EDITOR’S LETTER

It’s sad that every year, summer comes round, and I feel compelled to write something like this. I always hope, in a naive, optimistic way, that in the past year something would change. That 2018 would be the year we’d finally start believing in the clichéd self-love and female empowerment captions you see plastered over Instagram. That we’d stop giving ourselves a hard time over diets, workout routines and counting the calories in fruit. That we’d start to fight back against a world that is constantly telling us to change. And yet, for all the #thisgirlcan and #strongnotskinny messages that have woven into the fabric of social media, I feel we still have so far to come in our approach to health. Read on to find out more about the Keto Diet that has been making waves in the medical field alongside the headlines. We’ve organised this month’s issue around a loose set of ideas about fashion at this

particular moment - though all the clothing is available right now, it’s not exactly “summer” dressing because it’s more than a seasonal approach. It’s about the spirit of individual beauty, which cannot be broken. Iconic fashionista exclusively talks to Ohlala and proves that you can do whatever you set your mind to, even if that means curating something new and outside what people have deemed the ‘norm’.

I hope that your holidays or staycations have been jam packed of laughter and fun memories, but, whatever the weather go forward and be fabulous!

JAYNE GREEN talks exclusively to renowned fashion icon INGIE CHALHOUB about her eponymous label

INGIE Paris and why you should be lusting over the INGIE Paris Winter 2018 collection.

24 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Elegance
26 www.ohlala-magazine.com

ell us why being ‘bold in glamour, full-length and sparklingly alive’ is synonymous with your brands’ ethos.

The INGIE Paris woman is international, she travels the world and she is knowledgeable about fashion, sophisticated and refined. Moreover, her allure makes the difference, as she is stylish and stands-out with her femininity and her individuality. She is glamorous! The beginning is always a good place to start… do you remember when you first became aware of fashion, or at least when ‘style’ became something you gravitated towards? My initial love for fashion and sense of style came from my mother. She has always been my mentor, inspiration and role model. I learnt the simplicity, yet sophistication of beauty from her at a young age, she was always perfectly dressed whatever the occasion, from morning to evening. Looking at her and having her as my closest point of reference, I have learned and enjoyed the ‘art of dressing up’ and the magic that clothes can bring to our lives. I was also lucky enough to be raised and educated in France, where fashion is a deep-rooted aspect of the culture and its international profile. With a world-class French education and surrounded by such a rich tapestry of haute-couture and French savoir-faire, I was able to develop my fashion dream and envision my life as a fashion designer.

DESIGNER Focus

Tell us about your INGIE Paris Winter 2018 collection. The INGIE Paris Winter 2018 collection is a mix of inspirations. It channels a bold yet implicit femininity that celebrates modern women and their individuality. Key colours of the collection include a flamboyant red, cobalt blue and gold as well as black and blue hues. The collection incorporates multiple textural effects with movement, dexterity and structure whilst celebrating shining materials, juxtaposing opacity and transparency, using “moucharabieh” guipure or floral embroidery with sequins. The pure essence of the female wardrobe, the evening dress, remains at the heart of this collection. Short or extra-long, INGIE Paris uses couture elements such as bustiers, split corsets or fitted necklines, accompanied by abundant volumes of fabric, puffed volutes and innovative materials, all play a highly visual game.

The Middle East market is very fashion-driven. How does it differ in comparison to other fashion cultures around the world?

The world is an extensive melting pot of cultures and through the wealth of information provided from the digital world in particular; the boundaries that once existed have now been reduced. I am continuously inspired on my travels and experience of other cultures and people all over the world are becoming more appreciative of different cultures and embracing this in fashion. INGIE Paris is an international brand and travel, social media and fashion all have an impact on style evolution and people should embrace different cultures wherever they are in the world. What is the ultimate trend for you that will always be timeless? Today’s luxury is about being unique and timeless with a touch of glamour and so the INGIE Paris gown will always be the ultimate trend for our collections. Our gowns are unique and captivating, always keeping in mind the desires of each INGIE Paris woman.

How do you relax?

I enjoy travelling, reading, spending quality time with my family and friends. I also enjoy visiting art galleries and capturing inspiration from daily details for my future collections and to free my mind from the daily routine.

What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to the fashion industry and how do you overcome some of the challenges this industry brings?

Every industry has its challenges and the fashion industry is no different. I don’t have any peeves as such, and find all of these daily challenges, as positive opportunities to evolve and build the brand. There is nothing like preparing a collection for fashion week with the studio team; the endless nights perfecting a waistline or deciding on the length of a hem; all of the teamwork that goes into preparing a show with model castings and fittings, and music and finally post show, working with incredibly talented photographers and stylists to imagine my vision as a look-book or a fashion shoot. Every step of a collection’s process is immensely rewarding and full of excitement and promise, and the only way to enjoy it fully, is to be positive.

