Time flies when you’re having fun! It only feels like yesterday that our last December issue went to press. I’m always up for a trip down nostalgia lane (my favourite lane!) to evaluate the growth of myself as a person, my career and of course my bundle of joy that is Ohlala magazine. I’m so proud of what she has accomplished and continually strives to achieve as the ultimate destination for the ‘Modern Middle Eastern Woman’. No matter what age you are, the festive season will always mean glitter, and lots of it. From the twinkling tinsel to the flashy fashion, it’s not Winter without a generous dose of glitz, and there’s plenty to be found on our Style Focus pages. The old attitude of saving your sparkle for after-dark has been replaced by a new appreciation for daytime glitz. So you can throw that trench on with blue jeans and trainers, or style that skirt with a rollneck jumper and boots - because sequins are for life, not just for this season. Fashion contributor Pooja Adam interviewed the lovely shoe-obsessed Kholoud (@koodiz) at the pop-up launch of Aquazzura at VIP Gate, Villaggio Mall and we cannot help but be envious over her ever-growing collection.

What started as a hobby in 2009 to combine her passion for photography, fashion and art, Kholoud’s Instagram (@koodiz) today has caught the attention of several fashion enthusiasts in Qatar and beyond. Best known for her obsession with high heels, she currently owns 162 pairs of shoes and counting. As an admirer of AQUAZZURA designs herself, she nostalgically spoke about “Wild Thing” sandals which was her first purchase from the brand. We also got to discuss some of AQUAZZURA’s ‘must have’ designs such as the ‘Crystal Temptation 105’, the ‘Concorde 105’ and the ‘Powder Puff’ styles. Tell us why these shoes so critically acclaimed and why we should indulge ourselves in such a purchase.

Designers such as AQUAZZURA put a lot of effort in creating their designer footwear collection and it’s their specialty. I do get upset when I see original designs of shoes being copied by the high street and I appreciate that not everyone can afford designer heels. I believe that if it’s something that you are passionate about, you can work towards buying designer shoes. I always prefer original designer shoes and am never tempted to get a copy because of the way the designer shoes make you feel, it’s a feeling you get when you wear them, nothing compares to it! The way a woman carries herself and she feels in those shoes is a very special and transforming feeling. Jayne Green sits down and talks to Samia Alsaleh, the lovely winner of our Special Contribution to the Beauty and Wellness Industry about Organique and Sa by Samia.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and where it all began.

I was in love with art and wanted to study it but my parents wanted me to study Business and Banking at University as it was in demand. I graduated in 2008 the year of the financial crisis therefore it wasn’t easy to find a job. Obviously this had a big impact on me emotionally as I was at home seemingly with no purpose. Then my Aunt asked me to spend some time in her Salon. I had expected to be the manager but in fact I was the stock keeper. She told me that I needed to count the stock –how many shampoos are on the shelves, this kind of thing. She stressed that if you want to learn the business then you start from the beginning. I was promoted to shop assistant and eventually I went to study at two academies to become a makeup artist. Once I had the accreditation, I became the manager in the salon. After this I worked as an accountant but felt like a caged bird unable to explore my creative side. I knew that I must start my own business and that opening a salon with a good friend was the way forward. This salon was the first to launch raw products infused into organic treatments to their customers. I decided that I wanted to create a business based solely around Organic products and at this time I was taking a massive risk as Organic wasn’t as highly prized as it is today. My husband and my parents supported me and I was able to found Organique. My Father helped in every area. He even helped me to paint the make up room and the rest of the family were also so heavily involved. I then devoted myself to producing home made products for every treatment. People would ask to buy the products but at that time I was unable to sell the products we used. After the government challenged me about using my own products I realised that after only 6 months I needed to create my own range. I flew to

