Celebrating
2 Years of Awesome
After running a small, hard copy magazine in the Pretoria East area for two years we decided it was time to spread our wings, June 2016 was the launch date for our all-new Community Magazine – Community Ch@. Being passionate about bringing something positive, light-hearted and caring to the people of Pretoria East we decided the best way forward was to digitise our magazine. Not only is a digital magazine kinder to the environment, it would provide advertisers with a cost-effective advertising platform. With those goals in mind, the decision was cemented. Initially, we had our reservations. We were not a 100% sure that a digital platform would gain the same attention as a hard copy alternative and some of our original readers and advertisers openly criticised the change. But, here we are, two years down the line and stronger than ever. For the last two years, we have strived to make sure that every issue of the magazine surpasses the one before, constantly introducing new contributors and advertisers to keep our readers entertained. Listening to our readers and advertisers we have expanded our horizons and succeeded in maintaining amazing growth in our distribution figures. Thank you for being a part of the journey, keep reading, keep communicating, join us and together we will achieve another year of AWESOME! If you would like to be a part of our success, drop us an email and don’t forget to enquire about our AWESOME Advertising Specials – valid for the month of June.

Editor’s message
ith every issue of Community Ch@ Magazine, my goal is for it to be exponentially better than the previous issue. Though this may be a maddening notion, it’s an incredible motivational tool. It accelerates my desire to improve, not just the magazine, but my own personal knowledge and skills. Our June issue this year marks the magazines second birthday (Can you believe it’s two years already?) and looking back on the last two years, I have taken some major leaps forward. There has been an amazing improvement in all aspects of the magazine and you, the readers, have awarded my efforts along the way. Your support and constant feedback have helped me learn and improve with every issue. Thank you for sharing the last two years with me! The month of June has us wrapped up for winter, feeling the blues while we wish for the return of spring. Not being a winter fan myself, I battle to escape those winter blues, I suggest a cuppa hot chocolate, while you turn to page18 for some pretty good reasons to enjoy winter. This article will certainly prove that winter is not that bad after all. Enjoy this month’s issue and keep sharing your thoughts (featzmags@gmail.com) Happy Reading

June 5th – World Environment Day World Environment Day was established in 1972 during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Its aim is “encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment”. Since its inception, WED has developed into a global platform for raising awareness and taking action, and it is celebrated in over 100 countries. Year after year, “the aim of World Environment Day is giving a face to environmental issues while making people active agents of fair and sustainable development; raising the awareness on the importance of community in environmental action; promoting partnerships to ensure a safe, thriving future for nations and populations”.

Plastic trash is a serious problem for our ocean, and especially all the animals that call it home, but together we can be part of the solution. This year let World Ocean Day remind you why using plastic shopping bags is not a convenience, but rather a major environmental problem.

Why Celebrate
Father’s Day?
F
ather’s Day is considered extremely important as it helps to acknowledge the contribution of fathers to individual families and to societies at large. Besides observance of Father’s Day provide children with an opportunity to express love and respect for their fathers. The sentiment goes a long way in strengthening the fatherchild relationship and consequently in the emotional development of a child.
Her father Henry Jackson Smart singlehandedly raised Sonora and five of her siblings after the death of her mother during childbirth. When Sonora attended a Mother’s Day Sermon in 1909, she thought that if there is the day to honour mothers then there should also be a corresponding day to honour fathers. Sonora worked relentlessly for years to ensure that the idea of Father’s Day becomes a reality. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge first The idea of celebrating Father’s Day recognized Father’s Day. Though traditionally fathers are seen more as a provider and guide for children, the scenario appears significantly changed in family culture today. Many people laughed at Sonora Dodd when she gave the concept of having a Father’s Day, as traditionally, only mothers are regarded as the sole nurturer of a child. The role of the father is often relegated to a secondary status as compared to a mother. But all of us know that fathers are just as important for a child as the mother is. If mothers are the heroes of child rearing, the significance of fathers in the development and emotional well-being of a child is no less. Children depend on their father for their spiritual, emotional, physical, financial and social wellbeing. For daughters, father is the ideal man in the world and also the first man they adore, while for sons, father is an idol and the strongest man they aspire to emulate.

Father’s Day give us the opportunity to express thanks to our Daddy for all their unconditional love and affection. Observance of Father’s Day makes fathers feel that their contributions are acknowledged in the society and also by their children. They feel proud of themselves! Besides by celebrating Father’s Day, children come closer to their father. Most often children take the love of their parents for granted. Celebrating Father’s Day makes them ponder for a while on the important role their father plays in their life. This helps them appreciate the selfless care and protection provided by their father and hence they become emotionally closer to their dad. Children should take full opportunity of the day and express their gratitude with all their heart. The best way to do so is to do small things that dad appreciates, giving him a well thought out gift and by saying “I love you.”

