Editor’s Message Welcome to our Mother’s Day issue, this issue is dedicated to all Mothers – as a mother, I know all you do, and wish you a happy, guilt-free Mother’s Day, full of spoils. Mother’s Day is my favourite holiday of the entire year. Sure I love the festive family holidays like Christmas and New Year’s, the sweet sentiment of Valentine’s Day, and Easter weekend, but Mother’s Day feels like a day that’s all mine. Mother’s Day is truly the only day of the year that I feel I am given a license to take the day off. Even more than my birthday somehow, Mother’s Day feels to bear no expectations other than for me to enjoy myself and my family. Please join me in welcoming Naomi from Natrix, who has come on board as the contributor of our new monthly travel piece. If you need help planning your next holiday, look no further than Naomi and her team at Natrix. May is a full month with a lot happening, from Worker’s Day on the 1st to World No Tabaco Day on the 31st and not forgetting Mother’s Day. Please take a moment to read the article on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis – a commonly misunderstood illness. (Page 12) As always I would like to thank our advertisers for making this magazine a reality, and remind our readers to please support the advertisers. Until next month – keep sharing our magazine – Happy Reading! May 2017

Your mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself. She’s the cool hand on your brow when you are not feeling well, she’s your breath in the air on a cold winter’s day. She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colours of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning. Your mother lives inside your laughter. She’s the place you came from, your first home, and she’s the map you follow with every step you take. She’s your first love, your first friend, even your first enemy, but nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space…. Not even death. Unknown 4

The History of Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is a holiday honouring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and traditionally involves presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts. May 2017

e live in an age where we design everything around us to suit our every need. That even extends to our pets. Our featured dog this month is the relatively new Pomsky. This designer pet was developed to satisfy pet owners who longed to own a Husky but simply didn’t have sufficient space and energy for the breed. The Pomsky is bred by crossing a Siberian Husky with a Pomeranian. You might ask yourself how that is even possible; breeding is done through artificial insemination to avoid the dangers of breeding these two very different sized dogs. The Pomsky is a great alternative to the Husky, but be warned they come at a price. The Pomsky is a hugely popular designer dog, and the puppies are the highest priced for any cross breed. This breed is new, they are hard to find and the cost of artificial insemination all add to this little furballs’ price tag.

for one of these pups, a lot of breeders are jumping on the band wagon and there are a lot of scams around. The Pomsky is a fun, energetic, mischievous and playful dog that is also intelligent and confident. They are loving and affectionate to their family and will behave in a protective manner. Do not be surprised if your Pomsky is less than welcoming to strangers. They also tend to be wary around small children. This dog loves to chew, so when you add one to your family, be sure to supply a lot of chew toys to avoid your new little bundle from chewing on your furniture. The Pomsky, while a medium sized dog is rather energetic and will need a fair amount of exercise. If they do not get

based training and early socialization and training are important. They are moderate shedding dogs who shed often, so you can expect to have hair on your clothes and furniture if you have one of these pups in your home. Daily brushing will help reduce the need for vacuuming. The Pomsky is a good watchdog and you can expect him to warn you of any intruders. They are occasional barkers and sometimes they will howl like the Husky.

This new design dog is very desirable and the need for artificial insemination adds to making them an expensive dog. There are very few breeders around that are doing it right, so if you come across someone offering lower prices, be suspicious. Avoid online transactions and insist on visiting and meeting both parents before you make the investment.

simple leaves are bright green, sometimes with a slight bluish tinge on the upper sides. The veins of the leaves are a translucent yellow colour, forming very clear patterns as they run through the leaves. The leaves are usually scattered up the branches or crowded at the ends of the branches. In very cold areas the trees are deciduous, but in warmer climates, they
only lose their leaves for a short time at the end of winter. The tree flowers in early summer, anytime from November to December. The new flower buds look like lollipops, with big round heads on long thin stems at the end of the branches. The green heads pop open with the many small flowers in tight bunches inside, looking like pink fluff balls. For about three weeks the tree flowers in profusion. The tiny black seeds are formed in the bottom of the little flowers and are ready to collect about a month or two after flowering. After flowering, the green cup shaped bracts that held the flowers, become hard and brown, remaining on the tree for many months. The dried “flowers can be used for decorations.

