Editor’s Message August is always my favourite month of the year, for one it’s the last month before spring arrives and how can I not love my birth month. Looking at a weather forecast for the month of August it seems we will only have two days this month where our maximum temperature will be below 200 and if like me, you prefer the warmer days then that is good news. Looking at your garden, you are sure to see the first signs of spring all around you. So what’s not to love about the month of August? This month’s issue is full of interesting bits and pieces, and if you are expecting a baby during August, have a look at Facts about August-born babies, it will give you an idea of what you have to look forward to. It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving Mother Teresa
During winter time you sense that many people are extremely aware of poverty, children and youth suffering of hunger and cold as well as different charities and the work we do. People reach out in numbers to support the various causes with donations and labour – all in the good name of Mandela Day and the 67 minutes of your time campaign. And as a charity we are excited to welcome the kind and caring citizens into our circle as we appreciate the money and the time they donate to us, to help us improve our service or our facility. The goodwill of people outnumbers those who turn a blind eye Unfortunately, once the excitement is over many of these kind donors and volunteers return to their normal business, only to forget that the service of welfare is rendered all year round and that the needs of the charity remains the same. We do however get people that ask how they can get involved on a more permanent basis.

Bred solely to be a companion, the Shih Tzu is an happy, outgoing housedog who loves nothing more than to follow his oom to room. The breed sy background: ginally kept by Chinese families uring the Ming Dynasty. With his flowing hair sweeping the ground and his topknot elegantly
tied, the Shih Tzu does appear snobbish, suited only for lying about a palace on silk pillows. Nothing could be further from the truth, however. Shih Tzus are beautiful, but they are also friendly, lively, devoted companions. The Shih Tzu personality is enormously appealing, and even grudging dog observers find it hard to resist this breed. The Shih Tzu simply doesn’t allow anyone to ignore him. He was bred to be a friendly companion — he doesn’t hunt, herd, or guard — and that’s what he is. He loves nothing more than to meet and greet friends and strangers alike. Count on a Shih Tzu to make friends wherever he goes. Not only is this member of the Toy Group good-natured and friendly, he is highly adaptable. He is as well suited to apartments in the city as to life on a country farm. He loves children and gets along with other animals. However, although the Shih Tzu is a sturdy dog, his small size puts him at a disadvantage. Adults should
always supervise interactions between children and dogs, and this is especially important for the Shih Tzu, to prevent him from accidentally getting hurt during rough play. Interestingly, the Shih Tzu is sometimes called the Chrysanthemum Dog, a nickname that describes the way the hair on his face grows out in all directions — he looks like a flower with a nose for the centre. One unique characteristic of the Shih Tzu is his undershot bite. His lower jaw is slightly wider than the upper, and the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth, rather than outside, when his mouth is closed. Legends regarding the Shih Tzu abound. One says that Buddha travelled with a little dog fitting the description of a Shih Tzu. As the story goes, one day, several robbers came upon the Buddha with the intent of robbing and murdering him. The little dog changed into a ferocious lion and ran off the robbers, saving Buddha’s life. The lion then turned back into a fun-loving little
9
dog, which the Buddha picked up and kissed. The white spot on the heads of many Shih Tzu’s supposedly marks the place where Buddha kissed his loyal friend. Many also believe that Fu Dogs, the guardians of Buddhist temples, are representations of the Shih Tzu. All dog breeds have a purpose. Historically, the purpose of the Shih Tzu was to be a companion — and that’s just what he wants to be. He simply desires to be with you. So don’t expect him to hunt, guard, or retrieve; that’s not his style. Affection is his dominant characteristic, and your lap is his favourite destination. He is happiest when he is with his family, giving and receiving attention. That said, the Shih Tzu is not a total couch potato. He’s alert and lively and may bark at newcomers to his home. Don’t worry, though; he’ll make friends with your guests the minute they walk inside.

