We bring a selection of modest collections by regional and international brands to inspire your gathering nights. We also selected some great eateries in Qatar that have amazing possibilities for a memorable Iftar or Suhour.

I had the pleasure of attending the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition this year, and I interviewed interesting names from the industry. This month, we feature the chats we had with Cecily Morris from David Morris and David Tedeschi from Hublot. There is also a selection of stunning watches and jewellery pieces for you to fall in love with.

Erdem and Barbour (a British clothing brand founded in 1894 and well-known for their waxed jackets and coats) have come together to create a unique showpiece for Erdem's Spring and Summer 2024 creations. The coat is inspired by the collection's muse: Deborah, the late dowager Duchess of Devonshire. Erdem has given the traditional Barbour waxed jacket a couture-like twist with an open neckline in sand waxed cotton. The coat has an exploded trapeze silhouette and is worn with a quilted liner pieced with chintz curtain remnant material. Erdem Moralioglu, the Creative Director, expressed his excitement about the collaboration with Barbour, a British heritage brand that he has always admired and worn. He said that his work has always been about creating pieces with a human touch and that he felt a real connection in their approach to craftsmanship.

Psychedelic Journey

MAX&Co. ventures into a new chapter of its &Co.llaboration series with acclaimed English designer Richard Quinn. Famed for his blend of technology, craftsmanship and classic inspirations, Quinn's &Co.llaboration – MAi. collection merges '60s sci-fi glamour with a dystopian edge, celebrating the crossing of past and future. Iconic floral patterns, geometric designs and innovative materials define the capsule, featuring sumptuous crepe de chine dresses, Space hyphenate Age-style jackets and sequined maxi suits. The palette pops with vivid colours and black, offering a bold mix of textures from leather-effect fabrics to patent leather. A SHOWCASE OF BLING AND TANTALISING TIMEKEEPERS

Celebrating its 20th edition, the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) this year had an array of new launches and key industry leaders that OHLALA’s editor had the opportunity to interview.

The jewellery and watches universe has always been part of our OHLALA pages and, this year, I had the opportunity to visit DJWE for the first time. Held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, the space was transformed into a luxurious, expansive boutique with more than 500 brands represented. With large corridors for easy navigation, it was not only the jewels and timepieces that caught my attention but well-designed booths were created to showcase the brands’ beautiful creations. They made sure to have their signature elements adorning the spaces. TAG Heuer had a Porsche Carrera painted in the same maroon shade as their limited-edition Qatar Carrera watch, an eye-catching and incredible addition to the décor. Vacheron Constantin presented some of their finest artisans creating personalised watch straps on the spot with machinery and paints, a fantastic way to connect the brand with its customers. The pieces presented were luxury watches, necklaces, earrings, rings, tiaras, diamonds, gold and silverware from ready-to-wear to haute couture. Dolce&Gabbana had intricate pieces from their Alta Gioielleria and Alta Orologria collections, but one of the highlights was the High Jewellery Sicily necklace featuring a 100.10-carat, yellow drop-shaped diamond. Hublot are known for their unique designs, but the unconventional-looking MP-10 Tourbillon Weight Energy System Titanium stood out for me. And there were many more striking pieces under the same roof – an outstanding accomplishment from the groups and brands involved. To make the visit even more special, I had the opportunity to talk to and interview fascinating leaders from some iconic brands and understand more about the complexity and creativity behind their extraordinary creations. OHLALA – Can you tell us how watchmaking entered your life? Was there a specific moment when you realised you wanted to follow this career path?

David Tedeschi – Well, I didn’t enter the world of watchmaking; I was born into it. My father, a seasoned veteran with over five decades of experience, was instrumental in sparking my passion for timepieces. Growing up, I spent weekends at his watch stores in Geneva, surrounded by the mesmerising world of timekeepers. It was during these formative years that I developed a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship and intricacy of watches. The precise engineering and attention to detail fascinated me, igniting a desire to pursue a career in this field. While there wasn’t a single defining moment, my upbringing in the world of watchmaking laid the foundation for my lifelong journey in the industry.