You have gained international recognition as a fashion innovator. Do you feel pressure to maintain such a title?

Of course, having been in this industry for many years, I have learnt to deal with pressure from many

perspectives. With INGIE Paris I have understood that you have to strike a balance between business and design, particularly at the beginning of designing for a new season, you need to design as much as possible and give free reign to your imagination and creativity. It’s the smallest of details which make the utmost difference to a design and I will always ensure that each element of my collection is designed to the standard expected of INGIE Paris. The pressures come on their own and I work hard and have to be very organised to secure the success of the brand from all avenues.

Tell us what the INGIE Paris woman stands for?

The INGIE Paris woman is international, feminine, elegant and sophisticated, she wants chic, luxurious fashion that reflects her powerful personality. The brand is designed to make the INGIE Paris woman stand out whilst wrapped in luxury fabrics and unique designs that ensure she is glamorous whatever the occasion.

How do you define your unique creative flair amidst the fashion world and how do you stay relevant?

I define my creative flair as continuously evolving through all of my experiences from working in the fashion industry. To stay relevant, I think it is important to find inspiration for creativity from unique sources and through the wonderful partnerships I’ve made by working with world renowned fashion brands over the years. I also love to discover new artists, designers, galleries, exhibitions and unique cultural elements during my travels. Capturing these moments and discovering fresh talent on social media keeps me relevant and inspires me to collaborate with the multitude of talent and beauty that is in the world.

OHLALA Spotlight

DECO ABSURDIST

The inspiration for Julianna Bass’s AW18 collection is centered around the positive nature/forces of absurdity. Not simply directly in relation to political climates or battles against inequality, but within ourselves and through our relationships with others. It is about stepping out of bounds and challenging the status quo. Being true to exactly who oneself is, saying it out loud, and without apology... owning the vibrancy that comes with the freedom of being vulnerable... and fighting absurdity with absurdity.

The vibrant colour infused throughout this Autumn/Winter collection is a departure from the designer’s usual trajectory. The primary print of the collection is notable for its bold deco geometry that communicates both feminine strength and whimsical delight. Once again, for this collection, Julianna collaborated with Berlin based artist, Peer Kriesel, to develop a custom print. The humanist, illustrative quality of the secondary print in strong juxtaposition to the geometry of the primary comes together to create a subtle statement of joyous absurdity.

Where we find absurdity we find humour and where we find humour we find strength.

FRENCH LUXURY-SHOES DESIGNER EUGENE

RICONNEAUS PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES INTEGRATING HIS LOVE OF ALL THING ARTS AMIDST CRAFT.

Eugene Riconneaus is a jack of all trades. He was born in the region of French castles (Chambord), and began working with an experienced boot maker at the age of 12. He possessed an innate understanding of the technicalities of shoe design as well as an astute business sense, much longer before he stepped into the shoe business.

Rocked by skateboard and underground culture, he rose to fame at only 19 years old. With no financial support from outside, he launched his eponymous shoe brand after visiting myriads of shoemakers and urban poet artists and after frequenting his godfather Raymond Massaro (Shoe master from Chanel).

His previous experience as art director of Repetto as well as of collaboration with Dr. Martens and alike contribute to his rich skills in managing projects with different team.

As a pop artist, Eugene debuted his first exhibition in Paris in collaboration with the director and

photographer Larry Clark in 2015. Always connecting his art universe to the shoe creation, up till now Eugene has held several solo art exhibitions in Paris.

Though very young, Eugene has counted for over 16 years “savoir-faire” in shoemaking and his embrace of art meeting shoe design sets him no limit in terms of creativity. This is why he excels a long record of collaborations with not only most prestigious stores as Colette and Supreme, but also with cross-over projects of Warner Bros. (Batman), art projects with MercedesBenz and BMW as well as the collaboration with Queen of Thailand for custom-made high heels and the art exhibition...

Over the years, he has received important prizes including “Talent de mode 2013” by French Minister of Culture and Communication Aurelie Filippetti, “Designer representing France” by French Minister of Economy Arnaud Montebourg and “The Kids of 1993 Take Over” by Dazed and Confused. Moreover, he was selected as jury of “Cutlog Art Fair Jury” in 2013.

FUN IN THE SUN

UVA/UVB rays are harmful all year long, but are especially damaging during the summer months when exposure levels are higher. That’s why it’s important to focus on sun and heat protection, in addition to maintaining your regular skincare routine. Angela Beitz explains how.

