2014 trends BY ANGELINA

So as another year draws to a close but what is hot and what is not when it comes to 2014? Well dear friends, the answers are just a heartbeat away! It is that time of year when fashionistas across the globe come together in order to discuss what will make the catwalks of London, Paris, Milan and New York as well as what trends will take centre stage this year. So lets check out the lowdown on the snoops and scoops of what is exactly trending for 2014. Mod World This particular type of trend is believed to be harking back to the 1960s. This retro style takes advantage of simple designs and shapes, whilst Mod World focuses its attention on two different colour themes. Firstly it is around multicoloured items as well as a black and white palette. This gives the impression of being both strong and elegant which would go alongside numerous jewellery items including wedding rings. Other key patterns that Mod World brings feature: - Geometric design. - Cabana stripes. - Cropped pants. - A-line dresses. Glam grunge appeal Another popular trend that you will see next year is glam grunge. This is a much more modern take on the trends which were set in the 1990s. Meanwhile, there is plenty of soft appearance in the designs, whilst there are several elements which have been bought together with denim

playing an important role. Some of the most significant colours that will have an exciting part range from steel blue to several wine shades. On the other hand, you should look out for a wealth of patterns offering: - Camouflage. - Leopard print. - Florals. - Plaid Provincial picnic trend This is supposed to be a clean look which is reminiscent of the typical sweetheart look. It is entirely based on nautical themes which incorporate a host of floral patterns not to mention stripes, soft plaids and much more. On the other hand, red is certainly a colour which will be in next year. Vibrant and the symbol of passion it will be one of the most talked about shades come next year. Some of the extra colours that will rate high up the list feature: - Banana yellow. - Cool minty blue. - Cotton voile. - Linen white Quirky girly Some fashion lines are bringing together unusual feminine fashion styles which sit perfectly alongside more girly outfits. This includes the likes of cat prints not to mention jackets and socks that take their inspiration from the school playground with plenty of pastel colours to boot. Nonetheless this is definitely going to cause a stir among those fashion conscious females who desire this type of style.

– 24 –

Patterns Again, this is an important trend which has come back into ladies fashion and will be apparent in certain forms. From gingham checks and stripes to different types of cherries fruit prints, there is plenty to write home about! Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to enjoy plenty of patterns which take their inspiration from the West including: - Toile and A line skirts. - Shirtdress. - Jumpsuits - Ruffled dresses - Complete skirt outfits with an eyelet edging. Safari Another iconic collection that is so on trend, Safari will be hot in the next twelve months. It will be the next big street trend which is down to plenty of fashion houses launching their own exclusive collections of jungle type wear. This will no doubt make all the right impressions, so you should look out for: - Sharp safari suits. - Shorts. - Sharp jackets So it seems that dressing to impress is set to be launched in many different forms in 2014. With plenty of unique styles and interesting trends to choose from, there is plenty to look forward to next spring and summer. Just be yourself !!!

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR...

({V})

Beware using sprays and intimate deodorants. It is best to avoid products with fragrance, whether tampons, towels or wipes. The chemicals and perfumes can alter the pH exposing you to infections and bacteria, choose everything without fragrance.

by VERONICA Talking about health care, we cannot forget the most intimate area of y our body, the genitals. It is a very delicate one, so it is important to know that some everyday gestures that might not seem harmful, can affect your PH resulting in irritation, discomfort and infections.

Good sexual habits It is suggested to urinate before and after sex, it helps to release the bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections. Periodically perform a Pap (Papanicolau) test, it is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervix cancer. This type of cancer is the second most common one in women worldwide and it is caused by a sexually transmitted virus called the human papilloma virus.

Fresh and Cotton Underwear Use clothing that allows air circulation, especially during hot and humid weather, favourite conditions for bacteria growth. It is better to use cotton underwear because it better absorbs moisture and allows air to circulate. Avoid nylon and lycra. It is not recommended to use panty liners. Too tight pants or jeans have the same effect as inadequate underwear.

If you provide your skin care creams, think that your vulva and vagina also require attention when vaginal dryness appears. Some pharmacies offer gels containing soy isoflavones, with moisturizing and soothing properties that help prevent vaginal dryness. Isoflavones tablets, capsules of evening primrose oil, vitamins A and E also improve skin condition of the whole body, including the mucosa.

Neutral or specific soaps When taking a shower, wash the outside area of the vagina with a mild soap. Avoid aggressive products that can affect the PH in the area. Even we agree that the idea is to stay clean, you should not eliminate also the “good bacterias” as it may cause dryness and discomfort. The best are neutral soaps.

In the case you use lubricants, it is preferable to use water or lubricants with water-soluble base. Those no water based are derived from petroleum and mainly other mineral oils. They tend to adhere to the vaginal mucosa and may facilitate the development of germs and infections. A light gel that lacks taste, odor or color is preferable.

