FAUVE ISSUE 02

Page 1

editor’s note Here is the second issue of Fauve circulating through our fashion community again. I learned so much during the first, especially how important it is to take care of one’s self whilst chasing dreams. In the beginning this was just a dream, and it’s amazing how once you commit to a decision to do something, life starts presenting all manner of new opportunities, chance meetings, good fortune, unusual happenings, and other examples of intricate and aweinspiring synchronicity. Such has been the experience working Fauve so far. After much seed planting & many moments of tending to the toil, endless coffees, long nights, adrenalin rushes and creative inspirations, this dream has become a reality. In essence, the philosophy of Fauve around the belief that what you focus on grows: simply, the law of attraction. There does come a point in everyone’s life when you must begin to take responsibility for your self, who you are, what you want, and how you want to live. It may be a Porsche you dream for, publish a best-selling novel, climb a mountain, have a family, or plant a colorful garden of exquisite scent. This second edition is an experiment with being, and working Fauve. We are blessed to find ourselves living in such a creative area, an eclectic community that has a diverse range of exceptional things to do, which we hope to share through inviting people to contribute to future issues of Fauve, stories, interviews, editorial articles, creative photo shoots through the magazine.

well as understood, allowing it to be absorbed on many levels. So let Fauve Magazine filter through you. Let your time being Fauve inspire all of you: the artist, the philosopher, the rebel, the lover, the mother/father, business man or woman, the elder, the career, and the child within. As Fauve Magazine begins to unfold, it acknowledges its predecessors; the Here and Now and Be. Other local magazines that have provided a valued voice for our community, as Fauve hopes to do. So you are invited to… Here and Now, Be Fauve. See, it flows! Fauve would also like to acknowledge the support of current and future contributors, and express gratitude to everyone that have begun advertising, making the first issue possible. Their openness and willingness to be a part of something new allowed this free publication to become manifest. It is a privilege to recognize and thank Fa’ Empel, our second cover girl, who is here everytime I need her. A big thank you to Manutzo to be a part of it, Rachel, Stephanie, Jean-Va, Monica to be beside me everyday and to my Japanese/Chinese friend Yoni (who says about me that I was born quarter Swiss, quarter Vietnamese and half gay Mongolian aduh! hahaha) whose astrological insights encouraged the timing during this second flight! So be in love, and share FAUVE !!!

While there is the aim to provide uplifting information that invokes and inspires, a quality that’s central to Fauve Magazine is an emphasis on beauty. It is not just about the words, it’s the imagery and space in between that enhances the exchange, where content can be felt as

Tasmanian born Andrew Campbell used to be known as one of the big wave riders of Billabong but these days he is so much more. Moving to Bali in October 2003 and being a photographer and a magazine owner his life has become different but still as thrilling and exciting as the days on his board. I had the pleasure of meeting him over a cup of coffee and this is what transpired.

14

You are known in the surf world as one of the best surfers back in the day, can you tell us about that time of your life? I started surfing from the age of ten and some years later I became a semi professional surfer and have been that throughout my surfing years, I was picked up by Billabong International in 1998 to join their team of Big Wave Riders, if anywhere in the world were big waves we got sent there. Because of that I have traveled the world and met great people, it was a great time in my life. You now currently own a magazine called I-Mag. That is totally different from being a professional surfer, explain the change? Being in media has never felt alien to me as I was always surrounded by it through my surfing years. I actually studied Mass Communication in Journalism and had done some freelance journalism in school so for people who don’t know me that well it might look like a big change but for me it’s nothing strange. Your first magazine was called Insight Magazine why did you decide to change the name into I-Mag? Those two magazines are not the same, I use to try to raise awareness through Insight Magazine by writing about Social Responsibilities such as environmental issues, over development, pedophilia and sex workers but after covering it all I decided to create a different magazine and that’s how I-Mag was born. This magazine is more about Contemporary Fashion and Art, Surf and Lifestyle. Talking about social responsibilities, these days people are complaining about how Bali is evolving but not in the positive way, what are your thoughts on this? Throughout my years in Bali I have seen a lot of changes, when I arrived here in the early 90s there was more of a laidback hippie group. Then there seemed to be a change into a more conservative, commercial neo-colonialist. But now I see a new wave of younger people coming, who are educated, well traveled and are creative and very much into fashion and art, these people want more from life and I can relate to that. Bali is always in a constant state of change. And my hat goes off to the Balinese in the south of the island who tolerate the western invasion. Thank you, I love you all. Let’s talk about photography, here in Bali you are well known for your artistic eye and delivering that perfect picture, how did you roll into that?

