SABBATHA BAGS MADE IN BALI by Valere I sat down with renowned Indonesian handbag designer Sabbatha Rahzuardi, who says beyond any other moniker, he calls himself simply an artist. From Yjogakarta. He oozes creativity of one who has spent many years nurturing it. Instantaneously, I perceive him as stylishly minimalistic as he is Buddah like in appearance and demeanor. We explored this enigmatic Indonesian brand through the eyes of Sabbatha.
How did you begin designing handbags? I started designing the handbags 8 years ago. I was in France for my economic education and returned back to Indonesia direction Bali in year 2000.
How would you describe your most recent collection? My most recent collection is very eye-catching, very shiny. The brighter you go, the more value you can show to your surroundings.
What was the most difficult lesson you learned through design? My designs are very architectural for some reason. So, I have to try to make a balance between what the customer needs and wants with the idea that I have in my mind. To combine these two elements can be quite tricky.
Your handbags are simultaneously ornate and minimal in equal measure. How do you use these opposing elements in your work? I divide it into two sections. The beads, stones, carving sculptures that I use put those into the more embellished handbags. Which is what I’m known for. When I want to do something more simple, I focus on the details that I can show that you wouldn’t find elsewhere.
What is your design philosophy? I want my designs to be a status. I want something I design to become a symbol for the people carrying my bag. I’m quite known for the details, but since a couple years ago, I started with designing something simpler. What does the word “artist” mean to you? I try to be a trendsetter in designing or creating bags. Sabbatha is one of the most copied brands in Indonesia, especially old collections. What do you start with when you sit down with the intention of creating a collection? Where does it all begin? It starts with my imagination. What I get from people wearing or carrying something, even some movies inspire me. What are some films that inspired you? Films with gothic, roman, greek themes are an inspiration to me. I take the allure of the film, the colors, the details. Then I begin my sketching of the outside and the inside and figure out what we can actually do with the design
Color seems especially important to you in your bags? How do you come up with the various colors you work with? I take risks with my color combinations. I am willing to try anything as lwong as it looks good. Where can we find your Handbags in Bali and elsewhere? Jalan Raya Seminyak, No. 97, Blok K, at Jl Kunti Junction Besides fashion design, what is your one, true passion? Perfume. I would love to create my own perfumes. That is a dream of mine. www.sabbathabali.com

The Old With The New 70s and 90s combo Vintageous: Bonfire of The Trends
by KATIE You look around these days and see some pretty exciting stylage. Lots of color, crop, opposing elements. Opposing elements of the old and the new-ish. I guess my approach to an understanding is trying to learn why this trend of mixing ages has been highly intoxicating to those around me and myself.
allied themselves with a certain street cred in street fashion. However, only in the last decade has the term ‘vintage’ become something valuable, seductively so. Now, here we are re-working old pieces and mixing them with the more contemporary. Its like I’m living and breathing Flashdance, the movie.
It seems what has been occurring lately is this synthesis of two different ages. The style of now is turning out to be some sort of love child of the 70s and early 90s, not to be confused with the late 80s. A different decade people. You get this devil-may-care booties going on, kids these days not bothering to lace up their damn shoes, coupled with high waist denim, then throw a little Venice Beach bra top in bright pink and you’ve got an idea of the whats going viral on the streets.
The trend happening now is combining the old with the new in such a way as to try and create authenticity of style and form that is offset by a synthesized glamourized Pretty Woman outfit. This is exactly why it has the potential to be highly regrettable. So. Will we all be looking back and cringing? Because where one risks, so does one fail.
This synthesis of era is freaky and loads of fun to play with. It’s a mix of rustic and cheesy retro synthetic fusion that is kind of grotesque when taken out of context. This 90s in- your-face neonism, bare-naked sin zones is like the lost soul of fashion. It’s a dance of light and color. This gear towards sparkle mayhem… we are blinded by it. However, this trend is only acceptable when mixed with something of great authenticity, of good reputation, deemed cool by thousands of years of standards and possibly propped up by a highly sought after social system. How can we explain an episode of pop culture that is equally apparently nomadic and free-thinking in its opportunity to spark up change and creativity with a marriage with a equally frenetic grasp at attention seeking. Well, I think we’ve discovered something in the mayhem of self-expression. Or what we think this to be. Perhaps, that’s what this generational fashion is all about. Attention-seeking in both poles of extremism. The Ascetic having babies with Rhianna. Its Burning Man combined with Coachella. New York conjoined with Venice Beach. The solidified coupled with the transitory. As we think it polar by nature, it becomes a part of the cycle of repetition and fusion of fashion. Zen and The Art of Glow Stick Hip Hop Chic. Conclusion. Our self-styled expression is mostly experimentation. Neither good nor bad, just a laboratory affair of sorts. However, always making sure to ground those experiments in something that we recognize as ‘real’ or ‘true’. Because, contrary to the Swedishism, I would venture to guess, not everything beautiful is true. Or genuine for that matter. My proof of this clingy nature towards the old and established style is in the wave of generational obsession with thrift stores. OK. OK, yea, they’ve always been cool. The thrift store junkies

As soon as we think we are getting it right, it turns on us. We look back in 20 years time and are haunted by our glitter-ridden past gone bland. Or perhaps not, we decide we love it and at the age of 60 we start bringing it all back again in one desperate attempt to relive our charged youth. The question is, what sticks and what makes us sick? To me fashion trending is one misrepresentation after another, which avoids the timeless nature of beauty and quality. I’ve been enjoying a love-hate relationship with fashion over the last two decades. Since I opened my closet as a wee toddler and upended the contents of my dresser to which I exclaimed, “I have NOTHING to wear!” So, God only knows why I can’t seem to stop writing about it.

