The editor

My favourite story this issue BEAT THE HEAT Soaring temperatures and extreme humidity can make any sane person crazy. Researching all the cool and entertaining things to avoid the infamous Doha heat made me look forward to August and all the indoor activities that, surprisingly, the Qatari capital has to offer.

Melting Away… Dina Kabbani Editor

ave you felt it yet? Endless trickles of beady sweat across your forehead, sunglasses that fog up as soon as you’ve stepped outside, palms that go all sweaty and clammy, and finally trying to breathe but you can’t because suddenly the air is too thick? Yes folks, the peak of summer heat has reached the Doha shores and we’re all running for cover. I remember first when I got here how horrified I was at how freezing every place was. How my jacket never left my bag. I was always prepared for what I feared would be my worst enemy: air-conditioning. Now, I can say I dare stay anywhere that doesn’t have the thing blasting on full; yes folks I’ve grown some tough skin. This month the FACT team has put together just the issue to keep you cool and perspiration free all August long! Our Beat the Heat Guide (pages 24-29) will show you how to survive the blistering Doha weather with the top indoor activities available around the city. With over 38 things to do, you won’t face a boring moment this month. For those planning their Eid vacation, we show you where to go 4

abroad and what to do if you’re staying back home (pages 16-19). To help you with all the planning and last minute details, we checked out the top travel apps (pages 42-43), so get out your smart phones and start downloading. We figured no vacation is complete without a great travel wardrobe, so don’t forget to check our packing tips as well; they’ll have you looking fashionable all throughout your holidays (pages 56-57). Our man with a plan, a driving one to be specific, Ali driver takes the new Jeep out for a spin giving us the low down on what to expect from the cool car (pages 46-48). Motor junkies will enjoy this review! Last but not least, we hit the capital for some food tasting. Our Chef ’s Table (pages 66-67) and Venue Review (page 68) have us hopping around Doha finding the best places for a terrific dining experience. So remember folks if you pile on the sun block, stick to the shade and drink as much water as possible, you’ll definitely make it through the month and live to tell the tale… Stay cool people!!

News from the FACT Penthouse Here at FACT we’ve all noticed a few pounds gained here and there from all the Iftar and Sohour events we’ve been to this Ramadan. So we’ve set ourselves a challenge: to get fit and move our lazy behinds before the month is over. Wonder what the results will be? We’ll keep you posted!

SNIPPETS OF THE MONTH

...Or was in town, and we had the lucky chance to have a quick chat with two of the talented performers of the upcoming September show Drallion to find out a little bit about the talent behind the act.

Senior Vice President & Regional Director of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Middle East Mr. Guido de Wilde quoted on the fourth annual initiative of feeding cab drivers for Iftar all around the Middle East.

You’ve probably heard that Cirque du Soleil is returning to the capital with a bigger and more extravagant show; we know that it’s definitely the buzz around town! Drallion, which fuses traditional Chinese acrobatic arts with the famous circus’ multidisciplinary approach, is bringning us a show where east meets west. We go behind the scenes with two of its best. Tara Catherine Pandeya: Oceane, Goddess of water The very beautiful and exotic looking Tara is a second-generation dancer. “ I grew up following my mother who was a classical Indian dancer everywhere whether it was to rehearsals or performances, I’d end up sleeping backstage most of the time” she tells us. Although born and raised around the art of dancing, the San Francisco native decided to take another path studying political science, opting for something more stable. “In time though I had to surrender to my path, dancing was just in my blood.” She continued to perform as a soloist dancer, and got her big break when a video of her work was sent to Cirque du Soleil from an adminstrator from her choreography grant. “I’ve been playing the part of Oceane now for the past three years, a character who moves like the ocean and is just as temperamental; one moment she is soft and sweet then fierce with anger” says Tara, “It all really depends on the elements I’m interacting with in the show.” And her favourite part of being part of Cirque du Soleil crew? “As a dancer I’m constantly inspired from my fellow artists, its made me grow in ways unbelievable”.

“Iftar for Cabs says a small thank you to cab drivers throughout the region who continuously work to provide transportation services for our guests”

Vladik Myagkostupov: Juggler Hailing from a family who were all part of the Moscow Circus, performing came naturally to Vladik Myagkostupov. “ I’ve been travelling with the circus since I was 18 months, at 6 I started taking dance classes, but it was when my father started teaching me how to juggle that I found my true passion” Vladik tells us enthusiastically; you can definitely see the excitement he shares for the art as he speaks. The young juggler, who joined Cirque du Soleil back in 2006, incorporates a fast-paced performance in Drallion, where he interacts with the different elements in a modern dance choreography all while juggling balls and clubs. “I love that I get to meet new people from different backgrounds and cultures here in Cirque du Soleil, we are at the end of the day one big crazy family” he says on a light nostalgic note.

MOVING TO THE USA: Qatari homegrown news channel Al Jazeera is set to launch Al Jazeera America on August 20, creating a bit of a stir amongst the notoriously voiceless American news scene in the US.

200,000,000,000 DOLLARS: The amount of money Qatar is spending on construction projects to host the 2022 World Cup. Part of that sum will go towards a new airport, roads, transportation, and metro system.