Although there is much to celebrate; in some cultures, survivors and their families face the challenge of stigma and discrimination because they have had childhood cancer. This often makes it difficult for the survivors to resume their lives after the lengthy treatment. Meet Zhakier Adams a 21-year-old who is a childhood cancer survivor from Manenberg, Cape Town. “I was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 13. I remember in 2010 just after the World Cup, I attended Primrose Park Primary School and each class had to work in the garden to plant seeds and water the garden. It was during this class when I first lost balance and couldn’t walk or stand for a few minutes. I didn’t pay much attention at the time. But this occurred endlessly for a few days, to a point where I couldn’t stand or walk at all.
I was admitted to the hospital and while waiting for a doctor to attend to me, I passed out and woke up in ICU. I woke up and saw my mother crying and still didn’t know what was wrong with me. But my parents knew. Thereafter, I was in and out of the hospital for months. I went through all kinds of treatments; radiation therapy, chemotherapy, x-rays and blood transfusion for 3 long years. It was during this time that my family and I met CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. I did not stay at a CHOC House because I lived near to the hospital, but CHOC supported my family emotionally, we received care bags, transport funds, food parcels and all the support that they offer to families and kids in the wards at Red Cross Hospital. During the time I was on treatment, I attended camps with other kids that also had cancer. The camp was called Just Footprints, and I am now a facilitator at the Just Footprints camp. I have been in remission for 4 and half years now, and I am first of all very grateful to the Almighty my parents and family and to CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation for supporting me through my journey. I am part of the CHOC survivor/volunteer family and I jump at every opportunity to get involved to support CHOC and children with cancer. ,” shared Zakier.
At the same time, my mother fell ill as well. My parents decided that both of us should go to the nearest doctor. The doctor examined me and he picked up all the symptoms of cancer. The doctor gave us a letter to Jooste Hospital for blood tests. That evening the doctor at Jooste hospital called my father, informing him to At CHOC we have a survivor’s group immediately take me to Red Cross programme called SOLID that not only Hospital. shares positive life experiences with the

French Bulldog
T
he French Bulldog originated in England and was created to be a toy-sized version of the Bulldog. The breed was quite popular among lace workers in the city of Nottingham and when many lace workers emigrated to France for better opportunities, they naturally brought their little bulldogs with them. The French Bulldog thrived in France and Europe, and his charm was soon discovered by Americans as well. The United States saw its first French Bulldog at the Westminster Kennel Club show in 1896. The breed was quickly nicknamed “Frenchie, and it is still an affectionate name that is used today.
15
Bat-eared but oddly beautiful, the French Bulldog has a unique appeal. Aesthetically, other breeds undeniably are more glamorous and showy, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what many behold in the French Bulldog are the attributes that make this breed one of the best companion dogs in the world today.
The French Bulldog is small but substantial in build with a powerful muscular body. He sports a short easycare coat to accompany his easy-going personality. The Frenchie likes to play, but he also enjoys spending his days relaxing on the sofa. That love of play and relaxed attitude carry over into their training sessions. French Bulldogs are intelligent, and training them is easy as long as you make it seem like a game and keep it fun. They are free thinkers and are not an ideal breed for competing in obedience or agility although some have risen to the challenge. This freethinking approach can also lead to a stubborn nature, and if they decide to dig in their heels there is no budging them.

for long periods, the Frenchie is not the breed for you. This is a dog who enjoys lavishing love on his human companions as much as he loves the same treatment in return. They generally get along well with everyone, including children. They can, however, be territorial and possessive of their people, especially in the presence of other dogs. Socialization is a must for this breed, but with their easy companionship, this is an enjoyable task.
Frenchie’s are loving companions who With a nature that is both humorous and mischievous, the French Bulldog thrive on human contact. If you want an outdoor dog who can be left alone needs to live with someone who is

French Bulldogs do not need a lot of exercise, but they do need daily walks to keep them at a healthy weight.
French Bulldogs do not handle heat very well and need to be monitored on hot days to ensure that they don’t overexert themselves.
French Bulldogs can be easy to train, but they can also be stubborn. Be firm and patient when training this breed.
If you value cleanliness the French Bulldog may not be the dog for you, since he is prone to drooling, flatulence and some shedding. He can also be difficult to housetrain. French Bulldogs can be a quiet breed and are not known as a breed that barks frequently although there are exceptions to every rule. Because they don’t tend to be excessive barkers, French Bulldogs make exceptional apartment dogs.
Although it is important to always supervise young children and dogs when they are together, the French Bulldog does very well with children. French Bulldogs make wonderful watchdogs, but they can become territorial. They also like being the centre of attention, which can lead to behavioural problems if they are overindulged.
French Bulldogs are companion dogs and thrive when they have human contact. They are not a breed that can be left alone for long periods or left outside to live. To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store.

Reasons to Love Winter in South Africa
W
hether you’re a summer or winter baby, there are just some things that are better in winter. Yes, you summer lovers can have your beaches and cocktails, but we’ll take our scarves, cuddles, fireplaces, and movie nights. Who can turn down a discounted holiday away from the crowds? Many accommodations have lower rates during the winter season when fewer people are willing to travel, and quite a few even offer further discounts with winter specials!
You may have heard it before, but there is no better time to enjoy game viewing than in winter when the bush thins out and loses its colour, improving visibility considerably. There’s no tall grass for the animals to hide in, and they also tend to congregate more around the waterholes and rivers, which makes spotting them in winter a breeze. We love curling up in front of the fireplace or braaing with friends

Those who get a thrill out of adventure sports will agree that most of these activities are better in winter. Surfing and other water sports are better in Cape Town and Durban when the waves are bigger and the water is warmer, paragliding and abseiling are fantastic when the days are clear and the winds are calmer, and whether you believe it or not, white water rafting is better during the cooler months when the rivers are fuller and don’t forget our ideally clear weather for skydiving.

