“TO INSPIRE AND TO BE INSPIRED”
Last month was hugely successful for FAUVE and we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support. We are really pleased that you clearly appreciate what we are putting out there for you. November was “fashion month” for the new collections photo-shoots. Now, I personally am fairly ambivalent when it comes to such matters. I like to think I’m not sartorially challenged as such, but when it comes to fashion, I’m a self-confessed “if it fits well and doesn’t cost a fortune then I’ll buy it” kinda guy. That said, we know that many of you are interested in the world of fashion, and therefore I hope you find December an interesting issue.

– INTERVIEW / DESIGNER –
Tell us how your jewelry business got started: In 1999 I finished playing in a Bulgarian gypsy folk band where we played one year in Prague and one year in Amsterdam. I was tired of playing in smokey bars – my vocal chords were done. So I traveled with my sister to Paris and Barcelona and was very inspired by jewellery I purchased in these cities. So on the flight home I decided I would start to make Jewellery. So I taught myself and started doing collage with random old bits silver and costume jewellery found at the markets in Melbourne. Within months I was doing small markets and within a year I had two small shops in Melbourne What is the KT aesthetic? Eclectic. I am personally a little bit bohemian, little bit punk, little bit vintage, little bit designer, little bit hippy yoga gal, little bit rock n roll, little bit sentimental, little bit romantic, little bit of a spiritual warrior. My Jewels are also a combination of many materials mirroring my personal style. Who do you see as your customer? People who are not afraid to be unique and who resonate with the complexity and strength of the Jewellery on a creative level or a spiritual level. Often the Jewellery appeals to people who are following their personal desires in which ever field – my customers are VERY diverse and I LOVE this. I had an Anesthetist buy the BREATHE ring recently which I thought was funny. Often people are attracted to a certain piece, which is often something they need on a deeper level. Well… we all need to BREATHE don’t we but sometimes in times of stress we shallow breathe which leads to anxiety. Often we need to be reminded. I hope my Jewellery can do this. I have also had feedback that certain necklaces bring ‘luck’! good sex…money etc!!hehehehe. ITS TRUE! Maybe its just a placebo effect..but hey what ever works right! Power of the mind is EVERYTHING. What is a typical day like for you? Kisses from my daughter, coffee, yoga, juice, lunch and then the ‘working day’ starts from 12-5pm in the studio tinkering about and shuffling silver around the table.
Did you always know this was something you wanted to do? I had no idea. I just roll with the creative punches. How do you balance working from home with being on the road ? Where does your personal life figure in? Before I had my daughter Roma 4 years ago, my creative life was my entire life. It didn’t start and stop. My creativity has taken me on a wonderful world wide journey. It hasn’t been easy. Following your dreams never is. It’s a bumpy road but an exciting adventure. I have been a gypsy for a long time but since Roma I built a gorgeous home here in Bali where we live and create from. I love traveling to the Antique and collectors markets in England and Italy. Next year we will go again and I will work on a new ‘one off collection’. Where do you hope to be in five to ten years? Healthy, calm and surrounded by my family and friends in a dynamic community of like minded people. Work wise I hope the creative journey continues it doesn’t matter in which direction as long as I keep learning and growing and filtering this knowledge back into my work. I want to play music with a wonderful band and raise awareness and money for charities I believe in. I am very interested in mental health and the care for children in need. Tell us about your amazing work station. Well it’s the place most people become obsessed with when they come to my studio! Its been the same since 13 years…a big big mess of materials all over 3 huge tables (there actually are systems)..full of diverse and eclectic materials from all over the world where I have traveled. My Jewellery collections have been ‘one off pieces’ for 11 years of my career so its has been a collage scenario where I listen to music and just piece things together accordingly. The archive of these collections is not currently on my site but will be coming soon. My latest collection ALGND is a diffusion collection and is a more accessible price point than the one off unique pieces.

If you weren’t in the jewelry business, what would you have chosen for your career? A musician. I actually have been writing music for 15 years. I put out an EP last year called ‘piano piano’ and have been donating money to an orphanage in Lovina with the sales of this CD. I would like to play music as my career. OR a yoga teacher. What do you like about running your business from the amazing Bali ? I love doing Yoga in Bali. I make my best work when I am healthy and clear. I love Zula and the health food stores where I eat super healthy and get super strong. I love to drink COCONUTS! What’s your favorite part about our island? I love the interior design in Bali indoor/ outdoor living, the ease to create what ever you want to create from a house to Jewellery to fashion, I love the butterflies, the frangipani trees, the abundant bougainvillea, the Indonesian attitude and love for children, the incense and offerings, the ceremonies. Was there one moment when you felt like you’d “made it”? Or maybe an, “I’m so glad I did this!” moment? When I arrived alone on a double decker red bus at Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge on my own and the bus stopped at the gorgeous & always elaborate window display to see my jewellery all over the mannequins. I went down stairs into the international Menswear section to see on the wall the list of designers ..Seane Leane,Dolce Gabbana, KT jewellery, Vivienne Westwood, Ugo Cacciatori. It was rather exciting. What’s your absolute favorite part about being your own boss? I don’t have to EVER set the alarm. Last One! Tell us something about yourself you never said yet! I love to play the piano and drink red wine & I love to walk through the country side singing at the top of my lungs.

