– EDITOR’S NOTE –
“To inspire and to be inspired”
So, August has been and gone and last month was successful for Fauve and we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support. We are really pleased that you clearly appreciate what we are putting out here for you. September is ‘fashion month’ here at Fauve. Now, I personally am fairly ambivalent when it comes to such matters. I like to think I’m not sartorially challenged as such, but when it comes to fashion, I’m a self-confessed “if it fits well and doesn’t cost a fortune then I’ll buy it” kinda guy.
FAUVE ADVICE: All Fashion Editorial images, created by an array of photographers and creative teams, printed within Fauve Magazine can also be viewed in their HIGHEST QUALITY online at www.fauvemagazine.com. That said, we know that many of you are interested in the world of fashion, and therefore I hope you find September an interesting month on the site and printed version. Contributors will be giving their view on a range of fashion-related issues as well as sharing some of their biggest fashion faux pas. Feel free, as always, to add to the discussions yourself, either below the articles or on Twitter. We love to hear from you – after all, it’s you we write these things for. xxx Fauve
– INTERVIEW / DESIGNER –
LOUISE
BAMBOO BLONDE
by KATIE Bamboo Blonde has become one of the most ubiquitous labels in Bali. Recognized as one of the largest and most successful brands launched on the island of the gods, and is now in Jakarta. We interviewed Louise, the owner and creator, the woman behind the label to find out more about what sparked this creative genius.
Can you tell me a little bit about the girl (hypothetically), who wears your clothes? We are trying to please everyone really…being based in Bali with such a transient customer base and now stores in Jakarta means that our range is very broad. We definitely have our work cut out for us! I guess we design for the playful, creative, fashion driven girl who believe that looking good is feeling good How did you begin your label? After wholesaling and manufacturing for 15 years the obvious next step was retail and the label Bamboo Blonde was born. How did Bamboo Blonde grow into the brand it is today? I really don’t know how we got here? I truly believe that the creative energy that surrounds me in the work place and my life on the island of Bali has made it all possible.
– 11 –
Where do you get your style inspiration? My lifestyle in Bali really dictates what I can wear…casual and comfortable rules but like most girls I love to dress up when the occasion arises. What do you attribute your success to? Hard work, a great team and a can ‘do’ attitude…I don’t really like the word no. What is next on the horizon? We have just launched our website and are working on the online store to launch before Christmas. Focusing on expanding into Java and key areas of Bali. More stores, More photo shoots, More product, More everything… www.bambooblonde.com

Lollipops AND BJs by KATIE Gone are the days when female sexuality was revered, and painted onto walls of cathedrals, when sexual revolution was about empowerment, strength, and there existed female ball-breakers. Actively taking part in the act of sex, whatever act it was. When did little girl voices, Barbie hair extensions, pigtails, catholic schoolgirl uniforms, (onesies even- of this I am guilty) become sexy. Oh yeah….Hit Me Baby One More Time. Thanks Britney. I was 14, I was convinced she rocked. Before Kevin Federline, the head shave and the bi polar mental breakdown. A global market stole a young girls sexuality and used it for their own fancy. If there was ever a great example of a sexual travesty as bad as this, this would be it. Call it a cultural rape. Sure she got rich and famous. But what did she trade in?
I’d memorize her dances with my girlfriends on sleepovers . And yes, try and sexualize myself into a girl/ woman, a chick, a chickadee…. barely able to go to the mall alone and already discovering how I could utilize my innocence to distract men. We learn so young, when we are so fresh. And then we get an age, when we are forced to figure out what our sexuality means. Because we’ve had so many strange, bizarre interpretations force-fed back to us, we have no idea. Cause I sure as hell didn’t know. What I feel to be true is that Culture has infantilized sex. Industry, specifically porn, has made billions off of women pretending to be girls. Yes. It’s true. Culture has also infantilized women. How infinitely erotic is it to see a girl sucking off a lollipop. A child’s candy, no doubt, that’s been sexualized. How fascinating. And gross. And doesn’t it make you uncomfortable to even think about it.
– 22 –
The Japanese culture found girly sex extraordinarily appealing. Look at Hello Kitty, check out a couple Japanese films, way too many awkward moments with young girls and old men. Its not by accident, you want to turn away while watching it. SO, we chastise the Japanese for their sordid molestation of female undies. Hence the boom in used girls underwear being sold from vending machines. Doesn’t get any more fetishistic than that. But the western world does the same. But because its our culture, we have been more easily manipulated to think that its normal. I was given the topic, Lollipops and Blowjobs and all I can think about is raging against the machine of male perversion. Oh dear. And now, despite my anti-nihilist rant, I still feel as if I’m left in the cold with my dick in my hand. Questions? Comments? Money?