– 26 –

Fluids Vaginal fluids are absolutely normal, help cleanse the vagina and keep it healthy. They vary from woman to woman, depending on age and according to the period of the menstrual cycle that you are. But if its consistency, color or odor increase or decrease suddenly it can be a sign that something is wrong. Vaginal infections can be caused by several factors, including the use of medications such as antibiotics or drugs that have high levels of estrogen, also diabetes and stress. The pH of the vagina of a fertile woman is 4.5 to 5.0, this serves to prevent from infections. But Contraceptives can also alter the pH of the vagina, specially in those who consume pills with high estrogen levels. Natural yogurt and probiotics can help on prevention when you feel that your immune system is a bit weak or if you are taking antibiotics. When an abnormal vaginal discharge persists for more than a week or gets worse, there is bleeding outside of menstruation, painful urination or blood in the urine, abdominal or pelvic pain, high fever, blisters or other lesions in the vagina or vulva you must visit a specialist. Urinary issues This area of the body can also be affected by other conditions that are associated with the urinary tract. Cystitis is a clear example of evil that affects many people on more than one occasion throughout life. This is a severe infection with consequences

– HEALTH –

and symptoms such as sharp pain in the urinary tract, as well as itching and constant desire to urinate. Food plays a very important role in this case, these are some of the recommended ones that will help you to avoid or mitigate the effects of cystitis. In most cases cystitis occurs in women originated from a bacterium known as Escherichia coli, which is located in the anus. In women, the short distance between these two zones increase the chances of developing this infection. Although it can be also transmitted through sex or by the use of wet clothes and swimsuits. Water Staying hydrated is key to avoid infection, water helps dilute the urine, which helps to remove all the bacteria from your system. When suffering from urinary tract infections, take more than two liters of water per day. Cranberries Great ally right at that moment when you begin to feel discomfort. If you drink cranberry juice just when you start feeling the infection, you can prevent or at least get relief from symptoms. Make sure it has not added sugar, sugar is the food for bacteria and fungi. Ideally take natural or frozen. Coconut water also helps cooling the urinary tract.

Vitamin C As a supplement or in fruits and vegetables, vitamin C increases the acidity of urine helping to decrease the number of harmful bacteria that are present in the urinary system. You can find in oranges, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, cantaloupe and red pepper. Sodium Bicarbonate You can treat mild urinary tract infection (symptoms lasting less than two days) adding a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. It helps to neutralize acid in the urine, speeding your recovery. It is suggested taking a daily glass of this remedy immediately after drinking two glasses of water. To avoid during urinary infections: • Lactose, especially milk. • Caffeine, teas and sodas, they stress your bladder and increase your levels of blood sugar. • Carbohydrate intake, because it raises your levels of blood sugar feeding the bacteria. • Stress, take your time, especially to go to bathroom. Do not hold the urine, it causes the bladder to dilate not draining completely, giving place where bacteria can easily grow. •Although it may sound obvious, do not forget to wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria crawls towards the genitals. • Alcohol is an irritant to the urinary tract of men and women, and should be avoided for a bladder infection .

– 27 –

Emotional causes Anger, anxiety and clinging to old ideas or solutions are emotional factors predisposing the body to acquire this condition. It is advisable to seek for flexible, open and trusted free thinking. Of course, if symptoms persist you should go to the doctor immediately, especially in cases of blood in the urine, fever, vomiting, high blood pressure, a history of kidney disease or if you are diabetic. Finally, when talking about STD (sexual transmitted diseases), there is not doubt that we can talk about this for long time. Now, as general wise advice, never have have sex without protection, specially during sporadic “love stories” ;).

karma KONVERSATIONS Wild Thing….You Make My Heart Sing

by SWATHIMAA I came across a divinely appropriate quote, the other day, by the wonderfully inappropriate Anaïs Nin, immortalized as the wild, more-than-a-woman (if that’s possible), poster child for the brilliantly bohemian in Henry Miller’s semi-autobiographical novel, Tropic of Cancer. In real life, sister Anaïs was more than the 1930’s bra-less, insightful, soulfully wisecracking clarion of unbridled passions. She was an oracle of the heart. Since then, no self-respecting woman past puberty would ever deny that, somewhere deep within our dancing DNA, there’s surely a little Nin in all of us. As a young woman, she wrote: “None of us sees thing as they are. We see them as we are.” Fortuitously cool, yes? Considering it speaks to the heart of the holiday of Love that’s upon us, I mean. I propose we speak more of it, now, out of respect for our selves, the lady, and the day.

I’ll go first. Love is more than a manysplendored thing. It’s the most precious, splendored thing. That’s why it’s so rare — between lovers of the human persuasion, anyway, where it particularly appears to be sadly lacking in length, weight, height, and depth. True love, for us, seems to be conditional and circumstantial. We probably bet we see it, have experienced it, or hope(d) to experience it, during candlelit dinners, the exchanging of vows and in the throws of committed passion, if such a thing exists for us. Please don’t take this as dismissive but love, in all its forms, primarily exists, thrives, and flourishes in our minds. For all intents and purposes, True Love is a concept, not a reality. That’s our Anaïs’ point… or part of it. And, if there’s any truth to this — and it seems plausible there is — in God’s name, why?

– 28 –

Because we each live in our own world and see it as an extension of ourselves. To me, you’re all in mine. But, here’s the thing: for all of you — for every other conscious, living being — the truth is exactly the opposite. I’m in your world, not the other way around. This coexistence of opposites is a fundamental characteristic of our personal perception and virtually impossible to dismiss or overcome. And, it’s from this perspective that we relate to everyone and everything. Ancient spiritual texts call this rishi devata chandas. There’s the ‘knower’ (rishi), the process of knowing (devata), and the object to be known (chandas). In your world, you’re the rishi and all the rest of us are chandas. But, for each of the rest of us, those positions reverse because it’s us doing the knowing. This is the underlying mechanics of all our relationships. In the YogaVasishtha, the 2nd oldest and longest book ever written, the amazing Guru Vasishtha states, unequivocally, “There is no life without conflict.” This is the reason why. As a woman, it’s horrifying to even entertain the thought of being ‘objectified’. But, the truth is, because of the nature of our perception, we all objectify everyone and everything, except