Millions of sardines, sharks, dolphins, seals, and birds congregate in a feeding frenzy that is a marvel to watch from land, sky, or sea. The cooler weather is fantastic for hiking, making for a much more pleasant outdoor experience.
Ever wondered why you eat more when it’s cold? Well, our bodies are forced to expend more energy to keep us warm, therefore increasing our appetites. This is another reason why winter is so great – because you can enjoy a variety of tasty foods, from soups to pub grub, and because of the layers, you don’t have to worry about putting on a few extra kilograms!
Winter is the best time to plan a spa stay and enjoy a little TLC when your body is likely feeling a little frazzled and neglected.
Staying indoors is a simple pleasure we can all enjoy in winter. We can be extremely lazy without having to feel guilty about wasting a sunny day.
It’s not often South Africans get to see snow, so when the mountain peaks become sprinkled with soft white snow, we’re already planning a trip to see it.

While whales can be spotted along the entire coastline, the Hermanus coast is considered to be among the best in the world to view whales from. Warm beverages are perfect for winter. coast coral tree Erythrina caffra Thunb.
Erythrina is known as the red genus, and E. caffra is widely loved for its warm red to scarlet-coloured flowers, which appear from the cold winter months through to spring. Its popularity can be ascribed to its ease of cultivation and long flowering period. The coast coral tree is an ideal garden plant and, because of its unique appearance, it has continued to attract the attention of botanists, horticulturists, nature lovers, and the general gardening public for many decades. Erythrina caffra is a medium- to largesized deciduous tree, 9-12 x 7-11 m. Its size depends largely on the climate and soil conditions. This species forms a round-headed, spreading canopy and has a beautifully light
green appearance when in leaf. Trees may even reach a height of 20 m in coastal and forested regions where the conditions are optimal. Some of the largest and most beautiful specimens grow in the Addo National Park’s Alexandria Forest where, next to the yellowwoods, they are the tallest trees. The trunk and branches are grey, sometimes set with short, sharp prickles. As with all other erythrinas, the leaves are typically trifoliate (three leaflets), which are broadly ovate (egg-shaped) to elliptic (oval and narrowed to rounded ends, widest at or about the middle), the terminal leaflet being the largest, 80-160 x 80-180 mm. The lateral leaves are slightly smaller and without hairs or prickles. The leaflet petiole (leaflet stalk)

is up to 160 mm long and with or without prickles. The leaves closely resemble those of a sister species, E. lysistemon (sacred coral tree), which is why it was for many years thought to be the same species. When not in flower it can be rather difficult to tell the two species apart. The flowers are spectacular and are produced before the leaves appear. They are carried in large clusters at the ends of thick, fleshy stalks. Superficially they are shaped like cockscombs. Flowering starts from winter and carries on throughout spring. The flower has a short, broad, standard petal, the lower half of which curves upward to expose the stamens, which give the flower a bewhiskered appearance.
found in various soil types from wet, well-drained, humus-rich soils to dry, clayey soils. The distribution is from the Humansdorp district to Port Shepstone and inland to about 57 km into the Albany district of the Eastern Cape. Further north it is found in the Hlabisa and Lake Sibayi areas of Zululand where it is over 400 km away from its southern populations. This is quite a surprising distribution range.
Both birds and flying insects pollinate coast coral trees. The flowers of Erythrina caffra do not produce any fragrance, so it is only their colour, in combination with the reward of nectar which is produced in abundance, which attracts pollinators. Birds such as Red-winged Starlings, Bulbuls, Eastern Golden Weavers, Sunbirds, Orioles, and many others feed on the nectar The fruits are dark, cylindrical pods, which are up to 65 mm long. Borers also sometimes attack trees and do considerable damage, particularly to young trees. The dead wood of the coast coral tree is soft and is an ideal nesting place for birds such as the Pied Barbet and Cardinal Woodpecker, while the hollow trunks are often inhabited by swarms of bees. The branches are armed with prickles, which might serve as protection to herbivores especially when trees are still young. Fully grown trees are fairly drought resistant and can withstand several degrees of frost. In areas where there is severe frost, it may well grow but flowering is unlikely.
Good habits formed at youth make all the difference – Aristotle The future of all nations depends on the youth and according to reports the youth represents an average of 34% of all people on earth. They have the power and destiny to change a nation and as such is a powerful part of the population. As we celebrate Youth Month however, we need to also make the younger generation aware of the immense responsibilities they have towards the nation and their own families. It is so important that the youth play a part in the creation of sustainable development in the country. Development needs to change the economy and social landscape of the country and should bring equal opportunities to all members of the community.
to give impetus to changing the way society thinks.
It is also important to look at the educational system. In India they have changed what is taught to what is required to be successful – an approach that will benefit them in years to come. When you teach according to people’s interest you do not loose talent. How many lawyers, accountants and engineers do we need versus our need for entrepreneurs, creative minds and environmental scientists?
The youth also have the opportunity and responsibility to explore new avenues. We need them to help us figure out ways in which to use the talent and potential in the upcoming generations. 1. Education: Any country needs educated, well informed and responsible leaders. So do you actively encourage your child to grow his/ her knowledge? It is important to provide learning opportunities for the children by teaching them about nature and the environment, introducing them to different cultures so they develop and understanding and appreciation for other people. It is not only important for children to finish school and learn basic academic skills – this process also teaches you to think and reason, and in a changing environment like South Africa we need thinking leaders.