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR... KIDNEYs Artichokes, grapes and apples are also very diuretic. Celery, meanwhile, combats the kidney stones.
by VERONICA Your kidneys are your major body purifiers; they help to eliminate the toxins. They are also responsible for expelling substances that can be discarded and are not useful to your body. They purify the blood, synthesize and process hormones, help to control your blood pressure and the red blood cells production, among other things. Every day, they filter about 190 liters of blood! If the kidneys do not work properly, disease occurs due to a progressive accumulation of toxins, water and salts. This malfunction can also alter the formation of red blood cells, the metabolism of bones and provoke flaws in the regulation of blood pressure. Food for kidneys This is a very sensitive organ to food and beverage consumption so there are many foods and home remedies that improve its function. Watermelon is considered the fruit of the kidney, its juice helps cleanse the tissues and blood, but should be consumed as fresh as possible. Furthermore, it is a very diuretic fruit.
Include citrus or acidic fruits in the morning like guavas, cranberries, oranges, lemons, etc. Avoid white sugar. Try to include in your daily diet fresh vegetable juice (freshly made), alfalfa and celery are particularly recommended. Whole grains should not be missed in your diet. During years, and hopefully all your life, your kidneys will filter your blood removing salts, toxins and anything harmful that enters into your system. So they deserve a rest and a natural cleansing once a year will help to keep them in optimum working condition. Parsley. Take a handful of parsley, preferably organic, and wash very well. Cut it into small pieces and boil in one liter of water for ten minutes. Let cool, strain and pass it to a bottle that you can keep in the refrigerator. It is advised to take a glass per day to remove salts and toxins accumulated in the kidney through urine. Also, parsley has many other beneficial properties. WARNING: NOT SUITABLE for pregnant and lactating mothers. Apple Cider Vinegar is an old traditional remedy used to cleanse the kidneys naturally, as it contains potassium helping the kidneys to clean deeply. Mix 6 ounces of water (170 ml)
– 24 –
with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per 50 pounds of your own weight (50 pounds ~ 23 kg). This should be done for 2 days, 3 times per day before each meal. Take a break for 4 days and repeat. We may also use natural treatments to prevent or to help dissolving kidney stones. Fucus seaweed (known also as black tang, rockweed, bladder fucus, sea oak, etc.) is very effective in dissolving kidney stones, taken daily as a food or in pill format. High in iodine, not recommended if taking a thyroid treatment. Parsley. Pour half teaspoon of fresh parsley in a cup of boiling water. Add a tablespoon of lemon juice and one of olive oil. Drink this preparation daily for a week. Nettle. Taking two to four cups of nettle infusion yields a very good diuretic effect to your kidneys and helps to prevent the formation of stones. Grapes are extremely diuretic, since they have an exceptional amount of water and potassium salt. A remedy for kidney stones crisis is to eat half kilo of grapes a day avoiding skin and seeds. Celery is very effective in preventing kidney stones and should be consumed regularly to prevent their formation.

The kidney is one of the organs most punished by our actual stressful lifestyle. Despite its importance, not everyone knows they works, what can damage them or that most kidney diseases are preventable. Some general good habits can help you to keep healthy kidneys; this is an easy-to-follow Decalogue: 1 - Stay online and active. Walking, running or biking helps keep blood pressure under control, thereby decreasing the risk of chronic kidney disease. 2 - Control blood glucose levels. About half of people with diabetes develop some degree of renal damage, so it is important to conduct regular analysis.
3 - Monitor blood pressure because hypertension is the major risk factor for chronic kidney disease. 4 - Eating healthy and keeping balanced weight help on controlling hypertension and diabetes. Lower your salt intake: no more than one small teaspoon per day. You can use to spice up your cooking natural herbs like parsley, pepper or spices like curry. Try to avoid processed foods. 5 - Hydrate with water. A liter and a half to two liters per day is an appropriate amount. It helps the purifying function of the kidneys, removing excess salts, urea and toxins. A lack in water consumption favors kidney diseases and urinary tract infections.
– 25 –
6 - Better not to smoke. Smoking decreases blood flow to the kidneys and increases by 50 percent the risk of kidney cancer. 7 - Do not take medicines without consultation. Improper or excessive medications, especially anti-inflammatory, analgesics or antihistamine can impair kidney function 8 - Rest well, avoiding insomnia and excessive stress. 9 - Keep away from polluted air, especially lead. Frequent or prolonged inhalation of solvents, toxic paints, acetone, cleaning products, etc., can inflame the kidneys. 10 - Constant emotional states of irritation, criticism or disappointment deeply affect this organ. Stay cool :)