However, there are times when we often spend it on things that are not suitable for us. It is such a waste of money when we actually spend so much on clothes and cosmetics that dont fit or worse that make us look bad. How would it feel like to have someone going shopping with us or someone there telling us all about the latest fad in fashion today? Is it more fun to have someone helping on how to wear those clothes? Well, all these could be made possible with the help of a fashion stylist! One does not
need to be a celebrity to have their own stylist. In the world today, it is but normal to have one’s very own fashion stylist. For most of us who are fashion conscious and do have the eagerness to look their best everyday then a fashion stylist is the answer to our need. A fashion stylist could be someone who would show the ins and outs of becoming a trendy fashionista. They would be able to help in shopping for clothes that are suitable for ones age, shape of body, skin color and likes. Every season, trend in fashion changes, which is why if we want

our wardrobe to compliment, then for sure rendering the service of a fashion stylist can be a very good advantage. He/She will be able to tune our wardrobe on various occasions. The right clothes and accessories for our personality will be chosen all perfectly for us. One would certainly notice someone who has their own fashion stylist because they would stand out in the crowd. They have more confidence and they look highly fashionable. All these could be done without having to spend for those designer label clothes. A fashion stylist would know where to get clothes that look really expensive and yet are inexpensive!

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR...
BACK BY VERONICA
Your back is the core of your body, the one that keeps your feet on the ground throughout your life. But did you ever have neck or back pain? Back pain is one of the most common pathologies rising to become one of the main causes of medical leave. Did you know that 85% of back pains can be prevented with good posture correction practices? Here are some tips and good habits that will help to prevent, just take it into account in your daily actions and keep in mind a number of recommendations. Overall avoid those positions that tend to bend back, to sink it or twist it. All positions should be adopted with the torso stand upright. The mere action of observing this anatomical rule of remaining upright, is a form of corrective gymnastics that can ease or prevent many back pains. Nor it is advisable to keep too long followed the same posture, it is better to change position from time to time. Use the right shoes. Not too flat or with very high heel, to walk comfortable and so you can walk upright naturally. In the office : The ideal is to have a firm seat with the backrest, and your legs at an angle of 90 degrees touching the floor. Keep your back straight when sitting, against the back of the chair avoiding positions as laying on the table or sitting on the edge of the chair. If you sit for long periods, every two hours do a little stretching and stand up. Just a couple of minutes to make extensions to the sides, back and forth, rotating your head in circles, hands up like you’re swimming and extend them as high as possible. Up and down the shoulders, make circles and move them back and forth. Place your computer to the proper height, screen must be in the same plane as your eyes. If not, use a base to raise it. If you bend down: Another point to keep in mind to avoid back pain is to get into the habit of stooping, bending your knees to perform any tasks that you performed before curving your back to pick up an object from the floor, lift a load, etc. The back should always be straight or vertical, not lean or bend the spine. Lifting heavy weights: If you take any object, grab it with both hands and lift it slowly. If you move an object that is heavy, bring it close to your body and waist. Distribute the weight if you’re loaded. It is best to carry a purse or backpack crossed, loading on both sides of the back. When shopping, always distribute the load in two bags.

At bedtime: It is important to sleep on a firm mattress where you don’t sink. The pillow should be as flat as possible. The head should not be neither too flexed nor too extended. The proper posture during sleep is on your back or side in a fetal position. Face down when sleeping is the worst position for your back, since it forces your neck. If you are long standing : Turna on your feet changing it from side to side. It helps if you put the foot you’re resting on a step ladder or any height. Take small steps to not stay static and bend your knees slightly. If you’re tired, take each heel to the buttocks to prevent foot and leg pain . Sports: It is essential to know how to choose the best sports for your back. Among these may be cited as the best swimming, as it is a very complete exercise for the back non aggressive if practiced correctly. If swimming is not your thing, you can try Pilates. Besides being great as a very full postural corrector, it helps not only your back but also your ability to concentrate. Especially recommended to avoid hernias is stretching activities like yoga, that helps to keep an elastic spine. On the contrary, there are some sports especially contraindicated for back pain, such as water skiing, golf and horseback riding , specially for the lower back. Emotions and your back Over the back or spine, we also carry all the problems that we don’t want to see or show to others. It is wise to learn how naturally take care of your physical and mental blockages that can affect your life. According to Psychologist Louise Hay, there is a correspondence between the points of physical pain and our emotional ailments. - Neck pain = Communication Problems. The top of the back, is related to communication, our openness and flexibility towards life and those around us. It would improve if you are less rigid on your thoughts and express what you feel. - Dorsal Pain = Excess Liability. The center area of the back is the emotional realm of guilt and stagnation in the past. It is also the weakness of those who feel
their life is a burden, wanting to control everything and assume responsibilities that don’t belong to them. - Low Back pain = insecurity and fear. The lower back pain (lumbar, sacrum and coccyx) reflex the existence of material and emotional insecurities. The coccyx is linked to the first chakra, the seat of primal instincts as nutrition, sexuality or protection. The strong negative emotions cause as much pain as the worst physical injuries. According to oriental shiatsu technique, which considers that emotions are energy in motion, energy can flow or stop causing a painful physical and emotional jam. Hernia, the silent pain A vertebra is any of the bones in the line of the spine. Between the front and back of the vertebrae there is a conduit, the spinal canal, where the spinal cord is placed. Each vertebra is separated from one another by means of an intervertebral disc. These discs are loose and pulpy connective tissue whose function is to cushion during spinal movements. The intervertebral disc tissue has high water content that tends to decrease with age or accidents, decreasing the spine elasticity. Degenerative changes in the disc lead to a loss of strength and the disc can be displace or even break. This is known as a herniated disc. Herniated discs are more frequent in the cervical and lumbar spine and may cause pain in back and legs. As general life good habits, it is recommended a balanced diet rich in quality foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and antioxidant nutrients that help the body regenerate tissues. Drink plenty of water throughout the day ( 2 liters ) is also essential for the body to maintain its humidity levels. Food preventive and helpful treating herniated discs are marine algae, brewer’s yeast, berries and citrus. Also garlic, whole grains, vegetable milks and oils, fish and legumes. Avoid refined sugars and flours, fried food, processed meats and junk foods that have no nutritional value. Overweight should be avoid since it accelerates deterioration of the spine intervertebral discs.
– 23 –
Even Herniated discs are treated primarily with rest, analgesics and anti -inflammatories, combining treatment with proper diet can be very positive. Physiotherapy is also key to recovery of disc conditions. The therapist will tell you the most effective exercises to care for your spine and recover. Natural Therapies These are some of the natural methods that can bring benefits - physical and emotional - to your back: 1. Pilates Method: postural reeducation. This technique already mentioned, was created by German Joseph Pilates to reinforce the body trunk and improve balance. Those who regularly practice, say that they have forever changed their posture and their attitude towards life. 2. Chiropractic: flexible spine. It states that a misalignment of the spine affects our entire functionality. Using precise manipulations, it restores flexibility to joints and the structures involved. It is effective against headaches, low back pain, sciatica, cramps, sprains or stiffness. 3. Cranial osteopathy and craniosacral: energy in the core. Two osteopathic specialities that, through subtle pressures, favor the flow of cerebrospinal fluid around the spinal cord and brain . Its aim is to decompress the skull bones due to tension that causes physical, mental and emotional discomfort. 4. Kinesiology : muscles movement. It has a global vision of our nervous system and muscle reaction to physical, chemical and mental stimuli. The idea is to rebalance the vital energy, optimize body posture and improve movement patterns releasing physical pain. You can try also a Natural home treatment to help relieve the discomfort of the hernia. Ingredients : Mineral water, clay , cabbage and a dash of vinegar. Mix enough clay in water to create a consistent mass. Add a splash of vinegar and apply to the painful area covering with the cabbage leaves. Leave there as long as you can. But always In case of injury, visit a specialist who will tell you what to do and will make the proposer recommendations for each case.

