THE NEW INTENSITY
Boat Shows It’s all about مسوم
It’s our first issue of the year, and with a full year behind us now we cruise into 2016 full of confidence and optimism for the months to come. We’re not reflecting on 2015 – we did that last issue – so this time we’re looking ahead at the coming season and relishing what’s in store.
And what’s in store for us is beautiful weather, fine sailing – as demonstrated by the Extreme Sailing Series (see p.22) and the EFG Sailing Arabia Tour which both kicked off in February – and spectacular boat shows.
The first of the year was the Kuwait Yacht Show, which we visited in February. The KYS 2016 is the season opener, taking place in one of the wealthiest nations in the world, and as such attracts a fair showing of regional premieres and product launches to its pontoons. In this issue we talk to organiser and co-founder Zeina Mokkadam to find out more about the event and its successes.
However, while KYS 2016 is the season opener, the Dubai International Boat Show 2016 is the biggest show in the region, and a highlight of the global boat show calendar, and you can find more details on our News Opener (p.12). We’ll be carrying more in-depth coverage of DIBS2016 in our next issue.
Elsewhere on these pages you can also find a more detailed feature on the stunning Riva 88 Florida ‘convertible’ super yacht, which we saw launched regionally at the Abu Dhabi GP last year, as well as the super-convenient Sealver Waveboat 525 jet ski boat, which brings you the best of both worlds.
Enjoy, and all the best for 2016!

custom Line navetta 42 LauncheD in miami
At Yachts Miami Beach 2016 the Ferretti Group announced the birth of the biggest Custom Line Navetta ever built, the Navetta 42. The Navetta 42 is the first Custom Line ship over 300 GT, and will be launched in 2018. The new yacht is designed by Studio Zuccon International Project under the guidance of the Ferretti Group’s Strategic Committee and developed by the in-house Engineering Department. The yacht will offer expansive spaces across four decks that will be fully customisable, with a huge owner’s suite on the main deck, while the versatile lower deck can be designed with 4 VIP or 5 normal suites.
Ferretti Launches DeFence Division
The Ferretti Group recently launched a brand-new division. Ferretti Security and Defence (FSD) will focus on designing, developing and producing high-tech naval platforms with specifications intended for the security, patrol and defence of coastline and international and territorial waters.
FSD benefits from the considerable production capacity of Ferretti Group’s 6 boatyards, as well as the superior technology and quality. These solid foundations put them in an ideal position to build vessels in steel, aluminium and composite materials specifically designed for applications such as Search and Rescue or Patrol, Surveillance, Anticrime and Antiterrorism operations.
The first “Fast Patrol Vessel” built by Ferretti Security and Defence is a high performance, 20m vessel capable of speeds in excess of 50 knots and a range of over 400 miles.
heesen Launches m/Y amore mio
Heesen is proud to announce that YN 17145 –also known as Project Necto – was launched in November of last year. The launching operations took place at the Heesen facility in Oss in the form of a private ceremony, where the owners christened their new yacht Amore Mio.
Amore Mio is the largest and most powerful sports yacht ever built in the Netherlands. Her sleek, 45-metre aluminium hull, powered by two MTU 16V diesel engines, will reach a thundering top speed of 30 knots.
The solidity and integrity of the semi-displacement aluminium hull, designed by Heesen in-house naval architects, provide both rapid acceleration and smooth power. With a range of 2.750nm Amore Mio can cross the Mediterranean with ease, or cruise the entire length of the Caribbean from St. Barths to Grenada, on only one tank of fuel.
GuLF craFt showcases Yachts in oman
Gulf Craft recently hosted an exclusive preview event at the Almouj Marina at Al Mouj Muscat. Speaking at the event, Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft, said an increased desire to spend more quality time on water mirrors regional trends, in which comfort, space, and the capacity to entertain are becoming a priority for existing and prospective owners.
“However, this does not mean everyone is looking for the same experience,” added Bamps. “Although we have noticed this emerging trend, we understand that our discerning Omani clientele have diverse needs and requirements, and that is why each innovation in our wide range of semi-custom craft offers a distinct cruising experience.” Among the yachts and boats on display were the award-winning Majesty 135 superyacht, and the stunning Majesty 105.
oman to host americas cup in 2016
The Sultanate of Oman will create history when it becomes the first country in the Middle East to host the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in February 2016. For many of the America’s Cup sailors, including Sir Ben Ainslie, Dean Barker and Franck Cammas, the waters of Oman will be familiar territory, since Muscat has been hosting high performance multihull racing every year since 2011.

