FASHIZ’ RUNWAY London has always been fashion visionary and it did not fell short its reputation during the 2009 YMFW: the 2009 Young African Fashion Week. Impulsed by Desiree Mutandwa and Chido Mutukwa, both supported by the Anais Events Management company, the aim of this mini Fashion Week was to promote young British African designers. Cameroon, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana and the West Indies were represented by very inspired male and female designers. We will remember the well-mastered mix of fabric influences such as satin with ready-to-wear loincloth and the will to go beyond traditional African couture to pitch in classic pieces such as cocktail dresses, pleated skirts and oversized bags.

Edito « Every step leads towards an expected result; the hope is measured by the fighting spirit’s degree. « Fatou Diome. By the brilliant Senegalese writer’s quotation, I’d like to sign this Editor’s letter, on this day when FASHIZBLACK blows its 1st candle, 1st of a long list we hope. In the meantime, the thanks and the stepping back over the past year are necessary. There were fights, sometimes from the outside, sometimes from the inside, sometimes it was self-struggles. September 14th, 2008, a little bit naive and unconscious of the task ahead, we began this journey with you. Then, from month to month, you made this magazine grow, thanks to your constructive criticisms, your time, your pieces of advice and sometimes, your spontaneous encouragements e-mails that we always read with a twinge of emotion. In one year, the FASHIZBLACK community got bigger, a little more masculine and above all, got really set up. With more than 35.000 unique readers a month, YOU showed us of your trust and we acknowledged it. That is why, on behalf of the whole magazine’s team, we say a huge THANK YOU. You remain the major reason for our pugnacity. And it is as well for this Byticular reason that we wanted to make a special «DIVAS» issue, because who, better themselves represent the ambition and this fighting spirit today, in a world where nothing is for granted? Other subject: having received numerous e-mails of English-speaking readers, we decided to publish this magazine in the Shakespeare’s mother tongue, so that nobody will feel discriminated against. And finally, for this new publication year, our magazine will be issued bimonthly from now on. Need information and fashion news fresh out the oven? No worries, the magazine’s blog is there for it (www.iam.fashizblack.com), and let you know about our favorites, day after day. Once again, THANKS TO you all, keep on being that Fashiz ‘, and see you next year for a birthday that we hope to share with some more of people. P.A.N.

Thighs (HARD !) By F.R
Longtime labeled as vulgar and remembering us of the oldest profession in the world, “la cuissarde”-the thigh high bootis becoming more accessible and it is developing into the “It Shoe” of the most fashion forward. For the diva, the word to live by will be audacity, so we won’t have any problem adapting. In order to avoid being taken for what you are not, here are a few tips.
F
lat or with heels, the boots should preferably be in suede or in real leather and above all never too shiny which mean looking cheap and by consequence, too common. Choose colors that are fairly dark, black, gray, or brown for those that like color or are more outgoing; otherwise it’s better to go with the first rule. Wear the thigh high boots in leather with a high waisted short (a MUST HAVE THIS FALL) like seen by Chloe, a baby doll dress or a balloon pant seen by Isabel Marant or even a sweater dress from the collection of Paul&Joe. For the biggest divas among us a (faux) fur lined coat in order to never be passed unnoticed despite greyness.

SHOULDER PADS By F.R

t was now 20 years ago. The « Working Girls » were calling for their emancipation and their urge to conquer the world along men. A prelude to Divas… They all had one thing in common: Shoulder pads. Worn as symbols, they gave them a strong and confident style. In 2009, everyone from Balenciaga to Louis Vuitton as well as Zac Posen agrees to say that this season cannot do without shoulder pads. So here are a few pieces of advice: how to wear them before you end up looking like an American football player! - Contrary to what one might think, shoulder pads fit any shape. Whichever your shape, you can easily wear them. -The tip to balance the silhouette and to look like a vamp: wear a belt.
18
- Less is more so wear a few accessories only. A big necklace or a bracelet will do. - For those not wanting to invest in a new item, vintage shops are full of 80s treasures so do not hesitate to rummage about to find a unique item. - Studded, baroque, fringed or even feathered, shoulder pads take different forms this season. So GO FOR THEM…relatively speaking of course!

