THE STORY OF

KUKUH ZUTTION

– INTERVIEW / Designer –

Fauve Magazine got the exciting opportunity to speak to a rising star in fashion, designer Kukuh Zuitton. What did we do? We immediately seized it as both, an opportunity to learn about the business and ask a lot of ridiculous and semi informative questions. Read on to hear what Kukuh told us about the fashion industry,..., wasps and more...

Kukuh, tell us a bit more about u? where do you come from, what is ur background? I’m studying law school and business advertising school so i think its way far from my carrier now but my grand mother and my mum used to make clothes for me so i’ve seen their doing sawing and making pattern or even seeing my mum doing little things for her own fashion outfit so i think why i was here right now its actually things that i have it in my blood so it wasn’t that hard to like my world now. How do you define ‘fashion’ and why do people care about it so much? Fashion is fun and I think fashion its an expression of you, people right now its more confident and more open to express their feeling about what they like and what they don’t like and thats why people care so much. How do you take your design from initial idea to finished product and make an income off of it? i always design something that i can wear so from every creation or ideas i always go back to my self “do i want to wear it?” and other that that i always make it effort able. How did you get started and what do you think is the most important trait of a fashion designer? My carrier start as a stylist, I’ve been working about 10 years and my last job was becoming

one of the team on eat pray love movie which were very excited. And after my 10 years as a stylist i was managing production for australian label called MINKPINK, Someday loving and evil twin. I do a lilltle design for them aswell for embroidery and rayon departement for 4 years. Than i start my own label called THE STORY OF which launched in australia in 2010. I think for every job what is the most important is you have to love your work and I’m sure if you love your work every thing will be more easy. I know sounds like klise but thats how i feel, i never get bored, i never feel what i do its hard and i feel it just easy sometime i don’t feel I’m working, or I’m just workalcholic, hahahaha no but it true love your work its the key. Where is the capital of fashion? wherever How do you spot trends and draw inspiration? i never really follow fashion, i do read a magazine or books about fashion but i don’t believed follow fashion will make you more creative. My inspiration can be from every thing i see, feel or hear. If you weren’t a fashion designer what would you do instead? a singer hahhaa This is the point where we ask exciting and absurd questions. Ready? If you were suddenly put totally in charge of Google, what’s the first thing you’d do? do anything i want If you could invent a religion, what would you call it, what would it be called, what would it be about and what would it’s Holy City be? freedom and the city will be called paradise If you were forced to sing every line you’d speak for

– 11 –

the rest of your life, which singer’s voice would you choose to do it with? sade What’d you rather, not sleep for 3 days, or not bathe for 3 days? not both If humanity appointed you as its ambassador for momentous first contact with aliens, how would you introduce our species? human If you were stuck in the plot of a book for 2 weeks, what book would you pick? cook book If you were a Native American chieftain, what name would you give yourself? Popo Please finish the following sentences‚ Today I feel so much better because i drink coffee Sometimes I forget that I’m working When I watch the news, I feel exhausted Coffee goes well with cigarette I don’t like cats when they’re stealing my food The most important thing my Mum taught me was to pray The most important thing my Dad taught me was to read It’s not good to believe in the past If I were to get stuck with Hugh Jackman in an elevator I’d say hi I hope that this year brings me more happiness www.thestoryof.com.au

Top Spring Summer Ladies Fashion Trends for 2014 So as another year draws to a close but what is hot and what is not when it comes to 2014? Well dear friends, the answers are just a heartbeat away! It is that time of year when fashionistas across the globe come together in order to discuss what will make the catwalks of London, Paris, Milan and New York as well as what trends will take centre stage next year. So lets check out the lowdown on the snoops and scoops of what is exactly trending for 2014. Mod World This particular type of trend is believed to be harking back to the 1960s. This retro style takes advantage of simple designs and shapes, whilst Mod World focuses its attention on two different colour themes. Firstly it is around multicoloured items as well as a black and white palette. This gives the impression of being both strong and elegant which would go alongside numerous jewellery items including wedding rings. Other key patterns that Mod World brings feature; Geometric design. Cabana stripes. Cropped pants. A-line dresses. Spice Trail This is considered to be the perfect blend of detailed embroidery which sits beautifully alongside a number of different metallic materials not to mention embellishment. Meanwhile there are also halter dresses as well as pencil skirts which are hot to trot. In addition to this, ladies will have the opportunity to enjoy not just Indian but a wealth of Moroccan and North African influences including; Handwork and plenty of diverse vibrant colours. A wide variety of different materials such as jacquard, lame and sequins. Tribal patterns, prints and numerous dye techniques.