The Kuwai T Yach T Show 2016
Last month saw the successful completion of the fourth annual Kuwait Yacht Show, which took place at the Marina Crescent, in Kuwait City, bringing together hundreds of yachting, boating and marine leisure brands. Hadag talks to co-founder Zeina Mokaddam about the history and success of the show…
Can you give us a brief overview of the history of the Kuwait Yacht Show?
The first edition of the Kuwait Yacht Show was held in 2013. It was a vision of two people, myself and Nouf Al Hajeri. We recognised the void in Kuwait’s marine sector, and we were determined to establish a national yacht show that would grow and endure over the years. The initial challenge was to convince potential exhibitors, sponsors and media of the value a yacht show would add to Kuwait, but once this was achieved, momentum grew rapidly.
How closely do you work with the Kuwait authorities for the event?
Very closely. It would be impossible to hold an event of this scale without doing so, but we quickly received generous offers of help and support from all areas within Kuwait.
Our first edition was opened not by one Minister of State, but jointly by five. Our second was held under the patronage of the Prime Minister. Without exception, all the government entities we’ve approached have been more than supportive.
For example, the Kuwait Customs Office were kind enough to allow all exhibiting yachts that travelled to Kuwait by sea to come straight to our venue where they set up a temporary office for clearance.
And the opening ceremony was a joint effort with the Kuwait Coast Guard, Kuwait Air Force and Maritime rescue mobilising all their resources to give KYS the beautiful backdrop of a 20m water fountain.
Can you tell us what the highlights were of this year’s event?
The headlines of this year were the 11 regional premieres, including three Azimuts, two Supremas and two De Antonio yachts, to name just a few.
We open the annual calendar of regional boat shows so, by having it in February, we have secured an exclusive position allowing us to feature and exhibit products for the first time in the region. It’s a key reason for the success of KYS for both exhibitors and the public alike.
How strong is the marine leisure industry in Kuwait?
Kuwaitis have long had a strong connection with the sea, and are natural seafarers. So, there are in excess of 15,000 registered leisure boats – one for every
44 Kuwaitis. This is a rate higher than in most developed countries. Such is the growth that marinas are full – there’s a pent-up demand for new berths. This is something the private sector is now reacting to, and additional spaces are being added, which soon fill up. It bodes well for the continued growth within this sector.
How important is the Kuwait Yacht Show to the marine leisure industry in Kuwait?
That’s a difficult question for us to answer – you’d be better to ask the marine leisure industry this one! What we can say, and say with confidence, is that we opened the first edition of KYS in response to a demand. Every year since then the industry has grown, as has the show. Are we important to the marine leisure industry? We’d like to think so.
10th ExtrEmE saiLinG series KicKs oFF in Dubai
The 2016 Extreme Sailing Series was officially launched at the Dubai International Marine Club in February with a full lineup of eight world-class teams from eight nations confirmed.
As the event heads into its tenth year, a selection of the world’s top sailors were trained and hosted last month at Dubai International Marine Club. Expectations are high as the teams prepare to set sail on a new fleet of GC32 catamarans and a new generation of foiling boats which are partly manufactured in the UAE.
Following on from the launch in Dubai, the series will touch down in an additional seven iconic urban city centres, including the Portuguese capital Lisbon which will makes its debut as a new stadium sailing racecourse. In previous years host cities have attracted more than one million spectators and have proved popular with residents and visitors alike.
The competition on the water promises to be fierce and action-packed with America’s Cup legends, Olympic heroes and world champions preparing to do battle at close quarters. Among the crews will be veterans of 13 Olympic campaigns and 22 America’s Cup campaigns. Between them they also hold 27 World Championship titles, 27 European Championships and 106 National Title Holders.
The series will be visiting Oman, China, Wales, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Portugal and Australia.

Hadag talks to Bahrain-based world record-setting kite surfer Anke Brandt, as she prepares for another world record endurance challenge from Bahrain to the UAE in the coming weeks…
AnkE BrAnDT is a professional kite surfer currently living in Bahrain. Having first picked up surfing in 2009, she has since gone on to compete successfully in numerous international events. In 2014, she made a Guinness World Record attempt to completely circumnavigate the mainland of Bahrain, in which she set a world distance record for a female kite surfer at 251km.
This March, Anke plans to attempt another world record by kite surfing from Bahrain to the United Arab Emirates, a distance of around 600km, depending on where she makes landfall.
How are you preparing for the attempt?
I’m doing cross-functional training, so not just kit surfing, but also weight training, yoga, running different distances for endurance and cardio.
I’m going long-distance with the kite whenever there is enough wind. I’ll do trials of staying awake for 24 hours, to get used to what that is like, and we do also obviously try to kite at night, because that presents a whole new challenge in itself.
We’re also doing a boat trip from Bahrain to the UAE just to get an idea of the distance, the time, what the water is going to be like. It’s kind of a mental training, to make sure there are no surprises.
What’s the most challenging aspect?
I would say it’s the unpredictability, because the wind will change throughout the day, the waves will change, the tide will change, so it’s really about learning to go with the flow. For example you might plan to have a rest stop on the water, but at that point the wind might pick up so dramatically that there’s no chance to stop. There are lots of factors that are really dependent on Mother Nature that you really can’t plan for.
Why endurance kite surfing?
I discovered kite surfing for myself, and I just found that I really loved going long distance on the board, exploring islands, going from A to B, rather than just freestyle. When I started doing that, like going around Bahrain, it was just for fun, and then when I’d done more of that I thought, let’s try and go all the way!
Look out for our follow-up feature on Anke’s attempt in the next issue of Hadag! You can find out more about the attempt and the charity she’s raising for at ankebrandt.com.
The sleek and stylish Riva 88 represents a stunning new concept in luxury motor yachts, offering the experience of both open cruiser and coupe in one sumptuous package.
irst seen by Hadag at the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix 2015, where the yacht was displayed alongside its sister vessel, the 88’ Domino Super, the classical and unmistakable style of the Riva 88’ Florida goes hand in hand with the technological innovation of the ‘Convertible Top’, drawing inspiration from the automotive sector.
‘Convertible Top’
The 88’ Florida is truly one of its kind in the entire yachting sector because of the innovative ‘Convertible Top’ system, an exclusive Ferretti Group patent installed for the very first time on this craft.
The Convertible Top system makes the yacht capable of shifting from an open to a coupé configuration and vice versa by automatically operating a hard top that can cover the pilot station in the cockpit, and integrates with the deckhouse at the level of the dinette, converting the boat into an open yacht. In the coupé configuration, the hard top is mechanically locked on the windshield and anchored onto the roll bar by means of two electro-hydraulic anchoring systems.
Operated by one single control, the system is monitored by sensors installed near the individual moving parts, so as to ensure the safety of both guests and the crew during operation.
There are four cabins belowdecks, including a master stateroom and VIP double cabin.
outdoor areas
The cockpit includes a large aft sun pad and a small sofa facing forward, in front of which is a roomy area that can be furnished with freestanding furniture. The central area is organized as a large dining and living room, and a linear sofa to starboard stands opposite the dining area, which is furnished with another L-shaped sofa near the table.
The large central pilot station features three seats, left of which is a chaise longue facing the stern - the ideal extension of the sofawhere one can relax while experiencing the thrill of cruising. Besides the dinette with a large C-shaped sofa, ‘concealed’ by the hard top, at the extreme bow the 88’ Florida makes available an additional relaxation area equipped with two sun pads.
Interiors
Below deck, the 88’ Florida includes four cabins and as many dedicated heads, all located beyond a living room that can also be used as an indoor dinette.
The master stateroom is located amidships and enjoys the utmost privacy. Three steps lead to the incredibly bright, sound-insulated, full-beam cabin. The bed is arranged lengthwise and is decorated by an elegant array of fabrics and colours, including the linen and cotton (or, upon request, cashmere) bedspread, striped cushions, and rug, all by Loro Piana.
The VIP double cabin is located at the extreme bow and receives an amazing amount of light through the double glazing that runs along its bulwark. It is furnished with two wardrobes and fitted with a private head with separate shower.
Performance
This new Riva yacht, equipped with MTU engines, can boast outstanding performance values. In the standard configuration, the 88’ Florida comes with two MTU 16 V 2000, 2435 mhp engines that allow it to reach a maximum speed of 38.5 knots and a cruising speed of 34 knots, ensuring a range of 310 and 340 nautical miles, respectively. A more powerful engine configuration features two MTU 16 V 2000, 2638 mhp engines that will push the craft to a maximum speed of 40.5 knots and a cruising speed of 35 knots, ensuring a range of 300 and 330 nautical miles, respectively.

