ommunity Ch@ magazine has been coming to your inbox for the last seventeen months. I am amazed that we are already in November. This year has truly slipped away at the speed of light. Our November issue this year is highlighting two serious causes which are both close to my heart. The first Saturday in November is National Children’s Day and November the 20th marks Universal Children’s Day. The aim of these days are to raise awareness about child abuse and to highlight children’s rights. Every child is born an innocent and deserves the very best we have to offer. “Every child is a different kind of flower and all together make the world a beautiful garden.” It is also Movember; a monthly often seen as the silly moustache growing month, but there is a lot more to Movember. Across the World, men die an average of six years younger than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable. Ladies, let Movember, and all the moustaches around town, remind you to take care of your man! Men don’t open up the way women do – so keep an eye on your super hero and make sure he lives a healthier, happier and longer life. Our rainy cover this month was inspired by the week of rain Pretoria had in October, which turned our garden beautifully green. I hope we will see more good rainfall during November. As always remember to share your thoughts with us, we love hearing from you. You can email us any time at-featzmags@gmail.com If you enjoyed the November issue, remember to share it with your friends and family – you can even post it to your Facebook page – we don’t mind. Keep an eye out for our December Christmas issue. Until then, happy reading!

November Facts... In the Georgian calendar, the calendar that most of the world uses, November is the eleventh month of the year. However, in the early Roman calendar, it was originally the ninth month. Later, the Roman senate elected to name the eleventh month for Caesar. In Anglo-Saxon times, November was known as Blotmonaþ (blood month or sacrifice month). November is the only month used to represent a letter in the phonetic alphabet. Although the word November dates back to Old English, the first known use of Novemberish, was by Robert Burns in 1793. According to research published in 2008, serial killers are more likely to be born in November than any other month. In the US state of Indiana, November is the most likely month for a car to collide with a deer. In Finland, November is called “marraskuu” or “month of the dead”. It is the time of souls in Hell. The birthstone for November is the topaz. The zodiac signs for November are Scorpio (October 23 - November 21) and Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) The birth flower for November is the chrysanthemum. It is Peanut Butter Lovers Month and Aviation History Month

ARE WE MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES FOR THE CHILDREN? The strong five-year old boy gets up and talks to the people – the confidence of the young man is astounding and far removed from the crying, insecure child that was brought to Child Welfare Tshwane in 2016. *Malcolm’s mother was feeling hopeless and brought her son to us because her living conditions was not good for the child. She felt that she could not provide the care that her child needed to reach his full potential. Malcolm’s life would have had a different outcome if his mother did not take responsibility for his future – she knew that it was not within her capacity to care for him and to ensure that this bright young man has access to the best opportunities for his development. She could have kept him with her and struggled to keep them both warm and fed – but she chose to rather give him a better life.

4

potential. She would not have been able to feed him properly and he might have ended up abandoned on the street somewhere…. For many children, however, their story does not have a good ending. Poverty, unemployment, unplanned pregnancies, substance abuse and other factors all have an impact on the welfare of children in South Africa and in Tshwane specifically. Children are abandoned at birth or placed with alternative caretakers (family or friends of the biological mother) who neglect or abuse the child. Horror stories are told by children of aunties and grandparents that have physically abused them before they were placed in alternative care. Some have the physical scars as evidence of a childhood of struggle and hardship. For many, however, the emotional scars are invisible but has left them with serious problems they will face each day of their lives despite hours and hours in counselling and therapy sessions.

Although many may question her decision to give her child up for adoption, she gave her child The impact of neglect in the early childhood the best opportunity to reach his phase will impact on the child for many years Community Ch@ Magazine

to come. The biological family structure which is supposed to be the safety net for the child where he or she can develop and grow and just be a child often becomes the hornets’ nest where the child suffers irreparable damage to his or her person. The files of children in care of the Child & Youth Care Centre read like horror stories and it is difficult to understand how children can be subjected to this kind of treatment. Therefore it is important for an Organisation like Child Welfare Tshwane to be active in the community to ensure a haven for children who are victims of the social needs of our community. Cases of suspected child abuse or neglect should be reported to us so we can investigate and intervene. It is the vision of the Organisation to ensure safe children, safe families and a safe community. This means caring for and protecting all vulnerable children by trying to improve their living conditions. In some instances, the intervention required is simple: we offer early childhood development at our centres in Elandspoort, Mamelodi, Sunnyside and Atteridgeville where the children from poorer families are taught motor skills and entry level educational programmes in line with the curriculum prescribed by the Department of Basic Education. In other instances, severe help is required to ensure the safety of the child. Then we need to send out a team to investigate the potential risk to the child first before deciding on corrective measures. Intensive evaluation by a social worker in a play therapy environment can determine the impact that the conditions had on the child already and then the care plan can be developed.

