“To inspire and to be inspired”
editor’s note Fauve Magazine is an online fashion magazine and blog promoting and following the works of many talented artists, designers, photographers, make up artists and stylists throughout the fast developing country of Indonesia. Fauve was born through my passion to inspire and be inspired by the creative people I encounter as a Creative Director, Stylist & Hair & Make-up artist throughout Indonesia. Due to the support of many people who have shared with me their time and creative energy, Fauve Magazine has come into being. I would like to say a special thank you to Fabio Lorenzo, Emma, Katie, Claudia (my muse), Yoni and especially Rachel from B-Project for her patience in the magazine’s creation. I would also like to make a special mention to a special girl, Tarah Dowling, who has been there for me anytime I needed her, both in front and behind the camera. As I promised a few years ago, Fauve’s first cover would feature Tarah, today this is so!!! To my amazing chick Jade from So Wanted Agency, thank you for sharing with us your beautiful models, they have been a pure joy to create with. A huge thank you to the fabulous Yeanne who introduced me into the Indonesian fashion industry. And finally to my tempestuous, wild & stormy Bianka Todorov; my steadfast, unwavering Andrew Campbell and Manutzo, tried & true ;) you guys have nurtured my passion to create concepts that have made their mark, and continue to “inspire and be inspired”, thank you team!!! Thank you to you all for your ongoing support and faith in me to help turn my creative imaginations into unforgettable moments and images. xxx Julhenry

fabio lorenzo interviewed by katie stone
A sunny breezy Sunday in Bali, I met with prolific and enigmatic Indonesian Photographer, Fabio Lorenzo. Fresh off from his trip to Morocco, he reveals why he loves Fashion Photography and his adventures traveling around the globe. Fabio, notoriously mum on most things, opens up.
I heard you were in Morocco recently? I was shooting for a client from Jakarta. Its also for a magazine, an online magazine. So what happened in morocco? Any crazy stories? When we arrived the temperature was 0 degrees . So can you imagine from here to 0 degrees. I actually started bleeding from my nose. But the next day we got all together, it was about 15 degrees in the day time. It was a great country, so colorful. The people were intense in the way they act and speak, pretty loudly. More aggressive, maybe because they eat a lot of meat. :chuckles: We were in a village with a great skyline of houses and buildings made literally from mud. Check my facebook, Arabic style. Its was a great concept. Who is your team? Normally with Diaz and Emma. They are great to work with. we worked many times together, cant even count. Emma’s amazing. Her and I started in the business together and made our first portfolio together
10
Do you think your going to be traveling much in the future? That’s what my plan is this year. That’s what I’m aiming for: Australia, Singapore, and Thailand. The first plan is to go to Australia. I have 4 clients waiting there for me, but the visa is quite difficult especially with a team. Its quite hard to sort out. What’s it like the life of a traveling photographer? Is it as exotic as it sounds? You know how when you see something new. How long have you been a photographer? About three years
How did you get into fashion photography? Well I started working in fashion, in leather. I was a production manager making the bags, I spent about 10 years working there. I know about fashion from every level. Why do you love Fashion Photography? Every time we shoot you see something new. Its with different models and looks and techniques. Different everything. You can play around with it. What do you look for in a model? It depends on the concept that the client what their looking for. All models can pose and normally the client just picks I want that girl without looking at the concept and how they fit to it. My team normally talk and pick who we think will best suit the concept Are you going be here for the long haul in fashion photography I think so, but sometimes I like interior and product, maybe when I get bored shooting fashion :Chuckles:. All the people in fashion photography are fun. Photographers are generally fun, I enjoy them and you have to create the atmosphere so everyone’s happy in the shoot then it turns out good, if one person is feeling not good it puts things off balance. Did you always want be a photographer? I wanted to be a photographer my entire life but I also want to have other businesses. I want to make my hobby and work I don’t want to have fashion photography as my main job, but more of a hobby as well so I love it and a hobby becomes work. I love my work