GO: Get your tickets now: prices range form QR250 QR2,000. A limited number of Premium and Front Row tickets are also available for all performances. Tickets are available at www.cirquedusoleil.qa SHOW SCHEDULE Weekday

Up in Flames

Paris played witness to a massive fire that engulfed a historic French mansion owned by a member of Qatar’s ruling family, severely damaging it. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Hotel Lambert mansion was considered to be one of the most well preserved testaments of mid-17th century French architecture. Such a shame!

The country is ecstatic over the new emir, as well as the new national holiday that came with the handover. As the former Emir put it so well: It’s time for the new generation to take over.

THE DOHA MINUTE

“Helping people regain their zest for life is a very special and rewarding thing to be a part of” We caught up with boot camp trainer and city newbie Daniel Smith to see how he is whipping Qatar into shape. Read on to find out… PROFILE Who: Daniel Smith Job: Personal Trainer & BootCamp Instructor From: Originally from the UK (Birmingham). Was living and working at Bondi Beach, Sydney working as a Personal Trainer before moving Been in Doha: 3 Months What brought you to Doha?

The Opportunity to be a part of the boot camp that a friend, from my time spent in the military was setting up. And also the huge potential for work opportunities in the fitness industry due to Doha’s rapid growth, excessive lifestyles of the people here, and an unsaturated health and fitness industry. Tell us more about what you do…

Previously, I served 5 years in the Royal Marines Commando’s back in the UK and after that worked as armed security on ships protecting them from Somali pirates. I am now working as a Freelance Personal Trainer, training people at their homes, compounds, or gyms. Also working in Group fitness for PeteCollinsFitness as a bootcamp instructor at Doha College and soon to be in a second location at the new school open in West Bay Lagoon. Where is your favourite place to workout here?

Out of the places I have been to so far I like the facility at the Sheraton. I train a few clients there and it is a nice place to train. I’m hoping when the weather cools down I can train outdoors which I like very much. What are the things you love about the Qatari capital?

I have described living in Doha, particularly West Bay, as like living in the future. I love that anything is possible here in Doha. If you have an idea, some drive and the right attitude you can make things happen here. Describe your ideal day off here… My ideal day off would involve a good hard workout to get the endorphins pumping. Relaxing by the pool in the sun, and a nice BBQ and drinks with friends. What to eat in this heat? • You might be tempted to go for that freezing box of ice cream at the back of the freezer, but don’t! A healthier alternative is delicious fruit popsicles, that are just as cooling and contain half the calories! • Water based fruits add a fun way to get one’s much needed daily dose of water. Our favourite picks would definitely have to be watermelon and grapes. Yum! • Did you know that eating super-spicy food is good for you during the heat? It helps make the body sweat, thus cooling it down. Hot sauce anyone?

Fact sat down with The Ritz Carlton’s famous Circuit Trainer Andrew to pick his brain on the best ways to get fit this blistering August in Doha. DRINK YOUR WAY COOL Sweating? Can’t bare the trickle of salty water dripping on your brow? We show you how to cool off with a refreshing summer drink. Watermelon Limeade Recipe 8 cups chopped seedless watermelon 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice 2 tbs sugar (plus 2 tbs more if needed) Mint leaves Start off by pureeing watermelon in blender with lime juice and sugar until smooth. Add more sugar, if needed. Transfer puree to a big pitcher then cover and chill until ready to serve. Before drinking stir properly then pour into tumblers over ice and garnish with mint. Voila!

With most people working long hours, everyone wants a quick workout routine to get fit. Ideas?

High intensity workouts are the best way to achieve fast yet lasting results. Not only will you burn calories while working out but it’ll create an after burn effect, that will have you burning calories throughout the rest of the day. Also one should cut out carbs, artificial sweeteners, and fizzy drinks; exercise and healthy eating go hand in hand. What is your favorite exercise routine?

A: I love using bodyweight in my workouts. I feel it offers great mind and body connection. For summer, what are your top five exercises?

The clean & press is a favourite of mine; it’ll activate 90% of your muscles. Basic burpees are great for conditioning and including pushups to your workouts will help strengthen your core and upper body. Don’t forget the all-important cardio like running, cycling and swimming. Last but not least, sprints are a perfect high intensity exercise to burn fat in no time. With the Doha heat so intense, what should one keep in mind while exercising?

I tell my clients to workout early in the morning or when the sun goes down to avoid over heating. Also don’t forget to drink at least 3 liters of water per day; we don’t want anyone getting dehydrated. FACT AUGUST

How to Survive: Must-know tips to make it through the Doha heat EMERGENCY SERVICES

999 10AM-3PM

MUST KNOW In the event of a heat emergency call emergency services (999) and try to cool the victim until help arrives TREATMENT Water, water and more water! Yes water just might save you from the below headaches; it’s that simple honestly. Also keep body temperature down by wearing loose clothes and sticking to the shade.

WATCH OUT FOR Temperatures reach their highest between the hours of 10am – 3pm

terms YOU NEED TO KNOW

DRINK MORE H2O will be your saviour this month we guarantee! Gulp down as much as you can of this life surviving liquid, to compensate for all that yucky sweating throughout the day.

