t’s great to make a fresh start on Monday mornings, but it’s even better to begin creating your plans and dreams of the future on New Years. Maybe not all your expectations will come true but the right approach will surely bring you closer to your heart’s desire. The beginning of the year is the time to dream and for this issue we chose the things and experiences that make us want to grab our coat, run out the door, and explore the amazing cities of Italy, such as Venice. Now is the perfect time to see all that these places have to offer and it’s the best time to shop in January and Febraury both the sales and the new collections are in town.
M A RINA BUGR A NOVA E ditor in chief
The winter in Italy is a celebration of fashion and of beauty. In Febraury all of the world is thrilled about the Milan Fashion Week, while in January we have had the pleasure of enjoying the mens fashion shows and the company of the ultra-fashionable and elegant men of the Florence exhibition, Pitti. We talk about success and mens style with leaders in their own industries, jeweler Sergio Antonini and singer John Legend. And, of course, to find the key to a man’s heart first of all you need to glow from the inside out. Famous hairstylists and make up artists advize you on just how to do it, so that you’ll be on trend, that your face will radiate with health and your smile with happiness.
The feminine and playful patterns of pearls and diamonds are exactly what is needed for an after-winter awakening, their shimmering fire, luster, and scintillation will let you shine like the first light of spring.

FASHION SHOOT This country, full of beauty and history in and of itself, is a paradise for those who want to build their own story. No matter the instruments of your media, music, art, photography, or design, framed by the backdrop of the spellbinding Venetian sceneries every idea becomes splendid, she will be your muse for work or play. Our fashion story is about how to be elegant, and to be able to break the rules in a decadent way, as the Venetian aristocracy once did.

CAMILLA NIZZERO, illustrator
When I was a child my mother introduced me to painting and drawing. I grew up and studied design, painting and illustration, both in Milan and in London. After a decade as a graphic journalist in Corriere della Sera and Gazzetta dello Sport, I decided to go right to the heart of my passion. Today mine is an “ultramixed technique”: from watercolor to wood varnish, metallic paint, mixed materials collage and simple, classic black ink. What kind of experiences would you like to have in 2014? Drawing, drawing, and drawing. Letting my eyes explore the world and my hands translate it into images. Growing, living and enjoying the days with the two men in life, my beautiful husband and my beautiful son. My goals for the 2014 are to go swimming a lot and learning to play the cello, but these sound similar to those of the years 2013, 2012, ‘11...
ALICIA KUNKEL, journalist

My goals are to continue to develop my writing projects, prepare to graduate from the GIA with my Gemologist degree, move to a new home, and travel. Of course, to build my relationships with the ones I love. Love is at the top of the list this year! What kind of experiences would you like to have in 2014? Vacations! Visiting Florida and Europe if I can find the time. The Mercedes Benz Fashion Show in NYC. Try horseback riding.

VENICE’S CARNIVAL From the 15th of February to the 4th of M arch | Venice It is said that the Carnival of Venice started from a victory of the «Serenissima Repubblica» against the Patriarch of Aquileia in 1162, the people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square. Apparently this festival became official during the Renaissance. However, under the rule of the King of Austria, it was outlawed entirely in 1797 and the use of masks became forbidden. After a long absence the Venetian Carnival returned in 1979. The redevelopment of the masks began as the pursuit of some Venetian college students for the tourist trade. Today, approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for the Carnival. One of the most important events is the contest for "The Most Beautiful Mask", juried by a panel of international fashion designers. carnevale.venezia.it

VIAREGGIO’S PARADE February 16th | 23rd and M arch 2nd | 4th, and 9th | Viareggio
The first Viareggio Carnival parade was held in 1873 when a number of local citizens, as a sign of protest, decided to put on masks in order to show their refusal of the high taxes they were forced to pay. Its main characteristic is given by the parade of floats and masks, usually made of paper-pulp, depicting caricatures of popular people, such as politicians, showmen and sportsmen. The parade is held on the Viareggio avenue located alongside the local beach. It’s the main event of the Tuscan February, fun and very satirical. viareggio.ilcarnevale.com

MILAN IS A JEWEL
The history of the Antonini maison is also the history of Milan. Sergio Antonini, creative director of the brand, talks with us about the city, the jewelry and the art INTERVIEW: Valerio VENTURI
M Sergio Antonini is the creative director of Antonini Milano. After the products he designed for Harry Winston, he has realized the Antonini collections. Now Sergio continues his sophisticated and unconventional creations by winning the “Diamond International Award”, the most coveted recognition in the gold sector.
The brand was born in 1919, thanks to my grandfather, who traded in precious stones: diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds of a certain size. At that time they were viewed as good investments. Customers at the time were Bulgari, Van Cleef, the big names in the jewelry industry. It was in the third generation, particularly since 1988, that we began to offer our own line. How did you start designing jewelry?
I studied architecture, I had to work as an architect. But, for passion, I went to New York to take a course in gemology at the Gemological Institute and English. I started to work for the Petit Salon by Harry Winston, making drawings and following some laboratories. I realized that this world worked, that it had its own charm, and that the U.S. was intersted in Italian manufacturing.

SERGIO ANTONINI
r. Antonini, tell us about the story of your brand.
Where is your jewelry made?
They are entirely made in Milan. From the initial idea to the design, to the manufacturing. Everything is done here. What is Milan to you?
Museum of 900
What is the charm of ‘Made in Italy’?
We have production capacity for high-end goods, and we have tradition and resources. Starting from these attributes, we began production of signed Antonini. This was the beginning of our recent story in a field full of huge brands. What is special about the Antonini collections?
We want to create a product for select jewelry enthusiasts. The design is always simple. The more the design is clean the longer life it has. A jewelry piece with 18 frogs, 3 butterflies and 2 geese could be eclectic and fun, but after two years you can no longer see it. We have collections from 12 years ago and they are still being sold. The design should not be for the new trends, but to realize masterpiece. Who are the Antonini customers?
Many are collectors looking for unique pieces with specific qualities, created just for them and designed together. Our customers are mainly American, Japanese and Russian. Our jewerly always remains true to itself and recognizable, despite the different aspects of taste. We bring forth a piece with precise aesthetics.
It represents a lot. With all its flaws it also hosts fashions, furniture fairs, and young designers who produce locally. ‘Made in Italy’ starts here. Every week there is something to see: art, architecture, fashion, design, and presentations. You can go and get inspirations from what will happen in the aesthetic world. There are so many things to do! To breathe in this mood and atmosphere helps me a lot. In this sense, I say that it is a privilege to live here if you’re a creative person. You always have stimulus. Then if you want to visit other capitals, it’s all at your fingertips. I’m grateful to Milan, even though we are going through a difficult times as Europe is suffering.
cocktails, to dinner. Seeking therefore to get a lot of value for her purchase. I present the collections. Sometimes I suggest to focus on the person, what suits them and their lifestyle, like her height, how she dresses, etc.. The piece should always be worn. Then, beyond my advice, it happens that the woman will always choose a ring with pleasure. Why?
Because she tries it on, she sees it and it gives her great satisfaction. Sometimes I ask my women clients, “ How many rings do you have?”. With men it’s the otherway around. They prefer to buy earrings. Women like rings because they can see their beauty all day, where as men like earrings because we when we look at our loved ones we can see the earrings framing their faces. It’s all in the eye of the beholder!
Let’s talk about your new collection. What is the idea behind it?
A part of jewerly design today is to try to impress and not to do designs in which you believe. Instead, for us, all is a definite sign. We work on the colors and on the palette. Now I thought that it is appropriate to focus on the materials and workmanship. The new collection is called “Aurea” and it is made with gold, worked with the ancient technique of hammering, hammered yellow gold, even polished finishes. It’s a research on materials, on simplicity. How do you understand the expectations of yours customers?
Our clients are especially a woman who has a practical need to wear unique items. Items that she can always use: in the morning, to

What kind of relation do you have with Russia?
The Russian is a sophisticated customer who knows the quality of the product. The American points to look and style. They try on a pair of earrings, sees how it looks on them, and then they decide to purchase. The Russian looks at how it is made, the finished work. This gives me much more satisfaction. fashionandbeauty . it