What’s going on in the world of Fabio Lorenzo right now? Everything’s getting better. Work is flowing in and I’m getting more jobs. It’s not like with weddings in fashion, its always last minute and they want to shoot in a couple of days. Do you do any artistic shoots just for fun to test your creativity? Sometimes with natural light with friends just to see the different angles elements you can use like glass mirrors and create different effects. Like underwater, to keep exploring and pushing and experimenting, What’s next for you? To Melbourne. I have 4 clients waiting, Any up and coming projects in Bali? I have a ice cream campaign…You know ice cream brand. Last question: Fabio, what’s your real name? Fabio Lorenzo. :Fabio pulls out his drivers license as proof: The story is when my mother was pregnant with me, she went to the theater and saw a movie starring Fabio Teste. As she left she fell down the stairs, so she gave me the name Fabio. Seeing it as a ‘sign” from the universe or something. Italy wasn’t such a far stretch as my dad lived in Milan for a few years and a family friend gave me the name Lorenzo. www.fabiolorenzo.com info@fabiolorenzo.com

MODEL profile
TARAH DOWLING interviewed by Julhenry
multi-talented woman, discover all about our first cover girl....
How did you get into modeling? I think this is probably a bit different then most models stories. I was a bit of a rebellious kid growing up; I didn’t really have a normal up bringing and was kind of involved with the bad crowd. That being said, I was in an after hours club back in Canada, of course I wasn’t supposed to be there, I was only 14 years old! This man came up to me wearing high heeled shoes, was finely groomed, in fact I think he was wearing make-up! He said he had a modeling agency and asked me to come see him the next day at his hotel room. Of course I thought he must be a pimp! But I still took his card as I always wanted to model and I checked him out the best I could before going to the hotel. He turned out to be legit but was a bit of a con artist! He did get me my first modeling contract to Milano though, when I got my braces off at 15!
22
Do you think modeling is all glitz and glam? I very rarely saw the glitz to be honest! I saw a lot of underage girls being taken advantage of, being given drugs, and having their heads filled with the idea that all that their worth was in how they looked. Not only this but you should see the way the model apartment’s were! The agencies crammed us all in with single beds and bunk beds charging each one of us the full price of the apartment! Ha that was the profession I should have gotten into! But yea in all fairness there was some glitz, I definitely got to attend a lot of fancy parties for free and endless amounts of Champaign! Which I do love! Where there any dirty secrets about the modeling world you don’t think many people know about? Well I think most people know about the drugs
given to the girls and how the agents try to sleep with the girls, but what I don’t think people know if the stuff that happened between the girls. There is a lot of competition between the girls. And to be honest there are a lot of girls coming from very poor families and all the money they make gets sent back home so they have a lot of pressure to succeed! But the things they do to get the jobs are just so wrong. I’ve heard of girls putting hair removal cream into other girls shampoo bottles so their hair will fall out! I’ve been told many times when I arrived to a casting that the casting was finished, when it wasn’t, just so I wouldn’t go in and possibly get the job! Did you enjoy modeling? I did at times but I also took brakes from it to keep my sanity! I think as a creative person you can feel like you are selling your soul. In most cases you are more a clothing hanger than a real person, it can be really hard when you are treated like your not even human! I’ve been starved all day and worked without a moment to even sit down for over 10hrs! I’ve been poked with needles, had all parts of my head and ears burnt by hairdressers, and the list goes on. However, even though I may be able to go one and on about all the things I didn’t like, I loved the fact I got to travel, live in foreign countries, meet many hot men! That I was able to support myself from it since I was 16! And I think the modeling really helped me to follow my dream of being a designer! Is designing easier than modeling? Yes and No… I think that there are definite perks about running your own business, like creating your own hours, however, I find I work more on my business then I did as a model and don’t see nearly as much money coming in, yet! I think the designing part is not the difficult part it is the manufacturing in Bali that can drive you insane! There is never any reliability that my orders will be done on time, and there are always family issues or holidays that your workers have to take time of work for! So yea I think modeling is in some ways easier, but modeling could never make me as happy as feeling the satisfaction I get from having my own business no matter how hard it is! Was it a hard transition from model to designer? Well I still model, the beginning stages of starting your own company you invest more than you