January Facts

H

appy first month of the new year! January may seem boring compared to the holiday madness that comes with December, but this is so not the case. Read on for some interesting facts that you may not have known about January.

1. January is named after the Roman god of gateways, Janus, who has two heads! He is portrayed with two heads because one of them looks back to the last year, while the other looks forward to the new year. 2. I bet most of you are now familiar with Disturbed’s version of “The Sound of Silence.” However, I bet you didn’t know that this song was the number one song in the U.S. 52 years ago this month. The famous duo, Simon and Garfunkel, are responsible for the original track that was featured on their album titled, “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” 3. The official birthstone is the garnet. The name “garnet” comes from the Latin word “Garanatus,” which means “seed like,” in reference to pomegranates. This reference makes sense because small garnets resemble the bright red seeds you find inside a pomegranate. 4. The official flower is the carnation. Different colours of this flower signify different meanings. For example, a white carnation symbolizes pure love and good luck, while a light red carnation is symbolic for admiration.

2

5. “January King” is the name of cabbage grown native to England that is super tolerant to the cold weather. 6. The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus aka America’s favourite zombie killer was born on January 6th! 7. More couples separate or divorce in January than in any other month. (This fact is a bummer, sorry about that!) 8. This month is considered National Soup Month in the U.S.! You can celebrate by picking up a French onion soup at your local Woolworths. 9. The Anglo-Saxons called this month “Wulfmonath” because it was the time of year when hungry wolves came scavenging at people’s doors. 10. Batman the TV series debuted on the 12th of this month in 1966. 11. Yet another heartthrob has graced the world with his presence in January. The legendary Orlando Bloom was born on the 13th! 12. Hollywood’s favourite blonde, Marilyn Monroe married Joe DiMaggio on January 14th 1954.

espite his name, the Australian Shepherd originated in the western U.S., not Australia, around the time of the Gold Rush in the 1840s. Originally bred to herd livestock, he remains a working dog breed at heart; the Aussie, as he’s nicknamed, is happiest when he has a job to do. He can be a wonderful family companion if his intelligence and energy are channelled into dog sports or activities.

Bred to be pushy with livestock, Australian Shepherds can and will take the dominant role in the home if you don’t give them firm and confident leadership. This makes them a poor choice for first-time or timid owners. Like many herding dogs, Australian Shepherds are by nature loyal to their family but standoffish with strangers. They need early socialization — exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences — when they are young. Socialization helps ensure that your Aussie puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling him in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking him to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbours will also help him polish his social skills.

Or he might invent his own job: herding the kids, either yours or the neighbours’; chasing cars or other animals; or taking your house apart. If you do not have the time or energy to train and exercise the Aussie on a daily basis, he is not the breed for you. But if you are interested in competitive dog sports, the Aussie is the one. This agile, medium-size dog with the docked or naturally bobbed tail is a top contender in all levels of obedience, agility, fly ball, and herding tests. He is also successful in such canine careers as guide dog, hearing dog, assistance dog, police dog, and search and rescue work. You can even teach an Aussie to help you with chores around the house, such as picking up dirty laundry off the floor and bringing it to you. You will probably have to fold clean laundry Watching an Australian Shepherd round up a flock yourself, though. The Aussie ia a real looker who of sheep is a beautiful sight. Every Student Should Know

I

t’s that time of year again and we can hear the school bells ringing! It can be hard to adjust from the lazy days of holiday to the busy and fast paced ones of the school year. Here are eight tips to get back into school mode and start this year off right!

Tip#1

Have the Proper School Supplies that you need for your classes!

Tip#2

Get a Diary!

The school year is such a busy time! Between taking I highly suggest getting folders and books with test, doing homework, attending activities, patterns and designs to make note taking more and school events it can be really hard to keep fun. Most schools have already sent a stationery track of everything. By keeping a diary, you can better manage your time and know what requirement list out last year. Make sure that you have to accomplish. Having a diary will you get the specified supplies so that you are definitely help you with time management. able to keep up with the class work and stay Time management is key to being successful organized. and staying on top of everything you need to do!