KARMA KONVERSATIONS 5 WAYS TO HANDLE THE 12 WORST PARTS OF ANY RELATIONSHIP BY SWATHIMAA Here we are, in the throws of giving thanks, eyes on the horizon gazing towards a season of good cheer and a brighter new year. For believers and non-believers alike, not just optimists or the Americans, counting our blessings is, for the moment, a wonderful, universal pastime. At its heart: the desire to bask in the sweetness of our connection with those closest to us. If our joy radiates across the entire world, hey, the more the merrier! The topic of our jolly little gathering this month is relationships. Let’s unwrap them and see what’s inside. I’ll go first. Life as we know is all about relationships. We’re constantly in them. Not a moment passes without
us being connected in some way with our environment, with each other, the Divine, and with our Self. Life, even in its most quiet moments, is a constant dialogue. If you could put a face to every voice in your head, underneath the masks, they’d all just be you. The memory impressions from every experience you’ve ever had vie for your attention, want reinforcement, seek dominance, and even sovereignty over the wide-eyed, trusting, lovable inner child you’re sure you started out as and still want to believe exists. Every relationship starts when the inspiration comes to breech the frontiers of your soul with the intention to connect. It sounds proactive but, in truth, it’s receptive. It’s about being open. Openness is
– 24 –
– SPIRITUALITY –
like a magnet soliciting a response. And, we reciprocate by putting our stuff out there. Relationships are often likened to games, even war, with competing gambits, strategies, calamities, conflicts, inevitable gains, and losses. If it all starts out with openness and a soulful desire to connect, why all the residual bloodspilling and score card tallies? Because somewhere along the way, we’ve decided that putting all our stuff on the table is primarily about one thing: what’s in it for us. And, by “us”, we mean “me”. With the aid of our memories, internal dialogues, and the external diatribes, commentaries, and interpretations we’ve each been privy to, accepted, and assimilated as our own, we’ve come to agree that relationships are contractual, following the universal edicts of the ‘Versus Contract’: good versus bad, profit versus loss, us versus them, male versus female, up versus down, happy versus sad, God versus the devil. This last one being part of a twopart cosmic disclaimer, which states: 1. This is the way it is 2. You’ve got to pick a side But, for our part, we’re prone to negotiate. With or without consciously thinking about it, we tend to live and relate as if there’s a third part to that Disclaimer, specifically: 3. Marginal leeway should be allowed with regards to personal preference Meaning, we should be able to switch sides, with impunity, depending on the circumstances — after all, we’re only human.
This is where the ‘Good versus Evil’ clause comes into play. Spiritually speaking, ‘Good versus Evil’ is about selflessness (giving) versus selfishness (getting). We want to negotiate and renegotiate because, with all these ‘this versus that’, we find it really hard to be selfless. In truth (and practical application), we want what we want, when we want it, the way we want it, AND we want it now. If we don’t get it, certainly it must mean something’s wrong with the deal. Yet, everything comes with a price. That’s the deal — and the true meaning of karma: we come together to settle our personal, karmic debts. Here’s where the cosmic conundrum comes into play: two people coming together with the primary intent of getting something for themselves means it’s inevitable that what they’ll both get is more into debt. Any way you slice it, debt is a burdensome weight. Anyone with more than one credit card knows, in addition to the principal, the interest can be staggering. That’s what happens with relationships: when we want what we want and make relationships the forum for getting it, we automatically create more karmic debt and increase the negative side effects, often exponentially. Here are the most common, the 12 worst parts of any relationship: • • • • • • • • • • • •
Anticipation Betrayal Compromise Denial Disagreement Disappointment Fear Heartbreak Reevaluation Rejection Sacrifice Surrender
– 25 –
Some of these — the first and last, for example — may sound like good things. In some ways, they are. Anticipating an intimate moment, surrendering to love or ecstasy, these are a kind of bliss. But, 9-out-of-10 times, what we anticipate in relationships is what may go wrong. Despite great hair, the perfect outfit, and our best-laid plans, we worry something will go wrong. Anticipation implies unpredictability. And, not knowing inspires fear. There you stand, beaming, a sensual magnet nurturing, while radiating fear. No amount of make up hides that. Mustering the emotional control it takes a bigger strain than we realize — all in the name of emotional consumerism. Ugh! But, let’s not dwell on the lumps of coal. Here are 5 ways to turn relationships into diamonds: 1. Give “Me” a break 2. Trust Positively 3. Forgive Every Debt 4. Speak Only the Sweet Truth 5. Practice Your Better-Best Let someone else, not your selfishness, be the judge. Don’t mind your relationship, mind your own integrity; if what you both place on the table is your truth, your light, your peace, and your love, the relationship will honestly take care of itself. The less you owe, the more gifts you can give; and, the more you’ll receive in return. Kindness is never brutal; it’s nectar, so share. Your “best” is divine. Test this with every breath; strive to know who you truly are. The incredible magnet you become will attract the sweetest things. And, the interest accrued will automatically be transferred into your soul account. That’s the deal. Enjoy the holidays! swathimaa@omshivaloka.com
– INTERVIEW / PHOTOGRAPHER –
STEPHAN KOTAS Stephan, can you tell us a bit more about you? Where do you come from? Where do you live? Where do you call home? Hai, I am from Prague, Czech Republic, but been living in Indonesia for 10 years. I lived in Bali, then Jakarta and now back in Bali. Also traveling extensively around Indonesia and elsewhere. Right now I am having a project on Bangka Island so going there quite often…
What led you to a career in fashion photography? Do you have formal training in your background? I‘ve learned photography by myself, mostly from internet and by practicing. First I did landscape and travel photography, then after getting involved in modeling and entertainment business I started shooting fashion too about 3 yrs ago… Could you name some of the photographers that have inspired you and helped to shape your approach to fashion photography? There would be so many, but I don’t really memorize names. I love to look at other people’s work n get inspired by it. With internet its so easy. I collect interesting images which I later use for reference.
– 26 –
– INTERVIEW / MEDIA –
What would we find in your camera bag for a typical assignment in studio or in location? I shoot with Nikon D800, and several lenses, prefer wide to middle zooms, but it all depends on conditions of each shoot. What style do you mainly shoot? Apart from fashion I do Art Nude and Landscape photography. I prefer outdoor locations and available light. On today’s shoot for FAUVE magazine I’ve been playing with UV light. Its something I had on mind for long time and I am happy I could finally realize it. It’s another part of what I like, having fun with new things and experimenting.
As you look through the viewfinder what is the most critical moment in the capture of your image? For me the most critical part of any photoshoot is preproduction. I think good fashion photographer should be a good art director at the first place. I like preparing concepts and putting the whole puzzle together: location, styling, model selection, make up, mood, etc…
What has been the best advice given to you by another photographer? That a picture is more valuable than a camera so don’t be afraid to destroy it. But he was working for National Geographic. Always gets new gear shipped if he wrecks it in the jungle or somewhere. Luckily I’ve never destroyed anything, although my camera gets washed by waves or covered in mud sometimes.
If not fashion photography, what would Stephan is doing with his time? I still sometimes work as a model and TV presenter. Since last year I’m in property business as investor and consultant. I like to switch between those different fields. Apart from photography my hobbies are surfing and outdoor sports in general, traveling and art.
Who is your bigger inspiration? Women and nature are endless sources of inspiration. I love exploring those two subjects in my outdoor art nude series.

