Editor’s Letter

With cooler weather comes the wedding season. Celebrations from different cultures with beautiful traditions will fill the coming months – what a joyful period. We bring a selection of stunning dresses in different shapes, materials and styles to help you choose the one. It is not an easy decision as it will be the most important gown of your life, registered in photographs and everyone’s memories for years to come – but we’ve got you covered! Jewellery is one of our passions and, with many new collections and revisited lines in the market, we put together some of our favourite pieces to share with you. While wellness is our motto, we scout the city to test and try the array of treatments available. This month, we enjoyed a bridal package at Dar Wafa for an authentic Moroccan experience. Travelling is known for improving physical and mental health; it can help reduce stress, uplift your mood, and consequently boost your immune system. This month, we explored all the facets of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi – a nearby destination with much to offer. Dining out is one of our favourite activities. With that in mind, we went for an Indian feast at Nirvana at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain – we encountered delectable dishes and an explosion of flavours. Our motoring test drive for November is the new BMW XM – a great car for innovative design and comfort lovers. Enjoy the nice weather to spend time outdoors and happy wedding celebrations!

Headpieces are super trendy this season, with headbands embellished with shining beads being a popular choice. This Erdem piece is a versatile option; it can be worn on your wedding day and add an eye-catching detail to your everyday outfits.

I DO!

Wedding dresses are the bride’s main concern regarding what to wear, but choosing the perfect add-ons is also part of the show. We bring some ideas!

Nothing says more about a girl’s style than the wedding band she flaunts on her ring finger until ‘death do us part’. Van Cleef & Arpels has a collection of extraordinary diamond jewels like this stunning ring.

Should a bride carry a clutch or not? Well, that is certainly a personal choice. However, if you do opt for one, go for something like this Simone Rocha at FARFETCH mini pearl heart bag – a cute addition to your romantic look.

Humour is a great way to add fun to your wedding day. Sophia Webster offers a wide range of bridal accessories with the ‘Wifey For Lifey’ slogan applied to shoes and clutches – just to put a smile on everyone’s face

Veil or no veil? Made in sheer fabric, they are traditional elements added to the gowns. They date from Roman times and were believed to protect the bride from evil spirits that could ruin her happiness. They also show modesty. This matching veil and dress are from Pronovias Privée. 18

Elegant Timekeeping

For fans of smartwatches and heritage, the new Series 9 bands Apple Watch Hermès marries elegance and sporty style. The Apple-Hermès partnership started in 2015 on the grounds of providing creations that share the same goal of combining function with aesthetics. The bands in webbing, knit and rubber demonstrate meticulous and creative work. Bridon evokes the aesthetic of an equestrian bridle, one of Hermès’ signatures. Toile H & Twill Jump features the two motifs in a webbing weave. Kilim is a waterproof rubber band inspired by Hermès jewellery. Clou de Selle pays homage to the house’s equestrian roots, an ode to their leatherworking expertise. If you are a fashion lover, this partnership is for you. Luxury accessories brand Jimmy Choo collaborates with the French house Jean Paul Gaultier on an exclusive footwear capsule. The collection fuses two creative identities founded on a shared vision of powerful, confident and glamorous femininity. The pieces have been co-designed by the houses’ Creative Directors, Sandra Choi ( Jimmy Choo) and Florence Tétier ( Jean Paul Gaultier), with a strong reference to both names’ archival legacies. Pumps, boots and mules come with eye-catching details highlighting their signatures. The relevance of the two names in the fashion world is undeniable, and seeing them holding hands for a special capsule is exciting news!

This time, Christian Louboutin embraces the Marvel universe in a limited-edition footwear and accessories collection for women, men and children. As part of Disney100, the capsule has been launched alongside an exclusive comic book introducing a superhero based on – and co-created by – Christian Louboutin himself. The Infinity Stones plot caught the designer’s attention and was used as inspiration to embed strass into two unique heels for men and women. ICYMI East Meets West

KENZO and Levi’s have joined forces and launched a capsule collection, the first-ever collaboration under Nigo, KENZO’s Creative Director, fusing the cultural heritages of the Parisian-Japanese fashion house and the American apparel company. The denim-focused proposal for women and men exemplifies the cross-pollination between historical Japanese dressmaking and classic American workwear. Composed of around 20 garments and accessories crafted mainly in Kaihara premium Japanese denim, the collection epitomises the functionality approach so important to the designer. An avid collector of historical clothing, Nigo’s archives in Japan hold a considerable catalogue of American denim pieces, including original Levi Strauss & Co. workwear created for cowboys and miners. The capsule collection is available at KENZO boutiques worldwide, in selected Levi’s stores and on kenzo.com and levi.com.

Original Creations

Many brands worldwide are affected by product piracy. To detect fake goods, Bosh has created Origify, a solution to identify luxury items using a product-specific optical fingerprint. Origify works with a special camera in a dedicated Origify hardware module. Each piece is captured with one or more images and digitally stored in a reliable cloud. Its digital fingerprint can be retrieved over its entire life cycle, allowing brand manufacturers to identify it without a doubt as long as the product’s surface structure is intact. “Every single item, even in an industrially manufactured series – like a watch’s dial or movement or a handbag or shoe surface structure – has unique features that are not repeated in the series and that we can capture with Origify,” explains Oliver Steinbis, responsible for the project in the Bosch Group. This solution won’t stop counterfeit merchandise but will certify the real deal.