make so it sure helps to have modeling to bring extra money in! But over all it’s been a pretty easy transition. I think it actually makes me a better model now though cause I appreciate all the work put into my clients brand so I want to give them great photos! What is the inspiration of your line? My line is a representation of me and it is always changing! When I first started the line I had just learnt how to ride a motorcycle and really found it difficult to find shoes I could ride in, so I made my own and it started Della rose! Recently I have been loving my high-tops by Mc Queen and it inspired my new line of high-tops that are in production now for the end of 2012. I think my line will always be changing and I think that keeps it fresh and unique. I design based on what I love first and I just hope that others will love them too! Why did you not want to be your own model for you line? I’ve actually been asked this a lot and I really love stepping outside of that role as a model and sitting in the designer’s chair! Plus I think it is easier to get my vision across when I can see it from the outside, not to mention, there are so many hotter models out there than me that I can now use to sell my brand, plus I’m a Leo, I like telling others what to do! Ha Ha

bumi sehat “Every mother counts and healthcare is a human right.” ~ Ibu Robin Lim (cnn hero of the year 2011)
In 1994, our founder, Ibu Robin Lim, began providing health services for pregnant women and children under five for free in the area of Ubud, Bali based out of her home in Nyuh Kuning village Over the next decade as demand grew and knowledge of her services became widespread, others joined together with Ibu Robin to support the iniative of providing care for women and children of need. The original Bumi Sehat clinic is located in the village of Nyuh Kuning, outside of Ubud, Bali in Indonesia. The community health center has 2 birthing rooms, a postpartum recovery area, and 3 general health treatment areas. Through a variety of weekly clinics, ongoing birth services and 24-hour a day emergency health services, the Bali clinic provides approximately 9,000 consultations and more than 550 births per year. As a popular tourist destination, Bali was economically devastated by the 2002 and 2004 Bali bombings (due to the resulting decline in tourism). Currently, Bali’s economy is also suffering from the worldwide economic crisis that further restricts local tourism. The majority of families living in Bali are economically dependent on local tourism and therefore, the numbers of families living in poverty has subsequently increased over the past 7 years. Many families are unable to pay for health services, and without access to affordable health services, many individuals would not be able to receive treatment for health problems. In addition, Bumi Sehat is currently raising funds to build a larger, purpose-built facility that will allow us to see more patients. Safe, Gentle Birthing Services At Bumi Sehat we provide prenatal care, labor and birth support, postpartum care and breastfeeding education. Our midwives are
34
skilled at providing gentle birthing techniques intended to offer women a place of dignity to give birth, reduce pain, decrease interventions and cesarean sections, and to imporve the baby’s health. Our gentle birthing practices put mothers and families at the center of the birthing process by supporting their labor in safe and empowering ways. This gives women the capacity to give birth naturallly without the use of medical intervention, which can cause more risk for the mother and baby. Safe, gentle, birthing practices such as water birthing, early skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby, delayed cord cutting and the use of herbs and homeopathic alternatives instead of pharmaceuticals, all contribute to healthier births, healthier mothers and babies. To ensure babies are well-nourished and less likely to suffer from illness or malnutrition, we support breastfeeding at Bumi Sehat. Moments after birth new mothers are encouraged to put baby to breast to enable them to receive the full benefits that mother’s milk can deliver. We also send mothers home with breastfeeding support pamphlets to answer any questions they may have once they return home. As part of our gentle birthing services, Bumi Sehat offers weekly yoga classes for all expectant mothers in the community. Yoga, during pregnancy, can help prepare a woman’s body for a safe, natural birth by increasing flexibility and enhancing body-mind awareness. Our bi-weekly acupuncture clinic also is available for those in the community that may be experiencing infertility issues. Acupuncture has been shown to be successful in treating many infertility problems that both a man and woman may face. www.bumisehatbali.org
YOUTH CENTER OF BUMI SEHAT In 2006, discussions with village women led Robin to expand her focus from childbirth, and look at ways to help local youth, including some of the children she had delivered years before.