Be able to recognize the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and true heat emergencies

INDOORS ANYONE? We know it’ll be difficult to stay inside most of the time but avoiding direct exposure to the sun is a must. Remember to pile on that sunblock and stick to shady areas! SMALLER IS BETTER Diet is key to keeping cool, so don’t go eating large protein-rich meals that can increase metabolic heat and warm the body. LIGHT & AIRY The horrible heat and sticky humidity beg for loose fitting clothes and cotton based apparel. Stick with light colours as well to reflect the sun. FLIPTY FLOP Finally, a good excuse to wear those flipflops! Go ahead and dump those closed-off shoes and give your feet a much-needed breather. BEFRIEND THE AC Yes we know it’s weird but this month the temperature-cooling machine will become your best-friend! Crank it up at home or head out to public buildings like malls, cinemas or local library to cool off.

You Should Always be Carrying… Bottle of Water Keep with you at all times to sip from throughout the day Sunscreen with High SPF Apply a good amount before you walk out the door, but don’t forget to reapply a few hours later for extra protection. Sunglasses It’s good to shield your eyes from the powerful summer rays Hat If you insist on braving the great, yet scorchingly hot, outdoors then cover your head! Panadol Keep on hand some painkillers in case you get any heat-related headaches

Heat Edema Swelling in the legs and hands, which happens when you sit or stand for a long time in a hot environment. Heat Exhaustion A result of working or exercising in hot weather and not drinking enough liquids to replace those lost. Heat Rash Develops from excessive sweating thus leading to red pimples and blisters popping out on the skin. Heatstroke When the body fails to regulate its own temperature and reaches 40C and higher. Sunstroke is a medical emergency and one must seek immediate treatment! Heat Syncope Fainting due to overheating; considered another stage in the same process as heatstroke.

Art

The Create & Inspire 2013 competition, in collaboration with Qatar UK 2013, set out to find 10 young artists from the Gulf who could take their views on community and transform it into works of public art. FACT caught up with Engy and Louna, the two winners from Qatar, to find out all about their whirlwind experience. How did you first hear about the competition? I try to involve myself in the art scene here in Doha so I subscribe to various newsletters. For me it was the picture in the email about the competition that caught my eye: a selfie for singer and actress Asmahan. Next thing I know I was shortlisted! What was the inspiration behind your project? My piece was one that I had done before but never completed. I wanted to explore the cultural prejudice associated with the Battoolah, the Qatari face veil. A lot of people don’t understand it and end up criticizing it while in the west they’ve even banned it. Since I’m both an expat but have grown to call Qatar home, I wanted to raise awareness. I wanted to show people that the women wear it not because of infringement but because it’s a cultural thing. So what did you end up creating? I’ve created a piece all about the Battoolah, showing that it is not a “Mask” from which women hide behind, but it is a thing of beauty one, that adds mystery. I took inspiration from Rene Magritte’s work “This is not a pipe, this is a picture of a pipe”, mine translates to “This is not a mask, this a Battoolah”. The background of the piece is all leather and the design is inspired from Henna draawings.

How did you find out you had won? And what’s next for Louna? The whole process went smoothly from the start; I was pretty lucky. I got the news over the phone and can’t wait for the UK. What’s next? So much! I’m going off to university, which I’m excited about, thinking of maybe starting a band when I’m there.

a popular sport and become quite the art form. From there I decided to create a road sign about it, and ended up making a sticker, which I stuck to a road sign in Gharafa, to warn people that in that particular area there was usually “2 wheeling” going on. How did you find out you had won? I sent an email to ask if the results had been announced yet, because I hadn’t heard back and was so sure I had misinterpreted the competition and sent in something completely wrong. A week later on a random night I got a message on my phone, needless to say I was over the moon. What’s the next for Engy? I’m happy where I am right now, but I definitely plan to get into furniture or product design. You see graphic design is a stepping-stone for me, I can’t wait to build up on it and discover so much more.

Engy Hashem Age: 25 Job: Working mom How did you hear about Create & Inspire? I work for Mathaf so we usually get circular emails about different competitions and things going on. I saw the flyer online and was instantly attracted to it but with a huge workload on my plate I decided to keep it for next year. Then the age limit for the competition caught my eye; applicants had to be 16-25 and I’m turning 26 in September so I was like this is it, I have to do it because it really is now or never for me. What was your thought process after? When I got the flyer, deadline was in five days! Freaking out I just racked my brain for basically any idea. I decided I wanted to look at public art in a different way, and not conform to what most people here in the Gulf do, which is copy the west. Tell us about your project Doha’s hot climate makes it so difficult for people to walk outside, hence public art does not get very many visitors. So I wanted to figure out a way to grab people’s attention while driving, get them to look at public art while they went along their ways. I went with the whole driving concept and ended up with my project about “2 Wheeling”. “2 Wheeling”, what is that?! The terminology means to flip a car on 2 wheels; it’s a Qatari acrobatic form of driving that has turned into FACT AUGUST

peninsula in the Arabian Gulf, Qatar has always had a deep relationship with the sea; its people have earned t heir livelihood on pearling and fishing for years. These days, the deep blue has made Qatar the world’s largest Liquefied natural gas supplier, acting as a transportation channel for the largest fleet of LNG vessels in existence. Coming together in a-first-of-its-kind venture, Qatar UK 2013 and Qatargas have sent Doha based, Msheireb resident artist Ben Barbour aboard one of Nakilat’s Q-Flex, state-of-the-art Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) tankers on a journey from Qatar to the UK. The idea behind the 20-day voyage is to record and follow the historic pearl trade routes and have Barbour capture, in his art, his different observations from the interesting journey. Celebrated and known for his wonderful documenting of Qatar’s journey, Ben Barbour is an artist/curator for Msheireb Properties on the ‘Echo Memory’ project. His work “New City” saw him receive high accolades for documenting Msheireb, the earliest suburb of Doha, through sketches as the area underwent extensive regeneration. Through his voyage to the UK, Barbour plans on capturing the parallels between Qatar’s former pearl fishing industry and its natural resources one. He plans on also bringing to light the various stories of the people aboard the tanker, retelling their various tales in addition to organizing workshops for them. The talented artist will also get the

