Editor’s Message Looking at a weather prediction for the month of May it seems Pretoria won’t be seeing anything higher the 250, but despite the cooler weather, we should see a lot of sunshine this month. Personally, I am happy as long as we have blue skies and sunshine. We ran an article in the March issue by Adele Sharman, titled The Importance of Strength Training and I have to send her a big Thank You. In the article, she discussed strength training and lower back pain. Well, I am one of those lucky people who get to spend a very large part of my day behind my desk and I have recently been experiencing regular lower back pain – without ever making the connection. Thanks to Adele’s article the penny dropped, I started increasing my activity level and big surprise my back pain is just about gone completely. Sometimes, issues can be resolved a lot easier than we think – the penny just needs to drop. May is Mother’s Day – I am lucky enough to have two incredible ladies in my life to turn to whenever I need support, knowledge or just a little love – Thank you to Jumanthea and Sylvia for always being there for me. I love you much! Our May issue is filled with a lot of interesting content which I am sure you will find entertaining and informative. Remember we always welcome your good news stories, so feel free to share them with us, and if you would like to be on our cover next month – let us know! Don’t forget to support the charities we feature. This month we highlight the Cansa Bannerthon. Tell your boss about the event, share the article with him or her and suggest your office purchases a banner in time for June 1st. Thank you to all our readers and our advertisers for giving us the opportunity to do what we love doing. As always, we had fun putting this issue together for you, and we look forward to hearing your feedback. Send us an email: featzmags@gmail.com Until next month, happy reading!

World Red Cross Day
The 8th of May, every year is World Red Cross Day. The day celebrates the birthday anniversary of the founder of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant, born in Geneva on the 8th of May 1928. Henry Dunant was also the recipient of the very first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. Red Cross Day is celebrated every year to pay tribute not only to the founder but also to all the volunteers who work tirelessly all year round to help people in need. 3
The month of May started with a five-day weekend – if your boss, like mine, gave you Monday off – so let’s catch up with some facts about the month ahead. • May is thought to have been named after Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility.
MAY FACTS
• The Roman poet, Ovid said May was named for the maiores – the elders – and June was named for the iuniores – youth. • No month of the year either begins or ends on the same day as May. • According to old superstition, you should not get married in May “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” • No United States presidents have ever died during May. • Nine UK prime ministers were born in the month of May, which is more than any other month. • The birthstone for May is the emerald which is emblematic of love and success. • On May 1st, 1931 the Empire State Building officially opened. • On May 14th, 1948 the last British troops left Palestine which led to Israel becoming an independent country. • On May 20th, 1932 the first solo flight by a woman across the Atlantic Ocean was made by Amelia Earhart (featured in Eric’s Corner last month) • On May 27th, 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge was opened in San Francisco. Locally May is Energy Month, Africa Month and Anti-Tobacco Campaign Month. • May 1st – Worker’s Day • May 3rd – Word Press Freedom Day • May 12th – International Nurses Day • May 18th – International Museum Day – When last have you visited a museum? • May 25th – Africa Day • May 31st – World No Tobacco Day And the most import day in May? Well, Mother’s Day on the 13th of May of course!

Childhood Cancer is a life-changing experience, we exist to serve and equip the children, families and community through their cancer journey to keep more than hope alive. The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation was established in 1979 by parents of children with cancer. Having experienced the immense emotional and financial toll that cancer takes they recognised there is more than one victim in the family of a child with cancer. Their aim was to ease the burden on parents facing the same journey by providing access to relevant, accurate information, as well as emotional and practical support. CHOC is the only organisation in South Africa that provides comprehensive countrywide support for children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders and their families. They have a national office, six regional offices, one branch, and twelve accommodation facilities close to treatment centres across South Africa. CHOC relies on corporate sponsors and donations from groups or individuals wanting to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer. “Our comprehensive support improves the well-being and quality of care to children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders and offer families a wide range of psychosocial services and practical support. This includes counselling, emotional support, free accommodation close to treatment centres, transportation to and from treatment centres to ensure that no child abandons treatment, food support as we recognise the financial difficulties families often face and other parental and emotional support. CHOC, the leading childhood cancer organisation in SA plays an advocacy role through cancer awareness campaigns and lobbying. We also train and educate healthcare professionals, healthcare workers and traditional practitioners on the early warning signs of childhood cancer to promote early detection,” Carl Quieros – CHOC CEO explains. CHOC is a brand you trust! Being in existence for thirty-nine years, CHOC has a proven ability to deliver sustainable solutions effectively and is an established brand endorsed by specialists. They have demonstrated visible growth and have proved that they deliver results. Without CHOC, many children – particularly those from lowincome households living far from treatment centres – would not adhere to the necessary but arduous treatment path.
