August 2016
Editor’s Message It’s hard to believe that another month has flown by and that August is upon us already. The year is drawing closer to an end and there is still so much we want to share with you. I had the pleasure of attending the Tribute to Gary Moore Show at the Atterbury theatre during July and I have to say that the show truly wowed me. Nathan Smith is a remarkable performer and if you get the chance to see him play, you will not be disappointed. In this issue we launch a new section titled Fascinating People (page 24) and in honour of Women’s Day we covered Hypatia of Alexandria. She even has a font named after her, which we used throughout this issue. Have a look and share your comments, or suggest a fascinating person you would like us to feature. Remember to remind your friends to subscribe and visit our website where you can download and print the Sudoku puzzles, our calendar and also look at the 48 page Finding Dory activity pack, the kids will love it. Until next month, stay warm, spring is on the other side……

We are saddened by the passing of a very special man in the GarsCom community. We lost Jochem Erasmus, member on the Lima Patrol team on Sunday the 24th of July. He was a long term patrol member, a good friend, husband and father. A man you could always depend on and one that will be dearly missed. Our deepest condolences to his wife and son.

Gentle Giants Every month we feature a dog breed and I spend a lot of time doing research to bring you as much information about the breed as possible. Our dog of choice this month is the Great Dane. Clearly there is a lot to consider before you decide to adopt a dog of this kind. Just his size is enough to scare off most people. Movies like Marmaduke made the challenges of living with this enormous dog very clear. I am not going to go through all the breeds characteristics as I normally do. Instead I am going to share some very interesting facts I happened on while doing my research.

nothing more than a gentle giant. The aggression has been bred out of the breed, turning a once ferocious hunter into a show dog. As hunting became less popular, these giants turned into docile pooches with a preference for a leisurely lifestyle. Something you might not know, Great Danes were once thought to ward away ghosts and evil spirits, making Scooby Doo the perfect companion for those meddling friends of his. While the Great Dane is not the tallest breed (that title belongs to the Irish Wolfhound) the tallest dog in the world was a Great Dane names Zeus.
The name Great Dane stuck when the French naturalist; George-Louis Leclerc happened upon a large dog while traveling and he called it : “Le Grande Danios” or Great Dane. In 1941, a Great Dane named Julianna – saved her owners lives. Then we have to mention “Just Nuisance.” Born in the late 1930s, he is the only dog to be officially enlisted in the Navy. He never did go to sea, but he kept the sailors company and appeared at promotional events. Just Nuisance was eventually buried with full naval honours. Read more about him here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_Nuisance
Some basics to remember when considering that addition of a Great Dane to your family: • They are sweet, eager to please, people orientated dogs. • They are easy to train. • Sadly they are short-lived. • They require A LOT of space. • Everything is more expensive for a big dog, food, collars, kennels and Vet bills. • Due to their size, orthopedic issues can develop.

Moroccan Spiced Sweet Potato Soup Get rid of those chill’s with this scrumptious soup. Ingredients • 100g butter • 2 onions, chopped • 10-15ml Moroccan spice rub • 700g sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed • 250g butternut, peeled and cubed • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, seeded and cubed • 250ml chicken or vegetable stock • 50ml fresh coriander, chopped • squeeze of lemon juice • sour cream, to serve (optional) Method Heat the butter in a large saucepan. Add the onions and sauté over a low heat for about 10 minutes until softened. Add the spice rub and cook for a few minutes. Add the vegetables and apple and 150ml of the stock. Cover the vegetables with a double layer of greaseproof paper, tucking the paper in at the sides. Cover the saucepan with a lid and allow to steam for 30 minutes, shaking the saucepan every now and again to prevent the food sticking. Remove the paper; the vegetables should now be tender. Put them into the liquidiser along with the coriander and blend until smooth. Add a little more stock if the mixture is too thick. Transfer back into the saucepan and add the remaining stock. Stir well and heat through. Add the lemon juice and then season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Top each serving with a spoonful of sour cream, if you prefer. www.food24.com

The African Penguin population is currently declining by approximately 2% per year. During 1900 there was an estimated 1.5million of these birds, by 1950 that number was halved and by 1980 the population halved again. Today there are about 70 000 breeding pairs left. These handsome little guys have clean black and white markings, a pointed black beak and black feet. The dot-like markings flecked across the chest is said to be as unique as fingerprints. A distinctive feature of the African Penguin is the pink gland above their eyes. This gland helps them cope with temperate climates. The hotter the Penguin gets, the more blood is sent to these glands so it may be cooled by the surrounding air, which in turn make the gland more pink.
Anchovies, Sardines, Horse Mackerel and Round Herrings but will eat the occasional Squid and Crustacean. They catch their prey diving into the ocean depths for about 2 minutes at a time, during which they hold their breath. They have an array of predators. Marine predators are mainly Sharks and Cape Fur Seals, on land the adults, chicks and eggs are vulnerable to Kelp Gulls and Sacred Ibises from the air and Mongooses, Snakes and even Leopards attack on the ground. Their biggest threat however is human activity. Egg harvesting, guano (bird dropping) harvesting for use in fertilisers, commercial fishing and oil spills are all disastrous for these birds.