I bought my first camera when I was about 20 years old, I was doing a bit of freelance journalism and it became difficult to find a photographer so I decided to shoot those images myself. The transition to digital made me lose interest, I was always anti digital and stopped for a while. I am glad I learnt photography back in the time of film. It makes you think about each shot so much more. Eventually I bought a little digital camera when on a trip to the States and had a bit of fun with it. It was when I started my own magazine that I got into it again. My friend here in Bali asked me to shoot a jewelry campaign and for the following 6 months after that I had companies asking me to shoot their fashion campaigns and that’s how the ball got rolling. Now I shoot around 3 to 4 times a week for magazines, fashion labels and portraiture. What is it that you like to shoot the most? Fat ugly chicks! Hahaha! No seriously, I like portraiture shooting mostly. In contrast to shooting fashion it’s not about being beautiful, it’s about emotions and how that person is feeling, right in that moment, and capturing the essence of that moment within the context of the past and future. That moment can contain so much. The eyes can show pain, sorrow, happiness, doubt, etc... And facial features etched in over years of an individual’s facial expression says a lot about who a person is. But, mostly I shoot fashion, so I like to play with lighting as much as possible. There is endless possibilities once you get away from text-book lighting techniques. It’s amazing how you can change facial features, body shape and especially construction modd and atmosphere through lighting, I love getting into the studio and experimenting, then take this knowledge outside and find natural bizarre scenarios. Being a busy man, to have some spare time on hands must be welcome, what is it that you do? I try to be as I am and getting away from the world of duality where there is always yes and no or good and bad. I prefer to understand that neither is less or more than the other, it is just different experiences of the whole. I used to do a lot of meditation. It’s a great balance to a hectic world. But now I am approaching every day as a living meditation, rather than being dualistic and differentiating between work and meditation. It’s not easy. andrew@wwmedia.asia www.i-mag-online.com

by veronica The hair, as the eyes or skin, is a living extension of you, has its roots in the blood and feeds from your digestive system. The hair is closely related to the nervous system and not only has a role to adorn your head, but also has a biological function that helps your body to “feel and stabilize magnetically. When your hair starts to become brittle and dry, begins to deteriorate or fall, is time to pay attention. Exhaustion, excessive worries, not exercising, studying in excess without mental rest and sleep deprivation are common causes. The baldness or gray hair is also reflecting your moods and food habits. Your hair is in continuous renewal as nails or skin. The best you can do for the health and beauty of your hair is feeding it properly to better assimilate the nutrients provided by complementary external treatments. A diet rich in minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids and vegetable proteins promote a better health, vitality and growth of your hair. Beneficial minerals are Selenium, Zinc, Sulfur, Magnesium, Iron, Iodine and Calcium. Great Vitamins for your hair are B group, vitamin A and Fatty Acids: Omega acids, Omega 3 & 6. Rich foods on these are: Green leafy vegetables cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, radishes, endive, radishes, turnip and lettuce. Other vegetables seaweed, onion, garlic, cucumber, pumpkin, carrot, watercress, squash, tomato, celery, asparagus, potato, corn and eggplant. Herbs basil, watercress, parsley and dandelion. Fruits bananas, pineapple, strawberries, apple, orange and avocados. Legumes chickpeas, peanuts, lentils, black and white beans, peas and soybeans. Grains oats, wheat, wheat germ and barley Dried nuts almonds, dried figs, raisins, hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews. Fish and Seafood Vegetables, fruits and nuts are much better raw and do not forget to drink plenty of water every day. Try not to abuse of fats, because they promote hair loss, and coffee, because it irritates your nervous system. To promote blood circulation, at night before sleep, lie on with your feet slightly tilted upwards (you can use a pillow). On this position, try to concentrate on your breathing and relax, hit the pads of your fingers to gently massage your scalp. It would be

