t’s November, which means only one thing; it’s time to let that moustache grow! Become a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista today and help raise awareness of prostate cancer all over the globe (p20). Keeping on the charitable path, FACT is doing a winter drive to help the community of labourers in Bahrain, find out how you can get involved on p30. Money matters, right? And we’ve all been there; it’s the weekend and all you want to do is something exciting, or relaxing, or fun, with a group of friends. But, pay day has come and gone too soon, and the next injection of cash seems a light year away. Fear not, FACT has got your back! Turn to our lead feature, ‘Bahrain on a Budget’

and be rid of boredom as well as your money woes. There’s everything from must-visit historical sites, art galleries and museums, places to find good food at great prices, and a ton of activities you can do for free or as little as BD5. Moving away from money talk, next on the agenda is the number one conversation starter - the weather! Finally after months of stifling humidity and soaring temperatures, we can venture outside and leave behind the comfort of the air conditioning we sought solace in. Our fashion round-up (p74-75) will inspire

“I prefer a night in, okay?” Since when did I get so old? Cara’s Rant of the Month

There comes a time in every young adults life when they will utter the words ‘I prefer a night in’. For me, this happened last week. You’d think, having just moved to Bahrain, where a good party is the hottest ticket to fun in town, I’d want to be out at every opportunity, right? But I’ve recently found myself getting home and being content catching up on my TV shows (OSN and MBC have my attention most days!), whilst getting a little creative in the kitchen. I thought this was supposed to happen in your mid 30’s, not at the tender age of 23? Don’t get me wrong, I like to go out and party like the best of them, but it’s more like once a month than once every 24 hours. But you know what the worst part of all this is? I actually like staying in. Yes, I said it; I like getting home and being comfy on the couch, or making a mushroom and leek risotto – what’s so wrong with that? I’ve had my heyday and I’m perfectly happy to settle down a little. So to all my fellow stay-at-homers (and I know you’re out there!), don’t be ashamed, embrace your need for warm slippers and good TV – just remember to show face occasionally so that the world knows you haven’t completely lost sense of your youth.

‘Tache Up for Movember

WIN October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month but November is dedicated to the Mo’ and to raise awareness of prostate cancer all over the globe. Here in Bahrain you can get involved too – let’s get thousands of moustaches to take over the island for this great cause! It’s simple. All Mo Bros sign up at Movember.com and then on November 1st, with a clean-shaven face, you begin to grow your Mo and continue to grow it for the full 30 days of the month. For donating their face, Mo Bros can ask their friends and family to sponsor their efforts in a bid to raise as much money as possible. And if you’re a woman who wants to get involved? No worries, you can become a Mo Sista. Mo Sistas are just as vital as Mo Bros, as they can also spread the word via word of mouth and social media. They can also sign up and get friends and family to donate – essentially they perform the same role as Bros but without having to have a Mo! So grow your Mo and spread the word to help men across the globe! 20. fact magazine

Diamonds are Forever Forget your costume trinkets, Jewellery Arabia is bringing diamonds, gold and fine antiques to the Pearl of The Gulf.

The saying goes ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ but it isn’t just the diamonds that you’ll be cosying up to at this year’s Jewellery Arabia event. Everything from luxury watches, precious stones and mountains of gold gems will be at your disposal in a huge five-day showcase, as the exhibition returns to Bahrain from November 19 to 23 at the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre. Despite the impressive range at previous Jewellery Arabia events, this year is going to be big, with some of the world’s finest jewellery from over 600 exhibitors on display. Demand from exhibitors is also huge. Event director Fawzi Al Shehabi said, “We have an extensive waiting list of companies who have requested space. We are considering constructing an additional temporary hall to meet demand and further increase the show’s size, whilst providing

space for even more quality exhibits for visitors to choose from.” As well as returning exhibitors such as Chopard, David Morris and Gaspari, there are also many new and exciting additions, including Bulgari and multi-national celebrity jeweller Mouawad. Fawzi believes that this influx of new designers and exhibitors, as well as the exclusive pieces on show, has given the event an appealing edge. He added, “We are looking forward in all confidence to yet another outstanding event.” As well as getting to showcase their creations, exhibitors will also battle it out in the Middle East Watches, Jewellery and Pen Awards, which will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Spa on November 19. If you need some inspiration for your imaginary jewellery closet, then make sure to check this out!

Jewellery Arabia will run from November 19 to 23 at Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre. Visit www.jewelleryarabia. com for more information.

Bahrain Music Conference Q&A DJ and.id FACT caught up with Greek DJ And.id to talk about his involvement in the exciting RedBull Music Academy Club Night as part of the Bahrain Music Conference…

How did your journey into music begin? I got into music when I was a kid. My father used to take me every Saturday morning to the local record store with him. After a while I asked my father to enroll me onto music courses. I studied the keyboard and after a while I switched to trumpet. When I was able to play melodies, I recorded songs from my father’s records to cassettes and played on top of them with my instruments. I bought my first computer and found out that I could use it for making beats and recording my own songs. Having discovered this passion at an early age, what was it that drove you to make the music you’re now known for? All my friends were into electronic music at that time. Internet wasn’t popular and the only way to find our favorite music was going to record stores and buying records or mix tapes. When I exposed myself to a huge variety of electronic music, house/techno music was the one that caught my attention. You’ve had great success in your homeland, but describe the experience when you took part in RedBull Music Academy 2003 in Cape Town? It was a unique and very inspiring experience for me. I have met a lot of artists from around the globe and spent some days in the studio with them learning new things, gaining knowledge and expanding my musical horizons. 26. fact magazine

You’re now teaming up with RBMA in Bahrain, how does it feel to be back with them? I feel honored to be invited by RBMA. I am looking forward to meet new people and artists in Bahrain and share the knowledge. You’re also a lecturer with RBMA. What advice would you give to aspiring musicians? You need to focus and work hard until you achieve your goals. Try to be innovative, learning new things and do not copy. GO: RedBull Music Academy Club Night takes place on November 1 in Adliya.

