And, in the blink of an eye, half of 2023 has passed, and what have you done? I know I have done much less than my plans at the beginning of the year (maybe in the next half of the year? Fingers crossed!). However, a new home has been one of my goals, and this is finally happening this month. Talking about homes, we bring some exciting highlights from Salone del Mobile.Milano 2023, one of the biggest design trade fairs in the field, and the travel section showcases a selection of luxurious villas in the world where you find a home away from home.
Our beauty pages are filled with new products, from CHANEL’s LES BEIGES summer line to Givenchy eye care. We finally held a glamorous party to celebrate the winners of our Ohlala Spa & Wellness Awards Bahrain 2023 – check out the coverage and winners’ list. We had an enlightening chat with Budoor Steele from Chawan Japanese Tea House. She told us how this unique career path entered her life and what principles she wants to share with the Bahraini community. We nourished our bodies with an array of Asian-inspired dishes at BO.SABI located at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa – read all about their new menu. We drove the new Maserati Grecale, and our love for speed and comfort just grew bigger! Enjoy your reading!
Fernanda Langhammer Editor-in-Chief @ohlalamagazine editor@ohlala-magazine.comHandbags are a staple accessory in most women’s wardrobes, and this month we’ve noticed a curious collection of weird-looking bags that we oddly want! Would you consider carying any of them?
The animal kingdom is an endless source of inspiration for the fashion world, mainly for its coat designs. However, Johanna Ortiz went further and re-created a big cat head in a natural material as one of their summer handbags. The fringe detail is the spot-on final touch.
JW Andersen also found inspiration in nature to create funky-looking arm candy. The hooked fish handbag looks like a piece of macrame art – a cute choice for your bikini days.
As you can see, fringes are again quite popular, and Ferragamo went extra long with the loose strings. Their oval-shaped clutch comes with an eye-catching ‘tail’ – chic and striking!
ETRO are known for their hip and unique style. This season, they bring an apple bag as one of their more unusual creations. The golden metal fruit can be paired with the apple chain holder to carry your actual apple in a fashionable yet unconventional way.
Talking about eccentricity, Paco Rabanne mix metal and loose chains in their handbag collection. The entire metallic bag is composed of many elements and is full of details. A basic white tee and jeans would best match such a quirky accessory.
Inspired by our homes theme this month, we bring a selection of comfy loungewear – a casual clothing style composed of T-shirts, tank tops, capris and sweatshirts. A wardrobe that can be mixed and matched and take you from the couch to running errands in no time!
The trend of wearing pyjama- and negligee-inspired pieces is still on for this season. Made from cotton or lightweight fabrics such as silk, these clothing pieces add an edgy vibe to your outfits. The shirtand-trousers combination creates a sophisticated loungewear composition, while the nightgown twist is a good night-out pick.
Still in homes mood, the vintage upholstery fabrics from sofas and oldtime curtains are the inspiration here. Eye-catching chintz, complex jacquard designs and busy flower prints cover dresses, trousers and handbags – wear your childhood or grandma’s home to create jazzy outfits!
Mint green represents tranquillity and health and is associated with freshness and creativity – a good colour for your home and summer looks. It coordinates well with other pastel shades such as lavender, soft pink, baby blue, light yellow or even grey and earthy tones.
Bella and Blue is a French/Bahraini online clothing store that embodies the latest international trends with a local twist. Established in 2013 by a Bahraini woman, the store offers a wide variety of unique clothing for women of all ages and sizes.
The hot season asks for lightweight fabrics and refreshing colours. We propose a mix of orange, light blue and brown to paint your spring and summer outfits. Embracing the hues surrounding us during this time is a great way to compose incredible looks.
During Milan Design Week 2023, Bentley Home launched a collection in collaboration with three world-renowned designers and architects: Federico Peri, Riccardo Cavaciocchi and Carlo Colombo. The capsule reaffirms the substance and elegance of Bentley Home Design in partnership with leading creatives engaged for their talent and innovative use of sustainable materials, organic forms, expert craftsmanship and cutting-edge production technology. Federico Peri created a table series, including a dining table, a side table and a coffee table, which is available in a new Paper Marble finish by Paper Factor. Architect Riccardo Cavaciocchi, the founder of Paper Factor, has created a tabletop finish similar in look and feel to marble but created using ‘raw paper’ and natural pigments. And architect Carlo Colombo designed a sofa and armchair, inspired by a Bentley car with a fine wooden frame and beautifully proportioned curves, and a bed.