In 2010 CHOC was voted the 7th most trusted and admired ngo in the asK afriKa trust Barometer awards. In 2017 CHOC was selected as the Anchor and Beacon organisation for Africa by Childhood Cancer Internationl (CCI) to assist other childhood cancer organisations in Africa.
Meet Zintle Nxanga one of the many CHOC’s beneficiaries.
In June 2016 my 13-year-old daughter Mbali was diagnosed with leukaemia and began treatment immediately. During the day I was with her at the hospital and later I would go and sleep at the CHOC House in East London because at the time my other son Zenani was 18 months old so I could not stay with him at the hospital. The support I’ve received from CHOC has been amazing, as I am from a small village in Whittlesea, 192km from East London. I had no family to visit me, but I didn’t feel it because CHOC provided me and the children with everything that we needed. What CHOC does for us as parents make us want to be better people because when you receive such kindness and support you are also inspired to be kind and supportive to other parents who are new at the ward. My heart is always filled with gratitude when I think of what CHOC has done for me and my children. To Debbie and Nan from CHOC East London, thank you so much for the kindness that you have shown to my children through this difficult time. To CHOC, we as parents are blessed to have CHOC taking us through this frenetic journey. Thank you once again! Zintle Nxanga

I need my visual schedule and visual supports Just as a person in a wheelchair requires their wheelchair to go about their daily activities, so a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) needs their schedule. People with an ASD often miss out on the subtle social cues that we use every day.
What is visual support Visual supports are used when a child or an adult has difficulty with communication – this can be understanding or using communication. They provide the individual with the support required in order for them to get through their day. This is done by giving the individual structure, i.e. they know what to expect next. There are many ways one can support an individual with an ASD, however, research findings have found that some of the best ways to provide this support and structure are through visual 18
support systems, utilising items such as the visual schedule. A visual schedule can be incorporated in various settings, at home, in the workplace, and even in the community.
Why is it important People with an autism spectrum disorder are, more often than not, visual learners, and therefore if we only provide them with the auditory input, it is not enough. Concrete visuals have been found to be some of the best modes of learning for individuals with an ASD. They help the individual to gain a better understanding of what
is expected of them from the environment. It allows the adult or child with autism time to process the events of their day – this is important, as there may be a processing delay. The schedule is always available for the individual to refer back to, and they don’t need to keep asking about what is going to happen. Not only do visual schedules provide support and structure to individuals with an ASD, they can also provide many different learning opportunities.
1. Literacy The use of schedules must be done in either a top to bottom approach or a left to right approach. Both of these approaches teach directionality – an important skill when learning to read. The schedule will also have a picture and a word associated with the picture – allowing the individual to start associating words with pictures. One is also able to start using the words more and more in the schedules, allowing the person with ASD to become more confident with reading.
3. Promotes Independence Often we need to encourage independent learning, and allow children the opportunity for independence. Schedules are a great way to give learners their independence. This may also help the learner develop a sense of pride and self-confidence.
4. Language Skills are developed The teacher, caregiver or parent can ask the individual questions relating to the schedule. This helps develop conversation skills, particularly back and forth reciprocal skills. Transitions can also be tricky for the individual with an ASD. A schedule can help with this difficulty, as it provides the individual with an idea of what to expect – so there is some predictability in life for them. Often the unknown leaves them feeling anxious. This allows them to predict, thereby hopefully reducing the anxiety.
One could also ask the individual to begin writing out their own schedule, encouraging their writing skills.