PROTECT YOUR SCALP

Hair does offer some shade from the sun, but the sensitive skin along your hairline can still get burnt along with other parts of your head. Using a sunscreen spray along your hair parting and the front of your head will help to prevent burning as it’s harder for creams to be absorbed in that spot. Mineral mists that are zinc-based sunscreens will dry clear on all skin tones.

SAY GOODBYE TO DRY SKIN

One of the most effective ways to exfoliate during the summer is to use a scrub on dry skin before you shower, pay special attention to knees and elbows and then finish with a rich body cream or oil within minutes of hopping out of the shower. The trick to great summer legs is moisture so after sloughing away those dead skin cells you need to get moisture in asap.

FIGHT ACNE

Body acne can happen any time of the year, but it’s more common during sweatier months. Washing in the morning with an acnefighting body wash will help to unblock pores and avoid nasty pimples and be sure to use Anti-Blemish Pads and products with Salicylic Acid at night.

AMP UP YOUR ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants are key in the summer, and there are tons of ways to work them into your routine. Layer on serums to boost the potency of your coverage. If you do get a burn, healing serums will help reduce the appearance of sun spots.

POWDER IS YOUR NEW FRIEND

The hassle of washing your face and redoing your makeup each time you need to reapply sunscreen is enough to drive anyone crazy so using a mineral make up and keeping your look more low key is definitely the answer. Touch up with mineral makeup that contains SPF 50, that will give you coverage and sun protection without compromising your look.

DON’T FORGET YOUR LIPS

Yes, your lips need sunscreen, too. They are super sensitive and very prone to burning since the sun can be extremely drying, keep them soft and smooth by using a rich lip balm with SPF 30 and don’t forget to reapply it when you’re outside.

COOL OFF WITH A MIST

Stash a bottle of face mist in your bag so you can mist your face and body when you’re at the beach. Choose one which is packed with antioxidants and nutrients that will soothe and hydrate skin on top of cooling you down.

THE ULTIMATE SPA EXPERIENCE

ANGELA BEITZ VISITS CHANEL’S ULTRA LUXURIOUS SPA, THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND IN THE WORLD.

spa visit is always an absolute pleasure and high on our list in terms of the perfect way to indulge and relax. A visit to Chanel Spa though exceeds any spa experience and we can hardly contain our excitement when we arrive at The Ritz Paris, the place Gabrielle Chanel called home for over three decades where the spa is housed. The Ritz Paris needs no introduction and this famous hotel has also been totally renovated a few years ago. We arrive in the lobby to a high display of light pink and fuchsia peonies and are shown to the Chanel Spa.

While most spa treatments begin with a generic questionnaire, Chanel goes a step further with in-depth consultations to be able to then choose what the best possible treatment is. This is an in depth form on a chic black iPad where you get to list all your skin concerns, which for us was to sort our dry skin and lacklustre complexion. The Hydra Beauty range has been chosen based on our skincare concerns to moisturise

Atype and concerns. The specialist starts with a very gentle and delicate cleansing of the face and purifying with lotion. Then the Micro Gel from Chanel’s Hydra Beauty series is applied around the eyes, reinforced by Micro Serum that delivers intense, lasting hydration into the skin. An amazing face massage technique are used to make sure all products are absorbed and everything like puffy eyes and fine lines are gone. Blue Serum is then used and we love this product as it works well on our dry skin and is great for rejuvenating tired skin, returning firmness and youth. Finally, Hydra Beauty Creme, infused with extract from Chanel’s signature camellia, and Micro Creme, filled with antioxidants to fortify the skin against environmental stress are used for an ultra-hydrating finish. The specialist then places a sheet mask to lock in the moisture and leaves the skin to take it all in as she massages the arms, neck, shoulders and décolletage. We then finish and our therapist asks us if we would like some make up and reveals an amazing collection of all Chanel makeup products and a stage mirror. She expertly applies minimal and replenish our skin and we change into a robe and head to the treatment room.

As you would expect, the décor is sleek and sophisticated with the Chanel references dotted around. The colour schemes consists of black, white and gold interiors with Chinese screens in the main spa area and robes, towels and even the vanity table are marked with “Chanel”. The treatment rooms are gorgeous with black and apricot tones and low lighting. We lay down on the super comfortable and luxurious treatment table to start our facial. Every Chanel treatment is customised to the guest’s skin

make-make (the way the French do it, less is more) and our skin is the best it has even looked. We are then led to the resting lounge, where we are treated to a delicious beauty ‘mocktail’, that is a Chanel Signature based to help your skin needs.

ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS

Global PRO tarteist™ for Tarte Cosmetics FREDDY LOPEZ reveals to JAYNE GREEN why he loves his job and why you must invest in your skin..