FASHIZ’FOCUS
Boxing Kitten By M.C
Can you tell us who is Botting Kitten, why choosing this name for your brand and since when did you start ? Boxing Kitten began in 2007, and was conceptualized by me Maya A. Lake. I got the name from a rather vivid dream I had in 2005. I dreamt that me and my star cat traveled the world performing boxing feats for everyones fascination. I woke up feeling as if I had lived the dream in some alternate world. As I discussed it with a friend they suggested the name «boxing kitten» to me, and it pretty much stuck. I love the juxtaposition of the feminine and masculine, and found it wildly appropriate.
Which type of women, according to your philosophy, should wear your clothes ? My philosophy on clothing is that if you feel comfortable, and confident in what you’re
wearing then you should wear it! I definitely feel that the women who relate to my line are daring, strong willed, and not the faint of heart. In other words, my clothing isn’t exactly for the shy, wallflower types. Yet at the same time I like to keep a more subtle aethetic to the silhouettes. I think being and feeling sexy is important for a woman, but it doesnt have to be over done, or overt.
Why did you choose to use african patterns ? Can you name a few you used the most in your collections ? I truly love ankara fabric. The prints have a very rich history, and I wanted to use a fabric that has a connection to something deeper. I think that when someone sees ankara being used in a dress they have very specific things that they associate with the fabric. Whether it reminds them of their mothers, their culture, their west African heritage, or a point in histo-

FASHIZ’FOCUS ry, I think those associations give the clothes much more meaning. I am also fascinated by the sordid history of the batiking techniques used to make ankara. Boxing Kitten was initially inspired by women from the Black Power and Civil Rights movements. Many women involved in the Black Power movement wore ankara fabric and other African fabrics as a way to display «cultural nationalism.» I chose to use ankara combined with silhouettes inspired by women involved in the Civil Rights Movement to create a new aesthetic.
Do you think one day the african perception of Fashion would be internationally recognized ? I think it already is. There are African influences on the runways everywhere, from New York, to Byis. Also Arise Magazine is an amazing publication! Their fashion shows and magazine layouts are doing alot for the African fashion scene
Which designers, models or artists inspire you the most ? Mes plus grandes sources d’inspiration fémiThe women who inspire me the most are the ones that I have named my pieces after such as; Eartha Kitt, Pearl Bailey, Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Nichelle Nichols, Diahann Carroll, and Tina Turner. I also draw much inspiration from the fearlessness that these women posses. I absolutely love what Yinka Shonibare has done with ankara, and his commentary on authenticity and origin narratives is incredibly fascinating. He inspires me to keep on creating and pushing boundaries.
52
Do you have any muse ? My muses change. But the women that I love to design for are mostly my close friends, they are the ones that make me the most happy to dress.
We saw a lot of hot celebrities such as Solange, Erykah Badu and others wearing your designs. How did you succeed in making it happen ? For anyone out there who is looking to create a path for themselves in fashion; you must be persistent! Love what you do, and believe in what you do, and others will be gravitated towards that energy.
Any style tips to share with us for the upcoming Autumn/winter season? Be weather appropriate! and wear The Eartha dress for a sexy fall silhouette..
Are your designs available in France or Europe ? Not as of yet, but hopefully very soon. For now the online store will ship out everywhere.
Fashion Is Black or Black is Fashion ? Black is definitely fashion!

