Mandeep Nagi, Design Director, has thrice won the Elle Decor Design Award in India for fabric. Shades of India’s product range include apparel, fashion and interior accessories, and home furnishings. 18 JAN. / FEB. 2017

highlight of this year’s Lakmé Fashion Week will be the special evening event on February 2 when Mandeep Nagi, Design Director of Shades of India, show cases her summer collection with girls from Kranti modelling the clothes. Kranti, the Mumbai based NGO, has won international recognition for rehabilitating girls from the red light area. They will tell their stories while demonstrating their pride and independence in the exquisite clothes from Mandeep’s Bagh collection. The idea for the event came from Gautam Vazirani, Fashion Curator with IMG Reliance for Lakmé Fashion. He has long been an admirer of Kranti and of its Director Robin Chaurasia. He wanted Lakme this year to include a spectacular event that linked social responsibility with fashion. He turned to Neeraj Gaba, popularly known as “Mr. Gaba” of India’s Next Top Model, a well-known television personality to script and direct the show. Mandeep has made a point of not using professional models in her photoshoots. For her highly successful Cinnamon collection, she chose Kamla

as her model. In normal life Kamla – tall, beautiful and with naturally superb poise – works as a house help. Mandeep wanted to demonstrate that even girls from the most modest backgrounds can prove their independence and hold their heads high. She followed the same path with her recent Nazraana collection where the clothes – inspired by the courtly life of old Lucknow – are again modelled by a girl from an unprivileged background. For Gautam, Mandeep was thus a natural choice for his project. The blend of elegance and bohemianism in her style and her unconventional choices in showcasing her apparel made for a perfect partnership. The Bagh spring and summer collection draws on similar themes that inspired Awadh and Nazraana with echoes of courtly life combined with a stylish bohemianism. Fabrics are fine hand woven cottons, silks and precious metallic weaves. A major feature is the revival of vintage lace reflecting the western influence on dress in Lucknow in days of old. Colours evoke the warmth of spring, of early flowers in blossom.

White, orchid tint, haze, almond, rose pink, are used with soft gold and silver metallic. Silhouettes are inspired by traditional kurtas and pajamas and by re-interpreting saris with a bohemian look. In all the styles, the layering of fabrics, textures and colours brings surprise. As Design Director of Shades of India, Mandeep has won national and international recognition for her creativity and innovation in both Home textiles and Apparels. She and Shades of India have gathered design awards for Home in India, Paris and New York. She has increasingly carried her work into textiles for Interiors. Her own apartment – for which she created the interiors – is currently showcased on the cover of the newly revived Living Etc magazine. Shades of India has its own flagship store in the Meharchand market in Delhi – a lifestyle shop showing both Apparel, Accessories and Home. It also has outlets in most of the major metropoles. It has just launched a new Home collection in the US under the brand name ‘Neem’ which has already won accolades in the US. JAN. / FEB. 2017 19

M

anish Malhotra’s glittering new collection of occasion wear lends a sparkle to pre-wedding functions such as the sangeet and mehendi. Also as a first, in association with Etihad Airways, the show premiered as a Virtual Reality experience. The Manish Malhotra Winter/Festive collection spotlights Indian craftsmanship combined with modern silhouettes for a stylish, young bridal entourage. The fashion house showcased its signature resham threadwork, clustered sequins and intricate hand embroidery on dramatic trails and off-shoulder capes, alongside floral motifs. Replete with avant-garde twists – there were jacket-saris; lehengas paired with sheer crop blouses and draped dupattas on contemporary anarkalis. Elaborately detailed long tunics worn over cigarette pants and majestic, flowing backless gowns effortlessly brought the classic and contemporary together.

Statement accessories, including bejewelled belts and pill-box clutches added a glamorous edge. Crafted in silks, sheer net and lace; in hues of pure white, baby pink, lime green, lilac, Champagne nude, metallic grey and honey mustard, the ensembles were worn with elegant fine jewellery by Anmol Jewellers. For the modern gentleman, the collection presented textured velvet bandhgalas, structured jackets and vests paired with Jodhpur pants. The elegant outfits were styled with pocket-squares, jewelled buttons and embroidered silk scarves. Speaking about the collection, Manish Malhotra said, “Lakmé Fashion Week is very special to me – both my label and my association with LFW turn eleven

this year. Label Manish Malhotra is also the first Indian brand to present a Virtual Reality experience with Etihad Airways. Every season, the muse for my collection has been the young Indian woman, who carries her traditions and modern values with ease. I am excited to present a collection that suits her style, as well as her bridal entourage.” Mr. Jaspreet Chandok, Vice President and Head (Fashion) – IMG Reliance said, “Manish has had a long standing association with Lakmé Fashion Week and we can’t imagine an event without him. This show is special, as it is the next step towards embracing technologyu JAN. / FEB. 2017 23