Celine has launched its La Collection De Saint-Tropez capsule inspired by the French Riviera. The brand’s designer Hedi Slimane moved to the region when she joined Celine in 2018 and for the past five years, she has been exploring Saint-Tropez, reflecting the sophisticated nostalgia of the area in parallel with the brand’s Parisian codes. La Collection De Saint-Tropez campaign was shot along the French Riviera coastline and to make it extra special, Celine customised a vintage Mini Moke vehicle. The small summer beach convertible car was initially designed for military purposes. It first appeared in 1964 but quickly became a symbol of freedom and leisure in many seaside towns, especially in Saint-Tropez, where French actress Brigitte Bardot famously drove it. The automobile has been personalised with a Triomphe wooden steering wheel, a Triomphe canvas hood and a dashboard featuring tan leather elements, wicker seats and spare wheel protection. A golden Triomphe signature appears on the wheels and gear shift – a cute element added to the campaign.

Inspired by the grace and strength of athletes, it balances high-tech fabrics with classic designs. The collection is crafted to reflect the beauty of the game and the empowering role that sports play in all aspects of a woman’s life. Founded in 2004 in New York City, Tory Burch is an American luxury brand known for timeless pieces and rich storytelling that evokes optimism and joy. The watchmaking brand Jaeger-LeCoultre has announced Lenny Kravitz as a new Ambassador for the maison. The multifaceted musician, singer, songwriter, producer, multiinstrumentalist, actor, designer and photographer is the archetype of the modern man. Since the beginning of his career, Lenny Kravitz has been defiantly original, always following his own path, steadfast in his artistic vision. With a strong parallel between his creative philosophy and that of Jaeger-LeCoultre, the relationship with the maison has come very naturally. A watch enthusiast since childhood, when the musician became fascinated by his father’s chronographs, he says: “I feel very drawn to Jaeger-LeCoultre. The way they combine such a high level of craftsmanship, design and function in their watches – that really resonates with me.” One of his favourite watches is the Reverso, which he paired with a black silk jumpsuit and layered jewellery when he performed at the 2023 Oscars ceremony.
The Fitting Room is a new platform available only in the Middle East with plans to expand further to international markets. Empire is MARLI New York’s new fine jewellery collection inspired by one of the city’s most famous landmarks: the Empire State Building.
New York City is an inspiration for all sorts of things, from music to jewellery. And MARLI New York, as the name suggests, have the metropolis at the core of their creations.
Empire is the brand’s new addition to their fine jewellery collection. It explores the Empire State of Mind (also a well-known song by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z) by combining Old New York glamour with a modern aesthetic, marvellous shine with magnificent hues, and delicate details with bold designs.
“I wanted to return to the meaning of New York as the Empire State and summarise its essence in three words: dreamful, dynamic, unstoppable,” says Maral Artinian, MARLI New York’s Founder and CEO. “It’s a state of mind where every dream can become reality.”
The Empire collection seeks to capture a way of living where dreams are powerful and destinies can be rewritten. The ensemble crafted in 18-carat gold and rose gold plays with textures, volumes and forms to render the city’s strength and energy.
Two-tone chain links juxtaposed with dazzling circular charms sit at the centre of the collection. The incorporation of a circle motif gives the creations a sense of eternity, enhanced by brilliant-cut diamonds that shine as bright as the lights of the big apple. The diamond setting on the circular charms defines the assortment of necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings from other collections.
Create your own unique style! The addition of an extender allows wearers to transform the bracelets into chains. They can also be worn on their own or stacked together.

Parmigiani Fleurier launches Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph timepieces in 18-carat rose gold.
Swiss luxury watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier has unveiled its latest Tonda PF Chronographe Rattrapante collection, which has been tastefully reinterpreted in 18-carat rose gold.
Dedicated to short-time measurement, the Tonda PF Chronographe Rattrapante (Split Seconds Chronograph) with its two-column wheels is an exceptional watchmaking instrument.
The newest interpretation of the timepiece is presented with an 18-carat rose gold case and bracelet. It also features a sandblasted platinum dial complemented aesthetically by rose gold hands and applied rose gold hour markers.
The watch’s sapphire crystal case-back allows the wearer to admire its elegant 18-carat rose gold movement, which features open-worked bridges and a barrel bearing the signature of Michel Parmigiani, founder of the brand, who created the calibre to mark the maison’s 20th anniversary.