3. Nothing will happen in our community if youths don’t work to accomplish their role but we need to help them find their “true north”. By giving our children a sense of direction we can guide their thoughts and plans for the future – but it is important to make them part of the decision-making process. We need to also make them aware that tertiary study is not a right but when you have the opportunity for study it should be used to the fullest.
This brings me to effective parenting and the very important role we as parents and caregivers play in the lives of children. We are central to the emotional wellbeing of the children – 2. Although both parents are important, the father figure is often linked to healthy development in both boys and girls. It is any man with whom a child can connect on a deeply psychological level and who generates emotions generally felt toward one’s father. Where the mother is often the consistent factor in a child’s day: nurturing, transporting and feeding them, the father is the one that will play and wrestle a bit and bring fun at the end of the day. A father is also the person teaching the child that treating a woman with dignity is a strength. A strong man will show his boys how to treat a woman if you are upset with her and his daughters will see that a
standard in a relationship cannot be ignored and this will make them good future partners and parents as well. It is good for a father to also cheer his son on but to also see excellence in your daughters. Many successful women had supportive dads! A girl who is adored by her father internalise this good experience and knows what it means to feel special. She knows intuitively how to pick a good partner and how to feel and give love. It will be less likely that she will get involved in an abusive or unhealthy relationship because she has a positive role model.

Diederik Cuckoo
28
The Diederik Cuckoo is common in large parts of Southern Africa, occurring across sub-Saharan Africa, generally preferring forest edges, mesic savannah, closed woodland, semi-arid shrub-lands, parks and gardens, occasionally moving into Mopane woodland. These interAfrican migrants return to South Africa around October when their breeding season starts. Diederik Cuckoo gets its name from an onomatopoeic rendition of its persistent and loud deed-deed-deeddeed-er-ick call of the territorial male which you often hear during summer. Like many birds, Diederik Cuckoo are dimorphic, that is, males and females differ in appearance. As is common the male birds have a brighter, more “flashy” colouration with more distinctive markings, while the females are plainer and more camouflaged. Despite being plainer, the females are still quite colourful and have a beauty of their own.
The Diederik Cuckoo are brood parasites; the female lays its eggs in the nest of a host species and then leaves the host to raise the chick to fledgeling. Hosts are mainly weavers and bishops including widowbirds, but they can also parasite the nests of a number of small birds. In South Africa, 24 host species are known. Food consists mainly of caterpillars or similar larvae. Interestingly, the caterpillars that they eat are poisonous to most other birds. Diederik Cuckoo males and females have a particularly distinct ritual feeding behaviour. After sighting a female, a male will court the female with song,
and then he will fetch her a caterpillar. During this ritual feeding, the male and female engage in a vigorous dance of bobbing up and down with wings partially spread. In a successful encounter, the caterpillar is passed from the male to the female, with an extended time when both birds hold one end of the caterpillar. Eventually, the male lets go and may fly off to fetch another one.
The female will lay a single egg in a host nest. Before laying the egg, the female waits for the potential host to leave the nest and then flies inside, presumably to inspect it. She may throw the existing eggs out of the nest, or carry them to a nearby perch and eat them. Afterwards, she lays one egg. Once the egg is laid, the female leaves the host nest. Leaving the “foster” parents to hatch and raise her offspring. A female may lay 3 – 5 eggs in a single day and as many as 20 – 24 eggs in as many different nests during the breeding season. Hosts birds are not unaware of the Diederik Cuckoo and will often mob them en mass.
Within the first three days of hatching, the Cuckoo chick eats any other eggs or chick. The Diederik Cuckoo chick is fed by the host in the nest for 19 – 22 days, and remains with its host parents and is fed by them for about 21 more days.
How do I keep my weekends healthy?
by Chanel Serfontein
1. Plan your workouts
W
e all know the story: Monday through Thursday you’re the picture of discipline. You’re prepping your meals, you’re sweating it out, you’re drinking green tea by the gallon, and you feel great. Come Friday happy hour, everything goes down the drain. Between social commitments, eating out, disrupting your routine, and finding a million things more enjoyable than hitting the gym, it can be an absolute mess sticking to your healthy intentions. To help you stick to your goals and stay focused, here are some tips for getting through the weekends as healthfully as possible:
Sticking to an exercise regime is making a serious commitment to yourself, and to your body. You need to treat your workouts like appointments, at least until it becomes an absolute habit. Schedule your workout times, and stick to them. Plan ahead and be realistic. If you know you’re going to have a late night, don’t plan a workout for 5am the next day. Rather try to find an afternoon class that you can attend.
2. Invite someone to workout with you Fit nights out and Saturday morning yoga classes are becoming all the more popular. People are choosing to replace their usual social events with healthy bonding sessions. Obviously, we’re not telling you never to go out and relax, but there are options for socializing that don’t involve food and alcohol. Going for a Sunday hike with your
girlfriends can be a great way to get your exercise and visiting in at once. This will also help to keep you accountable, so you’re less likely to bail on a workout.
3. Be adaptable and do your research when it comes to food When you’re eating at a restaurant, it can be easy to feel unsure about what you should be eating. You’d planned a meal of lean protein and veg, but nothing on the menu looks like what you’d make at home. While it’s good to have a general idea of what you’d like to be doing diet wise, you need to learn the basics of nutrition so that you can make an informed decision about what to order when eating out. For example, knowing that salad dressing contains way more sugar and fat than you were planning on ingesting, means you’ll know to order a salad with dressing on the side. Similarly, the different ways of preparing proteins (frying, grilling, etc.) can greatly influence their caloric content and their healthyfactor. It also helps to have an idea of what is on the menu at a restaurant before you go. Usually you’ll be able to find an online menu.
4. Drink tons of water
32
We all know hydration is
essential. Try to keep a bottle on hand over the weekend, and where possible order water instead of alcoholic drinks/cool drinks. This will help keep your healthy eating on track. There is also a ton of research that shows thirst plays a major role in over-indulgence.
5. Get enough sleep Keeping a regular sleep schedule will help you to stick to your workouts and your healthy-eating routine. Messing with your circadian rhythm can also have a negative impact on your health. Too little sleep can actually promote the release of cortisol which could contribute to overeating and fat storage.
6. Eat breakfast Try to start each day off right, with a healthy breakfast. If you’re meeting friends for brunch, try to have a snack before you go to avoid overindulging later. Routine is a big factor when it comes to any healthy eating and exercising plan. In the beginning it can feel like a chore, and it can feel as though it’s disrupting your social life and taking too much effort. However, with enough time, it will become a habit and you’ll find your groove. Keep as consistent as possible and the results will come!