A Youth Center is Born In 2007, with the help of generous supporters who donated the use of a building and several computers, Bumi Sehat established a Youth Center in Ubud, giving young people valuable life skills, beginning with English language and computing. There are now over 240 enthusiastic young people from the Gianyar region attending the center; the students practice English in a conversational setting that helps increase their confidence. A team of Balinese staff, teachers and international volunteers work together to grow the center’s capability and capacity, with plans to extend into vocational training programs in 2012-2013. Until recently only English, computing and music were offered at the “center”, which doubles as a junior school classroom in the daytime. Environmental Awakening However, with the assistance of volunteering coordinators and volunteer teachers from countries all over the globe, the center is extending its facilities to incorporate programs such as Organic Gardening & Recycling. Australian volunteer, Jose Nunez, who has contributed his time and knowledge to other non-profit organisations such as Slukat Learning Center over the past three years, knows the power of providing the children of Bali with these environmental programs. “When the Balinese children are shown the devastating impact of bad waste management and disposal on their island, they are keen to help protect Bali. They want others in their villages to recognize the importance of recycling and environmental awareness, and gain the knowledge to have a positive impact on the modern world.” Volunteers are Invaluable Many of these centers, such as Bumi Sehat’s Youth Center, find the input from foreign volunteers invaluable. Their contribution helps the centers expand and the Indonesian students are stimulated by the interaction with people from other countries.
Bumi Sehat Youth Center is currently expanding its volunteering programs, offering teaching positions to competent travelers and locals who wish to contribute to the classes offered by the center. Before they leave their own country and throughout their volunteer placement, International and Indonesian volunteer coordinators provide support to all the Center’s volunteers. This includes help with social visas, accommodation, and in-classroom teaching assistance. Post-Tsunami Impact At the same time, Bumi Sehat is also committed to extending its support in the devastated region of Aceh in western Indonesia; the health clinic there provides safe births for many local women, and also treats 1,500 local people who attend the clinic for help with general disease or accidents every month. In October 2011, one of Bumi Sehat’s AVID (Australian Volunteers International Development) volunteers, Jen Richardson, began discussions in post-tsunami Aceh with community representatives, and youth leaders themselves. “Many of these are the sole surviving members of their families. They know they are the leaders of the future and they are determined to give themselves and their peers the best possible future. The idea of the Youth Center appeals because it gives them a focal point, somewhere to call their own and somewhere to learn new skills”. Jen is now seeking international sponsorship and support, and making plans with those local leaders to build a second youth centre, on the grounds of the Aceh clinic in 2012. For further information on the Volunteering Programs at Yayasan Bumi Sehat Youth Center, please contact us through our website. www.youthcenterbali.org www.facebook.com/youthcenterbali

fashion designer profile
johnny widiana interviewed by yoni
Hailing from Negara, a town in west Bali, Johnny Widiana is one of the best presenters in the fashion world that Bali has to offer. Originally a landscape architect, he decided to make his move into fashion in 2006. I had the pleasure of meeting this phenomenal creative mind and one of the nicest and honest people I know in our favorite Italian bistro and this is what he had to say.
You were a successful landscape architect so what made you decide to enter the fashion world? I worked as a landscape architect for 2 years but my partner at that time needed my help as he started a company called ‘7 pers’, at first I had no plans to design but I had a lot of free time on my hands and watched the workers in the factory and got inspired so I started to create designs. My partner saw the designs and he encouraged me to develop designs on my own. I started TJ Concept in 2010 and have been quite successful ever since. You can now find my designs all over the world, in Europe, Australia, United States, Middle East and recently in Russia.