our self. It’s simply a universal truth. But, we also have a tendency to justify this, based on the qualities we perceive in the object(s) we wish to know better; we do this by categorizing them, according to the role we wish them to play ‘in our world’ and in our lives. We place everyone and everything in their own little cubbyholes, either singularly or as a group, based on our personal preferences, and relate to them accordingly. We don’t see or know them as they really are. As a natural extension of this, because you inherently see everyone you relate to as being part of your own personal universe, you carry the pre-conceived notion that, whoever it is, is in a relationship with you primarily for your benefit, not theirs. This is how the universal conflict of opposing perspectives becomes expressed in very personal ways. And, it’s why most relationships fail. If, for example, one of the underlying reasons you go into a relationship is to have your partner help solve your problems, once he says, “I love you,” you expect him to be responsible for all or part of them. Or if, instead, you honestly desire to know, live, and share True Love through the relationship, you’ll expect your partner to be responsible for insuring that you do. Yet, because all your desires are based on your own perception,

– 29 –

no one has the authority to fix your problems or fulfill your desires except you. You’re responsible for yours, just as everyone else is responsible for theirs. The resolution to this lies in one of Spirituality’s greatest secrets. One of the most profound reasons the great saints promote meditation — a foolproof means to increase the power of your soul so it expresses itself fully in your life — is because, once it does, your perception starts to transcend your world and begins to bridge the gap between yours and everyone else’s. Then, the radiant, expansive, glorious being you truly are realizes some extraordinary things: other people’s happiness actually brings you intense joy, not jealousy or envy; and, there, in their world, you have the authority to truly heal them and help them fulfill their deepest longings. There, the roles aren’t reversed. You become co-authors. Soul mates. And, that’s when True Love fills every breath you take. Angela Anaïs Juana Antolina Rosa Edelmira Nin y Culmell, we love you! If my vote counts for anything, from now on, we’re claiming the 14th of February as St. Anaïs Day. You totally deserve it.

ANDIEN jazzy soul and beyond

By Yeanne Hi Andien, nice meeting you ;) may u tell us a bit about you? Where are you from? Where do you stay? Im Indonesian and i live in Jakarta You’re a jazz singer known for having a unique personal style. Can you tell us about some of the traditions that have influenced your singing? My music is influenced by my surroundings. When i was young, my grandfather used to play records of Jazz music to me. As the time goes by, i became influenced by friends and my vocal teacher and my band groupie. Some of these idioms can be so complex, like jazz, and some so simple, like pop or folk. How do you reconcile that? To me all music is complex and all music is simple depending on how you see it. And Jazz, when you sing it, its more like telling a story than just singing.

Could you tell us about a project or two you’re most proud of?

Do you have a “pygmalion” that always been beside you during your career?

To graduate with good grades and to be a singer.

There are 2 people. First is Dovie my manager. The other is my producer Nikita Dompas, she is also my music director and guitarist. We are all good friends but we can have different opinions.

Is improve a big part of your vocal practice? Of course, as “practice makes perfect” is true to its words. How did you get involved with this last project of you? I wrote my own lirics, some friends also help me writes my songs. I choose which songs to be produced and create the album even choosing the font for it, as detailed as possibly can. Who write your lyrics song? I wrote the songs as well as my friends. How do you choose the songs that want to be on your album? By feeling? Yes thats correct. If i think that the song can be suitable once its arranged for me, I will sing it.

– 30 –

Were your suggestions songs you wanted to sing or songs you thought could work well? Yes, as i am the singer. Whatever the decision, if i do not want to sing it, it will not happen. Are there certain kinds of songs that you feel are perfect for you? Bigband, and bossanova. Do you find ample opportunities for a professional musician here? There are alot of opportunity here for musicians which is fantastic, as there are many talented musicians in Indonesia.

What do you think about internet Webbers that upload your music on internet? could it be killing the music market? Yes and no. Many recording studio in Indonesia and even the US has closed down recently. Abby road is going to be closed as well. Now many people choose home recording and their quality is really good. To sell CD is quite useless, many musicians can now depend on uploading music via internet for distribution to the music market. Any other new albums coming? Yes, by mid year :) Please, 5 words that describe yourself? Sweet, sassy, silly, smart, and sexy Thx very much Andien for your kind! Fauve wish you long time success ;) www.soundcloud.com/andienaisyah Twitter & Instagram @andienaisyah

HOW SAFE YOU ARE IN YOUR STYLE Fashion can kill you…

and Vivien Westwood. Lady Gaga, who swears by extreme fashion, has also taken several falls from her skyscraper shoes and if you can watch her live performances on YouTube, you would definitely come across a couple of shows, where she has tripped off the stage. She has been lucky enough to not break her ankle permanently. Even though I love to be in fashion following all the latest trend, but I swear by my God if I would ever don such life-risking crazy trends. My pair of three and half inch heels is enough for me to make a subtle fashion statement in my circle. BY KATIE This statement may seem too rude and brutal but it’s actually true. The high-end fashion or referring them as extreme fashioning would be more appropriate, is extremely dangerous. Is it worth risking your life in the name of fashion? That’s what I tend to think when I see girls and women falling for such life-risking trends, just as they are prancing around in shoes conceived by Alexander McQueen