Grade 12’s- Build your Career Foundation! It is important to have a diploma/degree/ qualification that gives you a solid foundation upon which you can build your career. I often describe a diploma/degree/qualification as looking like a pyramid, broad at the base (first year tertiary studies) and then narrowing as you get closer to the Picture yourself driving to Durban, you know the apex (qualifying for your degree/diploma/certificate). In the example above, the student chooses to try many subjects in first year; then take the red, lilac, green and purple subjects in second year; and finally major in the lilac and green subjects in third year. Bell Bean Tree
Tree of the year for 2008

Klokkiesboontjiesboom Markhamia Zanzibarica
This is a small slender, upright tree with crooked branches and a soft green crown. They reach an average height of 3.5 meters but can grow to 7 or 8 meters. Young bark is grey-brown, smooth and glossy and matures to a flaky surface in older trees. The young branches have raised pores on the surface of the bark. There are leaflets on either side of the stalk and ends in a terminal leaflet. Fine yellowish hairs are on both surfaces of young leaves and are lost on the upper surface of mature leaves. The leaf margins are finely toothed. The petiolules are almost absent while the petiole is 40 to 90mm long. This tree has beautiful bell-shaped flowers that are yellow with maroon flakes and appear from September to January. The fruit is a slender bean-like capsule, 300 to 500mm long, dangling from the tree in spirally twists from January to May. The fruit is dark brown when mature and they split open length wise releasing flat, winged seeds. This tropical tree is found in low to medium altitude from Tanzania and Malawi, South to the Kruger National Park, and Westwards towards Botswana and Namibia. Found in bushveld, in Zelda Smit riverine fringes and often on rocky ridges and hill slopes. They are commonly found growing among rocks on the dry Northern slopes of the Soutpansberg. The flowers are visited by ants and elephants will eat the trees leaves. The roots of this tree are used in traditional medicine to treat backache. The Bell Bean works well in small gardens. Part 6
Lawless and proud of it! We are still studying grace and last month we saw that the Law of Moses cancels God’s grace. But is the Law really dead? Must we simply accept its demise or is there proof of this? I have heard the opinion from prominent preachers that the Law of Moses is God’s grace because it protects us from the effects of sin – like a fence that keeps a child from playing in an unsafe place and getting hurt (near a cliff for instance). But last month we saw that the Law cancels God’s grace – so it cannot be the same thing! God’s grace is completely contrary to the Law. They cannot even co-exist. They are utterly incompatible. It’s the one or the other. Mixing them makes Jesus nauseous (Rev 3:16). In 2Cor 3:6 Paul stresses their divergent nature when he says that the Spirit gives life but the letter kills. In verse 7 he calls the Ten Commandments (engraved on stones) a ministry of death and in verse 9 a ministry of condemnation. In verse 11 he shows that the ministry of the Law was replaced by the ministry of the Spirit. Paul pitches the 18
Law against the Spirit; they have opposing ministries! And we thought that the Spirit would help us keep the Law? I say never! In Rom 7:7-11 Paul shows that it is the Law that makes you sin and in 1Cor 15:56 he repeats the view that the Law is the power behind sin and death. Still want to be enslaved to it? In Colossians Paul tells us that Jesus nailed the Law to His cross, meaning it was killed. (Col 2:14) Having cancelled and blotted out and wiped away the handwriting of the note (bond) with its legal decrees and demands which was in force and stood against us (hostile to us). This [note with its regulations, decrees, and demands] He set aside and cleared completely out of our way by nailing it to [His] cross. 15 [God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross]. 16 Therefore let no one sit in judgment on you in matters of food and drink, or with regard to a feast day or a New Moon or a Sabbath. (AMP)) This is very
Remember to tell your friends to subscribe
clear – the Law is dead, crucified, therefore Satan is disarmed and no one can judge us when we do not keep it (feast days, Sabbath, food etc). The Law was Satan’s weapon that he used against us. But Jesus disarmed him by taking it away. If you keep the Law you are rearming Satan against you! And he WILL use this weapon to condemn you. Note that Paul uses the past tense to show that the Law is in the past. But Paul goes further. In Rom 6:14 he states that we are not under the Law but under grace. It is clear therefore that when you are under the Law you cannot be under grace. The Law frustrates God’s grace (Gal 2:21 KJV). (In addition, he also shows that under the Law, sin rules over you!) In Eph 2:15 Paul states that Jesus ‘nullified the Law in His flesh’. In Heb 7:18 Paul calls the Law ‘weak and useless’. We saw in Galatians last month how Paul took on the churches for mixing Law and grace. He demonstrated how the Law makes you a slave – you lose your freedom. Jesus made you free; stand in that freedom. He bought you out of the slave trade; do not go back to that oppressive system and fall away from God’s grace. (Gal 5:1&4) In almost every one of his epistles Paul slates the Law. The Law is dead. We are no longer under it but under grace (Rom 6:14). Stop working for God’s favour; simply receive it (Rom 4:4-5, 5:17). He wants to shower you in His grace; but only if you stop trying to earn it. You must get out of performance. It does not impress Him; only faith can do that. Remember that grace is God’s undeserved favour. Repeatedly I have shown that the Law is opposed to grace. It cancels out God’s grace (Gal 2:21, Gal 5:4, Rom 6:14). Jesus states in Luke 16:16 that the Law and the prophets came to an end with John the
Baptist. It was superseded by the gospel. The Law is dead. You were bought by Jesus’ blood from the slave trade. Do not go back there: Gal 4:9 But now that you have come to know God (or rather to be known by God), how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless basic forces? Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again? (NET) and Gal 5:1 For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be subject again to the yoke of slavery. (NET) The slavery and ‘weak and worthless’ system that Paul is referring to here is the system of Law. Jesus made you free, stand in your freedom. Let no one steal it from you. In one of his sermons John Sheasby says that the word ‘worthless’ can be better translated as ‘desperately poor’. Yes this system makes you desperately poor spiritually because there is no faith there; it is a system of obedience to works while it should be obedience to faith (Rom 1:5 and 16:26) (NET). I repeat what I said about the Law last month: When we try to keep the Law we exchange Jesus for works! We put the Law above Jesus. Remember that He wants a relationship with you above all. The rest is of little importance. Focus on Jesus. Please read the quoted texts. Next month we will look at covenants and how it explains the demise of the Law. Write to me, engage me and I will try to answer any questions that you might have. My contact details are: email: featzmags@gmail.com Subject: Grace