Along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, this tree has often been used to demarcate farm boundaries. I’m quite sure the farmers just lopped branches of big trees and stuck them in along the boundary line as giant cuttings or truncheons. Now 50 –80 years later these trees are local landmarks. These plants must be in full sun to allow for maximum growth and vigour. The sunlight also helps to reduce soil pathogens like damping off fungus. From a wildlife point of view, these are heaven on earth as they get older and begin to set figs. The figs are eaten by everything. The beautiful
fig tree blue butterfly caterpillars eat even the leaves. The softwood of dead branches makes wonderful nesting logs for birds like Barbets and Woodpeckers. As a Bonsai Natal Figs are virtually unsurpassed in the shapes that can be created from the plant. The dense, dark green, drooping canopy of the magnificent Ficus natalensis makes it one of our finest indigenous shade trees. The size and growth habit of this handsome tree varies widely, depending on the climate and general growing conditions. In the Cape region, for example, the Natal Fig has a neat single trunk and tends to be smaller than its counterparts growing in subtropical regions, where the canopy becomes far wider with a profusion of aerial roots and a buttressed trunk. The fruit or figs that are produced prolifically by these adaptable trees, while not suitable for human consumption, attract a great diversity of wildlife to the garden from birds to bats and a variety of insects. The versatile Ficus natalensis is wind and drought resistant and tolerates temperatures from -5C – 30+C.

Women’s Day
Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Women’s Day on the 9th of August in South Africa? It has nothing to do with honouring women just ecause we need another “Mother’s Day”, this day commemorates the 9th August 1956 when women participating in a national march petitioned ainst pass laws … For anyone who does not know the history – “pass laws” e legislation that required African persons to carry a document on them to that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’ during the Apartheid regime.
day in 1956, over 20 000 women of all races and ages from every corner h Africa marched together towards the Union Buildings in Pretoria. These omen were marching in protest against the pass laws that proposed even restrictions on the movements of women. Organised by the Federation of African Women, the March was led by four brave women; Helen Joseph, Moosa, Sophie Williams and Lilian Ngoyi. The leaders delivered petitions to Prime Minister JG Strijdom’s office within the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Women throughout South Africa had put their names to these petitions indicating their anger and frustration at having their freedom of movement restricted by the hated official passes. To conclude the Women’s March, the women sang freedom songs such as Nkosi sikeleli Afrika, however, the song that became the anthem of the march was “Wathint’ abafazi, Strijdom!” The march was a resounding success and South Africa recognises the bravery of these women who risked arrest, detention and banning by declaring 9 August National Women’s Day.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is excited to announce the first ‘National Cuppa For CANSA Day’ taking place on 3 August 2018, as part of the Cuppa For CANSA campaign http://www. cuppa.org.za/ , traditionally held from June to 31 October annually. CANSA challenges all workplaces, businesses and service organisations to ‘Splash out Hope’, and to raise awareness of those affected by cancer, by hosting a Cuppa in the work place, and sharing photos of events on CANSA’s National Facebook Page - CANSA The Cancer Association of South Africa on 3 August. Maria Scholtz, National Head Sustainability states, “By sharing your favourite beverage at a

Cuppa with work colleagues, we also aim to create awareness of the challenges both employees and companies experience when having to deal with the cancer. Life in the workplace is made easier if both you and your colleagues know as much as possible. We know that for some, work actually forms a valuable part of most cancer survivors’ recovery. It provides them with a sense of purpose and normality when, often, their lives have been turned drastically off-course. It’s about educating employees, providing them with information that enables them to deal with their colleagues who are living with cancer. Cancer survivors benefit greatly from support and acceptance by their colleagues.” Participants who share photos will be
entered into a competition, and stand a chance to win wonderful prizes. Competition details may be found on https://cuppa.org.za/2018/06/25/ national-cuppa-for-cansa-dayaugust-2018/ “So here’s an opportunity for corporate companies to show their support by committing to fight back against cancer. Depression and Exercise Suffering from depression is one of the most isolating things in the world. It can leave you paralyzed with misery, unable to explain to anyone why you feel that way and why it isn’t as simple as getting “your mind right”. While clinical and serious depression will likely require therapy and medication, exercise can greatly reduce symptoms of depression and improve one’s ability to deal with it. This is due, in part, to the following: • The release of “happy hormones” such as endorphins • The suppression of immune system chemicals that can worsen depression • The calming effect an increase in body temperature can have • The improvement in selfconfidence that comes from taking care of yourself • Taking your mind off problems you may have • Exposing you to more social interaction. A friendly smile from a stranger while you are taking your daily walk can have astonishing effects! • You learn to cope in a healthy way. Instead of distracting yourself with drink, drugs, and anything else destructive, you can take a moodboosting, distracting run. How do I go for an hour long run if I don’t even feel like getting out of bed?
• Start slowly. You don’t need a rigid, intense exercise programme to reap the benefits. Start by being more active: cleaning the house, washing the car, gardening, etc. Then bump it up to a 20 minute walk, and keep going until you’re exercising at least 30 minutes per day, three to five days a week. • The key to maintaining an active lifestyle is to find something you enjoy. What good is taking a two hour run to improve your mood if you detest running? Find what works for you, keep experimenting, and you’ll find yourself living an active lifestyle before you realize it! • That being said, sometimes you need to force yourself to exercise. Write a note for yourself when you’re on an exercise “high” to remind yourself about how crappy you felt before, and how great you feel now. When the last thing you feel like doing is exercising, and you’re feeling like its futile, read that note. Push yourself out of the door, put one foot in front of the other and GO. You will not regret it. • Set reasonable goals. Expecting to run a marathon in 6 months is a sure fire way to destroy your selfconfidence and motivation. Take it slow and enjoy the process. • Try not to think of physical exercise as a chore. A big