If you could believe me I used to maintain a daily planner where I would write down everything I wore including accessories and footwear only to make sure I did not repeat them in the next month. I still have an extensive collection of apparels with appropriate accessories and bags, but you would not find anything which you can see and exclaim, “Oh my God, how do you wear that?” I still remember during my college

– 44 –

days, how I used to struggle hard to snug myself into a pair of tight jeans. They were so tight that I had to literally lie down and hold my breath to zip them up. There were more crazy girls in my hostel, who used to put on wet jeans, letting them dry on their body. Besides tripping from those towering heels and suffering from intestinal problems from such suffocating tight jeans, how else could fashion be deadly? Let’s dig into the history of fashion. In the Rococo era, women used to swallow a teaspoon of arsenic every day, as they believed their pale complexion would turn lighter. In early 19th century, the trend of crinoline became popular. It was a hoop skirt worn under the skirts and made from steel. The only purpose was to give the skirt a voluminous flair. This steel cage like skirt was so deadly that it could sweep away the wearer with gust of wind. They used to get entangled in the spokes of carriages leaving the women in miserable condition. Corset was another brutal trend,

which was worn to slim down the waistline. In a bid of getting hourglass figure, the corset was tightly laced thereby squeezing the entire abdomen like a toothpaste. When Scarlett O’Hara was asked to wear the corset for her movie, “Gone with the Wind” to get a sixteen-inch waist to fit into the character, she had almost passed out because of the suffocation. Bottom line is women have suffered miserably at the hands of brutal fashion trends, even sometimes because of their own stupidity like administering Brazilian wax or plucking eyebrows. There is still an array of safe and easy fashion tricks, which can keep you high on fashion and look stylish at the same time. I’ve compiled some test-proven fashion tips for you, which can help you keep miles away from those days’ ridiculous trends. Continue reading! • Add some fashionable belts to your wardrobe. They can always help you divert the onlookers’ attention, thereby saving you in bad dressing days

• Black and white can never go wrong. This timeless pairing, irrespective of any outfit, can instantly make you look classy and sophisticated • Sheer is very much in fashion these days. You can either pair your sari with a sheer blouse or a sheer top with your denims; anything that goes with the occasion • You do not have to run after highend labels to give yourself a luxury look. Sometimes a scarf or your a watch can create wonders. •In your bad hair days, you can conceal your frizzy hair by donning a fashionable headgear or bandana. The Gatsby hair accessories are quite in fashion these days. Just flow with the trend! • Go for darker shades if you want to look slimmer. A black dress or a dark colored anarkali can pass you for 5 kg thinner. • Don’t follow celeb fashion just for the quest of perfection. Rather always listen to your instincts.

– 45 –

The article was to make you aware about the dreadful side-effects of extreme fashioning. But then the statement ‘fashion can kill you’ doesn’t only adhere to breaking your ankle and choking your breathe; you can end up having a fashion disaster just like so many “fashion people in Bali”! Hope this post was useful!

– interview / ARTIST –

WECANFASHION What led you to a career in fashion photography? Do you have formal training in your background?

BY KATYA Describe to us what “WECANFASHION” is all about. What is it? WECANFASHION is a noncommercial portal with a slightly different point of view on fashion industry. It is a part of a bigger project WECANDOEVERYTHING. We are not creating celebrities and not looking for sponsors, we just unite talented people, who enjoy the creative process itself and make, in our opinion, something really new and interesting.

I started shooting fashion by accident. It seemed interesting to me to present it in a new way, to present it my way. I never specifically learned about fashion photography, i have been studying and still study art photography - from the creation of the image to it’s perception by viewers. For me photography is not only about creating images, but also the realisation of ideas, fantasies, conversations and situations. I heard that you have a Videographer background as well? I’ve been shooting videos for a very long time, since i was 16, and since then i probably have worked in all possible areas and styles. it’s more like the psychologist’s at work - you determine the goal and then spread and present the need of ideas and

– 46 –

emotions to an audience. In time, you will learn how to deliver and create that ever elusive “wow” effect in a shot, but also furthermore, how to capture the right mood and the particular order of an action. I had a broad range of experience at while at STEREOTACTIC advertising agency. This was an experience I’d more than happy return to, if the opportunity ever arose. Could you name some of the photographers who have inspired you and helped to shape your approach to fashion photography? I can’t really name anyone who inspires my vision. In other photographers works I am looking only at the presence of an idea, goals that the photographer is moving towards - some are doing it better, some worse. But in general i notice that every year there are less really interesting artists. This industry now is very accessible, so the quality steadily goes down.

What would we find in your camera bag for a typical assignment in a Studio or at location?

As you look through the viewfinder, what is the most critical moment during the capture of an image?

My bag for the studio shoot is empty. A Studio shoot for me, is a manifestation of dullness and monotones... I don’t wish to spend any time on it. Usually, I carry 3 cameras with me - middle format, 35mm and a digital camera for shooting different locations and a backup for the film.

For me the most important aspect in an image is harmony. The shape, the combination of dark and light spots, proportions, geometry, the depth and of course, the angle.

What style do you mainly shoot?

Fashion takes only 10-15% of my time. If there would be no fashion, I’d pay more attention to my art projects and photojournalism

I’m not working in a particular style. I am trying to show ‘live reality’. However, if I was to describe, perhaps my style is “Documental Realism”

If not fashion photography, what would you do with time?

What has been the best advice given to you by another photographer? “Stop using digital and shoot on film” from an old photographer friend.

