Mas não se decidindo a dizer-lhe, vai pedindo conselhos e relembra o que outros lhe disseram sobre o relacionamento num casal. Por ironia, são os dois escolhidos para serem entrevistados como um par modelo. Encetam, então, um percurso difícil. Premiado já como Melhor Filme no Festival de Alexandria, no Lifft Festival na Índia e no Treasure Coast Film Festival nos Estados Unidos.

All love stories have two versions: in colour and in black and white. A man wants to separate from his companion of 12 years but doesn’t know how to tell her. While he is indecisive, he listens to the advice of others and recovers what they have said about relationships. Ironically, they were chosen to be interviewed as a model couple. The pair begins then a new and difficult journey. This film has already been granted Best Film Awards in the Alexandria Film Festival, Lifft Festival in India and Treasure Coast Film Festival in the U.S.A..

Com as minas a fechar e o desemprego a crescer, um jornalista, Frazer, envolve-se com uma estagiária do seu jornal cujo irmão tinha sido morto em circunstâncias estranhas. As investigações do caso levam-no a suspeitar de um industrial com ambições políticas. Atraído para um conjunto de rituais pagãos, participa num deles. Entre os actores do filme está Jon Finch que actuou em “Frenzy” de Hitchcock e mais tarde em “Kingdom of Heaven” de Ridley Scott. No Fantasporto, “Darklands” foi Prémio da Crítica em 1997, tendo vencido também o de Melhor Argumento e Prémio Especial do Júri de Cinema Fantástico.Ganha ainda o Melhor Filme no Festival of Fantastic Films no Reino Unido e o Silver Award no WorldFest Houston nos EUA. O realizador trabalhou para Steven Spielberg e é conhecido por “The Last Horror Movie” (2003), Meliès D’Argent para o Melhor Filme Fantástico Europeu. É também Prémio de Carreira do Fantasporto.

The strength of pagan Celtic rituals still endures in the memory of Wales. With mines closing and unemployment raging, a journalist called Frazer meets a trainee in his newspaper whose brother had mysteriously been killed. Their investigations make them suspect an industrialist with political ambitions. Attracted to a number of pagan rituals, Frazer participates in one of them. Among the actors of this film is Jon Finch, also in the cast of “Frenzy” by Alfred Hitchcock and, later on, in “Kingdom of Heaven” by Ridley Scott. In Fantasporto, “Darklands” was awarded the Critics Award in 1997, and also the Best Screenplay and Special Award of the Jury of Fantasy Cinema. It was also granted Best Film in the Festival of Fantastic Films in UK and the Silver Award in the WorldFest Houston (USA). The director worked for Steven Spielberg and is known for “The Last Horror Movie” (2003), Meliès D’Argent for Best European Fantasy Film 2005 and Career Award in Fantasporto.

Anthony Waller, 95’ (G.B.) – Homenagem (cópia restaurada 4K) – v.o. leg. port. Versão restaurada do filme clássico de Anthony Waller, estreado originalmente em 1995. Uma técnica de maquilhagem e efeitos especiais de nome Billy, é muda e trabalha na rodagem de um filme de terror na Rússia. Uma noite fica trancada inadvertidamente no estúdio. Ao procurar uma saída, dá de frente com a filmagem de um “snuff movie” em que a vítima pensa estar a fazer um filme pornográfico e acaba morta em frente às câmaras. Rapidamente descoberta, vai travar uma luta desigual com os assassinos russos. Com Alec Guiness no papel de The Reaper. Filme vencedor do Prémio Especial do Júri do Festival de Gérardmer em 1998.

A restored version of a Anthony Waller classic feature of 1995. A mute make-up artist working on a horror movie is locked in the studio overnight where she unwillingly witnesses a brutal murder in a clandestine shooting of a snuff movie – in which the victim thinks she is filming porn but ends murdered on camera. The witness begins an uneven fight with the Russian killers. With Alec Guiness as The Reaper, this film won the Special Jury’s Award at the Gérardmer in 1998.

A vida de Josué roda à volta da velha mercearia que herdou do pai e tomar conta do seu irmão louco que tem de manter fechado em casa. A ida ao bar e a sua amizade com uma mulher da vida, Abigail, são as suas únicas válvulas de escape. Mas as rotinas de Josué são abaladas quando o irmão foge de casa. Josué vai tentar apagar o rasto assassino do irmão, mas a perversa realidade dos acontecimentos vai virar a sua existência e obrigá-lo a enfrentar o seu macabro destino. O realizador é conhecido por “Asmodexia” (2014), a sua primeira longa-metragem apresentada no Fantasporto, e “After the Lethargy” (2018).