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m going into my 13th year of being in the makeup industry and I still have my original passion for the creative flexibility that makeup allows. I love working for a brand that is conscious about what we put on our skin. Maureen Kelly, Tarte Founder & CEO, says it best, “We wear our makeup longer than we sleep at night” so it’s incredibly important what we put on our skin.

When did you first know you wanted to become a makeup artist?

I first knew I wanted to be a makeup artist when I applied makeup to a client and their face lit up with joy. To this date I seek to find that joy in all my clients. I find that makeup can be utilised as a tool to strengthen your emotional wellbeing. Where do you manifest your inspiration from?

When I’m in “inspiration mode” I find that architecture inspires me quite a lot. Perhaps it’s the symmetry or asymmetry that can be found in design that allows me to get my creativity going. I also look to music, history of fashion and magazines. Tarte is a fun, fresh, effervescent brand that captures the joy of beauty in such a fun way - it’s quite refreshing. Let’s talk about your work with Tarte Cosmetics. What does a ‘typical’ day serving as a global PRO tarteist™ look like?

My days vary quite a lot. I can be ‘on set’ shooting our new Amazonian Clay Shoot with 4-5 curators in New York. Then the next

day be off on a plane for a #TrippinWithTarte trip, for instance. This last month I was in San Francisco, New York, Middle East, and Costa Rica all in one month. At Tarte we’re always involved with the latest trends, last year we supported the Victoria’s Secret House Party during Coachella. It was amazing and so much fun! We believe in what we call “Tarteistry”. That’s merging Tarte + Artistry which provides you with some stellar products! Sometimes I’m quite shocked myself how much travel is happening... in a good way of course. It’s always been a dream job for me. What has been your biggest challenge to date? How did you overcome this?

Oh gosh! The biggest challenge to date must be making sure that I’m on my A-game...always! Travel can take-up a lot of energy, so, I make sure to eat healthy, drink lots of Vitamin C, and I always pack my comfort pillow for long plane rides.

I’m an official convert to Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer. What is your favourite Tarte product and why?

I’m so glad you love this concealer. It’s one of my favorites as it also cares for the delicate skin around the eyes. It’s made with pure maracuja oil and Vitamin E and it’s such a great full coverage creaseless concealer. Maracuja means miracle and it truly is a miracle oil. I will forever be obsessed with Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer. It blurs out fine lines whilst also filling in pores and fine lines. It’s a literal Instagram filter for your skin!

What is your favourite beauty trend that has manifested as of late?

Beauty trends come and go, however I hope that the trend that stays is the empowering movement of makeup. I see many articles of how makeup is giving confidence to people

54 www.ohlala-magazine.com

“AT TARTE WE’RE ALWAYS INVOLVED WITH THE LATEST TRENDS, LAST YEAR WE SUPPORTED THE VICTORIA’S SECRET HOUSE PARTY DURING COACHELLA. IT WAS AMAZING AND SO MUCH FUN!”

all over the world and I hope this continues. At Tarte we have a #KissAndMakup campaign to spread love and stop cyber-bullying

The Middle-East is renowned for its love of precision around the eyes. What is your top tip for the perfect application of liner?

My favorite tip is setting the eyes with our Smooth Operator Transparent Loose Powder to take away any excess oils. Oils tend to cost the longevity of the eyeliner so this is always a great way to prep your eyes for liner and you can set your liner as well to further prevent fading.

Tell us your #1 beauty hack and/or tip(s) to share with our lovely Ohlala readers.

My favorite beauty hack is perfecting skin. If your skin is jammin’, anything and everything else will look so much better! Maracuja Oil will change your skin. I use it everyday and carry it in my makeup kit everywhere I go. What piece of advice would you share with other MUA’s looking up to you?

I would say to be creative! Makeup has no boundaries and neither should your creativity.

Reveal an interesting fact that we wouldn’t ordinarily know of.

I love animals! I grew up on a farm with chickens, goats, bunnies and I love being able to work for a cruelty free brand like Tarte.

FEELING KETOGENIC

Everyone is going Keto, or at least that is what it seems like. From celebrities to doctors, this diet is rapidly becoming popular, even bypassing Paleo in terms of google searches within the last few months! Not everyone approaches The Ketogenic Diet the same way and not everyone knows how to do it right, so, it is understandable why there is plenty of confusion surrounding this approach to food.

WHAT IS IT?

THE KETOGENIC DIET IS A DIETARY STYLE THAT FOCUSES ON A LOW CARB INTAKE (BETWEEN 20-70 GRAMS PER DAY), HIGH FAT INTAKE AND MODERATE PROTEIN INTAKE. THE GOAL OF IT IS THAT, ONCE OUR CARBOHYDRATE STORAGES ARE DEPLETED, THE BODY BEGINS TO USE ADIPOSE TISSUE (FAT) WITHIN THE BODY TO FUEL ITSELF IN A PROCESS CALL KETOSIS, THEREFORE BURNING UNWANTED BODY FAT.