Using Parmigiani Fleurier’s most distinctive complications, the watch is powered by Calibre PF361, a manually wound movement that beats at a rate of 5Hz or 36,000Vph, allowing the chronograph time intervals to one-tenth-of-a-second precision. The split-seconds chronographs have been skilfully designed to measure intermediate (split) times and are equipped with two superimposed chronograph hands – one is dedicated to the chronograph and the other to operate the split-seconds function via the pusher integrated into the crown.
Moreover, the timepiece’s balance wheel is held in place by a cross-through bridge in 18-carat rose gold – a material used to form the entire structure (baseplate and bridges) holding the moving parts. The architecture of the calibre has been designed to ensure its longevity and enable it to withstand shocks.
The case and bracelet are integrated into an overall fluid design, framed by the maison’s signature knurled bezel and featuring teardrop-shaped chronograph pushers.
The collection’s movement components are adorned with finishes that are a signature of Parmigiani Fleurier, including hand-bevelled edges on all of the bridges. The Calibre PF361 component comprises 309 parts, including 35 jewels, and offers a 65-hour power reserve.
The simplistic aesthetic of the dial is designed to enhance the readability of the hours and minutes as well as the chronograph indications, which are complemented by a small-seconds indicator at six o’clock. The tachymeter and pulsometer scales encircle the dial, while the central split-seconds hands are distinguished from each other by different colours. Complementing the 18-carat rose gold applied hour-markers are the skeletonised hour and minute hands also in the same material. The new rose gold Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph is offered in a limited and numbered edition of 30 pieces. An additional alligator leather strap is also provided with the timepiece.
We tend to give extra attention to our faces when it comes to moisturising, but our bodies also need love. Air conditioning and sun exposure leach out water, dehydrating the skin. We’ve selected a few lotions to add to your everyday beauty routine – we are on a soft-skin mission!
For its 2023 LES BEIGES collection, CHANEL has revisited the line’s iconic products offering them in limited-edition travel sizes.
Mademoiselle Chanel was ahead of her time. In 1927, she already envisioned a market for the on-the-go lifestyle. She wanted to support women as their way of living evolved, so she made her skincare and makeup products available in smaller sizes. It was a selection of beauty essentials that could easily be slipped into an evening clutch or fit in a small piece of luggage.
Inspired by these formats, CHANEL has launched the LES BEIGES
Summer To-Go collection. The line captures the essence of a radiant complexion and a healthy glow-up look in miniature packaging. As sensory and intuitive as ever, LES BEIGES essentials are perfect for achieving a fresh, luminous touch anytime and for any occasion.
The LES BEIGES WATER-FRESH TINT Travel Size (15ml) is a water-based complexion product infused with micro-droplet pigments that leave a nearly invisible, luminous veil on the skin. Its eight shades cater to all skin tones, giving the complexion a beautiful sun-kissed look.
The LES BEIGES ILLUMINATING OIL Travel Size (50ml) envelops the skin, leaving it with an iridescent shimmer. Enriched with jasmine oil, it gives skin a slightly coppery, golden glow. Apply to the face, shoulders, décolleté, arms and hair for instant radiance.
The OMBRE PREMIÈRE LAQUE coats eyelids with a golden shimmer and is featured in two jewel tones: Rayon, a soft, luminous beige, and Quartz Rose, a radiant pastel pink.
For the lips, the ROUGE COCO BAUME delivers a light, fresh look with two new shades: Pink Delight, an ultra-natural, soft pink, and Sweet Treat, a semi-matte brownish mauve. And to round off the sun-kissed look, CHANEL has designed two new shades of ROUGE COCO FLASH: Destination, a rosy beige that enhances lips with its nude shimmer, and Escapade, a slightly warm sienna red. Pack your favourite products, and happy travels!
Our complexion is exposed to many different sources of strain: stress, urban pollution, screen light and sleep deprivation, to list some of them. The delicate skin around the eye ends up being most affected. To protect this area, Givenchy has added a new product in its Skin Perfecto range, the Firming and Smoothing Eye Care. The eye cream has a formula specially developed to correct the eye contour. Its anti-ageing and radiance-perfecting action leaves this fragile area looking smoother, firmer and brighter.
A Vitamin Blend Complex packed with vitamin-rich active ingredients is central to the Skin Perfecto line. This ultimate vitamin cocktail concentrates a pink pomelo extract, stabilised vitamin C and a pink pepper extract to energise and revive the skin’s vitality. The products in the range provide the epidermis surface with nutrients, fatty acids and vitamins.
