Fashion for design addicts As a veritable home to several thousand fashion brands, many of whom are virtually unknown to the public at large, Milan has no equals on the global stage. At the same time, its main yearly event is the world-leading Design Week, with over 350.000 curious and thought-leading professionals from all over the planet attending.

The aim of this guide, therefore, is simple: to connect these two extraordinary and adiacent worlds by showing where, within the city, the most original fashion shopping locations can be found.

Our focus lies on research and quality, not fame - everybody knows that practically every luxury label with a global following has a glamorous flagship along via Montenapoleone or in the immediate surroundings. What is less known, but maybe more notable for those apt at refining their own individual styles, is where fashion research happens and how it is distilled. Well, the result of this effort lies right before you: being the trade magazine for the industry in Italy, we selected, with an insider’s eye, the less obvious yet more interesting shopping options. Enjoy.

La moda per chi ama il design Come sede di migliaia di fashion brand, di cui tanti sono eccellenze semisconosciute al grande pubblico, Milano non ha pari a livello globale. Allo stesso tempo, l’evento che attrae più persone in città è senz’ombra di dubbio la settimana del design, che ospita oltre 350.000 professionisti e curiosi da tutto il mondo. L’obiettivo della nostra guida è, dunque, semplicissimo: connettere questi due mondi straordinari, indicando dove si trovano le shopping location milanesi più originali dedicate alla moda. Il criterio di scelta è stato, più che quello della fama, quello della qualità e della ricerca - tutti sappiamo che pressoché ogni marchio di lusso ha un suo flagship in via Montenapoleone o nei dintorni. Ciò che è meno noto, ma forse più interessante per chi è abituato a seguire un proprio stile di vita molto individuale, è dove avviene la ricerca e come viene distillata. Sono proprio questi i luoghi, spesso strettamente connaturati al concetto di made in Italy, che la guida di Fashion magazine raggruppa. Per rendere la visita al Fuorisalone un’esperienza di lifestyle il più arricchente possibile.

The setting is a space featuring exposed stone walls, scenic chandeliers and accessories in untreated metal.

BOULE DE NEIGE

Boule de neige was founded in 2000. In the same year, it opened its first boutique in corso Como 3, followed by another in corso Como 8 in 2002 and a third in corso Como 4 in 2004. The eponymous collection has been sold for 17 years alongside a selection of lines by some of the most renowned Japanese designers: Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Comme des Garçons.

In June 2016, Boule de neige F/W 2017-2018 was entrusted to Romeo Gigli in order to start the gradual process of internationalizing the brand.

Boule de neige nasce nel 2000. Nello stesso anno apre la prima boutique in corso Como 3, nel 2002 in corso Como 8 e nel 2004 in corso Como 4. La collezione viene venduta per 17 anni accanto a una selezione delle linee di alcuni tra i più noti stilisti giapponesi: Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons.

Nel giugno 2016 Boule de neige f/w 2017-2018 viene affidata a Romeo Gigli, per iniziare un graduale processo di internazionalizzazione del marchio.

What is fashion to Piuarch and to you?

For 20 years now, Piuarch has been working with fashion clients, designing offices and buildings for Dolce&Gabbana, Givenchy and more recently, the Gucci Hub on via Mecenate. However, we aren’t fashion addicts at all. We think about fashion but don’t dress it up, rather we feel it is a mirror of the times that can help us to catch profound changes in society and the concept of beauty. Designing for fashion labels requires sensitivity to the schemes and core values of this sector.

Which fashion brands do you like?

I very much appreciate Uniqlo. It’s my favourite "designer's brand", because it has employed the best no-logo logo design strategy. The brand isn’t yet available in Milan but, fortunately, it soon will be in

Cos'è per Piuarch, e per lei, la moda?

Piuarch lavora da 20 anni per il mondo della moda, si pensi ai negozi e agli edifici per Dolce&Gabbana e Givenchy o al recente Gucci Hub in via Mecenate. Ciononostante non siamo per nulla fashion addicted. Quindi pensiamo alla moda senza vestirla. La considero un modo per osservare la nostra epoca, per interpretare le trasformazioni profonde della società e del concetto di bellezza. Progettare per i brand della moda richiede una sensibilità agli schemi e valori che caratterizzano quel mondo.

Since 2013 Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, known as the "salotto buono" of Milan, has been in full re-launch. No more historic shops or mass market chains, now it's time for luxury brands. The symbol of this transformation is Prada, that opened its first store in the Gallery in 1913 and one century later replaced McDonald's in a building now occupied

by Prada Uomo store, the new space of Fondazione Prada and Pasticceria Marchesi, owned by the group.