When it comes to music, the people of Bahrain have the talent, passion and genuine interest. Born out of the need for something new and different, the Bahrain Music Conference is in town. It’s the first time anything like it has been on the island and it’s sure going to be something special. BMC takes live music, bona fide artists, workshops and local and regional budding talent, mashing everything together to create something unique! If you want to learn a few tricks of the trade, or simply enjoy some good music, then make sure you get down there and show your appreciation! GO: BMC takes over Adliya from 31 October to 2 November. Art in Resolution

From Britain to Bahrain, artist Adam Ball is showcasing a new body of work at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art – his first solo exhibition on the island.

Photography First For Bahrain

How many of you like to be amateur photographers when you’re on a plane? We certainly do! There’s nothing more breathtaking than being thousands of feet in the air, with the thick white clouds above and miles of blue ocean below, right? For one man, this serene setting paid off to be captured on camera, as a big congratulations goes out to Sandeep Ahlawat, who has become the first ever person from Bahrain to win big in the 2013 Emirates Skywards Future Artists competition. His stunning photograph described as “A bonding of two levels from an ordinary to extraordinary depth”, scooped a $5000 award in the ‘Deeper Insight’ category, and you’ll be surprised to know that this wasn’t the doing of professional photography, but a leisurely snap of a sea view from an aeroplane. Overjoyed at his win, Sandeep says: ““Emirates skywards has given wings to my passion - photography - and inspiration to fly high and perceive the world through a lens. It has given me immense confidence to transform my creative skills of art direction to a new level of creativity.” Sandeep’s photo, along with three other winning pics, will feature as designs on Emirates’ 2014 skywards membership cards, helping to launch their talent on the worldwide stage. Congratulations Sandeep!

Where art is concerned, the most striking element of any artist’s work is the inspiration, concept or theme. And ‘Resolution’ by Adam Ball is no exception. Curated by international art advisor Filippo TattoniMarcozzi, this collection of work features a variety of mediums that everyone can appreciate, including the use of handcrafted paper cutouts, large-scale paintings, minimal white-layered paper pieces and a mural painted directly onto the gallery walls, taken from the artist’s DNA (now that’s something you’ll want to see!). Adam’s vision is to echo the hidden order and transient disposition of nature through microbiological elements layered against a diverse range of images, contrasting the micro and macro, biological and electrical, and molecular and galactic. He brings an intricate and meticulous collection of work, portraying the beauty and fragility of nature. If you appreciate thought-provoking and imaginative art, head over to see ‘Resolution’ – it won’t disappoint. GO: Resolution is on now until December 31, daily from 10am – 6pm at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art. Tel: 1723 0123.

Spotlight on Bahraini Female Artists

Celebrating and supporting the female talent on the island, Nadine Gallery’s Annual Exhibition for Bahraini Female Artists will take place later this month. This exciting event has become a highlight in the calendar, backed with great enthusiasm from local supporters of the arts. From art fans, to industry insiders, curators, collectors and artists, this is an exhibition for everyone! WINTER DRIVE

Be A HELPING HAND THIS WINTER Helping Hands is a small organisation of a close group of women who dedicate their time to improving the lives of the labourers in Bahrain. We met with Gita Krishnan at a two-storey building that is home to around 50 workers. She tells us that her mission is to show that labourers are more than just the “invisible people who make the high rises”. Many arrive in Bahrain from countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Philippines, in the hopes of being able to provide financial support to their families in their homeland. Though the reality is often bleak, as we witnessed poor living conditions and lack of every day needs; with 6-8 people sharing rooms lined with fragile bunk beds, a kitchen where appliances were falling to pieces or broken, and a sheltered spot with a tap on the wall, masquerading as a shower area. Despite these grim circumstances, the men living here were nothing but smiles. One worker from Bangladesh, who has been in Bahrain for over a decade, says; “I like it here because in my country there are no opportunities for work.” He also informed

FACT is running a Winter Drive for the month of November, with the great team at Helping Hands, to collect items that can be passed onto a new home where they are truly needed… us that his employer provides the staff with a return ticket home every two years, something which he is “really grateful” for. It came as a bit of a shock to see, firsthand, the situation in which some people on the island are living, and we thought it only right that FACT and our readers step up and lend a helping hand. What is FACT doing to help? We’re calling out to our readers, clients and anyone who wants to get involved. FACT

aims to collect much-needed items to pass on to the labour camps where it’s needed most. How can you get involved? Have you got any blankets, jackets, shoes, or other items to fight off the cold this winter, that you no longer need? As long as they’re in good and usable condition we are happy to take them off your hands for a home where they’ll be appreciated once more. Where do I take the items I want to donate? Please bring all items you wish to donate to the FACT office in Seef. Find our full address on www.fact-magazine.com/bh. What will happen with the items collected? At the end of the month, the FACT team will visit a number of different labour camps with the Helping Hands team to deliver all the generously donated items. “Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.”

Four Times The Laughs! Happy Birthday Chuckle Club! To celebrate its 1st anniversary this November the comedy event is bringing together four of its favourite funny performers, from the past year, for a dose of big laughs and award-winning humour! Here’s the line-up…

Jojo Smith

Dan Nightingale

Described as ‘unstoppable’ by The Independent, Dan Nightingale is one of the best in stand-up and he’s returning to Bahrain to give us a taste of his original, playful and intelligent comedy. He started right out of university, doing gigs at his local comedy club and his career catapulted from there. He performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and gained huge success, which led to his debut solo show ‘Geronimo’ in 2008. Critics have praised his brand of honest and unpredictable comedy, applauding his blowaway performances, and fans flock to get a piece of his witty comedy. Having played some of the biggest comedy venues, Dan has been busy writing material for his third solo show – some of which we hope to see when he returns to Bahrain this month!