Glam grunge appeal Another popular trend that you will see next year is glam grunge. This is a much more modern take on the trends which were set in the 1990s. Meanwhile, there is plenty of soft appearance in the designs, whilst there are several elements which have been bought together with denim playing an important role. Some of the most significant colours that will have an exciting part range from steel blue to several wine shades. On the other hand, you should look out for a wealth of patterns offering; Camouflage. Leopard print. Florals. Plaid Provincial picnic trend This is supposed to be a clean look which is reminiscent of the typical sweetheart look. It is entirely based on nautical themes which incorporate a host of floral patterns not to mention stripes, soft plaids and much more. On the other hand, red is certainly a colour which will be in next year. Vibrant and the symbol of passion it will be one of the most talked about shades come next year. Some of the extra colours that will rate high up the list feature; Banana yellow. Cool minty blue. Cotton voile. Linen white

Patterns Again, this is an important trend which has come back into ladies fashion and will be apparent in certain forms. From gingham checks and stripes to different types of cherries fruit prints, there is plenty to write home about! Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to enjoy plenty of patterns which take their inspiration from the West including; Toile and A line skirts. Shirtdress. Jumpsuits. Ruffled dresses. Complete skirt outfits with an eyelet edging. Safari Another iconic collection that is so on trend, Safari will be hot in the next twelve months. It will be the next big street trend which is down to plenty of fashion houses launching their own exclusive collections of jungle type wear. This will no doubt make all the right impressions, so you should look out for; Sharp safari suits. Shorts. Sharp jackets So it seems that dressing to impress is set to be launched in many different forms in 2014. With plenty of unique styles and interesting trends to choose from, there is plenty to look forward to next spring and summer.

Quirky girly Some fashion lines are bringing together unusual feminine fashion styles which sit perfectly alongside more girly outfits. This includes the likes of cat prints not to mention jackets and socks that take their inspiration from the school playground with plenty of pastel colours to boot. Nonetheless this is definitely going to cause a stir among those fashion conscious females who desire this type of style.

TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR... LEGS by VERONICA Your legs are the pillars that hold your body; they take you around, running or dancing. But it is not easy to have beautiful legs, they require great care and there are several elements that can alter their appearance and health. Many women experience swelling, especially during hot weather and during pregnancy. Often this heaviness is caused by fluid retention and poor circulation. This last one is also a cause of varicose veins, which can become very painful as well as unsightly. The dry skin is another ongoing battle. Many women find it difficult to get a skin soft and hydrated in this part of the body. The hair may be a cause of this difficulty,

because most hair removal methods are not very delicate with skin. Once the hair returns, the smoothness and softness of the skin disappears. Finally, one of the greatest enemies of the lower extremities of women is cellulite, which seems to haunt women since adolescence. As we can see, your legs deserve great attention! Fighting cellulites helps to mitigate most of the other issues and following some guidelines and routines can help to reduce these effects. Diet is one of major factors in prevention. Maintaining a natural diet and reduced in salt content

– 22 –

– HEALTH –

is important, since it favors the retention and hinder blood circulation flowing. Animal fats are also not desirable because they increase the viscosity of blood. You can start adding to your diet foods rich in potassium. Potassium, unlike sodium, has the property to remove the water. FRUITS & VEGETABLES: Avocado, Banana, Dates, Kiwi, Mango, Melon, Orange, Papaya, Artichoke, Beetroot, Mustard, Turnip greens, Spinach, Potato, Pumpkin, Tomato, Zucchini OTHERS: Chocolate, Cocoa, Lentils, Milk, Nuts, Peanuts, Yogurt Cellulite occurs when fat cells that are responsible for storing fat grow abnormally, obstructing the blood circulation, tissue oxygenation and elimination of toxins. As a short term plan against cellulite, you should start changing a bit your lifestyle and take good care of your diet. Start cleaning your body from the inside eliminating toxins that your body does not need. You can include in your diet herbal teas, fruit juices and vegetables and remove alcohol and carbonated drinks, coffee and any processed food or drink that has artificial preservatives. Finally, avoiding animal fats is also important. This is a Decalogue with some other tips that can help to improve your plan: By midmorning, drink three tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in half a glass of water. It is also advisable to eat or drink citrus juices (lemon, oranges, grapefruit, etc) Reduce salt intake, it makes your body retain fluids. Avoid crossing your legs when

sitting and do not wear very tight clothes, when sitting, does not help blood circulation. You can take fresh Pineapple in the morning and evening, as it has few calories and is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that promotes the absorption of proteins preventing the formation of cellulite. Mix 7 tablespoons of Coconut oil, 7 drops of Lemon oil and 1 tablespoon of Grapefruit juice. Apply to the area with cellulite through massage 3 times per week. Doing aerobics or cardiovascular for 30 minutes at least three times a week. It is also advisable to run, swim, bike or ay exercise that speeds the metabolism. Drink plenty of water. Place a blanket or pillow under the mattress, sleeping with your legs slightly elevated promotes blood circulation. Dry skin brushing, it promotes blood flow. Use a natural bristle brush; go over the affected areas with gentle circular movements. Homemade cream for cellulite: Caffeine would fight cellulite by helping to redistribute the cells; it also strengthens the veins reducing varicose ones. The sugar will also make a soft scrub on your skin. Ingredients: 1 & ½ cups of brown sugar + ¼ cup freshly used coffee grounds + ¾ cup olive oil Mix everything and massage legs with the mixture 3 times per week. If stored in a tightly sealed bottle, it can last for two weeks. For good smell, you can add 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder. Remedy for Varicose veins: Place a few drops of tea tree oil on a cloth dampened with cold water and then applied over the inflamed area. Infusions of rosemary honey and elderflowers have also soothing properties for varicose veins. Remedy for Swelling legs: This mixture of oils is ideal for a gentle massage every day. 100 ml of virgin olive oil or