38
Where do you get your inspiration from? Most of my inspiration comes from Asian Tribal Culture such as Papua, Flores, Tibet and India and I bring that culture into modern interpretation. I don’t follow trends as I like to create my own trends. When I go to Paris, my designs are always a success because it is so different. One of my biggest inspirations comes also from my dreams. I dream about shoes and accessories in a very vivid way, I see details and fabric and the next morning I draw these on paper. You can say that my creative mind is always active, 24/7. You have recently moved from Seminyak to Ubud, why this move? I feel better in Ubud as it gives me a balance. My mind is always so active, a creative monster as I call it and with me moving to Ubud with the calm surroundings, it gives me peace. Besides that, it’s cooler in Ubud than in Seminyak because I am so hot! Hahaha! What does the word ‘Fashion’ mean to you? For me fashion is all about self statement, confident to wear and wear to feel confident. I like to empower a person, that’s why my designs are so bold, it makes the person who’s wearing it stand out in the crowd. At the end, there is no fashion at all, we create our own image and we basically don’t need fashion for that, this is what’s most important to me. www.tj-concept.com johnny@tj-concept.com

hair / make-up artist profile
emma kristyono interviewed by Claudia Mirea
In a world full of computerised art and technology where we are subjected to hundreds and thousands of images, few creative people stand out and impress us with their pure artistic talent. Born and raised in Bali, the 21 year old Emmanuel Kristyono grew up surronded by artists and it is obvious she was influenced by them from an early age. Today i had the pleasure to meet her in person for a little chat at Cafe Vienna :
How did you enter into fashion world? Well, I finished highschool when I was 16. After that I studied make-up and hair in Jakarta for one year and half at Puspita Martha International Beauty School and then i moved back to Bali to continue work in the fashion industry. Why you decide to become a make-up artist and hair stylist ? I love fashion. So I wanted to work in the fashion bussiness since I was little, and I chose make-up because first I wanted to be a designer first but then I thought about it and it felt too complicated so later I decided to become a make up artist.
46
Have you being travelling with work before? Yes. I’ve been to Jakarta, Hong Kong, Macau and Morocco. Wow that’s really impressive, and you’re only 21. Do you work as a freelancer and what projects do you have at the moment? Yes I’m a freelancer. I have a lot of projects currently. In Bali I have worked for I-Magazine, Nico-Nico, Uluwatu Lace, Selini, and Jakarta Fashion Week. Do you consider yourself more of a make up artist or hair stylist? Or you do both? I usually do hair for fashion. I don’t do hair for weddings, I normally have an assistant for
that, and during a day of shooting I definitely do both! In your opinion, make-up means to cover the imperfections or it means also to create? Some say it is to cover the imperfections but i think it is to make someone beautiful in her own way and in fashion is all about creation but it always depends on the job or who I do the make-up for. How do you see youself evolving into this business? Well, I love travelling so I hope all over the world! Yeah, I have big plans for my future and I hope that I will be travelling around maybe Europe, (she says shyly) but I know for sure that I’ll always be based in Bali. Do you have someone that inspires you in the fashion world? I dont have anyone that inspires me as a make up artist but I watch America’s Next Top Model a lot, and I really like Tyra Banks and she’s inspiring me to work in the fashion industry. Tell me Emma, what do you love about this job, but also what do you hate ? What do I love? Everything! It’s fun, I always find new experiences in every project, i can work with different people. And what do I hate? Well, I don’t really hate anything actually. I just LOVE my job!