OHLALA – What part of the watchmaking process do you find most interesting and why?

David – I cannot mention a specific part as I find every step fascinating for its unique contributions. From ideation to execution, each phase offers its own set of challenges and rewards. At Hublot, our process begins with dynamic exchanges within the programme and product committee, where innovative ideas are exchanged and evaluated. The journey continues through research and development, design, prototyping and model validation. However, being involved in creating special editions for my markets provides a 360-degree perspective of the entire process, making it incredibly engaging and rewarding. This hands-on experience allows me to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship of creating each timepiece, giving us a competitive edge in the market.

OHLALA – How do you think your technical watchmaking knowledge helps you in your position as Regional Director?

David – With my background in engineering and watchmaking, I possess a comprehensive understanding of our products, encompassing movement mechanisms and design intricacies. This allows me to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients, translating technical concepts into

accessible language. Moreover, as we focus on highlighting movement innovation in our new strategy, my expertise bridges the gap between technical details and broader business objectives for our stakeholders. This is essential for Hublot, which is known for its partnerships and dedication to excellence.

OHLALA – Hublot has been part of your entire professional life. How do you feel about working with the same brand for many years? How do you see your relationship with them ?

David – Working with Hublot for over a decade has been an incredible journey. When I joined in 2008, we were a small team of less than 40 employees, renting office space without owning our own building. Since being acquired by the LVMH group, the brand has grown exponentially, with over 500 employees at our Swiss headquarters and nearly 750 worldwide. Despite this growth, we’ve maintained a strong family spirit. Personally, it’s been fulfilling to witness and contribute to the brand’s evolution from my early 20s to now in my mid-30s. We’re entering an exciting new phase where we’re reaching deeper into our craftsmanship, movements and commercial strategy, marking the beginning of another chapter in our history.

OHLALA – What, in your opinion, makes people find a deep appreciation for watches? What do you think causes this fascination?

David – Hublot is a brand that evokes strong emotions – people either love or hate it. We embrace this diversity of opinion, recognising that not everyone will resonate with our brand, and that’s okay. At its core, Hublot is more than just a watch; it’s a lifestyle, a story, and a community. When you buy a Hublot, you become part of our family, mainly because of how we treat our clients and make them feel. In the Middle East, where we have a strong presence, we’ve seen significant interest from both men and women. While traditionally seen as a men’s watch brand, our sales to women are substantial, with nearly equal representation in the region. We’re committed to further developing our strategies to capitalise on this growth potential and continue expanding our reach.

OHLALA – How do you see the future of watchmaking?

David – The advent of smartwatches sparked concern within the watchmaking industry, with fears that traditional timepieces would become obsolete. However, I believe that smartwatches serve a different purpose – they’re more of an extension of your phone, focusing on functionalities like fitness tracking and notifications. While they offer convenience, they lack the timeless artistry and craftsmanship found in mechanical watches. Watchmaking is an art form, transcending mere functionality to become an expression of style and identity. Despite technological advancements, the allure of mechanical watches remains. They represent a connection to tradition and heritage, offering more than just a way to tell time. As for the future, I see watchmaking continuing to thrive, driven by innovation and a commitment to excellence. Through collaborations and strategic developments, brands like Hublot will continue to evolve, remaining at the forefront of the industry.

In a captivating dialogue during DJWE with Cecily Morris, who oversees all brand content, visual merchandising and social media, we explored the DNA of David Morris and what makes it truly unique.

OHLALA – Jewellery has been part of your life since birth, as your grandfather, David Morris, founded the brand. How would you describe your relationship with jewellery and gems? Can you imagine your life without them?

Cecily Morris – Jewellery has been a part of my life since birth, due to the brand’s rich heritage that my grandfather (David Morris) founded in 1962. Despite initially pursuing photography, I found myself drawn back to the brand, where I fell in love with it. Growing up seeing my grandfather and father (Jeremy Morris) in the workshops, I guess it was only natural. Nearly a decade later, it’s more than just a profession; it’s a lifelong passion. Imagining life without gems and jewellery is impossible; maybe when I was younger, I could not understand how remarkable all this was, but now I can’t imagine anything else.