Tip#3

Know Every Subject’s Deadlines

Knowing what each teacher expects of you is important for being successful. Teachers will typical announce deadlines and assignment requirements in class. Write these down and keep them in a safe place – diarise the dates immediately. Knowing when you have papers and projects due is important for passing and keeping up your grades. Having all relevant dates handy will allow you to plan ahead and give yourself proper time to complete every assignment and get great grades!

8

Community Ch@ Magazine

Tip#4

Do Not Procrastinate

Tip#5

Know What is Expected of You

This is something that we have all been guilty of in the past and have learned the stressful repercussions. A habit is created in three weeks so if you study for every subject you’re taking daily in 21 days that will be a new habit for you. Dedicating a little bit of time every day to the subjects you are taking is definitely going to positively impact your grades and make you a better student!

It is very important to know what your teachers are expecting from you. Pay attention to what the teacher is saying about the workload of the class and what they are hoping for you to get out of it. Teacher are supposed to want you to succeed so most likely they will provide you with what you need to do to thrive. Knowing their expectations and achieving them will help your year start smoothly. Always remember that communicating with your teachers is key for understanding their expectations.

Tip#6

Get Involved

Getting involved with your school community is great because you can pursue your interest and meet peers who have the same and similar interest as you. Many studies have shown that students who are involved in sports and school activities are able to achieve higher averages. If you enjoy playing sports, try out for the school team. If you are a musician or actor, then join your school band or drama club and share your talent with your fellow peers. Join clubs that you are interested in and attend all the meetings. If your school doesn’t have the sports you play, a club you want to join, or a musical or theatre program then talk to your school administrators and see if you are able to start your own! It is amazing to have something that you are passionate about and enjoy doing so never be afraid to pursue your interests.

Tip#7

Learn What Type of Learner You Are

Tip#8

List of academic goals

Everyone is individual and so is the way you learn ! There are three main types of learning styles which are auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic. Knowing what type of learner you are is going to help you be a better student and have better studying habits. When you are able to determine the type of learning style that is best for you, you will find better results when you are studying and it will result in higher test scores! Do some research and determine the type of learner you are so you can personalise your studying.

Write out a list of goals that you want to achieve for the upcoming school year! Do you want to make the lead role in the play, get that spot on the hockey team, improve your grades, you can reach all the goals you set for this year! When you write down every goal you are able to plan and realize what you need to do to prepare for them. Having that list can be a driving and motivating force to help you work to achieve those goals.

Every new school year is an opportunity for a fresh start, new friends, and to make it count. You have the potential to make this year one of the best ones yet!

his beautiful specimen tree provides dappled shade and is suitable for large gardens, avenues and parks. It is valued by farmers, providing shade and shelter for stock. it excellent for firewood but exceptionally difficult to work. This handsome South African tree is one of the largest of the Acacias with its rounded canopy and widely spreading branches. It occurs naturally in Limpopo (Northern Province) and the North-West, where it can be found growing in open and wooded grasslands, often near streams. It is believed to be an indicator of sweet veldt that retains its nutritional value in winter. In the wild it provides invaluable shade for wildlife of all kinds and is grazed by many animals, including giraffe, kudu and elephant, helping to disperse the seeds. Monkeys are especially partial to the pods and like to take cover in its thorny branches, hence its common name. Many birds prefer to nest in this tree because of the protection it offers and myriads of insects visit the flowers, attracting insect eating birds. It is also a butterfly host plant. It is fast growing and varies in size from 8 to 30m tall, according to the region in which it is grown. The Monkey Thorn survives hot and dry conditions, thriving in dry, frost-free summer rainfall regions. It is hardy to frost if it is covered in winter until established. Plant it in full sun and in fertile soil that drains well.

his agile and secretive raptor is often overlooked. Although some people regard hawks as unwelcome garden visitors, they play a vital ecological role by preying on slow, weak and aged individuals. The female African Goshawk is considerably larger than the male with brown rather than ash-grey upperparts; both have yellow eyes and a dusky-ochre cere (a waxy fleshy covering at the base of the upper beak) that distinguishes the species from the Ovambo Sparrowhawk, Little Sparrowhawk and Shika, all of which have a bright yellow cere.