PERSONA Interview
LOVE IN COMO
Singer, songwriter, actor, and style icon John Legend talks about his love for music and for his wife. He and his new bride were married on Lake Como where he wore a Gucci suite for the ceremony TEXT: Marco CASTROVINCI, PHOTO: courtesy of press office
the guests at the wedding, so we asked him to turn something that, if well managed, we could add to the video. We did it with the kissing scene in the end. A personal touch that I really like! Also “Made To Love” is very sensual, though in a different way.
It’s one of my favorite songs on the disc. The idea is to represent what it means to fall in love, in a symbolic way. You can see it on the video, full of f lowers, liquids, bodies that are intertwined. Conveying the passion of being in love.
S
tyle. It is in his warm voice, like velvet. Style, found in his eyes, noble and deep. And style in the music that he plays, giving “body” to the words and songs an awareness as he sings of who we are, the love, the roots. His own musical roots are found in the rich canvas of soul and R&B. He has fallen in love with Milan who always welcomes him with open arms and makes him somehow feel a little more at home. John Legend is a powerful combination of all of these things and his latest album, “Love In The Future”, epitomizes the elegance of the man. Inside there is a nod to the past, as well as a tendency to look towards the future. The songs are stunning and in some cases impeccably and superbly sweet, such as “Made To Love” and “All Of Me”. The video clip of “All Of Me” was shot on Lake Como, the place where he chose to marry the American model Chrissy Teigen. It

What is “Love In The Future” of which you sing about in the album? Is it a feeling about escaping from the past or more about learning something from it to treasure?
is the symbol of the entire disk, indicative of the sensual atmosphere wrapped in a glamour that emanates. “All Of Me” is a beautiful declaration of love. The video was shot in the place where you first fell in love with your wife, Chrissy Teigen.
It’s a very personal song, a celebration of love in general and in particular of the love I feel for my wife. We fell in love in Como, got married there and that is where we decided to shoot the video. The director is also a friend and was also among
I do not think we should completely leave the past behind, because you learn from the past and move on. As an artist, for example, I love soul music, a good mix of social commitment and love. Part of the goal of this new disc was inserted within the tradition of soul music with the intention, however, to innovate and to give a touch of freshness to the genre. It is important to know where you are, but it’s also important to just keep on going, always pushing beyond the boundaries of music. On a personal level it’s the same thing. You learn from the mistakes of the past, but always go forward and continue looking to the future.
“COMO IS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE FOR ME. AND I LIKE VERY MUCH ITALY AND ITALIAN STYLE.” You are friends with Kanye West. What is your relation?
Kanye is a great friend and a great partner in music. I will continue to work with him because, for me, it has always been from the beginning of my career. For “Love In The Future”, he is the executive producer and co-author for a few songs. He also helped with the cover artwork, chose the photographer, the director for the video. He’s a creative genius.
We were in Milan for fashion week, for an Armani fashion show. His PR invited us for a couple of days in Como and it was a wonderful trip, the first one that I had with Chrissy. For this reason, once our relationship grew, we decided to get married in Italy, on the lake. We also stayed there several times over the years. It’s a very special place for me. And I like very much Italy and Italian style.
What is the secret to writing a good pop song?
What clothes did you wear on your wedding day? Armani?
You must first be a good storyteller, sing well and be generous with the details. Be able to focus on your personal life, but at the same time be universal, talk about things that anyone can find themselves. This is what a good writer must do.
No, because in the meantime the famous PR from Armani went to work at Gucci! So, I chose a Gucci suite. And your bride?
My wife dressed in Vera Wang.
Tell us about Como and Italy.

Flowers, the symbol of spring and femininity, are back for the spring/summer 2014, but this time in a different form. They are brought to life with embellishment and embroidery; you can forget about being unnoticed. Bursting into 3D, flowers grew all over the runways. These details will make you pop like a freshly bloomed rose bud. The trend gave new meaning to the term flower power as the glamorous floral tribe of women are getting ready to awaken in the springtime.

9 Things That Inspire Me In February
February is the last winter month and with that in mind we can already envision ourselves listening to the twittering of the birds and the bright blooming f lowers, but spring is not just a season, it literally blooms also on clothes and accessories. For many years we were used to the minimalistic trend but in this new year of 2014, there is a return of decoration and of the exuberant style; but don’t worry, the minimalist look does not disappear! The collections are creative, courageous and fun. The materials, patterns and shapes are in continuous evolution. We have many options from which to draw inspiration from but one thing is certain, the winter is over!
MODERN AND CLASSY The precise features and its retro touch absolutely fascinate me. I love these jewels, which remind me of the art deco style. Deliciously French.
2.
UNDERSTATED SEDUCTION Stella McCartney’s fashion interpretation always looks fresh and new. Silk men’s jackets and trousers have become the signature of the designer along with clothes that possess a refined elegance and loads of personality. I really adore it.
3.
LOOK AT ME Volume, drama and length, there are no doubts about the makeup trend in 2014, only mascara. A nude makeup with a good dose of mascara which will enhance the eyes and give a fresh, young look.

PHOTOGRAPHY POINT OF VIEW During the final days of true winter it’s nice to relax with a good photography book. I recommend taking a look at the pictures of Inez & Vinoodh. They are two of the most popular photographers in the world. Their work really captures the interesting relationship between fashion and art.

CATCH THE MOMENT The duality of masculine/feminine is always in vogue and this Philippe Patek watch is a perfect example! I really like the old style characteristics and the masculine allure.
CAT EYES Some things never go out of style and this is shown in the incredible trend of cat eye sunglasses. Indeed more than 50 years later they are still alive and quite fashionable. A true style weapon for looking amazing.

IT BAG These colors and the strict cuts are typical of the Marni aesthetics. We can find these aspects in this bag, with a multitude of folding sections that are defined with volumes of geometric elements. I really like this shape!

FASHION T rend
U
ntil it made its way out of the gym and began being a part of our everyday outf its in the 80s, sportswear was a section of the fashion industry that the chic crowd would never be seen wearing. Sweatpants were a sign that you had let yourself go, choosing comfort over glamour. It is safe to say that those days are long gone, as for the next season designers showed us their ideas of sporty chic that never looked better.
Ever since it stepped out of the shadow a few season ago sportswear has been a strong influence on designers’ collections. For Spring/ Summer 2014 the trend is becoming more subtle and feminine with an entirely new embodiment of casual chic TEXT: Ivona JOSIPOVIC

SPORTY CHIC
Bermuda shorts made from a range of different materials, like black leather or white cotton, can add a dose of sporty, dynamic vibes to your outf it. Designers like Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang and Chloé chose to pair them on the runways with some chunky heels. Jerseys have become a girl’s favorite thing to wear, as we saw a lot of celebrities wearing them both as tops and dresses. The trend progresses to next spring in a more subtle way as we saw at the Céline show. Then there are the referee’s uniforms inspired tops with stripes and collars, so you might feel like handing out a few red cards while wearing them. Spaghetti-strap dresses with long and lean silhouettes were all the rage at the catwalks for Rag&Bone, Alexander Wang and DKNY. Bomber jackets are the chic replacement for the varsity jacket that was in last season. Prabal Gurung paired it with heels and a pencil skirt for an ultra feminine look, Neil Barrett stayed in the world of black and white, and so did

The uncrowned king of sportswear inspired pieces, Alexander Wang, presented another collection made for the urban, confident woman. Short skirts that will make you want to play tennis; shorts that will make you want to try boxing and oversized utility jackets with big hoodies – Wang claimed his throne once again. His first collection, for the house of Balenciaga, also had a place for a few sporty looks that continued the common concept of a bare midriff. Showing off your abs that you’ve worked so hard on getting is not saved just for going to the gym anymore. After all, showing some muscles while wearing sportswear goes hand in hand. Another brand that has always had an effortless sporty feel to it is Helmut Lang. The label presented mostly black and white pieces, with some pink exceptions, that mixed minimal with a sporty look in their trademark style.
CHLOÉ
If you prefer to indulge in this trend with just some accessories your options are numerous. Baseball caps and visors will be a great way to stay protected from the sun and they were spotted in shows like Frankie Morello, Marni and DKNY. Marni showed us that even feminine floral pieces could be topped with a sporty accessory. Sneakers are great for the next season, but remember to stay comfortable in a toned down version of your favorite Nikes. For those who prefer flats, this spring will be like heaven. Heels were banned from many shows or at least

partially replaced by minimalistic slider shoes that we saw from Helmut Lang. Other designers like Victoria Beckham, Givenchy, Phillip Lim and CĂŠline also had their models walking down the catwalk in flats. Sunglasses took inspiration from sports as well and using them can be a great contrast to feminine outfits. The new casual chic has become more subtle as it highlights a sleek sporty attitude. The lux athletic wear is no longer channeling the masculine tomboy look. The sports fashion turns unapologetically sophisticated for S/S 2014.