& Youth Care Centre or – if more permanent intervention is required – adoption will be an option. Since 1918 this Organisation has been committed to help children be recognised as important members of our society and members who need our protection – save the children to save our future! We provide free social work services to the community and as a non-profit, child protection organisation, have helped bring change to the lives of thousands of children. Maintaining the family unit is the ultimate and we always strive to resolve matters in the home in the best interest of the child through mediation and counselling aimed at keeping the family unit intact. Mediation is the process we apply when the parents have separated and we need to work out a plan for visitation, schooling and religious upbringing of the child. Ultimately, we aim to promote co-parenting if re-unification is not an option. The best interest of the child should always be the primary focus in the process. But in some cases, where parents are simply unfit or unable to provide proper care for their children, we need to step in and give the child a voice. If the biological parents cannot be part of the child’s life, we search for suitable alternative care and after carefully screening the prospective family will place the child with a suitable matching family. Often these new families develop strong and close ties and children thrive in this new environment. We need to always consider what is the best for the child? Children are our future and we are all playing a part in the upbringing of all children – be aware of the options and consider the best option for the child. Sometimes a difficult decision – like making a phone call to report neglect or abuse – may be the best investment you make in the future! Save the children to save our future!

Caring includes working with the parents, to equip them to be more effective. It also includes seeking alternative care like Foster Care and residential care in the Bramley Child

his Mexican member of the canine world is the smallest dog going, but either he doesn’t know that, or he just doesn’t care. The Chihuahua is always ready to take on anybody or anything, any time! While Hollywood turned these little dogs into fashion accessories, South Africans fell in love with them and gave them the kind of home a dog deserves. I am very happy to say that the sight of a dog in a pink tutu being carried around in a bag all day is still a rare occurrence in Pretoria. Thank you to all the dog lovers out there who understands that a dog was never meant to sport a tutu!

at anywhere from one to four months. A Chihuahua’s eyes are typically very large and round, with a quizzical, alert look to them. It isn’t easy to type cast a Chihuahua; they are all different. Some are very lively and some are pretty quiet and placid. Some are shy and timid and will hide under your feet when strangers appear; others are bold and feisty and ready to bark at anyone who comes to the door. Some are affectionate and eager to please, and others are stubborn and want to do their own thing. The important thing to understand is that this is a dog where the genes rule. The dog you get is the dog you will have, and you will not be able to do much to change its attitude, no matter how much obedience training you give it. They do not handle time alone very well.

need to romp or explore; they are simply glad to be with you. Chihuahuas are charming, can be really affectionate and have huge personalities. They usually don’t like strangers and they will bark. They are also not the greatest with other dogs and pets, although there is an exception to that rule – they do very well with other Chihuahuas. For that reason, many people end up getting a second pup. They are not perfect pets to have around small children – simply because the child can so easy hurt this little dog accidentally. Most breeders will not let a Chihuahua go to a home where there are children under the age of eight.

10

A truth about Chihuahuas is this: There are a lot of medical things that can go wrong with a Chihuahua – but almost none of them do! For all their small size and apparent fragility, most Chihuahuas stay perfectly healthy over their long lives. Ladies, when you decide to adopt one of these little cuties by all means take them out with you – carry them in a handbag if you must, but please keep in mind that they are dogs – with doggy needs – and not a fashion accessory.