Josué's life revolves around the old grocery store he inherited from his father and the care of an insane brother whom he must keep locked up. The bar, his faith, and his friendship with Abigail, a street girl, are his only escape valves. But Josué's routines are violently altered the night his brother manages to escape. Josué will try to cover up the brutal misdeeds of his brother, but the perverse reality of the events will turn his existence upside down, forcing him to face his macabre destiny. The director is known “Asmodexia” (2014), his first feature and presented in Fantasporto, and “After the Lethargy” (2018).

Isabel Pina, 102’ (Port) – v.o. leg. ingl. Celebrando os 40 Anos do Fantasporto em 2020, a realizadora Isabel Pina, profunda conhecedora do festival, relembra os anos passados. Para revisitar intensivamente a história do evento, as suas raízes e a sua relevância internacional, a realizadora entrevistou dezenas de pessoas em todo o mundo, desde os fundadores aos muitos realizadores e profissionais que no evento iniciaram as suas carreiras. Ao entrar na sua 43ª edição, este trabalho visa relembrar alguns dos momentos mais marcantes do percurso. Esta é a primeira longa-metragem da realizadora.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Fantasporto which occurred in 2020, director Isabel Pina recalls the past years. In an intensive approach to the history of the festival, its beginnings and how it achieved the international relevance it has now, Isabel Pina interviewed dozens of people around the world, from the founders to the many directors and other professionals who started building their careers in Fantasporto. Going now to its 43rd edition, this film reminds us of its most outstanding moments. First feature by the director.

Depois de uma tempestade súbita e violenta, uma adormecida aldeia piscatória na pequena ilha do sul de Tagalog acorda para um fenómeno extraordinário – o mar está vermelho. Flutuando nas suas águas estão milhares de maçãs. Ninguém sabe de onde vieram. Alguns suspeitam de que é augúrio de má sorte de Baconaua, uma criatura mitológica. Poucos acreditam num milagre do céu e outras pensam que vem tudo de um lugar sinistro.

After a particularly strong squall, a sleepy fishing village on a tiny island in Southern Tagalog wakes up to an astonishing sight – their sea has turned red. Floating on their waters are thousands of apples. No one knows where they came from. Some suspect this is a bad omen from the baconaua – a creature of myth. Few believe it to be a miracle from heaven, while others fear a more sinister source.

The Grandson

O que começa como uma história sobre a exploração de velhos e esquemas por telefone para lhes roubar dinheiro, leva a outras histórias do passado. Rudi e o avô têm uma ligação muito profunda. Quando o avô é vítima de um esquema cruel, Rudi decide que não vai deixar os criminosos escapar. Um grito contra o abandono dos mais velhos. Realizador, argumentista e produtor húngaro, Deák foi vencedor do Óscar de Melhor Curta de Imagem Real em 2017 com “Sting”, filme que lhe valeu grande êxito de crítica. “The Grandson” é a sua primeira longa-metragem, baseada numa história verdadeira.

A first feature coming from an Oscar Live Action Short winner in 2017 with “Sing”. What starts as a story about scamming old people, takes us to stories of the past. Rudi who has a special bond with his grandfather who was a victim of a cruel scam. He decides that he is not going to let the criminals get away with it. But in order to get close to them, he has to become a different person. A call of attention against the indifference towards elderly people. Deák is an Academy Award winner Hungarian director, writer and producer born in Budapest in 1982. His short “Sing” (2016) earned critical appraisal and recognition, and many international awards, namely an Oscar for the Best Live Action Short Film. “The Grandson” is his first feature, based on a true story.

Um dia chega um homem, Samad, que diz que anda a estudar as tartarugas e lhe pede ajuda. Zahara e Samad vivem então uma história cheia de duplicidade e decepção. O passado e o presente e os fantasmas que trazem. Prémio FIPRESCI no Festival de Locarno. O realizador malaio foi já muito premiado internacionalmente, conhecido por “The Elephant and the Sea”, Prémio Especial do Júri do Festival de Turim, “Woman on Fire Looks for Water” (2009), que recebeu uma menção no Festival de Cannes, e “The Tiger Factory” (2010) que passou no Festival de Cannes e Menção Especial no Festival de Tóquio.