It’s a war out there!
By: Johan Jordaan
I refer you back to chapter 27 Of Kings and Peasants. This chapter expands about what was discussed there – that we as sons can reign when we receive. But we also receive authority. Jesus had much to say about authority. He sends out His disciples with these words: Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came up and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. (NET) The word therefore transfers the same authority that has been given to Him over to us. We now have His authority. We get that authority when we (1) know about it, (2) claim it and (3) need it for our part in this great commission. But this authority is in His Name. Luke 10:19 Look, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions and on the full force of the enemy, and nothing will hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names stand written in heaven.” (NET) Here Jesus is clear about the fact that spirits (Satan and his kingdom) submit to us, we have authority over them. But beware how you apply this authority; do not go outside of your sphere of authority. This is by no means a blanket authority
as people have found out. You have full authority over your own life. Not even God Himself will interfere with that authority. You have authority over your family. The line runs like this: father, mother, children and grandchildren, etc. You also have authority over your property, even rented property. As a citizen of a country you have shared authority over that country. The more people stand together the more their authority. Unity always leads to more authority: Matt 18:19 “Again, I tell you the truth, if two of you on earth agree about whatever you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. 20 For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them.” Verse 20 does not tell us that Jesus pitches when 2 or 3 are together, no He is always with us even when we are alone. This passage is about authority and specifically authority in unity. When husband and wife agree about something it has a lot of authority where it concerns their kids. When a whole family agree it has even more power. (I wish I knew this many years ago.) When a congregation or community or a whole country agrees there is enormous power there. And this is spiritual warfare 101. You stand in your authority and oppose Satan: Jas 4:7 So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. (NET) In
37
Eph 6:10-20 Paul gives us the weapons and strategy we need for this warfare. But note that in verses 11-14 he tells us to stand 4 times! That is our strategy – we stand against him. We stand because Jesus already got us the victory. In verse 10 he says that our power comes from God, we do not stand in our own power. Our struggle, says Paul is not against people, but against the (evil) spirit realm. We fight therefore not with guns and knives but with spiritual weapons which he lists: things like preparation, faith, our salvation and the Bible. The last weapon is praying in tongues – a gift that we mostly misunderstand and undervalue. There is evidence that more people are oppressed by Satan than what we give him credit for. He and his armies of generals, commanders and soldiers try to manipulate everything in your life to harm you. He will NEVER do something to your advantage. John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. (NET) He is against you because God is for you! He hates God and you because You are His creation.
things like Freemasonry, Broederbond etc. Visit the website of Ignited in Christ (www. ignitedinchrist.org) and download the necessary documents on how to break these curses over you and your family. You can do a lot to get free from satanic oppression simply by standing on your authority. We can and must fight back for the sake of our children. I do not want to honour Satan by giving him undue respect but we should also not be ignorant. He is walking around like a roaring lion because He knows that his time is very limited. He is out in full force, but so is Christ’s army! Take your place as a warrior in His army and don’t be afraid: 1John 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (NET) We conquered him and have nothing to fear.
Stand and don’t be a victim like so many others, be a warrior for Jesus and your family. You might suffer some battle scars along the way but victory is guaranteed. He will fight back and even win some battles, When I was baptised (a few years ago) within but eventually victory is yours. Life is a Garden 40
August in your garden Awesome August has arrived, which means it’s almost time for a spring awakening... You will see on crispy August mornings new mint-green leaves sprouting, and bees and butterflies zooming over swathes of daisies turning their heads to the sun. Wake up and make your life a garden! Go crazy with daisies! No other country in the world can lay claim to the same sensational indigenous late winter and early spring colour that we can, with our fantastic Osteospermum hybrids, sold under the collective name of Cape Daisy. These ground-covering plants are loved by butterflies and thrive in full sun. They are spectacular in window boxes, in mixed containers or in single patio pots. For a mass of cheerful flower faces, few plants beat the beloved daisy bush (Argyranthemum frutescens). Every year more hybrids and colour variations appear, with each one seeming to be more floriferous and more compact than its predecessors. They are perfect for sunny patios, balconies, pool sides, or anywhere that a typical sense of spring awakening could be celebrated. Daisy bushes are at their most colourful in cooler months but flower repeatedly in summer if they are looked after well with ample water, feeding and a light clipping after a flower flush. Hot tip: Give your old pots a new lick of paint before planting them up with your daisies or invest in new clay pots roomy enough to allow them to grow into large cushions of flowers.