32. fact magazine

Repping it for the funny females out there, Jojo Smith never intended to become a comedienne, but we sure are glad she did! Her cheeky, raunchy style of comedy has seen her go from strength to strength in the industry. Jojo began her career as a journalist, and it wasn’t until she started her chat show, Funny Business, that she realised comedy was her way forward! Having interviewed some of the biggest comedians, she decided to take on the world of laughter for herself, a move that has proven to be very fruitful! Now, Jojo is accustomed to playing for crowds of thousands and has gone on to play all around the world, from Europe to Abu Dhabi, and here in Bahrain. We’re incredibly excited to get another dose of her ‘in your face’ comedy!

Martin Mór

Mark Dolan

Most of you will know Mark Dolan as the Channel 4 funny man who has gone far and wide to dedicate himself to comedy. He’s done things many comedians would avoid in order to bring us his hilarious and super sharp jokes, including hosting the TV show The World’s… and Me which saw him meet the tallest, smallest, and hairiest people as well as the woman with the World’s largest breasts – all in the name of comedy! He was also the presenter of the hilarious hidden camera show ‘Balls of Steel’, which was so successful that it launched around the world. After becoming a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and constantly receiving great reviews, he’s back in Bahrain to give us a good bout of the funny stuff – get ready for belly laughs!

This Irish comedian has a pretty colourful past, no doubt contributing to his brilliant comedy. Martin was originally a circus performer – entertaining people was always in his blood – but decided to entertain in a different way and turned to comedy. The rest, as they say, is history. He is just as popular for his incredible beard as is hilarious comedy. He’s performed for members of the British Royal Family, and has gained the respect of the public and other comics alike (possibly his toughest critics). He’s been the choice support act for comedians such as Frankie Boyle, Jack Dee and Lee Evans, and his comedy has taken Martin all over the world. Don’t miss out on your chance to see this favoured comic, he might even throw in a few circus tricks!

GO: November 6 at the Rugby Club, November 7 at the British Club, and November 8 at InterContinental Regency. For tickets call 3666 3509.

FACT was invited onboard Etihad Airways’ inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi to Ho Chi Minh City, a new route launched ahead of the airline turning a decade old. Here, Shabana Adam runs down the best of this unforgettable short trip and why you should consider a visit to one of Vietnam’s most fascinating cities...

Taxis run on the metre and are relatively cheap. Your hotel can call you a licensed cabbie and you can even agree on a set rate to have the same driver for the day.

On Foot A true culture fix means setting off on foot around HCMC. All you need is some basic Vietnamese phrases and a sense of adventure to get you going.

Vespa Want to whizz by city life? The roads of HCMC are packed with motorbikes, and one of the best (and exciting!) ways to explore the city is on a vespa tour, best booked before arrival.

FACT meets world-renowned chef, Luke Nguyen, the man behind Etihad Airways’ Vietnamese-style onboard menu, especially designed for passengers flying on the Ho Chi Minh route...

He opened his first restaurant, Red Lantern, aged just 23, and has since gone on to produce numerous food shows about his beloved homeland, Vietnam. Now, the award-winning chef is a newly-assigned Etihad Guest Ambassador. Raised in Australia, he’s bringing a taste of his native roots to passengers on the Abu Dhabi to Ho Chi Minh route. “I believe that food is, of course, delicious, but it’s not just about that, it’s about culture and everything I cook, every dish I make, has a story,” Chef Luke says. “It’s a great honour to be able to showcase to the world what Vietnamese food and culture is like – and to 50. fact magazine

be able to do that with Etihad is fantastic.” The onboard menu, available on business class, includes a Vietnamese-inspired seafood mango salad and lemongrass and chilli chicken, among other recipes, all packed with fresh herbs and veggies. For Chef Luke, Vietnamese cuisine is a standout staple of South East Asian food due to its “natural, elegant and delicate” ingredients. “I like Vietnamese food because it’s so fresh,” he explains. “You see a lot of fresh herbs; a lot of meat, a lot of texture, and it’s very light. It’s got a lot of flavours, but it’s more toned down, vibrant and refined.” Etihad Airways is renowned for its service, safety and hospitality – and now the airline also has something akin to a Michelin-starred dining experience – that’s another box ticked for Etiihad, and for Chef Luke, who says, “For me to be involved in this doing my traditional Vietnamese food is absolutely fantastic.”

ARTS EXPO

Bahrain is once more buzzing with great artistic talents, and this month is no different. A new exhibition, titled ‘Sea’ which is now on at Bin Mattar House explores the legacy of pearl diving and its significance to GCC communities. Here, Shabana Adam meets Doha-based artist Hala Al Khalifa to find out more on her creative thought-process, her love of art from the Arab world and what inspires her work...

Some of the most talented and ambitious people likely discover their passion at a very young age; aspiring musicians will do karaoke at school; renowned athletes will take part in a sports club; and future movie stars may have had a role in the annual nativity play, well, the same can be said for artist Hala Al Khalifa. From a young age, her interest and intrigue with art is a relationship that was nurtured by her loved ones. “I consider myself very lucky that I have been raised in a household that valued Middle Eastern art,” Hala says. “My mother in particular nourished my young talent, and gave me the correct guidance and support, through art classes every weekend, and encouraging me to have my first art show at a very young age.” Thanks to this support, Hala was able to go on and produce artistic works, mainly paintings, becoming an artist in her own right. For her new exhibition at Bahrain’s Bin Mattar House, she takes inspiration from something close to home - the stunning waters that surround the GCC. This body of work, aptly titled ‘Sea’, is an exploration of the legacy of pearl diving, a dangerous yet rich activity that holds great significance for many Arabian Gulf families and communities as it provided them with a lifeline. “I have often been attracted to the dome shaped metal mesh that is a common site on the shores of Gulf,” Hala says. “It’s an old and clever device which is used to catch fish. Once a fish enters the mesh it’s trapped and there would be no way to escape. “The dome mesh or the fish trap takes another form in which a conceptual re-interpretation takes it to another level, becoming a metaphor of entrapment,” she explains. And it’s not just the concept and thought behind this showcase that deserves attention, Hala has also, interestingly, broadened her artistic techniques with this exhibition. “Most recently I diverted to video and installation art,” she tells. “I use whatever makes me comfortable while working on a specific theme.” One thing that is evident from talking to Hala is that she is a true advocate for Arab art and artists. When studying in Boston, USA, she found the experience to be an eye opener, not only because she got to discover art from around the world, but she was shocked that Middle Eastern art was not prominently discussed abroad. She says,