HEALTH
HEART by VERONICA Taking care of your body and mind is essential to maintaining good health and quality of life. So far we have taken the time to learn how to care naturally of different parts of your body. But it is clear that there is an area that, although not seen, plays a key role in the functioning of the perfect machine that is the human body.
These are some substances and elements that will help to take care of your heart: Vitamin E: antioxidant that protects cell membranes and minimizes oxidation produced by cholesterol. Wheat germ oil, sunflower seeds, walnuts, spinach, soybeans, broccoli and tomatoes are sources of it.
The heart is the biological pump that makes blood and containing elements reach everywhere. Taking care of your heart is easy; you just have to take into account three factors: diet, exercise and rest.
Coenzyme Q10: a substance essential for heart cells to produce energy. It helps to consume sardines, tuna, cabbage, spinach and soy oil.
It is the engine of your vehicle, which makes walking and moves you through the world. But most of us hardly think about it, we assume that our heart will work whatever we do. A healthy balanced diet will not only make the heart pump nutrients to all your cells, but also that the highway in which blood travels, the veins, are not clogged by fat and cholesterol promoting venous return to clean any impurities. Exercise is good for all muscles of the body, heart included. Especially aerobic exercise, which will make your heart bigger and stronger, therefore it is more efficient to pump more blood with less effort, resulting in longer life of this muscle. Also resting is a must. No matter how well you nourish yourself and how much exercise you do but if there is no rest, all is useless. Rest is like a reset for the body that prepares you to be ready to begin a new day. You get a refill of energy and your brain becomes more operational.
20
L-Carnitine is an amino acid, also essential for the production of energy, reduce triglycerides. Lamb and beef contain it. Taurine helps strengthen the heart muscle, achieves stability in the rhythm of the heartbeat and improves hypertension. It is found naturally in fish and chicken. The benefits of wine: moderate consumption of red wine helps prevent heart disease: 2 glasses in man and 1 for woman, is recommended because it contains resveratrol, an antioxidant substance that reduces the thickness of the blood. With several simple tips you can maintain the health of your heart and improve your quality of life: Â 1. - Take an active life. Half an hour of sport a day. Aerobic Exercise is essential for your heart and circulatory system to be active. The most common aerobic exercises are running, biking, swimming, pilates, aerobics or fitness. 2. - Avoid consumption or exposure to tobacco. Cigarettes, stress and alcohol is bad combination. Any other drugs further increases the risk for cardiovascular disease.
3. - Maintain a normal blood pressure, levels of which can be modified by diet and physical activity. Low salt intake, increase potassium intake, reduce calories and consume alcohol in moderation. Too much salt causes high blood pressure, a major cause of stroke. 4. - Consume fruits and vegetables, which provide fiber, vitamins and antioxidants that benefit the good work of your heart. Especially recommended are apples, tomatoes and bananas, spinach, carrots or strawberries. The potatoes and broccoli have lots of vitamin C, which is essential to prevent aging and regenerate the immune system. Steamed or baked. Steaming is best method to maintain taste, consistency, color and nutrients. 5. - Limit the intake of saturated and trans fat: red meat and cow’s milk, fried foods, prepared and industrial produced foods. Increase the intake of vegetable fats and reduce animal ones. 6. - Reduce the consumption of sugary drinks and alcohol to reduce the amount of calories. 7. - Include fish and whole grains to your diet. Fiber modestly reduces bad cholesterol levels and promotes satiety. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids include salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, anchovies and swordfish. Try to eat oily fish at least twice a week, and include avocados and nuts to your recipes.
10. - As a general rule, you should be aware of the type of food you eat, the amount of calories and portion sizes. Although some lifestyles cannot be changed easily, you can change small behaviors like spending fewer hours in front of the TV or computer screen, and to devote more hours to walk or exercise. This would contribute to your cardiovascular health. In short, it is easy to take care of the heart and eventually your heart will thank you with less illness and greater ability to go through the daily efforts as the years go. There’s only one heart, take care. And about your heart-emotional issues….not matter how much you run because that is a different story. Green Fisherman Hearty Salad Ingredients: 150 gr of mix organic greens - Fresh spinach, watercress, baby romain, lolo rosso 1 tomato 50 gr of mix seeds & nuts – sunflower seeds, walnuts, black sesame seeds Citrus Vinaigrette – extra virgin olive oil, lime juice, chopped coriander leaves, pinch of sea salt and pepper 150 gr Fresh Tuna Slices Make a bed with the greens, put the sliced tomato, the sunflower and walnuts on top. Grill the tuna as taste, put on top of the salad and sprinkle the black sesame seeds. Mix the vinaigrette ingredients and add when serving.