nspired by an archival padlock from 1883, Tiffany Lock is an exceptional expression of the design and craftsmanship characteristic of the brand. It is an ode to the unbreakable bonds that connect us and the infinite power of love. This iconic creation now comes in a delicate version – the Tiffany Lock ROSÉ Edition has pink sapphires playing the main role. The pieces pay homage to the singer’s name and are offered in four styles with 18-carat rose gold and exceedingly rare pink sapphires. One of the rarest coloured gemstones found within the precious sapphire family, these gems were specially chosen as they symbolise love and power. Distinguished by sleek silhouettes, the capsule is offered in a classic Lock bracelet, a pair of earrings and pendants in a small or medium version. “It is such an honour to inspire a capsule collection for Tiffany,” said ROSÉ. “It’s exciting to see the iconic Lock collection reimagined with such rare gemstones and I’m excited to share this fun project with my fans and enthusiasts of the Lock collection.” Tiffany & Co. collections are available at Bahrain Jewellery Centre (BJC). @tiffanyandco @bahrainjewellerycentre

FLYING HIGH

The British jewellers, Garrard are celebrating 20 years of the Wings collection with the launch of Wings Rising – a new chapter in this iconic line. 42

www.ohlala-magazine.com

JEWELLERY Edit

R

epresenting a new era for the collection, Wings Rising is a significant evolution for this signature motif, launched in 2003. Conceived by Garrard’s all-female design team to speak confidently, woman to woman, Wings Rising takes the quintessential line in an exciting new direction. “The Wings collection has been a Garrard icon for 20 years, and that is cause for celebration. Wings Rising is the boldest representation of the Wings motif yet,” said Sara Prentice, Garrard’s Creative Director. The new designs have been redefined with pieces that emanate tenacity and empower women to rise, fuelled by the force of their own wings. Different from any Wings designs that have come before, these creations add a brand-new identity for this dynamic motif with a bold and free expression. With their graphic, ultramodern silhouettes, the new models take on a fresh symbolism that represents attributes women value in themselves: strength, independence and freedom. Garrard’s designers have updated the lifelike swoop of the original jewels to trace an abstract shape with clean lines and angular feathers. They also wanted to introduce hardstones into the Wings universe and create a brand-new signature. They

have used lapis lazuli shining with golden flecks of naturally occurring pyrite and pink opal alongside more unusual stones such as apple malachite decorated with a polka-dot pattern, golden mother-of-pearl and out-of-this-world meteorites. To capture the movement of a wing in the most unexpected of ways, they experimented with faceting the different hardstones – a technique usually reserved for gemstones. Three limited-edition Wings Rising jewels have been created with rare slices of faceted, metallic grey Gibeon meteorite. Not of this world, this billion-year-old natural wonder from space is believed to have crash-landed on Earth in prehistoric times. Because of its naturally occurring crystalline structure, the crisscrossing patterns are unique in each limited-edition jewel. Other statement Wings Rising pieces are set with angular calibré cut diamonds. The slider pendant and earrings are crafted to deliver subtle articulation, while the ring swoops across two fingers, echoing the original Wings classic design. Mini jewels in polished 18-carat white, yellow or rose gold complete the Wings Rising collection. “Jewellery is one of the most joyful forms of self-expression, and Wings Rising embodies that truth. It lifts you up and gives you the freedom to fly,” concluded Sara.

A Classic

REIMAGINED A quintessential watch only gets better when reconceptualised. The new Tonda PF models come with contemporary details in timeless designs.

44

www.ohlala-magazine.com

HAUTE Horlogerie

T

he Swiss watchmakers Parmigiani Fleurier are wellknown for their restoration know-how and aesthetic cues from the worlds of science, art and architecture. One of their most famous creations is the Tonda PF collection, which is now introducing two new models. The new watches are a two-tone rose gold and steel timepiece (a first for the collection) and a rose gold model with a ruby dial now coming with an alligator strap in the same shade. They play on contrasting colours and precious materials designed with the Tonda PF Automatic underlying spirit of refinement and elegant minimalism. Both are presented in a 36mm case for slimmer wrists. GOLD ENCOUNTERS STEEL The brand’s first Tonda PF Automatic in two-tone rose gold and steel posed a stylistic challenge: how to incorporate a contemporary two-tone look without jeopardising the innate discretion of this collection. The solution was to use the precious metal to enhance certain architectural traits of the case and bracelet. The finely knurled bezel of the Tonda PF is recreated

in 18-carat rose gold, and the supple integrated bracelet features rose gold links that accentuate its profile. POP OF COLOUR The rose gold, ruby dial Tonda PF Automatic 36mm is a sleek, minimalist timepiece now reimagined with a beautiful, rich ruby alligator strap – reproducing the glamorous tone in the dial. The Tonda PF Automatic, 36mm models mirror the aesthetics and technical mastery of the larger 40mm Tonda PF MicroRotor in a more compact case size. However, they are not equipped with a date window. With nothing superfluous to obstruct the view, the Grain d’Orge hand-guilloché decoration on the dial and the fine yet scintillating baguette-cut diamond hour markers command the attention. The two timepieces underline the versatile nature of the Tonda PF collection. They are the perfect companion to enhance ladies’ and gents’ wrists from day to night, business to leisure – they are models that validate Parmigiani Fleurier’s approach to Haute Horlogerie.

he famous shoemaker has been exploring the beauty world since 2014 with bold collections for lips, nails and eyes. The two new products that recently joined the Christian Louboutin Beauty family are Teint Fétiche Le Baume De Teint and Teint Fétiche Le Baume 4 Couleurs – an ode to flawless complexions. Teint Fétiche Le Baume De Teint is a foundation, a concealer and a balm. The texture is light and buttery soft for a promise of 12-hour comfort. It glides onto the skin in a silky light veil for an imperceptible second skin, offering natural coverage. The formula relies on an exclusive Dermaglam complex, a unique mix containing ceramides and Centella Asiatica leaf extract for comfort and long-term hydration. And because good make-up needs a perfect base, precious crystal quartz fine powder has been added to the composition for a longlasting, non-fading finish. Teint Fétiche Le Baume 4 Couleurs is a colour corrector that has been created to tackle dark circles, scarring and pigmentation. It can bring rebalancing to all types of tonal variation, with four correcting colours – all you need to cover pigmentation irregularities. Green covers redness, yellow adds light to dark circles, ruby disguises visible veins and lilac corrects dullness. It also promises comfort and luminous coverage. For the Bride, With

LOVE Get rid of all the stress of wedding planning with Dessange Paris Bahrain’s bridal package.