OHLALA – Can you tell us a bit about David Morris? What makes it unique?

Cecily – What makes David Morris truly unique is our unwavering commitment to hand-selecting the finest gemstones in the world. Unlike many others in the industry, we begin our creative process by seeking out the most unusual rare stones available, like the Paraiba tourmalines. My father, who is deeply passionate about this aspect of our work, personally hunts them, ensuring that each piece we create is adorned with the most exquisite gems. We source gemstones from around the globe, all the way from Geneva to Hong Kong. Our sustainability efforts are also noteworthy, as we often repurpose our old pieces (that we find at auctions), giving them new life in our creations.

OHLALA – What is the creative process like?

Cecily – The creative process is a dynamic collaboration between my father, our design team and our design studios. When my father selects the gemstones, he already has a design direction in mind, knowing

what pieces he wants to create, whether it’s a necklace, bracelet or ring. He then brings these ideas to our design teams and provides them with a brief, asking for their input and ideas. There’s always a clear direction regarding a specific client in mind. Our designers are familiar with our clients’ portfolios, allowing them to tailor each piece to complement and enhance their existing collections. They then draw upon their individual styles and expertise to bring these concepts to life, ensuring that each piece is not only visually stunning but also reflects the unique tastes and preferences of our clients. With three designers on our team, each with their own distinct style, you can really see the diversity and creativity that goes into our creations. While many of our pieces are crafted at our flagship store in London, we also collaborate with specialist workshops worldwide, such as those in Switzerland and France, to bring our designs to fruition.

OHLALA – How do you tell the brand story? What do you want people to see or feel?

Cecily – Telling the brand story is more than just showcasing exquisite jewellery; it’s about evoking emotion and creating connections. While some may perceive the process as technical, we believe it’s deeply emotional. Each gemstone carries its own unique characteristics, but the true challenge lies in connecting it to an emotion that resonates with our clients. Whether it’s a wedding, christening or birthday celebration, our jewellery is meant to convey the right emotions for both the giver and the recipient. From a sales perspective, we curate each exhibition with a specific client in mind, ensuring that every piece speaks to their individual story and desires. Our collections are more than just a compilation of pieces; they’re intricate storylines waiting to be explored. From architecture-inspired designs to collections named after natural wonders like Skye, inspired by the Aurora Borealis, each piece tells a tale of inspiration and creativity. Whether you’re drawn to our designs or captivated by the allure of our gemstones, our goal is to create jewellery that resonates with you on a deeply personal level.

OHLALA – What, in your opinion, defines a timeless jewel?

Cecily – In my opinion, what defines a timeless jewel is its ability to transcend time and remain beautiful for generations to come. It’s something that people search for, a piece of jewellery that will retain its beauty forever. We believe that the combination of exceptional design and exquisite gemstones is what truly makes a jewel timeless. But I also feel that the brand’s name is important as well. We’ve got clients who have been loyal to us for generations; they trust Mr Morris and our salespersons.

OHLALA – What is your favourite gem?

Cecily – My favourite gem is the Paraiba tourmaline; they are very different from the rest. For my 30th birthday, my father designed a unique ring with it that represents me so well – fun, youthful and genuinely electric.

Wellness enthusiasts have good reason to celebrate: Fairmont Doha has recently opened the Fairmont Spa located on the fifth floor, right next to the state-of-the-art Pillar Wellbeing, a fitness concept that involves movement, nutrition and recovery. Professionals from each area are available to guide guests and members. Following the same laid-back sophistication seen throughout the hotel, the spa offers an array of treatments in breathtaking rooms facing the vast Arabian Gulf.

But before I tell you about my treatments, I must mention the fantastic facilities available. I have to start with the gym, a massive space with every possible latest piece of Technogym equipment you can think of, from several treadmills to exercise bicycles and weight training machines. You can connect your smartwatch to the equipment and record your progress. I so badly regretted not taking my trainers for a run facing the unlimited ocean view, maybe on my next visit. Another mention goes to the 25m indoor pool with temperaturecontrolled water, perfect for those looking for some exercise in a sleek environment.