Repentance
ow often do we hear the words ‘repent’ spoken over Christians and the world? It is proclaimed as an absolute and irrefutable pillar of our faith. But not only does this condemn us but it also keeps ‘preChristians’ from accepting Jesus as saviour. Now people are quick to point out that we should not shy away from speaking the ‘truth’ by proclaiming a popular gospel. But what if the real truth is that our gospel is meant to be good? (The gospel of grace was never popular anyway.)
shift in your thinking about things (in our case – the gospel). And that is the problem with the current thinking about repentance – it is Old Covenant based. (Many theologians will differ from this view of repentance because they are also brainwashed by an Old Covenantal mindset.)
Once you grasp this principle it has the potential to free you from a guilty conscience. Repentance does not involve remorse over sin so that God has to forgive you. Repentance refers to the process of changing or renewing your The first thing that we must realise is mind. Fear and guilt was prominent that repent is not the same as confess under the Old Covenant but was although most people seem to confuse completely removed under the New the meaning of these words. Confess Covenant (but we imported them from refers to the act of going before the Lord the Old Covenant and this steals our joy). and acknowledge your sins – asking for The good news here (you should have forgiveness. I have in a previous month guessed) is that repentance under the explained the futility of this and also that New Covenant is also (like righteousness) Paul never refers to it. a gift of God. Yes, it is not something that But what is repentance? The word used you achieve but rather something that for repentance in Greek is ‘metanoia’ you receive. The Old Covenant worked which is widely accepted as meaning with obedience to commandments but ‘to change your mind’. John Sheasby, in the New Covenant works with faith in his sermon ‘New Covenant Repentance’ God’s promises. It leaves no room for (Seed to seed July 2016) explains that remorse. There is room for joy though! it does not contain the idea of sorrow, Let us examine some New Testament remorse or regret like the Hebrew verses about repentance: word used for repentance (under the Old Covenant) did. In the New Acts 5:31 God exalted him to his right Covenant it simply refers to a hand as Leader and Saviour, to give change of thinking or a paradigm repentance to Israel and forgiveness

of sins. (NET) Note that Jesus gives repentance to Israel. Under the Old Covenant repentance was your responsibility, and impossible to attain. Now it becomes a gift. Grace just gets better the deeper you dig!
But this gift as we saw was for Israel. What about us, the gentile believers? Acts 11:18 When they heard this, they ceased their objections and praised God, saying, “So then, God has granted the repentance that leads to life even to the Gentiles.” (NET) (Please read the whole chapter to get the full picture.) Does it say that Cornelius felt remorse before he could be granted repentance? Is sin even mentioned? Did he confess his sins or say the sinner’s prayer? No, while Peter was speaking the Holy Spirit fell upon everybody. This blows the Old Covenantal idea about sin and confession right out of the water. Repentance is now a gift like the Holy Spirit and righteousness. God is a Father and as such a giver. God’s goodness underlies the New Covenant and because we do not understand His goodness (holiness – yes!) we cannot understand the gospel of grace; it is way too good for a ‘not so good’ God (as people see Him). We still remember the God who exterminated men, women, children and livestock. But we forget that this happened under the Old Covenant which forced Him to be like that. The key to grasping grace is changing your mind about who God is; and where can we learn about Him? Where is His picture in the Bible? In Jesus! Another aspect of repentance under the Old Covenant (that we imported) was that we repented from (sin, disobedience etc) but under the New Covenant we repent toward (Jesus, truth etc). We do not turn away from our rebellion but toward Jesus. Acts 20:21 testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus. (NET) Sin is not a problem for Celebrating 2 Years of Awesome
us anymore (for us – not the world) therefore we do not repent from sin but toward God.
The New Covenant is not preoccupied with sin but with life. Jesus said that He gives life abundantly. But we feel guilty enjoying life. We are taught to live with a purpose. Rubbish. Our purpose is to know and enjoy our Daddy. This work ethic of working long hours and running the rat race is not life either. We must rather enter into His rest. 2Tim 2:25 Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth. (NET) (It should actually read repentance toward knowledge of the truth.) Again we see that it is a gift and this time toward knowledge or truth. The only time that the New Covenant tells us (as believers) to repent from is to repent from dead works! (Heb 6:1) What are those? Trying to do things that Jesus already achieved like attaining righteousness, trying to please God by reading the Bible more, praying more, tithing etc.
I hope that this sets you free even more. Remember that we who believe in Jesus already please God. Our purpose is a relationship with Him, not some ministry or serving people or God. If He gives us something to do (as He probably will) then we do it of course, but that does not become our purpose or identity, no knowing Jesus is our focus and our purpose.
Next month we touch on the thorny issue of judgement – and again it’s good news!

