Editor’s Letter
Summer is here! Yay or nay? For me, it’s yay! I know the weather during this time of the year is unbearable in this part of the world, but I love the longer days, lighter food and colourful wardrobes. Many mums might disagree with this, but not having school is a big plus for me. It also means travelling! In our combined July and August issue, we explore what to wear, bring an in-depth article about keeping a healthy complexion during this time of the year and uncover themed cruises to sail away.
There is no better season to embrace a vibrant wardrobe and wear eye-catching accessories – go for flowy dresses, shorts and sandals and enjoy your warm days and nights in style.
Our beauty section highlights new products and a pampering session with a friend at eforea Spa. And, if you're staying in the country, Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas is a summer treat to beat the heat. Count us in for a travelling adventure! We were invited to stay at the Dorothea Hotel in Budapest and discover what this incredible city offers.
French Chef Auguste Escoffier was one of the most influential Western chefs from the beginning of the 20th century, and he said: “Good food is the foundation of genuine happiness,” I couldn't agree more. We dined at two restaurants this month, Salama and Shanghai Club; we bring all the details about their Moroccan and Cantonese cuisines, respectively, just for you!
Our motoring experience was on board the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 SUV 4Matic and, this time, the journey was extra special – don’t miss out on learning all about it!
Happy Summer reading!

GOLDEN EMBERS
Valérie Messika introduces a new aesthetic for the maison: Fiery.
Valérie Messika, the visionary founder and Artistic Director of Messika, introduces a captivating new aesthetic to the renowned jewellery house with the Fiery collection. This innovative line reinvents the pear-cut diamond, infusing it with a fresh, dynamic spirit that balances modernity with timelessness.
Fiery is a masterful embodiment of contrasts. On one side, the traditional roundness of the teardrop shape exudes a classic charm. On the other, a bold, subversive edge adds a contemporary twist. This duality reflects the core of the brand’s DNA, where the essence of the diamond is revealed in all its multifaceted brilliance.
Valérie describes it as a collection of juxtaposition. It is modern, with its robust gold pieces, yet timeless in its refined design. The assortment includes pieces that serve dual purposes: they are minimalist, classic creations as well as fashion-forward statements with a playful edge.
The hallmark of this collection is the uninhibited elegance of the pear-cut diamond. Wrapped in solid gold with precision-cut sides, the precious stone transcends traditional settings. It remains dazzling and precious, true to the brand’s renowned diamond expertise, but now more assertive, sharp and graphic. This new motif, first introduced in 2014 high jewellery collections and revisited in 2020 through a collaboration with Kate Moss, has now been given its own dedicated assemblage.
Fiery comprises four striking and contrasting jewels designed for those with spicy and bold personalities. It features avant-garde creations that invite endless mix-and-match possibilities. Whether worn point up or down, combined with different gold colours, or stacked with varying carat sizes of diamonds, it encourages personal expression. Each piece allows the wearer to style their flame as they wish, emphasising individuality and creativity.

SPLASH IN STYLE
Breitling’s Superocean collection makes waves with its new rainbow-dial assortment, debuting alongside the powerful deep-water Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver.
Breitling has expanded its Superocean collection with two exciting new additions, blending colourful design and robust engineering. Launched at the Wheels and Waves festival in Biarritz, France, the latest models, the Superocean Automatic Rainbow and Turquoise-Dial editions and the Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver celebrate the brand’s rich heritage and an ongoing commitment to innovation.
SUPEROCEAN RAINBOW AND TURQUOISE-DIAL EDITIONS
The new Superocean Automatic 42 and 36 models introduce a playful twist to Breitling’s renowned dive watches. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Superocean Slow Motion of the 1960s and ‘70s, these models feature a high-contrast minute scale, luminescent baton indexes and ‘paddle’ hands, ensuring easy readability underwater.
The standout feature of these editions is the gradient of Super-LumiNova hues on the hour markers and hands, spanning yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, red and orange. These colours not only offer a vibrant daytime appearance but also glow in a variety of shades in low-light conditions. The 42mm models come in stainless steel with rubber straps available in turquoise, aquamarine, orange and yellow. The 36mm version combines a white dial with a stainless steel and 18-carat red gold case, paired with a white rubber strap. The collection also includes a 44mm turquoise-dial model, now enhanced with a tone-on-tone turquoise rubber bracelet, contrasting strikingly with its black ceramic bezel. All models are equipped with sporty rubber straps featuring micro-adjustment clasps and polished, scratch-resistant ceramic bezel inserts, making them ideal for both action and leisure.
SUPEROCEAN AUTOMATIC 46 SUPER DIVER
For those who seek extreme underwater adventures, Breitling introduces the Superocean Automatic 46 Super Diver. This model is engineered for deep-sea exploration, boasting water resistance up to 1,000 metres. Available in stealthy green or black camouflage dials, it features matching ceramic inlays that stand out both in and out of the water.
A notable innovation is its bidirectional rotating bezel with a patented safety lock, preventing unintended adjustments and ensuring precise tracking. Additionally, a soft-iron inner case protects the watch from magnetic interference, maintaining accurate timekeeping regardless of environmental factors.
Crafted from lightweight titanium, these watches come with either a colour-matched rubber strap or a sleek titanium bracelet, combining functionality with nautical flair.
The new Superocean models continue the brand’s tradition of combining aesthetic appeal with superior functionality. Whether riding the waves or attending a beachside dinner, these watches are designed to be the perfect companion for summer adventures.

A Fragrant Journey
FENDI’s debut perfume collection celebrates almost a century of elegance and craftsmanship with seven exclusive scents.
For the first time in its history, FENDI introduces a complete collection of perfumes. As the Roman maison approaches its centenary, it reveals a more personal side through seven exclusive fragrances. These scents not only evoke the brand’s rich heritage but also embody its cherished family values.