To elevate things a little, there is a climbing wall next to the pool for extra fun – such a cool detail. I was also informed that, to complement the Pillar concept, a Pillar Kitchen will open soon, offering nutritional meals. The whole space is open for guests and members, an exciting and complete way to care for your health. Back at the spa, I was invited to get changed and use the steam, sauna and Jacuzzi before my treatments started. As you can already predict, the Jacuzzi had a view of the sea and I spent my 30 minutes there just enjoying the warm water stream jets and staring at the turquoise waves – a fantastic way to start a relaxation session.

It was time for my first treatment, so I took a quick shower and met my first therapist of the day, Hanifah. While walking to my treatment room, she told me that there are eight rooms and they are all named after blue gemstones, such as azurite and sodalite. The couples’ room has a private Jacuzzi. I had my treatment in the Aquamarine Room and, as soon as she opened the door, the ocean view was breathtaking; the massage bed was facing the vast blue, and I thought to myself that this was probably the best view from a spa room that I have seen in my life (and I have done many, many treatments so far in many different places).

Fairmont Spa uses the luxurious skincare line 111SKIN and Hanifah chose the Signature Harley Street Facial for me, which is ideal for all skin types. Some of the benefits are super hydration with a cooling and soothing effect. She mentioned that it is also known for using a topical botox serum called Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel NAC Y² (a patented antioxidant complex) as one of the steps in the therapy, which is applied with a small and smooth wand in specific lines on the face.

Hanifah started by cleaning my complexion with the Vitamin C Brightening Cleanser, which becomes a foam-like product when mixed with water, followed by Exfolactic Cleanser, a combination of vitamin C and amino acids. After this deep cleaning, she applied the Antioxidant Energising Essence toner made with calming aloe vera and mineral-rich giant kelp. It was then time for the magic wand to show its powers with the topical botox serum. Hanifah pressured the wand soaked in the product onto my skin in specific areas to help the product penetrate. She then massaged my skin with Y Theorem Day Cream NAC Y² followed by Y Theorem Bio Cellulose Facial Mask, which strengthens the epidermal barrier, helping to

calm sensitive skin and diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While the mask released its goodness into my skin, Hanifah gave me a relaxing scalp massage.

After my 60-minute facial, it was time to meet Hafida, my other therapist, for a 60-minute full-body deep massage. She chose peppermint oil, an energy booster with pain relief properties, to perform the relaxing massage and remove all my tension.

The session was as soothing as I expected, and I left in a state of bliss to enjoy a chamomile tea in the tranquil atmosphere of the relaxation room.

I believe we underestimate the power of a me-time moment. Going for a spa day not only improves your skin and body health but also your mental state. It gives you time to disconnect from the outside world and screens and focus on yourself. My face looked incredibly rested with no more dullness, my wrinkles looked faded, and my shoulders felt lighter; however, the best benefit was resting my mind. It’s known that Cantonese cuisine is all about clean and natural seasoning, letting the main ingredients speak for themselves. Sanaa Choudry heads to Hakkasan to try their take on staple dishes.

Founded in London in 2001, Hakkasan boasts 11 restaurants spanning across the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Among these esteemed locations is Hakkasan Doha, nestled within the lush gardens of The St. Regis Doha. Slipping into the restaurant that unveils itself behind a sliding door, we’re immediately immersed into a world of understated elegance. The interior is adorned with rich mahoganies and walnut woods, imparting a sense of intimacy that almost feels like a private affair. Navigating the labyrinthine pathways flanked by dark wood partitions, which are a captivating fusion of modern design and Cantonese motifs, we are entirely transported into a different realm.

On this cooler evening, we opt to take advantage of the terrace seating, surrounded by lush greenery, which is open to the public all year round. The retractable roof serves as a defining feature, which seamlessly integrates nature with the dining experience. The comfortable, square, pistachio green chairs contrast with the dark wood interiors, striking the perfect balance between cosy dining and nature’s embrace.

