WHEN DESIRE TAKES A PERSONAL SHAPE It is in Villa Schroeder-Da-Porto, built in the 17th century and set in the middle of a big park, that Bottega Veneta operates its Customization Atelier. Here expert artisan hands personalize some of the most iconic bags of the Fashion House, as the Knot and the Cabat. Every artifact is assembled according to the wishes of the individual client through the use of selected materials, such as ostrich or crocodile, and in special colours such as turmaline blue, burned orange and raspberry red. A silver tag can be pinned or one’s initials stitched onto the bag. The Customization Atelier is on offer only within seven selected Bottega Veneta boutiques, in Milan, Paris, London, New York, Hong Kong, Bejing and Tokyo.

Per chiunque è difficile non essersi imbattuto, almeno una volta, in uno dei modelli della Birkin, o in una delle tante copie mal riuscite. Nel 1984 l’attrice Jane Birkin chiese a Hermès di studiare una borsa capiente, elegante ma sportiva. Da lì nacque l’icona.

Pochi mesi fa l’attrice stupisce il mondo, chiedendo di togliere il suo nome dalla borsa a causa dei maltrattamenti ai coccodrilli destinati a diventare pellame.

Ma la maison la rassicura: «Niente più crudeltà».

Pace fatta. E la storia di un mito può continuare.

All of us have come across the genuine Birkin or one of the many shoddy imitations at least once. In 1984, actress Jane Birkin asked Hermès to design an ample, elegant yet casual handbag and an icon was born. She then shocked the world just a few months ago, asking that her name no longer be attached to the bag, due to the mistreatment of crocodiles destined for leather.

However, Hermès reassured her that «there would be no more animal cruelty».

Situation resolved, the story of a legend continues.

Non si vedono in passerella e nemmeno nelle campagne pubblicitarie istituzionali. Eppure le sneakers create da Maria Grazia Chiuri e Pierpaolo Piccioli stanno avendo un grande successo, a detta dei buyer di negozi online e offline. Tra i modelli che più si stanno imponendo spiccano le Rockrunner, specie in versione camouflage. Segni particolari: le borchie sul tallone.

Nel complesso l’immagine e volutamente enigmatica, non conciliante, poco compiacente. E sottolinea l’idea di un prodotto che vuole essere non convenzionale, innovativo, post moderno.

Overall, the image is intentionally enigmatic, non-conciliatory, making no attempt to please. It highlights the idea of a product which intends to be nonconventional, innovative and post modern.

I personaggi che ruotano intorno all’arte sono spesso icone anche per la moda e non necessariamente si vestono come ci si aspetterebbe da loro, ossia nel modo eccentrico che contraddistingue, per esempio, Stacy Engman: già curatrice del National Arts Club di New York, è una fashionista estrema. «C’è chi esprime la propria arte, anche nel vestire, in modo diverso ma incisivo - osserva il giornalista e opinionista Angelo Flaccavento -. Penso al pittore Francesco Clemente, che interpreta in modo personale il gusto etnicometropolitano, oppure al curatore d’arte Jeffrey Deitch e ai suoi impeccabili completi sartoriali».

Su una leggenda vivente come Marina Abramovic i giudizi si dividono. «Si è troppo legata a un marchio», dice Flaccavento intendendo ovviamente Givenchy, mentre Francesca Cella (direttore generale di White, salone della moda contemporary, fondato nel Duemila da Massimiliano Bizzi) è di parere opposto: «Dopo la performance per la griffe a New York City, la moda si è consacrata a lei e alla gente. E se guardiamo le sue immagini, sembra uscita da un libro fotografico di Helmut Newton». Tra i clienti delle boutique Tiziana Fausti di Bergamo e Lugano ci sono parecchi personaggi legati all’arte: «Non sono attratti dal brand. Cercano capi che abbiano un senso, uno stile». Ma chi è invece il più “artista” tra i fashion designer? «Rei Kawakubo, grande sperimentatrice, Giambattista Valli per la ricerca sulle superfici tessili - risponde Flaccavento - e poi Missoni per il lavoro sul colore, Capucci, Miyake. Troppo didascalici, anche se divertenti, gli abiti-quadro di Viktor & Rolf haute couture».

The “celebs” who revolve around art are often fashion icons as well, who do not always necessarily dress as we would expect, i.e. in the eccentric manner that is the trademark, for example, of Stacy Engman: former curator of New York’s National Arts Club, she is an extreme fashionista. «There are those who express their art, including in the way they dress, in a different but incisive manner - observes journalist and columnist Angelo Flaccavento -. For instance, the painter Francesco Clemente, who interprets the ethnic-metropolitan look in a very personal way, or the art curator Jeffrey Deitch and his impeccable tailor made suits». Opinions regarding living legends such as Marina Abramovic differ. «She is too linked to a specific brand» says Flaccavento, obviously referring to Givenchy, while Francesca Cella (general manager of White, the contemporary fashion salon established in 2000 by Massimiliano Bizzi) thinks different: «After the performance for Givenchy in New York City, fashion bowed to her and to the people as well. And if we look at her photos, she looks like she came out of a Helmut Newton book». Many persons with ties to the art world frequent Tiziana Fausti’s stores in Bergamo and Lugano: «They are not attracted by the brand. They are looking for clothes with a meaning, a style».