T

here are many preparations for a wedding, and the bride-to-be needs some relaxation and pampering before the big day. With that in mind, Dessange has prepared a special Bliss Package to celebrate the lady of the hour. It combines spa and salon services and includes a light lunch and refreshments. The treatment starts with a Moroccan bath with a clay mask in a private steam room performed by a Moroccan bath specialist. The therapy helps to remove dead skin and leave it silky and soft, which is then followed by a full-body mask. There are five body masks to choose from that cater to oily, dry, sensitive, dull and stressed skin types. The products used are from the Dessange and Pevonia brands. After the Moroccan bath, the client is guided to the treatment room for a Relaxing Organic Sensory massage. The therapist will run a consultation to understand the customer’s needs and let them choose their preferred Pevonia massage oil. The treatment aims to relax muscles, reduce stress and moisturise and nourish skin. At the end of the full-body relaxing massage, the therapist will continue with the Dessange Ultimate Glow Facial, which is recommended for all skin types and ladies looking for radiant skin. It includes face steam and extraction if required. It’s a deepclean facial, yet very relaxing and effective. The Dessange team recommend having this package one week or at least four days before the wedding. When the spa session finishes, the therapist will guide the client to the relaxation room for a light lunch and refreshments. The spa experience is then followed by hair treatment and scalp massage. At Dessange, any hair treatment is accompanied by a consultation to decide which product best suits the client’s hair type. There is a variety of options for a personalised experience. The Bliss Package ends with a spa pedicure and manicure done by Dessange’s professional nail technicians. The duration of this indulgent package is six hours, and it is priced at BD135.500. For more information or to make a booking, please call Dessange Paris Bahrain on 1771 3999. @dessangebahrain

BRIDAL SHOWER À LA MARRAKESH The wedding day is very special. However, the days before the ‘I do’ should also be filled with memorable moments. Fernanda Langhammer visited Dar Wafa to try one of their bridal packages, and left ready to renew her vows.

W

e are well-served with spas in Bahrain. However, I doubt that any of them offer an authentic Morrocan experience as Dar Wafa does. The building itself is like a piece of Marrakesh that has been placed right in one of the busiest areas of Adliya. Its ochre-orange walls and big, bright blue wooden door set the vibe. After stepping inside, I felt transported – it was like a portal that took me to a cosy and welcoming Moroccan villa, someone’s home, Wafa’s house (Dar means house, and it is not a coincidence). The interior is full of character; every corner had something to catch my attention, colourful tiles on the floor and unique objects decorating the space. Dar Wafa has different areas; on the right, you find the hair and nail room with comfy light pink chairs, funky cactus wallpaper and big arched windows with intricate patterns letting the natural light enter the space. The typical circles and triangles in symmetric and repetitive ways seen in Moroccan architecture are spotted everywhere. If you move forward from the reception, you find a lovely living room (with a classical piano) that connects the Hammam chambers, massage rooms and changing area and also leads to the outside space. A pool with groovy floaters, loungers and stairs leading to a massive rooftop – perfect for events, birthdays and bridal showers. If you have never been to Marrakesh, visiting Dar Wafa will give you a glimpse of what to expect.

www.ohlala-magazine.com

55

This month’s issue is dedicated to weddings, so I tried one of their bridal packages. Dar Wafa offers tailored bridal showers, always adding a Morrocan touch. The packages are customised according to the number of people and preferred services. According to Ouafa Moussi, the owner of Dar Wafa, in Morocco, before a wedding, the bride, her sisters and her girlfriends go to the local Hammam for a joyful day. They bathe, sing and dance together, a ritual that has been going on for generations and is still popular to this day – and she wants to share this tradition with the brides in Bahrain. I am married but never had a bridal shower, so I was excited to be pampered like a bride at least once. It was great to see how happy and in harmony the staff were working together; they complemented the vibrant ambience. Modeste, the hairdresser, started my beautification journey by applying a hair treatment to my locks with Lealeen Caviar Hair Mask for deep moisturising. I was then guided by Asma, the Hammam therapist, to one of the chambers. The space was covered in brown and green tiles with a tap and two brass buckets; it felt really authentic! Hammam is all about cleansing, but each place does it with its own twist. Asma explained that she was going to perform the Signature Dar Wafa Hammam. The first step was to remove body lotion and perfume with water. It’s important to highlight for those who have never experienced this treatment that you only wear disposable underwear during the whole process, and a lot of water and washing are included with moments of standing and lying on a tiled bed. Asma then applied Moroccan black soap to my entire body, left the room and turned the steam on for about five minutes. After the soap was washed away, she scrubbed my skin with a loofah to remove dead cells (my last Hammam was a few years ago, so there were lots of them to extract). My body was cleaned with water again, and it was time for a sugar scrub that smelled delicious; more water to remove the scrub. She then put

a mask on my face and Moroccan Sokla (a paste made with oils and small exfoliation granules) on my whole body; these were also washed away after a while. All the products used are from the Jardin Flamingo brand with aker fassi (an ingredient made with dried poppy petals and pomegranate rind known for their moisturising, softening and anti-toxin properties). I left the Hammam space feeling super light as if a heavy weight had been lifted from my body. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a transformative experience. I then moved to the massage room. Pamela, the masseuse, told me I would experience a hot stone massage with a Dar Wafa twist. The room was dark as the natural light from outside had faded – perfect timing for an indulgent moment. She started with my back and left some hot stones on my spine while moving to the other parts, with a mix of movements both with and without the stones. The benefit of the heat from the smooth, round rocks is to get deep into the skin and muscles, relaxing and relieving tension. As a runner, this type of massage was spot on for me. The twist at the end came in the form of very hot towels embracing my limbs – one word for the feeling: wow! Pure relaxation. After the treatment, I got back into my clothes and met Modeste again for a blow dry. My tresses were super soft and, in no time, my usually curly hair was straight and bouncy! For a personalised touch, brides receive a special bridal basket with pink slippers and towels, a lovely white bride robe for the lady of the hour and pink ones for her girlfriends. If you want more, they also offer catering options, entertainment such as belly dancers and a lady DJ, flowers, décor and giveaway gifts. If you are planning a memorable bridal shower, Dar Wafa is the place to go! For more information or to book the bridal shower of your dreams, please call Dar Wafa on 3222 9925. @darwafaspa

HERE COMES

THE BRIDE The wedding season is open – it’s time to dive into the world of stunning dresses and white accessories.

