to break cultural boundaries. “I am all about breaking the stereotypes,” Yasmine says. “I wanted to create a platform that was positive and encouraging for modest women. The hijab for me is an honor and I wanted to show Muslim women that it is not limiting,” she continues. “I have travelled the world and my hijab has been a way for me to speak and deal with people and to tear down any misconceptions.”

Let’s take a look at how western institutions have picked certain personalities to advocate for modesty. Take Halima Aden, the SomaliAmerican Miss Minnesota USA contestant, who competed wearing a hijab and a “burkini” – another first in the states. She was quickly signed to IMG Models, the agency that represents the Hadid sisters and went on to walk on the runway – wearing a hijab – for Yeezy, Max Mara and Alberta Ferretti. Is her success a fairy tale waiting to fade out or is her mainstream modest lifestyle an agent for change? It’s no secret that models like Halima Aden, Mariah Idrissi and supermodel Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid, widelyknown as Iman, were chosen for their gifted genes, but also as individuals 34

dispel some negative attitudes towards Muslim women, or any woman, who chooses to dress traditionally, there are still some damaging perspectives towards religion in some countries that have also deterred the growth of the modest lifestyle in selected markets. Restrictions like the burka ban in some parts of Europe or banned veils in some Chinese provinces means that even the most successful and far-reaching modest influencers, struggle to connect and relay their positive vibes and messages. Hold on, shouldn’t we leave it up to women to decide for themselves what they want to wear and how that crisp white Zara shirt or the patterned abaya and matching head scarf makes them feel? Tülin Meric, a Bahrain-based BritishTurkish modest fashion blogger running the platform @trestouline, says: “I would say that I’m freer than most women. Wearing modest clothing allows me to choose what I display or don’t display of my body. It allows me to express myself

through colour and design. “Dressing modestly also naturally gives off an indication on my religious stance,” Tülin explans. “I have a sense of liberation because there is an invisible barrier set between you and others – men – and that makes me feel safe and in control. I would say this is the ultimate freedom for any woman.” Choosing to live modestly in all or certain aspects of life is not a new concept. Generations of women, of many different faiths, have been covered whilst accomplishing great things and breaking that glass ceiling. Here’s hoping that this contemporary uprising and progression will not burn out anytime soon. For the moment, let us celebrate the Nura’s and Ibtihaj’s of the world, as they continue to remind people everywhere that you don’t need permission to be who you are and to go after what you want. ✤

Q&A •

Q: Hi Fazila! Let’s jump right in… what does the term “Modest Fashion” mean to you? A: Modest Fashion is the definition that Muslim women can be modest as well as fashionable, a term I struggled with growing up, yet today it has become a global fashion movement. Everyone’s interpretation of modest fashion will change, for me, the visual representation of modesty is my hijab, a taboo even in the 21st century and fashion has been my life for over a decade. Modest fashion allows me to combine both and have a self-proclaimed identity. Q: Modest Fashion has been the lifestyle for hundreds of thousands of women across the world for many years. Why do you think it’s taken so long for it to break into the mainstream? A: For many years modest fashion had been recognised only as a culture or a religious choice for women. Often linked to religious conformity and labelled as old-fashioned and oppressed, these women faced many social andcultural barriers. Digital evolution and the rise of social media has drastically changed the way we interact, think, form opinions and engage. Amid the revolution, social media has created a platform for a new generation of Muslim women to take to the stage and be heard. The rise of young Muslim influencers has projected that same way of life as a personal style or identity, and diversity is finally being celebrated. A paradox that the same oppressed, religious attire is now a source of celebration for mainstream fashion. Modest fashion seems to finally be having its moment after breaking barriers and as a Muslim woman, it feels like it’s been a long time coming. Q: What prompted you to share your modest lifestyle choices on your social media channels, and how does your audience of followers interact with your posts? A: The decision to share my modest lifestyle wasn’t a thought out one, it kind of just happened one day. Fashion was my career choice not just my lifestyle and through my posts, I found a visual form of expressing myself, it gave me a voice.

The inaccessibility of modest clothing (and my mum) were my sources of inspiration to go into fashion, I would often look at the seasonal fashion trends and make my own modest versions, just so I could be on trend. Upon graduating with a major in Fashion, I landed myself my first job interview in the fashion industry. It was a nerve-wracking experience, not because of my skills or lack of experience but because of my headscarf. Covered up and representing a fashion brand maybe did not go hand in hand and I contemplated taking my hijab off, just that once. The look of surprise when I first entered the room was one I can still remember but more so for the start of my career and one of the greatest decisions I made that day was not compromising who I was. My hijab and modest living is a symbol of growth and how far I have come. When the self-battle you faced over ten years comes full circle and you receive an Instagram message telling you how you inspired someone to dress modestly at work, is the very reason I decided to be a source of support and celebration. fact magazine