As the day goes on, Zahara and Samad become entangled in a dangerous dance of duplicity and deception. The past and the present and the ghosts they bring. Luisito Lagdameo Ignacio, 106’ (2016) – Filipinas Retrospectiva – O Cinema de Lapuz – v. o. leg. Ingl. A pequena distância do bairro vermelho da cidade está Area, um quarteirão de casas de prostituição em que uma multidão de prostitutas se podem vender por uma lata de sardinhas ou a crédito. Durante o seu apogeu, Area teve cerca de 700 bordéis que serviam milhares de homens de pouco rendimento, rapazes com hormonas activas e desajustados da sociedade, todos para aproveitar as vantagens dos preços baixos. Hilary, uma das trabalhadoras de sexo, guarda as suas economias para fazer a sua viagem de sonho para o Estados Unidos para encontrar o filho a quem perdeu o rasto devido ao pânico causado pela erupção do Vulcão Pinatubo. O seu filme “Laut” venceu o Pémio de Melhor Actriz e uma Menção no Fantasporto 2016 e “School Service” venceu a Melhor Actriz na Semana dos Realizadores, e Melhor Actriz e uma Menção do Orient Express no Fantas de 2019.

A short distance from the city’s red-light district is Area, a neighborhood of brothels where over-the-hill sex workers can be had for a can of sardines or even on credit. During its heyday, Area had up to 700 brothels servicing thousands of low-income men, hormonally active boys and society misfits – all taking advantage of the bargain price of sex available only at Area. Hillary, one of the sex workers, keeps her life-savings to fulfill a dream to travel to the United States to find a son she said she lost during the panic caused by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. The director’s feature film “Laut” won Best Actress and Special Mention at the 2016 Oporto International Film Festival and “School Servic” won Best Actress in the Director’s Week and Special Mention in the Orient Express here in Oporto in 2019.

Melchior the Apothecary

Elmo Nüganen, 100’ (Est) – v.o. leg. port. Uma grande produção de um dos mais renomados encenadores da Estónia, num verdadeiro fresco da vida no final da idade Média. Em Tallinn, no século XV, o boticário é o único que resolve, com os seus conhecimentos, os crimes da cidade. O xerife da cidade pede ajuda ao Boticário Melchior, misto de médico e polícia, para o ajudar a resolver uma série de assassínios. Com a ajuda de um aprendiz que chegou de fora, Melchior vai tentar ver os factos que apontam para o criminoso.

A big budget production coming from one of the most famous stage directors in Estonia, a true portrait of life by the end of Middle Ages. In Tallinn, in the 15th century, the apothecary is the only person who can solve with his knowledge the crimes of the city. The town sheriff asks Melchior, the apothecary who acts as a doctor and a policeman, for help in solving a series of killings. Together with an apprentice from out of town, Melchior is going to look for the facts that indicate who the criminal is.

Elmo Nüganen, 90’ (Est) – v.o. leg. port. Com histórias independentes, esta trilogia de Elmo Nüganen apresenta o 2º episódio. Melchior descobre a verdadeira identidade do aprendiz. Entretanto, há um fantasma à solta na cidade. Com a chegada da Inquisição, Melchior tem de caminhar pela linha estreita da verdade científica e a nuvem da superstição. Uma belíssima história de amor, com Melchior a ter de enfrentar os ataques dos recém-chegados ao mesmo tempo que tentar salvar os inocentes.

With independent plots, this is the second episode of this trilogy. Melchior learns the true identity of the apprentice. Vision of a ghost frighten the city. With the arrival of the Holy Inquisition to Tallinn, Melchior must walk in the fine thread between the scientific truth and a cloud of superstition. With a beautiful love story going on, Melchior has to face the attacks of the newcomers and save the innocents all at the same time.

Continuando a sua missão como ajudante do xerife da cidade, tenta descobrir quem oprime a cidade ao mesmo tempo que tenta proteger a mulher que ama e neutralizar a Inquisição. Como realizador de cinema foi já responsável, entre outras, pelas longas-metragens “Names in Marble” (2013), “Mushrooming” (2012), “Purge” (2012) e “1944” (2015) que foi o candidato da Estónia aos Óscares.

The third and last episode of the Melchior Saga. Melchior receives in his house a wounded man who, he thinks, someone is trying to kill. Carrying on with his mission to help the local sheriff, he has to discover those who oppress the town while protecting the woman he loves and neutralize the Inquisition. As a film director, he is known for the features “Names in Marble” (2013), “Mushrooming” (2012), “Purge” (2012) e “1944” (2015), Estonian submission to the Oscars.