– 23 –

almond oil + 30 drops Cypress oil + 20 drops of Rosemary oil + 10 drops of Geranium oil + 10 drops of Lavender oil + 5 drops of Peppermint oil. Finally, Zen Garden in Bali suggests a soup and salad that will help from inside at the same time that your palate enjoys: CELLULITE BOOSTER: Juice in blender 1 cucumber, 1 lemon and 1 tablespoon honey 3 times a day (the first fasting at 7:00 am, the second at 11:00 am, the third at 5:00 pm) for one week. PUMPKIN & APPLE SOUP: 2 cups cooked pumpkin + 1 apple + 1 small onion + 1 cup vegetable stock or water + ½ cup milk or soy milk + ½ teaspoon curry powder + 1 clove garlic + olive oil + salt & pepper to taste Chop the onion finely and sauté in a large pot with a tablespoon of olive oil, when transparent add the apple previously peeled and the crushed garlic clove. Then add the half teaspoon of curry and cook for a couple of minutes. Add the cooked squash and cup vegetable broth or cooking water. Mix everything in a blender until it becomes creamy, add the milk and season with salt and pepper to taste.

karma KONVERSATIONS Drama, Naturally by SWATHIMAA Welcome to the Drama, Momma!” Every Black Friday, that would be my dad’s unfortunate and embarrassingly loud pronouncement. Each year, my mom would make him go with her on that holiest of shopping day. He would’ve opted out, I’m sure, but he owned his own business and had no excuses. So, whether they were at packed table displays, packed toy counters, or packed CheckOut lines, you’d see heads turn in dismay, even from aisles away. He always thought of it as a holiday jubilation, a thing of beauty, an inspiration to weary shoppers everywhere. For her part, my mom was too head-over-heels in love with him to let anyone else know

she minded at all. Ah, holiday memories! Which throws us sideways into the topic of the day: the karmic consequences of drama, especially of our own making. With your permission… I’ll go first. Probably the best way to describe ‘drama’ of any kind, in spiritual terms, is to call it ‘Maya’, which is the power of illusion. Accordingly, the entire universe is made up of Maya. It’s all an illusion. Now, most spiritual characters will tell you this means it doesn’t exist. But, they’d be mistaken. They’ll go on

– 24 –

– SPIRITUALITY –

to tell you in spite of any discordant interruptions that everything is made up of pure Consciousness and, therefore, only Consciousness exists. Furthermore, pure Consciousness is, by its nature, formless, which means anything/everything in form is only a false apparition and none of it actually exists. Again, that’s not true either. A better, more truthful way to look at it — as any stock magician will tell you — is that an illusion is something that happens but, which is not what it appears to be. I know. A scientist would punch holes in this from the get-go. “So, you’re saying Saturn doesn’t exist…it ‘happens’ and it isn’t what it appears to be? Are you kidding me?!” he would say, about to combust. No, I’m not kidding. That’s exactly what it is, just like everything else. But, since this is spiritual Coffee Talk and not a seminar on spiritual Astro-Cosmology, for the sake of discussion, we’re going to stick to stuff that’s more down-to-earth… befitting the time it takes to enjoy a cappuccino and a muffin. Why? (Stay with me, now) Besides being the All-in-One, Consciousness has the power to move. Consciousness moving is called Perception. And, the only reason perception exists is to produce experience…including experience of the All-in-One, if you play your cards right.

difference in our experience. For us humans, cosmic peanuts though we may be, life doesn’t exist without experience. And, part of the joy of Consciousness, wrapped in the cosmic peanuts we are, is that it elicits direct personal experience. So, what do you have when you put all these ingredients together? We experience every thing as something, which is not only what it appears to be. Life ends up being, in effect, a step-by-step process of gaining knowledge — all of it based on our own illusion. We believe things to be one way but they’re not always what we believe them to be.

So, let’s get back to it, shall we.

There’s where the drama comes in. If there is such a thing as an ‘objective’ interpretation, one example would be: most everyone can agree that you don’t have to go anywhere or even do anything yet negativity will find you and interlope on your bliss. Our times are primarily negative. Just sit there for a moment or two. Shit will come. But, when it comes to your bliss, 9 times out of 10, you’ve got to go looking for it. 9 times out of 10, we depend on something…or someone…else to provide it for us. And, 9 times out of 10, it doesn’t happen unless we tweak it a bit ourselves. Or, try to. It’s a sad state of affairs.