The Firming and Smoothing Eye Care formula is composed of 97% natural origin ingredients, the Vitamin Blend Complex and an energising plant-based extract rich in taurine to help reduce signs of fatigue. It also features firming peptides and pearls that provide immediate radiance. The light and refreshing texture is easily absorbed, leaving the skin smooth and hydrated. It is also an excellent make-up base.
The expert applicator has four sculpted waves intended to massage and improve circulation, and its tilted tip allows for precise application. The innovative shape enables an effective formula administration on the eye contour, stimulates cellular energy and smooths the epidermis.
In compliance with the brand’s social and environmental responsibility policy entitled The Audacity of Reinvention, the tip is removable to facilitate recycling the tube.
The sensitive eye contour needs extra care and Givenchy has launched the Firming and Smoothing Eye Care to help you fight signs of ageing in this area.

Isn’t it great to find something you thought you had lost? Jonathan Cohen found a box filled with books he had collected over the years, many of which he assumed he didn’t have anymore. As he sat to sift through them, he realised that there were various books of women artists that he loved – this discovery became the inspiration for this collection.
The books were by Frida Kahlo, Lee Krasner and Judit Reigl, women who somehow were overshadowed by their male partners for a period or had subverted ideas around gender and were driving forces within their respective artistic movements. Jonathan envisioned them in their studios or homes, seeking refuge in their work while gaining strength and freedom. This driving force created an impact on the process of creation of this collection.
The prints are centred on Jonathan’s favourite flowers: Matilija poppies, snapdragons, hydrangeas and ranunculus. Additionally, the looks are painted in polka dots and rainbow stripes with a psychedelic twist giving the impression that they are melting. The paintings were then transferred into jacquard knits and embroideries, enhancing the craft and the story of these empowered artistic women.
The work with leather is a partnership with Evolved by Nature (a biotech company) and offers a contrast to the colour-rich prints, bringing toughness and fearlessness to the capsule. Much like the women Jonathan drew inspiration from, the Spring 2023 collection is layered and nuanced, offering his unique perspective on them.
Some skills are unique, and this month, OHLALA had the pleasure of uncovering Budoor Steele’s mastering of the art of Japanese tea.
OHLALA - Tell us more about Chawan Japanese Tea House. What is the story, and what exactly is the concept that you offer?
Budoor Steele - Chawan is a cultural hub bridging traditional Japanese culture and Bahrain. The concept is based on the art and philosophy of the 400-year-old tradition known as Sadō, ‘The Way of Tea’. The chashitsu (tearoom) is a place of peace where customers can step into a space of tranquillity, away from everyday life stress and enjoy an artisanal cup of tea. It also aims to elevate the tea culture and raise the standards for customers and the food and beverage (F&B) industry. At Chawan, customers learn the art of kimono dressing, how to brew tea, participate in a traditional tea ceremony or practice Japanese calligraphy. Besides the various tea experiences, tea-related workshops are offered to deepen guests’ knowledge. We also provide F&B training, menu pairing and supply tea directly from Japan.
OHLALA - How did this passion for Japanese tea flourish? Was it just a hobby at first, and then it became your professional vision?
Budoor - The path of tea was never a hobby. It all started in the tearoom in 2008 when I had my first bowl of matcha. The peacefulness the tearoom offered and the philosophy behind the practice sparked my interest. And since then, it became my Ikigai (purpose). Sadō has changed my life in more ways than one. I have become more aware of my surroundings, present in each moment and appreciate the little things often taken for granted. But above all, I have learned acceptance. This mindset and feeling was something I wanted to share with others.
OHLALA - What are the steps one needs to follow to become a tea master?
Budoor - Becoming a tea master is a lifelong journey. There is always more to learn and the more you understand, the less you feel you know. Mastering the Japanese tea ceremony requires 10 years of practice. Like most academic structures, Sadō has many levels of certification, ranging from beginner to advanced practitioner and additional categories from instructors to professors. Alongside the tea ceremony practice, I have also obtained an International Tea Mastery and Tea Sommelier licence from
the ITEI (International Tea Education Institute), where I am currently part of the faculty.
OHLALA - What has been the response of the Bahraini community to Chawan?
Budoor - I believe that the people in Bahrain have a beautiful mindset and are eager to try and experience new things. Even though educating consumers and spreading awareness about tea and its culture takes time, the consumer palate quickly adapts to appreciate Japanese teas. I have not had a single negative encounter, and I believe that if high-quality tea is brewed correctly, it becomes a unique experience.