good in the morning to practice at least 10 minutes of activity that oxygenates your body. On the other hand, motorbike helmets, staying long time under the sun, chlorine and salt can dramatically damage your hair. Sometimes, emergency measures are required to take care of. You can help it from outside making natural masks that will give some shine and silky aspect to your hair. Straight Hair: Put together one smashed ripe banana with some drops of almond oil. Apply on dry hair and let it for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water to finish with cold water. Curly Hair: On dry hair, cover with vinegar (white vinegar, pineapple vinegar or cider vinegar) and cover with a towel and let it for 20 minutes. Wash normally. The shine in your hair can be also achieved by a rinse with beer. Before it is necessary to let the beer lost, at least one hour, all the carbon dioxide that has accumulated. Do not need more rinse it, when dry the smell of beer will disappear. Dry Hair: Make a paste with ripe banana and avocado, smash them and cover your hair for 15 minutes. Then rinse with warm water. Dyed Hair: Soak your air with almond oil and let it for 20 minutes. Then rinse with warm water. Any Type of Hair: To recover vitality, you can make a mask with 2 spoons of plain yogurt, 2 spoons of honey, one spoon of cream and one ripe and smashed banana. Apply for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water. Rinse with vinegar for a Super Shinny hair, my Grandma always did! After washing your hair just soak it in a mixture of water for each part of vinegar and leave for a minute or two. After, rinse with water. As for the type of vinegar to use this is not indifferent as only you can use white vinegar, pineapple vinegar or cider vinegar. Finally, Zen Garden in Bali suggests a juice and salad that will help from inside at the same time that your palate enjoys: Shiny Hair: Mandarin & Raspberry. Vitamin B helps for healthier hair follicles. Raspberries are good to regenerate your hair. Make the mandarin juice in a juicer and then mix in the blender with some raspberries. Salad to Feed your Hair: Cucumber, Walnuts & Parsley with Yogurt. Selenium and Iron on this refreshing salad. Cut in very thin slices one cucumber, (don’t need to peel, just wash well), cut some walnuts in small pieces, chop a bunch of parsley and put ingredients together in a bowl. Add 2 spoons of plain yogurt and mix well, salt and pepper to taste. You can include some drops of olive oil and mint for a cooler dish.

Actress, Model, Designer & even more... Who’s that Chick ???

I hear you are in Jakarta, what are you doing over there? I’ve been here for a couple weeks filming a movie, a love story, called, “Gravity of Love”. Shooting on set starts in a week, so the process is intense. It’s an emotional story. Have you always wanted to act? Yes! Since I was a little girl. I started when I was 10 years old with a talent agency in NYC. I auditioned commercials and movies. I was motivated and I felt connected to the performer inside of me. I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself working with a team of creative people. My single working mom didn’t have time to take me into the city whenever the agency called, so I went back to being a normal kid. My dreams of acting never left me. I continued to perform in plays in school and take acting classes in college. How would you describe yourself as a kid? I had a voracious curiosity about the world. I had a sense, quite young, that the world around me wasn’t IT. I was waiting to grow up and SEE The World! I wanted to be an adult and have that sense of independence. I grew up not traveling too much, staying in the northeast. I’m from NY, so I spent a lot of time in NYC and the other part of the time growing up on a horse farm. It was an interesting childhood growing up with my cousins, fighting a lot, laughing a lot. My grandparents were a big part of my life. I’m grateful for all the opportunities life has given me. You’ve traveled quite a bit, what motivated you? As soon as I turned 18, I flew to Rome for a summer. The bug bit me. The excitement of the world and the possibilities it held was the sole motivator of all of my decisions up until now. I think I thought if I could travel far enough and wide enough I would find whatever it was I was looking for. Turns out I was right. I knew without a doubt I wouldn’t find it at home. I spent a while in Paris studying. I was a totally different person when I came back to NYC. By that time I had developed a sense of urgency about moving on and traveling. I had 6 more months in NYC to graduate New York University, the moment that happened, I hopped a one-way ticket to Los Angeles for a year and lived in Venice Beach. From there I moved to Thailand, a village outside of Bangkok, to teach English. That was huge for me. It’s been nearly 3 years since I’ve left NYC. I’ve done and seen some extraordinary things. That was always the goal.