karma KONVERSATIONS There’s Nothing As Sweet As Soul Candy by SWATHIMAA For most, the sweet songs of summer have reached their natural, autumnal end. But, not so for those of us lucky enough to live and breathe in the delicious, sundrenched joys of Bali all-year-round. For us, the sweet tooth continues. Yet, some may say too much of a good thing isn’t really, well…good. As we sit together, gazing lovingly upon our beach of choice, this seems a fine topic for discussion. I’ll go first. India’s 7,000-year-old contribution to natural health care, Ayurveda, says there are 6 ‘tastes’ each of us need in our lives to feel fulfilled on a daily and ongoing basis: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. A dash of this, a pinch of that, and life is bliss. This statement doesn’t only refer to the stuff we choose to put in our mouths, however. It’s also about what we feed our hearts and minds.
– 26 –
– SPIRITUALITY –
Proportion matters, as in all things, so those who argue against an overabundance of sweets make a valid point. But, the bigger inference here is that an over-abundance of any of the 6 tastes isn’t good for us, no matter how much we may prefer one over the other. Knowing this— or at least agreeing to it in theory— the most important question is not… how on earth can I find the right balance for myself, you know, the one that brings fulfillment? The better question is…why is it so hard to? First off, the wise ones who created Ayurveda discovered that we each have a natural…underline NATURAL…tendency to go out of balance, meaning: if you like sweets (or sweetness) you’ll make a habit of it and, eventually, may find your wardrobe filled with only sweatpants and kaftans and your friends treating you like you’re Saccharine. Then again, if you prefer ‘sour’, you’ll naturally gobble down yoghurt whenever you can; and, just as likely, complain about it after, revealing the sourpuss you’ve become. A preference for all things ‘pungent’ isn’t just about getting to the point where you put chili on everything; it likely means taking your passions to a hot-and-heavy boil and beyond. For most people, life is already too ‘bitter’, ‘salty’, and ‘astringent’ but not everyone would agree. “Most people” might include everyone who has ever been heartbroken, or felt they failed, or thought they were unfairly undermined; but, we all know people who keep setting themselves up for a fall, get into the same kind of bad relationship over and over again, and take every opportunity to talk about it ever after.
These aren’t acquired tastes. We nurture them…naturally. Going out of balance isn’t hard work for any of us. It’s easy as pie. It’s the easiest thing in the world to let our natural tendencies and habits turn into addictions or obsessions. As disheartening as it sounds, the logical one-word solution to all this would be ‘discipline’. But, sadly, we probably ought to add 2 more: ‘hard work’. Spiritually speaking, though, this isn’t true. It isn’t even very deep logic, not if it implies that the best course of action is to go against our own nature. If we’re going to include discipline and hard work in a real solution, the context can’t be about imposing structure on your nature, it’s got to be about revealing the deeper and deepest truths of your nature and nurturing and feeding them. The problem is, when we think of the greatness of our ‘true’ nature, for the most part, we think of it as something conceptual or esoteric— nice to contemplate or theorize about but unreal (or unrealistic). It’s the negative aspects of ourselves that we think of as real. No one in her right mind would honestly accept and/or promote her own divinity. Divinity, especially our own, is too far removed from reality. Anyone who says otherwise is deluding herself or trying to delude the rest of us. On the surface, even the premise of Ayurveda seems to be a kind of proof of this when it says we all have a natural tendency towards some sort of lifedemeaning, mental/emotional, and physical addictions. In other words, we’re all born broken.
– 27 –
But, anyone past puberty—or in the throws of it, for that matter— ought to recognize that things aren’t always the way they seem on the surface. “There are 6 ‘tastes’ each of us need in our lives to feel fulfilled on a daily and ongoing basis,” says Ayurveda. That implies…actually, it’s more than an implication, it’s a declaration, that the essence of our nature is to feel fulfilled. Fulfillment is our most natural state of being. According to Ayurveda, all of life—every level of it, including the mental, emotional, and physical— contributes the 6 ‘tastes’ for the sake of our fulfillment. As a natural health care system, Ayurveda is preventative medicine, not just curative—only resorted to when negative symptoms arise after the fact because we’ve over-indulged our habits. It presents us with medicinal ways to use Life as candy for the soul. Ultimately, the best medicine is to feed the soul directly. The ancient great souls, who discovered the means to do just that, also offered us Ayurveda along the way, as both a support for those inspired to find the truth of their own divinity as well as for those seeking to manage the negative habits that structure most of their problems anyway. The quickest, most profound, and successful technique of them all— the real Soul Candy—is meditation. With that, everything else is a piece of cake.

KEPSIBEL
MODEL OF THE MONTH It’s time to select another super sexy girl as our Model of the Month. This month, we’ve chosen Kepsibel, the 20-year-old British/Australian model, has quickly become an It-girl of today’s fashion scene since she began modeling. We were fortunate to sit down with Kepsibel to discuss her ambitious career in modeling. Her interview can be found below.
What has been your favorite job so far? No favorites, any job that gives me the opportunity to work with passionate, energetic people is already too good to be true. What is your dream modeling job? Maybe a fragrance campaign? I’m not sure – a chance to be part of something big, and create longevity! How do you deal with all the traveling required to be a model? How do you cure jet-lag? Traveling is fine, it’s part of the fun. And cure jet lag with a bit of sleep.
How old are you and where are you from? I’m 20, with an English mother and Australian father but have lived in Bali for most of my life! How did you start modeling? I’m not even entirely sure, I started modeling as a child – I was only 5 or 6! What was your first big break in the industry? Have I had it yet?
When you’re not busy modeling, what are some of your favorite things to do? I love cooking, spending time with friends and family. I love dancing and yoga, and having playtime! If you weren’t a model, what would you want to do? That’s one of the best things about being a model, you can be a model AND more, so I won’t have to choose! But I’d like to be working in a creative industry – film, fashion, art.
– 29 –
What’s your favorite snack? I don’t even know where to being… Banana chips? Toasted seaweed! Dried fruit! Mainly salty snacks, I don’t really have a sweet tooth. Where is your favorite place to travel? Everywhere! I love traveling! I love the feeling I get when I’m on the plane on the way home to Bali. I love going to new places and returning to my favorites. At the moment I’m dying to check out Shanghai and Hong Kong, it’s a part of the world I’ve never seen before. What is your all time favorite movie and why? This is so difficult! There are too many, but I think I’ll go with the Lion King. It’s got singing and dancing, funny moments, sad moments, a moral story, a happy ending and Jeremy Irons. 5 words that describe yourself? Exuberant, silly, giraffe, nquisitive, sausage.