43

Given the significant change in the industry, I think it definitely is easier for a girl to make the decision to wear the hijab, or just dress more modestly, by portraying an example of how you can maintain your identity whilst promoting what you love, is something I can only hope people can relate to. Q: What do you think about the current state of modest fashion in relation to traditionally edgy or urban brands. For example, big name brands have had modest fashion specific campaigns and collections – is this a positive sign or just another drive for profit? A: Every business needs to be profitable but to remain competitive in your market you must embrace change to be relevant. Mainstream fashion brands are definitely benefitting with increased revenue and a new market of Muslim consumers, but whilst doing so are also normalising Muslim presence. Whether it is a Ramadan campaign, conservative clothing line in your local high street store or a modest personality on the latest billboard, it is a celebration! If in a time when Islam is negatively portrayed in the media, these brands are representing diversity and opening the minds of nonMuslim consumers, then this is surely a positive sign. Q: Tell us about your background and when you first decided that you wanted to become a source of support and celebration for women and especially for modest living? A: Growing up, my mum, a self-taught seamstress, would always dress me and my sisters in the quirkiest outfits and when I was old enough to dress myself I struggled to find anything on the high street I considered to be modest.

Q&A •

“MODEST FASHION SEEMS TO FINALLY BE HAVING ITS MOMENT AFTER BREAKING BARRIERS AND AS A MUSLIM WOMAN, IT FEELS LIKE IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING.”

Q: How would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? A: Many would disagree saying fashion and religion cannot coexist, I believe everyone has their own interpretation of modesty, and are on his or her own personal journey. The hijab has religious significance and dressing modestly is my commitment to the choice of covering my head. But fashion and art is also a lifestyle choice for me and if I can find a connection in all, then there is room for them all to co-exist. Q: The term “influencer” has become somewhat distorted as critics often say that social media personalities haven’t done anything important enough to be classed as influencers. What’s your opinion on this, especially as someone who represents and creates content for followers of modest fashion? A: Influencers, Dina Tokio and Hana Tajima entered the media at a time when modest fashion was unheard, they represented hundreds of thousands of girls across the world who needed a voice, a source of inspiration. I class them as influencers because in those times I was actually one of those young females looking for inspiration and they influenced me to find my own identity. It is social media personalities like them that are the true influencers, the individuals who paved the way for the vast platform of bloggers you see on social media these days. I also agree that the term influencer is often distorted and many personalities do nothing of significance for us to class them as such, but if these same social media personalities unravel the confidence of a young girl somewhere then they influenced at least one person. Q: When linked, it makes sense that modesty and the hijab go hand in hand. But do you feel that women who wear the hijab are quickly boxed as “modest” rather than being seen for their whole style or their mind and skills? A: No matter who you are, we all use clothes to express ourselves, we wear the same clothes as everybody else but just style them in a more conservative way. There is always a battle of being perceived as a stylish hijabi as opposed to just being stylish. Working in the fashion industry, I often felt maybe without a hijab I could climb up the career ladder quicker or be presented with more opportunities in life. But the strength and respect I gained throughout my journey as a result of the choice I made and with my hijab on my head, has changed the perceptions surrounding modesty and a modest woman in general. The choice of putting on a hijab and making a conscious commitment displays control of your mind and emits strength in the values you hold, skills which should outweigh any stereotypes of a “modest” woman. Q: Some women have been marginalised for generations for wearing a headdress. Does sharing your modest lifestyle on social media help to break the prejudice and perception that the hijab is “oppressive”? A: Social media is used to express ideas, whether you post about current events, social occurrences, fashion, politics or just your day-to-day life, and religion is no different. fact magazine

45

For generations, it was not the hijab that held women back, but prejudice. The new way our generation connects with one another rather than generalised news gives us a fresh dimension to connect to people in a way we never could before. And by making the conscious decision to share any lifestyle or ideas on social platforms, not only a modest interpretation, is a stand in the face of oppression. If through social media we show the rest of the world the vibrancy and diversity of hijabi women then we are helping to break the glass ceiling. Q: What would you say to people who think you’re not “free” because you dress modestly? A: There is always a choice when it comes to what we do with our lives, some people may have an incorrect perspective that everyone must live a specific way. Dressing modestly has not restricted me from making the most important decisions in life, whether it be a relationship, career choices or travelling, I was “free” to make the worst mistakes and the biggest achievements, just like everybody else. If we all as individuals uphold the values of freedom and choice, then I should be allowed to wear whatever I want, without judgment. Q: Finally, is there anything missing from the modest fashion movement that you would like to see being addressed – what are your predictions for the future of modest fashion? A: The rise of the modest fashion movement has empowered women through the confidence to express themselves and finally have a place within the mainstream but really how empowering is it buying into a mainstream perception of modesty or how expressive can you be when dictated as to 46

what is socially acceptable as modest fashion. There needs to be an acceptance and realisation that this is not the newest trend or seasonal campaign, it is a way of life - a modest lifestyle choice for many. The religious identity behind the modest clothing should be at the forefront of the modest fashion movement. The future of modest fashion should be to see true women of modesty who have designed the clothing and articulated the campaigns, women of strength who are celebrated not just for their diversity but their skills and mind. ✤