FEELINGS IN FASHION Fashion designer Daizy Shely has a strong personality and she is not afraid to reveal it in her work
The S/S 2014 collection by Daizy Shely speaks of fantasies, secrets, loves and successes, as well as failures and disappointments, happiness and loneliness. The designer expresses these emotions thanks to the combination of differing materials that are almost opposite to each other. To better represent this dichotomy she chose materials such as leather, which is strong and bold, and combined it with very light feathers. The prints of this fairy-tale like fantastic sky is made of transparent organza symbolizing the dream dimension. It is in contrast to the black silhouette of the girl, which is primarily the designer, but in which every woman can identify themselves in their own way and at different stages of life.

BLUMARINE A UNIVERSE
nna Molinari is the heart and mind of the project Blumarine, her adventure in fashion began many years ago and has grown exponentially. Now the brand is one of the most interesting of Italy.
Anna Molinari’s world is one of seduction, charm, great vitality and a spontaneous sense of fun. The designer talks to us about fashion and much more INTERVIEW: Valerio VENTURI
40
fashionandbeauty . it
Mrs Molinari, would you share with us a bit about your story?
The brands Blumarine and Blugirl always produce apparel that are distinguished by the excellence of the materials and craftsmanship of the work. Product innovation is implemented through constant research, with regard to fabrics, yarns and modeling. This fundamental choice has been accompanied by significant investment in marketing initiatives to convey an accurate image of our brands. It was important to implement strategic actions consistent with this approach. By opening select shops in the most cosmopolitan cities attentive to fashion, seizing the emerging markets, and maintaining the unique image, we
BLUMARINE
communicate in an effective way the philosophy of our brands.
I was born in Carpi, in the district of knitting, and I had the good fortune to follow the example of my parents who ran a knitwear company that created products for the most important labels. I have always had a great love for art which has helped me to discover and appreciate the aesthetic side of things. In 1977, together with my husband Gianpaolo, I created the brand Blumarine; the collection was the result of my taste and my feelings, which reflected my way of being. What do you like about your work?
PHOTO: courtesy of press offices
I am passionate about my job because I have the chance to express my creativity. I start over each season to design a style that is always different, depending on the inspirations that I have chosen to follow, while keeping me faithful to the spirit of the brand. I love to interpret the trends according to my sensibility. What is the source of your inspiration?
Everything can be a source of inspiration: a painting, a photo, a flower garden, a girl on the street, a particular emotion. The important thing is to keep alive the sensitivity and curiosity about what surrounds us, with particular attention to what is considered “beautiful” in its multifaceted expressions.
BLUMARINE
It’s a very subjective judgment, tied to a unique mix of femininity, elegance, personality, and an ability to express a style consistent with their own way of being and attitude. What are your plans for the future and will relations with foreign clients be important?
While hoping for a quick recovery to the Italian market, there is no doubt that the future is represented by the markets still booming, especially where the demand for luxury goods continues to attract our brands. We’ll continue to make contact with new distributors to agree on the opening of new stores in towns and cities for our strategic positioning. What are your favorite places in Milan?
The Four Seasons Hotel, the site of my professional meetings; and the fashionstreets, where I like to buy the latest fashion trends.
BLUMARINE
How did you begin your career in the fashion world?
What determines the charm of a woman?
BLUGIRL
I am proud that the Blumarine and Blugirl collections are made in Italy; the entire supply chain is made here. In particular, knitwear, which still requires great manual skills in the type of processes and applications needed to be a luxury product. For the most part it is created in the textile district of Carpi, where our company headquarters are. All this is, no doubt, added value for the foreign markets. I hope that this will continue in the future to avoid wasting the valuable know-how of our craft and industrial districts.
BLUGIRL
What are the strengths and weaknesses of ‘Made in Italy’?
Where are your ideal vacation spots?
As a child I spent summers in Forte dei Marmi with my family and I am related to the place for many sentimental reasons. Even Sardinia, a place of escape and relaxation, is an environment of incomparable beauty such as the Emerald Coast. fashionandbeauty . it

ATMOSPHERE OF LUXURY You have decided to be a part of the history of fashion by selling premium brand items, and you believe that it won’t do to save on luxurious interiors and equipment for your new boutique. And you would be right, because even if you wanted to save, you would fail due to brand management and consumer expectation. They would never support your meager approach, ideally nor financially. However, today it is possible to get good quality accoutrements for a reasonable price

uxury lovers are those who are not used to cutting corners for themselves. Do you think they will over look you making such an attempt? Brand class requires a certain atmosphere, one where it is a pleasure and feels quite natural to spend large sums of money. However, you can still get your wants and needs met, says Dmitry Grachev, the owner of the designer furniture manufacturing company Alterna. Today he will let us in on the secret of how to approach the fashion business wisely. Dmitry, if I have decided to open a premium multi-brand boutique, how can I achieve my goals? Where should I go?
48
fashionandbeauty . it
What should I start with?
If you have secured a location then it is time to begin the process of realizing your vision. Architecture is not the area of our specialty, however, we can make recommendations to you of reliable associates, both foreign and domestic. They are: Carlo Calligari, Anna Maria Schevola, Eliza Secci and, of course, our star Francesco Freso; he is the lead Dolce & Gabbana boutiques creator. What is your reason to come on board at this stage? I mean, as a designer to bring together the customers and the architectural firm? They could offer readymade projects. What is your interest?
It’s not about money, if that’s what you
meant. We don’t make any profit from bringing the sides together (laughing). Our interest is to bring a seamless result. When we’re on the same wavelength with the architects, the process goes faster and is more economical for the client. I am committed to the principle of reasonable sufficiency, both in life and work. Still we cannot avoid the stereotype that Russian quality leaves much to be desired. People are used to thinking that it is better turn to the West if they need good quality.
Yes, that is a widespread belief, but most often it’s far from reality. I can only judge by the experience of our company, so I am sure it is a myth. After 10 years of work we
FASHION R esolution

have learned to offer European quality at a cost equal to the West and often even lower. Working with locals can save you a lot of time and money! To have foreign experts on site to give support, delivery, customs clearance, and installation can come at a high cost, 35-45% of the equipment price. We can help you to save on it. Do you support your customer from the design stage up to the store opening and then continue supporting him after the doors are open?
Exactly. We help to create a design project, take intermediate measurements, premises re-planning and renovation. We can quickly change something at the final building development stage, and solve any possible problems within 18 months of the warranty period. Yes, and after all this we do not leave our customers aside, the furniture is in daily use, so from time to time it needs some treatment. And what if you’re dealing with foreign companies? Every “wrong” centimeter may cost a pretty penny. So you want to say that ordering equipment abroad is, mildly speaking, wasteful?
I see no reason for it, because everything can be done in Russia without customs

and other expenses. Store location is of no difference. We work all over the country and maintain partnerships with the former USSR republics. Alterna’s technologies and equipment are of the European level. All new materials and design ideas that appear on the market become a part of our arsenal at once. We participate in international exhibitions three to four times a year to stay on trend. Working with premium brands, famous Western architects and designers is a precious source of experience and relevant information. Now we’re working on a Dirk Bikkembergs project in Novosibirsk. Your client list is really impressive! Michael Kors, Iceberg, Sonia Rykiel, Juicy Couture... Can you add some more?
Gladly. These names please my ear: Chaumet Jewellery, Emporio Armani, Billionaire, Barbara Bui, Richmond, Guess, Joop, and Strellson. But, to be honest, I’m more proud of working with Russian multi-brands, the Krasnodar and Ufa department stores, Excelsior and the Grande Boutique where Gucci, Fendi, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, and Yves Saint Laurent are presented. I should mention Rostov Soho Gold which offers Stefano Ricci, Zilli, Brioni, and Kiton. The Moscow
city mall, Tsvetnoy, and the Audi Exclusive showroom are also among our projects. It seems we can name your “celeb” projects for a rather long time!
Right you are (laughing). In general, if you decide to open a boutique, you know where to go for premium store equipment and a luxury atmosphere. Michael Kors store, Moscow
THE ONLY WAY IS UP! The shop furnishings have to correspond to the status of the luxury brands represented in your store. But it’s more than that. Your clients have to feel the exclusivity of doing shopping in one of the fashion capitals of the world. They should be endowed with the confidence that this is the territory of high style wherever your location is. Don’t you think that the premium class atmosphere affects the purchasing decision? Our successful clients know the answer: sales rise upwards. Our partners: Emporio Armani, Sonia Rykiel, Chaumet, Michael Kors, Billionare, Dirk Bikkembergs, Juicy Couture, Barbara Bui, Iceberg, Richmond, Strellson, Joop...