IMAGINATION INSPIRES SOCIAL CHANGE BY KATYA Imaginations shared create collaboration, collaboration creates community, and community inspires social change. - Terry Tempest Williams NGO’s ( Non-governmental organizations ) are said to have first appeared in the middle of the 19th century, but were officially called NGOs after the Second World War ended and the United Nations were created. The general idea of a non-governmental organization is to be a non-state, nonprofit and a voluntary entity, independent from government influence and working to promote social, economical or political change in the communities or on a larger scale, of a country or even worldwide. In the whole scheme of working towards a global change for the better of humanity, a particularly important role is played by the

organizations dedicating their time and effort towards the needs and education of the youth. The Youth is the future of the planet, the driving force of our global community and will bear a heavy burden on their shoulders due to the mismanagement of Earth by recent generations. The daughter of the first Indonesian President, Bung Soekarno, founded the Kartika Soekarno foundation in 1998. KSF then raised funds for the ‘Preventing a Lost Generation’ campaign, designed to keep young children in school during the severe economic crisis in South East Asia. The foundation raises funds for educational and health concerns in Indonesia. The KFS Posyandu projects in Java, Bali and Sumatra provides child care and educational work for parents on the basics of healthy nutrition, medical care and creating a positive psychological environment for their children.

Academy Award acclaimed actor, Jeremy Irons - who has been a messenger for the awareness of global pollution - was recently introduced to Kartika Soekarno in Florence, at the Italian Premiere of Mr. Irons’ documentary “Trashed” (www.trashedfilm.com), which covers the sad state of affairs our species is now confronted with and is very much responsible for. Before this film, the actor also participated in a “Mocumentary” titled the “Magnificent Plastic Bag” - a witty yet informative satire, which focuses on the ‘life’ of a plastic bag in its natural surroundings. This ‘short’ film can be found on Youtube. Kartika then invited Jeremy to Jakarta, as both formally agreed to screen his new documentary at the ERASMUSINDOCS film festival. There are a few scenes of the Ciliwung River located in Jakarta, which highlight the dismal state of rubbish and its
impact on the local environment, which has very little resources in maintaining an acceptable standard. The screening is organized in cooperation with the Kartika Soekarno Foundation which took place at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in November 2013. Recently, together with his wife Sinéad Cusack - an Irish Actress, who is also a patron of the Burma Campaign UK – Jeremy, visited one of KSF’s projects in Bali. After taking a tour and becoming familiar with the site’s activities and getting acquainted with the kids on a personal level, Jeremy mentioned the importance of implementing an educational foundation and its part in solving a global pollution problem. When asked, if he is going to do any research on the trash situation in Bali, he replied: “I am aware of the scale of the problem here,

I have seen the rivers and lots of plastic trash everywhere. But I am not an activist. At the end of the day, I am an actor, a messenger. It is in my power to get the information across and then trust the next step of solving the problem to people, who are the specialists in this field” And if a messenger, an activist, a humanitarian, a teacher, a volunteer and all the other inspired individuals come together, if each do their part on the path to create change – all of this, might actually work. “You have forgotten who you are and so have forgotten me. BARBACOA BY KATIE TRUMAN Petitenget’s dwindling rice fields have yet again nurtured another fab new restaurant-bar, Barbacoa, but this time with a rare South American flavour Those who’ve read my previous reviews will think I sound like a broken old record, with constant amazement at the dizzy standards of venues sprouting -up in Bali, but especially the “Bermuda Triangle” of culinary hotspots that is SeminyakPetitenget. So here I go again: jaw on the floor as I enter a timbered “temple-like” restaurant-bar opposite Sardine amidst Petitenget’s rice field territory. Barbacoa may have been open a few weeks but its vast open-plan dining floor is heaving with diners (dinner only). Secret ingredients here is the culinary concept, self-

proclaimed “Latin American fusion restaurant with focus on sharing” but much more: Argentinean, Uruguayan, Mexican and Peruvian cuisine – that’s unusual enough for Bali – but even more unique, with a modernized, westernized tweak and some subtle Japanese influences. Among a small handful of executive partners and chefs, the main creative force is Australian Adam Dundas-Taylor, ex-Chef from highly acclaimed, celebrity packed, Michelin-starred Nobu Restaurant in London. No surprise then, that cuisine is excellent and an impressive clan of off-duty chefs dine here and catch-up with friends. You’ll find Adam most nights darting between guests and the kitchen. He also co-designed the striking interiors of a building built from scratch, which predominately features glass