Waterwise daisy – Golden daisy bush It’s almost impossible to be upset about anything if you are standing in front of the golden daisy bush (Euryops pectinatus) in bloom – this indigenous shrub is just too cheerful! On a bright sunny day, the hundreds of butter-yellow daisies stand out against dense foliage and catch your eye from afar (and those of pollinators like bees and butterflies too!). Their greyish green, fern-like foliage is also attractive. Plant them en masse along garden paths or in rows of pots to make a real statement. They grow fast, are easy on water and flourish virtually everywhere, except in the coldest of climates. Stylish Clivia If you can only choose one fantastic early spring-flowering plant, make it a Clivia (also known as the Natal or bush lily). When the breathtaking orange flowers burst forth after winter they instantly banish any traces of the winter blues still lingering. More you need to know, is that they are easy to grow, evergreen, perennial and have lovely dark green leaves that are long and strap-like. The trumpet-shaped, brightly coloured flowers are arranged together in sturdy flower heads attached to fleshy stems. They last for several weeks and then give way to fleshy round berries that remain on the plant for months. In a nutshell • Legend has it that Clivias bring good fortune if planted near your house. • Good for dry shade gardens. • Pretty in pots too. Sweet temptations Plant a compact and hardy Strawberry hybrid for a delicious crop of sweet fruit in summer till autumn. Keep it indoors on a sunny window sill or outside on a balcony in a pot or hanging basket. This is an ideal gift for a loved one as well. A is for Azalea GCA nurseries will always have potted Azaleas in a wide range of colours in stock in August. Sometimes you will find pots filled with three to four differently coloured flowers all in bloom at the same time. This is because quite a few cuttings of different hybrids are planted together to supply bright colour indoors or on a shady and protected patio. Keep your plants always moist, but not sopping wet. Never allow the soil to dry out completely. Prevent water on the blooms and closed
41
buds, and keep the plants in good light or filtered sunlight and out of cold drafts, and they will keep on blooming for many weeks. After flowering, they can be planted out into the garden or in bigger pots, in the shade.
of which includes planting bee-attracting herbs. This list includes: Sweet basil, bergamot, catmint, French thyme, lemon balm, borage, mint, cotton lavender and lavender.
Bedding bestie – Gazania
Calla lilies galore!
One way to describe Gazanias (more commonly known as Treasure Flowers) is to say that they have large, stripy, or boldly coloured daisy-like flowers in shades of orange, white, yellow, pink, red and many bicolours, which open during the day and close at night. But, that does not say it all! Originating from South Africa, they can also withstand high heat and little water. They prefer sandy soil with excellent drainage and full sun. To initiate beautiful blooms throughout many months of the year, plant them into compost enriched soil and feed them monthly.
Commercial growers regularly release new Arum hybrids in all the colours of the rainbow. There are flowers in shades of maroon to near black, golden yellow, apricot, soft pink, cerise and red, to name just a few. Tubers to grow these lovely arums in the garden or in outdoor pots are usually available in August at GCA garden centres for planting in spring. But, if you do not want to plant some yourself, you can also buy calla lilies in full flower to display indoors in bright light. Keep the soil in the pots always just moist.
Rose care for August If not yet done, roses can still be pruned in August. In very cold regions pruning end August is best in any case. After pruning, pull off all remaining leaves as they can harbour disease and pests. Spray bare stems to kill insect eggs and fungus spores, dig in compost, and a rose fertiliser. Add a fresh layer of mulch and water well afterwards. Friendly bugs – butterflies and bees Butterflies bring a lovely, colourful and whimsical look to the garden. While feeding on plant nectar, they also collect pollen on their legs and carry this pollen to other flowers and parts of the garden, creating the opportunity for entirely new flower beds to spring up, in time! Without bees we will lose many vegetables and fruit which are pollinated by them. Unfortunately, their numbers keep on dwindling due to a lack of flowering plants in smaller gardens. You can encourage bees to your garden (even if it is just a garden in pots), in a few ways, one