From Eramotiv E
Coming across these unique creations at a recent exhibition, we were instantly drawn to the futuristic designs and the myriad possibilities they offered.
ThE FolloWIng are a new trio of bold Solar Hybrid Multi-Hull Superyachts, offered in lengths of 45 metres (three deck), 75 metres (five deck), and 125 metres (seven deck), from Eramotive.
It should be mentioned at this point that these are still just concepts, and that none have yet taken to water – Eramotive are currently showcasing the designs and the versatility they offer. The multi-hull design serves to increase the stability and deck space of the yachts, making for even more options as to what they can be used for.
The elliptical shape was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and unusual design (for a yacht, anyway), as well as its allowance for much more voluminous interior spaces. A vast range of
customisable interior possibilities open up for each individual owner, from a private leisure yacht, home on water to a vessel for scientific expeditions, a floating convention centre, an entertainment venue or even as a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel.
However, the appeal of the elliptical shape goes even further, allowing for eco-friendly yachting courtesy of the solar panels that can cover the exterior of the yachts, while maintaining wide angle views from within. The Photo-voltaic panels wrapping the exterior are also revealed as retractable awnings on the top decks, making it possible for Iris One Twenty Five to maintain zero carbon cruising at a speed of 10 knots.
The Iris Series is offered in full or semi Photovoltaic coverage. Iris One Twenty Five, with a coverage span of an area of 2000+ sq. m. and partial coverage of 1100+ sq. m on solid surface. Transparent glass areas may be utilized for an additional coverage of 1500+ sq. m.
The helipad on the Iris One Twenty Five has a retractable enclosure as well, allowing the space to be easily converted into a recreational area for all types of climates.
A hydroponic garden can even be added for true self-sufficiency at sea. An open layout two-tiered salon, VIP suites with saunas, multiple pools, an art gallery, cinema, grand library, tender garage with bamboo drop doors and area for showcasing up to twelve collector cars are also among the many possibilities available.
The Iris Forty Five features an array of sliding glass panels on both sides of the structure which open up the interior and fully expose an outside deck. The decks seamlessly retract at 1.8 metre lengths thus harmoniously merging the inside and outside spaces into one.
The Iris Series is designed to change your perception of what a yacht can be, whether you are looking at it from the outside or from within.

thE SEalvEr waveboat 525
We all love jet skis, and we all love speedboats. However, what happens when you want the best of both worlds, and more than two passengers, but you can’t afford a boat big enough for a tender bay? Well, you get a Sealver…
It’s no secret that the Gulf is obsessed with its jet skis. They can be seen tearing up and down the coast whenever the weather is decent. Fast, agile and huge amounts of fun, they do, however, have two major drawbacks – they only carry two, and have very little storage for gear.
This is where you need a jet ski boat like a Sealver. Sealver offer a range of solid and rigid inflatable hulls that can be docked with a jet ski as a propulsion unit, and detached as and when needed for on-water activities.
Our pick of the bunch was the wake boat-style 525. While there is a larger solid-hulled option available, the 656, we feel that with the 525 you’ll benefit from a better power-to-weight ratio from your jet ski, making for better towing capability. The 656 only offers slightly more space, with room for one more passenger and an extra 150kg of payload.
The 525 carries up to six passengers, with four on the boat and two on the PWC (or three, depending on the model of jet ski), making it ideal as a small family pleasure craft or for a small group of friends. There is a range of wake tower configurations available, depending on your requirements, and there’s even an option for a picnic table at the bow of the boat.
The docking and undocking process is extremely simple as well. You just ride the jet ski into the docking bay and secure it with a system of sturdy straps and buckles.
The 525 weighs in at just 350kg without the PWC docked. The power and speed of the boat obviously depends on the power of your PWC. However, the 525 is compatible with a range of high-powered Yamaha and Sea-Doo models such as the monstrous supercharged RXT-X 260RS, so don’t be concerned with performance when using the two crafts combined.
Perhaps the coolest thing about the Sealver 525 is that the hull floats of its own accord, so you can anchor up somewhere, and detach the jet ski for some hi-speed thrills while the rest of the passengers relax on the boat. When we say ‘best of both worlds’, we should really say ‘best of three worlds’, because not only can you enjoy power boating and jet skiing, but also tow sports as well!
It’s an extremely versatile and convenient setup for a fun day out on the water.
Sealver Waveboats are available in the GCC from Star Wave Boats.