8.-It is advisable to start a healthy diet and physical activity from the earliest years of life, to prevent future conditions due to overweight. Teach your children how to enjoy healthy lifestyle! 9. - A healthy sex life also helps maintain a healthy heart ;).

ADVINA RATNANINGSIH THE PEARL OF JAKARTA by VALERE ADVINA is big time. I first met the Indonesian beauty during the runway on Martha Tilaar fashion show exclusive. She’s on the cover of magazines (like Harper’s Bazaar, Amica, Femina, Elle and Fauve this month which I interviewed her for). So, it was nice to catch up with this fabulous lady. Read our chat below.
Advina, can you tell us a bit more about you ? Where do you come from? Where do you live? I was born in Jakarta with mixed ethnicity from my parents: Javanese and Dayak, and I grew up in many different cities since I was kid and moved back to Jakarta when i started university 10 years ago. When did you start modeling? I start modeling quite early, around 14 years old as a finalist of elite model look Indonesia in 1999, but because of I have to finish my high school, I stopped for a while and started again after I finished my high school What is it that you like the most about modeling and what is it that you like the less? What I like the most in modeling is I always up to date in trends, I can wear many beautiful dresses from talented designers, and I can explore myself in many different character for the photoshoot and not forget to mention meeting a lot of talented and interesting people. The less I like in modeling is that you constantly have to look good, you have to be able to control your mood even when you are not in one. Also waiting for the show time or shoot to be started can be really tiring. But anyway, I’m a model and that’s my job, I can’t complain about it because I love what I’m doing. What misconception do people have of Modeling? Misconception of people about modeling is that they think all model’s life is so glamour, all about party and easy life. But not for me. I started from zero. I didn’t know anyone when I start my modeling, I worked my ass off so hard to be where what I am now, sometimes I do party because it’s fun, But it’s not a regular thing, Far beyond that, I do live a simple life.
We can see you in almost every fashion shows, what is your feeling being on the catwalk wearing creations of amazing designers ? It’s such an honor to wear many gorgeous outfits in the catwalk first before anyone else when people can only watch it. That’s why I try to give my best to represent all the designer’s creations I have in the fashion show. What fashion means to you? Fashion for me is about how u represent yourself of what u wear from head to toe, it’s about following trends and adding something original that is you. Which photographer do you like to work the most? and why? I have many favorites local talented photographers like Nicoline Patricia, Hakim Satriyo, Glen Prasetya, Advan Matthew, Julius Bramanto, Luki Ali, Arseto, etc. so many in Jakarta! Because they have characters in their work, awesome photos, easy to work with, and they are very professional. Who is your favorite Designer? My international favorite designer is Alexander McQueen. For local, I love Priyo Oktaviano, Sapto Djonoka, Biyan, Denny Wirawan. If you could describe yourself in 5 words, which words would it be? Simple girl who loves modeling, fashion, traveling, diving. Aduh! It’s more than 5 words. Can we make it more? Hehe

SPIRITUALITY
karma KONVERSATIONS Planting Seeds of Change – Part Two
by SWATHIMAA Hello, all! Now that summer is on its way and we can languish unreserved & unabashed poolside, let’s all pull up a lounge chair, get comfy, and continue our chat about how it’s going to take a woman’s heart to save the world. Oh, and it’s appropriate, as Father’s Day is here, that we include the boys a bit more, too… but in the proper context, of course. I’ll go first. Although, women have rather recently acquired a reputation for dramatically and deservedly strutting our stuff, this isn’t about patting ourselves on the back. No. This is about resistance and dissent. Pockets remain, which is ironic considering we’ve spent eons with our feet, mouths, and minds bound. You’d think by now we’d be welcomed to spread our beautiful wings, not just our pretty legs. So, partly, it’s about irony. The majority of resistance to our worldly ascent doesn’t come from the opposite sex. It comes from us. It’s not a generational conflict—our moms or moms-in-law giving us grief for not being good enough. It’s about something more common amongst us. Insecurity. We drown ourselves in it. The thing is, whatever we choose, we can easily be great at. The problem is subtler than that. We are intuitive, ever flowing, unbounded creatures. Yet, to really shine we need to be given boundaries, ways to channel our power, because, when channeled, our power grows exponentially.