2. Numeracy Schedules often have many different activities taking place. The learner is then able to count out their activities.

Scottish Terriers Small Fearless Dogs with a lot of
Personality An independent and stubborn character, the Scottish Terrier dog breed is also quite sensitive to praise and blame. Independent, intelligent and hilarious in his dignified seriousness, he’s a true terrier, which makes him an excellent watchdog. Thanks to those incredibly short legs, he’s not going to train for a marathon with you – heck he won’t even go jogging with you – but he is a perfect walking companion, especially if you appreciate his vocal approach to bicycles. Despite his size, he doesn’t yap; he has a powerful bark that can scare the wits out of the unsuspecting burglar or delivery person.
He totally rocks at agility and earth dog trials – those vermin have to go! You’ll enjoy a rodent-free garden with him around, but watch out for those holes he’s dug. The Scottish Terrier’s character and personality are a bit like the lonely moors of his homeland. He’s a serious guy, not particularly jolly, and he approves of dignity and reserve. He’s opinionated,
20
as well as independent and smart as a whip. He tends to be aloof (but not toward his family). A Scottie doesn’t respond much to people who ooh and ahh over him while he’s out and about. He’s slow to accept anyone outside the family, but his devotion to his own people is legendary. He needs to live in the house because companionship is
his mainstay. Sensitive to praise and anger, he’s good at adapting to the changing moods of a household. When you’re quiet, he’ll be quiet (unless he sees a squirrel); when you’re ready for a walk, he’ll bound outdoors with you. Remember his background: he’s a true terrier. If another dog provokes him, he’ll fight to the end. If other dogs leave him alone, he leaves them alone. It’s important, actually critical, to take your Scottie to socialization classes starting when he’s a puppy. Inviting friends and family over or going to busy places with him while he’s young will tamp down his general distrust of strangers. Left unchecked, that can translate into aggression when the dog is an adult — so start training your Scottie puppy from the moment you bring him home. Scottie Dog Facts You May Not Know • Scottish Terriers are also called Aberdeen Terrier falling under the Skye Terrier umbrella in a group of Highland breeds which include Dandie Dinmont, and West Highland White Terrier. • The First Earl of Dumbarton nicknamed the breed “the diehard.” • The modern breed is said to be able to trace its lineage back to a single female, named Splinter II.
• The first written records about a dog of similar

description to the Scottish Terrier dates from 1436 when Don Leslie described them in his book: The History of Scotland 1436-1561. • Recorded history and the initial development of the breed started in the late 1870s with the development of dog shows. The exhibition and judging of dogs required comparison to a breed standard and thus the appearance and temperament of the Scottie were written down for the first time. • Scotties were exhibited for the first time at Alexander Palace in England in 1879, the following year they began to be classified in a similar way they are today. • Scotties were introduced to America in the early 1890s, but it was not until the years between World War I and World War II that the breed became popular. • By 1936, Scotties were the third most popular breed in the United States.
21
• Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR, the 32nd President of the United States (1933–1945) was the proud owner of Fala “most photographed dog in the world.” • Scottish Terriers have won best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show more than any other breed (except for the Wire Fox Terrier, 13 times), a total of nine times. • The Scottie is the only breed of dog that has lived in the White House more than three times. President Franklin D. Roosevelt with Fala, Duffy and Mr Duffy. Eleanor Roosevelt with Meggie and President George W. Bush with Barney and Miss Beazley. • The Scottie is also renowned for being featured in the popular board game, Monopoly, as a player token. When the game was first created in the 1930s, Scotties were one of the most popular pets in the United States. • Scotties are born with floppy puppy ears. The ears stand up of their own accord, usually by the time they are about 10 weeks of age.

