GUIDING PRINCIPLES DEVELOP GLOBAL CITIZENS FOSTER MULTI-LANGUAGE ABILITY SHAPE ACTIVE LEARNERS DELIVER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

02

Dear FAIS Community, Welcome to this year’s Annual Report on Philanthropy. This publication celebrates the incredible generosity of everyone who so willingly gave their time, treasures, and talents in order to continue to deliver our incredible learning opportunities in this most unique 2019-2020 school year. This past year has been like no other year in my lifetime, and our community rallied together to support each other in many ways. Our Annual Fund remained strong, we held a virtual Gala that raised a record amount, and this included raising money for an unprecedented faculty and staff bonus. All of this was possible due to so many hearts and hands. Thanks to all of you! It is all of you that enable us to develop global citizens, foster multi-language ability, shape active learners, and deliver academic excellence. Because of the philanthropy of our community, we are able to prepare our students for their futures through immersion and inquiry based programs. We are also able to adapt our programs to deliver an excellent comprehensive distance learning experience. This is truly a gift. As we embark on a truly unique school year, it continues to be the generosity of all you--our parents, trustees, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends--that enable us to deliver our mission in innovative, creative, and adaptive ways. I am genuinely grateful to be a new member of this wonderfully committed and generous community, and I look forward to our future together. Sincerely,

Scott Hardister

Dear FAIS Community, This was not the year I imagined when I took on the role of Director of Development at FAIS, but I could not be more proud to be a part of this community. Though we were disappointed to cancel the Gala that our volunteers worked so hard to bring to life, our resulting Virtual Community Gathering brought in over 30% more in net revenue than the year before, thanks to the generosity of our families in supporting the Special Appeal. On top of that, the Annual Fund raised $40,000 more than last year. And all of this in the midst of a global pandemic. The generosity of our community can be seen in every aspect of our school. From the commitment of our volunteers to find unique new ways to bring our community together, to the parent-run food drives to support the greater Portland community, to the art project coordinators who drove projects from home to home so all the students were able to contribute to the final project. Every day, I feel the generosity of spirit at FAIS. Thank you for your warm welcome and your wholehearted support of this wonderful school. I can’t wait to see what this next unique year will bring. Sincerely,

Shawna Foster Director of Development

We gratefully acknowledge all donors who contributed to the French American International School from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020. Contributors whose gifts were received after June 30, 2020 will be acknowledged in next year’s Annual Report. Every effort has been made to ensure that this report is accurate and complete. Please report any corrections or omissions to Development at development@faispdx.org.

VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP The commitment of our dedicated volunteers plays an essential role at FAIS. Not only do our volunteers model responsible, service-oriented behavior to our students; they are the wheels that keep so many of our traditions alive. Our volunteers serve in classrooms, recruit and welcome new families, and coordinate events that strengthen our community. Thank you to ALL of our volunteers. Your wholehearted dedication to FAIS is so greatly appreciated.

The Annual Fund is the School’s most critical fundraising effort and ensures that our school has the resources necessary to advance our mission. Each gift goes to support the greatest need of the School, so that we can continue to provide dynamic opportunities and experiences to all our students. Gifts to the Annual Fund are 100% tax deductible. Chair: Jennifer Martindale

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY GATHERING The Annual Gala is our largest community building and philanthropic event. This year, we transitioned our in-person gala to a Virtual Community Gathering featuring our incredible student art projects. Our special appeal supported financial aid and a teacher/ staff appreciation fund, and raised over $150,000! Gala Chair: Melissa Wilmont Gala Co-Chairs: Danielle Hosmer and Vanessa Calvert

FÊTE DU VIN Each fall, this wine event celebrates the rich culture and growing talent of Portland’s food and wine community. Bringing together the incredible flavors of Oregon’s best wineries and local ingredients, the event unites the diverse and progressive community that surrounds the school. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from wine purchases come back to FAIS. Fête Co-Chairs: Christine Chang and Margo Litwin

JF Genay Fund for Financial Aid Established in 2009 — $138,287 Established by the Board of Trustees in recognition of the eleven years Jean-François Genay served our school as Head of School, and to perpetuate his belief that FAIS should be accessible to a broad spectrum of students.

Patricia C. Inskeep Library Fund Established in 2009 — $150,366

Provide financial aid to improve the socio-economic diversity of the student population

Established by parent Sarah Inskeep to support the library program in honor of her mother.

2019-2020 ANNUAL GIVING

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY GATHERING This spring, FAIS friends and family came together to celebrate our student art and raise important funds to support our community during a time of financial uncertainty. The FAIS Virtual Community Gathering, which replaced the annual gala due to COVID-19, drew over 180 families to participate and support the School. This community event was an opportunity to join together in a spirit of celebration and appreciation for the French American International School. Contributions during our Virtual Community Gathering supported keeping the FAIS community whole in two crucial ways: financial aid to retain current families and welcome new families; and an appreciation fund for teachers and staff — who pivoted on a dime to create stability, continuity, and a positive learning environment for our students in a time of chaos In the week leading up to the event, families drove through campus to see all of the student art projects — LIVE from the comfort of their car at the Drive-Thru Art Gallery. This was a celebration of the hard work that all of our students put into the art projects throughout the year, and was a wonderful reminder of what we can create together. The virtual event was hosted by Johnna Wells of Benefit Auction 360, who created a wonderful flow and sense of engagement for the community. Families bid on art projects, entered the raffle to win a designated parking spot on FAIS campus, and gave generously during the moment of giving. Thank you to everyone who helped this event raise over $225,000 for FAIS.