36
The thing is, to us, boundaries seem counter-intuitive. If it were up to us, we’d never choose to limit ourselves. Somebody else has to do it. At least, another kind of energy needs to be introduced. And this is where guys come into the picture. We need male energy with its boundary-oriented, logistical, objective perspective. God made Adam first out of necessity. If Eve had come first, you’d never catch her again. Without channels, we’re happily, ecstatically all over the place. Yet, any tendency towards the extreme cuts both ways. There’s value in us accepting the male perspective, yes. But, buying into the idea that the world we live in is primarily, if not solely, ‘objective’—in other words, a Man’s world—is an extreme mistake. By accepting the masculine, non-intuitive, ‘objective’ premise, we objectify ourselves. And, we place our femininity, our love, creativity, strength, wisdom, and selfworth in the hands of characters who, by their nature, must also see us that way. In other words, we let the whole thing get out of hand. Ironically, we did it and still do it for the most intuitive, subjective, anti-objective reasons possible. We do it for love. We do it for intimacy…but call it ‘security’. We do it for sex, letting our creative powers flow…but call it ‘posterity’. The problem is, we took acceptance too far and part of who we are got lost in translation. We turned acceptance of boundaries and balance into a kind of classaction submission. We subverted our own path to bliss.
Men helped, of course, but for the sake of sanity and the possibility of peace on earth, let’s take an honest look at their perspective. When it comes to women, most men are like children in a grown-up world. They’re out of their depth. They don’t understand us. They can’t intellectually fathom our power and the strength of our hearts. We’re a mystery. Fortunately for them— though, in many ways, unfortunate for us—we’re a mystery that’s strong and flexible enough to agree to play by their rules, including the ones that shout: “Little Boys Rule!” We bought into the idea and have been silently kicking and screaming, and revising ever since. But, we’ve reached the far side of the pendulum swing, now, and it’s time to negotiate a new deal. “A tree and all its fruits start with a single seed,” begins a lesson in relationships, found in many ancient spiritual texts. The lesson continues, “The field exists for the sake of the seed. The wind, rain, and sky, too, exist solely for the sake of the seed.” Notice it doesn’t say, “The seed exists solely for…blah blah blah”. Nor anywhere does it say the seed isn’t worth much without all the rest. It says the world exists to bring out the seed’s full glory. The world is its playground, its drawing board.
Objectively, this story seems a bit silly. A seed left on its own is worthless. It NEEDS all the rest or it will eventually wither and die. Pretty much, everybody knows this. But spiritual stories are about deeper truths. The lesson in this is that we must acknowledge and appreciate the inherent beauty and power of both the seed and all the rest. In your life, emulate both the seed and all the rest. Remember that what’s manifested outside, comes from inside first; therefore, if you want to know love—great, amazing, powerful, fantastic love—find it inside of yourself and express the joy of love. Acknowledge and embrace the love that is already in your life, and reciprocate the same and more back. Don’t be selective just practice, practice, practice. Build that channel until it overflows and you will start seeing the reflection of your desired intention, that little seed, grow wild and luscious around you. Plant some seeds today so our posterity can enjoy the forests and fruits of our brilliant light.

BUDOKAN a new and fresh spot
by Rachel Who doesn’t love noodles? I mean seriously, have you ever met anyone who doesn’t? There are a few reasons, among many, why noodles are one of the most loved Asian dishes on Planet Earth. They’re filling, fragrant, delicious and so versatile. Aside from the fact that there are many different types of noodles, it can be combined with almost any ingredient, can be a stir fry or in a soup form. Every Asian country has a traditional noodle dish of its own and all of them are just yummmmm. Opened by true noodle lovers, right in the centre of Canggu, BUDOKAN Intergalactic Sake Bar and Noodle house is THE place to get your hot and spicy noodle soup or a killer stir fry fix. So far, the menu includes Vietnamese Pho Bo, Singapore Laksa, Korean Bulgogi and the Shogun’s Lunchbox - “make your own noodle bowl” option, where you can choose it to be soup or stir fry and you choose the fillings for the type of noodle, which come in Rice Stick, Bihun, Glass Noodles and Udon choices. All the recipes are found and tested by the owners themselves, following comfort home traditions. BUDOKAN chefs are cooking the aromatic dishes on an open flame in an open kitchen style layout. The drink of choice in BUDOKAN bar would be, Sake. There are different varieties of it, you can try a shot or ask for a 300ml bottle. The choice is quite broad, ranging from sweet to dry sake in all its essence spectrum’s. The Sake collection comes from many breweries around Japan from 100-800yr old Sake prefectures. Other alcoholic beverages include, Beer, Wine and top-shelf Spirits including Cognac. 44
However, its not just about Sake & Noodles at BUDOKAN. It is an intergalactic bar after all. FYI - legally registered “intergalactic” business - the owners firmly believe that the cultural and economical relationships between Earth and the rest of the galaxy is not so far away and that one day they will be able to franchise on the Moon and other neighboring planets. The latest breakthrough in “Cold-Fusion” technology deems this very possible, and NASA has scheduled the first flight to colonize MARS prepped and ready to launch by 2023. Apparently, the management of Budokan have applied. With its concrete floor and bar, high and low wooden tables and black metal rails, supporting the mezzanine the look of the first floor is very much contemporary. There are super comfy dark cherry color Chesterfield couches on the second level, wooden floor and table lamps, which gives it a vibe of your friend’s living room or a clubhouse. There are 4 Tv screens showing any Sport ranging from UFC, Boxing, NBA, NRL, AFL, Rudgy, Cricket, Football and Surfing championships, all LIVE or on replay. With the fast wi-fi dedicated line, various artwork on the walls, and special couch for XBOX gamers, doesn’t it seem like a perfect hang out place? BUDOKAN is a new and fresh spot, still in developing process, with things getting done and added along the way. The main idea behind it is simple - friendly vibe, good food and having a bit of fun. And it seems to be working. www.budokansakebar.com www.facebook.com/Budokan.Intergalactic