The show will be transformed into a virtual reality experience where the viewers will get an immersive experience like never before.” Speaking on the opening day of Lakmé Fashion Week, Neerja Bhatia, Etihad Airways Vice President Indian subcontinent, said: “Lakmé Fashion Week is very exciting for us in India, as it has marked another step in Etihad Airways efforts to enhance its positioning as the global airline for the fashion industry and further elevate Mumbai on the international fashion calendar. Working with Manish Malhotra has also been a fantastic experience showcasing the best of his latest collection proudly presented by Etihad Airways.” Concluding the show was the stunning Shraddha Kapoor in a resplendent deep green velvet lehenga paired with an embroidered crop blouse, accompanied

BRIDAL COUTURE

S

ANS SOUCI’ is the name of the Bridal Couture collection presented in Paris by Kaviar Gauche. Translated, the French title means “Without a care”. For the 2017 season, the designers Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and Johanna Kühl sought inspiration less in the famous palace of that name, but more in the carefree emotions the sentiment inspires. Moments of joy serve as the inspiration for the new collection “because for us there is nothing more valuable than the special lightness of being and joy of life,” say the designers. Kaviar Gauche showcases a collection for modern women who live their lives with self-determination, free of constraints, while maintaining their free spirit at all times. These sentiments are transposed onto the ‘SANS SOUCI’ dresses in the use of stretch fabrics and flowing silhouettes – ensuring optimal wearability. The 24 exclusively ivory-coloured looks beguile once more in their playful use contrasts and innovative diversity – in addition to graceful volant elements the designers show laidback off-the-shoulder looks and clean-cut cape styles, long and flowing or shorter for a more modern

contour, paired with A-line trouser legs – a symbiosis of classical femininity and cool elegance. Filigree 3D daisy embroideries adorn metres of the translucent silk tulle dresses and capes – despite their modern opulence, they are more reminiscent of the simple pleasures of a country dance on the flowering meadows of home. The daisy motif also makes a reappearance in the headpieces by Cécile Boccara, conferring a goddess aspect to the ethereal look. As in the preceding collections, in addition to filigree fabrics like chiffon, organza and silk tulle, French lace is also integrated. Off-the-shoulder details add a modern laidback touch to the princess-style corsage-looks, with the slipped straps hinting at sensual moments. Flowers on a water lily pond, peacock elements, ears of corn and heart motifs – lace and embroideries inspired by nature and romance are the core elements of the new collection. The highlights of the season are four couture dresses with sumptuous details. The voluminous silk tulle gowns, embellished with Sans Souci embroideries, spell out the basic tenets of the collection. alentine’s Day is just around the corner! All over the world hearts beat faster, since there’s no better opportunity than Lovers’ Day to demonstrate one’s feelings with a meaningful little something. beautypress reveals the best gifts for him and her.

42 JAN. / FEB. 2017

ROMANCE FROM ROME Love is in the air on the 14th of February, but the tradition of Valentine’s Day is actually based on the tragic stories of Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni who found their end as Christian martyrs. Caesar Claudius II had abolished marriage during his rule, because he thought married men were less efficient soldiers. While Valentine of Rome wedded couples despite the ban, Valentine of Terni was imprisoned and eventually decapitated because of his healing abilities. It’s not certain whether these two men were in truth the same person. But Lovers’ Day (and love) the way we know it today, only exists since the end of the Second World War.

RED, HOT LOVE Since then, red roses symbolize the feelings between lovers. But if you want to surprise your lover with more than flowers this time, here are some clever ideas: How about a lipstick or nail polish in the color of love for your chosen one? These two beauty helpers are among women’s top 4 favorite beauty products. We’ll bet you that you can’t go wrong with these. But if you’re still not totally convinced, pair them with an invitation to dinner. She’ll sure be happy to show off the new lipstick and nail polish!