FAZILA’S STYLE ADVICE FOR GIRLS WHO ARE KEEPING MODEST BUT WANT TO SHOW SOME FLAIR… Since moving to Qatar I initially struggled to dress modestly in the intense desert heat, trying to maintain coverage without the layering - something I have become accustomed to whilst growing up in the UK. So, I have put together a few Dila covered style tips to help keep up with current trends without compromising coverage. 1: Two-pieces are really having a fashion moment right now and they are the easiest way to stay modest, don a two-piece and tick the style and modesty box all together. 2: Loose-fitting silhouettes are the most elegant ways to dress modestly, wide trousers paired with an oversized buttoned shirt can create the classiest look. 3: A bold printed skirt is the best way to add flair, with a t-shirt for coverage and to keep cool in the summer months. Bonus Tip: Add dainty barely there jewellery for a sleek and polished look.

DARING, DREAMY AND DEFIANTLY DIGITAL Another strong young lady in all her vibrancy and talent – there;s a good reason why Hala AlAbbasi is our arts spotlight this month. FACT’s Shabana Adam talks to the Digital Artist and Calligraphist about creative spark, representations of modest life and the connection between fashion, religion and art… fact magazine

49

• ARTS SPOTLIGHT

H

ala AlAbbasi’s instagram profile is a gallery of bold colours and strong images; portraits of women, depictions of summer in the Gulf, and plenty of iconic imagery that exudes an overwhelming sense of fun and positivity. “Beauty and nature inspires me,” she says. “When I start to draw, I allow myself to be guided by the work which is in the process of being born. I have confidence in it. I do not think about it. The hours on each artwork differs and depends on the style of the design, and the details which I dig into to create the final result. It took me years to get to where I am now by practicing art everyday,” Hala explains. It’s important to highlight that Hala’s creative side is a result of a type of art that has been around since the 1970s, and various names have been used to describe it. For the sake of modern day, we’ll go with Digital Art. This is where an image is predominantly computer generated, scanned or drawn using a tablet. Hala mostly uses her iPad Pro and Apple pencil as well as the Procreate App to produce her illustrations and portraits. She also utilises vector-drawing software with Adobe Illustrator by using the pin tool and shapes, which are outlined and can be filled with various colours and patterns. This tends to produce a harder edge or graphic look for her professional work. The process might be a cool and contemporary one, but the philosophy is still one of a traditional artist. “When it comes to the tools and techniques, I would say that art is not about the tools used to create it, but the vision, message, or emotion of the artist who can express their idea through lines, form, colour, pigmentation, composition and rhythm,” Hala says. “The artist can combine different features, effects, techniques and media to create their own unique vision.” If you’re new to the world of Digital Art, don’t let it intimidate you. The images are just as beautiful and daring, in some cases even more so, than a traditional pencil drawing or painting. Colour is more vivid, expression is deeper and there’s a whole new dimension added to something as simple as a portrait. “Digital art is like any other art,” Hala tells us. “It’s just created by using different tools than the more traditional arts. It took me years to draw everyday and experiment with different styles until I found what I love the most. “So I decided to focus on the digital side of my artworks, because that is what reflects me the most, and I also enjoy it so much,” she continues. “When it comes to the digital world, I feel like it is much less restricted than conventional mediums for artistic integration and manipulation. “Moreover, moving in between reality and the digital world gives me a push to do more and be more, it gives me hope and joy and all I want is to reflect this to others. It’s my gateway, and it’s my freedom,” she adds. Hala is not only challenging critics in the industry who believe that digital work has a lack of connection to an audience, she is also championing a form of art that is often overlooked by putting her own stamp on it, whilst living a free lifestyle driven by choice. She often draws portraits of women, random faces, (she even produced our incredible cover) as symbols of beauty 50

and strength. “Women in general, they inspire me the most,” Hala shares. “They reflect the real beauty and real power and strength in this world. I look for the depth in each woman, which can be found in all of us. Thriving women give meaning to life, and add hope to this world which reflects my purpose of creating artworks centered around them.” A refreshing perspective and one of the reasons why we chose Hala as our arts spotlight this month is, of course, to learn more about her opinions and experience of modest living as a young, Arab artist. It’s interesting to find that Hala, like hundreds of thousands of Muslim women everywhere, views modest fashion as a form of expression that boosts confidence. “Modest fashion gives me more options of clothing and to be creative in how I put together my outfits,” she says. “I now think outside the box and have developed an individual sense of style. It gives me the ability to dress in what I love but to add my own artistic twist to keep my outift elegant and simple, which in turn allows me freedom to express myself publicly.” When asked: how would you describe the connection between fashion, modesty, religion and art? Is there room for them all to exist side by side? Hala says: “If there is one thing that connects all four, in my opinion, it would be freedom. The freedom of choosing and matching colours, patterns, materials and styles and to be who you are as a woman. “Fashion and modesty reflect the world around it, and it could be for anyone which can be perceived and interpreted in a myriad of ways. Although, Muslim women who dress modestly are highly visible both on the streets of modern cities and in the media,” she adds. “When it comes to all four, it is important to reflect the beauty of modesty by being inspired by art, religion, and fashion.”