Fashion Fashion Everywhere!!! How the Consumer reacts... by KATIE Fashion is nothing but a game in which all of us are involved. It is a different matter that the rules of the game may differ from person to person. These so called rules are not something written in any legal document, nor are they broadcasted on the net. Rather during the course of our lifetime we get to learn these by trial and error and sometimes by copying others. If we look into the psychological aspect involved with the fashion business, we will find that people go after fashion for numerous reasons. Some of them may be with the feeling of either being part of a group or in stark contrast being entirely different from the group. Although in both the cases it is the psychology of the consumer that is dictating which fashion trends to adopt and which to reject, the result is as different as two magnetic poles. Let us take the first case, where a consumer wants to be part of a group or we can say the consumer wants to have a sense of belonging. Generally this kind of behavior is seen in college kids, fresh out of school uniforms, with new aspirations and high dreams. This generation comprising of 16-20 year old ones is very eager to adopt to anything new which is happening in the market. They want to look fashionable and are ready to go to any lengths for that purpose. For example the latest shades of nail paints in rainbow colors, layered clothing, body piercing, tattoos and what not. Little do they think of the health hazards, financial relevance or the very basic fact that whether they look OK or not. What they want is that they should be accepted by their peers and treated on an equal level. Nobody wants to be treated as an outcast. This segment can be called as the ATBAGs (About To Be Adults Group). This is also the generation which has been targeted by the marketing teams of various big shot brands of the fashion industry. It is easier to hook the fish in this case, because this segment can get very easily attracted to whatever the advertisements say. Just use the latest hot pop icon or the top favorite celebrity and half of your battle is won. The second kind of consumer is a tricky lot. It comprises of the people in the age group of late 20s and early 30s. Now this segment is the one who has a mind of their own and who would think the pros and the cons before accepting or rejecting any fashion statement. This is the time when consumers start building their own image and identity. The image that they present to the society at large should justify their profession, their personality and to a large extent
46
their individuality. People now become INDIVIDUALS with an independent fashion sense. The psychology here is that they have to be different from their peers so that they can be noticed. This individuality would then be acting like a ladder for both professional and personal reasons. A different approach to this scenario is if we compare the society as a movie and the people there as various actors and actresses. Every actor would have a different role to play in the movie. We would be having a hero, heroine, villain, supporting actors etc. All these people will be required to dress differently according to the part they play. In real life also people play different roles. Be it in the role of a business executive, a homemaker, a doctor, a lawyer, or a teacher. The image that has been portrayed should compliment the role. This segment can be called as the YABIGs (Young Adults Becoming Individuals Group). This fact has been aptly utilized by the fashion industry while planning their marketing moves as well as classifying their product lines. A consumer who is a CEO of a company by profession would obviously go for business suits from maybe Armani, Raymonds, or Louis Philippe. In variance to this a movie star would be dressed more casually and always ahead of fashion.

by SARAH I just came to Bali to do yoga. It looked nice in the pictures, and the teacher training dates worked out. Things didn’t go to go that way, some very surprising things happened, and I didn’t go home. What really changed the course of things was I making two of my dearest friends here within the first week of arriving. Everything that is good about my life here I have them to thank for. Chance encounter no. 1 happened in Mamma Mia. Sharing a table with strangers, it’s what you do in Mamma Mia, I found myself next to Yvonne Pekerti, a local interior designer. After an animated conversation about architecture and design we meet up the very next morning. I love the ‘how about now’ approach to things here, instead of the weeks of planning, cancelling, and double checking that seems to happen at home. Yvonne brought me to all the things in Bali that I really wanted to see, but didn’t know existed - hotels she had designed, local craft workers studios and even very exciting building supply stores. We shared a similar design sensibility and a mutual adoration for Brad Pitt. She gave me local knowledge and insight into the real working Bali behind the tourist veil I may have only seen if I hadn’t meet her. I realised through her the many exciting creative opportunities that Bali could offer me. Chance encounter no. 2 happened at Sugars swimming pool in Ubud where I meet Liz Joy Oakley. As anyone who knows her will tell you ‘Joy’ is her middle name and her way of life. I had studied textile design in art school, Liz had studied fashion. We compared notes and bonded over how tough design school was, and how mean our tutors were. Liz works with the Safe Childhood Foundation here in Bali (www. safechilhoods.org), running The Sewing Project, a project designed to employ the mums of the children who attend the Foundation’s Slum School. She teaches the mums how to make beautiful things and helps them to earn a living. She also runs the Foundation’s ethical store, Charity by Design on Jalan Gootama in Ubud.