“I don’t search to be inspired, because when something engages ones thought it has a direct response, and it isn’t a planned situation.” Hala Al Khalifa

“I grew up in a house that only had Arab art on its wall, from artists in Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Egypt... I recognised important names and styles. I was sad that curriculums in University did nothing on arts of the Middle East, so as a tribute to that, any paper I was asked to write, I would select an artist from the Arab world to write about.” And that would include many an artist as Hala counts prolific names such as Ahmed Baqer, Abdulrahim Sherif, Rafi Al Nassari, Dia Azzawi and Mahmoud Obaidi as her mentors, guides, and influences. As well as these great artists, Hala’s inspiration comes from “various subjects in my life, whether it’s an experience I’m going through personally, or something I see on TV, or from a written piece,” she says. “I don’t search to be inspired, because when something engages ones thought it has a direct response, and it isn’t a planned situation.” Fo Hala, the most challenging aspect of being an artist is keeping the creative process and theme selection fresh and original. The best thing, she says, is being “in studio space, behind closed doors, writing, sketching and producing something true.” Just like in her childhood days when art was the thing that drew her attention and captured her heart, Hala tells us that the near future will be packed with “work, art, family, friendships, and appreciation of whatever life throws at me.” And we wish her nothing but the best of luck!

Hala Al Khalifa’s ‘Sea’ exhibition is on at Bin Mattar House, Muharraq until November 30.

CULTURE EXPO

Russia REVEALED: Textile exhibition If you’re into arts, fashion, or if you’re a history buff who likes to delve into the rich past of different cultures, you’ll want to go and take a look at the pieces on show as part of the Russian Textile: Printed Cotton from Traditional Patterns to Soviet Propaganda Design exhibition at Bahrain National Museum.

GO: The exhibition is on now and will run until December 8 in Hall 8 at Bahrain National Museum. 56. fact magazine

I

t’s an enriching display of 18th - 20th century textile designs, cotton fabric and wooden printing-blocks, alongside costumes from the 19th - early 20th centuries, all reminiscent of Russia’s past. The Russian Textile: Printed Cotton from Traditional Patterns to Soviet Propaganda Design exhibition looks at the independent artistic movements related to cotton printing and manufacturing that were present in the historical development of this period. Svetlana Israelova, the exhibitons curator, explains, “These items are showing the textile itself as a separate piece of art. When these textile and cotton factories first appeared, all the textiles were quite expensive. Only the rich and affluent could afford to buy them.” The printed cotton industry emerged in the late 18th century and was closely associated to hand block printing, which led to rapid development of the art form. It’s fast growth and exclusivity allowed for major cotton printing factories to emerge and produce for a mass consumer market - something that this exhibition captures perfectly. After becoming a competitor with Western Europe and Great Britain in the growing market, the success of the Russian printed textile was praised for original and unique designs. Svetlana believes differently. She says, “The fact is that Russian textile was very strongly influenced by oriental ornaments, and you can see this mixture of cultures - including influence from the Middle East and Eastern countries - in the pieces being showcased. This fusion of culture is something Svetlana hopes will draw people to the exhibition. “Textiles is an international language, everyone knows it, everyone has it,” she says. “What we would like to show is the contrast that before the revolution our cultures were connected and in these textiles.” Visitors are in luck as they will be privy to experiencing a whole array of different pieces: from the soviet propaganda textile to the oldest dresses on show (some of which date back to the 17th century), alongside several more refined reproductions.

Hajj: The Holy Muslim Pilgrimage

One of the most sacred journeys in the world, Hajj is a voyage every Muslim must embark on in their lifetime. This year, to celebrate the pilgrimage, Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art is bringing an exhibition dedicated to that very journey. One of the five pillars of Islam, the Hajj brings together the largest gathering of Muslims in a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca for a few sacred days. To celebrate this ancient tradition, the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar has launched “Hajj – The Journey Through Art”. Curated by Dr Mounia ChekhabAbudaya, MIA’s Curator of Manuscripts, and Cecile Bresc, former Curator of Coins, the exhibition is the first of its kind in the Muslim world. Aisha Al Khater, Director of MIA stressed the museum’s dedication to sharing the Arab culture to the world, “MIA is dedicated 58. fact magazine

to shedding light on our past to inspire future generations, and we believe the power of art is essential to bringing the story of our cultures to life. We have every confidence that this exhibition will do just that.” With artworks from MIA’s personal pieces as well as objects from Qatari collections, many of which have never before been shown in public, the exhibition offers audiences a local interpretation of the pilgrimage. The works on display are made up of 144 pieces representing the beauty of the ancient Islamic pilgrimage. The MIA has also added an art installation in its atrium by contemporary artist Idris Khan as well as an outdoor photography exhibition. The international photographers participating in the exhibition are Peter Sanders (Britain), Reem al-Faisal (Saudi Arabia), Kayuzoshi Nomachi ( Japan), Juliette Sawyers (Australia) and Khalifa Al-Obaidly (Qatar). The museum has also teamed up with Doha Film Institute (DFI) to present four Hajj-related films that reflect the themes of the exhibition. For art enthusiasts there will also be a full educational program that will include art and calligraphy workshops, special tours, and lectures by a number of experts. GO: “Hajj The Journey Through Art” will be running until 5 January 2014. For more information visit www.mia.org.qa

On the Record pop/rock

Direct Hits, By The Killers

A greatest hits album from The Killers? Are we really that old?! Despite this, it’s a seemingly good record, taking the best of the bands pop/rock punch and putting it all into one. There are two new songs on the album that, if you were a fan of their earlier releases, you won’t love, but if you stretch to buy the deluxe edition, you’ll benefit from a beautiful demo of Mr. Brightside, and a Calvin Harris remix of When You Were Young – a greatest hits album that’s definitely worth buying.