Prada’s Sweet Candy
by SULEMAN Starring Lea Seydoux and codirected by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, Prada’s mini-trilogy for its Candy L’Eau fragrance proves that fashion films can be much more than the moving print campaigns that have come to typify the genre. If only there were more fashion films like these. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=OnsXlxYiH6c Three months ago, over the course of four days, Prada released three short films to promote its Candy L’Eau fragrance. Co-directed by acclaimed Hollywood directors Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, the minitrilogy — an evocative tale of a pretty Parisian girl caught in a love triangle, set to catchy French retro-pop — quickly spread across the Internet and was picked up by a number of large media outlets. Thus far, over 170,000 viewers have seen the films, as well as a director’s cut and a making-of featurette, on YouTube. The success of the video series reflects Prada’s solid decision to commission seasoned directors (and hire actual actors) to create a snappy narrative film, a welcome
departure from the uninspiring, storyless fashion films — often shot by stills photographers (or their assistants) and based on behindthe-scenes footage captured on the backs of print campaigns — which, unfortunately, have come to typify the genre. The Candy L’Eau films feature rising French actress Lea Seydoux as a cheeky beauty, courted by two anxious suitors in skinny suits and stylishly wild coiffures. In the first two episodes, the two young men are haplessly vying for the girl’s affection, while in the third segment (a year later) the threesome seems to have settled into a more or less content, albeit unconventional, relationship. At three and a half minutes, the director’s cut of the film — which joins all three episodes — is longer than most fashion films (which have been shrinking in recent seasons to match short attention spans) but nonetheless manages to engage viewers thanks to a playful storyline, inspired by the new wave classic Jules et Jim, and strong acting. Obvious attention was also paid to lighting, editing and sound, all of which indicates the assured hand of real film directors.
– 44 –
Among other films, Wes Anderson is the revered director of featurelength hits including The Royal Tenenbaums and last year’s Moonrise Kingdom, and the Candy L’Eau trilogy bears some of those films’ trademarks, namely precise compositions, elaborate sets and a quirky plot, driven with unforced comic charm. Most importantly, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously, which cannot be said of most fashion films. Instead, with its breezy, almost offhand, well-paced storytelling — at once retro and of-the-moment — the film taps into a basic human preoccupation with romance, rendered with humour, wit and visual flair. If only there were more fashion films like this one.

LA FAVELA SHANTY CHIC!
by KATIE TRUMAN Just when you think Seminyak had done it all, and your jaw had dropped low enough, sizzling new darling on the block, restaurant-bar La Favela, brings the house down (literally) …… Spectacular. Cavernous. Seriously eclectic. Chaotically cluttered yet immaculately executed. A divine assault on the senses. Mind- blowing design (the night I’m there, I overhear three sets of tourists declare La Favela one of the most amazing restaurantbars they’d ever seen on their travels). And lashings of fun. Just what you’d expect from the talented Euro-trio – Spaniard Gonzalo, Frenchwoman Sandra and Italian, Luigi – that brought Bali impossibly cool La Plancha and La Barca and imminent addition, La Laguna.
“What’s your concept here?” I enquire. “There isn’t one, it’s an experience,” fires back Signor Luigi, a live-wire with the energy of a Duracell bunny. “Why La Favela?” (essentially, Brazilian urban shantytowns) “It’s everything Latin-American South America and Mediterranean, for the family, community and sharing……” and so on. Maybe I should stop shooting questions and just “experience,” which isn’t exactly difficult here. I’m sure everyone in town tries to outdo each other on design, but La Favela wins hands down. A joint team effort and with unbelievable attention to detail, everything within La Favela is either vintage sourced, recycled or created and designed in-house.
– 46 –
The sprawling, buzzy section at the rear is a self-landscaped, tropical rainforest wonderland (are we really on downtown Jalan Oberoi?); Amazon-like with banana plants, palms and lush foliage adorned with multi-sized lanterns and craftily camouflaging varied seating arrangements. Centre-stage, a miniature waterfall comes inhabited by large tortoises. This all matches the jungle-style street entrance of timbered footpath running over gushing water.
– SPOTLIGHT –
Off here are several stunning subthemed dining sections. These include a dimly-lit, submarine-like “New York” room with romantic tables for two and the refined “Cigar Room”, with exposed brickwork and lengthy recycled wood dining table, surrounded by a stash of vintage artifacts including a pushbike suspended up in the beams to an old gramophone and dentist chair! Arguably, the punto fuerte are three themed private dining chambers, low-ceilinged and individually styled with exquisite indigenous details: “Mexico,” “Poor “ and “Grand Mamma” – the latter, evocative of a Latino front parlour shrine to Catholicism. The vast, candle-lit, loungey section at the front reveals more bare brickwork walls with low ceilings covered in metallic panels (originally used by Dutch Colonials on house exteriors to declare their presence) and a veritable jumble of decor and furnishings, anything from Conquistador suit of armour to Favela gang member photo shrines and self- designed sumptuous leather couches. Coming soon, a Tequilleria housed in an old Combi VW van casually discarded amongst the trees and two upper floors – but holey-moley, this all should suffice! Catering to singletons, loved-ups, groups of friends and families, interiors are a surreal fusion of New York
City brownstone refinement , South American shanty chic and organized homely chaos found in ………a Favela. Santa Maria, you could almost forget the food! But don’t. Lending a stamp of authenticity, Peruvian chef Marco heads-up the kitchen and introduces his national dish, Ceviches (which here, includes Chita, with an Asian twist of red snapper fillet.) There’s also Carpacci and Tartare dishes, and Favela Tataki, combining seared crusted tuna with green mango Thai salad. Main dishes include “Pirate of the Caribbean,” marinated sword fish drenched in Peruvian Creole sauce. Yum. From the “Sharing is Caring” selection, Tablas features Camembert served with three bread varieties, and Gourmet Pizza with cold topping of cured Parma ham and feta and Grana Padano cheeses, while Tapas injects another Peruvian specialty, Causa Chicken or Tuna, plus delish nibbles such as prawns in Jerez sauce. Both the food and wine menus are carefully selected, while cocktails include La Favela Signatures and a few paying homage to missed La Barca.
– 47 –
In the wee hours, diners gravitate to the lengthy front bar, where resident DJs get into full swing, playing anything from Frank Sinatra to “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. Techno addicts may sneer, but these are the sounds that entice people to dance among the vintage clutter, keep them smiley and after a mere twenty days of business, pack them in. But there’s more. Before staggering off home, withdraw to the “restroom:” apt, as it provides a discreet lace curtained section with Granny-style, metal-framed sofas, perfect for taking a breather. And here you’ll meet Ricky the Otter, desperado to socialize, housetrained and resident of a small side enclosure –along with an iguana and cockatoo (no, I haven’t been on any Bolivian marching powder. ) Yes, Luigi, even the restrooms at La Favela are an amaze-balls “experience.” Open 6pm to late: La Favela Bali 177x Jalan Laksmana - Oberoi Seminyak tel: 0361 730010 www.facebook.com/pages/LaFavela-Bali/120321401484354