T

he weather is getting cooler, and we can already hear the tintinnabulation of the bells. The wedding day is mostly dedicated to the star of the show: the bride! To celebrate the dame of the day, we bring the latest trends in wedding dresses and shoes. Choosing the right gown for yourself (or helping someone pick theirs) is an important task. They will be immortalised in pictures and everyone’s memories. Here are some tips that can guide you in selecting the perfect number: • Shop early but not too early. This tactic will give you time to explore all possibilities. • Stick to your/the bride’s personality. If you like low-key styles, look for dresses that have this characteristic. However, opt for an elaborate dress if you have a bubbly nature. You can also see this event as your red carpet-moment. If so, go big with no regrets!

72

www.ohlala-magazine.com

• Consider the location of your celebration. For events in hotels and closed spaces, pick a dress with a train and embellishments – they need to be as grand as your reception. If you have a garden celebration, A-line or mermaid silhouettes with lace details would be spot on. For a beach wedding, consider the wind and heat, so go for a flowy and light gown. A tulle skirt will look amazing on a sunny day. • If you are not getting ready at the venue, opt for a fabric that travels well and won’t end up all wrinkly. • Choose the height of your heels before selecting your dress. • Practice sitting, walking and dancing in your dress. If you don’t plan to wear something different during the party, go for something comfortable. • Look for details that will highlight your best assets but also something that will look good in photos – these are the things that will guard the memories of this special day. Posing with your dress is a clever way to see how it will look in the photos and unlock the best angles. In the following pages, you will find inspirational gowns!

Ball gowns are the preferred style for extra drama and fairytale weddings. However, when thinking of volume, it doesn’t have to be applied only to skirts. Puffy sleeves, layers and frill details create an eye-catching effect that will make your dress memorable with the desired awe-inspiring impact.

Dresses made with layers of tulle are graceful and sophisticated. The delicate fabric creates a soft, dreamy effect that complements various dress silhouettes. When thinking of tulle, voluminous gowns must come to mind, but not necessarily. A simple neutral base can be the background for this sheer textile – when folded in intricate ways, it can create an intriguing effect.

It’s easy to impress when the dress is over the top – volume, frills and lace contribute to a jawdropping reaction. However, many women prefer to go with the less is more motto. A plain, satin fabric will deliver this effect. But that does not mean you can’t invest in an exciting silhouette with an eye-catching detail or smart cut.

Lengths of fabric at the back of a dress add a grand effect to any gown – they can be super long or just a bit below the hem at the back. ALEXANDRA VON CANISIUS

THE FUTURE OF

RETAIL We are all about fashion, beauty and luxury, and there is no one better to discuss these subjects, plus retailing, than Alexandra von Canisius, Retail Director & Head of Retail for Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain Chalhoub Group Managed Companies. She takes us on a journey into this exciting and beautiful world.

“ ...when we look at a multi-brand concept store, it is a very complex business model, as we focus on the tiniest details, precision and perfection across all categories to connect and engage with our clients.” — Alexandra von Canisius OHLALA – Can you briefly tell us about your career experience? Alexandra von Canisius – I have been working in luxury retail for over 20 years, having lived in London, Dubai, Vienna and Toronto while managing fashion and jewellery houses such as Dior, Cartier, Bulgari, Harrods, Holt Renfrew and now, Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain. After graduating with an economics degree from McGill University in Montreal, followed by a few years working in finance, I decided to focus on what I love and am passionate about – luxury retail. I was offered a role at Harrods in London, where I started as a buyer and then worked my way up as a senior manager – after which I left for Cartier to manage the Old Bond Street location for several years before being headhunted in 2005 to the Middle East as retail manager of Bulgari and then as Flagship Director of Christian Dior. After this, I embarked on an entrepreneurial career and launched a series of multi-brand concept stores in Austria. However, I missed being part of a larger organisational structure in the luxury retail world, which was so part of my DNA that I returned to the industry to continue my career leading luxury department stores in the region. OHLALA – Fashion and beauty are part of your DNA. What attracted you to work in these fields? Alexandra – Luxury, fashion and beauty have always been an area that I have been passionate about. As a child of diplomats, I was raised to believe that I should study to become a lawyer, investment banker or work in the foreign service. A common misperception back in the days when traditional careers were viewed more positively than embarking on pursuing one’s passion and dreams. What attracted me to fashion and beauty is my love of aesthetics, creativity, art and culture. They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When I look at a beautiful work of contemporary art, an architectural masterpiece or I listen to a piano concerto by Rachmaninoff, this awakens in me the same emotion and passion as when I view an exquisite couture gown or the precision and beauty in a complicated timepiece or fine jewellery creation. All these are different ways of expressing oneself and finding beauty in all aspects of life, which touches the very essence of being human. It is also about being part of an industry that connects with people’s inner emotions and dreams and gives them happiness and a way to express themselves in an ever-changing world. OHLALA – You are currently the Retail Director & Head of Retail for Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain. Can you tell us what is the concept of a luxury multi-brand store? Alexandra – The idea of a ‘classical department store’ as we knew the term 20 years ago vs. today’s luxury multi-brand conceptual department