– 47 –

Who is your biggest inspiration? I respect those with a clear a consciousness, those who keep moving forward and to further develop themselves. My parents are the first on my list of such individuals. They have changed so much in their lives, changing it completely and successfully reached their goals, always keeping a smile on their faces. To me, this evokes total respect. facebook.com/Wecanfashion

GINA

la isla bonita Today we introduce you Gina. This iberique native has a passion for fashion, cinema and travel. Gina’s passion led her to travel all around europa and asia. Now with a strong new look, Gina is ready to walk the world and it will be game on.

BY victoria How did you become a model, and what was your first break? It may seem romantic, but it all started one summer I was here in Bali. I had never thought about modelling: I’m not very tall and all I wanted was to be an actress. So, one afternoon, almost five years ago, I was on Echo Beach with a friend and Kirsty Ludbrook came over to me with her husband. They said they were looking for a girl to be in some photos with kimonos

and asked if I’d be willing to do the session. I freaked out! They were a couple of strangers and I was just a kid… (sorry, Kirsty) and I told her my father would call her. A couple of days later I went to the photo session, and it went really well! For some reason the camera didn’t bother me: I began to pose, I enjoyed it. I remember when my parents came to pick me up and Kirsty showed them the photos my mother was thrilled. How do you keep fit, what is your training routine and menu? I’m the typical motivated person who starts off with enormous enthusiasm. I buy the lot: the leotards, the tops and even the water bottle. At the start I usually go three days a week if all goes well, two if something stops me and one when things go wrong. The problem is that this process lasts six weeks. Every year I start off saying ‘this year, yes!’ — but it’s no good: I die in the attempt. Any excuse will do not to go. I think that now I’m

– 58 –

in Bali this will change. I’m starting next week. The bets are on. As for my diet, I tend to eat whatever I want, without being all that careful. The fact is that in my house we’ve always tended to eat small quantities, so I’m like a bird: a little bit here, a little bit there. How do you define your style and what your favorite store to shop? I wouldn’t know how to define my style. Actually, I was asked this just three days ago and my mind was a blank. The fact is that it depends on where I happen to be. It’s rather strange. The other day, packing my cases and pulling out a lot of clothes I realized that I’d had some really tacky phases, but right now, I’m in a fairly simple one. Pants, shirt and ready to go. My favourite shop…? Well, Topshop opened in Spain about two years ago. I’ve bought a lot there. Here in Bali, you’d better not leave me alone in Somewhere.

What are your main interests & hobbies? I’m a movie addict. I’m an actress, too, and at first I started out watching films from a professional point of view, but now I can’t stop. I have hundreds of movies. My hobbies? I love writing, so forgive me if I’m going on too much… What is the one fashion item that you can’t live without? Shorts. They can be problem when they’re too short. What is your favorite place to stay? The cinema. You eat popcorn, you watch a movie and there ‘s room to cuddle. Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why? There’s a new one every week. I get obsessed. Right now I love Cara Delevigne, I love her quality of indifference and couldn’t-care-less attitude to the world of fashion, which tends to be always very aesthetic and perfect. I like the contrast between her hair and her eyebrows. It’s love. A designer? Well, let’s see, I really like Amaya Arzuaga and Pepa Salazar. They’re Spanish designers. They take big risks. I would never wear what they do, but I guess that’s why I like them so much. It’s hard to pick out any one designer: each of them has things I like and things I don’t; first and foremost I like to be comfortable and feel good. Which fashion magazines do you like to read? Definitely Harpers Bazaar. It’s not only fashion: it also has articles that are very enjoyable to read. The other day I had a great time reading an interview with Woody Allen and Cate Blanchett about the new movie Blue Jasmine. I can recommend it. What’s your fashion mantra? Instagram. Hahaha Out of all of the photos the photographers took of you, which is your favorite and why? That’s a difficult one. I’ve never really thought about it. I don’t really have any one photo I like more than

another. Each one is different, and each one was taken at a different moment in my life. If I had to choose… no: it’s impossible, I can’t. What advice do you have for other aspiring models? It’s a world of huge contrasts. It has some very nice things, but others that are not so nice. Above all, be yourself. You shouldn’t try to be someone you’re not. At the end of the day, a good model is one that has a very strong personality and believes and has faith in what she does. Who are some of your favorite fashion photographers? Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, and Nick Knight. What does fashion mean to you? It is a way of telling a story. Every designer is unique, each garment is a world of its own and society has to know how to adapt to new trends. For me, fashion is a way of knowing how to adapt to different ways of expressing things. How has modeling changed other aspects of your life? I’ve always been rather a shy person. Insecure. At school I didn’t have many friends. Being a model involves being surrounded every day by people you don’t know and with whom you have to spend many hours. It’s as if you were starting in a new job each day. Fashion has helped me open up, to be sure of myself, to get over my shyness (though I’m still quite shy, but I’m improving). But I think this is the aspect of me that modelling has changed most. And of course, I’ve had to overcome my absurd fear of flying. What’s inspire you in life as a person? People, energy, cultures. I like talking to people, getting to know them; it helps you to open your mind. A few days ago, I heard something very pretty: we come into the world with nothing and we leave the world with nothing. So why are we always so concerned about what we have and what we haven’t got?