One of the biggest events on the Kindgom’s calendar, the Bahrain F1 GP returns to the Bahrain International Circuit this April, bringing the glamorous road show along with it…
ThE ‘BIllIonAIrE’s sPorT’, Formula One attracts the world’s rich and famous to its races along with motorsports fans of all creeds. Celebrities are often seen wandering through the paddocks, and the marinas of all waterfront tracks such as Monaco, Abu Dhabi and Singapore attract billions in dollars worth of yachts to their berths.
This year, the Bahrain F1 GP will be the second race of the calendar, taking place after the Australian GP. Though Bahrain’s Grand Prix is a desert track, the small island nation’s marinas fill to bursting during F1 weekend, as visitors from across the Gulf flock to the country for the race weekend, and the five-star hotels become fully booked.
2016 promises to be no exception, as in addition to the exciting team line-up that promises some heated battles this year, it has been announced that global superstar DJ Avicii will be headlining the weekend’s thrilling list of off-track entertainment.
The racing itself promises to be full of action, with the Ferraris matching the Silver Arrows for speed in the pre-season testing, and the Renault and Honda engines that supply Red Bull and McLaren both showing vast improvements in terms of pace and reliability.
Added to that are the new teams of Haas F1, funded by billionaire NASCAR mogul Gene Haas and supplied extensively with Ferrari customer parts, and returning Renault F1 who, if you’ll remember, won the Championship with Alonso twice in 2005 and 2006.
It all adds up to what looks set to be an exhilarating Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix. To find out more, log on to www.bahraingp.com.
a chat with the boss
Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa is a long-standing figurehead at the Bahrain International Circuit. He has been closely involved with all aspects of the circuit’s activities since it began operations in 2004, both as an executive, and as a racing driver.
shEIkh sAlMAn began his career at the circuit as Head of Governmental Affairs, Public Relations and Marketing. In 2007, he was appointed COO directly under CEO Martin Whitaker, and upon Whitaker’s departure in 2010, assumed the role of acting Chief Executive, before being officially appointed by the circuits governing board shortly afterwards. Since then, Sheikh Salman has overseen all aspects of the circuit’s operations, including five successful F1 Grands Prix, and countless other events, races and community activities.
In what ways has being the CE of the Bahrain International Circuit differed from your previous role as Coo?
As CE you take overall responsibility to ensure that the BIC meets its targets and continues to grow as the Home of Motorsport in the Middle East. In this role, that means you are ultimately accountable whether that be success or failure. At the heart of it, that comes down to working with members of my team on a day-to-day basis instilling our values of “Pride, Passion and Performance” and through that, ensuring we continually improve everything we do.
You’ve been at the helm of the BIC since 2010, and have five successful Bahrain Grands Prix successfully completed. Which aspects of the role are becoming very comfortable now?
I have the comfort of knowing that I have a very dedicated, passionate and capable team behind me. The staff we have here at the BIC know what it takes to get the job done, especially for a mammoth task such as organising and running a major international event such as the Bahrain GP. I am pleased to say that everybody has, at the very least, met expectations in fulfilling their roles over the past few years, and our team continues to grow and get better each year. Having said that, I would not be doing my job properly if I were just aiming to stick within that comfort zone all of the time. Our aim is continually to improve on what we do.
and what aspects of hosting a gP still provide a fresh challenge each year?
Every year, we try to deliver something fresh for the fans; whether it’s in the racing programme or in the off-track package of entertainment. We always try our best to give the race-goer something new so that they keep on coming back each and every year, and I think we’ve done that.
What are some of the other challenges outside of f1 have you faced as CEo of the Bahrain International Circuit?
We’ve always sought to ensure that the BIC remains a self-sustaining business, and not simply to rely on F1 every year to make the business work. To help achieve that, we’ve worked on building a rich motorsport culture for the Kingdom, with our events here at BIC acting as a strong foundation.
We have established a major events schedule that runs throughout the year, whether that be local and regional racing series, corporate events and private hires. It is rare these days to find a weekend when the track is not completely booked out.
Our experience in managing major events in the Kingdom also means that our expertise can be transferred outside of motorsport. Our central involvement in the Bahrain Air Show every year is a great example of that and a further way we can maximise the skills of the team we have at the BIC.
aside from the Bahrain f1 gP, which other areas of activity within the circuit are maintaining the BIC as a centre of motorsports in the region?
We are the only circuit in the region to host the FIA World Endurance Championship with the Six Hours of Bahrain. This is quickly becoming one of the most popular and sought-after global racing series under the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and we are proud to be their home track in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, we have one of the longest-running circuit racing championships in the Middle East, the BIC 2,000cc Challenge, currently in its ninth season.
Also, we are the home base of the region’s most highly regarded one-make championship, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, as well as the only Land Rover Experience Centre in the Gulf.
Furthermore, we have our world-class karting facility. Bahrain International Karting Circuit was the first-ever karting track to host a CIK world championship-level race at night, something we are very proud of.
Then there is the Bahrain Drag Racing Championship or the newly launched Bahrain Superbike Championship, as well our Open Track and Drag and Drift public events.

FErrArI is a word synonymous with iconic sports cars and groundbreaking engineering. It is a brand that has motorsports coursing through its veins, yet has that Italian designer chic that feels just as comfortable in a casual drive along the Amalfi Coast as it does on a Formula One racetrack. Ferrari is proud of its achievements and motor sports DNA, but is determined to launch forward into the future in the tailwind of its strong brand values, carved out by its founder, Enzo Ferrari.
Where it all began
Ferrari has been at the forefront of both automotive design and engineering, be it in the world of sports cars, luxurious grand tourers, supercars or motor sport. The famous Italian manufacturer, symbolized by the iconic Prancing Horse motif, has obtained world recognition by creating exquisite pieces of art and fitting them with performancebased technologies of the highest order. Its exclusive catalogue boasts of one of the most famous names associated with the Ferrari brand –California, a Ferrari model name oozing heritage from every curve and vent.
The first Ferrari to bear the name California was the original V12engined 250 California, an exquisitely designed 2-seater spider produced in 1957, which has become renowned as being one of the greatest examples of automotive design of all time. Scaglietti built around 100 of these, some with aluminium bodies, and examples now fetch millions at auction. Long-wheelbase versions were built between 1958 and 1960 before being replaced by the short-wheelbase version.
Following in its footsteps was the equally impressive 365 California, less than 20 were ever built between 1966 and 1967. The exclusive nature of these Ferraris ensured that California became a hallowed name.
The Italian company unveiled a modern day reiteration of the California at the 2008 Paris Motor Show which evolved into the present generation California T, launched in 2014. The latest incarnation of the hard-top convertible has a new turbocharged V8, joining models such as the 1984 GTO and 1987 F40, hence the ‘T’ in the moniker.
The Ferrari California T’s modern design gives it a powerful personality in which sportiness and elegance meld in the classically seamless way of every Prancing Horse ever built. The design, an elegantly balanced interplay of convex and concave surfaces gives the new California T the sophisticated allure of an authentic Ferrari Grand Tourer.
With its softer curves, room for a small amount of luggage and easiergoing nature of the chassis for those long inter-continental journeys, the California family are some of the most sought after Ferraris ever built.