Join the CANSA Bannerthon and Support International Cancer Survivors Day
International Cancer Survivors’ Day is celebrated
during the first week of June to acknowledge and celebrate the courageous individuals fighting cancer. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is promoting the CANSA ‘Bannerthon’, 1 – 6 June 2018 by encouraging all workplaces and businesses to show ‘visual’ support and display a specially printed banner during in the first week of June. Munnik Marais, CANSA’s Corporate Relations Manager says, “One in four South African’s are affected by cancer due to the diagnosis of self, family, loved ones or friends. And this also includes many work colleagues. We spend a huge amount of time at work with colleagues and co-workers and
many of them are cancer survivors. Corporate South Africa is also affected by cancer so this is a great way to recognise the brave fighters.” This initiative, managed by Chapmar Industries, challenges all companies and corporates to purchase a 100 meter long 600mm wide plastic banner, that can be cut up into sections and displayed on perimeter fences, balconies and external and internal staircases for a week or more commencing on 1 June. The colourful banner is printed with the slogan “Support the fight against cancer” and has a cancer ribbon in pink and blue to designate all cancers. Chapmar Industries also manage the large red ribbon plastic banners usually displayed in the first week of
December, creating awareness for World AIDS Day and raising funds for children affected by AIDS. Nick Chapman from Chapmar Industries says, “Now all businesses can help create awareness and recognise cancer survivors by putting up a CANSA banner for International Cancer Survivors’ Day. And how about challenging another three companies in your location to do the same. In this way, you can be the inspiring force in your area. Imagine every company with a CANSA banner on their perimeter fence.” A percentage of each banner sold to companies is donated to CANSA to help them fund their ongoing cancer risk-reduction research and to sustain the care and support programmes. Thanks to these efforts and the awareness campaigns for early detection, there are a growing amount of brave cancer survivors who need to be recognised. By: Elzette Struwig From corsets to camisoles, diet fads have been used through the ages. In 1820, Lord Byron commercialized the vinegar and water diet, which involves drinking water mixed with apple cider vinegar. One of today’s latest diet trends is the ketogenic diet (KD). In actual fact, the KD was already developed in the 1920’s and was used worldwide for the non-pharmacological management of drug-resistant epilepsy1. In modern times, however, the applications of the KD, as well as other low-carbohydrate and high-fat (LCHF) diets are evolving. These applications may vary from weightloss, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Inflammatory Disorders (ID) to cancer (as combination therapy) and so much more. Many individuals who follow an LCHF or KD states that they experience long-term benefits and tempts to make this a lifestyle and not a ‘quick fix’. Many of the ‘diets’ or lifestyles that are applied in the modern world were developed centuries ago. Another example is Banting, this low-carbohydrate diet was already described by William Banting in the 1800s, while in 2018 plenty of South Africans are Banting. 28

The KETO-fad, Fact or Fiction?
As a registered dietitian, who has seen the benefits of the KD in individuals with drugresistant epilepsy and cancer, I do believe there is surely benefits for certain individuals when following some form of an LCHF lifestyle. When I talk about benefits, my very first epilepsy patient was a 2-year-old female who was suffering from GLUT1 Deficiency Syndrome (GLUT-1 DS) and had 10 seizures on average per day and is now completely seizure free for the past 3 years. But what is the difference in applying a the total energy comes from F lifestyle? A narrative review written by Professor Tim Noakes and Johann Windt, which was published in 2016, aims to provide clinicians with a broad overview of the effects of LCHF diets on body weight, glycaemic control, and cardiovascular risk factors while addressing some common concerns and misconceptions2. The conclusion as made from this study states that although LCHF diets may not be suitable for everyone, available evidence shows this eating plan to be a safe and efficacious dietary option to be considered2. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommend a total carbohydrate intake of 45-65% of total energy per day2. Any carbohydrate intake less than 45% of the total energy, is considered to be a reduced carbohydrate diet/ lifestyle2. But why do individuals follow LCHF or Ketodiets? One of the main understandings is due to the leptin and ghrelin hormone balances. Leptin hormone contributes to the feeling of satiety while ghrelin contributes to the feeling of hunger. Leptin levels may be improved by an increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which is often something that naturally occurs in an LCHF lifestyle or KD. Therefore, some individuals suffer from fewer cravings, making it easier to control their calorie intake when wanting to shed some weight. With all the diet trends, I have experienced that individuals will often try something for a short period of time, but it is important to plan for the long hall and find something that is appropriate for the entire family. There is concrete evidence that supports the application of ketogenic diets in individuals with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, in practice, the applications of LCHF and KD remains patient specific. Beneficial responses to any diet are entirely reliant on the degree of patients’ adherence, thus an LCHF diet is only appropriate for those patients motivated to comply and completely grasp the aspects thereof. 1. any of the subjects that I discussed so far keep coming up again and again. That is because it is difficult to discuss a single subject in isolation. These issues are all related and together constitute the gospel of God’s grace. So, also have I mentioned the issue of reigning in life. We are however digging a bit deeper into it in this chapter.