Istanbul and took my herbs and asked a manufacturer to produce my range of products. I feel blessed and so happy that this range has been a success and so many people have bought my products. How did you choose the ingredients and create your formulas used throughout your range of products and treatments? My inspiration was undoubtedly a collective of my Mother, Grandmother and my Aunty. They gave me so much valuable advice about the traditional herbs and the processes through which I needed to go to produce these formulas. Every time I travel to the Far East, Bali, Thailand and India I spend so much time investigating the properties behind their herbs and spices. I want to learn how to maximise the benefits of every ingredient. Especially the oils which are complex and need to be treated accordingly. I have the problem that some ladies mix organic and herbal treatments which are both very strong but don’t necessarily complement one another. I then decided to focus on using Social Media to inform clients and prospective clients about the safest treatments to use. I feel that I have to find out about ach and every ingredient and brand in order to know if I can support it and inform my clients about it.

Us ladies in The Middle East suffer greatly from the elements. What would you recommend from your line to treat this?

I noticed that most ladies have hand creams in their bags and suffer from dehydration - whether that be skin or hair it is evident in a big way throughout The Middle East. I decided that my focus must be to replenish and therefore so many of my products are infused with Shea Butter - I’m obsessed about its hydrating properties. In addition I push our clients to use protection such as sun block or products which coat and protect. Educating our clients and providing informative advice is very important to counter the effects of the sun as well as providing the ultimate treatment. We look after our clients throughout the whole process and recommend a series of treatments and products which will both sustain and maintain said benefits.

How does it make you feel when you are doing Bridal MakeUp and you are part of such a special day?

The ‘Wow’ moment is when you zip up the dress for the client at the end of the whole process. It is a very happy ending for me. The trust that the Bride puts in me is beyond explanation. This sense of trust brings out the best in a makeup artist as it means that the Bride is a canvas for us - there’s a lot of trust there. Many of my customers send me pictures of their special day and of their babies which is phenomenal. We remember every bride by name.

What plans do you have for the next five years?

What I hope is that I can create an oasis where we are free

from mobile technology and social media and encourage clients to read books and magazines rather than looking at their phones throughout the process. We need the ladies to be with us and to enjoy the moment as opposed to succumbing to distractions. They need to detox from the pressures of the modern world. No children, no social media just relaxation and indulging yourselves.

People are also asking for new products and additions to the ranges and therefore I want to bring more lines for the customers. We will also be rolling out the lines to other therapists and salons and so we have great expectations for what the next few years might bring.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. While I was born and raised in Kuwait, I left Kuwait after my high school to continue my university education in Toronto, Canada. I started working in the beauty industry when I was 18 and continued working in the industry in various specialties while studying in Canada. I have always been passionate about the beauty industry and that compelled me to study Esthetics (and become a certified esthetician) in parallel with my Business Degree at Ryerson University which I pursued to support my dream to always run my own business.

With forever changing trends in the market it can be overwhelming for start-up businesses, what advice would you give people entering the beauty industry who decide to embark on such a challenge?

“Do what you love and love what you do.” is the mantra that I live by. My first advice to anyone wishing to get into any business is to ensure that they love what they do. The beauty business is a habit contagious business and what I mean is that your enjoyment will be contagious to your team and your team will transfer that enjoyment to your clients.

My second advice is to ensure they have the technical and managerial experience to build a successful beauty business model. While it may seem easy to open up a business in the beauty industry, many companies have closed down due to the drop in sales which was due to the lack of ability to deliver the quality the customers now expect.

The Qatar market is a sophisticated market and our customers expect high standards of service. Any new business should expect and be prepared to deliver a high standard of quality, which customers will demand.

I’m glad I went with that because it ended up being perfect for my nail type!

My sister had her nails occasionally chip or break off when she went elsewhere, but I thankfully never had so much as a tiny chip. I think this really depends on your day-to-day, because acrylics are really strong. My job basically involves a lot of typing, so it’s not that intense on my nails.