BIANCA TIMMERMAN AKA BUNNYBONE
by Antonia Timmerman Founder and creative mind behind the label Bunny Bone, Bianca Timmerman, gives a peek into her world of wonders where peculiar girls and art collide. How did you get into illustration? It got into me. How do you want people to feel when they see your work? I want them blushing and maybe a little light-headed… How would you best describe your style of illustration? Obviously the same exact thing as how I want people to see my work. It would be bashful and makes you light-headed. Please take us through your design process, where do you start? I have a huge collection of hot, exotic-looking girls swirling and twirling in my head. Whenever I get in the mood I just pick one girl, grab a pencil, and start drawing.
Tell us more about your girls. Do they have different names and characters? Of course they do, they are Bunny Bone`s girls! Daisy, Bette, Gold Fang, Lightning Rose... Some of them are goddesses, the kind you want to worship all night long. Some others are girls-next-door, the kind you want to swim naked in a river with. They are all seductive in many different ways. So Bunny Bone is you? Your brand? What is it? It`s me. And what I do. It could be my girls, the trinkets I made. Hehe. Music do you listen to when you work? Cocorosie, Bonobo. Recently I am listening to Reignwolf when I am drawing. Very mythical and hot! What tools do you use for your work? Paper, pencil, pen, watercolor pencils.
When do you usually “get in the mood” to draw? When I am looking at a beautiful panorama or listening to good music. Or after a yummy dinner or looking on Instagram. Whenever.
What do you do if you are not drawing? I work for clothing line The Story Of as a designer assistant. It is a nineto-five job and I have never enjoyed working in an office before this. I am also working on a new-born label called Gold Fang and building a studio-printing factory with my boyfriend. Once a month, I organize a family-friendly event called Black Market in a hidden, heavenly spot in Seminyak where we would gather to play music, give haircuts, make tattoos, paint, sell home-made food, trinkets, and artcrafts. What would be your ultimate goal in life? Making a juice bar called Cosmic Mango that has a weekly event called “Friday Pie Day”. Your current reading? I am at the end of Roald Dahl’s The Witches. Three wishes? I wish for a new world free of geckos, I wish for a slow motion in real life and a bunker full of munchies. Five words to describe you? Bunny, bunny, bunny, bunny, bone! www.facebook.com/bbbone