A Once Rare Novelty, Now a Major Environmental Challenge
The Plastic Shopping Bag
A
rare novelty in the 1970s, plastic shopping bags are now an omnipresent global product, produced at a rate of one trillion a year. They are showing up in the darkest depths of the oceans to the summit of Mount Everest to the polar ice caps – and creating some major environmental challenges. How did this happen? 1933 – Polyethylene, the most commonly used plastic, is created by accident at a chemical plant in Northwich, England. While polyethylene had been created in small batches before, this was the first synthesis of the material
36
that was industrially practical, and it was initially used in secret by the British military during World War II. 1965 – The one-piece polyethylene shopping bag is patented by the Swedish company Celloplast. Designed by engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin, the plastic bag quickly begins to replace cloth and paper bags in Europe. 1979 – Already controlling 80% of the bag market in Europe, plastic bags go abroad and are widely introduced to the United States. Plastic companies begin to aggressively market their product as superior to paper and reusable bags.

1982 – Safeway and Kroger, two of the biggest supermarket chains in the United States, switch to plastic bags. More stores follow suit and by the end of the decade plastic bags will have almost replaced paper around the world. 1997 – Sailor and researcher Charles Moore discovers the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the largest of several gyres in the world’s oceans where immense amounts of plastic waste have accumulated, threatening marine life. Plastic bags are notorious for killing sea turtles, which mistakenly think they are jellyfish and eat them.
02 – Bangladesh is the first country in the rld to implement a ban on thin plastic gs, after it was found they played a key e in clogging drainage systems during astrous flooding. Other countries begin follow suit.
11 – Worldwide one million plastic bags e consumed every minute.
17 – Kenya bans plastic bags, making it e the most recent of the more than two zen countries that have sought to reduce astic bag use through fees or bans.
18 – #BeatPlasticPollution is chosen as the eme of World Environment Day.
June in your garden
The so-called ‘bleakness of a midwinter garden’ is a total myth as many plants (whether indigenous like aloes, or exotic like camellias), flower with abundance in winter. Pretty foliage reig supreme too, as the colour spectrum of plants like conifers, coprosmas, nandinas and leucadendrons intensify spectacular in cool temperatures.
Life is a Garden
Smart greens for mass planting
Add a permanent ‘wow’ factor to your garden with the following top sellers as recommended by GCA garden centres across the country:
Scotch moss (Sagina subulata ‘Aurea’) – a very popular grass alternative which forms a mosslike carpet with bright, neon yellow foliage. Very dainty white flowers appear in spring. Perfect for full sun and remember, it does not like to be too dry or too wet. Braai rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Barbecue’) – Evergreen and with and upright growing habit and strong, straight stems which are perfect to use as skewers for the braai. The leaves have a remarkable flavour and aroma and the blue flowers appear in mass. Perfect for low hedges.
Tanika grass (Lomandra longifolia) – this tough and drought tolerant ornamental grass is evergreen with soft, fine foliage in a fresh green shade. Small yellow flowers appear in spring. It is frost resistant, enjoys sandy soil, and is a perfect companion plant to provide shade to, and cool others in a meadow garden. This highly recommended grass reaches a height and width of 60cm to 65cm. It’s perfect for mass planting in full sun or light shade.
Flax Lily (Dianella revoluta) – These compact, tuft-forming grass-likes, have blue-grey foliage and produce masses of purple flowers in summer. They prefer full sun, don’t require much water and need very good drainage. Perfect for mass planting in modern landscapes with a mature height and spread of only 30 - 40cm.