The theme of World Diabetes Day (WDD) 2017 - 14 November - is Women and Diabetes, with the slogan “Our right to a healthy future”. Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the campaign will promote the importance of affordable and equitable access for all women at risk for or living with diabetes to the essential diabetes medicines and technologies, self-management education and information they require to achieve optimal diabetes outcomes and strengthen their capacity to prevent type 2 diabetes. There are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes and this total is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040. Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths each year. As a result of socioeconomic conditions, girls and women with diabetes experience barriers in accessing cost-effective diabetes prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care, particularly in

developing countries. Two out of every five women with diabetes are of reproductive age, accounting for over 60 million women worldwide. Women with diabetes have more difficulty conceiving and may have poor pregnancy outcomes. Approximately one in seven births is affected by gestational diabetes (GDM), a severe and neglected threat to maternal and child health. A significant number of women with GDM also go on to develop type 2 diabetes resulting in further healthcare complications and costs. Women and girls must be empowered with equitable access to knowledge and resources that will strengthen their capacity to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes, and influence the adoption of healthy lifestyles to improve the health and well-being of those around them and future generations.

or 30 days in the month formerly known as November, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world will be rallying to raise funds and awareness for the often ignored issues surrounding men’s health. “Men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. We have to make a stand and stop men dying too young, before their time,” says Garron Gsell, chief executive and founder of the Men’s Foundation, which manages the Movember campaign in South Africa under license from the Movember Foundation. Movember is the leading global men’s health charity, funding over 1,200 projects in 21 countries worldwide – focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50 years, while three quarters of suicides are men. Poor mental health leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. That’s one every minute. According the World Health Organisation close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year. For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide every year. Suicide in the second leading cause of death amongst 15 – 29 year-olds. In South Africa, prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men, while male suicide accounts for approximately 18 deaths a day. Currently, men in South Africa have a life expectancy that is seven years’ shorter than that of women. The Men’s

Foundation aims to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25% by 2030. “We have a long way to go until no man dies of these diseases. Our sons, partners, fathers, brothers and friends are facing these challenges and we need your help,” says Gsell. This year’s campaign encourages everyone to be the difference in a man’s life, whether it’s your own health or that of your father, partner, brother or mate, by encouraging men to start the conversations, get tested and become more physically active. Visit www.za.movember.com to choose how you you’d like to make a difference. Mo Bro’s are encouraged to start 1 Movember clean shaven. “The current reality is that government funding primarily focuses on women, children and the elderly, and there are very good reasons for this,” Gsell says. “What that means is that if we want to help men, then we have to rely on the private and public sectors to donate and invest in programmes that will make a difference.” In South Africa, the Men’s Foundation is developing their own programmes as well as collaborating with their beneficiary partners and the Prostate Cancer Foundation to identify, develop and fund men’s survivorship and research programmes that meet the global objectives of the Movember Foundation.

his species is a small bird, about the size of a house sparrow. It measures about 12 or 13 cm and weighs hardly 13 grams. Male and female look alike. They have rounded wings, strong legs, and a conspicuous ring of white feathers round the eyes. The upperparts plumage is green, and the throat and vent are bright yellow. The Orange River White-eye has a pale yellow central belly with peach coloured flanks, whereas the Cape subspecies has a grey breast and belly. However, the subspecies from Mpumalanga has a green-washed breast and belly.

There are seven subspecies of Cape White-eyes. The dominate western subspecies is sometimes split as the Orange River White-eye, Zosterops pallidus, leaving the eastern races as Cape White-eye, Z. capensis . The Orange River White-eye prefers drier, more open woodland than the eastern forms, and the ranges of the two populations do not overlap. They are both endemic to South Africa.

18

The Cape White-eye is very common throughout South Africa. This species is endemic to South Africa, though, which means it only exists in that country. The Cape White-eye also depends upon a particular habitat for survival. Destroy that habitat and the bird will possibly be lost forever. The preferred habitats for the Cape White-eye are forests, woodlands, savanna, grasslands and riverine areas. Yet, this species is also at home in

wetlands and bushveld or scrub areas, and even in gardens. This is a sociable species forming large flocks outside the breeding season, when it is generally seen in pairs. It is seldom seen as a single individual. It is partially migratory, with some seasonal movements. The Cape White-eye feeds mainly on insects, but also spiders and their eggs, soft fleshy flowers, nectar, fruit, pollen, and small grains. It readily comes to bird feeders. This bird mostly feeds on the ground or in the foliage, and not so much on the wing. The Cape White-eye is monogamous

and only seeks a new partner if the first one dies. The peak breeding season is September to December. The Cape White-eye builds a cup nest in the branches of a tree or shrub. There are usually 2 or 3 eggs in a clutch. They are pale blue and unspotted and hatch in 11-12 days. The chicks fledge after 12 to 13 days. The Cape White-eye’s contact call is a sweet “twee tuuu twee twee” , higher pitched and more trilled in the Orange River White-eye subspecie. The territorial call is surprisingly loud for a small bird.