As far as adjusting, this really depends on the length you choose. I’ve always naturally had short nails, so jumping from that to long acrylics was a struggle at first. Buttoning shirts or grabbing small things like zippers or paperclips was almost impossible until I got used to the longer nails being in the way. Typing of any sort, on my phone or on a keyboard, was also an ordeal until my fingers adjusted - but, alas, that sound of tapping once conquered proves musical to any women’s ears.

My therapist handpainted a custom design with gel polish and a delicate brush. Watching this process was extremely fascinating and I couldn’t help but be in awe of their artåistic prowess. Lastly, it is important to find the salon that’s a perfect fit for you - I can’t stress this one enough! The first salon I went to ended up being a very uncomfortable and unpleasant environment, and it got to the point where I was dreading each appointment. Try different places until you find one that you feel comfortable in, enjoy the people, and look forward to your appointments. Although be warned that welcoming La Mano Bella will undoubtedly become your new best friend.

Women have been wearing artificial nails for decades, pre-Kardashians, thanks to an accidental invention in 1955 when a dentist named Fred Slack repaired his own broken fingernail. Hip-hop artists embraced the trend in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and now artificial nails are quite mainstream. But my natural nails are healthy, and I’d heard numerous removal horror stories, so I’ve been too nervous to experiment. Until now.

For me, this is the perfect combination allowing me to immediately feel at home, and thus let myself unwind.

First on the agenda was my scrub using a premium scrub that smelled absolutely heavenly. After this initial insight into the spa and its repertoire, nothing could of calmed me for the next wave of relaxation. I was further welcomed and escorted off to one of their treatment rooms that was beautifully prepared and ready for my arrival. The walk alone to said treatment room was mystifying as every inch of decor has been designed so intricately that you cannot help but be distracted. After undressing I lay face-down on the massage table and almost immediately began to let go ready for my 60 minute Balinese Massage. With long, smooth strokes my therapist massaged a generous helping of fragrant rose oil onto my tense

and tired body, and already I was sold. With soft supple hands that just melted into my skin my therapist had clearly been well-trained, knowing exactly how much pressure to apply on different parts of the body, and using not only palms and fingers but also forearms for deeper, broader work. I was sinking into a semi-conscious state and feeling wonderfully pampered. The sensitivity in my neck, and the large knots in my shoulders were now reduced greatly and I’d felt very different to the woman who walked through the doors just an hour ago! treatment was an oxygen facial, also known for its properties of energising and detoxifying stressed, dull skin with a nutritional superfood boost. Here I was treated to an entire array of natural, beautifully scented products from the range. Starting with an eye and lip cleanse before a full facial cleanse - smooth and silky it massaged into the skin easily, offering a deep cleanse. Each skincare product is removed using a compress and a toner was then applied to cleanse any residue product from my skin and this was followed by some fragrant oil - a light-weight and non-greasy product with an incredulously captivating scent. The oil was gently massaged into my face, neck and décolleté thereby increasing vitality and circulation within the skin. Following this my therapist applied a Mask that was left for 10 minutes to ‘do its magic’ during which time the personal indulgence continued with a delicious and soothing scalp massage.

The final stages of the facial include removing, or should I say peeling the mask off, was the application of their eye cream, a must for all us women who want to keep those fine lines and wrinkles at bay. The generous application of said products ensured that I was suitably moisturised and hydrated throughout the day.

This really was such a great way to spend my afternoon and something I most definitely need to schedule into my calendar more often.The wonderful state of peace and calm that I felt is something I’d like to keep with me throughout my day. I suppose I’ll just have to return on a regular basis to help me maintain not only beautiful, well-cared for skin but also to bring my body back to a balanced, pain-free and supple state - and you should too!

A WORLD OF RELAXATION

Anantara was conceived in 2001 with the opening of the first luxury property in Thailand in historic Hua Hin. With this in mind I eagerly boarded the Ferry to embark on my daycation to Banana Island.