The church of Santa Croce
lorence is a very famous city throughout the world, and it’s easy to understand why. This giant outdoor museum is the capital of Tuscany and probably the most celebrated region of Italy. A petite but active city full of architectural masterpieces and amazing works from the past; especially of the Renaissance and Middle Ages.
that is full of ancient shops. It is definitely worth visiting the Gothic church of Santa Croce, the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians; such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and Rossini. In the city you will also find the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, with the Cupola del Brunelleschi, the Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery of St. John.
Do you love art? Then you must visit the Galleria degli Uff izi, they have a special collection of antique paintings from the Italian masters. From there a stroll along the streets will leave you breathless as you experience the fantastic masterpieces in the piazza Signoria, the centre of Florence, and Palazzo Vecchio, or the Ponte Vecchio
After so much art you may want to turn your attention to the other thing Florence is known for, shopping! The district of luxury is around Via Roma, piazza Repubblica, via Cavour, piazza Strozzi, via della Vigna Nuova and via Tornabuoni. Here you can find all the boutiques of the famous Italian brands, like Prada, Cavalli and others.

Do you need recommendations for shopping hot spots? If you like jewelry you have to visit the Anna Maria Cammilli Store (via Vacchereccia 12/r, annamariacammilli.com). The pieces are designed by Anna Maria, a painter and artist, and are made with care from a family traditionally active in the jewelry and goldsmith’s art. In the boutique, there are the new collections inspired by the beauty of nature and of Tuscany. The flagship store of Stefano Ricci (via dei Pescioni 1, stefanoricci.com), in historical Palazzo Tornabuoni, it is a cozy and luxurious place to find clothes, bags & accessories (shirts, ties, jewerly, belts, etc.) for men, made of quality leather, silk, and other high-quality materials. Ricci also produces perfumes and a home collection of porcelain, coffee and tea sets. Everything is 100% made in Italy. Need other suggestions? Go around and see for yourself. Florence never disappoints, and still manages to offer a great experience, thanks to a perfect mix of the tradition and modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere.

FASHION Wardrobe The beginning of my career. Fashion started to be a part of my life very early on. When I was quite young my brother liked to create outfits for me. At 14 I became a model, a job that still gives me great satisfaction. I have walked for Gaultier, Galliano, and Margiela, while I worked for magazines, such as Wesrtuff, The Face, I-D, and Blitz. In London and Paris I found my great love of collecting vintage clothing. I began working as shop curator in dedicated stores. Fashion for me is a game, my dollhouse, with a lot of fun and interpretation. It is important to be fashionable, but also to be unique, recognizable and individualistic. My style. I have never liked things in series. I do not need to create that must have membership or to think of owning something that millions of other people can have. I prefer the one of a kind, unique pieces, which belong only to me and that is identifiable only with me. I have always liked vintage shops, flea markets, salvation army, or like when I was a kid, the vintage shops in Prato, where I threw in the mountains of rags with the joy of a climber. I had the good fortune to have worked with many designers and I get a lot of gifts, prototypes, samples, etc., every time I’m happy to wear them and interpret them in my own way. Artist’s muse. It’s always been my dream, since childhood, when someone asked me what I would like to be, my response was “The Muse”. Little effort, a lot of visibility, but above all, to be present in the moment of creation. For work I visit many studios of artists, painters, photographers, designers, and directors and what I’ve always loved is to follow their

I am always busy with the agency that I created, Q Connections, which keeps me engaged in the field of art, fashion, design and publishing. The agency was born to create connections between young innovative talents and the proper industry recipients and the press. Furthermore, this year the exhibition from the book Buio Reale will be brought to Milan. It is a photographic project developed with the photographer Riccardo Bagnoli. Also, on January 12th there will be a tribute to my 30-year career at the Candy’s Room. It will be an exciting evening blending fashion and art, creativity and experimentation.
“I like to do research, find and discover new young talents. In this picture I’m wearing a pied de poule piece by Sara Spadone, a new designer that I discovered a few days ago, and now she is an important presence in my wardrobe.”
My favorite fashion places in Milan. Designer’s ateliers, vintage shops, such as Franco Jacassi, Cavalli e Nastri, Lipstick, and The Navigli market that is held on the last Sunday of the month. There are also small shops that are doing a lot of research, such as Tourbillon in Via Baldissera 4 or 65mq. A Couture Note: Jean Paul Gaultier launched a ready-towear clothing line, Junior Gaultier, in 2009. After successfully introducing his fashion forward take on children’s wear Gaultier has been inspired to present a petite fashionista’s dream, Junior Gaultier Couture. He drew inspiration from the Indian-inspired dresses from his Spring-Summer 2013 haute couture women’s wear collection. Now your princess can don a prized dress for special occasions that is sure to set her apart in a tailored raw silk bodice and a long layered skirt in tulle. The ensemble is finished off with a bolero which buttons in the back and is accented with sparkling Swarovski crystals. She can choose from the ivory and padparadscha colors that these beautiful dresses are presented in. There will be an exclusive 90 dresses created from each color and are available in sizes ranging from 4 to 14 years. The dresses were playfully shown wearing patent leather, laced-up, black and white ankle boots for an urban princess look. The gown is priced approximately at $1,200. fashionandbeauty . it

he great actress and fatal beauty, Elizabeth Taylor, collected not just men’s hearts but also brilliant diamonds. For Elizabeth extremely expensive jewelry was one of the greatest pleasures in life. Her collection is legendary and remarkable, boasting some of the greatest pieces of our time. Jewelry has historically been a good investment. Eventually diamonds, like antiques and good wine, become more and more valuable. Diamonds are always in trend and even above it. They are invariable symbols of luxury, status and power on both sides of Atlantic. Interests for minimalism or baroque styles, the propensity of jewelers to make creations bursting with colors or, on the contrary, monochrome designs - all of these aren’t a threat for brilliants. Diamonds, like all classics, are eternally popular. Furthermore, there is a great variety of diamonds. They can be massive and expensive or petite and affordable. Classic brilliant diamonds are colorless and transparent. However, special rare gem colors can occur in nature, these are diamonds that contain trace elements that were captured within the diamond’s crystal matrix as it was created. For instance blue diamonds contain boron, while canary yellow and champagne diamonds make up the most commonly found trace element of nitrogen.

BRILLIANT DIAMONDS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CONSIDERED TO BE FORMAL GEMSTONES WHICH REQUIRE AN APPROPRIATE ENTOURAGE Brilliant diamonds stand alone when it comes to beauty, as their light, f ire and scintillation speak for themselves. A plain strip of gold set with diamonds shining with all of its facets is a contemporary classic, just as popular as a chainlet with little diamonds or diamond earrings. Jewelers aren’t afraid to combine diamonds with other minerals and these, sometimes unexpected combinations, attract even more attention to the jewelry and endow it with special symbolism. We can f ind this as sapphires framed with diamonds signify eternal love; in combination with rubies diamonds symbolizes passion and with emeralds the hope for reciprocal feelings. Consistent value throughout the ages and a global desire to own diamonds kept these gemstones within the strict framework of the cultures of the times.
So, in the last century in certain cultures only married women were allowed to wear rings with diamonds, while young women were content with brooches and pendants. Brilliant diamonds have always been considered to be formal gemstones which require an appropriate entourage: spotlights, fur capes and evening gowns. However, in recent years women often wear diamonds in the daytime, pairing them with jeans to go to the cinema, not to the theater. Such democratization of diamonds not only increased the assortment of jewelry by leading brands, but presented women one more possibility for style experimentation. During New Year’s eve, jewelry fashion undergoes an expected surge of interest for diamonds. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pendants and even theatrical designs. Choose your jewel and let yourself shine!