Did you know: The Cape White-eye is also called: Pale White-eye, Green Whiteeye, Vaal River White-eye, Natal Zosterops, Kaapse Glasogie November 2017

New Covenantal Love

T

his month we examine love from a New Covenantal perspective and it is as surprising as anything we have discovered so far! According to Paul love is the greatest of all the gifts and so it is. But how does it manifest itself in the New Covenant? Under the Old Covenant there was a law that forced people to love God! Can you believe it? Jesus even quoted it: Matt 22:37 Jesus said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. (NET) Fortunately we are under a New Covenant which did away with the Law of Moses and therefore also with this law. We are no longer under a command to love God. Does this mean that we will love Him less? No, it will be easier to love Him now that there is no law forcing us to do it because a law usually has the opposite effect of what is intended. We are now free to love Him or not. We are under no obligation to do it; the gospel is good news

24

and the good news is also that we are free to choose. So how does love work under the New Covenant of grace? We love Him when we realise how much He loves us. There is no single instance where Paul tells us to love the Lord. When he touches on this topic it almost always has to do with His love for us (or our love for each other). What has Jesus done for us that we should love Him? Well He made us right with Himself by coming to earth and dying on the cross for our sins. When He died on the cross He also nailed the Law to His cross (Col 2:14-15). He made us heirs of God (Gal 4:7). He took away all condemnation (Rom 8:1). He gives us all things (Rom 8:32). His body was broken so that ours can be healed. (1Pet 2:24) He became poor so that we can become rich. (2Cor 8:9) He took away the Law and replaced it with grace (Rom 6:14). He gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us and to indwell us (John 16:13-15). He never thinks about our sins again (Heb 8:12). We receive His grace and righteousness as a free gift

Community Ch@ Magazine

(Rom 5:17). He is now responsible for our sanctification (2Cor 3:18). He cancelled the flawed Old Covenant and replaced it with a new, much better one (Heb 8:7-13). We now live by His life (Gal 2:20). He is our life (Col 3:4). This and much more has He done for us. How can you not love Him? He is goodness through and through and He thinks good thoughts about us. (Jer 29:11 “For I know what I have planned for you,” says the LORD. “I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope”. (NET)) But it is when we realise how much He loves us that we really start loving Him: Jer 31:3 The Lord appeared from of old to me [Israel], saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you. (AMP) Rom 8:38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor heavenly rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NET) Eph 3:18 (so that) you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. (NET)

in you, but to realise just how much He loves you and as we have seen from the texts above, He loves us incredibly much. Let that sink into your heart and mind and see what happens. Pray every day that He will let you see His love for you. That is transforming, it drives out all fear and gives a peace that surpasses all understanding. He loves us. He really loves us. There is a hymn that goes something like this: God is good and that is who He is; God loves me and that is who I am. That’s right; His love defines us, it touches our very identity. I am not the one who loves God so much but the one who is loved by God with an everlasting love. His love is my glory, it’s my security, it’s my peace, it’s my comfort and it’s who I am. I’m the loved one. He made me to love! Look at the next verse and then I’m done for this month: 1John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins. (Webster) This says it all; true love is His love for us. This is the gospel. It is always good news. Every aspect of the gospel that we have so far looked at was good news and that is because our covenant is so good; and our covenant is so good because our Daddy is so good.

But there are two more scriptures that I want to share on this topic: John 17:22 The glory you gave to me I have given to them, that they may be one just as we are one. (NET) Jesus says here that we received the same glory that He received from the Father. But what is that glory? In the next verse He explains it: John 17:24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they can see my glory that you gave me because you loved me before the creation of the world. (NET) Our glory is God’s love for us! The New Covenantal principle is therefore not to try and love God with everything November 2017

Marriage and The Little Voice By: Stepen van Basten

(how you sabotage your own relationships)