amazing opportunity of experiencing the route the tanker takes as well as the operational side of the vessel. The unique journey will end with an exhibition at Katara Cultural Village in October and another one in Wales later this year. The aim for these events is to show people how Qatar has transformed, its economic development being one of unprecedented likes. The country has gone from depending on

the natural resources provided by the sea to greater economic diversification and the creation of a knowledge-based economy, one that is forecasted to be complete by 2030. GO: Check out Ben’s journey on ww.facebook.com/QatarUK2013 as he posts updates. You can also check out his work in the upcoming exhibit this coming October.

To be loved By Michael buble

WHAT’S IT LIKE DEEP down every one is a Buble fan... yes each and every one of you has, at some point, wiggled, slow danced or cried along to one of his songs. This is now the rather handsome star’s eighth studio album. Strong and mature and oozing with emotion, this is best listened to with all the doors shut and the volume on high... and here’s why. Big band arrangements are a favourite for the singer and the first track ‘You Make Me Feel So Young” sets a classic tone for the album. He may not have that same masculine oomph as Sinatra but his smooth bartone makes you tap your foot and

snap your fingers, all the way through. “It’s A Beautiful Day” is the lead single and one of the four tracks that are originals. Cheery modern pop stylings and production changes make this a catchy tune. (You would have probably heard it a thousand times already on the radio.) Classic such as “Who’s Lovin You”, “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” and a duet with Reese Witherspon “Something Stupid” are sweet, successful sentiments. Buble will, without a shadow of a doubt, go down as one of the most successful male jazz singers of our generation. We are simply head over heels.

WHAT’S IT LIKE: THINGS looked promising back in 2010 when these two guys hit the scene. Ths second album occupies a somewhat murkier world than their debut. Operatic learnings have been abandoned for theatrical ornamentations and the anthemic track ‘Miracle’ is reminiscent of Depeche Mode and Coldplay. “Only You” takes you back to the older days where they temporarily stop running from sounding too 80s. “The Crow” is a standout ballad however but fans should prepare themselves for disappointment.

WHAT’S IT LIKE: HANDS down these guys are Nashville’s darlings, and their fourth album fulfills its title where each song is sun-kissed, expensively constructed and bound to bring in the monies. “Downtown” is already a number one country smash across the pond; “Goodbye Town”’s bassline pulls you in a direction both surprising and urgent, as does the chorus of the Grammy-winning hit “Need You Now”. Saying that, there are some vitalities missing such as personality, detail and need. But then, why bother when you’ve a sound this bright?

WHAT’S IT LIKE: SIXTEEN years ago the Spice Girls emerged and now here is, what seems to be, their replacement. Caring about the here and now, these four girls were put together on the X Factor and have caught the music world by storm with “Wings” as a starter. “Change Your Life” is less convincing while Missy Elliot helps welcome funk, soul and sass to “How Ya Doin?”. Although the girls are fresh, the rest of the album goes a bit OTT on drama with rather mundane constructions. Wait for the sale.

BAHRAIN’S BEST READS THIS MONTH BY GENRE

Fiction

the fall of arthur By j.r.r. tolkien

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: THIS is the world’s first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien which tells the amazing and extraordinary story of the final days of England’s legendary hero, King Arthur. This title recounts in verse the last campaign of King Arthur who, even as he stands at the threshold of Mirkwood, is summoned back to Britain by news of the treachery of Mordred. Arthur must rouse his knights to battle one last time against the rebels and foreign mercenaries. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Powerful, passionate and filled with perfect, vivid imagery, this book reveals Tolkien’s gift for storytelling at its brilliant best. Originally composed by Tolkien in the 1930s, this work was set aside for The Hobbit and lay untouched for 80 years! Now, thank goodness, it has been rescued and edited for publication by the author’s son Christopher.

By alan johnson

By christopher fowler

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: ALTHOUGH his childhood was not so much difficult as unusual, this story is essentially about two incredible women: his mother Lily (who battled poverty, domestic violence and loneliness) and his sister Linda (who had to assume huge responsibilty at a very young age). WHAT’S IT LIKE: Played out against the background of a vanishing community living in condemned housing. the story moves from post-war austerity through the race riots, Chelsea in the swinging sixties and eventually becoming a teen husband and father. This is one man’s story but it is also a story of England and West London slums. Written with a spirit of generous acceptance, of humour and openess.