OHLALA - What do you like most about what you do?
Budoor - I enjoy the reactions of the consumers. When they have their first bowl of matcha or enjoy a professional tea experience, they leave with a sense of serenity, making it all worth it.
OHLALA - You are representing the Japanese culture outside Japan. Do you feel that this is a lot of responsibility? What are the values that you think are most important to highlight?
Budoor - Yes, it is a huge responsibility to represent the culture. Thus, one must have the proper education and knowledge. I hold a masters in Japanese humanities from Kyushu University – Japan, with a thesis based on the tea culture system. Apart from practising Sadō, I am also certified in Kimono dressing and the art of Japanese confectionery known as Wagashi.
OHLALA - What do you enjoy most about Bahrain?
Budoor - I enjoy the cosy atmosphere and the diversity of our little island, which reflects beautifully on the cuisine and the lifestyle we all enjoy.
OHLALA - What is something in our country that you believe everyone should experience?
Budoor - Traditional Bahraini cuisine and horse riding, both of which I dearly miss when away from home.
@chawanbhSalone del Mobile.Milano is one of the most anticipated home fairs in the world. The event happened recently in Milan, Italy, and we’ve rounded up some exciting showcases. Check them out!
Last year, OHLALA headed to Milan to attend the event; this year, we watched from afar. However, we have our favourite highlights.
Every two years, the Salone alternates a dedicated section to kitchens and bathrooms with EuroLuce, an exhibit dedicated to lighting. For 2023, EuroLuce was back and highly anticipated since the last one had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. More than ever, the interior design ideas presented at Salone are inspired by everyday life. A common narrative observed is that the brands based their concepts on family memories and habits, but also praising comfort with an elegant atmosphere banishing worry and anxiety from home spaces. There was an air of softness and gracefulness from lighting, sofas, storage units and bookcases. Surprising materials found a way of looking cohesive, such as leather and steel, and wood proved once again to be one of the prime materials. We noticed a tendency to use curved structures, supporting the concept of cleanliness and comfort. Ergonomic designs and eclectic usage were some of the characteristics also on display.
As seen lately, the concept of minimalism is giving space to homes with more character, and to support this trend, colour is one of the key elements. The use of different shades promotes a perception of positivity and a sense of well-being while also creating a difference between environments. Bold hues are used to add accents, but a well-coordinated mix of soft palettes helps to give dimension. These are some of the brands with exciting concepts:
The furniture company celebrate design through their love for craftsmanship and mother nature references with a passion for architecture and wood. They also embrace environmental responsibility by planting a new tree for every piece of furniture sold, embodying their commitment to protect and respect our natural world.
Milla & Milli use fine Croatian wood, allowing them to create exclusively with solid material, pushing the boundaries of what can be done in the world of designer furniture. A mix of solid ash wood and simple yet strong steel compose their Eternel bookcase, Bloom coffee tables and Bloom ICON cabinet.
For this brand, design is about shaping matter with ideas. Guided by the values of simplicity, lightness, challenge and wonder, MDF Italia creates furniture capable of coming alive and fitting in diverse environments. With the idea of being essential, functional and flexible, the products have no intention of stealing the aesthetics of the surrounding area but rather respect the spirit of every space they inhabit.
Their contemporary designs can be seen in indoor furniture such as sofas, bookcases, dining tables and chairs and various outdoor pieces. They also have a whole section of their work dedicated to the office world, catering to reception areas, conference rooms, open spaces, outdoor settings and more.
The company is a family business located on the southeast coast of Sweden. They are driven by curiosity and continuously search for the unexpected, yet to be discovered. For a product to be considered new, it must demonstrate a different attitude towards shape, function, material or the industrial production process. In their view, a new piece of furniture should be better at something and offer an alternative to what is already available.
OM and Max are some of the latest characters in their line. OM is a chair with a generously slender seat supported by minimal construction. A moulded piece of plywood turns the hind legs into an accommodating backrest. At only 4.5kg, OM is a lightweight chair both for hand and eye. Max is a dressed-up variation of the Maximus chair presented in 2021. It offers soft comfort with moulded foam and an array of colours and textures.