Has Fashion Changed in 20 Years?
by ED In the 1980s and 90s, it was all about leggings, hi-tops and dungarees (for the brave ones). With the dawn of the digital age, and the way that fashion is sold many fashions have come into light and some of the old fashions of the 80s and 90s have been booted out. But mullet haircuts aside, some fashion items have stuck with us and dont seem to be going anywhere. What is still on the market today and what has been thrown away as a fashion faux pas? Has fashion really changed that much in the past 20 years? The 1980s were all about big hair, big jeans and just about big everything not forgetting tight jeans at the beginning of the 1980s. A lot of the 1980s were about both men and women trying to be creative, and the fashion certainly reflected this with big, bold prints on clothing and the colours also rather striking. Some famous 1980s trends were such styles as shoulder pads
and miniskirts for women, and parachute pants for the men. However, some of the styles that were popular back then have slowly made their way back onto the market leggings back then were a popular item, and are seen all around the UK today being sold by retailers, wholesalers and independent shops alike. The same goes for the miniskirt an item of clothing that has stuck around, and it still worn frequently today seen on the clubbing scene a fair few times in a night. But what about legwarmers and parachute pants? It seems as though, while we may use the former on a chilly night, both these 80s fashion statements have not fully made it back onto the retail shelves. The 1990s kept some of the boldness of the patterns from the 1980s, but a lot of clothing was influenced by the Hollywood and film industry as well as the music industry. Grunge was a popular music genre in the 1990s, what with the creation of bands such as Nirvana, Soundgarden and
– 56 –
Alice in Chains; and with this, the clothing scene changed too, reverted to more subtle colours as opposed to the 1980s neontype colours. Doc Martens also hit a popular streak, related to the grunge scene, but also as a practical piece of footwear and the mid-riff was shown perhaps a little too much in the 90s, however a fashion style that does seem to be coming back, with the reappearance of tie-tops. Nowadays, with consumers being able to shop on wholesale and retail websites on the Internet, fashion is much broader and many styles from decades ago have made their way back and are popular. Shoulder pads are still seen around the streets and cut-off jeans are also gaining presence again; so maybe the fashions just hid for a while, and didnt completely disappear.

SHANTI SAYS Turns out, no. I went to a tarot card reader on High Street the next day while I was in London visiting a friend and the cards told me, I am totally in the right place. Exactly where I need to be, right? But I thought, that couldn’t be right. So I started thinking back to all the bad behavior in Bali over the past month. First of all, lots of lots of merrygo-round and musical chair matchmaker in heaven or hell... which is all good and fine and fun but I know for fact that one half of the island’s biggest power couple has also been dallying. Need a hint? What’s that couple everyone wants to be friends with and everyone wants to do. Yeah, its that one. Anyway, boys and girls some and go but friends are forever, right? Or is it dog’s are a man’s best friend? Oh well, we know for a fact someone ran over their friend’s dog, killed it, and wouldn’t fess. Weird… wonder how that will all come out.
But enough about me lets talk about you… have you seen my new girlfriend? All over the Bali mags… kind of a big deal in town. What… you didn’t think Shanti even liked women? Well I do. Love the ladies. I mean, in this current day and age, anyone that doesn’t acknowledge their spot along the spectrum is just a little… boring don’t you think? Now my little peanut butter and jelly cherubs, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. All these naughty things people are doing… some of them can’t help it. Some can. But only the special interesting ones end up here. So if you wanna get in the goss column, just be incredibly young, good-looking, well-dressed, rich and at least have some sort of personality that makes people uncomfortable and be mildly interested or at least be able to make a spectacle out of yourself That’s it really. Now good luck, and be bad! Lots of love, Shanti Love you! Have a great day babe xoxo

69 slam CAROLE PLAYS LOUD
She’s young and fresh but isn’t lacking in talent and zest to express her thoughts through the art form known as fashion design. Brand Manager for 69slam, Carole left an impression with many when she presents the latest collection of the brand. Her creation lends her innate instinct for mixing prints and new cuts in the form of fashion styling. She also spends her time collaborating with emerging photographers and artistic director to create fashion imagery.
Carole, How did you get into fashion? It’s been kind of an accident. I was looking for a first job in France. Got hired by a surf clothing brand. Kind of fell in love with the job. A passion was born. How and when did you start working for 69slam ? I was living in India and willing to move out. I came to Bali on holiday as I loved the country. I’ve met with Nic, my current boss, and I’m still around. It’s been 3 years now that I’ve been working as a brand manager for 69slam now. Tell us about your collections. It’s really interesting to work on 69slam’s collections. Our customers are young, fresh and love colorful and brightful prints. Furthermore we always keep in mind the provocative and edgy side of the brand and look for some naughty inspirations. Searching for new prints, new themes therefore remains the fun part of the job. The fact that we’ve evolved from an underwear company to a global company offering a wide range of products from undies to swimwear and boardshorts makes the collection planning even more interesting. How would you describe your design aesthetic? How come the incredible prints of 69slam? As I said our designs are inspired from both our customers and our brand philosophy “playloud”. We always look into high fashion too as we keep on finding some of the craziest idea. 69slam’s designers then get the best out of it.
How much does travel & sport influence your designs? A lot ! As we are based, in Bali it’s really important for us to get the best out of our travels. Hong Kong, Paris, Bangkok. Every inspiration is important. At the mean time we are a brand positioned in the surf extreme sports industry. Therefore we listen a lot to our riders to all the feedbacks that we can receive from our ambassadors. We need to remain the best at following the fashion trends but also all the evolution of the extreme sports fashion technical aspects. How does that inspiration turn into reality? With a bunch of crazy designers that understood what playing loud means… What’s your connection to the world today? Of course we keep connected to the world through internet, following fashion blogs and magazines. Showing interest into heaps of different arts : photography, fashion design, street art… But our best inspirations always come from the streets. When we go out in Bali or through our travels. Get inspired by people. Is there any place in the world you haven’t been to yet but would like to visit from a professional perspective? NY, LA… the states I guess. You are a global brand—how do you accommodate the needs of women/men all over the world who might have different fashion sensibilities? We’re a bunch of creative / crazy / inspired Western / Indonesian people working here. The mix results into the best match for both markets.