We all want to reign rather than to lose control and be blown around like a wave in the sea. To reign is to be in control; to have dominion over (Oxford Dictionary: Hold royal office; rule as monarch). It’s the domain of kings, but we can and should reign too; like kings over our own lives.
What do we want to reign over? Anything that you can think of: your relationships, your spiritual life, your emotions, your finances, your health, your ministry, you can carry on. You don’t want these things to spin out of control.
So does the Bible really tell us how to get control over these aspects of our lives? Or is it simply a matter of working harder at achieving them; to put your nose to the wheel and grind away?
Yes, the Bible shows a way to reign over life’s small and big issues: Rom 5:17 For if, by the transgression of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the When you reign you are one, Jesus Christ! (NET) stable, like a rock rather Here Paul gives us the than a wave. The waves answer; to reign, we must cannot move a rock that is receive. And it happens well anchored. You become through Jesus. He is the key master of your own destiny. by which we reign. (Some translations have it as ‘reign as kings’.)
So, to reign, we need to receive God’s abundant grace and His righteousness. Now to receive God’s righteousness does not mean that we start living pure and sinless lives, no it simply means that we receive, as a gift, God’s righteousness through faith in Jesus. As Paul says, this righteousness is a free gift, it is not earned, in fact, it cannot be earned because then it’s your own righteousness. And the same argument holds for the abundant grace that we must receive; it cannot be earned as we’ve seen. Grace is an unearned favour. You can only receive it because when you try to earn it you lose it. Grace is for those who know that they deserve nothing before God but it is all His grace and that comes through humility which in turn comes through brokenness. If we can get past this obstacle of trying to earn favour and righteousness,
37
Paul says that we will start to reign. Now, there is a beautiful parallel between what I discussed above and sonship. In both cases, we are compelled to move away from earning and step into grace. Sons are heirs; they do not work for a reward. They operate under their Daddy’s grace. They receive God’s righteousness as a crown. So, when you are a son you already know that you receive everything freely from your Daddy and that you do not earn anything from Him. When you know that you cannot earn anything from God, that leads to humility and thankfulness which leads to receiving and a move into God’s grace. Jesus though remains the key here. He earned so that we can receive. He was deserving; now we are free from having to earn anything. He attained perfect righteousness, now we can receive that righteousness as a free gift. The key to reigning is to, through Jesus, receive God’s abundant grace and righteousness. Does this mean that we are fully in control of every aspect of our lives? Remember that sons are led by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:14). We do not dictate to Him. We follow Him. When we work together and align our 38
desires and goals with His, we reign. He can now give us everything because these things will not rule us, we will rule over them. We do not gloat in ‘our achievements’; we give Him the glory. We partner with Jesus and achieve great things, greater even than Jesus Himself achieved here on earth. To realise this is very humbling and that is a key to receiving.
and through our lives. Keep in mind though that His first goal is for us to have a relationship with Him – the rest follows.
We can feel that this is too easy; there will be hardship even on that road. I do not know about that, all I know is that I see very little promise of hardship for the believer. What I do see is an overwhelming number of promises for our benefit: While we see life as a series promises of health, wealth of ups and downs, we fail to even, and many, many realise that the downs are others, including but not often well-executed plans limited to, His very kingdom on the side our adversary (Luke 12:32). God is good – Satan. When you reign and He plans only good you are freed from that, things for us. If life takes he is stripped of his power us via some rocky sections, over you. Things suddenly remember that we live in an work out and plans come imperfect world and that together inexplicably. people still have free will. That can make life difficult for us at times but in the To me, this sounds like long haul, we will reign reigning. From our position when we learn to receive – of rest, humility and our without trying to earn from identity as sons we reign. Him. And we do it effortlessly as God intended. FLEXIBILITY

tand where you are right now and reach for your toes, keeping your legs straight. If you get there, congratulations, you are one of the very few people that can. If you’re currently touching your knees (or thighs), you’re like the overwhelming majority of people-inflexible and primed for injury.