– 59 –

What’s the dream project you fantasize to do? With regard to fashion, I’d love to earn a place at the top. But my dream is to have a leading role in a film by Michael Haneke. Is that too fanciful? Through out your modelling career so far what is the best memory you have? I would roll together lots of small memories into one big one. And that memory is made up of all the people I have come into contact with, who have given me precious things. Above all, support and love. All of these people are my friends now. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I really don’t know: there’s so much I want to do… This one is optional: Do you want to share anything with the viewers that nobody knows? If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret any more. 5 words that describe you?? Optimist. Proud. Ambitious. Protective. Independent.

HEART KINGDOM SUMMER GRUNGE: FLORALS & PLAIDS BY AstriD

It seems everyone is embracing the power of the petal. The runways in New York last week were bursting with bright, bold florals for spring, while the fall pieces in stores now feature more subdued patterns in rich autumnal hues. I’m rounding up the soon to be favorite spring/summer trends right off the runways. With a decidedly 90′s feel to the spring collections, I saw a modern take on slip dresses, overalls and an interesting combination of floral and plaid. Paired together, they have shown up on many runways and in a more demure and less grungy manner. With floral overlays, lace tops paired with plaid skirts and plaid & floral-blocked prints, the trend is season appropriate and effortlessly feminine with an edge. Now I’m getting excited… Let’s start with what’s on the runway… Thakoon Panichgul has begun the collection exploring plaids and florals. The mix of the two prints gave a hit of nineties college campuses, a smell that has definitely been in the air of late. Van Noten’s show is very powerful and compelling—all the more so because those qualities were conveyed in such a light, airy manner—was an ode to plaid, a print both rebellious and romantic. I always love a new, unexpected combo, like this fall’s mix of plaid and floral. The go-to spring print mixed with the must-have fall print gives you the best of both seasons. The combination of plaid and floral can look amazing — It’s such a cool mixture of boy and girl elements, but perfecting this style can be tricky. The great thing about this emerging trend is that most of us consider floral and plaids as wardrobe staples so you likely already have them in your closet to play around with. So go ‘head, mix it up!

#STEALTHELOOK To keep the mix of plaid and floral from looking too busy, choose your base color. In this case, choose the color in the flowers to one of the stripes in the plaid shirt. Tie your plaid shirt on your waist, Put on your black booties or throw on your oversized biker jacket and it’s a perfect mix.

And this last look is going to make your life so much easier, the plaid & florals are combined already (please see below this exquisite cropped shirt)! All you got to do is finding the right bottom piece & accessories to go with it. Not too much. This look is just right.

TOWNHOUSE Welcome to the House of Fun

BY KATIE TRUMAN New York club scene and sophistication hits downtown Seminyak For three decades, New York’s “Godfather of Nightlife,” Briton Mark Baker and his international team have been the force behind legendary New York clubs and celeb-haunts, Lotus, The Double Seven, Mansion and original Buddha Bar, and producers of premier global events such as Paris Fashion Week, Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix. Pretty impressive stuff and now these events veterans have shifted operations and focus to this Island of the Gods, perhaps noting the huge potential of all- happening powerhouse Asia and booming Bali. Good news for Bali and Seminyak, as this continental shift has resulted in Townhouse, a five-storey lifestyle destination and unique culmination

of all Baker’s experience, pedigree and passion. Townhouse injects some international finesse and raises the bar (and roof) for Bali’s internationally- inclined nightspots, promising to “Bring the excitement of New York to magical Bali.” “With a booming nightlife, it’s fine what was already here, but Bali needed to take its dining and entertainment to the next level,” says Baker, who’s been visiting Bali for years, and like many, finally deciding to take root here. “Townhouse is the next logical step, the right time to open as Bali now has the style, sophistication and ability to compliment our western venues and brands.” Stylishly designed in vintage New York Brownstone meets funky urban chic, with interiors of bare brickwork walls, timbered floors and industrial piping in the rafters, Townhouse welcomes as a multi-functional playground for adults. On the second floor, American-style bistro Canvas presents “vibe dining,” along with global gourmet food and new world classics (dinner only), helmed by a top chef from New York.

– 66 –

Above here, however, on the third and fourth floors, is arguably what Townhouse is already best noted for, its Lounge club, already the hot new darling of the island party set – and beyond. To reinforce the New Yorkstyle sophistication, the Lounge is all about dressing-up, total glam and a pretty tight dress policy on the door. ONE ANOTHER LEVEL Both intimate, dimly-lit lounges emanate classic elegance and hints of colonial Gentleman’s Club, complete with fine customized leather upholstered furniture and crystal chandeliers. Lower Lounge is all about groovin’ the night away, with Funktion One sound system and rotating roster of internationallyacclaimed DJs pumping out intoxicating beats (tweaked each night from classics and house to techno). Modelled on London’s impossibly hip Soho House, the Upper Lounge or “Chill House” sets a more chilled vibe and sound, for serious time-out, surveying the crowd and outrageous gossiping. A selective menu of hand-crafted bespoke cocktails, created by a

New York mixologist (allegedly from now defunct The Double Seven), are made with fresh, cold- pressed juices and hand-cut ice. Mouth-wateringly innovative concoctions cover a wickedly rich, “Vanilla Passion Brulee” (Vodka, liqueurs, fresh vanilla pod and passion fruit extract, blended with cream and roasted hazelnut crumble), or their ultra-sexy “Cosmo” (Vodka, cranberry, orange marmalade, crème de cassis and caramelized lemon essence). With nightclub veteran Baker’s friendships with supermodels, entrepreneurs and Hollywood’s elite spanning thirty years, expect to rub shoulders with the odd celeb, jetsetter and beautiful person who hang here (Justin Bieber has already been spotted, although it’s debatable whether that’s worth bragging about). Perhaps I should put in a personal request for exclusive tip-offs if, by chance, Leo or Pharrel are in town (house)?