Can you tell us about your Spring 2014 collection? Curious, aren’t you ?! New shapes in swimwear and boardshorts, more colors, a bunch of dope new tshirts… let’s say that we’ve kept on developing the range even in apparel. Who do you think is the ideal 69 woman/man? Haha. Do you mean for 69slam ?! Then I’d answer straight away : Fa’ Empel! Talking about Fa’ Empel, I saw ur latest campaign! Fa’ & Thibaud are the faces of 69slam. Why this choice? Which is really exciting for us (who wouldn’t like to looks a like them ;) Fa’ has been the image of 69slam for many years now. She simply rocks. Then Thibaud came in and I have to say that the connection between both is great. We always have fun shooting with them both. When we look for models we always look for someone with a great attitude and energy… meet them both once and you’ll understand ! I bet that the fact that we have some crazy concepts for our campaigns helps them both to let go and get mad on our shoots. That’s what we like about Fa and Thibaud. Easy going, fun to work with and absolutely gorgeous with an edgy side. What’s next for you professionally? Who knows?? ! And what can we expect for 69slam ? More new products, more playloud prints. Amazing campaigns. And of course do not miss the new collection FW13 in shops in Bali in October 2013.

The Challenge
The Best Candy For Your... 1. Put a candy necklace somewhere sexual on your body. Possibly a thigh or straight up. Have him eat it and mumble sweet nothings and love you forever while you are wearing a pencil skirt because you just got back from your job. 2. Trail candy hearts (probably stale and old because it’s fucking august) all over your stomach and your bed. Have him eat them and massage your breasts while remembering how much he ‘B MINE’ and how much he ‘TXT ME’ 3. Eat a York Peppermint Patty/Mint Candy/Pop Rocks and hob on his knob. The tingle will make him release his protein shake so fast into your mouth you’ll be choking on “I love you” for days afterward. Those three were giveaways. Now it’s getting harder. I feel pressure: Cosmo cannot, will not win this round. I don’t even eat candy! Why? Because nachos> candy, that’s why. Duh. 4. Paint him with chocolate body paint that you can buy on some skeevy porn shop in the capitale or if you are so inclined to be cheap and don’t need to stock up on dildos: Lick it off him and get a little bit fatter. Work out tomorrow. Do it the next night. 5. Make out with him after you popped a Lemon Head or a cinnamon hot candy or a sour candy into your
I don’t even know what this Cosmopolitan Article is about. I didn’t read it, mostly because I really enjoy my brain in full functioning mode and not slowly bubbling and melting into a puddle of goo. Anyway, I read this title on the Cosmo website and thought: I bet I could write that article without reading the real one, compare it to the real one, and probably get it mostly right. I promise you I did not read the “journalistic achievement” beforehand. The description of the article said there were seven tips. So I will do seven tips, too. Anyway, here goes something:
mouth. Pass it back in forth. Not sure if I’ve already read this one in Cosmopolitan, or I saw it on Sabrina The Teenaged Witch. 6. put a couple of M and M’s in your hand and give him a HJ. I know it’s a stretch, I just don’t want to foreplay with candy anymore. Why? 7. Use Twizzlers to create a noose after reading this article. Make sure you use the Twizzler pull and peel, because I feel like that would make a better noose. Write your suicide note with candy buttons. Okay, that one I just wrote because it was funny.
Okay. Those are mine. Now let’s see Cosmo’s and add up my score: 1. Candy Necklace: Use as an edible garter. 2. Melted Chocolate: Melt a chocolate bar in the microwave for 15 seconds… have him use the bar to draw a trail down your body..lick it up. 3. Warheads: Blindfold your guy or send him into another room. Suck on the sour candy for a few seconds before running it over five unexpected hot spots on your body—like behind your knees, on your left nipple, near your
– 70 –
collarbone. Then he has to use his sense of taste to find those areas. If he gets all five right, pass him a Warhead and ask him to challenge you. WTF? Okay. You got one. 4. Sour Belts: While you’re making out, use the belts to playfully whip each other’s butts. I’m being real herethat’s disgusting. 5. Hot Tamales Candy Spray: Use the spray version of this red-hot cinnamon candy to graffiti each other’s bodies. Fuck you Cosmo! I don’t even know that Candy exists! 6. Candy Buttons: Peel off the dots, lick the back then stick them to all the places you want your guy to pay extra attention to. Suicide Note Reference totally counts! 7. There isn’t one! Cosmo fooled me! It’s an ad for Secret “strong enough for a man, made for a less important gender!” So it’s a tie! A tie? What the fuck Cosmo! How about we both just bite a Jawbreaker, lose all our teeth, and give a better BJ tonight? Who wins now? WHO WINS NOW?!