POP/ R&B

The 20/20 Experience By JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

We loved The 20/20 Experience when it was released earlier this year – in true Justin fashion, it had us on our feet whenever the tracks were on play. So, naturally, The 20/20 Experience 2 Of 2 held big expectations. When he released the first single Take Back The Night, all our expectations seemed to be met – it was a catchy song that managed to get right into your bones and make you move – but sadly, the rest of the album didn’t live up. On one hand there were some old skool Justin vibes, and on the other it all just seemed a little ‘try too hard’. There’s no denying that the production and vocals are strong, but this record lacks that special something. We’re sorry to say 2 Of 2 should have got the boot!

alternative rock

In A Perfect World, By Kodaline

It’s clear to see where Kodaline get their inspiration from, they’re part of the Coldplay generation and this is very much evident in their music. They have a way of hooking you into songs with meaningful lyrics and strong choruses. This is quite an uplifting album, with tracks such as Love Like This and High Hopes making quite the triumphant impression. A strong first album that’s already received plenty of praise.

Fully Booked CRIME FICTION

The Cuckoo’s Calling By ROBERT GALBRAITH

It’s understandable that J.K Rowling decided to use a pseudonym to release her first mystery novel, after all, there’s nothing worse than critics setting you up for a fall by creating a sky-high buzz. Fortunately, in the case of The Cuckoo’s Calling, the reviews were high and mighty way before the Harry Potter creator was revealed as the author behind this brilliant mystery. This story is about detective Cormoran Strike, who is barely scraping by after losing a leg in Afghanistan. He’s a private investigator who’s just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is now living in the office. Then comes along a suspense-filled case that plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers – can he resist the pleasure, enticement and seduction of this world?

There are three things necessary for a great biography: a compelling subject, accuracy, and engaging storytelling. This book has all three. Big Screen

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The second in The Hunger Games franchise is set to be another blockbuster

Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson Sam Claflin What’s It About: Katniss Everdeen and fellow tribute Peeta Mellark return home to District 12 after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games. They must now embark on a “Victor’s Tour” of all the districts, during which Katniss senses a rebellion brewing against President Snow and those who control the Capitol. As clashes begin, the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) are in preparation - a competition that could change Panem forever. Why It’s Worth Watching: Our advice: watch the trailer, NOW! In two and a half minutes the adrenalin rush, excitement and tension will have you counting down the days until the second installment of The Hunger Games hits the big screen. The first film was, no doubt, the most satisfying starter to a franchise that we’ve had in a long while. It’s strengths came in the form of a talent-driven cast and crew, something that is set to continue, if not peak, in Catching Fire. We also hope that, like its predecessor, this film will stay true to the pages of the book bringing to life the moral conflicts, cultural values and societal pressures that us everyday folk can relate to. On a lighter note, we’re definitely more concerned with the exceptional amount of eye candy on display, especially the Katniss-wooing Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) who seems to possess an innate gift for making time stand still (and that’s not a complaint). This is definitely THE November release to mark in your diary! 62. fact magazine

Thor: The Dark World

Director: Alan Taylor Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgard What’s It About: Number two in this Marvel comic series leads us to believe that this may just be the best filmic achievement for Marvel to date. Here we see Thor (Chris Hemsworth), somewhat of an underdog hero, embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet where he’ll be reunited with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and forced to save the world. Oh and did we mention that, hot off the Game of Thrones director’s chair is Alan Taylor, leading this film towards the big bucks.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom Director: Justin Chadwick Cast: Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Terry Pheto, Robert Hobbs

What’s It About: Ten-years-in-the-making, this is the film version chronicling the autobiography of Nelson Mandela. Any film that tries to take on a huge chunk of Nelson Mandela’s life carries an enormous burden of expectation, here, it certainly helps to have the charismatic and physically imposing Idris Elba in the lead role. We predict Oscar buzz with this one.

p2/2:

The Industry Revolution

The watch world has gone industrial and the SEVENFRIDAY P2/2 is leading the way.

PRICE: BD450 BUY: Bahrain@sevenfriday.com

When it comes to watches, they’re no longer just used for telling the time; they’re a statement, they’re a piece of engineering, and they’re an art form within themselves, so, it’s needless to say that investing in the perfect watch is a decision that can’t be made swiftly. When we heard about SEVENFRIDAY’s new model P2/2, we were intrigued. It looks incredible, blending raw technological-style design with the practicality of time telling. And from what we can see, it’s built to perfection too with multiple dials and cogs – rather like the old tower clocks – making it unlike many watches you’ll see on the high street today. 66. fact magazine

The reason for this engineered look is due to this watch being inspired by the industrial revolution. The stainless steel animation ring harks back to the heavy machinery of that time and combined with the mechanical looking watch face, it’s easy to see that the P2/2 is well executed. The delicate features, something that you wouldn’t normally term with such a strong, solid design, are what make this wrist-piece stand out; it brings a modern touch combined with a traditional design concept and influence. When it comes to how this creation works, it’s got some pretty complicated and intricate mechanisms going on under the hood. Aside from the hands and dials, there are discs thrown into the mix too. The dial alone comprises of five different

PROS: A tech-savvy fashion lover’s dream watch CONS: Little too busy for just telling the time

pieces with 11 applications – impressive stuff for a wrist-watch! We’ll be honest, if you like your watches to be simple, and easy to grab the time from a quick glance, then this isn’t the watch for you – it can feel like it’s trying to be too much all at once. But, if you like your watch to be an accessory, to push the boundaries of design, and to be the talk of the party, then you’re in for a treat. The P2/2 aspires to be elegant yet powerful, and sophisticated yet cool. This is something we’re confident it has achieved, in its own individual way.

The MINI

cooper COuntryman “The Countryman is the first compact crossover SUV released under the Mini brand... The first thing you need to know about the Mini Countryman is that it’s over 4 metres long! Which is another first for Mini...”

fact magazine .69

This car is unique as Mini’s main rivals are premium brands which don’t have a crossover in their range. Imagine a 5dr Mini around 10% bigger than the hatchback and you’ve probably just pictured the Countryman.