14

The African Goshawk occurs from Ethiopia and Eritrea, South through Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern DRC, Zambia, Malawi and Angola to South Africa. In Southern Africa, it is scarce to locally common in NorthEastern Namibia (including the Caprivi Strip), Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. It generally favours forest, suburban areas and stands of alien trees, such as Acacia in the Western Cape. They are resident and largely sedentary, although juveniles disperse from their parent’s territory when they become fully

Community Ch@ Magazine

independent. The Goshawk mainly eats birds, supplemented with mammals and lizards, doing most of its hunting from perches concealed by dense vegetation so that it can ambush its prey. Pairs rarely hunt cooperatively at large aggregations of animals; such as bat roosts. These monogamous, territorial solitary nesters, perform a courtship display in which either the male, female or both of them together, fly in an undulated flight while calling loudly, sometimes finishing with a steep dive. The nest is built mainly by the female, consisting of a stick platform thickly lined with green leaves, such as pine needles, lichen and mistletoe. It is typically placed on a branch away from the main trunk of a tree, especially if it has dense foliage, although it may also

build it on top of an old Hadeda ibis nest, sometimes taking over the nest of a Little Sparrowhawk instead of building its own. Egg-laying season is from July-December, peaking from September-November. It lays 1-3 eggs, which are incubated mainly or solely by the female for about 35-37 days, while the male feeds her regularly at the nest. The chicks are fed by both parents, leaving the nest after about 30-35 days but remaining in the nest tree vicinity for another six weeks or so. The young become fully independent roughly 1-3 months after fledgling. Not threatened, although in Zimbabwe it is threatened by pesticide contamination, while in the Eastern Cape its range has decreased to habitat loss.

Special Moments These are stories, those special moments, when some of our friends are re-homed after spending a very long time at Wet Nose. During their stay at Wet Nose, these dogs received continuous “tender loving care” from our dedicated kennel staff; they were exercised in our “doggy runs”, taken on walks, played with and even did some agility for fun and mental stimulation; but nothing beats finally getting a forever home.

Stevie and Jerry

Lennox

Stevie was rescued in Bapsfontein at 1½ years old on 01 February 2011. His kennel mate, Jerry was rescued from Witbank at 3 years old on 07 July 2011. After almost 6 years together at Wet Nose, Stevie and Jerry were adopted together on 01 January 2017.

Lennox was rescued on 10 September 2013 at the age of 3 years. After spending just over 4 years at Wet Nose, Lennox has finally found a loving home. He was adopted on 22 November 2017.

Maisie

Jumps

Maisie was rescued from a puppy mill on 01 December 2012. After spending 5 years at Wet Nose, she also finally found a loving home when she was adopted on 06 September 2017

Jumps was rescued on 12 March 2012 at the age of 2 years. After spending 5½ years at Wet Nose, she has finally found a home when she was adopted on 26 June 2017.

Savannah

If you want to live with a sweet, quiet lap cat, don’t get a Savannah. This is an active, adventurous feline who enjoys life in the fast lane. 18

Community Ch@ Magazine

Her athletic body allows her to jump to very high places, and her questing spirit leads her to take well to walks on leash, seek out water to play in, and thoroughly explore her surroundings. This is a confident, alert, curious, and friendly cat. While some cats are retiring sorts, most Savannahs are gracious hosts who will greet your guests with aplomb, as well as close companions who will want to spend time interacting with you. Be sure you have a well-developed sense of humour if you live with one of these cats; they are not above playing jokes on you. It takes a highly intelligent person to outwit a Savannah. You may need to switch faucet styles to prevent them from turning on their own private waterworks, or attach childproof locks to keep them out of cabinets. Don’t forget to protect breakables. Put them away where the Savannah can’t knock them over as she makes one of her famous leaps, and ensure electrical cords are protected from gnawing kittens. Provide a Savannah with toys that will stand up to rough play and interactive games that will challenge her mind. To live happily with a Savannah, plan to spend plenty of time interacting with her. Be sure she has interesting toys to occupy her when you’re not around. Reward her when she does things you like, and redirect her energy and interests when she does things you don’t like. Protect special belongings by putting them out of reach. If all of this sounds like too much work, choose a different cat. Savannahs come in several different colours and patterns: black, brown, or black spotted tabby; black silver spotted tabby; and black smoke. Most have solid black or dark brown spots on golden, cream, sandy, or white