WHAT MEN’S HEARTS DESIRE Finding the right gift for a man is often easier said than done. Gadgets, accessories for his car or maybe a watch? Trust us, what is sure to make an impression is a gift basket with a range of personal care products. You can put it together yourself as you see fit, or you can pick a set from the beauty store. This way, Prince Charming will show up to every date super well groomed. Skin cream, aftershave, body wash or perfume are sure to put a smile on his face on Lovers’ Day.

THE SCENT OF LOVE It’s a known fact that when two people fall in love it may well have to do with scent. And the sales records are there to show that love doesn’t go only through one’s stomach, but also through one’s nose: The business sector of body care and beauty products alone can boast with turnover of approximately 62.46 billion U.S. dollars every year, and that only in the United States. Perfume is the king of all gifts! But in order to choose the best scent for your beloved, you should always consider their personality and style. Fresh scent creations are better suited for athletic personalities, while subtle, flowery scents are often a wonderful fit for romantic-playful types. JAN. / FEB. 2017 43

ou take care of what you love; when your skin struggles to produce enough lipid to keep it moist, then it is time for you to give and extra hand to your body, pamper your skin with some extra care and make it soft and glow again. And here’s how it works…

FROM HEAD TO TOE If the skin lacks in moisture or lipids, can be easily spotted during the cleansing rou-tine: If the skin immediately feels tight, parched or even itchy after taking a shower or a bath, this could be a sign that it’s not able to produce enough lipids. After facial cleansing, these signs may show up as well. If you feel related to some of this signs, it’s time for some special care; starting under the shower: Many shower oils or creams contain rich formulations and ingredients such as shea butter or almond oil that moisturize the skin while showering. Nourishing body creams and lotions with refatting ingredients, favor the skin with moiture while promoting its own lipid pro-duction since their components are very similar to the natural skin lipids (ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol). 48 JAN. / FEB. 2017

WINTERIZE YOUR HANDS & NAILS Our hands are especially sensitive during the cold season as the skin is very thin and barely has subcutaneous fatty tissue. Chemical substances such as aggressive cleansing products or excessive hand washing, take a heavy toll on this sensitive part of the body. To protect it from the daily exposure and harmful impact, make sure to keep a tube of hand cream handy and use it several times a day.

ingredients, that are proven to have a depigmenting effect, can even protect our hands from premature aging and reduce the first signs of aging.

SUGAR, OIL AND BUTTER FOR SILKY SOFT SKIN Not only our hands tend to dry out during winter, the same applies for our elbows and knees, as, in comparison to the rest of our body, they don’t have sebaceous glands that produce lipids. Here the motto applies “two are better

than one”: With an exfoliant (i.e. with sugar scrub), sloughing away dead skin cells, and boosting blood circulation at the same time. This will also increase the absorption capacity of the new skin beneath. Whether you are dealing with flaky, patchy or “dry as a snake” skin; body oil and butter work as its best when massaged into the skin. Chapped lips are also common during winter time, since they have very few sebaceous glands and their skin is thin and sensitive, they need some extra care to stay soft. JAN. / FEB. 2017 49

When the skin’s protective barrier is destroyed, in the worst scenario, the body’s own defense may overreact and cause an inflammatory reaction. As a consequence, this may lead to an eczema. Dermatologists have confirmed that there’s an increase of hand eczemas cases during winter season. Rich hand creams not only provide important nutrients but also leave a protective film on the skin that helps prevent the outermost layer of skin from drying out. Precious ingredients such as glycerin or urea moisturize our skin, whereas hand creams with UV protection and

2017 DESIGN TRENDS 1) Named the 2017 Pantone Colour of the Year,: “Greenery” is meant to represent refreshment and revitalization — something we all could use in a complex social and political environment, thus the colour that will dominate the year 2017 is the cheery shade of green you’ll see in home decor, fashion and commercial design. known portals such as Amazon, eBay and Flipkart. 2) High end luxury homes: redefining the user’s lifestyle with state of the art technology, products and materials. Making the home not only livable but also luxurious. 3) “Urban living” lifestyles: people now want to be close to everything- work, home, shopping, restaurants etc. : whether they are in a major city or suburb. Thus also leading to the trend of weekend getaway homes or 2nd homes which are home away from home. u JAN. / FEB. 2017 59