The most obvious benefit of the Countryman is the space. The tall roofline provides an abundance of headroom (even for a 6-footer like myself!) and there is plenty of room everywhere else too. The car retains the traditional Mini dashboard layout, with a HUGE centralised speedo just to remind you that despite the masses of space, you are still in a Mini.

70. fact magazine

Having enjoyed a considerable amount of success under the wing of BMW, the Mini brand has been growing ever since its resurgence. You can now have hatchbacks, convertibles, coupés and crossovers all with that historical badge on the front. So far, the majority have been lauded as good drivers’ cars, with direct steering, near-instant responses and an eager personality. The Countryman has various options in terms of drivetrain, offering both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged 1.6 four-cylinder engines and the option of Mini’s ALL4 four-wheel drive system. The model tested here is the Cooper which means naturally-aspirated engine and FWD. The first thing I noticed in every ‘new’ Mini I have driven is the steering. They go to great lengths to ensure that even with the addition of electric power steering, it still has that trademark weighty feel. It gives a confidence that is sorely lacking in many cars today; feeling reliable, rather than the vague, disconnected feel that so many EPAS-fitted cars suffer from. Another very welcome addition to this car is the armrest. This may sound somewhat strange, but I find that any car without an armrest is significantly less comfortable than one with; the effect is amplified in cars with automatic gearboxes as your right hand has no job to do. Like I said, a strange thing to note but an important one in my humble opinion. By comparison with the Mini hatchback, the Countryman has a far superior ride quality; it does tramline somewhat thanks to the wide tyres, but the overall ride comfort is much better and makes the car a more pleasant daily driver.

ISLAND RIDES

Nissan TiIda 2013 “The 2013 Tiida is Nissans’ latest C-segment offering, ready to do battle with the Ford Focus and the VW Golf”

Nissan has produced some utterly bewildering cars; in recent years, they gained a lot of credibility thanks to cars like the Skyline range and more recently of course, the GT-R. That car continues to be the thorn in many a supercar manufacturer’s side. Therefore you would assume that any company who produces such performance-focused cars may not acknowledge that there are other corners of the market when it comes to making its more everyday cars. This is not the case with Nissan. Whilst they can produce cars that adorn the bedroom walls of young boys, they also know their way around the more sensible corners of the car market. The Tiida is perhaps Nissans’ most important car of the moment. It’s an extremely popular car in the Gulf and with good reason. It’s affordable, comfortable, spacious and a pleasant car to drive. The controls are light and very user friendly which makes for hassle-free motoring. 72.

fact magazine

It is a relatively understated car, but the designers have taken the best features from the previous model and spruced a few things up. The shape remains very similar to the previous generation car, however the smaller details such as lights, grilles and certain parts of the interior have been brought up to date. The interior is actually one of the highlights of the car; the packaging is excellent. I couldn’t work out how they had created so much space in the cabin from something that looks so compact from the exterior. Inside the Tiida you get a start/stop button in lieu of a traditional ignition, the radio/CD player and the A/C controls and nothing more. The digital age has brought about a tendency from manufacturers to overload us with various buttons and switches.

The interior is actually one of the highlights of the car; the packaging is excellent.

All too often I test a car and find that in the real world you only need around half of what is on offer in the car. The Nissan however, has everything you need and nothing you don’t. As an everyday motoring proposition, the Tiida is an excellent overall package. It does have some strong competition in this segment, but as a budget family car, it ticks all the right boxes. fact magazine

FASHION FOCUS

Hot off the ‘Fashion Catwalk’ at Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience, FACT talks exclusively to Bahraini London-based designer Lulwa Al Amin about her new Maharajainspired collection, what life was like growing up on the island, and her fashion inspiration... 76. fact magazine

L

ulwa Al Amin is a woman who is turning her childhood dream into a reality. She was the only Bahraini designer to showcase her talent and craft on the ‘Fashion Catwalk’ stage at Dubai Mall last month, debuting her Spring/Summer ‘14 collection that is ready to wow fashionistas everywhere. Born and raised in Bahrain, Lulwa says her earliest memory of being exposed to fashion, and realising she wanted to be a designer, was at the age of nine. “Growing up in Bahrain, I clearly recall skimming through my mother’s copies of Vogue magazine,” Lulwa says. “I would sneak her copies and sketch dresses, and from then on that is all I ever wanted to do.” And the learning process began from that very moment, as Lulwa would utilise every tool that surrounded her. “At that time, I was immersed, constantly, in books, magazines and TV,” she says. “But, it was the simplicity of living in Bahrain that gave me the opportunity to think and explore, and go beyond my bounds, to find what I was passionate about most, and that was the world of fashion.”

As far as vision goes, Lulwa believes in a no boundaries approach, something that is also evident in her inspiration for the Spring/Summer ‘14 women’s collection. She says, “Every collection stems from a particular theme, or a story, or an object that catches my interest at the time. There are no limitations to what inspires me or how far I can stretch my imagination.” This 17-piece collection truly illustrates her creative thought-process. It’s inspired by a trip to India with each piece embodying the era of the Maharajas and the opulent lives they led, more specifically, the life of the late Maharani Gayatri Devi. “Her charming, regal yet playful nature is what drew me to create a collection that harked back to a period of opulence,” Lulwa explains. “With intricate details featuring romantic pinks and vintage turquoise hues, I wanted to create a collection consisting of pieces suitable for any occasion, be it on safari or at the ball.”

Lulwa also considers her distinctive prints as art, and the clothing she designs as wearable art. She describes her signature style as “easy to wear with some sort of historical reference and a touch of fantasy.” It’s clear that for Lulwa, the title of fashion designer is much more than just a profession; it’s a secretive, personal, artistic, and creative process that she lives and breathes every moment of. “Fashion means everything to me,” she says. “But first and foremost it’s a way of expressing myself. It is also inspiring and thrilling to be able to inspire others.” Lulwa’s designs are ultimately an extension of her, and we imagine this idea being a prominent part of her future plans as Lulwa tells us she hopes of branching out and exploring new terrain in children’s and men’s wear, as well as a home products line. A passionate Bahraini woman who is sure to cause a stir in the fashion world - we can’t wait to see what Lulwa Al Amin will achieve in the future - as this is one woman for whom the saying, “if you can dream it, you can do it” fits just perfectly. GO: Shop Lulwa Al Amin at Labous, Bahrain.