I was recently exposed to an amazing new teaching. It relates to the brain and that little voice in our minds. It would seem that the major task of the brain is to keep us safe. To protect us. Interestingly enough, I learnt this at a financial seminar (T Harv Eker’s Millionaire Mind Intensive) and also at a presentation seminar (T Harv Eker’s Train the Trainer). We are largely empty when we are born. You can teach a child any language on earth. We are essentially programmed by our parents, our siblings, our culture, our society, our friends. The politics and religion of our parents usually become ours. We learn about money from our parents and they were probably our first examples of marriage too. The brain is like an air-conditioners thermostat. If you program an air-conditioner for 22 degrees, it will warm up when the room hits 20 degrees and cools down when it hits 24. We are the same. According to Harv, we have a financial blueprint which keeps us limited. He and others in this field assert that you will never earn more than your self-image (what you believe you are worth). It is the brain and THE LITTLE VOICE that holds us back. The same is true for marriage. Man, there are so many negative beliefs surrounding marriage. When I told one of my acquaintances that I was getting married he suggested I take an aspirin and I would feel better in the morning. There are so many paradigms associated with marriage: • Another one bites the dust • Another good man gone • 50% of marriages fail • Men are all bastards, they all cheat on their wives

These are all examples of the little voice. Warning you against marriage. Trying to keep you safe from heartache. Your little voice will re-enforce your paradigms during marriage too: • She is bossy • He loves work more than me • She is a nag • He would rather play golf than spend time with me. You see. He does not love me. • She always ……………… • He always ………………. • She just spends money without thinking • He is such a miser • She hates my friends • He hates my mother Your little voice needs to be managed. Ask yourself right now what your beliefs are around marriage. Don’t allow yourself to find the politically correct beliefs, or the say the ‘correct’ thing or the ‘right’ answer. Your beliefs create your future. The beauty is that if you know what they are you can change them. Winners react and make decisions based on their vision and mission, losers listen to their little voices and do nothing. Marriage is a choice. Don’t allow your little voice to ruin yours. This is an excerpt from the book, “So you’re married, now what?

• She is lovely now but she will turn into a bitch in 5 years’ time

Written by the marriage expert, Stephen van Basten

• Women are controlling and husbands are hen-pecked

www.stephenvanbasten. co.za/author.html

• Love is blind • Rod Stewart is claimed to have said, “Whenever I feel the urge to get married, I find a strange woman and give her my house. That’s the eventual outcome of marriage”.

SAAF Spitfire 5518

T

his Spifire MkIX otherwise known as 5518, was built the Castle Bromwich production line in May 1945 and was originally designated TE213. She was the 5556th MkIX built and was fitted with a Merlin 70 powerplant. TE 213 was put in storage and was eventually sold to the South African Airforce in July 1947, and was eventually flown to the Union via Egypt in mid August where she was given the serial number 5518 at 15 Air Depot. Now sporting the number 5518, she was transferred to 1 Air Depot in November and then finally allocated to 1 Squadron at Air Force Base Waterkloof in Pretoria on the 4th of December 1948. In June 1949 5518 was involved in a collision with another Spitfire and sustained a fair amount of damage. She was repaired but in 1951 she was involved in another incident and was again

damaged. She was then moved to AFB Swartkop and placed into storage. The SAAF retired the Spitfire MkIX in 1954 and it was decided to erect a Spitfire Gate Guard at AFB Waterkloof. Spitfire 5518 was chosen, her Merlin engine was removed and she was placed on a pole outside the administration block for the next 23 years. In November 1978, 5518 was taken down and moved to the SAAF Museums storage hanger at Lanseria Airport, where it was decided to rebuild 5518 to an airworthy condition. The restoration process was slow and Atlas/ Denel did most of the work. At last in September 1995 5518 was given her colours and in early October she completed her first test flight after the restoration. She was plagued by engine

problems and was grounded until April of the following year. 5518 made its first public appearance on the 20th of April 1996 at the SAAF Museum and joined the Airshow circuit for the next four years although the engine problems still persisted. In 1998 a complete engine overhaul was conducted. On the 15th April 2000 at a SAAF Museum Flying Day, 5518 suffered an engine failure after a low level fly-past with another Spitfire and had to make a forced landing. Unfortunately she landed short of the runway and went through a security wall pretty much destroying the Aircraft. Fortunately pilot Neil Thomas walked away with a few minor cuts and bruises. The remains of 5518 were put back into storage where she would remain for the next 15 years. In 2015 it was decided that the SAAF Museum in conjunction with the Friends Of The South African Air Force Museum and with the help of many dedicated partners and sponsors to restore 5518 to static condition, with the possibility of making her airworthy once again. There is a very dedicated Steering committee driving this project including Lt. Gen. Denis Earp (former chief of the SAAF) and Colonel Tony Smit (former OC of the SAAF Museum) and many others. Lets hope that we will once again have the privilege of witnessing Spitfire 5518 gracing our Skies. Information from http://www.spitfire-restoration.co.za

Life Span: 13 to 16 years Size: 2.7 to 5kg

his is a smart cat who loves to play and will thrive with a family who is willing to teach him tricks, play with him and provide plenty of interactive toys.