Things really start heating-up around 11pm, with full steam ahead until closing “late.” Need to come up for air? Stumble out onto the Lounge’s two smoking terraces, or head up onto the open Rooftop Garden, where you can hopefully secure a cabana: with distant Indian Ocean views, this hidden rooftop deck makes a fabulous perch for sunset cocktails, or later, a spot of stargazing – literally! THE DAY AFTER THE NIGHT BEFORE Conveniently installed at street-level, Squeeze is Townhouse’s funky all-day gourmet café, juice bar and avant-garde photo gallery. A legacy of Baker’s mega successful “The Juice Press” in New York, Squeeze dispenses real-deal organic cold-pressed juices. Post-partying, return here the next day for some serious detoxing (if you can’t make it out of bed, they do home deliveries) and follow the Baker mantra: “Work hard. Play hard. Cleanse, Repeat.”

FASHION’S NIGHTMARE BY VICTORIA It’s a fashion follower’s worst nightmare -- worse than looking fat, more humiliating than wearing the same dress as another party guest -it’s the dread of looking last year. Fashion trends, sometimes referred to as fads, are notoriously fickle. The fashion industry is always on the hunt for what’s new, what’s hot. For every new, must-have handbag, there’s another that gets tossed aside like, well, last year’s trend. The Fashion Cycle 1. First, there’s the emerging trend (the American Marketing Association refers to this as the “distinctiveness” part of the cycle where the trend is highly sought after. You know this as when you see that great hat/dress/shoe on the runway, red carpet or music video.

– 68 –

2. Next, comes what the AMA calls the emulation phase, where everyone wants a piece of the trend. You’ll see it in fashion magazines, newspapers, internet and TV during this phase. 3. Finally, the trend becomes saturated in the market, usually at very low prices. With trendy items like a must-have designer handbag, the item becomes widely available as a knock-off. Most of us will buy it somewhere between phases two and three. Only celebrities and fashion industry types have access to fashion fresh off the runway that hasn’t appeared in stores yet, like in the first phase of a fashion trend.

At the second phase a look is often available in high-priced designer collections. Only in the third phase, when a look makes it to the mass market, does it become affordable for most consumers. Twenty or 30 years ago it might have taken a few years to make it from red carpet to mass market, but today’s manufacturers have put the fashion cycle into hyperspeed. Sometimes a hot trend makes it into lower priced retail outlets in as little as a few months. In or Out? Affordable trendy clothing (sometimes called “fast fashion”) is a doubleedged sword: it makes fashionable looks accessible to those of us on real-life budgets, but when the market is totally saturated with a look a trend loses its appeal. It basically helps to kill the trend quicker. So how do you know how long a trend will last? A few general guidelines: • Generally speaking, most fashion trends stick around for at least a year. Some trends, usually the most understandable ones, last longer.

For example, the personalization or initial craze started with Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Carrie” necklace during season two of “Sex and the City” in 1998. The look saturated the mass market in the fall 2003 with initial handbags, sweaters -- you name it -- a full five years after it started. • One school of thought says that fashion cycles about every 20 years. Thus, the minis of the ‘80s have come back into favor now (as did the nameplate necklace mentioned above, which was hot then, too). • A big part of deciding on how long a trend is viable depends on where in the fashion cycle you bought the trend. If you bought it as a knockoff or at a discount store, then you should count on it being in for just one or two seasons. Because the fashion industry often lumps together Spring and Summer, Fall and Winter, that gives you approximately six months of wear out of a look before it looks dated. • Although there is no hard-and-fast rule about how long a fashion trend will stick around, you can bet that the more-difficult-to-pull-off looks (Uggs, large cuff jeans, trucker hats) are just

– 69 –

fads that will fade. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have fun buying them, just know that they aren’t looks that will be fresh this time next year. • Buying power can keep a trend on life support. Sometimes consumers love a look so much they just won’t let it die. Capris, crops, tank tops and flip flops are all examples of former trends which actually became wardrobe staples. •The higher the profile -- boho chic and mod are recent examples -- the more likely it is that the trend will look dated by the same next year. Likewise, the more radical the cut, color or print -- microminis, army jackets, mod graphics -- the more certain that the trend will be long over by the same time next year. The best defense against quickly changing trends is to have a wardrobe stocked with mostly classic looks: jeans, T-shirts, blazers, little black dresses. Use trendy items as an addition to a core wardrobe to give it some kick.

FASHION HOROSCOPE Aries

As the focus shifts to more social matters this month and life starts opening up, there should be more demands on your wardrobe and even the potential for fashion emergencies. Yet with Venus, planet of beauty remaining focused on the same things she’s been focused on for nearly 3 months now, your fashion choices are likely to become easier and your tastes, likes and dislikes not only well defined, but with the confidence to be yourself.

Taurus

You have reached an important point in the year for relationship matters, with the Moon not only making his first visit to your relationship sector for the year but his last before the North Node, here since August 2012, leaves next month. As the Moon brings any emotional responses to a head you may find that there are some communication issues or tensions, yet this creates the potential for a communication and/or relationship breakthrough.