Now, let’s talk myths, truths and lies...

Myth #1: Keto is dangerous because it increases our cholesterol

Let me start with this statement: Cholesterol isn’t the enemy. In fact, it is the precursor of our sex-hormones, which is why we’re having an epidemic in hormonal issues and infertility in places where the low-fat diet is highly popular. What is actually a risk when it comes to heart health? Triglycerides. What raised them? Carbs.

Now, because in the 80s and 90s medical and nutrition institutions started their war on fat, we have grown to believe that fat is the worst possible thing we could ever eat, when in fact it is the preferred source of fuel that our bodies have.

But in the end, there isn’t evidence at all that a Ketogenic diet poses any problem to our heart’s health and, in fact, the improvements in inflammation, cognition, hormonal and circulatory health that this dietary style has to offer, is quickly debunking the unjustified bad rep that fat has had for so long.

Myth #2: Keto is a new and under researched diet

Even though the Ketogenic Diet is getting lots of press and all the “cool kids” and celebrities are raving about it, the truth is that this diet is neither new nor revolutionary. On the contrary, the use of a therapeutic Ketogenic diet to treat illnesses like epilepsy goes back to ancient Greece, to around 400 BC.

Later, in 1921, physicians in different American research centres, including Russell Wilder at Mayo Clinic, started tweaking a version of it and combining it with fasting to help patients.

So, as you can see, Keto isn’t a new science at all, however, after decades of demonising fats and building up grains and carbs as the nutritional holy grail, many of us have gone against this and back to what we feel works best for us.

58 www.ohlala-magazine.com
Certified wellness coach ANAHI BROWN plates up her insight into the Keto Diet and demystifies the process.

HEALTH Files

Myth #3: Keto is nutritionally poor

I read versions of this one a lot. Especially from experts claiming that it leads to malnutrition due to the absence of grains and fruits. This myth is just a highly uneducated misinterpretation of Keto. The reality is that, unlike what most mainstream Keto proponents say, when you do Keto, as many do, focusing on butter, beef and bacon, you’ll have a massive nutritional gap to fill, however this is true for most diets really.

If you do Keto with a base on fresh vegetables and real food it can be much more nourishing than a “normal” diet because you’re not bulking up with low quality and anti-nutrients dense grains, and you’re also absorbing vitamins and minerals better by combining them with healthy fats.

It is also important to say that in everything related to nutrition, quality is key. You can do Keto eating mostly junk but that sooner or later will bring you health issues; whilst if you focus on a Ketogenic Diet packed with mostly organic, fresh and unprocessed vegetables and seeds, antibiotics and hormone free proteins and, large amounts of clean fats, both animal and vegetal, you will be setting yourself for success.

Myth #4: On Keto, you can eat unlimitedly and still lose weight

HEALTH Files

Most people approach Keto as an option when looking to shed some unwanted weight. In my professional experience, this diet works wonders on that department for most people. However, the claims that you can eat buckets and buckets of avocados, butter and nuts and don’t gain a single gram because you are “in ketosis” is flawed.

Although weight gain and weight loss is a bit more complex than merely calories in versus calories out, if you over consume calories, regardless of the quality and type of calories you consume, there isn’t a dietary style where you can overeat and lose weight.

Having said that, I want to add that, in my personal and professional experience with clients, if you approach Keto with an anchor in

self-love (aka I’m choosing these foods because they heal my body and mind and make me feel better) and get emotional and mindful support through your journey, overeating won’t happen much because you will be able to question cravings and will choose to eat the best foods you deserve and only when you are really hungry. This is my approach with my clients. Yes, we go through the Ketogenic principles, always with a base on real unprocessed food, but we also do a lot of emotional work to make sure the changes are sustainable, and the process makes you empowered and joyful, and not a total emotional wreck.

Myth #5: Whilst on Keto, you can’t exercise

I have heard this a lot and always makes me laugh. The truth is that unless you are a bodybuilder or a high-performance athlete, Keto will work perfectly for you, especially if thought through correctly. If you are like me, who despite a sedentary job enjoys daily high intensity activities (like Crossfit, HIIT, Muay Thai, etc.) a Ketogenic diet can support your metabolism in reducing inflammation and getting better results from your workouts. Even when fasting! The main thing here is to plan your training and use tools like carb backloading to make sure you have enough energy to respond and recover from your training sessions. It’s more about planning that about restricting.

These myths are just some examples of the misinformation that we are fed around Keto and other diets. The key in the end is to keep in mind that there isn’t a magic potion that works for everyone, so in the end my best advice is to try it, adjust and personalise it as you go along.