Everything we’ve ever experienced with our senses certainly appears to be something…but, just as certainly, there’s always more to it than meets the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, or fingers. In part, this is because we don’t just experience the world… or life…through our 5 senses. Our minds are engaged, too, which interprets, emotes, categorizes, and judges everything we experience. Somehow, our hearts get into the act, too, and we feel things in a very different sense than our epidermis does. All these make a

This belief that we’re dependent on some thing(s) other than our selves for our bliss is what eventually turns us pretty, little, curly-haired girls into the drama queen, bitch-on-wheels we all convert to — not necessarily all the time, but at one point or another. Somewhere along the way, we’ve agreed to accept our own unworthiness as part of our belief system. Who we really are, is NOT who we appear to be. But, the negative vibes in the air — which we’ve bought in to — translate this as meaning we’re less, not WAY

– 25 –

more than we appear to be. Drama only nurtures this. It puts you in Selfexile. The irony is, your personal drama contributions are not only a waste of time for those around you. Since you’re the one who spends all her time with you, they’re really, really, really a waste of your time, too. It’s like cotton candy: initially amusing, cute, and sweet, in its own way; but, in the end, it only makes your ass fat. And, dear hearts, you’re so much more amazing and beautiful than that. swathimaa@omshivaloka.com

DESIGN DOPE Getting down and dirty with the Dope Girls BY FAUVE Design Dope is set to be Bali’s most highly anticipated fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Agency. The launch party was epic – but it has been nothing but go-go-go for the girls at Design Dope Agency since then. We managed to catch up with Founder Chloe Wynne & Queen B of Social Media Christina Iskandar to discuss all things Dope, technical difficulties, fashion & the future.

So tell us once and for all, what is Design Dope? CW: Okay, think of us as your exclusive go-to guide for everything that is fresh, trendy and happening in Bali! We are Bali’s first and only viral Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle Agency. We ship the hottest Bali based designer threads to anywhere in the world, we cover the hottest events, give the inside scoop on where to party, where to eat, what people are wearing… CI: And where to shop.. and obviously there is only one place to do just that, and that is on www. design-dope.com! We do all the filtering for you, so all you need to do is log on to either of our social media sites or head straight to

– 26 –

the main page and you will find everything you need to know about Bali! CW: Design Dope Agency will cater to the overseas visitor who wants to know what is hot and happening but we promise you that Bali Expats will also be logging on, as the content is fab! CI: We have the finger on the pulse and we are going to share all of it with you! Wow! Okay so we have all seen Christina in red carpet interviews from the Yak Awards.. tell us about them. CI: Hahaha, do you like them?

– INTERVIEW / MEDIA –

Well yes otherwise we wouldn’t be asking! CW: The plan for Design Dope Media Productions have been in the works for quite some time.. With Christina’s extensive experience in creative directing and my background in fashion design, it seemed like a natural extension of the vision I had for Design Dope. Amongst one of the first ideas I had was the red carpet footage. We shot the test pilot at our Launch Event, with a beautiful friend of mine from Sydney in front of the camera.. but that role was always intended for Christina.. she just didn’t know that until she was in front of it and we were going live!! CI: Hahaha yes, very true.. That was funny! I kept saying to Chloe we need two microphones, but she just kept saying.. “Don’t worry babe.. You’ve got this in the bag” When we got to the venue; mind you that was a bit of an ordeal in itself as the traffic was crazy and we just weren’t moving, so we dumped the car, jumped on my bike in full party make up and Motown frocks,

and when we got there Chloe said something like “Okay you get in there and do a few tests and I will check how it all looks from here! She had absolutely no intention of ever getting in front of that camera! Is this true Chloe? CW: Absolutely!! Chris is a natural and people love her.. and I love seeing her light up with excitement when she is in her element! Speaking of which, tell us what each of you do in the business.. Job titles please? And run us though an average day at the Dope office. CW: Company Director & Task master! Day to day, I deal with the nitty gritty of it all! Manage the staff, sit in on client meetings, head up our bi-weekly brainstorming sessions, basically managing all facets of the business daily! CI: I semi merged Best in Bali, which is basically just a Facebook page showcasing my personal love for Bali and for the people who are living the dream here! I now manage

– 27 –

the social media client accounts for Design Dope and I will also be playing an integral part in some very exciting projects under the Design Dope Media Productions umbrella… We don’t want to give too much away just yet, but we will be turning out monthly fashion campaigns, working with Bali’s best stylists, models and photographers. CW: Yes, there has not been a quiet moment for us in the last couple of months. Regardless, we are super excited to be working with a brand new team of young creative Indonesians who simply just “get it”!! Let’s talk Indonesia! What is the biggest change you have seen in Bali over the last 5 years and in what industry sectors especially? CI: I have been here for nearly 30 years now and the change I have seen is incredible! We are so spoilt now with so many amazing bars, trendy cafe’s and some of the best restaurants in Asia. Back when I first started coming to Bali, the crème de la crème was a Banana Jappel at the local warung!