The welcome was generous and played to the rhythm of the beating drums and smiles and laughter of the resort staff. The island setting is serene and discretely charming. It exudes a sense of relaxation and tranquillity with the architecture showcasing that it is the embodiment of all you would expect to find on a tropical island. Tiki style thatched lodges, a series of terraces and a restaurant set out to sea on a timber pontoon. Thatched roofs and exposed timber beams further add to the illusion of south pacific grandeur.

The Anantara Spa combines the vibrant scents and sights of both a Turkish Hammam and also a traditional Thai Spa. The Hammam area is tiled in vibrant azure blue and white mosaic tiles with filigree fretwork framing the glazed ceiling which allows light to flood in. The treatment rooms are simply decorated and have the benefit of subdued lighting or the ability to employ the floor-to-ceiling windows in order to make the most of the sea views.

Banana Island is the epitome of uniqueness. This became apparent as soon as I ventured into the Balance Wellness by Anantara area. The lobby is the epitome of south pacific splendour with mahogany panelling, a vaulted ceiling and a water feature with climbing vines. The ten minute fish pedicure was both fascinating and effective. My feet felt revitalised and incredibly smooth. Not something I have ever been offered in other resorts around the world and I was thankful for this innovative induction as I completed a consultation form with my therapist. Signature treatments throughout the entire resort include a Moroccan Bath Ceremony and Biotec Antiageing treatments. The Couples Suites and the Ice well are other highlights. However, the Water Walkway area resembling a meandering creek winding

its way through the vast vaulted pool area is a treat for the senses in every way. Following my flirtation of the fishy kind I was escorted to a flotation tank within which surrounds you in Epsom salts and water designed to relieve sleep problems and relax stiff muscles. The feeling was both relaxing and invigorating and prepared me perfectly for the Ayurvedic Treatment. An expertly delivered Indian head massage combined with aromatherapy oil, the scent was selected after a detailed consultation with my therapist, drizzled directly onto my forehead. The combined experience left me feeling centred and revived.

After working up an appetite strolling through the beautiful landscaped grounds, taking in the panoramic views of the Gulf I visited Riva, for fine Italian cuisine. All this relaxation had me ravenous. The restaurant is reminiscent of a trattoria with fresh produce on display and is designed to bring the outside inside with floor-to-ceiling glazed, shuttered doors opening onto the terrace area. Italians staples such as pizza, pasta and risotto should not be overlooked however, the stand out dishes such as Branzino, Pan Seared Sea Bass with buttered broccoli puree and tomato

confit or Tiger Prawns with Crispy Fennel and juicy Seared Salmon with caponata and pine nuts are showstopping. The word for end or finale in Italian, ‘Fine’, perfectly sums up the array of sweet treats on offer. The chocolate fondant was perfectly decadent and perfectly balanced. Relaxing on the pristine sands of the private beach area afforded me the time to reflect upon my daycation on Banana Island. This is pure escapism blended with the very best of luxury and uniqueness where you can be assured that you have looked after that important number one … you.

“Moments” launches the first wedding integrated showroom for Brides-to-be in Qatar

Ohlala discovered elegance in abundance during this staycation, nestled between old and new Doha, close to the biggest shopping malls in Qatar, five-star Ezdan Palace Hotel truly raises the bar in service, style and sheer indulgence.

Ezdan Palace is nestled between the traditional and modern areas of Doha and this is reflected in the architecture and décor. Those behind the inception of the hotel drew inspiration from the Andalusian period with Moorish architecture that is evident throughout. The exterior, especially when illuminated at night is reminiscent of a grand palace and most definitely fitting for a lavish stay.

The lobby area is a triumph. It is decadence at its most sophisticated and refined. The sleek lines of the glass fronted elevators and the sweeping staircases which frame the space transport guests to a regal setting complete with marble and ornate golden flourishes. This theme of luxuriance is carried throughout the hotel. Moorish geometric patterns etched into feature walls and ceiling roses exude Arabian extravagance. As I made my way through the communal spaces and into my room every step made me stand a little straighter, raise my head a little higher and move with more confidence. The ambience was infectious, being surrounded by such splendour made me feel like a million dollars.