Back to Hala’s creative flair, her love of digital art began at an early stage in life, and even back then, it was something about the vivacity of the images that stirred her. “I remember as a kid, I would always pay attention to graphics,” Hala recalls. “They were a reflection of what I loved and my thoughts. The look, materials, quality, colours and feel were so desirable to me. I would observe and study the colours, patterns, design and illustrations and soon enough I wanted to discover the digital world to create what I love the most,” she says. Hala’s energy is becoming of her work. She is unapologetically a digital artist, a thinker, a celebrator of life and a staunch supporter of women in all their forms – fierce, vulnerable, outspoken or shy – and you get to see this through her dreamy and sometimes mysterious images. Alongside the modest lifestyle movement there’s a growing artistic revolution taking place – one that is challenging conventional art forms and garnering the attention of people in the Gulf and beyond. Hala is a part of this cool, unbound, selfdetermined 21st century crusade, and it’s time for the critics to sit up and take note! ✤

ARTS SPOTLIGHT •

Q: Do you remember the very first piece of art or illustration that you created – what was it and how did it make you feel? A: During my childhood years at school, I remember when I first started to use the mouse on the computer to draw with Paint. I drew three girls and I loved how it made me feel, as it was a real hard challenge to put all of my focus and control on it. When I did the first one, I wanted to do more. Deep down I believed in my skills and abilities. I was always interested and I explored with different drawing applications and used adobe photoshop for the first time back then. I was obsessed to learn more and grow. I simply enjoyed every little process with every little detail I made. I knew then that I never wanted to stop. I wanted to embrace myself and let my passion and love for digital art drive me wherever it was going to take me. Q: What would you say to people who think that women who choose to dress modestly are not “free”? A: Modest fashion isn’t limited to Muslim women; it’s also popular internationally. Modest fashion shows love to women and speaks awareness and wisdom to others when it comes to covering up to feel comfortable and accepted within most communities. It feels great to be able to dress in a modern yet stylish and beautiful way that brings confidence to be more

fashion-forward. The biggest brands and fashion companies have started to launch hijab and abaya collections within their clothing lines in the last two years. Muslim women can now express themselves freely. Dressing modest for women shows self-respect and love of each one to others, and lets them get creative freely without being judged by others. Q: What advice would you give to up-and-coming, young, budding illustrators or Digital Artists? A: I believe that every artist has their own creative ‘truth’ which I think matters the most. It’s about taking many tiny baby steps to achieve and maintain quality and continuity. It’s about commitment and dedication. It has to do with inhaling and exhaling. Getting in depth, letting it be with no expectations. What I love about art as a form is that it has no limitations or restrictions; art is a total freedom. Any beginner illustrator or digital artist has to start from somewhere, experiment with drawing apps, electronic brushes and tools that help you to translate hand motions, cutting and pasting to create a new look and pose real challenge to those who explore these new digital avenues until they grow internally to be extraordinary.

ROCK

Raise Vibration

By Lenny Kravitz

Combining good old-fashioned rock with glam and soul has always been Lenny Kravitz’s magic formula. After ushering in the gritty rock music era of the 1980’s, the American singer-songwriter is back with another hit record. Promising to be one of Kravitz’s most eclectic; Raise Vibration features the singer playing most of the instruments himself with longtime guitarist Craig Ross as the only collaborator. A ruminative commentary on the current global state of affairs, Kravitz’s eleventh studio album is all about moving forward through higher understanding. Displaying his discontent with the sociopolitical climate, It’s Enough is a lengthy single featuring a distinct soulful groove. A socially-conscious gem, the track sums up the sentiment of the times while delivering an absolute banger. Known for always sticking to his own beat, Kravitz holds nothing back on his latest release. An atmospheric funk single, Low deals with the issue of preconceptions in the beginning of a relationship. Its multilayered vocals and guest appearance by Michael Jackson give it a musical edge. Staying true to his unique brand of rock, Kravitz transcends all musical boundaries while giving the world a lot to think about.