The journey began in 1925 when Adele Casagrande Fendi and her husband, Edoardo Fendi, opened a fur and leather goods workshop in Rome. This legacy has been meticulously passed down through generations of strong, inspirational women, creating a brand renowned for its elegance, craftsmanship and innovation. The new collection is a testament to this legacy, reflecting the future of perfumery with its exclusive narrative and vibrant compositions.
Each of the seven fragrances embodies a unique aspect of the brand’s history, inspired by significant locations and the personalities within the FENDI family. These aromas offer an intimate invitation to explore the heart of the brand, capturing the spirit and values that have defined the maison for nearly a century.
Prima Terra, crafted by perfumer Quentin Bisch, evokes the landscapes of Southern and Eastern Africa, where Artistic Director Kim Jones spent his childhood. It features tangerine, rosemary and oak moss, creating a scent that is both powerful and generous.
Perché No, by Silvia Venturini Fendi, offers a fresh, mineral fragrance inspired by the simplicity and warmth of a white sheet drying in the sun.
Pink pepper and sandalwood add a nuanced depth to this composition.
Sempre Mio, developed by Delfina Delettrez Fendi, reflects her connection to the Atlas foothills and the Ourika Valley. The fragrance combines Calabrian bergamot, cedarwood and Moroccan orange blossom, creating a bold and intimate scent.
Ciao Amore, designed by Leonetta Luciano Fendi, captures the essence of youth and love with fig, orange blossom and tonka bean, reminiscent of summers spent on the island of Ponza.
Dolce Bacio, by Anna Fendi, features Damascene rose, sweet apricot and Indonesian patchouli, symbolising a mother’s kiss and the strength of family ties.
Casa Grande, honouring Adele Casagrande Fendi, blends spicy myrrh, amber, cherry and leather to reflect the history and success of the Fendi dynasty.
La Baguette, a tribute to twins Tazio and Dardo Vascellari Delettrez Fendi, combines powdery iris, Madagascar vanilla and a velvety leather note, encapsulating the warmth and simplicity of family life.

Radiating the carefree allure of sun-soaked days, this limited-edition range invites one to bask in a sensorial journey, blending salty ocean breezes with the fragrant blooms of sun-drenched landscapes.
A creative collaboration with French artist Alexandre Benjamin Navet breathes life into the collection. Navet’s pastel designs and radiant hues evoke the vibrant, laid-back spirit of the region’s coast. His artistry, intertwined with the brand’s signature elegance, creates a contemporary, graphic poetry that adorns every item, encapsulating the joy of summer living.
A highlight of the collection is Diptyque’s first-ever summer valise. This exquisite travel set offers 10 delightful surprises from the brand’s summer favourites, elegantly packaged in travel-friendly formats. Featuring personal fragrances, home scents and seasonal care products, the valise is designed to enhance any getaway, making it a perfect companion for sun-filled adventures.
Central to the collection is the beloved Ilio fragrance, which celebrates the Mediterranean through the unconventional scent of prickly pear. This floral and fruity bouquet is accented with subtle notes of iris and jasmine, available as an eau de toilette and a hair mist. New this season is the Ilio face and body mist – an alcohol-free refresher, perfect for a quick spritz on the go.
The range extends to practical yet luxurious essentials, such as the body spray combining geranium and lemongrass, ideal for warding off mosquitoes on warm nights. Complementing this is the Citronnelle candle, offered in classic and extra-large sizes, as well as a trio set featuring Citronnelle, Cyprès and Figuier, capturing the quintessential coastal atmosphere.
Diptyque’s 2024 summer collection is a celebration of lightness and vibrancy. It invites a modern, joyous art of living, deeply inspired by the Southern lifestyle and its idyllic landscapes, reflecting the poetic essence of shared summer moments.

Invest in YOUR SKIN
BEAT THE HEAT
Soaring temperatures demand a shift in your skincare routine. Bushra Hakim uncovers the best practices for keeping your skin healthy and radiant amidst the Middle Eastern heat.
Summer is upon us and, while people around the world rejoice in the warmth and sunshine, here in the Middle East, the season can be a challenge. The relentless heat and intense sun can take a toll on our skin, making it crucial to adapt our skincare routines to stay fresh and protected. Instead of leisurely afternoons in the sun, we find ourselves seeking refuge in the cool indoors, with our skin battling dehydration, sunburn and the harsh effects of the climate. Dr Aysha Almedfa, a dermatologist specialist in the Middle East, offers her expert advice on how to keep your skin at its best during the hottest months of the year.
EFFECTS OF EXTREME HEAT ON SKIN
During the warmer months, with the increase in heat, humidity and sweating, many may experience heightened oiliness in their skin, leading to acne breakouts on the face, upper back and chest. Excessive sweating can also lead to fungal infections, particularly in areas such as the groin and underarms. Dr Aysha explains: "The intense heat and wearing occlusive clothing may increase the risk of folliculitis – a bacterial infection of the hair follicles – and may also lead to the development of a heat rash, which occurs when sweat glands become blocked." Prolonged sun exposure is another major concern, as it can cause UV damage and the development of sunburn. Sun exposure can also exacerbate preexisting skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, particularly for patients with melasma, and can worsen rosacea.
SUMMER SKINCARE
Adapting your skincare routine to combat the heat is essential. "Being diligent with the use of sunscreen is crucial. Choose a broad-spectrum with an SPF of 30 or higher and make sure to apply it generously to all exposed areas of the skin, including the ears, lips, back of the neck and tops of the feet. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming, exercising or sweating profusely," says Dr Aysha.
Ensuring your skin stays hydrated is also vital. There is a common misconception that oily skin doesn't require moisturiser; however, that's not true. Using a lightweight, mattifying moisturiser can help control the extra shine while ensuring your skin stays properly hydrated. Cleansing is another important step. Use an appropriate cleanser based on your skin type. Finally, consider using lightweight make-up and sunscreens to feel fresh during the hot months.