FASHIZ’TRENDS
And then there was light… By F.R
The fall season for the diva will sBykle like the stars. Between sequins and gems, she will have a multitude of choices for this comeback so that her clothes reveal the brilliant female that she is. The Diva is a “female jewel” and first and foremost sequins are leaving the red carpet and are invited into everyday life. From day to night. Avoid falling into the total “sequined” look. The step between a glamorous air and a decorated wreath only takes one too many accessories. So, whether it’s shoes, dresses, skirts or accessories, the sequined item of your ensemble should be the shining light of a more toned down outfit. Invest in a vest or a blazer with sequins, preferably of a dark, somber color, black for example, seen in the collection by Warehouse or blue night seen in TOPSHOP. Or for the more daring divas, wear gold sequins seen done by Mango. For those that are a little more discrete, sequins can be worn in accessories (clutches, shoes, hair accessories). A new arrival this season is sticky sequins seen in the collection by Doo-Ri, a customizable item to try at home. From now on keep the classic sequined dress for the warmest nights of the fall.

HAIR COMEBACK By Mademoiselle Maissa During the vacation season, everything is good, everything is going fine. As soon as you return, you have to be twice as careful and count on nourishing hair care, or the sun and ocean will compromise your hair. During the summer, exposure to the sun and swimming dries out and damages your hair. Upon returning from vacation, hair is two times more dry and devitalized.

Beauty Prescription : Take care of damaaged, dry, brittle hair by intensely hydrating it.
+ Hydrate your dry hair with a hair oil. This is a much more desirable option than using styling creams that are only good for greasing hair without actually caring for it. Mineral hair oil naatMineral uses Brasil nuts to treat dry hair with split ends, making the hair silky to the touch. It restablishes the natural sebum, an essential element for the health and vitality of hair. Its reByative powers bring back softness and shine to your hair. Nunnat Brasil nut hair oil in large and average bottles. 5,OO euros.
DAVINES Shampoing et conditionner Chocolat 1O,64 euros ET 17,20 euros In order to sublimate the highlights acquired during the summer and return body to your dull hair, don’t hesitate to use shampoo for colored hair that has the advantage of being less agreessive and less radical for dyed hair.
Hair growth products do not mix well with curly hair, and if you think the opposite, beware the breakage! As soon as we return from vacation, our financial status does not always allow us to immediately make an appointment with the hairdresser. As a result, we try to a do-it-yourself method with an at home relaxer. In order to do this, use the Phytospecific relaxer. It is certainly more expensive than other relaxers on the market, but it is nevertheless more effective than its competitors and way less expensive than the hair salon . Photospécific Index 2 : Normal hair, thick and resistant ; Index 1 : Brittle and fine hair. Recommended Price 25 euros.
We’re not giving up on straightening hair, but we have to be mindful to the protection of our hair from the drying heat or flat irons. Indeed, that’s the least you should do, knowing that your hair is already fragile due to relaxers and your vacation. decried as much as a praised man. Stephane Doukoure left no one indifferent while he was still alive. If his true wealth, his work, his company, his eccentricity have always been controversial, maybe it is what made him one of the most influential African « artists ». The overexposure of his basic wealth signs, the glory made to ill-earned money ( varied swindlings ) are several elements leading nowadays a Byt of African youth and diasporas to fall into an infernal spiral where you have to look wealthier and wealthier, spending more and more money…before sometimes tragedy strikes.
eras that his country Ivory Coast had to undergo. And since his death, he was empowered the creator of African Pop in the 200s. We are grateful for this. Thank you « Douk Saga » says Sagacité. DeByted on October 13th 2006, no one has been able to take his place ever since. If the core of his message can be questionable, we have to acknowledge the visionary aspect of his reasoning as he was the first one to use the ideals of a great Byt of an African population usually fascined by Hollywood and its stars. Rest forever in Peace.
But it does not matter! He was leading a movement which suceeded in gathering and have a complete continent ( whathever religion or region ) dance. Stephane Doukoure wanted to be a pacifier and an ambassador of joy during the dark Fashizblack Magazine - Sept 09

FASHIZ’MUSIC : JAY-Z’ BLUEPRINT ON THE GRILL You surely did not miss the release of the so expected album of the one said to be the best rapper in the world. From tricky sentences to criticism towards the Hip Hop industry (Death Of Autotune), Jay Z has been more than present in the medias during the last months. This time, it is his album which is controversial. For some people, it symbolises the rapper’s rebirth when others decry the loss of his knowhow. Even within Fashizblack redaction, two camps are fighting. So for especially for you, we decided to edit two different points of view! Time to choose your camp!