T

he Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas is so well located that if you forget your sunglasses or your toothbrush, there’s always Lagoona Mall over the road! But, if like the majority of staycationers, you’re looking for a retreat in the grounds of a beautiful hotel – this is where you’ll find everything and more. The hotel does feel big but that has more to do with how it stretches out as opposed to so many city hotels that go up to scrape the sky. We were immediately calmed by the water features of the large lobby and I was offered a warm welcome by the staff. The rooms are comfortable, modern and decently sized with homely amenities and a big bathroom with a lovely tub. All rooms have balconies which is a big plus, allowing you to veg out and admire the sea views with a good book and enjoy the calm serenity as you take in the marvelously manicured gardens and lush lawns. To get the weekend going, I had a cool beverage in Dunes as an acoustic band played a soft set of guitar covers and I was fast feeling the weekend vibes. We got a table in the FACT award-winning Thai restaurant, Isaan, and had an evening of sumptuous food in an intimate and very beautiful environment. The venue is so well designed and though busy, it isn’t noisy and it still feels private too. Staff are superb and advised us well on everything we ate. The duck curry was my favourite but in truth I don’t think we had a bad dish there at all – everything tasted delicious. Knowing we were going to have Friday brunch, I thought it wise to

check out their gym in advance of that. What a gym it is! It’s very large and boasts an array of state-of-the-art equipment for quad, core, cardio and weights training. The gym overlooks the indoor pool and was well used without being too busy. It had the positive feel of other trainers working out without there being a fight over any machine. Personal trainers were carrying out one to one sessions while I burned some calories to justify brunch. And speaking of brunch, the Santa Monica Breakfast Club is the scene for a great afternoon with friends. The large venue can pack a strong crowd and there is not a set theme but they do have a preference for seafood and egg based dishes which can be done to order. A buffet of cold seafood is offered and a carvery of meat. There were also sliders of burgers to pick at. The band from Dunes provided the perfect chilled vibe of acoustic tunes to get us through the afternoon and we were in no hurry to leave. When we did eventually depart, we spilled on to the beach to watch the sun set and cool down in the sea. On my last day, I checked out the water sports that the hotel offers. This is a winning feature at the Grand Hyatt as few hotels offer the chance to get out on the water and make a splash. I went jet skiing for an hour. The lovely Mary met us at the hut at the very end of the beach where we were given the life jackets and shown to our jet skis. I had never tried it before but I got the hang of it immediately and was off at full throttle through the waters of the West Bay Lagoon and making real waves. fact magazine

I went skiing around the edge of the Pearl and saw the local surroundings in a fresh light at the angle you get from the sea and also saw parts of the nearby Pearl that I never knew existed before. It was a great rush of adrenaline and I’ll be going back there again one weekend to try more water sports. There is a lot to do at this hotel , so you’ll be very well occupied on a staycation. It is a stunning location which becomes apparent the second that you step into the majestic lobby with its 17-metrehigh, floor-to-ceiling window looking out to sea. The spa is at the farthest end of the west wing in a contained area of its own. It boasts gorgeous facilities and treatments to enhance your wellbeing in stylish and spacious surroundings – in fact, I’d go so far as saying that it’s one of the most appealing spas in Qatar. All throughout our stay, I noticed that the staff are amongst the best assets of the hotel. Fast, efficient, attentive and well trained – there is no request to big or too small for them! You would do well to spend some time at the Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas, and emerge refreshed and reenergised. ✤

Private pier at the Residence Zanzibar

Set in a lush tropical garden, our villa featured a large living room leading out to a private pool and cosy deck area. The room houses a very comfortable emperor bed and the bathroom has a gorgeous French bathtub and a beautiful back deck with an outdoor shower too. Honestly, this place is the perfect setting to spread out and cool off. At night you can pull the curtains and leave your window open to hear the sound of the waves and the soft chirp of tree frogs that ubiquitously appear after dark. With nature all around, you can close your eyes and feel like you’re starring in your very own castaway movie – albeit, with all the comforts of a luxury resort! It’s difficult to pin point the element we loved the most about this incredible resort. Maybe it was the stunning infinity pool which at its far end had a glass wall creating the infinity edge illusion, allowing beachcombers to peek into the underwater action. Or maybe it was the resort’s private pier which was the ideal spot to witness the daily sunset, or perhaps the private dinner on the beach with live entertainment? In reality, it was all of these things and countless more. The Residence is also a place that ensured we never went hungry, with two world-class restaurants to get our food fix. Breakfast each day was a feast but our gastronomic highlight was its international restaurant, The Dining Room, where we celebrated our last night and had a delicious grilled lobster ith a twist of local spice, absolutely delicious!

CULTURAL HERITAGE As part of our top five things to see, Stone Town is a must-visit area where you can easily spend a day through bustling market and street food vendors. Here, the best way to get around is with a private guide where you will also visit the House of Wonders, the Slave Market, the Sultan’s Palace Museum and the Old Arab Fort. Although it is a crying shame not more has been done to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city has still a charm that you’ll find in very few places on earth. Stone Town is a capital city with the character of Havana, and over centuries different cultures have influenced Zanzibar to become what it is today. Phoenicians, Persians, Indians, Portuguese, Omani Arabs and the British to name but a few have settled here at one time or another and added to the already vibrant local culture, creating a unique blend of Arabic, European, and African architecture and traditions. One of the best ways to observe this unique kaleidoscope of cultural heritage is from one of the rooftop terrace restaurants with unreal views of the city whilst eating authentic local food. Our highlight was the Emerson on Hurumzi which had a great atmosphere and from where it’s possible to see a Hindu temple, churches and mosques standing side by side and declaring their fraternity at prayer time!