To begin the evening, Dulleep (the wonderful restaurant manager who really goes that extra mile to acquaint us with the intricacies of the menu) delights us with the new offerings on the drinks menu. Swayed by the fruit blends, I choose the Kowloon Cooler: an illustrious blend of sweet strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, muddled with the sharpness

of apple and cranberry. The juice of lychee and a swish of lemonade bind this together, separating it from the usual mocktails we are all familiar with. Later in the evening, I’m encouraged to try the Virgin Dragon, which combines the unique flavours of dragon fruit with aloe vera to create a surprisingly refreshing beverage.

With that said, let’s discuss the food. The menu on offer is vast and varied, with two key avenues: opting for one of the three set menus on offer or mixing and matching from the array of dishes available. The distinct names of the set menus are each based on an important facet of Chinese culture: the Chrysanthemum, which is a symbol of nobility and longevity; the Lotus, in which the water lily plant is a symbol of truth, purity and enlightenment; and finally the Qilin, a mythical creature that embodies the characteristics of wisdom, joy and celebration. At Duleep’s recommendation, we decide to try the Lotus menu, but with the addition of the crispy duck salad. He mentions that this item’s recipe has been unchanged ever since its first introduction to the Hakkasan menu. Within the first bite, the duck melts onto the tongue beautifully. Each morsel is unique and offers a new texture: crunch from the pine nuts, a sweetened tang from the pomelo and the earthiness from the salad leaves. The bowl of salad is revisited throughout the course of the evening – it accompanies any dish from the menu seamlessly.

Perhaps the most well-known item on Hakkasan’s menu is the dim sum. I’ve been here many times, and this never ceases to delight my taste buds.

Presented steaming hot, we are treated to an assortment of langoustine har gau with black truffle, Wagyu beef with black garlic delicately placed on top, XO scallop shui mai and kippered salmon. The scallop, in particular, is cooked to perfection. Hakkasan demonstrates a fantastic way of presenting meat that envelopes the tongue and melts almost immediately.

This is no truer than with the jasmine tea smoked Wagyu beef ribs. Syrupy and sticky, they nearly fall from the chopsticks and each strand of beef is rendered into sauce in the mouth. Rounding off the small eat section (as they call their starters) of the Lotus menu are the crispy tiger prawns, each encased in unique and somewhat sweet crispy wheat flakes.

Now, onto the main dishes. The stir fry with lotus root is completely fascinating. Prior to this evening, I had never tried lotus root – crunchy and soaked in flavour with a hint of black pepper, it accompanies the crispy hamour and spicy prawn curry seamlessly. Again, we revisit this throughout the mains. The prawn curry is a firm favourite. Served with the edamame fried rice, each mouthful is spicy yet velvety due to the addition of almond cream.

By this point, we are bursting at the seams, though it’s never easy to say no to dessert. Whilst the milk chocolate hazelnut parfait is crispy, crunchy and creamy all at once, it’s the mixed berry cheesecake that steals our hearts. A crunchy base with a perfectly smooth creamy cheese filling, all topped off with the tartness of a strawberry sorbet – it is divine. The plate is devoured, and we return home filled and satisfied after another winning meal from Hakkasan.

OHLALA SPENT THE DAY IN THE VOLVO C40 RECHARGE TWIN MOTOR –A FEISTY, FULLY-ELECTRIC VEHICLE WITH PLENTY TO OFFER.

Volvo is a brand that prides itself on being at the forefront of design, safety and sustainability. This well-respected Swedishbased vehicle manufacturer has committed itself to an electric future, recently unveiling several new all-electric vehicles. Thanks to the team at Volvo Cars Qatar, OHLALA got to experience the newly released Volvo C40 Recharge – a stylish, fully electric crossover with impeccable exterior and interior designs, along with a wealth of tech and safety features.

