Legacy of Style” is the inspiration that accompanied STEFANO RICCI into Gabriele d’Annunzio’s world at the Vittoriale degli Italiani, which was transformed for this occasion into an ideal environment to present the new Spring/Summer 2017 collection, hosted by the Vittoriale Foundation and its President, Giordano Bruno Guerri. It was a voyage into the timeless elegance of the father of Italian style par excellence. The Vate’s vestiarii opened like an enchantment, permitting the STEFANO RICCI menswear collection to reside as easily within the Prioria’s rooms as well as on the austere and solemn estate grounds, designed by the Poet. It is a balanced exchange, a converging weave of coherence and significance that united these two worlds. The explicitly Italian production displays a penchant for beauty, a meticulous attention to detail, an inherent quality and the harmony within each creation. “Gabriele d’Annunzio was defined as the Arbiter elegantiarum. The photographs of him at the Vittoriale are a

26 JULY / AUGUST 2016

hymn to a style that is pure inspiration. I wish to express my profound gratitude to the president of the Foundation for granting us this privilege,” states Stefano Ricci, who has dedicated a reinterpretation of a complete outfit to the Vate, which will go on to enrich the D’Annunzio Segreto Museum. The three-piece suit is made of SR Super 150’ wool and cashmere; its particular curved lines are inspired by the Poet’s clothes, and offer a pleasant and dynamic vision of contemporary elegance. The suit’s characteristic rounded cuts are found in the pleats and in the lapels of the jacket, in the five-button waistcoat and in the shirt collar, which has been made entirely out of exclusive STEFANO RICCI cotton. The formal care and craftsmanship of fine tailoring is revealed in the unique silk linings. The profile of the pants evokes the flavours of the fashion of the time; with iconic slant pockets, stitched pleats, and a buttoned fly. Indeed, this is not a simple tribute to Gabriele d’Annunzio, but a project that pursues his path, begun from a dialogue with nature as well as art, and continuing into the abode of dreams.

“We began with natural geometry, passing through tributes to the Masters of the Arts, and today we put our creations into distinct contexts. This same experience happened with the Sammezzano Castle, the Antico Setificio Fiorentino, and then passed idyllically to the Casa degli Italiani” says Filippo Ricci, Creative Director of the Florentine Maison founded in 1972 by his parents. For the presentation of the new collection, Stefano Ricci wished to take his guests (100, arriving from all over the world) and rediscover Gabriele d’Annunzio’s home, within which the models of the Florentine fashion house enlivened the poet’s rooms, embellishing the atmosphere in the manner of d’Annunzio with the Royal Eagle fragrances. The evening then developed alongside the Torre degli Archivi, where a gramophone from the ‘20s played the original 78rpm disks, those that the master of the estate so cherished. Within a dialogue between the original outfits worn by Gabriele d’Annunzio and the homage that Stefano Ricci devised for the occasion, Giordano Bruno Guerri extended an introductory

greeting all the while dressed for the occasion as the Poet of our times. To cap off the evening was a dinner on board the Nave Puglia, displaying ‘20s style tableware, a champagne fountain and a menu entrusted to the hands of Da Vittorio. STEFANO RICCI further supports the Vittoriale with the restoration of the Sala del Mappamondo, and of the fabrics within the Sala della Musica. JULY / AUGUST 2016 27

A

n encounter between different worlds. A blend of cultures. The East steps quietly into the West, transformed and transforming, with no hint of exoticism or ethnic nostalgia. The strongest concept in this ultimately urban collection is contamination, which manifests itself as an Eastern feel mixed with Western tastes. Fusion means colours. Basic blue, grey, green and mud are tinged with teal; this is a palette characterised by a special shade of blue/green: myrtle green. Colours are natural and subtle, with shades of taupe, greige and sand, but no plain white. Fusion means paisley; traditionally used in winter, for spring/summer it has been stylised to stand as a pure symbol on light warm-weather garments. Paisley is applied using four different techniques: digital printing for shirts and blouses, jacquards for ruffled jersey jackets, embroidery over a Prince-of-Wales type of fabric, and laser-engraving on outerwear, with small lasered patterns looking like all-over tattoos.