– INTERVIEW / MEDIA –

CW: The shift is incredible! As I touched on briefly before, the creativity on this island is amazing.. Bali has always been incredible when it comes to just that.. think handy crafts etc, but the biggest shift that I am noticing is the new force of super savvy and creative young ones (that makes me sound old) who are just as aware, if not more, of what is trending, hip and fresh but obviously their interpretation is totally different from ours, which is exactly why we love working with our new team. You very candidly shared with us the technical issues with your website leading up to the launch, tell us about that. CW: Hmmm, yes well we started fresh with a new team after the launch as we were faced with a few (huge understatement) technical issues.. you know just general start-up business stuff that does your head in, so we had to take a step back and re-asses. Whilst interviewing we made it a point to enlist candidates who either showed up super prepared or had researched the company Whilst interviewing we made it a point to enlist candidates who either showed up super prepared or had researched the company which was a first for us. Several even showed up with portfolio’s showcasing work they had created especially for the

Design Dope interview. All of those candidates are now on our team! CI: Yes, we wanted a team that would engage, show initiative and understand the vision… Although those initial few weeks after the launch were a killer, patience, support and perseverance has brought us back on track! Design Dope is establishing itself as THE fashion & social Bible of Bali … What were your top 3 social events from this past high season? CI: KDT Bikini party hands down. The Snoop Dogg aka Snoop Lion concert was so dope.. he totally lived up to his image and gave the crowd exactly what they wanted.. and the last one would obviously have to be our launch party! What a night!! CW: it’s a tough one.. this year’s high season seemed to go on forever and every party was amazing, but I think The W SPSF event was amazing, so was Cocoon’s Blue party & Mexicola’s high season party was a knock out event too! It’s time to talk Fashion! What’s your best piece of fashion advice? CI: Don’t try too hard.. the clothes should not be wearing you.

– 28 –

CW; Well my approach is slightly different. What’s this thing with dressing for comfort ?? hahaha .. heels are always appropriate.. even in Bali! Who is your icon in the fashion industry and why? CW: Net-a-porter Creator & Founder Natalie Massenet! Amazing vision, self-made, and the creator of something that truly rocked the fashion industry and the way we shop!! CI: Alexander McQueen! Legend, brave and thought outside the box! He took risks!! Ladies it has been a pleasure. Thank you for your time and for talking shop with us! We will be adding www.design-dope.com to our bookmark asap! You got us hooked!

Fashion Stylist, Key to Looking Beautiful by KATIE Everyone wants to look their best. Many of us would spend so much money in order for us to feel beautiful. However, there are times when we often spend it on things that are not suitable for us. It is such a waste of money when we actually spend so much on clothes and cosmetics that dont fit or worse that make us look bad. How would it feel like to have someone going shopping with us or someone there telling us all about the latest fad in fashion today? Is it more fun to have someone helping on how to wear those clothes? Well, all these could be made possible with the help of a fashion stylist! One does not need to be a celebrity to have their own stylist. In the world today, it is but normal to have one’s very own fashion stylist. For most of us who are fashion conscious and do have the eagerness to look their best everyday then a fashion stylist is the answer to our need. A fashion stylist could be someone who would show the ins and outs of becoming a trendy fashionista.

They would be able to help in shopping for clothes that are suitable for ones age, shape of body, skin color and likes. Every season, trend in fashion changes, which is why if we want our wardrobe to compliment, then for sure rendering the service of a fashion stylist can be a very good advantage. He/She will be able to tune our wardrobe on various occasions. The right clothes and accessories for our personality will be chosen all perfectly for us. One would certainly notice someone who has their own fashion stylist because they would stand out in the crowd. They have more confidence and they look highly fashionable. All these could be done without having to spend for those designer label clothes. A fashion stylist would know where to get clothes that look really expensive and yet are inexpensive! Shopping with friends can be really fun as well nevertheless, going out with one’s own fashion stylist will help them decide on the right

– 44 –

and proper outfits for them. The stylist will tell them honestly how a dress looks on them whereas friends wouldn’t tell exactly how one looks like especially if they look bad on it. If we want to make the right decision in finding the perfect clothes for us then again, a fashion stylist could really be the help we need. Furthermore, he/she will be able to guide us now only with the clothes we wear but also on our looks. She would bring us to a good beautician or hairdresser which will enhance our beauty. They would know where to bring us. A fashion stylist eventually is a good money-saver in the long run! A person won’t spend anymore for those things that are not suitable for them. Sometimes, one just needs some professional help in order to boost that confidence. Good looks give higher self-esteem. Many times, it is a matter of building up oneself from the outside as well.