How did you come to Bali? When I arrived in Bali on a holiday from teaching, the plan was to go back. In my true style, a split second, looking at the ocean, and having really started to fall in love with the island, I knew I wasn’t going back. There was no way. I was already in love. The last two years have been the biggest adventure personally, professionally. Bali has been good to me, I’ve become very specific and focused about what I want. And the opportunities just started arriving. Modeling was my way in to realize I wanted to perform, thats how I look at it. It began with modeling which turned into television hosting and presenting, which turned into acting. What’s happening now? A new chapter for me starting a career in Jakarta. I’m focused on making this film and learning as much as I can and getting comfortable with the whole process of film-making. It’s terrifying when you get what you want. I see how achieving your dreams, sometimes all at once, is scarier than not achieving your dreams. I’ve had to step up. Right now, I’m taking everything day by day, each challenge as it comes. I love the team of people. It’s a good crew with lots of talent, creativity and professionalism. What is next up? I couldn’t guess. I have no idea where this will lead. The plan is to go back to Bali for two weeks end of June and return to Jakarta for the summer to continue model and acting work with my new agency. I’m here meeting lots of different characters and putting myself out there. My other project is a travel show, which could start as early as January. We are waiting for the green light on that. It’s about discoveries and frontiers and giving an audience something they haven’t seen or heard of before. That is my experience everyday. I’m living in a place foreign to the world I come from. I relish in new experience. I live for that. Everyday is an opportunity to see something in a different way. I’m driving through this mad city of Jakarta, on this little island. I’m 12,000 miles away from home. This is the kind of exoticism i dreamed about as a kid. Now I’m here living it. I want to keep that feeling till I die. I want to stand in awe of the world on a daily basis and I’m grateful to Asia for giving me that opportunity. katherine.stone1@gmail.com thefreebobo.blogspot.com

bali peduli To eliminate barriers to care and to provide free and early HIV testing and treatment to save lives and prevent the spread of HIV in Bali.

by yoni One of the newest organizations to have established themselves on the island is that of Bali Peduli. Under the guidance of Dr. Steve Wignall MD, an informal group of concerned Bali residents set up this donation and grant funded project in order to tackle the increasing rate of HIV and STI here in Bali. Lack of testing and treatment has lead to the continued transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections that open the door for HIV entry. Dr. Wignall is an HIV physician and clinical researcher, National Policy Advisor for M2M HIV policy to the Indonesian National AIDS Commission and Senior Medical Advisor to the Clinton Foundation’s efforts to increase access to treatment for HIV+ people in Papua province. Since opening their doors in September 2011, over 550 patients have accessed services and there have been close to 300 patient visits for treatment and follow-up. Approximately 20% of those coming for an HIV test are found to be HIV positive and nearly 80% were found to have other sexually submitted diseases including gonorrhea, syphilis and/or Chlamydia and have received treatment. The BALI PEDULI program is offered at Bali Medika Clinic in Kuta, an established general medical clinic managed by trained sexual health expert Dr Yogi Prasetia. Due to the stigma, shame, cost, and service challenges which discourage clients from attending a purpose based clinic, this practice was considered a far better location for the beginning of this project as his general medical clinic provides services to a wide-ranging population of Balinese and International visitors for general medical and sexual health issues. What does BALI PEDULI program offer: The BALI PEDULI program provides an expanded diagnostic and care clinic for individuals at risk for and already infected with HIV and sexually transmitted infections. This idea is modeled on the successful Siloam Clinic at Bangkok Christian Hospital, with the