Of course, this is a very simple way to address the issue of flexibility. But what exactly is it? Flexibility simply refers to the range of motion in a joint or group of joints, or the ability to move a joint through a full range of motion. For some people, flexibility comes easily. For others, a lot of work is required. Flexibility is an important aspect of fitness due to the following reasons: • It increases your range of motion. Limited range of motion can lead to pain, injury, and poor overall performance.
40
• You’ll be hurt less. Remember
that old children’s song “the knee bone’s connected to the foot bone…”? Well, it’s a good, albeit simple, way to describe how your body works. Everything is connected, and everything works together to perform daily activities. As a result, when one part of your body is injured, other parts will try to take over the job. This can lead to imbalances and, ultimately, injuries. For example: if your ankle joints have a poor range of motion, you will start to walk incorrectly because all of your muscles are trying to compensate. Eventually, your hips will get sore, your back will get sore, and you’ll be miserable and immobile.
• Your strength will improve. Flexibility leads to optimal motor control and the ability to effectively recruit muscle fibres. Simply put, wellstretched muscles contract more efficiently. So how do I improve my flexibility? In order to improve your flexibility, you will need to stretch as often as possible. Flexibility takes a substantial amount of time to obtain and quite easily regresses when not practised. There are many different approaches to stretching, the most popular of which is static stretching (in which the stretch is held in its end position). The reason for this is that it is considered both safe and effective. In order to get an effective stretch, follow the following guidelines set out by the American College of Sports Medicine: • Aim to stretch at least twice per week, more if you are feeling particularly tight
• Stretch when your muscles are warm: after a workout or a bath • Stretches should be held to the point of producing a slight pull, but not to the point of producing pain • Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds • Perform each stretch 3-5 times • Breathe normally and relax • Keep still-don’t bounce When one stretches, one should focus on all major muscle groups, as well as areas that are prone to tightness. Some areas prone to tightness are the quadriceps (front of thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs), hip flexors (front of the hips) and calves. While it isn’t necessary for the average person to be able to bend themselves into a pretzel, flexibility can have real benefits when it comes to your overall functionality and fitness. Try to stretch after every workout and you’re sure to feel the benefits!

Grade 8 Seed Bank Ceremony
By Antonia Mugisa (Grade 12)
What an eventful day! The Margaret Roberts’ Heritage Seed Bank Program was kicked off officially in assembly on 17 April. Sandy Roberts, daughter of Margaret Roberts and proud old girl of PHSG, spoke about the importance of growing and sustaining our natural seeds. The 2018 Grade 8 learners were the first generation of ladies to each receive their seeds that were placed in a seed bank which will remain sealed until they are in matric. Each one of them wrote a letter to themselves of their hopes and dreams and placed it, alongside their seeds, in the seed banks, symbolising the growth and height each one their dreams can reach. We look forward to 2022 when they will receive their seeds and letters. PHSG looks to continue this for each new group of Grade 8 learners that attend the school. We would like to thank the Margaret Robert’s Herbal Centre for their effort and assistance in what we hope will be a lasting tradition!
Praise and Worship: SCA Camp
By Ms Karabo Rankapole
About 40 young ladies of PHSG joined the SCA teachers for pizza, cupcakes and a night of music, fun, laughter and sisterhood on Friday, 13 April. After much jubilation and dancing in the Gym, the group retired to the ‘Afrikaans Block’ to sleep on the floor there. The camp continued the next day after muffins and juice and speakers enlivened the campers with inspiring messages related to the world and their place in it. We were motivated to serve the Lord and each other with humility, love, kindness and gratitude. Our next Worship Evening is on Thursday and all are welcome to join our group.