As I stepped inside my Superior Room I felt that no name would truly give justice to the facilities and furnishing. Carefully designed for the comfort of their guests, all Superior Rooms offer an en-suite bathroom with a deep soaking bath - which is incredulously relaxing - and separate shower. As a workaholic I thanked the comfortable workspace and Nespresso coffee machine to get my caffeine fix, whereas the 49” Full HD Smart TV and free high-speed Wi-Fi made this experience all the more efficient.The pool area is overlooked on all sides by the guest rooms and suites and the shape itself resembles what can best be described as a ‘flourish’ with stylish wooden sofas and vast armchairs . It adds a complementary contemporary note. Following a relaxing or invigorating treatment in the spa or indeed a delicious lunch, this space is perfect to contemplate the tranquillity of your surroundings.

I pondered whether or not I had taken a wrong turn , perhaps wandered into the wrong restaurant for breakfast - I was fortunate that I hadn’t. White leather chairs with dark wooden detailing, large glass light shades with delicate Moorish, filigree detailing and golden flourishes on tables and wall designs adorn the decadent space. This is certainly not your average buffet style restaurant. The breakfast selection was all encompassing and replenished with fresh produce and finely prepared dishes regularly. Whether you seek traditional Arabian delicacies or western staples there is something here for everyone.

Evening dinner was served a la carte and once again it proved a feast for my senses as the setting was Haute Cuisine, yet the array of dishes showcased itself as truly international - variety at its very best. The whole experience was so much more than I had anticipated. This seemed to be the overriding theme here at Ezdan. One of my favourite definitions is that the way to measure contentment or happiness is the distance between expectation and reality... At Ezdan, reality and expectation are one in the same.

It will come as no surprise that the spa treatment rooms were some of the most ornately decorated and furnished that I have ever experienced. More Andalusian ‘regal’ touches which elevated a fabulously relaxing spa treatment beyond expectation. Two hours have never passed by so quickly . The relaxing massage and scrub left every inch of my body feeling revived and rejuvenated and the bespoke facial for my sensitive skin had me glowing for all the right reasons.

The ornate décor, the overriding sense of luxury and grandeur will doubtlessly appeal to every manner of prospective guest, from business associates to friends hoping to be pampered and thoroughly spoiled amidst the backdrop of an Andalusian Palace. The Spa facilities were the treasured jewel in the crown here at Ezdan Palace - especially with such welcoming staff. The potential for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation make this venue a must for residents or visitors to Doha.

Start your weekend in style with the exquisite brunch that NOBU delivers within our beloved FOUR SEASONS HOTEL DOHA, featuring a wide selection of speciality dishes and muddled beverages.

The Four Seasons brand is synonymous with delivering the very best of the best in style, service, décor, comfort and cuisine. Nobu is housed within one of the most architecturally fascinating buildings that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. The pontoon upon which it stands in our Arabian Gulf has branches of jetties moored with all manner of vessels and at the end stands the rotunda that is indeed Nobu.

Japanese style and culture is saturated in a love of elements of nature, of wood, of incredulously positioned bamboo and natural materials. The décor at Nobu mirrors this in every area. The terrace set across layers of a wide staircase running around the outside of the building is furnished with chairs and tables which appear to have been fashioned from marble or granite and which envelope those who occupy them. The main dining area is cavernous and suspended from the ceiling are large screens inspired by the bamboo mats used to create rolls of sushi. Large pendulous baubles of light illuminate the space by night but by day the panoramic views afforded by the floor-to-ceiling glazing are resplendent.