40

addition of anti-retroviral therapy. The BALI PEDULI program offers and promote friendly, confidential services to MSM (menwho-have-sex-with-men) and all at-risk communities on Bali. The BALI PEDULI program offers early testing and treatment for HIV and sexually transmitted infections; promotion of responsible sexual behaviors; and easy access to high quality medical services currently provided free at no cost to the patient. The BALI PEDULI program offers expanded clinic hours so that individuals can access services without having to take time off from work The BALI PEDULI program will establish a network of concerned specialists for efficient and timely specialty referral, e.g. if there is a need for surgery, psychological counseling, nutritional advice, or home-based care services. WHAT WILL BALI PEDULI ACCOMPLISH? • Streamlined access to friendly, high quality health services at convenient hours. • More HIV infected patients surviving because of better adherence to meds and better health services • More people accessing antiretroviral medicines early • A vigorous community-based campaign to get people tested for STI, HIV: “Get tested, get treated, get on with your life!” • Increased testing and early treatment of high-risk transmitters helps reduce the chance of more infections • Compassionate care for those who are dying with access to palliative and home care services. Delicious Onion

by yoni Leaving his native Kuala Lumpur to embark on a new life, Mark Kuan moved to Bali and opened his restaurant-bar, Delicious Onion in 2007. Located in Seminyak, one-off Delicious Onion intentionally differs from its chi chi neighbours; armed with a mantra of “Love, peace, happiness and health to all!” Mark aims to recreate those chilled, good old days of 1980s Bali. From an abandoned warehouse, Mark has created a welcoming, homey yet funky comfort zone, eclectically Asian with recycled woods throughout, including the large, square bar and second hand furniture. Casual comfy cushion seating dominates and there’s a lovely outdoor verandah and garden terrace. Striking art works from local artists adorn the brightly-coloured walls and foot-tapping sounds set the scene. This chill-out space is like entering a family home, the host invariably around to personally welcome diners – a diverse, interesting bunch, ranging from designers and chefs to families and Australian tourists – as friends. “We aim to put good energy into everything,” Mark explains. That philosophy and homey ambience extends to the food. Previously a designer and builder of golf courses, this food aficionado has created a menu with passion, carrying his beloved mothers recipes and home-cooked food he grew up with in Malaysia, as well as dishes inspired from his travels. The result is a yummy range of Malay, Chinese, Singapore, Thai and Balinese local dishes, freshly home-cooked with love, supporting local producers and markets and all remarkably wellpriced. These South-east Asian dishes with a twist (all MSG-free) are all about communal food for sharing – especially the Asian ‘Tapaz’ with tapas-style dishes like Chili Clams in Lemon Grass and Rice Wine. Appetizers

also extend to Thai Kafir Lime Leaf Chicken and Coconut Dip in wanton cups and Blue Marlin, Coconut and Kafir Lime Leaf Seviche in cones. There’s also Malaysian Chicken Sate and Rice dishes like Malay Chicken Curry or Spicy Basil Minced Pork, Noodles, such as Japanese Kakuni, plus Salads, including Thai Seafood Salad. Save room for legendary status, Home-made Super Double Chocolate Brownies with Coconut Cream and divine house specialty drinks, fresh Pineapple Margaritas or signature shooter, Greek ‘Cocaine’ (with Sambucca, coffee, sugar and lime). If you’re scared of an ‘Arak attack,’ try their safe selection of local Arak drinks. Lunch or dinner, Delicious Onion is always fun, but special ‘themed nights’ include Monday’s Salsa Nights, with Salsa dancing and live Latino band; Saturday, with live acoustic music on the terrace, and Friday’s Delicious Divas, with promotion cocktails, live DJ with disco music and drag show, where you’ll likely see ‘Katy Perry’ or ‘Beyonce’ strut their stuff! “It’s my intent that the food here nourishes your body and soul, conversations and people you meet here inspire and allow you to inspire likewise,” explains Mark. But why ‘Delicious Onion?’ Mark’s likens his transition of self-discovery and shedding of self-doubts and fear like the peeling away of onion layers. The name also pays homage to his mother’s signature dish of Hainan Chicken Rice and Delicious Onion Chutney, now pride of place on the menu. When creativity meets folie