School For Girls Student InterCultural Club (SICC)
PHSG is home to much diversity and once a year the SICC get together to celebrate different cultures’ diversity with a concert. This year’s performance took place on Friday 20 April. Ticket holders were treated to an evening full of dancing, singing, poetry and other fun performances by learners who were eager to show off their talents and various cultures.
Survival EEC
By Buhlebenkosi Mgwenya (Grade 11)
The Grade 11 learners attended EEC from 11 to 13 April at Grootvlei.
EEC was an emotional rollercoaster so draining and elevating; it turned hunger into an emotion. Although Day One felt like an episode of “Survival South Africa” with activities such as creating a shelter; making your own dinner and then sleeping outside, Day Two left us excited and wanting more. Some of us went to EEC not expecting the harshness of the veld but we all returned with a couple of inexplicable bite marks, more understanding of each other as members of the grade and as surprising individuals and more knowledge about when and where to be wary of snakes and spiders!

- Never plant them in a bed where they have previously grown - Prepare the soil with ample compost, general fertiliser like 2:3:2, and a light dusting of lime - Space the seedlings about 35cm apart - Do not handle them by touching their stems, rather handle them by the leaves. Keep well-watered, but don’t overdo it.
Rose care for May - Keep on spraying against fungal infections like black spot, mildews and rust which are much more active in cooler weather. - Aphids can still be problematic and more difficult to destroy in summer, seemingly due to higher sugar levels in the plant cells, which attracts them. Use systemic insecticides as sprays or soil drench.
Pruning to do - Prune plectranthus species and varieties as soon as they have stopped their autumn-flowering. - It is best to wait for the first frost to arrive and then cut off the dead frosted top growth of dahlias. - Chop chrysanthemums down to encourage bushy growth. - Cut back Japanese anemones, Michaelmas daisies and daisy bushes.
Pest watch Conifer aphids which cannot be seen by the naked eye, become active from May to September. Damage done like yellowing foliage, shoot dieback and the eventual demise of the whole plant can only be seen after the end of winter. Preventative treatment is therefore recommended from May to September, by applying systemic granular or liquid insecticide every two weeks. Drench the soil if a liquid formulation is used, or spread granular insecticide over the rooting zone into the soil, and water in well afterwards. - Water newly planted bulbs deeply every four days - they should never dry out completely. Those in pots will need more regular watering. You can still plant all springflowering bulbs like daffodils, ranunculus, and more.
peppery edibles by alternating rows of tatsoi, rocket, radish and pak choi. - Cut down the last tomatoes, bring the unripe fruit indoors and place with a banana to ripen fully. - Start covering plants against frost at night. - Plant more seedlings of Snapdragons, Bellis perennis, lobelias, primulas, phlox, Iceland poppies and petunias. - Mow lawns with the blades set high and water when dry. You can still do a last over-seeding with some seed types. Visit your local GCA to see which one will be the best for you.

T.E. Lawrence 16 August 1888 – 19 May 1935 ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ Born on August 16, 1888, in Tremadoc, Caernarvonshire, Wales, Thomas Edward Lawrence became an expert in Arab affairs as a junior archaeologist in Carchemish on the Euphrates River from 1911 to 1914, working for the British Museum on archaeological excavations. After the start of World War I, he entered British intelligence. Lawrence joined Amir Faisal al Husayn’s revolt against the Turks as a political liaison officer, leading a guerrilla campaign that harassed the Turks behind their lines. After a major victory at Aqaba—a port city on the southern coast of what is now Jordan—Lawrence’s forces supported British General Allenby’s campaign to capture Jerusalem. In 1917, T.E. Lawrence was captured at Dar’a and tortured and sexually abused, leaving emotional scars that never healed. By 1918, Lawrence had been promoted to lieutenant colonel and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Order of Bath by King George V, but politely refused the medals in support of Arab independence. Spiritually and physically exhausted, and uncomfortable with his fame, Lawrence returned to England and began diligently working on an account of his adventures. His book, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, was published shortly thereafter, becoming known for its vivid descriptions of the incredible breadth and variety of Lawrence’s activities in Arabia. The work garnered international fame for Lawrence, who was aptly dubbed “Lawrence of Arabia.” After the war, Lawrence joined the Royal Air Force under an assumed name, T.E. Shaw (in his quest for anonymity, he had his name officially changed). Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident on May 19, 1935, in Clouds Hill, Dorset, England.