PREVENTING AND TREATING ACNE
Managing acne-prone skin in hot weather can be particularly challenging due to the increased sweating and oil production. Dr Aysha recommends choosing non-comedogenic, oil-free products to keep your skin clear. "Opt for lightweight, mattifying moisturisers and sunscreens specifically formulated for oily skin," she advises, as these products help prevent clogged pores and manage excess oil. Foaming cleansers are beneficial for acne-prone skin. These cleansers effectively remove excess oil without stripping the skin. Additionally, it's important to avoid over-exfoliating, which can irritate the complexion and aggravate acne. Instead, use a gentle salicylic acid cleanser once or twice a week to control oil production and keep pores clear.
DEALING WITH HEAT
Staying hydrated internally is just as important as your external skincare routine. Dr Aysha underscores the critical importance of drinking ample water throughout the day to maintain skin hydration and overall health. In addition, adopt comprehensive sun safety practices to shield your skin from the sun's harsh effects. With the ozone layer depleting, sunscreen application is imperative; opt for waterproof or water-resistant formulas for prolonged outdoor activities. Apply sunscreen generously 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming, sweating heavily or exercising. Avoid direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are most intense, and seek shade during these hours to further protect your skin. Accessories such as sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats and protective clothing offer additional defence against UV radiation.
Dr Aysha's personal regimen includes starting with a cream-based sunscreen and using spray-based formulas for body reapplication, and sun sticks or powders for facial touch-ups. In warmer months, she prefers lightweight make-up or tinted moisturisers and sunscreens. Before applying sunscreen, she uses a vitamin C serum to combat oxidative stress caused by UV exposure, which accelerates skin ageing and can lead to various skin issues.
GENERAL TIPS
While skincare routines often focus on specific products and treatments, it's essential not to overlook the importance of general tips for maintaining healthy skin. These holistic approaches can complement your skincare regimen and contribute to overall skin health.
Diet: Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, into your diet to protect your skin from damage. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and flaxseeds, can help keep your skin hydrated and reduce inflammation. Additionally, excessive sugar and dairy intake should be limited to prevent acne breakouts.
Sleep: Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night to allow your skin to enter repair mode. Sufficient rest is essential for maintaining healthy, radiant skin and preventing dullness and fatigue.
Stress Management: High-stress levels can exacerbate skin issues like acne and eczema. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breathing exercises to keep stress levels in check and promote overall skin health. Taking care of your mental well-being is just as important as your skincare routine for achieving a glowing, healthy complexion.

FROM STRESS TO SERENITY
A pampering spa day is best enjoyed with some company, and AMS headed to eforea Spa with a friend for a rejuvenating experience.
Eforea Spa at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas has an undeniable wow factor. The reception area is a grand showcase of elegance, featuring stunning archways and intricate décor that immediately evoke a sense of luxury and tranquillity. The space is beautifully illuminated with soft, ambient lighting, enhancing the serene atmosphere. The salon area is equally inviting, designed to be both modern and soothing.
After being taken to the clean and well-appointed changing area, my friend and I were led to a relaxation area. The space boasts four comfortable chairs, each offering a breathtaking view of the beach. Soon after, we were welcomed with a refreshing lemon, honey and green tea drink, accompanied by a towel soaked in Oriental essential oils.
PERSONALISED PAMPERING
As we browsed the menu of services, we discovered a range of treatments that blend ancient traditions with modern techniques to renew the mind, body and spirit. These included a Hydrafacial, designed to rejuvenate and illuminate the skin, and the Rebalance Impulse (a non-invasive mental wellness and neuro-relaxation machine), which uses neuroscience to reduce stress, improve sleep quality and boost the immune system. The spa also features a traditional Hammam for cleansing and healing, as well as thermal facilities, including a sauna and steam room, and a fullservice salon. Four treatment rooms contain Himalayan salt walls, adding a unique and health-promoting touch to the ambience.
I was there with a friend, and I was the first to be led in for my treatment. Annette from Uganda greeted me warmly and handed me a consultation card. I had the choice of three oils for my treatments: calming, chamomile or oud. All the products used are 99% organic and from Sothys, a renowned French brand.
BALINESE BLISS
My session began with a luxurious foot scrub using a royal jelly scrub with honey and sea salt, which left my feet feeling soft and revitalised. The first treatment was the Balinese massage, a traditional technique that reawakens the senses and induces a state of calm. This massage combines acupressure and skin rolling with firm but smooth strokes, effectively relieving tension and promoting relaxation. The skilled therapist used firm yet gentle pressure, making sure to ask if I was comfortable with it.
EXFOLIATION EXCELLENCE
Following the massage, I experienced the Salt and Oil Scrub, a 30-minute treatment that was nothing short of exceptional. This body exfoliation combines sea salts with essential oils, leaving the skin nourished, smooth and supple. The scrub not only softened my skin but also invigorated my senses, thanks to the aromatic blend of oils used. The therapist ensured every part of my body received attention, resulting in a thorough and deeply satisfying exfoliation. Overall, the treatments left me feeling completely rejuvenated and pampered. The expert techniques and high-quality products worked in harmony to melt away stress and revitalise my skin, providing a perfect balance of relaxation and invigoration. The experience was a true escape, leaving me with a renewed sense of well-being and a glowing, refreshed complexion.
AROMATHERAPY MAGIC
The journey for my friend began with a much-needed Aroma Well-being Massage, expertly crafted to release tension and soothe stressed muscles. She chose her preferred oil while her feet bathed in warm water, getting to know the therapist. Once she was lying comfortably, the therapist’s skilled hands worked their magic, and her knots melted away. She was asked if she needed less or more pressure, which was appreciated. She described each stroke as a symphony of relaxation, easing her into a state of blissful tranquillity.