– SPOTLIGHT –

Monsieur Spoon SPOOn - FED

Sacre-bleu! A Parisian-style patisserie- boulangerie chain that brings artisanal bread and sophisticated pastries to Bali – without the Euro high prices and artificial what-not’s. When you have a Parisian foodie raving about the melt-in-the-mouth croissants, an English woman (moi, this author) forever grateful that finally she’s found authentic organic breads baked here in Bali, and a constant trickle of Europeans, almost cult-like each day, clutching their carry-out patisserie boxes packed with pastries, you know you’re on to something formidable. Namely, Monsieur Spoon: a “Boutique French Bakery” and “artisanal boulangerie” – not what you’d expect amongst the rice fields and Hindu temples of Canggu. This quintessential French-style, boulangerie-patisseriecafé, in Canggu located along the beach road complete with charming outdoor terrace, bakes and sells essentially what you’d find on the rainy boulevards of Paris. But vraimente, Monsieur Spoon might even surpass those fabled Parisian institutions.

French-Lebanese Rafi Papazian is creative force, co-owner, executive chef and “patissier createur” for Monsieur Spoon. From Paris to this Island of the Gods, Rafi’s philosophy has been to adapt to baking in Asia, taking time to find and use the right quality ingredients and artisanal methods and keeping it au naturale. Operating for a year, not only does Monsieur Spoon sell a mouth-watering range of Frenchstyle goodies and breads, baked fresh every day on-premises (that Europhiles like me could only fantasize about before …… baking the “new soft porn?”), these taste like no other. The proof is in the pudding, literally. “Baking in Bali, I didn’t expect results to be so good here, perhaps even better than in Paris!” declares Rafi (who appears to be baking around the clock). Unlike most establishments, baking here is a home-made organic process, with “impure” (microorganism) natural ingredients and artisanal methodology, “bringing life back to bread and pastries.” Unusually they use non bleached, non refined flour, importing organic German wheat seeds and milling their own flour, and fermented

dough, plus other natural ingredients such as pure sea salt from Amed cottage salt farms in East Bali, Normandy butter and European oils. “But just mixing these won’t make a good bread,” explains the team. “As an artisanal boulangerie, each of our breads craft a special recipe, a particular fermentation with natural products, in order to develop the best taste, textures, and aromas.” Impure but perfect. Their organic rye and multi-cereal breads, surely the best on the island, nay Indonesia, include pain de champagne, Tourtes, wholewheat and traditional baguettes, plus hard-to-find French Paillasse. There is also Sicilian focaccia (with juicy home-made sundried tomatoes), ciabattas and New York-style bagels. Take home, or create for own fresh-made to order sandwiches, which feature quality meats and produce. It gets better: I am reliably informed by a surprisingly slim Rafi that these breads can’t make you fat as it is purely all-natural ingredients. So there is a God! Monsieur Spoon are also renowned for their buttery warm croissants and piquant lemon tarts (best sellers), but there’s so much more flying out the

door: freshly- baked mille- feuilles, brioches and caramel tarts – “Eat at your peril , it’s so good!’ declares one addict. Natural ingredients again are key: luscious, fully-ripened fresh fruits are delivered daily from Bedugal’s organic farms; try the superflavoursome pure strawberry juice or sensationally moist macarons, naturally flavoured with fresh passion fruit, rose or raspberries. Their near-legendary almond croissants contain non-genetically modified almonds from France – you can really taste the difference. Further surprises include “latte art coffees” and custom-blended and roasted ground coffee (Ethiopian, Colombian and Indonesian organic beans), fresh from the Spanish espresso machine, French-style breakfasts, including traditional “Le Parisian Breakfast” a deux and special monthly presentations of authentic French specialties such as little-known caramelized Kouian Amman Bretagne bread, from Brittany. If you can’t get up to Canggu, there’s a similar-style Monsieur Spoon in Kerobokan plus another one recently opened in Seminyak, with more branches to follow.

– 47 –

“So Monsieur Rafi, are you planning to take over the island?” I enquire. “Actually, non; Asia, as there’s really not much around like this and huge potential!” Monsieur Spoon’s pioneering artisanal baking philosophies and sublime patisserie-boulangerie treats will surely be their recipe for success. Timeless High Fashion Trends By victoria

The world of fashion changes every day and often it is necessary to get rid of the old to make room for the new. Many influential factors influence changes in trends and its a rare instance, especially in high fashion, when a trend can and does last forever. Timeless trends that will always be relevant in high fashion are equivalent to term diamonds in the rough.

are powerful and a high end pant suit can be worn for almost any occasion with the right decorated accessories to accent. Try utilizing this trend if there is a powerful message that needs to be conveyed.