Environmental Did you know that window tinting can reduce your homes energy usage and help save the environment? Windows can lead to increased energy usage indoors. Although windows serve as a source of light, warmth and ventilation, they also negatively impact a building’s energy efficiency. • The conduction or transmission of heat through your window panes increases the need for air conditioning when it is hot. • Windows also store heat and radiate it towards the inside or outside of the pane as appropriate. While blinds and draperies help block the suns light, it also absorbs heat, making the room warmer. This heat may be15 times greater than the heat from the warm outside air. The most effective way to manage unwanted amounts of solar heat gain that enters your home is to block it before it gets in. This solar heat also wears your flooring and furniture at a faster rate. To make your home more energy efficient, apply window tint films, this can reduce heat loss on days that are cold and heat gain on days that are hot.

The Voortrekker Monument project was completed and unveiled in 1949. This project did not go without its fair share of headaches. a day or so, not willing or able to tackle the dangers of this massive project. The company’s foreman Mr PCL Smit volunteered to tackle this project on his own. He had two helpers and devised a block and tackle system enabling the workers to pull him up from the ground. This was by no means a fail safe method as more than once he felt himself being dropped as the workers holding the rope started falling asleep! This problem was quickly solved by the worker on the ground tying the rope around himself and lying on the ground. This monumental project took Mr Smit more than two years to complete. The
Voortrekker monument has four huge dome windows, one on each side. Each of these windows contain 1072 pieces of glass, some of them as small as a matchbox! Anyone who has visited the Voortrekker Monument will understand and appreciate the intimidating height of this building when standing on the balcony close to the roof – can you imagine hanging from a rope on the outside of this building while working! The photos show Mr Smit performing and completing this task.

Hypatia of Alexandria Pagan philosopher, scientist, mathematician and civic leader Assassinated in 415 Hypatia was born in either c. 350 or 370; her exact birth has been lost from history. When you do some research on the history of Alexandria and the struggle between Pagans and Christians there are a few facts about this remarkable woman that simply cannot be debated. Hypatia, daughter of Theon of Alexandria was a mathematician, astronomer and philosopher way ahead of her time. She was driven by a need for knowledge above all else. Despite the era in which she lived, Hypatia was a confident woman secure in her knowledge and not afraid to speak her mind. She was educated in Athens. Around 400 she became the head of the Neoplatonist School in Alexandria, where she imparted her knowledge of Plato and Aristotle to students; including pagans, Christians and foreigners. There is a lot of reference to her virtue. Sadly this remarkable woman stands out in history, not for her achievements or her virtue. She is remembered only in reference to her brutal murder. She was the victim of political jealousy between Orestes (the Prefect of Alexandria) and Bishop Cyril. Hypatia was dragged to a church called Caesareum, where she was stripped and murdered with tiles. After tearing her body in pieces her mangled limbs were taken to Cinaron where they were burnt. If you would like to know more about Hypatia, email us at featzmags@gmail.com, subject: Hypatia
