– EDITOR’S NOTE –
“To inspire and to be inspired” There are no words to describe how I felt when I woke up to the news that Nelson Mandela had passed away on December 5. He had been suffering for some time and we all knew that this day would come, but I wasn’t prepared that morning – I guess you can never really be prepared for death. And this time, our people have lost a father; a
father who brought our nation together. It’s going to take a long time for us to heal. Madiba was larger than life. We will never find another like him. His passing ends a historic era – one of the greatest – and we will always love him. What an extraordinary man he was, and a complete inspiration to us all. As our country mourns, we need to remember the good he did for us all. This month, It’s filled with stunning fashion, articles and beauty. As we come to the beginning of the new year, we also would like to thank our advertisers that always been here beside us. Thank you to all of you, our readers for supporting our magazine and also to my incredible team of contributors

JANE HITCHCOCK a magical smile
Jane Hitchcock’s remarkable career in modeling began at age14 when she was chosen as 1 of 2 girls from all over America for a scholarship to train at the school of Balanchine for the world’s premier ballet company, The New York City Ballet. She would make her first airplane trip to the wondrous city of New York from Alabama and her life would become more than she ever dreamed of.
With in weeks of arriving, photographers were stopping her in the street wanting to photograph her. She was then told she needed an agent and became the 5th model Wilhelmina, the famous Vogue model of the 60s took to begin her new agency. She was now Wilhelmina’s protégé and being schooled in the disciplines of a model. Her dance training made her a natural and gave her the posture, grace and understanding of movement and line, created when posing. She was able to bring her love of the performing arts to the camera which made her an ideal model for fashion photography. Immediately she was working with clients such as Elisabeth Arden, Max Factor, Clairol, Cover Girl, and with famous photographers such as Avedon, Hiro, Bert Stern and Helmut Newton. She regularly appeared in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle and Glamour. Stories about her unusual
– 10 –
success at such a young age were appearing around the world in Look Magazines and Life Magazines bringing her recognition as well as work in Europe and leading her at the unheard of age of 15 to do the French Collections for Vogue and Elle. Her career led from one success to the next, a book on modeling at 16, TV commercials, an acclaimed starring role in a film by Peter Bogdanovitch after which Columbia offered a contract and notably in the prestigious Cosmetic Industry where she was always in high demand. Jane was singled out as one of the faces to be used to by the cosmetic companies thru out her career and at every age. Her list of cosmetic clients also includes Estée Lauder,C linique,Maybelline,Yardley, Almay, Avon,Noxzema,Cover Girl,Boots Number 7, Orlane and Vichey among others.

At a point where models careers are traditionally considered a thing of the past, Jane reemerges doing Vogue Covers and signing cosmetic contracts with Maybelline for America and Vichey for Europe. Steven Meisel’s innovative thinking and recognition of the beauty in every age combined with the new awareness of a population whose demographics were beginning to tip the scales in the category of a woman 40 and upwards, brought a new revival. The advertising industry recognized this as the new emerging spending power and that it would continue to get ever increasingly bigger. Cosmetic companies now began to create lines featuring “ageless beauties” Women were no longer made to feel undesirable because they didn’t look like the 18 year old selling they’re favorite cosmetics and young women were applauding these women models, now given hope that when they reached that “certain age” that they wouldn’t be considered unattractive. They had new role models for a future and no longer had to be afraid.
So it was a win win situation for all and the start of a new era in thinking and role modeling for women. Steven Meisel had grown up with the models of the 60s and 70s watching their editorial and advertising campaigns coming out in the pages of Vogue every month. These images made an enduring impression and eventually led him to be a crusader to bring these girls back on the scene. He approached Vogue and inspired a new recognition of beauty in these girls who were now women in their 40s and 50s by photographing these famous models of the past such as Lauren Hutton, Lisa Taylor, Susan Forestall, Patty Hanson, Rosie Vella and of course Jane Hitchcock which he launched on the Covers of Vogue, on the inside pages for Calvin Klein, in a new campaign for Esprit and even including her daughter Serena with Jane in an international campaign for Ferretti Jeans. Calvin Klein then used these women in a runway show in which in which he is quoted on CNN in a documentary about Jane as saying “there is a changing perception.
– 11 –
These women are beautiful. Jane Hitchcock was in my show. I’m using her because she is perfect for what I’m trying to say. So women get better as they age. Another revival happened in Bali when Nico Perez used Jane in His campaign... and put a 10 meters billboard on Oberoi. Once Bali caught sight of Jane she was again in demand at almost 60...Niluh Djelantik used her for her shoe campaigns... I-Mag mixed her with the younger top models in Editorials. Paul Ropp did a series of ads... Frederico Joielli used her to launch his first collection and now Fauve is proud to have Jane on this January Issue. Agents started calling and she is back on the map...