34 JULY / AUGUST 2016

Fusion means trousers with one side dart, narrow at the ankle; jackets with small, pagoda shoulders and puckered sleeve heads, sometimes with lapels and slightly raised buttons that look as if they were drawn on. Washed silk V-neck T-shirts alternate with shirts featuring small mandarin or notched collars. Fusion means fine materials, and no technical fabrics: wool, cupro, washed silk and cotton express a winning allseason approach to meet the needs of Emporio Armani fans around the world. Extremely light ‘featherweight’ nappa leather bonded with a georgette lining has a crisp feel to it. Laserengraved, 3D-effect leather is used on both outerwear and accessories. Everpresent backpacks are embroidered to create three-dimensional effects. Various types of shoes – including sneakers, sabots, and slip-ons – recall the shape of sandals. New, surprising oxfords come with a closed front and open back, with the foot held in place by a strap around the back of the ankle.

Tod’s

L

eo is the new symbolic accessory for Tod’s men’s shoes. A metal component incorporates the traditional techniques of hot metal-casting. Marlin takes a more urban approach, incorporating a polished edge, emriching the celebrated rubber sole. Easy urban highlights the craftmanship that characterizes the quality of Tod’s and is protagonist in these five models, ranging from the classic lace-up to the moccasin; rubber and fine leather overlap for a new sport style sole. Eight Bag derives its name from its eight pockets; six internal and two external. Formal and sophisticated when closed, it opens out flat to become a personal desk. Two versions: plain colours for precious leathers or crocodile and two-tone for calfskin. The Pilot Jacket is composed of stretch leather, a special material that emphasizes the value of research and the exceptionality of Tod’s. A cross functional jacket inspired by the military world, this versatile outerwear piece maybe worn on all occasions, both in city or country, weekday or weekend.

36 JULY / AUGUST 2016

T

he Women’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection is the product of a Situationist dérive: the playful practice of crossing and exploring urban spaces. The dérive adopts an unconventional strategy of geographical displacement punctuated by random and indeterminate movements. Paths take shape according to the stimuli of the city. These paths push toward the unknown and contemplate the possibility of getting lost as an opportunity for learning and discovery. Neverthless, the dérive does not exclusively celebrate losing oneself. It is configured above all as a clue-based technique for understanding the contemporary: an exploratory process of collecting and interpreting signs, suggestions, vital traces, emotional tonalities, and symbolic worlds. These hints gather on the collection’s clothes to form eclectic palimpsests rich with heterogeneous references. The clothes are transformed into psychogeographic maps capable of recording the urban unconscious: maps that

embroider the world within a discourse of affectionate intimacy. The reference is to the Carte de Tendre, published in 1654 by Madeleine de Scudéry: a map of tenderness, a moving topography of desire. In fact each object in the collection is offered up as a small atlas of emotions, a treasure chest of aesthetic references, a sentimental cartography in which patterns, extraordinary craftsmanship, and rarefied materials are interwoven. The exploration of the world results in a tender mapping in which the aesthetic dimension is deeply imbued with the political. Indeed De Scudéry’s map celebrated a rebellion against conventions: a revolt based on the recognition of women’s inner world. “In this respect, the power of her vision can be inspiring even today, not only because her discourse contains a political affirmation of desire, but because it permits us to reposition sentiments on our own map, and therefore to alter the cartographies we use to navigate our world.” – (G. Bruno)

Salvatore

Ferragamo Men’s Collection Spring-Summer 2016.