The California T today
The Ferrari California T epitomizes the sublime elegance, sportiness, versatility and exclusivity that have distinguished every California model since the 1950s.
The California T is a car brimming with innovation that will more than meet the expectations of discerning clients for whom fun behind the wheel is a priority, but who also demand a sumptuously comfortable Grand Tourer they can use every day. The California T is a brilliant expression of Ferrari’s sporty DNA, while its retractable hard top (RHT) and 2+ configuration, amongst other features, make it supremely versatile. Like all Ferraris, the California T boasts cutting-edge technological solutions that make it absolutely unique, most notably the new turbocharged V8 engine.
Turbo technology has an honourable place in Prancing Horse’s engineering tradition, thanks to iconic models of the likes of the GTO of 1984 and the F40 of 1987. It is now also, of course, back at the heart of our latest F1 single-seater. Maranello’s engineers have managed to design a remarkable power unit that combines classic Ferrari engine qualities, such as razor-sharp responsiveness, blistering performance, superbly powerful acceleration at all speeds and an exhilarating soundtrack, with the advantages turbo technology, such as drastically reduced emissions and fuel consumption, a high specific power output and compact dimensions. A genuinely unprecedented achievement that sets a new benchmark for the industry.
The California T sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds flat and from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.2 seconds. It is also more fuel efficient to the tune of approximately 15 per cent* than the previous California.
All these results were achieved thanks to solutions adopted on the F1 single-seaters, including a low-inertia, flat-plane crankshaft combined with innovative twin-scroll turbines to minimise throttle response times.
Certain of the manufacturing phases, mostly regarding castings, also make use of the same plant and production processes employed by the Scuderia. The California T’s engine produces an enthrallingly powerful sound that becomes even more impressive as revs increase.
The new model also boasts true sports car dynamics, thanks to lower steering wheel activity and quicker steering courtesy of a new steering box and new suspension set-up. New springs and latest-generation Magnaride dampers (now more than 50 per cent faster), combined with body motion accelerometers, reduce roll and pitch to deliver more precise handling whilst still guaranteeing an incredibly comfortable ride. Meticulous and in-depth design work has retained the dimensions of the previous model yet endowed the California T with a whole new personality. The car’s proportions were penned by the Ferrari Styling Centre in collaboration with Pininfarina, and are very much in line with Ferrari’s front-engined ethos. The California T’s cabin exudes a sense of warmth and craftsmanship, and was designed to be as ergonomic as possible, with luxurious semi-aniline leather trim. The space on-board is flexible too, and owners can make the most efficient use of its generous boot capacity even with the top down, thanks to the communication between the luggage compartment and rear seats.
The Human-Machine Interface encompasses the Ferrari steering wheel with integrated controls while the Turbo Performance Engineer (TPE) takes pride of place between the two air vents at the centre of dash. This is a sophisticated instrument with a touch-sensitive scroll surround and a digital display that provides indications on making the most efficient use of the new engine’s performance. The California T also has a new infotainment system with a large, extremely intuitive 6.5” display and a choice of both button and touch-screen controls.
The California T of today is underscored by excellence, heritage, prestige and track DNA. Continuously pushing the limits of technological innovation in every engineering area, Ferrari has and always has been the leader in classic design and superior performance. The company bridges the gap between the unique heritage of Enzo and the Prancing Horse, which has come to encapsulate Italian joie de vivre at its most essential, and the new world of cultural and technological hegemony. Ferrari’s deluxe approach to bespoke automotive design, razorsharp responsiveness, blistering performance, superbly powerful acceleration at all speeds and an exhilarating soundtrack known to all Ferraris, is at the heart of the California T. This is the Ferrari DNA.

Mourjan Marinas Environm E ntal Exc E ll E nc E
Few marina operators in the GCC take environmental awareness as seriously as Mourjan Marinas, who operates some of the cleanest facilities in Oman and Qatar, and collaborates in eco-experiments to improve the oceans…
MourjA n M A r I nA s is a Dubai-based company leading the maritime sector in the Middle East, and a Marina Industry Association member. Owned by Qatari company Ghanim Bin Saad Al Saad and Sons Holdings (GSSG), Mourjan Marinas is developing an unchallenged position of prominence internationally, with a marina portfolio stretching across the Middle East, including Almouj Marina in Al Mouj Muscat, Oman, Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City and Mourjan Marinas – Four Seasons in Doha, Qatar.
Mourjan means ‘coral’ in Arabic. It reflects the importance of the marine environment and signifies Mourjan Marinas’ commitment to the Middle East environment and marine nature. Mourjan Marinas runs its ‘Mourjan Moments’ initiative to create memorable experiences for boaters and visitors by surprising them with unexpected treats.
The light-hearted initiative has been rolled out across all of Mourjan Marinas destinations, in which boaters and members of the community enjoy during the weekends different complimentary treats like fresh fruits, popcorn, sweets, candies, coffee/tea, cold water and chilled towels.
Among numerous accolades, in 2014 Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City in Qatar and Almouj Marina in the Sultanate of Oman were each awarded a regional-first marine industry international achievement award with the Clean Marina accreditation. In addition, there are several eco-experiments going on at Mourjan Marinas facilities, which are a testament to the quality levels of their water.
mourjan marInaS – luSaIl CITY
Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City is home to a first-of-its-kind experiment to investigate the use of floating mangroves for ‘carbon sequestration’ – the capturing of carbon emissions. The experiment launched in 2012, and it is a joint initiative between the UNESCO Doha Office, Mourjan Marinas and Lusail Real Estate Development Company.
The results of this pioneering experiment will help shape understanding on mitigating climate change, as scientists will discover if the floating mangroves have the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing atmospheric carbon levels. The experiment has received widespread attention, and recently Qatar TV visited the marina to cover the experiment.
Providing a unique and picturesque space for a range of events, the marina features three onwater lounge areas with contemporary shade structures, designed and built as the perfect setting for hosting fashion shows, launch events, photo shoots, cocktail parties and team-building days away from the office. With a wide range of activities provided by its Commercial Operators including charter, dhow and fishing trips, wake boarding, jet skiing, jet packing, hover boarding, kite surfing, water skiing and kayaking, and Doha Golf Club and Qatar Shooting & Archery just a short drive away, there are great opportunities to tie in a more active dimension to corporate events.