STAYCATION GOALS

The Doha Marriott is one of the oldest hotels in Doha opening in 1972. Back then, just the Sheraton and this hotel stood either side of the corniche. Back then it was called the Gulf Hotel but it got a grand upgrade in 2005. Boasting over 300 rooms this is a large hotel and it remains popular despite the wealth of newer hotels popping up all over Doha and beyond. As I lie on the beach and look back at the hotel, palm trees provided a calm oasis and a 20th century feel. When I turned around to take a dip in the cool sea, I looked out at a view of the big modern city of Doha. This really has the feeling of home away from home. The 70’s architecture gives off a slightly retro feel which adds to the feeling of escapism from Doha without ever having left it.

There is lots to do and plenty of facilities. The pool is large and rectangular and fun for all the family at the weekends. This is especially a great staycation spot if you have little ones or a large family.

I loved the relaxed vibe as families enjoyed time together in a friendly and sociable environment. There are dozens of sun loungers dotted around the pool as well as cute cabanas. Some of them are small for couples and there are bigger ones too for families and larger groups to gather under the shade. The poolside bar is called The View and offers a simple but successful menu of light bites, and burgers and pizzas which is just the kind of thing you want while you chill poolside. The service is fast and the staff are super friendly.

The beach was great. Not especially long but sufficiently sized for a private beach and not overfilled. We were easily able to source a sun lounger under a thatched umbrella. The sea was a perfect temperature and great to swim in. The view looked out over the sailing club but takes in the Museum of Islamic Art and the West Bay skyline in the back drop – making your weekend staycay just perfect for all those instagram shots!

The gym is a touch simple but covers the basics. Located on the lobby level by the spa, it contains a range of cardiovascular equipment and a selection of weights and muscle training units.

There is no shortage of options for places to eat. The best is arguably the iconic JW’s Steakhouse which is FACT award-winning! Located in the lobby, it is designed like a true old-fashioned steak restaurant with wooden oak panels. It’s dimly lit with booths and leather armchairs. The freshest cuts of beef are served to diners with impeccably strong service. It’s award winning for a reason. Yet this is not the hotel’s only pride and joy.

Corniche is its all-day dining restaurant serving breakfast in the morning, buffet themed nights throughout the week and the urban brunch on Friday which is known to be a great day out!

Walk along the ‘restaurant gallery’ and you’ll see restaurant after another as if you’re in an entertainment arcade but these outlets are not silly or tacky. They are of a five-star quality. There is ‘Salsa’ serving Tex Mex and a newly refreshed menu is being launched imminently.

There is a well renowned Indian restaurant called Taj Rasoi serving a Pan-Indian menu of crowd-pleasing dishes. Asia Live offers up an Asian fusion feast that will have your mouth watering with fabulous flavours.

The hotel is well maintained. We stayed in a sea facing Executive Suite which was gorgeous. Spacious, elegant and traditional. The bed was second only to the greatest night’s sleep I’ve ever had in my life. I swear the mattress moulded to my body shape! The view looked out over the sea at the new Doha of the now iconic West Bay skyline and the entire Corniche. Though only seven floors high in the old hotel, I’d wager that you’d struggle to find many better views to watch the sunset than from a room at the Doha Marriott Hotel!

We’ve slept on some of the comfiest beds in the world when it comes to luxury hotel stays (and even more boutique or budget properties) so a good night’s sleep is at the top of the list when staying at a 5-star hotel. But what about when you’re camping outside for the night or spending a long lazy day on the beach? Being at one with nature needn’t be a rough time and, thankfully, Marriott Hotels has the answer.. It all comes down to the brand’s TestBED programme across the Middle East & Africa. Marriott Hotels takes pride in staying ahead of the curve, and in a continuing effort to find cutting-edge technologies that provide guests with the best. First launched by Marriott Hotels across Europe in 2016, a unique 10-week accelerator programme gives start-ups the opportunity to test their products within an operating Marriott Hotel in a major city. The programme is open to seed and early stage start-ups with products or services that are ready to pilot in a live hotel environment. It offers them an invaluable opportunity to gain worthwhile feedback from guests and associates to help further develop and perfect their product. Participating start-ups are hand-picked in an effort to uncover those that can revolutionise a guest’s stay, reinventing the hotel experience throughout the region. Those selected are also be offered mentoring and global exposure. This time around, it’s the versatile Beachill that makes the cut. An eco-friendly solarpowered beach mattress that can even charge guests’ mobile devices and cool their drinks. The mattress features a built-in solar-powered 7-watt charging station with a USB 2.0 output, a 2-litre thermo-storage fridge where you can preserve both your hot and cold beverages, and a heat- and water-proof pocket to help keep your valuables safe, all pulled together with Dralon Acrylic fabric imported from Spain and an ergonomically-designed finish to ensure absolute comfort as well. It’s easily pulled apart and put back together, so that it’s ultra-portable and easy to carry, making it the ultimate leisure companion whether you intend to use it at the beach, a campsite, or even your own living room. It’s fully waterproof, sun proof and anti bacterial, designed in an ergonomic way to give the best comfortable experience. Not only, that but Beachill is made from two main parts, the pillow and the body. The pillow can be easily removed and it contains the main features. The mattress is made of lightweight material and can be easily carried and folded.