Who among the fashion designers is an artist in his field? «Rei Kawakubo, a great experimenter, Giambattista Valli, due to his research on textile surfaces - answers Flaccavento - Missoni for the work on color, Capucci and Miyake. The Viktor & Rolf haute couture “frame dresses”, though entertaining, are too “academic”».

■ Cosa ha significato per lei crescere in una famiglia legata a un marchio di gioielleria fra i più noti al mondo?

Prestigio, tradizione e passione.

Sua madre, Maria, è stata una modella molto famosa. Ritiene abbia avuto un’influenza positiva sul suo modo di interpretare e vivere la moda?

Mia madre è stata ed è ancora oggi la mia musa per il suo stile e per il suo modo di vivere e interpretare la moda nella vita di tutti i giorni. Mi ha insegnato a trarre ispirazione sia dalla bellezza dei gioielli, sia dall’attualità della moda e a interpretare nelle mie creazioni i gusti della donna moderna.

Lei è nata a Miami, cresciuta a Milano e poi si è trasferita di nuovo negli Stati Uniti, dove vive a New York. Che tipo di formazione ha avuto e quanto è stato importante questo percorso per il suo credo estetico?

Ho vissuto a Milano per quasi 20 anni e questa città ha contribuito alla mia crescita culturale ed estetica. Ho seguito studi legati al mondo artistico, specializzandomi attraverso corsi di moda e gioiello al Politecnico di Milano, dove ho studiato gemmologia. Mi sono trasferita a New York a 20 anni, per studiare al FIT fashion and jewelry design. Vivere in questa meravigliosa metropoli ha contribuito a far crescere la mia creatività, permettendomi di fare un vero salto di qualità in senso artistico. Ma non credo sia la mia tappa finale.

Qual è la città dove si sente a casa e cosa pensa di Milano?

Milano e Miami sono due città che porto nel cuore. Trovo che Milano sia cresciuta moltissimo negli ultimi anni rispetto a quando ci ho vissuto e adoro tornarci. È un luogo in cui trovo conforto e rassicurazione.

Alla sua giovane età (26 anni) ha ricevuto l’incarico delicato di dare il suo apporto allo sviluppo del brand Buccellati: quali i risultati conseguiti fino a oggi?

collezioni un tocco di modernità, vista la volontà di rivolgerci anche a un target più giovane.

Le piace lavorare a quattro mani, con suo padre Andrea, alla creazione dei gioielli Buccellati?

Fin dai tempi di Mario Buccellati (il mio bisnonno) le due generazioni - padre e figlio - hanno lavorato a quattro mani. È essenziale per trasferire la tradizione nelle nuove creazioni. Io e mio padre siamo gli unici designer della maison ed è proprio questo che ci ha permesso, nel corso degli anni, di mantenere intatto il dna del brand e di portare avanti i valori introdotti da mio nonno Gianmaria.

Quali gli aspetti sui quali fare leva per innovare nel mondo della gioielleria?

Creare nuove tecniche di lavorazione, puntare sulla tecnologia, interpretare il gioiello nella quotidianità, trarre ispirazione dalla moda e dall’arte.

Con quali vestiti e quali gioielli si sente elegante?

Mi bastano un tacco...e un cuff.

Ha dichiarato recentemente di essere la più minimalista della famiglia Buccellati: cosa intendeva dire?

Lo stile Buccellati è riconosciuto in tutto il mondo come molto elaborato e ricco. Nelle mie creazioni tendo a interpretare la filosofia Buccellati in maniera più minimalista, organica e fresca. Per me la bellezza è semplicità.

Nella sua vita c’è posto anche per un marito, David Wildenstein, noto collezionista d’arte, e per un figlio, Nathan: come riesce a conciliare tutti questi impegni?

Non lo so nemmeno io. Avere un figlio cambia tutto, ma in meglio.

Ho la fortuna di lavorare con un team fantastico, dove tutti si aiutano e motivano vicendevolmente. Amo il mio lavoro ma la famiglia viene sempre prima di tutto.

LUCREZIA BUCCELLATI «ELEGANCE EQUALS SIMPLICITY» ■ What did growing up in a family connected to one of the most famous jewellery brands in the world mean to you?

Prestige, tradition and passion.

Your mother, Maria, was a renowned model. Does she have a positive influence on the way you interpret and experience fashion?