Almouj Marina at Al Mouj Muscat recently announced a set of successful results in its landmark Oyster Long-lines Ecoexperiment. The project, the first of its kind in the Middle East, has successfully introduced oyster long-lines to Almouj Marina and grown viable sized oysters in just six months. The success of Almouj Marina’s eco-experiment could have a huge impact on the world’s oyster industry, which has experienced a rapid decline in the oyster population over the last decade.
Other environmental activities undertaken include a beach clean-up campaign on the Daymaniyat Islands and a coral reef cleanup initative, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, and an anti-biofouling experiment conducted by researchers from Sultan Qaboos University in a unique project to develop technologically enhanced, nontoxic coatings to be used on submerged marine craft and equipment.
Almouj Marina is a magnet for high-profile international events such as the EFG Sailing Arabia, the Extreme Sailing Series, the prestigious Gulf Craft Show and, for the first time, the Louis Vuitton Americas Cup World Series.
It has also successfully partnered with a select range of businesses and local SMEs to offer an extraordinary range of leisure activities, from diving, snorkelling and private charters to wakeboarding, waterskiing and jet-skiing. Recently the marina cooperated with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to exclusively pilot the new PADI Dive Guide Programme. marina co-operated with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to exclusively pilot the new PADI Dive Guide Programme.

Amr Ala Abdul-Majeed is a Jordanian communication and electronics engineer living and working in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. However, his passion is diving on the weekends, teaching underwater photography, and even reviewing underwater photography equipment for international websites.
The Yellow Frogfish (below) is an extremely rare find in Saudi’s waters!
How did you get into diving and ocean photography?
I have a passion for the sea and like watching underwater documentaries, and by coincidence one of my friends was a diver and introduced me to an instructor in 2009. I started my open water course and I was lucky that my instructor was interested in underwater environment and photography. By the end of 2010 I finished my PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Digital Underwater Photography Instructor certificates.
Which is your favourite spot to dive in?
There are many spots in Jeddah which I like to dive in, but mostly I like Ann Ann Wreck and Chicken Wreck as boat dives and Bahadur Resort as a shore dive. In Saudi Arabia I dove in Yanbu in several dive sites and it was a great spot for diving and photography. I’ve been diving once internationally, last May 2015 to Indonesia: Raja Ampat for 10 days and Lembeh for 7 days. It was a great trip
I am planning more diving trips in several destinations.
Can you tell us about an experience which stands out in your memory?
In Jeddah finding macro subjects is quite challenging, especially when you dive in a resort with lots of trainee divers. Frogfish are rare, and usually a dark colour. I found frogfish in that resort 2-3 times. One day we did four dives searching for a frogfish and during the fourth dive I spotted a strange yellow colour under a rock and once I came near it was a Yellow Frogfish. I was really excited to find that colour of frogfish in Jeddah!
What advice do you have for anyone who is interested in the ocean?
The Ocean is an amazing kingdom so if you’re interested in that kingdom it’s a must to be respectful and to take care of it by avoiding doing damage to the corals, provoking marine life and throwing trash in the ocean. For photographers they must work hard and keep seeking new information and techniques if they want to master underwater photography.
What would you like to accomplish in the field of ocean photography?
I would like to make an Arabic Encyclopedia about marine life, or at least to be part of it.

These splendid travel accessories from TUMI’s 2016 Collection are geared towards the traveller with an eye for quality and style. With influences from the Mediterranean, these are the pieces you want to be seen with when island-hopping around the Adriatic...
TuMI travels to the exotic Mediterranean for Spring 2016, a region with a tradition steeped in artisanry and refined architecture. This bustling and beautiful central highway of transport inspires an assortment of travel and lifestyle accessories for the Global Citizen, with a rich seasonal colour palette of vibrant colours including Moroccan Blue, Cayenne, Stone and Gold.
“The rich and energetic colour palette evokes the Old World charm of the region, while the seasonal geometric and hexagonal prints are reminiscent of the Moorish form of architectural ornamented vaulting,” explains TUMI’s Creative Director Michael Petry.
New seasonal geometric and hexagonal prints are inspired by the muqarnas, a Moorish form of architectural ornamented vaulting also known as “honeycomb vaults.” The pairing of strong neutrals such as Blue, Cream and Tan with this geometric outline creates a marriage of engineering and craftsmanship across Alpha Bravo, Chambers, Sinclair and Vapor Lite assortments.
The appeal of TUMI products lies in their excellent quality and design, says Michael. “Our product is known for its meticulous craftsmanship, functional superiority, and design excellence, which is why TUMI is the leading international business, accessory and global travel lifestyle brand. As a brand, we perfect our customers’ journeys, both literally and figuratively, offering a full assortment of lifestyle products, which include collections for women, men, business and travel. These pieces are becoming more than “just a bag” to transport personal belongings from Point A to Point B; they are becoming an extension of people’s individual, day-to-day journeys,” he explains.

Georgie Bradley knows a thing or two about her native Greece – especially Kavala and Thassos – two gems off the beaten path that are the best kept secret in the entire Mediterranean
Wh E n you think of the picture-perfect Greek islands with whitewashed villages and those intensely blue doors you’re probably thinking of the islands in southern Greece. The Cyclades – the most frequented and popular – have a glowing rep – always have, always will. The teal tint of the Aegean, the sunsets that attract artists from the world over and the charming village life make it a justifiable travel rite.
But while the south basks in the glory, there’s the northern regions of Greece, sat on important history, where the present is inseparably bound up in the past, which deserves some light too.
Kavala is my hometown. The place I was born but never lived in. It’s been my summer destination for 25 years – the duration for each visit has thinned down since those liberal three-month university holidays came to an end – and its untapped, remote beauty still leaves me awe-struck.
One of the most prominent features is Kavala’s aqueduct – a thorough structure punctuating the heart of the city – which was initially a Byzantine barrier wall built in the 14th century and then later functioned as an aqueduct during the Ottoman reign. Suleiman’s rule is present in the old town’s architecture and main square of Mohammed Ali – a place I always take visitors to for its deep coloured houses and vintage feel. The entire old town is amphitheatrically built, so it takes some lungpower to traipse it but when you reach Panagia (Virgin Mary) church you get the most panoramic views of the city. Kavala can have an overwhelming denseness to it as the buildings stack up tightly but the locals are so friendly you look past it and appreciate the warmth of the people.
Being a principal seaport in eastern Macedonia means Kavala sees considerable traffic in its harbour. It’s the focal point for commercial and recreational activity and where I get the ferryboat to the opposite island of Thassos in just under an hour.
Thassos is a speck of paradise, not blighted by mass tourism, full of foliage and is green, very green. Unlike its southern counterparts, Thassos is wild with nature –pine trees outline the entire island including
Despite being quite dense and populated, Kavala is a friendly and welcoming town steeped in history.
the many secret bays. The waters are more than postcard blue – they are swimming pool clear and bluer than blue. I once did a day-long boat tour of the island where we anchored into several bays as we necked around and jumped from the boat, full of gusto and happiness.
Along the main towns of Limenas and Prinos you’ll find a string of tavernas serving up local dishes including my fail-safe order, chargrilled Octopus, doused in olive oil, sprinkled in oregano, perfection. Thassos has its own Panagia pilgrimage, built into the side of the mountain, giving you dreamy views. One thing I remember from my childhood is the ice-cold drinking water from the natural springs. What’s even more quaint is how the water runs down alongside the narrow streets – I used to follow the route and splash along the way past the dainty houses with tiny doors. Being sparsely populated, home to breathtaking beaches and peacefully quiet means you’ll find the idyll you’ve always dreamt of in an island.