frontage and sustainable woods and highlighted with towering wood ceiling and individually-painted bare brick walls, pretty South Americanstyle floor tiles and customized seating. The massive wood front door entrance pays homage to the distinctive shape of a vintage Tequila bottle. There’s an outdoor terrace (good for groups), but the main action seems to be within, with an infectious yet refined South American ambiance and appropriate sounds. “Barbacoa” means barbecue, so of course, a signature is South American-style “Asado” dishes from a stand-up griller contraption and sizzling ovens, standing openstyle next to the open kitchen area, which sizzling cooking methods produce insanely tender meats like pork, octopus and lamb – served chopped on wooden platters. Other notable dishes on the evolving menu include charcoal grilled octopus with
crispy polenta or Australian aged rib-eye beef (the latter also good for Asado), roll-your-own battered fish taco with coleslaw and mango, and grilled spicy chorizo (surprisingly locally-made) with red pepper jam and coriander. My favourite dish has to be Peruvian-style snapper cerviche, fresh and citrus tangy with Aji Amarillo dressing, plus the fried cauliflower with cumin and chick peas, as I’m forever vegetable starved in Bali. There’s an impressive tally of authentic Tequila bottles and brands at the square-shaped open bar, always buzzing with diners pre or post- dinner. Senor Adam assures me that their Margaritas (including chocolate and jalapeño varieties) are the best in Bali and after three frozen margaritas, he’s damn right. Still to come, a smoking house at the back, (that’s meats, not Marlborough’s) and on the developing Mezzanine level, a lounge area for drinks with plush Chesterfields extending to an outdoor terrace Tequila Bar, which overlooks the next surprise, a vast expanse of working rice fields. – INTERVIEW / MODEL –
KIRSTEEN MODEL OF THE MONTH
BY KATIE STONE
What was your first big break in the industry? My first big break I would say it was when I was 19 and walking the CK underwear show. Dispite my shorter height as a model, they still decided to book me which came as such a surprise, and what made me even more greatful is that they continue to book me till this day. They’ve watched me grow from an adolecent to a woman, I appriciate them dearly.
Where are you from? How did you start modeling? I am born in Hong Kong. My mother is Chinese, and my father is Scottish. I started my modelling career when I was 18 after being offered to be represented by several agencies in HK. I must admit I was pretty reluctunt to do it at first but after a fair bit of encouragement from my family and friends I decided to have a taste of modelling and here I am now 6 years later, loving every minute of my job.
What has been your favorite job so far? My favourite job so far… that’s a tough one as all the jobs I do, I love no matter how good or bad the shoot or show was, because from each job I gain more experience and mature so much from it. I work and I learn. Though, of course the most enjoyable job for me was walking for Le Perla show in HK, it is a fantastic feeling getting in sexy lingerie and strutting down a runway with people cheering you on.
– 48 –
What is your dream-modeling job? My dream modelling job is of course like every other models dream job, to walk the Victoria’s Secret show and be one of the angels. However, I am so grateful and happy with all the work that I have done so far in my carreer that they all turned out to be a dream. I may sound a bit airy fairy, but this is true. How do you deal with all the travelling required to be a model? How do you cure jet lag? I absolutely love the travelling that comes with the job, it is one of my favourite parts of being a model. Jet lag never is an issue for me as I always manage to sleep so easily, however if I ever do have a problem with my sleeping I do a crazy work out in the day and tire myself out so I sleep like a baby at night.
– INTERVIEW / MODEL –
When you’re not doing modeling, what are some of your favorite things to do? When I am not modelling I read books, lots and lots of books. I do some yoga at home and really just do the most relaxing things imaginable, though on occational nights, I love a good night out with my friends. If you weren’t a model, what would you want to do? I love to paint and write in my spare time, so I believe if I weren’t a model I would still be working in the creative field. The creative gene runs very deep in my family. What is your favorite snack? I actually don’t snack so much, however if I am hungry I absolutely love to gulp down a healthy smoothie or a yummy green juice (any kind of vegetable juice, add a bit of green apple and it makes the
juice just delicious), perferably cold pressed as it keeps more essential vitamins and enzymes in them. Where is your favorite place to travel? My favourite place to travel I must say Thailand. Anywhere in Thailand is just amazing in my experience. I have always had the best of times there no matter who I am with or what I am doing. I love the food, the people, the beaches the whole lot! What is your all time favorite movie and why? My all time favourite movie used to be Closer, with its sharp writing, great dialogue, and some fantastic performances. However I after I saw the new version of The Great Gatsby, I fell in love. Not only because I love Leo Dicaprio but because it is a tare movie, each time I watch it I see something new. And it captures the spirit of F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel so well.