by KATIE I can visualize my own dreams. There are times that I am so afraid and doubtful of my own capability that I totally lose it and am unable to communicate what I am doing, want to do and hope for. I think that happens in the mid-20’s :chuckling: Oh wait, no, I think I had that when I was 33! If you let it happen it can go downhill. It’s a phase. It’s not even based on reality is it? It’s just my thinking. Let’s be honest, our thinking can get quite nutty at times. Oh hell yeah, life is too short for mediocrity. It’s a sign you probably need to do something totally shocking. …it snowballed. What was going on in your early 20’s? I graduated form a fashion design college in Singapore. I was working for Her World Magazine and then a crisis began. Singapore had to cut off Indonesian employees because of the amount of illegal Indonesian immigrants in 1998. I had to go back. I worked as a designer for men’s mass garment label for two years until I started teaching for the same college where I studied that opened in Jakarta. Also, I began to discover more about illustration. I began an intense relationship with my computer. From there my first illustration was published in A+ Magazine, which was really hip then. I was the only illustrator for fashion in Jakarta at that time. I did a lot of magazine contributions for Harpers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Esquire and more. How do you develop your reputation as Image Consultant? Thank you, I hate being called ‘stylist’! I started doing some campaigns back then when I was still in Jakarta for some fashion labels where I handle most of the production myself, from the concept, story board, models hunting, casting, photo directing even to special digital retouching and copywriting. Styling is just part of visualizing my vision. I pump up the brand according to its niche and give it opportunity for more recognition.

44

K: How do you set up your professional life now? D: The way I have it set up is that I do two weeks Jakarta where I teach in Binus International University, and then two weeks Bali for my side projects. So, before I get crazy from Jakarta chaos, I come back to Bali and find peace. And before I get bored from too much peace, I go back to the chaos of Jakarta again. Can you tell me a little about your background with teaching? Why do you love it so much? It’s the job that you don’t take home with you. Once the lesson is over, you left all that jazz in class room. It’s a fun profession as you can play freely with various projects, and be the leader while your students can still relate to you. I loved that job also because we would always be traveling, for shows and contests, etc. And darn it pays well! What you do you think makes a good teacher for fashion? That you’re able to deliver your lesson in a professional way yet still be enjoyable, entertaining, and stimulating to your students, so they would get motivated rather than feeling tortured by it. As a teacher you also need to have lots of experience, be quirky and willing to take risks. I love your new website: www.whoisdiaz.com My boyfriend and I did it together. He’s an HTML genius. What is the motivation and idea behind your site? I got bored with the previous version which I think too ‘sterile’ for my liking, I wanted to make it bit ‘dirty’ with a bit splash of circus, children’s comic book, cabaret, and all those memories I’ve been keeping in my head. I love your new collage projects that I’ve seen on your website. It’s all so distinctive and idiosyncratic. I just discovered this new interest in Collage, a whole new way to approach graphic illustrating. It’s like playing God, you re-create your characters in the weird and quirk kinda ways while still maintain the beauty. The one that I started last night is inspired by Frieda (Kahlo).