ISSEY MIYAKE

A new address for fashion and design people: for its first and only Italian flagship the brand Issey Miyake chose the newly restored Palazzo Reina, for a store that is a "manifesto" of a poetic and conceptual style. Designed by Tokujin Yoshioka, it is a 500 sqm. space, where Yoshioka presents during the FuoriSalone its "Glass Fountain" installation, in partnership with Glas Italia.

Un nuovo indirizzo che mette d'accordo gli appassionati di moda e di design: all'interno di Palazzo Reina, edificio storico appena restaurato, ha aperto il primo e unico flagship italiano di Issey Miyake. Founding the label in 1985 in Argentina, Lando Simonetti trademarked it in tribute to the international sport. At the centre of the Quadrilatero, the Milan store is spread out on two levels. How would you define your style?

My mantra is “doing better with less”. When I work, I always try to favour aspects like intelligence and sensitivity, rather than a vain search for style. I love timeless things for their function and elegance. I don’t like following trends and, even when it comes to choosing what to wear, I take the same approach.

What is the "not-to-miss" item in your wardrobe?

Basic garments, very flowing and white. I like simple clothes, elegant and comfortable, without any pretence of being a status symbol. In summer I like wearing a very large white shirt with a pair of Thai fisherman’s trousers. They are clothes that have been revisited over time and I’m comfortable with them. On the other hand, my relationship with fashion brands is anything but smooth. The few times I

Which are your favourite fashion stores in Milan?

10 Corso Como, because I like to discover new things, sophisticated and eclectic, selected with a certain sensitivity. I like its multibrand offer, because often single brand stores can be a little boring and superfluous.

How would you define your style?

I prefer to talk of lifestyle rather than style, because my idea of fashion is close to the view I have of design. When I have to concentrate to make the ideas flow, I need the utmost silence and tranquillity. That's why I tend to prefer garments with uniform colours, not tied to seasonal trends. I spend my days constantly thinking about design, so it gives me a sense of security to always do the same things. Every day I follow the same route, I drink the same coffee sat on the same chair in the same bar and I wear the same outfit: a white shirt, black trousers, black underwear and socks. My designs are continuously evolving and I don’t feel the need to seek changes elsewhere.

Come definirebbe il suo stile?

Preferisco parlare di lifestyle, più che di stile, perché la mia idea di moda si avvicina alla mia concezione di design. Quando devo concentrarmi per far fluire le idee ho bisogno del massimo silenzio e della massima tranquillità. Per questo tendo a preferire i marchi dai colori uniformi e non legati ai trend di stagione. Trascorro le mie giornate pensando continuamente al design. Così mi sento rassicurato dal fare sempre le stesse cose. Ogni giorno percorro lo stesso tragitto, bevo lo stesso caffè seduto sulla stessa sedia allo stesso bar e indosso il medesimo outfit: una camicia bianca, pantaloni neri, intimo e calze neri. Ciò dà pace alla mia mente. I miei progetti sono in continua evoluzione e così non sento la necessità di cercare cambiamenti altrove.

Pupi Solari opened her first store for children on largo V Alpini in Milan in 1969. Nine years later, in 1978, she moved to piazza Tommaseo, deciding to add womenswear. In 1991, the menswear division Host was launched. An address for anyone looking for contemporary elements in the classic style, shying away from fashion in the strict sense of the word.

The streetwear brand Dolly Noire was created several years ago from an idea by four friends from the Milan suburbs. Starting with T-shirts, their fame is also linked to the snapback, the baseball-style cap that is adjusted with a clip at the rear. Graphics are the other strongpoint: for every collection created by various artists, there's a world made up of T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, caps, backpacks and even covers for smartphones.

Do you have any favourite brands?

I don’t have any favourite brands and I see no value in extremely well-known, widely-advertised brands.

On the contrary, I find them so standardised in terms of image that I really shy away from them. I look at the content rather than designer labels and I prefer original products, even if designed by unknowns. If I have to give a well-known name, I’d say Armani.

Ha dei marchi di riferimento?

Non ho marchi preferiti e non do nessun valore ai brand ultra-noti e molto pubblicizzati. Anzi, li trovo talmente massificati a livello di immagine che li rifuggo proprio. Guardo ai contenuti più che alla griffe e preferisco proposte originali, anche se disegnate da sconosciuti. Se proprio devo fare un nome noto, dico Armani.

How would you describe your way of dressing?

Basic but not humdrum.

Essenziale ma non banale.

Where do you usually go to restock your wardrobe?

For some time, I've been going to stores with original lines and beautiful designs that respect women, with shapes, sizes and colours that are suitable for those, like me, who are no longer young and slender.