Fashion experts predict purple reign this spring BY ANGELINA Orchid is growing on us: A version of the purple hue is Pantone Inc.’s colour of the year for 2014. It follows this year’s pick of emerald green. Officially known as Radiant Orchid, the tropical shade is a colour-wheel contrast to green, but it’s not the red that would have been a more obvious choice. It’s a little different, it’s a little off the beaten path, and it’s not a primary colour, It’s an invitation to innovation. The purple family offers (an) opportunity to do creative things. That’s what pop culture wants right now. People associate purple with creativity and originality and those are very valued today. We see words
like that being used to describe technologies and products that are seen as innovative and with an approach you haven’t tried before. Pantone sets colour standards for commercial use by design industries. It’s a flattering colour for many skin tones and complementary neutral colours, but it will also look like something people haven’t seen in a while. That should work in an economy that’s uncertain -- not totally up, not fully down. This is an opportunity to look at what you’ve already got in your closet and add to it. It will feel like the right amount of change. The runways and red carpet have already had a few orchid moments,
– 22 –
it’s a colour that first lady Michelle Obama often wears. Even menswear has seen hints of it, with Salvatore Ferragamo and Ermengildo Zegna incorporating it into ties and trims. Pantone’s pick for colour of the year will, in theory, have a strong presence in fashion, beauty, home design and consumer products. It’s very relevant for spring, even going into next fall it can be very pretty. In ready-to-wear, it mixes with other tones like chocolate browns, and burgundy or Bordeaux makes for a deeper, richer tonal story. It will translate just as well into lip colour and eye shadow, and in home furnishings.

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR...
Nails
by VERONICA Your hand nails are always visible; and if you live in Bali or any other tropical place, the ones on your toes are also daily exposed. Like your hands, they are your direct connection with the world around you, give information on how you are or what you do. Many people look at the hands when they first meet someone, I do! They can be very revelatory; it is one of the things to analyze when doing a palm reading. Their nature also tells about your personality and your character. I can recognize a gentleman at the first sight looking at the nails, and of course a neglected guy just pointing my eyes down to his feet…. But watch
out, sometimes decent hands can hide a pair of bear hoofs! What a horrible surprise, when you are with a very nice and charming prince, and you see the next morning his ogre nails sticking out of your clean bed sheets... They do not realize?? We don’t ask them to go for fancy pedicures (not varnish for man please…), but just take care and cut once in a while.
Dirty and cracked nails can be embarrassing and unsightly; skins around them can present irritations, inflammation, and even bacterial infections. If you want to keep nails healthy and young, you should pay them some attention. We can recommend you some simple daily care to have more beautiful nails, both for feet and hands.
Your nails, poor nails, have thousands of daily contact moments with the world. They are attacked by external agents such as soaps or chemicals, they scratch yourself whenever you feel like it (especially in rainy season after mosquito bites…), dig wherever you decide to, peel internet codes, lottery numbers, stickers and prices out of presents, bottles, and a long etc… Also, with the passage of time or lack of vitamins, hand nails tend to become thinner and drier. But the ones on your feet, they tend to become thicker and rebellious changing growing direction and shape….
General Tips
– 24 –
One of the main tips to follow is to wear gloves. This simple daily gesture every time you go to do some housework is already an important step to prevent the aggression of cleaning products on your nails. Never wash dishes without them, water and detergent damage nails and hands. If you have no choice and you had to wash dishes or be in contact with detergents without gloves, rinse your hands with a solution of water and vinegar -1 tablespoon vinegar, for every 2 of water. This will help you to restore the pH balance of the nails and skin.
– HEALTH –
As regular maintenance, you should do manicure and once a week and pedicure at least every two weeks. No need to polish your nails, but it is important to clean them, file them and remove excess skins. Yes, it is important to wash your hands regularly guys. Girls, better don’t receive affectionate gestures of a man that has not the good habit of washing hands frequently, especially in hot and humid weathers. When washing your hands, use mild soaps that respect the PH, the water should not be too hot and very important, dry your hands thoroughly and do not take too long, better not let nails to get to humid and soft. Do not forget to always have a creambased moisturizer or gel plant based like Calendula, that you apply every time after you wash or feel you’re the skin around your nails and hands is dry. A hand massage can be very relaxing and effective to stimulate the circulation of your nails. Put some cream around your nails massaging in circles your cuticles. When doing manicure or pedicure, it is better not to cut the cuticles since they protect the nails of any type of infection, better just remove the cuticle back. To clean underneath, use a soft brush. Try not to abuse of varnish (especially the fast drying one), it dries and weakens the nail. Before applying colour, use a good quality protective base that will nourish the nail and help last longer the nail polish. Never scrape nails to remove the rest of varnish, this action weakens and flakes your nail. Use nail polish remover in small amounts. The polish remover dehydrates and damages the root of your nails, if possible, look for one with aloe and vitamin E. Remember that using artificial nails damaged the surface of the nail weakening and ruining all care done before. It is good to give a break once a month to your nails and let those natural few days applying oils and creams to rehydrate. When filing, try to perform this operation from the ends toward the centre and not the other way. If you are prone to break easily, it is better that you shape them square.
We already know since we are kids, biting your nails is a not very good habit. It deforms your nails and even your fingers, it can cause infections in the cuticle area and no one find attractive hands with bitten nails. To fight this habit, first you must overcome shyness, stress and anxiety, common causes of this fixation. You can also try a cure of vitamins B1, B2 and D. The best moment to cut your nails is after shower, but if they are not too long is always better to file than cut. On your feet, make sure that your nails have the space to “breathe” and not remain wet for a long time. Fungi love warm, moist environments to grow. The sport shoes provides an ideal breeding ground for fungi that can affect nails growing , this shoe should be used only during exercise. Public showers are another place where fungi are common and are passed around different people ‘s feet . Low defences also predispose us to fungal infections in the nails, so that efforts to strengthen a healthy immune system will also help maintain healthy nails. Nails Speak about Health Some naturopathies pay attention to nails, finding symptoms of illness or lack of some nutrients in their patients. It is interesting to observe any change on their colour or shape as a first sign of health issue. Nails with black bands as “barcodes” can be caused by hormonal problems, pregnancy and treatment with antimalarial drugs. Nails with white spots, wrongly believed it is related to lack of calcium, it is sometimes associated with thyroid gland problems. Nails with yellow spots, are associated with high consumption of cigarettes (called “smokers stains”) but they are also found in patients who have been treated with antibiotics of tetracycline family. Nails curved and grey, are found in people with chronic heart or lung problems. Dry and brittle nails can be the result of a lack of vitamins A, B or E but also due to lack of iron or calcium. Concave nails, this can translate an iron deficiency, anaemia or chronic liver is problem.