THE ADVENTURE We would also recommend the Safari Blue tour which can be organized through the helpful team at The Residence Zanzibar. It is a great day out on a traditional dhow boat on the Zanzibar coast which offers countless made-for-Instagram beaches, snorkelling and swimming adventures at the Kwale coral reef with an overwhelming abundance of corals and colourful fish. The tour also includes a fantastic seafood buffet comprising grilled calamari, grilled fish, slipper lobster and chicken. Our adventure highlight was the walk onto an island’s tropical forest where you can find an impressive giant 500-year-old baobab tree that 70 years ago was bowled down by a storm. You can even climb up it and get a great view from the top! It really was breathtaking. BUCKET LIST DESTINATION Visiting Zanzibar feeds your soul as you manage to break the routine of our modern, tech-driven lifestyles. You will reconnect with the nature, culture, people and history. You will meet locals, who carry a hard life but remain friendly, and you will have the most real interactions and experiences that will soon make you realise that we don’t actually need “things” and possessions to be happy. WOMEN Taking the dream logic aesthetic of the cult series Twin Peaks as inspiration, the women’s collection is a mix of ladylike statement pieces and borrowed-from-the-boys wardrobe classics. Fifties movie icons, with their era-defining looks, provide further nostalgic stimulus. Opt for the chic precision of a sculpting wool dress and a cropped wool cardigan, worn under a nipped-in coated cotton trench coat. Or embrace your inner lumberjack, with the must-have indigo precision denim jacket and sturdy turn-up jeans, a jersey turtleneck lingering underneath. Then there’s the enlivening neon pop of a fuchsia-red feminine pleated skirt, set against the subversive wood grain print on a grungy viscose-silk suit. From square-toed boots to college kid cardigans; rough-and-ready selvedge denim to super-slick suiting; hard-edged biker jackets to bow-tied blouses, the H&M Studio collection has a neo-noir impulse this autumn, but there are multiple modern ways to wear it now. ✤

Go mad-for-plaid with fresh-yet-fierce punk trousers and the cropped puffer jacket, its traditional saturated tartan given a modish update thanks to an athletic silhouette. Take on the preppy appeal of chunky cord slacks in a crisp navy cut. Will you welcome the season’s key piece, the traditional toggle-fastened navy duffel coat in a sporty, scuba-style wool? Or play the class ace via the navy varsity sweatshirt, with its authentic Harvard University emblem? Following a similar theme, the ÖVERALLT collection, a product of collaboration from ten African designers and four IKEA designers. The collection is a partnership spanning continents and disciplines. Integrating culture with design, the collection aims to breathe life into age old stories and traditions from the African continent. IKEA’s focus on affordable technology is brought to animation in this year’s collection with FREKVENS. The FREKVENS collection makes technology accessible and easy to use, when put in the hands of a teenager. An integrated light and sound system, apt to boost the atmosphere of a mediocre house party, IKEA enables teens to conjure their imaginations to reality with their new technology collection. ✤

SEAFOOD SENSATION If you’ve ever been to South Africa, you’ll probably have come across Ocean Basket. The popular seafood chain first opened in Cape Town in 1995. ish and chips can sound like a plain and simple proposition but the best ideas are always the simplest. And at Ocean Basket, simplicity and execution wins above all! The venue itself has a homely welcome to the venue and not just becuase of its highly friendly and efficient staff. It is inviting thanks to its design of earthy wooden colours, little lanterns and rustic tables and chairs feel. It’s clean, tidy, warm and modern but not ostentatious. Front of House manager, Enrico, is energetic and enthuses about the menu before you. The two chefs who launched the Ocean Basket 23 years ago were Greek and they bring a truly Mediterranean influence to their cooking. I wasn’t really expecting to take in sushi on my visit but the menu offers it and a platter is tasty and moreish. Sushi snobs should veer away because it’s neither authentic nor sophisticated – but it sure is nicely plated and very tasty. Bite into one of their California rolls or a panko salmon roll and you’ll get a great crunch texture that has shown why their sushi has become award worthy. They do all sorts with seafood and all of it is creative. The grilled prawn salad is a tasty and perhaps healthier option. They neither skimp on the size of the shrimps or the amount they layer on the salad. The avocado is the key ingredient in it, adding some Greek charm along with tomatoes, cucumbers and a lovely honey dressing with fried potato skins on the top to give it that crunchy quality. You might think you have to go out to a fancy restaurant to eat lobster but in actual fact, this place serves it up in a pan. Yes - they don’t even waste time plating it up. They cook lobster in a generous amount of garlic and serve it with French fries, rice and a juicy lemon to drizzle on it. We LOVED it! The signature dish is called the famous fish and chips. If, like me, you occasionally get those cravings for home cooked fried fish and chips, Ocean Basket answers to that call. The fish is hake, which is a white fish you get off South Africa’s Atlantic coast and it’s a soft and delicious piece of fish that they cook in a light and slightly crispy batter with home made chips. Pure perfection! This place contines to evolve and tailor its menu to the tastes of the town. Chris Cook, the chief operating officer of Ocean Basket told us: “The new menu from Ocean Basket features exciting new additions as well as all of your favourite seafood dishes from the old menu. Offering a fresh and vibrant menu at even greater value, Ocean Basket is a destination for all seafood lovers,” he added. “With seasonal offerings and an expanded Mediterranean Sushi and Mezze selection, we are thrilled to offer our customers an 84