So i got involved very casually to begin with, helping design a refit for the store. Later I was introduced to a much bigger project, The Sanctuary, a Safe-Eco-Village for children rescued from the sex industry and trafficking networks. It was an interesting coincidence that the only other major charity work I’ve been involved in was a similar project by the organisation Preda in the Philippines. I’m helping out with the design fit out, and researching the sustainable options. We’re working with local companies like Kaltimber, that make beautiful furniture out of recycled timber (www. kaltimber.com). This is a really special project, and one of a kind. As the founder Natalia Perry says ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and this is a very special village. We’re creating a village like environment for the children to live and recover in. It will be deliberately un-institutional - no straight lines, no dormitory like rooms, minimal concrete. Many of the buildings are reclaimed Joglos scattered around a beautiful garden complete with horses and chickens. It’ll be a magical space to play, to recover, plant flowers, and most importantly to be children again. I urge everyone to watch this 30 second pitch for the project, dig deep and ask how can you help? You can also donate through the website. http://vimeo.com/59817038. So thanks to Yvonne and Liz, I didn’t leave Bali after my yoga teacher training ended. It felt like there was too much for me to do here. I’m sure you’re thinking wouldn’t we all do that if we didn’t have to earn money and pay bills. Here’s were I go back to the beginning of my story. I worked as a freelance interior designer in my home town of Dublin, Ireland. The country has been hit hard by the economic recession. So
when I discovered a wide gap in my work schedule last Winter I had a notion to escape the Irish winter, to go somewhere warm, and get my yoga teacher certification. My greatest asset was my home, Victorian cottage I poured a lot of love and work into. You can read the interesting story of that, which started with a house fire on this link. www. apartmenttherapy.com/sarahs-sunny-dublin-delight-housetour-180707. It’s available for short term rent on Airbnb. www.airbnb.com/rooms/690119. It’s design had been recognised by publications like The Sunday Times and 25 Beautiful Homes, which gave it a high rental value. It gave me enough of an income to cover my mortgage at home and allow me a modest income to live on in Bali. I’m so grateful for the luxury of this time I’m not wasting a minute of it. In between everything else I’m designing an evening course called ‘Transform your Home’ to teach people how to make their homes work for them in a way that is sustainable, budget friendly and life enhancing, the opposite of much of the pretentiousness that people associate with interior design. I’m running it in Dublin later in the year. Who knows maybe I could run it here in Bali.
I guess one of the reasons I can be involved in so much is that I don’t have to do much of the regular stuff that takes up so much of my time at home. I’m living in a guest house, so I haven’t made my own bed since I got here. Likewise my time isn’t taken up with laundry and grocery shopping. Friends at home are very envious of this side of Bali life. This month I did leave Ubud to go back to my yoga school (http://recharge-retreats.com/ytt/). They run an amazing YTT programme in Candidasa. I’m currently in the middle of helping out as an assistant to their current course, so in addition to everything I’m hoping to work as a yoga teacher later this year. Almost since I’ve arrived here I’ve never felt like a tourist here, which is nice, and I’ve never been interested in doing tourist like things. I laugh when I read my friends at home refer to my ‘time out traveling’. I move within about a kilometre radius of Jalan Hanoman - meeting people, designing for the Sanctuary project, practicing yoga, or you’ll find me in Atman Cafe with my head in my laptop. I’m so busy here that last month I went home to Dublin just for a holiday and some rest!

Timeless High Fashion Trends intemporel
The world of fashion changes every day and often it is necessary to get rid of the old to make room for the new. Many influential factors influence changes in trends and its a rare instance, especially in high fashion, when a trend can and does last forever. Timeless trends that will always be relevant in high fashion are equivalent to term diamonds in the rough. True red comes in many not so trendy forms, but it will be a staple in high end fashion until the end of time. Why red? Its the Marilyn Monroe of colors and considered a power color with a strong sexual influence for passion. Lets look at the facts: its the color of fire, the common rose, hearts, passion, love as well as embodying many more other symbolic meanings. In China, it symbolizes beauty and celebration and it is the color brides most commonly wear on their wedding day. Did I mention that its one of the top colors chosen by men? Its true Venus will always be rising in the high fashion world. While on the subject of power, lets add the well tailored pant suit. There are uncountable variations by numerous high fashion designers but there is one perfect fit for every woman. A good tailor is needed but not necessarily required. Women are powerful and a high end pant suit can be worn for almost any occasion with the right decorated accessories to accent. Try utilizing this trend if there is a powerful message that needs to be conveyed.