May is awareness month for
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis a serious yet misunderstood illness. by Nomsa Gamedze (Photo) & Retha Viviers
ME goes by many names, the most well-known being Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It is a difficult illness to diagnose due to its lack of a known biomarker, which means that sufferers are widely disbelieved and stigmatised by the general public and the medical community. Most basic diagnostic tests come back normal, and the wide spectrum of severity confounds the process further; some sufferers can still work, whereas others cannot leave their beds or even hold conversations. Typical symptoms include fatigue, post exertional malaise (PEM)—a serious flare up of symptoms after exertion—unrefreshing sleep, cognitive difficulties, and muscle and joint pain. To minimise the impact of PEM it is advised that sufferers pace their activities carefully and take rests often. This makes working difficult. There are several other symptoms that occur with varying frequency in the population with ME. Due to the scepticism surrounding ME, the community suffers in various ways. ME patients lack of credibility with doctors means that many patients will be continually misdiagnosed or remain undiagnosed for years on end. People with ME are often misguidedly encouraged to ‘push through’ their symptoms by both doctors and loved ones, with devastating consequences. Most
sufferers have to stop working/ studying and face poverty as a result, while living in isolation has become a reality for many. However, there are promising solutions to some of these problems locally and overseas International research seems to be getting closer understanding this neurological and immunological illness and is working towards finding a biomarker to diagnose and treat the illness. THE ME CFS Foundation South Africa NPO was founded • To provide healthcare and counselling services for those patients who cannot afford them; • To raise awareness of ME/CFS, this includes educating Medical Practitioners in order to enable proper diagnoses and appropriate treatment; • To advocate for the rights and interests of persons living with ME/CFS; and • To form a network with overseas ME organisations and contribute to research.
The services provided by the Foundation include financial assistance where needed for symptomatic treatments as well as basic necessities where sufferers are without any form of income.

The African Hoopoe The daily visit I receive from a lone Hoopoe in my garden is the inspiration behind this month’s bird choice. I often watch this regular visitor roaming my lawn, and I can’t help but wonder if he is lonely. The African Hoopoe is widely distributed throughout South Africa, so no matter where in the country you might find yourself, you have a good chance of seeing one of these unusual looking beauties. They are not particularly sociable birds and it is generally found either alone or in pairs.
and under-tail coverts are white, the eyes are black and the legs and feet are dark brown. The Hoopoe will grow to a length of between 25 to 29cm with a wingspan of 44 to 48cm and weighs around 66 to 68 grams when fully grown. The Hoopoe darts around the ground collecting insects and small reptiles – like lizards – which they find in the ground and in animal faecal matter. They disrupt and turn over fallen leaves and plant matter and probe the ground for insects and food, then use their sharp bills to locate their prey. They will also consume small amounts of seeds and occasionally berries, but not in large amounts, preferring insects and beetles.
The Hoopoe is instantly recognisable by its “Crest” of feathers, its chestnut colouring contrasted by the black and white stripes on its wings and tail. The crest is briefly raised when the bird is unsettled or startled. The Hoopoe’s bill is While the Hoopoe isn’t a sociable bird they are monogamous, however, this only long, dark and narrow and slightly down – or de-curved. Hoopoe is a cavity nester, and the nest is always chosen and protected by the male. They lay between four and seven eggs over a period of a few days. Once the female is finished laying all her eggs, she alone will incubate the eggs for 14 – 16 days. Once the eggs are hatched, the male does the hunting for the chicks for the first week of their lives and then the female gets involved in feeding her young. Some interesting Hoopoe Facts: • The Hoopoe is named after its call. • The Hoopoe is the national bird of Israel. • Hoopoes do not make a typical nest – they don’t gather twigs and find a nice nook on a tree branch – they look for holes in tree trunks, cliffs and walls. They will even move into a well-placed birdhouse. • Baby Hoopoes are far from helpless

– They have the ability to secrete a stinky odour to ward off predators. They can also ward off predators by strategically aiming their droppings and they have been known to use their bills and wings to fight off intruders. • The Hoopoe’s beak is its most important tool – used to forage through vegetation, dig into the ground and quickly feed nestlings mid-flight. They also use their beaks aggressively in territorial fights. • The Hoopoe’s flight resembles that of a butterfly – it’s large, round wings moves like waves, only crossing half way. • Hoopoes engage in something called courtship feeding – the male presents insects to the female for her to eat – a type of “nuptial-gift”. • The Hoopoe can often be seen bathing in the sun and sand.