Seafood Paella
Chef David Barrachina of El Faro, the Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s popular Spanish restaurant, gives us his recipe for a Spanish classic, the seafood paella.
Ingredients
500g Bomba rice
400g Fresh vegetables and garlic cloves
2L Fish stock
600g Large squid/cuttlefish
500g Baked capsicum red
300g Fresh tomato purée
14ml Olive oil
5g Pure saffron
400g Mussels
300g Frozen scallops
1.2kg Frozen lobster
700g Prawns
400g Hammour
Directions:
Gently heat the oil in the pan and then add the pieces of cuttlefish/ squid. Cook for 2-3 minutes over low heat and make a well in the center to add the tomato purée. Mix the ingredients and sauté over a low heat, and then add three quarters of the chopped garlic. Continue sautéing over low heat, add the paprika and rice, and fry for roughly a minute, finally adding the saffron. Pour the boiling fish broth into the pan and bring to boil.
Depending on the rice variety, paella cooks for 5 minutes over a high heat. Once the stock has almost boiled off, it’s time to go quickly by placing the pieces of precooked seafood, red peppers and finally the mussels, arranging the items to look aesthetically pleasing.
Warning: if you leave the precooked items under extreme heat for too long they will become too soft
Ferrari 488 G tb
The Ferrari 458 Italia was a wild success, by all accounts, being hailed by many as the most complete car Ferrari had ever built. As a result, Ferrari had set themselves a pretty tough benchmark to top with a successor to their glorious V8. And yet, perhaps unsurprisingly, they’ve risen to the challenge with the 488 GTB.
They haven’t done it in outrageous fashion; they’ve just improved on “perfection”, making the 488 GTB that little bit better in every single way.
Take the exterior styling, for starters. It’s very similar to the 458 – from a distance, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the two. On closer inspection, however, the differences are abundant. On the 488 there are more vents, more scoops, and more extreme angles and lines all around, most notably on the bonnet and rear haunches – it just looks leaner, meaner, and more ready for business than the 458. They’re not just aesthetic either, as some are there to feed the turbos on the new V8 that replaces the 458’s naturallyaspirated powerplant.
Which brings us nicely to perhaps the most revolutionary aspect of the 488 GTB, the new 3.8 litre twin-turbocharged V8, derived from the same engine as in the Ferrari California T, only beefed up to produce 670PS and 760NM of torque. Though the same beating heart drives these two beasts, it is instantly clear that the two cars are entirely different products. The California T is a luxury GT – fast, but with a big emphasis placed on comfort.
The 488 GTB is a sports car through and through, and therefore more extreme in every sense, from the radical exterior styling to the comparatively spartan and functional interior. There are fewer places to stash things like maps and drinks, and surfaces are massively reduced inside, in the spirit of weight reduction, and what surfaces there are generally

We take a drive in Ferrari’s successor to the 458 Italia, the gloriously styled and blisteringly fast Ferrari 488 GTB – some days in the office are just that much better than others…
The 488 GTB boasts a more powerful version of Ferrari’s new turbo-charged V8 also seen in the California
comprise of carbon fibre, and are utilised for the car’s functions. That’s not to say it isn’t uncomfortable – under normal driving conditions the 488 GTB is pliant and smooth, and pleasant to pootle around town in. It also boasts the expected creature comforts, such as a stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, aircon, and cruise control.
However, given the lack of storage (especially with the spare tyre under the bonnet), only the most dedicated speed junkie would take this car cross-continent.
However, if do you take the drive to one of those legendary remote, winding mountain roads with minimal traffic, what are you in for? Well, you’re in for an experience that is about as sublime as you could imagine – transcendental even.
The steering is close to perfection, the response sharp and instantaneous, and you can feel the feedback from the front wheels like you’re hard-wired into them.
Response from the accelerator is equally as instant, with a ferocity to the pickup that will leave you breathless. The new engine will propel the 488 to 100m/h in three seconds, and on to 200km/h in 8.3 seconds. Peak torque is delivered at just 3000rpm, so when you put your foot down those twin-scroll turbos kick in without any noticeable lag to propel you forward like a drop kick between the shoulder blades.
If the 458 made you feel like a hero, the 488 GTB makes you feel like a demigod, with 670PS of thunder at your beck and call, and completely under your control. The balance and finesse of the chassis begs to be pushed harder, and even if you overcook it, a slight correction brings things back in check, with nothing but an increased heart rate and a surge of adrenaline to show for your hairy moment.
The 488 GTB embodies all that is Ferrari, and has improved on the near-perfection of the 458 to produce something that is truly spectacular.