Life is a Garden
Creative crafts for Mother’s Day Mom, the modern day superhero, always running around after us and making sure we have everything we need. With Mother’s Day coming up, there’s no better time to show our moms how much they mean to us. A hand-crafted gift from the heart is the best way to surprise mom this Mother’s Day. It’s time for the dads to take the stage and help their little ones make the perfect present for mom - an ice cream sticks flower pot. There’s no doubt about it - moms will love these colourful flower pots. They are easy to make, with a little bit of assistance, your child can accomplish this without a problem.
You will need - Tin cans (with holes made in the bottom for drainage) - Ice cream sticks (you can purchase these at your local craft or Chinese shop) - Different watercolour paints - Paintbrush - Some plants - A few stones to assist with drainage - Potting mix - Rubber band - Glue - Ribbon
Getting started 1. Step one is for dads. Prepare the tin cans by making holes in the bottom. This can be done carefully with a sharpened screwdriver. You can get the tin cans ready the day before. 2. Now it is your kiddies turn. Your child can start by filling the cans. First place some stones at the bottom, follow this with some soil and finally the plant. 3. The next step calls for creativity. Allow your little one to paint the ice cream sticks with the watercolour paints. You will need to wait for them to dry before moving on to the next stage. 4. It’s time to finish off the project. Place the rubber bands around your tin cans. This will help hold the glued ice cream sticks in place. Glue can be tricky, be sure to assist your child with applying the glue to the painted ice cream sticks and sticking them around the tin can. Complete the look by tying a ribbon around the pot. 5. Your flower pot is complete! All that’s left is to surprise mom on Mother’s Day with your beautiful creation.

The House Swap Rebecca Fleet
Frieda Klein 08: Day of the Dead Nicci French
On a north London high street, a runaway vehicle crashes to a halt. The man in the driving seat was murdered a week earlier. On Hampstead Heath, a bonfire blazes; in the flames lies the next victim. As autumn leaves fall, a serial killer runs a mock in the capital, playing games with the police. The death toll is rising fast, and the investigation is floundering. But this is no ordinary killer and every new victim is intended as a message to just one woman. Because psychologist Frieda Klein is in hiding. And someone is coming to find her…
‘No one lives this way unless they want to hide something.’ When Caroline and Francis receive an offer to house swap, they jump at the chance for a week away from home. After the difficulties of the past few years, they’ve worked hard to rebuild their marriage for their son’s sake; now they want to reconnect as a couple. On arrival, they find a house that is stark and sinister in its emptiness –it’s hard to imagine what kind of person lives here. Then, gradually, Caroline begins to uncover some signs of life –signs of her life. The flowers in the bathroom or the music in the CD player might seem innocent to her husband but to her they are anything but. It seems the person they have swapped with is someone she used to know; someone she’s desperate to leave in her past. But that person is now in her home –and they want to make sure she’ll never forget…

Paper Ghosts Julia Heaberlin
Carl Louis Feldman is an old man who was once a celebrated photographer. That was before he was tried for the murder of a young woman and acquitted. Before his admission to a care home for dementia. Now his daughter has come to see him, to take him on a trip. Only she’s not his daughter and, if she has her way, he’s not coming back… Because Carl’s past has finally caught up with him. The young woman driving the car is convinced her passenger is guilty, and that he’s killed other young women. Including her sister Rachel. Now they’re following the trail of his photographs, his clues, his alleged crimes. To see if he remembers any of it. Confesses to any of it. To discover what really happened to Rachel. Has Carl truly forgotten what he did or is he just pretending? Perhaps he’s guilty of nothing and she’s the liar. Either way in driving him into the Texan wilderness she’s taking a terrible risk. For if Carl really is a serial killer, she’s alone in the most dangerous place of all.