Oshkosh Airventure EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) AirVenture Oshkosh (formerly the EAA Annual Convention and Fly-In) is an annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts held each summer at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, United States. The airshow is sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), an international organization based in Oshkosh, and is the largest of its kind in the world. The show lasts a week, usually beginning on the last Monday in July. During the gathering, the airport’s control tower is the busiest in the world. EAA was founded in 1953 and was originally started for homebuilders and restorers of recreational aircraft. Although homebuilding is still a large part of the organization’s activities, it has grown to include almost every aspect of recreational
44
aviation and aeronautics. The first EAA fly-in was held in September 1953 at what is now Timmerman Field as a small part of the Milwaukee Air Pageant, fewer than 150 people registered as visitors the first year and only a handful of airplanes attended the event. In 1959, the EAA fly-in grew too large for the Air Pageant and moved to Rockford, Illinois. In 1970, when it outgrew its facilities at the Rockford airport, it moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The EAA estimated the attendance in 2014 at over 500,000, with 2,081 visitors registered from 69 nations. There were approximately 10,000 aircraft, 2,000 show planes, and over 900 media representatives on-site from five continents, along with 790 commercial exhibitors.
The large number of aircraft arrivals and departures during the fly-in week makes the Wittman Field FAA Control Tower the busiest in the world for that week in number of movements. To accommodate the huge flow of aircraft around the airport and the nearby airspace, a special NOTAM is published each year, choreographing the normal and emergency procedures to follow. More than 4,000 volunteers contribute approximately 250,000 hours before, during and after the event. This is the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration and it has it all when it comes to aircraft, Warbirds, Vintage, Homebuilts and Ultralights. Some you would normally find in a hangar at your local airport, others so unique they are the only one of their kind. Daily air shows, Aerobatics and pyrotechnics, Feature films at the Fly-In Theater, Forums, workshops, and demonstrations, KidVenture and Special programming at Theater in the Woods. All of this, plus much, much more is included with your daily admission. Add in the crowd-thrilling, showstopping Night Air Show and some famous bands playing and you will have a week to remember!