Rose care for June
June is a perfect month to take leave from your rose garden as the plants are dozing, needing very little care.
plants on a tray filled with a little water and some pebbles for the pots to stand on.
Water once a week or once every two weeks. Folks in winter rainfall areas can still spray every two weeks against rust and blackspot. Feeding the plants in subtropical areas will encourage more flowers. Also, spray against aphids. Plant new roses or replant old ones if necessary. Bedding besties
Primroses (Primula Polyantha) or Fairy Primula (Primula malacoides) are synonymous with winter and spring gardens. These tough annuals grow quickly and easily in spots with semishade. They are ideal for mass planting amongst spring-flowering bulbs, for edging, or in containers. Dainty stems with white, rose, pink, lavender or purple flowers appear well above woolly bright green leaves. They reach a height of approximately 20 – 25cm. Intensely cheerful and top trend!
The winter-flowering Persian violet (Exacum ‘Princess’) won’t stick around forever, but while it is there, it will capture your heart. It has a mounding growth habit and produces a cloud of purple, lavender blue, or pure white flowers with a delightful fragrance. Keep it in bright, indoor light and ensure that the soil is always moist. To keep a humid atmosphere around it, place the
It is prime time for pretty cyclamens too. The silver marbled foliage perfectly sets of the bright and cheerful blooms, resembling dainty butterfly wings, and are available in a wide range of colours. Cyclamens prefer bright, indirect light. They are fussy about water – allow the plants to dry out between watering, but not to the wilting stage. Rather water gently from the bottom, than dousing the whole plant, to prevent rot. Clean up old leaves and spent blooms. Time for beautiful lilies The bulbs of all kinds of lily hybrids are for sale now and should be planted immediately after you have purchased them. Plant them in bold clumps between winter annuals or small shrubs and groundcovers to keep their ‘feet’ in the shade while allowing their ‘heads’ to grow into full sun. Hammer in some bamboo plant stakes next to the planting hole of each bulb to be able to stake them as they grow.
June prune
You can start pruning deciduous fruit trees, like peaches and apricots, shrubs and trees for quality fruit, neatness and shape at the end of the month. Do not prune those that will flower in spring, like Cape May Bush (Spiraea), mock orange, ornamental prunus and bushveld bride (Dombeya rotundifolia).
Regularly pinch back winter annuals like pansies, violas, and snapdragons to promote bushy growth and more flowers.
Conifers grow actively in winter and can be lightly sheared to encourage denser foliage. This is the time (May to end Aug) when the conifer aphid is very active and it is best to drench the plants with a suitable insecticide which contains either Imidachloprid or thiamethoxam as active ingredients.
Cut back ornamental veldt-like grasses such as pennisetum hybrids, muhly grass, Aristida juncea junciformis and zebra grasses.
Think about the birds
Top up bird baths regularly with fresh water and hang a few pine cones filled with a mix of peanut butter and bird seed amongst the branches of your trees. Also invest in a feeding table on which you can leave pieces of fruit for those feathered friends who love sweet stuff and might not find it from a natural source in the neighbourhood. If you are not sure how to go about attracting birds to your garden, visit your nearest GCA garden centre for advice.

Hindenburg Disaster
T
he Hindenburg disaster occurred on May 6, 1937, as the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. Of the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), there were 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crewmen). One worker on the ground was also killed, raising the final death toll to 36. The disaster was the subject of spectacular newsreel coverage and photographs. The event shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era.
of May 3, on the first of 10 round trips between Europe and the United States.
Except for strong headwinds that slowed its progress, the Atlantic crossing of the Hindenburg was otherwise unremarkable until the airship attempted an earlyevening landing at Lakehurst three days later on May 6. Although carrying only half its full capacity of passengers (36 of 70) and crewmen (61, including 21 crewman trainees) for the accident flight, the Hindenburg was fully booked for its return flight.
The airship was hours behind schedule when it passed over Boston on the morning of May 6, and its landing at Lakehurst was expected to be further delayed because of afternoon After opening its 1937 season by thunderstorms. Advised of the poor completing a single round-trip passage to weather conditions at Lakehurst, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in late March, Captain Max Pruss charted a course the Hindenburg departed from over Manhattan Island, causing a public Frankfurt, Germany, on the evening spectacle as people rushed out into the

street to catch sight of the airship. After passing over the field at 4:00 p.m., Captain Pruss took passengers on a tour over the seaside of New Jersey while waiting for the weather to clear. After finally being notified at 6:22 p.m. that the storms had passed, Pruss directed the airship back to Lakehurst to make its landing almost half a day late. However, as this would leave much less time than anticipated to service and prepare the airship for its scheduled departure back to Europe. Around 7:00 p.m. local time, at an altitude of 650 feet, the Hindenburg made its final approach to the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. This was to be a high landing, known as a flying moor because the airship would drop its landing ropes and mooring cable at a high altitude, and then be winched down to the mooring mast. This type of landing manoeuvre would reduce the number of ground crewmen but would require more time.
was dropped first, followed by the port line. The port line was overtightened as it was connected to the post of the ground winch. The starboard line had still not been connected. A light rain began to fall as the ground crew grabbed the mooring lines. At 7:25 p.m., a few witnesses saw the fabric ahead of the upper fin flutter as if gas was leaking. Others reported seeing a dim blue flame – possibly static electricity, or St Elmo’s Fire – moments before the fire on top and in the back of the ship near the point where the flames first appeared.
At 7:25 p.m. local time, the Hindenburg caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames. As the tail of the Hindenburg crashed into the ground, a burst of flame came out of the nose, killing nine of the 12 crew members in the bow. There was still gas in the bow section of the ship, so it continued to point upward as the stern collapsed down. The cell behind the passenger decks ignited as the side collapsed inward. Remembering
Scotty Moore
44
27 December 1931 – 28 June 2016
Scotty Moore was one of the great pioneers of rock guitar. As the guitarist on Elvis Presley’s Sun recordings, he may have done more than anyone else to establish the basic vocabulary of rockabilly guitar licks, as heard on classic singles like “That’s All Right,” “Good Rockin’ Tonight,” “Baby Let’s Play House,” and “Mystery Train.” Moore took the stinging licks common to both country music and blues, and not only combined elements of country & western and R&B, but added a rich tone through heavier amplification. His concise, sharp phrasing and knack for knowing both what to play and when not to overplay were perfect accents to Presley’s vocals. Although his Sun riffs may be his most famous, Moore in fact continued to play on Presley records until the late 60s and laid down some of his best accompaniments to the star on RCA discs. Unsurprisingly, the best of these were in Elvis’ early RCA years in the 1950s, when Moore added more wattage and recklessness to his riffs to come out with classic solos on Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, and Too Much, among others. Moore worked as an engineer, occasionally crossing paths in this capacity with unexpected clients such as Ringo Starr, Tracy Nelson, Mother Earth, and the Holy Modal Rounders. He got
back into playing guitar again, after a layoff of about 25 years, on recordings and live shows with Carl Perkins in the early 90s. In 1997, he did a tribute album to Elvis Presley with D.J. Fontana, All the King’s Men, which included appearances by Keith Richards, Levon Helm, Jeff Beck, and Ronnie Wood. The presence of such heavyweights was a testament to the influence of Moore on other guitarists, not just rockabilly ones, but also rockers of a later generation, such as Richards. The Rolling Stones guitarist, indeed, was quite vocal and enthusiastic in his praise of Moore, even saying that it was hearing “Heartbreak Hotel” that made him want to devote his life to playing guitar. Moore’s life story, both with and without Elvis, is recounted in the autobiography That’s Alright, Elvis, co-written with James Dickerson. Scotty Moore died at his Nashville home in June 2016 at 84 years of age.