Communication in Marriage – how to have a constructive argument Despite the best intentions and honed inter-personal skills, you will argue. This is normal. The classic stages of group dynamics hold in marriage too. Forming, storming, norming and performing except in a marriage the cycle never ends, storming, norming and performing, storming, norming and performing, storming, norming and performing, storming, norming and performing. When a married couple tell me that they have been married for 40 years and have never had an argument I am immediately sceptical. In my opinion they are either being dishonest (to create a good image) or they have a VERY hierarchical marriage and one of them is totally dominant and the other totally subservient. My advice here is two-fold. 1.
Just listen. d. On the second appointment, they report back with their thoughts and feelings relating to the issue. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RESPOND. Just listen. I love this because it forces good communication. What we as humans do when someone gives us feedback is we instinctively react with our point of view. We want to defend ourselves. We react so quickly that we do not honour our partners sharing, opinion and feelings. This leaves them feeling unheard and frustrated.
Don’t bottle things up. I often ask to Jax after a heated discussion why she allowed her feelings to get to explosion stage instead of sharing Here is the truth about most arguments: earlier. Express your feelings (ideally YOU ARE BOTH RIGHT. From her in Adult -> Adult mode). perspective she is right and from his perspective he is right. Reality is very 2. Warning. This is incredibly difficult for both of you. It takes a lot of self- grey. Truth is very grey. Who decides what is right and wrong? Is one man’s meat not control. another man’s poison? Who is right about a. Make two appointments with religion? The Buddhist, the Muslim or the your spouse 24 hours apart. For Christian? Who is right about politics? The example, at 8pm on Wednesday Socialist or the Capitalist? night and 8pm on Thursday the next night. In my opinion, there are two types of arguments: b. Zero waste is the ideal “dream” but is it and then to disposal, we could achieve achievable? Let’s first define zero waste to zero waste but involves a constant and very landfill from zero waste. strong commitment to eliminate waste. Zero waste to landfill means the diversion of waste away from landfills by ways of rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and then remove. Ways of achieving these diversions from landfills for example would be by participating in recycling programs and projects as well as conducting alternative ways of recycling through composting or waste to energy plants and bio-digester plants.
The challenge for zero waste is however far more complicated and challenging as to zero waste to landfill. Challenges in this process would for instance be changing legislation, producers taking more responsibility, cleaner production systems and technology, better waste management designs for the environment, better correlation between government and the private sector in the waste industry, to mention a few. These challenges are Zero Waste on the other hand is far more therefore more long-term driven. complex and is a design principle for the 21st Century that seeks to redesign Unfortunately we are far from zero waste the way resources and materials flow and most certainly we are not yet geared through society. already explained in previous publications, we need to start at our homes. We need to change our attitude and the way we think when buying and consuming as well as start educating our children who will eventually carry the dream forward. For example, start to participate in recycling projects and programs, whether it is in your community, the school or your work environment, it is absolutely crucial that we contribute towards a global goal in saving our planet. The sad part of it all is that our natural resources are deteriorating every second as we speak and our landfills filling up. It is not a question anymore of what is going to happen. We know what’s going to happen; it is only a question of when. Between 1966 and 1983 Mayol was eight times world champion in the No Limits category and was the first to break the 100m barrier with a dive of 101m in Italy. In 1981 he set the world record for the Constant weight discipline at 61m.
Jacques had a love for the ocean and dedicated his life to the sport of freediving. His philosophy was to explore his limits, he would reach a state of mind of relaxation through yoga, this assisted him with holding his breath for extended periods of time. Jacque’s friend and rival, Enzo Maiorca was the first person to freedive to 50m – shortly after this Mayol reached 60m and so the rivalry continued. They competed in two categories: The constant weight discipline – where the
28
Medical tests showed that during his dives, Mayol managed to slow his heartbeat from 60 to 27 beats/minute – a reflex evident in seals, whales and dolphins. Mayol’s last deep dive was in 1983 when he reached a depth of 105m – he was 56 years old! Mayol had a fascination with dolphins and he worked as a commercial diver at an

Aquarium in Florida. He developed a deep bond with the dolphins and spent a lot of time with them in the water learning to hold his breath for extended periods of time. His nickname was “The Dolphin Man” “My life is inspired by dolphins,” he said. “Dolphins are free creatures in the sea, able to dive to great depths - It’s a matter of retaining oxygen in the bloodstream, keeping it in the cells. I have worked on that through yoga, learning to ionize my air better than most people. Motionless, I can hold my breath for five minutes. In the sea and in action I can hold it up to four minutes. The average person can hold his breath for one minute. “I don’t dive to conquer the elements,” he said. “I melt into the ocean.” Today the No limits record stands at 253m by Herbert Nitsch and the Serbian Branko Petrovic holds the record for holding his breath for 11 mins and 54 seconds! Jacques Mayol died in 2001 – he had no living relatives.