My mother was and still is my muse, because of her personal style and the way she interprets and experiences fashion on a daily basis. She taught me to be inspired both by beautiful jewellery and current fashion, as well as to incorporate the style of modern day women into my designs.

You were born in Miami, grew up in Milan, then moved back to the United States, where you now live in New York.

What sort of education did you receive and how important was it for your aesthetic ideology?

I lived in Milan for almost 20 years and it contributed to my cultural and aesthetic development. I studied art and specialized by taking courses in fashion, jewellery and gemmology at the Milan Polytechnic Institute. Then I moved to New York at the age of 20, to study fashion and jewellery design at FIT. Living in this amazing city has made me more creative, enabling me to improve the quality of my work, artistically. But New York is not my final goal.

In what city do you feel most at home and what do you think of Milan?

Milan and Miami are the two cities closest to my heart. Milan has grown quite a bit since I lived there and I just love to visit it. It’s a place where I feel at ease and comfortable.

At your young age of 26, you have been given the delicate task of helping to develop the Buccellati brand. What did you achieve thus far?

My contribution thus far has been to add a modern touch to a variety of collections, given that we also want to appeal to a younger audience.

Do you enjoy working alongside your father, Andrea, designing Buccellati jewellery?

Since my great-grandfather Mario Buccellati’s era, two generations - father and son - have worked together. This is essential to convey tradition in our new creations. My father and I are the only designers at Buccellati and this is the very thing that has enabled us, over the years, to keep our brand DNA intact and to carry forward the values my grandfather Gianmaria established.

What aspects did you leverage in order to remain innovative in the jewellery industry?

Creating new process techniques, making use of technology, designing jewellery for everyday use and taking inspiration from the fashion and art worlds.

What clothing and jewellery make you feel elegant?

All I need is a pair of heels...and a cuff bracelet.

You recently said that you are the most minimalist designer in the Buccellati family. What did you mean?

Buccellati style is known worldwide as quite elaborate and ornate.

My designs tend to interpret the Buccellati philosophy in a more minimalist, organic and fresh new way. Beauty is simplicity to me.

There’s also room in your life for husband and well-known art collector, David Wildenstein, and your son Nathan. How do you balance all these responsibilities?

I don’t know how I do it. Having a son changes everything, but for the better. I’m fortunate to be able to work with a fantastic team, where everybody helps and supports one another. I love my work, but family always comes first.

«IL SEGRETO DELL’ECCELLENZA»

Pier Luigi Loro Piana La sua famiglia è stata protagonista di una delle ascese più riuscite sull’olimpo dell’absolute luxury. Si sente di dare un consiglio alle eccellenze italiane con voglia di emergere?

Suggerirei di sfruttare pienamente i vantaggi del made in Italy e di esplorare fino in fondo l’utilizzo della manodopera italiana.

Abbiamo in loco tutti gli anelli della catena del valore, il che consente un controllo meticoloso della produzione, con la grande qualità dell’esecuzione che ne consegue. Se si abbina questa forza con i giovani talenti dello stile si crea freschezza e si diffonde un messaggio di qualità assoluta. Bisogna arricchire la cultura dell’eccellenza nei giovani, trattando con rispetto sia i dipendenti, sia l’ambiente, in un’ottica di sostenibilità dei propri sforzi.

In questo momento, gli imprenditori del lusso che cosa dovrebbero fare?

Devono avere il coraggio di investire, senza sbilanciarsi troppo, ma sapendosi procurare i capitali che sul mercato ora ci sono a condizioni ottimali. Viviamo un momento di ritrovata competitività, grazie ai tassi bassi e al dollaro forte, che di fatto aiuta chi continua a crederci. È dunque imprescindibile investire in stile, tecnologia e risorse umane, senza dimenticare che un buon brand deve sapersi radicare nel Paese in cui si vuole affermare. (m.s.)

Your family has achieved one of the most fascinating climbs right on top of the luxury pyramid.

What is your advice for producers of Italian excellence who would like to emerge?

I suggest to fully exploit the advantages of made in Italy and to explore in depth the manifold ways the Italian workforce can be used. Quite uniquely, in this country we have all the elements of the luxury value chain. This enables a company to exert meticulous control on production and thus to observe a flawless quality of execution. When this strength is combined with young designer talent, freshness is created and a message of absolute quality conveyed. We have to nurture the culture of excellence in our young talents, treating our employees and the environment fairly, therefore making our efforts sustainable.

What should entrepreneurs of the luxury business do in this very moment?

They should have the courage to invest, without losing their balance, but forcibly pursuing what truly are unqiue opportunities on capital markets. Due to low interest rates and the strong dollar, we are now living in a phase of regained competitiveness that should encourage us to be bolder. It is therefore of the utmost importance to invest in design capabilities, technology and human resources, without forgetting that a good brand has to thoroughly plant its roots in the country where it wants to succeed.