Non-Fiction

the futre By al gore

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: THE former U.S. Vice President gives us an inconvenient truth for everything - a frank clear-eyed assement of six critical drivers of global change in the decades to come. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Ours is a time of revolutionary change that has no precedent in history. Al Gore brings us passion, intelligence and knowledge. An alarmingly and potentially accurate account and summary of how our lives may be lived in the not-too-distant future.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: IT is the late 1970s and Christopher Fowler is a film freak, obsessively watching lousy films in rundown fleapit cinemas. Longing to put his dreams on the screen and become a famous scriptwriter, he heads for Wardour Street, the nation’s equivalent of Hollywood, with an armful of scripts. Arriving as the industry falls to its knees, he finds success against the odds. WHAT’S IT LIKE: Ghastly, hilarious and moving. Those are perhaps the best three words to summarise it. This story takes you on a journey through the back-end of the British film industry that turns into a search of friendship and happiness. This author made his name with his first memoir, Paperboy - his second is sure to confirm his place in life as a writer. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: From the man who brought you District 9, this blockbuster has had little hype pre-release - surprising when it contains some of Hollywood’s finest. The summer movie season means distributors are scrambling to attach trailers to their big fall releases... amid all that long-distance hype drops a new extended trailer for this film; a film that has now got our full and undivided attention... and that’s just after watching 197 seconds worth. The settings may look somewhat familiar to

those featured in the director’s previous release and the key plots may be rather heavy and revealing (among other things), but that’s not to say there are no plus points about this movie. Damon’s character, who is terminally-ill, cracks a few jokes amidst a serious sci-fi plot of robots, revenge and desperation. The studio wants you to know how big the scope of Blomkamp’s vision is and after watching this trailer, you will be left aching for the main attraction.

[SYNOPSIS] The SMUrfs 2 follows another adventure installment from the little blue guys. The Smurfs team up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been kidnapped by Gargamel since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer’s newest creation - creatures called the Naughties - into real Smurfs. Back again this time is Neil Patrick Harris but expect appearances from Hank Azaria (as the baddy), Katy Perry, Christina Ricci and Jayma Mays.

We’re the millers tells the story of a veteran pot dealer who creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of banned goods into the U.S from Mexico. Comical in places, you would hope to expect more from popular Jason Sudeikis... but then you hear his co-star is Jennifer Aniston and all hope is lost. It’s ok Emma Roberts is equally as irritating.

The butler D: lee daniels C: jon cusack, forest whitaker, lenny kravitz, Oprah winfrey, Robin Williams, Minka Kelly

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: This film revolves around the true story of an African-American butler who served eight U.S Presidents at the White House. Based on the story, ‘A Butler Well Served’, follow the life of Eugene Allen (Forest Whitaker) who was the Presidential butler from 1952 to 1986. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: You know a film is worthy of a cinema trip when you get goosebumps watching the trailer. Well, even after watching it twice, they are still there. Many of us live through certain periods in history; this is the story of a man whose life revolves around the situations and historical movements of the United States. It is a film about honour, loyalty, family, trust and change. We will see you in front of the big screen the day this is released. WOW.

Kick-ass 2 D: jeff wadlow C: aaron taylor-johnson, jim carrey, chloe grace moretz, lyndsy Fonseca

WHAT’S IT ABOUT: We say a very warm welcome hello to the costumed high-school hero Kick-Ass. This time he joins with a group of normal citizens who have all been inspired to fight crime in costume. Meanwhile, the Red Mist plots an act of revenge that will affect everyone Kick-Ass knows. WHY IT’S WORTH WATCHING: Not only is this the sequel to the biggest creator-owned comic of the decade, this is the follow up of one of the most comical, entertaining and watchable movies from the past ten years. Bold statement but SO true. With all the controversial scenes from the comic book, watch these guys in action save the world in their own weird yet unique and hilarious way. Bring it on! FACT AUGUST

Superpleased:

“It bridges the gap between phone and tablet rather marvelously”

The latest update from Sony in the world of smartphones really pushes the boundaries of what a ‘smartphone’ can really be. With a 6.44-inch screen, the device is huge but fits more comfortably in your hand than you might have previously expected. And for all those spec-fans out there, this is the first phone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chip: a quad-core processor clocked to 2.2GHz… no idea? Basically a huge leap forward in productivity, HD video and performance. The magnetic charging port on the side is an effective little addition, as is the return of the waterproof element – a series of little doors that seal in the ports… a factor intriguingly not used on the headphone jack however! A huge plus is the CPU speed. Snappy as anything we have played with before, you can flick between apps and browsing the Internet in no time at all – almost to the point that we can’t keep up! Oh, we aren’t complaining, especially as the screen 44

quality is a mark of improvement from its predecessor. As for the battery – the bane of every phone owner’s life (especially if you have the iPhone 5 or Samsung S4) – this 3000mAh power pack does not disappoint, especially when you consider the size of the phone. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is pretty much a phone that wants to be a tablet. While many of you (probably Blackberry owners) will look at the new device and recoil in horror at its larger dimensions, those of you looking for a larger screen will be jumping at the chance to buy this bad boy once it hits the shelves. Will it take over the smartphone market? Well it’s a definite possibility as the power and size combo is currently unique. The Japanese brand is obviously keen to show it is at the forefront of technology. It may not be a mainstream device but it bridges the gap between phone and tablet, both decent devices, rather marvelously.