Gemini

Just a week before Mercury’s return to your career sector is set to begin your new professional year in earnest, bringing a need to have your head in the game, the Moon makes a timely return to your work sector. There’ll be plenty of time to get your head in the game once Mercury returns, with a need today to trust your instincts and the emotional and intuitive responses being triggered, especially when it comes to the path forward on the work front over the coming year and beyond.

Cancer

The timing of the Moon’s first visit to your romantic sector for the year couldn’t be better, coming just as personal and/or relationship tensions are likely to come to a head. As well as giving you an intuitive read on your heart and its emotional responses, this will make it easier to see through the hype and tension, able to see this as nothing more than a chance to check you have the right balance between your personal and relationship needs.

Leo

As Mercury, planet of communication moves into his final 7 days in your relationship sector it’s more important than ever to make communication a priority, especially with so much outside support. Forging an alliance with Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos over in your communication sector, Mercury provides the means and the opportunity for both a communication and a relationship breakthrough. A lot has changed over the last 7 days.

Virgo

As the Moon makes his first visit to your communication sector for the year and his last before Mercury, planet of communication returns to your relationship sector in just 7 days time, this is a chance to get a jump on things. Where the Moon may have pushed some buttons and created some personal and/ or relationship tension earlier in the week, he completely turns things around today, with an opportunity for a communication breakthrough.

Sagittarius

As Mercury, planet of communication moves into his final 7 days in your communication sector there isn’t the urgency you would normally expect. You have the opportunity and the support to put whatever effort you want and need into your communications, but there is something in the air that is telling you that this is just the start of a long and supportive journey. At this stage it’s more about getting the ball rolling, with small steps enough for now.

Capricorn

While the Moon’s visit to your career sector over the last few days and an alliance between income and professional forces is already making it important to have your money and professional hats on, today’s social and serendipitous lunar vibes work to create a counterbalance. There is a reminder today that life can’t be all work and no play, bringing home a reminder that you can have it all and that a balanced life is the true measure of success.

Aquarius

Libra

Just a week before Mercury is due to return to your income sector, with his smart head for money due to not only get your head in the game but crank up forces slowly gaining traction, the Moon returns for a timely visit to your career sector. As well as sharpening your professional instincts, the Moon’s first visit to your career sector for the year is a chance to get your bearings and to get an intuitive read on which way and how fast the currents are moving.

Scorpio

As the Moon makes his first visit to an adventurous part of your chart for the year and his last before the Sun returns to your sign to kick off your birthday month and new solar year, there is a reminder that it’s all about the journey. Past experience has already taught you that simply going through the motions is no longer enough, with a chance to get an intuitive sense of what new options 2014 holds for you and the courage to consider some bold leaps of faith.

With Mercury now just a week away from your work sector and the Moon making his first visit to your income sector for the year, it will soon be time to put your work and money hats back on. However, don’t be surprised if you feel anything but inspired, wanting to hold onto fun and playful vibes in play for as long as you can. Yet it’s before things get busy that you have a chance to create a balance between work and play that allows you to have it all. In everything you do today, especially where you have to make some tough choices or you literally can’t be in two places at one time or all things to everyone, all the time, trust what your gut and your intuition is telling you. The only time there is real doubt is when you over think things and don’t take the time to listen to your inner voice. With the Moon making his first visit to your sign for the year that inner voice is especially eloquent.

FIT & TIPS CORE GALORE: Abs, Back & Balance By MELANIE

Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance, stability and a toned chiseled look. Core exercises are a crucial part of any workout plan as they strengthen the body, particularly the pelvis, hip, and lower back areas. Some examples of this type of exercise include crunches, reverse crunches, ball crunches, oblique crossing over crunches, air bicycling, plank, butt lifts, back extensions with ball, and many more as seen below: Trainer: Summer SWIMMING ON THE BALL Swimming on a stability ball mimics the movements of swimming through water to strengthen the back, glutes and core. Start by: laying your body’s midsection on top of the ball. Look ahead. Straighten and lengthen your hold so that your left arm is extended out and the right leg is extended behind. Hold the position momentarily and then steadily switch arms and legs. Focus on using your lower back muscles to keep your body balanced and graceful as you slowly transition from the left to right sides. Try 15 reps, 3 sets. Short rest between sets.

LOWER ABS WITH STRAIGHT LEG RAISE Activate the body head to toe with this exercise intense treat for your tummy. Start by: placing the hands behind the head, elbows open wide and left leg pointed and hovering. Exhale during the effort or lifting phase and inhale during the lowering phase. Push the small of your back down into the floor to isolate your abdominal muscles better. Remember to keep your legs as straight as possible. Recommendation for beginners and people with back problems: bend your knees slightly. Try 15 reps, 3 sets. Short rest between sets.

ON THE DOUBLE! REVERSE CRUNCH & BRIDGE The reverse crunch, aka Lower Body Crunch, is one of the best abs exercises for targeting the annoying, hard to reach lower belly pooch. The Bridge is for glutes, hamstrings and core. Make sure that when you do a Reverse Crunch you’re squeezing your core in and out each time. Don’t cheat by letting your upper body, or body’s momentum, do the work that your core should be doing. Start by: lying on a mat with your feet off the ground. Bring your knees up into your mid section, heels near your butt and toes pointed. Have your palms at your side facing down. Keep your hamstrings flexed and knees bent. Roll your hips and thighs toward your chest. Next, lower your legs on the mat like the Bridge exercise and squeeze the bum lifting the pelvis up. Return back to starting position. Try 15 reps, 3 sets. Short rest between sets.