True red comes in many not so trendy forms, but it will be a staple in high end fashion until the end of time. Why red? Its the Marilyn Monroe of colors and considered a power color with a strong sexual influence for passion. Lets look at the facts: its the color of fire, the common rose, hearts, passion, love as well as embodying many more other symbolic meanings. In China, it symbolizes beauty and celebration and it is the color brides most commonly wear on their wedding day. Did I mention that its one of the top colors chosen by men? Its true Venus will always be rising in the high fashion world.

A staple piece of jewelry in high end fashion is the right hoop earrings. This accessory will never go out of style. Whether you like silver, gold, big or small, find the perfect pair that fits you. Getting a few variations is a must. Jackie O, god rest her stylish soul, received millions of dollars in diamonds and jewels from prestigious places and people, but her favorite were a pair of petite double hooped dangle earrings that she got for less than $100 and wore most of the time. She was photographed wearing them on numerous occasions. Its simply impossible to settle for just any hoop earring and there are many styles to choose from so its important to take precious time to find the perfect pair. When you do, youll be soul mates. As for me, Im going to be buried in mine.

While on the subject of power, lets add the well tailored pant suit. There are uncountable variations by numerous high fashion designers but there is one perfect fit for every woman. A good tailor is needed but not necessarily required. Women

The Clutch Purse is the queen bee of handbags. Which is very suitable considering the style was introduced to high society fashion during the Victorian Era. The fashion world had decided that the clutch was no longer in style and it diminished for

– 56 –

decades until WWII. This was due to the shortages in materials and rationing. Since the clutch required fewer materials, it re-emerged in the fashion world. Theyre dainty and they add a feminine touch to any style for any occasion. Thomas Burberry was the founder and creator of the first trench coat. They were designed specifically for the British Army and when the soldiers came home, they continued to wear them on the streets making them the pillar of street fashion for men. Epaulets and other accents were added and the trench coat was reborn and continued to transform for both genders. Today, almost every high end fashion designer makes a variation. This piece may be the most timeless style for both men and women today. New ideas and new trends in fashion are an exciting expectation to look forward to. Its possible that innovative ideas can transform ones world, for the good or the bad. Since the past is all we know, that is all we can reference. But there is one thing for sure and its these high fashion trends will be around forever, unless we become machines and robots. It could happen but it sure does give a whole new meaning to the word attachment.

HEART KINGDOM “TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM” THE VARSITY JACKET TREND. BY AstriD

Most of us are still a good thirty degrees (or more) away from needing a jacket. We’ll be due for a seasonal change here in a month or so. And… one of the bigger trends this fall appears to be the Varsity Jacket. Defined by their baseball-style rounded + ribbed collars, ribbed cuffs + hem, and snaps, these are the jackets that look like they could have some sort of letter sewn to the chest. They’re sporty for sure, and the term “baseball jacket” gets thrown around with these as well. These days, designers from the high street to high fashion have been experimenting with varsity jackets

and thinking up the best ways to subvert and reinvent what is a very classic design. With the ever-present trend of chinos going in popularity at the same time, the jacket is an extremely smart and complementary choice for the informed fashionista. The fun thing about varsity jackets is you can wear them the way you like it. Pretty, chic, grungy, edgy or sporty. Now, would you wear one? Well… I’ve selected some of my favourites below, different types as well, I think they’d suit everyone and of course, a few options on how to wear them. Sounds good? :) Instagram: @astridsoedjono

FASHION HOROSCOPE Aries

Venus, planet of beauty is ready to challenge your excuses this week, as she moves into the more serious half of her annual visit to an adventurous part of your chart. As well as a desire for adventure and to move out of a rut, Venus is challenging your freedom of choice and whether you’re following your own fashion tastes rather than the herd.

Taurus

With Mercury, planet of communication already in retrograde motion in your relationship sector and lucky Jupiter now just 12 days away from turning retrograde in your communication sector, giving the past and unsaid words a voice is fast becoming a priority. Your relationships will always be the first to benefit, but there is a chance now to slow down and make communication a priority across the board, ready to set new precedents or even change the way you connect and communicate.

Gemini

At the same time that the Moon’s return to your income sector is giving you a nose for money during the Sun’s early days in your work sector and Mercury’s early days in retrograde motion, giving work matters a boost, this is creating some lucky hunches in its own right. An alignment between the Moon and Jupiter in your income sector today is the last before the planet of luck and expansion turns retrograde in 12 days time, with a need to slow down and listen to what your hunches are telling you.

Cancer

As we reach a point in the year where the end of the year is coming into sight, your intuition and instincts will already be telling you to start slowing down, something that is not usually the case. You will need to fight a voice in your head that is telling you that it’s time to speed up, reminding you of all those years in the past when you left things to the last minute and you ended up chasing your tail. Yet your instincts will be telling you that’s not going to be the case this year and that you really do need to slow down and smell the coffee.