The magic of Christmas and the magnificence of the East, the on-coming of spring and the choreography of the underwater kingdom; the Russian ballet inspired the masters of Van Cleef & Arpels to create the Ballet Précieux collection
rom time immemorial dance was a favorite source of inspiration for the house of Van Cleef & Arpels. The f irst ballerina-shaped brooches that initiated this long love story were created in the 1940s by a passionate fan of ballet and opera - Louis Arpels (see Ballerina brooch,1947). Soon this virtue-based artistic union of Claud Arpels and New York City ballet founder, George Balanchine, strengthened this link. In April 1967 Balanchine presented a ballet named "Jewels". Inspired by emeralds, diamonds and rubies, the ballet astounded the whole world. In 2007 the jewelry house, in cooperation with The Royal Ballet of London, repeated the "Jewels" performance on the occasion of the 40th anniversary. In honor of this

event Van Cleef & Arpels released the Ballet Precieux Jewelry Collection. Today the duet of these two art forms continues, and this year Van Cleef & Arpels starts a new chapter, dedicated to the great traditions of the Russian ballet. The house presents the luxurious jewelry collection, Ballet Précieux, inspired by 5 great classic ballets: "Swan Lake", "La Bayadère", "The Nutcracker", "The Gold Fish" and "The Rite of Spring". Black and white contrasts adjoins with the festive Christmas scarlet shades, and the colorful eastern palette, supplemented with seawater azure tones, amongst a lush verdure of spring colors. All these different parts of the collection are unif ied in one theme - a graceful ballerina.

In the 1930’s Norwegians were producing moccasins and began exporting them to the rest of Europe. Americans visiting Europe started purchasing them, but their

popularity began when Esquire magazine featured them. However, it was Gucci, with his iconic 60’s design that has shaped the way we generally see loafers today. Worn by both men and woman, young and old, these shoes have become a staple in the society of many countries. This versatile shoe can be worn on a relaxing Sunday afternoon or for normal business on a Monday morning. Frida Giannini, Gucci’s creative director, said that she "plays with the design each season. Updating the shape, materials and details, but the shoe’s essential beauty and functionality remains the same".

LE VAPORISATEUR TOUT NOIR To recount the creation of his ‘atomizer’, Serge Lutens says, “Why redesign an object which is already perfect for this purpose? I just had to make it pret-a-porter”. He was referring to the same object, however, created in the eighties. Le Vaporisateur Tout Noir is a little gem of a design, almost vintage to be collected. With it you get two exclusive fragrances, which were until now only available in Salons du Palais Royale, with the cloche characteristic designed by Lutens himself, Iris Silver Mist and Fourreau Noir.

7 The violet orchid will be the color of 2014. Tom Ford anticipates the trend of the year with a shade so perfect it is already an icon, Violet Fatale. It is to be worn only on special occasions and was chosen from the personal color palette of the designer. The extract of soya beans and the butter of Murumuru are the ideal ingredients for a super creamy texture. The pigments undergo a special treatment to provide a pure color, characterized by a proper balance of brightness, creating the perfect elegant touch.

The latest creation from Roberto Cavalli deserves to be praised. Created by the British master perfumer, Louise Turner, Nero Assoluto chooses the most precious and soughtafter key ingredients. It opens with a seductive harmony of orchid, a provocative top note that awakens the senses and captures the attention with great sensuality, prolonged by a rich and resonant heart note of dark vanilla. A strong base note of ebony wood gives breadth and grandeur, making this a truly unique fragrance.

BEAUTIFUL HAIR 10 Daily Beauty Tips For Your Hair! PHOTO: Lior SUSANA, HAIR: Matjaž ŠIŠKA, MAKE-UP: Francesca ANGELONE@MKS MILANO, BEAUTY EDITOR: Paolo SALERNO@MKS MILANO
T
he beginning of the year is the moment for our New Year’s resolutions and we all promise ourselves to “do better” and “do more”, while trying to treat ourselves, keeping in mind our health and beauty. And what if this year we started to love our hair? Here are 10 tips that anyone can quickly put into practice to strengthen their hair and make it more beautiful each and every day.
1. LET’S CUT!
Why not start with a new haircut? A cross between a superstitious ritual and an important act of beauty, shortening your hair will certainly benefit it immensely. But be careful; it won’t reinforce it, as is generally believed, rather it will protect the scalp. Therefore protecting the “terrain” that nourishes the hair itself from the action of excessive shampoos and detergents, which will rinse away more easily.
2. A NICE MASSAGE…
When brushing your hair, never forget to thoroughly massage the scalp, concentrating mainly on the base of the crown. In this way you will activate, albeit very slightly, the circulation in this area, increasing the supply of nutrients to the hair follicles. This greatly increases the well-being and strength of the hair.
3. BON APPETIT!
Hair is mostly made up of amino acids and proteins, some of which are not produced by our body, such as keratin, and for this reason it is important to get them through our daily diet. Say hello, then, to: lentils and beans for vitamin B1; eggs, salads and green leafy vegetables for vitamin A; vegetable oils for vitamin E; and red meat, which contains iron, as opposed to white meat. Say no to very strict and unbalance diets, and instead say yes to fruit and vegetables.
4. WASH AND DRY YOUR HAIR GENTLY
Shampooing, if done wrong, can be one of the causes of increased stress for your hair. Always remember to use water that is tepid and not too hot, in fact excessive heat tends to make the hair dull. Also, do not dry by rubbing but simply dab with a soft towel.
5. 100 BRUSH STROKES
Never brush your hair vigorously after washing as hair can actually break. If you have very long hair and it is necessary to untangle it with a brush, do so in the shower under running water. This allows the comb to delicately untangle it in a less aggressive manner.

CARRYING OUT A SPECIAL TREATMENT AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK GREATLY HELPS THE ENTIRE CROWN 6. BE NATURAL
Preferably use brushes with natural bristles for styling your hair. Natural bristles, in fact, are more delicate on the skin, thus limiting dandruff and giving shine to your hair.
1. SUBTIL ELIXIR PHYTO - PARIS
1
A light oil with a gossamer texture. It possesses a delicate fragrance with notes of banana leaves, passion flower, gardenia and exotic musk. A unique blend that smells like the beauty rituals of the past. Use before shampooing.
7. CONDITIONER
Some say that there can never be too much conditioner, but this is not so. It is an essential cosmetic for having soft, bright and fragrant hair, but the application should never be excessive. If you do so your hair will look heavy and dull. An amount slightly more than a full teaspoon is more than enough.
8. KEEP AT A DISTANCE
It may seem trivial but, according to hair care experts, the thing that causes the most damage to hair is their greatest ally - the hair dryer. The excessive heat that we sometimes use when drying hair will damage it, drying it out, and destroying softness and tone. When using the hair dryer keep it at the right distance, at least 20 cm away from the hair.
9. REINFORCE IT
2. ELIXIR ULTIME KÉRASTASE
Carrying out a special treatment at least once a week greatly helps the entire crown. They are ideal for deeply nourishing the hair, repairing it when damaged and protecting it in potentially harmful situations, such as excessive sun, cold, humidity or during highly stressful times in life. Choose the one that is most suitable for you, relax and let it act. The results will be immediate.
For all those women who are looking for the perfect hair treatment Kérastase gives a new dimension to the magic of aromatic oils with Elixir Ultime. Just for you, this is the first bath oil that is highly effective. More than just a treatment, it is a real gem of beauty, ideal for deep cleansing and rendering extraordinary vigour to your hair.
10. COVER IT WELL
In winter low temperatures can affect the health of hair, along with smog and excessive humidity. The remedy is simple, cover it with a beret, a cap, a hat or a scarf. Try to choose fabrics that are light and aerated and which allow the scalp to breathe and do not “suffocate” it too much.