CUSTOMISED FACIAL CARE
The indulgence didn’t end there. After the massage, she was treated to a luxurious Sothys Personalised Facial tailored to her specific skincare needs. Sothys products are renowned for their exquisite formulations and transformative effects. The aesthetician assessed her skin with precision and there was a sense of anticipation for the personalised treatment that would follow. From cleansing to moisturising, each step of the facial was infused with nourishing goodness. Her skin drank in the revitalising ingredients with each application, leaving it radiant and refreshed. The experience was a journey of self-care and rejuvenation. As she emerged from the tranquil oasis of the spa, she had a healthy, glowing complexion and a deep sense of peace. Both of our experiences at eforea Spa were nothing short of extraordinary. The combination of serene surroundings, expert therapists and highquality products provided a perfect escape from the stresses of daily life. From the luxurious foot scrub and Balinese massage to the Aroma Wellbeing Massage and personalised facial, every detail was meticulously designed to enhance relaxation and rejuvenation. We left the spa feeling like new versions of ourselves, refreshed, revitalised and ready to embrace the world with renewed energy and tranquillity.

A Floral AFFAIR
Inspired by the fleeting beauty of jasmine blossoms, CH Carolina Herrera’s High Summer Collection captures the essence of the season with brilliant colours, luxurious fabrics and exquisite craftsmanship.
Flowers are at the heart of Carolina Herrera’s designs, and nowhere is this more evident than in the CH Carolina Herrera High Summer Collection. Jasmine blossoms are more than just a backdrop here; they symbolise the season’s spirit, embodying the effortless charm and allure of summer. These delicate flowers remind us of the fleeting nature of beauty, urging us to seize the moment and revel in its splendour.
Inspired by this ephemeral beauty, the ensemble showcases a palette of mauve, green, red and yellow intertwined in light prints that reflect the brand’s universe. These vibrant hues are beautifully offset by the purity of white, reminiscent of the brand’s signature flower. The collection offers a complete wardrobe crafted from luxurious linen, cotton and silk, playing with volumes and flattering lengths. Shorts are paired with blouses boasting exaggerated shapes, while shirt dresses in unique fabrics explore varying silhouettes. Tailoring, in both jackets and trousers, remains fundamental, providing a structured yet elegant foundation.
A highlight of the assemblage is the meticulous craftsmanship displayed in the leather atelier in Spain. Handcrafted bags, made from summer favourites like braided seaweed, include the Vendôme and Duchess bags. Exclusive leathers are used to create the vibrant and cheerful Doma and Initials Insignia bags, each piece a testament to the brand’s dedication to quality and style.
A poetic ode unfolds within the CH Carolina Herrera Jasmine 3D background mural, where allure and timeless charm intertwine.

FROM DIAMONDS TO MUSICAL GEMS
OHLALA caught up with Qatar’s first female contemporary composer, singer and songwriter, Dana Al Fardan, to talk about early memories, musical passions and her recent performance at the Cannes International Film Festival.
“Music is a fundamental facet in establishing a robust, passionate, vibrant society.”
– Dana Al Fardan
OHLALA – When did your passion for music first emerge?
Dana Al Fardan – As a child, I tinkered on the piano constantly and randomly came up with melodies. I caught a performance of a symphony orchestra on TV when I was around 10 and it was like pure and utter magic for me. I was obsessed with it. I couldn’t believe the breadth and depth of sound that came out of the musicians. I used to love breaking down the instrumentation, memorising what was going to happen. Then a bit later my mother took me to see a musical in the West End [London] which had a profound effect on me, this method of storytelling, it’s so transcendental, it incorporates everything… it’s the most guttural experience.
OHLALA – What made you decide to study international relations and then gemmology before returning to your first love, music and musicals?
Dana – My higher education in international relations not only taught me the art of diplomacy and communication but, through the course of the four years, I connected with my roots through classes in Arabic literature, philosophy and history. So, my pursuit of music was not only a vehicle to project myself and my truth on a personal level, but also to communicate my story in the context of my rich cultural heritage. The transition was seamless and not as much of an extreme shift in the opposite direction as it may initially appear. My engagement in the jewellery sector of my family’s business was also a great training period. All the skills I had picked up helped me develop the capacity to navigate through new challenges and frameworks. And I was definitely launched into a whole new ecosystem that I knew nothing about when I one day woke up and decided to become a musician.
OHLALA – You’ve said that your life was transformed by the birth of your daughter, Layla. Please tell us about that and how it affected your path?
Dana – I was still working in the family business and found out I was expecting a child. I felt that something was missing in my life, that I was not making an impact. Then, one day I get pregnant, and I find out it’s a girl. I was going to be bringing life into this world and this child was not going to know a very fundamental truth about me. I understood that for me to lead by example, I had to live my most authentic life, I had to be true to myself. I couldn’t imagine cultivating an honest relationship with my daughter if I was denying this huge part of who I was: a musician.
OHLALA – Amongst a raft of firsts, you’ve recently become the first artist from the Gulf region to appear at the renowned Cannes Film Festival. How did this come about and how did you feel to make history on that famous stage?
Dana – I was truly honoured to have the opportunity to be a part of this incredible event. As an artist, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have an impact on such a high profile and culturally important platform and, as Cultural Ambassador of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO), I proudly represented this role, including members of the QPO, to a global stage.
OHLALA – You performed music from your latest release, Indigo. What was the inspiration for the album and how has it been received so far?
Dana – When COVID-19 hit, I spent the lockdown listening to music and reading prolifically. It was a time of study and that’s how I approach all that I do. One of the books I read during this time was Goethe’s The Theory of Colour, which delves into the physiological effects of colour. It helped me to reflect and cultivated a stillness that was once missing in my life – allowing me to identify and reconnect with my inner self. That was what sparked the idea for my album Indigo. The album seeks to reimagine the meeting points between sound and colour in order to reconstruct our human relation to these senses. Each track has its own colour scheme and mood and corresponding videos. The album is very conceptual and abstract, allowing the listener the space to interpret. The live show is a multi-sensory experience with a light show, performed by piano, chamber orchestra and electronics. So far the album has been very well received and performed for a sold-out audience around the globe.
OHLALA – Alongside your musical career, you’re involved in social responsibility initiatives; how, as an artist, does your passion contribute to society?