Artemide showcased a customisable light line and Foscarini presented their innovative solutions. However, our favourite project is from Slamp with the Aria Infinita designed by Zaha Hadid Studio. Slamp have been at the forefront of creating original, eclectic and contemporary lamps since 1994, taking current inspiration from the natural world, architectural and sartorial genius and artistic trends. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Slamp’s collaboration with Hadid Design Studio, the iconic Aria takes on a new form in a modular version. The illuminated system undulates throughout a space with diverse polycarbonate layers that create fluidity. Aria Infinita is a dynamic sculpture that translates Zaha’s signature, composed of sinuous lines and fluid shapes. It is a floating, luminous element that allows light to flow in space, continuously changing shapes. Since the light can be replicated indefinitely, it enables designers and architects to customise the pendant.
The Salone trade fair happens at Fiera Milano Rho grounds, but the whole city of Milan embraces design and happenings around the theme occur around town. Even brands not related to homes embark on this journey with inspiring projects. These are the ones we want to share with you:
La Manufacture is a luxury design brand, and this year, they showcased their contemporary creations at Casa Manzoni – a historical and prestigious residence where the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni once lived. Immersed in a dream-like and frozen-in-time atmosphere, three new collections by Sebastian Herkner were presented, along with pieces by Neri&Hu, Nendo, Luca Nichetto, Patrick Norguet, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Front, Ana Moussinet, and others.
Seven distinct rooms and an outdoor patio were the settings for the three new collections by German designer Sebastian Herkner called: Moss, Gem and Breeze, each united by a reference to nature and its elements. Every product features rounded lines that look as though they are composed of superimposed gems or stones. They support a large dining table or smaller coffee and side tables – the Gem series plays with shapes, sizes and colours, allowing the user to create infinite variations.
Maison Matisse invited the British designer Faye Toogood to interpret the black ink on white paper drawings from the book Dessins: Thèmes et Variations (1943) by Henri Matisse. The French visual artist shaped many art movements with a joyful optimism, a will to experiment and a quest to balance colour and form. With Maison Matisse, his universe continues to inspire and find new expression in design objects – collaborating with up-and-coming and renowned talents to interpret Matisse’s explorations. The result of the collaboration with Faye Toogood is a collection of furniture for the living room or bedroom that reveals a less wellknown universe of the master and which Maison Matisse wants to bring out, a different perspective from the colourful work we are used to seeing – his black and white drawings. The results are sophisticated pieces with an artsy twist.
The influential fashion house also offers a luxurious home collection. According to the brand, the aesthetics of HERMÈS’ creations are inspired by the authenticity of their shapes and the innate strength of their minimalism.
This year, the stage for the collection displayed a framework composed of iron rods and concrete. Grids and lines created a robust structure for the pieces consisting of unique elements such as blown glass for minimalist lamps, traditional upholstery for a simple, refined chair and virtuoso hand embroidery for rugs with highly graphic motifs. Bronze, glass, wood and leather were showcased in their most primitive manifestations or juxtaposed, highlighting organic materials. The muted colours support the expression of figures central to the house’s heritage. Equestrian celebrations adorn a porcelain breakfast service with cheerful lines, as well as rugs and blankets that burst with an imaginative glamour.
Danish designer Cecilie Manz conceived the Ancelle d’Hermès armchair made with a robust frame in solid wood with a sheet of leather that creates a soft and elegant seat. Heir to a Scandinavian tradition that merges robustness with minimalism, this armchair surprises with the perfection of its sleek design.

A delectable new menu is what Fernanda Langhammer and the OHLALA team encountered at BO.SABI, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa.
Iam always very excited to embark on a journey through fusion flavours, mainly when it involves a selection of Pan-Asian dishes (one of my favourite cuisines) and BO.SABI is the right place to go if you are looking for a wide selection that will cater to all your cravings. Not only will the food find a soft spot in you, but the décor complements the experience. The wood ceiling, bamboo touches and mosaic flooring create a relaxed vibe. While the details, such as pop art-inspired canvasses on the walls and rising sun wood panels above the door that leads to the pool area and stage, give the final cool touches. We were there for lunchtime, and a nice amount of light entered the room, giving it a vibrant feel. The ambient music was at the right volume without disturbing our chit-chat but creating a pleasant atmosphere. Black plates and cutlery added a modern accent to the whole dining scene.
We were greeted with a Yuzu Slush mocktail freshly prepared by Frazer, the bartender. The drink consists of lime and grapefruit juice, sugar syrup and a dash of pineapple. These drinks can be overpowering and sweet, but this one was perfectly balanced and beautifully decorated with a grapefruit slice and a rosemary sprig – so refreshing, it felt like summer!