FUTURISTIC EXTERIOR

Our first impression of this model was that it has a futuristic look, both sleeker and more powerful than its predecessors. Demanding attention at the front end is the covered grille with body-coloured grille frame and insert that endows the C40 Recharge with a distinct visual update. We loved the beautifully crafted bodyline of the flanks, running smartly from tip to boot, with convex and concave surfaces harmonising with the shaping of the bonnet. We found the distinctive, frameless door mirror covers in glossy Black Stone to emphasise the exclusive character of the car, with the 19-inch, five-spoke Black Diamond Cut wheels hinting strongly at the on-road intentions of this Scandinavian gem. Although the C40 Recharge looks like it means business at the front end,

the fastback style roofline at the rear provides the model with its sporty prowess. Everywhere we looked, exterior elements seemed to have been refreshed, including the distinctly Volvo rear lighting arrangement running on either side of the tinted rear window, from roof to tailgate.

SUSTAINABLE INTERIOR

In the C40 Recharge, Volvo have created their first all-vegan interior with no animal-based materials. To us, all elements, trims and finishes felt solidly crafted with a first-class feel. A high-tech, dark-tinted, laminated glass panoramic sunroof protects passengers from glare and UV radiation while ensuring natural light throughout the cabin.

The space in the cockpit has been used effectively, with everything in exactly the right place and enough space to keep front occupants comfortable. We loved the feel of the adaptive power steering wheel and appreciated the multiple storage areas and smart fastenings throughout. Our favourite internal design feature was the visually pleasing graphics on the dashboard and front door panels, which were directly inspired by the Abisko National Park in Sweden. The contours of a topography map of the park were traced and used to create an abstract digitalised design with a layered pattern. The inclusion of LED backlighting creates an atmospheric, three-dimensional effect.

DIVA DRIVES

The hands-free power tailgate ensured effortless access to the luggage compartment and we easily expanded the 15 cubic feet of cargo space to 49 cubic feet by folding the rear seating flat. This option makes the C40 Recharge a practical and versatile vehicle – great for longer trips and dayto-day use.

TOP-QUALITY TECH AND SAFETY

Volvo have equipped the new C40 Recharge with high-quality nine-inch centre and 12-inch driver displays.

We discovered that the brand has partnered with Google for most of their systems, meaning we could easily access many well-known apps like Google Assist, Google Maps and more through Google Play. Furthermore, the C40 Recharge receives automatic over-the-air updates. Despite being an Android-based system, it’s also compatible with Apple CarPlay. Other must-mention tech features include wireless phone charging, the advanced air purifier, the useful Volvo Car app and the superb Harman Kardon Premium Sound System.

As a Volvo, it’s no surprise this SUV has a full suite of safety and driver assistance features. The technology assisted us by adapting the car’s speed to maintain a safe distance behind vehicles. It also kept the SUV centred in our lane. The C40 Recharge will even come to a complete stop if the driver does not respond to a major incident.

POWER, PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY

When we first entered the vehicle, we could not locate the ignition. Initially confused, we eventually realised that there is no need for a key, as the power adjustable driver’s seat has a weight sensor in it that automatically starts the car when the driver is there. Being an electric vehicle, the startup makes no noise. Only once we shifted the car into Drive and applied pressure to the accelerator could we confirm the car was actually running. Fortunate enough to be test driving the C40 Recharge Twin Motor, our model packed two electric motors, one mounted on the front axle and one on the rear. This surprisingly capable setup produces 300kW of power and 660Nm of torque, allowing us to surge from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.6 seconds. It also means a top speed of around 180km/h.

Once able to stop chuckling at the sheer might of the vehicle, we began to appreciate the finer nuances of its performance.

The C40 Recharge is clearly a competent vehicle. Along with its powerful acceleration, we appreciated the confident handling, proficient cornering abilities, adept braking system and overall enjoyable ride.

Volvo have stated the dual-motor C40 delivers a respectable EPAestimated range of around 444 kilometres when fully charged. It should take around eight hours to charge your C40 from flat to full using 22kW AC charging. Public fast charging stations provide a 10% to 80% charge in around 28 minutes.