store is very different. Today’s focus is on experiential retailing across all touchpoints and categories, where the aim is to create a dream-like universe where a client can come in and immerse themselves into the world of the brand. We are not in the business of selling clothes. The word ‘product’ should not even be in the retail vocabulary. The aim is to connect with our clients on a deep emotional level, which awakens all five senses. So, when we look at a multi-brand concept store, it is a very complex business model, as we focus on the tiniest details, precision and perfection across all categories to connect and engage with our clients. This means we focus on the entire client journey: before a client enters the store to their journey throughout the store, the connection that our teams build with our clients, the verbiage we use in the selling ceremony, to the curation of the brand assortment as well as the after-sales experience, clientelling and follow up. It is a business where the partnership between store teams, buyers, merchants, marketing, PR, back of house, operations, supply chain and visual merchandising work in unison hand in hand, with the sole focus of engaging with our clients and creating unforgettable, memorable experiences for them to foster loyalty and deep emotional connections. OHLALA – What do you aim for with the selection of brands and styles that you carry? Alexandra – The curated assortment of the store follows this same goal – it is our mission to fully understand our client. We analyse our clients’ preferences, needs and shopping habits while respecting cultural norms and offering a selection tailor-made for the market in which we are. The result is a carefully selected brand matrix across all categories (women’s, men’s, kids’, beauty, home, gifting, footwear, accessories and fine jewellery) that caters to our clients, their various age groups, income brackets and preferences, all of which are presented in an experiential environment where connection and relationship building is key. OHLALA – How important is it to mix well-known international brands with regional talents? Do you think this is one of Saks Bahrain’s differentials? Alexandra – Definitely. This is where Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain differs from any other Saks store worldwide. Alongside our extensive international brand portfolio, our mission is to promote local brands and regional talents. We do this by supporting the local community and offering designers a chance to display their collections in-store, whether a pop-up during Ramadan, an exclusive capsule or a permanent shop-inshop. There is so much talent in the region, and it is exciting to discover them and give them a platform to showcase their work for international visibility and help promote their success. www.ohlala-magazine.com

OHLALA

Voices

OHLALA – How important is it to build a relationship with clients? What are the strategies that make them come back? Alexandra – To be honest, this is the most important aspect of any business and life in general. If you don’t connect with people – be it your colleagues, clients, families, neighbours, communities and all cultures, religions and demographics – then you have missed a crucial element in what makes us human beings. This aspect of connection and relationship building is one of the main reasons I am so passionate about the luxury retail industry. We are in the business of serving and connecting with our people. This fosters loyalty, dedication and retention, which leads to the success of any business. At Saks Fifth Avenue, our clients and teams are our main strengths. We have customers who come just to say hello and have a coffee due to the warmth and connection they feel with the store and our teams. And this is not about the brand matrix and assortment – this is about people and how we connect and touch their inner emotions. That’s generally what life is all about. OHLALA – How do you see the future of the retail industry? And how does it affect the Bahraini market? Alexandra – I am super excited about the future of retail, especially in this region – also, with the plans in Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the opening of

the market – it’s a defining time for the luxury and retail business, and it is great to be part of this transformation. We are living during a time when there is a general acceleration in tech, AI, data, experience, omnichannel retailing, synergies between classic and futuristic visions and an openness and readiness to challenge the status quo. Although we are also quite dependent on our Bahraini community and our KSA neighbours, Bahrain is unique; many visitors from the region continue to spend their holidays and weekends on the island. With the increase in investment, new real estate developments, malls opening, as well as cultural activities and entertainment options, Bahrain is a pillar destination for the future. In terms of retail, there is also so much room for growth compared to other countries where retail may already be saturated. OHLALA – How long have you been living in Bahrain, and what do you like most about the island so far? Alexandra – I arrived in Bahrain nine months ago and have already been captivated by the island feel, the warmth and friendliness of the people and the hospitality I have received here. What makes Bahrain special is definitely its people – and for me, that’s a priority in work, business and life.

SAADIYAT ISLAND

ISLAND LIFE OHLALA was invited to explore all the facets of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi and Fernanda Langhammer headed to this multicultural destination to check out what it has to offer.

I

must confess that when the invitation to travel to Saadiyat Island came to my inbox, I had no idea where or what it was. After some quick research, I discovered it was most definitely a place to be visited. Located in Abu Dhabi between the city centre and Yas Island and only 20km from the airport, Saadiyat Island is a naturally occurring islet, home to pristine white sandy beaches, azure waters and a vast range of wildlife, such as fast gazelles and Hawksbill sea turtles, co-habiting with culture, leisure and luxury. The meaning of its name is happiness, and it didn’t take long for me to understand why. Sustainability is quite a trend, but at Saadiyat Island, this concept is taken extremely seriously. No motorsports are allowed, no plastic straws are used

in restaurants, biodegradable guest amenities (one innovative solution is cornstarch-based) have been implemented, and a series of tactics is in place to entirely eliminate plastic bottles (some hotels gift their guests with stylish reusable water bottles), amongst other initiatives. LUSH STAY The island offers six luxurious resorts to choose from: Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas, Rixos Premium, Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Nurai Island. I stayed at Jumeirah and the laid-back luxury flair, something that this brand knows well, was easily felt as soon as I walked in. www.ohlala-magazine.com

LIVING SPACE JUMEIRAH AT SAADIYAT ISLAND LOBBY

BATHROOM

The ample lobby is bright and faces the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf. Hanging from the ceiling, hand-blown blue Bohemian crystals in the shape of jellyfish and water droplets (with more than 100 of them) seemed like an extension of the sea – an immense and lovely installation. The décor was minimal, with comfy sofas and tables in blue and sandy colours, exactly what you want when looking for a beach resort – modern sophistication without over-the-top furnishing. My first impression of the hotel regarding their staff couldn’t have been better. Ahmed, the front desk agent, welcomed me with a big smile and helped me with a smooth check-in and a comprehensive explanation of the hotel facilities. He then asked lovely Deisy, one of the concierges, to help me find my room; she also showed me how to use all the modern accessories. My room was the Ocean One Bedroom Suite on the same floor as the lobby. It had a big living space with two balconies, an ample sofa and a round dining table. A big sliding panel separated this area from the bedroom, composed of a comfy king-size bed, a round lounger (circular elements are one of the latest trends in interior design), a coffee machine and all the expected amenities. The bathroom had a big tub, two sinks and, to my delight, a rain shower. But if you are looking for extreme luxury, you can stay in one of the private villas. They come in two, three, four and five bedrooms, all with their own pool and outside space for gatherings. At this property, you also find a welcoming 24-hour gym with Technogym equipment and a spa offering 15 treatment rooms with one of the largest Hammam facilities in the city.