Leo

here is a need to keep your finger on the pulse and your ear to the ground, with some lucky hunches possible, especially when you slow down and don’t over think things. The most important insights are those that you arrive at through a process of elimination, with your imagination leaping over stepping stones in your mind until you reach those Eureka moments that change everything. While your first thoughts might not be what you’ll stick with, take out those stepping stones and you’ll never reach the real revelations.

Virgo

There is a sense of synchronicity in the air today that can only be accessed through your hunches and only if you take your thinking cap off. It’s those lucky hunches that suggest you should turn right instead of left, to say yes instead of no, to be patient or rush in that need to be trusted without second guessing them. For the forces in play today not only have the power to put you in the right place at the right time, but to trigger some Eureka moments.

Libra

As the Moon aligns with Jupiter for the last time before the planet of luck and expansion turns retrograde in 12 days time, pay attention to what your professional instincts are telling you, with some lucky hunches possible. With the doors already open to the past and second chances on the work and income fronts, this provides clues to the fact that the same will soon happen on the career front as well, but in the meantime how to play these final days where the focus is on the road ahead.

Scorpio

As the Moon makes his last visit to an adventurous part of your chart before Jupiter turns retrograde here in just 12 days time, you’ll find that there is not only a sense of adventure in the air, but a languid feel that makes it hard to buy into a rush mentality. No matter how busy you think you are, it’s by slowing down, staying in the moment and making it more about the journey, that you’re more likely to experience the lucky hunches this is likely to trigger. Leave a rush mentality at the door, instead embracing a sense of curiosity and wanderlust.

– 72 –

Sagittarius

As the Moon makes his last visit to your financial sector before lucky Jupiter turns retrograde and before Venus returns to your income sector in just 10 days time, this provides a chance to sharpen your financial instincts and pick up on some valuable clues, hunches and insights. With Jupiter slowing money matters down to a crawl but income matters about to take off, this will provide the insight needed to balance the very different conditions playing out in the income and financial fronts.

Capricorn

The Moon’s monthly visit to your relationship sector will always push some buttons and evoke some emotional and intuitive responses, but will also give you access to lucky Jupiter and what is developing behind the scenes on the relationship front. With Jupiter turning retrograde and opening the door to second chances in just 12 days time, you’re able to access the doors are already open to second chances on the communication front, especially when it comes to giving the past and unsaid words a voice.

Aquarius

While the Moon’s return to your work sector so early in the Sun’s annual visit to your career sector and Mercury’s early days in retrograde motion is an advantage, this is also important in its own right. As the Moon’s last visit to your work sector before lucky Jupiter turns retrograde this will provide the hunches and clues necessary to determine how to play things, when to apply the brakes and when to push down on the accelerator, making the most of the time you do have until the tide turns.

Pisces

As the Moon makes his last visit to your romantic and creative sector before lucky Jupiter turns retrograde in just 12 days time, this provides an intuitive read into your heart, its emotional responses and the second chances that might be building behind the scenes. This comes just as you’re starting to not only wake up to what you’ve been missing out on, but to the importance of having the right balance between work and play. The key to having it all is first believing that it’s possible.

FIT & TIPS BALANCE

By Dushko Hi guys, so far we have learned some cardio and core exercises that can improve your overall health. Now it’s time to learn how to control the movements while we struggle to maintain the balance - bigger muscle

activation - better results! We are going to use stability ball for the following exercises, but you can use also medicine ball, exercises performed on one leg etc...

Push-up burpee with the stability ball Standing, hold the ball in the hands (don’t readjust the hands position). Put the ball down on the ground, jump back, perform a push-up on the ball and stand up with the ball in the hands. The easier version is without the push-up, and the harder is to perform the exercise on one leg. Don’t forget, the high plank should be done with the pelvis slightly tilted upward. Test yourself :-)

Stability ball circles Starting position is a low plank on the ball. Make sure that your palms are on the ball - don’t interlock the fingers. Between the upper body and the upper arm should be angle of 90 degrees approximately. Use only the arms, try avoiding movements with the body. Start doing circles in one direction and then try doing the same number of circles in the opposite direction. Legs wide - easier, more narrow - harder

Stability ball rolls Start in the low plank position on the ball. Squeeze the abs and the glutes, and with an explosive movement roll the arms until you get the high plank position on the ball. With a controlled movement roll yourself down, back in the low plank position. Maintain plank throughout the exercise - straight line between the body and the legs.

Ok guys, this is my third, last post here and truly it was a great pleasure showing and explaining the exercises to you... I have a challenge for you, but only if you are ready :-) in the three issues of Fauve magazine that I have showed

the exercises, start with the first exercise from the issue15 and then continue immediately with the first exercise of the issue16 and so on... There are nine exercises in total, so try doing each exercise for one minute, and repeat the circuit three times, which equals

27 minutes of high intensity training. Complete the circuit without any rest and I’ll buy you lunch ;-) Stay strong, beautiful and healthy!

Yours truly, Dushko Velichkovski