A Jetsetters Secret

French Luxury Maison, MOYNAT PARIS has been creating custommade luxury luggage goods for over 160 years. The brand, pioneered by PAULINE MOYNAT, is revered for its utilitarian old-world outlook on trunks and their signature personalisation services.

Moynat Paris’ pieces are painstakingly handcrafted using techniques trademarked in the 19th century and brought into the 21st by their innovative Creative Director, Ramesh Nair. The Maison’s history is replete with doing things in a way that can be appreciated only by the most discerning traveler, including precise hand painted detailing that can be commissioned through their studio in Paris and their method of angle stitching, a Moynat specialty for over 150 years.

TRUNK AL NOOR

Marking Moynat’s Middle Eastern debut, the Trunk Al Noor is a made to measure case for the Holy Koran. Signature leather and intricate Moynat detailing embellish the outer case while the inside is plush with velvet and a clever mechanism that elevates the Koran once the trunk is opened.

THE BEAUTY TRUNK FOR THE ORIENT EXPRESS

Another partnership, this time with beauty behemoth Guerlain, the Orient Express is Moynat’s gift to the world of beauty. A luxury vanity that requires over 700 hours of painstaking craftsmanship, the tanned calfskin dyed in Orient-Express blue contains many fine accessories including a scented fan and a baccarat bottle of Guerlain’s heady Shalimar.

BREAKFAST TRUNK

Moynat’s history is replete with great partnerships including their signature offering – the Limousine Trunk. Their latest collaboration with chef Yannick Alleno is a delightful Breakfast Trunk. The ultimate epicurean luxury, the trunk holds a plethora of linens and table furnishings required for an exquisite breakfast including a La Cornue Burner. The trunk has been crafted in signature Moynat style with their statement silhouette, engraved initials and art deco motif adding to the luxury of the mobile kitchen.

THE MALLE MACARON BY MOYNAT

French gastronomy meets Parisian artistry in this bespoke macaron trunk inspired by the “Entrepneu” trunk created by Moynat in the 1900’s to transport the spare tyre of an automobile. With a lid that spreads like the wings of a lady bird, the Malle Macaron incorporates Pierre Herme’s famous delicacies into its design with leather in the same cassis color that is reminiscent of his celebrated Ispahan macaron.

LA MALLE BICYCLETTE BY MOYNAT

The Bicyclette Trunk is reminiscent of the English countryside and a world where detail and attention were paid to even the most basic accessories. A compact tapered trunk with a signature curve in deference to a bicycle wheel, the La Malle Bicyclette is a masterpiece in elegance.

THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER TRUNK FOR JAGUAR

Moynat’s history is vastly intertwined with innovation in transport. The Electric Scooter Trunk for Jaguar is a one-of-a-kind scooter trunk that fits into the trunk of a Jaguar F-Type convertible. Bringing a touch of whimsy to Moynat’s commitment to luxurious travel, this trunk is the realization of over 900 working hours.

CARNIVOROUS STATE OF MIND S

triking flavours, impressive views, strong service and a relaxed ambience are the hallmarks of an often forgotten haunt in the Souq that has fast become a favourite spot of mine. There are some famous places to eat that jump out at you from the street and then there are those slightly hidden from view or higher up forcing you to tilt your gaze.

Al Matbakh Rooftop Grill sits at the top of the Arumaila Hotel which is part of the nine properties that fall under the umbrella of the Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels. Al Matbakh itself translates from the Arabic for ‘The Kitchen’ and some special things come out of Al Matbakh!

We found ourselves a cute alcove in a window bay that boasted one of the best views in the Souq. In the immediate glare are the dusty rooftops of the classically Arabic market place, but on the periphery, is the Doha skyline towering over West Bay and forming the perfect picture postcard. We arrived

early and had the pleasure to watch the sunset from our elevated position and after the last flecks of sunlight, the lights started twinkling and the view at night was all the more radiant. Food is hot, fresh and highly flavoursome. It is not a pretentious menu or one that is filled with fusion and experimental dishes. It is not an especially vast or long menu either. It offers a decent variety of options and they are well known Indian dishes. What is for certain, is that the quality of the cooking, the presentation and the service are second-to-none.