Can you describe your style? How has it evolved over the years? At the moment since I’m very much back into the cosmopolitan world :giggle: I’m very much into casual suits and jackets, no ties. I miss this dressing up since in Bali I only live with my tank top and flip flop. I have a fantastic trench coat and pair it with a 3 quarter length pants and ankle boots, with slick blonde hair and glasses. When I walk in the class, my students look at me and were like “that must be Mr.Willy Wonka meets Mr.Bruce Lee!” What is different about the way you dress now than you used to? I used to be very funky and all about statement from H2T. Now I realized I don’t have to be :Boom, Bam Crash, Caboom: all the time with my style. I can have an element of me that is still 25 and still dress more sophisticated, and that creates a clash of style, that is probably more original. That’s how I got into Zara instead of Topman these days. It’s about what you can deliver, not what you are wearing. What I wear is definitely informed by that. But you look good when you entered this house in your leather jacket and nude summer dress. Biker Chic! :smiles: So, Diaz, If you were describe, in a word or a phrase, what are you most passionate about? Okay, I’ll put in in a phrase then… One mind. Split personality. Multiple aptitudes. Out to cure the world from visual aesthetic disorder. One creative work a day keeps the doctor away :D diaz@whoisdiaz.com www.whoisdiaz.com

Famous Make up & Hair do Team in Bali, All about Yeanne

54

by CLAUDIA You have worked in the fashion industry for quite some time now but when did you decide to become a makeup artist? At first I wanted to be a jewelry designer but six months after I moved to Bali eight years ago a friend of mine introduced me to an Australian woman named Bobby, she was and still is a well known make-up artist. She took me in and I assisted her to do make up for brides and bridesmaids, usually she did the bride and I did the bridesmaids. Along the way I learned to do hair as well. After working 1,5 year for Bobby, I decided to study at Cosmo Prof Academy to become a Profession Make Up Artist and that’s how it all started. You use to have a lot of collaboration with fashion designers but now I see you are more dedicated to weddings, why this change? When I started working after I finished school, that time there were not many make-up artists here in Bali. After a while, fashion designers recognized my work and asked for my portfolio. I have worked with Magali Pascal, Buddha Wear, Lulu Yasmin and more but demand of doing make-up for weddings grew bigger and bigger and along the way I specialized myself in weddings so basically I got back where I started. Fashion is fun but I prefer this in Jakarta where it is, for me, a bit more exciting. But besides doing weddings I also do work for magazines such as Maxx bride, Destination, Dream Wedding Bali Style Magazine and sent my team to the theatre of Bali Agung in Bali Safari and Marine Park. You have now your own business with a team of girls, do you train them yourself? Yes, I train them myself so I can remain my style for people to recognize. Because the demand of weddings grew so big, I needed help and hired a team of 5 girls who are all amazing in make-up and hair. I had the pleasure of working with you a couple of times and I noticed that you are a very spiritual woman who is in touch with herself and the nature that surrounds you, what seems to inspire you? It is beauty what inspires me, beauty in people. Be able to match that beauty from the inside with the outside.

Most women apply make-up as we all like to look good and feel beautiful but how important is it to remove make-up? Oh, it is very important. We put all kinds of products on our faces and at the end of the day your face needs a chance to breathe and relax and be able to do so, it needs to be clean. The best time to clean your face is at the end of the day or before you go to bed, it then has the whole night to rest and heal and be fresh in the morning. What is the biggest mistake women make when they apply make-up on their selves? Here in Indonesia, a lot of women tend to put too much foundation on and in a different color than to their own skin tone. If you like to achieve a flawless finish you need to get the right concealer and liquid color foundation, especially in countries with tropical weather. In my opinion it is not necessary to put heavy oil based foundation on. I do understand why women use it, everybody likes to look beautiful and want to cover up their imperfections but if you put too much on it soon starts to become, as I call it, ‘Masky’ as if you wearing a mask so my motto is ‘less is best’ let the natural beauty shine through it. Let’s talk about weddings some more, you are in a way responsible for the most important day of a woman’s life, how does that make you feel? When I first started I was very nervous because I didn’t know the expectations of women here in Bali but after eight years of being in this business, you kind of get the hang of it. And now, I look forward to make the bride look beautiful on her special day, when she is happy, I am happy and that just makes my day. What is it that you do when you are not working? I love to read books and relax or sweat it out in the gym. I would like to travel more and make it a part of my future job as destination shooting. Besides that I represent Make Up Store and sell it here in Bali, but that’s still work I guess… facebook @ Yeanne Make UP Art

ARIES The focus shifts even more to communication in June, turning what until now has been an important point in the year for connecting and communicating into a major part of your life. Finding the confidence to speak out and express yourself takes many forms but with Venus, planet of beauty a central player in this shift, then your fashion choices and what you wear will play an import role in this. Make the fashion choices you make tell the story you want to tell.