4) Technology: Technology has massively enhanced the process of design by enabling creative ideas to become tangible in ever speedier time frames. It’s exciting to see thought processes translated into imagery or layouts but equally important is the use of interactivity and motion. Using technology for faster and precise outputs in construction. 5) Recycling: People are looking for more sustainable furniture and interior ideas. Reusing, repurposing and upcycling will remain a key element. We live in a world immersed in technology and disposable items so people are looking for a balance. 6) Minimalistic Bathrooms: the trend is going in the direction of smaller and more private spaces. . The shape and the size of toilets sinks and bathtubs are considerably reduced, not only to fit better in the smaller urban apartments but also to introduce a sense of restrained elegance and intimacy. So smaller does not mean less – there is no compromise with its comfort, style, and functionality. 7) Modular Furniture system: Modular furniture allows us to personalize interior design in no time without spending lots of money. Multipurpose furniture design give us the freedom to save the space saving ideas for decorating, reflecting the interior trends. 8) Art-Inspired Wall art/wallpaper: the truth is wallpaper or wall art can make or break a room, rendering it timelessly chic or permanently tragic. A focal point is able to attract the eyes into the space and give the viewers a sense of what to expect. In this case, a piece of wall art can be positioned as a focal point for your room. 60 JAN. / FEB. 2017

BlueBerry CreamCake RECIPE 2 cups flour 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp lemon zest 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp cardamom (hmmmm…. the aroma is so good) 1 & 1/2 cups cream (optional. because this is vegan, you can leave this) 1 & 1/2 cups blueberries 1/3 cup oil 2 tbsp vinegar

Strawberry Ricotta Purse RECIPE 1 & 1/2 tbsp powdered sugar Approximately 15 raisins 2 small cardamom pods 1 cup Ricotta cheese 5 – 6 Fresh strawberries Chocolate syrup 1 tbsp Melted butter Fillo (Phyllo) Dough

Follow instructions on the fillo dough container for thawing. In a blender, puree the strawberries without water. Mix some of it with ricotta cheese and raisins. Remove the seeds from the cardamom pods and powder it. Sprinkle it in the ricotta mixture. Add about 1/2 tbsp of sugar, mix well and taste. Adjust for sweetness by adding more sugar if needed. The filling should be thick and not watery. If it is watery then it means too much strawberry puree has been added. So, be careful while you add the puree. The filling is ready.Take one sheet of the fillo dough making sure to quickly 66 JAN. / FEB. 2017

cover the rest with a damp cloth. Brush melted butter all over, sprinkle some sugar all over. Repeat the steps until 6 layers of fillo dough. Cut into approximately 5 inch x 5 inch squares.Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Place a spoonful of the strawberry ricotta mixture in the center making sure not too much mixture is added otherwise they will ooze out when covering with the dough. Gather all the sides of the fillo dough and close the mixture in the center forming a purse. Brush the outer surface with melted butter. Bake in the over for about 15 – 20 minutes or until golden brown. 6. Drizzle some chocolate syrup on the serving plate, place the strawberry ricotta purses, drizzle some more chocolate on top of the purses and dust it with powdered sugar. Garnish with fresh strawberry. Serve warm. TIP: Cut a small strip of the dough and go around the neck of the purse like a string in a drawstring purse.

Purée most of the blueberries with some water such that you get 2 cups juice saving a handful alone. Mix all the ingredients well. Coat a round 9 inch pan with baking spray or oil and flour. Preheat the over to 350F degrees. Pour the mixture, put the berries on top batter when it’s a little baked say after about 10 minutes and continue for about 30 more minutes or when you insert a tooth pick no batter sticks to the toothpick. Take it out of the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before removing it from the pan. Serve warm or chilled. Enjoy. NOTE:The name Cream Cake is because the original recipe has cream added to it’s recipe.

Custard Kheer RECIPE 4 Cups Milk 2 Cups cooked basmati rice Custard powder your choice 10 – 15 Red seedless grapes, halved 1 Banana diced 1 Apple diced 1 Orange peeled and diced 1 tbsp butter 1 cup Sugar or as per taste A few strands of Kesar 1/2 cup Pomegranate pearls

Heat a pan. Add 3 cups milk and rice and let it come to a boil. Reduce heat and cook, stirring continuously, so that the milk does not burn. Take

custard powder in a bowl, add the remaining milk and whisk. Heat butter in a pan, add apple, bananas, grapes, orange and one tablespoon sugar and stir. Cover and cook on low heat till the fruits soften. Add the custard powder mixture to the milk/rice mixture and stir. Cook until it thickens. Add the remaining sugar, kesar and stir till all the sugar dissolves. Chill for at least 4 -5 hours. Before serving, Place a spoonful of the stewed fruits into the serving glass, pour the custard kheer over it and sprinkle pomegranate pearls and serve.