Food for your nails Nails like hair are made of protein, and this is what they need to grow strong. Include in your diet some protein foods such as meat or fish, cheese , eggs, soybeans and other if you notice that they get flake or break too easily. Fatty acids are another key ingredient in the nutrition of the nails, found in eggs , nuts , vegetables, dairy and more. A balanced diet will help maintain strong and healthy nails growing . And clean and short nails (for you man), will help to give a good first impression in the opposite sex. Homemade Recipes When your hands are dry, rough, we must act immediately and provide extra hydration. To improve the strength of nails and cuticles, rub for ten minutes with a mixture of 50 ml of warm olive oil and a capsule of vitamin E. For fragile nails, leave them soaking in a mixture of mineral water and algae powder (rich in silicon). If they became a bit yellow, you can rub with white vinegar to whiten. Also you can soak them in 250 ml of hot water and a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide twice a week, for ten minutes. Once a week you can naturally exfoliate with sugar and lemon, or with a virgin oil and sugar. It removes dead cells improving your appearance and softness. Dip your hands in almond oil or rose hip for several minutes, help regenerate skin and nails. For severe cases of dryness on the nails and skin around, apply directly 3 drops of calendula oil on hands twice a day (preferably in the morning and at night) and massage nails and cuticles around them. Can end ups with a complete hand massage.

– SPIRITUALITY –
Men may be from Mars and women from Venus but the main differences between us aren’t planetary. It all comes down to Nature’s bottom line: men are physically stronger; and, women have wombs. With gender-specific self-justification, men have historically dominated human social interaction by using their physical strength, not reason or logic, to get what they want. And, we reacted in ways, which we found often mitigated this: we acquiesced pre-emptively; attempted to placate their hearts and their stomachs; and, distracted them by withholding something they wanted most from us (s-s-s-sex). In the end, it’s still all about them. The ramifications of having a womb aren’t just about our ability to propagate the species or look good in a dress because of all the other fine equipment that comes with it. In spiritual terms, we are all competent souls, which, from deep within and of our own nature, karmically manifest the bodies we inhabit, so we can work through the karmas we owe and are owed in this life. Yet, as earthly women, don’t we have that ability, too — to manifest a body or bodies from within us and of our own nature? Yes, dear hearts. Yes, we do. We’re living embodiments, not just expressions, of the soul. We are humanity’s true creative force. Our power is, literally, the power of creation. So, why are we, this world’s sublime Venusians, still subordinate to the whims of a little extra muscle from Mars? As modern women, we perceive ourselves as leading many forwardthinking social movements with virtually unlimited, self-empowering
possibilities. And, in recent years, as ‘civilized’ men have become more nurturing, we’ve grown more secure, enough to tell ourselves we’re entitled to speak our minds freely and actively pursue our own desires and dreams. Yet, this isn’t a worldview. Horrifying statistics on domestic violence everywhere bear this out. So many of our thoughts, words, and actions are still male-driven. We choose to do our best to play their game by their rules, still worried by the desire/need to get and keep a man. And, personally, I don’t see how promoting corporate greed in a pinstripe dress instead of a suiteand-tie, or showing side boob at the supermarket, indicate any real progress for the women’s movement, despite what people are tweeting. But, they do — because we still agree, if we’re really to advance, it will be under the guys’ terms. But, ladies, we’re better than this! Yet, the sad truth is, most women still don’t believe it. Thankfully, some do. Today, women are in the vanguard of a spiritual renaissance, too, not just a social transition. The reason spirituality is on the upswing now isn’t because we want to harken back to a mystical time or escape a harsh present reality through an angel-andfairy-filled dreamscape. It’s because, when the darkness dominates, it’s time to bring on the Light to remove it. Who better to do this, than us? At first glance, spiritual practices do seem difficult. They go against much of what our co-dependent consumer culture, the media, our friends, and even our families want
– 27 –
from us: outward attendance. As if that’s not a big enough hurdle, there’s also a lot of misinterpretation and misunderstanding regarding spirituality, its guidelines and practices. But, in a very practical sense, spiritual laws follow the laws of Relativity; every 100 years, the practices need to be updated to meet the needs of the times. The great sages of the past knew this and gave the precise revisions. Ironically, most people today practice outdated techniques because most teachers teach from books, not deep personal experience. Yet, there are teachers available with real knowledge. And so, all these difficulties can be easily overcome by having faith and patience through the learning curve. Spirituality’s sole purpose is to answer one question: Who am I…really? We’re divine, cosmically, miraculously, powerful souls, and we can and will know it from our own direct experience. In the end, we’re to be masters of the art of living gracefully, not just students, co-dependents, tax deductions, or baby-makers. And, dear hearts, we learn way faster than men. Doesn’t that sound just like us? Have a beautifully blessed 2014!