P

ersonality, a convergence of signs. Eclecticism, an instinct. Lightness, an approach. For the Salvatore Ferragamo Spring Summer 2016 collection, Massimiliano Giornetti develops a concept of clashing rhythms. He shapes a style centred on refined imbalance and designed with idiosyncratic combinations and individual gestures. Sharp graphics and luxurious materials compliment abstract geometrics and organic textures, where aplomb and nonchalance merge into a perfectly balanced symphony of eclecticism. The well-cut but dégagé lines underscore the dynamic surfaces enhanced by stripes, inserts and pinstripes that design multisensory pathways. The ‘everyday’ is enriched by a wardrobe conceived according to purposely misaligned precision: high-waisted trousers with a razor-sharp crease, short jackets and mackintoshes with a precise profile. Dry wool suits feature off-colour pinstripes enhanced by bold stitching. Seersucker or cotton shirts with broad stripes are matched with tailoring without ever converging completely. Broken stripes on compact sweaters alternate precious leather inserts and raffia embroidery while opposing geometric lines lend to exotic materials. Cactuses and monkeys whimsically appear on patches and embroidery. The collection is designed by autonomous units but the overall aesthetic is the result of the instinctive combination of several factors to emphasize an enlightened carefree attitude. The soft, mellow colour palette merges dissonances into rhythmic harmony: brown, khaki, ochre and beige are heightened by splashes of turquoise, pink and cactus green. Black is the recurrent link that blends and mellows the palette. A tactile collage is the distinctive feature of the accessories: sandals and gym lace-ups with high rubber soles and fringes on toecaps; straw bags and pouches with leather exteriors; eyewear with inner and outer temples featuring contrasting patterns; monkey-shaped charms and pendants to offset any sense of severity. The music tracks have been recorded in Punjab and Delhi, India, with the vocals recorded in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the entire album mastered at Capitol Records in Los Angeles, California. “The vision about this album was created ten years ago while I was living in India, so my heart feels overjoyed that it is now materializing.” explains Lerche. “I feel a huge enthusiasm about sharing the album with my fans and also with many new music lovers worldwide. BEAUTY TRENDS

Summer Beauty

Hot Trends for Hot Season.

Flawless Summer Skin The heat is making us break out in sweat: Not only do we have perspiratory glands under the armpit, the hands or feet, but also on our face. What was once designed as an “air conditioner” of our body can now ruin our makeup in no time. This is why summery light formulations such as BB, CC or DD creams are much better than strongly covering foundations, cream powders or makeup mousses. They create a natural finish by simultaneously nourishing the skin. A complexion correcting primer can be enough for some skin types to cover small blemishes and to make the skin appear radiant again. The matte effect is achieved by powder: it absorbs sebum and sweat and rounds out the look with a matte finish that can be touched up off and on during the day. Those who want to play it safe can also pack some blotting papers into their beach bags. Like Ice in the Sunshine Just like ice-cream, eye shadow and 50 JULY / AUGUST 2016

Smells Like Summer Less is more during summer! This isn’t only seen in fashion or makeup, but this also goes for fragrances. After having had heavy aromas during winter, it can now be a bit zappier: beside refreshing components such as bergamot or tangerine, floral chords or fruity scents, too, create a scent aura to die for. Matching deodorants keep ourselves fresh during the day, whereas antiperspirants reduce the activity of our perspiratory glands up to 60 %. Special creams or sprays make our feet fit again by refreshing the skin. A thermal water spray or towlettes give us a fresh kick here and there. lipstick can “melt away” rapidly. What a shame that such a lavish color palette dominates the summer! Blue is the trend color per se and looks perfect on blonde beach beauties, with tanned skin. This summer’s trend is also towards fruity fresh shades such as peach, raspberry or melon. This is also the reason why water- and smudge-proof textures are a great choice when it comes to eye makeup. Waterproof mascara, smudge-proof eyeliner, eye shadow base or long lasting creamy eye shadows: these products make sure the eye makeup survives a bath in the cool water.