Cat Corner The Balinese was named for the exotically graceful dancers on the Indonesian island of Bali; it is a longhaired variety of the Siamese. It is unknown whether the long hair is a result of a natural mutation or due to cross breeding. While the longhaired Siamese appeared earlier, the cats did not begin to be developed as a breed until the 1940s and 1950s. Today the Balinese is a well-known breed, accepted by cat fanciers associations around the world.
make sure you supply toys to keep him both mentally and physically active. Your Balinese will play fetch and if trained from a young age will happily walk on a leash. Be warned, this cat will very quickly take over the household – in a good way.
While the Balinese and the Siamese may differ in coat length, under the skin these cats are two peas in a pod. The Balinese loves his people. He will follow you around and supervise every move you make – just to make sure you perform tasks to his standards. A Balinese is constantly underfoot, so he might not be the best choice for people who are not steady on their feet, or who walk with the assistance of a walker or a cane.
If you enjoy having someone to talk to all day long then the Balinese will be your best friend. Just make sure you have enough time to spend with this demanding, social cat before you decide to adopt him. The Balinese will not mind staying home alone while you go to work but expect him to demand your attention when you return home at the end of the day. If you work a full day, you might consider getting two cats so they can keep each other company. Identity Crisis
Part 15 Johan Jordaan
Previously we looked at sonship and how He did but in who He was – God’s son. to become a son and heir of God. But that The good news is that we as sons have is all just a lot of theology, what does it that same identity – ‘sons of God’ as mean in my life now? we saw. We do not have to perform to Well as I said previously; we inherit NOW. get that identity; just lay off your servant That in itself is big. But that is not what I hood (renounce the Law and works) and want to focus on this month. This month I become a son. want to look at our identity – the way we Now the world would have you believe see ourselves and the way God sees us. that you are a sinner and that is your We often find our identity in what we do identity. But if you see yourself as a sinner, (farmer, doctor, plumber etc.). But the you will sin. Sinners sin – period. But Paul Bible sees identity very differently; your never calls a follower of Jesus a sinner. identity is established by birth. That is Look at 1st Corinthians where he starts off why the phrase ‘son of’ is used so many by calling them saints and then proceeds times in the Bible (1241 times – KJV). Even to list their sins. You see, the fact that Jesus identified Himself as ‘Son of God’ you sin does not make you a sinner, it or ‘Son of man’. Jesus found His identity does not change your identity. Once a in His sonship and so should we. He was son, always a son. When you start seeing secure in Himself because he knew that yourself as a son your life will change. We His Father loved Him. He knew that He act the way we see ourselves. If you see did not have to do a single thing to be yourself as a dog you will bark. If you see accepted by His Father. When He left yourself as an adulterer that is what you the scene of His baptism His Father said: will do. Our actions do not identify us but ‘This is my beloved Son in whom I am well rather our identity determines our actions. pleased’ (Matt 3:17 KJV). Let that be the way you see yourself. Not the failure that the world might want We are of course also the wife of Christ you believe that you are. No, you are a and therefore we can find our identity in prince (or princess if you will) of our King that. For woman this might be somewhat and as such you will inherit the kingdom easier than seeing themselves as sons. and eventually reign with Him! If you are (But remember that son is simply another appointed head servant in the kingdom, name for heir.) But being the wife of the you are still a servant! The most junior King also makes us royalty. We reign with prince is still far above you and you must Him. We spend eternity with Him. Our obey him. And remember that a servant relationship with Him is an intimate one, can never have the intimate relationship even more so than that between a son with the Father or Jesus that we as sons and his father. We struggle to see our and bride can have – NEVER. It remains relationship with Jesus as this intimate a master-servant relationship. See Gal but that is how the Bible describes it. 4:9 where Pauls shows that we lose the Read Song of Solomon because that is intimate relationship with God when we a very graphical description of this very are servants or slaves. nna Marie Jarvis was born to Granville E. and Ann Marie (née Reeves) Jarvis on May 1, 1864, in Webster, Taylor County, West Virginia. Her birthplace, today is known as the Anna Jarvis House, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Anna was the ninth of eleven children; seven of the siblings would die in infancy or early childhood. The family moved to Grafton, West Virginia, also in Taylor County, later in her childhood. Ann Reeves Jarvis was a social activist, founder of Mothers’ Day Work Clubs, and a unifying force within her community during the American Civil War. Ann was friends with Julia Ward Howe, who had first advocated in 1870 for the idea of a Mother’s Day as a call for mothers throughout the world to work together for peace. As a woman defined by her faith, she was very active within the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church community. It was during one of her Sunday school lessons in 1876 that her daughter, Anna Jarvis, allegedly found her inspiration for Mother’s Day, as Ann closed her lesson with a prayer, stating:
I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it. — Ann Reeves Jarvis

There are Angels God put on this earth Who care for us and guide us. You can feel their love and gentleness As they walk through life beside you. They do great things for us every day They whisper in our ears, They even hold us in their hearts When we are filled with all our fears. They are always there to give a hug And try to make us smile. They treat us with respect and love, they treat us like their child. God blessed me with an Angel, I’m proud to call my own. She’s been with me throughout my Life, been with me as I’ve grown.