BEFORE THE SPRINGTIME COMES During the winter, and the much anticipated spring, your skin should be nourished and pampered. How? We asked Fabienne Rea, a makeup artist and beauty consultant INTERVIEW: Paolo SALERNO, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices
106
fashionandbeauty . it
WINTER IS A COMPLICATED SEASON FOR OUR SKIN, FORTUNATELY, THE BEAUTY MARKET OFFERS EXCELLENT SOLUTIONS and how we can soothe it?
Redness, dryness, and in cases of sensitivity, severe irritation of the skin are the consequences. Today, fortunately, in the market there are specif ic treatments of cleansing, moisturizing creams, and masks, which exert a soothing effect that is capable of immediately countering the thermal shock. In addition to those suggested by the cosmetics, which play an active role in the prevention of damages from the external factors, which remedies and solutions can you offer for everyday make-up?
Fabienne Rea, make-up artist and beauty consultant
F
rench-born, but Italian by adoption, Fabienne Rea is one of the most famous Italian makeup artists. Her professional career began in Rome, next to the famous Gil Cagné, and continued in Milan, where she now works in the publishing and fashion industry, alongside the most important Italian and international head make-up artists. She is a personal assistant to many private clients for tailormade and unique make-up looks.
Who is better than Fabienne for getting advice on how to care for and nourish our skin in preparation for the spring? January and February are the complicated months for the skin: we have to endure the cold but, at the same time, prepare for the arrival of spring. What are the cosmetic remedies
that everyone can apply to protect the face from the cold temperatures and the rain?
It is true, the cold of the external temperatures slows down the activity of the skin. It causes some negative affects by which we all suffer: sensitivity to temperature change; redness; widespread dryness, especially for fair and thin skin; and around the eyes and on the lips, which are perpetually subject to cracking. It is important to protect your skin with moisturizers that have richer formulations, nutrients or multi-active face creams made from vegetable oils and butters, in order to restore the hydro-lipid film that covers the surface of the skin. What are the consequences to facial skin from exposure to extremely low temperature
Even the daily make-up with its most recent formulations, encounters the hardships of the winter season. The light foundation, more suitable for springtime, suiting your skin tone should be replaced with texture rich formulations for dry skin, or soothing agents preceded with anti-redness bases which will prepare the complexion. An illuminating powder will complete the brightness of the skin in the days when the light is dim.
for the care and beauty for this lovely upcoming season?
I think it is fundamentally in the nutrition. Use seasonal fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C, which helps the immune system, along with natural anti-oxidants, for example pomegranate or cranberry juice, which also prove useful for stimulating microcirculation.
HOT TIP
I think it is fundamentally in the nutrition. Use seasonal fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C, which helps the immune system, along with natural antioxidants...
Let’s go into detail: which foundation is best to choose for the winter?
It is better to choose mineral based formulations which help the performance of the makeup during the extremely cold and wet periods. In a few weeks it will be spring, the skin will, therefore, be nourished and “reinforced”. Can you give us some advice

I am a natural beauty supporter and convinced that every woman is beautiful without makeup. But sometimes you want to look special. It is enough to simply smooth out skin tone, moisten lips well, gently apply mascara onto the eyelashes, frame eyes with golden shadows, and highlight cheekbones. Voila. You have the whole world at your feet!
108
fashionandbeauty . it
2.
Before proceeding to create the look, I cleanse and moisten the skin. Only after this can the foundation be applied. This time I chose Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation with average density coverage. It makes the skin matte and lasts a long time. I use M.A.C corrector to hide dark circles under the eyes and fix the foundation with a silky-textured transparent powder by Shiseido.
I applied a primer, Benefit Stay-Put, onto the eyelids. This helps makeup last longer than usual. Moisten lips with Lip Volume KIKO Make Up Milano balm, which helps to perfectly apply lipstick. Now the face is ready to work with. Slightly emphasize the eyebrow shape by putting the eyeshades from Obuse Eyebrow palette using a beveled brush and apply with short touches technique.
3.
Eyes. First I draw an eyelash line with a soft-on eye pencil and slightly blend it with a small brush. It makes the eyes look deep and expressive. Our model has big beautiful eyes, that’s why we need just to accentuate them with eyeshadows on the lower lash line to create an evening look. I chose a trendy copper color.
4.
If you want to create a bright make-up look, you can apply the same shades on the upper eyelid, more emphasis on the outer corner of the eye and blurred closer to the inner corner. To open the eye apply light golden shades on the inner corner of the eye.
5.
I use my favorite Slinique High Impact Mascara for eyelashes. It creates the effect of natural volume and extends the lashes well. Using the handy brush you can even make them curly.
6.
Emphasize cheekbones with a deep pink blush that has a highlighter effect, making them flicker slightly. Add plum-colored lipstick as a final touch. To prevent it smearing and make it last all night long I put the M.A.C Prep + Prime on the lips. and then blended the surface with a pencil matching the lipstick’s tone.
7.
We achieved this exqusite aristocratic image. A classic style would suit the case. Her hair combed back to the side parting and frames the face with a beautiful wave. To open the face, tie the hair into a tight ponytail. fashionandbeauty . it

Mazzolari is perhaps the most famous perfume shop of Milan, because of its different stores and the idea of luxury, opulence, and unbridled refinement that inhabits every corner, each detail. Strolling through the stores conceived by Augusto Mazzolari in 1940 is an intense emotional experience, both visual and olfactory.

For almost thirty years Profumo in Milan, is synonymous with refinement. Hidden in one of the most picturesque neighborhoods of the old city, Brera, the “artist’s quarter”, this precious treasure trove of essences is the perfect place to discover jewels of perfumery. Annik Goutal, Master Perfumer and Gantier, and Frédéric Malle are just some of the perfumery houses which met the taste and favor of the Italian public for the first time here. The store is also the venue for courses and encounters with noses and master perfumers to tell a story—that of fragrances—which is often unknown and certainly of great appeal.

Elegant, contemporary, luminous, welcoming; Parfume di Calè is not only an “accent on perfume”, as its refined slogan states, but it is most of all a comfortable living room. Here the journey of fragrances are revealed from their creation to the precious final box, amidst exclusive brands and chats among enthusiasts. The luminous atmosphere, which literally “creates” the space, flows along the walls and the velvet of the dark parquet floor.
Dora, Rosella and Giada; an entirely feminine tradition for one of the most famous perfume stores in Milan. The three generations of this legacy began in 1951, the year in which Dora and Mario Brambilla began to sell products for hygiene and cosmetics. Then they opened their first perfume store to the public in 1961, offering exclusive fragrances to their customers. “To narrate the perfumes, revealing the details, is the most beautiful aspect of my work,” says Sorella. “I like to experiment and conceptualize original essences which cannot be found elsewhere. Those who come here find not only an exclusive fragrance but also, above all, a unique experience”.

INTERVIEW: Paolo SALERNO

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER YOU ARE WORKING ON AN ADVERTISEMENT, A WEDDING, OR A FASHION SHOW, IN PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH IS A CRUCIAL DETAIL
Y
oung Matjaž is already one of the most interesting prodigies of the international hairstyling community. His talent has been nourished with more than 10 years of practice, with important commissions. Elle, Cosmopolitan and Gloss are just a few of the magazines for which he signed a number of cover stories. For us here at Fashion and Beauty he has created the stunning hairstyles which you see in the pages of Beauty Review and in the cover story. During the shoots we took the opportunity to get to know him better. Let’s start talking about the mood chosen for our edition. What has inspired you?
I thought of simplicity: natural volume, soft, shiny hair for simple and quick hairstyles. These can be used on different occasions, even daily, and can be modified with minor changes. To make it fashionable there are clumps and strands that extend onto the face.
These are the details that make the editorial full of magic and beauty. Working on a photo shoot is one of the most important tests for a hairstylist. What would you recommend to those who are just starting out?
I believe that for every project the preparation and the creative phase that precedes the real work is the most important thing. The mood board that gives the idea of the mood, the exchanges with the client, and the research phase are critical. “It does not matter whether you are working on an advertisement, a wedding, or a fashion show, in photography research is a crucial detail.” What are the cuts and hairstyles that will arrive in the coming months? What will be the style to have for the spring of 2014?
I think you will continue to play with your natural color, with more details towards
texture. Nothing plain. Have fun with ruffled hairstyles, ruffling braids and a soft chignon on the nape. These are simple to implement, fast to arrange and highly effective for every occasion, from the most formal to the most casual. And speaking of products, what beauty tips and advice can you offer us?
One of the things that I always recommend is to apply the conditioner during the shampoo, to nourish and soften the hair. In addition, another piece of advice is to use a mask from time to time. It should be chosen according to the texture and, of course, according to the condition of your hair. It is always important to choose professional products and ask your hairdresser’s advice on how to use them properly. It will certainly not be cheap but the health of your hair is priceless.