Breitling Super ocean
There are water-resistant watches, there are waterproof watches, and then there is Breitling’s Superocean series, which represents the absolute pinnacle of diving watch technology.
BrEITlIng is one of the world’s most renowned Swiss watchmakers, and one of the last remaining independent Swiss watch brands. It has been privately owned since it was founded in 1884, and to this day still designs and builds all its movements in-house.
Since its founding, many famous sailors, explorers, divers and even astronauts have made Breitling their timepiece of choice. Astronaut Scott Carpenter was famously pictured wearing a Breitling Cosmonaute inside the Aurora 7 spacecraft in 1962.
Celebrities that have been known to sport Breitling watches include Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise and John Travolta (all known aviators), as well as Brad Pitt, David Beckham and Leonardo DiCaprio.
As watch technology has developed into electronic devices that are generally more accurate than mechanical ones, Breitling’s quality has ensured that it remains one of the world’s leading watch brands. All of Breitling’s watches are fitted with certified chronometers, making them as accurate as a mechanical watch can possibly be. The certification comes from the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, or the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute, in English (or COSC), which is considered the world’s benchmark in incredibly accurate mechanical movements. This accuracy, when combined with the prestige of the Breitling brand, is the reason why they’re still the choice of many celebrated aviators and divers despite more accurate electronic devices being available.
The Superocean M2000 is the world’s only chronograph to be fully functional at a depth of 2000M.
Although originally becoming famous for making aviators’ watches, Breitling decided to apply their unique expertise to creating high precision instruments for ocean explorers too, with the Transocean series for sailors, and the Superocean series for divers.
Since launching the Superocean in 1957, Breitling has consistently optimized it on both technical and functional levels – the goal being to accompany professional and military divers, as well as recreational diving enthusiasts, on their underwater adventures around the world.
One of their latest creations, the Superocean M2000 Blacksteel represents some of the most sophisticated technology the brand has ever included in a timepiece.
Superocean m2000 Chronograph Blacksteel
The world’s only chronograph to be water-resistant and fully functional at a depth of 2,000 meters (6,600ft), the Superocean Chronograph M2000 plunges into the abyss in an entirely black-clad limited series sporting a powerful technical look entirely on a par with its performance.
The Superocean Chronograph M2000 is equipped with an exclusive magnetic pushpiece system. This patented device enables the chronograph controls to be handled via the metal of the case, making this model the world’s only chronograph to be water-resistant and entirely functional to a depth of 2,000 meters (6,600ft), without any risk of water seeping in.
Already available in a polished steel version, the Superocean Chronograph M2000 now appears in a 250-piece limited series featuring a satin-brushed steel case with a black colour achieved by a high-resistance carbon-based treatment. The matching dial ensures optimal readability with oversized hands and hour-markers accentuated by a luminescent coating. The black rubber-moulded unidirectional ratcheted rotating bezel guarantees an excellent grip. The sturdy case, equipped with a built-in decompression valve to vent helium, is fitted with a 4mm-thick glare-proofed sapphire crystal. The SuperQuartz movement, chronometer, certified by the COSC, ensures a degree of precision ten times higher than that of ordinary quartz. The Superocean Chronograph M2000 Blacksteel is equipped with an exclusive whiteedged black leather strap, and is a true champion shining in the utter darkness of the ocean depths.

hubLot mp-05 LaFerrari
Inspired by the famous hybrid hypercar, the MP-05 “LaFerrari” represents a very special series, entirely designed and developed by the Hublot design workshop. Boasting a record 50-day power reserve, the watch is finely wrought from black PVD titanium, and topped by a titanium and carbon insert in its centre, revealing the winding crown. In the movement, the hour and minute are displayed to the right of the barrels, also indicated by means of one anodised black aluminium cylinder each. Reinforcing bars either side, made from anodised red aluminium, bring to mind Ferrari’s red signature.
The extreme ruggedness of the Leica X-U makes it the perfect companion on any outdoor project or journey. As a shockproof, dust and water sealed expedition camera, its minimised and intuitive handling guarantees you ultimate creative freedom. The large APS-C format CMOS sensor boasts a high resolution of over 16MP, and guarantees extraordinary brilliance, natural colour rendition, and exceptional resolution of the finest details, even in low light. The camera also records full HD video in a choice of 1920x1080 or 1280x720pixel resolution at 30 full frames per second in MP4 video format.
SubmerSibleS
A unique and versatile open-seat submersible, these underwater crafts boast a wide range of applications in the leisure, industrial and military sectors.
orTEgA is currently in the process of showcasing its innovative open-seat submersible, which is available in either a one, two or three-seat configuration. They were inspired by the “Sleeping Beauty”, a motorised submersible canoe built by the British Special Operations Executive during World War II as an underwater vehicle for a single frogman to perform clandestine reconnaissance or attacks against enemy vessels.
Now, working in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Navy, Ortega Submersibles has resurrected and redefined a historically revolutionary vessel using highly advanced naval technology.
The single-seater Mk. 1A is actually the first working prototype, and is currently in final testing stages now. It’s especially made for the offshore industry, but is also available for private leisure use as well. It is a fast, one-person submersible built for treasure hunting, archaeological research and other underwater adventures.
It can be outfitted with many options like built in spotlights, 3D sonar and special BlueHeat heated undergarments for extra long submersed operations.
The Mk. 1A was built with a small footprint in mind – it can be carried by just two people, and a total number of six Mk. 1A’s can easily be fitted in a 20ft container with room to spare.
The Mk. 1B is a two-seater sub suited for exploration, research and port security.
The second operator is also able to operate the boat, or alternatively control a remotely operated underwater vehicle connected to the sub.
The three-seat configuration, the Mk. 1C, is the one that was specifically requested for development by the Royal Dutch Navy for their Special Forces. It is designed to be an undetectable submersible capable of

delivering operatives and their equipment safely and comfortably to their operation from an overthe-horizon drop-off point. It’s intended for fast long-range travel either on or under the surface, with the ability to go up river streams. The Mk. 1C is also compatible with Low Altitude Parachute Extraction Systems, underwater submarine launches or just under slung from a helicopter.
Powered by two high-power electric motors and fully equipped with a trimming tank, on-board breathing apparatus and HUD navigation system, each vessel can also have Magnetometers, Sonar, FLIR, extra air supply (closed loop rebreathers) or an extended cargo hold of up to 450 litres. All the on-board equipment supports dive depths of up to 95m/310ft, and their honeycomb structures are filled with air for buoyancy.
Can you take one home now? Well… no, they haven’t actually gone into production yet. However, they are in the final prototype testing stage, and they are taking orders with deliveries expected in the first months of this year, so if you want one, get in touch with them through their website, www.ortega-submersibles.com.
These submersibles were created in cooperation with the Dutch Special Forces.