– 49 –
What’s next coming for Kirsteen? I am so focused on my modelling at this moment it is all about modelling, however I am planning to run for Miss Hong Kong 2014 and I hope to gain a great deal of life expeirience from it. I have been putting it off for so many years until I came across an inspiring quote which went something like this... “When you are older, you will most likely regret those things you did not do, rather than those things you did” 5 words that describe yourself? Creative, Ambitious, Inquisitive, Passionate, Mercurial

UNVEILING MEN’S FASHION BY VICTORIA Adam’s genetics have their own choices, preference, and styles. Not only are they discreet, but are also experimental. What does the fashion trends for 2013 have in store for them? Men are getting equally fashion conscious like their female counterparts. With exclusively styled designer outfits, and patterns to go with the latest trends, men are having a wonderful fashion journey. Menswear apparel market is going through a phenomenal growth. Fashion gets transformed into personality expression, and the experimental nature of the youth fuels market for the same. Menswear is a bit complicated as there is nothing much that can be created above the basic t- shirts, trousers, and denims. Still designers put in their creativity to come with novel ideas such as fabric innovations, washes, yarn blends and presentations. Fashion trends for men for 2013 look easy and modern. Fashion cycles keep repeating, but men’s wardrobe for the season is filled with innovative styles. The Color Palette: Hues both bright and pastel will rule the segment with the bright tones on colored suits, and pastel shades for designer pieces. Metallic shades will add a flash of inspiration. Shiny mohair suits and wintry colors such as granite and plum will be in fad. Bearing a resemblance to the Venusians the coming year’s color palette will be assertive of vibrant shades adding dark and depth to subtle retro elegance of soft hues. Color choices of both the extremes would dominate the collections of fashion designers, and the general public. There would also be a feminine touch with floral prints, and embroidery. Burgundy or oxblood
red, and autumnal berry shades will add depth to summer dressings. The Fabric: Innovative fabrics will be in trend with technical finishes adding shine and luster to the garments. Sheen shimmering fabrics will be in trend for men too. Menswear will display varying personalities ranging from illuminating metallic fabrics to subtle evening luster. Double breast suits will replace single breast suits. Military type coats, and outfits with gold braid, and buttons will be the trend. Menswear trend goes to display a vivacious personality with garments reflecting a blend of silver metal and midnight sky. The Pattern: Color Blocks: Color blocking involves tailoring garments with two or more fabrics of complementing shades together in a creative way, appealing to the eyes. Color blocked apparels are always the favorite of the masses. This year, the whole apparel will be color blocked. Brands such as Prada, and Moschino have created menswear in bright bold colors which would appeal even to the conservative fashionistas. Bold Stripes: Runways of London, Paris, and Milan will be filled with different types of stripes for the coming year. Contrasting variations of color and style would be seen in the collections. Dolce & Gabbana, Emporio Armani, and Salvatore Ferragamo have come with different angles of pin stripes. Stripes had been in fashion before, but this year’s trend for stripes would go further from the shirts and t-shirts to trousers and pajamas’ as well. Masculine Florals: Floral prints make their way from women’s wardrobe
– 56 –
to the menswear segment making a new trend. Playful patterns such as faded florals, symmetrical flowers, and submerged prints will be seen on shirts, blazers, and t-shirts. Floral prints will be seen not only in a brighter note, but even on dull greys, rust, black and pale oranges. They can be seen in the collections of Gucci, Calvin Klein, and Balenciaga. Short Pants: Suitable for summer clothing, short pants are seen much on the runways. Famous names such as Emporio Armani, and Dolce & Gabbana emerge in catwalks with this style. Much in resemblance to a formal pant cropped till the knee, this style of clothing goes well when combined with shirts, blazers, and t-shirts. Paired with the right choice of clothing and in appropriate colors, short pants will make a new extension of the nautical trend. Many brands have a strong foothold in the menswear segment, with more brands making a beeline. While new trend keep popping every now and then, it is the time that will decide the power of the style. Overall menswear fashion is all set, and will see more evolutions in the near future as well.