Movie Night
PHSG’s first ever movie night took place on 11 May. The Greatest Showman was played on a big screen which was erected on the soccer field. Over 1200 people braved the cold with blankets, sleeping bags and hot water bottles. The unexpected turnout meant long queues at the food stalls which sold boerewors rolls, pregos and a variety of treats including popcorn. Coffee and hot chocolate were also a firm favourite on the night. The wait for food did nothing to dampen the excitement of those attending with PHSG learners pleading for another movie night in the near future. The Parents’ Association, who had organised the event to raise money for the Choir to attend the World Choir Games, were delighted with the success of the evening. They have promised to hold another one, and now that they know how well it will be attended, will do their best to rope more parents into helping out at the stalls. Funds from the next movie night will be used for a different project with the hope that over time they will be able to make a notable contribution to various school activities.
Debating
The Junior and Senior Debating teams are midway with the SACEE Gauteng Championships. The teams have each won a debate and lost one. The motions have been of a wide variety from “This house believes Prince Harry and Meghan should be allowed a private wedding with no media coverage”, to “This house would impose a sin tax on meat”.
CHOOL FOR GIRLS National All Girls Festival 2018 DEBATING
16 Schools participated in the debating competition. PHSG placed 4th overall. PUBLIC SPEAKING
Olerato Kgotle (junior speaker) placed 7th overall and Caitlin SchroderBeneke (senior speaker) 5th
CHESS
PHSG chess team placed 4th out of 10 participating schools. HOCKEY
The first pool game for the PHSG 1st hockey team was a local derby against AHMP. The girls played as a team, defended well and utilised their opportunities which resulted in a 1-0 win against AHMP. This gave the team confidence which was evident in the rest of the pool games. PHSG ended 2nd in their pool and was ranked top 8 for tournament for the first time in 5 years. PHSG 1st hockey team placed 8th out of 18 participating schools. This was a very successful festival for our hockey team.
TENNIS
A young tennis team participated in the National All Girls Festival and placed 12th out of 16 schools. The tennis team played against the top competitors at the festival but this only motivated them to play even harder and they did not make it easy for any of opponents. NETBALL
The 1st netball team played 5 pool matches on the 1st day of the festival. The 2nd day they played 3 matches against some of the toughest competition at the festival but that only motivated them to play even harder. PHSG 1st netball team placed 8th overall which is unfortunately 3 places lower than last year but is definitely not an indication of the effort and heart they played with. The netball team played 10 matches in total and won 6 of the 10. SQUASH
The squash team played 7 matches of which they won 2. The competition was very tough but the squash team played their hearts out in every match. The team placed 7th in the festival which is in line with the results from 2017 and 2016.

Kids Activity for June
Life is a Garden
Celebrating Father’s Day - hands-on and outdoors
Perfect for those who enjoy sitting in the garden or gathering round dad’s braai, the grass pot-stool will keep your children excited to be seated! They’re easy to carry, they look really cute, and the children can each have their own one.
In light of Father’s Day, we bring you this exciting activity which can be done with dad (no green fingers required!) and the beautiful end product can be used again and again, spending time with dad around the bonfire or at the braai.
To get started, you will need: - Galvanised steel bucket - 2 bricks
- Drainage stones
- Some potting mix
- A tray of grass plugs (this can be purchased along with the potting mix, at your local GCA Garden Centre) Get started:
1. Place the bricks inside the bucket
Place the bricks side by side inside the bucket with their smallest side down. This is the best way to ensure the bricks don’t extend out of the bucket.

The grass pot-stool can be used as a seat. It is portable and can be moved to a new spot. It can also be decorated with gnome and fairy features, although this will naturally compromise its function as a seat. Add a handprint to the side of the bucket in a unique colour as a personal signature.