Baring All The Rise & Reveal of the Midriff The exposed midriff has a celebrity endorsement of the highest pedigree, having seen red carpet outings on Gwyneth Paltrow, Rooney Mara, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez and Solange Knowles. A mixed bunch, appealing to a broad assortment of customers. And then there’s Rihanna, who can’t keep her abs in for love nor money (and why would she?!): given her 85 million online followers, there’s a fair few eyeballs on her sartorial choices.
BY VICTORIA Hemlines, trouser shapes and sleeve lengths change seasonally, but it takes a little longer for the exposure of a previously covered area to be adopted by the mainstream. Backless, hipster and plunge find themselves returning to trend far less frequently than easier to wear shapes. But there’s one reveal which has made it to rapid success: where did the midriff suddenly spring from?
But from where did the trend stem? And once it’s taken away from the honed and toned A-list bods, does it actually sell to the masses? Are consumers willing to part with their cash and parade their ribcages? Examining the data, we expose more than a little flesh. Look back a year ago to that stellar Stella McCartney collection from Autumn/Winter 2011/12, which graced a mind-boggling number of magazine covers and a-listers and you’ll spot the exposed midriffs of Kate Winslet, Kate Hudson and Jane Fonda amongst the acres of black and streamlined frocks. In the same season, cool kids Carven were up to flashing tricks with their twill tartan cutaway dress. Shown in February 2011, it didn’t take long for highstreet retailers to react; very quickly stomach-baring cutaways appeared on the bodycon dresses
– 36 –
they were offering. So where are we now? What’s selling and to who? Let’s first look at Rih Rih’s preferred flesh flasher: the bralet. A relatively new garment to the fashion scene, it’s easy to see consumers latching onto the terminology and their sentiment towards the piece grows. Sentiment towards the garment ran high following the September SS12 shows, but volume of chatter was still low. Fashion insiders were raving about what they’d seen at Dolce & Gabbana but the consuming public wasn’t yet onboard. When the high street versions arrived in March, volume of chatter soared and has continued building over the summer, with sales still benefitting. Within the last six weeks there have been success stories across the high street. For Topshop, this comes in the form of their 18 studded bralet, sold out in four of six sizes in just over a month. Studding works; ASOS triumphed with their leatherlook studded bralet by Hearts & Bows. At 24.99, the garment arrived online on the 3rd August and was out of stock of all five sizes a month later. Meanwhile New Look’s girlier Parisian floral bralet at 8 sold out completely in a month. Cropped tops are firm friends with the midriff trend and they’re on our
Hayden Williams
radar in a big way. While there were 174 new bralet products arriving into global stores we track in the last 90 days, there were 3,333 new crop tops in the same time. They also have a very different price distribution to bralets. The bulk of bralet products at key retailers sit between 12-16, with a premium range only extending to around 30. Cropped tops show a different story: they appeal to a far broader spread of retailers, their mode price is 60-100 and the pricing range is much greater. So what’s sold recently? Nasty Gal have seen fast sales of their $130 Dawn crochet crop top, which arrived online on the 7th August and currently sits out of stock in XS, with only 1 item remaining in two further sizes. Topshop’s 42 embellished cami sold out of all sizes in three weeks of its 10th July arrival. The subsequent late August restock sold out in days. It’s a nobrainer really, but worth noting that across bralets and cropped tops, the sell outs occur in size order, with smallest sizes selling out first, through to the largest sizes last. Being perfectly positioned to take advantage of top selling Northern Hemisphere trends, Southern Hemisphere retailers with access the right data can ensure their off-sync season offering is on the
money. General Pants in Australia have done just that, with a number of midriff-baring successes recently. The $49.50 (AUD) Martika floral crop top by Subtitled sold out of all sizes in a little over a month of its 13th July arrival. This is a trend Australia can expect to see big return from as they go into their Spring/Summer 2013/14. The final category of midriff exposures is the cutaway dress. This garment has seen the least number of new arrivals in the past 90 days - 140 new products. It hasn’t sold so well, with discounting seen at Topshop, ASOS and River Island on products that arrived in the last two months. It looks like a case of arriving too late in the season; River Island’s 55 floral print cut out prom dress didn’t hit online stores until July. By August the price had dropped by 50% and still no sizes see sell through. Southern Hemisphere are capitalizing on this, injecting the style at the start of their spring General Pants’ Lennox collared dress at $129 dropped on the mid August and was sold out by August’s end. The consumer demand for stomach-baring product is clearly there, but needs to be seasonally appropriate to the customer’s own climate. Floral cutaway dresses in autumn are not the way to do it.
– 37 –
So how can the Northern Hemisphere keep appealing to customers? Separates are working better for this trend, so buyers and design teams need to consider their range planning and the opportunities this trend opens up within the range. If consumers want cropped tops through winter, they’re going to need higher waistlines on skirts/bottoms in order to still feel the garment is relevant to their environment. Do that and consumers may just make a double spend! And cropped doesn’t have to mean chilly. In the last few weeks there has been an influx of cropped knitwear arriving online from high end designers such as Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and Preen, which cements the trend’s status.