You won’t be leaving hungry so make sure you order as many taste-bud-satisfying dishes as you like! ✤

HOT LIKE FUEGO! It’s a bold choice when you decide to call a venue Fuego – translating to fire – because you’re telling the world that you’re going to deliver strong, unforgettable food with flair. FACT’s Craig Ferriman went to see if Fuego at the Shangri-La Hotel Doha lives up to its statement-making, fiery name… fact magazine

here are lots of five-star hotels that can boast a great restaurant to rightly be proud of. Few hotels can boast a portfolio of catering outlets - there are probably only a handful in Qatar. The Shangri-La Hotel Doha is definitely one of those, and Fuego is worthy of great claim. Fuego is situated on the first floor and is a proudly Argentinian restaurant. The venue is cosy and intimate. It is not small - probably occupying half that floor of the hotel but somewhere, tricks of lighting that are duly dimmed, low ceiling, dark carpets and wooden floors with brown wood on the walls all help to offer something sexy and cool. Chef Mariano sat with us and talked us through the incredible menu that makes this place an absolute must-visit for foodies across town. Our evening got off to a super start courtesy of the Jamón de Kobe appetiser which comprises homemade Argentine Kobe ham, quince, caramelised onion purée and walnut butter with their own homemade toast. The chef was proud of the geographical diversity of Argentinian cooking displayed in their menu as evidenced by four different Empanadas from four Argentinean regions - from as far north as La Quiaca to Ushuaia in the south. And each one was a treat for the palate – we polished them off with gusto! The expectations and excitement in any Argentinian restaurant surely crescendos in the entree of meats. We were brought of tray of their top cuts. It even included smoked baby goat – something different yet delectable. There was also lomo, tenderloin, striploin cabrito, chicken thighs with sweet breads, grilled cheese and a snaking chorizo sausage. Can you say carnivore party? We were in our element here! When it came to desserts, we sampled a little taste of nearly all of them. To my surprise, they nailed the desserts to the same high standard as the savoury offerings. Try to leave some room for the helado de dulce de leche which is their homemade dulce de leche icecream, walnut crumble and chocolate sauce. It’s incredible. The white, milk and 88

dark chocolate of Bariloche is another option that is super rich but oh-so-delicious. Truthfully, it was hard to isolate one good dessert, as they were all VERY good. Those who love the music of Latin America can look forward to either tango or salsa on Saturday nights as the sounds of South America compliment the flavours of Fuego. One thing that they have done recently is to redesign the menu so tha if you don’t want the total extravagance of the a-la-carte, you can opt for their set menu which allows you to choose one dish per course from a smaller range at a much more affordable price. This idea is in keeping with quite a few other restaurants that I’ve visited recently that have scaled back their menu to offer a more competitively priced, simplified choice of signature dishes and greatest hits. In times of ever increasing choice and tough competition between high standard restaurants, the game is on to get your attention. I can honestly say that Fuego got my attention right away and kept it until the very last bite. This could well become a new firm favourite in my list of dining choices – may the flame of Fuego burn strong and, as the instagram generation says, may the food continue to be LIT! ✤

THE BRUNCH LIFE Doha’s Friday brunch scene is a strong one, so to stand out you really need to bring your A-game! FACT’s Craig Ferriman went to check out the foodie offering at Mövenpick Hotel West Bay Doha, and this is the verdict...

B

runch at the Mövenpick Hotel West Bay Doha is a functional, familyfriendly event that will tick a lot of boxes. It’s centrally located in West Bay and is a more affordably-priced Friday food experience than so many of its city centre competitors. It’s held in Forknife restaurant which is the large international dining outlet on the first level that occupies half the floor. True to Swiss hospitality, ForKnife is an all-day dining restaurant offering a choice of buffet or à-la-carte dining options, featuring the freshest selection of international dishes including seafood, hot and cold meats, handtossed salads and delectable desserts that will leave you truly spoiled with choice. This is the heart and soul of the food offering at the hotel so we had high expectations. When we visited, sports teams visiting Qatar and large family gatherings mingled and munched side by side on a large spread of international cuisine. Chef Saju leads a kitchen of staff who prepare a vast array of tasty treats. In the centre of the floor, a large buffet boasts seafood including a gigantic quantity of prawns, mussels and oysters as well as freshly prepared sushi rolls. Hitting the hotspot with all seafood lovers, you can test your adventurous side or opt for something a little more familiar. A carvery sits beside the seafood where you can slice off thick, tasty slivers of strip loin beef with gravy – delicious. There are hot items on the buffet in big pots. This includes the shish taouk with rice, a lovely butter chicken, Moroccan tagine and steamed vegetables. There was also a live cooking station that does pasta and shawarma right in front of you, cooked to order. They were especially good for filling us up on a lazy Friday afternoon! The light coming through the floor-toceiling windows gives you the feeling of being outside without the hassle of the heat. The beverages were very pleasant. Their green paradise is a mean lemon mint drink and all their mocktails are made with fresh ingredients and flair. Forknife has a dedicated area for the