Dana – Music is integrative, it is a toolkit for children and adults as well to engage into something beyond them, to activate their passions. Music is a fundamental facet in establishing a robust, passionate, vibrant society. I am the Cultural Ambassador of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra as well the ambassador of the Qatar Primary School Choir of the Year. I’ve also supported Nagam 2023, through the Music Affairs Centre, the first contest aimed to discover talent in the field of performing arts in music and singing. It aims to achieve the objectives of the Ministry of Culture, especially the department of culture and arts with the hope of sustaining and giving the opportunity to talented people to discover their capacities and determine their paths.

HOSPITALITY
HOSPITALITY
A meeting of architecture and design with history and modernity is what Chirine Halabi discovered on a visit to Hungary’s stunning capital.
During my recent trip to Budapest, I had the pleasure of staying at the exquisite Dorothea Hotel, Budapest, Autograph Collection, which launched last November. The property left an indelible mark on my heart and made my experience in the city truly unforgettable.
Nestled in the iconic District V in the heart of this captivating capital and spread across three historic buildings, the hotel itself was a sight to behold, with its grand architecture and luxurious ambience.
The 216 rooms and suites are equipped with every modern amenity to make for a comfortable stay and are split into two distinct design styles.
The contemporary rooms boast relaxing beige décor, brought to life with pops of orange and fashion artworks by Zoltán Tombor, which are found throughout the hotel. Heritage rooms are located in the Weber Building, the oldest part of the property. Their doors feature remarkable portraits of women from the 1800s, while inside soft furnishings with subtle floral embroidery evoke local folk motifs.
I started every day of my stay with breakfast at the Pavilion Restaurant where I indulged in a variety of delectable egg dishes, perfectly prepared to my liking. The culinary delights were complemented by the rich aroma and impeccable taste of their expertly brewed coffee and velvety hot chocolates which boosted me to start my days.
Each Autograph Collection property offers what is known as ‘The Mark’, an experience unique to the hotel. In the Dorothea’s case, this is found in Pavilion where a succulent herb wall pays tribute to Palatine Joseph, husband of Archduchess Dorothea, for whom the hotel is named. His deep fascination for botany gave rise to the wall and various plants which are the ingredients and inspiration behind the mixed drinks and dishes throughout the hotel’s dining venues.
Before heading out to explore, I was happy to meet Ráhel Orbán of the hotel’s owning company BDPST Group, which, as well as numerous philanthropic endeavours, has a mission to contribute to the conservation of Hungary’s architectural heritage. She told me: “Budapest is a very special city and the architecture is unique. It’s a truly authentic European city where the vibes are different and that’s why we invited you to show you the creativity and culture of our beautiful country.”
Known as the ‘Paris of the East’, the Hungarian capital boasts a rich history and a vibrant cultural scene. To kick off my exploration, I decided to book tours with Vogue Venture Hospitality, who took care of a one-ofa-kind visit to the iconic Parliament building, a magnificent architectural masterpiece that stands proudly on the banks of the Danube River. As I marvelled at its stunning neo-Gothic design and intricate details, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and admiration for the city’s rich heritage. One of the highlights of my time in Budapest was a leisurely cruise along the Danube. Boarding a charming boat, I embarked on a journey that allowed me to witness the city’s beauty from a unique perspective. As we sailed gently along the river, I was captivated by the picturesque views of the Liberty Statue, the Chain Bridge, which spans the river between Buda and Pest, and the majestic Parliament building.
For a memorable night out, I decided to immerse myself in the city’s vibrant cultural scene by attending a music and dance performance at the renowned Hungarian State Opera House. The opulent interior of the building, with its intricate decorations and lavish chandeliers, transported me to a world of elegance and refinement. As the curtain lifted and the performers took the stage, I was enthralled by their talent and the sheer beauty of the production. The acoustics of the opera house were incredible, enhancing the power and emotion of the music, making it an unforgettable evening.
Returning to the Dorothea Hotel after my long day of exploring, I found solace in its serene and luxurious surroundings. The hotel’s elegant décor, attention to detail, and impeccable service made me feel like royalty. My comfortable and well-appointed room provided a sanctuary where I could unwind and recharge for the next day’s adventures.
Between my cultural cruises and shopping experiences I took the chance to relax at the hotel’s Anton Deli, a cosy spot that offers a variety of delicious mocktails to satisfy your thirst. Whether you’re looking for something fruity, tangy or even savoury, they have options to suit every taste. I tried a Virgin Mojito, such a refreshing option made with lime juice, mint leaves, soda water and a hint of sweetness. My friend had a Berry Blast, a blend of mixed berries, fresh lemon juice and soda water, garnished with mint leaves. Anton Deli will definitely surprise you with its innovative mixes and it’s a really worthwhile stop to check out the full range.
At night though, I would treat myself at the Aleli Budapest Italian osteria, a renowned eatery led by the Dani Garcia Group with close supervision and inspiration from the three Michelin-starred chef.
The restaurant is known for its emphasis on Italian cuisine, with a modern twist and features a variety of delectable dishes crafted with the finest ingredients, showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs. One of the standouts is the Tartare di Manzo e Foie Gras. This dish combines the richness of foie gras with the tenderness of beef tartare, creating a harmonious blend of tastes and textures. Another must-try that I loved is the Risotto al Pesto e Burrata. This creamy risotto is infused with the aromatic flavours of pesto and topped with a generous helping of burrata cheese, resulting in a luxurious and satisfying dish. And last but not least, the selection of desserts at Aleli Budapest is equally impressive. From classic Italian treats like tiramisu and panna cotta to inventive creations, the desserts are beautifully presented and offer a delightful conclusion to your meal.
Soon it was time to head home but my personal experience at the Dorothea Hotel and my time in Budapest exceeded all expectations. I found myself in the company of exceptional visitors, who exemplified the exclusivity of this destination and emphasised the need for global recognition. Furthermore, it is worth noting the remarkable sense of security I experienced while traversing the various locales, both by day and night. This city truly astounded me! I will forever cherish the memories created during my stay, and I highly recommend others to explore this remarkable city and indulge in the luxurious hospitality of the Dorothea Hotel.