Cat breeders are an experimental lot, creating distinctive new breeds either by building on natural genetic mutations or by cross breeds to achieve a new look, colour or pattern. The Bombay, named for the exotic port city in India, has no connection with the subcontinent but was created from crosses between sable Burmese and black American Shorthairs to resemble a black panther in miniature. Nikki Horner of Louisville, Kentucky, is credited with developing the Bombay, starting in the late 1950s. Her goal was a sleek, shiny black cat with a muscular body and friendly temperament. British breeders achieved the same look and personality with crosses of Burmese and black domestic shorthairs. The lively and affectionate Bombay loves people and is adaptable to many different environments and lifestyles. His calm nature makes him a good apartment dweller, and he is amenable to life with other pets, although he definitely wants to be the top cat. Expect to find your Bombay hogging the warmest spot in the house. That includes under the covers at bedtime. Most will converse with their people in a distinctive but not loud voice. Bombays are often good at playing fetch, and some have learned to walk on a leash. This is a smart cat who loves to play and will thrive with a family who is willing to teach him tricks, play with him and provide plenty of interactive toys. Except for his dramatic black coat, the Bombay looks much like the Burmese, but with a few physical differences such as a larger, longer body and longer legs. He has a rounded head with medium sized ears set wide apart, eye that range in colour from gold to copper, and a straight, medium-length tail. The short, fine coat feels satiny to the touch and shines like patent leather. The Bombay is a medium sized cat; when lifted, he feels heftier than he looks. The breed develops slowly and males may not reach full size and musculature until they are two years old. This beautiful cat is guaranteed to entertain and delight you.

Last-Minute Exam Tips

For most people, success is the result of working steadily toward a goal. With exam season fast approaching, you may be searching for ways to milk your year of hard work for every possible bit of benefit. Here are seven last-minute tips that can help you finish your prep strong and perform at your peak: 1. Sleep This piece of advice is listed first because it is one of the most important and most frequently overlooked strategies. Our brains are at their best when they are rested. If you sit for an exam while exhausted, you will have a much harder time recalling the information you need to earn a high score. Tests are designed to assess knowledge and skills that you accumulate over months of study, so

34

frantically reviewing your notes the week before the exam will not help you. You can study an hour or so a day to keep yourself focused and on-topic, but avoid working late into the evening.

2. Rest your hands Tests are not yet computer-delivered, and this means that you will be doing quite a bit of writing by hand. It may seem strange to think about, but tired hands are one factor that can affect your performance.

However, there are ways to minimize the likelihood of aching fingers. On the day of your exam, bring a stress ball or other stress relief toy that will help your hands relax from their pencil-clutch posture. You can even bring a small tube of moisturizer to rub into your fingers. (Note that these items may only be used during breaks between tests – not in the exam room.)

3. Use your downtime wisely Part of entering exam week rested and relaxed is feeling mentally refreshed. If your high school has large numbers of students, your teachers may have already taken test schedules into account when assigning homework/project due dates. If this is not the case at your school, ensure you create a work schedule well in advance of your exams, and aim to finish any other academic tasks before your first test. This can minimize possible stress and distraction.

5. Practice your editing As you study for your exams, include a bit of practice with editing essays. This advice is particularly useful on tests that heavily value writing, such as History and English Language and Composition. Before you take your first exam, locate several essays that you have written for class and edit them for clarity. On test day, you will not have time for extensive rewrites of your free response answers, so it is well worth knowing where to focus your energies. Include this practice in your daily study hour. While you cannot add much information to your store of knowledge at this point, you can improve your test-taking process.

6. Rest between back-to-back exams

Many students who take tests report feeling worn out after just one – let alone back-to-back exams! Unfortunately, because the schedule is set by the school, Make time, too, for an activity that is fun you may face this very situation. If you and relaxing. Go for a walk, play a favourite must complete back-to-back tests, plan video game, or invite your friends over. ahead to ensure that you will have some The specifics of what you do matter less quality rest time between exams. For than ensuring that you do not spend example, bring music to listen to, and eat the week before your exams tense and a healthy meal (one including complex anxious. carbohydrates, protein, and vegetables to nourish your brain).