HEART KINGDOM “SHINE ON” METALLIC TREND. BY ASTRID
We dare to state that hardly anyone is looking forward to the fall and winter seasons, while warm days are around and you start making plans and dreams for an ideal vacation on the beach. Yet, there is something nice and exciting for the new fall-winter 2013-2014 season: it will bring us new fashion trends and will resurrect the old forgotten ones, which always come as a breath of fresh air. One of them is glitter of metal that has come back after disappearing in a long time. Besides metallic colors and fabrics, leather, the fall-winter 2013-2014 fashion trends also bring metallic luster of white color, saturated colors or holographic overflow. Fabric with a pattern made of metallized yarn is in vogue.
Designers also used metal materials in the collection of accessories. There are so many options of original metal accessories: bags, belts and shoes made of materials coated with metallic of different colors. See below my top 10 favourite picks from this trend:
Whether you prefer to dip a toe or dive right in, this Spring 13/14 take on the metallic trend is as easily tested as accessories or even full looks. Ok, Now… How to wear them?! Calm down, tiger… I wouldn’t let you look like a space ranger in public! So, let me guide you a little bit on how to make you look ab-solute-ly FAB in this metallic trend. :) (BALMAIN, BADGLEY MISCHKA) Space age-inspired separates and playful candy-wrapper foil frocks prompt serious reflection, where a 1990s era club kid take on the trend had mirror-shine stripes and sequins split into stripes and curved lines on crop tops, drop-waist dresses and jackets.

– STYLE –
The key to make your metallics more day friendly is mixing textures and combining them with more casual items. For example: a simple plain top or plain shoes. If you choose to wear a metallic top you can pair it with your favourite high-waisted denim shorts or jeans, but added more metallic details in the form of chunky jewelry, mirrored nail polish and a vibrant colored bag.
I still love the idea of the classic metallic color. It’s something that’ll always be stylish & could easily be paired with jeans or trousers during the day. Your metallic shoes go with a lot of outfits & definitely crave attention. This is what I have at home – it’s from Forever 21. Love it!
“Whatever your interpretation of the trend is, make sure to do it subtly.” Love, Astrid. Instagram: @astridsoedjono

– INTERVIEW / DESIGNER –
LUIZA CHANG LULU YASMINE
What is that makes fashion GREAT fashion? What is that X-factor quality that lifted a garment or a collection to a higher level?
When did you first realize that you were going to pursue fashion? And what is your number one passion besides fashion? I first realized this when I was only a little girl, surrounded by my chinese grandmothers extravagant vintage clothes. I would spend hours trying combinations of clothes and experimenting with fashion. What I love the most besides fashion is travel.
To me great fashion, is a quality, In the design as well as in the creation. I find that this X-Factor quality that places a garment or collection above the rest, are the characteristics that portray the designers inspirations.
Continuously inspired, passionate and eager to discover. Last one! Tell us something about yourself that nobody knows, yet! I have a large Maneki Neko Collection.
I use the same textiles that I normally use, these include organic silks and crepe. The prints I use are all digital and hand-made screening inspired by the designs I found upon my travels in Rajhastan and Marakech.
www.luluyasmine.com
How do you discover your textiles? Do you travel and the remote parts of Indonesia in search of that certain fabric?
These two places, are where I feel at home outside Bali. Entering the fashion world new and fresh, in these two places in particular were overwhelming at first. Their rich history and cosmopolitan culture pushes me to constantly refine my tastes and evolve with the world.
Most of my textiles are not limited only to Indonesia. I search anywhere in the globe to find the best textiles that fit my current collection, may it be Italy, India or Chine etc…
My Signature is creating clothes that are always inspired by my travels. I am known to melange European style with an Asian touch.
How do you see yourself in 10 years?
Can you describe the work involved in utilizing textiles and print for your new collection that is themed Morocco?
You spent a lot of time in Paris, Brazil… What was that experience like, as you entered into the fashion world new and fresh?
What is your Signature? What are you most known for?
way people design. And thus the history of a place is the underlying background that creates the fundamental mindset of a community and their perspective of the ultimate design.
How does “where the place came from” influence the ultimate design of what he fabric gets made into? As the history through time develops the unique culture of every individual place. Every unique influences in art, be it from the art of expression, science or religion change the