BIASA GALLERY LAUNCH Starring Sebastiano Navarra
BY KATYA Over the years, Susanna Perini and BIASA ArtSpace have become established names in Indonesian art circles. A contemporary art gallery, BIASA ArtSpace was founded in Bali in 2005. From that moment, the gallery became a great supporter and developer of Indonesian contemporary art and at the same time encouraged foreign artists to visit the shores of Bali, showcasing their various exhibitions around Indonesia Also a fashion designer by trade, Susanna was inquisitively fond of the idea to merge art with style. Just recently, in August 2013, BIASA had their ART+FASHION Event, combining the opening of Sara Nuytemans exhibition “Observatories of the Self” with the preview of BIASA Fall 2013-2014 collection. Continuing her inspiration, Susanna then decided to turn her gallery into a fashion, art and lifestyle store. Now, the space
resonates a different image, with the added cylindrical changing rooms, clothes racks with pieces from the latest collection and various art pieces ranging from paintings, to light-boxes and installations placed in different corners, under the stairs, on the window sills - pretty much everywhere. Though the gallery’s spacious and minimalistic feeling is ever present, your eyes rarely get bored. The second floor is currently hosting the exhibition of Sebastiano Navarra, an Italian artist, with respected credentials in the advertising industry, who is also known to have a history of collaborating with painters, architects, illustrators and designers from all over the world. His appreciation of both pop art and works from the Masters of the Renaissance resulted in his “Puzzle Art” exhibition. Well known paintings, such as Leonardo’s “Lady with an Ermine”, Bottichelli’s “Birth of Venus” and

“Las Meninas” by Diego Velázquez, experience modern modification in Navarra’s works. All the paintings are done with the thinnest brush strokes of acrylic paint on wooden panels of different sizes and shapes, combined together as a puzzle. (See his art in the following pages) The BIASA events are always a treat for an artistic soul and the space itself never ceases to surprise visitors with its diversity. So, if one of these rainy days you decide to do something a little different from your usual island-life routine, a visit to BIASA Art Space is definitely an option to be considered. And in between those rainy days, we eagerly look forward to the next exhibition. www.biasabali.com

TOP 10 TRENDS OF 2013 BY KATIE
Looked at the biggest apparel stories of 2013, we’re back with the best selling trends of the last twelve months. Drawn from the apparel database, it has determined which were the global fashion hits. Crop tops There was a global intake of breath as SS13 trends dictated abs would be on show this year. Retailers who reacted to the catwalk’s warning signs did well, with products selling fast in jersey, knit and shirts. There were more than 56,000 new cropped products arriving online this year, with the mass market accounting for 56% of products. Our data indicated that this would be a hit, and it’s likely going to stay amongst the bestsellers as we head into SS14. Leopard print 25,169 new leopard print items arrived online at global retailers during 2013 and were repeatedly featured in our Top Mover reports, which detail the fastest selling garments each month. The trend was boosted by numerous influential street style bloggers and celebrity sightings. Working across both men’s and women’s wear, this trend flew because it received both designer and mass market support simultaneously - Farfetch have been the number one stockist of the trend this year, followed by ASOS. Across markets, leopard print footwear sold the best, seeing the most full-priced replenishments. Checks & Plaids This was the largest commercial menswear trend this year, and retailers are still gaining big wins with plaid print on classic shirting items; styles sold out swiftly last month from Givenchy, Forever 21 and ASOS. With more than 520,000 influential online mentions and 22,765 new products arriving
online this year, plaid has been a hit in women’s wear too (with a split of 51% to 49% of products being for men and women respectively). Women’s wear was also spread across a broader product range, with plaid prints on trousers, skirts and dresses selling well for mass and premium markets.
products introduced to the market this year, the shape has gone on to sell spectacularly (in both leather and other fabrics). The mass market owned this trend, with 62% of biker jackets retailing there. John Lewis came through as the real winner, with 10 different styles replenished at full price this year.
Sweaters We wrote about these guys recently (here) and 2013 really has been a killer year for the sweater. Statement branded luxury sweaters, mass market slogans or the classic plain variety, this commercial winner has serious stamina across men’s, women’s and children’s wear.
Metallics Kick started by Burberry’s sweet wrapper feast of a collection for SS13, metallic fabrics have seen good movement across all markets. The majority of the year’s bestsellers come from the premium market, with Jaeger London, Whistles, Ostwald Helgason and Topshop retailing metallic superstars at 100-365. But kudos to Boohoo, whose 12 metallic skirt sold out in 2 days.
Bomber jackets The same movement propelling the sweater trend can be thanked for the enormous success of the bomber jacket in 2013: with designers referencing street wear at just the right moment, the style was picked up by style influencers like Cara Delavigne, Harry Styles and Rihanna. Consequently we’ve seen the garment repeatedly replenished at Forever 21, ASOS, Topshop and Topman, River Island, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks. Leather Trans-seasonal merchandising took a hold of retailers this year, and leather shone through as a good investment. Making its transition from luxury to mass market seamlessly, our commercial database accounts for nearly 92,000 new leather items coming online this year; 72% being womens wear. SS14 runway analysis gives a good gauge that this trend is sticking with us into the New Year. Biker jackets One of the best selling types of leather garment in 2013 has been the biker jacket. With 17,566 new