RECIPE 1 packet Instant Lemon Pudding mixture. Handful of Blueberries 2 tbsp of sugar 2 cups cold milk – approx.

ering FruityCreations shing &Sweet

Mix pudding mixture and milk and whisk well or follow package directions. Place a few blueberries in 4 ramekins and then pour the pudding mixture. Tap on a flat surface to even out the mixture and to remove any air bubbles. Refrigerate it for about 20 minutes. Then remove from refrigerator and sprinkle some sugar on top. Using a creme brulee torch try to caramelize the sugar. In case you do not find a torch, you can use a broiler at about 300F for just a couple of minutes. Make sure to watch the ramekins under broiler so that the sugar doesn’t get burnt. The only difference you will find between caramelizing using a torch and a broiler is that the pudding will be cold when a torch is used and warm if broiled. Personally, I prefer using the torch and cold version is what is served in restaurants also. Let it cool down for a minute or two. The sugar will get hardened and forms a nice crunchy layer on top of the pudding. Garnish with some more blueberries and rine of lemon and serve.

s the original creator of the minivan more than 30 years ago, FCA US LLC has transformed the segment with firsts – notching 78 innovations through the first five minivan generations. With the introduction of the all-new Chrysler Pacifica, FCA US adds 37 minivan firsts to its portfolio for an unprecedented total of 115 innovations in the segment. “The all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is truly a no-compromises minivan, giving customers everything they need or want,” said Timothy Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands, FCA - North America. “We started from the ground up to design the most technologically advanced minivan, which offers bold styling, class-leading ride and handling, and unmatched fuel economy, with the Pacifica Hybrid delivering up to 80 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in city driving. The all-new Chrysler Pacifica was thoughtfully designed and engineered to provide unsurpassed levels of comfort, convenience, technology and functionality, making it the perfect combination for modern families.”

72 JAN. / FEB. 2017

ENGINEERING The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica was re-engineered from the ground up on an all-new platform, delivering class-leading ride and handling and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). Its body structure is the lightest and stiffest in its class, making it more responsive with lower levels of body roll and enhanced agility to absorb and distribute road inputs. Class-leading aerodynamics contribute to the Pacifica’s unsurpassed fuel efficiency.

The all-new Pacifica is engineered and executed to deliver a “vault-like” interior environment with low levels of wind noise, road noise and related vibration/ harshness characteristics. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is standard on all models to further heighten the Chrysler Pacifica’s refinement factor during a comfortable daily commute or an extended road trip with family and friends. The Chrysler Pacifica boasts the largest interior volume in the segment, with clever storage, available eightpassenger seating, and – a requirement with all generations of FCA US minivans – the ability to fit an 8 x 4-foot sheet of plywood.

POWERTRAIN The all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivan features a choice of two powerful, efficient and advanced powertrains – the segment’s first hybrid vehicle, and the next generation of the award-winning Pentastar V-6 gasoline engine, which is mated to a segmentexclusive TorqueFlite nine-speed automatic transmission.

paralleled Levels of ctionality, Versatility, hnology and Bold Styling. The Pacifica Hybrid, the industry’s first electrified minivan, will deliver an estimated range of 30 miles solely on zero-emissions electric power from a 16-kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. In city driving, it is expected to achieve an efficiency rating of 80 MPGe based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. The pivotal technology behind the all-new Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is its innovative electrically variable transmission (EVT). Designed by FCA US, the device features two electric motors, which are both capable of driving the vehicle’s wheels. On the Chrysler Pacifica gasoline models, the latest iteration of the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine produces 287 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque, along with unsurpassed fuel economy (28 miles per gallon on the highway). Enhancements such as two-step variable-valve lift (VVL), cooled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) and innovative weight-reduction strategies boost the engine’s efficiency and performance, all while preserving the smoothness that remains a hallmark of the Pentastar brand. For added fuel efficiency, engine stop-start (ESS) technology is a standard feature on the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica (late availability). JAN. / FEB. 2017 73

A fast silhouette and sophisticated, fluid-like surfacing deliver a level of style not found in the minivan segment. The Pacifica’s sliding door track lines are hidden under the rear-quarter side glass, making them virtually indistinguishable.