The Spring/Summer ‘14 collection comes complete with exclusive pieces of jewellery from the Bahrain Jewellery Centre by Luisa Della Salda for Lulwa Al Amin SS14, as well as a range of clogs created in collaboration with Italian artisan shoemaker Giovanni del Forte.

ON THE MENU

There’s a new 5-star in town, and it’s safe to say that when we heard about the ample dining options at the newly-opened Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, we were more than spoilt for choice. Alas, the FACT team opted to go and review Lemon Tree, the ground floor restaurant offering up a dynamic (and delicious!) international menu, with the best of Indian, Asian, Mediterranean, and Arabic cuisines, served through an impressive buffet.

GO: For more information and reservations call 4002 7554

The first thing to strike you about Lemon Tree is the freshness of it’s subtle lemongrass fragrance and earthy atmosphere. The dining venue is spacious, practical, and, surprisingly, classy. Straight off to the starters and our first thought was “this is splendid” - there’s a huge variety of salads and you can even ‘create your own’ with fresh veggies and your choice of cold-cut meats, including chicken and beef, as well as seafood. There are nibbles and dips galore, with samosa, spring rolls, sushi, hummus, and plenty more on offer. As we tucked into a fresh selection of salad and dips with warm flat bread (which was just divine dipped in the mint, coriander and chaat masala chutney!), out came a stunning seafood platter, brazened with prawns, langoustine, tuna, shrimps and tomato,

set on a bed of octopus carpaccio. And if presentation isn’t enough to get you tucking in then you’ll be pleased to know that every ingredient on the plate was completely fresh and flavourful, though this one can get a little messy (you’ll need all hands on deck to break into the best part of the shrimps and langoustine!) so keep a napkin close. As well as this, we were treated to a plate of mighty meatiness. We tucked into the succulent rack of veal which had a melt-in-your-mouth taste, served with

roasted bell pepper, crispy greens and natural jus. The best thing about this dish was the perfection of the salt and pepper seasoning. The fillet mignon followed suit. Plated up with oven baked potato and tomato, the taste of this dish was uplifted with a beautifully balanced wine balsamic glaze - the chef advised us that this can be prepared to order at the Lemon Tree all you have to do is choose the meat you like and the vegetables to go alongside it and voila! Though we were filling up fast, there was no way we were going to miss dessert. All we can say is: WOW! Selection and presentation aside, the desserts at Lemon Tree were nothing short of scrumptious. We particularly enjoyed the red velvet cake with its smooth and delicate cream cheese filling. Lemon Tree went beyond our expectations with its palate pleasing dishes, inviting ambience and helpful staff. Walking out of the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa it was clear to see that all the thought, preparation and time that went into making this restaurant what it is, certainly paid off !

CHEF’S TABLE

CHEF MIKE WILKINSON Fine dining is a staple of the food scene in Bahrain, and now there’s a new player in town. Chef Mike Wilkinson is bringing passion, experience and f ive-star cuisine to Saveur in Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel… “I love the Middle East,” Chef Mike says. “I’ve worked in Dubai and Qatar, and for the last 10 years I’ve been trying to get in with Kempinski, so I’m very happy to be here.” As the new Chef de Cuisine, Chef Mike is bringing his training in classical French cuisine, and his worldly dining experience, knowledge and skills, straight to the Kempinski kitchen, and onto your plate. He starts off with preparing a low temperature salmon with cauliflower puree, apple glass, pickled cauliflower and olive oil. The salmon is vac-packed with various ingredients; a technique that Chef Mike says “takes all the air out and intensifies the flavour”. The winning component here, for us, was the cauliflower puree, which Chef Mike explains is blended with cream and milk, a dash of vanilla, and tonka beans. The dish is otherwise light and fresh with a salty, sweet acidic taste – perfect to gear up your palette for the next course. Next up was open ravioli of wild mushroom and avocado, with candied

tomatoes, toasted pine nuts and Parmesan foam. While preparing this dish, Chef Mike recalls watching his culinary inspiration, British chef Gordon Ramsay, getting hotheaded on the TV show Boiling Point. “I told my dad, ‘I want to work with him. I want to be a chef ’,” he says. His father replied, “oh, you can get a job in McDonalds!” A story he happily jokes about now because, as is evident, Chef Mike has come a very long way in his professional culinary journey, with a deep understating of, as well as genuine passion for, cooking food. Immediately we notice the immaculate presentation of the second serving. Chef Mike says, “Well, you eat with your eyes,” a true statement indeed. As we tucked in, a hint of saffron hits the back of your throat, while the avocado is delicious and the pine nuts give a lovely crunchy texture to what is ultimately a great earthy dish. We were then treated to roast fillet of beef with parsley puree, rosti potato, glazed carrots, and beef jus. Chef Mike advises that when it comes to producing the perfect medium-rare steak, “practice makes perfect”. Here, the parsley puree was a standout and, in the words of our photographer, “this steak is the best I’ve ever had.” It’s clear that Chef Mike has a true passion for fine-dining, and after our experience we can safely say that the Kempinski has landed a real foodie pioneer. We recommend you go and try his creations! fact magazine

The real solution to your fitness woes... Fitness guru Craig Heslop, Founder & Coach of Tribal Fitness, believes that a more back-to-basics and natural approach to living is the key to a healthy lifestyle…

The majority of our Members at Tribal Fitness have a goal to look and feel great. A combination of hard work and fun enables them to achieve this. These people invest sweat and money to achieve their fitness potential. There is only a small proportion of the population who can hold a full-time job whilst maintaining optimal fitness levels. If the majority of people are too tired, lazy or unmotivated then what is the solution?