Dungarees With close to 94,000 influential online mentions this year, this is a trend we consistently saw on street style bloggers throughout the year. Teaming up with the cropped top trend, nodding to the sports luxe story and being a vital update to the denim category has propelled this trend further than Alexa Chung ever imagined. Zara, New Look, ASOS and Topshop are reaping the rewards of their well-timed actions. Printed trousers A direct influence from the runway, printed trousers were picked up by the premium market at lightening speed, allowing them to showcase their access to delectable prints. With 8,061 new products arriving online during 2013, House of Fraser was the biggest retailer and Zara were the retail brand with the biggest assortment. Readers! What will be the best trends for 2014?

HEART KINGDOM GET YOUR SPARKLE ON BY AstriD
Celebs know how to bring the glitz and glam to every red carpet by wearing dazzling sequin dresses. With the holidays coming up, it’s prime time to rock festive glittery apparel to be a show-stunner. The festive season is fast approaching but if you’re still looking for the perfect party outfit fear not, as I’ve done all the hard work for you.
RULE #1 – KEEP IT SIMPLE Don’t pair your dress with a clutch and shoes in matching sequins or rhinestones and avoid large, heavy jewelry. Delicate stud earrings are a better match with a sequin dress than a dramatic chandelier style. I’d prefer your hair up – messy bundle.
If you have read my previous article about the metallic trend is not much a difference than this one – this trend has always been around. If there’s any time of the year that you can get away that requires sequins, it’s certainly Christmas and December 31st. Which I positively encourage it! Here are my picks – which I know you’d love them too!
From sequin dresses, the key to looking chic rather than cheap is to keep the styling simple and not overload the sparkle. Don’t forget, You would like to be the star of the night and not looking like a Vegas-showgirl. When you’re wearing a sequin dress, all eyes are sure to be on you. That makes choosing the right accessories and accompanying pieces even more important -- and difficult -- than with a more subtle outfit. Since sequins are so bold and eye-catching, you should allow the dress to stand on its own by keeping the rest of your look more low-key.

RULE #2 –KEEP IT CASUAL Usually, a sequin dress is saved for special occasions and evenings out. However, you’ll get more use out of your dress if you find casual ways to style it. Throw on a biker jacket or a fitted black blazer.
RULE #3 – PLAY WITH TEXTURE If the sequins are a neutral color like black or silver, you can also play with color -- pair it with a pop colored handbag to make your dress pop. Even basic leather heels that feature interesting cutouts. Make sure your make-up is a bit subtle.
Life won’t sparkle unless you do! Wishing you a tremendous new year full with glitters & magic stardust.
Watercress Café on Jl Batubelig has been open just over a year and has quickly earned a solid reputation for their rustic breakfasts, healthy lunch showcase and excellent coffees by Revolver. From mid January Watercress will open for dinner and be known after 6pm as Watercress “Malam.” The newly renovated front bar area will have a fresh share plate menu to compliment the new cocktail list including some original twists on classics, a range of inspired ice teas as well as premium spirits served with fresh pressed juices for the health conscious in us all. “Dinners will be a little more sophisticated but will remain true to the Watercress casual dining philosophy serving up honest, abundant food with an expansive wine list,” explains the new manager and expert Sommelier, Josh Davies. We all know Watercress by day, however the space is full of charisma and charm in the evenings. Expect some surprises; Watercress is taking things to the next level and will surely be the next evening hotspot on Batubelig. WWW.WATERCRESSBALI.COM