e thought it would never make it. Heralding it for more than two years, Jay Z was cunningly playing with our nerves! We have to say that between « Ain’t I », « Jocking Jay Z » or « When the money goes », the definitive list of songs on the album was published very late. And ultimately thumbing its nose at the rapper, this album was available for free on Internet a few days before the official release . Jay Z has always been an egocentric rapper rarely featuring other artists on his albums. And we have to say that BLUEPRINT 3 is full of featurings and it is not always of the best effect. The overestimated Drake, the shiny Mr Hudson or even Rihanna…Jay Z wanted to call the young generation ,the big brother of whom he calls himself but 3 is too much. The album is desultory, « Ready as it gets » flow and rimes are less worked on , his featuring with Timabland on « Venus vs Mars » is a failure in terms of composition and « Forever Young » core and form are not interesting. But within all these featurings, good surprises are to be found: « Empire state of mind » with an Alicia Keys in good shape, the chorus vocal quality constrating with « Run this town ». The two New Yorkers can be proud of this new hymn to the Big Apple. As for « Already Home », the sound is from Kanye West and you can hear it from the very first seconds. If the theme recalls of some others ( « 30 Something », « Beach Chair »), it meets the expectations of « Jigga ». And at last, my heart goes for « So Ambitious », the chorus and production of which were made by Mr Pharell Williams. On any other album, this song would have gone unnoticed but as Blueprint 3 is of poor quality, Pharell production seems to be more ore on than usual. Since « I just wanna love you », Jay Z’s first true hit, the chemistry between two artists has always been present ( «Frontin’ «, « Allure «, « Excuse Me Miss»...) whereas Timbaland seems to be confused by his Pop’n’B time. As for me, I think that at the end of his career ( he is alsmost 40 ), it is high time for Mr. Carter to end it on a decent note with people of his level like Mary J Blige, Just Blaze, Eminem or even Nas. He is already working on a new album. Let’s hope that if it does not equal Reasonable Doubt, it will be as good as The Black Album or why not Blueprint 2!

FASHIZ’MUSIC By Keyzz. It is not an easy thing to give a classic album a sequel. In fact, Jay Z is back since 11th September 2009 with his 3rd « Blueprint », a sequel to the two albums praised all around the world, especially the first one which was straightaway considered as a classic by XXL and The Source magazines. Quite rightly On this new album, Jay Z is once again in association with Kanye West, who worked on the first two sections. No I. D famous for his work with Common is always present but unfortunately, he is only co producing songs like Louis Vuitton Don and signs one true production: the great « D. O. A (Death Of Autotune)», the first single from the album. Timbaland, Neptunes and a Swizz Beatz in great shape are also featuring. Côté invités : Les newcomers* Drake et KiD CuDi. Et quelques habitués de marque : Pharrell, Young Jeezy, Alicia Keys et Rihanna entre autres. Aucun ne réussit à lui voler la vedette. As for the general interpretation: « Jay-Hova » may be not the youngster he used to be so he may be less spontaneous but his rimes are still undoubtely vivid. If some people will find fault with it, they will agree on the global choice of instrumentals, which are not, let’s face it, the nice mess they were on Blue Print 2. Some songs are complete failures like « Venus VS Mars » when Jay Z cannot even enhance this Timbaland bad production. Otherwise tracks follow on and are not alike, which is ideal to listen to everything at once. The album ends on a good vibe with the most pop song of the tracklisting « Young Forever », which sound was made by Kanye West and the young Mr. Hudson. As for featurings: the newcomers Drake and KiD CuDi. And some famous regulars: Pharell, Young Jeezy, Alicia Keys among some. No one to take the top billing from him. The Blueperint 3 gives you a good global impression but still has too many twilight zones to be considered as a true Hip Hop classic.