4. Review class content, but do so selectively

7. Schedule recovery time

As mentioned above, avoid entirely abandoning your test prep. Taking a highstakes exam “cold” is guaranteed to leave you stressed come test day. Instead of broadly reviewing, however, study several points that are essential to earning your intended score: a novel or play that you would like to cite in your English Literature and Composition essay, those tricky bits of math that tripped you up in Calculus review sessions, or essential dates and events History.

If you have multiple tests on multiple days, do your best to clear your schedule in the evenings. You will need to relax and sleep in order for your brain to recharge, and a busy night can interfere with this process. Do indulge in light exercise (you will be amazed at how effectively it can reset your mind) or a favourite activity. Continue to eat well, and – as has been mentioned many times – get your rest! You will be well on your way to success if you do.

On the 18th of October PHSG welcomed the gumboot dancers from Pretoria Boys High School, who had been assisting our learners in gumboot dancing for just over a term. A demonstration was given to the eager audience and in which both schools showed off their talents.

HISTORY OUTING TO CONSTITUTION HILL:

On the 24th October, 130 Grade 11 History students went on an historical outing to Constitution Hill. On arrival learners were divided into smaller groups and with very knowledgeable tour guides proceeded to visit different sections of Constitution Hill. During the tour learners were able to visit Section Four, and saw the isolation cells that some prisoners were sent to. They learnt about the strip searches and the diet of the various prisoners. Another interesting section was the women’s jail, where learners were able to get an idea of the size of the shacks that black women were accommodated in and also were also taken on a tour of the section that housed white women prisoners. The oldest section of the prison, the Old Fort, was built by Paul Kruger and learners were interested to find out that Nelson Mandela was housed in the hospital section in this part of the prison in order to keep him apart from other prisoners. The Constitutional Court is also housed on the grounds of Constitution Hill and learners were able to go into the court and were told about the symbolism of various objects located in the court. The tour lasted two and a half hours and most learners at the end complained that they didn’t have enough time there.

Surviving Your Exams Even after months of dedication and hard work, your success or failure can hinge on a single, heavily weighted assignment — the final exam. To further complicate matters, many schools compress all course finals into a single week. This may understandably seem like a recipe for stress and dread, but there are a number of ways to improve your performance during finals. Here are six to try this year: 1. Verify the details Each school arranges its finals differently. This means that your final for chemistry may be scheduled at your usual class time — or it may be scheduled on a different day and hour. Be absolutely sure that you know when (and where) your finals will be held. Scrambling to find this information on the day of an exam will only serve to increase your nervousness.

sessions. Pulling an all-nighter, however, is one of the worst things that you can do (short of accidentally sleeping through your final). Fatigued brains do not retain information, nor do they recall it well. There are effective ways to study in the last weeks before exams, but adhering to a reasonable sleep schedule is the key to their effectiveness.

3. Stay active

2. Get some sleep

40

Exercise boosts blood flow to the brain, and sitting in one place for an extended During finals numerous students period of time can lead to a tired, illcommiserate over the intensity supplied mind. You may not be able to of their last-minute cram squeeze in a full workout during finals, but Community Ch@ Magazine

you do have time to go for a short walk or to do two sets of crunches or push-ups. Try searching online for “exercises for office workers.” This search may lead you to activities that you can do to keep your blood flowing during this critical portion of the year.

4. Eat well Eating healthy food is always a great idea. During finals, you may be tempted to eat and drink whatever items are most convenient. However, the quick calories of processed carbohydrates will ultimately leave you exhausted. Instead, eat foods that are digested slowly: whole grains, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins. A little planning can go a long way as you head into finals. A loaf of whole grain bread and turkey slices can make a stack of sandwiches. Bags of baby carrots or microwaveable frozen peas can provide a quick, healthy snack, as can a handful of almonds or walnuts. Before a final, be sure to eat a meal that is high in protein. Most final exams are more than an hour in length, and a sugar rush simply will not see you through. Likewise, taking an important test while hungry can be a recipe for disaster.