little ones where they can play, run around and return to the table for more food as and when they choose. As the Movenpick brand is steeped in the heritage of Swiss hospitality, you are tactically advised to leave some room in your stomach for the plethora of sweet treats and almighty good desserts. The ice cream is insane and the chocolate fountain with marshmallows is a must. The um ali is also a delicious palatepleaser. I would actually say that this is a brunch where, perhaps unusually, the desserts are the best part of the entire meal! Go and find out for yourself. ✤

BLISS SPA

W

Doha Hotel & Residences is always busy, people hang about the lobby to catch up with friends, sip on a beverage and check their emails, or even just casually sit and people watch, especially at weekends. The ‘Whatever Whenever’ tag conveys a pleasant attitude to service - testimony to good training. I would say this is what makes W Doha different from other hotels, their amazing boldness! I booked myself in to enjoy a pampering day, some muchneeded me-time.

Founded in 1996 in New York, Bliss ignited a modern spa revolution by combining a clever menu of super-effective services and a fun, “no-attitude” atmosphere. With touches like rhythm and blues tunes, a brownie buffet and the most talented staff on the planet, it’s no wonder they are always super busy. I booked two treatments; the Triple Oxygen Facial and the Hot Wax Candle Massage. The Triple Oxygen Facial is one of the most popular facials, the specialist starts with a very gentle cleaning of the face, then the exfoliation scrub is applied followed by the pre-extraction oxygen wrap. After that, the therapist makes the necessary extractions. An amazing face massage technique is used to make sure all products are absorbed and everything like puffy eyes and fine lines are tackled. The specialist then places a calming oxygen and milk mask to lock in the moisture allows the skin to take it all in as she massages the arms, neck, shoulders and décolletage. To finish the treatment, the specialist applied an enzyme pack and vitaminised oxygen spray. The results are incredible; my skin is so radiant and glowing! After my facial it was time for the Hot Wax Candle Massage. This massage features Scottish handmade candles infused with natural essential oils, specifically designed for candle massages. The oils awaken your senses and deeply nourish your skin, enhancing the full massage experience. The 60-minute full body massage of medium pressure releases all stress and tension from my muscles. This treatment helps my body to unwind deeply. Afterwards I felt completely relaxed and revitalised.

W Café FIT GYM I started my day in the gym, I booked a 30-minute EMS session. EMS training is performed by placing small electrodes on different parts of your body. Small electrical impulses are then sent to the muscles contracting them. These impulses reach deep muscle layers, which are harder to activate through normal training. The effect of the impulses causes the muscles to work 90% harder than they would in a conventional training session. I was given a cotton top and leggings to wear, and then a bodysuit with wet pads to facilitate the flow of the electric current is fitted. The session starts by allowing the electric current to pass to different parts of the body. The beauty in this is that the trainer can control the percentage of the electric impulse to a specific part of the body that you want to focus on. The session usually includes a warm up; followed by lunges, squats, sit ups, planks, shoulder press and finally a cool down. EMS has many benefits. The fact that is a complete body workout in just 20 minutes provides convenience to many people who handle busy schedules. It can help in relieving back pain, improves blood circulation, treats cellulite and increases metabolism.

After my EMS session and pampering time at the spa, I’d worked up an appetite and where better to get some lunch than W Café? In fact, all of W Doha’s dining outlets are known for their quality food and service. At W Café, they have recently launched a new menu featuring an array of salads and light bites. For starters, I enjoyed a fresh and delicious Red Quinoa Salad with feta cheese, sunflower seeds, avocado, mango, cucumber, celery, and carrot all drizzled in a lip-licking ginger honey vinaigrette. I absolutely adore this salad, I could literally eat it every day - it was so fresh and healthy but full of flavour. I also tried the Italian Grilled Chicken Sandwich, a delicious and huge sandwich made with focaccia bread and filled with mozzarella, avocado, fresh herbs and mayonnaise. My lunch was just perfect, light and tasty! I pair my meal with one of their wonderful vitamin-packed detox drinks - the Ultimate Green; celery, kale leaves, green apple, and lime and ginger - just the power boost I needed to get ready and tackle an afternoon of meetings! ✤