JUMEIRAH AT SAADIYAT ISLAND POOL WHITE RESTAURANT

REGIONAL

Escapes

Jumeirah offers delectable eateries, and I noticed that not only hotel guests but outside diners also go there to enjoy the high-end restaurant options. I dined in three of them: Mare Mare, offering an Italian menu; Tean, dedicated to Levantine cuisine; and White, where breakfast (with one of the most expansive spreads I have ever encountered, from freshly prepared pancakes and flaky pastries to an exciting avocado toast station and refined cold cuts selection such as beef bresaola and smoked pepper mackerel. I would go back just for that!), brunch and dinner buffets are available. The quality of ingredients and beautiful presentation was consistent in all of them. However, if I have to highlight only two things about Jumeirah, it would be its well-trained and amazing staff and the beach. I could live there! The pristine water, white fluffy sand, comfortable sun loungers and refreshing water brought in cute mini coolers would be enough to keep me happy for days. DINING SCENE I guess one of the best places to find an array of restaurants would be the Mamsha al Saadiyat promenade. We went there for a walk to embrace this amazing beachfront community and to have lunch in a place that I can securely say has to be the best Lebanese restaurant that I have ever eaten at in my life: Beirut Sur Mer. The eatery is located at Mamsha al Saadiyat and has impressive colourful décor with arches in the ceiling covered with vine-style branches and chandeliers where pinkish faux grapes embrace the light bulbs. The walls are covered with delicate flowered wallpaper, while the blue and pink counter and chairs and white tiled walls give a cohesive effect to the whole layout. Lively and absolutely stunning ambience. I am glad we were in a group, and we got to try a variety of sharing dishes. Hummus, tabbouleh, moutabal, olives, fattoush, kibbeh nayyeh (raw meat with spices served in a ball shape) and my favourite, Maltouteh – www.ohlala-magazine.com

cured yoghurt, thyme, pistachios, fried olives, dried cranberries, hazelnuts, walnuts and mint, mixed with soft bread, it was a mouthful of soft and crunchy textures with a unique explosion of flavours. We also had Sawda, a popular chicken liver dish that at Beirut Sur Mer is sautéed and made with the restaurant’s special fig salsa with molasses. The other meat option was the Basha Bil Karaz composed of grilled kofta on a cherry chutney salsa. The perfect marriage of ingredients is definitely a strong trait in this restaurant and what makes this place a must-try. The sweets were Kunafa, with its stretchy cheese filling and semolina dough, accompanied by Pashmak, the Middle Eastern cotton candy; Millefuille Beiruty made with crispy phyllo dough and clotted cream; and, the best of them all, Halawat El Jibin or sweet cheese rolls, it was my first time trying them, and they were not overly sweet with a soft texture and a touch of pistachio crunchiness. For French cuisine enthusiasts, La Salle, located at Saadiyat Beach Club, offers a high-end experience. The menu also includes Italian and Spanish staples for a sophisticated Mediterranean feast. We had a delightful lunch at this eatery. Our starters were Arancini, the popular fried rice balls filled with cheese that at La Salle have a Sicilian influence with saffron. They were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, yum! The Crevette Pil Pil is a simple Spanish dish composed of Carabinero prawns and smoked Pil Pil sauce (made with garlic and chilli infused in hot olive oil). However, the star appetiser was the Aubergine à la Parmesane with layers of aubergine, ricotta, cheese and tomato sauce – a creamy combination that melted in my mouth, absolutely delicious! My main course was Le Risotto Acquarello, my go-to comfort food, made with mushrooms, truffle oil, pecorino foam and peas. The risotto rice was cooked to perfection and the right amount of truffle oil was added for a beautiful spoonful. The texture was velvety, and the flavours were spot on.

ABRAHAMIC FAMILY HOUSE SAADIYAT BEACH GOLF CLUB

THINGS TO DO So, as you can see, Saadiyat Island is the perfect destination for a resortlike holiday and excellent food. However, that’s not even the best part: the unique cultural district is home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Abrahamic Family House and Manarat Al Saadiyat, offering exciting artistic expressions and an educational vision. With more to come, such as the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opening in 2025. Our visit to Louvre Abu Dhabi was supervised by Vivian, a super energetic guide who took us to the key pieces on display at the museum, telling us their stories and highlighting fun facts. It was not my first time, but I can say that this visit was way more interesting. The Abrahamic Family House is a centre that promotes dialogue and knowledge exchange with peaceful coexistence at its core. Designed by wellknown Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye, it consists of a church, a