SECRETS OF CANTONESE COOKING
Spectacular views and original flavours are what you find at Shanghai Club. Kay Woodward zooms skywards to enjoy their authentic cuisine.
When it comes to great locations, JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha has pretty much nailed it. The five-star hotel soars high among the iconic skyline of famously futuristic West Bay. It couldn’t be any more central. So wherever your journey begins in Doha, it will never take too long to get here. Dusk has just fallen as we glide up to the hotel’s entrance and step inside the shining lobby. The welcoming staff direct us to the swish elevators. Tonight, we’re visiting Shanghai Club, and we’re going a very, very long way up the city.
Shanghai Club is located on the 43rd floor of the hotel in a space so impressive that it makes us gasp. Because the restaurant occupies two floors, the ceiling is way above us. Meanwhile, the walls are decorated with an eclectic mix of art – paintings, ceramics and a huge Chinese dragon that bends and twists from floor to ceiling, hinting at culinary delights to come. But one of the most eye-catching aspects of the restaurant is provided by the city itself. Double-height windows afford a breathtaking view of Doha and beyond. From our corner table, we can see as far as the Pearl in one direction and Doha Port in the other. And, of course, there’s all the glittering fabulousness in between – skyscrapers twinkle while far below rivers of traffic flow.
It’s at this point that we remember that we’ve come here to dazzle our taste buds as well as our eyes and switch our gaze from the view to the menu. Shanghai Club’s pan-Asian carte is so enticing – and so extensive – that it would take several visits to do it justice. Thankfully, our lovely server, Eltin, suggests we let the chef decide, which is the best idea I’ve heard all week.
We begin with the dim sum and sushi. It’s all homemade and absolutely delicious, but my favourites are the mushroom dumplings – emerald parcels of pure scrumptuousness – and the California rolls, so precisely filled with crab, cucumber and avocado. We resolve to come back next Monday for Shanghai Club’s all-you-can-eat Sushi and Dim Sum evening. These bite-sized treats clearly deserve our full attention.
Chef Kong – from Xi’an in Shaanxi Province – is renowned for his authentic Cantonese cuisine, and next, he chooses an array of his signature dishes for us to savour. First, there’s the Sichuan Boiled Seabass. This is served in a surprisingly spicy sauce that offsets the supremely tender pieces of perfectly cooked fish. It’s sublime.
Also, from the ocean, there’s Hong Kong Fried Seafood. Imagine, if you will, scallops, prawns, squid and abalone. If you haven’t discovered it yet, abalone is a deep-sea shellfish delicacy. If you know it already, you’ll also know how delicious it is. Asparagus, peppers and mushrooms add depth and, impossibly, yet more flavour.
Sweet and Sour Chicken is so ubiquitous that you might be tempted to write it off. But please don’t. Chef Kong’s Sweet and Sour Chicken is the best we have ever eaten. It’s cooked Beijing-style and the chicken is succulent, piquant and indescribably good. Afterwards, our plate is so clean it looks as if it’s already been through the dishwasher.
Convinced that we can’t possibly devour anything as good as the Sweet and Sour Chicken, we try the Mopu Tofu and are instantly proved wrong. Silken tofu mingles with beef and Sichuan chilli to create a dish that’s smoky and punchy. I love it.
The Lamian Noodles – also homemade – are so moreish. Wide ribbons tumble messily in a piquant sauce of chilli and garlic in hot oil. It’s comfort food at its best. I almost wish that I could take a huge bowl of this home right now and devour it at the same time as the new series of Bridgerton. Except I can’t because now there’s the Peking Duck.
I love Peking Duck. And I adore the pure theatre of its preparation, too. It swiftly becomes clear that Chef Kong is one of the best. Entranced, I watch as he carefully slices the crispy bronze duck with a precision I can only dream of. Gently, he assembles the pancakes, filling them with duck, slithers of spring onion and cucumber, finishing with just a drizzle of hoisin sauce. The rolls are works of art. Clumsily, we assemble our own, which are not works of art but taste great.
And that’s it. We simply can’t fit in any more delicious Cantonese food and it’s time to descend 43 floors back to real life. But before we go, we take a stroll around the rest of Shanghai Club. As well as the eye-catching dining area, we discover a cool social area filled with guests and an atmosphere where, every night after 8pm, a DJ spins the decks. Upstairs, there are private rooms for dining or simply for relaxing with friends. And all around, there’s the pièce de résistance – the glorious 360 views of glittering, sparkling, dazzling Doha.
If there’s a better backdrop to a perfect meal, I’m yet to find it.

TOUCH
A refined Moroccan menu with a French coast influence and sophisticated beach vibes is what Kay Woodward experiences at Salama.
Al Maha Island was already the ultimate destination. Awardwinning luxury restaurants line the water’s edge; a stylish beach club radiates old-world glamour; supercars purr, growl and roar; and a thrilling theme park glitters. But, fabulously, there is now yet another reason to head for the island of dreams – Salama Doha.
One of the best things about Al Maha is that you don’t need to catch a boat to get there. Instead, a palm-tree-lined boulevard curves from Lusail out to sea, and we glide along it, revelling in the sheer glitz. Could Salama Doha be anywhere more perfect? In short, no. The restaurant shares an entrance with the Bagatelle Beach Club – with its palm trees, striped sunbeds and white sunshades, it’s so chic it hurts – and overlooks the gently lapping sea. The exterior is splendid, with grand arches and delicate fretwork. A huge, sturdy wooden door swings wide and we are welcomed inside to gaze in awe at the restaurant itself. Burnt sienna paintwork creates a warm backdrop for a cornucopia of filigree lampshades, with a magnificent chandelier centre stage. Parlour palms and Moroccan cushions are dotted here and there, while the seating is laid back and insanely comfortable. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. Rio, our server, finds us the perfect table and, when we’re dazzled by the menu, he suggests dishes he thinks we might enjoy.