We headed to BO.SABI to try their new menu items, so if you are already a fan, don’t miss the fresh dishes. The feast started with a selection of makis. BO.SABI is known for preparing this Japanese delicacy skilfully (are you a big sushi enthusiast? Don’t miss their sushi nights every Thursday). Now, they’ve added new creations to the already varied spread.
We had the Crispy Jumbo Maki, a combination of lobster tempura, asparagus, carrot and miso mayonnaise; this was the table’s favourite for the explosion of flavours, perfect crunch and balance of sweetness and tangy punch. We also tried the Veggie Sesame Roll with asparagus, carrot, cucumber, avocado and sesame seeds with a touch of smoked vegetable glace, an excellent pick for vegetarians – it was crunchy and the ratio of rice to other ingredients was spot on! But it doesn’t end there; we also tasted the Rainbow Roll which is an encounter of crab meat, salmon, tuna, sea bass, avocado, cucumber, smoked eel sauce and sesame seeds; Osaka Salmon Roll composed of salmon, avocado, carrot and spicy mayo and last but not least, Caterpillar, a perfect pick for eel lovers.
While munching our sushi, we were also served the Wonton Soup, a light broth with Chinese chicken dumplings, mixed greens and scallions. The warm liquid had a mushroom essence, and the vegetables added a nice crunch – a comforting dish to break the innovative maki spread.
The Roasted Duck & Mango Salad surprisingly showed us that duck and mango is a marriage made in heaven, and the Tuna Salad had perfectly seared tuna slices marinated in sambal (an Indonesian chilli paste) on a bed of pickled asparagus, daikon, baby green lettuce and redcurrant sauce. These were followed by warm and fluffy Chinese BBQ Buns that are offered with chicken or meat. If you ever get to try these, don’t forget to add the chilli black bean with spicy cherry hoisin sauce; it is divine.
It was main dishes time and after a strong start, we were all looking forward to what else the new menu had to offer. We were told that the best seller so far has been the Korean-Style Spicy Beef, so we had to have it. The dish is prepared with beef spareribs, ginger, soy and barbecue sauce and to our surprise, pearls of beetroot, radish and carrot complemented the mix. The dark colours were contrasted by a purple sago cracker placed on top of the soft meat. After having the first bite, we understood why it is so popular; the sticky flavours matched well with the tenderness of the beef, and the white rice that accompanies it serves as a great complement to balance the intense flavours.
If you like an extra kick to your rice, the Kow Sai Chiang Mai is a wonderful Thai-inspired fried rice with an aromatic touch. We tried the chicken and vegetarian options, and both were full of zest with a special touch of Thai basil – the pickled cabbage, lime, and coriander also gave an extra dimension to the simple recipe. However, the star dish was the Indonesian Prawn Curry with jumbo prawns, garden peas, diced potato
and coconut milk. As one of my dining companions commented: the shrimps were chunky, firm and tasty! The flavours had a hint of sweetness that paired well with the spicy and distinct herbs in the sauce. And, as you find in every good Asian restaurant, we had to try at least one noodle dish. The new addition to the menu is the Thai Chili & Basil Noodles, it looked very plain, but the stir-fried noodles were cooked with chilli, kaffir lime, golden lime and Thai basil; as you can already figure out, the aroma coming from the plate was glorious and the simple egg noodle had a complex and delightful seasoning.
We barely had space for dessert, but who could resist? We shared the Thai Mango Sticky Rice and the Japanese Cheesecake served with red plum and passion fruit custard. But the selection of Mochi conquered our hearts – coconut, strawberry cheesecake, vanilla and our favourite, mango. It had a thin layer of sweet glutinous rice dough and a generous, delicious ice cream filling.
Are you looking for a solid Asian menu? BO.SABI is the place to go!

AS LONG-TIME TEST DRIVERS, THE OHLALA TEAM ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO GET BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A DAILY LIFESTYLE LUXURY VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT VEHICLE IS A MASERATI.
Who wouldn’t want to spend the day in a Maserati? This month, OHLALA got to do exactly that thanks to the great team at Maserati Bahrain, who handed us the ‘keys’ to the 2023 Grecale. Needless to say, we were super excited to get our hands on this high-end machine.
Named after a North Easterly Mediterranean wind, the Grecale is certainly a breath of fresh air. The moment we laid eyes on the vehicle, we knew we were taking in something rather special.