mosque and a synagogue. The three houses of worship are the same size, but each carries their unique symbols in the architecture. There is an exhibit that showcases videos of the different expressions of faith; they touched me more than I expected and left me with a deep sense of reflection. Manarat Al Saadiyat is a contemporary space that's home to exhibitions, events, workshops and an art studio – an ample area where art and its expressions are celebrated. If a cultural scene is not what you are looking for, Saadiyat Beach Golf Club offers a fun experience for those who want to learn the game or for old hands who wish to play on the club’s 18-hole course or driving range. Our little entourage was invited for a session with Matt, one of the golf coaches. Well-humoured, he asked us to hit the little ball with the club giving our best performance. He then gave us some tips and, to my surprise, the simple technique he asked us to use made a big difference. I actually hit the ball with enough strength to make it roll away. I was so proud of myself that I am considering starting to play. If you are looking for a fun activity, I highly recommend it. Besides having two restaurants, La Salle and Safina, the Saadiyat Beach Club also offers an array of facilities, such as an infinity pool, white-sand beach, gym, plunge pool, Jacuzzi and gents’ salon. You can purchase a day pass and enjoy the party atmosphere. If you are looking for a weekend getaway, planning a nearby honeymoon or even just fancy going somewhere extraordinary but do not want to spend too many hours in a plane, Saadiyat Island is the perfect destination. It has it all and a little more. For more information, please visit https://saadiyatisland.ae/ @saadiyatae

A FEAST FIT FOR

ROYALTY Nuanced flavours, impeccable service and a luxurious ambience are what Melissa Nazareth experienced at Nirvana at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.

any of my colleagues and friends who are not Indian and have dined at Nirvana speak highly of it. After this gastronomic journey, I can confidently say that this bijou venue at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain will be loved by both, Indian and international palates alike. An opulent setup with crimson hues, silk drapes, wood-carved panels, golden accents and paisley-printed upholstery, reminiscent of an ancient Indian palace, welcomed us. The classical Indian instrumental music playing in the background complemented the vibe. In Sanskrit, there’s a saying, ‘athithi devo bhava’, which means a guest is akin to God. The adage underpins the importance of hospitality, a virtue that’s visibly ingrained in the service at Nirvana. A team of people waited on us, catering to our every need. We were guided to our seats and selected a table in the main dining area. However, I noticed many guests seated in the private sections, with partitions studded around the central space. Minutes later, Manoj, one of our servers, brought a basket of poppadoms – the plain and pepper-infused varieties – and a tray with mint and yoghurt chutney, mango chutney and pickle as dips. While we whetted our appetites, I observed the tandoors, or ovens, which can be seen from the dining area through a window. Our grills and naans were being cooked there and, soon after, arrived at our table. Tashtari-E-Tandoor, a platter of chicken tikka, lamb kebab and grilled prawns, was the perfect start to our royal feast. Each of the components was outstanding. Redolent with cumin, chilli and other spices, the meats were succulent and cooked to perfection. The prawns, bouncy and seared on the edges, were rendered flavourful with a delicate marinade that didn’t steal their spotlight.

Jheenga Til Tinka, deep-fried prawns served on skewers, had a nice crunchy texture from the batter, which was sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds. The sweet chilli sauce dip was nothing like the ones available in the market. Rich and fruity, with a jam-like consistency, it cut through the fried goodness. The good ol’ Punjabi Samosa plate came with mini-sized parcels of happiness, stuffed with a moreish potato and pea filling. The pastry, flaky and crisp on the edges, hid a surprise – golden raisins – a pop of sweetness when you least expect it. This was served with a tart tamarind chutney, which I overdid until I was uncontrollably salivating – who could blame me! I was in need of a drink and was recommended a trio of lassis - mango, sugar and mint and spices. They were exceedingly refreshing, an antidote to Bahrain’s extended summer. They weren’t too thick, just the right consistency to wash down our delicious spread with every sip. It was now time for the main course – a selection of luscious curries with fluffy naans. Our naan basket, or Milijuli Tokari, had the plain, buttered and garlicky varieties. Hot out of the oven, they soaked in the gravy as I mopped the Murgi Makhanwali or butter chicken, which Manoj told us is Nirvana’s signature dish. Using tomatoes as the base, it was infused with light spices and had a creamy taste. I’ll be honest; I would have liked it to be slightly spicier. In fact, you can request for any dish to be more or less spicy, and the nice people at Nirvana will willingly oblige. I will remember this when I return. Whenever I’ve eaten Indian food at a restaurant, I’ve observed that the curries are more in keeping with North Indian recipes, and so, I was elated when our server presented Erha Kari, prawns swimming in a creamy coconut gravy with pungent undertones of mustard and a tempering of earthy curry leaves. We were told it has South Indian influences, but it tasted wonderful with the Northie (an Indian slang for Northerner) naan. Our next curry was a vegetarian one but quite the contender to its meaty

94

predecessors. Made with black lentils and red kidney beans that are slowcooked with spices, butter and cream, Dal Makhani gets its silken texture and intense flavour because it’s simmered for hours. I ate it like a soup, and it felt like a warm hug. Rice is a staple in many Indian cuisines, so we had to do a rice dish. Our chicken biryani was cooked dum style, where the pot is sealed to create pressure so the contents cook slowly, rendering them even more flavourful. The chicken, juicy and tender, was the perfect accompaniment to the grain that had taken on its flavours. The many spices at play composed a symphony so nuanced that I was lost for many moments after every bite. The show stopper was Chef Mahipal Singh’s Raan-E-Mastan, a goat shank that sat majestically in a pool of the most flavourful curry I’ve ever eaten. Raan refers to the leg part and Mastan, I’m guessing, is derived from masti, meaning fun. This dish was, indeed, fun to devour, with the meat falling off the bone – it’s slow-cooked for hours. It isn’t on the menu but is part of a selection of special dishes served only on weekends. Another weekend wonder we tried was Masala Chai Brûlée, a spin on the classic dessert. I could actually taste spiced tea, but very subtly. The acidic berries on the top balanced the sweetness. We also had Teen Tarke Ke Mithas, a trio of gulab jamun – a cake-like sphere made with milk solids and soaked in sugar syrup; rasmalai, a similar treat but spongier and infused with milk; and kulfi, an ice cream with nuts. Nirvana, the word, refers to a state of ultimate contentment, and that’s how I felt when I left. As we Indians say, pet full, dil khush (a full stomach means a happy heart)! BMW XM

AFTER FOUR-AND-A-HALF DECADES, BMW HAS FINALLY RELEASED A NEW BMW M ORIGINAL IN THE FORM OF THE LATEST XM.

up, even when the car is in motion. At the rear, the vertically stacked dual exhaust system is neatly integrated into the rear apron. The LED taillights include a three-gill lighting feature and flicker like a fire when on. Finishing off the exterior in style are the prominent diffuser, adaptive dampers and limited-slip rear differential.