OSSOTEL
Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou?
BY KATIE TRUMAN In downtown Legian it appears, and along with adjoining Ossotel Hotel, sexy restaurant-bar Romeos is a much needed, upscale addition to this long-standing tourist suburb If you’re familiar with Legian (and I certainly am, based here for years), sophisticated and urbane establishments, putting it “diplomatically,” are somewhat lacking. Pullman Nirwana and The Stones hotels added an up-market injection into Legian, but they’re fivestars and along the seafront. Even Kuta is getting a posh makeover, while Legian is getting left behind, looking well-worn round the edges and almost nigh on impossible supplying a cosmopolitan- standard cocktail and gastronomic menu. So imagine my surprise (read: knock-me-down with a feather shock!) when wandering around budget-traveler strip Jalan Padma Utara, I feast my eyes on outrageous Romeos Restaurant-bar and boutique Ossotel Hotel (at the rear). It’s almost as if some giant spaceship had plonked itself down amongst tired old warung- central. Romeos is now easily the classiest joint in the neighbourhood – and we ain’t talking just the glam interiors, which come designed with all glass floorto-ceiling walls, lofty ceiling, bare brickwork and clean-line dining tables. Unusually Romeo’s offers aircon-bliss, although there’s a lengthy counter table outside for voyeuristic
street-side viewing (if you must). A stand-alone establishment next door to Ossotel, Romeos concept is Bar +Grillery, or “American rustic bistro” presenting high standard but relaxed, affordable dining and an accompanying destination bar serving-up signature cocktails and eclectic wines. Look out for planned weekend DJ sessions. Could’ve guessed there’s a Jakarta brain behind this, mastermind Felix assisted by quite the impressive team, including a couple of chefs with combined kitchen experience from Canggu Club, Mozaic and Sofitel Bangkok and well-respected Mixologist (a first for downtown Legian?) Tim Adams, previously bar consultant for Potato Head Jakarta and Mantra and running a restaurant by aged 20 in the cut-throat culinary turf that is Paris. The menu signature is Black Board Grill, which includes popular “Slow cooked pork back ribs, chili rub and cider BBQ sauce:” I don’t even like ribs, but these are insanely succulent , slow cooked for some 18 hours and served on a wooden platter. My accompanying side-dish is creamy potato gratin, parmesan, chives and roasted garlic butter, but others might include Mac-n-Cheese. Alternative Grill dishes cover Romeos Mix Grill and Scotch Fillet (200gr), Appetizers such as Steamed Mussels

in white wine sauce and Mains include, Salmon and Seafood Stew. All- day dining also offers Big Breakfasts (buffet or a la carte), book-in-advance Family Roasts and daily chef specials. Romeos mixologist is a stickler for traditions and the great Classic Cocktails, infused with modern twists and personal interpretations. “How the prestigious hotels in New York and London would serve them. Here, it’s all about balance,” explains Tim. From an evolving drinks list, I sample Cucumber Gimlet and Gin Basil Smash – both refreshingly light and chilled, with exotic undertones from fresh ingredients. Other specialties run to authentic Whisky Sours and carbonated cocktails, such as lovelybubbly Carbonated Mojitos. All supped at the sociable bar counter on high stools. Ossotel Hotel Separated by a transition-style lobby area with fabulous tamarind wood reception desk, Ossotel introduces a refreshing urban chic boutique hotel
for downtown Legian (even their website is funky fresh). Ossotel’s design and interiors are ubercontemporary yet timeless, modern tropical design fusing simplicity, functionality, ergonomic elements and er, good taste. Smart slinky rooms – Superior, Deluxe Pool and Suites – are sparkly clean with private balconies directly facing the 88-metre lap pool running the hotel’s entire length. Stay in a Deluxe Pool ground-floor room and roll out of bed straight into the pool from your private terrace. Interiors are sleek beige and white, with tasteful leather furnishings and black and white framed photographs hung above the bed. Rooms come equipped with 39-inch LED TV with 60 satellite channels, DVD player and lap-top sized safety deposit box, plus complimentary hi-speed WiiFi Internet. Ensuite bathrooms feature
walk-in rainforest showers and superior bathroom fixtures; the more spacious Suites, one on each floor, additionally feature a stand-alone bathtub with LED TV overhead (how civilized!) along with a massive 55inch LED TV in the bedroom. Evidently a great deal of thought went into guest-friendly features; too many to mention but including outrageous bed comforts with top-notch King Koil mattresses, personally sourced fluffy pillows and crisp white cotton duvets, as well as noise-free drawers, overbed individual reading lamps and hand-chosen bathroom amenities in functional packaging. Innovative guest services cover private beach club facilities and direct beach access, airport transfers with iPad check-ins in the car rather than the