Cailyn Cosmetic Waterproof Gelux Eyebrow The Balm's waterproof formula that will not fade even in hot humid weather or when applied prior to swimming, exercising or sweating. proper styling and care products are in demand. To create elaborate braided hairstyles, single strands of hair should be sprayed with hairspray already while styling the hair. After having finished the styling, hair lacquer ensures an extra long-lasting look. Our skin is longing for some UV protection… and so does our hair! Besides moisturizing shampoos, a conditioner after each shower comes with the territory, while a mask or an intensive hair treatment that are used once or twice a week regenerate the hair from environmental damage. By following these simple rules, the hot season will be great for all the summer beauties!

ummer has arrived: high temperatures and bright sunshine admittedly raise the spirits. Unfortunately, this combination does not get along well with makeup. While the foundation starts to run and stain, our face is unfavorably shiny which makes our complexion appear uneven. After a while while Eye shadow and lipstick, too, have vanished without a trace. “Zinda Hai Dil”

J

ai Matt is a U.S. talent who has made an international splash with his Bollywood mash-ups and now he’s taking his musical journey to the next level with his original single Zinda Hai Dil. The romantic number incorporates rich lyrics, live instruments, and a feel-good vibe. While Zinda Hai Dil is the first taste of Jai Matt’s original work in the South Asian scene, it is not the first time in his career, nonetheless, it is a milestone for this artist. Jai Matt shares, “My experience before the Asian scene consisted of creating originals; it is nice to be back in my creative zone with Zinda Hai Dil. I am particularly excited about this single

because the Carnatic flavor of the flute melody, performed by Anand Vemuri, brings me one step closer to incorporating live elements into the electronic playground.” Zinda Ha Dil is a creative collaboration between a slew of talents. Jai Matt is the lead vocalist as well as the English lyricist for the song while Arpit G brings us the Hindi hook. Nate and Dr. Srimix lay down the infectious production and everything is mastered for easy listening courtesy of WiiDope. This love song is brought to life with the video brilliance of GUYNEZ. Jai Matt is seen taking his crush on their first date with the historic U.S. city of Philadelphia as the backdrop. Their cute

hide-and-seek game will make you smile and the two can’t seem to get enough of each other. In 2015, Jai Matt stepped on to the Asian scene with a fresh take on the mash-up concept. His adaptation of mainstream American tracks and Bollywood hits caught people’s attention. Whether it was “Lean On Rangeela” which also sampled Imran Khan’s “Aaja Ve Mahiya” or “Where Are You Now” featuring Justin Bieber meets “Chand Sitare” from Hrithik Roshan’s film Kaho Na Pyar Hai, there is a melody or hook familiar for everyone. “Lean On Rangeela” has been the song that has inspired dance teams across the globe. It’s been heard in Canada at NACS and used as team introductions out in

JAI MATT BIOGRAPHY From the European dance scene to the flourishing Asian music arena, Jai Matt’s artistry has a vast span making him an artist everyone can enjoy. Jai Matt’s story begins in the small town of Keekozhoor, Kerala where the passion for music was evident from the start, you can say the love for music was embedded in his DNA. His early singing consisted of Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi songs setting the foundation for his South Asian influences. At the age of 11, Jai and his family immigrated to the United States of America. Once the culture shock of living in America sunk in, Jai discovered Western music. His Western ear ranged from Boys 2 Men to classics like Frank Sinatra. Jai Matt started his professional singing career at the tender age of 15. He was given the opportunity to work with acclaimed producers and songwriters in the R&B, Pop industries who helped develop him into the artist he is today. The talent Jai Matt had became more and more evident to his peers which resulted in an offer from a major record label. However, due to creative differences, Jai Matt’s music career took a different path. In this experience, Jai Matt decided to venture to Los Angeles, which led to the birth of his European career. In 2012, Jai Matt teamed up with the Polish producer Robert M creating the Polish summer hit “Kiss the Sky.” The song led to an Eska “Summer Hit” Award Nomination and a live performance at the ESKA Music Awards in Poland. From there, Jai Matt teamed up with L.A.R.5 and NICCO to release songs in Germany, Austria, and Sweden. After much success in Europe, and still maintaining his presence there, Jai was ready to embark on a journey fusing Western and Indian music. In his fusion mission, Jai Matt teamed up with producer and engineer Dr. Srimix to create unique mashups of South Asian tracks from yesteryear with Top 40 English hits. Their first installation, “Lean On Rangeela,” received much support from the fans and has become an anthem in the dance community. Jai Matt has gone on to tour in North America extensively with his mash-up hits, and continues to evolve as an artist. 2016 debuts Jai Matt’s original work for the Asian scene starting with “Zinda Hai Dil.” The spring release will be followed up with a summer hit and an international tour. With so much to offer his audience, there is no saying what Jai Matt will create in the studio next.

