A Monthly Newsletter of First Baptist Church

From your Interim Pastor . . . Every Member, A Minister! You, your spouse, and your two children – a teenage son and six-year-old daughtergo through the wellestablished routine of preparing for Sunday School and morning worship. You arrive right on time. As you approach the building the lights are on, doors open, and coffee standing ready. Your son moves toward the youth area where he finds other students gathering for Sunday School around some light refreshments and playing an intense game of ping pong. Teachers are in their places, ready to share with the students. The building is cooled or heated, whichever is needed. Technology (this is a youth gathering) is on and ready. The floor is clean and the chairs arranged. You take your daughter to her Sunday School class. Again, there is a teacher waiting with creative, fun materials for learning. The lights are on, room clean, and everything is ready. You find the same thing when you arrive at your class. After Sunday School you enter the worship center. Again the doors are opened, lights on, building cooled/heated. A gracious usher hands you a beautiful worship folder full of information and the movement of worship. The sanctuary is clean with beautiful flowers in place, the platform is set, and instrumentalists waiting to begin. The ministry staff is faithfully in their places. At the right moment the choir sings a well-prepared anthem, right on cue you are led in prayer, worship music draws you to Jesus. The word is opened and proclaimed. It is a beautiful morning of learning, worship, and fellowship! You are sure next Sunday will hold the same.

Many people, many of them unseen and unknown to you, worked hard during the week and throughout Sunday to provide you with meaningful Bible study, worship, and fellowship. The ministry of the church takes place every day and far beyond the walls of the church. During the week caring hospital visits are made, food is prepared and shared, hurting lives are given hope, plans are made for the future ministries of the church, bills are paid, repairs done, and over and over prayer is made for the church and its ministries. Throughout the week children and young people are nourished in their faith both on and off the church property. Homebound senior adults are visited. In the kingdom of God, EVERY believer is a minister. Every person who says “yes” to the forgiving, grace-bestowing presence of Jesus is called and equipped by the Spirit for ministry (serving others in Jesus’ name.)

The life of the church, its ability to function as a body when we gather and its ministry in countless ways during the week takes place because believers, just like you, respond to the call of God to serve Him by serving His children in and through the church. This issue of The Bridge contains more information about the ministries of the church. This is an invitation for you to find your place as a minister of the grace of Jesus. Take the step. Join the beautiful believers who serve Jesus by caring for His children through this wonderful church.

Memory Verses for February 2019 February 3rd Memory Verse: 17

How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! Psalm 139:17

February 10th Memory Verse: 23

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:24And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. - Psalm 139:23-24

February 17th Memory Verse: 6

And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 8 And there was great joy in that city. Acts 8:6,8

February 24th Memory Verse: 36

Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. - Acts 2:36

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth – I John 3:16-18

Valentine cards, hearts, and red roses decorate the month of February. It’s the month when we use the word “love” a lot. But how do we experience the depth of the meaning of real love? And how can we share the love of God in practical ways with those around us?

Rev. Joey Miller Associate Pastor of Pastoral Care fbc.joeymiller@gmail.com

Love Out Loud

Love is not a passive verb, but an active one. There are many opportunities to put our love for the Lord and for others in action through the ministries of First Baptist Church. Some of those ministries are described on a later page of The Bridge. Most have the phone number of a ministry leader that you can call to get involved. Check them out and see where the Lord may use you to show His love to others.

Kay Arthur, Bible Teacher and founder of Precept Ministries, told a story that helps us. An older man was in a prison camp in a cell by himself. Conditions were horrible. It was cold beyond bearable. He huddled on the floor in a blanket to survive. He prayed and meditated on the Lord to keep his sanity. One night when it was bitter cold, the prison camp guards brought in a young man and threw him in the cell next to the old man. He looked as though he was barely dressed, very bruised, and in pain. The older man knew the young man could not survive the night in those freezing conditions. He prayed to the Lord for the young man. He asked the Lord to provide nourishment and a blanket for him. Then he seemed to hear the Lord speak into his heart, “Give him your blanket.” He thought about that and told the Lord that he would die in the harsh cold without his blanket. Again, he heard the Lord speak in his heart, “But you are ready to meet me, and he is not.”

next cell was the young man shivering but alive under the blanket. How do we know this story? Because the young man lived to be set free. He told the story of the love and witness that the old man shared with him and how he had become a Christian because of it. He committed to devote his life to telling about the ones who had shown love in deed and in truth – the old man and his Jesus. God does not always ask us to make that kind of sacrifice. But His Word challenges us to quit talking about love and start doing it. God’s love within us is a powerful thing and will find its way to the needs and hurts of others if we are willing to be instruments of His love. Let’s ask ourselves each day, “How can I show the love of God in a practical way to those who need to experience His love today?”

The next morning, the guards found the older man dead of hypothermia. In the

“This I know, that God is for me.” – Psalm 56:9 What do we know about our God? What do we know to be true about our God? What do we know to be false about our God? I love Psalm 56:9, “this I know, that God is for me.” We do not have to be a great theologian or Bible scholar to know that God is for us, we simply trust in Him and experience Him being here for us. If I was to ask you how God is for you, you might have a different answer than me, simply because God works and moves in each one of our lives differently. We each grow closer to God in different ways. While God does work and moves in different ways towards different people, His primary ways of being there for us stays the same. This I know, that God is for me in salvation, victory and eternity.

This I know, that God is for me in salvation. We cannot save ourselves from the wrath of Hell. Apart from God, we are sinners who live according to our own selfish, sinful desires, and because of that we all deserve to spend eternity separated from God in a place called Hell. But God, who is for us, sends His Son into the world, born of a virgin, not under the curse of sin, lives a perfect, sinless life, and then sacrifices His perfection on the cross. Why does God’s Son sacrifice Himself on the cross? Because God is for us! God wants us to have salvation from our sins, and so He pays the price that we could not pay. He dies for all of mankind so that we can have life, this I know, that the God who died on the cross for our sins, is for us.