JAWBONE UP Our every day activities have just got a little bit more interesting with the Jawbone Up band. With the promise to take a “holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle” to “keep you moving forward”, this nifty little gadget keeps track of your sleep and how much you move, while you input what you eat as well as your mood. Available in three sizes, the band fits around your wrist perfectly. In actual fact the best way to describe it is as a wrist-

wrapping computer… but be careful, as it’s not totally waterproof (just resistant up to one metre). But unlike other gadgets, this one has no visual interface – just one symbol which only lights up to tell you if it’s in ‘day’ or ‘sleep’ mode or if it’s charging. One of the band’s best features is its accuracy on tracking your snoozing patterns. When you are ready to nod off, press the little moon symbol and when you wake up, press the same button. You

can even set a smart alarm which gently vibrates you back into the world of the living. Uploading your data is simple, just plug it straight into your headphone jack on your phone (make sure you have downloaded the appropriate UP app) and watch the graphs appear in front of you. With a calorie counter and step tracker as bonus features, you really can’t go wrong with this tiny device. Nutritional tips and lifestyle advice pop up to tell you when you haven’t been working hard enough or perhaps when you have been sitting still for too long. There are even ‘high five’ messages if you have had a busy, active day. A complete library packed full of food makes it pretty simple to select your meals of the day – although this can be somewhat time-consuming. You can even bore all your mates on Facebook or Twitter about your progress (don’t be surprised if you suddenly lose some cyber-friends however). Saying that, this little piece of technology is the ideal starting point for those looking to lose weight or change their lifestyle.

Our Mystery Motoring Expert, Ali Driver, really wants one of these bad boys! When we drove the last generation of the Grand Cherokee back in 2011, we were blown away by the looks, the comfort, the on-road performance and, most importantly, the off-road performance. This 2014 model had a lot to live up to! In reality, there have only been minor changes to this later model, most notably to the lights at both the front and rear of the car, and some minor tweaks to the styling. Inside, the options are more or less the same as well, with a slightly revised infotainment system, with the 6-CD changer under the centre armrest instead of in the dash, and more 46

connectivity with regards to MP3 players, USB ports, and so on. You still get the in-dash hard drive that can store all your music internally. Also present on this model the impressive Selec-Terrain, which is the adjustable transmission for various off-road conditions, including mud, snow, rock, and so on. What was included on the last model we drove as an optional extra was the Quadra-Lift air suspension system that can raise the ground clearance by a few centimetres. This did not come standard on this particular trim level, the 5.7l HEMI V8 Limited model, although it does on the higher trim levels, the Overland and the Summit.

Who is Ali Driver?

1. He lives in Qatar and says he grew up on the streets of Doha, but we think he’s actually from a rich family.

2. He says his car skills are self-taught, but we’re sure we’ve seen a certificate from the Losail International Circuit on his wall.

We decided to test this new Jeep in the same places that we drove the last one to make a fair comparison. The first spot was a small axle-bender that climbs a small hill in the desert. It’s a relatively easy obstacle that most vehicles make it up, but it’s a case of how easily and smoothly the car in question climbs the hill. Or so we thought… I pointed this new Grand Cherokee at the hill, set the terrain selector to ‘rock’ and applied a small amount of power, trusting the traction control to scramble its way up, just like last time. To my surprise, the new Jeep got halfway up, and after some amount of scrabbling and lurching, I realised to my horror that, despite the differential lock

3. He drives cars better than anyone we know (but don’t ever tell him).

4. He claims to be able to change a regular car tyre in under four minutes, but we’re sure that’s only when his wife helps him.

and terrain selector, I wasn’t going anywhere! Let’s try again… I reversed back down and set it to ‘mud’, figuring that the surface was very slippery and maybe this would distribute the power more evenly. Once again, it was a fail. Before trying again, I inspected the hill, and realised that rain and bad weather had eroded the man-made obstacle to the point where the tyres were just eating away at the humps and bumps, and not giving the vehicle any traction. This was going to be more of a challenge than we thought… New strategy: go balls-out! This time I tackled the hill with more gusto, and turned the wheel left and right to help the tyres find a better line. Sure enough it worked! FACT AUGUST

The new Jeep is great for the roads in Qatar

That was more like it. The Jeep had been presented with a real challenge, and had risen to the occasion. Next up, we took it to some of our favourite soft-sand spots to see how it tackled this type of terrain, which is VERY common in the Gulf. As expected, the ‘sand’ setting combined with the huge amounts of power from the 5.7L V8 had the Jeep powering through the powdery sand like a champion. We even stopped in some particularly deep spots, and set off from standstill, and the traction control used the torque to gently ease us out of the sand with no fuss at all. I was constantly aware of the low ground clearance of the front bumper. I was afraid it was going to end up grinding on some slope, but it wasn’t an issue. If you’re going to be using the car for serious off-roading, I’d recommend picking a model with the Quadra-Lift air suspension for that extra capability. Once again, the Jeep Grand Cherokee ticks all the boxes! It looks great, is smooth, comfortable and impressively agile on the road, but most important of all, it completely dominates off-road! 48

A Modern

Take

Topshop’s high summer fashion line has clean-cut designs that embody everything we love about sporty-glam garms here’s more on one of our favourite highstreet brands...

with the contemporary style. All about touch, it mixes transparent sheers with rich black patent leather. Layering is key to the trend, the motto being: the more the better. Washed out whites reign supreme as base for colour, while hints of vivid orange and pink pop out for some statementmaking wow factors. In the end it’s all revolves around geometric cuts and a soft aesthetic, perfect for those who love the versatility of sportswear and the classic-ness of modern everyday pieces.