Natural mineral water is a good way to enhance health.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN PARIS Jean-Jacques Sempé, the French cartoonist, created a humorous label for a limited collection of mineral water by Vittel. Inspired by cafes in Paris, he created a little illustrated story where each character has its own charisma and soul. Sempé’s style lies in light humor and kindness which is reflected in more than 30 albums by the artist. And this little collaboration of an original French brand and a master shows the pure spirit of France.

PURE LIGHT AND PERSPECTIVE
Claudia Montevecchi, of BMMC Architecture, explains the design of this flat, which was realized in Milan, near Sempione Park, for a couple of journalists from Corriere della Sera. It offers something that is very different from the original appartment. Keyword: light! INTERVIEW: Valerio VENTURI, PHOTO: courtesy of press offices

ARCHITECTS IN MILAN
BMMC architecture is an architectural and interior design studio. Since 1999, they are mainly engaged in the renovation of private homes, offices and public spaces. The attention to detail and careful selection of materials, colors, and finishes are at the heart of their minimalistic style, which weaves past and future into a basic and bright present, all to live in. Claudia Montevecchi is a partner of this company. www.bmmc.it

he apartment 008/B is a project from Claudia Montevecchi, of BMMC Studio. We spoke with her about this flat. “My clients arrived with another project that did not satisfy them: an apartment with more room. The new space is divided into 2 units: there’s a studio apart.
How have you worked starting from that idea? We have enhanced the area of the apartment facing south, on Sempione Park, which is the long opening onto the terrace. Along this side there are only doors, so we had to work to let in all the light and to make that be seen at once: something that doesn’t have barriers. Now, as you enter you see all the windows. been made into 1 with 3 spaces: the living room, the kitchen - a central cube - and the consulting room. Was it difficult to create this new area? It was difficult to make a separate kitchen. I thought of a cubic block with a cut that would allow one to cook while looking at the living room. Everything is suspended, there are no walls that hold up the whole design. Talk to us about the furniture. To achieve this goal of “opening” the floorplan we had to work on this. The library, for example, is formed only by long shelves, which offers a lot of space for books, but without barriers: it does not block the space and it helps the prespective. And for the rest of the house? The main bathroom has been achieved by using a beige resin. The result that this material offers, combined with the slate black, is cool. The second bathroom is cut symmetrically with the door: going inside, you can not see the w.c. Symmetries are important. Do you have a precise aesthetic? I try to understand what a space tells me. I take care of the existing condition that is there and I listen the needs of the customer. For example, the number of rooms. I then propose some ideas and I see how it goes.

The “kitchen-cube” separates, without obscuring, the flow of light and the gorgeous views of the living room, dining room and consulting area
What do the different spaces tell you? Sometimes I find the rooms strange or complicated because of their shape. In this case, I tried to enhance the shape: it takes on more character. Rather than to reduce the disparity, I like to exasperate it. It’s what Philippe Starck does using gigantic disproportions but in the right way. Before removing something, you try to give it character and function, using “tricks”
THE BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF THE PARCO SEMPIONE IN MILAN LED THE RENOVATION OF THIS FLAT
How has your work changed? By updating the techniques to make energy-efficient architecture. I work in synergy with technicians and installers. And, the novelty influence of the design. Now an architect has to be the coordinator of a team. Who are your favorite designers? I appreciate Herzog, Piano, Foster and Nouvel. Also Navone, Urquiola and Stark, who makes fun things. I really love the style of the northern Europeans. They create superessential or understated designs but they are precious. The things seem simple but they are not! Why is Milan important for your inspiration? Here we learn how to be sophisticated. This is an international city and there’s the design week. You are constantly updated. I like it!

“I’m from N.Y., and I find that Milan is the Italian city nearest to the Big Apple. Full of energy, it offers museums, monuments and beautiful streets to walk.”
6. MICHAEL LILIN
“I lived in Milan for three years. It is a beautiful and exciting city. It could use a lot more of its cultural heritage, though, as I often find myself lending a hand to Russian tourists in search of information.”
FREDERICK FORSYTH
“Milan has it all: fashion, art, culture and industry. The dynamism of this city is known in the world!”

HUGH HOWEY
“I was very impressed from Milan. It’s the cosmopolitan center of Italy, but it also has a great historical heritage. I have found wonderful churches, here is the Last Supper! And then so many different souls, from medieval streets to Navigli, which reminded me of Brooklyn. Here I ate the best sushi ever.”

LUNA HOTEL BAGLIONI
San M arco 1243, Venice, (+39) 041 5289840, baglionihotels.com
The Luna Hotel Baglioni, the place of our photoshoot, is a fascinating piece of Venetian history. Just a short walk from Piazza San Marco, the building dates back to 1118 when it was a convent, becoming an aristocratic palace, a refuge for the Knights Templar, and finally it became a safe and comfortable haven for passengers where it took the name of Locanda della Luna. Today, eight centuries later, the oldest hotel in the city is still enhanced by the striking details such as: stucco walls, decorated Murano glass chandeliers, and the watercolors on the wall. The ceiling frescoes of the ballroom, now the dinning room, are assigned to the students of Tiepolo, a Venetian painter of the eighteenth century. There are also precious golden ornaments. Everything is here to tell the story of the majestic and aristocratic city of Venice “la Serenissima”, which was ruled by the Doge, and was the Eastern gate of Europe. fashionandbeauty . it

In Milan the choice of restaurants is very extensive, in fact, it is full of places where you can taste the most varied specialties. Here, our six favorite places all around the city TRUSSARDI ALLA SCALA
Memo is the first movie theater which has been transformed into a restaurant, creating a space with lots of style and charm! Its recipe for success is based upon being an amusing place where you can spend a pleasant evening, from the aperitif to the after dinner drinks, enjoying a full calendar of performances accompanied by a sophisticated menu. The ambiance of Memo is inspired by the 30s and is dominated by warm brown tones creating a really thrilling and elegant atmosphere. memorestaurant.com
In a beautiful building overlooking one of the most important symbols par excellence of Milan, we can find the Ristorante Trussardi alla Scala. The chef Andrea Berton is one of the greatest representatives of Italian cuisine, guests are invited to discover excellent seasonal ingredients and a rich and varied wine selection. Stylish and casual, as chic and elegant as Trussardi, the restaurant presents a dining concept inspired by the sophisticated, cosmopolitan mood of the modern world. trussardiallascala.it

They offer their guests impeccable service and a varied menu that changes according to the seasons and focuses on the best traditional Italian recipes. The rooms are elegant and stylish, while at the same time being warm and welcoming! We highly recommended Ristorante Piazza Repubbulica for their great attention to detail. piazzarepubblica.com

Vi a B orgospesso 12 | (+39) 02 7600 2572
Specializing in Argentinian cuisine, the dishes present inimitable flavors prepared by the chef who always pays careful attention to tradition and quality. The highlight is the meat and the grill, where you can watch the cooking through the glass window of the kitchen. A large selection of wines and some of the finest Argentinian selected champagne. It is considered the best Argentine restaurant in Milan.
More than a restaurant, it is a symbol of great Milanese food. Not far from Via Monte Napoleone, it is located right in the center of the fashion district. The interior is very stylish, in shades of red and beige and accented by wooden design elements. It is certainly a must try for an authentic taste of the old and new Milanese recipes, along with specialties in the Tuscan tradition.