At the front end of this striking SUV sits a low and imposing grille, complete with brushed chrome inserts and a large Trident emblem. This flawlessly designed feature, along with the perfectly sculpted bonnet and contemporary LED headlights, combine to create an aggressive-looking front end that seems to stare you down, daring you to try and tame it. We appreciated the seamless transition between the front and the sides, where elegant yet sporty curves and lines create a visually pleasing surface. Body-coloured side-skirts and 20-inch alloy wheels further add to the classy nature of the exterior as do the flush-to-the-body door handles. The trapezoidal dimensions of the vehicle are evident at the rear end, where
boomerang taillights – inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 – integrate flawlessly with the uniquely crafted lip spoiler. The body-coloured bumpers at both front and rear contribute toward the luxury SUV’s upmarket appearance, while the twin dual exhaust system, sitting under the diffuser, provides a subtle reminder of the Grecale’s on-road intentions.
The refined yet sporty feel of the exterior is skilfully complemented by the mastery of the interior design. The cabin of the Grecale exudes a sense of sophistication and elegance and is peppered with high-tech flourishes. Only the best materials from Italy have been used throughout, including an open pore wood as one of the many options and premium leather seats. The cabin also features beautiful trimmings such as the burnished inserts on the centre console and door panels. The button on the door rather than conventional door handles facilitates easy exit in the Grecale. The spacious nature of the Grecale provides comfortable seating for up to five occupants, while the cargo area provides 20cu/ft of storage space. This capacity can be greatly increased when the power-folding rear seating is laid flat, accomplished by the simple push of a button in the boot. A flat load floor is located underneath these rear seats, providing yet another storage option.
“The refined yet sporty feel of the exterior is skilfully complemented by the mastery of the interior design.”
The 2023 Grecale features the latest Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) multimedia system, operated through a 12.3-inch screen or voice control. This is the largest screen ever fitted in a Maserati and boasts a resolution of 15 million pixels in Ultra HD. An 8.8-inch screen has also been included in the setup and is used to access various additional vehicle controls. The MIA is powered by the Android Auto operating system, which we found to be impressive in terms of response speed and overall operating performance. The system also allows two smartphones to connect at once via Bluetooth and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Noteworthy optional extras include a state-of-the-art head-up display, three-zone climate control and a Sonus Faber 3D sound system with up to 21 speakers.
The key, which is actually a very funky show-off wristband, is a standard feature with the Grecale, allowing for complete hands-free easy access and engine start.
Our favourite moment of the day was firing up the Grecale's 2.0-litre turbocharged 48watt mild hybrid engine. Not only does the engine have the sweet Maserati sound to it, but the SUV’s potent powertrain can deliver up to 300hp (220kW) and 450Nm of torque. The Maserati Grecale also comes with two other engines, the Modena with 330hp and the Trofeo with the Maserati Nettuno engine, giving you 530hp.
The exceptional four-wheel SUV is equipped with various driving modes including Comfort, GT, Sport and Corsa for the Trofeo Nettuno engine. Its versatile and capable performance ensures it’s as comfortable on the road as it is in the rough.
We found the combination of these driving modes and the optional air suspension system to be sublime, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time navigating the roadways of the Kingdom. Furthermore, Maserati has included a full suite of safety and driver assistance systems, ensuring the well-being of all occupants.
In the Grecale, Maserati has created an everyday SUV that is amongst the very best in the luxury segment. Not only does it exhibit a modern Italian design, it also delivers a capable performance and houses an impressive list of desirable technical features.

It is said that home is a feeling and not a place. A house with many rooms and spotless interior design doesn’t necessarily represent a home. So, what makes a heartless construction become a space where we feel safe and want to spend most of our time?
A few years ago, the furniture store IKEA released its Life at Home Report showing that the traditional housing concept had evolved. The study came up with five core emotional needs to create the feeling of home: privacy, comfort, ownership, security and belonging. Meaning that you might need all five to transform your bricks-and-mortar construction into a loving, livable space. However, the latest report from 2022 showed that two new emotional needs had been added to the five core ones: enjoyment
and accomplishment. According to them, the first one comes with the sense that our refuges should give us mental and physical space to enjoy fun activities and follow our passions. In terms of accomplishment, during the pandemic, a lot of activities were done in our nests. We embraced successful activities such as work and study but also hosted unforgettable dinner parties and finished complex jigsaws. Our homes became something even more relevant in our lives. They became spaces with a greater sense of purpose.
In other words, create a residence that gives you joy! It will help if you tick all the emotional needs above. If not, look for solutions to implement them in your life and make your shelter the place you really want to be.