We begin with a dish that perfectly showcases Salama’s ethos – Moroccan food with a Riviera twist. Here, the traditional Baba Ganoush has been totally reimagined in a deconstructed dish that combines texture and taste. A layer of a smoky aubergine purée is topped with creamy Burrata, then decorated with avocado swirls, chickpeas and pomegranate seeds. It tastes exactly as wonderful as it looks.
We try a duo of salads. The first doesn’t just use all of the vowels in the alphabet; it’s delicious, too. Salad Mechouia is a glorious tumble of roasted peppers and tomatoes, shining with silky olive oil. It’s perfect scooped up with Arabic bread. But if you’re a fan of stretchy, creamy Italian cheese, don’t miss the Stracciatella Cherry Tomatoes. Silky Stracciatella, studded with firm tomatoes and laced with emerald-hued basil oil, is satisfying, comforting and best shared.
The beef skewers are juicy, chargrilled and so tasty. Then there’s Tuna Tartare. I dive in. The tuna is delicate, and the flavours are divine. Glistening pink tuna, fresh dill, pine nuts, avocado oil and teriyaki sauce? Yes, please. Rio tells us that they’re often asked why this beautiful starter is on the menu. “It’s because we’re not a traditional Moroccan restaurant,” he says with a smile. I’m beginning to think this is my favourite type of restaurant ever.
And this is before we experience the Chicken Briouate. A filo-pastrywrapped parcel of shredded chicken dusted with icing sugar and cinnamon, it’s piquant, sweet and savoury. If you’re vegetarian, the Goat Cheese and Honey Briouate is no less impressive. Stuffed with goat’s cheese, drizzled with honey and decorated with sprigs of mint, these are quite simply marvellous.
We are lucky enough to meet Chef Ramdane Djebarri, who brings with him a wealth of world-class experience. His impressive CV includes Momo at the Souk Restaurant in Beirut and Mamounia in Knightsbridge, London, where he was head chef. A consummate professional who’s truly passionate about what he creates, Ramdane is clearly thrilled to be at the helm of Salama’s first international restaurant.
Next, we have a Tale of Two Tagines; both opened with a touch of theatre to reveal entirely different flavour sensations. The Chicken Tagine is cooked with potatoes, olives and preserved lemons and is truly savoury. On the flipside, the Lamb Tagine is all about the prunes, pears, apricots and almonds and is – you’ve guessed it – sweet. Unsurprisingly, they are both delicious.
Even though we decide that we don’t have room for one more bite, the desserts loom large and it would be rude to say no. The Mango Panna Cotta is a symphony of textures. I urge you to try it. The Warm Salama Cookie topped with vanilla and salted caramel ice cream is probably as big as my head. Bring friends to help you finish it. But our winning dessert is the Orange Salad. After a meal as flavour-filled as this one, the orange granita and basil oil concoction is eye-opening and palate-cleansing and leaves us feeling refreshed and ready to start again. Almost.
Finally, it’s time for a time-honoured Salama tradition. Our hands are sprinkled with a few drops of orange blossom oil. We rub to release the aroma. Then we sip hot Moroccan tea. Mmm…perfect.
Famous for its Moroccan and Mediterranean specialities, the original Salama in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera has been wowing diners since the eve of the 21st century. A few years later, a second restaurant along the coast in Cannes boosted Salama’s success. Now, it’s Doha’s turn to experience Moroccan cuisine with a Riviera touch. Wend your way to Al Maha Island and you can enjoy it too.

MAKING MAGICAL MEMORIES
OHLALA’S RAMI KHALIL SPENT A FEW DAYS IN THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ EQS 450 SUV 4MATIC – A POWERFUL, BEAUTIFULLY SHAPED, FULLYELECTRIC VEHICLE JAM-PACKED WITH HIGH-END FEATURES.
It is a little disconcerting how quickly time passes. It seems like yesterday I was finishing school, buying my first car, getting married and bouncing my little girl on my knee whilst she smiled at me like I was the only person in the world. I then made the mistake of blinking. Suddenly, I only have one good knee, I am driving my umpteenth car, I am finally paying off the house and I am preparing to watch my little girl graduate. Sometimes, it’s a struggle to keep up with it all.
Throughout this time, one thing hasn’t changed – my love for all things Mercedes-Benz. Since the days of my father driving me around in his old SL-Class, I have been in awe of this premium car maker and its commitment to creating some of the finest vehicles the roads have ever seen.
OHLALA has been fortunate enough to test drive an array of recent offerings from this world-renowned brand, all of which have proven exceptional. This month, however, we changed things up a bit by bringing the whole family along.
Thanks to the team at Nasser Bin Khaled Mercedes-Benz, we recently experienced the newly released Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 SUV 4MATIC –a stylish four-door, family-friendly, all-electric, all-wheel drive crossover with impeccable exterior and interior designs, along with a wealth of tech and safety features.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
This month, as we were test-driving one of the safest and most impressive SUVs on the roads, we decided to include close relatives in the experience, especially as it coincided with my wonderful daughter’s graduation ceremony (as you can probably tell, I’m a little proud of her).
The day I pulled up outside the family home in the new EQS 450 to chauffeur everyone around town, I watched with satisfaction as their eyes lit up at what was to be their chariot for the next few days.
The brand’s first all-electric premium SUV showcases an innovative and aerodynamic design that turns a few heads on the roads. With its generously modelled surfaces, reduced joint and seamless transitions, I could not help but be impressed by its dynamic proportions and powerful presence.
I enjoyed watching my father-in-law, an avid car enthusiast, stroll around the vehicle, taking in the various features. Like myself, he appreciated the front Black Panel consisting of the standard LED high-performance headlamps connected by a light band, along with the deep black radiator grille.
I watched as he traced his fingers along the round front end, following the effortlessly flowing lines over the steeply raked A-pillar and the roof contour to the rear spoiler, glancing at the stylish 22-inch wheels with fivetwin-spoke design as he did so.
“The EQS 450 currently boasts the most high-definition screens in the industry, with the latest setup looking like it comes straight out of a spaceship.”
Once at the rear, I knew the elaborately designed interior element of the tail lights in the shape of a curved 3D helix would capture his attention as it did mine.