DIY Home Spa Treatments for
Mother’s Day That Kids Can Do!
In the spirit of giving back to all the kids who will Google ‘how to do a spa day for my Mom at home for Mother’s Day’ we have found some fun ideas to share using natural products we all have at home. Every mom loves some pampering and what fun to create a special spa experience for her without breaking the bank. I really think kids feel such a sense of pride and gratification when they can do something for their mom by themselves and surprise her too (Dads, are you listening?!). Any of these fun ideas will make for a special day to remember and even if you aren’t a mom, these are great options for your own beauty regimen. They are things learned over the years from natural facialists or massage therapists that remind one that expensive products are not the only way to get a great beauty result or some relaxation! Honey Facial
Lemon Elbow Treatment
Honey is naturally anti-bacterial and gentle to the skin making it a wonderful cleanser or nourishing mask. Apply 1-2 teaspoons of honey to a clean face and allow to sit on the skin for 10 minutes. Moisten fingertips and rub in a gentle circular motion to help exfoliate the skin. Allow the honey to sit 5 additional minutes and wash off with a clean washcloth. Coconut Oil Hand Treatment Coconut oil is a wonderful oil to add to foods and for the body. A simple moisturizing hand treatment is to coat the hands with coconut oil and then put on disposable vinyl gloves (powder free). If you have a heating pad or a hot water bottle, that can be warmed up and placed over the hands to help the oil soak in. Remove the gloves after 10-15 minutes to find supple hands! May 2017
Rough elbows a problem? Cut a lemon in half and rub each half on the elbows. With arms bent, the elbows can be placed in each half to sit while other treatments are going on too for extra help. Cool Cucumbers for Tired Eyes Placing cool cucumber slices on the eyes is known to reduce puffiness, help with dark circles and they are revitalizing and refreshing. Rose-Scented Milk Foot Soak with Cornmeal Scrub Soaking in milk baths dates back to Cleopatra and they’ve been revered through time as moisturizing treatment. The lactic acid is believed to help get rid

of dead skin while the fats moisturize. Adding a few drops of Rose-scented essential oils and rose petals make the experience all the more special. To follow up an exfoliating scrub of cornmeal which was traditionally used by the Native Americans to cleanse and exfoliate dead skin. It is also very invigorating especially on tired momfeet! Supplies: • A soaking container large enough to hold feet and 2 litres of milk without spilling over • 2 litres Milk • Rose-scented Essential Oil • 1-2 Roses, petals removed • Coconut Oil
or herb in a large jug of water or a large glass to serve as a relaxing drink during or after the spa treatments.
• Clean Cotton Socks
Plant-based Milk Smoothie
• 1 cup of coarse grind Cornmeal
Warm the Milk on the stove top or in the microwave (probably a job for Dad!). The milk should not be boiling but comfortably warm as Mom will soak for about 15 minutes. Pour the milk into the soaking pan/container and add 2-3 drops of Rose-Scented Essential Oil and the rose petals. After feet have soaked for 15 minutes, use a handful of dry cornmeal to scrub the feet focusing on any dry skin. Rinse the cornmeal off in the milk bath, and then with clear water from a second container of warm water or with washcloths. Coat feet with Coconut Oil and dry clean cotton socks to allow the coconut oil to be absorbed. Spa Water Drinking fruit and vegetable infused spa-water is hydrating and relaxing. The combinations are endless however, some favourites are: cucumber and lime, mint, and orange. Simply place a few slices of your favourite fruit, vegetable
38
Another great refreshing drink option would be a plant-based milk smoothie. One of my favourites is a BananaPeach Almond Milk Smoothie using Unsweetened Almond Milk. The smoothie recipe uses my favourite smoothie method too; using a frozen banana to make it like a creamy milkshake with no ice. Whipped Cream and Strawberries For a touch of simple decadence, have a bowl fresh strawberries and whipped cream for dipping!