Advocating no frills fashion, Topshop’s Modern Nights is a straightforward collection of modern pieces with a city slick vibe. So if you’re into pastels, sweet chiffons and over-the-top prints, please take the nearest exit. You see this season, Topshop’s girl is cool and effortlessly styled. She brings together a hint of the future with a dash of sporty luxe, making simple dressing progressive yet uncomplicated. She has no time to deal with things like colours and paisley patterns; she’s fast and on the go, too cool for school. For summer, it’s all about smart dressing with an edgy vibe. Hence, the collection’s sporty luxe is born, a marriage of athletic with glam, getting rid of the hard edge that comes

THE CHEFS TABLE

Chef L Stuart Collins Calling all carnivores, it’s time to feast! We know that might sound a bit barbaric of us but we think we’ve found the place to go for a steak; Executive Chef Stuart Collins shows us why. 66

FACT AUGUST

ocated on the 28th floor of the famous Tornado Tower, The Anvil Rooms is everything a steakhouse should be with deep rich mahoganys and reds offsetting perfectly plush leather and modern décor associated with any meat haven. With big windows looking out on spectacular views of West Bay, dining there is a real treat for the eye especially on evenings, when the capital comes to life. Of course behind every great kitchen is a great chef and here lies no exception. Working as the Executive

THE CHEFS TABLE

Chef for both The Anvil Rooms and La Varenne, Chef Stuart Collins is the Englishman behind the creative and delicious food at the famous duo. “I started off washing dishes in the beginning of my career, not very glamourous” he tells us chuckling, “You’ve got to start somewhere though.” And we guess it did pay off, the Chef now holds proudly under his belt jobs with Michelin-starred chefs Gordon Ramsey and Michael Caines; an impressive feat for such a young man. His culinary journey began at Michael

Caines’ Gidleigh Park in Devon, where he worked as sous-chef for four years and was followed by consecutive jobs with celebrity hothead chef Gordon Ramsey, at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in both London and New York, then ending with Maze in the Big Apple. Now the lucky people in Qatar can get a piece of the much sought after chef, and what better place to do that than in The Anvil Rooms. Our experience began with a house favourite, the king crab cake, whose recipe the Chef told us was taken from a South Jersey native. The dish itself came delicately decorated with a celery and shallot aioli, almost too beautiful to touch. A hamachi ceviche followed thinly sliced so light it was easily devoured, its soy and truffle dressing a nice touch. Then it was time for the piece de resistance: a 16oz ‘Greater Omaha’ ‘USDA Prime’ Ribeye. Big enough to cause an artery blockage yet mouthwatering good one can’t resist, we’ve never seen a piece of meat this big before. “We leave our steaks to soak in a water bath, to trap all moisture and keep the flavour in” the Chef tells us. Succulent, tender and cooked to perfection, medium rare of course, every bite melted away like it was butter. In no time the once almost impossible-to-finish steak disappeared off our plates. The sides that come with it are also no

a joke; three small ramekins of truffled macaroni and cheese, glazed beetroot romanesco, and anchovy and chilli butter all fight for our attention. For those who aren’t big meat eaters don’t fret, the menu features a few options that will satisfy any culinary palette. We went for the braised halibut with a side of sun-choke puree, broccoli, almonds and anchovy, and it was absolutely delicious. On to dessert, we all know that no proper steakhouse would be complete without a cheesecake on their menu, and lucky for us The Anvil Rooms was smart enough to include that all time favourite on the menu. We could not just stick to one dessert but were tempted to try out a very funky and interesting spin on the famous Pina Colada drink. Needless to say we left the place with full bellys and another trip scheduled! GO: Call 4499 0685 to reserve. Opening Hours: Sun, Mon-Thurs 12pm to 10pm Fri-Sat 12pm to 11pm

riving up to Aspire Park, it’s hard not to miss the place; colourful and loud it stands out in the green background of its surroundings with its log house exterior. Once out in the parking lot, you’re greeted by two classical all-American automobiles parked outside the joint. It feels like you’ve been taken back in time, standing outside an actual diner from back in the day. Stepping inside, you’re transported to an early years burger house, complete with memorabilia that will have you nostalgic for that old school era. Think pre-war and cool vintage and that basically sums up the interior, with antique chairs and mismatching tables for furniture, vintage coke bottles, old telephones and cash registers strewn around for décor. A projector plays against one of the main walls, beaming out music videos for Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi and co. The Burgerry has managed to notch down the diner atmosphere, hitting the nail on the head with the Americana feel to it all. Time to order, we check out the menu, which is written both on big black chalkboards hung above the cashier counter and in coolly illustrated paper 68

menus. The best part about it is that it’s simple; the place offers your regular everyday burger as well as the world popular cheeseburger, two house speciality burgers, hotdogs and a chicken burger for those who don’t like meat. Once you’ve placed your orders, you’re given a small black buzzer to take back to your seat; the little square thing vibrates to tell you your order is ready. We barely sit down in our cosy booth and the thing starts shaking. Hopping over to get our trays, we grab THE BILL FOR 2 B.Special