I, too, appreciated the tailgate that merges smoothly into the bumper, where the colour of the black wheel arch linings continues into the lower area of the rear bumper. A high-quality chrome element in the diffuser and the aerodynamically optimised spoiler lip on the underbody further add to the premium feel of the vehicle.
ROOM & COMFORT
As my father-in-law slipped into the front seat, he simply looked at me, smiled and nodded his approval.
As the rest of the family bundled into the SUV, I could again see and hear signs of satisfaction as they took in the comfortable and spacious cabin. Our five-seater version of the EQS 450 provided a generous amount of head, shoulder, leg and foot room for us all, meaning a comfortable few days of travelling.
The luggage compartment also proved generous, providing a minimum of 645 litres of storage capacity, with maximum legroom in place. Thanks to the electrically adjustable second row, this capacity could be effortlessly increased to 880 litres when required. With the second row folded down, you could have up to 2,100 litres to play with. This meant that no matter how many passengers were in the car and how many shops we visited over the next few days, we always had space for more bags.
FAMILY FAVOURITE FEATURES
Setting off along the busy Doha streets, my family’s collective attention shifted to the included tech. The EQS 450 currently boasts the most highdefinition screens in the industry, with the latest setup looking like it comes straight out of a spaceship. The MBUX Hyperscreen is definitely one of the interior highlights. This large, curved unit consists of three screens that sit under a common bonded glass cover, visually merging into one display.
Despite the wide-ranging functionality of this AI-driven feature, its ability to change the inner mood of the car impressed the family the most. There are several moods to select from, all offering an immersive experience. For example, when opting for the Forest setting, all inner lighting of the vehicle changed to shades of green, the sound system played woodland noises and we could even pick up the pleasant smells one would experience out in nature.
OUT & ABOUT
As the family chatted excitedly, expressing their delight in my daughter’s approaching graduation ceremony, I quietly enjoyed the smooth feel of the EQS 450 as the kilometres rolled by. As an all-electric vehicle, artificial engine sounds have been included in the setup – sounds I often forgot were not real.
I had to resist the urge to slip the car into Sport Mode and apply pressure to the accelerator, unleashing the 265kW of power and 800Nm of torque. I would have chuckled to hear the squeals of delight from those in the back as the SUV surged from 0-100km/h in just six seconds. But I was carrying precious cargo and drove accordingly.
STOP & GO
By the fourth day, I realised that the EQS 450 has everything you could dream of for day-to-day running around or an extended road trip. As pleas for a stop for drinks reached my ears, I took the opportunity to recharge the car’s Lithium-Ion battery, even though I still had around 300km of range left to play with.
After plugging the EQS in at an easily accessible charging station, I simply sipped on my coffee, knowing the car’s battery would be topped up in a matter of minutes. The new EQS 450 delivers up to 671 kilometres of range when fully charged, which is more than many petrol-powered SUVs will deliver on a full gas tank.
A SAFE SPACE
The impressive all-electric range of the new EQS 450 proved extremely useful over the next few days as we took advantage of our exceptional new machine to travel all over the city, visiting malls, friends and other family members as we did so.
Each time I set off with my passengers, I realised how comfortable I felt, safe in the knowledge that the EQS 450 boasts a full suite of cutting-edge safety and driver assistance features specifically designed to ensure the safety of my loved ones.
THE BIG DAY
Once again, I blinked, and all too soon, it was the day of the graduation ceremony when I found myself thinking about my daughter and the amazing young woman she had grown into. I realised that as we get older, we begin to appreciate the important things in life like family, safety, security and comfort, all of which the EQS 450 provides in abundance. Style would be another, because let’s face it, life is too short not to travel in style.
Pulling up to the grand hall, I smiled to myself as my daughter and her three friends exited the SUV like they were stepping out of a limo. Other classmates hurried over to greet her, many of whom took the time to comment on the fine-looking SUV. I will always be grateful to Nasser Bin Khaled MercedesBenz for their part in making this such a special day for her.
Sitting amongst the families of the graduating class, watching her up on stage accepting her diploma, I couldn’t have been prouder. I thought how much of a blessing it is to share these moments with loved ones and how grateful I was to have had Mercedes-Benz as part of my history, my present and, hopefully, my future, to make these family occasions all the more special for everyone.

Summer READY
Miss Ohlala highlights essential points to remember during the hottest days of the year.
Summer is here, and our combined issue (July and August) celebrates the hot season in style with cute looks and accessories that send your outfits into vibrant mode. However, there are a few aspects to take into consideration at this time of the year, mainly in the Middle East, to make the most of this period. Miss Ohlala brings you five quick tips:
1. Stay Hydrated – Drinking water is definitely the best way to do it. However, you can enhance it by adding mixed frozen berries or cucumber and mint to add some flavour and boost your intake.
2. Wear Sunscreen – That’s quite a cliché nowadays, but a lot of people forget to apply it in these crucial areas: scalp, ears, hands, feet and lips. Make sure you get them covered to avoid burning your skin when out and about under the sun.
3. Cool Down – Sometimes, you need a fast way to cool down after exercising at night or in the early hours of the day (avoid exercising under the sun; otherwise, you may suffer from a heatstroke). Create your own ‘spa towel’ by soaking washcloths in clean, cold water (you can add a few drops of essential oil for a scented experience), rolling them up, and placing them in a plastic container in your refrigerator. Use them on your face and neck for a cooling effect.
4. Foot Care – Flip-flops are a common summer goto footwear, but they are too flimsy to wear for long periods. Opt for shoes that give your feet more support; you need to tense the muscles to keep flip-flops on, and it can lead to pain in your soles, plus the constant flipping on the heels can cause cracks. Leave them for the pool and beach days.
5. Wear Sunglasses – The same way sunrays can cause burns to your skin, they can also damage your retina, leading to vision problems. Sunglasses are a stylish way to shield your eyes from harmful rays. Choose wellknown brands to guarantee that the lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB light.