In 1891 Williams co-founded Provident Hospital and Training School Association in a three-story building on Chicago’s South Side. At a time when only 909 black physicians served 7.5 million African Americans, Provident was the first blackcontrolled hospital in the nation. Yet Provident was also the first medical facility to have an interracial staff and the first training facility for African American nurses in the US. Now nationally recognized, Williams in 1894 was appointed Chief Surgeon at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. As Chief Surgeon, Williams set high standards for doctors from all over the world, who came to witness his operations. He also reorganized Freedmen’s Hospital which had suffered years of neglect, instituting a training school for black nurses, employing a multiracial staff, improving surgical procedures, developing ambulance services, and providing staff opportunities for numerous black physicians. Williams died at the age of 75 on August 4, 1931.

h School for Girls Matric Polar Bear Swim By Danielle Robbertze 24 July proved chilly to all brave Matrics. The PHSG pool was home to loud, colourful and mostly freezing Polar Bear Swimmers. Many girls did complete the two lap swim. Some only jumped into the icy water for a second before immediately getting out as they did not want to risk their bodies going into hypothermic shock. This swim will surely have icily awakened all brain cells from a warm hibernation for the upcoming exams. The Polar Bear Swim was a wonderful and shocking valediction of the pool for Grade 12 learners.
Annual Prefect Swap By Sandy Soe On Friday 20 July, the prefects of Pretoria Boys’ High School (PBHS) paid their sister school an annual visit. Head Boy, Kyle Brown, delivered a refreshing speech on the unrealistic expectation and judgement of women on social media, how women are treated as objects rather than people, and how we can empower ourselves and change these negative attitudes. The PBHS prefects were also surprised by the lively nature of the assembly, with a performance from Rhythmony and a birthday celebration for PHSG Deputy Head Girl Kiese Mpasa, admiring the warm atmosphere. The prefects of both schools later had a light breakfast and the chance to socialise. The PHSG prefects also went to PBHS, with Head Girl Tshegofatso Matlou’s speech receiving a standing ovation. A Canadian choir, the Kokopelli Youth Choir, also put on an amazing performance at the assembly.

Choir Report – Term 2 2018 Term 2 was exceptionally busy for the PHSG Choir. They performed at the Overkruin Choir Festival, competed in the ATKV Applous Competition, worked at the PA Movie Night Fundraiser, held a Mother’s Day Concert and rehearsed tirelessly for the World Choir Games – perfecting their repertoire and choreography. During the exam period, some of our choristers took up the challenge of learning to play the marimbas in preparation for the Folklore with accompaniment category of the World Choir Games. Some tweaks were made to the choir uniform and many girls volunteered to assist with cutting, pinning and sewing the shweshwe belts for their dresses. The Doves started the last week of their holiday by performing at the Mayoral Concert held at the Sun Arena on Sunday 8 July. During their lunchbreak on Tuesday, they went to the Olympic Village where they had the opportunity to meet choristers from all over the world. The Doves participated in the Folklore with Accompaniment category on Wednesday (held at the Aula at the University of Pretoria) and the Pop Choir Category on the Thursday (at the State Theatre). Saturday saw the girls making their way to the NG Kerk Moreletapark for the awards ceremony. We are so incredibly proud of these young ladies who achieved a Silver Certificate Level VIII for their Pop Choir performance and were winners of this category. They also received a Silver Certificate Level VII for Folklore with accompaniment, placing third in their category. I am sure that it was their jubilance which carried their tired bodies up the hill from Tshwane House to the Union Buildings, singing and dancing all the way. We were fortunate enough to be able to attend the closing ceremony of the World Choir Games which the girls enjoyed immensely.

When planting up containers, always start with compost-rich, well drained soil. Intense flowering relies on nutrient rich soils; regular
nutrition will enhance and prolong the flower display. Sunshine is your most important consideration when it comes to position – it’s simple - the more sun, the more flowers. Regular watering is required while plants are becoming established and drip trays are highly recommended as they contain the run-off (always a good option with balcony plants!) It just didn’t feel like it was really going to happen, so I was sort of running around going, ‘That’s not going to happen. Sorry, it just probably isn’t going to happen.’ Because movies have made more money and have not gotten sequels, so I didn’t expect it to happen,” Kendrick said in an interview with the “Today” show. 11 August – Chris Hemsworth It was Hemsworth who got Ron Howard involved in In The Heart Of

August Facts
August is the 8th month of the year and has 31 days. Birthstone: Peridot Flower: Gladiolus Zodiac signs: Leo and Virgo In the original Roman calendar, the month of August was called Sextilis. This was because it was the sixth month of the year. Later, after January and February were added to the calendar, it became the eighth month of the year. At the time the month had 29 days. When Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar in 45 BC, two days were added giving the month 31 days. The month was later renamed Augustus in honour of the first emperor of Rome, Caesar Augustus.