5. Experiment with different methods of studying If you have more than one final, you might be planning to study for each individually, likely in chronological order. Interestingly, research has shown that human brains are not designed to focus narrowly for long stretches of time. So, plan to work on an individual subject for an hour or two, and then switch. You do not have to split your time equally. If you have a literature exam soon, review for it during more than one block of time (and never in back-to-back blocks). You will find that your retention

increases, and the repetition that comes from revisiting material more frequently will help your class content “set” in your memory. You can also take short breaks each hour to refresh your mind.

6. Silence your social media accounts The reverse of focusing too intensely is not being able to focus at all. While it is true that devoting too much time to studying can lead to fatigue, dividing your review sessions into too many parts can lead to scattered and ineffectual learning. Turning off your social media for an entire week may not be realistic or achievable for every student. Do, however, consider using it as a reward. Check in on your favourite platforms or websites for 10 to 15 minutes before going to bed or during your downtime. However, be aware of the “just for a moment” syndrome. As most people know all too well, checking news headlines can lead to an entire afternoon of watching hilarious cat videos and reading celebrity gossip. A strong finals performance may seem impossible, but it is anything but. Set your worries and nerves aside, and remember to stay on task, work hard, eat well, and make time to rest. Soon, finals will be over, and you can begin the holiday confident that your grades will reflect the work you did all year long.

BOOKS Don’t Let Go – Harlan Coben With unmatched suspense and emotional insight, Harlan Coben explores the big secrets and little lies that can destroy a relationship, a family, and even a town in this powerful new thriller. Suburban New Jersey Detective Napoleon “Nap” Dumas hasn’t been the same since senior year of high school, when his twin brother Leo and Leo’s girlfriend Diana were found dead on the railroad tracks—and Maura, the girl Nap considered the love of his life, broke up with him and disappeared without explanation. For fifteen years, Nap has been searching, both for Maura and for the real reason behind his brother’s death. And now, it looks as though he may finally find what he’s been looking for. When Maura’s fingerprints turn up in the rental car of a suspected murderer, Nap embarks on a quest for answers that only leads to more questions - about the woman he loved, about the childhood friends he thought he knew, about the abandoned military base near where he grew up, and mostly about Leo and Diana - whose deaths are darker and far more sinister than Nap ever dared imagine. THE ROMANOV RANSOM Clive Cussler Treasure-hunting team Sam and Remi Fargo’s search for a Romanov fortune brings them into perilous contact with an ambitious neo-Nazi clan in this New York Times bestselling adventure. In 1918, a ransom of enormous size was paid to free the Romanovs from the Bolsheviks, but, as history knows, the Romanovs died anyway. And the ransom? During World War II, the Nazis stole it from the Russians, and after that–it vanished. Until now. When a modern-day kidnapping captures the attention of husband-and-wife team Sam and Remi Fargo, the couple soon learn that these long-lost riches may be back in play, held in trust by the descendants of a Nazi guerrilla faction called the Werewolves. It is their mission to establish the Fourth Reich, and their time is coming soon. As the Fargos follow the trail across Europe, Northern Africa, and South America, they know only one thing. This quest is greater than anything they have ever done–it is their chance to make someone answer for unspeakable crimes, and to prevent them from happening again. If I Die Tonight A.L. Gaylin There was a time when Jackie Reed knew her sons better than anyone. She used to be able to tell what they were thinking, feeling, if they were lying...But it’s as though every day, every minute even, she knows them a little less. Her boys aren’t boys anymore, they’re becoming men - men she’s not sure she recognises, men she’s not sure she can trust. So when one of her son’s classmates is killed in suspicious circumstances, people start asking questions. Was it really a hit and run? A car-jacking gone wrong? Or something much more sinister? Now Jackie must separate the truth from the lies. How did that boy end up on the road? And where was her son that night? “Right now, AL Gaylin is at the very top of her game, crafting exhilarating and audacious crime novels that are both rich in character and rivetingly told. Her books are, quite simply, not to be missed.” (Megan Abbott). “This is mind-blowing suspense from an exceptional writer.’ Alex Marwood ‘You’ll stay up late to read this one. AL Gaylin is a storyteller guaranteed to keep you up all night.” (Laura Lippman). And last but not least: “AL Gaylin is a great storyteller.” (Mark Billingham). Praise for A. L. Gaylin: “Label me a big fan”. (Harlan Coben). “A clever, twisty mystery.” (Sunday Times, Culture). “This absorbing thriller will have you hooked”. (Hello!).