FOOD

Soldaderas

Beans

This recipe is our feminist riff on the common frijoles charros (cowboy beans). A vegan dish named after the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution (soldaderas), this features a smoky flavor—as if cooked over a camp fire. Makes 6 cups (1 ½ L) or about 8 servings

1 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil 2 white onions, peeled and chopped 1 orange or yellow bell pepper, diced 1 head garlic (about 14 cloves), peeled and chopped 1 tsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground 1 tsp coriander seeds, toasted and ground 1 12-oz (355-mL) bottle lager beer (see Shopping Note) 1 tbsp dried oregano, preferably Mexican 2 bay leaves 1/4 tsp liquid smoke concentrate (optional) 1 tbsp minced Chipotles en Adobo or canned 2 cups (500 mL) heirloom beans (pinquito, bolita, vaquero, Good Mother Stallard, or pinto) 1 qt (1 L) water 4 Roma or plum tomatoes, chopped or 14.5-oz (411-g) can fire-roasted chopped tomatoes 1/2 cup (125 mL) chopped cilantro 2 tsp sea salt

70 JULY / AUGUST 2016

In a large frying pan on medium heat, melt coconut oil. Add onions and cook for about 5 minutes. Add bell peppers and cook for 5 minutes. Add garlic, cumin, and coriander and cook until fragrance is released, about 1 minute. Pour in beer and stir in oregano, bay leaves, liquid smoke, and chipotle. Bring up to a slow simmer. Transfer mixture, along with beans and water, to slow cooker. Cook beans on high heat for 4–6 hours or low 6–9 hours, or until skins are soft and insides are creamy. Add tomatoes, cilantro, and salt. Reduce heat to low (if necessary) and cook 1 hour to allow tomatoes to soften and seasonings to meld. Shopping note: We use a pure-brewed organic lager in this recipe. A Mexican beer would also work well. RECIPES: Decolonize Your Diet: Plant-Based Mexican-American Recipes for Health and Healing by Luz Calvo & Catriona Rueda Esquibel. DECOLONIZE YOUR DIET:

In the United Farm Workers’ movement, the folk song “De Colores” uses the image of multiple colors to signal appreciation for biodiversity in the fields, in the people, and in the beauty of creation. We use this principle in creating this dish because we strive to eat fruits and vegetables of every color each day. Get your “five a day” in this zesty grilled salad, while at the same time benefitting from the blood sugarstabilizing properties of the cactus. This is best prepared in the fall, when the vegetables are freshly harvested.

“DeColores”Salad

Makes 8 servings 6 nopal paddles, cleaned, spines removed 2 fresh poblano chiles about 1 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil 2–3 ears of corn, to make 2 cups (500 mL) kernels 1 orange bell pepper 1/2 red onion, finely diced seeds of 1 pomegranate (optional, if in season) 4 oz (115 g) crumbled queso cotija (optional)

Vinaigrette 1 garlic clove 1/4 tsp sea salt 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1/8 tsp white pepper 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Heat a grill (or grill pan) to medium-high heat. Lightly coat nopal paddles and poblano chiles in coconut oil. Shuck and clean corn. Place nopales, poblanos, whole bell pepper, and corn on grill. Cook for about 5 minutes and then turn. Continue to cook until each vegetable is cooked through, about 15–20 minutes.