A staple piece of jewelry in high end fashion is the right hoop earrings. This accessory will never go out of style. Whether you like silver, gold, big or small, find the perfect pair that fits you. Getting a few variations is a must. Jackie O, god rest her stylish soul, received millions of dollars in diamonds and jewels from prestigious places and people, but her favorite were a pair of petite double hooped dangle earrings that she got for less than $100 and wore most of the time. She was photographed wearing them on numerous occasions. Its simply impossible to settle for just any hoop earring and there are many styles to choose from so its important to take precious time to find the perfect pair. When you do, you’ll be soul mates. As for me, Im going to be buried in mine. The Clutch Purse is the queen bee of handbags. Which is very suitable considering the style was introduced to high society fashion during the Victorian Era. The fashion world had decided that the clutch was no longer in style and it diminished for decades until WWII. This was due to the shortages in materials and rationing. Since the clutch required fewer materials, it reemerged in the fashion world. They are dainty and they add a feminine touch to any style for any occasion.

Aries In the lead up to the month’s lunar eclipse in an adventurous part of your chart heart and mind are also coming together in a way that is challenging your excuses, so that by the time you’re ready to take some bold risks of faith there are no more excuses to hide behind. With your confidence returning there are no more excuses for staying stuck in a fashion rut. Taurus For the first time in 12 years the Sun returns to your sign and takes you into a new solar year with Jupiter, planet of luck already here. While Jupiter returned to your sign during your birthday month last year, your birthday month was already underway whereas today, with a wealth of experience under your belt, your new solar year begins with lucky Jupiter energy already in play. With heart and mind already engaged it’s time to start this powerful new solar year the way you want it to continue. Gemini As the Sun leaves your sign and wraps up your birthday month he won’t quite close the door leaving Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos behind to ensure you’re fully committed to the journey ahead. Not due to leave for another 10 days Mars is giving you the courage and the confidence to not only open new doors but kick them right off their hinges. In the meantime, there are some special developments on the income and work fronts. Cancer This month marks the start of an important chapter in your current solar year and in your year as a whole, the day that a month long watershed period that separates the past from the future begins. As the Sun returns to your sector of subconscious thinking, imagination and review to begin wrapping up and processing your current solar year, he’ll find he’s not alone, with a lot of old doors being closed, ahead of the major new doors due to open up next month. Leo On the same month that the Sun leaves your career sector pressure on Pluto and your work sector is likely to be peak, in a way that gets everything out in the open. Yet what on paper looks to be a fairly challenging day on the professional front is in fact likely to represent a turnaround, for as Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos becomes the only planet left in your career sector, he thrives on challenge, using it as fuel to engage your professional passions and fighting spirit. Virgo As the Sun leaves an adventurous part of your chart he returns to not only find Venus, Mercury and lucky Jupiter already here but the Moon in your income sector. With a nose for money kicking in just hours before the Sun returns and developments already taking place on the career front, as the solar spotlight takes in your professional situation, all you’ll see are options. This is when what has been building behind the scenes comes onto centre stage.
70
Libra As the Sun leaves your financial sector there is likely to be a shift in attitude, for this leaves Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos behind to tie up loose ends and he’s ready to do that with a blow torch and a sledge hammer. As the gloves come off and especially with some clear financial objectives and a smart head for money already banked, you’re no longer content to pussyfoot around things. It’s game on and you’re calling the shots. Scorpio As the Sun wraps up his month long visit to your relationship sector, while this is something he’ll do at this time every year, chances are he’s left you with the biggest relationship wakeup calls you’ve had in decades. With Mars staying behind to tie up loose ends, you’re left with a clear sense of authenticity and of what you want from your relationships and what they need from you. In the meantime, the Sun shifts the solar spotlight onto your financial situation. Sagittarius While some of the tension of recent weeks is easing back life is going to be just as busy, at the same time that some real success or breakthroughs are possible, especially on the work front. In a week where it’s more important than ever to look the part time is likely to be your scarcest commodity, with a need for organization and good time management. Capricorn Just a few days before the Sun joins Venus, Mercury and Jupiter in your work sector, throwing the spotlight on some major developments building, the Moon returns to your career sector, ensuring your professional instincts are sharp and on the money. While Mars will continue to keep your romantic and creative passions fuelled for the next 10 days, already your professional year is moving into overdrive. Aquarius In what is one of the toughest and most challenging months of the year the Sun’s return to your romantic and creative sector today will go a long way towards lightening the load. While this is unlikely to change anything, still leaving you dealing with the same issues you’ve been dealing with, this changes the filter that you see everything through. All of a sudden things look a little brighter, with a chance to start putting the fun back into life. Pisces As the Sun leaves your communication sector he leaves you with a new level of authenticity and as the Moon wraps up his monthly visit to your relationship sector it’s your relationships that are the first to benefit. As the Sun shifts the solar spotlight onto home and family matters Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos will stay behind to ensure that now you know what you want from your communications that you’re able to push through any remaining barriers.