The winning appetiser is surely the chicken tikka. The chicken thighs are marinated in spicy yoghurt and they are cooked in the tandoor oven. When presented to the table, they are sitting on a mini grill still sizzling and I could barely

see my fellow diner across the table for all the steam!

The prawns pakoda are also worth it. The prawns are enormous! They are fried in a crispy batter and served with a tempered yoghurt with mint. Like the chicken tandoori, they similarly emerge on a tiny grill still sizzling with steam billowing.

The samosa chole chaat is an excellent item for vegetarians. Rich in flavour and stunningly presented. We’re talking vegetable samosa, chickpea curry and that yummy yoghurt and mint. Samosas can get a little boring and predictable but some evident time, care and thought has been invested here.

The naan bread is fresh, warm and dances perfectly against your tastebuds with the garlic and butter adorning its moreish surface.

The main courses are all exquisite. The lamb and chicken biryanis respectively are incredible though rather filling. Served in a pot, as it should be, to retain the

flavour, it is rich in texture and taste. The chicken makhani is mildly spicy without being too hot. The chicken tikka was simmered in a rich tomato and cashew nut gravy.

Something you don’t always get in Indian restaurants in nalli nihari - Old Delhi style lamb shanks braised in a spiced gravy. The lamb was succulent and you could taste that it had been braised for hours on a low heat.

The quality is ever present across the board. From the fresh mocktails, the mango lassi which slipped down a treat to the mostly Indian desserts which are equally as nice. Take the zafrani rasmalai as a good example with its cheese dumplings soaked in thickened, sweetened milk or the gulab jamun which is a dessert of grated carrots cooked with whole milk, dried fruits and ghee. My favourite was the cheese cake with the mango coulis. Though not immediately apparent, this is called a rooftop venue because the roof can slide off in an instant - weather dependent. It had been a little windy the day we went so the roof was on when we visited but they slid it off later on so we could dine at height under the stars and admire the view. This is not the sort of place to dine and dash. Friends, family or a group of colleagues can plan to spend a whole evening here eating as much as you like and then see away the night with tea and shisha of which there is a good array of flavours to choose from.

The decor is comfortable and elegant though not typical of other Indian venues we have attended but we did notice screens playing Indian music videos adding a nice vibe to the place.

GETTING EMOJI-NAL

We’re all guilty of using an emoji to mask what we would truthfully like to message people, what with its swift accessibility and the knowledge that they can be deemed as ambiguous (at times). Who wouldn’t be a fan of utilising such a ‘cartoon-esque’ keyboard?

For years now, people all around the world have been increasingly communicating with each other using emoji, a series of digital pictures and icons that convey a variety of ideas and concepts. We’ve all succumbed to it and responded to messages with a ‘mere’ thumbs-up or an ‘okay’ hand gesture symbol. Have we became lazy in our thought process to breed further communication, or, are we simply moving with the technological times? WhatsApp introduced them to the mainstream, but they work on other platforms too.

They are the offspring of the sometimes animated, sometimes still emoticons that those of us who were on the internet in the early 2000s would use to liven up our chats on MSN Messenger (while typing things like “ASL?” and using dial-up internet. And listening to Ja Rule. It was a dark time, okay?). Skype has offered animated emoticons for years, and recently added short

video clips called Mojis that function as reactions during conversation. On Twitter, where the ever-popular GIF is overtaking photos as a means (memes?) of conversation, you can now access a “GIF keyboard” to find the perfect way to express yourself if words are just not cutting it.

More recently, Facebook has branched out from offering the simple “Like” response to friends’ posts, and included a whole new range of “reactions”. This trend has prompted some to wonder if online communication will eventually become “post-language”, or whether we should consider emoji as a language of its own.

Mostly, the move towards a more pictorial way of conveying meaning enables a more genuine emotional interaction with fellow humans. Plain text is often bad at letting us know the tone and delivery of a word, and we lose all non-verbal cues, too: body language, hand gestures and reactions. So, what’s next? Already, internet shorthand has bled into the real world, with words like “lol” “rofl” and “oh-em-gee” actually being said out loud in place of what they originally abbreviated. I will have to confess to such debauchery on the English language too. Guilty as charged and I blame it on my inner millennial which I find myself referring to more frequently amidst my everyday life, especially whilst working from my MacBook Pro amidst copper lighting, whilst drinking from a mere jam jar with an ‘oh-solovely’ striped straw.

The truth is, linguists are quick to point out that emoji still lack a system of grammar, therefore dismissing claims that they can ever function as a language on their own.

With Facebook’s new range of “reactions” and the growing use of GIFs and emoji, the way we interact online will continue to change. Words will always be important, but we’ll find new ways to make them even more meaningful... won’t we?