This I know, that God is for me in the victory. Because of our sinful nature, we cannot overcome sin on our own. We are prone to sin. We are prone to give in to temptation because by our very nature we are children of wrath and yet our God is the God that is for us. Because of Christ’s death on the cross, we have salvation from our sin as well as the victory over our sins. Through Christ, all of our sins, past present and future, are all forgiven when we confess Him as Lord and follow after Him. Our struggle with sin can be overcome only through Jesus Christ because this I know, that God is for us in the victory. This I know, that God is for me for all eternity. Not only did Jesus bring about salvation for sins and victory over sin when He sacrificed Himself on the cross, but through His resurrection, He brings about everlasting life. When Jesus resurrected from the grave, He defeated death once and for all. When we confess Jesus as Lord and follow after Him, He brings about life here on this earth as well as life for all eternity with Him in glory. Because of Jesus’ resurrection, the death we face here on earth will be our only death. This I know, that God is for us throughout eternity because He brings life.

“This I know, that God is for me.” God is for those who confess Him as Lord and follow after Him. God is for you if you know Him. God wants to be there for you. God wants to bring about the fruit of the Spirit within you. Our role in allowing God to be there for us is to surrender and allow Him control simply.

Student Ministry February Memory Verse: 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

“There is no greater song; there is no greater fame. There is no other Savior; there is no other name. Creation testifies; the angels stand in awe to hear the saints declaring the greatness of our God. There is no higher king; there is no higher throne. Majestic and eternal, His Kingdom stands alone. There is no other rock we build our lives upon. We rise and give Him honor. All praise to Him belongs! Let ev’ry Hallelujah, let ev’ry glad refrain invite the King of Heaven to come and take His place. With ev’ry voice proclaiming the great things He has done, let God be crowned with glory with ev’ry Hallelujah.”

Rev. Butch Reviere Minister of Music fbc.butch@gmail.com

The preceding are the lyrics to one of my favorite anthems, which our choir has sung a couple of times in the past. As I mentioned one recent Sunday, these words compose what I believe to be a great statement of what should be our desire every time we gather for worship. In fact, our praise team will be preparing to lead all of you to join in singing this declaration soon. May every word spoken or sung in this place honor our King, exalt Him to His rightful place of honor, and emanate from our grateful hearts in passionate worship, offered only to our Lord and Savior, Jesus, the Christ.

You may have heard something recently of my impending retirement. After prayer and contemplation almost all of last year, I have decided to retire from my position as Minister of Music here at FBC. On Easter Sunday, April 21 st, I will have been serving here for six years and have officially informed our staff, personnel committee, and deacons of my desire to retire by my 70th birthday next October. We’re announcing our decision at this time to allow the personnel committee to begin the search for my replacement while I continue to serve our church until that person is found. Be assured that I am NOT retiring from ministry. As God gives me health and energy, and when my service here at FBC is finished, I intend to continue singing and preaching as the Lord opens doors for the ministry He has entrusted to me for a lifetime. You know, of course, that there are always opportunities for interim positions and pulpit supply for every “retired” minister. We are called; we are gifted; we continue until Jesus comes or until we breathe our last. And by the way, every believer is gifted and called; and none of us has the option just to quit. We must each serve Him faithfully in whatever ministry is ours until we stand in His presence. Also, Anita and I have no plans to move to another church. We love our family here at FBC and intend to stay involved with all of you in ministry and fellowship as long as the Lord wills. As you have been praying for our pastor search committee, please now begin praying for our personnel committee as they begin the search for your (our) next Minister of Music. Formalizing a job description and finding the right person with the needed skills is a huge task, to say the least, and will require the wisdom of God. We may have many questions about the future, but remember that God is never baffled and never surprised. He knows, and He has a plan. Let our church and each of us be diligent to discover it, follow it, and rejoice in it…for His glory alone.

Let ev’ry Hallelujah, let ev’ry glad refrain invite the King of Heaven to come and take His place. With ev’ry voice proclaiming the great things He has done, let God be crowned with glory with ev’ry Hallelujah.”

One of the most beautiful spoken verses in the Bible has to be 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, ‘ “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all that I possess to the poor and give my body over to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” ‘ To our church family, and especially to those families with children, thank you for sharing with me many opportunities to love through our ministry to children. I love them as a whole, and I love them each individually. I am most thankful for and humbled by the wonderful ministry that I get to call “work.”

VBS Volunteers! During February, we would LOVE it if you could let us know if you can help with Vacation Bible School, always held during the first full week of June. Because of our VBS overhaul for grades 1-6 last year, we are capping out the number of adult volunteers we need in specific areas… our space is limited in some of the rooms. So, if there is an area that you specifically want to LEAD, let us know so we can get you down. And good news for our Preschool Dept. VBS Volunteers, this year YOU get the overhaul. Your schedule will look slightly different, and we will have more preschool classes, which means smaller groups! To let us know you’re onboard, text Kelly or send her an email at fbc.playschool@gmail.com. Can’t wait to hear from you!!

Some things to be aware of during February:

Sunday, March 17th – Sign-ups begin for the Children’s Worship Weekend (more information below). A sign-up sheet will be located on the FBC Kids bulletin board near the Coke machine. Friday, April 12th & Saturday, April 13th: Children’s Worship Weekend at Tall Timbers (formerly Children’s Honor Choir). WASHINGTON PARISH FOOD BANK UPDATE Do not grow weary in doing good. ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:13