What’s a girl got to do to get rid of her boyfriend around here? I put on 5 pounds, refused to be anyone but myself and didn’t want to have sex every time he wanted to. I mean, I’m ready for a new one, but this one just won’t go away… Anyway, we’ve got way more interesting things to discuss. Everyone’s favorite musician has gone through five boys in the last two weeks- what’s she looking for? Love? HA HA I was at my favorite spa/salon the other week, getting my muff sculpted (70s are back in a big way, but with a twist) and I overheard a certain Russian complaining about her husband… and the people she works with. Turns out everything is not as it seems. I was also out the other week at La Favela, and saw everyone very very drunk, and behaving very very badly. I see you! You really should consider getting some help… You have a family now and does drinking really help all that? You can’t stay drunk forever… or can you? Do you know anyone, anyone, whose relationship you would love to have? I mean… fantasy is great… but let’s all get real here. Spa and shopping and the gym are the only things that really give back in an unconditionally loving way. What is it with the “I love you’s?” So many boys and girls cycling through the beautiful island and throwing that word around like its nothing. If you don’t mean it, just save it for your dog and Monsieur Spoon. Also, have you seen the new art and shit at Single Fin? Like, it looks really good. A certain high-paid international supermodel here I getting kind of fat. I mean, has she even ever heard of ice for dessert? Lemon for lunch? How is she even getting work anymore? Thanks God for liquefy, otherwise bitch would NOT be getting paid. So I went on a trip with a new friend, Janet, recently to Singapore. I met her out one night at Potato Head. She’s from Australia, but she’s kind of poor. Anyway, I paid for her trip and we had a great time partying and partying and wondering around Sing. Then, when we went to leave, my Cartier necklace was gone. I was devastated. My daddy had given it to me on my 16th birthday. I suspected my new friend Janet, but just tried to deny it. We packed up all our luggage and went to the airport. We got there, and everything was fine, but when we got to the baggage screening she panicked. All of a sudden she got sick, and had to run to the bathroom. I walked in on her, and there she was, wrapping MY Cartier necklace in tissue and about to throw it in the bin rather than fess up to stealing it. I took her aside and told her I was going to turn her into the authorities. She freaked out, I took my necklace back, the ticket I bought her and ripped it up, leaving her to fend for herself in Singapore. And that’s how it works, bitches! Don’t fuck with me and have a great month. Love you!

FIT & TIPS SPORT
By Mel
Melt Your Middle We all want a toned and flat stomach. No surprise. Many women and men are still relying on crunches to get it, we want to make one thing clear: Crunching is not the most effective abs workout. “Crunches work only the muscles on the front and sides of your abdomen, but it’s important to target all the muscles of the core to get more defined abs—including lower back, hips, and upper thighs. Core exercises like the plank help train muscles to stabilize the spine and pelvis so you can avoid back pain and improve posture. Mix up simple crunches for these three super-effective abs exercises. Add Cardio training! Check your blood pressure and pulse in a pharmacy to make sure you are ready for HIIT. (HIIT= High-Intense-Interval Training) 20sec high speed followed by 40second slow motion, repeat 6-12times Follow this interval-training program three times a week after your Stomach work out. It’ll fire up your metabolism and burn off the fat that’s hiding your abs. Intervals are short bursts of maximum-intensity effort—you’re doing it right if you can’t carry on a conversation—separated by periods of easy-pace recovery. For this interval workout, remember to include an easy 3- to 5-minute warm up and cool down. You can run, bike, or use the cardio machine of your choice.
Reserve Crunch The reverse crunch is focus on the rectus abdominals, your lower abs. With this move, you’re curling the hips off the floor, so you’ll feel this in the lower part of the abs. The key to this move is to avoid swinging the legs to raise the hips. This is a small, subtle move, so you only need to lift your hips a few inches off the floor.
Plank The plank exercise rank is a great way to build endurance in the abs and back, as well as the stabilizer muscles. This move is also great for building strength for push-ups an exercise that requires quite a bit of core strength.
Long arm crunches The long arm crunch is one of the effective abs exercise, changing the traditional floor crunch by straightening the arms behind you. This adds a longer lever to the move, adding a bit more challenge and difficulty.
How to: 1. Lie on the floor and place hands on the floor or behind the head with palms facing up. 2. Bring the knees in towards the chest until they’re bent to 90 degrees, with feet together or crossed. 3. Contract the abs to curl the hips off the floor, reaching the legs up towards the ceiling. 4. Lower and repeat for 3 sets of 15-20 reps. 5. It’s a very small movement, so try to use your abs to lift your hips rather than swinging your legs and creating momentum.
How to: 1. Lie face down on mat resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor. 2. Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows. 3. Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels. 4. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your rear end from sticking up in the air or sagging in the middle. 5. Hold for 20 to 60 seconds, lower and repeat for 3-5 reps. 6. For more challenge lift one leg, hold 10seconds and slowly change the leg.
How to: 1. Lie on a mat and extend the arms straight out behind the head with hands clasped, keeping the arms next to the ears. 2. Contract the abs and lift the shoulder blades off the floor. 3. Keep the arms straight and avoid straining the neck. If you feel neck pain, take one hand behind the head while keeping the other arm extended. 4. Lower and repeat for 3 sets of 15-20 reps. 5. You can add intensity by holding a light dumbbell if you need more of a challenge.