Firstly, I’d like to make the point that health is more important than fitness. It’s fantastic that one can run a marathon but if their health affairs are not in good order they’ll end up digging themselves a hole. The fitness industry continues to grow as a solution to our corrupt lifestyle, which is at odds with our natural requirements. The car seat, office chair and sofa are the three pillars of modern living. Health and fitness do not need to be expensive. Not everyone can afford to hire a fitness professional. Their health and fitness can still be maintained by following the lifestyle principles we outline on our website (www.tribalfitness. com). We also offer ‘My Tribal Program’ for those who are restricted for time or money. Looking and feeling great starts with health. Reflecting on one’s lifestyle is to see how closely it reflects nature. A final thought, the lion lives naturally in the wild. He walks often, sprints occasionally, sleeps well and only eats organic food. He is big, healthy, strong and fast. The street cat lives in our world. He sits on his butt all day, rarely runs, sleeps in noise and eats our modified ‘food’. He is small, disease ridden, weak and slow. I’d rather be a lion. Don’t Overdo the Beauty Sleep

It’s important to get your sleep - it helps you feel your best, protects you against diabetes, wards off heart disease and even burns calories. But how much sleep do you really need? A study by researchers found that those that slept more than eight hours a day - including naps - were 15 per cent more likely to have metabolic syndrome than those who slept less. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors, linked to obesity, which increase your chance of having heart disease and other health problems, including diabetes and stroke. The authors of the study couldn’t say if the extra hours of sleep were the cause or the symptom of metabolic syndrome, but they suggested that “long sleepers” see health benefits from reducing the amount of sleep they get. But take care not to have too little sleep as studies among adults also show that getting less or much more than seven hours of sleep a night is associated with a higher mortality rate. Remember that the recommended number of hours for an adult is 7 – 8 hours and that quality of sleep is important. If your sleep is frequently interrupted or cut short, you’re not getting quality sleep. The quality of your sleep is just as important as the quantity! fact magazine .95

The Crux of Constructive Criticism Christal Dennis is a Personal Performance Coach and Hypnotherapist with a Masters in Psychology, Leadership Development and Coaching. She is dedicated to helping people overcome life’s hurdles and tapping in to their deepest potential...

Sometimes people ask our opinion. It’s wonderful to be able to help others, but unfortunately we can’t always deliver flowers and roses wrapped with silk ribbon. The truth can hurt. We all know because it’s hard to go through life without experiencing some kind of critical remarks. Did you notice how reviews from some people seem so much better than from others? So much better in fact you actually appreciate it because it didn’t have that sting that judgment so often has. The reason why some criticism is better than others is because some people have made an art of giving good critique so that they can help others improve without hurting their feelings. While others are really good at being

honest but still have to practice delivery, like when your four year old says, “Dad, your tummy is jiggly” Here are a few tips on how you can do it too: Always use “I” language, not “you” language. For example: I think this is great, and if you change this a little bit it will be even better. Be specific. Use the sandwich method. First let the person know how good they really are. Then give the criticism in the form of a future statement. For example: In the future if you did this, it will be great. Then give another compliment at the end. You have been doing really great work lately and it looks like this will be great too. And last but not least. Be able to take constructive criticism in the same great spirit that you give it!

Warm Up Your Look This Winter With the Hottest Hairstyles

As mornings become colder and gloomier, it may be hard to find motivation and hairspiration to keep your look fresh and exciting. That cozy heating system and hot shower can be harsh on hair, leaving it dull and lifeless. Be sure to load up on conditioner. But also, consider a new look to add life to those locks. Winter is a perfect time for a change of hairstyle, or a time to make an old look new again. Add a little style to the season and embrace the hottest hairstyle trends.

Make the Cut If you’ve considered going for a shorter hairstyle, now is the perfect time, with the season’s hottest new pixie cuts. Asymmetrical shapes with long sharp edges or tousled looks, a pixie cut is chic and totally fashionable. If you’ve always worn a longer hairstyle, consider taking the first step with one of this winter’s edgy bobs. Be sure to ask your hair stylist at TONI & GUY for styling tips and product recommendations. We have some awesome choices!

Color Your World A new hair color is a great way to change your style without opting for a drastic haircut. Why not add some heat to your winter with a sexy, fun color change this season. A reverse ombre hair color, where roots are lighter and ends gradually become darker, is a hot new direction in hair color. Celebs like Jessica Simpson and Beyonce are fearlessly rocking this flirty look. Shades of reds are showing up bold this season! Whether you want a dramatic coppery red or a cool auburn look, red is a fun way to spice things up. If red is your hair color this winter be sure to invest in a color protect ant or color depositing shampoo to keep your color bright. Whether you’re looking for a drastic change or just a subtle way to amp up your hairstyle, TONI & GUY BAHRAIN brings you the hottest hairstyle ideas for 2013 and offer a variety of looks that range from hot and daring to pretty and understated. Ali Fareed Blogger - follow @AskAliFareed Lives in Bahrain

Describe your ideal weekend on the island... I’d start off by spending Thursday night with friends chilling after the workday is done till the late hours. Late Friday breakfast followed by a lazy afternoon by the beach would be bliss. Evenings are usually dedicated for quality time with the family. I try to avoid crowded malls but there must be a quick visit to check out the latest movie releases. 98. fact magazine

island insider

your top three local hangouts...

Coco’s: This old Café in the heart of Adliya is always buzzing & for a good reason. Great food, good value for money and lovely outdoor seating. Café Lilou: By far the “it” place for breakfast. Always save room for their exquisite desserts, my personal favorite is the “Assiette en Fete”. The Domain: Unbeatable views of Bahrain, and a wide variety of amazing restaurants/ lounges to choose from.

Advice from you, for people visiting Bahrain...

There’s always something happening on the island. I’d say best time to visit would be when it’s cooler around Dec – Mar. Don’t miss out on exploring the historical sites. Take a walking tour down Manama souq & Muharraq. If you’re into sports be sure to book a driving test around the BIC track or a 4x4 adventure! Foodies, explore Adliya 338. You won’t be disappointed!