If you are a gourmet connoisseur, your first choice in Venice must be the Canova Restaurant. The Chef Cosimo Giampaolo will tantalize your senses and excel your expectations with each lush plate
TEXT: Marina BUGRANOVA, Valerio VENTURI PHOTO: Lior SUSANA
Authenticity and freshness, this is the philosophy of the Canova restaurant in Venice; winner of the Fogher d’Oro and Gambero Rosso awards. The delicious flavors and enchanting appearance creates the intimate, cozy atmosphere in the best of the Venetian culinary tradition. How do they achieve this? By using extremely high-quality, fresh, seasonal products. The wine cellar is also considerable, offering a wide range of national and international labels to choose from. Seafood, pasta, cookies, each a delectable specialty to the merit of Chef Cosimo Giampaolo. The Italian born chef has worked around the world before coming to Venice, in such cities as: Moscow, Dubai, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Stuttgart, and Podgorica. We’re lucky that now this charming and capable artist is a resident of Italy. What is the ideology of this cosmopolitan Chef who uses herbs and spices of his own garden in the kitchen of Canova? His main inspiration comes from the sea. Each dish is an explosion of luscious cuisine. When savory dishes spring forth from natural and safe sourcing of fresh daily ingredients, it’s precisely then that the Mediterranean cooking is shown at its best. These dishes are not only enticing, but also healthy and wholesome. So, what are you waiting for? Trust us, make your reservations now! Art of Chocolate was founded in 2007, by Marina Sanvito and her son Bjorn F. Nielsen. Their desire is to offer everyone the opportunity to enjoy the Milanese artisan chocolate of Italy in all its shapes and forms. A point of reference for chocolate authors, thanks to the refinement and quality of the products combined with great professionalism and courtesy.
Gay Odin chocolate began production in the ‘20s. This historic shop in Naples, has expanded to Milan some years ago. It offers all kinds of chocolate, made with ancient recipes and high quality raw materials, while closely following all the rules of artisan chocolate. A wonderful chocolate factory!
Venchi is a historic Italian chocolatier. The company originated in Piedmont. The Turin-based company began producing fine Italian chocolate in 1878. Now they have opened a number of shops around the world. In Milan they also offer very delicious diet and gluten-free chocolates. Chocolate isn’t their only forte, they do a special ice cream, all the flavors are fabulous.

CHOCOLATE? ITALIANS DO IT BETTER: FROM NUTELLA TO AMADEI, ONE OF THE MOST PRECIOUS CHOCOLATES IN THE WORLD
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Yes, Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump was right; life is unpredictable, and the chocolates are not all alike. But, one thing is certain, the chocolates are delicious. For Atzecs it was like gold, and today it is still treasured! Cocoa solids are good and contains alkaloids such as theobromine, phenethylamine and caffeine, these have physiological effects on the body and are linked to serotonin levels in the brain. Research has found that chocolate, eaten in moderation, can lower blood pressure. What does this mean? That it is something delicious and healthy, if taken in small quantities. So, try the best choco-shops of the city. It’s perfect as a gift to someone special or for a moment of private sensory excitation.

ROMANTIC MILAN
Life is full of love for Valentines Day in Milan. The city offers amazing restaurants and fun events to spend as a couple or with friends TEXT: Valerio VENTURI, PHOTO: Aya BOUZAGLO, courtesy of press offices
S
apessi come è strano, innamorarsi a Milano”. Translation: You knew how strange it is, to fall in love in Milan. So sings Memo Remigi, an Italian singer of the ‘60s, in a popular traditional Italian melody. Yet the city is rich in beautiful, picturesque scenery for the romantic evening of two lovers. Especially on the day dedicated to couples, Valentine’s Day, in the finest district of the city, such as the Brera. There are many romantic restaurants where you can dine and opportunities to do appetizers and spend a fun evening. Are you single? No problem, there is also a place for you in the area! You can drink a Martini, eat Italian food and dance the night away in the company of your friends or the guests of the exciting clubs.
HOTEL PALAZZO PARIGI
Corso di Porta Nuova 1, Tel (+39) 026 25625, palazzoparigi.com
The gourmet experience offered by Palazzo Parigi sets new standards for quality and creativity. Guests can choose between the stunning restaurant, one of the best in Milan, by Chef Carlo Cracco, or an informal lunch or dinner surrounded by the stylish ambience of Caffé Parigi. Carlo Cracco, who can boast two Michelin stars, offers a cuisine marked by the great nuances of the Italian tradition, providing his guests with a know-how where the name of the recipe is of secondary importance compared with how it is cooked and served. The restaurant Cracco at Palazzo is truly unique, a refined venue for the delicious flavors of Italy, as well as for the style and gestures typical of the Chef and his staff. The stylish, unique surroundings of Caffé Parigi, is already considered among one of the best bars in Milan. It’s the perfect setting for relaxed social meetings.

EL TOMBON DE SAN MARC
Via San M arco 20, T el (+39) 026 599507
El Tombon de San Marc is a historical bar in the center of Milan. It has changed several times with the ownership. Now it is more of a restaurant than a bar with traditional Milanese cuisine. The interior is beautiful, it seems to have remained as an old style brasserie and the personnel is young and friendly. The food is good and it’s a lovely place for a nice romantic dinner, or maybe stop in for an Italian aperitivo. Another point is the fact that it is located in the Brera district which is known as an artists’ neighborhood and a place of Bohemian atmosphere. It is sometimes referred to as “the Milanese Montmartre”. Other features that contribute to the character of Brera include sophisticated and romantic restaurants and bars, antique and art shops, colorful street markets, as well as fortune tellers’ booths.

Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido
Franciacorta Rosé, Solive
Pinot Bianco S. Valentin, St. Michael
Everyone knows Sassicaia, the Tuscan wine famous throughout the world and appreciated by the best international sommeliers. Expensive, but worth it. A guaranteed winner.
The Italian answer to the French rosé champagne. Fragrant and soft, perfect for a drink or dinner by candlelight with the love of your life.
The Pinot Bianco Sanct Valentin Cru of St. Michael Kellerei is made in the heart of the Alto Adige white wine area, about 500 meters above sea level. It is particularly fruity with a pleasant level of acidity.

This is a perfect time to celebrate love with wine, or to give it as a gift for your loved one. We suggest to drink fine wine with a lover and a happy heart! For example, try Solive Rose, a sparkling wine from Franciacorta, or Pinot Bianco Sanct Valentin, Sassicaia, Domain Ott, Cristal, Cartizze Foss Marai. Each a romantic liquid pleasure. venturivini.net
IN ITALY, IT WAS A SPRING FESTIVAL...
In Italy, Valentine’s Day was once celebrated as a Spring Festival, held in the open air, where young people would gather in tree arbors or ornamental gardens to listen to music and the reading of poetry. However, over the course of the years, this custom steadily declined and has not been celebrated for centuries. In Turin, it was formerly the custom for betrothed couples to announce their engagements on February 14. For several days ahead of time, the stores would be decorated and filled with all manner of bon-bons.
Prosecco Cartizze, Foss Marai The hill of Cartizze is a vineyard of 107 hectares of grape vines, owned by 140 growers. The Prosecco from its grapes, of which comparatively little is produced, is considered to be of the highest quality, the “Grand Cru” of Prosecco. Try Foss Marai.
Rosé de Provence, Domain Ott
Cristal, Louis Roeder
The Bandol terroir meets the nose first, featuring mourvèdre aromas and notes of citrus fruit, as well as very fresh hints of liquorice. In the mouth, there is a fine balance between freshness and liveliness, with aromas of white fleshy fruits.
Cristal is the “chic” Champagne produced by Louis Roederer. It seems to be made of gold. The price of the bottle is for an exclusive market, however you in-turn receive the equally exclusive pleasure that drinking glamorous Champagne is all about. fashionandbeauty . it

Clean, simple and spacious, the most coveted handbag of the season is the Saint Laurent’s Sac de Jour. Designed by creative director, Hedi Slimane, this bag is available in two sizes, medium and small. It is part of the permanent collection from the Saint Laurent brand, which contains all of the most iconic pieces. The beauty of the Sac du Jour lies in its simplicity, a discreetly embossed logo and a weighty padlock are the only details. Geometry combined with harmonious proportions and a refined attention to detail make this bag perfect to wear from morning to night.