backgrounds. They stand out for their bold, solid markings, which can be round, oval, or elongated. Some Savannahs have what’s called a marble pattern, in which the spots resemble an elongated bull’s-eye. Because domestic shorthairs figured in their ancestry, some Savannahs come in colours and patterns that aren’t described in the breed standard, including chocolate, cinnamon, blue, red, and colourpoint. Savannahs that are non-standard colours can be registered but not shown. The Savannah’s triangular head is supported by a long neck and topped by large, wide ears. The medium-size eyes can be any colour. Nose leather ranges from pink to black, but black Savannahs must have solid black nose leather. A Savannah has a medium-length tail. If she were an athlete, the tall and lean Savannah would be heavily recruited by all the best basketball teams. Her unusual height comes from her long-legged serval ancestor. It takes a Savannah approximately three years to reach adult size. A kitten who looks average in size may rocket up in height after she’s 3 months old. She usually achieves her height in the first year and then her body fills out over the next couple of years. Interesting fact: the back legs are slightly longer than the front legs. Both pedigreed cats and mixed-breed cats have varying incidences of health problems that may be genetic in nature. The Savannah is generally healthy, however, and does not have any known genetic problems. Cosmetic flaws may keep some Savannahs out of the show ring, but they don’t affect her health or her ability to be a great companion.

GRACE is freedom Part 23

By: Johan Jordaan

When we read Jesus’ job description we see that He came for our freedom. Our freedom is very important to Him. Let’s take a look at His job description as given to us in Luke 4:17-19 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (NET) It’s Jesus Himself quoting from Isa 61. What He is reading to the people from the scroll is His purpose for coming to earth. When we examine the text we see that it is mainly concerned with freedom. Firstly, good news to the poor; this good news sets you free as we’ve seen. Then release to the captives. These captives are not in a physical jail but they are captive under the religious system of the time – the Law. Next is sight to the blind. Again it is not physical blindness because He only healed a few blind people, no He came for spiritual blindness and when that is removed you are free. Next He sets free those who are oppressed by Satan; freedom again. Lastly is the year of the Lord’s favour. In that year, every fiftieth, slaves were freed, land was returned to the original owners (economic freedom) etc. Again it speaks of freedom.

24

We can say that His job description is a freedom charter. Later in His

life He makes this statement: John 8:36 So if the son sets you free, you will be really free. (NET) The Son came to make us free and when He does it we are really free. Our freedom is His priority. Note that we as sons are free (otherwise you’re not a son!) but we can also set others free. But what kind of freedom is He talking about? Let’s see: • Freedom from the shackles religion. (Matt 4:18) • Freedom from poverty. (2Cor 8:9) • Freedom from disease. (1Pet 2:24) • Freedom from fear of death. (1Cor 15:55) • Freedom from condemnation (hell). (Rom 8:1) • Freedom from a guilty conscience. (Heb 10:22)

Community Ch@ Magazine

• Freedom from Satanic oppression. (Luke 4:18)

desire and then the ability (Phil 2:13). 2Cor 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is present, there is freedom. (NET)

Unfortunately, due to lack of space I cannot go deeper into these points but please read the references – they are self-explanatory. Please note that sons are free. That is a defining characteristic of sons. albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Born in Brixton, South London, Bowie developed an interest in music as a child, eventually studying art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. “Space Oddity” became his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart after its release in July 1969. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of his single Starman and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie’s style shifted radically towards a sound he characterised as “plastic soul”, initially alienating many of his UK devotees but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the numberone single “Fame” and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg, and released Station to Station. The following year, he further confounded musical expectations with

the electronic-inflected album Low (1977), the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that would come to be known as the Berlin Trilogy. “Heroes” (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had UK number ones with the 1980 single “Ashes to Ashes”, its parent album Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps), and “Under Pressure”, a 1981 collaboration with Queen. He then reached his commercial peak in 1983 with Let’s Dance, with its title track topping both UK and US charts. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), the Goblin King Jareth in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped concert touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with the release of The Next Day. He remained musically active until he died of liver cancer two days after the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016).