some sauces from the cool condiments stacked atop the counter. Burgers in hand we all bite in, and muffled words of “yum” and “this is so good” can be heard in between bites from all around the table. The B.Special burger we ordered features a Black Angus beef patty smashed thin and crispy on the griddle, nestled on a bed of crisp lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles, draped with melted American cheese and sandwiched inside a soft bun. Fighting for the spotlight was the B.Majestic, with its Special Wagyu Beef so soft and tender, complimented nicely by the aged cheddar, fresh salad toppings and the house’s secret creamy mushroom sauce. All burgers were generously seasoned, allowing the beef flavour to really pop with each bite. The buns were your unseeded standard burger buns, fresh and slightly sweet, they socked up the burger juices nicely. We were impressed by the meat to bun ratio, which was perfect, and held the juicy patties together. Onto the hot dogs, which came nicely packaged in cool designed boxes. The Brave Dog was everything you’d expect a hot dog to be; a classic sausage covered in fried golden onions, sweet relish and mustard, all doused with aged cheddar and American cheese sauce, looked like your typical ball game dog, yum! Of course in between all this beef madness the fries were not forgotten. The must-have burger companion were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and salted to perfection. And thanks God for the drinks that helped wash down the hefty but delicious meal. The freshly squeeze lemonade was nicely sweetened, while the Burgerry shake was everything a shake should be: creamy, chocolaty, and with crumbled pieces of Oreos it was the perfect. Flown all the way from New York’s famous dessert haven Junior’s, we had to try the Original New Yorker cheesecake, which was creamy and smooth, and left you longing for just one more bite. Verdict: A must-stop for any burger fanatic!

The programme’s activities focused on ocean science and exploration, stewardship activities, cultural exchanges, and the development of youth media projects. All students got to document their experience through photography as well as video and got the great opportunity of being mentored by the staff from JeanMichel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society Media Camp and American University’s Centre for Environmental Filmmaking.

Charity and sports are always a great combination when they team up, proving that you can do good for others while having fun as well. Proving just that are the Qatar Sandstormers. The team of cyclists, who representied Qatar in the 2013 Global Biking Initiative, have raised over QR160,000 for the Beitak Beiti initiative, in association with the Sheikh Eid Charitable Foundation. The amount raised will be used to support more than 200 poor and disadvantaged families from all nationalities, helping them to get the basic necessities like refrigerators, air conditioners and cooking stoves to live a proper life in the capital. The cyclers competed in a tough 850km journey from Paris to Neuss covering France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany to raise awareness for the Beitak Beiti initiative and secure the funds for their pledge. In the end they came out as the team who raised the most funds. Sponsors of the team were IWC, Qatar Airways, Moseco Qatar, Vodafone Qatar, Salam International, Abdullah Abdulghani, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and 222 Agency, as well as several individual sponsors.

Qatar has always had a link to Hollywood through the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, but now it also has one to the world famous Broadway Theatre through Carnegie Mellon University, known for its fantastic drama program back home in Pittsburgh. The top-ranked USA University, with a campus in Qatar’s Education City, has recently achieved theatre-land glory through the 67th Annual Tony Awards. Eight of CMU’s alumni took home awards in six different categories, making a new school record and an impressive milestone for any single institution. We’re sure the students in the Qatari campus over here are super proud of their fellow peers.

I’ve never gotten such a warm welcome before as I did upon entering the Saray Spa. Two beautiful Filipina ladies welcomed me in, surprisingly knowing who I was from the moment I set foot into the quiet city haven; I was impressed. In for one of the Spa’s signature body treatments, I was taken to undress and unwind with a cup of herbal tea at their dimly lit relaxing lounge before we got started. 15 minutes later and I was escorted to my treatment, where I got a short briefing on what the scrub would entail. Pearl, my masseuse, explained that she had heated the bed for me to help stimulate my skin, and as I relaxed face-down I felt the gentle heat envelope my entire body. She started off with a full body exfoliation using black Arabic coffee, black seeds, and Dead Sea salts. In circulating motions, she scrubbed the mixture all over then had me take a shower to clean it off. I already was feeling softer and smoother than I usually did. Known for its antioxidant properties as well 84

as being a natural stimulant, the Coffee mud rub was next. I was covered with it from chest to toes, its smell making me crave the caffeine infused drink. She then wrapped me up in special plastic, it felt sort of like cling-film to be honest, and slowly covered me in a tight electrically heat blanket and left me for 10 minutes. The cocoon like procedure is supposed to elevate your senses and transport you to a higher level. During that time I got a lovely head/face massage that had me half dozing off; I tend to do that a lot I’ve realized. Heading to the shower again, I removed the brownish mud off my body and got back on the massage bed for the final part of the treatment. Working her magic once again, Pearl gave me a mini massage using a citrus-based cream to soothe my skin from the scrubbing process. As I headed back to the lounge to relax once again with my tea, she asked me to avoid showering completely until the next day so that my body would absorb the cream. The verdict? I absolutely loved the body scrub which is an excellent cellulite buster. Go try it!

On behalf of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture, the British Council and Qatar Museums Authority have teamed up to present the Old Doha prize, a designing competition for Qatari architects from 17-24 November 2013. Five teams will have to research and explore how to address the changing urban landscape of Old Doha, as well as incorporating the heritage and history of the area into their designs. The winning team will win a grant of £15,000, and will give the winners the chance and resources to implement the ideas explored in their design residency in the form of an exhibition, publication, installation, research project or film. Encouraging architects to develop contemporary ideas in response to Doha’s historic city centre, the Old Doha Prize will focus on the neighbourhoods of Al Asmakh and Najada in the heart of Old Doha, and will be founded on the principle of ‘Living Heritage’.

It’s with saddened hearts we bid farewell to QAWS, the Qatar Animal Welfare Society, which has been home for many abandoned animals throughout the years. After battling for the past month to relocate its shelter, the rescue facility is no longer operating. We do hope though that something might happen in the future to bring them back.