I usually buy clothes on trips, when I have some free time, and I buy very little in Milan. Martino Midali suits me, I also very much like the beautiful designs and the reasonable prices at Cos and, abroad, the basic lines of Uniqlo.

Di solito dove va per rifornire il suo guardaroba?

Da qualche tempo mi rivolgo a negozi con linee originali, dal bel disegno e che rispettano la donna, con forme, taglie e colori adatti anche alle non più giovani e non più sottili come me. Di solito acquisto durante i viaggi, quando ho tempo libero, e compro pochissimo a Milano. Mi trovo bene da Martino Midali, apprezzo molto il bel design a prezzi democratici di Cos e, all’estero, il basic di Uniqlo. (e.f.) ■

“Time to Color!” is the theme of Superdesign Show 2017, which is about to "come of age" (it started in 2000) and is all set to beat last year’s records (17,000 square metres of exhibition space and 130,000 visitors). There’ll be no shortage of spectacular installations at Superstudio Più in Via Tortona from the 4th to the 9th of April, such as those by Tokujin Yoshioka to mark 70 years of LG, or Jin Kuramoto (picture 4) and the London studio Raw-Edges for AGC Asahi Glass. The new arrivals include “Made in Holland” carpets designed by Karim Rashid and the best emerging designers in Poland, in a pavilion staged by Dorota Koziara. Not to be missed are the project of the French artist and photographer Charles Pétillon for Sunbrella and the exploration of food by PepsiCo with names like Mathieu Lehanneur, Luca Nichetto, Fabio Novembre and Patricia Urquiola. The "Discovering exhibition: People & Stories" (picture 3) is the work of a collective of new talents coordinated by Alessandro Guerriero while SMEs are to the fore in "Selected Objects". Focus on new materials is the aim of "Materials Village", staged by Material ConneXion and enlivened by an installation by Studio Patricia Urquiola for 3M. 3

"Time to Color!" è il tema di Superdesign Show 2017, che mentre sta quasi per diventare “maggiorenne” (è nato nel 2000), si prepara a battere i record dello scorso anno (17mila metri quadrati di superficie espositiva e 130mila visitatori).

Al Superstudio Più di via Tortona, dal 4 a al 9 aprile, di certo non mancano le installazioni spettacolari, come quelle di Tokujin Yoshioka per i 70 anni di LG, o di Jin Kuramoto (foto 4) e dello studio londinese Raw-Edges per AGC Asahi Glass. Tra le novità anche i tappeti “made in Holland” disegnati da Karim Rashid e i migliori designer emergenti dalla Polonia, in un padiglione curato da Dorota Koziara. During the Fuorisalone, the young creative is presenting “Itaca” at Base Milano, part of “Design Nomade”, an exhibition focused on agile design «for the new needs of contemporary living». Born in 1991 in Urbino, Elena Bompani studied illustration, film animation and cartoons before graduating in Product Design from Milan Polytechnic, she gained a master’s in Industrial Design at the Danish Designskolen Kolding and completed an internship in Copenhagen: her time there influenced her look. «I began to prefer minimal clothes - she explained - with little colour, perhaps with particular details but never showy. The Danish know how to combine elegance with functionality and this makes you feel at ease». What she can not do without? A black T-shirt and “regular” jeans, including the fabric («Untreated, without rips, the true denim»). She doesn’t like wasting time on shopping, so she shops online from platforms like Asos. She doesn’t have a preference for any brands but, if pushed, says & Other Stories and Cos, sometimes H&M and Zara.

She never buys anything to create a precise style, nor even to appear fashionable. «More than anything else - she says - I'm looking for comfort».

Di Urbino, classe 1991, Elena Bompani studia illustrazione, animazione cinematografica e fumetto prima della laurea in Product Design al Politecnico di Milano. Seguono un master in Industrial Design presso la danese Designskolen Kolding e il tirocinio a Copenhagen: un periodo che ha influito anche sul suo look. «Ho iniziato a prediligere i capi minimal - spiega - poco colorati, magari con dettagli particolari ma mai vistosi. I danesi sanno abbinare l'eleganza alla funzionalità e questo ti fa sentire a tuo agio». Di cosa non può proprio far a meno? Di una maglietta nera e di un paio di jeans, "regular" anche in fatto di tessuto («Non trattato, senza strappi, il vero denim»). Elena non ama perdere tempo per lo shopping, per questo compra online su piattaforme come Asos. Non ha veri e propri marchi di riferimento, ma se proprio deve citarne qualcuno dice & Other Stories e Cos, a volte H&M e Zara. Non acquista mai per seguire uno stile o sembrare fashion.