What kind of brands do you recommend for daily / evening make up? I recommend Make-Up Forever for both because they also have good products for daily make up but also for night make up. Also Chanel etc… What’s the most challenging aspect in your job? Dealing with clients that are not so friendly and some models too (laughs). Can you describe a busy day? I wake up very early in the morning, the earliest that I had to wake up was 4am, go to the location and start the make-up. Sometimes I do the make-up for one model, sometimes there are two models and I stay there for the whole day and keep on working, even switching location sometimes. The latest that I left my job was 8 pm. I didnt ask you much about hair, but I know you’re a good hair stylist too, tell me what is the latest style people are asking you to do these days? Pin-up style I would say, but at work clients normaly ask the hair style depending on their clothing concept. www.emmanuelkristyono.com e.kristyono@gmail.com

GEMINI When it comes to your fashion choices, tastes and styles, chances are you’re feeling a bit ambivalent and in two minds about whether you can even be bothered. You’re caught in a kind of a time warp this week where old doors haven’t closed and new doors haven’t fully opened, leaving you in a state of limbo. It’s Venus, planet of beauty’s hesitancy that is rubbing off on you, making it important not to create fashion emergencies where there are none. CANCER You’re having to put your best foot forward on the professional front this week, putting everything you can into getting your new professional year off the ground by mid week at the latest. Yet after a Full Moon in a playful part of your chart over the weekend, chances are you’re a lot more aware of the need for having the right balance between work and play. Introducing some colour, fun and creativity into your fashion choices will go a lot further toward creating the right balance than you might think.
LEO Chances are you have a lot on your plate this week, with finding the right work/life balance an issue, in what is destined to be one of your most powerful professional weeks of the year, with next week even bigger. This makes it important to get organised early in the week, especially when it comes to your professional look. However, you also need to avoid sweating the small stuff and creating fashion emergencies where there are none. Go for what makes you feel confident, without trying to dress to impress. VIRGO You’re likely to find that your confidence is on the increase this week, after bottoming out over the weekend. It’s where your sense of self esteem is fighting back that you’re able to facilitate a powerful turnaround, doing what you can to boost your confidence. Don’t underestimate the power that looking good has on feeling good, seeing spending time or money on your look as an investment not an expense. LIBRA Sometimes it really is all about seizing the moment and in the early hours of the week you have one of those moments that are worth seizing. It’s a mix of passion and your sense of confidence, especially where it’s creating a sense of impatience, that creates the perfect opportunity to get off the fence. Where before you may have resisted change, a new sense of confidence is giving you the courage to try something bold and new. SCORPIO You have reached the halfway point in your current solar year, marked by the weekend’s Full Moon in your sign. This brought a wakeup call for the promises and intentions you moved into this current solar year with and to tap back into your personal power. This also marks the start of the second half of your solar year and if clothes really do make the man or the woman, then make the fashion choices that make you feel empowered.
SAGITTARIUS Quite often what you wear is a metaphor for what’s happening in your life at the moment, but it also works both ways, with choosing what to wear having the power to change the energy and dynamics in your life. If life is so busy that you don’t have time to pay much attention to your wardrobe then chances are you won’t be feeling good, while taking the time to make how you look a priority might actually see your life calm down a bit. CAPRICORN It’s said that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but it’s also a good way to redefine your own look. If you’re looking for a new look, a change or an update, instead of window shopping why not observe others. Take note of people you admire, that you think look good and instead of looking at what they’re actually wearing, pay attention to the message this sends. Within this you’ll find clues of what you’re really looking for. AQUARIUS Pay attention to what your professional instincts and strong reactions to professional matters are telling you, especially in the early days of the week, for they hold clues to some big developments in the second half of the year. This gives you a chance to start lining up in front of the right doors before they even open, while also giving you time to update your professional look, for there is no doubt that your professional star is on the rise. PISCES You have enough stresses on you at the moment without making fashion yet another stress, which is why it’s important to take a smart approach to your fashion choices, options and approach. You have the intellectual savvy to get organised ahead of time, but also to rationalise any emotions that might be clouding your judgement. Aware that first impressions count, take a smart approach to sending the message you want to send.