EXTERIOR The moment we laid eyes on the new XM, we were taken by its bold shape and unique design elements. At the front, the large kidney grille features horizontal slats surrounded by an ambient lighting feature and equipped with high gloss satin chrome (black). There is also a gold trim option. This visually expressive front end houses two headlight units, typical of BMW's luxury segment models. Hinting at the sporty prowess of the vehicle are large air intakes located at each side of the front bumper. The distinctive lines of the XM continue at the flanks, underscored by the gold trim running from bonnet to boot, a feature that pays tribute to the original M1. We loved the shape of the competition-style sideview mirrors, along with the M-specific wheels that come complete with weighted centrepieces. This ensures the BMW logos remain the right way

INTERIOR Entering the XM, we were welcomed by comfortable and supportive multi-adjustable sports seats with illuminated XM embossed logos on the headrests. The interior's exceptional blend of luxury and sportiness is combined with a solid build quality and houses a driverorientated cockpit. The interior roof features a prism-style design that lights up when the car is opened, as does the ambient lighting located under the interior door handles, the various air vents and the front speakers of the Harman Kardon surround sound system. All lighting turns red when the Sport mode is engaged. A sports steering wheel with carbon fibre panels, aluminium pedals and M-trim seat belts are all included in the cabin. The rear offers plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for three adults to travel comfortably, with plenty of storage options, numerous USB ports and dual-zone climate control.

MW M GmbH have released their much anticipated, allnew BMW XM. This is the brand's first BMW M original since the BMW M1, unveiled in the late '70s, and their first ever high-performance car with an electrified drive system. OHLALA spent an unforgettable day in this novel creation for an exciting test drive.

The 527-litre storage capacity of the luggage compartment can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded down, making the XM practical for everyday family usage. This area also features a 12V socket, along with a designer bag holding the hybrid charging cables. INFOTAINMENT & TECHNOLOGY The BMW XM is equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, delivering the M-specific multi-sensory vehicle experience, iDrive. This system operates through a large BMW Curved Display consisting of a 12.3-inch information display (diagonal) and a 14.9-inch control display. We found this easy-to-navigate operating system very responsive and exceptionally helpful in negotiating the numerous options. A state-ofthe-art Head-Up display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also fitted as standard. PERFORMANCE & SAFETY Press the start button on the new XM, and a distinct sound composed by the critically acclaimed Hans Zimmer (composer and music producer) is what you'll hear. He had a hand in creating the soundtrack for this outstanding SUV. The XM's engine is a classically high-revving 4.4-litre V8 with cuttingedge M TwinPower Turbo technology. Combined with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with torque convertor, this effective combination offers three operating modes and a full-time, four-wheel drive experience.

104 www.ohlala-magazine.com

The M HYBRID drive system of the XM delivers an overall combined output of 653hp. The SUV accelerates from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.3 seconds and has an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h. We found the drive quality and responsiveness of the vehicle to be nothing less than exceptional, especially in Sport mode. Fortunately, the designers have included a high-performance braking system capable of taming the abundance of power. The M HYBRID button on the centre console is used to select one of three operating modes: HYBRID, ELECTRIC and eCONTROL. The eco-friendly ELECTRIC setting allows cruising with zero local emissions at speeds up to 140km/h and over a maximum distance of 82km to 88km. BMW have fitted a full suite of driver assistance features as standard including Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Evasion Assistant, Alertness Assist and a Speed Limit Info System. Additional advanced features are available as optional extras. OUR VERDICT BMW have successfully created a super SUV jam-packed with luxurious elements, cutting-edge technology and high-performance capabilities. GOOD LUCK!

Weddings are full of customs and conventions, and some of us take them very seriously. We bring a list of the most popular and not-so-well-known myths and their reasons. If you are a superstitious person, it’s good to take a look at this list to make sure you start your wedded life on the ‘right foot’. But if you aren’t, you can read this compilation of fun facts to understand some of the traditions. • Most of us think that rain on a festive day is something negative (in the Middle East, it would be extra unlucky as it rarely pours in this part of the world), but it is said that rain on a wedding day is a sign of luck. It cleanses paths, renews nature and symbolises fertility. • This is a very unusual one, but folklore says that if you find a spider crawling on your wedding dress, it means that you will have a successful and prosperous marriage. • One of the oldest traditions followed by most people to this day, is that the groom shouldn’t see the bride before the wedding as it can bring bad luck. This custom is believed to have originated when arranged marriages were a common practice. It was feared that if the groom saw the bride, he could change his mind and run away. 106 www.ohlala-magazine.com

• The belief behind showering newlyweds with rice is that it would bring fertility to the couple. Nowadays, the tradition persists, but instead of rice, dried flower petals or bubbles serve as a good eco-friendly option. • In some cultures, wearing pearls on your wedding day is said to bring misfortune. They are seen as tears of the sea, which is directly connected to sadness – hence not a good omen – mainly if they are part of the wedding ring. • Why do most celebrations have bridesmaids? To confuse and deter jealous spirits. Historically, they would also wear white to mislead the evil presence and keep the bride safe. • Not sure what to get your friends for their wedding? No matter what, stay away from knives (even if the couple loves cooking together); they are a sign of bad luck as they represent broken relationships. • And last one: wedding rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand because Ancient Romans believed that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart. They even called it vena amoris (vein of love), but this vein doesn’t really exist.