FASHION HOROSCOPE Aries
At a time when your biggest challenge is both work/life balance issues and finding a balance between work and play, it’s important not to sweat the small stuff or to creative fashion emergencies where there are none. This is not a time to create false pressure and expectations, but also not to use being too busy as a cop out. The key to finding the right balance is making it fun.
Taurus
As Mercury, planet of communication leaves your home and family sector, wrapping up a short 15 day visit, the job of keeping the communication lines open and your mind mentally focused now falls to you. With Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos returning next week to really drive things home it’s more important than ever that you keep your mind focused on what does and doesn’t matter, picking your battles wisely.
Gemini
As Mercury, planet of communication wraps up his short 15 day visit to your communication sector choose to take over the reins of keeping the communication lines open, using what you’ve learned over the last few weeks. With Mars, warrior planet of the cosmos now just few days away from his first visit in nearly 2 years, you haven’t even begun to tap into the breakthroughs that are possible. Yet even more important than keeping the communication lines open is keeping it real and authentic.
Cancer
As Mercury leaves your income sector, he leaves you with a smart head for money and a request to hold that thought, revealing that things have not only far from run their course but the real push hasn’t even begun. With the Moon in your career sector and your professional instincts sharp you’re able to hold onto the momentum already created, but also prepare for Mars’ return to your income sector in few days and the glass ceilings he’s able to shatter.
Leo
Just few days after the Sun left your sign and returned to your income sector, to take over from where Venus left off, he’s joined by Mercury and his smart head for money. Yet before your mind turns too much to income and money matters hold onto the ideas and concepts developed during your birthday month, aware that when Mars returns to your sign in few days you’ll soon have a chance to start walking the talk.
Virgo
As the Sun spends his first full days in your sign and you get your first real sense of your new solar year, he is joined by Mercury, allowing you to get your head in the game from the get go. This is when your mental focus is able to shift from looking backwards and inwards and onto looking towards the future. This gives you a chance to start your new solar year with your mind sharp and with the intellectual savvy to take your power back from the get go.
Libra
Earlier in the week the Moon not only made his only visit to your romantic sector while Venus, planet of love is in your sign, but triggered a Full Moon. The Moon has now made it to your relationship sector and while this won’t trigger a Full Moon, at a time when Venus is defining your romantic and relationship expectations for the coming year, this is a valuable chance to define what you want from your relationships and what they need from you.
Scorpio
Just few days after the Sun left your career sector Mercury leaves today, yet this is unlikely to see your professional momentum or focus drop off. What this has done, with the Moon making a timely visit to your work sector, is shift your focus onto work matters before Mars returns to your career sector next week. This gives you a chance to pull back, listening to your intuition and even doing some daydreaming, knowing that it’s when you’re relaxed that the Eureka moments are likely to flow.

Sagittarius
Just as the Sun is spending his first full day in your career sector he’s joined by Mercury, getting you mentally back in the game from the get go. Yet as this kicks off a professional phase that will now run uninterrupted between now and December, the Moon’s position in a playful part of your chart is a reminder that a balance between work and play is essential. This will not only make it easier to pace yourself, but to retain a creative edge.
Capricorn
As Mercury leaves your financial sector hold onto the smart head for money gained over his short 15 days and the financial objectivity the Sun left you with, when he left. While this will take some of the intense scrutiny off financial and money matters, with Mars returning to your financial sector in few days time this brings a chance to let things settle before your financial passions and fighting spirit kick in, taking things to the next level.
Aquarius
As Mercury, planet of communication wraps up his short visit to your relationship sector the Moon’s position in your communication sector is a game changer, ensuring that there is no sudden drop off. This is especially important after a Full Moon just a few days ago will have brought things to a head and even more so with relationships about to move into a whole new chapter when Mars returns. This makes communication important now and over the whole weekend.
Pisces
Having the Moon in your income sector as Mercury leaves your work sector, just after the Sun also left will make it a lot easier to retain your edge, especially as you wait for Mars’ return. As well as giving you a nose for money and a chance to put your income and work objectives on the same page, this will keep your motivation high, making it easier to sense that this is not the end of the road as would be the case in most years.

FIT & TIPS THE CORE
By Dushko The core is big area, covering the middle part of the body. It is not only abs, the abs are part of the core. The benefits of training the core are countless... Connecting the upper with the lower part of the body is its job, therefore, it is crucial for every athlete to have a strong core - less injuries, better performance!
Do these exercises after a good warm up, do them with a good form and focus. You can do couple of sets or you can do them as a part of a circuit training. Have a great workout, sweat and fun! ;-)
Note: all low and high plank positions are done with the back straight, pelvis slightly tilted upward and gluteus muscles squeezed.
Sphinx plank twist
From low plank position, supporting with your right forearm on the floor and left arm by your side, twist to the left side simultaneously bringing the left leg up and reaching to the left foot with the left hand, breathe out and hold for a second. Come back to the previous, starting position with both legs straight, upper body and hips parallel to the floor and engaged core. Repeat the same side as long as your form is good, then switch to the other side trying to do the same number of repetitions.
“V” sit - ups
Lie down on the back, press the small of the back against the floor and lift the legs 5-15 cm off the ground. Keep the arms and legs straight. First, squeeze the abs and lift the upper body, and then add the legs performing full sit up, reaching the feet, with the legs straight and up in front.
X-plank crunch
From high plank position bring the right arm and the left leg up at the same time. The upper body is parallel to the floor. Then, with slow and controlled movement get the right elbow and the left knee together. Bring the same arm and leg up, and then put the right hand and the left foot down. Alternating sides, do as many repetitions as you can with good form. Slightly easier option is to bring the arm and leg up without touching the elbow to the knee.