FASHION HOROSCOPE ARIES
This is one month where you definitely don’t want to make a rod for your own back, with the easier you can make things for yourself the better. A busy week with plenty of work/life balance challenges calls for a low maintenance approach to fashion choices, but it’s less about being organised ahead of time and more about choosing not to create fashion emergencies where there are none.
TAURUS
You have reached one of the most important days of the year for communication on the relationship front, whether within your personal or professional relationships, especially when you’re going back to something you’ve either tried to get through in the past or needs another layer or depth of sharing. Where you may have been skirting around issues or you’ve been taking small steps, it’s now time to do whatever it takes to ensure the communication lines are open.
GEMINI
After the Sun’s departure from your work sector last week and with Mercury leaving next week, where before you had plenty of time to get some powerful forces on the work front up to speed, things are now becoming a lot more urgent. Today you have a chance to really concentrate and focus on the big matters, choices or decisions you’re facing, with Mercury’s intellectual savvy and Saturn’s focus and determination coming together.
CANCER
While Mercury will join the Sun in your work sector next week, giving you the intellectual savvy required to work smarter and to bring your working year home, he’s holding out in a playful part of your chart for as long as he can. December is destined to be your busiest month of the year, not only on the work front but with life in general, with a chance now to find the right balance between work and play while you can.
LEO
Keep your finger on the pulse and your ear to the ground from the get go today, especially when it comes to trusting what a nose for money is telling you. It’s the Moon’s return to your income sector today, for his last visit before Mars leaves in just 12 days time and when things were already becoming more urgent, that allows you to narrow in on exactly where the money is, with a chance to pick your battles wisely, channelling your time and energy more effectively.
VIRGO
The timing of the Moon’s return to your sign today couldn’t be any better and not despite of the fact that this may create some personal and/ or relationship tension, but because it does. The Moon’s return to your sign each month will always push relationship buttons and evoke some strong emotional responses, but the difference today is that this comes on the very day that communication forces come together, allowing you to give those emotional responses a voice.
LIBRA
Over the course of the last 2 weeks Neptune and Chiron have both turned direct in your work sector, shifting the focus onto the future but are both not only still effectively stalled, but fighting the past’s suction, after being in retrograde motion for 5 months. A bit of pressure from the Moon today and the emotional responses this evokes might create some work tension, but it could be just what you need to get things moving.
SCORPIO
It was 4 days ago that the Sun left your sign and wrapped up your birthday month, but still the process of defining your objectives for the coming year continues and will do until Mercury leaves next week. It’s an alignment today between Mercury and Saturn that allows you to get your head around where you need to take a stand and what is required of you. This is less about what you want from the future and more about realising what the future needs from you and making a commitment.
– 72 –
SAGITTARIUS
This is a day where you need to have your finger on the pulse and your ear to the ground from the get go, especially when it comes to professional matters, with the Moon’s return to your career sector today triggering your professional instincts just when you need it most. This is the Moon’s last visit before Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos leaves next week and just as it’s time to start picking your battles wisely.
CAPRICORN
You have reached an extremely important day for both personal and professional networking, especially when it comes to communication and addressing some thorny issues or matters or things that you’ve had to come back to several times. While there may be some discord or pressure, see this as a good thing, for it’s forcing you to work harder to ensure everything is clearly understood, at the very time where the support is here for a communication breakthrough.
AQUARIUS
Chances are the Moon’s return to your financial sector today might be a mixed blessing, yet while on face value the financial tension that this creates isn’t a good deal, it puts you in a win/win situation. As the Moon’s last visit to your financial sector before Mars leaves, this is a chance to put your financial instincts, passions and fighting spirit on the same page, yet will also put pressure on income forces just when they and professional matters need a push start.
PISCES
With the Sun already in your career sector the wind down of your professional year has already begun and by this time next week this will require a lot more mental focus and tunnel vision, as you focus on bringing things home. Until then there is a need to keep your mind and your options open, using what you may see as a distraction to your advantage. For right now Mercury is evoking a sense of curiosity that is making it hard to focus, but rather than being a problem this is a chance to explore your options.

FIT & TIPS
TANK TOP ARMS
BY SUMMER Using the elastic is a fantastic way to stay in shape and sculpt the body. Resistance bands are a perfect addition to any strength training routine or rehabilitation program. Bands may be even more effective than a set of dumbbells because as it improves your
balance, with constant resistance you work in a full range of motion which targets muscles that you can miss with weights. For optimal results try using your elastic routine up to 3 times per week. For most exercises try aiming for 8-25 reps for 2-3 sets per exercise.
Sculpt shapely arms by placing the left foot forward and inside the elastic, while your right foot goes back behind you. Keep your knees soft, stomach tucked, and posture nice and tall. Roll your shoulders one time to set your posture correct. Next bend your elbows and raise your arms out to the side like a pitchfork or a half box shape. Remember it’s very important to focus on relaxing your neck and use only your arm and back muscles to complete the sets. Lift and lower the band evenly without pausing as you come up and down. Breathing steady. 2-3 sets of 15 alternating sides until finished. Roll shoulders to stretch.
The next arm pleasing exercise involves placing the elastic beneath your rear leg. Place your foot inside the elastic, keep your knees soft, stomach tucked and posture nice and tall. Roll your shoulders one time to set your posture correct. Next bend your elbows very slightly to protect the joint. Remember the importance to relax neck and shoulders and then raise your arms straight out in front of your body until shoulder height if possible. Continue lifting and lowing evenly without pausing as you come up and down. Breathing steady. 2-3 sets of 15 alternating sides. Roll shoulders to stretch.
Terrific triceps are in the making with this exercise. Start by sitting down on the floor and bringing your legs in front together, feet flexed. Place the elastic evenly around both feet and hold the elbows airtight at your sides. Your back and posture needs to upright and stomach engaged. Relax neck and shoulders, and then begin to use your ‘forearms only’ to push the elastic down and release up. Remember, keep the elbows airtight at your sides and use forearms only to push. Continue lifting and lowing evenly without pausing as you move up and down. Let those triceps burn! Breathing steady. 2-3 sets of 20. Stretch arms to recover.