Remove corn when just slightly charred on all sides. Poblanos and bell pepper need to be thoroughly charred. When vegetables are sufficiently cooked or charred, remove from grill and set aside. Place poblano and bell pepper in a covered bowl and allow to steam for 20 minutes. When cool, slip them out of their skins and remove seeds and stems. Cut into ¼-in (6-mm) wide strips and then cut strips about 2–3 in (5–8 cm) long. Cut nopales to same measurement. Using a sharp knife, cut corn kernels from cob. To make vinaigrette, place garlic and salt in a mortar and use pestle to grind to a smooth paste. Add vinegar and pepper and let rest for about 10 minutes, while preparing salad. To finish vinaigrette, whisk in olive oil. In a salad bowl, gently combine nopales, bell peppers, poblanos, corn kernels, and onions with pomegranate seeds. Pour vinaigrette over salad and toss to combine. Taste and adjust seasonings. Serve salad at room temperature, garnished, if desired, with crumbled queso cotija.

TRAVEL

Wild Style B Adventures in Brazil. razil has recently emerged on the world adventure travel radar as travelers have discovered all that it has to offer: a wide range of unique cultural experiences, captivating adventures and a paradise for wildlife seekers and with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games quickly approaching, Wildland Adventures (www.wildland.com) offers three ways active travelers can capitalize on the opportunities created by the international sporting event.

1. Can you taste it? There is an emerging mouth-watering culinary scene in Brazil thanks to its being one of the word’s cultural melting pots. From churrascaria to feijoada, Brazil’s distinct tastes and flavors entice and satisfy even the most discerning gourmands. 72 JULY / AUGUST 2016

Brazil’s history and culinary stage are inarguably intertwined. Sugar and coffee are vitally important crops while also being labor intensive, which fueled the African slave trade to Brazil and in turn, African culinary traditions as well. Brazil’s national dish, feijoada, is thought to be an African take on a traditional Portuguese dish. Another beloved Brazilian dish, acaraje, originally from Nigeria, has become a staple of Bahian street food and the use of dende (African palm oil) is one of the principal ingredients in moqueca, an otherworldly classic Bahian stew. After the abolition of slavery, immigrants from Italy and Japan joined the Brazilian labor market and added their own influences to the melting pot of the

swimming with pink dolphins in the Amazon. Active visitors can snorkel in crystal clear rivers and explore ancient caves in Bonito, or trek through mysterious valleys, past table top mountains and waterfalls in Salvador’s Chapada Diamantia. One can cruise on a private schooner past pirate coves on the Costa Verde in Paraty or gaze dumbstruck at Brazil’s Iguassu Falls. Wildland Adventures has even pioneered a new activity where travelers are able to swim at the “Meeting of the Waters”, a natural phenomenon where the Negro River (originating in Colombia) meets the Solimões River (originating in Peru) to form the Amazon River. Brazilian culinary scene. Pizza in Brazil can easily rival that of Naples and New York and is practically its own food group. Unique ingredient additions find their way into the pizza ovens of Brazil's urban centers that include everything from soft catupiry or local minas cheese, cinnamon, bananas and even guava. 2. Where to go: With the huge crowds expected in Rio this summer, now is the perfect time to venture off the beaten path and explore the wilds of Brazil. Brazil offers many rare opportunities such as scouting for jaguars in the expansive wetlands of Brazil's Pantanal or

3. It just adds up: Brazil has temporarily lifted the mandatory $250 visa for US citizens this summer (through Sept.18), and, on top of that, the US Dollar is the strongest it’s ever been to the Brazilian Real. Add that to that the fact that roundtrip flights from the US to many of the most sought-after adventure destinations in Brazil are as low as $450 in July and August (including the Amazon and Pantanal), travelers can expect significant savings. Many of the popular adventure resorts still have availability for July and August. Wildland Adventures has recently expanded their trips to Brazil by venturing to new areas offering several unique explorations of 9 to 14 days. u JULY / AUGUST 2016 73