lobby – so you can head straight to your room and pool – and butlerstyle Concierge service. And of course, you get Romeo’s breakfast and room service. Amazingly, these great value rooms start at around US$100 (try that in Singapore). Say what you will about Legian, but centrally-located Ossotel is a short stagger rom the Indian Ocean and surfing beach and bang in the middle of Kuta and Seminyak’s nocturnal hotspots, making it the party base for discerning travelers in Legian. FASHION HOROSCOPE Aries
Instead of leaving your career sector as she should have by now Venus, planet of beauty is instead spending her first week in retrograde motion. This is shifting the majority of your fashion focus onto the past and not just when it comes to your professional image. With this comes both a nostalgic focus and a new sense of resolve.
Leo
Taurus
This is one year when you shouldn’t worry too much about indulging in too many excesses over Christmas or how many calories you’re consuming, for you’ll find that you will naturally burn this off over the coming days and weeks, with life due to remain busy. Instead give yourself permission to have some guilt free experiences, you’ve chosen to fully embrace the Christmas NYE spirits and all the pleasures it brought.
Gemini
While you will always have the Sun in a playful part of your chart over Christmas and NYE, always have and always will, this year what is missing is the fight to retain a balance between work and play. It’s been 21 years since you’ve had no planetary activity in your work sector over the holiday period, giving you no excuses to hide behind. With the first 3 months of 2014 likely to be the busiest, take time out to play and have fun while you can.
Cancer
With the Sun always spending Christmas and NYE in your home and family sector this is always a time of year when home and family are important and this year that is even more so. With the Sun focused on the future, Venus’ retrograde phase here focused on the past and Mercury here to ensure the communication lines are open, this is a time for both new beginnings and old traditions, bringing home the true spirit of festivities.
Don’t worry too much if you got into temptation and enjoying a little too much Christmas NYE excess, trusting that you can more than make up for lost time later. If you’re already making mental promises to yourself that you’ll join a gym, take up walking or find some other way to physically work off all excesses of late, then they’re not the hollow promises they may have been in the past. There really is a new, healthier version of you just waiting to emerge. You have the confidence of knowing that while you have some powerful forces in play on the income, work and career fronts and this is something you can easily pick up on in the New Year, that there is no reason for keeping your professional and money hats on over the weekend. In fact, it’s by walking away and having a break that you’ll return with a fresh perspective. Do what you can to make family and having fun a priority. The focus will always be on your relationships over Christmas and New Year Eve and sometimes that can create some personal and/ or relationship tension. Yet from two different fronts and in two very different ways you have the means to ensure that the communication lines are open, turning this into an opportunity to create something special. While your emotional and intuitive responses are able to find a voice you’ll also find it hard to sweat the small stuff.
Virgo
Libra
Scorpio
Whatever you’ve done over Christmas and NYE and no matter whether you got to spend the time with family and friends or some of your love ones are strung out around the globe, this is a time for reaching out, connecting and communication. We live in a global age where Skype, the phone and internet lines reach around the globe, with no excuses for not reaching out and connecting with those that are top of your mind.
–– 70 70 ––
Sagittarius
Avoid a tendency that often comes into play over Christmas and NYE to put your whole life under the microscope, choosing to stay in the moment. A time for making New Year resolutions will come later and with your birthday month having come to an end, you’ve still got plenty of ideas that need time to play out. Focus on simply enjoying the moment, doing and thinking of the things that instill a sense of confidence and meaning.
Capricorn
While you might think that this isn’t the kind of day to put yourself first and that to really buy into the festivities spirits you’ve got to put everyone else first, that isn’t necessarily the case. What really gives those you love and care about the most permission to relax, have fun and enjoy the moment is seeing you happy and relaxed. You do those around you the biggest favor imaginable, by looking after you.
Aquarius
While the parties of the end of the year is always a time for taking it easy, always falling in the early days of the month long wind down of your current solar year, this year there are some pleasurable enticements. You’ll find real pleasure from those moments when you get to chill out, relax and unwind and after the busy year you’ve had, that’s exactly what you need. Whether on your own, with friends or family, give yourself permission to step out of life’s fast lane.
Pisces
While all the planetary activity in your relationship sector for the year ran its course last month, as the Moon wrapped up his last visit for the year this puts the focus on your relationships, making them a priority over Christmas and NYE. Chances are your relationships have been on a roller coaster ride over recent months, but with much calmer seas ahead and more stable influences in play, this is a chance to regroup.

FIT & TIPS SMALL BALL, BIG RESULTS THE MINI FIT BALL
By MELANIE Mini fit balls are fun to use and simply fierce at improving your core strength while reaching and toning areas you may have been trying to camouflage like inner thighs, your tummy’s ‘love handles’, or the famed ‘bat-wings’ of loose underarm skin. For optimal results, follow this suggested routine a minimum of two times per week along with your regular strength training and cardio sessions. Trainer: Summer
Shape uber-nice arms, shoulders, back + legs: Start by standing with your knees soft, stomach tucked, plus neck and shoulders relaxed. Begin to press the ball tightly as possible with the palms of your hands as you raise legs into a calf raise position. Said another way, squeeze the ball as you raise up on your toes, slowly release the grip on the ball as you set your feet flat on the mat. Repeat 15 to 20 reps, slowly and with intense power. Up to 3 sets.
Inner thighs + buttocks burning and strong: Position yourself lying on the floor with your legs straight up, feet flexed. Note: it’s very important to flex your feet at all times during this set to protect the knees from strain. Place arms out to the side, palms face down position. Slowly squeeze ball as tight as you can, and then hold ball in neutral between your ankles. Repeat 15 to 20 reps, slowly but with intense power. Up to 3 sets.
Trim and tone your torso + tummy as shoulders, back & arms feel the love: Start by leaning over with the ball in hands but resting on the floor outside your left foot. Slightly bend your left knee, but be sure to straighten your right leg the whole time. Bring the ball up from the floor, briefly in front of your chest, and then stretching above the right side of your head. The key is that you want to feel your side abs stretching in the foot/floor position, and in the overhead position- so focus to reach your body long for a deeper sculpt. Repeat 15 to 20 reps. Change legs and apply same rules to Right side(keep left leg straight). Up to 3 sets.