SCORPIO While you’ve been dipping your toe in the water and contemplating the idea or the desire for change for some time, this is the month when you’re likely to find the courage to jump into the deep end. This is the month that you begin in earnest the most transformative year of your life and chances are you may be contemplating a major change in look or a complete makeover. However drastic that change is depends on you, for this is your choice and it’s coming from within.

TAURUS When Jupiter leaves your sign on the 15th you need to be ready to throw yourself into a phase that is less about defining what you want for the future, for you have already been there and done that and more about walking the talk. This is about embracing the future with confidence, even if that means faking it till you make it and the easiest way to feel confident is to dress with confidence. It’s not about what anyone else thinks and is all about how something makes you feel.

SAGITTARIUS Where the pendulum has been slowly shifting away from your professional game to your personal life, things take a dramatic leap this month. While Mars will remain in your career sector until early next month, keeping the professional momentum going, it’s your personal life that is capturing more of your attention. All of a sudden your fashion focus is starting to veer towards what to wear after hours, with dressing to impress taking on whole new connotations.

GEMINI Your birthday month is always a time for embracing the future and for claiming ownership of the new solar year you’re moving into, but this month this becomes a lot more important. It’s Jupiter’s return to your sign on the 20th that kicks off the foundation year of a brand new Jupiter cycle of expansion, making this new solar year anything but another run around the block. As you choose a new look for this new solar year, choose a look that you can grow into.

CAPRICORN For some times the stars have been waging a battle to find a balance between work and play, but today one side concedes defeat and that side is the more playful side of things. From this month professional forces reach a tipping point and while this is good news for your professional game, if you’re going to retain a balance between work and play in your life and in your fashion choices, then it’s now up to you.

CANCER This is a month for working behind the scenes, but instead of the passing fad that this normally is, in the final weeks of your current solar year, this is set to take on more permanence. If you’re tired of dressing to impress or having little time for yourself, then June is a month for claiming back your time, your space and some of your privacy. While there’ll still be times when you get to dress up and make an impression, you get to decide when that is. LEO There has been a gradual shift away from a dominant professional theme over recent weeks, but this month this accelerates to a point where it’s your social life and both personal and professional networking that becomes a lot more important. Where your life is mainly focused is where your fashion focus is also likely to be, with a shift to more social interactions likely to be influencing your fashion choices or needs.

AQUARIUS Anything that typecasts or labels you is likely to evoke a sense of rebellion, as you not only wake up to a need to express your individuality, but also to follow your heart and to have more fun, play, romance and color in your life. This is going to influence your fashion bias and choices fairly dramatically, with a lot of the clothes hanging in your wardrobe looking drab and lacking color. It’s time to spice up your life and your wardrobe. PISCES At the same time that you’re becoming quite comfortable with blending in, not fussed too much about making an impression and more concerned with functionality or making fashion as low maintenance as possible, new ideas are starting to creep in. A more colorful and creative mindset is likely to have you looking at ways that you can add more vibrancy into your life and fashion choices, so long as it doesn’t make life more complicated.

VIRGO Hold onto a spirit of adventure as the professional focus strengthens dramatically this month, holding onto your prerogative to set your own fashion rules. While there is no doubt that your professional star is on the rise or that making the right impression and having the right professional image becomes a lot more important, you’re still able to do this on your terms. Let that inner fashion rebel have the final say, stamping your own individuality on your look. LIBRA Where until now a desire for adventure and a chance to explore your options has revealed that simply going through the motions is not all there is to life, it’s from this month that you have the support to start walking the talk. While new doors are opening on the career front and the door is also opening to second chances on the work front, your professional wardrobe is not going to grab your attention as much as a desire to move out of a fashion rut does. This gives you the confidence to break some of your own fashion rules.