It might be a little much to suggest that Nobu should be visited just to take in its position ‘floating’ in the gulf with its phenomenal design and décor, but, it certainly makes for a stunning setting for any occasion. Brunch is served between 12.30 and 4.30 pm every Friday and as a result combines Japanese technique and flavours with more familiar brunch staples. The atmosphere is sophisticated yet convivial and the knowledgeable hosts guide your choices should you require their opinion.

Each table receives a broad selection of ‘bites’ including sushi, spiced broccoli, tiny tacos accompanied by shiny glass noodles and salted edamame beans waiting to pop from their pod. This light introduction with its abundance of flavour and seasonings will bring your taste buds to life and have you craving the next part of this ‘Tabi’ (journey or trip). From here you may wish to indulge in Beef Tenderloin seared to perfection and served with eggs and tantalising tomato salsa, Lobster and Truffle Risotto or Matcha Waffles with Crispy Chicken. The King Crab legs are served with a truffle crust and the Black Cod with Yuzu Miso may be the most beautifully balanced plate of food I have ever seen. The white platter, complete with banana leaf and a deliciously juicy slab of cod topped with a vibrant purple and white pickle, was designed with circular wells to hold the miso sauce. This focus on minutiae is so typically Japanese and incredibly brilliant.

The tropical nature of the infusions and elixirs on offer along with the more expected and accepted brunch drinks provided a broad and exciting choice for diners. Lychee and acai, coconut and yuzu are employed by the mixologists to complement each dish perfectly.

To conclude Nobu offer another abundant selection of sweet treats for brunch diners. Caramelised Vanilla cake, waffles or pancakes paired with matcha and yuzu or house made ice cream and sorbet all hold their own. However, the addition of the quirky Chocolate Bento Box to the menu should not be missed. Traditionally the lacquered wooden box would contain rice and noodles and fish or meat and would provide exactly one portion of home cooked food or a favourite dish to be taken away from a restaurant. Here at Nobu the box delivers an elegant chocolatey end to an elegantly oriental brunch. For quality, minimalist, Japanese brilliance and genuinely awe inspiring décor Nobu should not be missed.

I’m starting to get very irritated (no, make that angry) about the beauty industry’s latest catchphrase: ageless beauty. This ironically old marketing campaign comes out in force, especially in the lead up to various holidays. Adverts either try to sell me some anti-aging cream to erase my wrinkles or tell me I need to wear an age-defying push-up bra. Well, I don’t need either. Why? I’m in love with my fine lines and wrinkles. They showcase character... Or so I tell myself. And as far as anything else goes, I don’t want them hoisted up to my chin like those of my former teen self. Nope. I’ll take ones that match the rest of my more senior body, thank you.

Let’s be honest. The word ageless isn’t about “not looking your age.” It’s not used to compliment a woman who, at 20 is mistaken for a 40-yearold. It’s about looking younger. So it’s ageist. Some older women often become an odd montage of separately aging body parts. Which, I guess,

is why no one has a clue as to their actual, chronological age. Promoting ageless beauty is also profoundly sexist. No one admires George Clooney for looking “ageless.” But when the media runs glamorous photos of Kris Jenner (age 62), the next paragraph criticises her for using Botox or undergoing plastic surgery. Yep, ageing women can’t win either way. Age-defying campaigns are a way to make women feel quite frankly rubbish about their outer appearance, even when we buy into the ageless beauty trap.

I’ve got no issue with any woman who dyes her hair, whitens her teeth, or goes under the knife. Women should have autonomy over their bodies. My style makes me happy, but it’s not right for anyone else. It’s an expression of who I am. What’s maddening is when celebrities are deemed as ‘brave’ for not conforming to social standards. It’s a not-sosubtle criticism of anyone who happens to choose a different beauty regimen. The fashion industry relies on women buying into unobtainable and aspirational beauty goals. The irony is that now I don’t give two hoots if anyone knows my age. There’s no need to lie. Let us look, feel, and be ourselves.
